Q: Have active internet connection, browsers don't work

I originally posted this over here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/305551/have-active-internet-connection-browsers-dont-work/Here's what I said over there:----------------One of our computers got hit with a trojan that disabled Norton and Malwarebytes and all browsing except to the pages that tried to get you to buy whatever program was supposed to "fix" the problem. We managed to get rid of the pop-ups warning of impending doom (by deleting the most recent files deposited on the machine) and got Norton and Malwarebytes running again. Malwarebytes found nothing, nor did Norton, but it did clean up the registry. Everything seems fine now, except neither browser -- IE or Chrome -- can get anywhere. The internet connection is active. I can successfully ping sites from the command prompt, packets are going out and coming in, and the 2nd computer -- which connects through the same router -- can get to the internet just fine (that's the computer I'm using).I'm to the point where I think all we can do is reformat, but he has soooo much stuff on his computer that it's going to be a major time investment to back up the files and reinstall all the software. I thought I'd come here first and see if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks in advance. -------------------Following instructions given over there, I've read the "getting started" guide and am posting the requested files. A: Have active internet connection, browsers don't work

Hi phyllisp160,Welcome to Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem. Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. Please let me know in your next reply if you agree with this. You may download ComboFix and transfer it to the internet computer. In case it didn't run rename it to kat.exe and run it.Go to Start => Control Panel => Internet Options => click on the Connections tab, then click on LAN Settings. The following items should be unchecked:Automatically detect settings Use a proxy server for your LANCheck if IE connects and tell me about it but proceed with the next step anyway.Download ComboFix from one of these locations:Link 1Link 2Link 3* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your DesktopDisable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. You will get a warning about the not trusted download sites for ComboFix, click Yes.As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hello guys!

I have a problem with an install of Vista Home. I purchased my computer last year and was part of the delayed Vista roll out - so when it finally arrived, I was running a dual booting XP/Vista set up with no problems.

Then recently my XP was mauled and so I went for a complete format and installation of Vista only, which went smoothly for the first few days.

It has been randomly updating itself through the Microsoft site but the last couple of days I've had problems with my internet connection.

I am with BT (sadly no choice in my village) and have a Homehub connected with an RJ45 into a Realtek network card.

When I turn on Vista, I get the network icon with the yellow exclamation mark. Clicking on it reveals I am connected to an unidentified network, with limited connectivity.

I then "identify the problem" and choose the option "automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter" which I choose. Before picking this, my ipconfig reads as follows:

Connection Specific DNS Suffix :
AutoConfig IPv4 Address : 169.254.35.95
Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway :

Once I have clicked the "automatically get settings" option, Vista repairs something, then says that it did not fix the problem, but that resetting the network adapter might do something. The output in IPCONFIG hasn't changed at this point.

So I reset my adapter and magically it works and suddenly I can access websites and my ipconfig has cha... Read more

A:[SOLVED] Browsers won't connect to active internet connection

Hi. . .

Great detailed write-up.

I would suggest that you look in the Event Viewer if you have not already done so. There are 54+ logs there - start w/ Custom view/admin & see what is happening during connectivity to Internet then when you lose it.

Also have you un-installed the Network devices via Device manager? If not, do so - remove them all then re-boot. Vista will re-install for you.

Is BT British Telcom?

One thing I would recommend is that you download and install a Vista Sidebar gadget called Network Meter so you can see activity, signal strength and refresh IP.

http://addgadget.com/

Please run msinfo32 and save as an NFO file so that I can see some system info -
START | type msinfo32 and hit enter | Save as default NFO file - you'll see the NFO file extension when you go to save it.

Zip it up and attach to post.

Hi There,

My computer says I have Internet connection but if I try to go to a website in my browser it does not work.  However, if i hotspot from my phone, everything works fine.  I have tried both wireless and wired connection to my router.  Not sure if this is a browser issue or a virus or what.  The browsers I have are Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.  I use Windows 8.1.

Centuck

A:Internet Connection Is Up, but Browsers Do Not Work

Let's try to reset your router.Turn the computer off.On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.NOTE. Simple router disconnecting from a power source will NOT do.Restart computer.NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE

Gateway laptop running Vista home premium is connected to internet but browsers will not work. I have downloaded & installed over 150 updates that were available to this PC but cant connect to the net via Chrome or IE.When I received the laptop it would connect to Internet & browsers did work but was almost unusable due to the pop ups. I went thru it & uninstalled all the toolbars, download optimizers & all the other fluff that didn't appear to be legitimate software. The ones I wasn't sure of, I googled to be sure it was safe to remove. After getting it running good & smooth I attempted to get online but got nothing. Network properties shows that it is connected. Windows update does work as I downloaded over 150 updates for it & now it is totally up to date. I've ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, Vipre virus scan, rkill, malware bytes, Emisoft toolkit & Junkware remover. I've did all the different variables of ip config , flush, reset, & reset winsock & other variables I could find. I can ping google & get the the ping results with packet size & time. I've tried connecting in safe mode, no luck. Also, it will not connect via Ethernet either. I've also tried resetting my router & installing a wifi dongle. Those options didn't work either

the log from DDS is posted below.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Hello,

I have just recently installed Windows 8 Pro and have had no problems, except my internet browsers.
I am connected to the internet and can use some programs using it such as skype, but none of my browsers will work. (Internet explorer, Google chrome, Firefox.)
In google chrome i get Error 138, and have researched that and found that it is apparently a problem with your antivirus blocking it, although I have gone into my Bullguard's firewall and allowed all browsers as permitted programs.
I also allowed them all in the computers own control panel. I have also found that another answer to it is unchecking the proxy setting in internet options, although that makes no change.
Can someone else please post another possible solution, I will be happy to answer questions.
Thank you

A:Internet Connection but browsers do not work.

I would completely disable all third-party security items (AV, malware, and firewall) and let the Win8 security features take over protection for awhile as a test.

I have been searching for days for solutions, but nothing seems to work.  I've opened the command prompt and done ipconfig/release & renew, I have unplugged the router and restarted, and I'm not finding anything helpful.  I need someone who can walk me through some things I can try, and also interpret the results the command prompt gives back to me.

What useful information can I provide to get started?

Merci beaucoup.

Hi, none of IE, FF or Chrome currently work on my computer which does have an internet connection as Skype is still functional and the connection is confirmed. I tried a system restore to a date before some recent updates were installed but it didn't work. I've also tried deactivating any firewalls and anti-virus programs, tried the browsers and they still haven't worked. Could anyone suggest anything that might work? I would be extremely grateful. I have Windows Vista Version 6.0.

