large text that doesn't fit into windows

Q: large text that doesn't fit into windows

We lost electricity this morning and when my computer came back up all the windows were huge. I went to control panel>display>settings and changed my DPI. This made the windows smaller but the text is still large -- doesn't fit in the text boxes. I went to control panel>display>appearance>advanced and the font there is greyed out and won't let me select it. Any ideas of how to make the text fit in the boxes?

Hi,

I'm not sure what I've done but all of the text in the menu items is all appearing very large. I presume I've done this using a short cut some how. I've attempted all of the obvious solutions in display settings to no avail. Below is an example of how the menu looks in Excel.

I'm sure it's a simple one but any help appreciated.

Andrew.

I've everything I know but still cant figure it out. I've notice it not displaying backgrounds also. Please Help!!

I?m not able to find any text strings starting not from the beginning of word in filename or in file content using Windows 7 search.

My Windows 7 search configuration:

Let?s say I?m searching for a documents containing word ?content?.

I?m able to find those documents when searching for ?content?, ?conte?, ?con? (as long as the string includes the beginning of the word).

"content"

"con"

But if I search for ?ontent?, ?tent? or any other combination that doesn?t include the beginning of the word, Windows search won't find it.

I've tried other indexing/searching software such as Copernic Desktop search, Google desktop search.
Those programs also weren?t able to find part of the word starting from the middle of the word. For instance, it finds ?conte?, but doesn?t find ?onte?.

Finds ?conte?

Doesn?t find ?onte?

I got the same problem using Copernic desktop search.

On the other hand, when I use non-indexing content search software such as Agent Ransack or FileSeek, I get the same results when searching for ?conte? or ?onte?:

?conte?

?onte?

Why do all pre-indexing content search applications (Windows search, Google desktop, Copernic desktop search) fail to search for a string inside the words?

Why do non-indexing applications find text strings wherever they are: in the beginning, middle or end of the word?

How can I make Windows search find strings from any part of words?... Read more

A:Windows 7 search doesn’t find text strings

Check if this works:

content:~*onte*

I find W7 search cumbersome and sometimes unreliable (but fast to find the calulator! lol).
For any important search needs I use Agent Ransack (home) \ FileLocator Pro (work), non-indexed but immensely reliable.

SysExporter - How to grab text data when Windows doesn't let you COPY

Did you ever see text in a window that you wanted to copy? But couldn't?
When you tried, you discover

Right clicks are disabled in the window. You can?t get a context menu to Select All then Copy
Windows doesn?t even allow you to click and drag your cursor to select text in the window
Frustrating!

An example: Device Manager. You open Device Manager and see a list of devices but you can?t copy the device list! So, now download and run this: SysExporter. Figure 1 below shows Device Manager on the left. SysExporter on the right.
SysExporter has an upper and lower pane display. Use column info in the upper pane to find the window you want. Click any column header to sort that column. Upper pane columns include:
Title ? Window TitleItems - # of items grabbed from the window (not including constant items)In our example, we?re interested in

Windows Title = Device Manager as it?s what appears in the upper left hand corner of the window
Items= 115. We know there are a lot of device item entries so appears like the right number
We click the entry in the upper pane and then see the items in the lower pane. And that is exactly what we want!

In lower pane, use the right click context menu to select the items you want to copy (see Figure 2 below) You can the decide among several formats when you save the items

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section but a collegue has complained that when printing emails from Outlook Express they will sporadically print with all the body text at a much larger size, maybe 15 or 16, whilst the header text containing all the to and from information stays it's normal size. On screen, the text is fine, and if forwarded to myself, the text remains normal when I print, it's only on her machine. If I then re-forward the email back to her, again it wil print with oversized body text

She's running XP Pro, I believe on SP1, with an HP1220C A3 printer, all the current drivers are installed (I've just installed them myself before posting this query) and all the settings on Outlook Express match mine exactly.

Any ideas on why this happens and how to stop it?

