Hey BC community,Note: I have never had a problem like this before, it has just started this week.I play maplestory, and this program detected something wrong with my firewall. So I proceeded to my security settings and attempted to edit my firewall settings: turn it on/off and then this error code popped up:So I tried to edit the other settings and the same error code came up each time. After that came up SEVERAL TIMES, I went to a microsoft and other forums to search for help. They told me to go to this window:And said to go to: Windows firewall and do something with it...but it's not there to do anything to? I really have NO IDEA what to do! It isn't effecting me that much, but when i start my Maplestory file up to reinstall it, it closes and it says this:[04/08 01:54:15] Install Start[04/08 01:54:16] User Temp Directory : C:\Users\Devin\AppData\Local\Temp[04/08 01:54:16] Use CRC : false[04/08 01:54:16] File Name : C:\Users\Devin\Desktop\MSSetupv108.exe[04/08 01:54:16] Game Code : 33563155[04/08 01:54:16] Cannot Regitster Firewall(C:\ProgramData\NexonUS\NGM\NGM.exe,Nexon Game Manager)[04/08 01:54:16] ErrCode : 14000 - 404 - 0[04/08 01:54:17] Install Path : C:\Nexon\MapleStoryI have downloaded microsoft anti virus things and they "cleaned up" my computer, but it still hasn't changed anything. A friend gave me his laptop PC to remove some virus' and any Malware.  Well I think I have all the bad stuff off but I noticed that the firewall wasn't running.  I looked in services to start it but it's not there.  I down loaded Microsoft security essentials but that didn't help.  Have you any ideas?  Is there something I can run to find it? Thanks, klclarkEdit: Moved topic from Firewall Software and Hardware to the more appropriate forum, at the suggestion of staff. ~ Animal

I have used this link Diagnose and fix Windows Firewall service problems automatically and downloaded the fixer. This told me that the problem may be occurring because of a group policy or Norton security firewall program. I do not know how to change either of these. Any sort of help would be much appreciated.

A:Error Code 5. Firewall. Firewall does not start.

Do you have norton security installed?

If so it uses its own firewall, in which case you do not need windows firewall on. You should not run more then one firewall at a time.

A:Windows Firewall error 0x8007042c + error 1068 (manually starting)

Welcome to the WSF, Junyahh!

Please use the following diagnostic tool. It has a powerful detection mechanism, and may help us get to the cause of your issues:

Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool.
Download: Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Download
Select the version that applies to your system.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double-click the downloaded file to run it.

When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
At the program's console, press the Scan button.

When done, the tool produces a log, FRST.txt, in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

Also, use the Farbar Service Scanner
Download: Downloading Farbar Service Scanner

Let's get a view of all services and dependencies scoped by the tool...
Make sure the following options are checked:

Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender

Press: Scan

When done, FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.

Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

Thank you.

Mod Edit: Moved from Win8 to the Am I Infected forum ~~boopmeI randomly decided to look at McAfee and check my settings, etc.  When looking at the main screen, everything states its on and green.  I had the most current definitions loaded.  When I checked my McAfee firewall it stated on.  When I clicked to go into the McAfee firewall, the screen then changed and said it was off.  When clicking the Turn On button, it would immediately shut off.  I searched this issue and the blogs stated to look at the Windows Firewall under Services.  When I checked, it was not there.  I did a Windows Search for it and found it.  When it opens it gives tells me I need to Update the Firewall Settings.  When I click on Use Recommended Settings it gives me an error "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.  Error Code 0x8007042c." I've checked out some of the blog discussions and followed a few thread about creating new register.bat files and running them.  I've also tried merging some .dll files also per the bloggers.  After doing these actions, the Windows Firewall now appears in my Services but when I click to start it I get the error "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall Service on Local Computer.  Error 1068:  The dependency service or group failed to start"

So my laptop has a bunch of problems. It started out as a virus infection then I found out more problems.

First of all, thank you to Broni for directing me to the thread that tells me to run DSS.

