Internet Explorer Shuts Down Immediately

Q: Internet Explorer Shuts Down Immediately

Been having trouble with a Windows XP Service Pack 3 machine using the internet, specifically Internet Explorer. IE8 opens but then shuts down immediately with an error message saying that Internet Explorer must be shut down. Was getting this yesterday on repeated attempts. For some reason tonight IE actually opened, I then tried to install Firefox (which had been blown out of the machine somehow) and get the error "Your current security settings do not allow this to be downloaded."Machine is also running much slower than normal. AVG is up to date and hasn't found any viruses, although a tracking cookie alert popped up tonight and I clicked Move To Vault. Firewall is enabled. Not sure if there is anti-spyware running on this, other than AVG. Helping a friend with this problem. Thanks in advance for your help.DDS.txt log:DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Doug at 16:55:42.34 on Thu 08/05/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_11Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.503.198 [GMT -5:00]AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}FW: McAfee Personal Firewall Plus *disabled* {94894B63-8C7F-4050-BDA4-813CA00DA3E8}============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcssvchost.exesvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\wltrysvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\bcmwltry.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEsvchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exeC:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exeC:\Program Files\Dell\NICCONFIGSVC\NICCONFIGSVC.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k imgsvcC:\WINDOWS\stsystra.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\WLTRAY.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exeC:\Program Files\Dell Photo AIO Printer 924\dlccmon.exeC:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exeC:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\Program Files\FinePixViewer\QuickDCF2.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgemc.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exeC:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.3\program\soffice.exeC:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.3\program\soffice.BINC:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgcsrvx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\dlcccoms.exeC:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgnsx.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exeE:\dds.scr============== Pseudo HJT Report ===============uStart Page = hxxp://www.ask.com?o=1607uSearch Bar = hxxp://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/dellsidebar.jsp?p=DEuInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.localuURLSearchHooks: N/A: {4d25f926-b9fe-4682-bf72-8ab8210d6d75} - Hi vw412fan,Welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is mpascal, and I will be helping you fix your problem. Before we begin, I would like give a few guidelines so that we can fix your problem as quickly and efficiently as possible:Be sure to follow all my instructions carefully! If there is anything you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask. Please do not do anything or perform other steps unless I have asked you to do so.Please make sure you post all logs I ask you to, and make sure that the entire log gets posted.Don't attach any logs unless asked. Posting them in the forums will make them easier to analyze. If you are unsure of how to reply, or need help with anything regarding the website, please look here.We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.Upon completing the steps below I will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.STEP 1 - MBAMNote: In the event that you already have MBAM installed, you do not need to reinstall it. Simply Updating it and doing a Quickscan is sufficient. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.STEP 2 - GMERPlease download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:Main MirrorThis version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)Zipped MirrorThis version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning.STEP 3 - OTLDownload OTL to your desktop.Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted. When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output. In the Custom Scans box, copy and paste the following:CODEnetsvcs%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*%systemroot%\Fonts\*.com%systemroot%\Fonts\*.dll%systemroot%\Fonts\*.ini%systemroot%\Fonts\*.ini2%systemroot%\Fonts\*.exe%systemroot%\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.*%systemroot%\REPAIR\*.bak1%systemroot%\REPAIR\*.ini%systemroot%\system32\*.jpg%systemroot%\*.jpg%systemroot%\*.png%systemroot%\*.scr%systemroot%\*._sy%APPDATA%\Adobe\Update\*.*%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Favorites\*.*%APPDATA%\Microsoft\*.*%PROGRAMFILES%\*.*%APPDATA%\Update\*.*%systemroot%\*. /mp /sCREATERESTOREPOINT%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav%PROGRAMFILES%\bak. /s%systemroot%\system32\bak. /s%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\*.lnk /x%systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile\*.dat /x%systemroot%\*.config%systemroot%\system32\*.dbHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AUHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rsClick the Run Scan button. Windows update updated my IE6 (working) to IE7. After this, when clicking the IE icon, the IE window would flash up and then close immediately. I then upgraded to IE8 and exactly the same problem. I have tried iexplore -extoff and reset to default in internet options. Still have the problem. Google Chrome and Mozilla work fine. My HijackThis log is attached:

In our office there is one site that we have to use Internet Explorer to access. This morning immediately upon start it crashed on two computers(I am unsure if they are related or not). So I have spent three hours trying to fix it and I am not stuck. It is IE 10 (or was) and it is Windows 7. Things I have tried:

1. Running with no addons.
2. Uninstalling then Reinstalling.
3. Doing an sfc scan to see if it was a missing system file.
4. Making sure all required and optional updates were installed.
5. One computer is used sparingly, there is nothing on it but the default programs but ran a virus scan anyway and it turned up nothing.
6. Reset all internet explorer settings.
7. Finally I installed the IE11 beta version and it does the exact same thing.

Having two different IE versions do the exact same thing makes me think it is a system issue and not an IE issue. Both Firefox and Chrome work with no issues.

Just wanted to add that it will start in safe mode with no problems

Just disabled DEP on IE

A:Internet Explorer immediately shuts down upon start

Maybe try running these tools: tool 1, tool 2.

If that doesnt help, I have a few more possible solutions. This is another one: Install IE 10 and make sure all Windows updates are installed (not just for IE, but for the OS).

If that doesnt work, tell me.

My Internet Explorer on my laptop will open, but then immediately closes itself down.

It won't stay open, no matter what I do.

Tried to run the virus scan, which removed 2 problems, but that didn't work.

I wanted to update my Norton Antivirus to see if that would find and solve the issue but since the updates are web-based, and my I/E won't stay open, I can't do that either.

Any suggestions?

Hey, I am having problems with my other computer suddenly closing both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer applications, such as Control Panel, My Computer, etc...(Windows XP Home Edition)
When i click on either one, lets say the my computer icon, a pop up of the my computer folder thing flashes for a split second then disappears, the computer freezes for about a second, shows only the desktop, then a few seconds later the icons start appearing on my desktop and my start taskbar comes back. The screen is back to normal with no lag, but the my computer pop up is no longer there. The same thing happens with internet explorer, but it just happens alot quicker.
Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem of this, and maybe how to fix it? Thank You in advance.

