anyone?!!!! please!!!==========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, you wouldn't want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it, would you?We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff.Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.Thank you for understanding.Orange Blossom ~ forum moderator

Alright, it started with the missing Ibm00001.exe error file message. I fixed that using the nifty search button. Then for some reason, my computer started to act reallly slow and began to refresh the desktop icons and menu bar, but no error message showed. Only in safe mode is it running at normal speed and not refreshing now.

I have followed the instructions of the "Slow computer sticky" CCleaner, Defrag, AVG, A2, PC tools, Norton anti-virus, Stinger.
Since this only applies to a normal bootup, I think its a malicious program that starts.

So lets refresh the symptoms(no pun intended): On a normal bootup, it becomes as slow as an old lady driving a car with add. No programs can be opened, no windows will appear. Screen icons and "Start taskbar" with the icons will constantly refresh between 5-30 seconds. No virus was detected using A2, AVG, Norton, PC Tools, STinger. Cleared all Caches etc with CCleaner and used SpeeDefrag.

Please Help?

You are or were infected with the Torpig.C TrojanThis trojan can be very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms. A friend of mine has a problem with his laptop, web pages keep refreshing constantly in both IE and firefox. It seems to be the internet itself thats actually refreshing because no online programs are working.

You are running an outdated version of Hijack This. You should get the most recent version.

What version of Windows is on the computer? A complete format and reinstall should have fixed any problems other than hardware related ones.

Only in the last I'd say two or three days (and I've had this computer for 2+ years), whenever I open a window (any window, e.g. My Computer, My Documents, sometimes even Firefox, etc) and then close it, Windows will momentarily re-paint or refresh my desktop icons even though the icons were already painted correctly. In other words, when I close the window, I'll see my icons go from "normal" to momentarily white, then back to normal.

I'm currently using Vista SP2. I've read about this problem in Windows XP and the solution is to resize the icon cache, but not much information exists in regard to this problem being in Vista. Nonetheless, I tried rebuilding the icon cache by deleting and re-creating IconCache.db, but it didn't work.

Any ideas on why this just started happening and how to fix it? Thanks!

A:Icons Constantly Refreshing (All of a Sudden)

I saw this solution or it maybe a simple video card problem. See if you can contact the manufacture and let them know about the issue and maybe they will replace it as a defect.

Hello,

I have a dell Latitude D600 running windows XP service pack 3. My computer has developed a strange sound problem. For some reason, it will only play the background sounds on videos, such as background music, special effect sounds, etc. while the voices are extremely low. It does this randomly, once in the middle of playing a video. The problem persists even when I use my headphones. I've noticed that this isn't a problem when listening to music or videos over the internet.

I have tried going into control panel-sounds and audio devices-volume control, but everything is turned all the way up. when I go into advanced the bass and treble settings on the tone control are greyed out and enable SPDIF is checked. I've tried restoring my computer, but that does nothing for the problem. It has done this before, and the only way to solve it was to reset the laptop to factory conditions, which I don't want to do again.

Thank you in advance for any help,
dragonfall

So here's what happened. The mic on my headset stopped working so I jerked around with the computer- and Realtek HD Audio Manager settings. No luck, after this I have experienced some problems with my audio. Voices are super quiet but everything else sounds normal. I currently use the backside of my computer for my headset but I need to fix this.

Thank you!

A:I can no longer hear voices, only background sounds

What is your make/model of motherboard?
Have you tried another headset (or speakers) to determine if its the computer and not the headset? Try hooking up the headset to another computer and see if it works the correct way.

What operating system are you running?

Have you recently downloaded/installed any new software?

Have you checked Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Device Manager tab, and checked the properties on your sound devices to see if the drivers are still installed?

Give us the full error message and let us know what system changes if any you have made.

Hi, I've just updated to win10 build 1607 (or whatever the latest number is) this morning and when I completed the update, I noticed the task bar constantly refreshing every 3-5 seconds. I believe the issue to be related to Daemon tools pro which keeps popping up a message saying the program is not compatible with this version of Windows. Unfortunately, when I try to uninstall it through add/remove programs in safe mode, explorer crashes and I'm unable to do so.

