# Add Remove In Control Panel Doesn't Work

Q: Add Remove In Control Panel Doesn't Work

I'm running Microsoft professional, Internet Explorer and have a Google toolbar.

All attempts to add software are blocked and the add remove feature in the control panel won't open. For example, I can't update my old version of Itunes because the popup for the update gets blocked. I know about the popup blocker in the Google toolbar, and how to handle that, that isn't the problem. In Internet Options, the security setting is at medium and under the advanced tab I reset all options to default.

A: Add Remove In Control Panel Doesn't Work

What version of IE are you using?

What other security programs do you have on the computer? It's possible that one of them is blocking the pop-ups.

Well I dont know what caused this but I can open the control panel but when I click on something eg. "uninstall a program" or "change the theme" there comes a message saying windows explorer has stopped working, thus restarting explorer.exe

I'm running windows 7 professional 32 bit.

Edit: it also crashes when I reopen the control panel when the control panel is already open.

When I click on My Computer either on Desktop or in the Start menu folder, a screen appears as shown here. But I can access these items from the Windows explorer icon on the task bar!!
Also whenever I click on any folder or drive in My computer window, the contents open in a new window and I end up in a large number of windows opened by the time I reach a file or a folder.
How can I fix this?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Sounds like you may have a virus.

If you can, boot into Safe Mode with Networking and run a full virus scan.

Malwarebytes is an excellent choice for this job and you can download it here: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

When I click on "Back up your computer" in Control Panel->System and Security, I get a gui that says "Back up or restore your files" at the top and nothing else. The rest of the window is blank. No "Turn off schedule",
"Create a system image" or "Create a system repair disc" on the left. I've tried a reboot. This is on Windows 7 Pro Service pack 1 (32 bit - 4gb ram). I've been using the backup method for several years. All of a sudden - poof.

A:Control Panel Backup & Restore link doesn't work

Have you run
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
lately?
Either there is a problem in the windows file structure which sfc will check for, or a service the feature depends on has been disabled.
That's about the only two scenarios I can come up with.

I just spent the last 30 hours downloading and installing all the update for 8.1 on my new Acer Laptop. Now the system will not shut down, update will not open and restore does not work. Also the sound system does not work. I've tried the recovery options but all I get is unending aero. Shutdown produces background apps still running and will only work if I physically turn off the power.

I'm at a loss to know what to do next. I did not expect to have these problems with a brand new system and by following all the proper procedures for updating.

hi ,
i was trying to fix one of my friends old computer. On that all of a sudden sound stopped working. sound files seems to be playing ,but no output comes through speakers or headphones.
I have done all the basic tests, and evrythng is fine. When i checked in control panel ->sound and audio->voeme tab , device volume ans speaker settings i can't use, it appears like disabled.
Pls note the audio drivers(realtek alc650) are properly installed. I have spent more than a day downloading and reinstalling the drivers and googling to find out the issue. But still in vain. Now i want to try reinstalling XP, but my disks r missing , so i need to give a try in this forum. Pls help.

Look in device manager if the sound device is enabled. If you don't see it, you might need to enable it in bios.

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

A:Help, Control Panel doesn't let me in (Hijackthis log)

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

I have to tell you that is a very infected machine!

The P2P programs you have installed expose you to risks because of the nature of the P2P file sharing process. File sharing/P2P programs rely on members giving and gaining unrestricted access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. It also exposes you to very malicious worms and trojans. You change those risky default settings to a safer configuration but the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection.

Go to add/remove programs and remove all P2P programs from your machine!

Please download (save) SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your desktop. SmitfraudFix runs under W2K, XP only.

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Select all of the contents and Extract them
to a new folder called SmitfraudFix.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may aler... Read more

Odd problem. Yesterday I wanted to check the status of the batteries in my Microsoft wireless mouse, so opened Control Panel, and clicked "Printers and Other Hardware" (whose icon actually shows a mouse). Choices are Pick a task: View installed printers or Add a printer. Under "or Pick a Control Panel icon, I have only Printers and Faxes, and Scanners and Cameras. THE MOUSE ISN'T A CHOICE, AS IN NOT THERE! In order to get to the mouse, I have to switch to classic (Win98) mode, which contains an icon for the mouse.

Wasn't that way we I first got the computer. Why doesn't my mouse show on the XP style of the Control Panel?

