ComboFix ran&completed - don't know how to proceed

Q: ComboFix ran&completed - don't know how to proceed

hi there,
plese consider that who's writing (me) is a sw/hw total illiterate..
months ago i downloaded a .exe (then uninstalled) to upload videos on youtube and from that time:
- at every web connection (firefox), the start page is + the last web page visited at previous connection (two windows). i set up new homepage but nothing changes.
- pop ups frequently open (then disabled via settings).
- mouse stops/blocks for a second while using it.
i downloaded combofix and let it run. everything seems worked correctly, but now i don't know how to proceed.
here below the log i got - integral copy&paste - now saved on desktop.
if i understood well, malware etc will be removed once combofix is uninstalled and i still have to uninstall it..
i hope you can help me about how to proceed.

Hello,That request about NOT posting CF logs is primarily to keep people from running the program unsupervised. Please read this topic: which explains that reasoning further. Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at step 6.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Since you have run ComboFix, please include the ComboFix log in the new topic. If you cannot produce any of the other logs, then please create the new topic anyway, include the information that you were unable to produce the other logs and why and include the ComboFix log along with a description of your computer issues.Orange Blossom

Hi All,

I am in the process of repairing a clients Win7 Home Premium SP1 PC, initial complaint "PC hangs on windows boot screen". After confirming not boot I was able to boot to safe mode and reviewed the error logs. With nothing jumping out immediately as a problem I began to suspect malware and began a run of malwarebytes which hung halfway through requiring a hard reboot.

Following hard reboot it would now not boot at all. Running a pre-startup drive scan found a faulty data HDD, removed and was able to boot only to "last known good config". Once booted I noticed three separate AV's installed and removed the free versions and rebooted. PC still was chugging along and look at running processes revealed Bit Defender AV pegging CPU at 100% with nothing apparent running. Uninstalled Bit Defender and several apps that were clearly adware that had been installed.

After another reboot began a sweep with CCleaner for good measure an app popped up an installer that force installed "Free Ride Games". After several attempts was able to uninstall using Revo, however malware not clearly suspected. Thus I downloaded Combofix and began run. It has not been stuck at "Completed step_50" for about 2 hours. I can hear (and see) continue drive activity and I am unclear if i should simply let it continue or stop Combofix and try an alternate route pending input and instructs from the talented BleepingComputer Community/Folks?!

A:Combofix Stuck At "Completed Stage_50"

I would wait as you know stopping combofix can damage the machine more. if the HDD indicator is flashing its probobly still working its majic. I had one machine that hung for over an hour but never as long as two hours so that is slightly concerning. With all the issues you mentioned in your post i would probobly consider rebuilding the machine if combofix fails.

A:Here's the log -- How to proceed?

I have MacAfee Suite. MacAfee keeps alerting me on a virus called
Below is the original post I've posted over at the McAfee forum. They suggested to do the log (which I've posted here earlier) and post it here for further advise by you guys. In the meantime I've done a DOS scan/clean on the computer, as suggested by McAfee. But when I then checked the system with TrojanHunter, I'm still getting the same (below) McAfee warning on this MALFORMED ARCHIVE VIRUS. So here's the posting that appeared at the McAfee forum and you have my log (in my previous posting). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MALFORMED ARCHIVE. I'm prompted to remove it. I do. Next thing it's there again. It has different names such as J879Y.exe or QqyZC.exe or 4f1Lll.exe etc, all in Documents and Settings Temp files.

I tried to go through the Trojan Virus Manual Removal Steps. It tells me to go to Safe Mode. As I follow the instructions, everything rings right. But the two files which contain WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI don't have the Read-only checked, so I leave them unchecked. Then there is NO line beginning with 'load=' or 'run=' in the C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI window. Also, there is nothing beginning with 'shell=explorer.exe' in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI window.

I guess I must be doing something wrong. But the virus warning from MacAfee on the MALFORMED ARCHIVE virus is not going away.

THANKS for your advise.

I recently purchased a(new) full install of XP Pro/SP2 on e-bay for less than what I paid for the upgrade version of Pro on sale two years ago.
My current installation is on a 15 GB hard drive, I want to do a clean full install onto a 40GB partitioned hard drive with 30GB for XP and 10 for win 98se. I also have a 120GB hard drive(Simple/Dynamic)that I use for mpeg storage.
Will my mpegs be safe, what I mean is will the new installation detect the drive?, or if I have to use the manage tool to detect the drive will it need to be reformated to be functional?

A:Not sure how to proceed

Your mpegs and anything else that may be on the 120GB hdd will be fine, during install, you should see all your partitions/drives and you select which to format etc...but if you're in any doubt, remove the drive before install so the only one setup will detect is the 40gb drive

Hey there!

I've been attempting to get my girlfriend's computer back up to speed. It's about three years old now, running XP with SP2, and, for whatever reason, is slow as all hell. There's few running processes, each of which only using around 5-6% of the CPU, yet at most any moment, the CPU useage is always up to near 100%. Firefox and AIM slow things down considerably for some reason, as well.

I've tried various anti-spyware products, Ad-Aware and Hijackthis, but nothing abnormal that I can tell surfaces there. Antivirus comes up empty... and when I boot the thing into safe mode, it runs quickly and without problems. Anyone have any idea what I could try doing? Thanks!

~ Matt

A:Not Sure How to Proceed...

The fact that it boots fast in Safe Mode makes me think you have a lot of startup programs running. Go to Start > Run and type "msconfig" w/o the quotes. Go to the STARTUP tab. You will see programs listed there with checkboxes. To give you an idea, you should probably have at most 5 boxes checked. If you have more than 5 boxes checked post here with the names of the programs that are checked or upload a screenshot and I'll help you determine which programs arn't needed at startup.

Hello there!
I have bought a new SSD (Samsung 850 PRO) and I have a few question regarding the installation.
Now, I currently have a HDD with the OS on it and my idea was to install the OS on the new SSD and leave the HDD as storage.
I also wanted to format the HDD. I want to be sure the get rid of everything that's on it.
So this is what I thought:
1) format the HDD and detach it from the mobo
2) attach the SSD, boot the PC, access the BIOS and select the it as the main drive
3) install the OS and drivers
4) attach the old HDD
Is it correct? Am I missing something?
Thank you!

A:Installing new SSD, how do I proceed?

Sounds good to me. The only thing is you will have to format the HHD after it's been installed back in the computer, you can't do it before because the operating system is still using it.
You might have to use something like Gparted to remove the partitions from the HDD when it is reinstalled.