When i open the Internet Explorer, it will open then immediately close. I was able to pinpoint the problem at my home page (www.google.com). I opened IE again, stopped it quickly from opening the home page and then entered another web page. It worked. Then i went back to the home page and it closed again. So whenever i enter the home page the program will shut itself. I also use Firefox as web browser and it doesnt do the same thing. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello there,

My roomates Dell Dimension 2400 laptop , XP Pro, SP3,
Dual core Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40 Ghz
2.39 Ghz, 1.00 GB Ram

Is having trouble with Internet Explorer dissapearing immediately and Chrome won't come open and Firefox is slow in opening:(

Joyces brother did something that made her laptop only start in Safe mode.

Not sure all he did but he removed Malwarebytes and did microsoft update.

The Comodo Internet suite Firewall/antivirus is getting an error and won't run

I reinstalled Malwarebytes and ran it and it found a pesky virus I have dealt with alot before called 'My Web Search'. it infected 3 registry files. Whe I tried to run system restore it wouldnt work its earlies date to restor to was 2066!! lol.

Anyway I got it to start normally by runing MsConfig and puting a checkmark by "Start Normally and load all drivers etc." Instead of the "Selected start up option.

It started normally and was fine except for Internet explorer and chrome not working.

I un-installed in add and remove the listed Internet Explorer 7 and 8 in hopes that it would revert to a good copy of Internet explorer 6 like I have done before.

When I open Internet explorer it opens to a plain white window and just hangs there. In task manager it shows in the processes tab but not in the applications tab:( And when you minimize it on the taskbar it has the little "e" icon but does not say Internet explorer next to it on the taskbar:(

I am using ie7 and winxp on my computer and have recently had an issue with it. When I try to open explorer the window closes before it actually loads up. Bits of the taskbar keep turning grey as well like the old style windows.

I have tried removing all add ons and resetting internet settings but have had no luck. The connection is okay with other computers. On the problem computer the icons on the taskbar says it is there until I click on it when it disspears. I have tried downloading and running programmes like spybot on it (downloading them onto another disk and then transferring them onto the computer) but most seem to need to use the internet to run them. I cant use the web at all so solutions like installing ie6 dont seem possible either. I have ran hijack this here is the log. Any help would be most appreciated.

I have worked on a friends laptop
windows 7

internet explorer opens and shows the outline of the dialogue box and then the page closes

I have done the following

Trying to re-install - message , version already on PC

Rebooted at various stages throughout
- Went to Turn Windows Features On and Off and un-clicked Internet 9
- Installed updates - removed IE10 and IE11 updates
- Ran the MSFIX - Microsoft Fixit 50778.msi, finished OK
- Ran "Command" as admin - and tried this command

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"

This failed with access denied

- After removing the updates , i was then allowed to install IE11 which took a while to fully install after the full installation and a reboot.
Exactly the same error occur

IE opens with just the outline of the PAGE and then timer shows for a while, then screen closes.

I have left my friend to create the recovery DVDs and then once created to do a system restore back to December. I just wanted to make sure that if there was a problem with restore, she had a recovery option.

She knows this problem has been on the pc for a while, and shes not sure if before or after the oldest restore point of 19/12/13

She has a full subscription to Norton 360 on the PC

Hi All

I've got to the slitting wrists stage of this problem. I hope someone can help...

I've been getting the blue screen of death recently and upon checking my computer's error logs I found that it was a problem with my Radeon graphics card. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Radeon software but the audio went. I couldn't find the audio driver (long story) so I did a system restore which worked - everything was back to normal. Or so I thought.

Next morning I tried to open IE but upon opening it closed immediately. I've done a bit of research (ON THE INTERNET AT WORK!) and have done a HijackThis log.

It may be a coincidnece but the other day my screensaver changed - it's now a black screen which says Oxigenscr V5.00.0000. Maybe this is a virus. Thank you for your help in advance

Hi everyone, New to the forum so thanks for the help ahead of time. Upon opening internet explorer it immediately closes and displays nothing. Also Internet options in control panel will not open at all. The windows firewall also tells me "For your security, some settings are controlled by group policy." This computer is not on a network and is a home computer. I was able to work around it by doing some registry work in which I removed the value on the firewall key. So that enabled me to turn the firewall back on. The service for windows firewall is now started with no errors and is set to automatic.

The Internet explorer problem is more important to me at the moment. I know the internet connection is active because firefox works perfectly. I scanned the computer with AVG and it found so many viruses and trojans it was rediculous. I also scanned the computer with webroot spysweeper and it found nothing but when I open IE it stops all sorts of things like drivecleaner for example.

Hello everyone, im fairly new to this, so please bear with me.

Recently, ive been having trouble with my computer. It started one morning when i went to go check my email. My main browser is google chrome exe so naturally i go to click it. Which is when all this starts -_-. i double click on it, but the program doesnt open. I try to open it by left clicking and running as an admin but still no luck. I soon realize that this is the case for ALL of my programs except Internet explorer, which i find strange considering the similarities with the other browsers. Anyway, ive read previous similar problems on here, and i download Hijackthis. I have a log folder that i can post if needed. Also i see something when i try to open the program quicky enough but i cant make out what it is before it closes. There is also a suspicious search engine called searchqu.com406 that comes up as soon as i start internet explorer Keep in mind this doesnt happen in safe mode, and evrything works fine, just like the computer was regularly before. Ive tried multiple Malwarebytes scans, stinger, (which is still scanning after 25 mins) and AVG (which begins to scan, but then a command prompt comes up and stops it) all to no avail. Any help would greatly be appreciated Please and Thank You

I am so puzzled with this problem I have. I have Windows xp: Service Pack 3, and when I open Windows Internet Explorer 8, It turns white and closes almost immediately after I open it, or i'll open it and it'll turn white and stay like that for almost 10 minutes straight and do nothing. I tried resetting it in control panel, and it didn't help at all. Why doesn't it----referring to my browser;Windows Internet Explorer, work?