Thanks,

After having my laptop on for a few hours I encounter a situation where I clearly have an internet connection but my browsers do not work, (both Firefox and Edge). What's weird is, on firefox, it will usually go to home page (google) and google will search, but from there every link I try to click on will display as 'unable to connect'. The only remedy is to power down and reboot.

Reading around I see this issue cropping up back as far as windows 7 but no definitive cause, although potential DNS issues are mentioned.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi.
You could try assigning Google DNS servers to your adapter, and see if that makes a difference. In Control Panel>Network and Sharing>, Change Adapter Settings> right click on your wireless adapter and select Properties, then highlight the IPv4 and select properties, select the radio button Use the following DNS server addresses and input 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Hello all!

I am a computer technician and i have come across something i have never come across before.

The customers computer connects to the internet just fine. Only problem is that both IE8 and Mozilla Firefox do not work. What is really weird is that i can still click on the yellow shield with the exclamation point in it to get windows updates. I also can update both Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I have checked the settings for both IE8 and MF and they are both automatically detecting settings and the Local area connection is also automatically detecting settings

I am currently scanning for spyware and malware.

Any other ideas???

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Since updating my windows 8.1 it seems that now the browsers will not work at all on my laptop. Keeps giving me cannot find secure connection. I have reset the every protocol, checked the wifi connection. Ran trouble shooters, ran every malware and virus scan, nothing. When I boot in safe mode with networking it works fine. Also have used a portable Tor browser and it connects.
On my desktop, Chrome and IE will not work but Mozilla will BUT it will not complete any downloads, stops at 99%. I am stumped. Any thoughts PLEASE. This is driving me nuts.

Hi,

I have a problem that I haven't found a cure for anywhere:

I have a Sony Vaio with Windows 8 installed, and last night I tried to intall Open Office, Firefox and a program called Paint.net on it. The system wanted to restart, and it installed some updates, but after the updates were installed, the internet connection failed. The modem is fine, all other cpu's and ipads and devices connect normally, but the Windows 8 one won't work, neither on wlan or through ethernet.

It shows the network ok and connects to it ok, but when I open the browser, nothing happens. And after a while I get the normal error message.

Anyone who could help me with this one?

A:Internet connection ok, browsers (IE, Firefox) won't work

Have done the router re-set thing, and the tcp/ip and winsock reset thing, and almost all other things on earth.

But maybe it's worth to mention that I have f-secure Anti-virus + firewall installed. Previous to the updates the browsers were working fine, but afterwards, nada.

In a nutshell, it looks my parents' computer is able to get wifi connection and is connected to the "internet" but none of the browsers work, e.g. IE and Chrome, thus we can't actually get online. I am posting from another computer and have followed your guide by downloading DDS, etc and transferring program(s)/document(s) via a flash drive.

My mom tried to download some sort of accounting software guide/tutorial onto her computer. In the middle of the download, I saw that she was actually downloading quite a bit of "other" stuff including some games and other browsers and search engines, so we were able to stop some of the downloads midway. I went in and uninstalled and deleted the programs that came in that day that didn't seem familiar.

Unfortunately, after doing that the browsers stopped working and have the error message: (Chrome) Unable to connect to proxy server and (IE) The proxy server isn't responding; check your proxy settings 127.0.0.1:8877.

This is just a home computer and I am not aware of any proxy servers that we set up here. Hello,

I'm running Win8 on a Samsung 880Z Notebook

Yesterday my access to webpages through chrome was cut off, I switched over to Firefox without a hitch. Today Firefox is also cut off -both browsers cite "Unable to connect" on any page

Internet connection remains consistent - I'm provided by Comcast

I can still connect to the internet through various gaming platforms and communications software (Skype, Steam, B.net Launcher, League of Legends client) which account for the majority of my computer/internet usage.

Once both browsers were down I took a look at my active protection software (McAfee/Norton) and noticed that Norton was also completely cut off from the internet.

A preliminary web search on my mobile device for troubleshoot requests by users who have encountered a similar problem leads me to believe that my computer is likely infected.

I'm a novice to such forums, I hope I have provided enough information to start with, thank you for taking the time to read this and for your assistance if provided. I will be actively awaiting replies while I scour the articles section for tips on future prevention and recommended procedures/activities/software.

Warmly,
James

A:Win8 Internet Active - Browsers/Security cannot access - Virus Suspected

Issue resolved.

Did some more searching - removed Norton/McAfee and the browsers began to work again. I've installed Malwarebytes and ran a scan, it picked something up and deleted/quarantined it. In the process of installing Avira Antivirus and I plan to install additional resources mentioned in articles.

I don't understand why though - and I'd like some clarification on that. Why were those programs causing a complete shutdown of my internet browsing? Was it a safety measure in response to a threat? That would explain why removing them entirely gave me access again, but please grant me insight.

hello everybody.

this one is a strange issue which i dont understand.

Although my IBM thinkpad (XP pro) can connect to the interent, both Firefox and IExplorer cannot not load any pages using cable connection.
There is no problem with the connection and a second computer at home has internet access using with the same connection.

However, wireless networking works (outdoors - don't have wireless at home) although a bit slowly.

i uninstalled my firewall - it didn't change a thing.

i consulted the technical support of IBM and they said i need to reinstall Windows, which is quite a pain in the ass.
could there be another reason/solution for this problem?

thanks

Hi there,

i have a very small but very nagging problem concerning my internet connection. Sometimes the connection turns itself off, to counter this on the connection properties menu of Windows

(this screen, it's in portuguese but i think you know what i'm talking about))

i simply turned on the option to reconnect when the connection goes down, every 10 seconds in this case and i make it so it does NOT have to ask for the phone number. The whole purpose is so that it reconnects itself when i'm not at the computer.
It works, the problem is that every time i make a new connection, every time the computer starts, for instance, all these options turn back to default! I have to do it all over again every time i make a new connection! Wich is all the time!

Could somebody tell me WHY doesn't Windows save the options i choose? It does not make sense...

A:Can't keep internet connection active

Don't know if I fully understand and perhaps someone else here will have an idea as to how to fix it. Have you deleted all of your connections you currently have and then started a new one so there is only one to choose from?

A:keeping internet connection active

inbliss,

If you're using a Dial-Up connection to the Internet, go -> [Start] -> [Settings] -> [Control Panel] -> [Modems], since I haven't used anything but a cable in a couple of years I don't remember with [Tab] in the [Modems] dialog box its on but try them if you have to. Your looking for a [Check Box] titled "Disconnect If No activity in xx Minutes". Click on the [Check Box] to clear it.

