XP SLOW. Tried Many things like you have suggested

Q: XP SLOW. Tried Many things like you have suggested

I am ready to try the SDfix again...Problem is I can not get into Safe Mode. Keeps getting hung up on a process as it is listing all. I will write it down next time, It may help someone explain it to me.

Also What setting (& where can I locate it) may cause my WMP 11 to make my speakers sound busted? I have installed a new sound card (not the prob). I have installed at least 10 different media players this week to just see what I liked. In all of those the sound was fine. Songbird, Winamp,VLC, Itunes, Monkey,Foobar2000, K-lite, Qtime, MusicMatch & a few others. I really like the layout and fuction of WMP 11. Any Suggestions on how to fix my sound problem. Any thoughts on GOM Player, SMplayer, KMPlayer, AIMP 2,...I must have ripping & burning ability. I have read good things about AIMP2 think I will try it tonight.
Thanks in advance for your help

Everything was running fast and fine, and then "bam", things started slowing down. Going from page to page is like dialup. I have XP Home and from time to time when one user logs off, the screen goes black and we have to turn off and restart. I have run Spybot, Norton, CWShredder, etc. I also checked BlackViper, but I would rather have someone take a look a my Hijack before diving into my registry. The only thing I have installed in the last 3 weeks was the America's Army game. I uninstalled two days later.

Thanks,

My computer has been running slow for about a month now and I can't figure out why. I have to restart my computer to make it run normally and then after a little bit it just slows down again.

Some things I have tried to fix this problem:

I have updated all my drivers.

I have cleaned the hard drive

I have defragged the disk

I have defragged and cleaned up registry errors

I have scanned my computer with malawarebytes and ESETnod and have used combofix

I have opened the computer case and cleaned it out

Still after all these things my computer still slows down and has to be restarted all the time.
Attached is my system specs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, guys.

I've had the Dell computer a few years now, pre-installed with XP. I clean it regularly with Spybot and Adaware, and I defrag and do as much as I can to keep it clean. I do download a lot of stuff (hardrive probably 75% full), but recently it has started slowing down, especially at startup, when it takes a few minutes just to get to the sign in screen. Difficult to explain, but I just know it's slowing down.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If so, I suppose I'll just stick with MAC filtering. Oh, by the way, I have a Linksys 802.11g router and a USB 802.11g adapter on another computer. The computer with the router has McAfee Personal Firewall, the one (mine) with the USB adapter has ZoneAlarm. Thanks in advance for any help.

I feel my computer is a bit slow. I run WindowsXP. I don't want to do a system recovery and start from scratch. I was hoping for some general tips that might help speed things up.

Under the Windows Task Manager, there are only 8 processes running under Owner (which I think is a good thing).

WindowsXP also seems slow when it starts (which is partly due to AVG running it's opening scan, which I generally terminate and have it run later). I know AVG is likely intrusive and slows things up, but, I feel it does a good job.

The stats I know of are below. also it's a Gateway, got it in 2004. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

1.8 ghz
384 ram
19 gig hd (1.5 free, probably 60% is music/photos)

A:WindowsXP, things seem to run slow

Hello Inindo

Here is a checklist to work your way through

Also you are really short of RAM. XP will run much better on 512MB and will like 1GB even more. Check how much RAM your system can handle.

I have Vista and 2gb of ram, and things typically run at a good speed but there are some random things and I don't understand why they are so slow. For example, if I right click on the desktop, it takes about a half second for the menu to pop up. If I keep right clicking it takes just as long every time and doesn't get any faster.

And sometimes it will take like 15 to 30 seconds for a program like itunes to start up, yet when it has started it runs very smoothly.

My memory usage is 60% and CPU is pretty much at 0. Why do I have these problems?

Hi,

If I knew what was going wrong; I'd fix it. As I don't I've posted the issue here in the XP section, as everything I have done so far indicates some kind of software problem.

A week ago (thereabouts) Windows XP start-up was much slower than usual. The start-up screen takes twice as long, the login screen is unresponsive for some time, and once logged-in it takes much longer than it should.

There are a host of other issues. The audio is regularly distorted / skipping - it's especially noticable at login where that interminable jingle is really garbled. iTunes is much less responsive than usual.

It seems to be in general though, that processes run slower and stutter. It's just particularly noticeable with audio.

In addition, security centre now does not detect AVG nor Sunbelt firewall.

When the first slow login occured, I was groaning - I had the /exact/ same issues, exact same symptoms (down to security centre then not detecting zonealarm) around January. I tried a host of things, but in the end I reinstalled windows.

I really don't want to reinstall windows (unless someone can convince me I can easily repair it from an SP1 cd), but have tried similar things as before, and have got no where.