A:Text prints too large in Outlook Express

Sorry for double posting, didnt see an Edit button anywhere, but I've solved this now,and if anyone else has this problem I'd like to share the solution:

It turns out that Outlook Express uses the same print engine as Internet Explorer, so to change the text size and margin settings:

For print size: IE>View>Text Size>Make adjustment.

For margins: IE>File>Page Setup.

Then print your email again and alls good!

I have Win XP and recently did auto updates and installed them, including the SP3 update. But I waited quite some time before applying SP3. I did install the other updates, and since I did the other small updates, I get huge or full screen text boxes or whatever you call them.

Since then, I did all available updates including the SP3 thinking that some new update would remove this annoying problem but it didn't. My XP is up to date but with this problem.

Secondly, I was never able to update IE6 to IE7 or IE8, tried several times, even tried disabling the commodo firewall and trying. No use. Same problem with Office 2007 SP2. Can someone help?

I've also tried cleaning the registry with tuneup utilities.

That may have been your undoing . . Registry cleaning rarely does anything good and often harms the system.

I Would start with reinstalling your video drivers to take care of the size issue.

What antivirus are you using? . . Did you disable it before installing SP3?

I'm creating a new worksheet and ideally, one of the columns would be long, properly formatted text strings in one small, neat cell.

For example... suppose I would have first name, last name, favourite color, pet's name and other fields in their respective cells... but I would want a properly formatted "about" or "background" or "bio" type text in another cell for this record.

Obviously that text could be just a few words in some cases, or several paragraphs in other cases... but (again, ideally!) when copied out, it would retain all the line breaks and other formatting for it.

Another example could be gathering customer tetimonials... again, name, city, product they are offering a testimonial for... these are standard and basic fields in the spreadsheet. But (again, as an example of what I'm looking for), their testimonial text would be in a neat cell by itself... which, again, could be just one line of text or several paragraphs that would need to maintain it's proper formatting when copied out?

Is this even possible? I appreciate the assistance.

In case it matters, I'm running Excel 2003 (ie: Office 2003) on my Windows XP based PC.

Please and thank you.

Hi Everyone,

I have a PC in my living room that we use as a Media Centre. It's an Asus Eee PC 1501, which has Windows XP installed on it. All it is generally used for is to run XBMC, play music via iTunes and do a little web-surfing.

Last night I received some sort of error, the ones that you occasionally get were the dialogue box will generally ask do you want to send the error to Microsoft; 'Send' or 'Don't Send', etc. I normally take note but I was going to to turn off the pc anyway so I pretty much just ignored it (now I can't remember what error it was) and I shut down the PC as normal.

Today I started up my PC as normal, although I seem to have lost many functions. The system hangs just after the welcome screen on the desktop for a while (far longer than it used to. About 5 minutes) without displaying any icons at all.

I seem to have lost the ability to play sound. It's as if Windows cannot detect any drivers even though when I navigate to Device Manager, all hardware has been recognised and the drivers are as reported "working properly". There doesn't seem to be any graphical issues and video runs fine through VLC, but of course without the accompanying audio. When I go to volume control I receive the message:

"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printer and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close"Click... Read more

Hi there
I love using Adobe photo shop (CS6 extended) but a major irritant is that the Adobe menu text always seems too small. (The Photoshop menus - not Windows). Has anyone any idea how to make the text size bigger.

Here's a sample of what I mean - the second image shows the text in the drop down fine -- deliberately made bigger to explain what I mean - but the Photoshop titles are tiny and hard to read -- and the 3rd image is what you see when using Bridge -- The image browser built into photo shop -- the text is TINY.

Cheers

A:Photoshop menu text too small on large monitor

I found these suggestions :

To change the font size for Photoshop's user interface, simply go up to the Photoshop menu at the top of the screen (Edit menu in Windows), choose Preferences, and then choose General. You'll see an option near the top of the Preferences dialog box called UI Font Size. Simply select a different size from the menu.

You'll need to close out of Photoshop and restart it for the change to take effect.

