Q: Desktop Freezes at Welcome Page

I am running
Dell Inc.

OptiPlex 210L
Service Tag 2YWFF2J
Express Service Code 6463881739
Processor Intel® Celeron® CPU 2.80GHz
Processor Speed 2.73 GHz
Memory (RAM) 2048 MB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Operating System Version 5.1.2600

When I turn on the computer it generally freezes at the Welcome Page, I then pull out the power cable for 10 seconds and plug it back in, it can take a few attempts before it comes on properly . Recently when I turned it on and a blue windows screen came up saying that WINDOWS was checking the hard drives (1 x 40gig and 1 x 500gig) for? (can't remember). When finally turned on a box appears saying that Adaware has unexpectedly been closed.
I generally use Google Chrome but if I use Internet Explorer it re-directs me to what appears to be a Polish website.
Can you help?

Hello and to BleepingComputer.Let's see what we're dealing with here. Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.Link 1Link 2Link 3Link 4Before we begin, you should disable any anti-malware software you have installed so it does not interfere with RKill running. This is because some anti-malware software mistakenly detects RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how to disable your security software.Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed. If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply***************************************************Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download linkIMPORTANT!!! - when you save the file, rename it to something random, such as bubbles.exe This must be done before beginning the download!MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from'>here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. I've an Asus f5sl laptop with Vista Home Premium (32bit) but it's been freezing on me lately.

When I boot up, it gets to the black screen with the green bar but after a few seconds, the green bar freezes and I can't log in. Occasionally it boots up after around half an hour but then Vista periodically freezes for a few seconds before resuming (which is annoying when trying to write out something etc)
I don't see any problems in Safe Mode so is possibly a driver? I've updated all my drivers, completely updated using WIndows Update, ran antispyware, used System Restore etc

Only problem is; I've moved to a new country, and like a fool, I left my Vista start up disk back home. Which I would otherwise have tried.

Here lately, while I'm surfing various websites, my screen locks up, I get the little spinning search icon, then my computer goes to the Desktop for a few seconds, then back to the webpage I was visiting.
This tends to happen while I search various websites, and the volume also freezes up as well.
I have ALL updates, up-to-date antivirus program, and no other issues.

Any suggestions?

My problem: I have been experiencing (situational) freezes while using my PC, these freezes require me to hold down the power button and reboot.

Details: The situations in which my pc freezes is in low or next to no stress situations, this includes; sitting on the desktop, browsing the web, idle mode, messaging people over steam and msn, and many other little things that shouldn't be causing any problems, right?

The situations in which my pc does not freeze is in games (to avoid my pc freezing while typing this I am sitting in the main menu of a game using the Steam web overlay). I can play intensive games at their maximum settings and my PC never freezes, unless it is the game's fault, and that has only happened on one occasion. It does not freeze when in low stress gaming situations either, like in the main menu of a game.

I think it is hardware related, as it happened on both of my completely separate (and individually formated) installs of Windows XP and Windows 7 (I reinstalled Windows 7 once).

This problem has occurred with both out of the box and fully updated drivers for all pieces of hardware, on XP and 7.

Errors messages:

All error messages occur before my OS is loaded and just after I have rebooted after a freeze. On my old XP install it froze and actually had to recover the system BIOS, this is when I noticed a red and orange light on my motherboard, along with 3 other green lights (the 1st one is red, the second is orange). I am running a desktop that freezes within 3 minutes of Windows XP and showing the desktop. Keyboard won't work and sometimes mouse cursor is able to move. I tried system restore, recovery console (which caused me more grief because it overwrote my Vista MBR), NOD32 scans, Ad-aware scans, Spybot scans, and ClamWin scans. I don't know how this happened. A few days ago, I came back to my computer from watching TV and it was frozen. I had to manually reboot with the button and it's been like this ever after.

Recently I have been having trouble on various web sites. If I click a link to go to another page within the site I get a blank page with the "IE cannot display the page" error. Now I am also getting page freezes with a pop-up bar on the bottom of the page that says "page not responding due to long running script". This is a used laptop I bought about 3 months ago and it is incredibly slow... I have Comcast Xfinity and download speeds show low 50's when I test it but pages load sooooo slow???
Can anyone help with this?