I use an application that installs itself as both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. I have no idea why, just bad programming I guess (I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit). As such its control panel shows up twice in Control Panels. It's a small complaint I know but for the sake of having OCD I'd rather there only be one version of the cp.

Despite Googling for a while on this subject I can't find a proper solution. I've seen plenty of suggestions mentioning removing/renaming the associated cpl file but, this control panel doesn't appear to use a cpl file, I can't find one at any rate. The only thing I can even vaguely find referencing it is in the Registry. I tried deleting those keys but the 32bit control panel persists (so I restored them for now).

Those registry keys mention a DLL file, inside the program's installation folder, and sure enough there are two, one called ControlPanelResources.dll and the other ControlPanelResources64.dll. As stated the app is configured to install itself twice, seemingly, the 32bit and the 64bit version, all in the same place -Program Files (x86).

I have also looked in the registry under the usual areas relating to control panels; HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Control Panel, but there are no keys in there referencing these control panels. The keys I found are elsewhere in the registry.

Any ideas? All I want to do is remove the 32bit instance from control panels, nothing else. But clearly the cpl (if there is one) is h... Read more

I use Windows XP. I have two problems using the Add/Remove function in my Control Panel: specifically I want to remove a program called "Creative Zen V Series (R2). The prompt after attempting to remove comes back with "The specific module could not be found" and leaves the program showing. I need to get rid of this entry.

Secondly I want to remove "Calendar Creator 9" and when this is selected to remove, I get a prompt that says "To install the program it must first be removed using the Control Panel function Add/Remove. This is frustrating as that is exactly what I'm trying to do, NOT INSTALL the program again.

Could use some help with this. Remaining programs can be removed easily using the add/remove function.

Hi Everyone,

I have been struggling with getting my SLI to work.

System:
| i7-2770k 3.5gHz | ASUS P8Z68-V Pro | 2x4gb Kingston Hyper X | PoV Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 1gb | Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 1gb | Cougar 750watt PSU | Windows 7 Enterprise |

The VGA cards are:
Connected via SLI link.
Connected to power.
Connected correctly on the Mother Board.

My Mother Board is SLI compatible.
My PSU is SLI compatible.
My drivers are installed and up to date.
I have re-installed my drivers as well.
I have updated my Bios as well. (During which my Primary drive got corrupted and I had to start all over)

Nvidia Control Panel is STILL not giving me any SLI configuration options. It detects that both VGA cards are connected and I can select which core to use, but nothing about SLI.

I'm stuck and need to be pointed in the right direction.

Can anyone offer some advice?

A:Nvidia Control Panel doesn't show SLI options

I know you said you've updated the bios but have you checked for settings related to SLI in the BIOS? There may be a setting to enable it.

Also from some of the forums I've read, people have resolved a similar issue by rolling back the Realtek Ethernet driver, apparently this is related to the Z68 boards. May be worth a shot at least since updating the driver would be simple enough.

Hey everyone,

This is the first time I've posted about any kind of computer issue, so please respond if you need any kind of information that I don't give... but anyway...

Every time I go into the control panel and try to open up Network Connections, it simply freezes. Nothing loads, it just sits there with the little hourglass until I ctrl+alt+delete out of it... I am running Windows XP, SP2 I believe. Any help would be greatly appreciated, let me know if you need me to find out any more information about my computer as well.

Also, I don't know if this is relevant or will help in any way, but I usually have a problem with svchost.exe... when I open up process explorer, it is generally using upwards of 80% of my CPU... so I double click on that process and kill each of the ones that are using high amounts of my CPU, usually around 2 or 4 that I end up killing. Don't know if this can be tied in at all... but just thought it could possibly help.

OK .. a the Add/Remove Control Panel will NOT inititate. This is happening on a friend's computer. Anyone out there able to point me in the direction of a 'cure' ???

This happens for all apps within control panel, but with different msg.
So I can't get to any control panel apps.

What I have tried:
. Works the same in safe mode. (Except for log-off)
. I have run the following programs for both virus and root-kit.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
RogueKiller
Spybot - Search & Destroy 2
SpywareBlaster
SUPERAntiSpyware
Avast
No reported errors.
. I have googled and found similar problems but not the same. Their fixes don't work.
. My two latest image backups have the same control panel problem.
I didn't notice it until the log-off problem started.
Please let me know if I need to post any logs or info.
I am not a computer wizard! That's why I am asking you guys.
Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Log-off and Control Panel don't work

The only times I've seen that Control Panel couldn't open, on various versions of Windows, was when the computer had serious infections.

