Q: Dell Dimension 1100/b110 drivers

Hi guys.

I'm having problems finding the correct drivers for my friends Dell Dimension 1100/B110 .

He installed a new copy of XP and wiping everything he had but has lost a lot of the drivers and cannot get online or the display sorted.

I have listed the controllers required below. I went onto Dell website however the drivers page has 'page error' on every driver I try. Any help would be much appreciated.

Ethernet Controller
Multimedia and Audio Controller
SM Bus Controller
USB Controller
Video Controller - vga compatible.

Ross

Hello Everyone,
First time posting a question in these forums, I recently received a Dell B110 from a coworker, which seems intact on the inside apart from the HDD coming loose from its original place. Unfortunetely my collegue did not have the original power cord. Would anyone be able to tell me what type of power cord I need to buy, although I have a general idea of which type it is, I rather be 100% sure and not risk damaging the computer (if it still works of course). My ultimate goal is to either rebuild as a new computer or upgrade certain of its components, I'm trying to achieve a Comptia A+ certification and figured this would be a good place to start.
Also, can anyone tell me if and how I'd be able to view its information on an LED TV since for now I'm trying to avoid buying a monitor.
Thank you,
Wilmer

A:Dell Dimension B110

The Dimension 1100 / B110 uses standard power cord that all other computers use.
NEMA 5/15 standard Monitors also use this. The only issue would be not in the usa you may need to change the 110 / 220 switch on the power supply.
It only comes with analog VGA standard so if your tv does not have vga you arent going to get a 14 year old computer working on an LED TV.

After doing a clean install of my computer about a week ago (Windows XP Home Edition) my Dell speakers won't work at all, in WMP and on websites, such as YouTube. I installed the driver from Dell Support but they still don't work. Everything is plugged in properly and the green light on the right speaker goes on, but no sound at all comes out. NOTHING. I looked around in Audio settings and everything seems to be in place. The speakers aren't muted or anything. Could someone please help me solve this problem? Thanks!

A:Dell Speakers won't work on Dell Dimension B110

Check your connections again. We've all plugged in the PC connection to the wrong port from time to time.
If that's not the problem, uninstall the driver in Device Manager and reinstall.

I have two 16GB micro sata ssd's I'd like to try and get working inside a Dimension B110. I already have two sata to micro sata adapter cables so all I need to do is get it able to accept two sata drives. I'm looking at this "Ultra U12-40739 PCI Expansion Card - 2 SATA Internal Ports, 1.5Gbps, Raid 0, 1, JBOD" to get the two sata connections. But it says in the specs "Supports 66MHz PCI with 32-bit Data". Should it be backward compatible to work with the B110's 33MHz PCI interface? I'll also be buying two 4 Pin Molex power to 15 Pin SATA with a 5V to 3.3V converter cables. I'm also wondering how the RAID would be setup? Does the B110 BIOS have options for RAID? Will it show the option for RAID once the two ssd's are connected? Will there be some software utility I'll need to configure it? Not sure how that will work. Thanks for help!

A:raid with two micro sata ssd's in Dell Dimension B110?

Well I got the parts I needed and the ssd's are installed, but I can't get the drives to show up in "Computer" so I can use them as bootable drives. I'm using some sata utility tool and I'll add pics of what I see. How can I get them as bootble drives?

Is there a 25-digit product code for Windows XP on a sticker on the case, and is it for XP Home, XP Pro, or XP MCE?

After I ran the configurations and added the features I wanted they came out to exactly the same price!

Considering they are the same price, which is a better system?

Hi
I have a Dell Dimension 1100 that I would like to upgrade, if possible.. I need some advice on what exactly can be upgraded.

So far I have ordered (but not yet received) an extra 2GB RAM (1GB x 2)
Apparently that's all it can handle. So I assume if I wanted more RAM I'd need a new motherboard? And if I get a new motherboard what else will I have to upgrade?

I'd also like a bigger hard drive...but would that mean I'd need to replace the one it's already got? and put everything on the new hard drive?
At the moment it has 80 GB partitioned in 3, so the main part with all the programs on it is 20 GB and it has 1GB free.

As for price range, obviously the cheaper the better.

I have very limited knowledge of computers so I'd appreciate your patience with me.
Thanks in advance,
Mariana.

A:Advice on Dell Dimension 1100 upgrade

2GB is the max for that system. Installing a new motherboard can be a mixed bag with some dells. Sometimes they use proprietary connectors or parts that make replacing the motherboard difficult or impossible.

There appears to be only one drive bay for a hard drive although you could always put one where the floppy drive goes or into a free 5 1/4 slot with the appropriate spacers and cable if needed.

If you were going to replace the drive, you could use something like Acronis True Image to Copy the 3 partitions to the new drive and leave the remaining space blank or you could do something like clone the boot partition to a large partition and manually copy the data from the other 2 partitions to the remaining free space.

a dell dimension 1100 shuts down after about 10-20 seconds and wont turn on again until after 5 minutes or so.. i have added thermal paste to the cpu and replaced the memory...any other suggestions as to what i should do ??

thanks in advance

A:Dell Dimension 1100 shuts down after 20 seconds

Sounds like a heat issue, or a cpu that does not have adequate thermal paste between heat sink and cpu fan.
It is old enough to require a replacement hard drive... Good to test with another hard drive.
Is the screen any different when booted to SAFE MODE?
Do you have a separate video graphics card, or is it connected to onboard graphics?
Power supply could be failing. A power supply tester costs $10 to $15 on up to $15, but just exchanging with another power supply would satisfy that inquiry.
Other items to consider on that model: CMOS battery might be failing.
One simply test is to remove and reseat all cables. Consider replacing the EIDE 80 Connector 40 conductor cable from board to hard drive.
Clean all dust, dirt, fiber and hair out of the heat sink, if not already done.