Hello everyone,
Personally, I don't know much about the hardware of a computer and need help understanding it. Almost half a year ago, my PC crashed for no apparent reason and I kept getting g BSoDS. I had no idea of what happened or why. I finally found an alternative solution; to reinstall Windows. However, I noticed that every 3 weeks or so, it would once again crash, and I had to repeat the entire process several times.

I have identified and removed the failing HDD, but I now need help proceeding so that my computer can run with only 1 HDD. I have switched the SATA controller from RAID to AHCI, but I have to face yet another problem.

Currently, I have gotten to Windows installation screen, but it asks for device drivers needed to access the hard drive, but the problem is, I don't know where to find them. I believe my motherboard is Intel X58 Chipset, and I have looked around, but I don't understand which driver to use. If anyone could guide me, it would be much appreciated

TL: DR: I have 2 HDDs, of which 1 failed and I need device drivers that can access the HDD. I have an Intel X58 Chipset motherboard.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hello Friends,

It has been a long time ( which, ironically, is a good thing ). Hope everybody is doing great.

Ok, recently, my computer would start but would go no further because according to it my " CPU has been changed. Or CPU ratio has fail (sic) " and that I should " re-enter CPU settings into the CMOS set-up".

I could only proceed by pressing F1 ( as per directions on the screen ).

Also, I noticed that my clock was messed up. I changed it to current time and date, but then it messed up again. Now things go quite slow.

Appreciate the help.

My apologies in advance if I've jumped the gun...

I was searching for info on anti-malware remediation and came across ComboFix.exe, which I have downloaded, installed and currently have running on an infected WinXP Pro SP2 machine. This machine had an issue that wasn't allowing programs to run... AntiMalwareBytes did find a trojan.dropper which it successfully removed, but after that, the scans get up to around 300+ items and terminates with no message. I've run it safe mode, real mode, reinstalled it a bunch of times.. same behavior. I've tried all the rkill variants.. they all do some screen flashing but never give any kind of status.

But, before I continue further... after reading your instructions I see that I wasn't supposed to run a combofix.. but alas, its currently running on the infected PC and hasn't displayed any of its stages. The last line on the display, which I've been watching for over 3.5 hours how is "However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double", followed by the cursor blinking on the next line of the blue screen titled "Autoscan". I really don't think I'll see any results pop up on the screen...

Nothing else is running on the computer's taskbar.

So, in order to provide the initial logs and and follow the directions to procure the info you kind folks would like, what do I do???? Alt-F4 the combofix (if that will even work?), cntl-alt-del? start, shutdown, restart?

A:Maybe in a catch-22, how to proceed?

It's over 5+ hours now and ComboFix is still at the same place in my original post and has yet to burp out any Stages... I gotta think it's crashed or stuck...

Can anybody give me some direction on this??? Can I kill it? Reboot? End Task?

What's the proper path to take?

I erroneously posted this initially at the Ws7 Forum. My error came about because "XP" is loaded into VirtualMachine ware-Player with a "Ws7" host.

When I attempt to do a manual update the process goes as far as where you chose "Express" or "Custom". Clicking either one does not bring on the searching of my installation for updates.

What needs to be done?

A:Ws updates will not proceed

Just my guess, but I could be wrong.

Virtual XP is just an image running in Win7 or Vista , it is a subset of the main OS being run in a box, so there is probably no provision to run the updates because the main system is not WinXP, the XP box does not hook into the system itself.

Hi, I have xp pro sp3 installed in my pc and just yesterday I've encountered problems.

- XP will stall on the welcome page and my cursor would hang. No hdd activity since the hdd LED on my case doesn't show any light anymore.

- If I reboot after the win splash screen it goes to chckdsk automatically. If I allow chkdsk to proceed it hangs at 7 percent of verifying files at stage 2 of 3.

- Even if I leave the pc for 3 hours the 7 percent has not changed and the LED lamp of my hdd is off, indicating no activity.

- I've attempted several times inserting my XP installer cd, but then it seems to hang at the point wherein it says "Windows is starting up" but then even if I leave the pc alone for a couple of hours the screen is still showing the same starting up part. Again the LED lamp is dead hence no hdd activity again.

- I've tried doing this several TIMES TO NO AVAIL.

- I have no backups of the files in my hdd, hence I just can't reformat my hdd right away.

- I also don't have a spare pc at home or nearby that I can use to back up my hdd. I do have a Vaio, but after upgrading to win7 recently, the hdd on that laptop has been locked out. It seems my upgrade was faulty somewhere. This though is another issue that i would have to post anew.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

In this post I would like to present three Win7 Pro configuration features I believe indicate a complex system compromise. I could write several pages of observations which begin about six months ago when my integrated laptop cam light began to come on by itself. I strongly suspect the compromise includes a back door as I have observed the configuration changes are dynamic, active, and responsive to my efforts at mitigation and forensic analysis. I will provide as much background detail as needed but the course the malware and its operator(s) take changes and has continually improved and adapted becoming less and less detectable with each operating system reinstall. I've reinstalled and reconfigured windows 7 upwards of 15 or so times. Since disconnecting my integrated cam there seems to be much less interest (at least the changes made are less noticable and less aggressive). I've had a very stable and function OS with this build but I do not believe any of my efforts have had much effect on the overall infection. The three features I'd like to present are relatively static compared to other changes I've seen. These are the same each time. There is probably much much more but I'm not a tech and don't know what I'm doing when it comes to this kind of thing. I just keep trying to wipe, reformat, and reinstall the OS. The first issue I present is a partition I have that I can not remove. I've tried Hiren's Boot Rescue CD and Darik's Boot a... Read more

A:Advice on How to Proceed

Aside from the webcam light, which may or may not indicate more than a loose wire, all the symptoms you reported are normal and indicate nothing but proper function. The System Partition will be created by the Windows OS installer every time you reinstall as it stores information for UEFI-based system boards and GPT partition tables. The $RECYCLE.BIN folders are created by Windows when a volume is created and are where files live after you delete them but before emptying your Recycle Bin. Finally, hundreds of registry keys are locked by Windows at any given time because Windows is using them or protecting them on purpose. Some registry keys will never be accessible from a running system, because they're critical and always in use.

Recently I upgraded my Toshiba Portege R500 laptop from Windows 7 to windows 8 pro. Everything worked fine for almost a month and since last few days I am not able to see login screen, its just blank. Since I am unable to login I cannot access the apps/programs neither I can shut the laptop from Windows 8 via Charm menu or Cntrl+Alt+Del.

I am stuck as I cannot reinstall the OS as when I use power down button on the laptop the machine goes to sleep and on power up I cannot access boot priority screen to change to optical drive.

I am struggling since last few days. I would appreciate suggestion help.

