Having a large number of problems. Hoping for help.

Q: Having a large number of problems. Hoping for help.

I think my computer has a rootkit, and a fake/altered version of google chrome on it,  along with possibly alered system files which ensure ease of access to it.

Any help would be appreciated. I have already run a FRST scan, but have yet to do anything related to fixing the problems as I am more than certain I would end up breaking something. That's what happened on a laptop I attempted to remove a Zeusbot from.

HD wipe and OS reinstall fixed that particular problem, but doing that with this PC is not something I am all that keen on at the moment.

I have attached the two log files to this post. Hoping to hear back soon.

I run a software tool that often generates 75,000 - 100,000 small files that need to be deleted after the software exits. Right now, it can take 8 - 10 minutes to permanently delete all these files from a single run, and I usually have 4 - 8 runs to deal with, so do the math...

I have tried shift-del to permanently delete but it doesn't work - Windows still copies everything to the recycle bin. (I thought shift-del was supposed to bypass the recycle bin...)

Also, while moving the files to the recycle bin, I often get an error message: "Error 0x80070050: The file exists."

Bottom line is that it takes a *really* long time just to delete these files and I need a quicker way to do it.

What's the solution?

Thanks in advance,

rgames

I will shortly need to move a large number (20,000) very large (20-30Mb) image files and associated tiny xmp sidecar files from one hard drive to another.

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

A:moving large number of large files to new drive

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

Hi cowboy5345.

The crash dump is not pointing to anything clearly, but it gives a hint of a memory corruption. It either may be a failing physical RAM, or it may be some driver passing bad information toe the memory.

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

If it does not show any error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

   Tip

If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of en... Read more

I need some help in C++. Hope someone could give some help..

How could I change base of a very large number? For example I want to change the number 7146329081 into base 32768. I did this by hand and the answer is 6 21480 21497. I could do the last part (21497) but the rest I got stuck.

Here is the function that I have so far..

#include <vector>
#include <cmath>
#include <iostream>

const int BASE = 32768;
void normalization(const vector<int> &vec)
{
int carry = 0, digit = vec[0], x = 0, totalcarry = 0;
vector<int> temp;
while ( x < vec.size() )
{
digit *= 10; totalcarry *=10;
x++;
digit += vec[x];
if ( digit > BASE )
{
carry = floor ( (digit+0.0) / BASE );
digit = digit - carry * BASE;
totalcarry += carry;
if (totalcarry > base) // Stuck in here!
temp.push_back(digit);

}
}
cout << "Inside Carry : " << totalcarry << endl;
}

if u want to test it..put this in main :
vector <int> t;
t.push_back(7); t.push_back(1); t.push_back(4); t.push_back(6);
t.push_back(3); t.push_back(2); t.push_back(9); t.push_back(0);
t.push_back(8); t.push_back(1);

normalization(t);

Any help would greatly be appreciated...I spent alot of time already on this and getting frustrated...

Thanks

You could try something like robo-copy which may be a little faster. What throughput are you getting between the drives?

I have a one year old computer running WIndows XP. Each week while running Norton Scan, my files seem to increase by a couple of thousand a month. My computer is not running slow and everything seems normal but I now have 185,000 files on it. I daily delete cookies and temporary internet files using the tools function on the menu. I am not downloading anything other than the updates from Norton and WIndows. This has been happening for about six months. Why are so many files being added? Thank you for any help you can offer.

Here is the situation.
We work a lot with IP Cameras (or sometimes called network cameras). Most of these IP cams have the capability to send jpg images to an ftp server when motion is detected.
The jpg image is about 40 to 50k in size and are stored in a folder named for the current date, so each day a new folder is created at midnight and all of the images for that 24 hour period are stored there.
Anyway, what is happening is that when these cameras ftp this information to an xp machine on the local 100mb network, some folders end up with A LOT of jpg images in them. In one day, one camera can store over 100,000 images in a folder. Opening these folders takes a long time...sometimes up to 5 minutes just to see the contents.
I have tried both using and not using File Indexing, but it seems to be the same speed either way.
From what I understand, the main resource File Indexing uses is memory. The systems these images are being saved to are WinXP Pro machines running at 1GHZ minimum to 4GHZ maximum and memory ranges from 512MB to 2GB.
I watch the task manager while loading these directorys and CPU is never over 4% so I assume the CPU has little to do with whatever is causing the system to take so long reading the files.

Anyone have any ideas as to how I can speed up the process of viewing these folders with so many images in them?

Hello -

An end user wants to quickly gather the mail addresses of every retailer on this site:

http://www.hydrofarm.com/wheretobuy.php

I found a nice free email extractor application:

http://emailextractorpro.com/

However, since there are no actual links to the retailers (all within the same .php page), the extractor cannot find them. Anyone have any ideas on an easy solution to this? It'll be a huge pain to go through and get them all manually. I tried finding the full web address to each state within the source, but with no luck. If I had that I could at least just have the extractor run on each state, which would still save a lot of time.

Thanks!

I'm trying to copy a DVD catalogue with over 30,000 product images onto a USB backup drive. Windows 7 Explorer cannot seem to do this. It copied some of the files but then just stopped copying.

I rebooted my machine and tried to copy the files again but Windows reports that it's going to take almost 4 hours to copy! I suspect, however, that it will fail again to complete the task. The backup device has a data transfer rate of 450Mbps so it really shouldn't take that long, surely?

Is there other software I should use that's better than Windows Explorer? Or some other method to accomplish what I would have expected to be a simple task?

Hi there
It's a "Roundabout" way but this should work and be quite fast.

If you have a decent backup program (NOT WINDOWS STANDARD BACKUP) that is capable of copying DATA as well as just "Imaging" a disk / partition then this method will work quickly and easily.

