System Restore Error, Windows Firewall Error and a bunch of viruses

Q: System Restore Error, Windows Firewall Error and a bunch of viruses

So my laptop has a bunch of problems. It started out as a virus infection then I found out more problems.

First of all, thank you to Broni for directing me to the thread that tells me to run DSS.

I can't run a systems restore. I get the 0x800700B7 error. As well, Systems Restore says that I've never had a Systems Restore done before, which I think is odd, because I recall seeing Systems Restores created last time I checked (maybe a year ago?)

I also can't turn on Windows Firewall. I get the "Windows can't start the Mpssvc" message.

Here's my AVIRA log:

Hello guys,
I have tried everything I found online and failed. I don't wanna do a clean install. I have attached the CheckSur.log. Please help.

A:Windows update error 80070002 and System restore error (Both)

I was getting that same error - and saying "cannot search for updates".

I tried the Fixit tool and command prompts - suggested by Microsoft - nothing worked.

I finally called Microsoft - 1 - 800 - Microsoft and they did a remote on my comp and the problem is solved, at least for now.

There is no charge for this service.

As for System Restore, make sure you have set a Restore Point.
Go to Start and type system restore.
Go to " Create a restore point".

See if your C drive says "on" and if not click Configure.

Lately I started to have an issue with my laptop.  (HP Pavillion g7 series) The sound would pretty much just quit.  So I googled around and found that it was perhaps from a recent update from Windows 7.  So I did a system restore to an earlier date. Seemed to fix the sound problem, but now Firefox won't work.

I open it and it won't go to any websites.  IE works, so it's not the internet connection.  Firefox tells me that it may be a firewall problem, or proxy.

I googled some more.  Tried turning windows firewall off, no changes. Changed to no proxy, no changes. I even added Firefox to the list of programs to be allowed through the firewall, no changes.

Then I uninstalled firefox. NOW I can't even reinstall it.  *sigh*  Googled again, perhaps a malware?

I dunno any more.

HELP.

A:System Restore and now a bunch of trouble

If IE works, can you go to 'Mozilla.com' and download the Firefox installer ?  Put it in 'Downloads' or 'Desktop' then try double clicking on it. Will it run ?

If it doesn't, then it is possible you have a malware problem. Go to this link and download Malwarebytes to your 'Desktop' -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/

Then double click on it to run it and see if it will run and update. If it does, run a scan with it any way. If it doesn't run, or will not download, post back and tell us what happened, or didn't and we can take it from there.

I have my recovery discs but since i uninstalled nero my drive can not read dvds, just cds. Been working on this for 3 days with little sleep, trying to get the boot to recognize my touchpad driver.

here's a link to my previous hijack this log from when the system was nice....well i'll post it if u ask. Its an HP Pavillion Media Center edition 6000v

if anyone could walk me through installing a keyboard driver from a boot disk i'd appreciate it.

I'm going insane here, and even if i ordered the windows xp installation disc from HP, chances are i couldn't read it from disk.

Good afternoon (from my point of view) - again!I have already used this forum when I messed up some HW stuff. And have been very grateful for your help. Now, it seems to be some malware...It's been only 2 days since I started the martyrdom of downgrading my HP Pavilion dv6560ec to Win xp. I've been downloading and installing the necessary drivers, as the HP doesn't support XP on the machines, as I learned later. Now, being almost done, I got this warning everytime I wanted to open IE 6.0.2900 (have SP3):CRITICAL ERROR! OK I am having major problms with System Restore for my HP Pavilion Windows 7 Home Premium desktop PC. Here's wht happens-

If I try and create a restore point I get Error 0x8004231F insufficient storage space for shadow copy. RAM is over 800 megs.

There are no restore points and I cannot create any more either.

I also get these errors from time to time when trying to system restore-

Error 0x80073AFD and Error 0x8000FFFF Missing MUI File(s) but what MUI Files are missing or how I can find them and reinstall the damned things it does not tell me!

I use Norton SS and various other security softwares. One other post here suggested upgrading my Real Player which I did and although it's a nicer player and i like it better it did nothin to allow me to find my shadow copy pages or fix my restore points issue or even allow me to use system restore.