A:No Log in Screen; unable to proceed further

Are you plugged into another monitor through VGA or HDMI?
If so, unplug them and reboot.
When I'm plugged into an external monitor, the login screen tends to be displayed on them instead of the laptop screen, even though everything leading up to the login screen was displayed on the laptop screen.

Such an event has caused great frustration for me in the past. Now I know better! Unplug external screens when booting.

If not, check BIOS to see if it has a preferred primary display adapter. It's a bit of a long shot but check anyway.

Dear all,I believe I have a rather pernicious infection in my computer which answers to Virtumonde - I hope I will not be putting you all off if I give you more of a backstory and I hope that at the end you can offer some assistance.I have over the past few months experienced a gradual slowdown in the performance of my PC (which is a fairly old one I must admit Pentium 4 280GHz.)I am running Windows XP Home and this was initially fine and even now is maintained to the newest update.I had upto about a year and a half ago a McAfee suite running on my PC - I can't remember the vintage but if I said I installed it about two and a half years ago that would be about right - it had Anti-Virus software and Firewalls etc. (I'm embarrassed to say that I really can't pull out the full details on it but I'm hoping it's not too important..) In any event, McAfee ran just fine and did the business apparently.About six months ago however my licence expired and what with moving house and dealing with new mortgages and a new baby etc.. well it didn't get renewed for over six months and this is when things started to slow down. The other day I decided to buy the latest version of McAfee ( the 10 in 1 version) with:Security Centre v8.0Anti-Virus v12.0Firewall v9.0Privacy Service v10.0Easy Net 2.0SiteAdvisor 2.1This appears not to be a good move as my computer has now become staggeringly slow and in addition as soon as I installed the programme Internet Explorer started to ... I've been running a dual XP/7 system for the last several months with XP installed on the first partition and Win7 on the second of the same hard disk.

Since I rarely boot into XP anymore I wanted to take several GB's off of the XP partition and allot it to the Win7 partition. I know how to do this and made the changes using Partition Magic. Once I okay-ed the changes I rebooted and watched the DOS screen as the changes were going through. It got to 67% and halted. After 20 minutes it's still hasn't budged.

I'm starting to sweat.

I'm afraid to do a hard shutdown since the partitioning wasn't complete. What are my options? Am I screwed if I shut down and reboot?

A:PC froze during repartitioning—how to proceed?

Many of us use Partition Wizard fir our disk management and get on well with it. This tutorial has all the details.

Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD

Resizing a partition can take some time if it's got a lot of data on it so I'd give it a bit longer yet.

If all else fails, you'll have no option but to reboot into whichever boot disc you're using.

You may find this tutorial useful too.

I am haveing a strange problem trying to install XP on a machine I've had for awhile.

Boots from the CD as expected and goes thru the install process fine, until the first re-boot (after copying files) the system then displays the standard "press any key to boot from cd", I ignore this and then the system just hangs with the cursor blinking in the top left.

This would be the point when You usually are greeted by the windows demo screens and a countdown timer as the install proceeds

I have successfully installed both ubuntu and win 7 on this system, I have stripped it down to the bare bones, removing and PCI cards, extra HDD and using my most basic CD drive. Now I am stuck.

If anyone has any idea what could be causing this I would be most grateful

So my last computer mobo fried and I installed my 4 pin atx psu into a different motherboard. To my dismay I discovered that my other motherboard has an 8 pin atx slot and 4 pins is not enough to provide power.

Now I just purchased a molex to 4 pin atx adapter and when trying to plug it in I discovered the pins won't along properly.
So I plugged two of the pins from the adapter into the edge of the 8 pin slot leaving two empty pins in the middle of the 8 pin slot open and 2 pins sitting over the edge not plugged in.

This seems like enough power and my system booted however I'm wondering if these 2 loose pins will damage my system or not.

New mobo installation. Went smooth as silk. But now I'm not sure what to do next. I'm going to guess the first thing I need to do is a fresh install of Windows. Then do I install all the new drivers for the mobo? What about the bios? How do I know if I need to update the bios?

A:Solved: New mobo. How should I proceed?

You should only update the bios if the update addresses
a specific problem you are having or full support for your
CPU is not included in the present bios.
A bad bios flash can trash a motherboard.

If all your hardware is installed, install windows, then install
the motherboard drivers, then install other hardware drivers.
Once that basic system is setup, make sure to set the video
resolution to the native resolution of your monitor and make
sure your main audio source is set as default.
Some video cards have onboard audio that the system will default to,
so you need to set your computers audio to default to get sound
out of you speakers.
Run windows update and get all updates installed.
Install an anti virus.
Microsoft security essentials is free and may be listed in windows update.
Installing microsoft security essentials will also activate
the windows firewall if it isn't already.
After all that, you should be good to install your programs.
If you decide to use windows 8,don't use microsoft security essentials.
It has windows defender built in.

Ever since getting my new Dell/XP combo, all I have is grief upon grief which never yet got ironed out. Dell's tech support is hopeless.

Can anyone help with this? Upon installing the Arachnophilia version which I'd used with Win98, I haven't been able to create new HTML files since it displayed some cryptic error message.

So I decided to download the latest version of Arach, hoping it would now be compatible with WinXP. But it required downloading Java as well. The automatic Java download glitched and created an error report (which is now residing somewhere on my d--n system whether I want it or not...

So I then switched to the manual Java download. I then get the following message upon trying to install it:

Java Installer cannot proceed with current Internet Connection Proxy Settings.Click to expand...

Note that I've also been having "internet connection" problems trying to download Adobe's software, as well as trying to upload files via Leech FTP. It gave this error message:

Can't open data connection for LIST
Could not retrieve directory listing for "/"Click to expand...

P.S. The ISP is Access4less, and their tech support is just as hopeless as Dell's. For example, I tell them of my problems, and also include the info that I'm using WinXP. So what do I get back? An email asking me "which version of Windows are you using?" And this is the 2nd round with them! Hopeless...

Okay, it seems the model computer I have has had problems all across the boards. Well, I'm on an Emachines T1840. I recieved this computer from a teacher at Job Corps. She told me there was something wrong with the motherboard and that the screen stayed blank at startup. I went and bought a new ATI video card since it seemed the onboard video card was burnt out somehow. Then after we installed the new video card, we booted it up. Halfway into startup, it started rebooting it's self. There was a Windows XP Partition on it, so we figured that was corrupt and we installed a version of Windows2000 from a boot disc. Well, that got as far as putting in a registration key. We couldn't find a working key for that, so we went and bought a windows XP upgrade disc. We got past the registration key entry and it began installation after a brief reboot. Now, it stays at 39 minutes remaining, and after about 15 minutes it brings up a blue screen. It says something along the lines of this. "Setup cannot continue, cannot read file (Forgotten file name here)" And then it says "If this is the first time you have recieved this message, reboot and continue setup" And then it proceeds to dump the physical memory. I re-did setup a few times with the same error message. So, I'm just wondering, what the heck am I supposed to do? It's actually pretty rare that I'm stumped on something like this.