I can't run a systems restore. I get the 0x800700B7 error. As well, Systems Restore says that I've never had a Systems Restore done before, which I think is odd, because I recall seeing Systems Restores created last time I checked (maybe a year ago?)

I also can't turn on Windows Firewall. I get the "Windows can't start the Mpssvc" message.

Ok - I'm trying to fix my friends' computer - Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 running Windows 7 32-bit

Windows firewall is off and I need to "Update Firewall Settings". When I click use recommended settings, I get a message that says it "can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424" I get the same thing when I click on "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" and "Restore Defaults"

When I click on "Advanced Settings" I get "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in" followed by it "failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer you are managing. Error code 0x6D9."

I scanned the computer using both Avast and Microsoft Safety Scanner (full scan and took over 2 hours) - no infections or issues found

I installed all Microsoft updates and followed suggested restarts.

I ran Microsoft Fix It and I get a message that the firewall isn't running or stopped and it can't be fixed.

I have gone into services as an administrator to try and start Windows Firewall...it isn't there - not in the list of services (local)

I also used SlimDrivers to update all the drivers on the computer.

What I am not seeing is how to uninstall and reinstall Windows Firewall...any other program or hardware issue, that would seem to be the easiest solution - but I have yet to see how to do that with Windows Firewall.

I even started the computer in safe mode... Read more

Greetings everyone.
One of my refurbished for charity PCs has come back with a problem. Having been normal for months (XP Home, Firefox, OE etc) a broadband connection problem developed, which I fixed. What I can't discover is the root problem of an error message that crops up repeatedly when accessing the Control Panel: An exception occurred while trying to run C:\Windows\System32\firewall.cpl. Everything slows down, Task Manager shows a two second or so flicker but no excessive processor use. System Restore fails to operate - error message after request to reset to an earlier date. Firewall doesn't run.
I have full scanned with Avast, sent some malware to the Chest: scanned fully with Superantispyware, nothing found.I attach a Hijackthis scan file.
Thanks in advance

If I click on advance settings however, it opens the windows firewall with advance security screen and tell me that there was an error with snap-in and gives me the error code 0x6d9.

I have already tried starting the windows firewall service while in administrator mode but it also gives me and error 'service specific error code 5'.

I have run out of ideas.

Hi

im having difficulty trying to configure NIS 2005 firewall. When the firewall is on it blocks all traffic, but i cant configure any programs as i get a scripting error, and when i run a scan to detect programs that use the internet norton does not detect any programs!

went to norton site and found this:

Error: "An error has occurred in the script on this page" when adding a Trusted or Restricted site in Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall

error i am getting:

problem with res://nisplug.dll/homenetworking.htm
there solution is this:

Solution:
This problem has been reported to Symantec Technical Support. At this time, we do not know the exact cause or contributing factors to this problem. We will update this document when new information or a solution is available.
In some cases, uninstalling and reinstalling Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall solves this problem. For detailed instructions on this process, follow the steps listed below

LOL

Now i dont want to reinstall this damn software again as i have done twice already (no offense but pls dont tell me to download free firewall, i know im stupid and should have done that but made the mistake of going out and spending close to $100 on NIS !!)

Anyone who can fix this problem is a guru and knows their s****, and will command my upmost respect!

A:NIS 2005 Firewall error

Hi Karl,

sorry to have to say this to you, but NIS is a pile of PISS. Hope I'm allowed to say that. Nortons only support is a list of manual instructions that like trying to manually remove a virus (ironically enough) and always results in you having to uninstall/reinstall. And that's when you can remove the software - they've even had to develop a tool for that cos it doesnt remove properly.

The software is flaky as hell, far too often do you open it up to check that the signatures are up to date, only to find its been "Tampered" or "There is a problem" which inevitably means another reinstall.

Why exactly do you need a firewall anyway, Are you not behind a router or some sort of firewalling device that could do the job for you? also what OS are you using?

I've installed a VNC client by Jaadu both on my win 7 64 system & my iPhone.

Everything went smoothly until I applied the FreeSSHd encryption program.

