can't run malwarebytes.

Q: can't run malwarebytes.

I've been noticing strangeness with google search links the past day or so. Then tonight, pop-ups for "System Protection" scareware started appearing. Was unable to launch Malwarebytes to kill it.

Did some digging and found three bogus files in WINDOWS/system32 and renamed them which stopped the popups. But, still no joy running Malwarebytes, even using the renaming tricks mentioned elsewhere. And, browser is still being hijacked.

Much obliged for your help... maybe I'll learn something from this and be able to give back!

Hi!This is my first post and I really appreciate bleeping computer team for providing such a wonderful service to people in need. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate. I have Symantec Norton Antivirus 2011, Avast Free Antivirus and Comodo Firewall installed. I update my system (windows, antivirus, firewall, acrobat etc) regularly. Off late my system has been running slowly. The two antivirus catch infections every now and then (pendrives, malicious links). I run regular scans (both Norton and Avast), all of which almost never detect any infection and assure that my system is clean.Yesterday I installed Malwarebytes Anti Malware just to be sure that my computer doesn't have any infection. It was constantly (every 2-3 seconds) blocking outgoing connections from BitComet to different IPs located in China. Believing that the problem is in BitComet, I started utorrent, and the result was same for it as well, MBAM blocked outbound connections, albeit at a lower frequency. Then it blocked an inbound connection from svchost.exe. I just quit both the torrent clients and the notifications stopped. I then quit MBAB.I started Malwarebytes scan and while it was still running, it showed two infections. During the scan itself a blue screen came and my windows crashed. Ignoring it, after a while I again started the scan and the same thing happened. I am a long-time user of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.  Only today, I became acquainted with Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit which is a separate program from the standard, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program.  I purchased Anti-Exploit and it is now happily at work, protecting my computer right along with its big brother, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
So - what's the difference between the two programs?  I know that Anti-Exploit is constantly running in the background and, presumably, will sound off if something bad is trying to happen.  At least I think that's basically how it works.
But how is that any different from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?
What does one do that the other does not?

To put it simply (since I'm on my phone), Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is an Antimalware program which aims at protecting your system against known malware threats: adware, spyware, rootkits, etc. So your traditional Antimalware. All the threats detected by Malwarebytes are known threats. Which means that they exist in Malwarebytes database and have been documented by it. Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit is a mitigation program if I can call it like that. Its meant to prevent your programs (the ones supported by its free and paid versions) from being exploited by what we call Zero Day Exploits. Zero Days are in the wild exploits that haven't been patched yet and that can be used to like the name states, exploit a vulnerability in a program. Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit will therefore monitor the programs it supports and blocks any Zero-Day attempts if it detects a behavior associated with a known Zero Day method. Usually, Zero Days are meant to exploit a system in order to protect it, since they can be used to drop malware on a system. Malwarebytes Anti-Explpot protects these exploits from happening, while Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is used to protect your system against the malware that can be dropped by these exploits.
My explanation wasn't the best there is since I'm typing on my phone, but I hope you didn't understand it. Otherwise, I can go in a more in depth explanation.

Nope, it will work fine. MSE = Virus protection and Malwarebytes = Malware protection. In fact, it's recommended to have both and both can run live on your system.

What you don't want to do is have two antivirus programs, although, MSE is one of the most forgiving programs in regards to using it with other Antivirus programs (Still, not recommended).

Hi, on my computer for some reason when I try to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware it wont run. I tried reinstalling it, but it still wouldn't run. It wouldn't work for some reason at all. I saw it in taskmanager, then it stopped. This has not happened before on my computer.

Hi good folks. Today after 1 year I downloaded the latest version on Malwarebytes and did a scan. My system was clean. I have been using MSE and avast for the past year. Never had a virus or malware in that time to report. However, avast had blocked me from a few sites which I decided to concur with. Should of noted that my lappy is very heavily used on the internet.

There is a way to test if Malwarebytes is still operating correctly. You can do this with the tests.

These are test files that are not malware, they will not infect your machine.

Download the following file from Spycar: and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file HKLM_RunOnce.exe and Select "Scan with Malwarebyte's...".
Malware bytes should detect it after the scan.

BTW, I'm assuming you are using the free version of Malwarebytes, thus without realtime protection.

I am trying to get rid of Antivirus Soft, but I cannot download Malwarebytes correctly, I keep getting, after I download it, I keep getting "mbam.exe" unable to be found or that it cannot be installed. Help? Thanks.

