You said they do not download OR fail but then you said they failed, which is it?

Make sure you have restarted your computer since then. Try updating ONLY important updates, possibly selecting a few at a time to download and update. Let me know if it still fails. Restart>select some updates (important ones first, then slowly working your way to other updates you want to have installed)>installl>restart again. If it works keep doing this method

These two things likely don't have an effect on the updates, but try them anyway:

1. Do you know if you have all your drivers currently updated?

2. Has windows been activated yet?

I've had this problem for a while. Every time my windows tries to update, it fails.

I appreciate this is very vauge, but I don't know what data you need to find the root of this problem. If you could tell me what information I need to provide I would be more than happy to do so.

Many thanks, and merry christmas to all of you.

I've just done a fresh install of windows 7. And IE worked at that point. Then, I did the Windows update, downloaded, and installed about a hundred updates. After that, IE stopped working, and gave the following error message.

The device or resource is not set up to accept connections on port https

I'm trying to get IE working after the Windows 7 updates.

Help!

Note, I used system restore to undo the updates, and get to this page.

A:Browsers dont work after windows 7 updates

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I'm not sure that I know what could have gone wrong, but I do have a few questions for you.

Did you use a DVD from the manufacturer of your computer to do this fresh install?
Or did you use a retail W7 DVD?

Did the DVD already have service pack one installed?

Hello, over the past day and a half this problem has gotten a lot worse. Windows automatic updates cannot be turned on, this has spread to norton automatic updates as well.

recently started to get frequent stop errors having to do with ntfs.sys or srtsp.sys files.

ive also been getting adult popups in internet explorer and the computer seems to be running slower than norm.

Help would be appreciated asap as i need this comp to study for exams :S

Thank You

You can upgrade but no higher than 7260 (for 32 bit) you will need a serial number from MS but its free. You will love it

New Windows worm builds massive botnetHalf a million PCs infected, botnet still growing, says researcher The worm exploiting a critical Windows bug that Microsoft Corp. patched with an emergency fix in late October is being used to build a new botnet, a security researcher said today.Ivan Macalintal, a senior research engineer with Trend Micro Inc., said that the worm, which his company has dubbed "Downad.a" -- it's called "Conficker.a" by Microsoft and "Downadup" by Symantec Corp. -- is a key component in a new botnet that criminals are creating."We think 500,000 is a ball park figure," said Macalintal when asked the size of the new botnet. "That's not as large as some, such as [the] Kraken [botnet], or Storm earlier, but it's still starting to grow."Last week, Microsoft warned that the worm was behind a spike in exploits of a bug in the Windows Server service, which is used by the operating system to connect to network file and print servers. Microsoft patched the service with an emergency fix it issued Oct. 23, shortly after it discovered a small number of infected PCs in Southeast Asia. However, the new worm is a global threat, said Macalintal. "This has real potential to do damage," he said. Trend Micro has spotted infected IP addresses on the networks of Internet service providers (ISPs) in the U.S., China, India, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. The worm first appeared about a week and a half ago, and... I decided to try to free up some space on my computer so i went through the usual... deleting unwanted programs, disc cleanup, defrag... when i came back in the defrag was taking too long so i cancelled it deciding i would finish it later (i never heard cancelling a defrag early would cause problems). i also let the annoying "windows has a critical update it would like to install" install in my computer (usually i ignore them)

i came back to my computer later to listen to some mp3s. i use MusicMatch jukebox as my default. clicking on the icon a few times didnt open the program and neither did clicking on an mp3 file. i tried to open windows media player, which opened, but a few seconds later was "not responding". my msn will start to go through the motions of signing in, but then will also go to "not responding". my internet explorer works but only sometimes... and then my windows explorer didnt want to work all the time. i restarted in safe mode to pull a few important things off the computer before it got worse and then restarted again. norton anti virus started having problems with the internet worm software.

so i tried system restore... but almost every restore point will not work. It goes through the motions, restarts, and then states that it was unable to restore to that point. in the last month i only found two that would complete, Jan 1st and the last restore point immediately before the problems (labled as the windows update install)... Dear All,

For a  long time I was trying to protect the home PCs W Vista 7 system w a few tools available but seems to be that I failed miserably.