If the box is not checked look for the connection that you use and check for a similar setting.

If neither of these work let us know and I'm sure one of our Pro's will come up with a better solution but if you're using a regular Modem one or both of the above should work.

I play the game world of warcraft, but I got ip banned so I downloaded your HotSpot shield, whenever I am playing the game my latency shoots up to over 1,000. If you've ever played the game you know it's not very pleasent.

The game wasn't this high of latency before I installed and started running HotSpot, i'm wondering if you guys are having technical issues or what? Whenever I do try and connect to hotspot it does say something about waiting for server, any ideas?

thanks for the help if you do reply. i'll be waiting. :)

A:Internet Connection(Low) while HotSpot is active

"Hotspot Shield creates a virtual private network (VPN) between your laptop or iPhone and our Internet gateway. This impenetrable tunnel prevents snoopers, hackers, ISP?s, from viewing your web browsing activities, instant messages, downloads, credit card information or anything else you send over the network. Hotspot Shield security application is free to download, employs the latest VPN technology, and is easy to install and use." from http://hotspotshield.com/

sounds like this VPN is causing it to go slow. make sure your firewalls are not trying to block it...

quick question why did they ban your IP?

I am at a loss and somewhat embarassed about the situation. Way back, I was prompted to 'update' my Norton Antivirus (which I have since uninstalled). Being a novice, I did and what transpired I can't really make sense of. When my laptop is directly connected to a dsl connection, there are some sites or programs that do not register as having an internet connection, when I really do. For example, my Mozilla Firefox browser says "The connection was refused when attempting to contact en-us.www.mozilla.com.", but Internet Explorer works. Microsoft Office Outlook no longer works and when I have tried downloading Adobe Flash player, it is the same thing- no internet connection noted. I am using my laptop (windows xp) computer 'handcuffed' with what I can do. Can you help? Any advise would be so very appreciated. Don't know if it has anything to do with 'window' per se, but I didn't know where to post it.
Best,

2) I first ran the exe with 'update' option. There were some error messages thrown up (cant remember the exact messages) and this still showed a update required message. so the next time i re ran the exe with a clean update. agian error message to the effect - cant run zll**.exe file. after this i got a message to restart computer to effect changes
3) on restart baloon in system tray saying zonealarm turned off. click here for details.
4) on clicking i got the option that Windows firewall was turned off. click here to enable. clicked enable
5) after that i cant seem to connect to internet

i have a wireless router so am able to connect on 2 other laptops only unable to connect via desk top.

can somene help please.

hope these details are sufficient

A:Cannot access Internet despite connection active

Why would you enable the Windows Firewall if you are using ZoneAlarm? Running 2 firewalls can easily prevent connection.

I'd suggest you completely uninstall ZoneAlarm, turn off the Windows Firewall, and then reinsatll ZA.

To Whom it may concern,

Hey guys, got hopefully an easy problem to fix here. So i was infected with the HDD Rescue and removed it using your guide with the RKill and MalwareBytes. I restarted my computer as MalwareBytes requested so that it could delete some files and returned to find out that i cannot open my internet explorer browser. So i tried to open Google Chrome and it opens but it can never find a website it just constantly loads. I checked my internet and it does work because i can still play games online. This problem may be from a constant trojan that keeps popping up in my McAfee called Generic.dx!vdv which ops up as different file names but always in the same folder and always with a random 3 letter name. For your reference, the other trojans that it detected while malwarebytes was running are, Downloader-AWM.gen.i, FakeAlert-FakeAVBW!env.b, Generic.dx!uul, and ErtFor.b!a but only the Generic.dx!vdv seems to be popping up now. Let me know if you guys or gals have any suggestions. I would LOVE to get this problem solved. Below i have posted my log from MalwareBytes when i deleted all the files associated with HDD Rescue, and as well as a Hijackthis log taken right before this post.

Thank You!

Hi

I recently had and, with this site's help, successfully (or so I thought)removed the "SMART HDD" virus/malware.

However some part of it must still be in my pc as every time I try to run Internet explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome etc the program does not start and instead I get the generic windows error "program name" has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I get a similar message when trying to run your rkill program amd also when trying to access internet options from the control panel.

My operating system is Windows XP.

I have managed a work around by renaming the Google Chrome executable file as chrome2.exe.

I thank you in advance and look forward to your replies.

Hey everyone,
Getting a very popular problem: browsers stop working after a little while or don't load properly. It comes and it goes. Running XP and have scanned with Trojan Remover, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira Anti-Virus, but nothing found. Very frustrating. Have tried disabling Firefox add-ons but no luck. When it hits, none of the browsers work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My internet browsers don't work (Posting this from a separate PC). My internet works fine. I can connect to Steam, Google Earth, and other programs that use the internet but the browsers themselves are broken. I have IE6 (I reinstalled Windows XP a while ago and haven't bothered to upgrade) Chrome and Firefox and none of them work. Chrome and IE both give me "not responding" messages after they open up and Firefox doesn't open at all, although I can see its process running in the Task Manager. I've recently got rid of a virus (AV suite, if that helps). I manually uninstalled it then ran Malwarebytes and the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, and it hasn't been giving me any problems, so I don't think it's caused by that. I found all of this to be really odd, and I'm tired of computer problems, please halp.

Also, hi! I'm new here!

Hi,

I have an application that I want to use for long periods of time, but the internet connection needs to be up. Now, to save power I thought that I could put my computer in to sleep mode, but everytime it sleeps, it loses internet connection.

My question is: Can the internet connection stay active during sleep mode? And if so, how can I do that?

I have already tried unchecking 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' option on my network adapter, but without results.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to replies...

-Marty

A:Active Internet connection during sleep mode?

No. If the computer is sleeping the internet connection can't be active (i.e. which would mean you also have a program running handling the connection, transfering data plus then you have memory in use and disk etc. so how much of your computer could really be asleep anyway

/* edit */
just fyi: the connection is allowed to be "awake" only to look for remote "wake up from sleep" type requests coming remotely. No other type of internet activity supported in sleep mode

My computer runs on vista and since attempting to uninstall norton 2 days ago, I can no longer connect to any browsers. My wireless net connects fine but when opening Internet explorer, it shows that the page cannot be displayed and there seems to be a problem with adapters. I uninstalled the 6to4 adapter as it was showing the yellow symbol and then rebooted. Still no connection to browser. Can u fix this please? I rely greatly on the net for work purposes. Thanks in advance!