When I try to connect with the computer the iphone gets this error:

Connection Error:

connection refused. You may have a firewall blocking access. Please check your connection settings & try again.

Now FreeSSHd has forums, but for some reason I get get past the challenge textbox. I've tried several times with different browers. It just wont let me post a question there.

I've looked in the firewall section in the control panel, but I dont see anything about FreeSSHd to enable?

Any help or ideas?

Thanks.

SSH server is not running

and has a big red X

Where it actually should be running with a green check, but isnt.

Right under neath it there is a "Click here to start" link, but even though I am able to click it, its not activating?

I'm going to assume this is whats holding up the firewall?

My firewall (NIS 2003) has been generating error messages lately, the

“xxx has caused an error in yyy. xxx will now close”

kind of messages.
I just get them once in a while, and the program seems to be working fine in spite of these errors.

But, do the messages mean that the program has somehow gone bad and it’s not protecting me the way it should any more?

I’ve ran several virus, trojan and port scans and they all came clear. I’d hate to have a false sense of security, though. Would it be better to just remove it and reinstall it?

What’s your advice? …..

Thanks!

Hi,

I've installed a program on a WinXP SP2 computer and I need to open a specific port in the firewall to allow the program to work. However, when I go to open/change the firewall settings via Control Panel --> windows firewall and click on it, I get a "firewall has encountered a problem" error (this is not the exact message as the computer is in a foreign language so this was the basic message as told to me by the interpreter). The firewall status is currently "ON" and I have no intentions to turn it off however I really need this port to be opened. Is there anyway I can open a port without going through this method? or does anyone know a possible cause for this?? any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Steve,

First, Windows Firewall is an inbound firewall only. So, if any nasty gets onto your system while the port is open, you won't be notified of any outbound connection attempts on behalf of the nasty.

I would download ZoneAlarm Free or Sygate Personal Firewall (free for personal use at home) and turn off Windows Firewall after installing either of the above. The benefit of doing so will get you outbound notifications and stealth your ports which you can test at http://scan.sygate.com

The most import capabilities of a firewall (there are more) are to:
1) stealth all of your ports
2) notify you to Allow or Deny outbound connection attempts
3) not respond or port forward any i... Read more

After removing malware from my computer, I am unable to start my windows firewall(the malware disabled and broke it, it seems). I get the error code 0x8007042c when trying to start it via Control Panel, and a separate error when trying to start the service via Services; something about not having the dependencies. I have been getting various remote access requests from an IP in netherlands, connected to port 80, and I'm afraid it's a hack attempt. My ESET NOD32 blocks it, but I'm still very cautious, and therefore I've temporarily disconnected my internet. I would really appreciate some help, as I have a VoIP meeting in a couple of days, and will not be able to get to it if I don't solve this issue.

I'm having a problem with getting Windows Firewall/ICS service to start. I keep getting the same error

Error 10050: A socket operation encountered a dead network

I looked it up and found that it could happen because of malware or spyware so I've run malware bytes and superantispyware to the point where they both return with nothing. I've also run avast antivirus to see if that came up with anything and so far I've gotten nowhere.

I've used tdsskiller to take out any rootkits and used winsockfix to try and get it working again and nothing has worked.

I've even reinstalled TCP/IP protocol which was mentioned somewhere.

I'm not sure what else to do.

I can't connect to the internet either via wireless or wired though I can on another computer on the same network.

Are there any other suggestions for me?

thanks

A:Windows Firewall/ICS error

The statement "failure of the network system...the network interface...or the network itself" seems to sum it up .

It's either Windows, the NIC, or thje network and I would go about systematically checking/eliminating each...if I wanted to resolve it.

The fact that other users on the network don't experience problems...saves you the trouble of checking the network. Uninstalling/then reinstalling the NIC gives the best chance of success with that one...since NICs do go bad, I always have a spare that I can use for troubleshooting. If I suspect Windows, I run sfc /scannow and set the network up anew on that system, using the NetworkWizard.