So far, I have:
- Scanned for viruses and spyware (AdAware and SpyBot and AVG)
- Uninstalled anything I installed the days leading up to the slow-down.
- Uninstalled and reinstalled audio drivers.
- Selective startup via msconfig
- Tried a system restore to... Read more

My son has mucked up his computer. I won't even tell you how. I've done two scans with AVG. One in safe mode. It seemed to find some things and 'heal' them. But am still having issues. Running slow, things like right clicking on my computer will result in an attempt to install a cd burning program that I can't uninstall. There are a couple of programs including MS Works I can't uninstall. I also noticed that when I saved the HJT results, I was unable to locate them when I got out of safe mode. There is about only 13% disk space remaining so I have been unable to run a defrag. I've also run a HJT and results are below with the AVG results. Thanks for the help in advance.

I have so many problems with this computer I don't even know how to tell you all of them. My home page has been changed several times. It takes like forever to reboot. Sometimes my computer locks up and the only way that I can get it to work again is to turn off the power, which I can't believe is too good for it. This is a relatively new computer, my daughter n law got it for us last year. I have over 250 GB of free space, so I don't have a lot of programs on here. We have dial up which is extremely slow, so we don't surf that often. We use this computer mainly to view videos and pictures of our grandchildren. Sometimes it takes quite awhile to switch between programs. I ran that DDS scan thing and have included that log with this post. I also included a HJT log that I ran a couple of days ago. Recently developed a problem with very slow shutdown and startup both. With no programs running, it takes about a minute and a half to shut down, about two to boot up, and about five to load programs after I select user. During the program load, the hard drive is running like crazy, with Task Manager showing a lot of use by explorer.exe, ctfmon, and one svchost entry. At times, one of the two latter ones will jump as high as 98% usage. I tried disabling every startup program with Task Manager while disconnected from the net, deleted restore points, defragged, and the delay improved only slightly. In addition to AVG a/v, Spybot, and Adaware I have run CCleaner and the full version of Registry Mechanic with no improvement. I have gone down the HijackThis list using the cheat sheet in this forum and deleted a couple of suspicious items, that didn't help either. On the attached startup list, I have no clue what the fourth item with no command listed might be. I have recently added an external hard drive for storage and backup and a new monitor, fwiw, but the problem seems to have started at some point after that. The web sites in the HJT log are all legitimate. Any ideas appreciated.

Hi,

First, let me thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

My pc is very slow and strange things are happening - like Windows Installer little pop up window keeps coming up asking me to insert disks to install various programs (programs that have been on my pc for a year or more).

I ran Cleanup40.exe and also went to Microsoft Updates and tried all available updates, but it was unable to update "MS .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1"

So then I hopped on this forum, and followed your 5 steps before posting. I hope I've done everything correctly.

I've noticed when my machine up and running for a few days, things appear to slow down until a reboot is performed.

Most notably:

1) Time from Explorer start to a home page painting
2) Time from empty trash request, to confirmation appearing
3) Time to open windows
etc.

When I reboot, everything gets speedy again.

I originally thought the web issue (#1 above) could have been caused by temp files, cookies, etc, but I've cleared that stuff out and it's still slow until the reboot.

Any ideas? Is there a memory leak somewhere?

Thank you!

Hi Cookiegal. We have finished with the post Windows errors after factory reset.
The laptop is running great.
The desk computer is running very slowly. One of the things that was missing the other day was my RoboForm toolbar. Can't remember what else. I am concerned that this computer may be infected too as I have sometimes connected to files on this computer via the laptop, using home network I would think.
Here are the requested scans.

I was very pleased with the help I received today for one of my laptops I thought I would have you all take a look at the HJT log for my desktop which is also having troubles although not as serious as my laptop was. I realize I have a lot of crap on this computer and I can get rid of much of it.

I am going to go through the normal Ewido / Activescan options now to check that.

Thanks for the assistance.

My system is running very slow, including when talking on Msn. There is up to a 10 second delay on there. Also very strange thing happened today, when I logged out of facebook, instead of my email address in the log in box it was someone else`s email in there who I have never heard off.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 14:42, on 2008-10-25Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18241)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\RTHDCPL.EXEC:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exeC:\Program Files\O2\bin\sprtcmd.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\BillP Studios\WinPatrol\winpatrol.exeC:\WINDOWS&... OK, how does this site work? I posted this 10 days ago and it says above in the guidelines do not bump your post as its a first come/first served basis. Well I have seen people post after me and be dealt with before me. Maybe you should keep to your guidelines then people like me would not have the need to bump our posts.