Is there any way to disable Daemon tools to see if it is causing my issue? I can open control panel in safe mode, but again I can't uninstall it. I can open explorer in regular mode but as soon as I right click or try to change directories, it freezes on me.

Thoughts?

Background ads sounds keep running on my laptop. The ads start about a minute after windows starts and keep running, sometimes even two, three or four ad sounds run simultaneously. I have tried various solutions given at this forum as well as many other forums but to no avail. I initially posted my problem at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/519885/background-ad-sounds-keep-running-on-my-laptop/ and got some help from Broni. As per his advice, I ran the DDS and created the logs which are attached.

Howdy, first time TSF user.
XP will not recognize when I load a CD other than the first one to go in since the comp has been restarted.
After restart if I load say CD-A, it will recognize fine. If I eject CD-A it will regognize the drive is empty. However if I load CD-B, XP thinks I have reinserted CD-A. I have to restart in order to get it to recognize any CD other than CD-A.
I have turned off AutoRun, and tried to refresh the drive to no avail.
Some comp specs:

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.

We have a web based software that we provide our clients that is accessed via a shortcut on their desktop. The first time the client accessed the site everything worked okay. However, when they try to access it now, it's almost like it is caching old information in there and not refreshing the website, so when they login it just pops back to the program's login screen.

We have tried clearing the history and made sure the reuse windows box was unchecked. Any ideas of what else we can try? I almost think something in IE9 is corrupt or not updating properly.

A:IE9 not Refreshing

I don't have an Internet Explorer 9 browser in front of me, but I'll take a stab at this, to see if I can help.

---

Press F12 while in your browser, to enter Development Tools.

Next, select the Cache menu (towards the top)

Then choose "always refresh from server"

---

This should effectively allow bypassing of cache, to show what's "really" there.

I need to do a reinstall, but I don't want to lose absolutely everything. I've got about 500gb of media I want to keep, and I've got a load of Steam games installed I don't really want to have to redownload. Will it keep all that?

And other than that, is it just like doing a reinstall?

A:What exactly does refreshing my PC keep?

When you reinstall the OS you would normally lose everything stored on the partition in question. Data on other partitions or drives should be untouched but for safety you should assume this will be lost as well. All applications, even if on a different partition or drive, will need to be reinstalled. All files of any importance need at least one backup copy while those of particular importance need 2 or more backup copies. Data can be lost dues to hardware failure and a variety of other causes as well. You need to be prepared when (not if) something happens.

I read a similar thread, but thought it better to start anew.

Win XP sp2
ASUS P5K VM MoBo
Onboard video.
Comodo Internet Suite (scanned.)

Every so often, I think randomly but maybe a minute or so, there is a quick flicker of my screen, and if I am mouse holding the scroll button, or making a selection, either text or image, or have my mouse on a menu choice, I lose that control. I have to re-select, or click and hold on the scroll button to regain control.

This happens in any programme: word processor, photo editor, browser etc.

Sometimes, when the flicker occurs, a tiny icon appears in the taskbar. It is too quick to see properly, band when I tried to video capture it, the flicker would not occur.

There is also a very brief burst of disc activity. Maybe 1/2 second.

So it looks as if something is refreshing something when it thinks there is little or no activity.The title bar of the window I am working in goes rapidly white, so the window is losing focus during the activity, then regaining it very rapidly.

I have not been using this machine very long, so I can't tell exactly when it started. When I first noticed it, I assumed I had simply lifted the mouse button or something.

I can start stripping stuff away to see if anything that I have loaded is causing it, but given its rapidity and random nature this could be time-consuming, so I am asking if anyone has seen this who could suggest a possible reason...somewhere to narrow it down a bit.

thanks for any help

Hi guys, I was a part of seven forums for awhile.

I'm trying to troubleshoot my PC. Hopefully I'll figure this out soon. I mean hell I'm A+ certified I feel ashamed even asking for help but..

