Can't Set Ie6 As Default Browser Even After Clean Install

Q: Can't Set Ie6 As Default Browser Even After Clean Install

I have posted this in several other forums and newsgroups during the past week. So far, no one had been able to solve it...

I removed "Spy Sheriff" from my AMD64 system. Everything worked after cleaning but XP SP2 was buggy. Internet Explorer also stopped asking to be the default browser (both Firefox 1.5.01 and IE6 were installed). I tried everything to remedy this but nothing worked.

A number of options also appear to be missing from my BIOS setup that used to be there, including the "Built-in Virus protection".

I reinstalled XP Home SP2 and both browsers but the problems described above remain. Could malware have damaged my BIOS? (my apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.)

A: Can't Set Ie6 As Default Browser Even After Clean Install

The problem probably resides in your registry, not your bios.

What steps have you taken to repair Internet Explorer?

Go to the control panel and click on "Internet Options",

Click the "programs" tab,

Check the box that says "Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser".

Click "apply", click "OK".

What other problems are you experiencing?

Hi all,

Had to format my sisters computer and reinstall XP. It all went fine but now, when in a browser (tried IE and FF), the scrolling is really laggy as in the page does this kind of re-painting effect.

I've spent all day trawling the net and trying solutions. I've updated the video driver (Intel GMA 900 - old system I know), I've tried disabling the firewall and switching smooth scrolling on and then off again.

Also having problem with no sound because of no sound driver. I know the problem here is finding the original install disc with the drivers, but I think that disc may be long gone, so was hoping there was another way to find out what soundcard it is and/or how to update it. Could the original disc also fix my first issue?

Thanks for reading, looking forward to some solutions :)

I just performed a clean install of Windows 8 and, immediately after logging in for the first time, I opened Internet Explore to see my default homepage was http://www.arccosine.com. I believe this software may be responsible for another problem I'm having - Windows updates refuse to install; the progress bar moves but the percentage done remains at 0. I've tried repairing windows update in the System and Security Troubleshooting bit which appeared to work at first - it said problems had been fixed, but the updates still refuse to download.

I've had arccosine hijack my browser before after installing xppaint and forgetting to opt out of installing it. How is it possible that this is present after formating my system disk? I have other, non-system disks which I guess must be the source of the problem. I'm running a full scan on Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool as I type but it's going to take a while to finish scanning like 4TB of files.

Specs:
CPU - AMD FX-8150
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD7970 3GB
PSU - Corsair TX650V2 Enthusiast Series 650W TX ATX/EPS 80 PLUS Bronze
Motherboard - AsRock 970 Extreme3
System disk - 2x Samsung 840 Series 250GB SATA SSD
Storage disks - 2x Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
Optical disk - LG BH16NS40 BDRW
WiFi - Edimax EW-7728In
RAM - 2x AMD 4GB DDR3 1600 CL8 Performance Edition Memory

Thank you.

If you restored any of your old files after the clean install, you probably reinstalled the virus as well.
Download and run ADWcleaner. this will remove all browser redirects and unwanted toolbars. Then click on the link in my signature for Virus/Malware Help and post in that section of the forum.

So yesterday automatic Windows update installed IE10, today I noticed that links in certain applications open in IE10 instead of my configured default browser, which every link from this or any other application used to open in before that update and the reboot that followed the update.
I checked the Default Programs section in the system control panel, expecting maybe Microsoft wanted to get themselves in any more trouble with the EU and changing the default to IE. This was not the case however, all the associations were still pointing to the configured default browser, I noticed however I could not uncheck the defaults already set.
So despite the obvious configuration being correct, links would still open in IE10 even after yet another reboot.
I went ahead and checked the registry associations, and found that http(s) protocol as well as htm(l) filetypes were associated with Internet Explorer with various EditFlags set (presumably to prevent changing them through the user interface, or to ignore the user interface settings).

Seriously Microsoft? Don't you have enough trouble yet?

Hi there and thanks for your time. I had a small search and im sure its on here but cant see a solution.

Ive just done a clean install of XP. Ive installed the drivers and software for the wifi card. (netgear wg511v2). Also i have connected to the wireless router and have established a 48 mbps wifi signal.

