I have Windows 7 on my laptop and after I start it up and enter my password to login to windows I have to wait another 10-15 minutes for my desktop to appear. It's just a black screen, but the kicker is that I can move my mouse and see it on screen. I've never heard of or seen anything like this before.

Anyone know what's causing this or how to fix it?

A:Laptop stays at Black screen for 10+ mins after logging in

How old is the laptop? Is it still under warranty? What you are describing sounds like the LCD is going bad.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

It most certainly could be the PSU.

What is the 12V, 3.3V, 5V, and VCORE voltages within the BIOS?

I was having trouble installing a TV card, it wasn't showing up as an uninstalled device and the and running an installer gave a no support error. So I wanted to enter my bios to see if there was some PCIE setting screwing things up, but whenever I press delete on the loading screen it won't enter the bios instead it just stalls on the loading screen. I've tried multiple times it does it every time.

I'm running windows XP SP3 the MB is an ABIT IP35

A:computer freezes on loading screen when trying to enter bios

You can try resetting the CMOS jumper on the motherboard...then attempt to enter the BIOS.

You might also want to possibly consider replacing your CMOS battery. When it starts to weaken, the BIOS/system tends to act strangely, IME.

Whenever my laptop wakes up from sleep and shows the lock screen, I click and type in my PIN as normal. But on the lock screen at the top right, there's a Cortana box usually giving an example of what I can do, like 'tap and say remind me to water the plants when I get home'.

The problem is this box stays on the screen after the computer is unlocked, and displays semi-transparently in the top left over all other windows, with the only way to remove it is to double click, have a Cortana window display full screen and then close it.

I'd like to find a way of either fixing this or disabling Cortana from the lock screen altogether as I never use this feature. Any tips would be appreciated.

Heres the story... customer got bad viruses.. did clean up and removal of the infections and I noticed the laptop wasn't shutting down. (I cant confirm that this wasn't an issue before. I didn't notice it but doesn't mean it wasn't there) when you go to shut down the screen goes off but power on light stays on and fan stays on. Have to hold power button to shut it off

HP Model Pavilion 2000-2b29WM

Heres what I have done so far...

1. I did the refresh (the full format one) but still did it. I still have windows 8 didn't bother updating to 8.1 yet since that's what I had before I refreshed it
2. updated/flashed BIOS but didn't work. Reset BIOS to default
3. Turned off "Turn on fast startup (recommended)"
4. put in different HDD and loaded Windows 7 and when I went to shutdown it locks up at shutdown so still problem shutting down but screen stays on.
5. tried different RAM
6.Tried different power adapter.
7. tried holding SHIFT while shutting down
8. Resisted punching the laptop.

I don't know what else. I was confident that the viruses did it but maybe its a coincidence and its some hardware issue?? Thanks

I sucessfully completed building my computer. Fan finally works, but nothing on the screen appears (i was expecting the BIOS screen to appear). I double checked the cables, they're all in place. I tried disconecting everything but the CPU, CPU Fan, RAM, and video card, but the BIOS screen will not come up. What's up? Please help me! I spent a lot of money on this system and I of course want it to work!

Hi Guys,

Im having some problem with my Packard Bell EasyNote TJ61 - I powered it on and the fans whirred like normal and the lights on the keyboard came on like normal - the power button lit up. But the screen stayed black. Then the fans went silent after 5 seconds and it sounded like it was switched off but all the lights were still on - the power, hard drive and keyboard ones. I noticed if I run my finger over the touch pad buttons for volume etc they light up so im not sure whats wrong.

I replaced the screen on the laptop the other day and it was working fine until last night and this has happened. Any suggestions?

I've tried replacing ram / replacing hard drive / pulling the cmos battery for 30mins / unplugging and trying the 30 seconds power button trick but nothing.

Any suggestions?

A:Laptop Power On - Screen Stays Black - Fan Goes Off 5 Seconds

If you have a PC monitor connect it to the laptop and see if you get a display on it.

Also check the laptop screen for a dim image, shining a light onto it may make it more visible.

What was wrong that made you replace the screen ?

Hi, I turned on my computer today and it only loaded to the very first screen: the Asus A8N Sli Deluxe motherboard screen that says "press delete to enter setup". usually it continues to boot after this screen is displayed for a few seconds. The computer does not respond to pressing "delete" either to enter setup.

is there anyway to diagnose/fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

I have a friend away at school who called and said her computer won't start up. It is a Compaq . She gets the Compaq splash screen, with the F1 for setup, F10 for SystemRecovery, and it gets stuck there.

Pressing F1 on startup gets her "Entering Setup" and then it just sits there. Pressing F10 on startup does nothing at all.

The pc is not giving any beeps as they sometimes do when having a startup problem, nor is she hearing any odd sounds from the tower (hard drive clicking, etc).

Thoughts on what the cause for this sudden meltdown of her pc?

My computer will randomly just shut down comletely. It will just turn off, no shutdown process. Just desktop then black screen and everything off.
It doesnt matter what I am doing at the time it just happens sporadically. Stays on for a minute or two, or ten or a bit longer then just turns off again. Once today is was on for about 45 minutes and then bang off again. Been doing this for about a week. Already tried system restore. What should I do?