If IE works properly when you start it without add-ons then it's possible that you could have an infection, but try these two MS fixits in this order first -

Fix Internet Explorer issues to make IE fast, safe and stable

Fix Internet Explorer add-on problems when IE hangs or freezes

I'm building a pc and having several problems.

The first problem is that after I've assembled all the parts and turn on the power, the computer begins to boot and then simply shuts down. It does this repeatedly until I turn the power off.

The second problem is that the power and reset buttons on the front panel in my case don't seem to work. I have plugged in the cables to the right pins but nothing happens when I try to turn the pc on from the case buttons. I've had to use the power on button on the motherboard to try the setup (but with bad luck, as described above)

Here are the specs

Antec Nine Hundred
OCZ GameXtream 600W ATX
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB Serial-ATA
Abit IP35 Pro ATX LGA 775
ASUS EN8800GTS TOP/HTDP/512M PCI-E
Samsung SH-S203D/BEBN SATA 20X DVD+/-RW
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Kingston HyperX 2GB 1066MHZ DDR2 CL5

This probably isn't enough info to solve the problem, but I'm looking for any suggestions that might help me test out which part or cable is the cause of this.

My HP computer shuts off the minute you turn it on. I have reseated the memory, thinking they were loose, changed the supply cord several times and put in a new battery-still shuts off right as soon as you turn it on.
Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

A:computer shuts off immediately

In all probability the shut down is related to a failed internal component. Most times it is the fan, if it is jammed full of lint it probably is the issue, or it might have just failed completely. Using canned air or the like blow in from the side, if you see lots of lint fly out the bottom or stuff flopping about in there you will need to take it apart and clean it out. Failing that replace it. If that still does not fix the issue then there is a bigger problem, like a failed CPU or Main board

Hi

I switched from win 7 to win 10 about a month ago. No major problems until yesterday. The pc shuts down only a few minutes after loading windows. If i then turn it on again, it shuts down almost straight away - before it's even finished loading windows.

I tried resetting windows but it won't stay on long enough to do it. It got to 6% then shut down. I don't think it's a virus - well i have kaspersky anyway and that isn't reporting anything.

Unfortunately i can't get into safe mode on start up with win 10.

I'm at the point where i'm thinking i need to throw the pc away and buy a new one because it won't stay switched on for long enough to do anything.

Any ideas gratefully received thanks

Welcome to the forum. Normally this is due to heat or the CPU fan not working check the fan and remove any dust from inside the pc

Hello.

I have a 6 years old or so PC, which used to work all fine.

But one day when i had to move it to a new spot, it suddenly didn't want to start up...

I am really sure that this has to do with the Motherboard, as i have tried the following, but with no avail:

Replace with new Power Supply Unit
Taking out CPU and RAM (Tried combinations and such)
Removed all other power wires, so that only the Motherboard gets power.
Taking out all other unimportant parts
Tried to replace CPU fan, same prob.
I can't really give any specs, but if you need some, please post a reply, with the required spec and i will try find out...
EDIT: Found out that i had a 1.0Ghz AMD cpu and approx. 750mb ram...

Thanks
Jake

I see the red light for all of a second, like it's turning on when I press the power button, then nothing happens. No CPU fans or anything start during that 1 sec. Each subsequent time I press the power button NOTHING happens. If I unplug the machine and let it power cycle then it turns on for 1 second.

I was thinking it's the PSU going bad, this seem like the right thing. I have an extra one at home that I can try it with. Anyone else have any suggestions as to what it might be?

A:PC shuts off immediately after turned on

I would agree the ps is the most likely cause. One thing you want to stop right now is attempting to pw ON the system with a failed pw supply. It is highly likely that you will damage/destroy other parts of the system.

Swap in a known good pw supply and see if it works.

Hello all,

My homebuilt PC, which has worked fine for a couple of years, suddenly isn't working after I cleaned out the pounds of dust from inside it.

During POST process, the BIOS/RAID controller seems to identify the hard drives properly (I'm running two pairs of RAID-1 mirrored SATA drives) ...and I think it's not the drives anyway because of the last bullet-point below.

System goes through the BIOS part of the startup without problems but then either shuts down or reboots almost immediately:

* If I try to boot into windows, it shuts down after a couple seconds of the "blinking light" moving from left to right on the first Windows screen.

* If I try to boot into safe mode, it shows a long list of drivers on the screen, the last of which I believe is mup.sys, and then says at the bottom center, "press ESC to cancel loading VAX347B.sys", and then crashes. I doubt that VAX347B is the problem, however, because of the following:

* If I disconnect all hard drives from the system and boot from a Windows XP CD, it shuts down or reboots when screen says "Windows is inspecting your hardware configuration."

During the cleaning process, I removed the CPU fan, cleaned it and replaced it. Someone suggested to me that if it weren't back on exactly right, that could cause the problem so I took it off again and put it back on and the computer then worked...for two days...after which all the symptoms returned. Hi,

After slipstreaming SP3 for Windows XP into SP2 CD, i did a fresh install on a 1.2 GHz, 512MB RAM PC. It has 2 hard disks one with 20GB other 80GB(secondary, i added later). I had repartitioned the hard disk using Seagate Disk Manager bootable cd. The computer was previously running on Windows XP SP2 with no error at all.

After installing XP, When I tried to install IE7, it gave an error after restart saying IE7 cannot be installed. The strange thing is now, after every few minutes the system shuts down suddenly, as when happens on power failure. The hard disk LED glows continually after this happens. On the system reboot, the BIOS does not recognise any of the hard disks, it hangs and hard disk LED glows continuosly.

I have done chkdsk (in the 2-3 minutes the computer is running on XP) it gives no error on 80GB secondary disk.On the primary hard disk, it says files are inuse, please schedule a scan on next startup. On scheduling thes scan, the scan on next reboot gives no error.