The Wireless network connection status box in XP is also connecting at 48 mbps and showing signal. All be it a low one.it says in the bottom right of the taskbar over a commuter with a yellow ! triangle "Limited or low connectivity"

The problem is when i launch internet explorer " page cannot be displayed "
When i type google.com in the address bar i get in a box with a red x circled "internet explorer could not open the search page"

In network connections when i view available wireless networks i get the wireless connection box, with the message "windows cannot configure this wireless connection" and below it " If you have enabled another program to configure this connection then use that software "

Any help would be most appreciated. It could be a conflict with the card software and xp or ive just not set up the network in xp right but these are just guesses but in all honesty im just not sure at the mo.

Thank in advance R

So in IE, firefox, and chrome, all google links get redirected. when you hover over the search results, the URL that displays at the bottom of your browser window does not match the url of the search result. specifically, a prefix is added that looks something like this: hxxp://6ar1.google.com/(then some garbage)/http://(url of search result). When you click on the link, it opens up a new browser window that takes you to different ads, or sometimes back to google.com.
ipconfig /flushdns, netsh int ip reset, Combofix, Hitman Pro, AVG, MS Security Essentials, hijack this, malwarebytes are all of the tools I've tried using to find and extinguish this virus. None of these tools found anything suspicious on the system. I eventually formatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP, which did not work either. I also rebuilt the master boot record and rewrote the partition table using the XP installation disk and testdisk. This did not help either. I booted up to Parted Magic, opened up the partition editor (Gparted), and noticed there was a little bit of space after the main partition that was unallocated. I resized the main partition to make use of this unallocated space. after I restarted the system, no more browser redirects! I brought the pc back to the owner, and it worked fine for one entire day. but now its back! could it be in the router , or might someone be specifically targeting my client?

Could use some help on how to allow a user to set their default browser permanently even with IE11 being set via Group Policy as the usual default.

For logistical reasons, we are still on IE11 instead of using Edge for our default browser - mostly because our software hasn't been 100% tested with Edge and to avoid overall confusion in having made the jump as a company to Windows 10 recently.

I successfully created a default configuration associations .xml file and it is pushing IE11 as the default.

However, knowing we have some users who would like to use a browser other than IE11 and let it be their default, we're trying to accommodate them while still enforcing the policy in place. Additionally, we don't want to 100% dissuade users from
utilizing Edge, so we haven't tried removing it from public visibility within the OS.  The users in question are local admins on their machines and should, in theory, be allowed that capability.

Any suggestions?

Hello, B.C.

My english is not 100% perfect, so I apologize.

After looking at how many problems were solved here I wanted to show mine, since yesterday, while not browsing or playing a fullscreen game, my default browser randomly opens, if I am playing a game, it minimizes it which makes it unplayable. And when I am browsing, no matter what browser is, my current tab switch to the browser home page, for example, In opera my home page is the speed dial, while browsing on a website e.j. wikipedia or any other, it changes to the browser home page for no reason, and that happens in all browsers, no matter what the default one is.

I do believe this is caused by a malware. I scanned my computer with both avast! Free Antivirus and Windows Defender and found nothing. I deleted opera and made firefox my default browser, it randomly opened constantly as it did with opera. I restored my system to 04/12/12 and the problem was still present (I also rebooted many times), however, as I deleted opera when restoring my system it was still there as my default browser but, when whatever was causing the problem attempted to launch it, it popped up a window telling that the launcher file could not be run, and so that window popped up randomly and it was actually the same thing, as when I deleted the launcher file, it stopped popping up the window (and a browser, because I had no default browser). I recommend imaging the windows 7 system using acronis or some other imaging software. Then doing the upgrade activating then reverting back to the image.

Lets say you already wiped it out and did a clean install. there is no way that I no to go back to windows 7 without a windows 7 key. There are downgrade right but they still require a key (I know it's stupid).

Recently installed the latest version of Avant browser. I have set it not to be my default browser or to check if it is default on start up. I have Firefox set as my default browser and to check if it is on start up. The problem is every time I launch Avant and use it it makes itself the default browser. I know this because when I launch Firefox it says it's not the default and also if I wan to set it as the default. I do and when I use Avant again it steals the default browser setting again. I asked about this on the Avant forum and nobody has a solution. Most people on the Avant forum use that browser as their default so they don't care if it makes itself default. Any suggestions on how to stop this? I find this behaviour from a browser to be malware like.