XP Pro fully updated, SP3, Trend Micro OfficeScan.
2 weeks ago this had the fakeav that put up false Windows security warnings. The user (not me) didn't understand and installed the malware.
Trend gave some sort of warning but did not remove.
I have run superantispyware successfully to remove, and it gave the name above, 'fakeav'.
I did uncheck 'system restore' when I did that.
One thing I had not seen before was that it changed network settings to use a proxy server, which was the fakeav itself. After removal, machine could not access web, but could ping. Then I changed that setting back, to no proxy server, and could access web.

I cannot install or run malwarebytes. I download ok but on install near the end gives an error, runtime 0 and runtime 440, and it will not actually run.
I uninstalled, which also issued the same errors, and removed all files in the registry, and reinstalled from 2 different sites including malwarebytes itself.
No difference. Repeated google searches for this problem do not help; fixes others have found have not worked here.
User reports that Trend sometimes still issues a warning that 'something' is being blocked. I haven't seen it myself.
I think something is still on this machine and have had success with Malwarebytes in the past.

I dl'd and ran DDS. I got to the black screen, then it disappeared and I did not get the 2 output text windows.
I ran it again and did get the output, so I have those saved... Read more

Malwarebytes does work. But it isn't something that scans as you use your computer. Its only a scanner you can run periodically. Unless of course you purchase the paid version for like $20. But yes its a good application. You may get false and true information regarding it as alot of us have our own opinions.

Best way to actually protect your system is Using Golden's advice.

1. A good NAT router
2. Firewall
3. "Anti-virus" software
4. "Anti-malware" software

Is Malwarebytes an anti-virus or should I also run an AV with it? I have CA Internet Security (free from Cablevision HS Internet) and it takes a minute to load and slows everything down. I also run the paid version of MWB and just uninstalled CA because its recent upgrade slowed booting even more. All is fairly snappy now on my OpteronX2 2.4, XPMCE. BTW, MWB is outstanding in every way.

When i choose when to do an update and schudle scan it never lets me edit the time, it just stay at 2.12pm and i cant change it.

I just bought malwarebytes and have tried to download it from the email that was sent. I have tried IE9, firefox, and google chrome and the download will not finish. It starts downloading ok but then it just gets stuck and will not keep going. On chrome it always ends up as other words the download did not complete. So i have malwarebytes and still cannot get it to work. Please help. By the way i have noticed that my computer has been slowing down and if i try to see a video on youtube it always get stuck buffering.

Is malware the best anti-virus?I lol'd at that, sorry.Malware is malicious programs installed unwillingly on your PC. You don't want malware on it.-to your question. Malware bytes only offers a scanner for free. You will want and need a active(real time) anti virus software. Some good ones are AVG Free, and Avast. However, if your PC is really running Windows 9X, then you'll probably need to check around for what works best on it. Windows 9X is mostly forgotten about by now.

Nothing has been changed with the way Malwarebytes Free edition operates.  Detection and removal are free as always.

I have an Identical problem... I have no clue how to fix it either. Its progressively getting worse for me. I can only run in Safe Mode now, and no internet connection on the infected computer. I'm on one of my laptops now trying to figure this out. I have done everything you guys mentioned...much like peter porker, my attempt at malwarebytes install off my flashdrive resulted in a locked/stopped installation. I've tried Kaspersky's, Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, ClamwinPortable, and a few others. I can put the installation icon on the desktop of my machine, BUT, as soon as I double-click, (or use the keypad) to select the setup.exe, the installation is cancelled. The day after I noticed something was up, I was able to run Malwarebytes... Once i realized i needed the mbam-log.... its gone. I only have 2 logs left... Last august, and last october. Unless the logs are stored somewhere else?

Another thing I will mention... Back when i first realized something was up, I tried going into the task manager, and a popup message came up, saying "task manager has been disabled by the administrator"... I AM the admin... It Never did that before. And just a little while ago, I tried to install a spyware app, and it said "The administator has disabled that function"....