Hi everyone, I'd really appreciate it if someone could take a look at the Deckard and Kaspersky scans I just ran. My computer has been running slow for a little while now and I kind of got used to it but in the last few days one or two things have made me wonder if this is due to a virus: the screen has locked a few times and it actually went golden(!) a day or two ago until I closed it down by unplugging it. An error message always stops the Panda Rootkit scan 17% of the way through it's scan. I tried to re-run the Deckard scan but this also terminated early with every attempt...While finishing that last sentence the screen went black and the computer shut itself down. (After re-starting Firefox miraculously allowed me to return to this post with nothing lost). So if anyone can help I'd be really grateful. Thanks in advance,KDeckard's System Scanner v20071014.68Run by Keith Merrick on 2008-05-21 20:18:24Computer is in Normal Mode.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- System Restore --------------------------------------------------------------Unable to create WMI object; The operation completed successfully.Backed up registry hives.Performed disk cleanup.-- HijackThis (run as Keith Merrick.exe) ---------------------------------------Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 20:19:49, on 21/05/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16640)Boot mode: NormalRunning process... Recently my laptop has started acting very slow. It's been quite gradual so I can't put my finger on what made it go slow.
Also, my built in cam and built in speakers have stopped working. They'll work for the first 10 minutes of the laptop being turned on, then they just won't work what so ever.
Some programmes won't uninstall either, coming up with various error messages.

Any help would be appreciated so much! Thanks.

Ravina.

I have gone thru and made sure this computer I am working on is clean of any Virus's and Spyware. It is.

This computer is Windows XP and had 128 ram. I only had another 64 to put in. That made the computer faster.

Here is where i am confused as to why this is slow.
IE will come up and take about 10 seconds to retrieve the Homepage.

This is on a Cable Modem now. The user of the computer has DSL.
If I go to another page it seems like it loads the page slow.
The pictures on the page load slowy. You can see them coming in, in sections.

Does anyone know anything to check.

A:Things to check for Slow Internet

128MB of ram is the minimum for Windows XP even if that say you can use 64MB. You really need 256MB, it runs the best
at 512MB.

Hello, I am thankful for any help.

I have something suspicious on my computer that is found repeatedly by HJT and CC and I wonder if it is why it is running slowly.

It always begins with a string of letters such as HKCU or HKLM.

The log is attached. I am running Windows XP Home Version.

If anyone sees anything suspicious I would appreciate it if they could point it out. Even running good spyware and firewalls has not stopped some bad things from hopping onto my computer lately. And all I do is go to good sites, including little sewing sites and free clipart sites. I don't go anywhere off-color.

I don't play any VAIO music, yet this stuff is also on my computer. I wonder if I need it on there. The computer is not all that roomy.

Thank you.

I am working on my mothes HP system. It's a 500Mhz with dial-up. She asked me to look at it because it seems to work fine (for a 500Mhz) when she works on stuff locally but, when she dials-up to the net...things start bogging down real quick.

I have performed the following so far (and it is isolated from the net...I'm using my laptop to send the logs from her system...it's sitting next to me):

- Removed Norton Antivirus 2002 (I'll be installing AVG when it's cleaned up)
- Installed, updated and ran CWShredder - nothing found.
- Installed, updated and ran Ad-aware SE in Safe Mode (110 hits, 11 casuals - all cleaned).
- Installed, updated and ran Spybot S&D (2 hits found and removed).
- Installed latest version and ran HJT - log follows.

Please check and see if there is still some bad guys on her system.
Many thanks!

PS - I would also like to remove as much of the YAHOO! garbage (IE search/tool bars, etc.) as posible...there does not seem to be a straigh forward way to do this.

A:Once connected to the net, things get REAL slow...help please.

No baddies really poking thru there. Try these two tools and report back, if it persists.

Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

My Dell W/64 computer has become very slow - Takes nearly 6 minutes to boot fully, with CPU running at top all that time. There are some 950 locked files that have shown up, and even when computer has been going for 30 minutes or more nearly everything is sluggish.

I am reluctant to buy into one of these "speed up" web sites and anxious about leaving it with a service department where I have no information nor discussion. I will appreciate some guidance. Thanks

A:Strange things and very slow computer

Probably the surest and quickest way to determine whether hardware or software problem, and to fix if software, is to reinstall Windows fresh or "recover to factory defaults."

If you are not ready to do that try uninstalling AVG and run the AVG Remover.

Run a disk check and then defrag the partition on which Windows is installed.

I may not have any other ideas on this, but others probably will.

first, I have no idea if this computer is infected so if this post needs to be moved, please feel free. I wasn't sure where to ask this.

I noticed a few weeks ago that every time I left my netbook idle and come back to it, it takes longer to move around(on internet, using Outlook) and I end up rebooting and then it's fine again until I let it sit again. I have tried to change when the screen saver (or lack thereof, it just goes dark) initiates but it's not recognizing that at all. I changed it in control panel to start screen saver after 120 minutes and chose a particular screen saver. that screen saver does not initiate at all. it just goes dark after about 5 minutes of being idle.