Hi again.
I have a problem with my Dell Dimension 1100 desktop PC: when I run a graphics- and sound -intensive programme (by my standards anyway), the system restarts spontaneously quite regularly . It reboots with one of several messages that tell me to contact Dell and report the failure to reboot at the checkpoint named. The checkpoints are usually Imsi, Poke, PnP4 or (once only) Time. These mean nothing to me, and all attempts to advise Dell have failed. Maybe someone here can help.

Here are some details about my system:
(I'm a novice at this, so much of this info may be irrelevant).
I have a Dell "Dimension 1100" Pentium desktop pc running under MS XP-SP3.
The total Physical Memory is 1G, total Virtual Memory is 2G, and the Page File size is 2.41G (whatever all that means).
It uses a Soundmax Integrated digital sound system from Analog Devices. The graphics controller is Intel, with Radeon 9200 and Radeon 9200LE (Primary and Secondary) adapters. Drivers are ATI2dvag.dll (6.14.10.4299)
Can anyone help with this very frustrating problem please?

I am trying to boot from the floppy drive in a dell dimension 1100 running xp pro but the bios says:
"floppy drive (not installed)"  Not sure what to do.

Another option would be to boot from the optical drive, but the computer will not boot from a new cd (which works on other computers)  that has Ubuntu on it.  It will boot from the windows xp os cd though.  Is it possible to get older cd's so the computer will boot from them. If so, how do you find these older cd's.

Thank-you

A:"floppy drive not installed" in bios in dell dimension 1100

If the computer is an old one then it's possible it is non-PAE. Later versions of Ubuntu do not support a non-PAE CPU.

http://www.technize.net/how-to-check-if-your-processor-supports-pae-nx-and-sse2-for-windows-8-installation/

For the floppy problem open the computer and see if the connections are secure, both the data and power cables. Unplug the power cord. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Open the case and touch some bare metal first.

Are you trying to install Ubuntu on the computer? If the CPU does support PAE it is possible to boot Ubuntu from a USB flash drive using Rufus and the Ubuntu iso if the computer supports it. Attach the USB flash drive with Ubuntu and tap F12 at boot to select your boot device or make sure USB boot has top priority in BIOS.

May seem like a dumb question but I've never had a dell before and this one is getting on my nerves. Ok short story is I inherited this PC from my late mother in law. She had only 256 ram so I bought 1GB and installed it and it still ran slow. Now my 7 year old downloaded a trojan virus which made the PC run even slower. I got rid of the trojan and it still runs slow. I figured I'd be better off just reinstalling windows but everyone wants atleast $80 to $100 to do it, I'd figured I could do it myself but have no idea how to with a Dell. It's an Dimension 1100 Series, has Intel Celeron CPU 2.53 Ghz, DVD/Cd-Rw, that's about it. I've download the drivers and backed up important files just need alittle more info to get going. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I have Dell Dimension 1100 desktop computer that is seven years old.

The computer is turned on 12 hours per day and is used on average three hours per day, mainly to send / receive emails, surf the web, use Word Office software and stream movies.

Last year it went very slow, but after a service and the insertion of an additional 1GB of RAM, it regained a reasonable level of performance. It now has I.25 GB of RAM.

My question is this. What is the average life-expectancy of this type of computer.

Sometimes Dell offers a trade-in deal in respect of old computers (provided that they are functional).

If I could estimate when my present computer was almost at the end of its life, I might be able to take advantage of such a deal.

A:What is the average life-expectancy of a Dell Dimension 1100 desktop computer

I'm sure Dell have some life expectancy figures, but not likely in the public domain , even with an average time you need to know the distribution of those figures

so 10 years - you could have 50 untits fail at 5 years and 50 units fail at 10 years , would give a number of 7.5yrs - which would not help you really

i would say seven years old is a quite old for a PC these days , the mechanical parts , harddrive may likely to failure

I assume you have all the data backed up anyway

Not sure you would get much of a deal from Dell - but with the deals available this may not actually save you anything

Staples often have great deals - also Curry/PCworld are doing deals over Easter

Not really an answer to your question though

Hello Everyone,
I have a Dimension B110, which from a physical aspect is pretty much intact, aside from the HDD that somehow came loose. I'm in the process of buying a power cord an vga connection to see if it works period.
Would anyone be able to tell me if I would be able to use just the case to build a new PC? I dont mind spending some money on a new mobo or other peripherals. I'm studying for the comptia a+ exams and figured this would be a good way to practice.
Thank you,

A:Dimension B110

There are a number of issues you'll face, starting with the proprietary wiring of the front panel harness in the system, which won't work with anything but a Dell OEM board.  The next will be the fact that just about nothing inside the system is useable for building a new PC - the hard drive is the old PATA interface, and you won't find much if anything that'll take this type of drive now - the memory is out of date, and you'll need a new CPU (no new board will take a CPU that old).  Essentially, the keyboard, mouse and monitor are about the only salvageable parts in the system.
If you really want to build a new system for the experience, reuse those three parts -- the rest, recycle.

