Completed all self-help tutorials, still have rootkit

Q: Completed all self-help tutorials, still have rootkit

Hello,

Had the "Security Center" come up on this computer...got rid of it using the tutorials on this site, along with trying all the other suggestions for removing rootkits that may be causing the redirects. Some solutions seem to run their course, others don't. Still having issues: browser redirects, browsers stop working, MBAM errors, Start menu blank, "waiting for background programs to end" on shutdown.

So, not sure where to go from here. Help please.

***EDIT**** Could someone please look at the info below and let me know if I should be worried about passwords being compromised? I have reformatted the drive, so I don't need help with removal, but I want to make sure I'm not in trouble some other way. ThanksHey guys, I'm hoping you can help me out. I've gone through the prep, however I was not able to activate the windows Firewall. I have unplugged the PC from the internet and I'm using a flash drive to move files and logs back and fourth to another PC to post on here.Initially I was infected with Digital protection and Internet Security XP. I used malwarebytes to remove both of those, but I'm still infected. Sites are re-directing and I received a warning from ATT today that my pc is being used to send spam. I would just reformat my PC but it's about 5 years old Compaq Presario and I've lost the recovery disk, so I don't have an OS. I've already run malwarebytes, combofix, Spybot.

The winfiles and Pe-files attachments are from rootkitty running on ubcd4win, although they could possibly have been modified by the rootkit before uploading, as I uploaded them from the infected machine.

Hi, Since this is related to Software Development, I am requesting an moderator to move this thread.

Apart from that, it could be easier if you mention the VB Version you need to learn.

So, I'm a newbie to computer security, but it's definately an interesting subject. I see all of these gurus around these boards helping everyone they possibly can.

So where exactly did these gurus learn their tricks? I don't know, but I'd like to.

With my computer experience in programming and networking I've noticed the best and usually only way is to read, read, and read more. I didn't figure this as an exception. So, I'd like to suggest some tutorials. And also, list books if you can (I'll just read the tut.s to hold me down until I get one).

Here are the subjects I'd like to expand on:

The Registry
HiJackThis
Trojans

Thanks to those that can help.

Like many of you...I have never taken the time to visit the tutorials available here at BC which cover various questions/points which some of us have.Until today .http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/...-Z-title-0.htmlI sincerely urge all of you who are not familiar with this resource...to take a few minutes and scroll through the list of topics which are covered. If you see somthing that you feel might be beneficial or interesting to delve into later...just go to that topic and then add that webpage to your favorites.I have an extended list of such references (almost 1,000) which I keep in a folder marked Computer Help in my Favorites and I find that doing this saves me a lot of time in seeking information that might help someone or myself.Louis

I followed the advice in Tutorials "How to update a Windows hardware driver" Using the prog recommended, it showed 41 good drivers and 17 bad drivers.
Using Device Manager I right clicked each item and 'updated drivers'. Every one came back saying ?The wizard could not find a better match?.?
I looked up one manufacturers web site and found updates but none related to my hardware
So the question is. Are they out of date, or not?

A:Tutorials

Most likely if they are working you shoudn't need to update them. The only reason to update your drivers is if certain components on the computer are not working correctly.

A:where or where can the tutorials be...?

First, go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx and select your version of Office to browse for downloads.
There is an add-in called Analysis Tool Pack that runs a number of statistical tasks, including standard deviation.
For tutorials, here are some sites to try:

There are many more - just Google for them

Send etc. etc.
Make it easier to find what you're looking for. I was going to point someone towards a Tut here put gave up. Was easier to write it myself.

Hello,
I've been perusing through all the different topics and didn't see one that would encompass general PC maintenance to improve speed and start-up time? I know in working in the technology field, that is probably the most common question I get from friends and family. "My PC is so slow, what can I do"? I generally advise them the usual of ridding of junk files using the CCleaner utility, un-checking unnecessary items from the startup, and defragging if need be. Not sure if this is the best advice, but a good start nonetheless. Does anyone know if there is a good general PC maintenance tutorial on here or another site that would provide easy to follow steps for the average user on things they can do periodically to help improve the PC's speed on startup and in general?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nate

Hello everyone!

Im developing a set of Operating System (OS) development tutorials. It is aimed to the
novice OS developer, and explaines everything in detail, while still being very easy
to follow.

This series follows a step by step approch, and builds a small 32 bit x86-compatible
(Possibly graphical) operating system.

It uses C and x86 assembly language.

If anyone is interested in OS development, or OS's in detail, heres the base site...

As a technology teacher I have written tutorials for the students to follow while using new software in school. Some I have written in Word and some in Coral. What I need to know is how to convert these files into Tutorials like the ones used in 'real' applications, without toolbars ect. and with just a 'next' and 'back' button to turn the pages. What sort of files are 'real' tutorials and can I change the files I have written into the same format. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use MS Project at work, a lot. Being self taught, I dont know as much as I would like to, but unfortunately it seems I know more than anyone else there! I have applied for training through the company, but its taking forever, and our IT dept know as much about project as I do about little green men from mars. SO, I am looking for any tutorials available free to learn more, specifically with regard to resourcing and viewing resources.

