Spamhaus - File extensions changed

Q: Spamhaus - File extensions changed

Hello, and thank you in advance for your help.  I have a laptop that seemed to have gotten infected with a nasty virus that took over the screen, and asked for payment from Spamhaus of all places.  Having seen things like this before, I ran a slew of anti-virus that I've used to remove viruses before.  I ran Malwarebytes, Super Anti-Spyware, and finally Combofix.
After I ran combofix (there were 2 deletions), I reboot the laptop and viola, no more taking over the screen.  However, I have a directory in which I keep all my important work files for dropbox that it seems to have changed all the files into html files.  Each file has ".html" slapped onto the end of it, and when you open it, directs you to another ransomwear page labeled Spamhaus.  I've tried snipping off the .html, but the files don't open correctly.
If I lose these files I'm in big trouble.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was installing Norton Security and it locked up during install.
When I rebooted, Norton had changed all my files extensions from exe to lnk

As a result none of the programs or files work. After reading a lot, I tried to

restore my registry. Since Norton changed the files, any command in run does not work. I comes up with a dialog asking for a file association.

Any one with an answer, I would appreciate very much.

one of our users recently had all his files changed to a strange format. For example if a word file is named "Committee.DOCX" then it would change to "Committee.DOCX.isycjje". All the MS files as well as pdf files are changed to that extension of " .isycjje". I tried applying several anti-malware programs as well as mounting the drive to linux with no avail to retrieve sucess.
Any one faced with this issue recently , please advise suggestions.

I have a User that brought a computer to me. Mostly all the files within the user folders where changed. Example of a file.
Should be (Birthday.jpg)
is now (Birthday.jpg.cpjevac)

I have deleted the extension .cpjevac from the name allowing it to change to .jpg file and when doing so the file icon changes as the application that is compatible with .jpg. After opening the file it just says "The file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted"

does anyone know what I can do for this. I have searched so many places have not found anything at all.

I have booted in safe mode and ran virus scans just to clean the system, But no change of the files at all.

Any help would be much appreciated.

My husband's computer has major problems. Every executable program file has been changed to a file type .LNK and nothing will open! I am able to right click and select which program to open with, but this only works for a few programs as I am not able to locate all the files needed. Norton Internet Security seems to have disappeared from the computer and the Windows Restore will not work. In fact, any file with a .EXE file extension doesn't seem to be working (which is just about everything...)

Anyone know what is causing this?? Any help would be appreciated...the sooner the better so I can get his WoW working again.

PS: I was able to run Ad-Aware & Registry Mechanic, but it didn't make a difference. The Restore function of Registry Mechanic will not work either.

While working on some Microsoft Word Documents, with MS Word Starter (free version), all file icons and extensions everywhere in the computer changed.

Icons in some Word documents with .docx extensions changed to a plain orange (attachment 1), while retaining the same extension. When double clicked to open, a microsoft window appears asking me to activate the full Microsoft Office 2010 (paid version), which is in Widows 7 by default. These documents are not opening.

The rest of the Word documents changed their extensions from .docx to .rtf (attachment 2). Their icons also changed from the usual Word document icon. These open with Word Satarter but in Compatibility Mode, which did not happen before.

The option to 'Open with' in the right click menu does not show Word Starter in the pop up window (Attachment 3). Not even when 'Other programs' are selected.

I did a repair to the Word Starter from the Control Panel, to no avail. I have a few hundred Word documents in my libraries which are now in a total mess!

What can I do?

Hi - I have a Dell PC - Optiplex 760, running Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Office 2003. Yesterday, my daughter played a game online, and suddenly a bunch of my files changed their extensions to lnk. It seems to be limited to things like I-tunes, Adobe Reader, Quicktime, and all the microsoft office programs. I've run Norton anti-virus - there was a virus that got eliminated. I've done system restore, and re-installed Windows XP. Now, I think I'm probably just messing it up. Anyone have a thought on what to do? Thanks, Beth

Hi guys, so I have a little problem, I've downloaded FileTypesMan because I wanted to change the .exe files appearance on my computer.

I did this using this program - all .exe file icons changed, however, with them changed ALL the shortcuts to all the programs that I have on my laptop - now they all look the same.