Here we go. Let me describe the background to my problem. Twelve months ago I loaded Nortons Anti-Virus on to my PC (Windows 98). Nine months ago, I upgraded to XP - no problems. About 6 months ago, I loaded Nortons Personal Firewall (NPF) to get rid of those lousy ads - still no sweat. Then I decided to upgrade my motherboard. Since then, NPF has been a problem. Whilst it says it's enabled, when I log on to the Internet, I immediately start getting ads. When I double-click on the NPF icon, I just get a message saying "Your operating system has been upgraded since you installed NPF. You will need to uninstall NPF and then reinstall NPF for proper functionality". I have blindly obeyed this command numerous times and nothing changes. The Symantec website refers to this error message in their troubleshooting section but does not give me any more advice. Can anyone help? It's probably something simple and obvious but it has got me bamboozled.

Hi,

Sygate Personal Firewall has worked fine for me since I downloaded, but recently, its been acting up. When I start up and login, the tray icon for it doesn't show up, and yet, it still runs in the background. Also, no access to the internet is possible, because it seems to be blocking it. And since there is no tray icon, I can't control it.

I've had to reinstall it before, but the problem comes back. This occurs on both my WinXP computer and my other one, the Win98, and both in the exact same way.

I use cable internet, and when Sygate is not running, it works fine, so there is no question of it being my internet connection. I can't use any program to see any site or use any internet-related service. MSN Messenger can't log on, IE doesn't browse, etc.

Help please?

PS. I would've posed this at the Sygate forums, but for some reason, their forum has not sent me my confirmation email yet.

A:Sygate Personal Firewall Error

hehehe maybe sysgate blocked it? just kidding

Why don't you just drop sysgate, and get a better performing firewall? like Zonealarm (my personal favorite) or Black Ice Defender

Also you might want to scan for viruses, because this sounds fairly suspicious

Select the version that applies to your system.
Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click the downloaded file to run it.

The tool makes a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

I recently obtain a Dell D630 laptop from a friend and am having problems turning on the windows firewall. There is Norton anti-virus that has expired (I'm going to renew it). Also it is running on Windows XP sp3.

Basically when I got to windows firewall under the control panel, it says:
Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing (ICS) service?

When I press yes it then says:
Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Sharing (ICS) service.

Any ideas?

I checked to see if it was set as disabled, manual, or automatic startup and it is on automatic.

ping gives error 10050, but no firewall is installed. From a search I have found that error 10050 is also produced when general network failure occurs. On the Win ME computer I can surf the interent, i.e. download webpages. I don't know how efficiently it is downloading these pages.

The wireless signal strength is very good appox 90%.

Where should I start looking for the problem, the windows networking components (or OS in general), TCP/IP, Winsock, the hardware, the configuration settings?

Thanks for any help

ps Computer 3 is also Win ME with a Belkin PCI card, not tested its ability to acccess or ping the Gateway seems to surf the net OK

pps not really bothered about file sharing etc, i.e. as in a normal LAN, just wanted to share a broaband interent connection between 3/4 computers without having one switched on all the time

Good evening, one and all. This is my first thread on BleepingComputer, but I've been aware (and quite fond of) the site for a while now. I got some useful advice back in the day when I had a particularly nasty virus and had no idea what I was doing, though unfortunately it was so out of hand that nothing could save it besides having my uncle wipe the whole thing. I... have encountered another stickler of a virus, though, and instead of hashing it out on my own I finally decided to make a plea for help. Because I seriously have no idea what to do. And for the record, the virus is on an Acer laptop running Windows 7.Alright... so it all started last night when I noticed that my Windows Firewall was down. I don't know how long it had been down, but whatever the case, I tried to turn it back on. It was then that I received "error code 0x8007042c". It offered for me to turn it on manually, which I tried, but with no success. It was around now that AVG notified me of a few viruses. I got rid of them and then updated Malwarebytes and ran a scan. It caught several more, which I deleted. They were of many different breeds, but I was able to delete all of them.So I tried the firewall again. No success. I went online and found this thread:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/error-code-0x80070422-cant-turn-on-firewall/e5ee6823-98f8-4575-a254-00a038b17e34I tried almost everything there, but again... no success. Hi, I run Xp SP2 32bit;
on 12/27/12 i was victim of a virus, removed succesfully. Anyway still remains a problem, Windows firewall won't start up, Windows says that the problem is that Windows Firewall service / ICS is not running, if i try to run it form services.msc receive error message 1068: unable to start service.
I also tried the procedure advised here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074/en-us. But none of these two procedure worked.
BFE service just doesn't appear in the list.
I run FSS diagnostic tool, as advised here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/49542-cant-start-windows-firewall%3B-windows-firewall-service-missing-fix/
and i post here the log: http://wikisend.com/download/605764/FSS.txt .