I had a problem with Norton which came up with false readings under registry issues and an Error 2147212513 could not create a restore point in system restore. They did try and fix my PC and I think they screwed up system restore when they did but they of course deny it! Can someone PLEASE tell me what the oni to do to get my system restore back up and running again and how to make it create restore points and how to do this shadow copy crap?? Thanks I hope- keimanzero

I was Stumbling the other day when all of the sudden my screen filled up with dozens of error messages and my laptop froze up and shut down. I currently own a Dell Laptop runnings Windows 7, purchased almost a year ago. Usually if something like this happens I just use system restore, however when I try and do it it shows me -system-restore-error-0x8000ffff -Corrupt Hard Drive- when the computer boots back up after going through the restore process. Ever since this happened none of my programs appear on my computer like Microsoft Word for example. When I go to the Start tab all my old file folders are completely empty. I read somewhere that I might need to re-install windows however I purchased the lap top directly through dell and I never got the installation CD. I feel like I have tried everything and I cannot figure this out. Someone please help! I am including the DDS.txt and Attach.zip in the post.

Hi, hoping you can help....

I attempted to do a system restore as my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-NW26M) was very slow and the internet browser was not working. No scans or diagnostics showed up any problems.

Halfway through the system restore the laptop crashed and restarted. I was then confronted with the error message
"Bootmgr missing, press Ctrl+alt+del"

I tried to boot the laptop using a recovery disc, however I get as far as the blue welcome screen and I get the error 0x4001100200001012 - the computer then restarts.

I am not bothered about any of the data - I have backed it all up. Any ideas more than welcome as to how to get it up and running again.....FAR too stressful!

Are you familiar with using the Recovery options on the Windows 7 disk to get to the command prompt?
If so you can restore the bootmgr. Did you try "Startup Repair"?

I have had a problem with windows vista coming up with an error and not starting up. I have figured out how to fix this and since it has been appearing on forums i thought it would be a good idea to put a fix for it here.
If you have this problem with system restore coming up with this message:

There was an unexpected error

The file name, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect
(0x8007007B)
System restore will now close

Don't panic, check on your computer if you have two hard drives (partitioned into 2) one default named as Partition 1 and the other should be named as Recovery. Go to start click on Computer then click system properties along the toolbar. Then go to system protection and look under the heading system restore points, uncheck the Recovery drive and check partition one (the hard drive which your OS is stored on) Then system restore will work properly and all you have to do is create your restore point from the same screen.

I couldn't find any other fixes on the internet so i hope this comes in useful,
Regards
Alastair

Hi all,

Huge problem regarding permissions on my (massively unstable) PC. I try to run ANYTHING including .dlls with admin permissions and i get a nice little "ding", and error message regarding the relevent .dll and File system error -1073741792, including one just before I get to the logon screen (think it was called "WINMM.dll", which yes, is "microsoft mouse", but my mouse still appears to be working sooooo... confused... lol).

Also, when i try to system restore, I get an unspecified error, code (0x8000ffff). I don't get anymore info, it just apparently can't do it.

All this came about when i started my PC up after changing/installing NOTHING (since it last worked perfectly), and it randomly said the disk integrity of C: (64GB kingston SSD running the OS but no installed programs) had to be checked, before several black screens of text whizzed by, deleting and then repairing registry entries. It has done this once before, (completely different symptoms, but same root cause of this windows integrity checker thingy), but i fixed it by transferring my account files to a new account, deleting the old one, and presto, instant new admin profile with full permissions again, but problem is, what with nothing that requires admin status working, I can't create a new account this time.

If anything seems unclear about what I've just written, please ask, and I'll clarify, but I've been battling with this all day, and need to get some rest befor I ... Read more

My internet explorer was not loading up although everything else on my computer was working properly. I downloaded explorer 7 using Mozilla. My c drive did not have enough space for explorer 7. As a result I restarted my computer, and windows explorer will not load up. I tried starting the system restore tool at a command prompt in windows XP but I do not have enough memory to run the system restore. It says I need 200 mb. and I cant clear away any space. Does anyone have nay suggestions? I have an external hardrive, but can't figure out a way to transfer from my c drive to the external harddrive.
Thanks!

Hello all,

I am new to this forum but I have been looking quite extensively through existing threads to hopefully find an answer to such a ridiculous problem (i.e. I've done my reading). With that said, I have attempted some of the advice that some of you have offered but to no avail.