It's a p4 1.6ghz., 400hz, 478pin, ect. It supports all the technical stuff i think. Whenever i plug the power cable into the back the computer boots up on its own and the screen is just black. It says it's in a power save mode. The tower is in some power save mode too i think (an orange light on the front lights up). I've updated my bios to A01 and a lot of my drivers. Hello to all,   I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Home) on my Dell Dimension 2350. All went fine. Now I need to install the correct drivers. I have the Dell Resource disc and this is where the problem starts.    As noted elsewhere, after the reinstall the screen display of the Resource disc is as it would be in "Safe Mode". I was aware of this. As such, the Resource disc Search Criteria screen was a bit larger than the monitor screen. I was able to size it to fit the screen but this is really not the problem it is the following: The Search Criteria options I have from the drop down menus (on screen) are as follows:System Model:   All, Dimension C521, DXC061, Dimension DXP0G1, Dimension E521, DM061, XPS710    (Which, if any, do I pick?)Operating System: (I think I got this one)   All, Windows XPTopic:   (Maybe this one too)   All, Applications, Dell Diagnostics, Diagnostics, Drivers, Utilities   For the life of me I cannot figure out the exact drivers I am to install*. Windows XP only appears in the Operating System menu. I pretty much know the install order but as I said, I'm a bit confused about selecting the correct drivers from the disc. This computer is not connected to the internet at the moment so I can't download and use any sort of driver detection program. Other searches have confused me further and have provided no specific answer to this problem.&nbs... Read more

A:Installing drivers after Windows XP reinstall on Dell Dimension 2350 using Dell Resource disc

You need, in installation order:

Chipset driver
Video driver (depends on which video card)
Audio driver
Network driver (depends on which you have)
Modem driver, if you use a dialup modem

Go to the Support page and put in your Service Tag. It should give you the drivers you need. You can download them on any PC and copy onto a USB stick for installation on the 2350.
You only need the applications, if you actually use them (eg, Roxio, Jasc Paintshop, etc).
Then install your antiviral software and get online to the Microsoft Update site for all the patches and updates.
Keep in mind that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and they stopped releasing security fixes for XP and IE9, more than 1 year ago. So they're both full of security holes and put your personal data at risk.

Hello,

I am in need of drivers for a Dell Dimension 8110 tower. This is running XP Home. It is not very old, and using dell's support site I cannot find drivers for this model computer. I have been able to find drivers for most everything, except audio. I still need the audio driver. As I search the internet, I find that lots of folks can't find drivers for this model. If anyone has a clue as to where to get this driver, please let me know.

If I can't find the driver I will just pop in a sound card, but I would rather not.

Thanks so much!

A:Need drivers for dell dimension 8110

Just out of curiosity, I went to Dell Support, typed in your model number and it showed only 2 audio drivers...One for Sound Blaster Live and the other for Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (special sound card)....Curiosity peaked when I noticed that XP wasn't listed in the drop down box for Operating System...HMMM...I would download SIW and find out exactly what motherboard that I have installed (You are talking about onboard sound, right?) go to their web-site and see if they have what you need for XP...http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.htmlUsually through Dell Support if you type in the exact service tag number (or even better click on the button to let them find it for you) they should be able to direct you to the proper drivers for your make and model...Not always...But most of the time...Can be a frustrating process at times...

Does anyone know where I can find a .zip file that contains all of the drivers for the OS for Dell Dimension 8100 XP

A:Need XP Drivers for Dell Dimension 8100

No-

All Dells should have a Service Tag ID on back or underneath for notebooks.

Record that case-sensitive and take it here> http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Type in Service Tag (or let it be detected)

Takes you to the support pages for your Dell. Only problem is, there may be more than one, more than 2, hardware items in the 8100 product family...... the Service Tag does help though.

Some Dells came with their individual Drivers and Applications CDs.......not these days, though.

Most Dells, in fairly original condition, would have a DELL/Drivers folder.....on Drive C:

Here's your Network driver: ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R105478.EXE
But you may also need to download Windows XP SP3 and install that first: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4

I reinstalled my XP and now I need to reinstall my drivers which I know how to do I just don't know in what order to do it. Please translate for me. The Dell website says I'm supposed to install in this order for my computer:

1 - Desktop System Software
2 - Chipset
3 - Video Adapter
4 - Network Interface Card
5 - Audio Adapter
6 - Modem
7 - Wireless Network Card
8 - Mice, Keyboards

But when I put my driver cd in these are the ones listed for my computer:

Video Drivers
Audio Drivers
Controller Drivers
Miscellaneous Utilities
Modem Diagnosis
Modem Drivers
Network Diagnosis
Network Drivers
System Applications
System Dell Diagnosis
System Drivers
Video Diagnosis

In what order do I install these? (Note: if they don't label it exactly the same I don't know what I'm doing and they're confusing me here lol). So just looking at my drivers and the order in which they say to install can you tell me what order I install mine?

Thanks,
Jen

I have installed Windows 8 on my older computer, Dell Dimension 8400. Everything worked except my sound drivers. I checked the website and there were 2 available downloads for sound drivers. I downloaded both. One said incorrect hardware, so I assumed that that wasn't right driver. I tried the other, and first it said Wrong OS, so I ran it in recommended compatibility, then it said Incorrect hardware. So both drivers must be incompatible? But when I had windows XP before, it worked perfectly. Not sure why it doesn't now. I also tried using the driver searcher thingy. It was searching for like an hour, and when I tried to stop it, it wouldn't close. I had to force close it, and it found nothing.

Does anyone know how to resolve this problem? If so, please help me!