Lately I've been having a lot of issues with corrupted files, and things not working in 8. IE, I can't get into the "change PC settings" screen instead it prompts me that files are corrupted and I should pop in my installation disk and refresh my settings. However I installed using a USB flash drive and have no DVD drive in my rig. So it won't let me refresh. I tried mounting the image I also tried following one of the guides here for refreshing it via USB with no avail. So instead I booted it straight up from the USB installation flash drive and chose troubleshoot my PC and tried refreshing it from there. It error'd out and gave me this "refresh your pc this option is not supported on the operating system you've selected"

My OS is currently installed on an SSD. Intel 520 series one. I've had issues with this drive in the past. Randomly my LoL won't launch and it'll say that it's been corrupted and i've had to reinstall.

I've tried doing sfc /scannow and it DOES find corrupted files and attempts to fix them, however after I reboot nothing has changed.

Any suggestions/input would be MUCH appreciated!

thanks.

Hi folks,
This is probably a stupid question, BUT, here goes.....
My Windows 7 Ultimate installation if getting sluggish to boot, it is now taking 3 to 4 minutes to get to a stage where I can work with it. Once up and running it is not too bad, but not as sharp as it used to be. The installation will be around 3 years old.

Is there any way to "refresh" this installation other that a complete re-install?

Regards,
Bob

A:Refreshing Windows 7

When Win7 is installed there should be a backup image saved of the finished install so that if it ever becomes sluggish or irreparable you can simply reimage it to the HD in 20 minutes. Your files need to be backed up separately, ideally in real time using a service such as Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with OneDrive.

If you haven't done that then you can go over the present install closely to check everything and optimize it using the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

There is a step for a Repair Install which wil reinstall the OS while keeping all of your programs, files and settings in place. But often corrupt settings can be passed back through so it is not anywhere near as effective as a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps are the same for retail.

A:Refreshing Pages

As far as I know, everyone has to do it, unless you use a program that does it for you, at a predetermined time interval.

The page you loaded, is the page you see, and it won't change.
After you load it, it becomes an old page.
Refreshing, loads a new page, which has the most recent post, at the time of the refresh.

Hi, how old is your laptop and what specs does it have. Try rebooting the laptop. If that doesn't work then make sure all of your files are saved and then take the battery out of the laptop and then put it back in. Almost every time my PC has a error with Windows 8 I take the battery out and then pu it back in and it works fine.

I am running Windows 8.1 on an HP computer less than a year old. It was working fine this morning when I started it up. I then went to a psychology assessment website and tried to download a pdf of assessment results. It wouldn't open in my Nuance PDF Pro program, so I emailed it to myself and opened in Adobe Reader. After that my desktop and open programs started flashing on and off. I was able to close programs and was left with the screen going blue, then wallpaper and task bar reloading, and then icons loading. The refresh is very quick, about 1 second. I was able to use the Windows + I key on one occasion to get to a place where I could run a restore to the previous day. When the computer restarted, it continued to refresh at a slower rate that gradually sped up to it's current speed of about 1 second. I was also able to get eset to run. It found two files of the Whilokii virus, which I had it clean. The problem persisted. I also tried removing the battery per a post on a similar problem someone had, and the problem persists. I have tried to get into safe mode, but the refresh is so fast that pressing Windows + I does not allow me enough time to press the Change PC Settings button. I also tried Ctrl-R to get into msconfig, but the dialogue box only flashes on momentarily and then refreshes. I am able to get into task manager and have it stay on the screen. Some web sites seem to 'refresh' themselves after 5-10 minutes.
Why is this done and how (html) is this done? thanks ahead of time

A:why and how do Web Pages keep 'refreshing'?

piece of cake
it's called a "Meta Refresh"

Just place the following in the head of the page

<meta http-equiv='refresh' content='10; url=somepage.html'>

the "10" in content is the number of seconds to wait before a refresh. So five minutes would be 300, and the "somepage.html" is the page you want to go to. So it can either be the same name as the current page, or you can use it to redirect to a different page

Hi and welcome

We could use your system specs to help you. Please fill them in as well as you can. They are in the lower left corner of your posts

The "blue circle" is the windows busy cursor. It can be caused by too little ram, too many apps open or a problem with the system.