I am using a Dell Dimension 8300 using Microsoft XP Media Center. My main browser is IE 8 and my secondary browser is Google Chrome. This morning my browser page froze after a few mouse strokes and the hour-glass icon appears. If I click again the following comes up at the top of the page "Not Responding" and stays that way until I go to the Windows Task Manager and shut down that program. I have tried Google Chrome and the problem doesnt seem to appear. I have the feeling that a phantom program has attached itself to my browser and is causing this problem. I have used Norton Security Suite and NPE to no avail. I have also tried CCCleaner and Wise Care 365, also without improvement. Any support is greatly appreciated.

A:Page freezes using IE 8

We do not suggest using Wise Care or any other Registry cleaners/optimizers like Norton as they cause more problems then they solve.
Open IE 8, go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset Internet Explorer settings/Reset.

For a few months now, I have been unable to use IE because as soon as I launch the program, if it loads at all, it freezes on the home page. I have tried changing home pages in my Internet Options; no luck. As soon as I try to navigate to a new page, IE crashes. I have not sent any reports to MS, but I did save a txt file of the error just now.

Specs: Windows XP, SP2, IE6 (cannot download 7 since IE freezes on first page)

Per identical concerns I've seen in this forum, I have now downloaded Active Virus Shield and run that. It found some Trojans in old Outlook folders, which I removed. Restarted; IE still freezes.

I searched the forum more and see that this is a common problem that generally requires a HijackThis log to review (since there seem to be different causes, and the problems have been cited over several versions of Windows and IE). I have downloaded HijackThis, and here is the log if someone could give a shot at helping me fix things:

I have been using this <> for years with zero problems. Now when I open the page, which opens perfectly, everything freezes, hour glass pops up, and I must go into task manager to end the problem. This is blowing my mind, everything else on the computer works perfectly, I have just cleaned the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro, with IE 8 and SP 3. I've never seen this before and have no idea what the problem can be, and yes, I've had the server checked on the websites end.

Thank for any help I may receive with this problem,

Hello skysmama and welcome to TSG.

Please give us the "exact make and model of your system". Are you stuck on the login screen? Do you have any errors on bootup? Do you have a backup of your important data? You should have a recover partition on the laptop, and this will bring the system back to factory defaults, But! you will loss all your saved data in doing this. The more information you give us, the better we can help.

I even had trouble with HiJackThis, which made me run as administrator which wasn't as bad as GMER, which I couldn't for the life of me get this program to run without Windows popping up in the middle stating something made it stop working three times, also on the second try the screen flashed blue with some writing but it was so fast like not even a second and then it just shut my PC down. So all I could get is a like two things on the GMER. Could NOT run it all the way.

This means it does not reach the bottom of the page and so no boot options,
Usually clean the memory card and graphics card contacts with switch cleaner and cool PC with liquid Freon.
However. this time even after a few hrs. to cool it will still not reach the bottom of the boot page so no boot or bios options are available.
It has been into a lab twice where they replaced the cpu fan and removed a faulty DVD player which they said was causing the problem.
I formatted most of the hard drives saving some files and made a clean installation of windows 7 home premium with a new activation code.
But this time even after a few hrs. cooling it will still not reach the boot options or bios entry at the bottom of the boot page.Any ideas what could be causing this?
If it doesn't reset by tomorrow a.m. I will have to return it to the lab.But I don't think they have any ideas what to do.
I was converting video files at the time it froze.
My speccy results are on another link on this forum.Really stumped this time so any suggestions short of scrapping it and buying a new PC would be appreciated.Particularly annoying after re-installing many of the programs I require and worked non-stop 4 48 hours to get up to date and it was working really well.

I am using my son's lap top for this and I keep hitting some key which cancels every thing I have typed. So this was the 4th attempt to post.

A:windows freezes at 5th line of boot page.

Now I found something unusual. My wife called me while I tried to start again and it stuck on the 5th line, but normally when this happens I don't wait, I give it a couple of minutes and press the on-off button. This time I returned 10 minutes after it stuck. The screen was blank so I pressed ESC and the cursor appeared and then the sign in.Now everything is working again perfectly. At least until the next time it sticks.
I really need to know what the best graphics card this set-up will support .With an HDMI out connection.

Hi folks,
I'd appreciate any advice.

I have Windows Vista (SP1) and IE 7.
Luckily I also downloaded Firefox.
Because I'd been having some IE problems.
I am using a secondary User - because I did not want to connect to the internet as Administrator.