How do u reinstall ie with no connection to browsers? I'm having the same issue as above. I've called my net provider and they tried command prompts, reboots, safe mode admin runs and still no change.

A:Connection to Internet but no browsers

Try using the norton removal tool.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/U...val-Tool.shtml
click on the above link and download.
This will remove all norton produsts including norton ghost and go back.
You will obviously need to do this at another computer, but just save to a usb flash drive.
This should restore normal function.

i have uninstalled service pack 3, reset the winsock thing, flushed the dns, and did a ton of other things too.

one thing i find interesting is when i try to go to a site, it wont go, but the favicon for the site shows, leading me to believe its a virus.

i cant download any things to scan the computer, but malwarebytes works and shows nothing. also, system restore offers no earlier dates to restore to.

any advice would be appreciated as i work on this computer

I've tried everything I know of and taken advice from friends and forums, but I still can't fix it. I've run Avast and Spybot in safe and normal mode and they can't find anything. Reset the browsers and my IP address. Friend downloaded Winsockfixer or something and that didn't work either. I really don't want to have to uninstall and reinstall Windows, so any ideas?

Windows Vista:
I'm connected ok to the internet (can ping Yahoo from command promt), but none of the browsers will load a page. (IE8, Firefox, Google Chrome)
Latest Windows updates just downloaded and installed ok, however.

In IE, I've checked that no proxy settings are enabled.
I've used a couple of "Netsh" commands that I found (and rebooted each time) but nothing seems to work. I did find that McAffee AND Vista's firewall were both on, tried disabling both, but no luck. Currently have just McAfee's firewall on.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Edit: I just found that the browsers work ok in safe mode. I uninstalled all the McAffe products, but still no Internet browsing in normal mode.

Hey guys,

I'm connected to internet but browsers (IE8, Firefox 3.5, Chrome, Safari 4) just don't work. With IE8, I get the message " Interenet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I tried the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button in IE8 which launches Windows Network Diagnostics which tells me "Security policy settings on this computer might be blocking the connection" and suggests adjusting policy in Windows Firewall.

The other browsers give similar messages when I try using them.

Tried disabling Windows firewall but no change. Ran avast! anti-virus and superantispyware but nothing solved.

I noted this problem when Windows Update downloaded and installed security updates on Sep 11 2009.

Tried system restore before these updates but nada.

Skype and utorrent (still downloads and uploads already found torrents) work and the Network and Sharing Center says I'm connected to internet and local.

Wondering if there is some virus hijacking browsers but allowing other programs to access internet.

Or wireless card issues?

I'm running Windows Vista home premium 64-bit SP1 on a new 1-month old Dell Studio 15 with Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN wireless card and Linksys WRTG54 router.

My other laptops are also affected:
Dell Vostro 1500 with Win XP SP3
Dell Vostro 1320 with Vista Home Basic SP1
Both used with wireless N cards with same router.

All had worked well previously until updating by Windows Update on Sep 11.

Originally, I had an explorer.exe error which relates to spyware. I have followed the instruction from a friend who is a computer technician, he suggested me using the following program:

- Pandasoftware's online activescan
- Ad Aware
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- Spywareblaster
- SpywareDoctor

After I have run these programs several times in XP safe mode, there are many spywares caught and cleaned. However, the real issue is this...

When I went back into normal windows mode, my browsers don't work; both IE and firefox. I checked my internet connection, checked my msn; they all work. I even went to test my brother's computer to see if the connection has any problem.

So, after telling my friend about this, he suggested me to come here and seek help. I'm currently typing this thread under safe mode if anyone is wondering. Weird, my browser works when i'm in safe mode, but not in normal mode.

Does anyone have ideas on what's happening? Please help me out.

Download HiJackThis - this program will help determine if there's any malware on your computer.

1. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.

2. Click on the "Unzip" button to install the newer version.

3. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\

4. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose - Do a system scan and save a logfile.

5. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on Save log.

6. Post the HiJackThis.log file

This is a very frustrating problem. My computer is connected through both (new) connections (and no they are not connectedf at the same time), wireless and physical ethernet connection. They are both practically new and i have never had problems with my Laptop until recently. Every time i load an internet connection whether it be through ethernet or wireless neither of the IE or FIREFOX browsers will even load, it seems that when i have an internet connection running NONE of any of the programs installed into my laptop will even work, making me have to reset the laptop a few times. But i do keep seeing this "high warning" from Norton from a virus thats been on my computer ever since the internet has stopped working. So i think that this particular virus is blocking me from even opening a browser.

NOTE: IE, FIREFOX, WINDOWS MESSENGER, WINDOWS INTERNET GAMES won't connect.

So is it the virus that is causing all these problems? and if so are there any programs to help to rid of this problem?

All modems seem to be running fine for other people.

Thank-you

Hello everyone, I have the same problem with the 2 browsers I 'am running on a Windows Vista Home 64 Bit machine (Google Chrome and IE 8). I have been having problems where sometimes when I click a link or type in a web address
Chrome will hang and will say "Resolving Host" in the lower left corner. Then it pops up a page saying "Oops! This link appears broken." Chrome is an allowed program though my Windows Firewall.
The other browser Internet Explorer has the same problem. They both work intermittently! This is driving me crazy Can someone please help me?
FYI - I have McAfee Security Centre, I tried disabling but it doesn't help.
ONE MORE THING i would like to mention, Once I use Hotspot shield (Proxy) Both browsers work fine.
I would really appreciate any help guys. I am running out of ideas.

Whenever I try to connect to any website in any browser aside from Internet Explorer x64 (Chrome, Firefox), the page will not load, and in Chrome, I get the following:This webpage is not availableThe webpage at <any url here> might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. Error 137 (net::ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED): Unknown error. Firefox does not give any error message, aside from stating that it cannot connect to the webpage.I have run: MBAM (found some things; removed), TDSSKiller (found nothing), Microsoft Security Scanner (found some things; removed), and SUPERAntiSpyware (found nothing). When attempting to update, MBAM displays this error: I have tried "netsh winsock reset" and a few variations, and none have worked. My firewall seems to be bugged, but I do not know how to fix it. I think that this is a result of the virus.Sorry if this is lengthy or anything, but I'm sorta desperate to get this fixed. Thanks in advance!------So far, nothing has worked. I've been able to update MBAM, and it found a few extra things, but to no avail. I'm gonna burn the SP1 update to a disk and load it to see how that goes, but I'd rather not reset a bunch of things and have to update them.