Right click the taskbar>performance tab>click the memory tab on top to sort for mas ram using apps on top. Take a screen shot of it using the buil tin snipping tool (type snipping in search) > and upload it to us using the attachment icon (shaped like a paperclip) in the reply form

Hi guys....

I'm not 100% sure how to explain it, but i think it's a simple problem, only i don't know how to fix it....

Whenever i right-click on a movie file to delete/rename it, my monitor refreshes the screen (goes black then back to normal again) and it happens on every movie file i do it to, and i don't reckon it's good for the monitor doing that all the time...I don't even know why it started doing it, perhaps some new drivers turned something on.

Can anyone tell me how to stop it.... I'm running a Geforce 6200 TD128, 'cause maybe it's something to do with Nvidia's Driver settings, which i looked at and can't find the problem myself....

Any help is much appreciated Thanks.

A:Monitor Refreshing....

Right off the top of my head I would have to say it is your video drivers

right click on your desktop where there is not an icon
select properties
then click settings
what is your resollution set at ?
was it 16 bit or 32 bit ?&#8594; no , set it to 32 bit
YES
&#8595;
TRY THIS
you may also want to go to click on system in control panel, then hardware, then device manager
look for your video card ( display adapter)
there should not be a red " x" or " ! " next to it
click the plus sign next to display adapter
write down the model just incase
HIGHLIGHT and click uninstall
go up to the top of the list
make sure your pc name is highlighted
click on ACTION in the task bar
select rescan for changes

try a movie
did this work
yes&#8594; your done
no
&#8595;
you may need to download drivers from
either the manufacture of your pc, if OEM like Gateway, Dell , HP ...etc
or the manufacturer of the vid card

Hi

Sounds like it might be a sticky ALT key or Windows key. Have you tried a different keyboard?

If you don't have a spare keyboard to try, tap on all the keys a few times to make sure nothing is sticking and the next time it happens, quickly press the TAB key and see if it switches between open Windows like ALT-TAB does. If it does that means one of the ALT keys is sticking for sure. Or try pressing the letter e to see if it brings up Windows Explorer like WindowsKey-e does. Then it is the Windows key.

If it is a wireless keyboard, make sure that there are no other wireless mice or keyboards nearby that might have a key or button pressed down or are being used by somebody near you.

I dont even know how to call this problem. I tried every thread everywhere, found nothing like it.

So here's whats going on - pc screen is doing what appears to be refreshing itself on a mouse click. Randomly, not on every click. Fx, when changing tabs firefox will flash all white and no change will take place. Same for browsing harddrive or anywhere around. Sometimes it happens 2 to 10 times in a row. So it may take 10 attempts and 10 refreshing screens to navigate anywhere.
The worst is when a windows is minimized. To bring it up again can be a pain in the bottom. It just wont respond!
On top of that, rarely, but it will do multiple refreshes in a row which makes pc look like its having a stroke.

I noticed it began shortly after reg cleanup. System restore or such is not an option anymore at this point, unfortunatly.

An important exam is comming up and my laptop has to work till then!
Any help will be greatly appriciated!

This is an odd problem, but the first thing I'd check is to make sure your graphics drivers are up to date. If your graphics drivers are corrupt or missing, your computer then has to use your regular processor to draw the frames you see on the screen which can lead to odd behavior because it can't keep up. If the computer is being sluggish and not responding to maximizing windows and things like that, I'd also examine how much memory is being used by going into your task manager.

why do I have to continually refresh a web page in order to change it, windows 8.1, ie 11 and a Toshiba laptop

A:refreshing web pages

try the following, (I am on a computer with ie installed right now so the following may be slightly different)

open ie
open internet options - security tab
click on custom level to open security settings - internet zone
scroll down to misc
enable "allow meta refresh"
ok

you will still be reliant on the settings in the webpage itself so some pages will still have to be reset manually.

