Upper And Lower Case Switch - Music Notes As Periods!

Q: Upper And Lower Case Switch - Music Notes As Periods!

I have a weird problem on an XP Home system that was brought in for repair.
When you turn it on, it comes up with a message. The upper and lower case of the message is switched as shown. The periods are shown as music notes! (I have shown them as as %)
~~~~
wINDoWS cOULD nOT sTArT beCAUSE oF AN ErROR IN THE sOFTWARE%
PLEAsE rEPORT tHIs PROBLEM As:
LOAD nEEDED DLLs fOR kERNEL
PLEAsE cONTACT yOUR sUPPORT PErSON TO rEPORT THIs PROBLEM%
~~~~
If I attempt to go thru safe mode, the options for safe mode, safe with networking, etc, com up - with the same upper/lower case lettering. Choose safe mode option and you get the same message as sbove.

I booted with the XP CD to attempt repair, came up with a different error message.

I am stumped! I would assume a virus, trojan, etc.
I know I can pull the hard drive and format it in another system, then go from there, but trying to avoid that if possible!

Any thoughts on what has caused this issue?

Thanks!
Sharon

A: Upper And Lower Case Switch - Music Notes As Periods!

Since you're familiar with yanking the hard drive - how's about yanking it, installing it in another system, and doing an antivirus scan of it from the "clean" system?

Depending on the virus, you may need to do a repair install - do you have the original XP installation CD?

I'm searching across thirty-some Word documents in one folder. How can I specify a search for words with specific case requirements? I'm looking for the word "lesson," not "Lesson," and I want to see what files it occurs in and where those occurrences are.

Thanks for any help.

PS: Bonus points to anyone who can tell me how to use Word itself to search across multiple Word files. Word's search is a lot easier to use.

Again, thanks.

A:Searching for upper- or lower-case words in files.

The only program that I'm aware of and am 100% certain can do case sensitive searches is GREP... but that requires doing it at the C:\ prompt.

But then again... I don't use Word for anything but term papers.

Everyday I upload some files to my website and to simplify my website operations, I use the same filename and just upload a file with new information every day. The case of file extensions is of no consequence to Windows 7, but it matters to my website. I want to standardize on one case and it doesn't matter which as long it's the same all the time. I have one app, the snipping tool, which seems to generally make files using uppercase, but I have some existing files that are lower case. I have tried to get rid of the lower case extensions by deleting the file and then recreating it with the same name. When I do, Windows changes the case from upper to lower. If I simply create a brand new file with no previous instances of that file in existence (as far as I know), then the default case is upper. How does one go about converting all existing files of a particular type to a standard file extension case, be it upper or lower.

thanks,

atom

A:Change file extension upper/lower case

Not sure you can as Windows is case insensative, but have you tried doing it from a Command prompt, enclosing the filename.ext in double quotes as "filename.ext"?

If that doesn't work, maybe a two step process would.

ren "FileName.EXT" FileName.EX"
ren "FileName.EX" FileName.ext"

Hi.

When I try to change the case from upper to lower or vice versa of filenames n windows explorer, the changes are not accepted. Also, adding or deleting of spaces in existing filename words is also not being accepted. I have admin privileges.

Thank you for help.

A:Can we change the upper/lower case of filenames in Windows Explorer?

Hi Seymoria, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Filenames in Windows Explorer are not case sensitive. This means that for Windows, the filenames ThisIsMyDocument.doc, THISISMYDOCUMENT.DOC and tHiSiSmYdOcUmEnT.DoC are all the same, the file would be found and can be referred to using any of these or any other combination of upper and lower case letters, as long as the name itself stays the same.

Therefore, if you have a file document_1.doc but you'd like to change the first letter to upper case D, selecting rename and changing the first d to D does nothing. Windows simply does not understand it, for it there was no change as the first letter did not change.

You need to work around this by renaming the file first to something else, then rename it again to Document_1.doc, this time using the upper case D. I use a neat trick here, changing the first letter from lower to upper case: I select rename, delete just the first letter of the filename, the one with lower case, then rename again this time entering the upper case first letter.

Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, there is no cd/dvd listed in device manager. Thanks!

A:Upper & Lower filters - Need to replace

Only thing I can think of, would be to reinstall the programs that added them in the first place. (The filters are cd/dvd drivers/driver add-ons that are installed by third party software). In this case, they probably came from iTunes.