Good morning this is my first post I`m Athanasios from Greece nice to meet you all.It would be nice to have an answer and i apologise for my bad english we dont speak here a lot

So my <<perfect>> pc after 6 months of rock solid stability of perfect compability through the hardware parts suddenly stops working. When i press the power button the fans starts working and thats all.The screen shows -Cable Connected:No Signal- i replace the PSU nothing,i replace the ram again nothing when i replace the graphic card (Gigabyte Ati X800) the system start to work again "Ok the graphic board was faulty i thought" pretty nice.
When i tested my X800 to another pc the computer worked. The conclusion: my computer can play with any graphic card so far but not with my X800 and my X800 can play in any computer but not with my system. The dealer cant take it back because the card is not damaged and it plays perfect and the same thing about my motherboard.I tried all the possible combinations also 4 technicians saw it and its the first time something like this happens. So anything in mind?

A:Before i proceed to an exorcism i need your opinion!!!

Well you best bet (my favoirte answer to solve everything) is to clear cmos by unluping the power cable and removing cmos battery (it looks like a coin). Then after about 10 secs plug the battery in and plug in graphic card and plug it in and see if it works.

If I had Ramnit on my computer I would format and reinstall Windows (see below). That being said, it has been reported that some people have had success using this: is a file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, and .HTML/HTM files, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. Using this backdoor, a remote attacker can access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files. The infected .HTML or .HTM files may be detected as Virus:VBS/Ramnit.A. Win32/Ramnit.A!dll is a related file infector often seen with this infection. It too has IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .dll and .HTML/HTM files and opens a back door that compromises your computer. This component is injected into the default web browser by Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A which is dropped by a Ramnit infected executable file. -- Note: As with most malware infections, the threat name may be different depending on the anti-virus or anti-malware program which detected it. I understand there might be a down grade option to go from the 8 that came with my desktop to an equivalent 7 version. I have already completed this task using one of my 3 family pack home premium licenses but I now think I didn't need to use that and I might get a better version if I do the offered downgrade (if there is one!).

Anyhow, I have a gateway cheapo (really, really cheap! 169 with a 6gb ram windows license 500gb hard drive I thought it was free!) desktop that came preinstalled with Win 8. I upgraded to 8.1 but could not get over what scheit 8 is and decided to go to seven. While I despise MS I find their products somewhat good; but this 8 thing is bad. Simple. Yeah, I know. There are a lot of folk who actually like 8. Not me.

So at least I recorded my 8 code. Does any one have any experience or knowledge about the options. I did some research to see if it has been done but none of my searches of this forum turned up any identical efforts. Someone tried to do a laptop but they were not clear on the downgrade path or source. Thanks.

When I do that, the functions stalls almost immediately and says cannot load setupdd.sys file error code 4741. I read online that this could be fixed by unplugging and re-plugging the 2 RAM modules, but this didn't work. Any other suggestions? Does this mean the hard drive is damaged? Thanks for any suggestions

I have 2 hard drives in a RAID 2 (span) set up, and one of them finally bit the dust. It was a Maxtor that failed, the other is a WD. They are both 120GB drives. Now, mind you, I knew this was coming, as the drives had been exhibiting erratic behavior for some time now, and refused to be defragmented. I have backed up most of my important stuff, so I have chosen to format the WD drive (the one that is still good, I checked both with the tool on the Maxtor site), and just use that one drive by itself. Now how would I go about doing this? Would I simply unplug the Maxtor and leave the WD by itself, and install windows on it (after formatting it)? What about the RAID, will I have to get rid of it somehow, IE: is it implanted into the mobo itself? Sorry for all the questions, and I am typing from a different computer (obviously I guess) so I can still provide feedback during the harddrive changing process.

I am running Windows XP home.

UPDATE--When I start windows normally it takes a little longer than normal to finish loading, and then appears normal. However, when I try to start any program everything freezes. ctrl-alt-del does nothing. The same thing happens when loading windows in safe mode and safe mode with networking enabled. I have tried system repair through f8 several times and logging shows that system volume is corrupted but that it was repaired. (it has said this several times.)

After several minutes this error message appears:

I have a toshiba satellite l305-s5894 running vista. Windows would not allow me to load, uninstall, change, move, or open anything. Basically once windows had loaded, I was unable to do anything. I ran startup repair through f8 advanced boot options and the repair log showed only that the system volume was damaged. I hit finish to restart the computer which, after the toshiba startup screen, goes directly to the windows error recovery screen. I have tried both options (start windows normally and launch startup repair) these options respectively either bring up a blue error screen which only stays up for about 2 seconds before disappearing and returning to the windows error recovery screen or show that windows is loading and then shows a black screen with the pointer from which I can do nothi... Have you tried running Scandisk (in hard drive properties) with both options checked to see if the hard drive can be repaired? I am helping an elderly family friend diagnose his computer problems.  He has fallen victim to a fake technical support scam by a company called "Adroit Rescue", and has paid their "fee" for what they claim is a year's worth of technical support.  I have his computer, and it is disconnected from the internet.
In looking through the machine, I see that the scam happened on August 7, 2016.  A text document was placed on the desktop, with the title "COMPUTER TECHNICIANS".  Inside, it lists the technician's supposed name and employee ID, the company name and phone number, and a customer ID number.
On the day the scam happened, he said received a popup on the screen which froze his computer, then received a phone call from Adroit.  He had no idea how they acquired his phone number.  He also cannot remember how the popup occurred - either by clicking an email link, Facebook link, Microsoft Edge browser ad, etc.  He said they spent an hour on the phone with him.  They did their fake security presentation on the computer screen, and "unlocked" his machine after taking his credit card information over the phone.
How do I go about determining exactly what they have done to his machine?
By searching the hard drive, I see the following happened on August 7th:

A virus calling itself XP antivirus 2012 is stopping many of my useful programs. Unfortunately, it is also stopping me from running malwarebytes antimalware and hijack this. A similar thing happened in the past and I was able to run the programs from a flash drive to get the logs, but this virus is not letting me use that strategy.

I am using another computer to ask these questions, because the virus won't even let me come to this site.

I will give any other useful information as soon as I learn what may be useful.

A freelance developper has to send me an application he developped for me.
I found this person on internet and don't know much about him.
I highly suspect these files might either be infected or hide a feature that transfers data of mine to an external server.
So I really want to make sure that :
1. the files he sends me are not infected
2. the files he sends me can't include a trojan

How do you recommend proceeding in this specific case?