In CS6, "Font Preview Size" is now located under the "Type" menu item, not under "Type" in the CS6 Preferences.

The primary issue is that when I am online, some web pages open with extremely large text while some others open up in a normal / regular size. When I go through start up procedures the initial / selected destop background comes on screen, but within the final sequence this changes to solid white. The icons are present but have a weird blue shadow. Thanks in advance for any help,

Hello all,
I am fairly new to macros and am looking to split a large word document into smaller files based on a text string within the document, and then save those files as individual word documents, or as a bonus, PDF documents. The text string is "HEADER DATA".

Basically, I want the macro to find the text string "HEADER DATA", then select that page and all pages up to but not including the next instance of "HEADER DATA", then cut those pages from the original document, create a new document with the same formatting/ page layout, and save that document with a new file name. I want the process repeated until the end of the document, and each file saved with a new file name.

Some attributes about the file:

The text string "HEADER DATA" is always in the same location on a page, but is not at the top of the page.
The format and layout of the new document must match the current document.

Here is something I came up with (don't laugh too hard, lol). This will extract the first pages as intended, and saves the new file, but then Word stops responding. I don't quite know what the error is. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi, assuming you haven't relevant system restore points (system restore is off by default in Win 10- which has surprised people) or disk images to restore (everyone using Windows really needs to use disk imaging as Win 10 in particular seems fragile) then:

I suggest an in-place upgrade repair install
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
which will allow you to keep everything bar a few settings, and it will disable system restore again.

Hopefully this will resolve the problem, albeit using a sledgehammer approach.

The Powershell commands often recommended to reinstall apps seem to break several currently, so pending news that now works, I would advise against using them.

On my old pc where everything else is working just fine, no problems, no viruses: I had a text file and read it this morning. Later I used search (above the start button) to find it again. Right-clicking properties, I found the file was read-only. I tried to copy the file from the search list but Windows 7 Pro wouldn't let me. It only created a shortcut in the folder I wanted to copy to. Deleted the shortcut.

Still later that file didn't show up using the same search. Searched in Windows Explorer. Nope. Thought a pointer might've gotten messed up and tried a Restore Point (to yesterday). Read here that RP only deals w/system files (which is why your data files are left alone). Don't understand how the original file was 'lost' but wondering if I run Scandisk if that might help.

Not a big deal, the data can be re-created basically. But I'd rather have the original back.

As always, any feedback would be appreciated : ),

A:lost a text file, now explorer say doesn't exist

You could try using recovery software. I have had  fair success with Recuva, a free download from BC -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/recuva/

Download and install it then run it. You can tell it to search quite a precise location. If you know the folder where your text file was kept set it to search that folder. One small tip. It produces the best results if you do not ask it to save recovered files onto the same drive they were stored in. In your case I would suggest plugging in an empty memory stick and instructing it to save to that.

A point to bear in mind, you said "my old PC". It would probably be a good idea to back up all your data off this computer to external storage ASAP, just in case this missing file is an indicator of a failing hard drive. If your data is backed up, a deceased hard drive becomes a major nuisance rather than a catastrophe !

For example when trying to sign in here I usually just click the username box, "Bad-People" comes up and I click it to enter it automatically. But "Bad-People" doesn't come up anymore.

I figured resetting things just erased the history. That would have been fine but it also doesn't remember anything I enter new. So if I signed in here, then signed out, and then tried to sign in again "Bad-People" STILL wouldn't show up. This is a feature I use A LOT on a number of sites but it no longer works on any site I've tried.

I hope I can clearly explain this problem.

I've built a query that has one a criteria line that looks like this:

IIf([Forms]![frmMyForm]![cbMyComboBox]="Regional",[Forms]![frmMyForm]![cbMyOtherComboBox],[tblMyTable].[myField])

The query runs exactly as it should and filters the value in cbMyOtherComboBox parameter if the word "Regional" is in the noted in cbMyComboBox, or does not filter on anything if the word "Regional" does not appear in the cbMyComboBox.