Thanks All!

Have you tried cleaning the inside? Dust can choke and cause this.

I got a new graphics card today (GTS 450) and I slotted it in, when I start it up the screen stays black, however, if I leave it for 20 seconds or so I can hear the windows start up sound.. I know my screen isnt gone because I've connected it to my laptop and it works fine. I have the Blue and White cable plugged in my monitor and my computer and still nothing, thanks.

A:Computer screen stays black

Do you get any signs of "life" (like the BIOS Info screen etc)
If so it's probably a driver issue (did you remove the old drivers before the switch) ?

If not, there are IMHO only 5 possibilities:
#1 The card wasn't seated properly -- reseat it
#2 The card draws more power than your PSU can handle -- get a better PSU
#3 you forgot to connect the extra power cable --connect it
#4 you bend one or more pins in the video cable -- replace
#5 The card is defective -- RMA

I recently bought a used computer from my work (a gateway). I'm sure they remove a lot of stuff before reselling them. When I hooked it up, it makes the music likes it's coming on, but the computer screen stays blank. It's like it's putting itself in sleep mode or something. I can't get to the control panel or anything. Does anyone know what is causing this? My place of business sold several of these, and I haven't heard of anyone else experiencing problems. Is it possible I need to run some kind of disc if they removed something vital? Thanks for any help.

My screen seems to have a loose connection. It turns off when tilted back. Just a gentle touch to the back of it turns on again but then shuts off. I have to tilt it forward for it to remain on. The computer remains on, just the screen goes blank.

I have an Asus Eee PC that I got last year for my birthday. It has Windows 7 as the operating system. When I turn to computer on it seems to be working normal. When it comes time to log into a user profile and I click on the administrator profile (which is the one I use) and type in the password. The computer logs onto the profile but the screen stays completely black. I can still hear the computer running but the screen doesn't change. This has happened before but the toolbar was always visible at the bottom of the screen and now it's not. The only thing I can do with the screen black is type in Ctrl Alt and Delete to get the menu. Nothing on the menu seems to be helping with the issue.
I decided that I better see if the same thing was happening with my guest profile too. When I logged into my guest profile everything is working fine and that's what I'm on right now. However, the administrator profile has all my documents that I need for school and work so factory resetting or the possibly of wiping the computer isn't really an option.
Thank you for your time.

When I go to turn my computer on it can't get to the windows loading screen it just stops on a blank black screen. I have/will upload a video of it happening to illustrate what is happening since I might not have described it well.

I can't post videos due to my post count but if you want to see it just PM me.

The last thing I remember my computer doing before it turned off was a virus scan then a few minutes later a blue screen with some white writing coming up so I rebooted and this happened. I have tried using my Windows CD to repair it but it hasn't worked. I can't get into safe-mode because it just stops on the black screen with white writing (Sorry for all these un-techincal names xD).

I was wondering if anyone knew what was happening? Ideally i'm looking for a fix for this so I can back-up some of my files onto an external harddrive then I want to reformat.

Thanks, Ash

Got the computer from a family member, I tried fixing it for them first and I thought it was the video card so I tried a different one and still nothing. So it was unplugged and stored for months then they just gave it to me. Well I took it home and started messing with it turned it on a cple of times nothing. Moved wires around put different psu in nothing, put it back to normal it started right up powered screen up I got into windows but it had a lot of lag so I went to restart it so I could do a fresh install and screen shut off... note when it wasn't working before this point the cpu fan ran at full rpm when turned on but slowed down when it worked this first time. I turned it on and off cple times nothing unplugged psuand back in it worked enough to reinstall windows and went to restart nothing. When plugged my speakers in to see if it beeps it started up! Its toying with me, restarted it again nothing so next try I pushed on the cpu thinking the mobo was bad it started up and woked for a cple restarts and quit... I tightened. The mobo screws down to the case and worked for awhile and then started acting up on restart. It will turn on once after it sits awhile unplugged with the bios battery out. I'm confused... bad bios or the mobo? I have unplugged all things that aren't needed for start up different hd with same effect. Only thing I haven't tried yet is the ram. A:computer turns on but screen stays black

The PSU was probably bad, replacing it should have fixed it. There may be bad caps on the motherboard or something is grounding on the MOBO to the case and causing it to not boot. Take everything apart. Take Heat Sync off of processor and apply Thermal Paste. Take MOBO out of case and check to see if there are any burn marks, bad caps, or if there are any risers missing off the case keeping the MOBO from touching the case.

What happens is the screen goes black and I get a "no signal" for a split second then it just goes back to black. When this happens the fan gets loud. The computer doesn't turn off or anything, it just stays loud with a black display.
When it happens, I turn it off and turn it back on and it'll work for a while.

This happened about 3 times

1st time: Looking at steam sales
2nd time: Looking at steam sales (15 min after the 1st time)

then a 3rd time about an hour later after watching some videos (without steam opened because up to this point it only happened with it opened so i didn't open it). this time I had a video opened while I opened a game and it happened instantly as I double clicked the game.

