First of all my PC kept shutting down and restarting 2 days ago. Than yesterday I kept getting the message "Search Protocol Host stopped working." I ran both my spyware and anti-virus programs today in Safe Mode. I had 11 Trogan viruses that I found and quarantined. But now I can't open up my pc only in the Safe Mode. All I get is a dark blank screen in the regular mode.

What can I do!

Thanks Patricia

My indexing stopped. When I checked "Windows Search" service is in auto startup mode but it wasn't running.
When I tried to manually start, it gave me "Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified." message.

Please help. Without an ability to search my computer I am pretty much lost now.

A:Indexing doesn't work. Windows search service stopped

Can you clarify that please? Is Windows search enabled?

So the 29th of July i went ahead and installed the Windows 10 update. It installed correctly and ran smooth without any problems for a few hours. Suddenly i realized that my Start Menu button didn't open the start menu when i clicked it. Neither did the search button.

I didn't really think about it much and continued gaming with one of my friends. Later that night i tried to restart my pc to see if that fixed any of my issues. Unfortunately nothing was fixed.

Now i can't open any microsoft apps (other than the Health and training app through the Task Manager and then the apps tab). Theres no way to access the settings or Windows Update so im stuck with just using non-microsoft apps if i can find them that is under my HDD.

(Edit) I can't rightclick anything in the taskbar or manage my internet connection.

Any help to fix this is highly appriciated.

Methods i have tried found around the internet:

Using the
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} command in Windows PowerShell as admin.

Running this troubleshooter from this link

Neither of them fixed anything.

Similar problem only I could not get Windows installed apps to open properly. I have a Lenovo G560 with a Dynadock plugged into a USB port and two additional monitors connected to the laptop (one directly and one through the Dynadock. In anticipation of installing Win 10, I upgrade my RAM and replaced my hdd with an SSD drive. I am upgrading from Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium. I did the upgrade and not a clean install. The upgrade seemed to go just fine. The first thing I noticed was and Notices icon so I clicked on it and some notices appeared. I tried to click on those but as soon as I moved the mouse off of the notices icon the list disappeared. The same thing happened when I went to Start. I rebooted the computer and the above problems went away. So I began exploring around the Start Menu. I got cortana to recognize Hey Cortana and she even told me a joke. When I asked her to play Rock Paper Scissors, she started having problems. Again I rebooted, and she could tell a joke but no RPS. Then I asked her to open MS Edge but that did not work. Tried myself by clicking on the E icon and I got an error message saying it could not find Internet Explorer.exe. Went to Start Menu and tried to start Edge. It looked like it was going to but nothing appeared. I went to Task Manager and there it was running so I ended the process and tried again. No joy. Again reboot. First thing was to open Edge from Start Menu. That worked-- it opened. Tried to go to settings in the Start Me... Read more

I recently got a new laptop and I've been having a lot of trouble with the sound. It is the laptop seen here:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218090329155

Sometime the audio works, but then if I pause a song and attempt to resume it a few minutes later, errors occur and the audio seems to be disabled.

"Windows Audio has stopped working" flashes quickly, followed by:

"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed
A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

Then, if I right click on the small volume icon in the bottom right by the time, go to "Playback Devices" I get the following message:

"This computer cannot play audio because the Windows Audio Service is not enabled.

Would you like to enable the Windows Audio Service?"

I click yes and the audio works again, but even after this it still acts funny.

Things of note:Sometimes the Volume Up/Down/Off buttons on my keyboard work, and sometimes they do not.
After this problem occurs and I restart it by going to Playback Devices, the audio cannot be turned up/down in Windows Media Player. I must manually adjust my (external) speakers.
I'm using Windows Media Player because Songbird and iTunes seem to freeze up every time I try to play music through them
When I first got my laptop, I installed a few programs and ran into some problems (I forgot exactly what they w... Read more

Recently I have been getting the error message "Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host has stopped working" popping up every 10 seconds when Vista is building its search index. After indexing is complete, the messages disappear.

In the event viewer, the corresponding application errors show up:

Faulting application SearchProtocolHost.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549b668, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bd80, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00045208, process id 0x16ec, application start time 0x01c7ce62a8eaadd8.