Otherwise a system restore would restore the registry to the state before you deleted them. Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

After having months of problems, my girlfriend finally got a replacement PC sent to her, but I've only gone and messed it up and now I'm in big trouble!

Upon arrival, the disk drive was not being recognized and wouldn't even open. I researched this and found it was a common problem, so attemted all the online fixes without success. Then, in another attempt, I STUPIDLY deleted the wrong upper and lower filters and now windows won't start at all.

Being a brand new computer there is no restore point to work from and, like I said, the disk drive won't even open to boot from disk!

So, is there any way I can fix the damage? All I can think of is borrowing and external disk drive and a copy of the CD, but I was hoping there might be a simpler way I can do this before the girlfriend comes home and kills me!

Where did you do the deletion?

If the computer hasn't had much added to it you could do a Factory Restore. How you do that depends upon the brand and model name and number, check that companies Web site.

The computer very likely has a recovery environment built in, so it's just a matter of using the correct Function key during boot to access it and then do a full restore.

Hello everyone, I really need your help. My Sony Vaio laptop (model: SVE151G13M) did not recognize my dvd/cd-rom anymore and dumb as I am, I tried to fix this myself. On the website of Microsoft I read a step-by-step guide on how to remove the upper filters and lower filters to fix this problem. However, I may have removed too many, or the wrong filters. Now my laptop does not want to reboot anymore due to missing files. I read that I can recover the system by pushing the ASSIST button, choose troubleshoot/recovery etc. The system asks me to rescue my documents first, and of course that is my main goal.. Save as many files, photos, documents and videos as I can. I attached an external hard disk with plenty of space on there, chose to rescue the files and waited. However, I have tried multiple times but it is not working (error message). Does anyone know how to replace the deleted upper filters and lower filters, without having to reboot or recover the entire system and loose all of my files? I read something about 'Last known good configuration' but I cannot find this in the options when I press ASSIST. Please, I am desperate since I am also in the process of writing my master thesis and really need this computer.. :smileysad:

I also checked HK something local and i found the right file some long code like 4Dxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxx and i didnt see anything lower filter or upper filter.
I have a Dell 1735 studio laptop running windows 7
heres what happened. I got an ISO of rollercoaster tycoon which i burned onto a disc on my upstarts computer (which runs XP) and i installed fine on that computer and played the game and everything was all good. I take the CD-ROM that i burned with rollercoaster tycoon and I slip it into my aforementioned laptop. some rollercoaster tycoon thing comes up, I click install and think everything is fine. When i click the .exe file to play the game, it asks me for my E: drive. i check my computer and there is no E: drive. I also cannot eject my disk now because the computer isnt detecting an optical drive, let alone a CD to eject. I also have no cd tray on my laptop, the disc just slides in and im pretty sure theres no manual eject button. I looked.
Any Help? I tried to look a bunch of stuff online. I even did one thing relating to disabling integrity checks via the command window? i dont really know what else to do. restarting and system restores didn't work.

I would appreciate any help. Thank You!

I cannot get my Dell Inspiron 1420 Laptop running windows vista to recognize my DVD drive, the light on it blinks, makes some noises but nothing ever shows up in "my computer" however they do show up on my device manager under DVD/CD-ROM Drives and both with yellow flags by them. One is called a "Base System Device" and gives a code 31. The second is called "TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L632H ATA Device" and gives a code 10.

I found a thread on here that said to go accessories>run>regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE......but when it says to change the upper and lower limits is where i get stuck.....I HAVE NONE! they are nowhere to be found! The only thing on the right hand side is under the name column>default under the Type column>REG_SZ and under data (where i assume the upper/lower SHOULD be) all it says is "(value not set)"

If someone could please help me it would be greatly appreciated!! I have searched the web more on how to fix this issue than any research paper and I am at the end of my patience!!

I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RS420 with a Pioneer DVR-106D dvd writer. I was creating a recovery disk when after writing the DVD, it asked for a cd-r. The drive kept having errors, and I checked the media on another pc and they were fine. I saw on several posings that removing the upper and lower filters from the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318) would fix the problem. Now it wont even recognize the dvd roma at all. The device mgr. says all is OK. I have uninstalled and re-installed the device from there, and the IDE as well, and I have phicically removed the drive, rebooted, and re-connected the drive and re-booted but to no avail. Uh-Oh - i did not back up the registry (makes me a dummy) and the recovery is not functioning due to my c partition being too small.