I cleaned up some temp files and removed some software that I'm not using and also ran defragmenter a couple of weeks ago. this helped for a few days. I just ran defragmenter again today and it helped for a few hours and I just rebooted after leaving it idle for a few hours.

it's an Acer netbook running Windows 7. I ran malwarebytes anti malware and Avira anti virus scans and those were clean. any ideas on what else I can do/check?

thanks much.

Hi, tobyo! I'm going to try to help you out. This may or not be malware, but I'll have to exhaust as much as I can before I can tell.TDSSKillerI need you to run a scan using TDSSKiller.Download TDSSKiller from here, and save it to your desktop.Double click the file to launch the program. Once the program starts, click Start Scan. Don't change any default scan settings.Once the scan is finished, you'll find a log in your root drive (usually C: ) that will start with TDSS in the file name, please copy and paste it into your reply.MalwarebytesI need you to run a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.Double-click the MBAM shortcut on your desktop to open MBAM.Click the Update tab, and check for updates. If a new version of MBAM is included in the update, follow the prompts and install it.Once the program is done updating, select the Perform full scan option on the main interface. Then click the Scan button, hit Scan, and let the scan run.Once the scan is finished, a log will pop up. Hi, whenever I right click on my background to make a new folder or go to change the resolution it takes like at least 3 seconds to load. And whenever I open folders, it takes like 3-5 seconds to load, (IE. pressing "upload" on a website and it pops up to where you pick your file location, it is very slow to load up. Start up is slow vs my school's "outdated" computer that also runs windows 7. Like all the basic things you do on my school's computer is faster than mines, and mines is pretty decent..

I have 4gb ddr3 1600mhz of ram.
I have 940 quad core amd cpu
I have a gtx 460 nivida
I CAN RUN ALL OF THE GAMES I PLAY IN MAX SETTINGS, which is why this is kind of weird.
I have all the latest drivers installed

If there is any other info you need, please tell me. I also dont seem to have any antivirus since i scanned with at least 2 antivirus software.

It happened for a while now, but i brought this up now cause im officially annoyed with it. I heard is something about "contexting" or something like that?

I really don't want to reinstall windows, but have tried similar things as before, and have got no where.

So far, I have:
- Scanned for viruses and spyware (AdAware and SpyBot and AVG)
- Uninstalled anything I installed the days leading up to the slow-down.
- Uninstalled and reinstalled audio drivers.
- Selective startup via msconfig
- Tried a system restore to prior-slowdown
- chkdsk for errors
- Ran memcheck from boot

This is my father's computer but I am trying to fix it for my mother because it is sentimental to her since my dad just died on christmas (we have had a GREAT week)This is windows 7 home premium 2009 service pack 1. Basically the system runs slow and it always says it is not responding, on internet explorer 9, on windows explorer, opening up control panel---anything windows it does this. eventually it will start responding again on its own. it is by far the worst with internet explorer. i thought perhaps it needed some updates. i tried to install them but it just says it is starting to download, stays at zero and when i finally cancel it, it tells me it was a 8000FFFF error. i was going to try to fix that but all the information on it is for vista and i didn't want to hurt the computer further.dad has avast on there but i don't think it is that great. i tried advanced systemcare 5 the deep clean and it cleaned up a lot of stuff but it didn't find any viruses or malware. however, as it is scanning under the full malware removal, i see things that say trojan.trace trojan.win32/agent trojan.win32/vundo backdoor.bot backdoor.frauder, there was also a worm IRC something and something about psw games mixed in with the aforementioned. these have to be problems, yes? advanced care says there are no problems.I also ran malwarebytes. it found like 16 adware but the system is still running really slow.I am not computer illiterate but i am not a computer genius. i can fol... Hi, my laptop has become very slow in starting up. Up to ten minutes in fact! It goes throuygh all processes as normal, but just takes ten times longer!
Also, my mouse and curser are acting strange. the curser judders across the screen rather than moving in a smoth normal motion, and it occasionally dissapears completely for a second or two.
All programs take ages to load and generally my PC is taking 5-10 times longer to do anything than it normaly does.

Everything was fine up until 2 or 3 days ago when this started happening. I have NOT downloaded anything over the past week.

I attach my HT log, and thanks in advance to any one interested in helping me. Thank you.

Hello - hoping someone can help with this problem.

My friend uses his laptop purely for work related bits of computing. Invoices, Email - that kind of thing. Someone tried to put Sage accounts on it for him and since that dayhe's had nothing but issues. Computer running very slowly, Google chrome not opening, Microsoft Security Essentials not opening...

I remotely logged into his machine and had a bit of a look around. I also ran Trend Housecall which found and fixed a few Virus. One thing that was a problem was when starting Trend Housecall - when you click start scan and it downloads the .exe file, this was going into the downloads file and had a file extension of numbers rather than the .exe.