I turned it back on and opened the game to test it, and it didn't happen like it did before.

The temperatures seem to be nowhere near high.
I'm assuming it's a video card problem?

Could it be anything else?

A:Screen blacks out randomly but computer stays on

I would certainly start with the video card. Check to see if it is working properly. You could check for updates for your driver and there is a possibility that it just may need replaced but start there and remember to write back as to what happened.

If I let the computer sit unused, the screen goes black, as most monitors would; however, the screen stays dark when I move the mouse or hit buttons or something. Similarly, if I close the lid of my laptop when its turned on, and then open the lid, the screen stays black. Not only that, but when I closed the lid of the laptop, the computer never turned off. It was still running.

I reset the power options to default as well, so there is nothing wrong there.

Perhaps I should also mention that the screen successfully turns off and on in safe mode?

I've been having this problem for a couple of weeks now. When I turn on my computer it loads up to the black screen with the windows logo and the loading bar with the scroll across green thing. It will just stay on that screen until i turn it off. If i turn it off and turn it on again it will bring me to the screen that allows you to choose safe mode and other options. It will load on safe mode but if i try to turn it on again without safe mode it gets stuck on the screen. So I do a system restore and choose a few days back and the system restores and i can startup my computer just fine. However everytime i shutdown my computer it has the same problem of not getting past that screen. What can i do?? Thanks for your help.

Hello everybody, today my laptop has become blind. Let me explain:

My laptop was purchased in 2007
Alienware m9750
Dual nvidia 7950 go
Dual core 2.0
2 gigs of ram
80 gb harddrive

So here's what happened, today I was watch s movie on netflix when suddenly my screen goes black. Though I had crashed but my laptop was still on and the sound was still going. restarted, and the initial screen was slightly pixellated and garbled. Which has now made my laptop permanent garbled and pixely. After the windows logo. My screen goes black, but I am still hear the windows start up sound. I found that I am able to click on some music files on my desktop that are able to play, so this is a video issue. I reboot in safe mode which works this time figure to disable and uninstall the videocard drivers. I restart and I'm able to use my pc somewhat normally( still garbled). Reinstalled the nvidia drivers then halfway through says: error install failed or something, it happen really fast then crashed, tried restarting atleast 20 times in safe mode but it freezes up after it tries to load partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

All of the other options for start up(even last settings to work) the screen goes black after the windows logo. I have tried tinkering with the bios but it doesn't help. Its basically being blind using a computer. So I'm wondering if there is anyway to possibly blindly open up command prompt and possibly disable or uninstall the drivers from there, I'm ab... I did an upgrade from Win 7 , and Screen Saver / Turn off display after 5 mins was working under Win 7 64 bit
As my title suggest Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins are not working under Win 10
The Lock screen Slideshow is there when Win 10 starts but only shows ONE image, never moves to another.
THINGS I've done so far to get any of these working ...Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins
I’ve turned off all the Wake on lan functions
Tried different folder/ images for the lockscreen Slideshow ,window spotlight and picture
Tried to set new power options , was able to get SLEEP to show up in "Start" as it was not there before, but once click , the display DID turn off, but wouldn’t turn back on with mouse movement keyboard presses, had to do a hard reboot. Win 10 started without issue and the SLEEP mode was no longer aviable via the power "start" menu.
Anyone have a clue how to get all of these working. Really would like my display to turn off after 5 mins , and the Screen saver to work , the Lockscreen I'm not fussed about

Computer: Not with the computer in question now, but here are some general specs. Running Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium on a pretty cheap desktop Emachine T series 3626 which came with 1g of ram and 150g of free space.

Issue: After loading bios, booting from hdd, computer loses power during vista loading screen. After 4-5 tries computer does boot successfully but can lose power again at any time with no obvious reasons as to why. Computer won't even boot in safe mode.

*Note. If the computer had been running recently however, the first boot attempt is usually successful.

I have been dealing with this problem for about a month and a half now. It seemed to pop up just after I made some changes to startup config., I copied Reason 4.0 (music production program) and World of Warcraft to my 500 gig external hard drive and have ran both those programs from either my internal HDD or external HDD and also save data on both. I may have changed bios/cmos during that time but it's unlikely. About a 6 months ago I overclocked my computer, and a year ago I installed an extra 500mb of ram. Also my tower tipped over about 2 months ago while it was running but the hit wasn't hard and the computer kept running normally. I wish I could tell you exactly when this issue started and whether or not it was before or after the changes I have made in the past month and a half but I can't remember. Anyways I've tired all sorts of solutions. Here is what I can remember doing.