I installed Malwarebytes anti-malware sofware a while ago and it was running fine. About 3 weeks ago, that came to an end. When I started it, I got a message saying that Windows cannot find the path and that I may not have the appropriate permissions to access the file. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program on several occasions and when I first do so, the scan starts but closes after only a few seconds and then I cannot start it again without getting the message about the path and the permissions. I know there must be another virus preventing this and I have since manually removed Privacy Protection a couple times while in Safe Mode, but this has not helped. Please advise what to do next. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this thread but here goes:

I've noticed lately that my internet has been working realllly slow. I use FF and sometimes pages won't even load. I've also noticed that sometimes when I do a search in Google OR Yahoo, I'll sometimes click a link and it'll direct me to random junk sites.. I'll X out and click the link again and then it'll take me to the right page. I ran a virus scan.. and my computer was clean. I also ran a Malwarebytes scan and it pulled up two malicious items: Disabled.SecurityCenter. I removed the selected files.. but when I restart my computer it's the same thing. I run the scan again and it's those two same files that pop up. I'm not sure if my Malwarebytes scan results have anything to do with my internet running slow though. Any help??

 If you think Malwarebytes is somehow corrupted, you could try uninstalling/reinstalling it.  If it's not corrupted, you could try running it in Safe Mode.  It's easy to change the search engine, but the procedure differs between browsers.  In Firefox you click the little down pointing arrow where you do the search.  In IE11 hold down ALT and press T, then click Manage add-ons.  Click the Search Providers, and select the one you want.
  If you need more tools to use for checking, you can 
Download and run AdwCleaner from here: , then 
Download Junkware Removal Tool and run it.
Download TDSSKiller and run it.

Then run ESET from here: .
  Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the box to accept the EULA and click the START button. Then click the Enable detection of potentailly unwanted applications button and click Start. 
 Click YES to any popups you get.  This will download the virus signature database then scan your system.  That will take a good while to run - on my laptop it took about 2 hours, but you can do other things while it runs.
  When it finishes scanning, click List Threats. Then click Copy to clipboard and paste it into your next post here.

Hello,I was infected with the Internet Security virus, and I followed the removal guide from here: I performed the scan and clicked on "Removed Selected" to remove everything. When asked to reboot, I did, but now my computer is stuck on the Windows XP loading screen. What can I do to get it to continue rebooting so I can get rid of the rest of the malware? I just figured I'd let you guys know about this. I am also a member of the GFI forum because I'm in the process of migrating from eset NOD32 to Vipre antivirus. I saw a topic over there asking if the realtime protection mechanism of MBAM is compatible with Vipre antivirus and Antispyware, and Nick Hallin of their support team says no. Just a little pointer for those wondering. And so, all the hype about AVG not allowing it either is really not as much of a surprise as it seems. Most all AV's do that. They don't want any other realtime scanners but theirs. What I wonder though is, is he just saying that for speed purposes, or is it really an incompatibility? What do those here think? Thanks.

I recently started using Malwarebytes. I have used Macrium for a long time. With Macrium it seems the free version does the job. It lets you do most everything needed, while Malwarebytes does not let you schedule a scan with the free version which I consider a must for a software of that type. Do any of you use the pay Malwarebytes or do you just use the free one and do manual scans?

I haven't tried this yet, but I was going to use a scheduled task to periodically run a command line Mbam.

Looked on Mbam site for the options - not found there. I knew I saw them and was about to try mbam.exe /?
when i saw help in the malwarebytes folder. That's where the command line options are.

You'll probably do this before I do, I'll be interested in the results.

I presently have the free version of Malwarebyes installed and run a full scan about once a month. The reason I don't run it more often is that it takes about 2 hours for the full scan on just one of my hard drives. Double that if I have both hard drives connected.

My question is: I have access to Malwarebytes Pro and want to know if it will prevent malware from getting on my pc and if it will do a better job of finding and removing malware from my pc than the free version.

Just a few lines on the slow demise of the Malwarebytes General Help forum lately - Has anybody else noticed subtle alterations to the main areas of the forum - Marcin (Rubber Duckey) laid down a few fairly heavy rules in the last few weeks and was backed up by the On Line Manager (Ron Lewis) - If you were a regular reader or poster on the forum then you may have noted that most of the usual helpers are now no longer there and were replaced by newly employed staff helpers - Marcin implied he may have plans to add an Antivirus content (Sunbelt based ?) as well as a paid telephone assistance service ? I am confused as to which version of malwarebytes is free.
a few minutes back I downloaded it from this thread FREE Great Programs for Windows 7
which says its free, but after installing it i do not understand whether the version i have the free or do i have to purchase it ? thanks,


The linked version is the free version.

Below is a screenshot of my paid version. Notice it says "Pro" at the top.

The Pro version provides realtime protection rather than relying on periodic scans.

The Pro license is a lifetime license. If you fish around on the net you can find discount coupons for it that will reduce the price 20% or so. I think the retail cost of the license is 20 or 25 dollars.