Due to some corruptions in files system that can't be repair. I decide to do a clean install of vista from recovery partition preinstalled in D drive.

My question is does the clean install also clean out any hidden/unactive virus/rootkit if i format the laptop to its factory condition?

I have tried various AV software on this old laptop but the results come out clean but I still suspect there're some remain hidden as the system is slowly corrupted.

A:Clean install vista from recovery partition in D drive also clean virus?

Hi,

The answer is yes it will, if you do a destructive install (Format "C") & it has not infected any other drives.

So, what drives do you have on your system? "C" (System) & "D" (Recovery) plus DVD/CD drives.

Do you have anything else? USB plug in hard drives or USB memory sticks etc. etc.

Hi BC,
Couple months ago I spent some time in your malware forums trying to resolve issues with a constantly running Windows 7 media center which I noticed was running - not my - porn and bitcoins through. The issue progressed, solutions did not, files got locked, online access became scarce, and as I couldnt keep in timely contact with your well-intentioned helpers here, my thread was closed. To not be a burden on volunteer time, I left the idea of one on one help behind and sought additional insight on my own.
4 months after first noticing an issue, I have my same refurbished HP notebook with no accessible OS, no way to install one from disk, no income, and no hope.
I do have 12 weeks of notes from the most tenacious remote hack I believe exists. It has swallowed my entire home network and every machine in it, even those not configured for online access.
To start, I just want to get an OS on my laptop. I've long since kissed my data goodbye. I ran killdisk multiple times - the last time took 6 days - but I still have an X drive with a registry, command prompt, notepad, you name it, on my machine. I just dont have normal access to "windows"... all these individual programs I can access through command prompt.
Today I'm looking at a new security log called "backup" that starts, "administrative privileged user logged on. Parsing template defltwk.inf. Configuration engine was initialized successfully..."

Hi Folks,

I just did a clean install of Win7 and must have done something wrong. I found a file called Windows.old.

I would like to wipe my hard drive completely clean and then install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.

How do I accomplish this task? It's a good time to start over because I'm just at the stage of adding the security software. Already did the drivers but don't mind doing those over again.

I have a Dell 5150, Pentium D820, Dual Core 2.8 GHz with 3 GBs memory.

A:Clean Install of Win7 - Wipe Hard Drive Clean

Do you a regular Windows 7 installation disk, with Product Key?

If so, boot from that disk by setting your DVD drive as the first boot device in the BIOS or by choosing the DVD drive from a menu. Do you know how to do that?

Midway in the installation process you will come to a screen that asks where you want to install Windows. Look for "drive options, advanced" or something very close to that. Take that choice.

At the next screen, all of your partitions will be shown. Delete them all.

That will leave you with nothing but "unallocated space".

When you install to the unallocated space, it will be automatically formatted by Windows and you should end up with a very small "System Reserved" partition and a large C partition covering the rest of the drive.

Back up your data before beginning.

Windows.old is your old installation. If you proceed as above, you won't get it.

With 3 GB of RAM, you should probably go with 32-bit.

My desktop URL link is unable to access the Web based Admin console of my Netgear Router,
and various application "F1 / Help" buttons no longer give help when they need internet resources.

Previously I started with a conventional installed Firefox Browser,
but after erratic premature update releases chose the more stable Palemoon,
and placed the Portable variant on my secondary HDD because I dislike the junk that Mozilla browsers place on my system drive.
Everything worked perfectly.
I never recognized that once or twice a month only Firefox COULD meet a "Default Browser" requirement

With a brand new install of Windows on a new SSD,
and Palemoon continuing to work perfectly on original secondary HDD,
I thought all was well.
Now I know better.

My old desktop URL link to the Router was simply
http://192.168.2.1
I have now replaced that with a desktop shortcut to Palemoon plus argument
E:\Portable\PaleMoon\Palemoon-Portable.exe http://192.168.2.1
I may in future find more URL links that need replacing.

To access help on my applications I now have to firstly locate and secondly download relevant resources that I can quickly link to.