Now Windows does not downloads updates and Sec Essentials (working better than AVG before) does not update as it used to.

i tried to look at the connections and the programs themselves but did not see any results. It seems to be that quick scan did not found anything (Sec Essentials) and I am not aware of any running processes that would be suspicious.

I would need some advice how to scan and find the culprit (have some former malware removers from a run 3 yrs before but dont know whether I will succeed this time.)

All help would be appreciated.

My computer keeps turning off with no warning, and I keep losing work, it is trying to configure updates but gets to the end of configuring stage 3 and then says it failed and reverting back. This takes about an hour from start to finish, it used to do this occasionally but now has done it for three days in a row.

When I go to security center this message comes up.

Windows security center - security center cant change your automatic updating settings.

When going into manually change, the windows update page has noting in it except a green shield with a tick in and two arrow drop downs with nothing in them and a drop down with times in it but the rest of the page is blank.

when i go into control panel windows update there is an orange sheild with ! in it and next to it says #element module header text# and underneath #actioncustominstallimportantt and underneath that #actioncustominstalloptionalte the rest of the page is blank. if i click on one of the action------ headers i get to a blank page.

any help would be greatly appreciated and preferably in non technical terms as i am not very cumputer literate.

For the past day windows wants to install the same 4 updates over and over, I have windows update set to download and let me choose when to install.

I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework.

Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM.
Windows wants to install the same four kb files again.
How do I stop this?

A:Windows 7 updates same for updates every time it checks for updates

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So you might want to reinstall it using its standalone installer since it may not have uninstalled correctly anyway.

Hi, I am Emy from the Netherlands. Wish you all a nice day!

I have troubles with - at least - one of the computers in the little network here. I will describe some of the troubles.
-Links to internetpages on the desktop dont work. I need to paste those in a blank window.
-2 weeks ago the home internetpage was blocked. After looking in a lot of forums I found how to change the homepage to Google. (by changing the registry)
-Online scanners for spyware dont start/are interrupted or dont find anything wrong
-Windows installer is coming up after every click I make to install Symantec Antivirus. But Symantec is already installed.
-I tried programs like Ccleaner and ATF; also Combofix. The last one was also interrupted (black screen). I installed the recovery console. Dont know how to delete this console.
-Even when I dont use this computer, it is like the computer is busy - at times (sounds like when using a program busy converting media files)
-I couldnt activate my membership. Not using the first link, nor the second one. Got a message that something wrong.
-I found srchassctl in the registry. Erased the Search Assistant. After rebooting ACMRU was gone, but SrchAssCtl is here again
-I found msmsgs a lot of times on this computer. I think the problems started with a message in the Live messenger.

Now I will paste the properly files to this topic. DDS and Attach

Windows XP Home SP1
I am helping a lady that her harddrive went bad so Dell put in a new one. I put the antivirus and some programs back on for her but I went to windows updates cause there should be a whole lot of updates there such as sp1 and all the updates that sp1 would have now (I told her she does not want sp2 right now) so where do I get the updates and how do I know what updates should be downloaded, it does not show any updates in add/remove programs and at the windows update site it only showed one update which I downloaded, but there has to be a whole bunch, anyone know anything about this?? Where to get the ones she needs and what ones they are??, Hope so Thanks

I got some updates last night and unfortunately my fix didn't work so I'll unpin this topic.

I keep getting Error message: Install Failure after Windows updates are downloaded and Windows attempts to install those updates.

The download is successfull, however, after Windows 7 attempts to install those updates I get this message:

Configuring Windows Update. Do Not Turn off computer.