As for "My two latest image backups have the same control panel problem", if the computer has problems they will be in the backup and restore to the same condition as when the backup was made. Or in other words, Windows has to be in good order before a good backup can be accomplished, so the problems probably existed before the earliest of those 2 backups.

Have you tried putting the words control panel in the Start, Search box then pressing Enter to see if that works?

A:Control Panel won't work..help!!

Try the fix at Kelly's Korner. Restore the Control Panel - #256 on the left.Right click on it and save the .reg file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

Hi Windows Seven Forums,
I'm walking through what should be a very easy FTP server install from the Windows 7 Features. This walkthrough is great...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrzNPq-B6Ts

Unfortunately, when I click on:

Control Panel
Programs and Features
Turn Windows features on or off
Internet Information Services plus sign
FTP server plus sign
FTP Extensibility check box is clicked which highlights all FTP server check boxes
Click OK.
Microsoft Windows then says Please wait while Windows makes changes to features. This might take several minutes.

Once installed, I click on:
Control Panel
Administrative Tools (click on View by: Large icons if you can't see Administrative Tools)
...and no Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager?

I have restarted the PC and removed unchecked the FTP server and restarted...what's happened?

A:FTP server doesn't show in control panel, administrative tools?

It looks like when clicking the
Web Management Tools and

Hi,
You could probably start by knowing for a fact that iCloud is located in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services\".

Another way could be reinstalling iCloud and then uninstalling it again.

I removed a solitaire program a day ago in Add/Remove in the control panel and it worked great.

Because I was having a problem with my computer I had to restore to an earlier date to correct the problem and that solitaire game reappeared in the add/remove program. I then tried to remove/delete it and a box comes up saying that program does not exist - so I can't delete it in the list.

How do I go about deleting that when it says it doesn't exist, but it is listed in the list?

Is there another Software program that could remove the icon from the Add/Remove section, because Add/Remove isn't letting me remove it.

(I have Windows Ultimate, 32bit)

A:Remove an icon from Control Panel

Hello Archdeacon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can look in the registry at the location below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace

Once there, look at each long number CLSID key in the left pane under NameSpace until you see the same TweakUI entry that displays in the Control Panel in the right pane for (Default). If you spot it, then you can just right click on and delete the long number CLSID key for it.

Hope this helps,

Hi

I installed a trial plug-in to a piece of software which I later removed using its own uninstall option.

I see that the item still appears in the Control Panel>Add or Remove Programmes and if I click to remove it tells me it cannot find the uinstal log file.

As the plug-in is now non-existent, is there a way to remove the entry in Control Panel>Add or Remove Programmes?

A:Add/Remove Programmes in Control Panel

Hi Eric

Sometimes when you uninstall a program, the corresponding Add/Remove entry is not removed. This may be due to incomplete uninstallation or the poorly designed uninstaller itself.

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe)
Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Make sure you backup the keys by exporting them to a .reg file.
Look for the name of the program with the orphaned entry.
Delete the entire listing for the software with the orphaned entry.
Close the registry editor.

Orphaned entries are those whose uninstallers are not available [but the registry entry might point to the actual uninstaller file]. You may also see errors like "missing install.log or uninstall.log" while trying to uninstall from Add/Remove Programs. The install.log/uninstall.log contains the uninstallation information about a program. When you remove a program from Add/Remove Programs, the log files come into play and remove the corresponding software entries from the registry and the files in the hard disk.

If the LOG files are missing, you may need to reinstall the application again (in the same path) and then try a clean uninstall again. In some cases, the application might be removed, but the entries may still exist in the Add/Remove Programs list. Orphaned entries are usually a result of a system restore rollback operation. Use the above method to remove the Uninstall entri... Read more

I'm on a friends computer and while getting rid of some unwanted software and spyware I noticed there is something in the Add or Remove Program list that's very bizzare. The list has 4 programs starting with the letter A. If I click below that, the area below it Highlights. I scroll down what seems to be about 8 feet (8 pages worth) of highlighted area then the list of programs continues. If I click sort by date, the area changes so it has nothing to do with the last A program.