If I really have to then I will use a standard non-portable version of Palemoon,
But I am hoping for a clever trick that would make Windows use the Portable version as my Default Browser.

Regards
Alan

hello
I had many problems with BSOD crashes, and decided to make a new clean install (SSD or harddisk).
If I make a new clean install (no upgrade) is it enough to create 1 continuous unallocated disk and then it will make a clean install
Or do I have to "clean up" my old disk first before making a clean install?

A:Clean disk before clean install?

You can delete all of the partitions on the disk that you're installing Windows to. The installer will automatically create the partitions that it needs (2 for an MBR disk, 3 for GPT), and format them. It takes very little time, at least on an SSD.

Originally I set it to install and walked away came back hours later so I wasn't at the pc watching things. Anyways I managed to damage some files or something and for whatever reasons i could not figure out how to repair them. The microsoft forum was a bust no even one person tried to help me so I got sick of waiting and deleted the partition on the drive and made a new one and formatted it within the installer loaded from boot of the vista CD. That part went fine and quick. However when arriving at the step where its expanding files it took almost an hour before it spun up the CD and began increasing beyond 0%. From there up to 5% at best increases (avg 3%) then the CD spins down and idles for at least several minutes and then spins up gets a little farther and repeat. Basically the amount of time its just sitting there is probably 20 times or more longer than the time its actually progressing. Why is this? Is it supposed to do that? It seems odd to me that it wouldn't just keep spinning the CD and continuously progressing. Especially on a system with a dual core 3.2 ghz and 2GB of ram installs should zip through no time at all. I'm sure the install will be done before anyone replies but i thought I would check here in case its something I should be concerned about as a possible problem with my system.

Hi
I have looked through solutions for this issue, but the suggestions don't seem to fix my issue...

I am running Windows 7 SP1 Pro 64-bit on a Dell Optiplex 760, and try to do a clean install of Windows 10, using the ISO file which I downloaded from Microsoft & burnt on to a DVD, and instructions from the tutorial on here, which are very good. I downloaded the correct 64-bit version.

I boot from the DVD, enter my region (UK), and choose custom install, and then my hard drive does not show up on the list of where you would like to install. I have all my USB's unplugged (except keyboard/mouse).

I tried deleting my partions using MiniTool Partition Wizard (bootable DVD), so that the entire disk is unallocated. That didn't fix it. I also tried creating a new partition (NTFS) of the entire drive (to get one Primary NTFS partition). That didn't work. I also tried setting that partition as 'active'. The same.

Before formatting etc, I tried a boot from the Windows 7 install DVD, and the hard drive does show up, unlike the Windows 10 DVD.

Do you think it's an issue with the Windows 10 installer?

I downloaded another version of Win10 from the MS Tech Bench page, but same issue.

After formatting etc, during the Windows 10 boot, I tried another suggestion to open up Command Prompt (Shift + F10), and ran 'diskpart' - and no drives are found. I checked the Bios, and it was there.

So presumably that is the issue. If i ran 'diskpart' with my prior Windows 7 install, diskpart sh... Read more

A:Windows 10 clean install - hard drive doesn't show up before install

Welcome toTenforums, Simon.

I am a little concerned that the Windows 10 setup program on DVD does not have drivers to properly see and interrogate the system on your PC so that the hard drive is visible. It's the second similar case on this forum that I've seen recently. You also seem to be trying to clean install on an empty PC - is this correct, because if you do so It will not activate.

After much to-ing and fro-ing, it was finally possible to *copy the Sources folder from the setup ISO file onto a partition on the hard drive, and run the setup from there, where it wasn't possible to boot from the DVD, even though it worked elsewhere.

If you still have Windows 7 installed (and you should do for Windows 10 activation purposes - if just to obtain a genuine ticket for digital entitlement), and you have the ISO download available, the solution is fairly simple. If you haven't you will need the Windows 7 key to activate the install.

You seem pretty PC savvy so, I'd ask you to follow the bolded instructions from the * in the 5th para above.