Help! I cannot turn on my firewall on my Windows XP. When I click try to turn it on, I get the message, "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?"
I clicked "Yes" and I get

"Could not start the Windows Firewall/ Internet Connection Sharing service on Local Computer."
"Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
I have both ipnathlp.dll and ipnat.sys files on my computer.
I already did the sfc /scannow and the cmd=> netsh winsock reset and restarted the computer, but it did not fix it. I've tried the netsh Firewall reset, but no luck.
I've done a full system scan and that did not correct the problem either. I cannot run system restore because it can't restore to any dates.

The prime suspect for anything that turns off the firewall is malware so you need to scan with all your anti-malware utilities as soon as possible.

Recently I upgraded to Microsoft Word 2010. Also, I installed Norton 360 instead of McAfee antivirus. This made it so that every time I tried to run Sylcount Gold IV on my computer, Word files would not interact with sylcount and came up with a read only error.

When I began checking this out, I was told that there was a virus on my computer and that someone had remote accessed my computer. This was from the Norton reps. Also, they told me that the computer thought McAfee firewall was still active on my computer even though I cannot find McAfee anywhere on my computer search.

When I tried to check this, I found that my windows firewall will not go on. Originally, it showed error 0x80070424. After I looked that up, I found that the BFE was not installed. I reinstalled that, now it comes up with error 0x80070424c.

Really losing my mind on this. I need that sylcount program for work, and I have to have a secure computer also. I thought that was what the antivirus program was supposed to do... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Serena

Running XP Professional with SP 3. I have Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition v. 7.60.926 installed with LiveUpdate installed and current (last run early this morning). The last scan was done yesterday. Found 2 instances of the W32Beagle virus and one of guida.swf (in a temp file linked to IE5). Downloaded a virus removal tool for W32Beagle from Symmantec and ran it. The log file created by this was:

Hello everyone,
My firewall doesn't start anymore. The problem started after removing the damn iStartSurf (virus or whatever threat that is). I used adwcleaner_3.310.exe ( What is adwcleaner_3.310.exe ? | System Explorer ) that is the one that, I suppose, really removed the problem and then Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just in case. This last didn't find anything as I was expecting. (these steps are part of a guide for removing iStartSurf)

After rebooting, because adwcleaner finished its task, installing the anti-malware, while scanning with the latter I saw (not sure it wasn't already there since the log in) the control center complaining about the firewall off.
I thought because of the scanning. At the end of the scan I couldn't turn the firewall on anyway.

I have followed a lot of guides and used different "fixing tools"... but nothing.

---------------------
My Configuration:
windows 8.1
Avira antivir
standard windows firewall
removed malwarebytes
removed adwcleaner
------------------------

Error reported:
- If I try to start the firewall from servises.msc it give me the error code 13
- If I try to open the advanced settings of the firewall from the control panel I get the error code 0x6D9
I don't know anymore what to do.
Guys help me, please!

Hey guys. To give you some history, I had a dual boot with Linux. I forgot to change the MRB and after restarting, ended up having to fix that manually.

Then my license for Zone Alarm expired and I don't have the money for that so went with Comodo. I Un-installed Zone Alarm and tried to install Comodo. Then I kept getting an error message: "Error 1601: The Windows Installer Service can't be accessed. This could happen if it is corrupt or wasn't properly installed. Please check your files and try again."