You can configure it to automatically update the database.

I have the pro (registered) version of Malwarebytes installed, and it seems to be doing some odd things. First, I have been having some problems downloading videos with GetFLV of late, and while working with it last night, MBAM popped a window saying that it had blocked GetFLV from connecting with a particular IP address belonging to Hulu.

I exited MBAM from the system tray, and have left it off for the time being, yet moments ago, for no apparent reason, Windows signaled a disconnected device, and began searching for and loading drivers for my printer.

This has never happened before, so when I noticed the high CPU usage, I moused over Process Explorer, and the dominant process activity came from MBAM, which is curious, because it wasn't listed among the processes on the Task Manager.

I'm trying to figure out what is going on, but don't have a clue at the moment...does anyone else?

EDIT: I just checked in services to find that there is a malwarebytes service, which is started, but all of the buttons are grayed out, and regardless of whether I set it to auto, manual or disabled, it continues to run. It seems to have a mind of it's own.


Maybe it's just a quirk of mine but I never use an "on all the time, real time" shield, av program, etc.. I just find they interfere with the normal operation of the PC. I use malwarebytes for manual scans all the time. For protecting an app while it's running I use Sandboxie. But even then only on occasion. I rely more on multiple image backups.

There are free image backup programs out there. A couple of external USB drives or bare drives in USB docking stations are a good investment. At some point you have to let the machine work unless you're doing nothing but word processing and emails.

Hello, forum people. I had the same problem as the person on this thread: followed the directions from this page. In case you don't feel like clicking the link, I'll explain. I had this red-x on the bottom right corner of my PC, from which text would pop up every couple of minute warning me of a virus. It suggested that I install its program, Antivirus XP 2009 (or something like that). Then I started getting internet pages popping up. I am having the issue of XP 2010 attack on a desktop at my church. I know Malwarebytes is the answer and I have it installed and am able to do updates but when I go to run it, it will show up and then disappear. I know it is being blocked from running. I have tried safe mode, logged in as admin, renamed the mbam and extension, nothing helps. I tried Super Antispyware and all it found was cookies. I am at a loss. Short of rebuild I am out of answers. Please help me out.

Since MalwareBytes has made the Quick Scan a premium feature, it is no longer a tool of first choice for me for new infections. When I'm trying to help a family member or friend with a malware problem, I can't wait two to three hours for MalwareBytes to run. I realize they made it a premium feature to annoy us into paying, but that move has the opposite effect. Several people have upgraded on my recommendation, but now I'm searching for its successor. ADWcleaner is a great solution, but I don't know if it is a full replacement for a MalwareBytes Quick Scan.

I have used both and I find that the free version only lacked one nice feature and that is a flash scan feature which is amazingly fast. Otherwise the two are more similar then different. If you can find the full (pro) version on sale then I would suggest it otherwise just run the free version.

Just cleaned out a bunch of infections using malware on my dad's comp. It said it would delete a couple infection upon reboot and when I rebooted, I couldnt run malware any more. I cant copy and paste for some reasone but it says "fail to load vbalgrid. your vbalsgrid6.ocx may be outdated". What's this?? @[email protected]

I installed and ran the free version. It found about 11 Candy PUP stuff which it deleted. Nothing else. Good.

But, two things:

1. Just before running, Malwarebytes advised turning off my antivirus for the default 10 minutes offered by AVG Cloudcare. (I know. It came free for a year when my computer was built for me and that sevenforums describes it as rubbish and I will soon be choosing a better one.) Having told me earlier that it was compatible with AVG, Malwarebytes took about 10 minutes to complete before telling me to restart (to complete the removal of the PUPs). AVG Cloudcare re-activated itself. But 10 minutes without any antivirus running worried me. (AVG detected a MSIL Trojan Horse two days ago and neutered it.)

-- Is 10 minutes without any antivirus worrying? And what should I do next time?

2. AVG Cloudcare reported as in the attached image. I had installed Acronis, and uninstalled it about 6 weeks ago using its uninstall program. I know what a digital signature is (but not in detail). The file is Hidden. My system is 64 bit, not 32. I will never want Acronis.

--Should I simply delete the file?