Hi,

I recently did a clean install of Vista Home Premium x32 and upon completion am unable to connect to the internet. I received the following error: "windows unable to install ethernet controller." Upon accessing Device Manager, I noticed yellow exclamation marks associated with my network controller. I have an Acer Aspire 5536-5224 notebook. Windows could not locate the drivers on the machine and I cannot connect to locate. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure where to begin searching for the driver! Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey guys!

I have a new ASUS ROG G751JT-DH72 laptop, and I have been trying to install Windows 10 and Ubuntu on it. It came with Windows 8.1, so I upgraded to 10, then did a clean install of 10. Version was Home 64 bit.

That went reasonably well: only thing after the clean re-install was that on boot, the screen did nothing but flash on and off. I found out that I could get it unstuck by mashing F12, and that disabling fast boot fixes the problem permanently. My cleanly installed fresh Windows 10 worked perfectly.

I then installed Ubuntu 15.04 in the small space that I had left for it on the SSD, and gave it the whole 1 TB drive for my "home" folder.

Afterwards, Windows was gone. Mind you, the bootloader still showed up in the Grub menu, but when I tried to launch it, it told me something was wrong and I had to recover it. I tried, but couldn't: bootrec /scanos told me it found no Windows installations.

So I figured: second attempt! I rebooted using the Windows 10 DVD, and during parititioning nuked everything and created new partitions from scratch.

About 90% through the "Getting files ready" part, it failed. Error:

"Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x8007025D"

I see some people here had the same thing, but not on laptops as far as I can tell. Anybody out there who has any idea how to fix this? I tried:

I would like to install Vista Home Premium 64-bit on my home computer. I currently have Media Center Edition 2005 installed, but want to start from scratch (i.e., NOT upgrade) and install the 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium. I have two questions:

(1) If I buy the retail boxed version of Vista Home Premium, will it contain the 64-bit version in addition to the 32-bit version?

(2) When I pop the DVD into my computer and reboot, what (if anything) do I have to do to get it to install the 64-bit version? Will I be prompted to choose?

Any guidance or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

A:Vista Home Premium Clean install - what do I need to install 64 bit version?

Oh great. I can answer this question (I think lol). I could not find a retail 64 bit version of Vista Home Premium. I had to buy the Vista Ultimate. I originally bought an OEM version of the 64 bit Home premium for $119, (I had all kinds of problems that turned out NOT to be from Vista, but that is another story). I exchanged it for the Ultimate retail version which came with Microsoft support. I have recieved better "support' from this website than the official MS support BTW. Anyways........

The Ultimate version of Vista came with 2 installation discs, one the 32 bit version and one the 64 bit version. I popped the 64 bit version disc in and it installed 64 bit Vista on my computer with no additional prompts. While I was unable to find the 64 bit RETAIL version of Home Premium, I'm sure that if you do, it will only contain the 64 bit version on the disc. While I was kind of hacked off to pay much more for the Ultimate than I was anticipating, I like the additional features. Hope this helps.

Let me start out by saying a clean install is the better way to go; however there may be some instances where a motherboard swap without having to reinstall is preferred. If you are like me and want to avoid all of the custom settings, shared drives, etc; then this option can save a LOT of time.
Recently I did this task on my own network storage system or home server. Some more modern parts became available to me for doing a build. Not only was the motherboard swapped, the system drive was cloned from an ide drive to a more modern sata drive. Here is how you go about swapping boards without a clean install.
This will work on both sata and ide type drives however if you have sata and the sata controller mode is set to AHCI or Raid, you may have problems. If your sata controller mode is set to ahci, you can attempt to swap to native ide in the system bios before beginning this task. If it boots using native ide, then you should be able to do the swap. If it does not boot when changing the controller mode, then you are out of luck.
The old motherboard was a NForce4 with a single core AMD FX-55. The new board was an Epox 945 intel chipset with a Pentium D 940. It does not get much more different than those two chipsets/cpus.

With the old board still installed, do the following. During this procedure, DO NOT reboot. Tell the system later for the reboot.
1 Uninstall any software that is dependent on the old board. This would be things like onboard sound driver, onboard nic driver,... Read more

This is what is happening. A friend gave me his DELL Inspririon 531 2007 Desktop. It has a pirated copy of 7 ultimate x64 (which I am not sure if this supports 64 bit). Prior to looking into how old the machine was, I was able to install 8.1 64 bit. But it wouldn't allow me to install any drivers from the DELL site. Said that the machine wasn't compatible. So, I tried with Windows 7 32 bit and I am getting this error. I have deleted all partitions, but now, I do not have that option when I choose Custom-advanced. There is no Delete option.