I'm using ACRONIS but any decent commercial backup program will work similarly.

1) Backup the data to a spare area on any disk. The file will be called something like xxxx.tib in the case of acronis.

2) Now Restore the data to your USB device.

Job done --easily and very quickly normally.

Hello:

I have a computer owned by the family of a friend that is complaining about a large number of unwanted programs being installed on the computer. The family stated that some of those programs began opening pop-ups advertising various things, e.g. virus scans. One member of the family went through the control panel and manually removed several of the programs. Subsequently Ccleaner, McAfee, and MBAM scans have been run, each identifying varying PUPs and being instructed to remove them. According to the family most of the PUPs appear to be gone, however there does seem to be a small number (1 to a small handful) that reappear upon reboot.

The computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. At this point I am looking for advice on tools or techniques to verify the issue is confined to PUPs and there hasn't been a malware infection, and to identify any remaining PUPs and remove them.

I do not have regular access to the machine in question, however the friend does and will be able to run any scans, pull information, etc. as needed.

Thank you!

I did some work for a small company (replacing all PCs with newer PCs). They wanted to donate the PCs to a local youth group that I help out with and I told them I would take care of it.

I now have eight (8) Dell Optiplex Gxi 133 and seven (7) Dell Optiplex Gxi 166. All the hard drives have been fdisked. All hardware is identical (except for the processor). I even picked up nine (9) Dell Lattitude 166.

And may be hard to believe, but company was very good about keeping ALL original documentation and software. (Windows 95 and Office 97).

What would be the easiest software to use to make one good image and then transfer to all the PCs...and one image of the laptops? I really don't have time to individually load everything on each PC and laptop.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!

b) Some times files show up in the search list, but when I click on these to delete them, a message 'the file no longer exists in this locatin' shows up. why does the system show names of files that 'no longer exist' in the search location?

c) Some times a message appears 'you do not have permission for this action' when I try to delete a file. I could delete these files on previous occasions. Some times I have to run 'take ownership' 2-3 times before I can delete the file.

My friend decided to download something without double checking, and via installation a huge number of unwanted software were installed on his computer. Immediately after installation, both Chrome and Internet Explorer were modified. After restarting the laptop once, the following things happened

1. The screen brightness was changed, and power option could not be accessed to revert the change
2. The "start" taskbar was changed from blue to white, which usually indicated something was changed in the power and/or graphics setting as far as I know.
3. Internet access was removed, and windows could not detect any hardware to connect to the internet. The laptop's model number was Asus X555L and it ran on Wireless before.

My computer is a few years old and over time - I appear to have accumulated over 700,000 files (per Norton AV during full system scan). In review of Windows Explorer (including hidden and system files) - I can only find about 150,000 files total. What and where are all those unaccounted for files - and how can I get rid of them? (makes scans etc. a real time consumer). I have CyberScrub Privacy software which cleans the index.dat files (as least as far as I have been able to tell). But the number of files continues to grow. Thanks for any help!! I have certainly come to respect the knowledge base here - you people rock pretty hard - DB44

Hi,

I'm trying to delete 1500+ hidden files (located in different directories) from my flash memory. But when I highlight them all and choose "delete", I get the "Preparing to delete" dialogue which says:
Time remaining: Calculating...
Items remaining: Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)...
Speed: Calculating ...Click to expand...

And it stays like this FOREVER until I cancel the operation. It will only work when I delete about 50 files at a time, which I'm not willing to do every time.

I've tried this both on my laptop and desktop with Windows vista business/home premium service pack 1, and it still didn't work.

Any idea how I can solve this issue?

UPDATE: It appears that the issue occurs only when I'm deleting files locating in different directories through the 'search' function. It's still an issue though, and I'd like to delete all files of a specific kind instead of doing it through each and every directory.

Your help is much appreciated

Hello. I am trying to permanently erase about 67,000 files from my recycle bin and other places on my computer. I found these files as a result of a recovery program called 'Recuva'. Whilst Recuva shows a huge list of deleted files, I have no means of accessing and transferring these files to the 'File Shredder' that I also have on my computer thats running Windows 10. I'm thinking there must be an easy way of getting rid of so many files apart from the enter individual file or folder method as prescribed by the File Shredder program.Can you help me please?

A:File Shredder and large number of files

Why do you need to shred these files? I would just empty the recycle bin.
File shredder is a program to eras "personal document" from your hard drive to prevent anyone recovering them. If you keep the original or updated files on the same drive it's a waste of time.

I started using Process Explorer (Process Explorer) a few days ago instead of the standard Task Manager. This was so that I could determine which program is blocking access to some JPG files I recently downloaded.

But thats not what I want to talk about. Take a look at the following screenshot:

The AUDIODG.EXE process has an impossibly high number of handles - 1,344,509. The screenshot was taken a few minutes before writing this post. Last night, the handle count for that process was just a little over 930,000.

A google for AUDIODG.EXE reveals that it is part of the Vista Audio Service. The follow is extracted from Larry Osterman's blog on MSDN:

What is AUDIODG.EXE?
One of the new audio components in Vista is a new process named audiodg.exe.

If you look at it in taskmgr, the description shows "Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation", but that's not really particularly helpful when it comes to figuring out what it does.

The short answer is that audiodg.exe hosts the audio engine for Vista. All the DSP and other audio processing is done in audiodg.exe. There are two reason it runs outside of the windows audio service.

The first is that there's 3rd party code that gets loaded into audiodg.exe. Audio hardware vendors have the ability to install custom DSPs (called Audio Processing Objects or APOs) into the audio pipeline. I need to create a list of sequential numbers in hexidecimal (0-F) and need it formatted a certain way

00000000-00000000-00000000-00000000
to
FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF

The number is 32 to the x16 and I do need the hyphens in the numbers and a "," in front of every number and a "." at the end of every number.