I have tried system restore, but none of my restore points worked, so it looks like I am going to have to try and track down the problem.

I have tried rebuilding the windows search index, and deleting/rebuilding the actual index file, but that didn't help.

I have done a lot of googling for an answer, and the only solutions I have found applied to people who has Outlook 2007 installed, which I do not.

Any suggestions?

I appear to have multiple issues on my daughter's laptop running Vista Home premium SP1. This started when she got some sort of hijack virus that prevented her from even getting to the Windows screen. I restored her PC to a previous known good configuration and she was able to go back into Windows. I installed Symantec Endpoint protection since her Norton 360 subscription had expired. She now cannot connect to any internet sites through either IE8 or Google Chrome. I restored again to the pre-Symantec config and the internet issue still exists. I have scoured forums left and right, found multiple suggestions, none of which work. In trying to see if other applications could connect, I started Outlook 2007 and am now getting "Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host has stopped working" popups every 10 seconds. Windows firewall shows as on but has a message that all inbound connections that do not have an exception are blocked.

To see if this was a network connection problem, I ran IPCONFIG /ALL and can see a valid IP address. I then pinged the address as well as this site's address and Yahoo.com and got valid responses. I started looking at Services but am probably in over my head and wanted to try and get help before proceeding further. Normally at this point I do a complete system restore but my daughter has so many photos, music files, school files, etc that I'd rather avoid that if there is a simpler solution.

Bump. I disabled the Windows search service but still have the unable to connect to the internet problem. I ran SFC /SCANNOW and there were several corrupt files that it could not repair. I am currently running CHKDSK and it is taking a long time (but still progressing). If I had to guess, there are corrupt files some of which are preventing connection with the internet. They may or may not have been caused by the virus I had to remove. Since the virus was showing itself on bootup and not allowing me into Windows, I had to disconnect the battery to reboot. Maybe that corrupts files?

I've updated Windows 8 to 8.1 recently and for some reason settings search on start up page stopped working. If I search with "Everywhere"
selected I see results but settings entries are missing. I have another account on the same machine and there everything works fine. When I try to find some of the setting shortcuts on file system windows file search takes me to "C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\Settings".
Both users are members of administrators group.
I've tried running "sfc /scannow" but there was no result.
I've noticed a strange error in event viewer but I don't know if it is related:

Hi,
You can try to use Search and Indexing troubleshooter to see if it can identify the problem.
Control Panel->Action Center->Troubleshooting->View all->Search and Indexing.
Also you can use Dism command  to repair system file.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Click the link below for more details about the command:

I recently upgraded my 3 computers to Windows 8.1. Only 1 PC (INTEL) is working as it should. The other 2 PC's are AMD based and the search function is acting funny. When I search it gives my the results, but when I click on says I'm looking for DEVICES AND PRINTERS and I search "printers", it gives my the result. If I click on DEVICES AND PRINTERS tab it doesn't respond, but when I click on say my Canon printer's link to MY PRINTER it responds. I ran SFC/SCANNOW and also DISM (Micorsoft actually ran it) and nothing changed. It sometimes locks me onto the Meto screen and I have to reset the PC to get back to my normal Desktop. When it does that non of the Metro tiles works. Micorsoft technician also tried to create a new user account which comes out blank and when creating another account, as soon as you log into the account it immediately signs out of it and don't allow you access. I tried to refresh the pc, but the frustrating part is, it asks you to choose a keyboard layout, but disables all USB and PS ports. Now how do I choose a keyboard layout, unless I have a touch screen. Microsoft really didn't think this trough. Is there anybody that perhaps now how to get the searh to work. Oh I do have searchindex.exe in my system32 folder and in services I stop and restarted Windows Search, but still no change.

A:Search function in Windows 8.1 doesn't work as it should

Problem solved. After Microsoft technicians tried everything and my PC crashed I decided to just redo. Then I found out that a program called Wisecare 365 that I was running on my Windows 8 PC caused all the problems. It went and deleted registry and other files that windows 8.1 need to operate with. So it's no longer on my PC and so far Windows 8.1 is running fine.

I have about 600 gigs of storage space and windows search doesn’t work so I’m a bit frustrated at this problem.