After Windows attempts the installations of those updates, I get the following message: Failure configuring Service Pack. Reverting Changes. Error_install_failure (0x80070643).

I contacted Microsoft on the problem via emails....they went through a number of trouble shooting techniques....but after all of their recommendations, all they could tell me was to reinstall Windows 7.

I really would not like to do that. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

I have HP Pavilian dv6-3010 us Entertainment Notebook

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I have never posted on a forum before so apologies if I am doing this wrong. The problem started when I tried to plug in my (new) iphone to my Dell pc. The device was not detected so I tried to update my itunes software - update failed and I received a Windows 7 error. After searching through multiple forums and trying to download windows utility cleaner, etc - nothing has helped. Also, if I try to run the 'Check for Updates" link on my computer - if NEVER stops searching for updates and there for I cant update anything. Not sure where to start

A:Windows Check for updates keeps running-all installation/updates fail

Let's start with the easy stuff

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

A:How Important Are Ms Office Updates? Are They Included In Windows Critical Updates?

I don't have that detection tool either. At least some of the office updates are available through the windows update feature. You can also navigate to the Office updates site from the windows update site. There are no problems with installing the office updates separately. In fact, I generally download only 1 or 2 updates at a time as I am on dial-up.

Hi bro,I had the same problem 3 days ago and I have solved the problem so, I think, I can help you, first of all I need to know if you have any antivirus tool intalled on your computer,if it so,[download CLEANER sofware from filehippo.com-it's important]uninstall them, for this action use safe mode by pressing F8 button, when you boot with safe mod you will not be able to uninstall your antivirus, because you have loaded only the drivers that needs safe mod, that's why you must delete your antivirus manually, for best result go to control panel-->folder options-->mark "show hidden files, folders, archives" apply and ok then go to user folder and open AppData\Local\"antivirus folder" and delete it,after this open AppData\Roaming\"antivirus folder" and delete it as well,at the end,you have to delete the main folder of your antivirus, that is installed on C or another drive.for example:C:\Program Files\ESET.After that open cleaner go to REGISTRY and scan for issues and if you get[I am sure you will get errors] any problem, fix them[delete them, you don't need to save registry settings before deleting] after cleaning registry, you have to run cleaner,so, go to software main window and press RUN CLEANER button[it's the last step] and restart your computer with normal mode. Now you can install updates and configure your windows safely.I hope this will help you

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

Suddenly Windows 7 has stopped installing Windows Updates. It downloads, then creates restore point, starts installation, but then comes back with the error code 800F0900. This happens with all the updates when carried out individually, critical or optional. I first went through the process of clearing all the Start-up Programs in the Services section of msconfig. As that did not solve it I then stopped all but MS services, and that did not solve it.  I tried the Microsoft .NET Setup Verification Tool. This said there were problems that it could not fix and sent a report to Microsoft.  Following an earlier thread on this site, I installed and used the Windows Repair program from Tweeking.com. This failed to solve the problem. Does any one have any other possible advice to help solve this problem ?

A:Windows Updates will not install. Error code 800F0900 for all updates.

I would try running the System Update Readiness Tool:  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858 .

1. No. You either do Windows update and Office update, or you do Microsoft update, which does both at once.

2. I think so, but I am not positive. If you need it, it will install it, or, if you decline, you may not get updates. One way to find out, try it.

I have a Dell XPS 15 Z laptop with 6 GB of RAM, 4 x 2.53 GHz processors and 500 GB hard drive which is only about half full. The operating system is Windows 7 Pro/ 64. All updates are current. I have Kaspersky anti-virus, malware bytes, & spybot search and destroy. All of which say the computer is clean.
I have repeatedly successfully installed 2 Windows updates:

Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2836939)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2858302)

Then, within a a few minutes I am notified that 2 new updates are available... The same ones. Just to make sure the update were truly successful, I have reinstalled them several times with the same result.

Occasionally there are other Windows updates included along with my two familiar ones. The others install fine and I never hear anything more about them. But the two above will soon come back as new updates available.