Then put all numbers into a plain text file.

If any one can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, I don't think 50 is a big number - but I do agree 50 restore points are really more than what one (read: I) need.

That explains a bit or two. Will either take down these restore points to a sane number or apply this patch. Unsure which of them, but I will definitively work on this.

About a week ago my PC somehow became infected with the Google redirect virus. I started searching for information about how to remove this, downloaded some programs (which may have caused more problems), and eventually discovered that the machine was infected with somewhere around 159 viruses. At first it was still possible to use the computer, but eventually the machine started freezing almost immediately after booting up. Before it came to that extremity, I had managed to download the Combofix program. Although I had read that this was not to be used without expert supervision, my machine had gone so haywire that I was on the verge of erasing the hard drive and losing all files. Before doing that, I decided I might as well try to run Combofix, which remarkably was still able to run despite all the infections/freezing desktop. I ran it in spite of being unable to disable my Symantec anti-virus program, as whenever I would disable it, it would automatically re-enable itself within moments, and I simply could not find a way to disable it. Combofix seemed to fix everything, and the PC was running well again.However, today my weekly antivirus scan alerted me to a large number of viruses, all but one of which it quarantined. The one that was not quarantined is titled atapi.sys.vir. I would be curious to know how my system became this badly infected with so many viruses, and especially how I can delete the atapi virus, and delete all the other viruses which have been qua... Microsoft did not explain just how slow the startup process gets, but it appears that boot performance degradation is sufficient for users to become aware that something it’s going on.

“This issue occurs because the boot plan for the ReadyBoot feature exceeds the size limit of 512 kilobytes (KB). Each restore point creates a snapshot of Windows that Volsnap.sys must validate during the startup process,” Microsoft explained.

“When you create many restore points, the boot plan for the ReadyBoot feature eventually exceeds the size limit of 512 KB, and cannot be stored. Therefore, startup I/O operations are not precached, and the startup process is slow.

Does anyone know what might be causing this slow performance? And is it related to the XP operating system?

Hello,
The aim of this post is twofold: first, I would like to help people who are as irritated with Windows7 explorer as I am. Second, I would like to spark a reaction from Windows developers and maybe understand why the -7explorer is as painful as it is.

The issue is simple:
I would like to sort, rename and visualise the large number of photos I have.
While everything was working perfectly with the previous Windows versions I had, these basic tasks have become nearly impossible with Windows7. Cancelling the automatic sorting is difficult, renaming files results in the explorer getting lost and visualising files per alphabetic order appears to be impossible. Finally, even having a good layout on the screen is mission impossible after moving or renaming a few files.
At this point I hasten to add that I am not a beginner with windows or computing in general. I have used previous Windows versions for years both at home and at work, and can do my own bits of code if needs be.

The only solution found so far:
After doing a fair amount of reading (and wasting a lot of time), I decided the only solution was to go for an alternative to Windows7 explorer. I personally chose to download? FreeCommander? but there are many other alternatives. So far it answers all my needs and I have stopped using Windows7 explorer.

My question to Windows developers:

Why on earth wreck a product that worked so well before? This is beyond me and I would sincerely like to understand. Anyway my m... Read more

A:Sorting files with Windows7 Explorer - Large number of issues

*FACEPALM*
You just don't know how to use it
To cancel automatic sorting, right-click on an empty space, and in the "View" sub-folder, uncheck "Auto arrange icons".
Secondly, with the first setting, renaming files will not make the lost, because after you renamed them, they will not be automatically arranged again.
The third issue, visualizing files per alphabetic order, is simple again. Just right-click, go to "Sort", and press "Name". Now, all the files will be sorted by name, alphabetically.

Hi there,

I have obtained an Excel 2010 workbook containing 1339 sheets of tables. The tables are all in the exact same format and represent an itinerary. Each sheet was extracted from a different pdf page and each entry is unique. There are 34 row entries on each sheet and each entry has 9 columns.

I need to be able to combine all 1339 tables into one master table on one sheet so I can sort and filter as one.

Many posts have discussed the Consolidate function however this involves naming ranges for each sheet. Obviously I can't do this easily for 1339 sheets.

Is there a way I can get all the data appended or concatenated into one master sheet? I have tried importing to Access 2010 to help but it only appears to allow one sheet at a time.

I feel like this should be easy so apologize if it is in fact.

Thanks

Hi there

If you have Loads (and I mean Loads) of small files - e-books, excel data. word docs, emails etc etc then File explorer runs REALLY slow on even fast devices

I gave up moving this lot after about 4 hours. (W10 machine).

Switched to Linux system -- did it in 45 mins similar hardware to W10 machine - both Real machines --not VM's and direct transfer (not via LAN).

What gives !!!!!

I know it's only a 1 time move but similar hardware with identical HDD should not have a HUGE difference in the move --note in fact Linux actually has hard a harder job since the file system was NTFS which isn't a native Linux file system either. Source system external HDD on USB 3 device,, target systm larger HDD device on USB3 device -- no hubs - USB 3 transfer working OK on both W10 and Linux so reasonable comparison.

IMO the NTFS file system has serious problems if you start messing around with this type of data. !!!! Perhaps Ms need to look at a better file system for Mass storage devices. 5 and 6 TB HDD's are quite common now even for consumer sector and not expensive either.

I know this is an exceptional job but it does show that something in File explorer isn't very efficient once you start manipulating large volumes of data - especially in small files. (Approx 290 TB of data consisting of 128,000 files in 55,000 odd directories)

I'm usually quite happy with Windows - but there is definitely a problem here. Fortunately it was a 1 off job though !!!!.... Read more

First, I wanted to say thanks for taking the time to review this aggravating problem, and thanks for such a great site!