I am attempting to remove a virus from a friend's toshiba a505-s69803 laptop.. in the transportation process i spilt a bit of water on the laptop but i do not think it effected the computer, because i was able to use the computer for days afterwards.. while trying to remove the virus in safe mode the computer would not let me run any anti-malware programs, and then subsequently shut down... now, when i try to start up the computer the keyboard lights turn on and the disc drives and fans begin working, but the screen remains blank... there are no signal beeps to indicate a hardware malfunction, and the three of the five lights on the front of the laptop (3 on the left side) are on... ive tried all the troubleshooting techniques on the forums, i.e. removing the battery and running on ac power, and vice versa, holding down the power button for 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, and 2 mins, all to no avail.. another computer savvy friend of mine said that some of these new viruses are smart enough to write itself to the bios which would prevent the computer from starting up... he recommended flashing the bios, but i do not know how to do so on a black screen, or if it might have been the water damage that may be causing a hardware problem (im thinking motherboad or video card if so)... any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

A:Laptop will start up but screen stays black, not a computer amateur but need help!

These new viruses are truly evil... and wide spread. We have had over 30 cases since Wednesday... all doing what you describe.

But the Toshiba is also infamous for having the screen inverter go bad... cheap to replace but darn difficult to get at quickly.

Can you connect an external monitor to the VGA port on the back of the Toshiba to see what you get there?

If i put the graphics card in the top slot (16x) LEDs light up and fans start running , i hear the windows 7 welcome screen sound through the speakers but the screen stays black, but if i put the card in the bottom slot (4x) everything works, besides the fact that the graphics card is slow as hell.
Both PCI power cables plugged into it, i tried removing all drivers, resetting cmos.

Beeps heard vary each switch on but are either:
1)Duh Duh Duh , Du Do
2)Duh Duh Duh ,du du du du du du du (rapid constant tone)
3) No beeps

Prior to this problem
my PC case did seem hot but Musketeer device said 50 degrees C. Windows XP was experiencing more frequent problems on bootup recommending scandisk much of the time, TV card seemed troublesome.

My efforts
I have opened up and had a quick look and all seems to be secure (except 1 of 4 very thin wires to the speaker ports.)
I haven't found or smelt signs of burning.

Any suggestions welcome, preferably with recommended sequence of attack for willing but novice PC surgeon!! Thanks

A:Power but No BIOS & blank screen

Sounds to me like your power supply, or possibly the mains (though I doubt it) had a power surge and blew your motherboard. Happened to me a couple of weeks back, my housemate a month ago and a family friend not long ago either! There was no smoke or burning smell either.

This would also explain no BIOS, and Windows becoming unstable before the event, because irregular power levels were being fed to your system.
If the psu has started surging, it would explain why the fans, drives etc are still working - power is still reaching them.

If it had been the RAM going, you would still get a POST / BIOS.
I doubt that the TV card has anything to do with it.
The only thing that confuses me is that you get beeping at all....

Not sure what you mean by "musketeer device", but 50 degrees is fine for cpu temp, and probably for case temp too.

If it was a psu surge, you will probably need to replace the motherboard, and I would strongly recommend buying a high quality psu (remember, high wattage rating doesn't always equal quality!) from reputable brands such as Antec or Enermax. Your psu has probably started becoming unreliable, and you don't want a replacement motherboard to go the same way! Additionally, you might invest in a mains surge protector.

Someone else might know different, or have a solution that doesn't involve buying a new mobo/psu....

Hello tech,
It's easter, so I realise some helpers might be away and help might be a bit slow as well as answers from me until Tuesday, lol.

I got a problem, driving me up the wall for four days now.
I use a developer program to make executables (hobby of mine saves me going troppo) called Clarion, it works OK, I made a DOSable program with it, it works OK.

Once I could open to full size DOS screen by pressing the Alt+Enter keys and it would stay open until I was finished with it, then I could revert back to a small screen by pressing Alt+Enter keys again.

Now if I press Alt+Enter keys the DOS screen appears, but it stays open in full screen for a couple of seconds then automatically closes back to the usual small screen.

I have tried right clicking on the icon, properties, screen and putting a dot in the full size option, but this does not work.

I have scanned my PC for viruses etc but no joy there.
I have Dialup only, so don't ask me to do a Panda or Trend scan as they drop you if you no got broadband.

I'm using XP pro, 512meg ram, using a Gigabyte MB, and Nivida video card.
XP working OK-dokie, sound ok-dokie, video ok-dokie, screen to DOS wonkie.
OK what do I do now

A:I press Alt+Enter DOS screen.opens 2 full screen then go small in a couple of seconds

I'm having a problem with BF2 where the game will crash with a
"BF2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."
error, right after the logo screen. The game doesn't enter full screen mode.

The first time I saw this error was when I was playing around with BattleRecorder (BF2's own recording engine), and I tried to launch a movie in BattleLauncher. This throws the error described above and I can't run BF2 again without getting the error until the computer is RESTARTED (no logoff and back on). I searched for a way to make Battlerecorder work and I gave up. But, the problem now seems to occur when Battlefield 2 is run for a second time. For example, if I turn on the computer, run BF2, play, close BF2, and try to play again without a restart, it crashes. I tried multiple things to fix this problem, and I eventually ended up downgrading my nvidia drivers to 84.21 (i was running 84.25 beta).