Hi I am currently running Win 7 64 bit on an Acer Aspire netbook and I have noticed the past couple of weeks that the icons on my desktop keep momentarily refreshing themselves every time I click on one of them to use (occasionally without clicking).

I have scanned with Malwarebytes,Superantispyware,SpyBot search & destroy,ESET online scanner,TDDS Killer and Microsoft Security Essentials (full scan) but haven't found anything.

Does anyone know if this issue is caused by possible malware infection or it is normal/windows error as I've read many conflicting things about this around the net?.

Any info/help on this and how it may be able to get solved would be most appreciated thanks.

A:Win 7 Refreshing Issue

In Control Panel, (icon view) select 'Troubleshooting'. Under Appearance and Personalization, select the Display Aero desktop effects.

In the resulting window, select the Advanced link at the bottom of the window and place a check mark in the Apply repairs automatically option.

Click the Next Button.

If the troubleshooter does not find any problems, select the Explore additional options button.

Select the Recovery Link.
Click the System Restore button.
Click the Next Button.

Select a Restore Point with a date just prior to when you first noticed this behavior.
Click the Next Button and follow the instructions to restore the system to that date and time.

sometimes my tray will act as if certain programs running in the tray have disappeared and will not display them. In the following pic I actually have kazaalite winmx and speedup running, but they are not shown. If I really want, I can just restart them, but it gets tedious. Anybody know if there is a way to reset the entire tray (kinda like restarting explorer resets the taskbar and all browsers (not ie))?

I recently performed a fresh install of XP Pro with service pack 2, and all has gone well with the exception of a couple of programs that I knew in advance would not work with SP2.

There is one other minor problem, however, that I can live with, but would like to resolve if possible.

The recycle Bin icon on the desktop does not automatically refresh and change from "empty" to "full" (or vice-versa) when putting files in it or when emptying it. It does change when I manually refresh the screen by keying F5.

Has anyone seen this problem before and/or have any suggestions as to if anything can be done to correct it?

Thanks in advance!

(Oh, yes, there have been no third party mods made to the recycle bin. No Norton, etc.)

Everything still kinda works but everytime I or any of my roommates log in to their accounts on our computer, the taskbar refreshes like every 10 seconds and the desktop disappears. It comes back a second later but every window I've opened doesn't show up again.
I ran a scan with my antivirus thingy and it says I have vurtumonde or something, a trojan, and always this Mal-Behav thing that it can't remove.
Anyway, nothing seems to help...

Is there a fix?

A:CD/DVD media not refreshing

Hi Martina

This was a problem in Windows XP that was (supposed to be) fixed in a Service Pack [I can't remember if it was Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2]. If your computer hasn't the latest Service Pack installed on it, make sure to visit Windows Update & grab that, plus the 40 or so Updates that have been issued since SP2 was first released. SP2 is a very large update = if you access the Internet by dialup, see if a kind friend can download SP2, and many of the updates since, for you = and burn them onto a CD. It will save a great deal of time.

SP2 direct download --- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
2006 .iso images of updates --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086

If the computer is already up-to-date on patches, let us know.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

A:quality refreshing

It sounds like you had internet accellerator software using a proxy which fetched the page for you and recompressed image files to low quality. When you right clicked it gave you the option to download the full quality one.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your internet accellerator. Of course it could be they just no longer support this option.

Hi,

I wonder if any one can help?

The problem:-

Pc running windows XP Pro boots ok into windows desktop THEN!

All the desktop icons including the task bar seem to disappear for a couple of seconds as if the PC is refreshing the desktop, but then once they reappear again, in another couple of seconds they disappear again! This goes on for as long as the PC is switched on....

I have managed on occasion to get to get to firefox and then to run online scans for Spyware / Virus's, all the time I was doing this, the window with the scan stayed on top and remained open but the desktop icons and task bar continued to appear and disappear behind it.

I have tried a repair install but it is still the same.