CAN I SOMEHOW REPLACE THE UPPER / LOWER FILTERS MANUALLY? ANY OTHER SOLUTIONS? MY DVD RECOVERY DISC SHOULD BE OK, BUT WITHOUT THE SONY CD-R, I DID NOT COMPLETE THE PROCESS. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS AS TO THE CD-R AND ITS CONTENTS TO REINSTALL XP?

Hi,

Ever since I've linked my MS and Skype account, my email is now always "seen" as [email protected] LIVE.COM.
Even my Windows Phone when I sign in with MS account, it gets recognized as @LIVE.COM at the end.

It's slightly annoying, I've checked all my settings on the web/computer/phone.. Nothing does the trick. I do sign in with lowercase email, but it somehow gets changed to uppercase LIVE.COM on it's own.

Anyone else experienced something like this?

This is a screenshot of switching local account to MS. Note that name before LIVE.COM is in lowercase, and I did sign in with all lower case email.

imgur: the simple image sharer

I've also asked on Microsoft answers webpage, but they have no idea what I'm talking about

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro x64, and Nokia Lumia 930 (Cyan).

Any kind of tip is greatly appreciated.

Edit: add a space after @ in email to break the link.

Hi Christine

Are you sure it only happens in Word 2003? Just to check, type a few lines in NotePad and WordPad to test. Let us know if you get all caps in those programs as well.

I'm not sure that System Restore will help for this problem, but if you've a recent Restore point that is just prior to the all-capitals trouble, you could try it.

What I first thought would be a simple keyboard problem apparently isn't. When I type the upper case D using the right shift button, I only can get a lower case "d". When using the left shift button, I get nothing but a cursor flash and no letter at all. If I hit the D key again (2nd time) holding down the left shift button, I do finally get the upper case D and as many as I want thereafter.

What I have done so far: Thinking this was a bad keyboard, I purchased a brand new keyboard.......same problem. I then borrowed the keyboard off my wife's computer which is working well.........same problem on my computer. So not likely a keyboard problem. I then uninstalled the keyboard driver and re-installed it THREE TIMES........still same problem. This is an HP Media Center computer with XP Pro so I downloaded the very latest keyboard driver for this keyboard and installed.........still same problem. Of course I rebooted after each install.

I then went to the PC Doctor diagnostic tools and did the keyboard test which puts a keyboard on the screen and as you press each key, it blanks out the key pressed on the screen. All keys work find except for when I go to upper case with either shift button and type the letter D. Instead of just the D going blank on the screen, the C key and the CTRL key go blank also at the very same time. So for some reason my D key is being translated somewhere into a D, C with the CTRL button signal. How can that be?

I hope someone can help or explain this problem for me.

I have a DVD I made of my website. The website is constructed with every thing relative to the local system so that it will operate from the DVD.

My XP system has 2 DVD drives. One is a read only (E:) and the other is a R/W drive (F:). The problem is that on the read only drive ALL the directory and file names are in upper case and they are truncated to 8 characters, DOS files? For instance ThisIsanImage.jpg wil be THISISANI.JPG and index.html will be INDEX.HTML.

If I copy the files to my hard drive the result is the same. Of course the html involved will not function with the case of names and directories being changed.

However, if I put the DVD in my R/W drive the directory names and file names are correct and in mixed case with names longer than 8 characters. The website works fro this drive and copies to my hard drive ok. I have never run into this before.

Any one know what's going on. Do I have a setting some where in XP that I don't know about.

Your assistance is most welcome as I want to be able to send this DVD to other people, but I can't be confident that they won't have a problem.

Regards,
SD

I have what i hope is a quick/easy question to answer. Whenever i transfer files from a CD-RW disk back to my hard drive, the names convert into upper case. This doesn't happen from the floppy drive or cd-r disks, only cd-rw & only on transfer back to the hard drive, not in transfer to the disk.

I have a HP cd writer (getting fairly old now) with adaptec direct cd software. i'm running windows 98. I DON'T have the "allow all upper case names" option in folder options ticked and it also happened on my old computer and is still happening on my new computer (same cd-writer transfered to the new computer).

Does anyone know how i can stop it happening? i know it's not a huge issue, but i've just bought a new computer (still getting it up & running) & i really don't want a PILE of files all with upper case names if i can avoid it, so really hoping it can be fixed

I read that deleting them solved the problem for some people

A:cd drive missing from MY COMPUTER. Lower upper filters missing??