But the computer keeps shutting down. Mostly this happens when I try to open video stored on secondary hard disk using Media Player Classic.

Please help.

A:Windows Xp Shuts Down Immediately

Hi .The hard disk activity light probably stays on initially...because XP is configured to run a limited (3-step) version of chkdsk when hard shutdowns occur. I myself prefer to then run chkdsk /r (5-step) on the same drive when the system finally does boot.I would run chkdsk /r on each drive as a first step...and then reboot. I would run the chkdsk /r on the boot partition first, using the XP CD and Recovery Console...then try to boot.I would then run the chkdsk /r on the other drive from within XP: Start/Run/chkdsk /r, OK. To specify running chkdsk on a hard drive which I've designated as R, the command would be chkdsk R: /rWhat error messages are provided in Event Viewer that might be pertinent? EV is usually pretty good about indicating disk problems (once auto reboot on crash is disabled).Disable Auto Reboot On System Crash - http://www.theeldergeek.com/auto_reboot_on_system_crash.htm How To Use Event Viewer - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40108/how-to-use-event-viewer/ If it's something that chkdsk /r cannot repair, then I would move to a manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic.Louis

This computer was running fine about 4 months ago. Since then it has been in my closet. I decided to finally upgrade it to Win10. It booted up fine. I disable the GWX Control Panel and clicked the taskbar upgrade icon to start the upgrade. 5 or 10 minutes later it simply shutdown and did not restart.

I restarted manually and it managed to get to the Windows Welcome screen and then shutdown. Now when I try to restart the power LED lights up for about 1 second then shuts down again. Doesn't even get to post anything on the screen.

Any tips for this one?

Hi! My PC shuts down by itself (like it is being unplugged without any given time interval) and then immediately reboots. Sometimes the problem occurs even after a few seconds after booting.

My Desktop is Acer Aspire M1641 and it is broken (unable to boot) for about 3 years. About a month ago, I had the opportunity to brought it to a technician to fix it. The technician replaced the motherboard and the processor with a brandnew Biostar A55 MGC motherboard and a brandnew AMD A4-3300 with Radeon (tm) with HD Graphics 2.50 Ghz processor. The technician also changed the OS from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows 7 Ultimate.

When I brought the PC home, it looks like that it is operating normally. After approximately 2 days, the problem occured (shuts down by itself "like it is being unplugged" and then immediately reboots).

"Mysearchresults" browser hijacker infected it but I cant remember if the PC's problem occured first before the infection so I cant tell if it is a factor. (By the way I fallowed the instructions here : http://www.wintips.org/remove-mysearchresults-search-toolbar/ to remove mysearchresults). After fallowing the instructions to remove mysearchresults I scanned it with Microsoft Security Essentials which turned out to be ok. To make sure, I uninstalled the Microsoft Security Essentials and installed ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 (not yet updated) and scanned it which turned out to be ok too.

A:PC Shuts Down by Itself and then Immediately Reboots

you've done a good analysis already but there are a few other things to check. cpu and mobo temp already, but what about graphics card temp? you can use gpu-z to get the gpu temp. higher than normal temp may cause this kind of problem. another possibility is with one of the device drivers. see if this auto-reboot still happens when you use windows in safe mode. safe mode bypasses normal drivers n just use basic the most basic ones to enter windows. if no reboot happens, then you know it is caused by one of the drivers. no, it's unlikely the problem with the psu, and no you don't need to reformat the hard drive cause this is not windows/software problem but more often hardware.
for general n quick fix now, you can use your seven installation disc to enter 'system recovery options' then do startup repair and windows memory diagnostic. it doesn't always address the problem but there's nothing wrong to try though. startup repair will fix problems with system files, memory diagnostic will scan the ram to make sure it's working correctly.
tell us how it goes after all these steps, the results may lead to the correct fix.

For starters, my PC stays on all the time. When I got up this morning I noticed that my Outlook Express icon was not displayed in the Taskbar where it usually is. I also have an OE icon on my desktop and tried opening it from there. It seems to open and says receiving files (although it doesn't receive any) and immediately closes down. Once I got it to stay on long enough to make sure the "Disconnect after Send/Receive" box wasn't checked, and it was not. I tried a System Restore from a previous day when it was working fine, but there was no change.

I am running Windows XP SP2 and have not added any new hardware or software.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can read my email from my server and will check occasionally for any replies to this post.

Thanks very much,

Ken

A:Outlook Express Shuts Down Immediately

The simplest thing to do would be to move the contents of the OE Message Store folder to a new folder.
Using Windows Explorer (Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer) navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID NUMBER}\Microsoft\Outlook Express".
Make sure OE is closed before proceeding.
Open the Outlook Express folder and you should see all the DBX files.
Click Edit>Select all
Click Edit>Cut
Right click an empty area on your desktop and on the menu select New>Folder.
Name it Backup.
Open the new folder Backup and click Edit>Paste.
The DBX files should move from the Message store into Backup.
Try opening OE.

Note: Your mail will all be gone, but you can Import it from the Backup folder.

I have read several threads that mention this problem, and how to search error logs for the codes, which I have done, but none of the threads mention a fix for the problem. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I just installed CS5 and am really looking forward to using Illustrator (the main reason for my getting CS5 in the first place).

Hey all,
I have a PCChips M830LR mobo with Athlon XP 1800 with a 300W power supply. When I start the computer the lights will come on with no harddrive activity. And after around 3 seconds it shuts down. I have reseated everything, and tried removing everything with the same results. So I'm thinking this is either Power Supply, Processor, or Motherboard. I have tried clearing CMOS to no avail. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

I just completed a new build. It powered on fine and I managed to configure BIOS but when it tried to restart the power supply immediately just clicked off. There was a small pause and the system tried to power on and shut off again. It kept cycling like that until I switched the power supply off.