I THOUGHT this fixed the problem, but I must have only tried to open the game once when I went and downgraded the drivers, because it still happens. The only things I have installed recently are xfire, and I remember that that program threw me the error whenever I clicked somewhere inside the program to launch BF2 (xfire has a feature to launch bf2 for you so you can play with a friend). I suppose I should uninstall xfire... I'll try that now.

Hi there,

I developed a problem with my desktop pc yesterday. I was gaming and the screen began to flicker then the game crashed - citing "rendering device lost". I tried to re-load this again and the same thing happened again, this time with a BSOD. I tried a different game and the same thing occured, took slightly longer though. Given it was late I went to bed.

Today on loading up the sign in screen was flickering lots, I entered my password and was met by a black screen. The computer continued to make fan noises as if it was working, but nothing on my screen. This happened again. On restaring my computer the crash report read

I've looked at the bug dump, but I was silly and did a system restore before this, so there's no bug dump.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 8100 with Windows XP. Whenever I start up my computer, it goes through the Dell and Windows XP loading stuff, then it says "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistancy", etc. But if I let it disk check or just skip it, a blue screen flashes for about a second, and the only things I can catch are "system32" and "Physical Dump".

It then restarts and goes to the screen where you can run in the various safe modes, last known good configuration, or start normally. If I choose any of the safe modes, it starts to load them, but freezes. If I choose last known good configuration or start normally, it'll repeat the whole process. Does anyone know what's going on?

So to start off this is my first post, I use this site a lot; its fantastic. And secondly I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this problem or if anyone else might know. I can only assume one person out there might know what the issue is.

So basically when I turn my computer on, it will power off without any warning within a minute or two. Very frustrating.

1. My fan stopped spinning as fast as it should. dropped down to below 800 RPM
2. My CHIP fan for the northbridge stopped spinning so I replaced it with a Zalman Heat-Sink..just now actually.
3. I replaced the fan and now the new one spins faster..though it wont go above 1200 RPM
4.I tried pulling out the DVD drive thinking that there might not be enough power going to everything. but my PSU is 500 watt and should be fine..
It will shut off whether im in the BIOS or Windows. and the temperature seems to be fine around 30-40 degrees celcius.

I don't know what else to say. but I think it could be a problem with the motherboard...or the power supply...

Thanks for taking the time to read this I appreciate any help here. I need my computer back so I can actually keep studying.

A:Computer problem: will power off within a few mins

Pestilent -

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the kind words.

I've only got a minute right now, I'll have some time later today, but maybe we can start looking at/for some stuff so the other folks here can chime in.

Does it make any beeping noises before it powers off?
What version of the BIOS does it have?
Can you recall anything you changed between when it didn't do this and now?

Hang in there - we'll find a solution...

Ok, I have had this happen on two of my computers now.

When I turn on my computer it sounds like it powers on, the fans turn on the green light on the motherboard comes on saying it has power, it Sounds like the HDD turns on and starts running. Ive taken out the Graphics card and plugged the cord into the onboard video, still nothing, ive reset the graphics card, tried putting in only one stick of ram, with each one, (i have 4 sticks 4 1GB) still didnt work, reset CMOS, reset processor, also normally before the monitor stops working either the audio or the onboard LAN stops working, im not sure if its because one of the motherboard screws i use is plastic maybe not giving a good ground.

if u have any further questions let me know, ive tried almost everything but if you think of something it could be let me know, i sent in the motherboard, thank god for warranties, but i really dont want this to happen to my new motherboard. so any help would be appreciated

I don't know the motherboard or the case designs ( maybe someone else will )
The green light is for the RAM it is on a different power rail ( and Voltage ) to the Mainboard rail.
Things to check when the new MoBo arrives before you power the unit ON
< The clearance underneath the MoBo ( with all the components attached ) between it and the case. It needs to be a positive gap try for at least four post-it-notes wide, more if the fans vibrate the board
< That the fasteners that do get used for earthing the MoBo to the case are tested with an resistance metre ( 0.00 ohms )
< That the fasteners that do not get used for earthing the MoBo are insulated against this happening

I have a buddy that gave me a call yesterday about his computer only staying connected to his DSL for 5 minutes at a time. Before I could call him back he had a technician from his ISP come out and swap out the modem. The tech also went through his PPPoe settings and made sure they were correct. The tech also had his own notebook computer with him and worked with no problems for him. He told my buddy that it's a virus and left.

I got there and here is what I tried: (not in order)

Uninstalled his NIC card/Reinstalled
Ran through his PPPoe username and settings
Ran CCleaner
Scanned for virus(using AVG)/spyware (Malwarebytes, Spybot SD) Nothing!
ipconfig /release /renew
checked out the hosts file
Ran HJT (didn't see anything unusually)
Now, I really don't use Vista (really ever). I'm not going to start bashing it, but I don't really care for it. I know my way around XP quite well. Any "secret" Vista tools out there that might help me out?

I'm trying to fix my mother's computer and am at a loss. When she turned it on this morning, it kept shutting off before Windows could load. So I picked it up, but can't figure out what's wrong with it. I don't have a clue what to do in BIOS but thought I'd make sure the boot up thing was right (C drive) but couldn't even find that.