My Mother In Law has a Dell XPS 430 Desktop, which she has had for about 2 years. She has had AVG on from the beginning and run regular scans. There has always been very few infections picked up by AVG. The computer has seemed like it is running good from day 1 until now. I recently installed Malwarebytes on the computer after hearing good reviews. The full scan to my surprise picked up 556 infections. The 3 major ones were Adware My Web Search, Rogue Drive Cleaner and Rogue Anti-Virus Protection. I proceeded to delete all of the infections. Are these quite harmful trojans? Why wouldn't the computer's performance started to deteriorated. Why wouldn't have AVG picked up any of the Infections that Malwarebytes detected. Appreciate the feedback.

What version of AVG does your mother in law run cap2587? It has been upgrade to version 8.5 and older versions are not supported. I hope the computer is running better for her now. Are all windows updates current? It is important to keep the updates current for security reasons. If windows is not secure AVG could miss things I suppose, but it is hard to say. So this afternoon I opened an email that said I was infected with so.ething and promptede to call this Microsoft Tech.
In doing so, Carol said I was infected with Trojans amd said I needed to pay to be protected amd cleaned up.
$150 for 2 computers to have Malwarebytes Pro and Syssentry.
Now, during this clean up and down load I lost connection so I called the number back. Edward insisted gaining control of my computer. In the meantime, I gained access and saw that Carol still had control. I explained to Edward she was still there and he said disconnect that she was a hacker trying to get my information.
I have no idea who to believe or what to think. All I know is I paid $150 to have this on 2 computers. I don't even know where to begin to find out if I am at risk or need to stop payment.

Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes right click the MBAM.exe and Run As Administrator. If that doesn't work, restart and press F8 continuously. In the Advanced Boot Menu choose Safe Mode with Networking. Run MBAM from here.

I came home today from work and my laptop was running the screen saver. This morning around 3:00am I put the computer into sleep mode and that is what I also did. Got up went to work, worked all day, came home around 5:00pm and noticed my screen saver was running. Opened laptop logged in and check windows updater, Defender had updated earlier in the day. So I opened Malwarebytes to see if it had been ran. Sure enough it had, and multiple times from 9:00am until 5:00pm. The scans that ran, were ran MANUALLY it says. Several times throughout the day. Have I been breached Physically/Remotely or is this normal? Please help.

Hi I might be  little late in the day offering help as you might already have resolved your issue. If not then:
Suggest you check malwarebytes settings and schedule to see if their are any extra scans set up instead of an update as it is possible, as far as i'm aware, unknowingly to set scans to run silently.
They could well be non-scheduled scans -Flas scans - perhaps. I f so, then it's possible that you have MBAM's scheduler configured to run a flash scan after updating.
Open the main MBAM program UI > click "settings" tab > "scheduler settings" and -- assuming you have updates scheduled -- open the the "updates" section (by highlighting it and clicking "edit") to see if that's the case.
It could also be that you have multiple entries in the scheduler for SCANS.
If you have already resolved your issue, or If none of the above resolves it then please let me know.

Hi all,,, anyone with mbam full version will be having strange problems at the moment if they are fully updated with the defonitions as there is i glitch in the latest version,,, it picks up a trojan in everything you do and alerts you,,, this is false and you are advised by the makers to stop realtime protection,,, right click the notifaction icon and select exit,,, they are working on a fix and will issue it as soon as,,, keep opening mbam and updating to see if its sorted,,, ie switch realtime back on,,, up to this post its not fixed,,,

When using malwarebytes on a computer with more than one user all administrators do I have to run mbam in every user account or will running in one clear all users.



MBAM is designed to remove malware with a Quick Scan that looks at the most prevalent places for active malware so scanning every single file on the drive isn't always necessary. Both do full heuristics, memory, load points and multiple other malware checks. However, MBAM stores each configuration in the current user's key so each user can configure it to operate differently. For comprehensive cleaning its best to do a Quick Scan on each user account so everyone's registry gets scanned for malware as well.

I just installed and ran this free anti malware program. It detected 90 problems that Adwcleaner didn't see.

Why did I run this program? I was tricked into letting "clickforsupport" remotely scan my computer to locate my forgotten wifi password. Clickforsupport is a scam, and wanted to charge me for locating my wifi password when in reality, the password was located on a label on the bottom of my modem.

Any opinions on this anti malware program?

You can only place the setup file on a USB stick for transfer and installation to the hard drive. There is no portable file from the vendor which you can use to unzip and run a scan from the usb stick.

I cant seem to remove certain malware traces everytime I run a quick scan of malwarebytes. However, no other malware program picks it up, and a full scan doesnt pick up the malware trace with Malwarebytes...