As you are being helped at another forum, I suggest you wait until that process is completed before posting about the same problem in another forum. Having multiple attempts to help you with the same problem can certainly lead to confusion on your part, duplication of effort by those attempting to help you, and most likely the suggestion of conflicting and mutually interfering, cross-purpose steps.
Consequently, I am closing this thread. If, after following the advice from the other forum, you still have problems, you may PM me or any other Moderator, and we will reopen this thread.

I've tried to look around the forums but haven't found a thread which suits my problem. If I'm duplicating something or missed something, please re-direct me.

I'm currently using my parent's PC to access the forum. I could really do with som help fixing it on my laptop if anyone can offer advice.

I connect to the Internet via a homeplug system (basically it's a set of plugs which allow the Internet to travel through the power lines - one plug attaches to my parent's PC and the other to my laptop upstairs, allowing me to use their Internet connection.) My parents Internet is fine (as you can see) but since yesterday mine isn't working properly.

Now it connects, it even says its connected (full speed). And Skype works, as does a music programme called Spotify which needs to connect to the Internet to work. There's no problems with either of these. MSN does not work however. But the main problem is that neither FF or IE will load any websites. IE just gives me a blank page and FF says "Connection interrupted. The document contains no data. The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again."

So far I've tried restarted both my laptop and my parent's PC, clearing the DNS cache on both computers, clearing out the cache, cookies, browsing history etc on both my browsers and checking that both browsers are set to work online and using an automatically detected proxy for the Internet.

A:None of my Browsers Work but the Internet Connects

Hello, there are afew things you can try. First if you are using the default firewall which comes with windows disable it temporarily.
Now to do this click start then run and type firewall.cpl click off not recommended.

Now try the browser again. If you are using IE7 there is an option located in all programs called Internet Explorer with no-addons try this also.

Now click start and run again
type cmd
type ping google.com
are you getting a reply back.

Another thing you can try, switch the laptop on, then keep pressing f8 then choose safe-mode + network. If f8 shows boot order try f5. Now this might work because it loads less services and processes.

You can also try this
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

or there is another utility I can't think of which I will post.

Also I forgot to add, open cmd again
then type ipconfig /all
is this device got all the IP address listed.

Hi,

Thanks for any help with this problem.

I came into work yesterday and found my computer unable to connect by browser to the internet. I have both IE and Firefox and neither worked. I did a bit of Googling and tried different things such as removing all antivirus (AVG) and spyware (spybot) programs and turning off Windows firewall.

I can ping Yahoo.com so I know I am connected to the internet. I tried connecting via browser in Safe Mode but that didn't work either. I read some of the similar posts in this forum and ensured my appropriate services are all started, and even tried resetting the TCP/IP.

I am running Windows XP SP3 on a desktop PC connected to a Linksys router. There are three other computer on the network and all three can connect just fine.

I had not made any changes to the computer prior to coming in and finding the browsers non functional. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My Internet Explorer just started out of the blue to not load images on web pages. For example, when I go to www.cnn.com, I get an error message: "line 44", "Char 1", "error object expected", "code 0". It does this on most sites that have a lot of images (for example ESPN, etc.). I went to the Spywareinfo web site and somebody said I had the coolwebsearch infection. I downloaded cwshredder, spybot, adaware, and hijackthis and ran them all. I reposted my log and someone said it didn't appear I had the infection any longer. I then downloaded Mozilla , Opera, and Netscape because I thought it was a corrupt IE problem. Guess what, the same problems with loading the pages appeared in all browsers. I assumed then that is was a registry problem so went to the next step - reformat. I have now reformatted my hard drive (twice) hoping to restore the original settings and get the web pages to load right. However, to no avail it did not work. I get the same errors even on a fresh install without installing any other software, excet for my ATI video driver which is the latest out there. I am somewhat somputer savvy and this is driving me crazy. I can't understand why a re-install of WIN XP Pro would not fix the problem. It worked fine for 2 years up until a week ago. Has anybody ever heard of this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Ken

Download Hijackthis.
Save it to a folder on your hard drive.
Unzip the file.
Scan your machine, then click on Save Log.

Post a copy back here and someone will be happy to review it.

I'm running on windows 7. My internet explorer says that the page cannot be loaded when I try viewing sites and firefox won't even open up at all. This all started after I updated my firefox. I'm connected to the internet as online games and IM still works, but none of my browsers work.

I ran malwarebytes and it came up with nothing, says my computer is clean.

I have no idea what's going on, if anyone knows what happened and how to fix this i'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Hello,

I own a Toshiba Satellite L505 with Windows 7 as the operating system. The problem I'm having is that although I'm quite sure I have a strong internet connection, not one of my browsers (i.e. Firefox 4, Google Chrome, or IE) are able to go to load any online addresses. I'm connected to the internet via wires through a router using a cable modem. I've looked at other forums for help, but following their advice hasn't gotten me any substantial results so far.

I really have no where else to go besides the local Best Buy's Geek Squad.Click to expand...

Oh, my; you really know how to put the pressure on us!

This could be a non-Windows firewall or security suite blocking the browsers because it is mis-configured, corrupted or its data definitions are out of date. What one do, or did, you have on the machine (if any)?

You may need the following repairs ...

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or 7.

Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

First of all, I've gotten a lot of help from this site in the past & can usually resolve my issues without having to start a new thread. However, I have a Gateway laptop with Vista home premium that has brought me to my knees. It's a friend of mines computer & it was severely infected with ad-ware & pop ups. When I received the laptop it would connect to Internet & browsers did work but was almost unusable due to the pop ups. Those options didn't work either

for the last couple weeks I've been having a problem getting on the internet. MSN Messenger works fine and it downloads at a decent speed...when it works. The problem is that Internet Explorer or Firefox will only connect about half the time. Most of the time I get a little black clock in the bottom left hand corner and nothing else happens, not even an "internet explorer cannot display this page" message. After closing the page and trying again, sometimes up to 15 times, it will eventually work but is often slow when going from one page to another, and then eventually stops again. Other times it works great. When this happens restarting sometimes helps but not always. I'm running XP Home SP3.
So far I've tried a different network card, replaced the network cable, formatted the computer, reset the modem/ router, tried a different harddrive with a fresh install of Windows, all to no avail. I called our internet provider and they said everything checks out ok on their end. I've ran AVG, Spybot and Hijackthis and they show no problems. I'm stumped.

Hi Getavw, Have you tried pinging a website such as google, to see if any data is actually getting through, let alone being displayed?