Here are my specs:

Motherboard: MSI K9N2 Diamond
PSU: Coolmax CUG-950W
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
Graphics: Using Integrated
1 IDE DVD/RW
1 IDE HDD
1 SATA HDD
1 120mm Fan
2 80mm Fans

I'm not quite sure what's causing the problem as the system managed to power on and run fine at least twice and the 950W PSU should be enough to run the hardware I have and then some right?

Yesterday morning I discovered my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C55-B5201) had not shut down after I instructed it to.  I assumed I had not remembered to shut it down, but this morning I opened the lid to find that the computer was not shut down.  I shut down the computer again and it restarted within 30 seconds.  This is my new reality.  My laptop will not stay shut down.

I looked up the problem and tried a couple of solutions through the power options screen but since I am not a computer expert I declined to try the solution involving misconfig which I found, without talking to some experts.

For security I use Panda Security Pro and Win Patrol.  A few weeks ago I also noticed my battery indicator, when laptop is plugged in, shows 80% available battery power and not charging.  This also is different, but I thought, perhaps my battery was starting to wear out, even though at its age this should not be a problem.  My power setting is on "balanced" at the default settings.

Any help is welcome.  Thank you.

I run Visioneer Paperport 8 on a system with Windows XP (SP1). Whenever I open the program, it starts up long enough to populate its desktop and then shuts down. It does not give me any message before shutting down or any other indication of what is wrong; it's as if the program believes I have clicked exit.

I used to be able to run the software on this system without a problem. I then had to do a system recovery for reasons unrelated to Paperport; the program still worked at first but then this problem arose. My point here is just that the issue is not an inherent conflict between XP and Paperport.

I have installed the available updates for Paperport, but cannot find the precise build number because the program shuts down too quickly for me to find it.

I won't burden you with a list of the myriad software I have on the system, but if anyone has an idea what programs might interfere in a way that would make this happen I'd like to hear from you.

Anyone run into this? My Windows Media Player 11 shuts down as soon as I open it, giving me the usual Windows message "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close...".

So far it only does it when I try to open a library audio book which uses some sort of DRM or license or when my MP3 player is attached (which also has audio books on it). This was working fine a couple weeks ago. The only changes on my computer is I just downloaded an update to Avast AV and I'm using MS PowerToys SyncToy to sync My Documents. I tried a System Restore, to no avail.

I'm not familiar with the technical details. It lists assorted "modules":
wmplayer.exe
ntdll.dll
kernel32.dll
ADVAPI.dll
RPCRT4.dll
Secur32.dll
USER32.dll
GDI32.dll
IMM32.dll
LVPrcInj.dll
uxtheme.dll
msvcrt.dll
wmp.dll
ole32.dll
COMCTL32.dll
SHLWAPI.dll
OLEAUT32.dll

Event viewer lists this: "Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 11.0.5721.5145, faulting module indiv01.key, version 11.0.6000.6324, fault address 0x000ffe96."

I'm running XP Pro on an HP xw8000 workstation, dual processor 3.0G. Thanks for any advice.

A:Solved: WMP shuts down immediately after starting up

It looks like this is a combination of WMP11 and my library audio book download service. I restored my drive with a ghost image from before this probem occured, and it still wouldn't work. It works on WMP10. I'm guessing the library changed something on their DRM.

Here is a rather strange one.

This morning, Internet Explorer started acting like it was a pop-up meant for termination. Just as I start it, I see the page loading blue bar fill up, and then *pop*, it is gone.

I have no problem accessing my email with outlook, the connection is perfectly OK (I am now using my other conmputer to access the internet, both of them go though a router), I can access internet using Firefox on the machine with the oddly behaving Internet Explorer without problem. However, if I click on a link in an email, IE loads up and pops out immediately.
I deactivated the pop up blocker programs, firewall and did complete virus scan on the computer, rebooted twice, but this problem is still there. IE was working fine yesterday night when I went to bed.

If I disconnect the internet cable from the computer, IE remains on. If I reconnect the cable and request to connect to the internet, the window will then pop off.

I have Windows XP (I upgraded from originally installed ME 3 years ago), SP2 (downloaded), and am quite perplexed.

Anyone has any idea what is causing this, and how to solve this?

I have not been able to figure out if there is a pattern to the kinds of pages that make it shut down (definitely cannot go to Windows Update page). Here are some new environmental things that have been happening over the last few days:1. A game called Runescape has been played by a visiting nephew.2. Said nephew has also watched Loonytunes on my PC3. I installed Kaspersky AV 6.0 yesterday. My old AV software (Norton) had expired 3 days prior to installation of Kaspersky. Rolled back IE7 to IE62. Tried a variety of anti-spyware softwares and the only one that turned up something was on Spyware Doctor (PS Guard). However, PS Guard has not shown up on any of the others I have tried (SpyHunter, AdAware, Yahoo).3. Ran CCleaner to do a general clean up4. First I thought it was a virus so I ran NOD32, Ewido, AVG and Spybot but they all came out clean. Rebooting does not fix the problem and as I said, System Recovery does not work.

My Internet Explorer shuts down when I click on a link to go to another page as referenced by the one I am on. This is a very erratic problem but seems to be happening more often! I will be in the middle of searching something and then NO window. Then I have to start all over again. HELP!! I have XP home. Ran virus and adware..none found. I have DSL. Server says it is a microsoft problem. How do I repair explorer? It is not shown on the add-remove software list so tha I can re-install it. Any ideas? I know this is probably a really simple stupid problem but for the life of me it is just making me nuts. Brain is in shut down mode...so please restart mine! Thanks!!

My internet explorer keeps shutting itself down. The window just closes and I am back at my desktop. It first started when going to yahoo games. I can pick a game and the a screen appears that says click to continue. When I click, down it goes. Firefox does the same thing. And I can not install Java. I uninstalled it so I could reinstall it because the internet games would not load in pogo or yahoo. So now I have a mess.

It doesn't always shut down. Just when I click on certain things in certain sites. Especially Yahoo!

Please Help Me !!