No, MalwareBytes is not a full blown anti virus app. Even with MalwareBytes you still need an anti virus app installed and resident.

How often should I setup MBAM PRO to scan and how often should I change my antivirus to scan? I scan using my antivirus every day since I am delusional that I might get a infection.

Side note: I finally will get to start using the software that I reccomend but don't use. Yippee!!

hey guys i have been reading alot on here but i may have over looked it..what i need to know is on the settings of maywarebytes it has a option that says to "enable self-protection module" and then another right under that,that says "enable self-protectionearly start"..i have no ideal if these 2 boxes should be enabled or disabled..thanks in advance


Both of those options should be enabled. The "enable self-protection module" is designed to detect and prevent an infection or hacker from altering the program, its folder(s) and so on. I'm wondering if I have some sort of Malware on my friends computer I'm working. He has Malwarebytes installed but it will not run. When you click on the MB icon nothing happens. No error messages or anything. I wish I can be more descriptive with the problem but that is all that's wrong. You must have installed a.v. for realtime protection,with windows firewall enable,unless you have internet security suite with a.v. and firewall combo.

Due to a shrinking wallet, I am switching from pay programs to free ones whenever possible. I went to the download site for Malwarebytes. There was a free program and a pay one. I downloaded the free one and it appears it is a Trial Program. I was under the impression Malwarebytes was a free program. Can someone verify this for me. Thanks,


It is free but unless you unchecked box which is checked on the download to try the trial that is what it activates,
The only option I see is to Uninstall and re-download and make sure you Uncheck use the trial version.

I recently downloaded Malwarebytes Anti Malware and did a scan , it came up with 107 threats . I have windows 7, 32 bit and i only got my pc back like a week ago . to my knowing i should not even have that much threats , but it's there , so my question is . what should i do with them ? i have no idea what they are or what to do with them . i'm scared to even turn off my pc .

My son recently fixed my pc after it had several viruses and put malware bytes on it. I keep getting this pop up message that malware bytes has stopped this "spyware clean" program from opening. Mod. edit. For additional information, please read this topic: ~ OBFor about a week and a half my puter has been real slow, and my browser has been redirecting me to various sites (opening a new tab in Firefox) It usually starts by opening a pop window to Antivirus 2009, I "x" out of that, but when I come back to my browser another tab is open, and running the antivirus 2009 scan. I have run Malwarebytes, and I find infected files and registry entries, malware cleans them, then I reboot, and the computer runs fine, til I turn it off...then when I get on later,..right back on they are. I am running XP Pro SP1. (Cant seem to dl any of the other sp's) On a side note I ran RSIT but only get the log? Not sure what thats about. I need to be very careful about certain wife does billing work for Hershey Med and she does some of this work from this computer. I had malwarebytes anti malware installed on my computer and it was working great at first. At some point I must've gotten a virus/malware on my computer because I almost always get redirected when clicking on links on the internet. Also, when I try to run Malwarebytes now it doesn't open. I never get any error messages about it or anything, I click to open it and i get the hour glass like its doing something and nothing ever happens. My computer doesn't freeze when I do this is just doesnt open anything. I uninstalled Malwarebytes and have reinstalled it since then only to have the same problem. Also, if I try to go to the page doesnt load. Firefox tells me that there is a page load error, much like you get if not connected to the internet. Can anyone help me or have any idea what is going on with this?

I used the posted procedures here to download Process Explorer Download (and re-named it as directed to iexplorer.exe) and found tsc.exe in the list and deleted it. I then downloaded Malwarebytes to my desktop and that worked fine. When I go to run it however it only runs for a couple of seconds and then says "Malwarebytes was stopped for some reason if we figure it out Windows will send you a message".

I also have Norton Internet protection on my computer and at about the same time as all the other problems started occurring if I try to run Norton it just looks like it is moving but never checks any files and never closes. I have to go to Task manager to get it to stop or get it off my screen.

I am running Vista Premium and now I use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Can anyone help?

A:Malwarebytes Will Not Run - Help?

If you cannot run MBAM or complete a scan in normal mode, then try performing a Quick Scan in "safe mode". Scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in safe or normal mode will work but removal functions are not as powerful in safe mode. MBAM is designed to be at full power when malware is running so safe mode is not necessary when using it. In fact, MBAM loses some effectiveness for detection & removal when used in safe mode because the program includes a special driver which does not work in safe mode. Further, scanning in safe mode prevents some types of malware from running so it may be missed during the detection process. Additionally, there are various types of malware infections which target the safeboot keyset so booting into safe mode is not always possible. For optimal removal, normal mode is recommended so it does not limit the abilities of MBAM but in some cases, there is no alternative but to do a safe mode scan. If that is the case, after completing a safe mode scan, reboot normally and try rescanning again.