A:Sound drivers for Dell Dimension 8400?

did you insure they said for windows 7, and were for your machine? some machines from dell may have different drivers depending on the configureation of machine even if said machine has multiple OSs that were shipped with it, the hard ware its self may be slightly different example sound blaster hardware (creative) may have shipped with your Dell 8400 with XP but the machine with windows 7 may have been shipped with audio audigy (made up for this example) hardware so the drivers may be different in respects to that, or it could be generic intel driver(s) (i don't think intel makes sound cards but i could be wrong...

if you know the manufacture of the hardware components (say creative/sound blaster) i would go to the manufactures website and download the proper/appropriate drivers for the hardware on the windows 7 platform...

Hi there,

I recently bought Windows 7 as a christmas present to my parents so that they could upgrade their Dell Dimension 5000 to run Windows 7.
Original operating system was Windows XP.

I copied all files etc to an external harddrive and then I did a clean install of Win7.
Everything worked perfectly except for that Windows couldnt recognize the ethernet card and sound.

Because of that I couldnt connect to the internet so I took my laptop and began searching for drivers that would work for this system and Win7.
I started with Dells "Support and Drivers" section but they didnt have any drivers at all for Dimension 5000 that would work with Win7 - only for XP.

The only thing I found on Dells support section was a brief comment about this system:

Dell DOES NOT support Vista or Windows 7 on this model and you need, at a minimum, Vista drivers for the hardware devices (and you need Dell specific drivers for the sound). The 5000 was not a good candidate for upgrading to Win 7.
Try posting on the Windows 7 forum, maybe someone there will have something that will work, about your only hope.

And therefore I started an account here to see if someone have any suggestions.
This is the drivers needed: Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

Is it hopeless to try and find drivers or do I have to buy a new network card?

I also tried installing XP drivers with the compatibility mode for Windows XP but didnt work.

Hers where the "sort of " comes in. The speakers are working fine, but there is no mike. I have run the audio hardware (voice) test via control panel, but this is not even showing or recognizing a mike. Are there any settings I may have missed

Do you have a separate Sound Card in one of the expansion slots lower in the computer? Or are are you plugging your speakers into the onboard sound, higher up by the USB ports?
If you are using a Sound Blaster card then the Dell drivers will not work.
Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with Yellow flags? Under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers what is the name of the Audio Device? If you are using a Card, try removing it and get the exact model # of it. Then go to the Creative Sight and download the specific driver for that card. Creative Worldwide Support > Live! 24-bit

Hey - I'm working for a language school and responsible for maintaining their XP computers. I've had to reinstall the OS on a few machines and am having trouble with driver installation.

All sources tell me that the order of installation is important - however - I've downloaded the appropirate drivers and cannot tell which is which. The files have names like: R69300.EXE, R71710.EXE and do not indicate which is the chipset, ethernet, etc.

I would imagine that simply getting the ethernet controller working would be sufficient - a connection to the internet should help to troubleshoot from that point on but so far, I've been able to get everything BUT the internet to work.

Assuming I'd installed the drivers incorrectly, I've started over, reinstalling the OS but still cannot find a direct answer for the order of driver installation. Please do not direct me to the Dell website as they do not offer the information I am seeking.

Thanks in advance!

A:Proper installation of drivers for Dell Dimension 2400/Windows XP

and welcome to the Forum

When I download the drivers for a Dell, when I choose to save the file I rename it to Chipset.exe . . Video.exe and so on. That way I know what they are.

You always want to install the Chipset driver first . . the order of the rest do not matter a lot, but Dell does have a reccomendation for that.

You can go to the Dell support site, enter your Service Tag Number and download the drivers. Be sure to use IE and do not use the Dell Download Manager!

Just download the driver file, save it to the desktop and double click to install

On the list of drivers, click on the driver file:

Then be sure the "For Single File Download via Browser is selected and click the Download Now button here:

See this for the order they should be installed:

I recently formatted my Dell Dimension 4550, and have got it working pretty well except for one thing; the USB controller. I have no idea what it does because my USB ports seem to be working fine, and I can't seem to find the right drivers to get it working. Your dell should have a driver disk, run it and install all the drivers. If you don't have this disk you can download the drivers at dell.com, click on desktops then home and office, then the support tab on top. Then pick your model from the list and follow the instructions

I have just reformatted my Dell Dimension 4700 and re - installed the OS etc. Of course - because I am an idiot I forgot to back up the internet drivers. Now, under device manager I have yellow ?s under two ethernet controllers.

I do not know what makes these drivers are, and have tried to downlaod a driver scanner on a MAC and transfer via USB, however this just causes the MAC to freeze when copying - I don't know why.

Would the ethernet controller be from Dell - or how else could I get them...It is very frustrating and quitev urgent as I have work I need the internet for. the ironic thing is that if they were any other drivers I could go on the internet and download them!

I don't have any CDs with them on I don' t think.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - its becoming a real problem

Hello. I have a Dimension 1100 with the motherboard built in Intel Graphics card. I've bought a Club 3D ATI Radeon card (PCI) with 128 Mb memory to upgrade. I've put it in one of the PCI slots, attached the monitor cable to the new card and started the system up and the monitor goes black. If I switch monitor cable to the original motherboard graphics card everything's OK. Anybody have a clue what the problem might be? I've gone into BIOS and checked the graphics setting to be on Auto. I've also tried with another card (A Rage II 3D) and this works fine. Could it simply be that the new card is not working, or have I missed something out?

I have a Dell B110 computer with Windows XP. I just a bought another monitor and want to have two monitors setup side by side. The second one would be an extension of the first main monitor. The video card only has 1 hookup for the monitor. The only other hook up looks the same as the blue connector but is a male one instead of female. Any ideas on what I need here?