I also noticed that his Microsoft Internet Explorer, which he started using when Chrome wouldn't open had at some time been taken over by safefinder.com - this was the URL when opening Internet Explorer - http://search.safefinder.com/?st=sc&q=

So I've taken a HijackThis log on his machine and hoping someone can help find the cause of the issues he's having.

Here is the log file

Hi-

This is the first time I've ever posted something. Generally, I do my own research and then fix the issue, but I'm at a loss. So, any help is greatly appreciated. btw - I did not download anything (to my knowledge).

Issues:
1) Extremely slow system - When monitoring my system performance, it is almost always maxed out (even when only running Firefox).
2) When I click on "My Computer" - nothing will show up and it just shows Windows "Searching"
3) My Wireless Network is no longer working - I guess I may need to re-install the driver
4) When I restart or shut-down, I get an error with the following (Wireless; Power Tray; and something else...will post when I do it again)
5) My system tray does not seem to load all applications - At least I'm thinking so.

What I've done:
1) Updated version and ran virus scan from symatec
2) Updated version and ran virus scan for malwareadbytes Anti-Malware
3) Ran Autorun Eater
4) And now I have the Hijackthis log

Any idea what my issue may be??? I appreciate the help.

First of all let me inform you that my laptop is so slow that I am making this post on my smart phone. Yes, it's so frustratingly slow that I'm being forced to this tiny screen on my phone. I had to sign up for techsupportforum on this phone and everything so I am really, really irritated now by my laptop.

It was workimg decently a few weeks ago but recently it has become unusable by first-world standards.

I'm not a computer whiz but I'll give as much info as I can.

Some info:
- OS: Windows 7
- Memory: C: 99 GB, 24 GB free; E: 118 GB, 56 GB free; External HDD 1.3 TB, 110 GB free
- Dell Laptop Vostro 3550
- About a year old
- 3 GB RAM
- 64-bit
- Processor: Intel Core i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10 GHz

Problem:
No matter what I do, I will receive lag/delay. If I open up an internet browser like firefox or chrome, they will take a long time to open up, about maybe 3-5 minutes average. IF I even go into the google search bar or URL bar to type something it will freeze up, I get the nice blue circle and at the top it will have a nice (Not Responding) in parentheses. This also happens if I open a new tab in said browsers, or open a new link in a new page or tab, there will be lag, delay.
If I open Control Panel, Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, any movie or music file, there will be delay. EVEN when I open the Calculator, NOTEPAD. Yes, there is delay on starting up even Notepad and lag when I attempt to type anything in it, I.e. I type maybe 4 words, it will lag and if I ... Read more

Hi.

I am having problems with a very slow system. It is very slow to start up, and also very slow to open up any programs. However, once things do open up (such as the browser), the program running works fine.

I am using Windows XP with 2 users. I was receiving help in the HJT forum and was advised to turn here because they say my system is clean.

I updated Windows, defragmented, cleared infections.

Also, about half of the times I start up the system, the mouse freezes at the point where I'm supposed to select a user. It won't respond to alt/ctl/del and I have to push the button to get a response (shuts it down so I can then restart).

Thanks,
Tulip

Hey, I just noticed something with regard to your user with the MS Office problem. You should try unchecking Office for that user (on startup) and see if that relieves their issue about the installer and error messages.

In other news, what is the processor type and speed and how much RAM does the PC have?

My computer sometimes runs slow. Sometimes when I click a link or open the browser it goes to an error page (this page cannot be displayed). Often, things will terminate, such as Adaware with no apparent cause. When I log on I usually get an error message telling me that ashweb has a problem and must terminate. I don't know what that is or what it's associated with. My old PC had an area under "all programs" for MS security center. It would show me the status of my antivirus as well as my firewall. With this computer, I don't even know how to turn my firewall on. However, looking for the security center mentioned I found a similar looking link in the top part of "all programs". I clicked it and it opened a browser window and went to some kind of spyware removal page. I told my wife that it looked suspicious and searched for it. It turned out to be malicious-associated with something like Spy Sheriff, I think (I don't remeber the exact name. I downloaded smitfraudfix from majorgeeks and also stopzilla. the smitfraudfix did remove the mentioned spyware. However, stopzilla detected several instances of Peacomm.B and "Trusted Protection". I thought that stopzilla may have shown these as false positives so I'd buy their license to remove the offenders. I ran the online Panda scan as indicated by your site in "the five steps before posting a log". Your site said to save a copy of that file but it didn't say what to do with it.I have posted t... Does having too many things plugged into the router slow internet down? For example: I have my wireless adapter for my xbox upstairs plugged into the router downstairs and then I have the computer plugged into that and the xbox downstairs also plugged into it (all one router). I don't know why, but the computer upstairs is much faster than the one downstairs, which is connected in the router in which many things are connected in. There is a wireless router on the one upstairs. Also, (if you can answer this), what you do on the computer, could it also affect the connection on xbox live? I don't know what category this goes in, but I'll just ask here, if you'd be so kind to help.