Not sure if I have put this in the right place but here goes
1. Browser Choice. In Europe we get this option. But when it is taken (I stayed with IE10) the Browser Choice App remains and I cant get rid of it. There seems to be no means to uninstall it. Tried various sites on the web nothing works.
2. In the useful tutorial on backup using W7 recovery in Control Panel there is an option to backup system image to an external drive. I have one @1Tb but it starts then says cant proceed drive full - when it clearly is not. Any ideas? Is it not possible to backup the system image to SkyDrive ?
3. I do not use the Start Screen (Metro) as such but do put into it useful stuff that I need at odd times eg Administrative Tools. There seems to be no way to resize or recolour the tiles apart from "large" or "small". This is a nuisance as it gets too big to fit the screen. I found a site on the web that says it does this but my Rapport tells me it is unsafe so I have not tried it.
4. Is there a way to sort a block on the start screen(Metro) alphabetically without dragging tiles around one at a time.
5. A tutorial on each of these would be grand. I have found tutorials truly useful generally.
Thanks
Brian Winch

I tried to remove with anti-spyware of different types that I've had good luck with in the past. Now the computer has really gotten infected. I've tried using HJT, Maleware and others as the tutorials have mentioned. When I use them for the first time they will start then get killed off. When try to start from desktop after being saved after first initial setup it comes up error on all the anti-virus, and spyware, etc. that I've tried. Also task manager will not come up stating the administrator has turned off my access but I'm the administrator. Anyone ever heard of this? Thank you in advance!

This is what I recommend, other geeks might tell you something else.

Start with reading the following articles and tutorials:
Object-oriented programming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaGetting started developing apps for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8How to start developing apps for Windows 8 - CNEThttps://dev.windows.com/en-us/getstartedDesign for Windows Runtime apps ? Windows app development

Then go to Windows App Studio - Microsoft. After signing in to App Studio with a Microsoft Account you can start playing, testing various samples and see how an app is done and generated.

To publish Windows / Windows Phone apps you need a so called Windows Developer Account. See the prices and other info here: Account types, locations, and fees - Windows app development.

A nice, easy to learn tool to find out if you could be an app developer is Microsoft Project Siena. Read more and download Siena: Microsoft Project Siena (Beta)

My problems started when i had to do a fresh load of windows 8 because of a failed HDD(unrecoverable/unimagable).
-Ive replaced my OEM HDD with an Intel solid state.
-My computer is a Dell Inspiron (14z -5423) which came with windows 8, if it matters.

I installed the solid state hdd and loaded windows 8 without any issues, even did all the updates though windows 8.1 without a single hitch. Then i realized i installed windows 8 without secure boot enabled, which is an issue for me because of a project im working on that requires secure boot to be enabled. So i decided to do a fresh reload once again, this time with secure boot enabled and this is when the problems started.

First i could not make it all the way though the fresh install even though i did a delete partitions, format partitions, and even a cmd line diskpart/clean/format from the windows 8 cd's repair option. I then tried wiping the drive with Acronis to be sure no old files were corrupting the new install. Still the install would fail. I was repeatedly receiving an error message saying "windows could not update the computer's boot configuration." Eventually i discovered formatting the drive and deleting all partitions using Partition Magic would allow me to do a clean install of widows 8 without any more issues.

Now that windows 8 was installed once again i started doing updates which went well up to the windows 8.1 update. Upon restarting(by itself) after the installed updates were completed the ... Read more

A:8.1 update fails, gone through many tutorials, need help!

SOLVED: Finally windows 8.1 installed on my laptop. Im not sure if i would call this a fix or not but after installing an (ironically out of date) app, the app prompted me it needed to to update to .Net 3.5, after doing so i decided to try to install Windows 8.1 once more and to my amazement it worked. I find it odd that if windows 8.1 requires .NET 3.5 that windows updates does not show you the available update. If installing the .NET framework had nothing to do with Windows installing then maybe my persistence of repeated install attempts paid off. Either way its working and im happy. Hope this helps someone else with similar problems.

Waht are some of the best books and sites to learn how to program C++ and VB for a beginner in programming, but not in HTML and stuff liek that that i already know. thanx

A:Best Books/Tutorials To Learn C++ and VB

To start with VB, I used Learn Visual Basic 6 in 21 days, then later used More Visual Basic 6 in 21 days. After I finished with both these, I used some How To books which were specifically for a particular topic like Database How To and one General VB 6 How To.

I think by the time you are thru with these books, you won't need any further books and MSDN would suffice.