So this is my situation: I have been trying to restore my Windows 8.1 64 bit PC to an earlier date, prior to installing Lenovo Power Manager 7.0 (Windows 7 version) on my Lenovo T450s . Although it has been running quite fine at times in Windows 7 Compatibilty mode, it still has issues as it doesn't remember my battery settings when I bring the PC back from hibernate mode. Anyway, I can't uninstall it the traditional way (i.e. there is no uninstall option) and don't want it on my PC anymore; so System Restore is my only desirable option at this point as I would prefer not to have to "Refresh" or Reset it back to manufacturer settings. However, System Restore is not working (this is my first time trying to use it). Every time that I try to, I get an error that "system restore could not be completed and nothing was changed", blah, blah, blah with an error code 0x80070571. [BTW, initially, the error code was 0x80070005 but through all the tweaking/changes I've attempted so far, somehow it evolved to the other.]

These are the measures I have taken with unsuccessful results:
1) System Restore in Clean Boot and in Safe Mode (through the "Shift+Restart" advanced opt... Read more

A:Windows 8.1 System Restore failing, error 0x80070571

I'm not sure what good a system restore is, if you couldn't uninstall in the first place. It seems Power Manager 7 was for Windows 7 and below so it may not be working in compatibility mode. There are a few topics on this in Lenovo forums. Have you tried this, to uninstall ?

Run "C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallShield Installation Information\{DAC01CEE-5BAE-42D5-81FC-B687E84E8405}\Setup.exe" -l0x9 -AddRemove from an administrative command prompt. or in C:\swtools\readyapps\pwrmgrv directory Command line: "c:\swtools\readyapps\pwrmgrv\setup.exe -l0x9 -AddRemove"

If this works, there is a Lenovo Power Manager driver for T450S Windows 8.1 here. If not, you may be able to install it over the 7 driver and it may uninstall the old version for you - Lenovo Power Management Driver for Windows 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Laptop - Lenovo Support (US)

Hi, I'm having this problem every time I try and run system restore from the Windows Recovery Environment (F8).

This started after I extended my System Reserved partition from 100 to 200mb using Easeus Partition Master 9 . I did this because I kept getting an error when trying to run System Image Backup

The full error message I get is this:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

Details:
System Restore failed while scanning the file system on the drive D:\
The drive might be corrupt. You might want to retry System Restore after running chkdsk/R on this disk.

I have tried doing a startup repair and it found no errors. I have also tried chkdsk /R on all partitions and tried the SFC which found no errors.

I was also getting this error when i tried to run system restore from within windows but I found a hotfix from microsoft which solved that issue. So it's just the problem running it from Windows RE now.

Can anyone please help with this? As I am unsure how to fix it.

Hey guys and gals,

I am new to the forum, (please be gentle), so I wanted to start off, 1st, by saying Hello to everyone out there, and in here.

Now on to the issue I have run into.

** I am currently running WIN 7 Ultimate 64 Bit RTM **

Every single time I try to use system restore, it comes back with the exact same error, on reboot:

{"System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

Unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0xc0000043)"}
I have tried different system restore points, (within Windows), but it does not seem to fix the issue.

I have also tried disabling my security software, (KIS 2010), and that doesn't seem to help either.

The puzzling thing is that when I run system restore in safe mode it seems to work no problem, but it just will not work within windows itself, (normal boot).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

I recently downloaded divx, it was a nightmare to uninstall, so on the advice of a forum I used revo uninstaller to get rid of it. When I then uninstalled revo it all went wrong.

I'm not very good with computers, so bear with me. My internet now says it isn't connected when it is, a lot of my control panel isn't working, and my sound card wont play on spotify. I attempted system restore but it comes up with unexpected error 0x80042302.

I'm very worried about this as I'm not sure what to do and I need my computer for work.

I found this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/968500-solved-windows-update-windows-system.html

Where someone seemed to have the same problem and it was solved by 'reinstalling.' Forgive my ignorance, but does that mean reinstalling windows 7? and if so, how do I go about uninstalling it first? and would I need an external hard drive? I'm having such a nightmare and would be very grateful if anyone could help me.

I don't know if it's relevant but I have Windows 7, 64 bit, and Norton.