Hi Guys, This one is very distinctive so hoping someone recognises the problem.

Internet Explorer shuts down and displays the "IE has encountered a problem..." message box, whenever I input text into a screen, eg when trying to input search text into yahoo/google, or even writing this post - I had to switch to another PC.
It's XP Pro, and happens just about every time.

I've tried running Firefox - basically, the same happens with that!

If anyone has any ideas whats going on, would appreciate some advice!

Thanks for reading!

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.

Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Once it starts only like 10 seconds pass maybe less and it shuts down again and restarts and that happens over and over again. So i looked online and in some website somebody said to press "window+R" and go to cmd and type "shutdown -a" to cancel the shutdown so that I could get rid of the trojan, i did that 3 times already and is not working, so my question is what can i do now? please help~!

Hi, I run a macbook pro 13" with 2.5GHZ pcu and 2.7GB RAM. I have Windows XP installed via Boot Camp.
Sometimes when I plug in regular headphones or plug/unplug AC power, the computer will shut down immediately. No warning, no "shutting down" screen, just OFF.
Took my computer to the store, they ran test, they verified it's not a hardware issue. They looked very confused and seemed like they didn't know what else to do, and I needed to get back to work so I took my computer back. But I need to know what is happening here, it is very dangerous for my computer.
Malwarebytes and AVG scans showed no problems.

Any ideas? Thank you.

A:computer shuts down immediately when I plug in headphones

It could be electrostatic discharge (ESD), like the little zap you get sometimes when touching something after walking across carpet, especially when the humidity is very low. Try to notice if the computer shuts off when you just touch the headphone or power adapter plugs to the computer before it is actually plugged in. If it does, that is probably what is happening.

Its just a guess, but I have damaged a couple of computers at home by this from plugging in USB thumb drives.

It started when I was playing Dishonored when a brownout came. I opened my pc in safe mode, looked to my event viewer (i usually do it when a brownout came to my PC to check for errors) then saw unexpected shutdown error. I Did nothing there, then rebooted my PC. Then after reboot, played again dishonored but the save logs got naming problems. I played a while then exited to windows. But after that i saw my rocketdock got frozen. Opened event viewer but nothing weird. Did a reboot and error ID 6008 popped out in the event viewer... I tried to fix it by going maintenance and fix error but no errors... and searching for possible solutions... came to a thread here and made a system restore on the time before i install my dishonored and while on safe mode.(i was persistent on fixing the error 6008, cuz i dont want pc probs) Reboot and a dialogue appears saying this "System restoration could not be done. Computer files and programs has NOT been changed. Information: A unknown error occured during system restore. After researching into everything, I believe I got the Battle Sentry virus. I went to PCHell.com and followed the directions to removing everything, but I can't complete it. Malicious files in my HijackThis log doesn't seem to be effected by KillBot when I try to delete it. Also when I log on when I'm not in safe mode, I get an odd errors message and I believe things on my computer start redownloading itself implementing the virus over again.

If anyone can help, I couldn't thank them enough. This virus is seriously hindering my business and I'm desperate. Thank you so much. Below is an e-mail I was attempting to send to [email protected] from HijackThis but it was returned immediately:

Hi,

Can you please tell me how I can get rid of this virus on my computer? We had a storm the other night and my computer was on. The power went out and when it came back on, it starts to boot and then I get a black screen that says

We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused.....

It gives me options to try to restart Windows XP as normal, or using the last known good configuration. I have tried both of these and it starts to boot up and then immediately restarts and goes back to the black screen with white letters. It also gives me options to start in Safe Mode, with networking, or command prompt. (i don't know if I feel comfortable with that)

What happened to it? I've never had any problems like this?

A:Windows XP begins start up then immediately shuts down

To successfully use the Last Known Good Configuratioin option, first after you turn on the power, immediately start to tap the F8 key. This should open the 'Safe Mode" window (black window with white lettering) Use the arrow keys to move up to the above option click enter. Let the computer do it's thing.
Post back and let us know how it goes.

Hi TSG guys,

I've searched this on the forum and other sites and have found similar threads, but no working answer. My laptop is about a year and a half old and works perfectly fine until yesterday. With no previous warning, when I unplugged my laptop yesterday to use it on battery, suddenly it completely shut off - literally the second I unplugged it, as your desktop would when your power goes out in the house.

If I tried to power it back on without the plug in, there would be no response, as if the battery was completely drained. Once I put the plug back in the charging light goes orange (charging) for a few seconds, then goes white (indicating fully charged). I can power on the computer as per usual, as long as it's plugged in. But again, removing the plug makes it INSTANTLY turn off. If I check the battery indicator in the lower right hand corner, it says "plugged in, not charging" and is stuck at about 92% power, not gaining or losing power.

A:HP Laptop Shuts Off Immediately After Removing Plug

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Based on your description of the problem, I would say it is almost certainly a faulty battery. The symptoms you describe are typical of that. Either that, or a faulty connection somewhere between the battery and the laptop itself, either way it sounds to me like a hardware problem. The more likely option, in my opinion, is a battery fault as that is far more likely to fail.

The indicator lights are by no means infallible, if the battery is outputting the right signal you will get the right lights, this is entirely possible even though there may be a fault, albeit fairly unusual. The lights are only an indication, not a definitive indication of status.

If it is still under warranty I would RMA the laptop and get HP to fix it.

That's amazing. Firefox runs ok, as well OUTLOOK runs ok.

Went to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, at Internet Explorer selection opted to FIX or REINSTAL (?) IE, it did, restarted machine, problem still there.

SPYBOT and ADAWARE reports nothing, except few cookies from Firefox.

Protection by AVG updated as today, viruscan resulted ok.

A:Internet Explorer 6.x Shuts Down Machine

hmmm, found something very strange.
Running IEXPLORER.EXE from another shared machine, it works!!!!!
Running IEXPLORER.EXE from this machine, powers machine down!!!!