Though I can certainly ignore responding to these update notifications, it would be kind and nice to get it fixed.

Thanks Larry

Hi, it seems like I get no more updates offered when I search for updates. My latest important updates are from 05.10.13. Since then I only get the same 42 optional updates shown. Shouldn't there be a few new ones (important and optional ones) since one month? Yesterday I read about the new IE11, that didn't show up either. Is there a website with a history of all released updates so I can check if there are any updates released/available that I didn't get offered in the last month?

A:No new Windows updates shown when 'search for updates' - Problem?

IE 11 isn't being offered through Windows Updates yet, except in certain areas.
The latest Important Updates should have been installed around 8th October
What happens if you attempt to install any of the optional updates?
There is no formal list of updates, since the list may vary from machine to machine - however, the listing in the forum stick here is kept pretty much up-to-date.

I have 2 updates that have failed to install on my computer. They are KB954430 and KB973688 and with an error of 643. I?ll explain the computer first then what I have tried.
My computer has Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, 1 TD hard drive, and 8GB of RAMM. I just purchased it as a refurbished computer from Newegg about a week and and this is how it starts out. This should be fun. The only thing that I have done to the computer is add Office, McAfee Internet Security, and Photoshop.
Had automatic updates yesterday and these 2 failed? KB954430 and KB973688 had error code 643.
Looked online with the update and error code and found the solution given below on the Microsoft website.
Ran the stand alone install for both KB954430 and KB973688 and got the following error:

Hi there

We got the crashed on machine running on Windows 10 started on last Wednesday and it's been working well for almost 1 month. After troubleshooting and restoring, we came across it's something to do with the Intel Drivers Display update that might causing this.

Once we restored the machine, the Windows Updates has already listed the driver ready to install as well all KBs. My question how do I stop/clear this list from running?

To prevent this update automatically on the driver, I went to the System > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings > No. However this only preventing it running in the future and I need to stop appearing from the list as stated previously.

I came across previously with Windows 7 which is relating on one of particular updates that causing stuck on Windows Updates ... I know there is away to stop this action and clear up this updates cataloq. But not sure on Windows 10.

I'm appreciated your feedback and comment.

Thanks

I am using Office 2013 Pro & it does not show updates in the normal Windows Update section on my computer. I have to refer to any Office application, select File & then Accounts to see that I have automatic updates selected & the update number, but it does not tell me if it is the latest update, so I have to check to see that it is the latest, which it is apparently.
I would like to be able to see which Office updates are available & to install them as I do with the usual Windows Updates. Can anyone suggest a solution please.

A:How do I get Office 2013 updates to show in Windows Updates.

Just a random thought. Does your computer have the "Click-to-Run" version of Office installed? Updates for the C2R version do not appear in Windows Update or WSUS. Updates are downloaded in the background automatically (whether you want them to or not).

You can identify C2R by looking under the File tab. There will be a button that shows update options (on or off) and the version number. Another way to identify C2R is in Window's Programs & Features. With C2R, you no longer have the ability to add or delete Office applications.

Until the October 2014 updates I would always receive a sytray notice of which updates had been installed. To clarify, after new Windows Updates were installed and with or without a reboot of the system, I would receive a systray notification that new updates had been installed and upon clicking that notification a window would open and show the updates that had been installed and success or failure status.

I no longer receive that notification. This was true for the October and November patch Tuesday updates. I can open Windows Update and select View Update History and see that the updates were installed but the systray notification only showed the latest installation history and was more convenient that having to open Windows Update to view the update history.

Anyone have any idea as to what caused the systray notification to stop working after updates were installed? OS is Win 7 Home Premium SP 1.

TIA for any replies.

Hi everyone!

Windows updates are available in different categories: important, recommended and optional.

As noted, some of them, for reasons not known by users, have broken the OS of different users.

In your opinion, what is the best option of choice?

Grateful to all!