It could be a hardware problem ie. seized motor in your drive.

Quick way to test this. Insert a a disc in the tray, make a note of any writing or picture you can see on the disc, push the tray in. Wait for a minute or so, then eject the disc. If the picture/writing is in the same position as when you first put it in, then your drive motor is most likely knackered.

If this is the case, only real fix is a new drive.

Today as i was waking my computer up and typing in my password, it was keeping my entries as if I had caps on.. I am able to see the actual password as I type it, so I know it wasn't an error on my part.I tried typing with caps on and caps off-same thing .I did this about 4 times and it finally allowed me in

I also have been having issues with connecting to my network at home where the yellow flag on my internet connection shows and I lose my connection, but gain it back in 30 seconds. I keep being told I have a broken cable (I'm on Wifi) or I have a router or access point issue, but then I get back on my wifi in 30 seconds or so, and then am okay for awhile. I have Windows 8, connect wirelessly with AT&T. My nephew installed a hidden network and we have our house network. It says connected unless the yellow flag shows up, then it says limited, but then fixes itself. All these issues happen on Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Whew! I am sure its multiple issues.

It does seem like ever since my nephew set up the additional network and renamed the main house network is when the issues started happening.  I am right next to the router and the modem, so its not a distance or wall preventing me from connecting.

hello~

I start up my computer and after the windows logo loads a message pop ups that says: lsass.exe system error- an invalid parameter was passed to a service or function. I am not sure how to fix this since I can't log into windows in either normal or safe modes. any help to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

Seth

A:lsass.exe (lower case L)

If it's "lsass.exe" with a lower case "L", then it is a virus in the Sasser family, most likely. You'll need to scan it with a good antivirus either by using a boot CD with an antivirus on it or take your drive out and hook it up as a secondary drive in another computer. That should get you back up and running. You may have to do a repair installation of Windows after you've scanned it.

The lower case L on my computer has gone berserk. It will not function correctly in Windows. When struck nothing appears. However, if the caps lock key is activated and the shift key is held down, the lower case L works. The upper case L and all other keys work fine.

This is only true in Windows. Iím running Windows Pro 2000 and in the Windows login screen, lower case Ls can be typed in both the user name and the password fields. As soon as Windows comes up, it stops working.

I have tried three different keyboards, reloaded Windows 2000 and the keyboard software but the key still fails.

I would appreciate any help.

My computer:
--------------------------
AMD Athon Processor
AT/AT Compatible
256 MB RAM
--------------------------
The keyboard is a Microsoft Internet Pro PS2 (Brand New)

A:Lower case L does not type

You say that you have tried different keyboards, and that outside of windows the lower case L works, so the only thing that I could think of (and it's a long shot), is that when Windows has loaded (and any startup programs as well), a process or program has changed the mapping of the lower case L to perform some other function.
Have you tried booting into safe mode? This should stop any non-Windows programs from loading. Give this a try and see what happens. If the L works normally, then you need to see what programs are being loaded (in normal mode), and remove them one at a time (restarting and testing each time).

I just upgraded my 8 year old iiyama monitor for a new Dell monitor with a bigger screen with higher resolution - oh and I have got new spectacles. I had replaced the capacitors twice in the iiyama (having to keep jabbing the "On" button to get the current surge going) as I don't care for these new wide screen type monitors but I had to get updated eventually.

Anway, with my fantastic new monitor, I now notice that on both the Desktop (of Vista) and in Winodws Explorer all the letters "i" and "l" have an almost imperceptible red fringe or hue. How weird is that?

This happens whether I use the VGA or the DVI cable connection.

Amazingly, this issue was raised by wguru and Saga Lout on this forum 18 months ago but it is not clear to me whether anyone ever came up with a solution. The possibility of a virus or registry corruption error was mentioned but I did not understand whether this was ever proven.

I run about 3 virus programs most days and I woudl be devastated if I unknowingly had a virus. It is difficult but not impossible to believe. Having said that, I have occasionally tweaked the Rgeistry e.g. to get rid of "klingons".

I suspect I have had this issue a while but only with the new monitor has it become noticeable.

Any suggestions on what to try next would be appreciated.

As a newbie, first poster, it seems that I am prohibited from sending a PM to wguru or Saga Lout.