Thanks in advance

I have seen solutions to this error when it occurs during creation of a System Image, but I receive it when running a restore of a system image.  Here are the parameters of the problem:
System: Getac rugged laptop with SSD fitted in place of an HDD.  It was running Windows 7 with SP1 before the failed restore.
The System boots using Windows repair disk, but the OS has been trashed by failed restore, so normal boot brings up a missing OS error.
The System image is held on 3 DVDs.
Invoking System restore prompts for DVD #3 to identify the restorable images.
Selecting image for restore prompts for DVD #1.
Approx. 20 mins and 20% into restore, the error message 'Windows backup error accessing remote shared folder 0x8078015B' displays and the restore bombs out.
This process is 100% repeatable and is not dependent on whether the 'reformat and repartition' check box is checked or clear.
There is only one image on the DVD set from which to select the image to restore.
As the BIOS had been updated to lock down (disable) Bluetooth and WiFi for use in a secure environment, the BIOS has been returned to factory defaults in case this was the cause of the problem.

Hello Bleeping Computer Gurus & other frustrated PC users...

In Brief:

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Pavillion dv6 HP laptop. I let Windows Update do its thing late last night before I went to sleep (ie: finish installing updates and shut down computer)...when I turned it on today, I got a BSOD - the details: "driver_irql_not_less_or_equal", with a stop error of 0x000000D1, and "ndis.sys" as the file mentioned. The laptop then goes into restart mode, where it goes back to this BSOD, in a loop. I used F8 to get into safe mode, tried to do a System Restore. When it reboots, it goes back into the BSOD loop. So, I enter safe mode again, and get an error message from System Restore saying that it can't finish, b/c it "can't access a file", and give me an error code of 0 x 80070005. I disable my anti-virus software (kaspersky), as the error message suggests, start all over, but get nowhere. I have run scans to test the memory, all is fine. I can't get networking to work in safe mode. I can't get /scannow to work in safe mode. I can't manage to utilize the suggestions I've found on the web b/c I can't run windows normally, just in safe mode.

HELP. ME. PLEASE.

Thanks.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1540 using Windows Vista (32bit I think) and it's been giving a lot of trouble. I decided to wipe the whole computer and start all over, and I have all the discs to go with it.

I have tried to follow the instructions in the manual that came with the computer to do 'Factory Image restore' but after it says to select 'repair your computer' the 'system recovery options' should appear where I should be able to proceed by entering language, then typing ADMINISTRATOR. But this window doesn't appear.
Another window opens instead saying 'Windows error recovery' , and gives an option to open with Windows vista, Windows vista (Yes, twice!!) or safe mode.

Is there another way of wiping the computer to factory settings? Or another way to get to 'system recovery options' so I can continue with the factory image restoration? I have backed up everything so I have nothing to lose, and have all the discs (Operating system, drivers, etc).
I have managed to fix my last laptop by doing a full wipe and reboot, but this is beyond me. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated!

Today I had a real problem with my Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] account, that caused it to freeze after only 8 of 20 Tasks had been completed in the download process.

After aborting the Live Mail download, I clicked the Errors tab, and was presented with the following Error Message;

I did a Google search for Windows Live Mail Error 0x800C006F, and this is the nearest 'non-solution' that it came up with;

Windows Live Mail Desktop Stuck at Check for new messages on 'Account Name'

I too, attempted to clear the problem with three re-boots of my Laptop...all unsuccessful, and very frustrating.

In desperation and as a last resort, I decided to complete a full System Restore back to the most recent Restore Point [because it was set at an earlier point, prior to the time that the Error Issue surfaced] in my System.

The System Restore was successful, my Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] Accounts have all been fully restored, and are now back to full working order.

I hope that this fix method helps anybody who is hit with the same Error message in their Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] account.

A:Windows Firewall error 0x8007042c + error 1068 (manually starting)

Welcome to the WSF, Junyahh!

Please use the following diagnostic tool. It has a powerful detection mechanism, and may help us get to the cause of your issues:

Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool.
Download: Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Download
Select the version that applies to your system.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double-click the downloaded file to run it.

When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
At the program's console, press the Scan button.

When done, the tool produces a log, FRST.txt, in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

Also, use the Farbar Service Scanner
Download: Downloading Farbar Service Scanner

Let's get a view of all services and dependencies scoped by the tool...
Make sure the following options are checked:

Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender

Press: Scan

When done, FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.

Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

Thank you.