Ok here is the scoop:
I currently have a laptop running Win 7 x64 and I also have a desktop. This desktop, has a blank HDD. This desktop also has no optical CD/DVD drive installed currently. This means then that I must use a pendrive formatted to FAT (NOT FAT32 or NTSC) because this build is quite old but still has good hardware. I downloaded the official x64 Win7 Ultimate .iso file from microsoft. I now have two problems:

1)Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool says that the OFFICIAL .iso file is invalid and wont let me create a bootable usb stick. This I resolved by doing it manually using the program PowerISO to extract the files to the FAT formatted usb drive

2)It works... well sort of, I get to the "Install Now" screen and click that. Setup begins. The first screen i am faced with says that it is missing CD/DVD drivers with the error message "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. ". My question is WHAT DRIVERS?!, there is no CD/DVD drive and the setup wont let me past until I pick one.

For #2 I've read a couple threads and they said to switch from SATA to AHCI. Unfortunately i am unable to do this because my BIOS is Phoenic -AwardBIOS. Can somebody please tell me what i need to do because I am completely stumped.

EDIT: FYI the HDD is very old but still in working order

Alright already--after trying 4 times with no success to do a Windows Update and also trying the suggestions Microsoft has mapped out, I am at a loss as to how to proceed. When connected to the MS update site, it scans my computer for updates and then attempts to install the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool. Midway through the installation, it suddenly halts and says it was not installed.

I tried MS's suggestions which are mainly creating prompts for ActiveX controls. But to no avail. It does not help.

I assume that if I can't get this corrected, I will never be able to receive Windows updates again?

I have a genuine copy of Windows XP Home. It was installed on my computer when I bought it last year from a local retailer. I have easily done previous updates on this computer with absolutely no problem.

Help! Any suggestions?

I have spent the better part of the weekend recovering from a catastrophic computer failure. After the harddrive failed leaving me with nearly irrecoverable data, I opted to basically rebuild a new computer and abandoning the old one.

My new system consists of a new case, motherboard, CPU, RAM and harddrive, with my GPU, keyboard, optical drive, and mouse salvaged from my old computer.

Over the course of the weekend I've been reinstalling lost software, rebuilding the contents of my former software profile. Daunting to say the least. At some point over the course of the evening when my computer was unattended, something happened. When I woke up, the computer had shut down, but my attempts to restart the computer failed. "Windows did not shut down properly." When I chose "Start Windows Normally", the Windows splash screen would show, then shut itself down. I was presented repeatedly with "Windows did not shut down properly" dialogue. This time I opted to start Windows from it's a last known point ... aka a restore point.

At least I am now able to restart Windows, but what toll did it take on all my work? I'm not sure of all the changes I had made after the last automatic restore point? What happens to applications installed after the last restore point? Are they still installed? What about any settings type files of applications changed after the last restore point? A:Advice On How To Proceed After A System Restore

What happens to applications installed after the last restore point? Are they still installed?
Applications, installed at a later date than the date of the restored SRP, very likely need to be reinstalled

What about any settings type files of applications changed after the last restore point?
Tweaks, configurations, etc. done at a later date than the date of the restored SRP, very likely need to be redone.

Registry changes to reflect software installations/changes after the last restore point?
Registry changes done at a later date than the date of the restored SRP, very likely have to be redone.

How many changes ]and how much work was put in]were done at a later day than the date of the restored SRP may or may not "decide" if either redoing all those changes or a reinstall is better.

Hello ALL
I have ESET security on my sons laptop since last April. It has been scanning at start up and doing what it is supposed to. Recently he started having some breaking up of sound.
The MS jingle at start up and sometimes songs he plays. I thought it prudent to do some scans just to make sure no malware has snuck in.

Updated and did a quick scan with MBAM. Nothing found

Did an ESET smart scan and it listed threats as ?4 infiltrations?.
It stated it could not clean automatically and to pick a manual action. It does not list "clean" as an option

Only actions listed are:

No action taken

I am reluctant to simply delete theses without getting some outside advise.

Input form BC friends would be appreciated

This is what is listed as found by ESET:

C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\20\4ef244d4-49cf35e6 multiple threats No action

C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\7\124509c7-563d8dc7 a variant of Java/TrojanDownloader.Agent.NDJ trojan No action

My father has his own desktop that he uses daily for checking work emails and playing games. He has a bad habit of falling for "You must update ______!" ads, and downloading harmful products.
He tried to uninstall anything malicious, but today I found a "Searchqu Toolbar" installed. He has been having problems reaching various websites that work perfectly fine on any of our other computers. And earlier this week, his IE 11 became completely unusable, showing a white blank screen and no text on any toolbar buttons. (This I fixed by reinstalling and resetting IE)
He is still mysteriously unable to reach various sites, and gets frequent ads to more viruses (DomaIQ is particularlly frequent). We've run Kapersky full scans and updates many times to no results, so I'm not quite sure what to do next.
He is on Win7 x64, and prefers to use IE but has the same problems in Chrome too.

Hello, I am having a very confusing problem.

I just finished putting together a gaming rig, now for the confusing part: I can't get a PS2 or USB keyboard to work on the post screen to enter the bios most of the time. I have gotten the PS2 keyboard to work a few times from restarting the system a multitude of times, I have been able to alter the bios these few times but it will not work after I have saved and exited the bios.

Twice I have gotten past this problem, but the system would not boot, it would just restart automaticly and throw me back to post with a non-working keyboard.

My question I guess, is there anything I can do to make the PS2 or USB keyboard work consistantly in post/bios?

I'll list my specs now:
XFX nForce 680i LT SLI mobo
Intel E6660 Quad core cpu
OCZGX 850 wat PSU
2x evga nVidia 8600 GT 256mb DDR3 PCI-E cards in SLI
Corsair 2gb DDR2 Twin2X matched XMS2 ram

I have made sure everything is connected properly and that the mobo is not grounded on the case(properly fit with spacers/risers) and have tested all parts, everything seems to be in working order besides the keyboard not working 90% of the time in post.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Having trouble with new build, can't proceed to boot

Can you try another PS/2 keyboard to rule out that as the problem? If a second PS/2 keyboard behaves the same way, it would seem the fault lies with the motherboard, specifically PS/2 circuit.

Hello there. I am new to this forum so apologies for anything I have kept back that you need to know. Also, I'm not sure which area this question should be posted!