So I checked the file (msiexec.exe), it was there. Went into Regedit and made sure the file path was right. Then I re-registered the file. Still the same error. So I thought perhaps the firewall that I was trying to install was either incompatible or just bad. So I messed with some compatibility options for the program and after no luck with any of them, deleted it.

Then I tried to install Outpost. This time instead of getting a 1601 error, it tells me in can't install the Microsoft C++ visual run-time libraries.

So this is my problem. I CAN un-install stuff. I haven't tried to install anything else just yet, but I CAN'T install any firewalls at the moment.

And before anyone suggests it, yes, I already downloaded and ran Microsofts fix-it tool for installing / un-installing problems. That had no effect at all. I also tried doing the big disk check (5 steps not 3) and got nothing. I ran sfc /scannow. Nothing. And as I said before, I already ran the cmd ... Read more

The error messages usually appear after failed installation of MSI Package or Disabled "Windows Installer" service. Here are some suggestions:
1. Try to re-register related files
a. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.
b. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.
c. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".
d. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

I inadvertantly downloaded what seems to have been malware or the like earlier today - which opened multiple windows, played the star wars theme, warned me I may have a virus, etc. I subsequently powered down immediately, and was ultimately able to run both a malwarebytes and super antispyware scans, which seem to have possibly removed the problem(s) (I can atually open a web browser now without having 20 other windows open automatically).

Problem is, when I went to update the super antispyware database, I got a message that I could not do so because my firewall is blocking it. When I went to open my Windows firewall settings, I got the following error message:

"Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings."

I am wondering if this means I did not actually get rid of all the malware, or if something else altogether is going on. Any thoughts/help much appreciated. Thanks!

When I turn on my computer my network is unable to renew my ip address so i cannot get online on it. When I try to open the firewall from the control panel, it states that the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service is not running would you like to start it?

If I say yes it just fails to start.

If I go control panel->administrative tools->services and try to start it from there i get error 10050: A socket operation encountered a dead network.

I've googled the error and tried to follow some other threads but the solutions do not work. i downloaded a sp3 update. ive tried these commands found in another thread:
Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

These are symptoms that occured due to a xp security 2012 infection but the virus has seemingly been removed after running a bunch of antivirus programs.
Quick question if i just wiped the system installed the xp os again and then added the network would it definitely work? at this point it might be worth it to save the days ive wasted trying to fix it.

When I try to start the Windows Firewall from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Windows Firewall/ICS, I get an Error 2 the System cannot find the specified file (but I don't know which file it is specifying)

I am working on this system for a friend and the Wireless Network shows Connected, but when I open a browser, I get the error Server Not Found - so obviously, it is not connected to the Internet.

Win 7 64 bit.  All updates applied.
Had occasion to check whether a program was set correctly in my McAfee Firewall.  Firewall was shown as running, but when I checked further, the Firewall was starting and then immediately deactivating.  On checking the Windows Firewall it reported the wrong settings were being used and then reported Error n0x80070424.  I ran Spybot and cleaned up what it found.  Also removed and reinstalled McAfee, but problem persists.

So this is what happened: I turned off windows firewall about 2 weeks ago, to allow a program through, but I forgot to turn it back on. One day I was surfing on the internet and all of the sudden my computer got infected, that's when I tried to turn windows firewall back on, but it was too late, I keep getting this message: "windows firewall can't change some of your settings error code 0x8007042c So now I can't change my firewall settings at all.

And not only that, but I can't download anything from the internet ever since my PC got infected. So I borrowed my Brother's PC to download AVAST ANTIVIRUS and ADWARE CLEANER and saved it on a flash drive, so that I can then transfer it to my PC. It successfully removed most viruses to chest and cleaned my PC it seems to be working fine again, but unfortunately, I still can't change Windows firewall settings nor can I download anything from the internet, as soon as I run the download, it loads for a bit then all of the sudden it disapears.