To ping a website
Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Command prompt > enter "ping" followed by the URL (e.g. ping www.google.com) then hit enter.

Once it's tried it will report back the time taken for each of it's 3 attempts to be sent as well as return to your computer. It will also report the percentage loss if any packets of data do not return. Repost with the results and we can go from there

Hi,
I hope you can help.
I recently updated my chrome browser and ended up with trovi search engine and numerous tabs opening with search conduit home page. It has impossible to get rid of. I am now unable to connect to the internet as my service provider has blocked access due to infected browser.

I'm not sure if the problem is related but since the trouble with the browser I am getting error messages saying that my laptop is low on system memory which I never had before.

When I try to download large files on my browsers (any file that takes more than a few seconds to load), my computer "loses" its link to the internet. The download stops, I can't browse anymore and I lose my Skype connection.

This happens on a totally random basis and can occur at any point during a download and some downloads work normally at some times. It only used to happen when I was attempting to download using Firefox or IE, and I was able to use the Opera browser as a workaround because files always downloaded normally when I was using that.

BUT, I recently changed to a different account with my ISP and now Opera is experiencing the same problems. I can "reconnect" my internet by going to my Local Area Connection icon in my network connections folder, disabling it (it still says that it is enabled before I do this) and then enabling it again. Then the internet starts to work again.

My computer is hooked up to a wireless router and the laptop I have remains connected to the internet when my PC loses the connection. (This indicates to me that the internet is functioning properly) The same things occurs with my firewall up and down.

This was happening when I had my D-Link 302G modem hooked up to the computer so I switched over to a Belkin high speed ADL2+ modem and I am experiencing exactly the same problem. I am running Windows XP. The problem also occurs if I have the modem running straight into the PC with the wireless router removed.

Good afternoon,

For the past week I've been having internet connection problems on my Asus laptop. This happens only on my laptop, not my tablets, phone, PS4, Xbox or anything else. I usually use Chrome for browsing, but have tested this error across all browsers (Firefox, IE) with the same results;

Chrome - Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
Firefox - The connection has timed out
IE - This page can?t be displayed

While I have a very fast internet connection (23Mbps download, 2.13Mbps upload), browsing the internet has become next to impossible with webpages timing out, hitting refresh, page loading half way, hitting refresh again, getting a connection time out and going around in circles... About 90% of my browsing involves this scenario; sometimes it doesn't happen on the first try, but it WILL happen within a couple minutes of browsing.

Things I've tried;

-restart router
-restart computer
-apply all windows updates
-ipconfig /flushdns
-ipconfig /release
-ipconfig /renew
-netsh winsock reset catalog
-netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
-netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
-checked proxy settings
-remove unused browser add-ons
-completed virus/malware scans to detect any viruses
-cleared browsing data, temporary internet files and cookies
-plugged in ethernet cable
-turned off anti-virus programs
-CMD prompt, ping google.com

Needless to say I'm going out of my mind trying to fix this. It came out of nowhere. Any help would be appreciated!

How's your browsing experience when you are logged on to Safe Mode with Networking (restart your computer, continue tapping F8 then select this option)?

Also, please try creating a new User Account and see if you can replicate the issue. Try both wired and wireless connections.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me. About three weeks ago out of the blue the browser I was using at that time Opera stuck loading its home page (Google). It would open then say blank page accompanied by the swirling circle despite google's address appearing in the search bar.

This problem was also present in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome. I know it is not a problem with the modem as Utorrent, Steam etc all connect and work perfectly. I went away for four days and came home to find it working but it soon cut out again. I have tried various system restores, command prompts etc and nothing has worked yet. I am typing this from the Steam browser which is slow and ineffective. Please if anyone could be of assistance it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

A:Internet Is Connected But Browsers Dont Work

I have a similar problem. Loaded Spyware Doctor V6 and cleared ~400 maleware/viruses out of my son's computer. He's got service, since the last IM software runs flawlessly. But when I open IE7 I get a 404 error message - cannot display page. This is a Dell E520 running XP with Service pack 3 installed. Firefox also will not display pages, so I'm hoping the problem is related. I've shut down both MaCaffee Windows firewalls, and I know the system still has "Mirar" virus - which is what started this.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm not a serious Geek-type, but can follow directions.

Thank you for this service - and happy holidays to all!

A:Internet Access however browsers don't work yet skype does.

can we see an ipconfig /all and pings tests - you will need to copy onto a working PC

what firewall / security suite do you have on the PC - Norton, mcafee etc

how are you connected by cable or wireless ?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

I have searched all over the net and asked around but no one seems to have an answer to this one.

After my computer sets in standby for a while, (usually for an hour or so), I can't get either of my Internet browsers to open, (IE or Mozilla Fire Fox), as well as some other shortcuts and file folders.

It returns from standby just fine, no lag or anything.

After I tried to get both browsers to run, I opened my task manager to see what was going on in the background and found both browsers registered as running in the "Processes" section but not the "Applications" section. I assume the same goes for other things that will not open, but haven't tested that yet.

Weirder still is the inconsistency of it all. Some file folders and shortcuts, as I said above, won't work... but some will. I've been at this for over a month and can't pinpoint a solution.

Thanks in advance for any help in this. Iím stumped.

PS - BIOS and Windows are both updated and current.

I'm connected a server and the internet on it is acting weird
My normal browsers (firefox + Chrome) are randomly stopping and refusing to load pages while my Tor browser (for facebook, etc) continues to work as normal. Sometimes Skype is affected but I'm not sure if it's directly related. If i reconnect the cable then it starts working again for a short time.
This has only started happening recently. If had problems with it last week but that was because AVG decided to block any connections to either of my adapters...
I think it may be related to the DNS but i'm not really to sure.
If you have any idea what's causing this and even better a solution be expecting a cookie in the post
Thanks

A:Why does Tor internet and skype work but not my normal browsers?

It may help to reset Winsock for windows 7. This is sometimes required if TCP/IP gets corrupted.

1. Click start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe, click Run as administrator, and then press Continue.

2. Type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note If the command is typed incorrectly, you will receive an error message. Type the command again. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt. Then, go to step 3.

3. Type exit, and then press ENTER. You should be prompted to reboot, if not you should reboot and test.

You can change to a different DNS server by going into your routers set up page and making the changes there.
Google's DNS work good. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

If you can post a screen shot of your ipconfig/all after making these changes it might be helpful.