When I click on desktop and go to display properties, it gives me the option to have dual monitors but says I have to connect the second monitor before selecting that option. So the video card must support it??

Sounds strange? Your P.C only crashes on this download? Have you tried a clean up of your system and look for any conflicting software or it may require administer permission, but it should not re-boot your p.c without your permission. If the P.C crashes, not re-booting only highlights other problems with your p.c maybe even hidden from everyday use until you download something? Hope its just a duff file and not a virus, this is just guessing! No one can really help without more information about this problem may be it's a temporary fault with the site?

Socket 478 Celeron 2.53GHz.
512MB PC3200 RAM

Owner was complaining of being covered up with malware. When machine came in would not turn on. Front light flashing amber. Checked PSU +3.3V rail was at +2v.

Jumped PSU with tested good PSU, reset BIOS and could enter BIOS. Was getting FDD error, no FDD installed but disabled FDD in BIOS, message disappeared. All drives were turned OFF. Turned on all drives and BIOS recognized HDD and optical drive. (I still can't figure out initially why all the primary and secondary drives were initially turned OFF in BIOS).

Hello. This is my first post!
Here is my problem. I was given a died out Dell Inspiron B110 and has (had, more likely) no use. But now, I decided I am going to ya know, trick it out. So yeah, I can do the processor replacement and the hard drive replacement (someone please tell me the biggest processor I can fit in that B110 plz!), but my dad (yes, I'm a kid), says we can't replace it's graphics card (it's below 64MB, so I need a bigger one). I searched the 'net and found out I can replace it... but I just don't know how. Please tell me how to do it and the largest video card available for it.

Thanks!!!

A:Dell B110 Graphics Card Replacement

You are not going to "trick out" a Dell B-110 very much since this is a workstation machine.

About the best you can do would put in a 3 to 3.2Ghz. Pentium 4 processor (Northwood core only) with HyperThreading and add a PCI video card. The machine doesn't have an AGP or PCIe port + the power supply is only 250 watts.

if the machine currently has a Celeron processor you may open a can of worms trying to go to a Pentium 4 processor since it is most likely that you would need to change the processor heatsink for the Pentium 4 processor and you would need to get the heatsink assembly from Dell.

Here are the specs on the machine;

https://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim1100/en/SM/index.htm

Personally, I wouldn't spend any money fr minimal upgrades.

I did install it.shut down power, opened computer case, just picked an open slot and inserted card. I hooked everything back up and turned the computer back on. However, my computer screen will not light up. I re-checked cords..everything is in place. The computer is running, but the screen will not light up. Any Ideas??
Thanks..Jess

I am not sure, but I don't think you can just plug a card into any slot, you should replace the faulty one and put it into the same slot.
Also lightning could have fried more then just the network card.

I like to hear forum members opinion.
Just recently fixed the issue with Dell Dimension 4300, machine didn't power up when power switch pressed. I replaced original dead 250W PSU with new 430W dual fan and now comp is running. This PC is:
Intel 845 1.6 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 4 DMA channels and SDRAM PC133 512 mb of memory.
I also upgraded USB to 2.0, nice 128MB video card and some other goodies.
Now, I got another stock Dell Dimension 8100 without papers, but I check and this particular one has:
Intel 850 1.4 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 8 DMA channels and 384 mb RDRAM of memory. Nothing was done to this machine, and it also have original working 250W PSU.
What better to do? Keep the Dimension 4300 or remove goodies that compatible with 8100 motherboard, including fabricating in, new, dual fan PSU and excluding memory, I assume SDRAM and RDRAM not compatible and transfer to Dimension 8100?
Is 8100 machine more advanced then 4300? I know they both pretty old and outdated. I personally bough 4300 for my dad in 2001. Is 8100 was produced later? I see that CPU is Intel 850 vs 845..
Guys, opinion welcome.
Thanks,
Alex

I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. Hi, I am writing on this forum and believe me that you cannot imagine how desparate I am right now. I bought a brand new Dell and it arrived just a week ago, I have been using it for max 4 days.
From the beginning, the windows could not shut down properly. I could not install updates, windows did not work normally, I could not install other programs, many error reports, etc
Restoring windows to previous points did not help
So I decided to reinstall windows with my windows recovery cd. Since I do not have a cd drive on my Dell mini, I copied all files on a memory card, started windows setup and reinstalled windows. After I deleted original windows files, the setup told me that it does not have all important install files, but it was too late. After that I could start windows just once and that was the first and the last time. I cannot even start windows normally
I know that there is a secret partition for restoring windows to factory settings but after pressing F8 and choosing directory service restore mode I get this

Checking file system on C
the volume is clean
windows has finished checking the disk

and that is it, nothing else...
the screen stays like that forever

I am travelling right now, I do not have access to my recovery cd s, so this partition was my only hope. I will come back in three weeks and meantime I will desparetely need my laptop and I wish I could repair it somehow. Can anyone please advise me what to do? Please.....