Yesterday IE hung and I had to ALT+CNTL+DEL and end process (because application would not end).
Since then here is what happens:

I open IE and my default page "mostly" comes up (AOL), but it is TOTALLY FROZEN; nothing can be done - TOOLS won't work, cannot change the page, etc It becomes totally unresponsive.

I tried rebooting - no help.
I logged off and signed on as the Administrator.
I have a different default page, so when I opened IE there, it opened, but as soon as I entered it frozen. So I killed the app with A+C+D.

I opened IE and tried Manage Add-Ons. Then I was able to open the page.
Sothen I logged on as the user again, and again IE freezes immediately.

Any ideas?
?Can I change the default without opening IE (since the default pg might be the problem)?

Do I have to reload IE?
Do I need to save my bookmarks, before I do?

I downloaded "Smart Popup Killer" and every since then everytime I click a link that has to open in a new window or a popup comes up, my internet freezes. I've tried deleting the program, still didn't fix it. Is there some kind of corruption in a file somewhere? Can someone please help me out?!

A:Internet Freezes when I click a page that opens in a new window

I'm not familiar with the program, but usually a program will have an 'uninstall' file which is reached through the AddRemove Programs in Control Panel. If you just delete a program, some files are left in your system.

Try to install the program again; then go through proper avenue to uninstall (not delete). If nothing is shown in AddRemove Programs, look in the Popup file for a file labeled 'unwise' or 'uninstall'

Thank you very much for your help. Here is the gist of my problem:

When I open a browser(IE7 Vista SP1), it initially freezes for about 30 seconds before opeining my home page(Google). I can see the progress bar at the bottom of the window just get a little green and then it freezes. Once it lets go and I do my search, it takes me to the results page. However, when I click on one of the items, it very slowly, takes me to an advertisement page. Most of which I have never seen before. If I click on the back button, sometimes it will let me go back, sometimes not. If I can go back and I click on the results again, it then takes me to the correct page. I have not noticed any other ill effects from whatever it is that has infected my computer. Thanks again for your help. I have pasted and attached the 3 files you requested from the programs you asked me to run.

A:[SOLVED] Browser freezes upon opening then goes to an advertisement page

4 Days old now. I am in a bad way trying to use the internet.

I have an update to my problem. I have apparently somehow disabled part of the hijack. It now no longer takes me to an alternate page but now it completely freezes my browser for several minutes before releasing it to go to the page I requested. Also, I am now required to click twice on links in Google before it will go to them.

I am on IE 11 and have been since it was released. Also, I open 4 tabs when IE starts, being one of them. I've been doing this for a few years.

Starting within the last couple of months I started experiencing various "could not access, try again later", "page not found" errors, random long delays and, worst of all, the browser would get into a state where it would not refresh any pages - when the tab is selected or even when refresh is selected while the tab's address is being displayed. When in that state, if I click on another tab it will highlight that tab and its URL will be displayed in the address bar but it won't change the page being displayed. The only thing I can do at that point is to open the task manager and kill IE and start over.

About the only time it has happened when I was actively doing something with the browser was when it was on the outlook page/tab. The rest of the time it occurs after I have been doing nothing for 5-10 minutes or have been away from the outlook page that long.

I have disabled Norton Security Suite -- a/v and firewall -- and it made no difference. I then tried the Google Chrome browser but it would do the same thing.

As I said, this has been going on for a couple of months and during that time I have come more and more to suspect that its related to the outlook site. About a week ago it quit displaying the outlook page unless I disabled the Norton toolbar. But, again as I said earlier, completely ... Read more

A:Browser partially freezes when page is open...

Hi use this awesome free tool,
Temp files delete,
Run this as administrator and Start the scanner,
Shut your machine down after it finishes,

Anything that happens with all browsers is most likely third party security related interference,
I tested briefly will continue to see if it occurs on my end but not able to replicate the stalling/ freezing yet,
If the above temp file delete utility does not make any difference,
Open ie,
Use Alt+TO or Gear symbol/ Safety delete browser history,
General section/ Check the box to delete browser history on exit,
Delete browser history button,
Uncheck everything and delete. only the top section is actually deleted on exit nothing else.
Save or apply and okay your way out,
Close and re-open ie and test again,

I have Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 11. I have one web site ( that I use frequently but have not been able to access for about 2 weeks. The web page will partially open and then stops. When I try to scroll on the web page or open a new window, either nothing happens or I get a message that the web page is not responding. Strangely enough I can open the main site and read articles, etc with no problem. I contacted tech support at the web site and they can't find a problem with their web site and suggested I install Moxilla as my internet browser.