When I run windows search function I get 2-3 recently created files and nothing else. The process of getting these results take less than a second sometimes and it doesn’t comb threw my folder structure the way it used to. I have indexing on and I’ve had indexing off but this does not effect the results. I’m not sure when this problem first popped up but I assume it was about 4-5 months ago when my step dad changed my network settings because of some bad advice from some tech support who didn’t know what kind of system I had.

I’ve tried using “Windows Desktop Search” and that didn’t work either so I uninstalled that. I don’t want to use 3rd party search programs just because the windows search has worked fine for me so far with the exception to this. Any help is appreciated

Thanks.

This is probably something that has a really simple fix, but I have no idea why it's happening. When i type cmd.exe into the Windows search bar and open it, everything I type in (like ipconfig) doesn't work, and it gives me the message "'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." It should also be noted that the command line that I'm typing into says: C:\Users\Grant>

On the other hand, if I search cmd.exe, right click on it, click on Open file location and then double click cmd.exe in the System32 folder, it will open and if I type in things like ipconfig it will work just fine. The command line this time says: C:\Windows\System32>

Why is it that I can't just open it up the short way and do it?

I realise this subject has just about been done to death, e.g. by Lithium on 07-06-2011, but I just have to let off steam somehow - it really doesn't seem to work! Let me explain.

I recently acquired an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop computer, with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium pre-installed. While I was excitedly making my first investigations of Windows 7, I created another partition, labelled A:, and moved all my documents to it from C:, using the Location tab of My Documents Properties. I do this in order to have data in a different partition from the system files, in case the OS partition gets trashed for any reason.

Eventually, I needed to find a file which I knew existed amongst a certain group of folders. I was astonished when Search failed to find it, and I eventually had to track it down by hand. Since then I have established that Search will not find any files on my A: partition, no matter what folders I specify in the Included Locations on the Indexing Options dialog box. Indeed, if I select Advanced, to go to where I can force a Rebuild of the index, when I come out again Indexing Options will remove any additions I made to the search locations, and reinstate the original (not very useful now) defaults of Start Menu and Users. Even if I do a search from Windows Explorer while sitting in a folder on A: just above where I know a specific file is, Search will fail to find that file.

I have looked through stacks of forums and other help sources givi... Read more

The search in Windows explorer has been working inconsistently in my mother's computer for as long as I remember. There are several folders where no results are displayed whatsoever, no matter what you search for.
Solutions I've tried so far:
Using the Windows built in Troubleshooter for Searches and Indexing. It doesn?t find any problem.
Used the online troubleshooter: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...trypointid=RNP. Turns out it?s just the same that comes installed with Windows, so same result.
Control Panel > System & Maintenance > Indexing Options > Advanced Options > Rebuild index. It takes a few hours. No luck.
Followed all the steps in How to Fix Windows 7 Search Indexing Issues - Guiding Tech
Checked sevenforums.com. Another guy had a similar problem in Explorer Search Index Not Working/ Files are not coming up. They didn?t find a solution.
None of these have helped so far. Any ideas?

Hi everyone, I've had this problem for the better part of a month now, I was hoping the update from 8 to 8.1 would fix it but no luck.In a nutshell: Windows search for Files stopped working out of nowhere, searching for Apps/Settings works fine, but searching for Files yield no results, not only that, when I enter a file to search for it just sits there without any info on whether it is searching or not (Just says "Files" and nothing more where it usually would also say "Searching...").
I've been troubleshooting this but no one has had this exact problem, here are the solutions I've tried:
- Going to Indexing Options and manually adding the drives I wish to index to "Index these locations" and allowing for a full index. No results, no "Searching" phrase comes up either.
- Using Microsofts Windows Search Troubleshooter which essentially is supposed to fix problems like database corruption and crashes. Part of the fix is it resets the index (so my drives I added aren't in the list anymore), and it says it has Fixed the issues, but upon trying search: I do get the "searching" phrase, but I get very slow (about 25 seconds) and half-assed results (and only when I hit enter or click the magnifying glass icon), it's no longer a list of files in the search pane that starts to list file suggestions in the search pane. It also doesn't find folders.
Finally what I discovered today was in the Windows Features dialog box there is no Win... Read more

The feature-name option is not recognized in this context.