I found 2 Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop's in a yard sale (they are identical). I got a good deal on them. 1 did work 100%. The 2nd one worked 100% but only on the battery. The 2nd one has a problem with the charging circuit, the 2nd laptop won't charge the battery and won't run off the ac power pack.
The 1st laptop the video has stopped working. There is nothing on the lcd screen or an external monitor. But the cpu fan turns, the dvd drive does it's thing on start up, I can hear the hard drive working and the lights are normal. I tried swapping out both the video card and the cpu from the 2nd Dell laptop. That didn't fix the problem. I ordered a 1100 mother board from Ebay (old stock, never opened, never used) That mother board arrived Sept 3rd. Still the same problem. Nothing on ether screen. But the rest of the laptop works. Considering the fact they are both 10 years old it would of been a much better deal if they were both in working order.due to the ages i really dont think either one is worth fixing and putting more money and parts into them might be a lesson in futility.i think all you can do is either save or sell the ram, hard drives, and cd drives and any other parts if they still work to maybe use in another dell laptop in the future.

Here's the problem: While using my Dell 1100 laptop, I opened three different programs at once -iTunes, FL Studios, and a Gameboy emulator- all of which use a decent amount of RAM. The laptop was running slow, but was fine other wise until I accidentally blocked off the fan, which caused it to overheat and turn itself off. Upon turning it back on though, I found that it only displayed the opening Dell logo and loading page, but didn't go pass that. The Windows loading page didn't even show. All that shows after the Dell page is a black screen with a blinking space bar. Something similar to this has happened before and a family member got it fixed for me. That family member isn't here though, and I could really use some help with this. Anyone?? Thanks in advance!

A:My Dell 1100 either overheated or crashed doing more than my RAM allows

even though it overheated... it shounds like your hard drives bad... just because it wont continue to boot... since its a dell... turn the computer on and hit the F-12 key that will bring up a boot menu, then select either hard drive diagnostic, or diagnostics and it will go from there... should help you narrow down your problem

A:Problems with dell inspiron 1100

Are you getting any notices about battery power? Are you plugged into A/C when this happens? How about the bios.....have you checked in there for power management settings? When you power it back up, does it go into full boot or does it come up as if it's been in hibernation?

Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy a laptop and am struck at these 2 options:

Dell Inspiron 14z: (key features)

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i5-3317U processor (3M Cache, up to 2.6 GHz)
8GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
14" High Definition LED Display (1366 x 768) with Truelife
500GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD and 32GB mSATA SSD
AMD Radeon HD7570M 1GB

Vs:
HP Envy 14t-1100 (key features)

3rd generation Intel Core i5-3317U(1.7 GHz) + 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M Discrete-Class Graphics
6GB 1600MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
500GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
14.0" diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366 x 768)
32GB mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache

So guys which one will you suggest to me? I need this laptop for programming, running programming softwares, multitasking, and gaming. Can BF4, Call of Duty 4 and other such games be played on these laptops?

Thanks

I dont know much about hp computers but as far as dells for gaming and other things theres the xps, ademo, and alienware that will handle what you are looking for but they arent cheap.

Dear friends, I have a laptop that I would like to format c drive I have no Idea how to do this, if I insert windows xp cd on drive it does not read it. please if you can tell me how to format and load a clean version of windows xp it will be appreciated Thank you.

A:Help Formating Dell 1100 Laptop

To boot from a Windows XP CD, you'll need to make sure your BI/OS options are set to boot from CD. Press F2 on startup to enter the BI/OS settings, and look under System for Boot Sequence. Alter the options there so that the optical drive is selected, then exit the BI/OS (saving the settings as you leave) and restart the machine and press F12 to show the Boot Menu, then select your optical drive from the list (making sure the CD is in the drive ).

This is hopefully a very easy question, I would like to reinstall my operating system to factory condition, on my Dell Inspiron 1100. Like how to format my harddrive, and than what order to re'install my utilites. If somebody would point me towards some documentation I would appreciate it. thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 reinstall

What you should do if your going to do a fresh install is integrate your xp cd with service pack 2, it is the most stable way to install WindowsXP (sometime installing SP2 later causes crashes, but integrated SP's on disk does not)

read about that here:
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...p2-bootcd.html

If you dont want to try this, you will need to remember to install all service packs to protect your computer (it helps to copy them to a cdrom and install them offline to protect trojans from entering your system)
You will need you DELL backup disk
You will need to change your BIOS to boot from CDROM (as first boot device) then Harddisk. *you can enter your BIOS by pressing the F2 or Del key as it starts.
Once you've set the boot order, follow this:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and boot computer. You will see aprompt to "press any key to boot from cd" (press anykey now) WIndows will load drivers etc, just wait a minute for a blue screen
2. At the Welcome to Setup page, press ENTER to continue.
3. Press F8 to accept the Windows XP Licensing Agreement.
4. If an existing Windows XP installation is detected, you will be prompted to press R to repair it. (do not choose repair) continue with install.
5. The screen will now list all existing partitions and un-partitioned space for each hard disk. Use the cursor/arrow keys to choose where to create the new partition. Press D to delete the existing partition. If you pres... Read more

I have a dell Inspiron 1100 - Works great - I reloaded the O.S (Windows Xp Home - and updated the drivers - I believe that I update a BAD BIOS file - and the comes up with BLUE SCREEN. I have powered it off - Put the O.S. Disk in the drive - and rebooted the system. It takes me thru the steps for loading the O.S. Reads the hard drive - and starts loading all the needed drivers - and then fails . I suspect BAD BIOS. How can I get the BIOS bad to factory setting. I have searched the internet - and most of the blogs suggest the following below. Any confirmation or suggestions on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciatd.

DELL Inspiron 1100
BIOS - A32
Hard Disk:: 30GB
Memory: 1GB
DVD -RW/CDRW
O.S - Windows XP Home

You may find the resetting the bios to the default using the jumper or removing the cmos battery will fix that.