A:Windows updates - critical updates and / or recommended

Make a full system backup of your machine and then install all updates.

I have had a problem with updates failing for a couple months. I have worked with both HP and Microsoft's Vista support teams to no avail. i have tried five or six different methods at the request of the HP and MS support teams to overcome this problem.

i consistently get messages that "Host Proces for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" and that windows will notify me if a solution is available.

the updates generate an error WindowsUpdate_800706BA.

Windows Update does not work, Windows Media Center updates do not work, and now the HP Printer updates no longer work. I'm kind of hanging open here without any of the security patches, OS fixes, and other updates.

any new suggestions would be welcomed!! My MS support guys just stopped responding to my replies about three weeks ago. i fear i'm at the end of his script!!

Use Windows Update to find driver updates

In Windows Update click Custom Install in the main column, and then click Select optional hardware updates in the left-hand column.

Windows Update examines all parts of your system to determine what needs updating and it may recommend more than just driver updates. It's a good idea to visit Windows Update regularly for driver updates and other non-critical updates.

So I successfully installed a total of 20 Windows updates for my Windows 7 x64 installation on Tuesday 11, 2014. I think 18 of them were "important" and 2 were "recommended" for x64 systems.

Now I have received four additional update notifications through Windows Update, one at a time. I installed the first without giving it much thought, after which I was asked to reboot. Everything seemed fine after reboot until I tried my Firefox browser, it looked all wrong and I could no longer read any of the menu headings. It was essentially non-functional. Then I tried Internet Explorer 11. It simply failed with an error window indicating that it could not start and it was checking for a solution to the problem.

So then I tried to uninstall the update, and I receive a message that an error occurred and the un-installation was unsuccessful. So then I restored Windows from an image file I had just made, and all was well again of course.

When this update came back through Windows Update, I researched it a bit and was surprised to find that it was from 2012. Now it is possible that I missed an important or recommended update, but I know I've checked Windows Update numerous times between 2012 and now, and this never showed up before. I also doubt that I missed an important or recommended update since they are selected by default, and I don't deviate from that. But I didn't verify since I couldn't find an easy way to search the 100+ updates installed on my m... Read more

I ignore the pop-up window from the notifications area telling me Windows updates are ready to install, I'm busy. Then I'm ready to do it, but there's no icon in the notification area to click to do the install.

I've even gone as far as to do a manual install, just to make sure I've got the latest update. I know I'm fully updated, and then the pop-up window comes up telling me it has that update ready to install again!

Is there a way to retrieve the updates Automatic Updates has ready to install? Reboot?!

Will manually updating confuse Automatic Updates?

I have done the following to solve the problem, but NOTHING has helped:

- SURT - System Update Readiness Tool

- Windows Update Diagnostic (Found Errors 80080005 and 80070057, which it could not fix, but it did fix "service registration is missing or corrupt)

- Microsoft Fixit

- Windows KB947821 Hotfix (could not install, tried for days on end, does nothing)

- sfc /scannow (3 times - "has found corrupt files but couldn't fix all of them")

- Ran antivirus - clean

- Reset my Windows Update Components

- Restore Windows to previous date
I've included a CBS.log file BELOW. Once extracted, it takes a little while to open the log, please be patient.

My folks PC has Windows 7 and since it has been working perfectly they chose NOT to install SP1 until absolutely required.

This past Tuesday their computer received none of the normal security updates or patches. It did strangely receive the May 2013 Malicious Software Removal Tool but that was it.

What I want to know is it OK to manually download the latest security updates (for May 2013) and will the OS recognize them without a problem and if I do this would it conflict with when I actually install SP1 at a later date.

Any experts please chime in. Thanks.

I recommend installing Service Pack 1 first before you install the security updates . Windows requires the SP to get the recent security updates .