I was afraid of something like that happening.  So, assuming that the syntax in W8 is the same as in W7--(I'm still on W7.)--there would be an alternate syntax

/Enable-Feature /FeatureName:<name_in_image> [/PackageName:<name_in_image>]
Enables a specified feature. If the package name is not specified, the
Windows Foundation package is assumed. Feature names are case-sensitive.
The question is: which package name do we use?  All of them?  Both with the Language and without?   The unspecified component, the base and the shell ones, all 6?
This is an example of what I am disappointed about with the  /get-featureinfo  and  get-packageinfo  commands.   They give us no clues about how the pieces all go together.
E.g., let's guess that the PackageName which told Get-Features that the State was disabled would be one of your *.mum file that we found for the loop and replace the target command in the loop with:
dism.exe  /online  /Enable-Feature  /FeatureName:SearchEngine-Client-Package
  /PackageName:%m

Good luck

Going to START/Search button then adding parameters to close up search such as choosing "Case Sensitive" DOES NOT WORK. When I pressed Go for the search, all kinds of files popped up in the search such as Realization.doc,
Capitalization.xls, anything that had the letters liz in it when I had typed in the "File and Folder" box Liz (Capital L lowercase iz) and then a space after the z. I have files named Liz(space) ....this and Liz(space)..... that, and that's what I was searching for. But files still appeared that had lowercase liz in the middle of a word like Capitalization. So what's the point of having a Case Sensitive box to check, when it doesn't work! Am I doing something wrong here?

When I open Windows Explorer (Windows 8.1) the search box on upper-right corner doesn't work in the Google drive folder. It works on all other folders. That is: when I enter the name of a file inside this folder, the search returns "0 items" (usually, just typing the first characters of a file starts churning out results).
I've tried rebuilding the index and making sure that folder isn't excluded in the indexing, to no avail.

A:Windows explorer Search doesn't work for Google drive folder

I believe that is due to the Google Drive being non-local, ie: not on the PC, but on in the Google cloud.

This is my wife's computer, and when asked to help it run faster, I cleaned up the programs and tried to update windows but can't. Internet Explorer doesn't work either, it just loads the error screen. Firefox does work. I don't have any idea what to do next. Thanks. If it helps, I am more tech oriented than an average user. I have also worked with bleepingcomputer before and the previous rep made a great impression with how helpful he was.

I've got a nasty infection here but I don't know what kind of infection. Doesn't show it's face too often, maybe once every hour, sometimes more, and opens me a new tab in Firefox (I've read from other people that they've had pop-ups, but that could be because I won't allow Firefox to open more then one screen). The ads are from two companies: one called Calivary (selling ringtones I guess) and one called VergelijkenKoop.nl (Dutch for 'compare and buy'). I don't think they have much to do with the virus and it's just an affiliate program but maybe it helps. Found out about the infection because of the ads of course but I also failed to start ConnectifyMe which I use to create wireless internet in my home. Doesn't run all the time, only when I really want to use it. I also can't use System Restore and RootRepeal. RootRepeal gives me errors like crazy about a missing IODevice, the crash reports thinks I'm running Vista, while I'm running Windows 7.... Last thing I noticed was an e-mail from my girlfriend (who uses the same computer, different account) sent from her Windows Live account. The message said something about a shop called Reoorder.com.Software I tried to use but failed:Panda Internet Security 2010 (Anti-virus and vulnerabilities enabled but since this problems I've enabled Firewall and Identity... as well)MalwareBytesAdAwareHijackThisAnd some more I guess....The DDS log:[codebox]DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - N... Hello

Since SP2 was installed on my host computer, I have been experiencing problems with my internet connection. It works fine and I can browse websites on it for several minutes and then suddenly, any address that is typed in immediately brings up the 'this page cannot be displayed' or 'Internet explorer cannot open the search page'. In Firefox, I just get an 'Untitled' page. However, the internet is fine on a client computer, which connects to the internet through the host. Everything seems to work perfectly on it. On the host, MSN Messenger appears to work if I sign in before the connection 'fails'. Both are running on XP Pro SP2, which was only just recently installed (i.e. everything worked fine before SP2). I have tried resetting winsock and I have run through the Internet Connection Sharing troubleshooter, as well as many other microsoft.com articles. Can anyone help? Would the problem lie with SP2?