Mod Edit: Moved from Win8 to the Am I Infected forum ~~boopmeI randomly decided to look at McAfee and check my settings, etc.  When looking at the main screen, everything states its on and green.  I had the most current definitions loaded.  When I checked my McAfee firewall it stated on.  When I clicked to go into the McAfee firewall, the screen then changed and said it was off.  When clicking the Turn On button, it would immediately shut off.  I searched this issue and the blogs stated to look at the Windows Firewall under Services.  When I checked, it was not there.  I did a Windows Search for it and found it.  When it opens it gives tells me I need to Update the Firewall Settings.  When I click on Use Recommended Settings it gives me an error "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.  Error Code 0x8007042c." I've checked out some of the blog discussions and followed a few thread about creating new register.bat files and running them.  I've also tried merging some .dll files also per the bloggers.  After doing these actions, the Windows Firewall now appears in my Services but when I click to start it I get the error "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall Service on Local Computer.  Error 1068:  The dependency service or group failed to start"

Hello,
I have had this error when I tried to do a system restore from the factory image on my computer. I get this error and it says the side by side configuration is incorrect. I wanted to know if this error will interfere when I restore my laptop from the discs that I made when I first got it. I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 and Windows 7.  On a side note, if microsoft office was preinstalled on my laptop, where can I find the product key so I can continue to use it again? Thank you.

This is a chonological overview of the events that brought me to a very lost and confused place.

I think the first time I started to notice any problems, it was about a month ago. ATI had some kind of new drivers to install ((which seems to spam as cli.exe in the task manager. it hogs a lot of space.)) ~ and the other thing that seemed to slow my computer down was Internet Explorer 7. At the time, I thought that maybe my old computer was so old that it couldn't run the new IE7.

But then, a week ago, I was playing World of Warcraft, and the game began to freeze up and crash. I had to reboot the machine to get out of the freeze. This happened on multiple realm/servers for the game, so I began to think it was my computer.

I had defragged my computer a few times, World of Warcraft was the largest file that I couldn't defrag.
The repair.exe file that Blizzard recommends you run first showed no signs of any issues at all.

At the 6th or 7th freeze/crash, also causing me to lose access to one of my characters that the Tech Forum guys can't even help me with ~ I checked to see what the Task Manager was doing. Warcraft was "Not Responding". CPU utilization was at 100%.

I uninstalled WoW, defragged the hard-drives, and ran Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and avast!Antivirus. Avast said there were 4 viruses, which I quarentined. I reinstalled WoW, but I was still having my freezing/crashing issues.

I ran the WoW repair.exe utility again, and according to it... Read more

Hello everyone, not sure why but I get an error every time I open the System Restore. I rarely have to use a restore point as I regularly maintain my computer and check for viruses and malware, but I would like to have the option just in case. When I open System Properties, and click the System Protection tab, I get this error and am unable to create a Restore Point. Attached is a screenshot and a DxDiag.txt. Any insight to this problem would be helpful, perhaps I have some windows feature disabled that I might need enabled, I am not sure. I recently did a complete reformat of my hard drive and a fresh install of Windows, maybe two months ago, and somewhere along the line I must have removed/disabled something I need for System Restore. Even third party maintenance software is unable to create restore points, such as TuneUp Utilities 2014, AVG Internet Security 2014, and UVK. I'm sure the fix for this is simple, I am just unaware of it. Thanks in advance.

While I am using other browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox or AOL Explorer, I will encounter Internet Explorer pop-ups. Symptoms are almost the same as when this happened last month - please see this post for further details, but in brief, this a a standalone XP computer - upon turning it on earlire today, windows firewall was turned off (I was able to enable it normally, unlike last time this happend) SEP was not visible on tray - I updated the registry taking same action as last time to remove enries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer\codeidentifiers and system restore disabled (and prior restore points were all gone) so fixed this by removing the entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore.

I was able to run a scan with SEP but cannot update the anti-virus signature definitions - it runs, but last update in January 5 - do I need to remove and reinstall?

I ran Malwarebytes successfully.

I have also run FRST scan

Attached are MBAM log and from FRST scan the FRST.txt and Addition.txt

SEP found 'conhost.exe' a 'Trojan Gen 2' and quarantined it.

Hoping you can advise on next steps to remedy this situation.

Thank you!

Hello,

Recently, I found myself unable to connect to the internet on my home computer (I'm posting from my laptop). When I try to "troubleshoot problems" from the system tray, I am told "The Diagnostics Policy Service is not running." I am given the option to "Try these repairs as an administrator". However, no changes are made when I do.

The service is set to automatic. If I try to start it in MMC, I am given the error:

"Windows could not start the Diagnostic Policy Service service on Local Computer

Error 5: Access is denied"

In addition to this, Windows Action Center began displaying an alert that the Windows Firewall is off. If I try to start it, I am given the error "Action Center can't turn on Windows Firewall." If I try the option "Turn on Windows Firewall manually", and click "Use recommended settings", I am given the error:

"Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.
Error code 0x8007042c"

At this point, I suspected a virus might be possible, so I ran Avast! (Free). The results said windows\syswow\64\wdi\perftrack\AltTab.ptxml was posibly corrupt, but found no viruses.