A:Solved: Why are lower case letters i and l red fringed ?

check for updated video drivers and reinstall them
in the device manager uninstall the video card
reboot tapping f8 and choose low resolution mode
when windows finishes rebooting
disable a/virus
install your drivers

Hi I changed all lower case of "city" to Uppercase "CITY" USING Find and Replace. But when I tried to change the same "CITY" to "city" it didn't work. However I did get the message we have made 12 replacements but not even one "CITY" was changed to "city." When I tried to replace "CITY" with another word in lowercase, it replaced the different word but in Uppercase. Please help this novice in word. Thank you.

A:How to change words in Uppercase to lower case

Hello Mike, thanks for your reply. No I am not using Excel but Ms Word 2016. I think I found the solution to my problem. Find and Replace is case sensitive. Therefore to change Uppercase words to lowercase one has to go to "more" option and check the box "Match Case." I did that and I was able to change all "CITY" to "city" using Find and Replace.I hope this may be helpful to someone. If anyone has other solutions to this problem please do post it.Your novice in MS Word

On the "Age" thing, don't even go there we have members in their 90's who get shot down in flames for calling the "Age" Card. I'm just 71 and, more than likely, there's a 17 year old reading this.
Unfortunately, in this Forum, once you've hit the "Post" button. That's what you've get, unless you grovel to FE and he makes the change with his Silver Mouse. But don't press your luck, he might weaken the once, but is unlikely to weaken a second time!
The technology is available but using it makes for sloppy composition and allows people to Post one thing and then change it, after others have replied, which might make them look stupid, which few of us admit too. Now, this doesn't happen every day, but every few days it just doesn't go away. Groove just keeps skipping forward songs impossibly fast, where their names just blink across the play bar faster than I can click. It leaves me unable to do anything on Groove,
and as well as on Sticky Notes. It looks like something just keeps hitting the Tab key, since a little selector box rapidly flashes across the new note, menu, and trash selections, as well as the written area. I have tried unplugging my keyboard, unplugging
my mouse, but the issue still persists. Normally a shut down will solve it, but I really don't think this is something that should just be happening and it would be great if I could find a solution. It is difficult to word this issue, and I haven't been able

I'm trying to do a fresh install of windows 7; just formatted Vista off of a hp media center pc which had a gnarly virus in it.

All seemed to be going well until about halfway through, the install completely froze. After shutting down the machine and putting the disk back in to start over, I noticed that when the customary "press any key to boot" message appears, it looks just like I wrote the subject line. Alternating between CAPS and lowercase, and instead of an ellipse (...) it shows three music notes.

I'm not sure if it did it the first time I tried to do the install, but now if I try again it will freeze randomly and seems to be going much slower than it should be.

Any ideas what in the world that UppERcaSE LowERcAsE business is about?

A:[SOLVED] PrEsS AnY KeY tO BooT FrOM CD (insert music notes)

Hey. It sounds to me like that hard drive still has remnants of the malware you've had. The drive should be low level formatted with special software usually available from the manufacturer. This is much different than a normal format. It will put the drive as close back to factory condition as an end user could possibly make it. Then you'll be alright to proceed installing Windows 7 on it. Good luck! And let us know how it goes or if you need anything else.

I am connecting a new MB to my old case Switch & LEDs
the Blk & Wht wires go to the PWR-BT pins
the Grn & Blu wires go to the PWR LED and
the Yel & Brn wires go to the HDD LED
The original connections for the LEDs are not marked + or -
however the pins on the New MB are... the only indication on the old board is GRN /YEL (but not actually where these pins are) would that mean that the Grn & Yel leads are positive (+)? would anything drastic happen if I hook the LEDs up backwards? (so far I just have the power on/off connected)

It shouldn't hurt anything to hook the led's up backwards, they just won't lite up. So if they don't work you can reverse them.

Hello everyone, I'm here today because a couple of days ago my computer would no longer boot up, as in it just would not power up. It's funny because one day I shut my computer off for the night and then when I tried to turn it on the next morning it simply would not power on.

After reading various guides and forum posts on various websites I learned a few ways in which you could test to see if it was either the PSU, Motherboard or case switch that may be causing the problem. Now, I have already successfully tested the PSU by jumping the 14th pin (green wire) and one of the ground pins (black wire) on the 24 pin connector. After I flipped the PSU switch my case fan started to spin letting me know my PSU wasn't the problem.