I've built a report based on this query. In the report I've placed a chart, also based on the same query and created a master-child link on one of the fields so that the chart will loop through the data for each grouping within the field and chart the data.

This all worked great and smooth, until I added the filter to the query that callls the combobox value in the form. While, like I said, the query runs smooth, the report does not. Actually, the report runs fine in report view, but it breaks in print preview (or printing to PDF) and states the following error message:

The Microsoft Office Access database engine does not recognize [Forms]![frmMyForm]![cbMyOtherComboBox] as a valid field name or expression.

Any thoughts on why this won't work with print view (but it does with report view) and how I can fix this?

Hi everyone,

Here's an annoying little bug that I can't find a reason for...

When I paste a large amount of text (several lines) into a cell that has the WRAP TEXT format property turned on, I've found that it doesn't always wrap the text to fit in the cell; sometimes it will use just the first line of the cell and let the text spill beyond the border of the cell, and sometimes it will successfully wrap the text to fit in the cell. What gives?? I usually end up having to manually insert line returns at the end of each line to make the text fit properly in the cell.

I've also encountered this problem (sometimes) when I've had to change the width of a column after text had already been pasted into the cell.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how fix this "pebble in my shoe"?

BTW, I am using Excel 97.

I use both the in-built version of Paint, and the earlier mspaint which I copied from XP and pasted into Windows 8.1.

Both have been working until this evening, when their Text windows stopped opening.

Not knowing what else to try, I ran the system file check, and rebooted, but that has made no difference.

What can I do to repair them?

Windows Outlook Express 6.0--incoming email text is blank. Did some searching and found a partial solution> regsvr32 inetcomm.dll. This works find overnight, but the same problem returns the next day.

I am running Windows XP Sp2 Pentium 4 Compaq. I have also scanned for malware, etc, using Pest Patrol 5.0, Giant AntiSpyware, and GoldWare with 0 results. Virus scans through Kasperksy, Norton and McAfee Stinger have also found no virus.

What can I do next since it seems to also be affecting MS Outlook as well.

I've experienced this on various websites, forums, etc.. where I'm typing into a text box. (Oddly it's working here just fine).

Since I find it much faster to move the "beam" cursor around with the arrow keys (and CTRL+Arrow key to jump over whole words), I frequently use that instead of the mouse to reposition the cursor, handy if I want to go back a few words and add or change something.

However on many sites, using the arrow keys fails to move the beam, yet the actual input position does change.

For example, I'll press "CRTL+Left Arrow" a few times to jump back three words. On the screen the beam stops flashing but stays put, yet if I start to type the typing starts where the beam should have ended up if it moved properly.

Follow me?

Any suggestions on fixing this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Cursor beam doesn't move with arrow keys in text areas

I think that the cursor you are describing is a function of the video driver, check for an update and/or uninstall and re-install the one you are using.

I am preparing a chemistry textbook and have hit several interesting, undocumented limits in Word. I was able to bypass them by splitting the document into two documents and linking the second as a sub-document in the first. This introduced another interesting problem...

Each document contains several text boxes.

Observations
• Everything is visible is print preview.
• When I print each individual document, everything prints.
• [THE PROBLEM] When I print the complete document, some(?) text boxes in the first document do not print; all text boxes in the second document print. (Again, everything is visible in print preview, but not in the printed document).

Your thoughts...

Hard to say what happened, but I suspect that one of the system fonts has gone missing. Wihout being able to navigate, you better just do a repair installation unless you can navigate System Restore well enough to give it a try.

Greetings! I've searched everywhere for the answer to this issue. It must be common, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm using MS Word 2007, but the problem was the same in 2003. I sometimes get a text box that is behind regular text. I need to move it. One normally just selects a text box and drags, or cut and paste, it where one wants. However, when it is behind text, it can't be selected. I have found no way to select normal text and "send it behind."

How do I get to this text box that is behind my regular text? I've been told to "move the regular text out of the way, then you will be able to get to your text box." But the text box moves with text!