I was rendering on After Effects CS4 (portable) and it suddenly crashed (this happened about 2/3 times but I was able to re-start). Suddenly it went to the screen of black death.
It took a while but somehow I managed to get past the Windows booting up screen. I tried downloading a newer version of After Effects, but alas, the sobd showed up again. So it looks like anything that is power-hungry now causes the computer to crash.
Could this be RAM? I've read that a certain amount of RAM needs to be set for After Effects/more Ram is needed in general but I don't know how to find out if this is the case.
Each time the sobd appears (can't seem to get past it at the moment) I get a new set of errors.
My computer was custom built only 2 years ago.
I know it is an i7 quad core. I can't get past the booting up screen to find more information. Oh and I am using Windows 7.
If I can get past this I will update with more information. I understand that I haven't given enough computer specs to allow anyone to fully help out.

P.S Sorry for the bad typing - I've been looking at ways to fix the sobd all day.. My head hurts!

Someone has handed me an IBM Thinkpad, Model T43 (Type 2686) that doesn't proceed past the initial BIOS/POST splash screen with the IBM logo. It just sits there. No beeps, not errors, not reaction to keys pressed (like the IBM Access key). I've even removed the DVD and HD, and removed the keyboard panel to clean the inside out (very very little dust to speak of; clean overall) and re-seated both sticks of RAM. Same problem persists, even without the drives in their bays.

I'm not sure what to try next but am leaning towards a problem with the motherboard. I'd like to exhaust my options before declaring a replacement board to be the solution (though it probably will be).

A:IBM Thinkpad (T43) stuck at POST, doesn't proceed further

I don't see what else you can do if you can't get far enough to boot anything.

Except perhaps a 'recovery type' Bios flash if that laptop can do it, the sort where it finds the Bios file automatically if you press the correct key combination.

Hello All

My SONY VAIO VPCEB15FX laptop has been getting the S.M.A.R.T failures. I checked with SONY and since my laptop is more than 12 months old - could not get them to help me with this issue without paying (laptop started having issues exactly after 15 months- not so good for a branded laptop). So i thought i will try to handle this myself, created the recovery discs, repair disk and backed up all the data in 15 DVDs. I bought a WD Scorpio Blue hard drive (WD5000BPVT - Advanced Format Drive) and replaced the same in my laptop and started off with the recovery discs. I chose to restore complete system and it proceeded. Once it completed the process - the system restarted and the OS Setup began - now comes the issue. When the setup started it throws this error "Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's Hardware"

I ordered the SONY recovery discs - repeated the above RESTORE process - but still facing the same error

I have 6 computers at my office that have all been hit in various ways in the last two weeks, two i have found the vundo trojan and removed it. Did a scan with aswmbr and found nothing else on mine. the computer that i am working on right now i did a scan with malwarebytes and it came up empty, not one thing, which to me seems more than a little suspicious, this computer had lost files and shortcuts were corrupted when this problem started. anyway i did a scan with aswmbr and came up with the following two suspicious files.
Module: c:/windows/System32/drivers/dxgthk.sys
Module: c:/windoes/system32/ntdll.dll

Not being that knowledgeable I am trying to find out how to either make sure these are actually a problem and if so how to fix them. I have 3 other computers that I have had the same results with malwarebytes after they were hit with various signs of a virus or such. So I will be scanning all of those with aswmbr and if need be other programs so I will probably be asking for more help, lol. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Hello Everyone. Been awhile since I've been here. Been able to solve most of the problems I've encountered on my own since my first post in the hallowed halls of the techsupportguy forums.

Alas, I am in some dire need of help for a problem I've been having. I've checked other posts on here as well as other websites, but none of them seems to address my problem specifically, so forgive me if you have to repeat yourselves.

I've been having randoms BSoDs and hard hangs, most notably during gaming and while using browsers, but also less frequently whenever I'm just eating and chatting to a friend. I'll just be sitting there starting at my desktop and a Page Fault error will pop up and the system will lock. These problems have ranged from blue screens describing to page faults to what seems to be the monitor shutting off and going completely black. Can't even shut down the computer by going through alt-f4 or the start menu via macros, so it's not a monitor problem. NOTE: It also crashes in safe mode.

This doesn't happen at all on some days, but on others it seems as if it occurs 5-6 times in a row.

I started by doing a system restore and updating all of my drivers, but it hasn't helped. I thought that I might have some memory problems, so I went ahead and I ran windows memory diagnostic and it reported that there was a hardware problem with my memory. I have not run memtest86 yet, though.

I ran McAfee Antivirus (did not find anything), then ran Malware's Anti-Malware (found 3 objects, needed a reboot for total removal). However, upon reboot, WIN Defrag messages still appear. I have found the tutorial for removal of this, but I have one additional problem. The virus has turned my display black (I cannot see any icons). Initially, I could not see the tool bar either, but now I can at least see the tool bar. I launced Malware from the START button. I think I can follow the tutorial to remove the WIN, but can anyone help me to "see" my desktop once again???

This is what I have...
John is assigned specific part numbers, service numbers and companies... this list change quite often so I am having to constantly having to change the formula...

There are, lets say, 4 columns
Column 1 (Is where the formula goes) Column 2 is Part Number, Column 3 is PO and Column 4 is Company...

I first have to run the formula to check for specific companies and Part/Service Numbers:
=IF(C1=17185,"SHI", IF(C1=17321,"Service",IF(C1=17317, "Henry",IF(OR(AND(C1=17449,E1="Company 1"),E1="Company 2",E1="Company 3"),"Henry",IF(OR(C1=42128,E1="Company 4",E1="Company 5"),"Paul",IF(OR(D1=177736,E1="Company 6",E1="Company 7",E1="Company 8",E1="Comopany 9",E1="Company 10",E1="Company 11",E1="Comopany 12",E1="Company 13"),"Luke",IF(OR(E1="Company 14",E1="Company 15",E1="Company 16",E1="Company 17",E1="Company 18",E1="Company 19",E1="Company 20",E1="Company 21",E1="Company 22",E1="Company 23"),"Ron","Not Found")))))))

After the first pass, the values that come up "Not Found" are then matched against:
=IF(OR(AND(C2=15809,OR(D2=251606,D2=250480,D2=60010113,D2=248587,D2=248229,D2=246830,D2=246801,D2=246483,D2=245998,D2=245262,D2=244... Read more

I am a new member, and you are my last hope in ridding my computer of some sort of virus that has plagued it for the last couple of weeks.

I downloaded and began marching through the steps of the Preparation Guide for potential malware problem but was only able to get as far as step 6. The dds file from the link provided is not the same as the one in the Guide. Instead, I get a file called AutoCad Script, 512KB that, when I run it, produces a bunch of gibberish in Notepad and nothing like the scan shown on the screen shot in the guide.

I am unable to continue with the fix, and need further assistance.