I've recently purchased a used Dell Dimension E510 from an auction site for cheap. It came loaded with Ubuntu, however upon its arrival, I loaded Win-XP Pro, from a corporate CD that I have, which allows me to use it on multiple systems.

The install went fine and everything seems to be working great. The boot and shut down times are excellent. The problem is I have not been able to get it to connect to the Internet regardless of what I have tried. I have been able to establish an IP, via ipconfig, but nothing more. I am not even able to ping any sites either. I never did try and connect prior to loading XP, so I don't know if it was an issue with Ubuntu as well.

The tower runs along side of my main tower and I use a KVM switch to change back & forth between systems. One computer connects fine and the new (used) one does not. I am NOT using a router at this time either.

Below is a list of what I have already tried, without any success. I am hoping that I am missing something, and hopefully somebody can point it out to me. I have also included some screen shots to assist in any diagnosis.

Again, thank-you for taking the time to look over my question, as I am out of options.

I have a ton of media I'd like to transfer over to an external HDD.
I don't want to simply select a bunch of folders and drag n drop over to the backup drive tho, I want to select individual files (or folders) and save them into their respectively named folders on the backup drive.

If I do this with the default windows file copy manager (via the drag n drop method) I'll end up with dozens of "File Transfer" windows, each with its own percent completion status, and it tends to choke out my machine.

Is there a 3rd party software that will allow me to individually select the files/folders I want and add them to a queue, then batch transfer the whole list to a user-specified destination path?

I'm thinking an FTP client but that seems a little overkill. Kinda looking for something simple and easy.

I belong to a large group that I send out emails to occasionally. Outlook 2007 on my Vista computer will not let me send to the whole group in one email. I have to split it into about 6 different emails to get it to go. When I was using Outlook 2000 on XP I did not have to do this. What setting can I use to force Outlook 2007 to accept all the addresses I want to enter so I just have to send my newsletter one time?

In a related question...Outlook 2007 will also hang up and not send the email to my group IF there is one email some where in the group that it does not like.
TWO QUESTIONS:
1) is there a way to force the email to go even if there is one bad address in the group and just bounce back an error message on the problem email?

2) Is there a way to make it tell me which email it has a problem with so I can manually remove it? Outlook Express will at least kick back a helpful error message and tell me what email address is causing a problem so I can just remove that name to make the email go to the rest of the people.

Thank you,

Recently I had a pretty bad virus on my computer. I sent it to someone and he removed various trojans and installed his recommended virus-protection softwares on it.

It's not a result of him doing anything to it, as it was happening before, I assume as a result of the virus, but now when I log on, after typing in my password, it displays the 'welcome' loading screen for a ridiculously long time (about a minute), but then the screen goes completely black and all I see is my pointer. After another minute or two it actually loads the desktop.

Then there's Fraps and some other programs, which, before the virus, opened fine, but now asks for admin permission in order to open. What's even stranger is that it can't uninstall. When I start the uninstall process it just opens the 'uninstall' window and gets stuck there.

My computer also seems to be slower than usual.

Everything seems so messed up, should I just totally wipe my hard drive and reinstall everything? Most of my files are stored through Steam, which is mainly online, so I only have about 10 gigabytes of saved files to back up...

I decided to use system recovery that I got from HP recently after my laptop wasn't included with it and some thing wrong happened. I was using the recovery DVD when an error message appeared. It says that it couldn't load some stuff of the DVD so popped it open and clean the DVD with a microfibre cloth the same error message displayed again. I didt the same thing again but this time the error message is different from before. It claims that the HDD is missing,  checked that the HDD was fine but the problem still presists. Then, my HDD makes some weird noises that it wasn't supposed to do. What is going on? My laptop is running a 500GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium, AMD Radeon 5000 series with 2GB of Crosair RAM.

A:Large Problems With Recovery

I suspect a problem with the hard drive. Can you access the BIOS? Tap F10 as you power up, go into the BIOS and look for the hard drive test and run the full length routine. Post back the results. Recovery will fail on a bad hard drive and I suspect it may have been giving you problems that led you to decide to reinstall the OS.

Yesterday, my computer was working well as I was on it. Then, my step-father, told me that he signed us up for our ISP's protection service (Bell Sympatico - DSL). After installing it, I left my computer on and went to sleep (I was sending my friend a few videos and didn't want to wait). The reason I mention the protection service is that it was the latest change that I made to my computer.

Anyways, when I woke up, my computer rebooted itself and it was frozen on the desktop with the protection loading screen showing. I tried clicking around and realized that it was frozen. Eventually I got fed up and rebooted.

Now, it wouldn't even get to the desktop. I saw my wallpaper, but no icons (I remember my friend showed me a command in Task Manager to basically reset your desktop, but I can't remember it). I loaded the computer in safe mode and it seemed to work fine. When I re-entered it in normal mode, a new pr... Read more

A:Two problems. One Small, One Large

Excellent Post ! Clear, well-written and will all the necessary information presented well. We should wrap this thing with gold gilding and use it as an example for other, more-muddled people.

My first impulse is to wonder how you got to a Repair install. Were/are you able to go to a System Restore point first ? If normal mode doesn't work, try safe mode.

The next step on the "hierarchy" would be to try sfc /scannow from Start>Run.

Please note I am trying to side-step the whole issue of the password problem, cause frankly I'm cluesless on that one.

Do you have Anti-Virus software installed, and if so what is it, and have the definitions been recently updated ?

Perhaps one method to try is to actually assign a password to your Admin account (I assume you can log in, but cannot run the repair install) and see if that "overwrites" whatever corrupt condition you are experiencing.