Ok, Copied this good EXE file (dated 2003) to anywhere in the problem machine, works fine, even on desktop. Then, obviously tried to copy the EXE file to the right place, C:\program files\iexplorer\ but... in seconds the 2003 file (UPPER CASE NAME) turned to lower case name and dated 2001.

Ok, nervous me. Renamed iexplorer.exe to iexplorer_bad.exe (the 2001 file) and immediately appeared another iexplorer.exe (2001)... hmmm, something is forcing this file (2001) to exist, a virus probably.

Ok, copied the 2003 (good) EXE file to this directory as IEXPLORERX.EXE and it works, but something is not allowing me to keep the good file (2003), it insists to keep the 2001 (bad) file.

AVG did not detect any problem.
Adaware 6.0 and SPYBOT also detects nothing bad.
All the 3 above updated as today.

Is there anything I can run to identify or log what is creating this file?

Thank you,
Wagner.

This is a problem that has just started. Uploaded multiple pictures at walgreens.com only 4 days ago. Today everytime I try to upload my pictures I get an error message "internet explorer has stopped working" then "internet explorer restarting". I have done restore points twice, all the way back to Dec 25 but it has not helped. Funny thing is 2 times out of 10 it uploads just fine. I have been trying to upload pix for my mother to view for hours now and still havent gotten it done. I have a dell inspiron 65 GB used 232 GB free. Windows Vista. External "my book" hard drive I keep mostly picture on.

A:internet explorer shuts down/restarts

Hello,
You may have an add on that is conflicting with your attempt to upload.
Open I.E.
Click on tools (upper right hand corner)
Select manage add ons
Select enable\disable add ons.
Disable any add ons that you do not use, or recognize.
This may also be a case where your temp and index.dat folders are full.
Download Ccleaner and open it. Select run cleaner in the lower right hand .Do not use the registry tool with out saving a back up!
This will clean your index.dat and temp folders.

Hey Guys,

For the last month and a bit I've had a problem with my Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. Neither of them are opening when I want them to.

I haven't really needed them up until now.. I need IE for a work project.

I tried doing a System Restore to before the problem started occouring - but that doesn't seem to be an option on this computer, Can anyone help?

I'm not too sure what version of WMP I was using, but I did try to upgrade me IE to the latest version, but that did not help.

Hello,
When launching IE the window will load for a second or two, then immedietly die and shut down. I disabled the "Enable third-party browser extensions" option from the internet options menu, and that fixed the problem and stopped the browser from crashing. However, the real problem is that it has been doing this to computers on my workplace network all day. It has happened to four computers today, and i have disabled the "enable-third party browser extensions" option on all of them... but i don't just want a band-aid solution. The fact that it seems to be happening all over the network is what worries me. I have ran ad-aware, spybot and bazooka as well as a full virus scan on one of the computers that had the problem and it came up with nothing out of the ordinary. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Has anyone heard of anything similar happening to anyone else? thanks!

When I start IE8 for the first time from boot up, it shuts down on its own within ten seconds. I then reopen it and runs normally from there on.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

This is a problem that has just started. I uploaded multiple pictures to walgreens.com only days ago but today I get error messages "internet explorer has stopped working" and "internet explorer is restarting" when I try uploading pictures, then it just shuts down(explorer, not the computer). Have been trying to upload pix for my mom to view for hours and still dont have it done! I have a Dell inspiron, windows vista, internet explorer 7, 65 GB used, 232 Gb free. Funny thing about it is 2 times out of 10, it uploads just fine. I have tried doing only 3-4 up to 2o, give the same errors.
I have run spyware dr with antivirus, computer is clean. Have also Reset Internet Explorer Settings. Niether one helped

A:internet explorer shuts down/restarts

Try this.

1. Open IE

2. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab, Tick "Empty Temp Internet Files Folder When Browser Is Closed" Hit OK.

3. Close all instances of IE

4. Open IE and see if the issue is gone.

Also clean out your temp folder

Internet explorer shuts down as soon as you open it, no errors are displayed. Mozilla firefox works properly, no problem with e-mail. Have scanned computer with spybot, adaware, ewido, norton corporate 10 and bitdefender,
used hjackthis to do additional cleaning. I have seen 4 computers with the same problem. They all started having this problem at about the same time.

A:Internet explorer shuts down as soon as you open it

Hi bluenose3 and welcome to TSF....

What version of IE are you using?

Is there anything in the Event Log which corressponds to the crashes?

Are you using 2 anti virus products....Norton/BitDefender? This can cause problems.

You mentioned another 4 pc's with the same problem...are they on a network or are you referring to friend's PC's.

Have all computers recently been updated with Windows Updates?

Post back on the info please :)

Hello, everyone!...

I’ve been experiencing a very strange problem.

I can be working on my computer for a few minutes or a few hours, and then when I left-click my mouse to open a file, or to save a game, or to do just about anything, my computer immediately turns itself off…by which I mean it completely shuts down, and I must turn off the main power supply switch, wait 20 minutes or more, turn the switch back on, and then turn on my front-panel power-on button to restart my computer.

This problem is happening more and more frequently and is starting to cost me a lot of time…and I’m simply clueless.

Does anybody have any idea why left-clicking a mouse to have a computer perform a task (like saving a file) would cause the computer to immediately shut down and power itself off?

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi guys,

I know this question has been asked a lot before in similar ways, however I'm going to describe my situation separately.

I have an MSI GE70 laptop thats a little over 3 years old now. About 6 months ago is when this problem began. I began not being able to unplug my laptop without it shutting off immediately. More recently, it has gotten to the point where it shuts off even when plugged in.

I've replaced the battery twice, the power cord once, and the DC power jack cord as well. I replaced the power jack cord a week ago hoping that the wiggle in the old one was the reason for the missed contacts/not charging. I was wrong.

When I pulled apart the entire laptop to replace the power jack cord, I didn't visually see any wires that were frayed/damaged...so I'm kind of lost as to what it could be.