Please help.

as my PC always got locked after some 10minutes (surfing on the net, Ms office use,...) I finally decided to reinstall Windows and made a recovery installation disk. Indeed, removing all software (office, Chrome,...) and reinstall it did not solve anything
I reinstalled it and noted the installation was very slow indeed (hours) until it stopped at step 47 out of 47. Waiting again for sooo long for step 47 to finish, it did not move on at all.

I restarted but then was asked by WIndows7 for an administrator password. How can I know, I did not create any user.

So restarted in safe mode where I could create a user with administrator rights (if did not create a pasword for it)
Then I could log on, but it brought me again immediately to the Toshiba Leading Innovation screen on top of windows again getting stuck again at step 47/47. No move at all again.

I then decided to lower the safety level to the lowest level as to "when software is installed you are not asked for authorisation".
Indeed, step 47 then finishes.
But then I get another installation step with comment "De systeemprestaties worden nu geclassificeerd". This is the dutch text meaning "Systemprestations are now classfied".
I progresses somewhat but after some 10 seconds, it stops and the progress bar does not continue anymore. Waiting hours does not help and sometimes windows automatically restarts. It starts again with executing step 47 out of 47, going back to "Systemprest... Read more

A:Recovery installation does not proceed on Satellite L850D

Hmmmm.... it is not easy to say what is wrong there.
Which notebook model do you have?
If I understand you right you didn’t create recovery media (DVD or USB), right?

Usually recovery image installation should do the job, except there is some problem with recovery image or HDD. I have installed recovery image many times and cannot imagine what else could be the problem.

Stupid thing is that you didn’t create recovery disc and you are not able to test it now using such discs. You are not able to test it with new HDD now because you don't have the recovery discs.
You know what; the problem is that there is no some kind of workaround. Either it works or not.

I really don't know what to say now. All you can try is to set BIOS to default settings and try again.
Please do it and send some feedback.

I have purchased an old Dell Inspiron 510 m. I have got HP PSC 1210 all in one printer. When ever i put HP printer installation CD in the PC, after few minutes it ask me to put original Microsoft Windows XP CD which came with the laptop to complete the installation.

As i have purchased an old laptop, the seller didn't had the original windows XP CD which came with the laptop.

This is what it says exactly-

Windows File Protection

Windows Files must be installed for your installation to proceed

Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-Rom Now.

There are three choices- Retry, More Information. Cancel

I have also used 2 methods suggested by Microsoft but that didnt worked. Here are the solutions prescribed by Microsoft-

Please help as without printer installation, my work is getting affected.

A:Windows Files must be installed for your installation to proceed

I believe the only way around is to get a Windows XP CD - Home or Professional - depending on what you have installed. It doesn't have to be the one that came with the laptop though so if you have a friend you can borrow one from it should work fine.

So I have this computer here, and it won't boot.

Here's what I know:
The computer has an AMD CPU.
The computer's motherboard has the Foxxconn logo all over it, so I assume that's the manufacturer of the motherboard.
The computer has 512 MB of RAM in it.

The computer completes the POST successfully, it beeps only once like normal, and proceeds to boot from the Ubuntu 8.04 CD I put in there.

It gets to the "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer" and other options screen.
Even If I select the memory test option, it just goes to a blank screen (black) with a flashing white cursor in the upper left hand corner.

I tried loading windows XP on it, but no luck there...when it tries to boot for the first time, just freezes and sits there with a blue-ish blank screen.

I have reset the BIOS' CMOS with the jumper, that doesn't seem to help at all.
I have taken out the video card that was added a while back and am using the motherboard's integrated graphics.
I have taken out everything that won't prevent the computer from booting (CPU, RAM, some boot source [CD drive], etc.)... but still no change.

Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on with this thing?

A:Computer won't proceed past a certain point when booting

Update the Bios
Or run Memtest

It sounds more likely a Video fault though
I'd remove the card
Then go to Bios, and confirm its (addon card) disabled

Also try disabling USB everything, in Bios; sometimes that's the issue as well

Hey, as the title says...

I get deadlocks with just google chrome on so i decided to use the driver verifier..

Upon running driver verifier, i get a hidclass.sys bsod. What do i need to do from here on?

A:Constant deadlocks, ran driver verifier, not sure how to proceed.

Can you give us some more info to work with. First off, please fill in your system specs so we know which hardware you're running. What are the 'deadlocks' you're getting? System just locking up? Does it just happen with Google Chrome or does it happen at other times too? Do you get BSODs at any other time?

Hello everyone,

I'm new here!

I'm facing a huge issue. I've formated my notebook without do the recovery disc.
First problem: I live in Brazil,
Second problem:Sony does not delevirey the recovery disc by worldwide and Brazil Sony does not suport my laptop.
My laptop product name is: VPC-F234FX

What should I do, I have not idea how to proceed with this issue and my laptop is not the same anymore. I tried to format the notebook then download all drivers one by one on sony website and install them, but it didn't worked very well.

The only solution that I found is if somebody make a upload from the recovery disc then I make the download.
I might be wrong. Any suggestion will be apreciated.

(If I'm posting this thread at the wrong place, please let me know)

A:How do I proceed with Sony Vaio VPC-F234FX issue?

Hello Thibertk and welcome to Seven Forums.

Did you format the entire hard drive or just the C: partition containing the operating system? If just the C: partition you may still have the hidden recovery partition available. Does your Vaio have an ASSIST button just above and to the right of the keyboard ? If yes, while your computer is off, press the ASSIST button to launch Vaio Care Rescue. Click Start Recovery Wizard. Select Tools and then select Start Advanced Recovery Wizard. Follow the prompts to restore to factory specs.

If you don't have an ASSIST button, start the computer and immediately start clicking the F10 key (top row of keyboard.) If the recovery partition is available you should see a screen called Edit Boot Options. Click the Enter key and select Start Recovery Wizard and follow the steps as above.

But if you don't have a recovery partition available I would forget about trying to do a recovery to factory specs. Even if you found someone with the exact same model Vaio, it's very possible that their computer has a different hard drive or a different motherboard and their recovery disks probably wouldn't work on your machine.

I would do a clean install and follow the instructions in this tutorial. There's a special note for Vaio owners at the bottom. And if you need an official Windows 7 installation disk (which contains many of the drivers your computer will need), Step # 1 has a link to an official Microsoft download site. Find the ISO of the Windows 7 ... Read more

Soon after I bought my laptop, the harddrive would occasionally make a beep sound and a couple of times the performance would be really really bad. Recently after downloading a 200mb file right upon completion of the download there were a couple of long beeps (much longer and more then one beep) that seems to match up with the download being completed. I got scared and made sure to downloaded macrium to create an image that i can use if something went wrong. Now in the last few days I have been getting a couple of blue screens and I am wondering if I should just go and buy a new harddrive.
the sound I hear is very similar to what I can hear from the first clip under "Hitachi/IBM", its called " Hitachi laptop drive with bad heads clicks once on spin up, then beeps". I dont know if the difference in brand means anything.

my harddrive is the "596GB SAMSUNG HM641JI" and is (i believe(?) out of warranty), I bought my laptop dec 2011.