So, my question now is how do I test to see if my case switch is causing the problem? My computer expertise is on an average level and I'm not sure whether my case switch connects directly to the PSU or via the mother board, although I'm assuming it connects to the mother board as my PC is a 2 year old Alienware rig.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jinto

Hi

There should be a wiring loom running from the front of the pc to the board, do a google on the motherboard and find out which connector is the power switch, it's usually next to the reset. speaker, HDD led and power led pins, once found short it out and if the mobo starts up its the case switch if not the mobo is dead.

This is for an Antec case, where the inner, plastic coil on-off switch has come loose. The plastic pin retaining the flat, spiral coil on a side has broke (poor design, which is surprising for this make). The marginal mini pin snapped == case front is practically trashed. And if case front is no longer available, of course all components must be moved to fit inside another new separate case.

So looking for the best glue I can find to secure it back.

I hessitate to shoot glue, since every time the switch is depressed from the outside, finger pressure will be applied.

Anyway, what would be the best high strength glue for bonding plastic-on-plastic?
Is the glue gun better?

(notice that certain glues write out certain types of plastics under their recommended applications)

A:plastic pc case switch broke - looking for best glue

It is difficult to recommend a glue for this purpose for several reasons; but, my experience with vulcanizing plastics goes back over 50 years when I was assembling plastic model cars and I learned the difference between vulcanizing glues and what I would call surface glues.

Plumbers' glue for plastic pipes vulcanizes the plastic, meaning that it melts the plastic on the opposing surfaces and bonds them together with a chemical reaction. If done properly, the glued joint can be stronger than the rest of the object.

Read the label and apply the instructions as well as can be done for such dissimilar surfaces.

I *think* i have connected it up correctly, the on-board red led lights up to tell me its got power, the front LCD screen lights up (everything showing). Problem is, when I actually try to turn it on, nothing happens. I tried also using the remote to turn it on with no luck. No fans spin up, no beeping, nothing....

The power cable appears to be an orange and white cable - which i've tried both ways round.

Hey guys,

I was organzing my mp3's into folders. I did it by band name then album name, I have a folder named Industrial Music A-M which is where I put all the A-M bands. So I got them all organized and I cut the folders and pasted them in there. Some of them were duplicates so I said no to not overwrite them. Everything seems dandy. I go to check on them and only some showed up(A's, B's and C's), AHHHH! Then I look further down the list, every folder that I had in there previously from letters D-M(including all the ones I have just pasteD) have also dissapeared. I don't know where they went, they didn't go into another folder or anything. My harddrive hasn't lost space so they haven't been deleted. Now when I go into the folder my computer lags and sometimes freezes up. So the solution to freezing is just simply restart my computer but once I restart it, it gets to the screen with Windows displayed on it and it has the 3 or 4 squares running across and then my computer restarts itself and this can go in for 5 6 sometimes 7 times before it actually starts up. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! Any required information that could help just please let me know if I have forgotten it.

Sounds like your HDD is on the brink of collapse!

Once you finally boot into Windows (Safe mode even), have you tried searching your HDD for *.mp3 or *.wma or whatever?
If your HDD is still showing the original disk size then chances are they are somewhere. Possibly written to bad sectors though.

You haven't enable System Restore have you? If so, roll back to a day you know everything was fine. If not ... remember it when you re-build next time!

Good luck! :grinthumb

Happy Holidays Everyone! A friend of mine just converted a record album to a CD for me. The sound is great but after one song has played it won't go to the next track unless I manually forward it by the remote. After playing track one, for example, it will just go silent until I manually switch to track two. After track one has played, even though there is just silence the display counter is still working and moving forward.

Unfortunately, my friend has now left town for the holidays so I can't ask him what program he used. I'd sure appreciate any help as this is going to be a Christmas present (a late one it looks like).

I checked all the individual song files and they all look the same. "Read only" is not checked. Would that do the trick?

A game i was playing's website got infected with some type of malware, and ever since that happened and i was on it, I've been getting popup ads in the lower left and the lower right corners of my screen, no sound or anything. Occasionally i get redirects as well. I ran a malwarebytes quick and full scan and got nothing, a Microsoft security essentials scan and got nothing, and a adwcleaner scan and got nothing. I saw some other people had this problem, even on this website but they used combofix, which i'm not suppose to use unless told to. So yeah, hope you guys can help :3. 'Quick edit, the ads were from ad.yieldmanager, and ad.xtendmedia, if it matters.