A:The same internet connection doesn't work on host computer but works on clients

I'd be more inclined to look for spyware/malware on the computer in question. I can't imagine why it would run for a short time before failing if it was SP2 related.

Hi!

My Windows 8 laptop is slow, and freezes a lot. Also, sometimes the mouse stops working - it can move around, but clicking doesn't work (in my mouse or with my touchpad), and I have to restart to fix that.

This is a work computer that I inherited from the person before me, so it's possible that there are viruses/who knows what on it. I ran a Windows Defender scan, and it came up clean.

Here's my dds and attach. Thanks!!!

I cannot get Windows Media Encoder 9 to work at all at home, but I have no problems with it at work, so I know I'm not trying to do something with it that it can't handle.

At home, every time I try to convert either an AVI or a VOB to WMV, either using the wizard or the custom settings, it lets me get through it all and then, when it starts trying to encode, it throws up the message:
"Windows Media Encoder has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. ..."

It never gives me any more information than this, just crashes and closes. I've tried repairing it through the control panel, as well as completely uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but it hasn't helped.

At home I'm running Windows XP Media Center. At work, where I've never had it crash, I'm running Windows XP Professional. Is there something in Media Center that causes it to crash? Is there any patch I can download or thing I can do to get it to work on my home computer?

Thanks for your help.

A:Windows Media Encoder doesn't work at home, does at work

I'm currently having the same problem . I open the .vob file set the output folder , settings etc etc . just as it was about to start converting , WME just stops and crashes . I use windows xp home edition so if your company's xp professional can make it work im thinking it is something in the professional edition which allows it to work not something in our edition that doesnt allow it to work. Are there any alternatives for encoding a video? i dont have much cash right now so i was hoping i might find some freeware alternatives . thanks

I installed a desktop publishing program on both my Vista Desktop and my Win 7 laptop.

When I went to open the Help File I had to go to the Microsoft site for the WinHlp32.exe download. This was because I received an error message re a problem running the macro (1037) This a known problem.

I let MS "Fix" it on the Vista machine and it worked like a charm. But when I tried it TWICE on the Win7 laptop it wouldn't work. So per their documentation I attempted to fix it myself. That didn't work either.

Tried to contact their support link provided and that was useless.

Any idea why I can't get results I need?

Thanks.

Hi everyone, I have a problem with Firefox.

I can't connect to a single page on firefox ever since I updated to the new version. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with one of my older versions of firefox but I still can't connect to the internet through it.

I'm using IE7 right now.

Uhh my firewall is Kaspersky's internet suite, I checked and Firefox isn't blocked. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make Firefox work again?

Hi gmangokevin,If you can't get any website to load immediately after updating your browser, it is almost certainly your firewall blocking the connection. Please have a look at Error loading websites.

Now IE7 wont even connect. But firefox has no problem. To my knowledge, the setup of the computer did not install a firewall, so that shouldn't be the problem.

I have tried to solve this problem since I first got Win 7 without success. Search simply does not work. Answers on-line say click on start and type in the search box, but when I do, I get nothing. Same thing with Explorer. Typing in the search box yields nothing. None of the on-line answers I have seen address this problem. My windows is up to date.

Just an idea: If you are going to install the new XP Home Service Pack 3 anyway that might solve your problem. It will install if you go to Microsoft Update - the ordinary Update page. It would have arrived to your pc by itself one of these days.

In Windows 7 Pro, if I click on Start and try to type in the search box, the letters take a long time to appear and the search does not work. For example, if I were to type regedit, it would take a few seconds for the type to appear and regedit would not open up. If I'm in Windows explorer, the same thing happens in the search box. They type appears very slowly on the screen and the search is useless. I've ran malwarebytes, Windows Security Essentials, had AVG on the machine and ran it. They don't find anything. Would appreciate help on this. I've done searches for the problem at Microsoft.com and on here but haven't yet found that specific problem. Thanks.

Updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 two weeks ago.
Had problems with Firefox.  Tried to download to replace existing Firefox.  CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up.  Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
-  Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry.  If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.

SO there are a few issues that I need help with.

A:windows 10 problems - start menu doesn't appear, windows key doesn't work, etc

Hello,
Well the first thing you should try is to Run System Restore to before all of these problems started or to when you first installed Windows 10.
Then try to download Firefox from there website
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Third thing is I would recommend to get rid of Avast it is low end and could be allowing virus I recommend ether McAfee or Norton Security.

Those are some things to think about
but it is all up to you when making your final decision

Restarted Firefox today and it upgraded. Now it won't connect to any site. I'm on IE right now, so it's not my internet connection that's the problem. :(

A:Updated Firefox, now it doesn't work.

Check your firewall settings. Sometimes when a program is upgraded or reinstalled you need to reset its internet access permissions.

Also, this is unlikely but worth checking, see if there's a tick beside File > Work Offline. As it's so close to File > Exit, it might have been accidentally clicked, whch would stop all internet connections.

Hey everyone,

I am currently having a problem with Facebook and Firefox. I have the most up to date version of Firefox which is 5.0 I think and whenever I try and get onto Facebook I either get one of 3 things happen.

1) I can get onto Facebook for a few pages and then it will stop working and I will get one of the following errors.
2) I will get a 501 internal error report pop up.
3) I will get the "Content Encoding Error"

I can sometimes sort the problem for a very short time by clearing all the internet history and cache and then restarting Firefox but the problem usually comes back.

I uninstalled firebox and left the "Keep personal settings and information" ticked so I didn't loose my bookmarks but the problem persists.

I am able to use Firefox in Internet Explorer but I really really dislike that browser and would like to get my fave browser working again.

Any information or pointers would be great.

Thanking in advance, Jack-O-Bytes

A:Facebook doesn't work in firefox any more

Yeah, I've noticed that about Firefox 5. They only advice I can give at this time is downgrade back to Firefox 4 or Firefox 3 until everybody else catches up with where Mozilla wants them to be.

Hi,

This is very relevant and important so please read entirely.

I found this thread because I am having similar problems only I don't have AVG. I use the ZoneAlarm security suite and it has no problem updating.

Around May 8th I noticed that a special social networking program I have stopped working. I then noticed I couldn't click links in Yahoo using Firefox and that is how I found this thread. I tried to run regedit and sure enough it wouldn't launch.

I ran zone alarm (kapersky), Adaware, Spy Bot S&D, Online symantec, Panda, Housecall. Everything said my machine is clean. I know a brilliant computer guy that thought perhaps my registry was corrupted so he took my machine. Here is what he found when trying to run scripts to check for registry errors:

1) When trying to launch regedit explorer.exe restarts itself.
2) He disabled the ability of explorer.exe to restart itself, then tried running the scripts. The program would just hang.
3) To confirm that a human had written malicious code he copied regedit, renamed it, and put it in a different folder. With this done regedit could be launched under the new name.

This confirms that there is malicious code (rootkit) controlling the launching of regedit. None of the computer guys tools could find the code or traces thereof. I did have an unrecognizable virus about 3 weeks ago, and he found a running system32.dll running in the TEMP folder and removed it. The machine was fine until this recent prob... Read more

For awhile now Firefox will work but will quit working after five minutes. I will have to close any windows I have and start over. To top it off Firefox takes a minute to load up initially, maybe longer. I'll start it up then walk off and go do something else so I don't sit there and wait for it to load. iTunes, Winamp, and a couple other programs do the same exact thing. Using Windows XP

microsoft sent messages claiming that some problems I had were caused by Word 97. I was happy with the performance of Word 97, but upgraded as they recommended. Now that I have installed Word 2007 search doesn't work when I search for documents created by the old program.

I have also encountered other problems in accessing and saving programs.
Is there something I need to do to get everything back in synch. I can usually get the job done, but it just takes extra steps and is frustrating.

Search in Explore is very important to me as I have a lot of word and excel documents and cannot always remember the file names.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

example typing in winver= nothing found. Even typing in just a letter= nothing found

However, when I log in as different user it works fine, so I assume there must be a folder that needs to be deleted or such. I spent an hour searching internet for answer, but nothing seemed to work so far. Reset indexing, etc.