I tried to run system restore, but I was given the error:

Forget the folders name) and replace it with another one(Directions for the cheats said to make sure that winhttp.dll was in sys32) and while trying to do that windows would not let me so I read somewere that there is a program that lets you "take ownership of a file" so you can override permissions. I then took ownership of sys32 and maybe the 64bit folder as well. It still did not let me replace any files in sys32 so I then restarted and when windows opened again, desktop loaded then an error message came up, then it restarted itself, and repeated, but after the second time it restarted itself windows would not load. After the Acer manufacture screen, just the blank black ... Read more

Click OK to download the antispyware. Hi everyone. I'm having trouble with my Acer laptop. This is what happened. I recieved an automatic update for IE9. I tryed it out, I did not like the new settings. So, I tryed to delete it, it said that I do not have permission to do that. So I did a System Restore to go back to IE8 and it looked like it was doing it's thing. Then it went into the Blue Error Screen. I turned my laptop off and then back on after a minute or so. Everything looked ok, all the intros still come on but "Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit (Full Version) Login Screen or Welcome Screen" does not load at all. Just stays on a blank black screen with the mouse arrow. I tried using the F8 options on the laptop but they have not done anything so far. SafeMode does not work and apparently there are no Restore Points anymore. No Backups either. Command Prompt still works. I did a scan and it said there is nothing wrong but there is. Should I get the full version of Windows Vista Install Disk and use the Repair option from there? You know where the disk has options like Install, Uninstall, Repair? I'm not talking about a Recovery Disk with the same F8 options as my laptop.

A:System Restore Error

Try reinstalling System Restore.Note: this will erase any prior restore points! You may need your XP Service Pack 2 installation disk for this. If your disk is not Service Pack 2 refer to the folder mentioned below.Go to Start then click Run...paste the following command into the Run.. box:rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.infPress <enter>If the Files Needed dialog box appears, click Browse and point to the i386 folder on the Windows XP CD or to the i386 folder on the hard drive, if it exists. For systems updated with the Service Pack 2 CD or Download from Microsoft, browse to the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder. The retail version of Windows XP (SP2) also contains the latest version of the files needed. These are the files needed to perform the reinstall: FILE NAME:FILELIST.XMLRSTRUI.EXESR.SYSSRCLIENT.DLLSRDIAG.EXESRFRAME.MMFSRRSTR.DLLSRSVC.DLLSRVSVC.DLL SP2 VERSION #:5.1.2600.21805.1.2600.21805.1.2600.21805.1.2600.05.1.2600.21805.1.2600.21805.1.2600.2577When done, reboot. Check System Restore. If after reinstalling System Restore this error message is recieved, ?System restore was unable to start due to a missing Framedyn.dll. Please reinstall the application to fix this problem.? then post back here for further help.Credit where credit is due, the above info was found at http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html

Ok, I'm not a complete idiot or anything, but lemme do a lil history of my computer setup before I say anything about my problem, I just think it's a necessary thing...anyways, I'm running 2 hard drives, I have xp installed on both, but for some reason, it seems to have made themselves dependent of each other...meaning, that one will not run without the other one. Now that's all fine and dandy, until one decides to fail...so i replace the failing one, no probs ok..and make what was the master the slave to the new one..What I did was just did a complete copy of the old slave into the new hard drive and made the new hard drive the master. Still, no probs, until my old master (which is now my slave) I know, confusing, decides to fail. Which also is not a big problem right now. But, for some reason, everytime all of a sudden when I try to do a system restore, I get an error message saying this...System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience....if i send the report, I'm assuming it's sending the report, but I don't get taken to the microsoft site to see if there is a fix to this...now if i click on where it says To see what data this error report contains, I get this.......AppName: rstrui.exe then the app version, the Modname is mshtml.dll
Now, I've looked them both up and they both are connected to system restore (duh) and looked it up on the net, the only site that says anything... Read more

Hi -

The error code shown in the screenshot is exception code 0xc0000022 = STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

System Restore has been denied access to the restore point(s).