I'm guessing this is some sort of malware, but have no clue how to find out what it is, and there is no button in the area to uninstall it. It doesn't load as everything in HijackThis is normal, and there is nothing in the process tree that is abnormal.

Any ideas what it may be or how to get rid of it ?

The DTS Audio Control Panel will not let me consistently use headphones. When I plug them in, there is no audio until I open the ACP, go to the Advanced tab, and Enable and then Disable the "Enable Multi-Playback Streaming" option. If I pause audio playback for more than a few minutes, I have to repeat this process. Sometimes this process won't work at all and I can't use headphones until I restart the computer. I don't care about software EQs and enhancements. I would love to not have to use this program at all and just use the built-in Windows audio controls, but I can't find any instructions about how to remove or disable this app. This is extremely frustrating as I'm using this computer for school, and when I pause lecture videos to write something down, my headphones will stop working until I go back into the ACP or restart the computer.

Hi. I've recently bought a Logik Webcam with Built in Microphone to replace my damaged built in HP Webcam in my laptop. I tried to install it and initially showed that it was succesfully installed. I searched for it and could not find it. I went to the devices and printers under Hardware and Sound (control panel) and that's where i found it. Problem is when i connect the device, it does not work. Every time i insert the CD, instead of the wizard installing, the dialog box just gives an option to 'are you sure you want to remove all the features of the highlighted text'. I've thought of deleting the icon from the devices and printers and don't know how as it is not available in the programs of the control panel.

I have had this problem on 2 Win2K computers now. It is caused somehow by USB installations. The latest was installing a HP 3570C USB scanner. The scanner software did not work properly after install, and when I went to the control panel (add/remove) [appwiz.cpl] the program has a large blank area where usually the programs show. (The message is "there are no programs installed on this computer") However, I can scroll down and see the programs listed, but if I click on any entry I get ""mshta.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. An error log is being created"

When I go to event viewer I get, "The application, mshta.exe, generated an application error. ...The exceprion generated was c0000005 at address 75B5EB55 (DllGetClassObject)"

Anybody see this before, Ideas?

All help greatly appreciated.

A:(Resolved) Add/remove In Control Panel

Hi Anne,
This usually occurs if the name in the Registry is more than 60 characters long. Once Windows encounters a name longer than 60 characters no more entries are shown. This should only be a problem if you want to remove the program at a later date. If it causes any problems you can change the registry entry. If you feel confident about editing the registry, I'll give you step by step instructions how to do it.
Regards,
Pilot.

When installing applications they appear to install correctly. An icon is created on the desktop and I can access the program.

In control panel under programs and features... the application is not showing up. I cannot uninstall the programs, because they aren't showing in programs and features to uninstall.

Yes, workarounds can be used to delete the program, but there is something wrong. The programs are not installing properly.

I ran sfc/ scannow as admin no problems indicated
After a couple hours messing with this:

Thought I should add this... When I right click on the installer/setup exe file and select to run as administrator the installer works and does show up in programs and features... Also, I can delete the program as well from programs and features.

I have never had to do this before even though I am admin...(in name mostly) unless I am willing to allow more vulnerability to my system by turning on all the time. Still having to run as admin does seem a bit much for installing programs. The worst part...the installer will run, installs the program, yet leaves off the ability to uninstall or change in the programs and features page of control panel

I have made the mistake of running adware and spybot S&D without checking for uninstall programs in the control panel. They removed the spyware/adware, but didn't remove the uninstall programs and now with the files gone, it will not let me delete those files (or obviously run the uninstall). I was wondering if there is another way to remove those programs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:removing programs from add/remove in the control panel

what i reccomend is getting atleast the trial version of WinTools.net run it and within the program [a very user friendly interface] you can select the programs from the Add/Remove programs list and delete them from the list. this is also helpful for deleting files out of there you do not want uninstalled by mistake from that list i.e. windows updates

I had Intellitype pro 7.1 installed awhile back. I thought I had it successfully uninstalled, however I noticed the other day that it was still listed in Programs and Features in Control Panel. When I click on it there are no options for 'Modify' or 'Uninstall'. I did a search for Intellitype in my C drive and found only a couple of empty folders which I then deleted. This did not solve my problem though... I found a couple of Intellitype items in my regedit but I do not want to be messing around with my registry without knowing the consequences. How do I remove this program from my Control Panel and is it safe to delete these items in the registry?

(computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Intellitype Pro, computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Intellipoint Intellitype Pro Bluetooth, computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Intellitype Pro Auto Update)

Use this it will be gone

Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs, Solve uninstall problems

If it is gone or if it is not, use this after revo.

Leave your registry alone, use ccleaner and you will be ok

Always start with a system restore point, just in case.

Hello, I need help removing the SmartAudio application from my Control Panel. Every time I click on it, it says "failed to initialize" - I no longer have it nor do I need it. I would just like to get rid of it from Control Panel, it's not slowing my system down or anything, it's the OCD in me that is killing me seeing a non working function there! Thank you

I was able to fix it by installing the drivers and then manually uninstalling - if mod can delete this thread, that'd be great. thanks!

Please help, I can't remove Mirar from the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs window. When I try to uninstall it, Kaspersky pops up a window indicating it's detecting behaviour resembling PDM, then closes. The Mirar uninstall screen then opens, and it has me check off two boxes (details below) and then hit "next" but after that the uninstall screen goes blank. I close the screen, and Mirar is still in the control panel. Can someone help me remove it? I've already tried Spybot, MSSE, Kaspersky, etc., but none of them seem to detect it as a problem.

Here's the gist of the uninstall screen, followed by the Kaspersky report, and then the Hijack This log:

I'm looking for a fix my computer that has become suddenly problematic.

At present, I need your help or set of instructions for an issue or issues on the which I think began with a faulty Firefox upgrade.

1. I can't access the Add/Remove program listing in Normal mode, but Safe Mode.
2. I can't install latest Windows update. It keeps failing.
4. Ad Aware suddenly disappeared, and I can't reinstall because it says I'm missing a Microsoft Visual C ++ Runtime file which does exist when viewing Control Panel/Add/Remove in Safe Mode.

What would you recommend? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

A:Unable to Display Add/Remove in Control Panel

This is a core malware/spyware issue, and not a Windows XP issue. I'd have appreciated it not being redirected to this new location without having been addressed.

The problem began with what I think was a faulty Firefox upgrade.

I detected four or five Trojans using Malwarebytes in Safe Mode that weren't detected in Normal mode.

As noted above, I can't reinstall Ad Aware.

At the onset of this (these) issues, I scanned and removed and detected defected or corrupted files using Advance System Optimizer.

I'm running AVG now from Safe Mode.

HOW DO I REMOVE THIS PROGRAM AND MAKE SURE IT NO LONGER SHOWS UP IN MY CONTROL PANEL?

FYI.. It is software for an hp 4in1 device.

[<< See OS over here]

I've tried Googling my issue with not much success, so here goes: at one point I had a program called Uninstall Tool on my computer which added a shortcut in Control Panel. I have since uninstalled it but the Control Panel icon remains, I would like to remove it. My Googling has so far only come across ways of hiding Control Panel entries, but I would prefer to remove it altogether.

Is there a way of doing this such as searching a particular directory/registry entry of sorts where said entries (or locations of entries) are stored?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jon.

A:[SOLVED] Remove a Control Panel icon?

Control panel applets are usually stored in the Windows\System32 folder, and will have a .cpl extension.

Switch to Details View, sort by Type, scroll almost all the way down to the Control Panel item type, see if the tool is listed there.

There may be other related DLLs that were not removed, but removing the .cpl file if present should keep it from appearing in Control Panel.

While viewing a listing of installed programs on my laptop via the Control Panel, I noticed there were many Windows XP Software Updates (that had been installed). Question: could these updates be removed from the control panel, or would doing so remove them from my computer?

I know that removing other programs listed really does remove them, but as each item shows "installed on XXXXX" instead of the usual info about size, etc. thought I'd ask about removing the updates as they DO take up space.

Thanks for any assistance.

I was removing some programs and I noticed many listings for programs that are no longer on my computer. Some of these will give a "remove from list" message and will let you remove them from the list, but some will not. This isnt a terrible problem, but I would really like to know how to remove these that are cluttering up the list.

Thanks williac.

A:Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs question

Start/Run/RegeditHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UninstallEach program listed in Add/Remove Programs has a subkey listed here. Locate the correct subkey for the program in question and right click it, then select Delete. You may want to choose Export, first, to export the key to a REG file. The REG file can be re-imported if you find you made a mistake.See:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=247501