A:Solved: 2 many things in router slow internet connection??

The only way the devices would slow down each other's connection down would be if you were using them all at the same time accessing the internet. If you were downloading every image on Wikipedia and playing Xbox Live, it would be slow. If the devices are just on (idling) , though, it shouldn't affect it.

Hi all,

It’s sad when you are computer problem solver in your community and you have problem in your laptop that you cannot solve…

Without a reason (that I can recall) my laptop become slow… and a lot of things didn’t work… e.g. :

Windows Update:
Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer.

Network Connections:
The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections service is enabled and running. (But my laptop and connected to the network and can browse the internet)

Power Configuration: it does not open at all (no error message)

System Information:
Can’t Collect Information
Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing.Click to expand...

That was just a sample of the things that stopped working
When I open Windows Task Manager I notice that only half of the CPU is being used, check the picture below to know what I mean:

One more thing... I tried System Restore and it told me that it restored successfully but it didn't restore any thing, everything was the same

I use avast as an AntiVirus and did full boot scan and I use Ad-Aware SE Personal.

And this is my HijackThis log:

Hey all,
This problem is driving me absolutely crazy and I am really hoping SOMEONE can help me! The problem is my broadband internet connection has gone from being really fast for the last year to excruciatingly slow all of a sudden last week, and it has stayed that way. This happened once previously a couple of months back and getting rid of an old expired copy of Norton antivirus fixed it up straight away. But this time I've tried what seems like every single thing i've read in every web forum that has solved the problem for other people, but with no success.

Things I have tried;
Cleared browser caches
Tried in both IE and Firefox
Disabled phishing
Confirmed that my ISP has nothing to do with the slow speed
Tried plugging directly into my modem, ie. bypassing router
System restore to before the problem started
Switched off IPV6
global autotuninglevel=disabled and ipconfig /flushdns
Uninstalled all the windows updates from around the time the problem started
Changed my power setting to maximum performance
Have tried starting in safe mode and it's still the same

Have run spyware and malware scans and they came up with nothing
Virus scan (I use Avast) also came up clean

Another computer in the house running XP is still fast

I've heard some people mention rolling back driver network cards...but I can't do this as the option is not available as it has never updated

I have also tried a few other things but I can't even remember what they were... Read more

I wrote a whole thing here and it logged me out when I clicked on send and lost everything, so I'll try to give the short version of this (edit: was unsuccessful at short):

I have had this computer for nearly two years, it works fine most of the time. I use it for many things one of them is to play World of Warcraft and Skyrim. While I play, the system will be okay one second and then everything gets really slow and the audio gets awfully distorted, the framerate goes to nearly 0, and it overall just feels like things are going to explode. The distortion lasts for about 15 seconds then things go back to normal. I play the games on minimum settings and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Lately it's happening less horribly every now and then even when I'm not playing.

Recently my computer has been running slow at times and doing weird things. Sometimes it will freeze for about 15 seconds and this morning I pressed on the keyboard to awake the computer from sleep mode and I was getting no signal to my monitor even though the computer was on. I ended up having to cut power (I know it's really bad) to my computer in order to restart it.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

A:Computer running slow/doing weird things. Believe I have malware

By the way, the reason I believe this is malware related is because this began happening after I accidentally downloaded a suspicious file.

Hi people,

I'm having the above mentioned problems, and I wondered if it was spyware. I have spybot and adaware (as well as a couple of other anti-spyware programs) and run them regularly, but I guess something may have gotten through. My main problem is that certain things are mising from the notification area, namely the LAN connection box (which is really just irritating) and the 'safely remove hardware' icon. This is serious, because it means I can't remove my USB key properly, and I haven't been able to use it for a while. I'll just post my log.

Hi - It's been a year, but I'm back.

Recently my PC has been very slow to switch between windows when I'm multitasking. Usually have a couple of MSN pages, a couple of programs running, listening to iTunes, windows explorer, and picture project open and move between them all. Usually no problems.

Also, when I close everything there is still a lot of activity on the hard drive.

Have done everything (I think) on the Slow PC thread. Panda found 3 things. HJT log below and Panda file attached.

Spyware Doctor found 39 things, but I didn't subscribe for removal as I wonder how many spyware programs do I really need?

Moderately PC Savvy......but please be gentle with me!