Here's what I've tried:
I tried listing the site in the compatibility mode but it didn't help.
I cleared the cookies off my computer but that didn't help.
I disabled my NIS firewall and tried to bring up the web page but that didn't work.

I'm still suspicious that there's a problem with that particular web page since I have no trouble opening other web pages.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

While I was on the internet, a web page made itself take up most of my desktop. Originally it said all this crap about SPYWARE FOUND OMG OMG OMG!!!, but I edited the source so now it's just a blank page, but I can't get rid of it. I've used Spybot SD, Ad-Aware, AVG, and Xoftspy, and nothing was found, and there's no program running that could have caused it (I checked all the processes in Task Manager, and they're all ok), so I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I have hp pavilion g6-2249 wm notebook. My laptop is 4 months old. Two days ago when I started my
pc, the welcome page opens and then I sign in. Everything is ok on the apps page that immediately opens.
If I click the desktop app icon, it goes to the desktop and the entire page starts to flash, it shows the desktop
for 2 seconds and then then flashes to blue for 5 seconds and back and forth, etc.

The desktop will not stay open long enough for me to do anything. I cannot get it to start in safe mode. I clicked
F8 repeatedly on start up but nothing happens. I used the esc on startup and ran every test offered except BIOS.
I don't know what to do with that so I didn't mess with it. All tests were ok.

If I go back to the app page from the flashing desktop, the app page and charms start flashing also. I can't even
shut down properly then. Norton 360 runs in the background all the time but I can't get to it to do a scan. I
can't get to any file. The only way to get online is to turn off pc and turn on later. App page does not flash at
that time. I go to search and click on Explorer and I can go to my homepage. If I click on required addons then
the background starts flashing and I have to reset my cursor every two letter that I type. I am going crazy.
Can someone help me???

If you can do this, you can get to Safe Mode:

Windows key + C.
Hold shift key and click RESTART.
then you have all the options.

Click on Advanced Options then Startup Settings.
Click Restart and you have almost the full advanced Boot Options menu like XP, Vista or Win 7.

A:PC freezes on desktop

Hi, you say you have Eset and Avg installed.
You only need one anti-virus program - using two will not protect you more but less, as they both try to protect the system.
While in safe mode, scan your Pc with one of the anti-virus programs.
[Disable the one that you are not going to use first]
Remove all that the anti-virus program finds.

Then try chkdsk /r
Boot from the Xp install Cd...when prompted press [R]
Choose Windows installation [typically by pressing [1]
When prompted for password.
Press Enter.
Then type
chkdsk /r
[note space before /r]

When the scan has fininshed.
Type Exit
And press Enter.
Let us know if you can now start in normal mode, not safe mode.

Hello, this is my first post :)

I got a problem that appeared suddenly out of nowhere, with no apparent reason.
My desktop (explorer.exe really) freezes/hangs immediately everytime I do one of the following:

* Right click on any file on the desktop (or in file explorer)
* Try to move a file (drag n' drop)
* Mark a file and press ALT + ENTER (to see file properties page)
* Press WINDOWS + E (to start explorer) (I CAN start explorer via the shortcut though)
* Try to delete a file
* Try to copy a file

I then have to kill "explorer.exe"... when I kill explorer.exe it doesn't automatically restart like it usually does, instead I have to Run "explorer.exe" to get my desktop back. (which is wierd)

I've tried installing alternative desktops/shells like LiteStep and ROSexplorer but the same happens with them. (which is interesting).

Also, when I right click on any item in Opera download manager, Opera freezes too (but not explorer.exe).

So I am now unable to copy/delete files and therefore I am not optimally happy at this time :/
I actually have to use various programs to copy files, for example to copy an image file I have to start my image viewer and choose "Save as..." to copy the image. To copy a video file I use my mediaplayer etc. (so copying actually works on the filesystem level, but not with explorer).

I consider myself to be quite able when it comes to computers (I manage our home network / I program etc) but I cannot... Read more

I was able to create a new "system repair disc" but was not able to create a "recovery disc" before it froze.  I used the system repair disc using the alt f-10.  Seems to be running good.  Has not frozen.  Will try again to do a new set of system recovery disc for the future.