My son allowed Windows Antivirus Pro to run on our pc, overriding Mcafee. I've spent the last few hours trying to get rid of it before I found you. Earlier (before getting rid of any of this prog's components) I was able to run a macafee scan, in the middle of this the pc shut down. I rebooted, after this some components of Windows Antivirus had gone (some remained such as the red around icons on desktop) but thereafter if I double click an icon it won't run and the 'select which programme to open this file' menu appears. Rundll32 is missing. So, this means that even if downloading Malwarebytes antimalware and trying to run it directly from the site it simply won't. I have it installed, and the .exe file is also on my machine but of course those meet the same problem. This also affects all other programmes. And obviously I can't system restore either. Any help would be truly appreciated. The source of the problem initially, Windows Antivirus Pro is mostly gone, it's the after effects I'm now trying to solve. Please help I'm being driven slightly mad

I had the police pro virus and the msa.exe one a while ago. I thought I got rid of them both, and I think I did but I'm trying to run Malwarebytes now to make sure, but it won't run. It will start a scan for about two seconds if I download and install it, but then just shuts down. It won't open after it's been installed. I've tried renaming it, but it keeps saying 'Access is denied'.

I get a similar message saying I don't have the permissions to run regedit from the start menu, but regedit.exe in the windows folder works fine.

I'm using XP SP3, I'm really not sure what to do, so any help would be awesome. Thanks!

My computer has been running slow and freezing up in firefox mainly but has also when I am not online. So I ran Malwarebytes and this is what came up.  Can someone help me with this? I do not know enough to delete all thats in the detailed report. When I see anything that says registry, I don't mess with it. I love malwarebytes, and for a while I have had only malwarebytes installed on my PC.
More and more people have recommended to also add a classic a AV, to work along with Malwarebytes.
Is this necessary? Why?

Hi PIERCE the 3rd It is not necessary to have an Antivirus running on a system. If you mean "necessary" in a way of "you have" or else Windows won't run, properly, then no. However, you should always have an Antivirus installed up and running since it's one of the most efficient way to protect your system. It's the first layer of defence against infection and the program that can protect your system the most (after you of course). It should had been the opposite too. You should had started using an Antivirus way before Malwarebytes, since Malwarebytes is an Antimalware and meant to complement an Antivirus program. quietman, one of BleepingComputer's MVP in Consumer Security wrote a fully detailled guide on the best security practices to follow in order to stay safe and secure on the Internet, and also when using a computer. I had a paid version of MBAM on my system (Windows XP 2002 SP3), and it seemed to work fine for the year or so that it was installed. However, recently my computer would suddenly slow down to a crawl - for example, it would suddenly take 2 minutes to open a folder when I double-clicked on it. This would happen at seemingly random times, when I wasn't doing anything except reading email via a remote shell account.
I investigated the running processes on my PC and discovered that MBAM was running at 100% of CPU time. I was not doing a scan, or using any other feature of MBAM, at the time. It did run as an ongoing background process to monitor potentially malicious sites trying to gain access, but that has never hogged the CPU.
This made me suspicious, so I uninstalled MBAM, and voila - the PC now runs at a normal speed!
Has this happened to anyone else? It is possible that shortly before this started to happen, I got a popup message alerting me to an update for MBAM, but I don't remember exactly when that was or even whether it was MBAM at all (I get alerts about upgrades for various software and I wasn't keeping track of which ones happened when).
Even though I uninstalled MBAM and the PC is now running normally, is it possible that malware is still active on my PC? I'm not seeing any abnormal behavior at the moment.
And I would like to reinstall a legitimate version of MBAM, but I'm not sure how to protect myself from accessing... Read more