Don't know why this is happening but, all my program that use the internet like (Chat programs, games , etc.) work but when i try to use a browser it tends to fail after working awhile. I usually have to reset the computer to get it to work again. Does anyone have any pointers on how to fix this browser issue? since it really is getting irritating

Hello,
Whenever I try to open in Internet Explorer on my desktop PC, I get the Unable to Display Page, but:
-- Firefox and other browsers works fine.
-- IE works fine on my other computers.

So, I have a good connection, my other computers and laptops work fine with IE, and all the other browsers work fine.

I've deleted temporary internet files, etc., ran Network Diagnostics and the Diagnostic Log says: IP Layer Diagnostic Corrupted IP routing table.

But wouldn't a Corrupted IP routing table affect ALL browsers?

How do I fix this?
Thank you.

Hi all,

I've seen a similar problem to mine around the forums quite a bit, but not in this specific form, so I figured I'd open a thread about it - hope this is the right thing to do.

So I moved house recently and connected to the new wireless network fine - but since yesterday, I have intermittent periods during the day (a few hours) when, despite still being connected to the internet, my browsers will fail to load websites. This includes Firefox, IE and Opera which I've all tried.

What makes this odd is the fact that all other programmes using the internet work fine: Skype, MSN Messenger, Mozilla Thunderbird etc. all work without problems.

What makes it even stranger is the fact that there is one site I can access without problems - my University webmail page. This loads fine and I can send/receive emails via webmail fine. (Note - the computer is not in a University wireless network but an unrelated private one).

I've scanned my computer several times using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SuperAntiSpyware and AdAware and removed everything they found, to no avail. These were all installed before I moved house as well so I can't imagine them causing an issue.

Once the problem arises, rebooting, switching wireless connection off/back on etc do not work; my ability to use my browsers seems to return randomly after a varying period of time.

That's all the relevant info I can think of - if anyone has any clue what might be going on plea... Read more

ok i know that there are alot of posts like this. i've looked through alot of them and mostly they say that the firewall or anitvirus is the problem. i use vista ultimate. up until yesterday thr browsers were woking fine. when i turned on my computer today, firefox wouldnt connect. i tried using IE, but that didnt work either. i use the firewall provided by vista. i checked it and it was fine. i scanned with spybot and avg for viruses and there was nothing. i plugged the cable from the modem to my computer and firefox still doesnt work. so the router was not the problem. i've disabled window defender, and that doesnt work either. i dont use norton or avast so those are not the problems. i tried a system restore the the day before all this happened and it still doesnt connect.

so now im wondering what can be my problem.

My PC has been infected with a malware for quite some time so I downloaded Malwarebyte and ran it to cleanup my PC. It detected a few infections and quarantined accordingly but I have been unable to browse through any explorer since.

I have made sure that the browsers are not using a proxy server and automatically detect settings is checked.

I also tried a command ipconfig /flushdns bt the problem persists.

Attached you will find the FRST logs.

Please help

Around a week ago I installed Windows 8.1, and I can't help but think this problem is related to that. My computer (a Toshiba Satellite C855) is apparently connected to the internet, but yesterday I suddenly couldn't browse any websites. I didn't change any settings before this happened. This happened with Firefox, but I also couldn't browse with Chrome. I restarted my computer and it worked fine for about a day before I ran into problems again. I thought it might've been a virus, but a full scan didn't detect anything. I even restarted it again, but after probably 15 minutes my browsers stopped working. Any idea what the issue could be? Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Connected to internet, but no browsers work (Windows 8.1)

What antivirus and antimalware software are you using? Can you run them in safe mode?

If you know some computer specifics then you can run Hijackthis and see whats starting up when you log in. If you do not know much then please do not use the software, if you disable the wrong startup software you can very easely stop making windows work and you have to either do a repair, a windows reset to a previous state or a full reinstall.

i noticed a while ago that my internet explorer browser would never be able to connect to sites, but it wasn't a concern because i used firefox and opera. the same thing happened with firefox, but i still had opera so i ignored the issue. when opera 9.10 came out, i downloaded it and installed it, but then my opera stopped loading as well. i can still connect, as my desktop weather widget and p2p programs are still working, but i can't do anything to get my internet browsers to work. i've tried the winsock repair and registry cleaners, but nothing helps. anyone have any experience with this or suggestions?

hmm, are you sure you have the wireless modem on, most laptops (you didnt give the exact model and brand so I cannot google it) have a button, normally by fn+ another key or a button above they keyboard that controls the modem.

Also are you sure your not attempting to connect onto a secure network and mistyping the password? It could be if you are near a restaurant (McDonalds for instance) and trying to get on their network. If you are just barely within range then it will do the same thing as you describe, this holds true for all networks.

In short:
--double check that the wireless card is on.
--Make sure you are logging on the correct network. (right click the icon in your taskbar and chose "View wireless networks" if you are using the windows manager. If you are using anything else besides network magic I cannot help you there for I do not know any other network connectors.)
--And try again.

Edit1: Your wireless modem driver could be out of date as well.

Hi, all! I've only begun experiencing this issue in the past month. I took a few months off from online gaming in general, and returned to strange connectivity issues. It's happened in FFXIV, Diablo 3, Path of Exile, and Borderlands 2. My internet's never been the best, a measly 3 mbps, but it's always been extremely stable while gaming until now. What happens is I will suddenly be disconnected from the game's servers. I'm not always running other applications, but when I am (Skype or Pandora through my browser,) I don't lose connection with those services. My internet doesn't really disconnect, but I can't keep in contact with the servers for long. This usually happens every 30 minutes or so. Connecting through a VPN (WTFast) helps it occur less, but it does happen from time to time. I've tried disabling my software firewall (AVG) but it doesn't help. The router firewall is disabled, and I've forwarded appropriate ports for the games I'm playing.