Thanks,

7nyerik

Over the past week, there have been occasions when I'm in Firefox and when I type, no text appears. Instead the tabs at the top of the Firefox page (i.e. File, Edit, View, History) are selected. It seems that I need to close down all Firefox windows and reopen to get rid of the problem. But the fix is only temporary. It comes back a few days later. I'm not sure what the cause is. I've followed the steps on the "Read this first" section. Then I went through the steps in the Prep Guide. When I run rootrepeal, the scan seems to stop at c:/windows/winsxs/manifests. Of the files that seem to have been scanned in rootrepeal up until the manifests part, they all say "locked to the windows api!" in the status section. Since I can't get further, I'm attaching my dds and attach logs below. Would love to hear if I am doing something wrong. Thanks!!

I will shortly need to move a large number (20,000) very large (20-30Mb) image files and associated tiny xmp sidecar files from one hard drive to another.

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

A:moving large number of large files to new drive

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

Hello everyone.

I'm new here so I hope I'm doing everything the way it is supposed to be done.
For starters I have first used the "Search" function, however this didn't lead me to a solution of my problem.

Problem:
Some text appears as Extra Large even though Font size (under Appearance) is set to "Normal".

Please have a look at the screenshot (attached) as it is quite hard to describe whats going on.

Important to note is that the installation of "StyleXP" and the applying of the "Panther" Theme has been done AFTER this problem occurred so I don't think there is a relationship there.

The problem is also not limited to the "Epson Scan" program (seen in the screenshot) I just used it as an example.

It often happens in "Program Menus" and "Dropdown lists", and only within the OS, not inside any browsers (Firefox or IE).

The OS works fine except for this issue.
I'd really appreciate any help regarding this problem.

Maybe there is a way to fix this in the registry?

Kind regards and thanks for reading.

Updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 two weeks ago.
Had problems with Firefox.  Tried to download to replace existing Firefox.  CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up.  Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
-  Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry.  If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.

SO there are a few issues that I need help with.

A:windows 10 problems - start menu doesn't appear, windows key doesn't work, etc

Hello,
Well the first thing you should try is to Run System Restore to before all of these problems started or to when you first installed Windows 10.
Then try to download Firefox from there website
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Third thing is I would recommend to get rid of Avast it is low end and could be allowing virus I recommend ether McAfee or Norton Security.

Those are some things to think about
but it is all up to you when making your final decision

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

My dad was recently doing some work on this computer and he REALLY changed the settings in Word around. I was able to get most of them back to how I like it, except one.

When I highlight text and click "delete" to erase it or highlight it and start typing to replace it... it doesn't work. It's like some "text protector" where it doesn't delete it.

How do I fix it back to the original way? (I remember this happening once before).

I've never seen this problem before in my life and it has me mortified.

My Sony VAIO starts. It's plugged in normally. The power lights flash, it checks the CD-RW drive, and then remains on with the main power light on and the fan on, but the screen remains black and nothing else happens. Windows XP doesn't load. No Sony logo, no "Operating system not found," nothing. It's like it's had a lobotomy.

I haven't installed anything new, and the notebook has just been sitting around unplugged for a few days. The last thing I used it for was to burn a CD with Windows Media Player. The only change I can think of is that my USB tablet isn't plugged in.

Any suggestions? Thanks, everybody.

A:Solved: XP VAIO laptop starts, Windows doesn't, screen doesn't seem to.

If it has a battery installed, try removing that. Then with the laptop power plug UNplugged press and hold the power button for a second or two.

Then plug the power adapter back in WITHOUT replacing the battery and see if you can get a normal start.

When I try to cancel the process it does not register that I have pressed cancel and I have to shut off my laptop manually, waiting a few seconds before turning it back on.

I have uninstalled avast believing that it might be causing an issue with the transfer but the result is still the same.

Hi RM2007 !

What's the maximum display resolution you can set in the display properties ? You probably need to update your video drivers.

Your computer is pretty old and there doesn't seem to be any drivers for XP available from Dell's website.