I've tried starting windows firewall again on "SERVICES", but windows firewall is not even on the list, so therefore, I can't start it. I opened the REGEDIT.EXE/ RUN AS ADM. to access the permissions on Firewall policy, Epoch, DHCP configurations, to change them to allow full control for all users, but they were all already in full control. I tried changing the permissions for parameters for DPS, to allow full control for all users, but it w... Read more

Hi guys, been scanning these forums and you all seem like a top bunch, so I come to you in desperation!

For the last few weeks, I have been getting fatal flaws occuring on my system. When I reboot, Microsoft tells me its the result of McAfee firewall.

Now I dont use this anymore, so I went to uninstall it and I get the usual cannot unistall blah blah install.log is corrupt or something.

So anyway I decided to hell with this and scoured the net for programs dedicated to this issue, including the covetted Unlocker. I have tried umpteen programs to no avail, every one of them is telling me that it is unable to help, and every hour or so my system shuts itself down with a fatal error.

The situation is getting concerning since I have a dissertation to write very soon and if im halfway through a chunk of text I'll risk losing it.

Now Im not amazing with PCs as you can probably tell from this post, i dont have all the info at hand since im using a works pc to type this up, so i couldnt tell you the error codes etc etc.

Off the top of your head can anyone suggest a solution. All help and responses would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

A:Serious error caused by McAfee Firewall

Have you tried uninstalling the program in safe mode? You could also try the mcafee uninstaller.

It took me some time to notice this error and other than it being annoying to me it's not really effecting my PC much. The picture below is the error that shows. What I have done...

Tried starting the service manually a number of different ways and the service will seem to start for a moment then stop.
When I go to the Windows Firewall settings an click Use Recommended Settings. It doesn't seem to actually do anything. I'm assuming it tries to start the service and then stops.
There are no types of viruses, root-kits, malware, etc on the PC.
Ran the SFC with no issues.

What I think happened is that I had Bitdefender Total Security on my system. I decided I didn't want to renew so I uninstalled it, but instead of using their uninstaller I used Revo Uninstall Pro to do it because I always trace any programs I install with it. I think I may have gotten to click happy and maybe fudged something up Windows uses for its firewall. But the issue could of always been there I just never noticed because I used Bitdefender's firewall.

Can anyone assist?

A:0x6D9 Windows Firewall error

Sure. Download the .bat file I attached and run it as Administratior.

After if finishes running open the run box (windows key +r) and type "services.msc" hit ok.

Find Windows Firewall in the list right click on it and chose properies and make sure the startup type is automatic. If it's stopped then click start and then ok.

Now from the run box type "msconfig" under the services tab find Windows Firewall make sure it's checked then click apply and ok and exit without a restart.

Now Windows firewall should be in working order.

PS. It has been like this for a year.

A:I can't use my Windows firewall, because of the error 0x8007042c

A whole year? Wow.

First thing I'd do is run a full anti-malware scan with free Malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

I'd next run a System File Checker scan to make sure you don't have any damaged or corrupt system files. Run teh scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If any problems are found, run the scan three times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

See if the firewall can be used. If not, try Methods 2 and 3 in this Microsoft article.

Please post back if any of this helped or not.

Recently I have decided to check up on my firewall and I noticed an error message 0x80070424 if I try to start it. I have run malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essential scans and there were no signs of any viruses. I have no idea when this happened, but any information on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated. In the attachment I uploaded is what the error message looks like.

A:Windows 7 Firewall Error 0x80070424

You should only run one anti-virus per a computer.

Uninstall Malwarebytes and keep the Microsoft Security Essentials installed, as two AV programs can cause conflicts and problems between each other.

Hello Forum,This is my first post for help and have tried to follow the guides in posting. Hope I have achieved that by sticking to one problem, one post and omitting my two months of virus troubles! Please let me know if anyone needs this info, as I'm pretty sure that it is relevant to this specific problem. Thanks in advance. Details of problem are below:Windows XP Professional SP3Wireless RouterError when trying to initialize windows firewall:Windows firewall settings can not be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?Yes/No? - Yes clicked and error received:Windows can not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.I have scanned PC with SuperAntiSpayware with default settings and result is clean. However, there is a problem which I presume is related:SuperAntiSpayware Update error:There was an error trying to receive definitions. Make sure your firewall is not blocking SuperAntispyware.exe from accessing the Internet.MBAM updates successfully. But, installed the Secunia Personal Software Inspector as suggested on this forum. When I started the programme I get an error that the application could not connect to the HTTPS server. It asked me to check that I could connect through browser and retry - confirmed connection through browser but software connection still failed. Thus, I uninstalled it.