A few times I got the error at 5% other times at over 60%. What can I do to get this to install? It is a legit DVD of windows. Why would it have allowed 8.1 to successfully install now it is doing this? What files are missing? I have tried both deleting the partitions and not deleting. Same result.

I have been experiencing a really aggravating problem with one of my
computer that I can't sort out. Perhaps you might know of a
solution.... A few weeks back my system crashed, the apparent result
of some registry changes that messed with some critical startup items.
I figured that the easiest thing to do was a clean install, given
that nothing particularly important was on the disk, and the files
that were, I easily got off by setting the drive up as an external
disk. When I went to do the install the XP installer doesn't see any
partitions on the disk. On the screen where you can choose to delete a partition or install a system on an existing one, there is just a list that keeps repeating [drive not recognized] or something along those lines. At first I figured that this was just an issue with the existing problems on the drive, so I wiped it completely clean and reformatted it. When I went back to install
again the same thing happened. Not only does the installer not
recognize the partition, but I get the blue screen of death if I try
to navigate through my options on the installer screen. I hooked up
another disk I had sitting around, and the same thing happens. I
really don't know what to do...installing a new system has always been
that easy way out of a problem, but it seems like I am up a creek here. Have
anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

A:Major issue with XP install...BSOD while trying to do clean install

Hi chodeburn

Sorry for the delay in getting a reply to you (been on vacation).

Try using the diagnostic tools for your hard drive to "zero-write" the drive: if anything is wrong with the drive, the utility will provide an error number. If the zero-write finishes successfully, it usually re-certifies the drive as error-free --- http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

If a 'drive-overlay' was used to help an older motherboard 'see' the total capacity of the drive, check with the motherboard manufacturer's website to see if a Bios update is available (for example, one with 48bit LBA support, to recognize large hard drives greater than 137gb). That is a better solution than a drive overlay.

Windows XP prior to SP1 did not have built-in support for drives larger than 137gb. If necessary, slip-stream your XP CD with SP2, to make for a smoother installation --- http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp

If the drive is a SATA type drive, don't forget - especially with the earlier versions of XP, to provide your SATA driver via floppy diskette by pressing the F6 key when prompted early in the installaton procedure.

And check that your Bios settings correct, and the timings at stock speeds, before installing. [... and stay disconnected from any networks, wired or wireless, disconnect printers, cameras, webcams, scanners, multifunction devices, PDAs, memory card readers, etc. -- until the installation is finished]

Best of luck

Shouldn't be a problem. You should be able to delete the partition that windows resides on, create a new partition, then load Windows 7 in the newly partitioned space.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop, seen a few models I like and they all come with windows 7 pre-installed. Problem is they all also come with a dozen or so pre-installed pieces of freeware/shareware/trial software that I have no use for and don't want and I would like to do a clean install of windows 7 when I buy to get rid of all these. How should I go about doing this?

I'll ask the vendors if they could provide me with some sort of recovery CD that will install the operating system and none of the junk but they might say no (I've done a bit of googling and have read they make money off including all these programmes). If they don't give me anything then could I get by with just purchasing an upgrade DVD even though I obviously won't be upgrading anything, just trying to go from bloated windows 7 to non-bloated version.

Thanks for help.

Hello Third Man, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can just uninstall the bloatware software that comes with the computer in "Programs and Features" in the Control Panel just like in Vista below. Otherwise you would have to purchase a separate retail copy of Windows 7 to do a clean install with, then install all of your drivers.

and used the W7 86x version on my USB key. It seems to load fine, but the result is still: "No Drives Found"

I don't know where else to look for the appropriate drivers. Seagate does not provide any and there are no other drivers on the HP website.

I managed to flash the BIOS with a new version just before my old HDD crashed (it was on the fritz so I managed to back up my data on a USB)

If your system was infected when the image file was made, then a restoration from that image file will result in an infected system.