When I turn it on it seems to go directly to the screen where you choose which start up mode you want-normal, safe, safe with networking, last configuration that worked. If I choose normal, it shuts off immediately. If I choose safe/ safe with networking, I get the screen with line after line of white letters and numbers but only for a few seconds, then it shuts off. I can't remember how fast it shut off when I chose last configuration that worked, but it wasn't long. I was kind of surprised when it stayed on in BIOS.

I know she's been using it in safe mode the past few days, and I'm sure it's because of some computer virus. I'm also fairly sure she's mentioned that sometimes she's had to try more than once to get it to safe mode (hasn't been starting normally for her). I've been trying to get her to let me pick the computer up so I could see what's wrong but until this, she wouldn't let me.

Does this sound like an expensive or hard to fix problem? Something that someone with a little computer knowledge could fix? Thank you for any help!

I'm having a problem with my computer monitor. It used to be okay but somehow the computer monitor power button is not green now, instead it's yellow, therefore there's nothing on the screen. I checked the power cable and connection to the cpu and it seems alright. I also shut down the computer and monitor and waited for a minute, the computer booted fine but when I turned on the monitor power button, it was green for a few seconds and then turned yellow.

Can somebody tell me what seems to be the problem with my monitor? And how would you suggest to fix it?
Thank you much.

A:Computer Monitor Power Button Stays Yellow

Check the cable from the monitor to the video adapter at the back of the case. Then you'll need to try another monitor. If it works the problem is inside the case. Making sure your video card if you have one is secure or trying another one would be next.

Having everything(sic) connected, my new 'puter powers up, runs without complaint(left it on for five minutes or so, and manually shut it back off), but nothing comes to my moniter(ie: it stays orange/yellowish in sleep mode, instead of green for an active connection).
There are also no beep codes.

The only other thing that I've read about was the 12v rail needing ample ampage(20+). My 450 Antec allows for 15a on +12V1 and 17a on +12V2.

A:New computer build powers up/stays on, but no display/post/bios

Looks like you'll have a real nice system once you get it up and running!

Couple of questions:

1. Do you have both of the power connections to the motherboard? There should be two, the 24 pin and the 4pin.
2. Do you have the power connection going to your graphics card? Most newer cards (but not all) require a 4pin molex connection from the PSU directly to the card.
3. Did you hook up the case's speaker? It would have been one of those tiny annoying to connect wires (assuming your case has a speaker - they are very small and hard to find). If your case has a speaker, this is very useful. The beep codes may tell us what is wrong.
4. Did you use the riser pins into the case's screwholes (under your motherboard) before you installed the motherboard into your case? (some cases have the riser pins pre-installed for you, some don't).
5. What speed ram are you trying to use? Do you have a different make of ram you can test in there?

Also, take a look at the LED lights on the motherboard and see what color they are both before and after you hit the power button.

I have had a recurring problem for months on my HP desktop. Often when I walk away from my computer (and occasionally while i'm sitting there using the darn thing!), I'll come back a while later and my monitor will have gone black and does not come back when I move my mouse or anything else i've tried. I end up having to shut down using the button on my CPU in order to restart and get my screen image back. Is there an easy way to prevent this and/or an easy way to get my screen image back without shutting down the whole kit and kaboodle? thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there. Recently upgraded to Windows 8.1. I have been experimenting with changing the Lock Screen. I know how to change it manually. The point is, I put the setting to 'Play slide show'. I even told the system to use a picture folder. Maybe I am misunderstanding. I was expecting the lock screen to be different each time. But no change. I even installed Lock Pic. But I noticed it's working with the actual windows settings. It just gives me a different choice of pictures. So what am I doing wrong?

A:Lock Screen stays the same.

Hello gallicbear,

In Windows 8 and 8.1 there are two "Lock" screens. One is set by the user that is displayed only when they are signed in. The other is the default Lock screen image that is displayed when there are no users signed in.

The lock screen slide show only works on your lock screen when you are still signed in, and not the default one.

Hi steveicw

Just guessing here but it sounds like the LCD screen isn't working. Basically you are getting the backlight on with nothing in front to change the display. Is there anywhere on the laptop that you can plug in a external monitor and see if the system is booting? I had one laptop like this where the external display worked fine but the screen was all white. Replacing the display fixed the problem. Laptops are expensive and hard to fix. You may need to take it to a repair shop. BOL

Hi, The usual advice is to choose the "Last Known Good Configuration" to boot to, when you try to start up, use the F8 key to get to the Advanced startup menu (in the list where you would usually pick Safe MOde) and select that line with your up/down arrow key, and press Enter. If that does not work, you should have System Restore to try. Sounds like neither is going to work for you, but you can try.

Just shutting everything down will sometimes help, if you leave it off and unplugged for 10 minutes or so, I mean the main power cord so no power is available to the motherboard or power supply.

Sometimes, just restarting a few times will help. Could be you picked some malware up, too, and restarting then can make it worse. So, you are at some risk and should try to rescue any really important files if there are any. When things go bad, there can be as few as one or two good starts to Safe Mode or normal before you are really crashed and can't do any backing up data.....