The only thing I think that could've happened was that the fan blowing so hot (gaming laptop) melted critical components to the battery charging circuit. The fan already melted the side plastic guard off and is right next to the power cord hookup.

Additionally, right before it turns off, I hear this "metallic, electronic?" CLICK...once or multiple times and then it shuts off.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible. Cheers

TL;DR - Laptop shuts off when unplugged. When plugged in and under heavy load, hear a metallic CLICK and then it shuts off.

A:MSI GE70 Laptop Shuts off Immediately after AC Cord Removal

I was going to suggest replacing the battery, but you already done that, so

If you melted critical components on the charge circuit you need to replaqce the charge circuit, that circuit is not just for charging the battery, but also for distributing power. If you know how to work a digital solder gun then you may be able to fix the damage to the board.

Electrolytic capacitors, resistors, diodes, (and if you know what your doing) fets and transistors are all replaceable but before doing anything look for any damage to the charge board PCB, if there is damage there you need to buy a new charge board,
7k to fix damage to the PCB is not worth it.
However if there is no damage to the PCB and just to components on the PCB than you could fix it for 5 and have spare parts.

Additionally before doing anything, get the model, serial and vershion numbers from the charge board and download a To Scale Schematic of the board so you can print it out and trace out the power rails and V's that will be involved in any components you will be working with.

So I have a Dell Precision M4600 running Windows 7.  Whenever its plugged into the wall or docking station, if the battery drops out, it shuts down immediately as if I don't have it plugged into the wall.  Windows does tell me that its plugged in.  The battery charges fine as I have unplugged the laptop and used it off the battery.  So those are indicators that it is receiving power through the plug.

So why should it power off if the battery gets disconnected?
Yes the battery is loose and right now I have duct tape holding it in.

My computer sometimes crashes without any indication, and I would like to know why. I am currently using a refurbished Dell Studio laptop, and the computer rarely, but annoyingly, crashes without shutting down, displaying a blue screen, or having the "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" popup. Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials have returned no results upon scanning. I do not believe this is an overheating problem, as the computer has never felt hot while using it, and I don't believe this is an issue with the power supply either, since the battery still works.

Seems to be a hardware problem, but I need help diagnosing the source of the problem. My computer turns on. The power led and the fans turn on for a half a second and turns off. Then 1 second later, the fans and power led turn on again, and then off and on and off and on again.

What is the faulty component do you guys think?

I'd suggest running windows update (now called Microsoft Update) to be sure you're running the latest version of all the software. Also, be sure you have the latest version of the AOL software.

I have been helping my Uncle with his computer, WINXP, sp3, Dell Dimension desktop. (IE7) I have had it for 3 weeks and am pretty good at cleaning out malware, I've cleaned at least 40+ computers, but not a true geek.

When I got his computer, it showed a couple of infections, which I got cleaned out, nothing shows up in Malwarebytes, Kapersky online or AVG. Also it was reporting a msvcrt.dll error when it shut down initally, but nothing now??

The problem is that when I click on internet explorer, it comes up, then shuts right back down, no errors. I also went to the control panel and the file folder for internet options is totally missing.

I have tried reregistering the files, and every other suggestion across the web and microsoft. I am considering rolling back to IE6, but it says that it will affect, MBAM and many other files if I roll back. (I see a folder for IE8, so am thinking he tried to update)

I am at a total loss I have spent at least 50 hours or more researching this.

Questions:

1. Should I restore it back to the day I got it from him with infections back and post logs in spyware forum?? (Internet option folder was gone then too)

2. Or should I roll back to IE6 and not worry about the warnings?

3. Should I do a complete restore, only problem, he didn't make his restore disks when he bought the computer, but I think I can still make them. (I also have a dell dimension WINXP SP1 restore disk from my mom's computer, or I have a regul... Read more

I keep having a problem with my windows xp pro re-booting on me. Sometimes it works fine other times it just says internet explorer needs to shut down. I scanned for viruses and even ran a hard drive scan from Seagate tools. It says my HD is fine, but sometimes when the computer re-boots it says there was a problem with the HD and does a scan disk check before re-booting. I also have a error message at times that says Mark_Fun driver NT error. I also seem to have a problem with Adobe flash player always wanting to load on every web site I go to. I suspect that either I have a virus or worm or maybe my OS has some corrupt files and needs to be re-loaded. Can anybody help? I hate to start over and re-load everything back on my PC. Thanks!

Hi,

I hope I'm posting in the correct forum as I wasn't quite sure which one to put this under. Anyway, I have IE (How do I find out what version?), and I have Windows Vista (Again, how do I find out what version I have?). I will be reading blogs, visiting websites, typing on my own blog, etc. and IE will radomly close and immediately restart. The only message that I'm getting is, "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close." As for anti-virus protection, I have Spy Sweeper, and I run it every one to two days, and I always quarantine everything that shows up. I haven't downloaded anything new that I can think of as far as programs go. I have downloaded digital scrapbooking kits, but they are all from the same company, one that I definitely trust, and I've been downloading from them long before I started having this problem. I guess that's all. If there is anything else I can do to help solve the problem, please let me know.

Thanks so much!
Michele

Hello all...I tried everything possible doing all the research on the net as possible and seeking HP tech support. Basically, my laptop won't start anymore. When I startup the computer, it just abruptly shuts down after 2-minutes. I tried reseating the RAM, the Hard drive, other things HP told me but all to no avail.

I am not exactly what is wrong with it but it seemed to have the same identical problem as this link: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006...and-shuts-down/

I have basically given up I think...I had one of these sent in when I had my warranty and HP supposedly fixed it. My whole life is on this computer. I was thinking of getting another comp if I can't fix this (I don't know what is wrong with it?) but what would happen to all the valuable materials and software on it? I have the hard drive still? Is there a device they sell I can hook up my hard drive as an external hard drive if I plugged it in with a device or something?

Thank you so much for reading my bantering message but I hope someone can give me some insight and what they think is wrong. It is weird; it just starts up and shuts down. Thanks again for any of your assistance and time beforehand..!