If I drawing a square around a group of desktop icons and then click outside the square to de-emphasize, the desktop will many times freezes up. Start menu and everything else works fine. A simple restart will reset the desktop.

Hello, welcome to the Forums!
This would not be the first course of action for most of the users here, but since it has been 8 hours since your post, and nobody else has answered, can I recommend a Repair Install?
Just a thought. No guarantee it will work, but it certainly won't hurt anything.

Hello. Lately, my Dell PC is displaying this very annoying tendency to sometimes lock up, leaving Taskbar and Task Manager unusable (yet sometimes I'm still able to use whatever window I'm currently in- ususally the Firefox browser- fine, though I sometimes can't move the windows anywhere, they're locked in place.) so I can't manage anything.

This was happening, so I cleared out more space on my harddrive, now it has far more free space than it did before. At first it didn't seem to do anything, then for the past like two days it seemed like it did help and it was normally functioning again. (I had also updated and ran Malwarebytes, which I hadn't in a while, and it did come up with a lot of things, but they were all PUPs- however after I did that, Internet Explorer was finally functioning again, for the past while it had just had an error message and didn't go anywhere when you tried to search with it.)

But now, just yesterday everything including the browser windows starting freezing up and I had to restart again. I was getting concerned because this morning, it was frozen after being left on all night, so I restarted, and the account would lock up after a bit of having logged on, I had to keep restarting. I have to use the keyboard to activate the name-log in- bar to get to the accounts because the mouse clicks don't activate it to appear. I got lucky and it became a bit better after a few attempts, and I was able to make it onto the Internet.

This is my first time posting a question any time any where so please bare with me.

I am running my computer with windows XP. I cannot get it to get past the main page (desktop) when I go down to the task bar where it says START i get an hour glass. I cannot click on any of my desk top Icons and have them do anything and I cannot go into the start menu. I have tried control, shift, escape to see if I can run off a cd this could be of help if a cd is needed to fix the problem. I did try to boot the computer off of a disk thinking perhaps I had a virus (I still think that might be the problem) but I was unable to do this. I reset the boot to start from disk and when it started in dos and gave me my 4 choices I chose boot from disk then it said press f1 or f2 to continue. I pressed F1. when I had the Norton anti-virus disk in there it gave me the choice for normal startup or start up from disk. I tried to choose start up from disk but it wouldn't let me. I tried this several times with 2 different versions all with the same result. My 30 seconds ran out and it started up normally and then got stuck on the desk top page. I tried the same boot with the windows XP disk hoping that it might have a diagnostic bit to it, but no luck I chose boot form disk and it still went to the desk top page and got stuck. Anyone with any information or suggestions on what I might do would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to think that I will have to take it in somewhere only to ha... Read more

Does your system have upgraded ram or still the ram from factory? If it was upgraded and you still have the factory ram I would maybe try installing the old ram and see if the problem is the same? If you haven't do any Ram changes maybe try to re seat your Ram.. To me it sounds like Ram issue. Also little more info about when it happens may help.. Is there any time you can use your computer and it don't freeze? Or does it do it under all activities?  James

In every boot, I can get past the lockscreen with no problems. When I get to the Desktop, about three out of four times, it is extremely unresponsive. I hover over an icon, and the highlight stays for minutes without keeping my pointer on it.
I get the blue spinning wheel, and eventually, my wallpaper disappears and the background becomes white. It says that the Windows process has stopped responding. I reboot, and it usually happens again.
About 25% of the time, everything is fine, and it functions normally.
It is not malware related, and I was sent here by TB-Psychotic when we could not fix the problem. Here is the thread -
Any idea what the problem might be?

Hello can you please boot into safe mode and see if your problem persists. Follow the below instructions

Booting Into Safe Mode on Windows 8
The trick is to hold the Shift button and mash the F8 key, this will sometimes boot you into the new advanced “recovery mode”,  where you can choose to see advanced repair options.

You will need to click on the Troubleshoot option.

Now select Advanced Options.

Now choose the Windows Startup Settings option, by the looks of things we were never meant to find Safe Mode.

Finally hit the Restart button.

Like magic, when your PC reboots you will be able to boot into Safe Mode from the familiar looking Advanced Boot Options screen.