Is everything plugged in OK, what I mean is, did you perhaps shut down and move any cables or plugs or open the case to look at something?

Let us know if anything you try works or not.

And> Do you have the install disks for the computer handy in case you need to use them?

Running a chkdsk from the Recovery Console is one thing you can try after you try the above.
You need the XP installation CD, or one provided with the computer like the Dell or other manufacturer CD with XP on it. (U... Read more

It's a Toshiba Satellite and it comes with a recovery disc, but after it finish loading the disc, nothing happens but black screen and a mouse pointer. I also tried to reinstall everything from that recovery disc but can't...(also tried to hold down C key when laptop is powering up to reformat). Hi! New to the forum, so please let me know if there's a better place to ask this question.

I have a desktop that I recently set up (a couple of months ago now), and when I flash it up, the screen doesn't power on. The screen is Dynex, built I think mostly as a TV. It has an automatic power down without input. What I would really like is a screen that powers up when the computer input starts, and then powers down with the computer when I shutdown (the powering down isn't as key--a thirty second countdown when there's no input would be fine). It's a little fiddly thing, but I have a dual boot set up, and I need to stop missing the operating system selection screen because the screen doesn't power on until I manually press the power.

It seems to be a problem unique to my desktop, because when I hook this screen up to my laptop, it powers on automatically. I've tried switching the cord around from motherboard to both of my two graphics card inputs, but no dice.

If anyone on here has any insight into what might be the issue, I'd love to hear from you! Thanks!

If it seems to be exactly every ten minutes of inactivity (no mouse or no keyboard input), then I would check the Power Settings.

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Options and check the Turn off monitor (and other) settings.

If it is exactly ten minutes and set to After 10 mintues, change it to After 20 minutes or Never and see if that makes a difference.

Also right click some empty place on the desktop, Properties, Screen Save - what is that time set to?

I have read MANY threads of computers rebooting themselves and yet to find a solution to my problem.

As with other threads, my computer will reboot on it's own. Prior to this happening, I made no hardware or driver changes sense the previous week. Everything was running fine and out of no where it just started rebooting. First after about 5 minutes, then 3 minutes, then it wouldn't even boot up XP before it would reboot, then it would just cycle thru the reboot beep untill i shut the computer off at the power supply. When you turned it back on, it may get to the windows desktop, but only if you're lucky. I even booted into the BIOS setup screen and it rebooted there too!!!

I tried everything that I read in the other threads, unplugged everything except the video card, CPU and memory, then swapped out each the video card, CPU, memory, power supply, and motherboard individually and nothing helped. I then took all the individual hardware components that I swapped into the new machine and built a sepperate computer with them, attached a new hard drive, and installed windows and have no problems. So it's not the individual hardware components, it's not the battery in the mobo, it's not overheating...........

By process of elimination, that makes me think it's software related, but if so, how come it will reboot before it even makes it to the OS??????

I then did a disk clean up, after that I scheduled a disk check and restarted the computer. Upon restarting the computer will not go past the bios screen.

I tried F8 to put it in safe mode so I could reverse the disk check. I selected safe mode hit enter then the same thing, bios screen then black. Tried F8 again and this time I tried a restore it started to restore then it shut down mid way with an error. The error was " the instruction at 0x7444060a referenced memory at 0x00000000 the memory could not be read" After that I tried F8 again and tried a memory test and it went until about 53% and shut off again. This time with no error message.

I am not sure if this is by coincidence or if I caused this. I don't think i caused this to happen because I do this maintenance on my families computers all the time with no problems.

She also had a similar problem about six months ago after a few attempts and holding down the start button for 30 seconds it has worked fine until yesterday.

So yesterday, I was on my Dell computer and when I go to click the orange X to exit or "-" to minimize the internet window, the window stopps running because the little internet tab on the bottom across that blue bar goes away but the screen display stays up and it is frozen, the computer itself isn't frozen because you can click the lower left "Start" button and open another window and it goes right to the homepage just fine. It is almost like the background desktop, without the icons and you can't left click. I didn't know what to do so I panicked and hit the "Q" and restarted it but the problem stays. It doesn't seem to run any slower or anything like that but I did notice a pop-up came up that said Adobe ShockPlayer or ShockWave or something like that that I could either "download now" or "remind me later" it looked a little phony and I just clicked remind me later. It only does this on one of the users for the initial sign in for Windows.

I own a Toshiba laptop. In the past week, everytime I've turned it on, it first goes to a black screen with an underscore blinking in the upper lefthand corner. Then it goes completely black. Then it goes to the XP loading screen, but stays on that for over an hour until I decide to turn it off by holding down the power button. What can I do to get my laptop to work? Thanks.

A:Laptop stays on XP loading screen

Immediately after Power On, start tapping the "F8" button once per second until you get to the Safe Mode Menu screen.

Then select "Use Last Known Good Configuration". Report results.

If this fails, do this again, and try to get into basic "Safe Mode", and report results.