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise x64 virtual machine that I use as a template in my vSphere environment that I keep up to date with all Windows updates. This VM only contains Windows 7 in its disk.
Last time I was able to fully patch this machine was back in May 2016; a few nights ago I tried to update Windows 7 updates and it's stuck at Checking for updates... (I let it sat there for 12 hours)
I read several blogs on resetting Windows Updates services (stopping BITS and Windows Services then deleting all files in Windows\SoftwareDistribution) and none of them seem to work. I also ran a Windows Update troubleshooting tool that is supposed to Fix
problems with Windows Updates - didn't work either as it tries to get updates from the internet.
Next, I decided to create a brand new Windows 7 machine, and tried to run Windows Updates...nothing, still gets hung up at Checking for updates...
Anyone has any ideas on how to fix Windows Updates so I can get updates? It seems that something changed recently that broke it. Windows 10 patching seems to work just fine as I've had no issues with my Windows 10 machines.
Thanks!

I have Windows 7 and something appears to be keeping it from finding and installing ANY updates, let alone Windows 10.

No new updates for MONTHS. "Checking for updates" can run forever and not find anything.

I have the Windows 10 icon & the GWX.exe (or whatever it's called), but once I click on it, it disappears.

I did make a USB of the Windows 10 software, but I don't want to attempt that until I know the Windows update (ANY updates) will be fixed through that install, or whether I need to fix that problem first before attempting to install Win10 from a USB or disc.

Did a few run-of-the-mill basic troubleshooting and suggestions, but nothing has worked.

I'm not tech savvy, but I know enough about computers to do some real damage in the really pissed off state I'm in. Sometimes, like now, I'm smart enough to know not to go there and ask around instead.

Help.

I tried restoring to the last restore point when Windows updates were working fine. This restore failed, likely due to the fact that the last restore point when updates DID work was months prior.

Hello all,

I have been having a problem for quite some time now. I'm unsure when it started happening because it's been going on for such a long time now. So, here's whats been going on.

Every time i try to delete something, it finishes deleting and the 'Deleting' Windows stays open and it tells me its calculating how much time is remaining and it says 0 bytes left. o to get rid of the window i have to restart windows explorer from the task manager. Another problem i've been having is that when i rename a file, i can't X out of the window that i renamed the file in and i have to restart windows explorer for it to work. After i restart WE the folder/file is renamed. The last problem linked to this is that whenever i move/copy a file, it keeps the 'Moving' window open and i can't close it unless i restart windows explorer.

It's a real pain to deal with this and if anyone could help me out that would be great...

I have an HP desktop running Windows Vista x64 Bit. If you need anymore info just let me know. Thanks guys

I think that we may be able to solve your problem. Initially, a few reasons come to mind for your problem. Lets go step by step
Update and make a full anti virus scan
Download and make a full scan with Malwarebytes.
Run an SFC scan
System Files - SFC Command
Run 3 times if errors are found.
Finally, if nothing else is found, hit alt cntrl and delete at the same time on your keyboard, bring up task manager.
Go to process, click show process from all users. Then give us a screen shot.

hi all

First I know this has been asked a many times but no solutions seems to work for me. I have a bunch of stuff going wrong and all seems to related to each other.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
That is how the problem progressed:

1. I was trying to enable Telnet service and found out that 'Turn Windows Features on/off' in Control panel > Programs and Features is a blank list.

I checked on internet and i found out that it means my windows update wont be working as well so i check it:

2. Windows update gives the error 80070002 and it does not check for updates.

3. Again check net and it said to run sfc/scannow in command prompt (as administrator). I did it. and it gives error 'Windows Resource Protection can't execute the command'.

I have tried everything. I have tried:
msconfig.exe to enable/disable services and restarting and rechecking.
Uninstalling my Avast Antivirus.
Running MS Fixit tool.
I have checked disk check in advanced startup options.
Deleted 'C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download' contents and recheck the Windows update facility.
Nothing works. I dont have Windows CD coz my laptop came installed with windows.