I can't figure out how to change it all back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys1
I'm about to create a .reg file that will set path in registry to my own icon for specific file extensions. E.g. I want my own icon as a default icon for .ini extension. And not only for one extension but for more of them, in a single .reg file. As always I don't want to mess it up,so I'm looking for some basic assistance on how to fill a notepad. And I know this is the best place to look at

P.S. I do use a Default Program Editor and File Types Manager, but I wanted a single .reg that will do the job for multiple modifications in a single click, something like backup of icon-registry-modifications, as I like to format my PC every year to ensure clean working environment. Setting things up de novo is a lot of fun but time consuming... I made a backup of registry and a Restore Point, just in case.

For any idea, thanks in advance!!

A:.reg file to set default icon for specific file extensions

If changing the icon worked with the tools you mention, use Process Monitor or Regshot to track down specific changes in the registry for .ini that change the icon. Then create similar registry entries for other extensions in your REG-file.

I'm using filetypeman, attempting to set a different icon for a different type of text file such as xml, csv, txt, ini, php ... But when I change one of them, some or all of them will be affected. I have associated them with a common text editor, that may be the cause. But is there a way to tweak their icons to prevent them from changing together? My OS is Win 7 x64. I have tried both filetypeman and types - same problem.

I can't believe that I am actually having this issue. It is to laugh.

Alright, I am using XP, SP3 and all that jazz. My problem is with file extensions. So, I use Autodesk Maya and up to about a day ago, any Maya Binary (.mb) file or Maya ASCII (.ma) will open in Maya, obviously. Well this morning I noticed that my .mb files are now trying to open with Notepad or something like that. I have no idea how this got changed. Here take a look at this.

So, I tried Right Click > Open with... > Choose Program > Maya and checked the box for "Always use this program for files with the same extension". Well that didn't work because apparently my Maya binary files are now no longer valid Win32 applications

So thats where I'm at. I have even tried Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab and setting .mb files with Maya and it does nothing even if it says that it will open with Maya, I still have the notepad icon instead of the Maya icon next to my files. I hope that I explained this enough. Simple problem I guess, can anyone give me a simple answer?

Thanks in advance

My comp is not displaying .bin file extensions, and every time I rename the file it just wont change it, just wondering if it's something simple or what do I need to do to get this this fixed. Any help is appreciated.

A:Need some help with file extensions

Hi darkblade125

By default, Windows XP won't show any file extension in Explorer (which of course would include files with the .bin extension). In Windows Explorer, from the "Tools" menu, choose "Folder Options", and remove the checkmark from the box in front of "Hide extensions for known file types".

If the .bin file you wish to view has the "hidden" attribute, while you are still in the Folder Options View menus, place a "selected" dot in the circle in front of "show hidden files and folders".

Changing a file's extension won't make it a different type of file (and Windows will pretty much warn you if you try)... You need to convert the file, which then can use a different extension.

If you have more questions, ask away
. . . Gary

how to "create a file extension" I can't make heads or tails of this issue. Can someone explain it to me and show me how to do it. I have an e-mail that I am trying to send with an attachment. I "browse" it from "documents" and attach it to the email. But when opened it gives me this crap about a file extension. I went to the program and can't find what I need. I think I need something ending with ".rtf"

Please help me

An .rtf file is a rich text format file -- you should be able to open it with Wordpad or just about any word processor. If the extension is not there you can right-click the file and select Open With then browse to Wordpad.

What program are you using for e-mail? In most e-mail programs you can attach a file by simply dragging and dropping it to the open e-mail message window.

If you need to add an extension to a file that has none, you first need to un-hide file extensions by opening a folder going to the Tools > Folder Options > View then unchecking the box labeled "Hide extensions for known file types." If you can't see a Tools menu press Alt.

I like to keep file extensions hidden because I know office fiies, pdfs, jpgs, etc so I have no need to see the extensions. Once in a while for some reason, the "hide file extensions for known file types" box in the folder option of the control panel unchecks itself. No big deal I just fix it.
But today, the file extensions insist on staying. I check the box, click apply and ok and close the control panel. Only the extensions remain visible. I reopen the control panel and the box is unchecked again. Can anyone help solve this?