Found these drivers from Ati's website : http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/legacy-xp.html. Yours should be the second one (under Rage Pro).

If your video card has the standard 4MB memory then once the drivers are installed you'll be able to set your display resolution to 1024 x 768 (85Hz).

About the run command, check that it's checked to appear in the sart menu properties :

Hi, I'm new here. Since a week ago, my computer using large amount of RAM for some Windows processes like explorer.exe and winlogon.exe. When I start the computer, it is working fine, but then after 1 to 2 hours, it use more RAM even if I dont do anything.

Here is the list of the most notable processes
-explorer.exe = 50.000 K to 150.000 K
-wisptis.exe = 20.000 K to 40.000 K (there are two processes, I suspect one of them is a virus)
-winlogon.exe = 40.000 K to 150.000 K

Is it normal or it is definitely a virus? How to reduce these RAM usage?

A:Windows processes using large RAM

Quote:

I suspect one of them is a virus

You are probably correct in assuming there is a virus, as these 3 processes are a part of the Windows OS (Wisptis.exe is a system process which comes included with Microsoft Office Suite driver for Wacom Tablet, Windows ink services and tends to run alongside Adobe Acrobat Reader) Winlogon is the logon service where you logon to Windows with your user name and password.
You can also run Process Explorer to get a better handle on what is doing this.

The filename looks like some HEX registry key of some sort. The curly braces are actually in the filename. I did some quick googling and didn't see anything like this. Any ideas what this could be? I tried moving it to my D: but the file is in use by "System". I'm currently at 3GB free out of 150, so I really need to clear this file out if it is not needed. I thought maybe it might be some corrupted swap file, but I have mine set to my D:

This is Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

A:very large file in c:\windows

Go into safe mode, and rename it. Reboot normally. If your windows loads fine, then just delete the file.

I need to ZIP a folder containing files of about 250 MB. How do I go about this in Windows 7 Home Premium? Also where is the "Compressed (zipped) Folder" (in the "send to" drop down menu) located? Thank you

A:How do I 'ZIP' a large folder in Windows 7

Launch Windows Explorer. Select all the files/folder you want to compress (you can also use CTRL+click to add more files). Right-Click > Send To > Compressed Folder. The ZIP will be located in the folder you are workin in. There is a tutorial if you need more info : Zip a File or Folder - How To

Here are screenshots of how it's done with the built-in zip feature :

If you want more features though, I recommend 7-Zip. It's lightweight, has a LOT of options, usually has better compression on ZIP (or you can use the 7z format which compresses even more), and is open-source : 7-Zip. It will add a context menu accessible via Right-Click in Explorer.

Here are screenshots of the same process with 7-zip :

When I maximize any window, it resizes to just a little bit too large. The resolution of my monitor has not changed, I'm still running at 1280 x 1024, and have been for quite some time. But this is a recent problem (annoyance). I'm wondering if maybe this was caused by one of the recent Windows updates. I can't pin down when I first noticed it, but it's driving me nuts. Anyone have any suggestions?

A:Windows when maximized are too large

If you haven't done so already, right click on an empty space on the desktop and select resolution. Make sure the resolution is the same as your monitor. The correct resolution usually has (recommended) next to it.

Looking at the properties of my C:/Users/Pauline folder, it shows a size of 198Gb, yet opening the folder and viewing the size of each file and sub-folder, they add up to no more than 2Gb (I keep all the libraries and user data files on a separate drive).
Another user, myself, as C:\Users\Malcolm shows a size of 9Gb. Even this is much much larger than the sum of the sub folders, but I could live with that.
Going to folder options and showing hidden and protected files shows nothing in the way of very large files.
Any ideas welcome, as my C: drive is almost full and I don'y know why!!

Your best bet would be to download an application like SpaceSniffer which would give you a graphical view of where the consumed space is going.

It's real easy to use. Just open the zipfile you download, drag the application to your desktop, and launch it.