Hey, i'm new here and this is my first post.

I have a 3 year old PC that worked fine the past 3 years but now it started giving me problems, and i want to know if they are related to each other and if i need to buy a new component.

My specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ on 2.7ghz
Motherboard: ASUS M2N MX SE Plus
RAM: 4GB Kingston
GPU: Gigabyte ATI Radeon 4670
Power Supply: No brand, a standard 400W that came with my PC's case

I play alot of new games, and my PC doesn't run them all very well, but it runs them at a playable frame rate. But lately it started shutting down and the screen stopped working...
Here's a list of things that happened to my PC:
-When i play a game for about 10 minutes the screen goes blank but the game keeps going and the screen says "No signal Input"
-When i play PC intensive games for about 10 minutes the PC shuts down and when i restart the PC, the CPU fan doesn't turn on and i have to wiggle the Motherboard-Power Supply connector to make it work
-When i play on my standard Graphics card (The one listed above) the games almost always crash but when i play on the reserve GPU on my motherboard (Nvidia GeForce 6150E) the games run without any flaw and my PC never crashes.

I'm worried it might be either my Graphics card died on me or the Power supply gives in to the power my Graphics card needs...

I'm about to buy a new computer next year but until then i only have enough money to buy a cheap power supply ... Read more

I have issuses with Google Mail since I changed to Internet E 8. I need it for college but it won't show when I click on the mail button. I have tried disabling the add-ons.
I sometimes find that my browser redirects itself and I keep getting a google security check saying that there is unusual traffic coming from the pc. Also there are ads coming up on the lower part of my screen. I have AVG free and have checked for Malware etc. and it says there are none.

Okay, so i've been trying to get my computer back up to its full speed potential as its been running slowly recently. I've run multiple virus and spyware scanners already.
My first problem is related to what i was trying to do in the first place, i noticed that porgrams that shouldn't be using a lot of CPU, were. For example Microsoft word was using up to 20% for some reason.
The second problem is that whilst i was trying to fix the computer, i started to get constant error messages for Iexplorer, dispite the fact that it wasn't even running. The Dr watson package of programs keeps on opening up windows telling me that there is an error with Iexplorer. I've stopped the windows from opening my disabling error message reports, but it seems that drwtsn32.exe and dxtexts.exe keep loading as background processes.
Any help that you can offer would be appreciated, and here's my HJT log, and 'm sure there are some problems there:

I am repeatedly have problems transferring large files between my VISTA Ult 64 machine and my XP Pro 32 bit machine. While trying the transfer files from the Vista machine to the XP machine, the file transfer usually stops and drops off. If I do the transfer of the files from the Vista machine via the XP machine, the files transfer without a hitch. It appears that the transfer cannot be initianted from the VISTA Ult Machine.

Someone must know why this is occurring.

A:Problems with Large FIle transfers

You might give TeraCopy beta a try.

I've been using the 32 bit beta for quite a while. You can change the settings for
buffer sizes in the Options.ini file until you hit an optimum. The other issue may have
to do with file sharing permissions firewall etc.. but at least Vista Shell Copy issues will be out of the loop.

Problem:

Having technical difficulties with large images. Bitmaps seem to be saved differently depending on the program doing the saving.

Programs used:

Photoshop CS5 Etended; Gimp 2.6.10; Infranview

Description:

I am doing some image enlargements for a game experiment. Without going into unneeded detail, I am increasing the size of the game world through some created tools. The tools used extract some of the image files from the game in .bmp format. The process after the images are extracted should be simple, "make the image larger". For now I am doing some experiments to become familiar with the programs and am simply doubling the image sizes. Here are the images I am using right now:
(LEGEND: O=Original Size, D=Doubled Size, T=Tripled Size)

1) O=12288x9216 pixel bitmap (.bmp) ; D=24576x18432 ; T=36864x27648

2) O=13056x9792 pixel bitmap (.bmp) ; D=26112x19584 ; T=39168x29376

3) O=12288x9216 pixel raw (.raw) ; D=24576x18432 ; T=36864x27648

The real problem is the tools that I am using to increase the image sizes. When I use Photoshop to increase the image size the way it saves the bitmap makes it so other programs cannot read the file (including GIMP). When I use GIMP to increase the image size it will increase it properly (although taking a very long time) but it won't save the file giving me a "glib error" which as I understand is related to virtual memory, even though I have allocated about 12 gigabytes of virtual memory for each program ... A question...just how big are these A3 files? Corel Draw has a pretty good 'fit to size' option in it's print dialogue box, so maybe also try reducing the drawing to A4 but printing to A3

When I looked into my AVG virus vault today I was concerned to see a series of trojan droppers and downloaders. There were 7 entries, and in order here's how they appeared:
trojan horsedropper.agent.CRO (twice)
trojan horse downloader.agent.INL (3 times)
trojan horse downloader.generic.3NPE (twice)
trojan horse backdoor.generic.2AJH
trojan horse dropper.agent.CRP

then when I ran Panda software these 2 viruses were found:

virus: trj/killav.FD (this one is located in the system32 file)

Ok, so, as fas as I know at least, this all started this morning. I was surfing around the web on my usual sites (facebook, myspace, gmail, etc). Decided to take a diversion and check out a streaming video site. Well, I got there and the site displayed a message saying that my computer was running a DOS attack and therefore could not be on their site.

Well, I thought this was strange, so I ran the Microsoft Onelive (or whatever its called) scan of my computer. I then left for work. I got home and this is when things got really bad.

When I arrived home the scan results stated that it found 9 conditions, 2 critical conditions, and fixed 4 of them. It said the rest could not be fixed. I said "ok, well, that sucks" and then proceeded to try to get online to see what the problems were and what to do about them. I then realized that I could not connect to the internet at all. I tried a number of URLs, and a couple other internet applications and no connection across the board.