Thank you

This is my father's computer but I am trying to fix it for my mother because it is sentimental to her since my dad just died on christmas (we have had a GREAT week)
This is windows 7 home premium 2009 service pack 1. Basically the system runs slow and it always says it is not responding, on internet explorer 9, on windows explorer, opening up control panel---anything windows it does this. eventually it will start responding again on its own. it is by far the worst with internet explorer. i thought perhaps it needed some updates. i tried to install them but it just says it is starting to download, stays at zero and when i finally cancel it, it tells me it was a 8000FFFF error. i was going to try to fix that but all the information on it is for vista and i didn't want to hurt the computer further.

dad has avast on there but i don't think it is that great. i tried advanced systemcare 5 the deep clean and it cleaned up a lot of stuff but it didn't find any viruses or malware. however, as it is scanning under the full malware removal, i see things that say trojan.trace trojan.win32/agent trojan.win32/vundo backdoor.bot backdoor.frauder, there was also a worm IRC something and something about psw games mixed in with the aforementioned. these have to be problems, yes? advanced care says there are no problems.

I also ran malwarebytes. it found like 16 adware but the system is still running really slow.

I am not computer illiterate but i am not a comp... Read more

Hi everyone,

My name's Ian and I am new here. I don't know what else to do about my situation, it seems I have tried everything. I am just hoping that I do not need a new hard drive.

Here's the problem:

The other day, when I logged onto my computer, I noticed my computer running slow when trying to navigate simple things such as the internet browser (Google Chrome) and the folder directory (Windows Explorer). Furthermore, I cannot seem to download any windows updates on my system and when I perform a disk check on my C drive, a lot of files come up as unreadable (the process takes hours).

Here's what I have tried:

1. Rebooted and let the disk check finish twice. Many files were unreadable.
2. Defragging the disk drive. Didn't seem to do anything.
3. Ran MalwareBytes in Safe Mode. Nothing was found.
4. Rebooted and navigated to the "repair" section of the advanced options. Didn't fix the problem.
5. Performed a registry check using CCleaner. I don't think it helped.

My thought after doing all of this (aside from buying a new hard drive) is that there are some registry files missing from the OS. Either that or I have some pretty serious malware that MalwareBytes can't even pick up. I've been reading a little about ComboFix, but I understand that is a complicated program and I should only run it with expert guidance.

As you can tell, I am familiar with how computers work, but I am by no means an expert. Could I get someone's input... Read more

Hello everyone!

Lately my computer has been booting very slow. When it gets to the desktop i still need to wait 1-2 minutes before i can connect to the internet, open my computer etc.It totally takes about 7 minutes before i can do anything, and that's annoying!

I also noticed that my CPU usage was through the roof.Random processes were consuming the cpu, including svchost.exe, but only at startup.Randomly i have cpu spikes,it goes up to 80% and then drops immediatly to 10%.

I have tried various fixes like registry cleaners, defragmenters and registry defragmenters.Still no luck.

I apologize if this has been covered ad nauseum, but I've searched through the posts and have generally done everything that was suggested, but my stupid %(#*$&@# laptop is still a complete slug! I'm also a total luddite, so in all reality there's a good chance it's user-error...

Here's my specs:

Sony VAIO 1.66 GHz
2.00 GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo
Vista Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1
60 GB free space on hard drive

I've defragmented the hard drive, changed all the visual settings back to "Windows Classic", I have a ReadyBoost card providing 4 GB of space, I have checked my c:\ drive for errors (and automatically fixed them), and I have Norton 360 installed and have run current drive scans.

I'm stumped. It really seems to be slowing down in the past few months, although I don't think i've downloaded anything of consequence. it just seems to be aging (albeit not gracefully). Now whenever I open a window or program, it will take several seconds (more like 20-30) to start up, and often it will go into "Not Responding" mode before actually starting - this is even with basic Windows programs like the Control Panel.

I'm losing my noodle! Please help before I commit laptop murder!

:) Thank you!!!

A:Vista runs SO slow! Tried numerous things, but I'm ready to toss it out the window..

Vista is no speed champ, but with your specs it should be running better than it is. First off you need to see what is running that is slowing things down. Norton is known for being a resource hog, so start there. There are a few tools to check.
First, open Task Manager, by right-clicking on the task bar at the bottom of the screen. Then clcik on the "Processes" tab. This shows you a list of everything running on the pc. Find the "Show processes from all users" button and click it. You will get a security warning, just hit continue. Now you will notice there are a lot more processes. These are all the system processes. Look through the list and check the "memory" column. See what process is using the most memory. If you don't reconize the process, just google it.
Another tool you can use is the cpu monitor inside the sidebar. Just "add gadgets" to the sidebar. I think it is called cpu monitor. Anyway, this will show you current cpu usage and memory usage (memory is the smaller gague).
This will give you a start on getting to what is hogging up your resources.

Hope this helps!