Any one please help me, I mainly use everything search engine, but this is great for all windows items.

If you have taken anything out of startups via msconfig please go to Start – Run – type in msconfig – click OK and click on the Startup tab. Put a check mark beside everything you see listed there and then please do the following:

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Have you checked to see if the search function works in SafeMode?

Have you installed any updates to the current software like your AV program for instance?

Anyway, the first thing I'd try would be to run SFC from a command prompt within Windows XP and see what happens

sfc /scannow

BTW, in reference to the services, I doubt that's an issue. Windows XP will start a service if it's needed, regardless of whether you've disabled it.

Hello Bill

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder.
Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install.
You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder.

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders.
Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View
Check ?Show hidden Files?
Uncheck ?Hide protected system files?
Apply

You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

A friend at work experienced the same problem on his PC. Turns out he had a corrupt indexing file. You could try posting the details from Event Viewer, if that is possible. I wouldn't be able to help you interpreting them, but maybe some of the more experienced members could.

Have you tried disabling Windows Search? I did this on my friend's PC as a temporary measure . Got IE working, although searches were rather slow. It isn't a solution, but it could afford you a temporary -- albeit inconvenient -- workaround.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Stick around, though, and wait for inputs from the more knowledgeable members.

Hi, I'm having an issue with Microsoft Edge Flash not working, specifically on Pandora. I want to like it so much, it's close but it's missing some key features and various annoyances.

Anyways, Adobe Flash works just fine with Microsoft edge.

I have tried the solution to "Reset_Microsoft_Edge" via Windows PowerShell Command, which didn't solve the issue. (Also reset Internet Explorer's settings)

And Yes, before you ask, it's turned on in the settings.

What's very odd is that Pandora doesn't even use flash on other browsers, but it uses HTML 5.

YouTube Loads HTML 5 Videos in Microsoft Edge too, so I'm not sure what the problem is....

To be honest, it's a minor annoyance, Surely I can just use another browser, but that's bedside's the point. It's not working as it should, and I just want it fixed.

I've been fighting with Microsoft update web site for about a week and a half now. All of the sudden when I go there to get updates, all I get is the option to click on Express or Custom. Then when it gets to the page where ya see the green balls moving across the page while its scanning my system to see if I need any updates, it just stays there and if I stay at that page too long, my PC locks up.

I'm running XP Pro with 500MHz and 256 in ram. I've tried to contact Microsoft tech guys that I can barley understand and they have no idea what's going on. It doesn't make any difference if its a fresh install of XP Pro with nothing else installed except for my wireless card so I can connect to the net, or the current system I'm running now.

I was just wondering if anybody else has had this problem. I really don't expect any answers here because the guys who I could barley understand from Microsoft and have spent about 3.5 hrs with, had me renaming files and shutting this and shutting that off and on and nothing has worked.

They have told me that I'm the only person who has called with this kind of problem which I think is a bold face lie!

I welcome any comments or suggestions. Excuse me if I don't answer to this post right away because I'm trying every trick I know to try and get the updates my PC needs.

I'm having a problem with a laptop (DELL Vostro 1510 - Windows 7 Professional 32bit)
The computer was infected by a Rogue like a year ago, I took it to a computer repair shop, and fixed it.
Few months later I started having issues with IE, works fine for an hour or two, and then (The program stopped responding)... until it was doing it all the time.

Took it back to the computer repair shop, and did a clean up, and uninstalled IE, and reinstalled it.
It was working fine for two weeks... and then it started to do it again.
I use IE for a few hours, or minutes (Random) and then IE Stopped responding!

I downloaded SF Diagnostic Tool
But after I run it (From desktop) as an administrator, and click on GRAB ALL, I have that error message:
(I disabled Norton antivirus) so I can't even post the log...
Can you please help me find out about that issue? or what do I have to do from now?

I have Firefox 3.0 and Quick time doesn't work, I've downloaded the latest quick time version. I've tried every thing & it still doesn't work. It does work on Internet Explorer. Thanks, s.f.