Granted, my router is VERY OLD. It's possible that it's failing, but I'd rather troubleshoot the issue before throwing money at the problem. It's a Westell A90-750015-07. My ISP is Verizon. I haven't contacted their support line because I don't pay the bill and I'm not sure if I can. In any event, I'd rather look into it myself first, but I'm really not sure where to start. Nothing unusual turns up in Netalyzr reports or tracerts to game servers. I'm not experiencing packet loss and my ping remains very stable. It doesn't eve... Read more

Hello everyone,
For the past three days, I have had a problem with my PC.
It will show I have internet connection, however, no matter what browser I use, whether Firefox, IE or AOL, they will say no internet connection. I decided to disable my Windows Firewall, and even tho it still does it, sometimes I'm able to get online. When I cant get online, I have to reboot my PC and then I'm able to access internet and all works out but then will just freak out and not work. Now, yesterday, I also had problems with my 1394 bus IEEE driver, but was able to fix that and I'm not even sure what happened to begin with it. Today, I decided to remove AOL, I cant stand it anymore anyways. I also downloaded "Advanced system care" and did a full system scan, and it said it fixed a TON of stuff. I also did a full virus scan and also a complete boot scan, where I saw that my Java had some corrupted files and also another program, and I did a malware/spyware scan and with everything, there were no virus' and no maleware/spyware at all. Thank God! However, I still haven't been able to pinpoint why its just losing connection and I just cant seem to find any help. My drivers for my modem are up to date as well. I usually just use my Firefox and what will happen is that I'm online, and when I click a tab to open up a new window, it will just say loading...continuously and then it will say theres no internet connection. Hi,

I have two computers, both running Win 7 Pro.  One performs normally in all ways.  The other was fine until a few days ago;  we moved from a hotel WiFi network to a residential cable modem/router, and anything requiring an internet connection suddenly became very unreliable.  Browsers spin their wheels endlessly, Outlook 2010 won't connect to the Gmail IMAP servers, and so on.  The network connection is fast and stable from the other computer.  Both computers run Avast Internet Security, with weekly full scans scheduled.  Both the hotel and the residential networks have been treated as public networks. A quick scan with Avast revealed no malware on the malfunctioning computer.  The good computer is an old HP Pavillion DV7 4070us, the bad one is a newer Sony Vaio VPCSC1AFM. Nothing else has been changed recently.
I tried Malwarebytes.  Initially, it balked at the update, but after a restart it updated its database successfully.  It froze when I tried a scan.  I ran Rkill (nothing detected) and TDSSKiller (no threats found) then Malwarebytes again (no malware found.)

I also have tried changing DNS servers, and disabling IPv6.

I have tried the malfunctioning computer on a guest network at work, and have experienced no difficulties there.  That points to something on the residental network that isn't getting along with something on the malfunctioning computer.  I'm not knowledgab... Read more

Hi!
Whenever I try to browse on my laptop, the browsers (all of them - I've tried IE, Firefox, Opera and Chrome) keep on freezing randomly every 20-30 seconds for about 5 seconds. At the same time, I could see the same in steam - the game download speed at the very same moments suddenly drops to zero, and then goes back up. All the other applications work fine and even steam downloads work fine as long as I don't use the browsers.

This is a brand new laptop and I've done a full antivirus scan, so it's definitely not a malware/virus issue.
I've been using the same internet cable with my windows 7 laptop for around a year, and never had a single issue with browser freezing.

Any advice on how I could try to fix this?
Thanks!

I can get on either browser (whether it be IE, FF, Chrome) and it will work just fine, but after 10-15 minutes, I can no longer access any sites. I haven't downloaded anything recent either so I can't figure out what is causing it
I am currently connected wirelessly, and it has happened on two different access points. Home and work.
Anyways, could use any and all help. I'm getting tired of restarting!

A:Losing internet connection after 10 minutes to browsers. Please help!

As a first measure I would restore from a restore point before last night
and just to keep it safe, run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes

At home you could try to switch the channel (check your router manual) but that doesn't help you at work.

I would go to your Power Options -> Advanced settings Wireless Adapter settings set Power savings mode of whatever plan you're using to Maximum performance

I have VISTA home premium+ HP laptop g60 amd 32 bit op sys. problem is can only get IE to work, I have disabled ms firewall as best as I can. I also have undone an MS Update connected with IE to get IE to work. I have tried most options under the Internet tools. I have stopped practically everything starting on start up. I have reset TCP through cmd prompt. so for example i download google chrome and it wont connect. I did have symantecs NORTON 360 internet thing which I believe I have disabled. I did have problems uninstalling it. The only firewall registered on the system is the MS Firewall. this my first post ever on a tech site so please be gentle if I havefailed to mention something. the problem occurs whether im wireless, hardwired or on mobile bb. I think I now have IE8. The internet connection works with an existing game programme ( KGS Go)

about two weeks ago the lap top stopped working I resolved this by process of elimination and found that 6 norton drivers were somehow involved. I removed those drivers. I use 02 mobile broadband and believe it was their new version of the connection manager conflicting somewhere. this occurred at the same time ms released some internet updates. Asyou can tell I am not particularly technical but would appreciate some guidance. many thanks in anticipation.

I am trying to avoid replacing the OS on the drive.

for details of this problem, please see my original post here at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/206488/ff-ie-intermittently-refuse-to-access-internet/please read it carefully. thanks.I didn't give system specs there - windows XP home, SP3, right up to date, 550mhz CPU, 120g and 40g HD's plus 500g external drive, with 100g windows partition on it. Zone alarm Pro firewall, avg8 free antivirus. I use BOOTIT NG, a dual boot, partition manager, and imaging program. I posted this problem at Protonic, and have had no answers there. my original post here was closed because I was considering using combofix. so, left on my own, here is what I have done. bootit ng does a bootable image on a weekly basis, so I decided I would go back a bit to when I knew the problem was in its first stage -browsers would quit, but closing and restarting them resolved the problem. the image is usually copied to my 100g partition on my external HD.so I copied my image for jan 14, to my second HD, and booted from it. now the browsers work, and everything is fine. after using the system for a while, with no problems, AVG update comes up and says it needs the system rebooted. this doesn't normally happen with AVG, so there must be some significant program change. immediately upon reboot, the browser problem occurred. so I replaced the jan 14 system with the jan 7 bootable image, uninstalled avg8, and now the system has been running perfectly since that time, feb 26 or 27. the browser problem... The little icon in the corner indicates that the internet connection wors no browser will load any pages. I've released/renewed my ip address, tried in safe mode with networking (doesn't work), tried tcp/ip repair and pinging (all said, could not find host). There are other computers in the house and this is the only one that has this problem.

I've heard great things about techguy forums and I really hope someone here can help me. It'd be much appreciated.

A:Internet connection working but browsers won't load anything

Check the proxy settings and make sure that they are not set.

As to pinging, try to ping 8.8.8.8

If that works, then you have a DNS issue. If it does not work, you may have something else.

Please keep this computer offline except when downloading tools and posting in the forum until we get one installed. Let me know your intentions for an antivirus program.

It appears you didn't attach the first dds log, DDS.txt, to your initial post.

Press the Windows "logo" key and "R" key then copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

%temp%\dds.txt

A text file should open. Please post that file in your next reply.