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 won't bootup

Well if it was a bad Bios flash then your computer would not boot up at all. What you need to do is Post what the bluescreen says, usually toward the top there is a file or error that will show what the issue is.

But my guess without knowing any more info is that it could be Bad memory stick in your computer. If you have more then 1 stick remove one and try to reload windows again. If you still get the same error then put that stick back in and take out the other ram stick and see if you get the same error.

post back with results.

This Dell Inspiron 1100 (os xp pro, a 1gig cpu around 1gig of main memory and a 250gb hard drive) is working but it offen will reboot it self, prog's lockup and shut down and both Firefox and Internet Explorer will crash and shut down. I need to fig out why it crashes and reboots it self. I have a spare 1100 laptop that I can take spare parts off of. The motherboard in the 2nd laptop is dead. I know it is an old laptop but this is what I have to work with in a portable setup to take with me until I can afford to replace it with a newer laptop.

This should be the audio driver for it.

Your goal is to get Windows XP up-to-date and all devices working before you install a bunch of programs and extras in that computer.

Hello there. My sister recieved a Dell Inspiron 1100 for her graduation about four years ago and she's having problems with it after never mistreating it noticably. M'kay... the problem is that when the laptop is turned on and she attempts to put in her password to get on her computer the keyboard seems to recieve input from nowhere. No keys are being pressed, yet the text box for her password is automatically filled and it won't recognize any keys when they are actually pressed. Also, the mouse seems to do about the same... It won't be touched and it would creep up the screen or disappear completely. There are other times when her laptop won't even give a visual what-so-ever.

If anyone knows of anything that can be done I'd really appreciate any helpful advice.

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 issues...

Hi there. you dont say whether this happens at windows logon or whether it is a system (bios based) logon. but anyway it sounds to me like virus activity and you should run a virus recovery program that boots from from a CD and then when you get the system started run a full system scan with updated antivirus software.

Sorry for rain you a bad news.

Dell laptop has a locked CPU and FSB, which you can't do anything about it.

There is only thing you can do is to overclock video card. That it.

Sorry to let you know.

P.S. There is a program that allow you to adjust the FSB and voltage just little bit. I recommend you to leave the voltage as default, or you will risk to lose the laptop.

Hi everybody,

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 (Celeron 2.4) with 256MB RAM (two 128MB sticks). A friend of mine gave me a 512MB stick and I happily thought that I finally would be able to upgrade the memory of my old friend. The new memory I got is:

Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 266MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2.5 200 Pin SODIMM
(KVR266X64SC25/512)

However, when I install the new memory the laptop won't start! The LED blinks for 5-10 seconds and then the computer turns off. When I put back my old memory everything works fine again. I've tried it with the new memory alone in both of the empty slots and also together with one of the two 128MB sticks. I've tried all possible combinations but the laptop simply doesn't start whenever the 512MB module is installed. What's going on? I thought this memory was compatible with the Inspiron. Am I wrong?

Cheers,
Ma

I have been wondering for a while that my Inspiron 1100 has been running a little hot - the fan is always on and running hard even when the system is idle.

I downloaded a temperature monitor which gives me a HD0 temperature of 67degrees C which seems quite high - especially as the default setting was for an alarm to sound at 60degrees C.

My system doesn't shut down due to overheating, and I have checked the fan and heat sync air holes on the bottom and side and they don't look blocked with dust.

I have heard a few suggestions about dealing with the problem but to be honest I have never had any experience with this before so unsure how to proceed.

Suggestions have included everything from buying compressed air and blasting the heat sync and fan and using cotton swabs to clean it, right through to taking it apart and adding more thermal grease between the CPU housing and the heat sync.(i have never taken my laptop apart before)

I would appreciate any and all help on this issue

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 which came with XP Home. I installed Windows 2000 Server on this laptop. It worked fine for around 2 years. One fine day, the OS would not boot, giving the error message something like "Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" (I'm not sure about the exact error but it was something like this). I called Dell (because the warranty had expired, I had to pay them $50 before a human being would speak to me and even then they put me on hold for more than an hour!) and they asked me to use a Windows XP backup CD to wipe out the hard drive. But the system would not recognize the CD in the CD Drive. Dell said the CD drive might be bad. I replaced the CD drive with a new one but problem did not go away. I then bought a new hard drive but it was different from the one inside the laptop (I didn't do much research before buying a new one). I then plugged the old hard drive back into the system. But since then, whenever I turn on the laptop, it comes on for a second or so, then turns off automatically and the screen stays black all the time. It doesn't even show the boot options. I got really frustrated and bought a new desktop and am in the process of installing Debian GNU/Linux OS on it. However, any help in salvaging my laptop would be highly appreciated. Ok this is the mother of all problems,

My Inspiron has suddenly stopped working. By this I mean when it's turned on all the LEDs light up as they should but the screen is completely dead. I don't think it has something to do with the screen because I have tried connecting it to another monitor but nothing shows because the keyboard doesn't execute what I press. (the caps lock light doesn't light up when I press the key if that means anything). Well that's all about I can tell you that I have done. I tried running just with the battery reinstalled the battery tried using an external keyboard but nothing happened. Another thing is that I used to keep it on alot maybe even for several days I don't know if that might have killed an internal battery even though it used to sleep and I only had it for a year.
any Ideas?

Portables are not like Desktops , in that it is not good to leave them on for days at a time .I realize they shut power levels down ,If the APM is set right.
If you are not seeing any screen including boot screens ,just call Dell and make arrangements to send it back for repair (Sounds like your under Warranty)

I just got in a cousin's computer today to look at. It's a Dell Inspiron 1100 that wasn't powering up.