I just got a Dell Studio 15 with Vista Home (32bit) and have noticed that if I leave the computer open until it sleeps, I can't get it to wake up unless I close and re-open the lid. As far as I know, all the default settings are still set regarding power, sleep/hibernate, etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a setting I can change to work around this?

- Bill

hello, this is ecobill. i am new in the neighborhood. I know a little about computers (enough to be dangerous); so, I need help once in while. Whenever I have trouble it is never the normal problems.
Because I lost the printer drivers and USB drivers on my present computer when I updated to XP Service pack 2 and I have been able to install them from any locaton.

I have received a used, but more updated computer. I was told it worked, but there was no rack for the hard drives that matched the screw holes. I adapted an old rack and when I turn on the power with the monitor attached, there is nothing but a black screen. The power supply appears Ok, because some of the lights come on; the hard drive is running; and the fans come on the motherboard and video card. The monitor is OK because I used it on another older computer. Also when I just unplug the monitor from the video card, the screen comes on. I tried another older video card in one of the shorter card slots, but it did work either.
Any ideas out there? Thanks

I don't know how to reset the cmos unless you mean to pull the battery. I don't know about the BIOS bus for the video (I can't see any BIOS) settings. I removed the original AGP video card that I thought might be a problem and I put an older working video card (Trident) in another PCI slot and this made no difference. I pulled the RAM chips to clean the connections and reset all cables. I disconnected the CD drive, the floppy drive, and later the hard drive after checking each situation indiviudally, but this made no difference.

Another problem (may be related) is the on-off switch does not control anything. I have to use the toggle switch in the back. I checked the wire connection from the switch to the motherboard (Intel D845BG) and it looked OK.

YouTube Buffers but will not play
Youtube vids worked last year. Then they only worked each time I logged on. Now they show the loading screen and I hear bytes but when they get to the end, they won't replay. They just start buffering again.
I removed and reinstalled Adobe Flash. I cleared Internet Explorer cookies, browsing history, and temp files. Removed Quicktime. Youtubes still go to loading screen only.

what was the result with the ps/2 mouse and the usb mouse? if they all do not work correctly there's something going on with the operating system itself.

Hey so I recently installed Windows 7 on a family members computer and it is taking a long time to boot into windows. Its hanging on part where its got the animated windows logo for like 10+ minutes. I did notice that after installing the OS it flashed a error about SAM and I'm thinking i may have to do a repair install from the disk but that is going to be fun as well as i have tried many ways to make the computer boot into the disk but had to load the previous OS (XP) and start the install from there. I have tried using a Bootable USB drive as well and it didn't work either. It only seems to be windows 7 disks that it doesn't like to load in that manner, i can load Ubunto from disk as well as memtest.

Before i installed the OS i made sure the system could handle 7 as i ran the windows 7 upgrade advisor on it and the only area that it failed at the time of the test was free space on the partition but uninstalled a few programs and fixed that issue.

Installed 7 on the computer because the family member was wanting to play a game that required DX10 and XP only supports up to DX9

computer specs are as follows:
Gigabyte G31m-es2l
Intel Celeron E3300 dual core @ 2.5 GHz
3GB DDR2 ram
running Win 7 Ultimate
EVGA NVidia GT 620

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Ok so about a month back my lcd just stopped working. It has a lit background but it stays black. I called hp and they had me do some troubleshooting but it didn't work and they said my display was no good anymore so we left it there (I didnt want to pay all that money to fix it). About 3 days after that it magically worked again but one day it seemed like it was trying to go out again the picture got real grainy for a second then it went back to normal. Now I'm back where I started. I've tried everything, when I hook up an external monitor it works so it has so be lcd related. Any help/advice??

After the screensaver automatically turns off the display (after 20 minutes), the screen STAYS black, no matter what I do it won't turn back on. I have pressed buttons on the keyboard, mouse, and turned the display on and off. I have to hard reset my computer... it sucks man! What is going on? I looked in the power options and sleep is on 'never' and turn off hard disk is on 'never'. I was looking for hypernation, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I deleted my hybernation files a while back because they were taking up space and I never had used it.

This has just started fairly recent, when I got my new video card (eVGA 9800GTX+ 512MB) it started doing it, but that is around the same time I deleted my hybernation files, that is why I suspect it, but I can't find anywhere to enable or disable it. I checked in power settings under advanced and it isn't there.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

What's going on? I need help, this is driving me nuts, I am hard resetting my computer almost every day because of this. I don't want to shut off automatic display shutoff because my Acer X191W monitor gets hot and I like it to cool down when the screen gets shut off. (In the past I had this same model of monitor burn up on me, don't know why, but I suspect heat. This thing gets really warm after a couple hours. They sent me a new one for free then, but my warranty is up now.)

Help please,

A:Screen stays black after screensaver

I would have to agree that deleting your hybernation files is probably the cause. Since they are only needed if you allow your computer to hibernate, there must be another step to shutting it off. It does seem like you checked the right places though. I would assume it would be in your power settings.

You might want to check you BIOS though. If it's disabled there, I'd think you'd be ok.