Do you have a 3rd party firewall installed, e.g., NIS, N360, KIS, McAfee, Zone Alarm, COMODO, etc...? If so, remove it using the product manudfacturer's removal tool, if available. Reboot upon completion. Install MSE

Boot into Recovery using your Windows 7 DVD or via the HDD recovery partition and run System Restore from there. The recovery environment runs under the supreme user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and should be able to bypass software restrictions.

Hello,

Since today I had some problems with my sound. I could hear myself about 5 times when I talked to friends.

Next to that there were some issues with my HDD. These errors have been resolved by typing ''chkdsk /R'' in CMD, Although it took 5 hours to complete.

But after that I still had the sound issues.

So I decided to activate System Restore. Everything went well at the start of System Restore.

It rebooted my system, initializes System Restore but after 30 seconds it says the following: ''System Restore is complete''. No way that can be done within 30 seconds.

So I waited for the system to bring me back on my desktop and there I saw the following message: ''System Restore has not been completed on C: It could missing files or the drive is damaged. Try chkdsk /R to check for problems''.

The following error code has been written: 0x81000204.

I am still afraid that there is something seriously wrong with the hardware of my system.

I do hope I have informed you well about this issue.

Best regards,

Fluffyfluf

A:Error System Restore.

Hi

By reading the problem description you posted i strongly doubt your HDD is failed. Running check disk won't fix physical errors on the disc. It's just a tool to fix file system corruption. Taking 5 hour to complete checkdisk is another indication of a failinh HDD.

Proper way to test HDD is to run manufacturer's diagnostic tools. Please post a full spec of you system (Motherboard , CPU, HDD , RAM etc ).

Download 'Seatools for DOS' from http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Burn the ISO to CD using 'burn image to disc' option.  If you are unsure read this guide :  http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/201431en

Boot from the CD and run a full long test. If your HDD is a Seagate one it may offer to repair the bad sectors. Please choose skip instead. Post the result of scanning in next post.

I just noticed that System Restore, which previously had some restore points, now had none so I went to create one and got:

System Restore failed due to an unspecified error

I get exactly the same error if I try to disable System Restore too.

I ran a script to create one by subterfuge and it worked but I continue to get the same errors as above if I try to change any settings.

A:Odd New Error In System Restore

Dont know if this is the cause in your situation, but SR can be affected by a virus. The virus writers do not want their virus to be removed, so they remove the SR points to help prevent removal.
Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.
If that is negative try to disable in Safe Mode. Disable often causes the SR to work properly, as it is reset.

Hello all.

To start it off lastnight i had by accident deleted one of my folder's that had my iso game's saved.

I am currently running dual boot linux mint and windows7 ultimate

Upon me regretting what I did with the folder I decided to do a system restore. While the process was running correctly when my computer restarted it gave me 2 choices one was to repair the system do to the fact that it could not boot it self up and the second was to ignore it and continue to booting in windows.

So I went ahead and rebooted normally into windows when I go to check my iso folder half the game's where missing I tried another restore point and when booting it gave me the same error message so I went ahead and just ignored the repair function and went into windows again and still the iso's where missing

The crazy thing about this is when I booted the computer and ignored the error message the restore pop up box said that the restore was successful both times.

Does this error have something to do with me dual booting and the system can not read the disk correctly? Since linux is the priority in my system when booting up.

A:System restore error

If the ISO files were in a User Folder such as Downloads or somewhere like that, System Restore is programmed to avoid these folders so will explain why it hasnt come back!

Yet another lovely error from out of nowhere

Obviously restarting does nothing.
Here is what I have tried:
1. Restarting my computer
RESULT: Doesn't work
2. Ensuring that System Restore is enabled.
RESULT: when going to the services under computer management the System Restore service does not appear on the list.
3. Googling for an answer.
RESULT: No Luck

I would like to avoid reformatting my computer if at all possible.
I cannot take files from the windows xp disk as my computer did not come with disks.

So throw some ideas out there.

That is a common problem. Looks like the restore point is corrupted. Try another restore point.

When I try ro run system restore an error comes up that says "an unspecified error occurred during system restore" and none of the files were restored. Anyone have any idea why this happened and a solution? Thanks your all the best!!!

A:System Restore error

welp- you could try turing off system restore, rebooting, truning it back on, creating a new restore point and seeing if it works then.
but you will lose all points you currently have -so if you need to restore a current point, nope, don't have any ideas...

The error code is 14
Setup cannot continue, press any key to continue.

My PC then boots up as normal.