I would rather not wipe the drive clean and start again as with most people I am sure, as the disc size gets bigger and bigger = backing up things gets more and more difficult. (i don't have everything on this 120Gb disc backed up, so would rather not lose it!)

Any ideas what else I can try?
Regards,

John

The problem began yesterday. Whenever I have my documents open (eg: "My Music"), I could be scrolled halfway down the page when it inexplicably "refreshes" itself, bringing me back to the top of the page! I'm just assuming that's what's happening here (refreshing). Likewise, the icons on my desktop will momentarily blink as if I had clicked "refresh". It seems to happen every couple of minutes or so and is becoming quite annoying. Does anyone know what could be causing it?

A:Refreshing GUI during process

You can use the Java Swing component Timer. It is really useful when, for example, you have a progress bar to display on your GUY.
In your case, you have to refresh 4 times at a certain frequency (0.25 second in the following piece of coding).
Code:
[SIZE=2]import javax.swing.Timer;

private int timerCount;
private Timer timer;

private void card1MouseClicked(java.awt.event.MouseEvent evt) {

if (game.checkCard(game.getPlayerHand().get(1))) {
game.playCard(1);
if (direction) {
timerCount = 0;
timer = createTimer();
timer.start();
....

private Timer createTimer () {
ActionListener action = new ActionListener () {
public void actionPerformed (ActionEvent event) {
player1.setBackground(new java.awt.Color(0, 102, 0));
game.playComp(timerCount);
timerCount++;
if (timerCount == 4) timer.stop();
}
};

return new Timer (250, action);
}[/SIZE]

When I purchased my computer I bought Windows 8 64 bit OEM. So my computer came preinstalled and I didn't get a disc (with OEM you don't get a disc right?). Anyway, I want to refresh my computer but it asks me to insert a disc and I have upgraded to Windows 8.1.

I read some of the guides on refreshing without a disc but they say you need a retail key not an OEM key. Am I pretty much screwed and have to go buy a retail key if I want to refresh my OS?

A:Refreshing Windows 8.1

Follow directions here: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

Shows you how to download a legal copy of Windows 8, no key required for the download.

See here for how to do a Clean Install of Windows 8/8.1: Clean Install - Windows 8

It will use the key embedded in the BIOS so you will not have to enter one.

Make sure you backup any data you don't want to lose before you do this.

My laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ62, dual A3, 3Gb RAM, pretty much most bqasic model for this computer. The problem I am having is that the screen wont refresh. Not that it's flickering, or off, or bleeding: the screen will not refresh. If I press down/bend in a certain way at the top left section of the screen case, about a quarter of the way across the case, the screen will refresh, but only so long as I continue to bend/press down in that way. Once I let go, the screen wont refresh any longer. Other symptoms are the screen will turn white when powering up the laptop, and in order to get any sort of picture you need to press down/bend the case, as mentioned above, and open and cloose the laptop. I'm fairly certain its a cable within that's broken, but I don't know which cable it is. If anybody knows the cable or has any other solutions, please respond.Thanks!~Kenmathishd

Hello all, TIA.
I am trying to refresh my 8 install in the hope it will correct a couple of little issues on one of my notebooks.
The process went along fine until it decided to see if the PC was 'ready' to install.
Despite the fact that the battery is full, it insists on me having the power plugged in. I did that and it refuses to accept that it is plugged in, it just keeps telling me to plug it in.
I have checked the power point, the cable seems fine, it is plugged in everywhere it should be and there is a little light says that I am plugged in, which goes out the instant I unplug.

How can I get this thing to do what it should?
Thanks

When did the problem start? If it started after you installed a program or made any updates in your computer, you might wanna try system restore.

First, start your computer in safe mode that way you can access system restore.

I am running Windows 8.1. Originally I had Windows 8 installed on my machine and I updated to Windows 8.1. I have files that are corrupted and I intend refreshing my PC but the process involves inserting the installation disk. But the installation disk I have is for Windows 8. Does that mean, after refreshing my PC, the operating system will be back to Windows 8 and I will have to download Windows 8.1. all over again? And would all my settings, documents and e-mail folders all be wiped out? If so, how do I make backups of these? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

A:Refreshing PC with Windows 8.1

Hello Mike, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Unless you created a custom refresh image sometime after updating to Windows 8.1, then yes it'll refresh back to Windows 8.