Try this:

How to reset Windows Firewall settings in Windows XP SP2

Go to the following link and download the sharedaccess.reg file and save it to your desktop:

Use Internet Explorer to download this file DO NOT USE Firefox or other browsers

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/sharedaccess.reg

Then double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry. The Services entry will be created. Restart Windows
After restarting Windows, click Start – Run and type in cmd.exe. At the command prompt type the following, being careful to include the spaces:

Hi, just a small question here. I've just got rid of ZoneAlarm because of the problem it created with Add/Remove programs on my computer. I installed Kerio Personal Firewall instead. But everytime I log off my account or shut down the computer, an error message appears. It was too fast (just for half a second) that I cannot read it, but something like "the program failed to initalize because windows is shutting down". Actually, this is not even a problem since everything is perfectly fine. But I wonder why that happens and what I can do to get rid of it.

A:kerio firewall error message

Ok, so whats happening is that you are getting the error message: The application failed to intialize because the Window station is shutting down.

Why??

Kerio Firewall is not shutting down, or attempting to run at shutdown...

Solution:

Look in options in the settting if Kerio Firewall, and disable everything, and slowly re enable one thing at a time, and shutdown after one is disabled. Reboot, and enable another one and shut down, etc, etc./...

I get the firewall Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running error. I reset the winsock, search with Spybot and destroy, and check in Control Panel that the settings are set to automatic, then restart, and it works. But after a short while, it just ceases to work.

Also, from time to time I get the wireless error: Windows cannot configure this wireless connection, if you have enabled another program to use this... It is fixed by switching off and on the router, but is there an easier fix?

Each time I restart my laptop, I get the no active mixer devices and the audio doesn't work, and then I have to reinstall the Realtek AC97 audio drivers. Then it works, but after a restart, it's back to the same, with no audio.

A:Firewall/Wireless/Audio error

I assume for the first issue you are following the instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350 ?

In each of your three problem area a Service is failing to start or failing to keep running:

1. The Windows Firewall/ICS service.
Dependent on: Remote Procedure Call and DCOM Server Process Launcher
2. The Wireless Zero Configuration Service.
Dependent on: Remote Procedure Call and DCOM Server Process Launcher
3. Windows Audio Service. (Manages sound devices)
Dependent on: Remote Procedure Call and DCOM Server Process Launcher

Do you see a pattern here? If you have not manually made any changes to your Services entries, then proceed as follows:

Test. If this has not helped:

Original post here.I am working on a computer for a friend of mine. It was a barebones kit from Newegg (ie, no brand and model). The motherboard is Asus something or another, if that is relevant here I can find out what exactly.I sat down at this machine and noticed a "Windows Security Alert" notifying of the firewall being turned off. I attempted to turn it back on, but to no avail. It has been a downward spiral since then of discovering more and more issues. With so many things at once, I assume this is some sort of infection and not everything coincidentally going haywire at once. I've Googled many of the issues independently, but I feel like treating things one at a time isn't going to get to the root of the problem(s). Error: "Driver Initialization failed" (5004, 115)

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, but it still returns this same error. I've been using this firewall for some time now and was working fine. Nothing new done to the computer it is on, except that I renewed my Norton AntiSpam registration. I'm using all three Norton products from 2004 -- Firewall, SystemWorks, AntiSpam.

I notice when I open the program, and it provides a status of each component, that Intrusion Detection is marked as off and needing urgent attention.

A:Solved: Norton Personal Firewall Error

Somehow I managed to resolve this -- ended up totally uninstalling all three Norton products (instead of just the Firewall) and reinstalling. Seems ok now, and all my subscriptions are up to date and working.