Thanks for reading. and helping

I bought my copy of Windows Vista Home Premium yesterday, during installation, It said its not able to update from XP, and that it needs to do a Fresh install, when I boot up my PC now, It keeps asking me to choose what I want to Boot, XP or Vista, is there a way I can delete XP, I want to only have Vista on here now?

Regards

Thanks for the Help.

A:How to Uninstall Windows XP, after a Windows Vista Install (I dont want to OS on PC)

honestly if you don't have anything important on vista yet the easiest thing might to just reinstall vista and just format the whole hard drive during setup.

I am mainly looking for input...I havent tried W8 at all so essentially know very little about it.
I am usually pretty fast to try out a new OS and accept the new technology ....but I failed to do such with W8.
From what little I have read some just dont like it....Change is often bad as people want familiarity so they dont seem lost on the new OS.
So with{un} familiarity aside ...I am interested more in its short comings such as useful functions lost if there are any.
Also is it multi tasking friendly.
I notice right away that the desktop is essentially gone as we know it and is filled with your business for everyone to see.
What navigation has changed, what user tools are missing etc...And while we are at it what improvements are present that may make it more secure etc

Here i am again, complaining about my system..
As my previous topics, this one i think is more serious as i cant boot nor open up advance boot options(f8 dont work). As soon the manufacturers logo show off, an error: "Disk read error. Press ctr+alt+del to resatrt." It remains unless i press shutdown. Power on and it still shows the same.

I havent finished the download of the iso(to be used as a recovery method) thats why i opt for another way which is to recover a backup copy of my registry(which iv done by manually exporting it).  However, i have encrypted it before with my administrative user account. Now, im not able to decrypt it via cipher or keys as if i run: "cipher /c thatfilename.reg" it informs me that only the user(my account) and certificate thumbprint can decrypt it. No found backup certificate or keys. Bad for me i dont know how to recover it via the certificate thumprint....

My last option that i try is use EaseUs Data Recovery Wizard, which i have googled about tools that can decrypt files...
Glad it runs even im only using the recovery console. I installed it on my memory card(as my pc can still detect it). Im new to this tool and still dont know what should i click on for a spedific purpose. But i have tried the partition recovery, since im thinking that maybe it could still detect missing/lost files on the drive by which windows is installed..  It search then rebuild directories for more than 4 hours. remaining time is already at 00:... Since the drive still works you might want to give SpinRite a try.  This isn't free and will probably run for days before it fixes your problems.  I do not see you getting your data back any other way since it is encrypted.  Encryption is great for keeping information private, but I've see a whole lot of data lost due to encryption.  In the end only you can say how much your data is worth.

Hi,
Why do we get the option "Windows Updates. Important updates are available. Go to PC settings to install them" on the logon screen? Need to remove this option but without altering the update functionality. We are using SCCM for windows update.
Can you help how to remove it by GPO or any other option for large scale systems (5000+). At present the user cannot install the updates as it has been restricted. Attached the screen shot also.

I did search out this problem...very old posts recommended I start a new thread.

For the last 2 weeks every time I shut down automatic install...installs the same 8 updates.

I'd appreciate any help in solving this problem.

Thanks,
Toni

This thread is currently "under construction", and will be edited for the remainder of today.   Please excuse any blank spaces or crossed-out "placeholders" for items expected to be announced.

Today is Microsoft Tuesday --- the SECOND Tuesday of the month --- on which Microsoft is expected to release its monthly cycle of Windows security updates.   Based on previous history, they should become available at 1 P.M. [USA - Eastern STANDARD Time]
Reminder that there is a new procedure:   Windows Update for consumer PCs will offer a [single] security monthly quality update (also known as the "monthly rollup") that will contain all new security fixes for a month... plus fixes from all previous monthly rollups.
A rollup is simply multiple patches rolled together into a single update. These rollups will replace individual patches . Each monthly rollup will supersede the previous month's rollup. The ultimate goal is for these monthly rollups to become fully cumulative, which will happen as the team adds patches released in the past, so users need only to install the latest single rollup.
For more information, see http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-issues-more-guidance-for-admins-ahead-of-first-monthly-windows-patch-rollups/