Thanks

Some time ago, Kaspersky started picking up, what it described as, trojan horses on a daily bases. My computer also became very slow. Other than that, my computer seemed to function normally (still had access to the internet, all my files and programs worked fine). I came here for help (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic325308.html) and followed the steps given to me. However, even though the steps seemed to help, Kaspersky continued to pick up hundreds of infected files on a weekly basis. The moderator then said I might have a buried rootkit and recommended that I post here. I recently had a pretty badly infected computer that was sorted out over at the PCPitstop Forums (see thread here: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?show...170536&st=0 ). Now that I am (presumably) clean, I have some other issues.During the repair to my system I was told to update my Java (as well as uninstall old versions). I got a few notices that I couldn't because of admin things, but they uninstalled anyway it looked like, but then when I tried to install the latest (jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe) it says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." Thing is I am the only user and have full administrator access. Doing some searching, I found the trying the MSInstaller clean up utility could help, but that give the same message when I try it. Then I saw I could check msconfig to make sure it was running. MSConfig shows it as Stopped, but the box is checked next to it. Trying to check and uncheck, then apply, it says "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes."I also tried to update iTunes today and it failed to install as well. Some information:Dell Inspiron E1705Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3Running Trend Micro PC-Cillin, SAS, Ad-AwareI don't know if the cleaning messed up something, or if I am still infected.

A:Can't Install things or change things in MSConfig (Admin problems)

MSConfig shows it as Stopped, but the box is checked next to it. Trying to check and uncheck, then apply, it says "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes."Do you have an HP printer? The msconfig isssue can be caused by HP printers. If you do have an HP printer:Make your change in msconfig. When you get the error message, click OK.Another box may open, do the same thing, click OK.Everything will close out, you will be asked if you want to restart the computer.More information can be found here: http://www.pchell.com/support/msconfig_acc...ied_error.shtmlThere is a way to get rid of it, but it involves editing the registry.IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH EDITING THE REGISTRY, DON'T DO IT.You'll have to live with the message each time you use msconfig.

I have run Exact Audio Copy just fine for years. A week ago it crashed my PC. I ran SlimDrivers and updated a driver, but no help. I tried System Restore, but it failed.

I downloaded the newest version of EAC, still crashes when trying to open. I eventually uninstalled it, installed a newer version, same result.

I run a Dell 550mhz with 128mb ram,
Computer runs extremely slow and hangs.
ZoneAlarm was NOT RESPONDING, so I removed it.
Internet Explorer and Mozilla errors - NOT RESPONDING

So....
I ran SPYBLASTER
I ran SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY
I ran AD-AWARE
I ran REGISTER PATROL
I stopped almost all programs from beginning at startup.
I removed programs not used.
I defragmented the disk.
I removed ZoneAlarm, as it seemed to be part of the problem (NOT RESPONDING).

But now the slowness has returned so....

I ran Hijackthis, and here's the log:

Hello......
Just to clarify, you have only 128MB of memory? What operating system do you have? Also, you most definitely need an anti-virus program at all times.

Edit: Sorry I just saw you have WinXP for an OS.

A:Suggested Hjt Log

Hello healing41 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

Fragmentation isn't really a malware issue. It is just a natural occurance that happens over time. XP has a built-in defragmenter and there are many 3rd party disk-defragmenters. It is good to defragment a drive occasionally but unless the disk is heavily fragmented and the free disk space is less than about 10% of the drive there will probably not be a noticible performance improvement. The 2 files that will have the biggest impact from fragmentation are the swap file and the Master File Table which can only be defragmented with 3rd party defragers. NTFS file systems handle file fragmentation better than the old FAT system found on older operating systems like Win98 so an acasional defrag with the built-in XP utility should be Ok.

Cheers.

My PC has been freezing. Before you yell at me this is what I've tried.
?Checked hardware, no yellow ! marks
?Checked memory...all 6 scans 2 passes...nada.
?Checked drivers...diagnostic came up empty handed
?turned off startups...disabled windows services...nothing
?Defraged, disc cleanup, reverted to an earlier state for windows...none helped
?attempted to change Anti Virus Programs since Avira & Mcafee caught nothing...
now I can't install AVG because Mcafee is still present somehow...although
I couldn't uninstall it the traditional way...I googled and found links from threads that led
me to the uninstall tool...which I ran and rebooted...it's no longer in the uninstall options..but
AVG still says it can't Install because of McAfee.

I'm basically posting this now..because I don't see any fixes different than the ones I've already tried.
Can anyone help. I did go through some of the rules and if I broke any of them in this post...I appologize. I'm in safe mode now and my screen size sucks typing this too. Thanks. I'm glad
I was able to get this typed before my PC froze again.
Windows XP, Dell Vostro 410, had it for about 2 years. It's my shop pc...I own a sign shop...this is my