I see your specs as Windows 7. You may want to right-click on the application and select 'Run as Administrator' which might give you a better view into folders that might otherwise be restricted.

am using windows 98. want to change montior to flat screen. tried a NEC but was told by NEC my 98 couldn't support 1024 x ?, so got a KOGI that had been hooked to an old 95. screen is fuzzy and windows are so large i can't reach the apply or ok buttons. in display there is a minus (-) in front of display adapters; the subtitle is NVIDIA Aladdin TNT2 and a minus (-) in front of monitors with the subtitle of GVISIONL5QX-TIA. Should the display adapters and monitors subtitles be the same? I think the NEC was NVIDIA and I think the KOGI is the GVISION. Any suggestions of Annie?

hi,

I'm having some troubles with windows that are too large to choose the right button.
I've been searching over the internet and I have read things about dpi, but that's 100% in my case and so no problem. I've updated my nvidia graphic's card. I've tried to use a windows 7 fixing tool, no good result.

I'm using an external LED screen with a resolution of 1920x1080. I don't know why it suddenly had this problem... but even without this external screen, the problem shows up

I've included a screenshot of my gta 4 installing wizard (and it's not just with this installing wizard, but also java, adobe pdf...)... Hopefully the image tells you more than what I've been explaining...

thanks anyways for all your replies,

Hi everyone, I was up until 5 am last night banging my head against the wall so I really hope someone can help!!

My PC was experiencing quite a few problems with a year old XP installation so I decided to do a reinstall 2 days ago. I have 2 drives, 80gb(boot) and 250GB (data) (both SATA), I backed up all my important stuff to the data drive, booted my XP disc, wiped the boot drive and away I went. The XP disc is an old, but proper one, that didn't have either service pack on.

I ran through all the reinstall bits and bobs, had a small problem with corrupting downloads that turned out to be Nvidia firewall, got everything patched and all ok but the data drive appears corrupted, it appears in 'my computer' but clicking on it gives me "F:| s not accessable, The file or directory os corrupted and unreadable".

Disc management in admin tools shows up a drive, as healthy, with a size of 232.88 GB, and as active.

I wondered if it was to do with the 48bit LBA addressing or anything else? It was so late last night I wasn't able to fix things and after running into a few things on the web, I physically unplugged the data drive and did the whole windows installation all over again but to absolutely no joy.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Is there anything I can do? I need the data on this drive more than the PC itself!!

Thanks very very much for anything you can give - you lot have proved very very knowledgable in the past!!

Cheers again

Hi everyone,

Im new here and just stumbled on this site, and Im glad I did.

I had a virus, and am pretty sure it is gone. I have done alot of scanning with malwarebytes, nod32, etc. all in safe mode. And I think it is all gone.

Anyways I did a PC recovery (F10 while pc is starting up) and when I do this of course it wipes out all the windows updates that have been loaded up over the years. So there are 99 updates to reload up. When I load them all up at once I have no internet access and I get messages that pop up on restart as in blah blah blah C:/windows/microsoft.net/framework/v2.050727/mscorwks.dll could not be loaded. Also C:/ programfiles/disc/discover.exe cant be loaded either. Before I load all the updates, the pc works fine.

Any solutions out there? Am I just loading too many updates at once on the pc?

My pc is compaq with amd athalon 64 processor 3500+ 991 MHz with 2GB RAM

Thanks in advance for the help

A:No internet after large windows update

Try System Restore to a point prior to all the updates.

Running SP3 standalone will decrease the number of updates you will need.

Last night, just before bed time, my wife informed me that she had seen, earlier in the day, a message indicating low disk space on our Windows 7 (Home Premium) Laptop. I took a look at the properties on C drive and it was down to about a half GB free space. This was on an 80 GB partition on which Windows is located. I ran Disk Cleanup and there is still only a bit less than 3 GB free space. I took a quick look at the properties of each folder at the root of C drive and found that the C:\Windows folder occupied about 48 GB. Isn't this way too much? Could this be related to Windows 10 to which we never upgraded? I'll look a little further this weekend to see if I can locate the bulk of the files, but I'm guessing I'm going to have to remove some Windows Updates or something, and if so, I'll likely need a little coaching on that.