I am working on one of our VP's laptops that was infected with LOTS of viruses and malware. I have run the following on it, which has helped but has not eliminated the problems: Super Anti Spyware, TCPIP Winsock Fixer, Microsoft Security Essentials (which I had to update manually as it couldn't get the updates directly), TDSS Killer (which found nothing), and finally ComboFix, which ran and initially complained that it detected a rootkit and had to reboot. I let it reboot and run though completely, but afterwards can still not get to the Windows Update site. I'm not sure what else to try but need to have this thing working by lunchtime tomorrow. Below is the ComboFix log...if anyone can make sense of it I would GREATLY appreciate the help. These viruses and malware have become what consumes a good portion of my day anymore. Usually I just reimage the machine, but due to the nature of this PC and the timeframe that I have to work on it, I have to clean it up. Here's the ComboFix log....thanks in advance guys!! A:Can't get to Windows Updates site or MSE updates

I posted a problem yesterday and didn't get any responses yet. Normally this wouldn't be an issue but I'm working on a very time-sensitive laptop. I did some searching around on here and found a post by someone with an identical problem. One of the response team members (Gringo) posted some very detailed instructions for the original poster but they never posted back again so he closed the thread. So *I* followed his instructions, as listed here. At the end of his instructions, I have posted the logs that he requested of the other poster. Can one of you guys help me with this, please??? Thanks much! WarnerGringo's original reply to the other poster:Hello and Welcome to the forums! My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have an HP computer with windows 7 64 bit. My updates were turned off. Now it says I have 130 updates to install. How do I know what ones I should install.

A:windows updates was shut off now have 130 updates

What's the model name and complete model number of your HP computer?
What's the exact product number(P/N) on it?

--------------------------------------------------------------

The Service Pack 1(SP1) upgrade for Windows 7 64-bit was released in March 2011, and there have been about 200 updates released since then.
If yours is showing about 130 updates to be installed, you probably haven't installed any updates in about 3 years.

There are several updates that have been released since July 2015 that are associated with nagging you and trying to force Windows 10 on you.
KB2952664 and KB3035583 are the 2 worse offenders, so make sure to deselect and hide them.

Hi guys, so I got this new-to-me Acer Aspire 5315 laptop as a gift from a friend whose new laptop I just cleaned (still angry about lenovo's bloatware obsession). For the complete specs I included the full DxDiag.txt output.

So I freshly installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 on it, and for three days now whatever I do, Windows Update will just keep Checking for updates... forever.

The first time I ran Windows Update, it updated itself, then re-ran itself and then goes on looking for updates in outer space or something.
What I tried so far:
booting into safe mode and running the disk cleanup, checked everything
using the windows update full reset bat file, rebooted
installed the update readiness tool thing (I had to kill the windows update service for the muddathing to actually install because the installation was freezed on checking for system updates...
Tried grabbing the latest windows update agent from microsoft's website, same thing.
tried redoing my installation of windows to rule out any install problems
sfc /scannow reports nothing
I guess it's worth mentioning I'm dual booting with Linux Mint, which is working and updating perfectly fine. The thing is I need Office and Windows, as this laptop will be used for school.

A:Windows Updates keeps checking for updates

How long have you let it run? I've worked on maybe eight machines in the past few days, and every one of them took north of an hour to gather the data. But generally only on the first run. Win10 fallout, probably. You could try it on a Diagnostic Boot via msconfig.

Hello,
Last week I installed 3 new computer with Windows 7 SP1 x64. Everything seems okay until I let the computers search for updates. Windows keeps searching for updates and never returns with updates, it just keeps searching. This happened on 2 different HP
pc's and 1 Panasonic pc.
Hope someone could help me with this problem.
Thanks in advance.