Hi, do you guys know of any Linux utility -or Windows- that is good for letting me jot down notes --simple ones, just a few words, no more than say 50-- but then later on allow me to search through all my notes for certain keywords? I know it sounds like a job for a mini database or a spreadsheet but I don't want to load a huge program for such a simple task. I'd like something lean and fast that has only those functions: New note, Edit note, Search in notes.

I would thereafter -when I have more time- organize and export my notes to a proper database or spreadsheet.

BTW, I'm using Kontact on FedoraCore6 right now, so it'd be beautiful if the proposed utility is compatible with Kontact.

I've been having popups in the lower left and right of my pc.  I ran malwarebytes and the popups still persist.  I thought I needed to remove the 5 things that it quaranitned so I did as was still getting these things.  Now the internet explorer screens look different.  mostly white.  It is hiding areas that can be clicked but I knwo they are there because the pointer goes from an arrow to the hand when I acroll over.  the worst thing is that the popups are still there.  Not sure where to go or what to do. Your site helped me on another issue I had in the past.  Oh I tried system restore and it didnt help the screen..I think the only system restore point was after all the above.

Heya Guys.

Quick question for you. Had this laptop for about 4 years now, and it's still running great and able to do anything i need it too.

However i've noticed that now and then, it'll severely lag up for a week or 2, then after this period it'll be running fine. It'll run fine for a months or so, and suddenly lag again. I have no idea what causes it :S

I've ran virus scans (i have Mcafee) and made sure no background applications are running.

The only other thing that confuses me is the Laptop LED display bar (i don't know the technical name for the symbols) but the one that lights up when the laptop is using alot of it's CPU doesn't light up that often. I've check the power management, and it's still set to high performance.

Any tips/ideas greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have an Acer Aspire X1700 (Details
It's about 2 1/2 years old now. Came with Windows Vista, I upgraded it to Windows 7. Also has a newer video card than what came with it.

Anyway, The PSU fan is getting really obnoxious, it gets really loud (more or less like a lawn mower). I have taken the thing apart and have tried every suggestion given to quiet it down, which it does for a whole week or two. This is a small form factor PC, so to even take the power supply out you have to basically take out everything else just to get to it. I have looked for replacements but they are very obsolete. It's only 220W anyway, so i'd like something a little more powerful.

What I want to do is get a larger case that I can use the same hardware is (motherboard, drives, etc) and purchase a larger power supply for that case. 220W really limits the PC. The small case holds a lot of heat even with all fans cleaned and working properly. Even just taking a CD/DVD out that was in it is very hot. I want a case with better airflow than this one.
I really am not sure what kind of case to get that will meet my needs. I don't want anything really fancy. If possible I'd like to get it off newegg.com

Any suggestions would be great.

My pc has been stalling recently for anything from 5 to 20 sec at a time before continuing as normal.
If I invoke Task Mgr (& resource monitor) while it is stalled they do not show any processes hogging the CPU or HDD etc. The PC is just not responding at all - a hardware fault?

I have done every test I can think of including a clean install of Win7x64 and low-level scans of my HDD's. All results were good except for the odd result I got HDTune.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what this result means?

A:PC stalling for short periods

Depending on how you did the "clean" install - and what programs you've installed - this could be a hardware issue.

Please provide the info from this report: SF Diagnostic Tool

It appears (to me) that the system is accessing the hard drive for some reason.
Try this way of using Task Manager:

Quote:
Task Manager:
Also, you can monitor the system for excessive resource consumption. To do this, open up Task Manager by right clicking on the Task Bar.
Then select the Processes tab.
Then select the "Show processes from all users" button (in the lower left)
Then select the View menu item, then select "Select columns"
In the Select columns window, place checkmarks next to I/O Reads and I/O Other.
Click OK to accept the changes.
Resize the Task Manager window so you can see the most of the columns.
Wait for the system to freeze.
Look at all of the columns to see if there's anything that looks excessively high - if so, let us know the Image name of the process.
FWIW - System Idle Process is supposed to have high CPU readings - anything else with high CPU readings is an issue.