Good Day Everybody,

My Toshiba Satellite L505D kept freezing up at the desktop screen after I would start it up. The longest I've waited was about 30 mintues and it was still frozen I couldn't move the mouse or anything. I would restart and it would do the same thing. I found out I could do a factory reset and I did but everytime it would start there would be a configuration screen and after it finishes my laptop would reboot. after about 3 reboot doing the same configuraiont, I would try to log back on and it would say that my account has been locked and to see my system administrator. I've also did a factory reset and would close the configuration window and did alot of windows updates. it would reboot and do other updates when it rebooted one time and said that my account was locked like I said above. I don't know what else to do. If somebody is able to help me I would definitely appreciate it.

All of a sudden, every time I boot, the desktop icons and background come up normally, and the mouse icon moves - but NOTHING on the desktop that I click on works. The mouse arrow becomes a hour glass on the blue bar at the bottom. No new software or hardware.
The ONLY way to recover is to go to safe mode and restore to an earlier time. Interestingly, even if the restore says it was NOT successful to an earlier time and unchanged, the machine then works normally (until the next reboot). I've done: sfc scannow, crapcleaner, utility drive and registry scans, antivirus scans, chkdsk, etc - no help. I've looked carefully at ipconfig, but only the bare bones usual stuff is there. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Thank you.

A:xp SP3 startup freezes at desktop

Morning SS, From what you've told me I would say one of two things has happened here. Either your computer is infected by malware/adware, or it did a windows update recently. Either way looks like your infected LOL as these stupid updates seem to be a virus sometimes. I know you said you've run your antivirus scan but in alot of cases those scans won't find these stupid bugs because they hide themselves in a legit Win file by some very clever programing. Here's what I'd suggest you do. 1). Follow the instructions that i've posted below so that our security experts can help you to clear anything from your computer that may be causing this problem. 2). If they give you the all clear, then I would perform a clean boot to narrow down the service or program causing this issue.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum, not here.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

If you don't post the required logs, it will slow them down with getting any help.

If I left-click on the desktop it greys out with the shortcut icons visible behind the veil. My only option is to hard power-off. Most often, the next time I boot up everything's fine, and there's no complaint from the system about Windows not having shut down normally when I hard powered-off.

Look in msconfig and see what you have in Startup and in NON Microsoft Services. Also look in Schedule and see if any thing is scheduled at Startup. This should help.

I've been having these problems for probably 4 months now and nobody can figure out what is wrong with my computer. It's the most annoying thing ever. This desktop I have is not even a year old. I can just being surfing the web and it'll just all of a sudden freeze up for no apparent reason. The mouse arrow does that little circle thing like it's busy and then it just completely freezes up. I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. This happens at least 3-4 times a day.

Then about every 2 weeks or so, my computer decides to restart on its own. It'll be working fine and then all of a sudden I hear the fan or motor or something get louder and it restarts. And it is not low on memory or anything. It has plenty of memory. This happens probably every 2-3 weeks and if I leave it on, it'll continue restarting every 20-30 minutes. So I usually just turn it off for a day or so and then it's better usually. At least for another 2 weeks or so.

I seriously feel like throwing this computer out the window sometimes! It drvies me absolutely insane! Please help me!

I can only boot in safe mode and have tried stopping from starting them using autoruns.
I downloaded a removal tool from symantec site but connot run this in safe mode.

You could try System Restore in Safe Mode - then use the Norton uninstall tool.

2. At the command prompt, type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and press Enter.
3. Follow the instructions given to perform the System Restore process.

Hi there,

A friend of mine recommended I seek help from you guys for a possible malware/virus problem. I am running Windows XP Pro, version 2002, Svp 3. My pc is a ThinkPad Laptop ( circa 2006 ) running thru a docking station to an LG L226WTQ Flatron monitor.

My problem is that the desktop will freeze sporadically ( at least I cannot find a pattern so far ) and I'll have to reboot. Some times it's a total freeze in which the keyboard and mouse are frozen too. Some times I can use the mouse and keyboard but nothing of substance will happen. I can click on the start button, for example, and see the list of items but cannot get any of those to run. I can enter CTRL-ALT-DEL, click on the task mgr button but the task mgr will not display. I was able to do this with freecell earlier today after I had opened the task mgr immediately upon reboot. I clicked the start button, then freecell ( purely for 'research' purposes, of course ). Freecell did not come up on the display, but I did see freecell listed in the processes tab of task mgr. Makes me think that some times the apps are starting but not able to communicate with windows.

I have attached here the hijackThis log I generated a few minutes ago.

Thanks for your help!