I then decided to run spybot to see if it could get rid of more than the microsoft program did. Spybot won't even open. I double click the icon, you hear the hard drive start to spin up, and then nothing. Its the same problem with any other anti-virus software too.

What do I do, Help!!!

My girlfriend's computer has a number of things wrong with it, which I believe are all related somehow:
googlemaps doesn't work
animated gifs aren't animated
hotmail (windows live)
myspace tagging

To me, it sounds like a javascript problem. I've checked the options and she's definitely got javascript turned on. So I'm stumped as to what else it might be.

Side note: She's using IE6 (despite me trying to get her to move to firefox or at least IE7). could this have anything to do with it?

Many thanks in advance.

Can you install Firefox just to test that this is a browser issue? I am thinking the same but it's good to eliminate as many things as we can.

I have no idea what the problem could be, I tried redownloading the game, installing other games over 1.5gigs, rebooting, running virus/spyware checks and still. What happens is I start to install, get to around 80% and the installer freezes. And it sounds like my harddrive just keeps trying to go and go but it doesn't, I let it go for around 20 mins and nothing. It freezes so bad that even after doing an endtask it doesn't go away for a couple minutes.

Also, it seems like an overall slowing of my computer has been going on, it might be in my head but I don't know if my CPU is just getting worn or what. Does anyone know of any free tune up programs that are good? I want to rule everything out before I just reformat.

On top of thaaat, when I rebooted Windows goes and tells me that my copy of WindowsXP isn't genuine. "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" is the message. Any help on this would be appreciated too, even though it's not that big of a deal.

Edit: My windows restore disk is a Gateway system recovery CD/DVD and isn't the one I got with my computer I'm on right now. Is it safe to use this disk?

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 running XP. I also have a Seagate 250 gig external hard drive where I keep music, photo, and movie files. Lately, I began to get delayed write errors when copying/moving files from the c drive to my external (g) drive. I looked online for some fixes, went into the properties of both drives, and disabled the cache (whatever that means!). Now, I'm not getting the delayed write errors, but the moving/copying of large files is taking much longer that it was before. Copying a 1 gig folder will now take up to 5 minutes, when before any of these issues started, it used to take a few seconds. I did a chkdsk of the external drive and the issue continues. Any ideas what could be going on? Thank you all in advance for your replies.

I have a WD 200GB disk I use for capturing video from my DVi camera.

I capture 1 tape (60min) in one file approx. 13GB in .avi format.

I have about 60% of the disk filled and defragmented, scanned for bad sectores etc..

When playing back a file - CPU goes to 100% and video doesn't play smothly at all (stops and starts all the time).
Tried Windows Media Player, RealOne and Adobe Premier.

Other files around 600-900 MB works fine when playing.

I have a Dell Dimension 8300, P4 3GHz, 60GB (C), 200GB (D) film drive), 40GB (F), 512MB memory, 128MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800.

Does anyone have any good suggestions?

A:Performance problems with large (10GB+) AVI files

Wow. thats sure is one big video file. From your system specs you look pretty well setup. With video editing and graphic intesive programs you need alot of memory. I suggest you upgrade to 1GB of memory and make sure all your memory is pc3200 or higher, maybe even run dual channel if you can. Have you done anything with your virtual memory settings? Tweaking your virtual memory can help greatly.

Can someone help me figure out how to make this program output Random Numbers? I tried the srand(time(NULL)) trick, but it just repeats the same number! I want to keep all the stuff in the dicegen(int) function if possible, and keep it out of the main() function.

A:[C++] Random Number generation problems

You need to use a different seed value each time the function is called or you'll get both dice = the same.
Code:

#include <iostream>
#include <cstdlib>
#include <ctime>

using namespace std;

int dicegen_rolldice(int sides, int i) {
int roll;
int seed = i;
srand(seed);
roll = 1 + (rand()%sides);
return roll;
}

int main() {
cout << "How many dice do you want to roll?" << endl;
int dice;
cin >> dice;
cout << "How many sides do the dice have?" << endl;
int sides;
cin >> sides;
int total = 0;
int roll;
cout << "Rolling " << dice << "d" << sides <<":\t" << endl;
for(int i = 1; i <= dice; i++) {
roll = dicegen_rolldice(sides,i);
cout << roll << "\t";
total += roll;
}
cout << endl << "The total is: " << total << endl << endl;
}

Since the value of i changes each time through the loop, you can use it to seed srand with a different value each time it is called.

There may be more to fix, but that should help.

Also consider that for a die to be 3-dimensional, it needs a minimum of 4 sides.

Hey guys,

After my computer crashed this last weekend, and it wouldn't load Windows successfully no matter what I did, I was forced to clean install Windows XP.

After installing the OS again, I have a number of problems that I will post in this this thread, hoping you guys will check it frequently during this trying time for me. Thanks for any help.

My first problem is the system, even after having all of my old files and programs flushed off after the old partition was reformatted, seems to be buggy. I've noticed that when I use web browsers such as Firefox or IE, they operate very slowly. Particularly when I scroll, either by clicking and holding down the scrollbar or pressing the small arrow at the top or bottom of the bar. Instead of a nice, smooth fluid motion, both browsers scroll very jerky and erratic. The browser scrolls a little bit, stops, the image on the screen "swipes", then scrolls a little bit more, stops, screen swipes, etc. During this time, I had Task Manager open and the CPU usage was logging 100%. Keep in mind I had no other programs open, just Firefox or IE, and when I scroll the page, the CPU usage is 100% and the scroll is very slow and jerky.