Hey guys,

Is anyone familiar wit the JAD/JAR/SiS file extensions or file formats?
I know that they are mobile phone related. Friend of mine downloaded a theme for her mobile phone and asked me how to go about with these file ext. As far as I know, all she had to do is download the file, save it onto her mobile phone and execute from there. No success!

Can you run these file ext. in windows 7 so that they install onto her phone?
How does one go about this when it comes to JAD/JAR/SiS files?

A:File Extensions

The cell phone should be java enabled. Though most modern phones are, but your friend might be using an ancient phone. Another possibility is the file is corrupted, try with different .jars.

I used to be able to see the file extensions, as in *.jpg, but Win 7 seems to have decided I never need to see that.

I use an income tax program that chooses where to store the files, and to find the files I cannot search by the extension. If I find some of the files, I still can't look a for any others because I can't see the extension.

It tells me the name of the software that created it, but not the extension.

Is there any way I am allowed to see this? Or is this one of Microsoft's improvements?

In Microsoft Windows XP Pro, how do you change a file's extension, when you are unable to rename its extension because the extension is.... i guess.... hidden?

I changed folder options to view files extensions.

I then tried to change the file extensions on a couple of files and every time I tried to change an extension to a different type (i.e. *.htlm to *.rar) the explorer window freezes and shows not responding.

Has anyone else had this problem?

A:file extensions

There could be many factors in this.

What files are you trying to change?
Have you installed any registry software?
Have you used any watermark cracks?
What are your full system specs? (click User CP to update your specs)

Hey, first post.

Okay so earlier today I was just minding my business burning a dvd, and out of nowhere i noticed my control panel pop up out of nowhere even tho i never opened it, so i closed it without thinking about it, but then later noticed all my files all over my computer are showing the file extensions. music.mp3 picture.jpg, etc. I tried going into folder options and selecting the "hide file extensions" box, but it was already checked. i unchecked it and rechecked it and clicked apply, and it still did nothing. They remained there. I even tried renaming the files back, thinking that maybe the settings took effect but i would have to rename all my files back to normal, but then when i did that its all like "CHANGING THE FILE EXTENSION WILL MAKE THE FILE UNUSABLE" etc.

Anyways, can someone help me here cuz this is really frustrating. I don't even want to be on my computer when this stupidity is in my face because it stresses me out. And no, i don't have any viruses or spyware etc. I'm a 10+ year computer user who is on 24/7, im fairly smart with comps by now, but stupid system crap like this confuses me. Please help!

Hey all. I have a bit of a bizarre issue.
I suddenly find that all my files have their file extensions visible at the end of their names (ie: file.txt, file.gif, file.jpg).
This makes it much more difficult to sort through and find specific files, since the file names don't read as clearly...
Anyhow, I tried to go to the "Folder and search options," to change their visibility and no matter what I do the settings won't stick.
Has anyone experienced this or know how to possibly fix it??

A:File Extensions Glitch

Did you try the "Restore Defaults" on that Tools /Folder Options / View .
Otherwise i havent seen that before , or it may be another issue , registry altered or possible Malware.
If the restore defaults doesnt help , someone else may know.
Have a Look here
Option 2 - Step 2 if you wish to save then run the reg file to alter the registry entry for extensions.
Option 3 - is to do it manually , but ensure you make a Backup of the registry prior.
If your not comfortable doing this - Then Dont !

Hi folks,
I was just curious about a few file extensions I've seen here and there. I'm not sure if this goes here, but you can decide that for me. Has anyone ever seen the file extensions .vxd and .vmm used anywhere legitimate? I know that .VXD stands for Virtual Device Driver, and that .VMM stands for Virtual machine management, but the only places I've seen or heard of them being referenced is in certain viruses. W97M/Marker, for example, uses a virtual device driver in one of it's variants for instance. What were these files originally designed to be used in by Microsoft? I'd love some input and some education. And I'm sorry if this question seems silly, irrelevant, or out in left field.