I used seatools to scan do a short test and it passed, it is currently doing a long test and I will post back if it fails that test, otherwise please assume it passed.
Outside from the times where a sound is produced, I have not had a problem, its basically been a full year since this started?

Could someone please give me some advice on how to proceed?

Hi everyone! So after my (now uninstalled and expired McAfee) antivirus program detected some threats, I deleted them but got worried about my laptop being infected. After doing some research, I ran SFC, which showed I had some corrupt files that couldn’t be repaired (attached if it will help!)

I didn't know what to do with them, so I backed up my files to an external hard drive, uninstalled McAfee and installed Microsoft Security Essentials (ran it on Full Scan, too), ran both CCleaner and MalwareBytes, and finally, ran CHKDSK in Safe Mode for both the C: drive and the D: drive, hoping these might repair the problems. Now, all this went just fine, reporting no threats, etc., but when I ran SFC again it still shows the same corrupt files, and now I don't know what to do to protect my computer and resume using it more normally

I read that you can fix these corrupted files with a repair installation/inplace upgrade (running setup.exe from the Windows 7 DVD and selecting ‘upgrade’) or run... Read more

This began yesterday when I got computer freezing, this was in the message - "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM", with a shutdown countdown of a minute.

After running Malwarebytes, Webroot Antivirus and another antivirus that I found here, as well as rkill.exe, I now get "C:\WINDOWS\is-TN7EK.exe." with a completely blank screen upon turning on the computer. When I click on it, my regular desktop loads up, but I am unable to get online completely, without being in Safe Mode.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Hi. I was previously using windows 7 home premium 64 bit on my computer. The computer worked for around 2 years and one day suddenly went BSOD on me, with various problems from disk read errors to "video driver failed to initalize". After my roommate tried all the system recovery options (which all failed), he decided to use his recovery disk to do a factory reset of the computer (it's his computer). This got rid of most of the problems, with the exception of disk read errors from time to time. However, during the setup of the computer, we got the "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unpexted error. Windows installation cannot proceed." error, which just leaves us in an infinite loop (unless we get a disk read error). Windows 7 came pre-installed with the computer, so we dont have any installation discs. The only disc we have is a recovery disk that lets us get to the system recovery options. The computer was a plug-in-and-use computer meaning that we dont know much about the system specs other than the sticker that came on the side . I included it in case anyone is intrested in it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First post here folks.  Hope you don't mind me going right into the reason I find myself here.  A while back I purchased an Asus All-in-one from Bet Buy.  It was a display and I got it pretty cheap.  Figured it would be perfect for a garage computer.  Well, they said it was "DOD wiped" as the time, but I didn't seem to know what that meant of care.  Figured I'd just load Windows 7 and rock and roll.  So now I've been trying to load Windows 7 from a USD drive and I'm getting the following problem.  The install appears to proceed to a point where is asked to load the drivers.  So I went and found all the drivers from the Asus support pages and put them on the USB as well... But when I try to open them, that folder (the USB driver) is not visible or apparently accessible.  So since I have no way of apparently loading the drivers, the OS install does not proceed and now I fear I have one big paper weight.
Can anyone help me understand how to surpass this hurdle?  I'm relatively savvy and with some basic direction I think I could execute directions from someone of knowledge... but I'm just at a loss here.
Thank you in advance for any support and please let me know what if any additional information you may need to assist and I'll gather it to the best of my ability.
Thank you,

Hey all, My daughter in CA sent me her Dell Inspiron B120 (running XP Home I believe) with the C0000218 (Registry File Failure) message coming up at start-up. I had gone into this forum before and tried the steps outlined in this post: but was unsuccessful. Whether I start it in safe mode, normal mode, with the Win XP Home Reinstallation CD (SP1) in or out, it still goes to the blue error screen. Pressing "R" from the second the computer booted up never brought me to the Recovery Console screen so I was also unable to try that fix. Any help is greatly appreciated. I looked through various posts but none of them seemed to be as bad off as me.Thank you.JackEDIT: I pressed F12 at boot-up and was given an option of running various Diagnostic tests. I ran an extended test which passed in all fields except for 2 Read Tests which had errors that stated: "Uncorrectable Error on media is write protected. followed by 0F00:0244 and 0F00:1A44. Completed a fresh install, formatted, windows 7 home premium all is fine until it goes to start services (setup is starting services) then the screen flickers and I get the message. "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation"

This then becomes and endless loop, I have started again delete partitions format let windows do it all and the same result, tried safe mode - no go tried repair no go searched internet for help tried some of that stuff with dos prompt- still no go.

Tested Hard drive with windows - no issues, tested with third party software no problems

Laptop originally come with Win7 and even tried to cheat and install xp but that also failed, thought if I could get xp on I could upgrade - but failed.

In your hands community

A:Computer restarted unexpectedly windows installation cannot proceed

You are deleting all partitions during the booted install to get it cleanest, and following the other steps for a Clean Reinstall Windows 7? Those steps assure you'll get and keep a perfect install.

If after doing those proper preparations it still hangs Starting Services, then first try entering Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation to disable any erroring drivers shown there, and if that doesn't help try new installation media as discussed in Step 1 of tutorial

This is my first post so 'hello' to everyone and 'thanks' in advance. Although I'm a novice, I'll attempt things if there are clear instructions and I know how to run scans, etc., but I don't have much experience beyond that. Also, I have read the forum rules and hope not to make any mistakes, but please forgive me if I do as this is all new to me. Thanks. Now for the problem:My desktop pc has been infected with a browser hijacker from Innovate Direct. I used the self-help page on this site to try and remove it. I managed to download Rkill and it did its thing, but when I tried the next step by downloading Malwarebytes, it would not allow me to do so and kept hijacking my browser. There isn't really anything important on the desktop, in fact there isn't much at all on there, so a friend of mine is suggesting re-installing Windows 10.  Would this be the best option or should I try removing the malware? And if so, how would I do that if it keeps hijacking my browser? Many thanks Oo I feel like a fibber, I've just found out that I have posted on this forum before.  It was 8+ years ago so I had totally forgotten.  That said, I'm sure I know even less now than I did then, which can't be a good thing. Anyway, I just felt I needed to clarify that. Thanks again Edit: Moved topic from Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

but that was it no more lines of information after that.
I downloaded the file from the suggested website. Installed it, performed the next two command lines and still no results.