Anyone know what is causing this or how to fix this?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sounds to me like you are missing the video drivers

Try this:

Right click MY COMPUTER, left click PROPERTIES
At the top click the HARDWARE tab
Then click DEVICE MANAGER button

If you see any yellow ! 's in the list you have to get the drivers for the hardware. The ! means the drivers for the device is not installed!

I recently reformatted my hard drive because i had never done it and decided i had alot of needless junk on my computer. i rebuilt my computer to fix a problem with the power button (new case is all i needed) and then i reformatted my harddrive. since then, a soft restart will not open windows, nor will a button power on. what i mean is that when i push the button to turn on my computer, my monitor says check source and connection, but when i hit the physical restart button on my case, it restarts, and proceeds as normal. the same scenario occurs when i use the windows "restart" process. secondly, i am using a built in sound card on my abit motherboard. its a realtek AC'97 sound card, and before my rebuilding/reformatting, everything worked top notch. since my rebuild/reformat, my sound is fine, but my microphone will not work. i've checked in control panel and i've tried 2 different microphones on two different headsets. any help anyone could offer would be most appreciated. Thanks!!

I might add that i have windows xp pro sp3 and i have used the cd drivers from my abit motherboard for the realtek sound system. my headsets are logitech and plantronic, and neither work. western digital hard drive should that matter.

Hi Guys,

Looking for a bit of help with a storage problem I am currently having. Im trying to turn an old PC of mine into a media server, and therefore trying to install a couple of 500GB IDE hard drives to it. Because the PC is old (a Compaq Deskpro EN P3 733) I am pretty sure it only supports 28-bit LBA. So, for what I thought was a solution I purchased a PCI IDE Controller Card / RAID Controller (http://www.ite.com.tw/product_info/PC/Brief-IT8212_2.asp), and while the RAID BIOS sees the 500GB drive on startup, it doesnt show up within XP.

I tried hooking up an older 80GB hard drive that I know works with they system (and works when hooked up to the on board IDE controller) and that WAS seen by XP even though the 500gb wasnt.

So the questions:
- Do most PCI IDE controllers have built in 48-bit LBA support, even if the motherboard only supports 28-bit LBA?
- Is there a software workaround for this? A little research turned up this - Intel Application Accelerator - http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/ - which is supposed to offer 48-bit support on a 28-bit. Anyone used it? Is this likely to fix the problem?

And just to throw another variable in there, I am not sure if the drive was formatted correctly as I did it using the 28-bit system - would this make a difference?

Any help would be brilliant - I have been tearing my hair out with this one!

Thanks,
ALEXIS

Hi folks,

I've had a number of problems pop up simultaneously over the past few days. Unsure when it started exactly, but I first noticed it when I tried to log in to MSN. It went through the usual "logging you in" process, but just as the main MSN screen came up, the program just shut down. I tried reinstalling it, but that didn't help. I then noticed that some of my google searches were being redirected to dodgy websites, which made me think I had a virus, so I ran avast! and picked up a few things, which were either deleted or moved to the chest. Only problem is that now I can't use google at all - anytime I try to search for something, nothing happens - the spinning icon to say Firefox is finding the website just spins continuously. Anytime I try to access google I can't access any websites at all, unless I close firefox down and use ctrl-alt-del to end the firefox.exe process, then restart it. Other search engines seem to work fine, only google is giving me grief.

The next odd thing I noticed is that after I restarted my computer, the audio wasn't working. A quick search gave me a solution: Start, Run, type services.msc, find Windows Audio and start it manually. I have to do this everytime I restart my computer now, otherwise I get no audio at all. I'm also now having to start my wireless network manually too after a restart - usually it picks it up automatically, but not any more.

I tried a system restore, but none of the restore... Read more

Hello,

I was asked to look at a friends laptop (NEC iSelect 5210) because it wouldn't start and when it did it switched off again a few seconds later.

I thought the problem might be a dud battery so I removed the battery and connected straight to the mains it worked a little bit better but then switched off again. I thought maybe it was still trying to run of the battery. I left the laptop for the weekend charging. I switched it on Monday morning and it stayed on.

It came up with a error message saying that I had some sort of error with the system, and asked me to perform a sytem recovery. I went ahead with this and half way through it switched off. I kept trying to switch it on and eventually it stayed on and completed the system restore.

It looked to be working ok again, so I thought it might of been a corrupt hard drive. I updated everything and it worked fine. I tried restarting it and it worked. I unplugged the power cable and tried it again and it would only come on again for a few minutes. I thought maybe its a dud battery as well.

Eventually it switched on again I changed the settings so it would run just off the mains, but this didnt work. I also tried wobbling the power supply when it was on to see if this was lose and causing the loss of power, but it wasnt. I read a few other forums and they said to try cleaning the mobo and to blow the dust out from around the hard drive and the RAM.

I carried out these taks and now it still takes ages to switch on... Read more

When you connect to another monitor, are you toggling to the external? There is usually a function key like F4 or whatever to toggle between the screen and an external monitor.

From your post, I would think you have a failing board or pw supply on the board. Since the price of laptops is pretty low now, it is not really cost effective to repair.