Hello,

my computer will randomly crash and display BSOD. Generally, this will come in periods. As in, I get a lot of crashes during a short period of time and then it can be calm for sometimes even several days. This has been going on for as long as I can remember and I did seek help on the microsoft forums a while back. They were however unable to solve the problem there.
Due to keeping track of which dump files I already supplies to them, I deleted the old ones after every upload there as more crashes kept happening. Because of this, not all dump files from every crash this computer ever had will be provided with the attachment and if this huge amount I'm still providing you with is still insufficient, I can try to find the microsoft forum thread to recover the old dump files.

The actual error message on the BSOD's has been varying a lot.

A:Periods of random BSOD

Error messages on the BSOD include irql not less or equal, bad pool header, memory manager and page fault in nonpaged area.

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit system that's been exhibiting periods of unusual slowness for the hardware I have.

It's a gaming system with an i7 quad-core processor and 6GB of tri-channel memory, which I also use for email, Internet, etc.

It was lightning fast when purchased two years ago but has slowed very gradually and now has noticeable slow episodes from time to time,

not just at boot but when using the Internet, retrieving email, processing documents, using Windows Explorer, etc.

I did thorough virus scans, disk cleanup and defrag, but it still hesitates a bit here and there. I suspect malware of some kind. I manually control

some startup services so I don't think I have that bogging the system. Can someone help me find out if something rotten has crept in?

User Boopme sent me here from the "Am I Infected" forum to post my DDS and GMER Logs. Topic referenced is here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic455502.html ~ OB I ran other diagnostics there and they didn't find any problems. Note: I'm having some severe health problems and they affect my ability to think clearly but I'll do my best to follow the directions. I don't know what I should have specified as the Topic Title. Please try to be patient. I'm doing my best at jumping between several browser windows and collecting the required information. The DDS.txt info follows. The Attach.txt file is attached. I was asked to run GMER on my 64-bit Win 7 system. The directions said to tick every checkbox except IAT/EAT, Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, and Show All. Unfortunately, the only clickable checkboxes were: Services, Registry, and Files. The rest were grayed-out. I ran GMER with these options and it did not report any problems, so there is no rootkit scan report to attach to this post. My system still has times when it seems slower than normal, but maybe it isn't caused by malware. Howdy, as the title says I've been getting blue screens during peak loading and off peak loading of both CPU and GPU usage. Temperature levels are reading normal (~34C for CPU/MOBO and ~45C for GPU during peak). Fresh install of Windows was done not long ago due to the increasing events of BSOD after upgrading graphics card and RAM. Graphics card was replaced due to a faulty fan which was thought to be the initial culprit, however since it was increasing in frequency. It became to the point of once every 2 hours so Windows 7 fresh install was done.

Since installation it has been running smoothly until tonight, where it has BSOD twice within 5 hours with similar or same messages as previously recorded. First time posting here so please let me know if I have missed a step out.

Have read previous posts and followed steps as seen so will be unable to determine if working as intended or errors still occurring. However as a safety I am attempting to give all information I can in regard to the issue. If I missed something I do apologise.

A:BSOD During both high and low usage periods

Extra things I failed to note and I apologise for not doing so initially:
MSI Afterburner Software and AMD Catalyst Control software is not installed. The driver however is the AMD 14-4 build.
All hard drives are Seagate Barracudas and SATA of varying sizes (no SSD).
Peak usage gaming is 4 EVE accounts on Medium/High settings and anti-aliasing off while playing.
Most previous BSODs occurred whilst web browsing or data logging for stellar tracking.
There have been increased instances of a "checkerboard effect" on limited parts of the screen. It mostly occurs on software running on my second monitor (Samsung S27C570H).

If you're using a disk cleaner (such as CCleaner), please stop while we're troubleshooting.

Only 35 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 1=60 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available.

As well as I remember, the first one said that I was trying to use something too old to run on my system. After that things were fine for a few days, then it occurred again for no apparent reason. Repetitions have been occurring more and more frequently during all different sorts of applications, sometimes with no application running ... . The bsod message (which goes by faster than I can read it before restart begins) is different each time . This morning the system crashed again as soon as I brought up Firefox. I restarted in safe mode with networking and it crashed again. I restarted in normal Windows mode and it has stayed up for four hours without any problem. This is the usual scenario. sigh. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Muchas gracias, granny v

Hi guys, I'll keep this one short and let the files talk for me, but I've been getting BSOD's at random intervals. Here are the dump files:

We need more information to analyze your logs, they are incomplete. Follow Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions, let the tool run until it has completely finished and then upload the new logs.