Learning thru net and sites is okay, but books are better. If you are new to programming, I would suggest start with VB and leave C++ for some other day. Learn to swim in a swimming pool and then go for the ocean

I want to learn windows 7 and hopefully et a certificate someday. I want to get into IT. when I go to start, and I click on default programs or all the programs in start, is there a tutorial for each one and in order? I get really confused with this stuff. I wish it were more Barney style. For an example, a tutorial that goes to start ,then it goes through each one, one by one and explains them, from the list to the other side of where the control panel is, default programs etc. everything seems so thrown together and you click on one. A:Mobo Replacement Tutorials

Ariesjill: Both tutorials are good and should get the job done.
Just be sure that you use only the correct # of standoffs and that they are in the correct place.
I always install the CPU/hsf on the board outside the box so that I have all the room I need to install the mobo.
Some cases are so small that it is advisable to remove drives, PSU, etc., so you have room to move around in the box.
Have fun.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I broke up the Windows tutorials into their own sections for each version of Windows. This should make it easier for people to find the Windows tutorials that they are looking for instead of them being lumped altogether. For the Windows 8 tutorials, we now have this separate category:Windows 8 TutorialsYou can also subscribe to the tutorials rss feed to see any new tutorials that are created:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/feed/The feed is all combined and not broken out by category.Hope this helps.

Our small team (less than 10 members) recently upgraded to a hosted Exchange setup, 2007 to be exact.

There are tons of articles on installing and supporting Exchange, but I can't seem to find one for a company actually using Exchange. We are mainly interested in sharing contacts, calendars, and other basic features. So far, we're just plodding around blindly and finding it confusing.

Can someone point me to some basic how-to's, or outline some basic steps here?

PS Thanks for this awesome site!

Anyone know how to create the video tutorials where your walking someone through how to do something in Windows? I have Flash 8 Pro (but never used it) and would be fine with downloading a program if someone knew of something. I'm trying to do a short tutorial for a friend on how to upload images into a gallery.

I seen yesterday that a buddy of mine has windows 7 64-bit. I wanted to do one of my favorite tweaks I learned here. The Change the Maximum Download Sessions in Internet Explorer or all Browsers. I used the 64-bit allotted slot and afterwards checked, and it was ok but, I have many notes that I have taken from this site and was sitting there thinking... This one I just did should be ok but I'm not sure I should try and apply what I have in these notes because, I acquired them from here. He has 4 GB so size tweaks aren't an issue but, is QoS in 7 enabled by default? and is it set at 20% like vista? I had to leave, so I didn't get a chance to look. There having slow download problems and just purchasing this HP system 3 or 4 months ago, shouldn't be having this problem. My mothers has the same set-up and uses it for home use only... as do they. Any ideas? If so, I will have to apply them at a later date because they live some distance away... Thanks

I forgot to ask... I think I read that this allocated bandwidth is used for higher priority downloads like updates from Microsoft. If that's true.. I need to look else-where.

A:Can tutorials A to Z in the vista forum apply to 7

depends how your quality of service on your router is set up. Most of the tweaks apply to windows 7, it is just the method that gets the tweak applied is usually different. If you want windows 7 tweaks go to: Windows 7 Forums for windows 7 tweaks

hello,

HD partition tutorials show different setups than mine so need to figure how to make changes. tutorials all show disk 0 and disk one but in my computer management I only have disk 0 and no disk 1. so would i first click on C and shrink that volume? this will create empty space to make the new partition which will be used for data files? Or is there a tutorial that has pics like my system.

Thanks!

Msongs

A:partition HD questions - tutorials differ....

I would suggest using Gparted to delete all partition, the create a partition about 70 GB in size.

When you get back into Windows, you can go to Disk management and format the unallocated partition.

The reason i say this is because Windows cannot shrink the partition to that small of a size,

I also recommend you install all your 3rd party apps on the D: or E: drive

Download GParted:

I have been working on an idea to create free video tutorials on how to do basic and advanced tasks in both Windows 7 and Windows 8. I have already produced a number of videos, but I would like to know what people are interested in and to have your ideas on what the next videos I create should be. Please let me know what you think would be useful to other people or what you would like to be shown how to do in Windows 7/8. Please post your ideas below and message me if you would like to see the videos I have created so far. (or just go to windowsguide.info)

A:I'm creating Win Video Tutorials, what topic should I do?

I would love to see a video tutorial along the lines of Adding Windows 7 64 bit to a PC with Windows 8 Preloaded. I have done many multi-boot systems in the past, but they were all on MBR/BIOS based systems. This EUFI/GPT stuff is new to me. From what I've seen it can be very easy to run the Windows 7 installer and totally hose your GPT setup.

I'm talking systems with a sing physical conventional HD, or "spinner" as they call them these days.

Hey all,

Anyone know of any good tutorials to brush up on setting up video conferencing. I'm trying to get better and learn how to setup using livemeeting(unless its the same as netmeeting) and any other way of setup. Also looking for a basic setup procedure for setting up say a laptop to a secondary source like a television. Should be basic info but I'm just trying to brush up on my skills.