If you are using a Microsoft account, then your personal settings are synced by default, and will be restored afterwards. Your user account and files in your "C:\Users\(user-name)" folder will not be affected by a refresh. Here's more details on what would be affected by a refresh.

Refresh Windows 8

What email program are you using? It would be a good idea to back up anything for it to be safe.

Well I got my laptop about a year ago, and just recently it has been having this really weird problem(what makes it more strange is that it doesn't happen all the time- just most of the time). Sometimes when I try to click on a desktop icon, all the icons on the desktop will flicker like they are being refreshed. Then when I open up Mozilla(problem also happens in IE) the page will refresh so quick that 'm not able to navigate anywhere. When I trying exploring my computer or the control panel, I will get the hourglass image on the mouse flickering also, so I'm not able to navigate anywhere. When I try to use excel the "Go To" screen in excel constantly pops up right when I hit cancel. I've run virus scans and spyware scans in safe mode and cleaned up what little they found, and the problem keeps persists. This problem also occurs in Safe Mode but not as frequently. Thanks for you time and help.

Running Windows XP Pro:

My CD drive has recently been acting up and my ever-diligent Google searches have revealed nothing..even when keywording the keywords . Seems that when I eject a data CD, the CD's contents still show in Explorer. I hit F5....still nothing. I insert another CD and it still refuses to change the contents. I log off, log back on and the same contents are still showing. I have Explorer refresh rate set to 00 (fastest speed) in the registry. Seems that only when I either restart the machine or flip back and forth between drives several times will Explorer finally change the contents to reflect the new CD's contents (I have auto-play off and would rather keep it that way). At first I suspected that it had to do with my burned data CDs, but it is doing it with commercial CDs also. Any body have a clue? Perhaps a stubborn cache somewhere that I can get rid of (CDFS cache maybe?)?. I realize that Windows has always had a glitch with Explorer refreeshing, but this is ridiculous.....

A:CD Drive volume not refreshing

Just FYI for anyone else encountering this problem: I read a blurb elsewhere regarding a different problem where someone suggested that Nero Burning Rom (what I use) may have conflicts with Roxio Easy CD. The Windows XP CD writing utility is a watered down version of Roxio. So I went into Services and shut down the XP CD Writing service--don't use it anyway. Now the CD drive contents refresh normally. Problem solved.

This is making me nuts - Since I installed W2K on my machine (667-Celeron) I can drag'Ndrop files/folders, insert floppies/ZipDisks/CD's, etc - all normal stuff - but the Explorer tree (left pane) does not refresh...even if I do a View/Refresh. It only refreshes properly if I close Explorer and re-open it. Thoughts, prayers, special curses ??

A:Win2K Explorer not refreshing

I have seen the same many times. If I add a folder, it won't showw up on the left, but it will show on the right if I click on the next level up folder. Then just double-click on the new folder and the left pane will update. Another undocumented feature!!

After some software problems, The fix was to Refresh my PC, despite me selecting "Keep my files" it removed loads of my software including ones I cannot get without a disc,

Is there a way I can roll back to before I did this, since I still have the Windows.old file with all my things in, Do I just Copy and replace my files with the things from Windows.old to the new one or is there a way to roll back completely?

installing all my stuff again is not worth for a temporary fix.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Jason

A:Is There A Way To Roll Back After Refreshing PC

Hello Jason,

The use of Refresh and Reset can be a bit confusing. The following tutorial explains the differences and offers a way to do it without losing anything. As explained Refresh does keep your files but not your apps.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

I realise this is too late for you but you should be able to get back to a previous installation if your windows.old folder is still there and nothing has been deleted from it. Usually the windows.old folder only lasts for about 30 days before Windows automatically deletes the contents.

The following tutorial shows you how to do this:

Windows 10 - Go Back to Previous Windows