Well firstly I'll start by saying: Hiya! To everyone, I am new in this community and hope you guys may be able to help me on an issue I've had..
Back in 2011 I had a desktop PC (an eMachine), Unfortunately it died, I was able to recover the Hard-Drive though, I have a lot of family pics and videos as well music that I DO NOT want to lose, I bought a 3.5 Hard Drive enclosure and installed it.
While I had problems with the ownership of the disk and other type of permission issues (Which isn't a problem anymore, I fixed that) however, Now that I do have access to the hard drive whenever I try to get into a folder or put in a path (Example: F:\Documents and Settings\user ___\) It'll give me a message as: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. (and you know the rest), I tried different types of fixes such as:the fix manager error and other things I actually found on this forum and have had no luck, I need you guys' knowledge, these files are really important for me. I would appreciate it a lot.
Lastly, Thanks so much for taking your time in checking my thread and attempting to help. Much Love fellas.

i got an oddball problem. i have googled and even searched this forum yet i cant come up with a solution. and microsofts site i think i need a degree in to find what i want.

so here goes.

i recently purchased a hp laptop with a vista sp 1 setup, with a 4965agn wireless adapter connected to a linksys wrvs4400n router.

now i get a n connection, the internet works fine, i set the vista box to my xp workgroup (all xp machines run sp3) i have unchcked the ipv6 and even turned the dual stack setting in the router not to assign ipv6 ips.

what happends is i can see the network randomly (list all the pc's on the workgroup) and i can browse 2 of the 3 pc on the lan.

but if i try to copy from 1 pc to another large files about 1 gig at a time, i get an error, and the lan drops. where the vista box will only show the vista pc and the router in networking. after a while the vista box will relist the pc on the lan.

i have set the network to private, network discovery is on, file sharing is on, printer sharing is on.

i have turned off both xp's and vista's firewall's and vista's uac both have no effect on this.

if any more info is needed let me know i can add to it, from reading posts nbtstats and ipconfig /all i'm going to add this in a few minutes as soon as i get the laptop booted up.

when this does occur tho, i never loose internet.

edit added vista's info.

I am running a Media Server via my Cisco Linksys E3000 router using an attached USB hard drive. This device uses PVConnect UPnP. When I connect to this Media Server using my Sony Bravia KDL40Z5100, only the photos with resolution less than 720 are available. Similarly, folders containing only jpegs of higher resolution return "There are no items to display". However, when I use Windows Media Player to connect to this UPnP, I can see and access all my jpg photos of any resolution, so I know the media server is working fine.
Anyone have any ideas?

I'm having the same issue with my Bravia KDL-46EX701 TV and E3000. Based on the following post regarding a similar issue with an HP server using PVConnect UPnP, the problem appears to be in the router firmware:

According to ASUS that board "Supports CPU up to 140 W"
https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards...pecifications/
The CPU you are using is a 220W edition.
The VRM of that board will heat up quickly under load and if pushed can burn out.
Clear the CMOS and leave the board running at stock clocks, I would also try reverting to an earlier Graphics driver and see if that helps.

Basically each morning I import data from an internet database to excel.
I need to divide the number of rows, that i receive daily in this excel document, to 4 worksheets designated to 4 staff members.
Each staff member needs to receive an equal amount of rows.

For e.g. if today i received 124 rows of data then each staff member should get 31 rows each.
Except the number of rows will vary on each day. I could get 200 plus rows of data.

Can someone please assist with writing a macro to divide up the rows in to the 4 worksheets? I would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance

I have attached the sample file for viewing....the data starts from row 3...thanks

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

Well you probably pulled some icon cache files off that were infected but also had the L and XL icons. If sfc didnt work you could try a repair install. It will re-install only the files with different hash marks.

Make a backup and restore point first just in case

When viewing large and extra large photo previews, the jpeg thumbnails will not load. Is this a 64 bit issue?

Any Ideas?

A:Large, Extra Large Icons won't load

I can tell you it's not a 64 bit issue as I do not have this problem.
Beyond that, I'll have to defer to another with more expertise in this matter.

If you extract the icons from imageres.dll or shell32.dll then the maximum icon size is about 64x64 and 32x32 for most icons. I am trying to extract the largest icons, where can I get them. or am I just doing it wrong?

My computer, which is running Windows XP, got infected with the Google redirect virus. In the Task Manager, there is an unknown process 2212512753:247209852.exe, which I cannot stop.

I am using the McAfee anti-virus program. When I turn on real-time scanning, it immediately turns off again. When I try a quick scan, I get a message saying "An Error Has Occurred".

When I try running a quick scan in Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, it runs for a few seconds, then quits. I tried other options, including running it under a different name.

Recently, I have been unable to access the Internet, although my wireless connection still seems to be working. I have been using another computer and a flash drive to transfer files.

The GMER program ran for a couple of minutes, then quit.

The dds.txt file contains the following:

Hello, I'm new here and I made a thread here
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...ng-492556.html

I was then told to come here and after reading the "first steps" I've downloaded and ran the DDS and have saved the dds.txt and attach.txt

I tried running GMER after but every single time I start up GMER it scans for a little then crashes and I get the typical windows send error report message because the program had to quit for some reason. Here is my DDS file anyway.

A:Severe number of problems need help fixing and GMER doesn't work

Hello and welcome to TSF.

System is infected for sure. We need to get a log from GMER. Let's try this special version:

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you still have trouble, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

If you still have difficullty, run the scan with ONLY the Sections and C drive ... Read more

I have this problem but with only 1 contact. The error message is:
"This message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail (SMTP) server. For Help go to Help etc. etc. etc."
One of my attempts finally got through and my contact replied:

"I have changed my address to [email protected] I Am keeping this one open for now but will close it soon."

I have attempted numerous times to send to both old and new addresses but still just keep getting the same error message....0x800CCC79.

I hope that someone can provide a solution?

A:Problems sending out mails with Windows Mail: Error Number: 0x800C

If it is just one address, the problem is probably not at your end. Your email is being rejected by your contacts email.

If your contact has two addy with the same ISP, probably your address is being rejected because your ISP or email provider is known to send spam etc.

I am running Windows 10 Home (Version 1511) which is running great, but have left my computer off so far to avoid downloading the new AU release (ver 1607) because of the known problems.
Would like to know if a later *** Update has been released to correct the problems, and if so what is the windows update number of that release.
Thank you