Re-installs from images are theoretically as good as a clean install. But they don't always restore perfectly. They aren't fool-proof. If you do restore an image and later have problems, you will always ask yourself "Gee, I wonder if I would be having these problems if I had done a clean install".

Images just save you time. If the time saved means nothing to you and you are the slightest bit concerned, just do a clean install and avoid the worry.

Hi all,

The last time I installed everything fresh, I had no issues. Between then and now, there have been no hardware changes on my system, but now I am having issues installing the IDT Codecs.

I keep getting an error along the following lines:

Quote:
ExitError: Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again.

Running under compatibility mode, and running drivers from both the motherboard CD and the manufacturer website both have the same effect. The CD, when booted, says "This OS not support!" and only contains 32-bit vista codecs. ECS' website download indicates the IDT drivers as being compatible with Win7. Both do not work. It is almost as if the hardware "disappeared," despite the fact that I was using the drivers quite successfully till just 2 days ago, when the boot sector went kaput.

Windows has installed its own default set, which do nothing to power the 8mm jacks which I use with my speakers, but instead put sound through the HDMI, which is useless because I use a dedicated graphics card. I have tried uninstalling this codec and re-installing IDT, to no effect. Windows replaces with its own default codec.

Not sure what you mean by "log on to the web" but it might be that your ISP requires the use of IE to do the log in. The IE favourites are those you imported, and the Mozilla are those you created/used with FF.

By the way, there is an extension for FF (View in IE) that will allow you to click on a link (or click on a page) and view it usinging IExpress. This would allow you, hopefully, to launch FF and then proceed with your login using IE.

1) Why is Exployer logging off?
2) Why can't I connect with Firefox?
3) Which do feel is better?
4) How do I set up default browser? ( I can't remember how I did it)

Thanks for the help,
Steve

This morning, as part of my maintenance routine, I ran Windows Update and RegCleaner.

Later, when reading E-mail, every link launched IE. I checked FF, Tools, Options, General for default browser and was assured that FF was default.

That was FF 1.5.0.0.11. I downloaded FF 2.0.0.3. Went to Add/Remove to remove FF 1.5. Task Mgr. opened, but nothing there, i.e., nothing running or not running.

Pushed big button on computer to shut down.

How do I stop IE from launching? bob j (DoctorJ)

You can set the default browser and even remove access to IE using "Set Program Access and Defaults". You should be able to find that in your Start Menu or under Add/Remove Programs.

I am having a problem whereby my default browser keeps changing from IE11 back to either Edge or blank. Can someone suggest why this might be happening or what program is causing it to change? I thought it maybe the Windows Auto Update that keep changing but am now not so sure of that since the last recorded update is back on 14th January and my default Browser got changed again last evening.
The only other programs that run regularly are Norton Internet Security and Norton Utilities. However, I have been through the settings of both of those programs and cannot detect anything that would indicate that they change the default Browser.
Also, in IE11 under the advanced tab I have ticked the option the "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser" and yet (a) I do not get a notification and (b) the default browser keeps getting changed.
Note: Please don't offer suggestions on how to set the default browser in Win10 because I am well versed in that operation having already performed it around 400~ times.
Any suggestions would be welcome - have already scanned this and other sites for solutions or those with the same problems but none seem to match my problem.

Hi, just wondering if you've successfully changed any other defaults and if so, is this the only one with which you have problems? There are some lengthy threads where people find their defaults revert to MS after restarting.

Sometimes this is found to be due to old versions of other apparently unrelated programs- example Winzip.
File associations revert to Windows default apps on every boot - Windows 10 Forums
(That's a short thread- there's a much longer one near it)

Hi Guys

I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 and am slowly getting used to the system. I have one problem in that the default browser is Edge 12.1 and it is not compatible with Trusteer Rapport. I have talked to IBM and they say there are no plans to make it compatible.

I have what might be basic questions. I know how to make google chrome my default browser but how to I change it back to Edge in the future when Trusteer becomes available, and how will making Google my default browser interact with Cortana and other Windows 10 functions?

Upon exit of this window the logged on persons web browser default page changes automatically. The sites that the page changes to is either http://www.sicakgece.com/ or http://www.uslanmaz.com/. I have tried Spybot and Ad-aware and continue to have the problem. There must be a file imbedded in my computer someplace. How do I remove it? Hi all

I have a problem with my internet explorer in which osme sites dont work. Have tried numerous posts about it but no one seems to be able to solve the problem!