A:XP desktop freezes sporadically

You've explained it pretty well, we have lots of info to work with already.

Now, was there anything installed on the machine just before this issue started?
Were there any downloads you can remember to have happened prior to this occurrence?
Did the machine become unresponsive while online or not?

Are you able to connect to the internet?
Have you tried any Windows repair procedures, such as chkdsk, sfc /scannow, system restore?
Have you attempted safe mode yet?
I won't bore you with any more questions for now, it's just that I need a bit more info to plan my approach to the issue.

A:internet freezes desktop

Are you running the most up to date Internet Explorer (IE8)?

If so and you still find IE freezing, this troubleshooting guide should help you:
Run your anti-virus and an anti-spyware, to check for malware infections. Microsoft Security Essentials is a good freeware AV from Microsoft.
2. Clear Cache. Or else run your Junk Cleaner or CCleaner. In IE 7 or 8, click Tools > Internet options > Security > Reset all Zones to Default level
3. If still you find your IE giving problems, close it and run IE (No Add-ons). This opens up the browser without loading any add-ons, toolbars or plug-ins.
4. Run sfc /sc?annow and at the end reboot if asked for. This will replace corrupted system files if any.
If you find it running OK, then the problem is most probably caused by an addon. In that case you have two options :
- Use the manage Add-ons tool, and disable each one after the other to find out which one is causing the problem.
- In Internet Options, go to Advanced Tab and click on Reset tab. Restart IE. This step deletes all temp files, disables any add-ons, plug-ins, toolbars and also resets all changed settings to default. Although this is a quick-fix, you will have to re-install the add-ons.

I hope this helps!

I hope this is the correct forum to post this on.

I have a PC at home that I set-up Remote Desktop on. When I connect from outside it will work good for a little time. Then the PC just freezes. I can't do anything until I do a hard restart on the box.

Just for testing I setup a laptop at home with Remote Desktop. When I accessed that from outside it works great. No freezing or anything. So I am thinking that its a problem with the PC. But thats as far as I got.

Any idea what is causing the PC to freeze???????????????

A:Remote Desktop Freezes

When using remote desktop try not to have any heavy processes (on the remote box) running like a webcam or game running etc. Also I find it helps to hide your desktop icons and get rid of fancy wallpapers etc. Also check your other PC's firewall configuration, try disabling etc and just generally playing around.

OS: Vista Business SP2
Make: HP Probook 4510s

Just go get one thing straight, I had this problem before and fixed it by uninstalling my antivirus, which was causing a conflict with vista. So if anyone can point we towards a list of programs which cause conflicts with vista, I would be much appreciated. As such, I've ruled out that this is a virus (there have been no changes, as far as I can tell, to any files/settings) or hardware (The computer is almost brand new and was working fine this morning).

How it happened: I was killing time, playing dragon age origins (at a very good speed, with no slow down), when my computer suddenly froze. Nothing would work, not crt+alt+delete or anything, so I decided to restart and left my computer. I come back, log on, then leave it again. I return to find it with a black screen. Restart, log on, desktop loads but my taskbar stops loading programs after my battery indicator comes on. I click on the taskbar, frozen. Restart, move mouse over task bar, freezes. Restart, open task manager, no programs are eating cpu or physical memory, move over taskbar, frozen. Each time it froze it would switch to a black screen after a couple minutes.

A:Vista freezes on desktop

I finally got an error message when trying to log on, "oxc0000006". I've also used a variety of cleaners, which now allows me to get onto my account not through safe mode and use programs, but everything goes so slow that when ever my msn turns on, it freezes.

I haven't had this problem earlier. Since about a month ago, I have to restart my computer twice. Every time I restart, without exception, my computer freezes about 20 seconds after it gets to the desktop.

I have to hold down the power button until my computer turns off and turn it back on. Then my computer works perfectly, with absolutely no hitches.

I hadn't installed anything new then, it just started happening. It's not malware, since I scanned my computer with ZoneAlarm and MSE and nothing was found.

tl;dr I have to restart my computer twice, because it freezes soon after it gets to the desktop the first time.

Yesterday, I installed McAfee VirusScan Plus onto my computer, all went well, until after installation, it required to sign into McAfee. At that point, everything seemed to freeze up. I restarted my computer, and everything loads up fine, until my screen turns black, then everything seemed to become inactive. I'm not sure, but everytime i turn on my computer that happens.