Windows 7 forum,

I've been using XP for 10 years and am now trying Windows 7 as a

would like to hide all file and folder name extensions, things
like Date modified, Type, Size etc. These things just clutter up

I know you can go to Organize>Folder and search options>view> and

. Organize / Folder Options / View / select the XP'ish options there

I also install ClassicShell for the "UP" folder icon and FileSearchEX for a classic XP style search tool.

I recently installed Nero 7 and NIS 2007; because of some problems I had to uninstall NIS and reinstall Nero 7. The problem now is that my XP SP2 won't recognize some file types; I just know of my picture files because they don't appear with their regular icon... jpeg, jpg, bmp, gif. Instead they show as some unknown file type icon, and when I go under Tools > Folder Options > File Types, I do not find any picture file type in the list.

I installed XP Repair Pro 2006, and ran a file type/extension check and found various file types that seems are not associated with no program. In the list were my picture file extensions, bmp, jpg, jpeg, gif and a lot of other file types which I recognized and a lot which I didnt. Bad part of this program is that it does not give me an option to restore file types to registry.

Can anyone please help me restore my file types/extensions associations back to normal? I was thinking on using System Restore but will restrain from it cause I don't like it. It just messes with some of my program settings.

Awhile back, something caused all the executable file extentions for my applications (programs) to be renamed to .lnk from whatever they were (such as .exe). Consequently, I can't launch any application from the desktop or start>programs menu as .lnk is undefined, so I have to navigate to the application's folder and execute the application separately and independently.

I suspect something altered my registry. I keep my antivirus and antispyware up to date, and perform other routine maintenance regularly. I run the AV scans as well as SpybotS&D, AdAware.

I am running a Dell XPS Gen5 dual processor Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz, 1GB RAM with 149GB HDD, Radeon X850 video adaptor and Windows XP Media Center Edition Ver 2002 Service Pack 2.

Please look over my HijackThis report below and advise. Thanks. JeepBud

A:File Extensions turned to .lnk

Not sure I understand. If your exe files were renamed to .lnk, then how were you able to run them from the program folders?

Hi All,

This problem started several months ago and I was only noticing it in association with my .wps files. Since that time I have downloaded and installed two other word processors, Open Office and AbiWord, and the same has been happening with documents that I've saved using those two programs too.

I have also had a couple of .txt files on my desktop, files that hadn't been opened for several months, decide that they wanted to turn themselves into files with no apparent extension.

How can I find out if there is a sneaky key logger on this machine or if someone is using a program like go to my PC to remotely access this machine?

Thanks for ANY help.

Dear All

I have recently installed Abode CS4. I want to set the file presferences such that jpegs etc always open with fireworks (FW).

I have tried My->computer->tools->folder options->file types and various other versions of this.

Oddly Fw doestn' come up in the list of "recommended" or "Other" programs so I browse through to the Fw.exe file and select that.

This never works and the icon for (say) jpeg chagnes to something like "Windows pic/fax" viewer - really odd I think.

What can I do please to set fireworks as the default for jpegs etc

(incidentally, it has worked for PNG files, but nothing else)

thanks in advance

A:file extensions problem

- Right click a jpeg file
- Click Open With(or the open with menu, then "more programs")...
- Find fireworks(or click browse and find the FW exe)
- Tick the set as default box("Always use this program...")
- Click OK.

That will change the default, if that's what you've already done then it's worth checking the registry keys involved (post back saying so first though).

I am using a small freeware called PFE32. This editor lets you associate file extensions to it so that when you click files with these extensions, they are automatically loaded and edited by PFE32.The problem is that even with these associations disabled, Windows doesn't know what to do with .BAT and .CMD files anymore and keeps asking which program it should use to open them. Just like unknown file types. Is there a way of getting Windows to behave as it did before my mistake ?Thanks

A:File extensions association (.BAT,.CMD)

You could try this: might also want to try posting in the Windows 2000 forum, you might get a better response.MIKE

I have Outlook Express 6 and XP. I had to have my computer shop re-format after a virus attack caused troubles. I had a lot of data file on thumb drives, all in .xls and .doc format.
Now when I try to access them, most are readable but some are goggledegook and I cannot change them so they can be read. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
Another problem is that OE will receive OK but will not send.