I am a tech and have done over 30 clean installs and cant figure out what the heck is going on with large as in 1gig or more file transfers hanging up. All clean installs with tests done immediately after activation and updates. This is a MS problem. I have tried all the various fixes and find that the C drive seems to handle network files best. In multidrive situations turning off the Remote Differential Compression also seems to help. Please get a hot fix as this is on multiple machines and very easy to duplicate. I would say it would be a rare install not to lock from a C drive to a D drive when file sizes are more then 2 gigs. You guys are running out of time. I am a consultant and I'm ready to get sick over a great operating system that's worthless for large video files.

A:Large Files are locking up Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit

Did you try this one

Apparently you need to tell Windows that you want to use the machine as a file server and that it should allocate resources accordingly.  Set the following registry key to ‘1′:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache
and set the following registry key to ‘3′:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size
After making these changes and restarting, I haven’t seen this issue arise again

A:Windows 8 is an extraordinarily large piece of poo

Hi there
As a new member you are showing an awful lot of arrogance here -- in any case all programs are really applications so there's nothing wrong in calling a program an application -- can't see what the problem is.

You also mention Windows 8 which is now obsolete and has been replaced by Windows 8.1 which is a lot better and if you don't like the metro desktop you NEVER have to see it.

Apart from missing the standard start menu - which you can easily replace either by a 3rd party (usually free) application or custom toolbars or both you can make it look and behave identically to W7 which certainly was regarded as a good OS.

Now if you were referring to the ways Ms is choosing to implement updates etc (via the store rather than full ISO's) then your post might havce some merit - otherwise it simply adds totally NOTHING and doesn't enhance your reputation ONE IOTA. If you REALLY hate W8 so much just disappear and let others get on sensibly on this Forum.

Cheers

I know this is supposed to be a Windows 7 forum, but my problem is on a Windows XP machine. A lot of you experts learned your stuff on XP so probably have a good idea what the problem might be.

I have an HP XW4100 computer that I use to store backups. It doesn't have to be fast, and XP has worked well on that machine.

It has IDE and SATA ports on the motherboard, and I have added 2 x 4TB Seagate HDs connected to the on-board SATA ports. Using Seagate DiscWizard, I am able to split those drives into a 2tb and 1.6tb drive each so XP can partition and format them with MBR. So far so good.

Wanted to add some more 4TB drives, but there's no more SATA ports on the motherboard. Bought a Vantec PCI SATA card which uses the SiL 3114 chip and has 4 internal SATA ports. Installed the drivers, and when pluggin in an older 500g WD SATA drive, the OS sees it, I can partition it and use the drive.

When I plug a Seagate 4TB drive into that controller (even one that works with the MB SATA port), I can see the drive in device manager, Seagate DiscWizard can see the drive and partition it, but the drive will not show up in Disc Management so I can't use it.

I would conclude from this that the SiL 3114 chip has issues with large hard drives, while the Chipset on my HP has no problems. Strange though that the drive shows up in Device Manager and DiscWizard. Seems like a driver issue, but I've tried all the SiL drivers, and as I say, a smaller older SATA drive works fine.

Hi guys,

My C drive is getting full and I have 5GB of files in the C:\Windows\Installer folder. I google'd around and found numerous articles/posts about running a command "msizap.exe G!" to properly clear out un-needed files.

Everything I've found on properly deleting files from this directory points back to a download that used to be here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

which now has a note: "This article previously contained a link to the Windows Installer Cleanup utility (MSICUU2.exe). If you were directed to this article to solve a problem installing a product other than Microsoft Office, please contact your software manufacturer for installation support on the product."

(thanks Microsoft... do I contact YOU then??)
Does anyone know the current correct procedure to clear out this folder? Or if this tool is still available somewhere? (and safe to use on Windows 7)

Thanks