Therefore, i want to have AOL as my default browser, meanign when i click on links to my inbox on msn for example, or try to sign up with mcafee security center it opens with AOL rather than IE, thus eliminating that annoying "page cannot be displayed" message!!

I have been on the program access and defaults section on my laptop and changed AOL to my default browser, but this seems to have no effect on msn or my mcafee!

Hope someone can help me!

Thanks

A:How can i make AOL my default browser?

There is a long explanation to your problem, to fully describe it. However, so that I don't confuse myself and then spread that to you. I'll make it short. AOL is not a browser. AOL is a service provider that has a "branded" browser included. That being said, the browser with the brand of AOL is in all actuality IE. So when you set AOL as default, you get IE. Hopefully I haven't confused you with that explanation.

Hi. I have a problem that is more irritating than a must fix. I use a dial-up connection and it always loads to IE 7. Is there a way to have my connection load to Firefox? I use Juno as my ISP. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:I want to have Firefox as default browser.

Open Firefox and go to Tools > Options > Main tab. Put a checkmark in 'Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup'.

Then go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab and remove the checkmark from 'Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser'.

This will make Firefox the default browser and prevent IE from trying to take ownership every time it starts.

Hi folks,

Background Reading

I am in need of some help, the company I work for have developed a custom web browser. It will be distributed in schools as part of our “safe surf” initiative. The web browser has a limited interface i.e. no address bar and only points to our website which has a directory of “porn-free” websites, which the student can click on. It does not allow students to type in a URL as that way they can access inappropriate material. All websites are pulled from the SQL database, and each website has a rating from 1 to 10. Each student has a username / password which is stored on the SQL server along with a Rating of 1-10. If a student has a rating of 5 then they can only view websites, which have a rating of 5 and below. To stop users from accessing the web from other software via hyperlinks etc they have been blocked by a software firewall.

The Problem

The student will be browsing the web through our web browser however when it comes to popup windows, or windows open in a new folder, Internet Explorer is currently being forced open, which is no use as it will be blocked via the firewall therefore a “page cannot be displayed” error is shown. The default web browser has to be changed from Internet Explorer to our custom one. I have changed all file associations for .htm / .html etc but no luck. I need a solution that will work across Microsoft Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003. I know this may be impossible but I could really do with some feedback.

Have only just worked out a problem I have had for some time regarding a website not displaying correctly in IE.

www.mandurahhomes.com.au

I have a slideshow on the main page. I have never been able to get this to work in IE 7,8,or 9. Instead of showing the slideshow one image at a time, they line up down the page one after the other. My client, however, sees it working correctly on her computer in IE. For months I have intermittently scoured my computer to see if I had made some change to a setting that was causing this.

Today I tried somethig and it worked. I made IE the default browser and lo and behold the page is working as it should.
My default browser is Firefox. All other browsers when tested show the slideshow as it should be. I of course changed back to Firefox after the test!

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

I'm using a Dell Inspiron mini, running Winxp Service pack 3. I use Avast Antivirus and have been using Malwarebytes since the problem began. I have purchased an external drive and backed up all the files on my computer.

A week or so ago I noticed the following symptoms:

*upon launching Firefox, each time it now tells me Firefox is not my default browser, would I like to change it to Firefox;
*clicking on links (especially from google) redirects me to a variety of websites that I did not click on;
*I have multiple warnings from Malwarebytes telling me that it has blocked access to a potentially malicious site with the following ip addresses:
206.161.121.2
206.161.121.3
206.161.121.4
206.161.121.5
109.206.185.165

Running a full system scan with Avast it tells me "rootkit found MBR-Alurec" but deleting the file and restarting with a fresh scan just brings up the same message.

Malwarebytes scan gave no results.

what other info is needed, and what suggestions do you have?

Hello thefabe,

Usually during installation of the 3rd party party browser (ex: Firefox), you will have the option to make it the default program.

If not, then you can also select it in Default Programs to make it the default browser. The program itself will usually have it's own settings that you can select to make it default as well.

Hope this helps,