Hey guys,

I have a friend who's computer keeps crashing so he's trying to run a systems restore but whenever he runs it, it stops after a little while and says that it cannot finish. Why would this be happening and what are some solutions?

I would really really appreciate any help on this issue.

Hello xStryfex and welcome to TSF. Have you tried running System Restore in Safe Mode? You also may have virus or malware problems which could corrupt System Restore. Run System Restore in Safe Mode, then run all of your virus, malware/adware tools before running system in Normal Mode.

I decided to try a system restore after some problems last night...initially I thought maybe an update had caused them but now I think perhaps the internet part was my isp. I'd been getting false "check your connection" stuff from Secunia for a few days, then it spread to Yahoo messenger, which disconnected me and then tried to tell me something about changing proxy settings and checking my firewall. I had intermittent connection issues.
Anyway, I am no longer having issues really since trying the restore, however, it threw up a "System Restore Could Not Be Completed" error. The number was the 0xc0000022 one. I ran Malwarebytes and Eset and Avast Boot Scan to check for malware and appear to be clean. Could it just have been due to the virus scanner like Microsoft's page said? I read that those errors can occur sometimes, but why besides malware? How can I be sure it'll work if I ever need it again?
Computer is a Dell laptop about 2yrs old, unsure of model name but it's current on Windows 7 service packs.

System Restore unknown error 0x80070057 in eventlog.
My windows 7 home premium x64 is in Dutch so maybe I translate some error messages wrong!

-system restore points are created succesfully (no errors) and I can restore files to "Previous versions"

When doing a system restore to any previous restore point it says something (in dutch) like "initializing system restore" and after some seconds it reboots. System boots succesfully. But when logging in something like "system restore failed when scanning file system C. The disk may be corrupt. Perform chkdsk/R and try system restore again". See attached screenshot

- chkdsk /r /f C: => no problems found
- all restore points fail even new restore points
- removed all restore points on all disks. disabled restore points on all volumes. enabled restore points.
- same problem in "safe mode"
- Same problem in recovery console (F8 at boot, system recovery or something like that)
- restored system image using windows backup (2 weeks old). Same problem. don't have any other backups.

AFAIK recovery console has it's own mini operating system so doesn't use any other files on C-drive, is that correct?

-C drive problem? shadowset problem?

Could be a virus/malware. To start, go to Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware and download Malwarebytes. Install it, let it update, and then run a full scan. After the scan is done, remove everything it tells you to and restart your computer. Then tell me if you're still having problems.

If I wanted to create a System restore point, or even look at the System Restore point tab under:

My Computer > Properties > System Restore

I get the error message:

"Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

If I press "Debug" I see no change in it.

Any reasons why this is happening?

Thanks for the help!

System restore failed to extract file (d: \users\computer\downloads\back up from old machine \caprock securities backup\WA5PSetup.exe
The restore point was damaged or deleted during the restore

Where on earth is the restore looking for the file ?and why is it choosing a file I copied over when I upgraded the machine from xp to win 7 and not using a restore point.
is there a way to force it to use one of the 10 or so restore points it has saved.

P.S. I am doing this restore from the install disk as this is the main problem I am having
sony vaio vgc-rb40 mouse and keyboard dead after updates last week.

I did a chkdsk from command promt and I have done a sfc /scannow the chkdisk found a few errors in the files system ( empty space marked as data and corrected them but the sfc/scannow was clean

any ideas?

I am running Windows XP Pro SP1 and have a problem with System Restore. When trying to launch the app I recieve the following error: Run a dll as an app has encountered a problem... Something is mentioned about the file srrstr.dll. I have found two instances of this file on my drive:
1. WINDOWS\system32 222 KB
2. WINDOWS\servicepackfiles\i386 221 KB

I installed SP1 months ago so I don't think that is the problem.

I am having a problem with my Windows 7 Home Premium. I had something causing trouble a couple of days ago and ran System Restore using a copy made just about a week earlier (automatic backup is wonderful). This cleared up the boot problem but now my windows shows in the bottom right corner: Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine. It also will not allow me to do any updates with Windows update.

A:Not genuine error after system restore.

this seems to be a week for odd error codes- this is one I've neverseen before
'slui.exe 0x2a 0x800700B7' - basically it means that the system hasn't been able to update one of the files involved.
This could be due to a number of things - so we'd best start with corruption problems first.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size
of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally
(possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on the Start button
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Post an MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.