This may be of little help, but the main problems of this type are involved with older, or smaller XP units only. It may pay to note that although similar to XP, Windows 2000 support was dropped a few years ago due to the fact that the newer technology is not correctly applied to earlier / smaller computers. I can best leave you with a current quote from Malwarebytes Forum, and a link to the forum area for you to post any MBAM specific problem -
I have been a member there for many years, and seen the need for changes as technology slowly upgraded (I had Windows 98 at the time), and the program has slowly moved from Win98 to Win2000 to XP and Vista. Now it is on to Windows 7 today with Windows 8 soon being covered -
What I think may be happening is that our database size has increased quite a bit and it is probably pushing some of these computers capabilities and thus making it obvious that there is an issue. Most of the newer Windows 7 or those running XP on high end computers may not be seeing this issue.
 Inside MBAM try unchecking the Web blocker and set don't load it on reboot. Then reboot and see if it can load at normal speed. Then after the computer has booted and things have calmed down (you can look at your Task Manager and watch CPU usage and as it goes back to low usage and stable you can go to the next step) Then right click on the MBAM tray icon and enable the Web... At one point it deleted my VLC Media Player.
I removed it and re-installed VLC.
I understand it is still Beta, but since I do not download/install any illegal applications I do not need it -and I rely on NIS for the last 10 years.

So I didn't update my MBAM for a week. Today I decided to update it and I got a message saying the definitions is missing or corrupt and asked if I would like to download a new copy. I said yes, and it seemed to update fine. It told me that the definitions version updated from a buncha 0s to the current one. My questions are:
1) Why did it tell me the definitions are missing/corrupt?
2) Since it seemed to update correctly, does that mean the program will work fine?

If you are not sure if your program is current or if it updated fully, please read This Topic from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware FAQ area, and do a Clean Reinstall of your version (paid version or free version).
Follow the Free Version directions if this is what you want.
You may lose some history of old scans, but that is nothing to worry about.
Often you may find this the easy way if you had not updated for a while.

This post is for information for Security team members dealing with
Malwarebytes' Antimalware ( known simply as mbam ) .

While an anti virus program will not scan the hidden files of the Restore
Files which are shadow copies, i found out from a Staff Member of
Mbam that mbam will scan these files and remove the threat. Now, it should
be noted that as this will make that restore pt useless, he has recommended
that after the files are cleaned up for users to delete all the old restore
points and as files are clean, at this time, make a new restore pt to be
used if needed.

" It is by using the Full Scan option, but honestly, actually removing infections
from System Restore points is pointless as it will generally break those restore points,
rendering them useless. If an infection resides in one or more of your restore points,
the best option once you're system is otherwise clean and running normally, to create a
fresh restore point and then delete all of the older restore points,
thus removing the older restore points that contained the infection(s). "

Members of this forum, suggest that you dont use restore points that have been affected, . MBAM and any antivirus can not guarantee that a virus has been removed. In many cases, its not that easy. Our head security person suggests in some cases a reformat is the only sure cure.

 today I was updating malwarebytes, I had to update twice in a row for some reason, anyway - when I finished the second update I clicked finish and I had the option to launch malwarebytes after finishing checked, but it never launched, but it was running, The malewarebytes icon was open in the bottom right hand of my screen, so it was like it launched in the system tray, but the menu never popped up on my screen, I was just wondering if this was normal? I have diagnosed OCD and little stuff like that bothers me, haha so, sorry for asking such a stupid question here are some screen shots that will better explain

While what you describe is not typical behavior, I can confirm it was happened on occasion when I have performed an update...the GUI did not open. In previous versions, there were cases when the systray icon did not display. As long as Malwarebytes (mbam.exe) is showing as running in task manager, you are protected.If not, one of the solutions generally suggested by the Help Desk to try first is to uninstall/reinstall as follows:How do I uninstall Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?How to fully Uninstall/Reinstall Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2xIf Malwarebytes is running normally there is no need to follow the above instructions. Yes...I recommend you do so.For comprehensive cleaning (disinfection), especially on computers with multiple active user accounts, its recommended to do a THREAT SCAN on each user account so everyone's registry gets scanned. Although Malwarebytes scans other user's folders, it is best to run a separate scan under each user profile to ensure detection and removal of any remnants/orphan registry entries which may have gone undetected during the initial scan. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware stores each configuration in the current user's key so each user can configure it to operate differently. This may have changed with v2.0 but I have not come across any updated information which indicates otherwise.Note: Most anti-virus and anti-malware scanners will scan all files on each drive you configure the program to scan if the program is run while logged in with an Administrator Account to include all user account files in the Documents and Settings folder, and User AppData folder. However, not all anti-malware scanners work the same way and some may not look at other account user's registry entries. If malicious files are removed during a scan, the infection can be disabled but orphan (leftover) registry entries related to the malware may remain and require separate scanning for each account in order to completely remove them.