Here's what I've observed:

1) The AC to DC converter light comes on, meaning that I'm getting power as far as the transformer.

2) Removing the battery doesn't help

3) Absolutely no LEDs on the laptop come on, and no fans, etc. start.

Here's what I've tried:

1) We had a similar problem at work the other day, a lady brought in her Dell Inspiron that wasn't getting power from the DC port...the battery was powered however, and we had a few mintues of battery left to confirm that the laptop was working. We opened up the case to find that a copper connector that connects the port to the mobo was detached, we soldered it back on and it worked fine.
Thinking this could be similar, I opened up the case (and with almost 30 screws, that took a while) and saw that everything looked fine.

2) I've tried checking to make sure all the buttons work, and they do. There was nothing blocking the buttons when I opened up the case to look.

Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it? Or should I just tell him to buy a new laptop?

Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 gets no power

So you have reated all the things, like Ram; keyboard so forth (it sounds as though you know generally about all this)

You could also try reseating the CPU, but once this is done, you will then need to apply new thermal paste to fix the HeatSink again.

If you're really deetermined, you could remove the motherboard from the case fully, and benchtest it.

Hi

I have a Dell Ispiron 1100

It won't turn on

I press the power button and if there is no AC power attached
the lights light up while I press the button, but no start up

When the AC power is attached, I don't get any lights at all

It's been happening for a while

I used to flip it over and pull out the battery, then replace it
and try again, after a few times it worked

Then I realised that just by opening the screen and trying it, then closing
the screen, then opennng and trying again... after a few times it would start

(are there any wires that would be affected by that??)

Once it started, so long as I left it plugged in, and the screen open it would always restart first go

I also think, that when it was unplugged, closed, etc so long as I started it agin fairly soon, it worked

I've just been overseas for a week in a colder climate and now I can't seem to get it started at all

I've tried with battery in, with battery out, AC in AC out

Any help would be much appreciated

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 won't turn on

Dell Inspiron won't turn on

We have a professor at our university that turned in a Dell laptop with exactly the same symptoms!

Really, with the battery alone installed, the lights flash momentarily when the power button is pressed. If the charger is connected (or the charger alone): no lights
(Just like Christoff)

The machine won't start up and there was some story about how it died last time the lid was closed. We are suspicious of a faulty lid interlock that is keeping the laptop in hibernate (or some deep, permanent sleep).

Another theory - Does anyone know if these have an internal power fuse, such that the external power brick isn't actually getting DC into the main board or charging the installed battery? We can't find any info about the power distribution or a schematic.

So, I'm heading off to college in about a week, and I decided to dust off the ole gamecube, intending to use it with one of my lcd monitors. I also found an old adaptec 1100 hiding in the basement (composite to usb). I'm running windows 7, and of course Adaptec decided to not supoort any of the video capture hardware for vista/win7.

Installing the drivers in compatibility mode fails.

I tried installing the drivers in the "windows xp mode" within windows 7, which I'm guessing is doing some sort of emulation. The drivers work fine, and I'm able to run a game in a tiny window no problem. The issue occurs when I scale the image to fit the majority of the monitor. It gets consistent "spikes" in delays and a blaring delay. I'm guessing this is something like a cache getting too full? I suspect it's related to the "windows xp mode."

I'm also guessing it will work fine if I dual booted, but I'd much rather not setup a whole new partition. Plus a lack of windows xp cd's is problematic.

I did a bit of research, thinking maybe some cool guys may have hacked together some drivers. I found this, and sent him an email, but two weeks later, I have yet to receive a reply.

Also, I just came across this but I lack the knowledge to make much sense of the information provided. The program for windows that they link to is able to see the usb device, but the drivers I tried to install with it didn't do anything. A... Read more

I had to partition my HD in Dell Inspiron 1100 while at school a few years ago into Windows XP and Linux (20 GB in each). However, now I need additional space for my windows work and can pretty much remove the Linux partition and get an extra 20 GB. I had used Partition Magic for the partition. Can anyone advise what would be the most convenient way to remove the partition? I can lose my Linux data but not the Windows data.
1. Do I need to use Partition Magic for removing the partition? Is there any forced way to just add the 20 GB from the Linux partition onto my Windows XP partition?
2.Should I use a backup and restore sw (say from Norton for restoring the Windows files and system back)?

Would appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Abhi

A:Remove partition on Dell Inspiron 1100

You can use anything to delete the partition. WinXP does not have anyway to extend the windows partition into the available space though, so you'll have to use Partition Magic, or something similar, to expand the Windows partition.

If you don't have Partition Magic anymore, there are free programs that do the same but I don't have any links nor have used any so you'll just have to search, or someone else may have a recommendation

You should be able to do this without losing any of your Windows data but it's always a good idea to have a backup just in case.
If you need to save any of the Linux data (and don't have room on the Windows partition, or a way to back it up), Partition Magic (and probably other programs) will let you shrink the Linux partition and expand the Windows partition a bit at a time, then you can transfer the data from the Linux partition to the Windows partition before you delete it.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

Hi i have a Dell Inspiron 1100 that i use as a secondary computer. Just recently i formatted the hard drive and re-installed windows. It was fine for a while, and it still is, but recently the battery light flashes as if it is ultra low... Green, yellow, yellow, yellow, yellow, green. It only is supposed to do this if it is really low battery. i can't even tell if it is charging cause that light sequence never stops. your help is appreciated!
