# IE 7 closes immediately not IE options in Control Panel

Q: IE 7 closes immediately not IE options in Control Panel

I have a XP Home machine that whenever I startup IE 7.0, it closes right away (within a few seconds). It looks like it will start
loading the page, then just closes. Also in my Control Panel, there is a icon for Internet Options (without the "Internet Options" text
lable), but I cannot click or do anything with it. I also can not right click on the IE icon and get to the properties. I have run Spybot
to no avail. I tried re-installing IE 7.0 (downloaded from another machine). It went through the whole install and said it installed
haven't installed them yet and that is where I sit. IE still does the same thing currently. I did notice in the hosts file there is a entry
of "216.203.102.48 SC00102". I'm not sure what that is, maybe dealing with my wireless connection? Before I reinstalled IE, I took
it out, restarted and it didn't make a difference. One thing (before I re-installed IE) I did was to put "c:\windows\ie7\intcpl.cpl" into
"c:\windows\system32\intcpl.cpl" and that got my Internet Options back (their gone again now), but it didn't fix the closing out issue.
Some things I have yet to try that I plan on doing after researching on the web:

- Making sure that Windows Firewall and SecureIT Firewall are both not running
- Run HijackThis and get rid of any BHO with no names
- Try to install the IE updates it says are available
- Try installing IE8
- Making sure there are no toolbar 'helpers' in add/remove programs
- If all else fails, I'll restore back to a earlier registry (issue is a week old or so)

Other than that I have really looked all over the Internet and haven't found many that have a solution to this issue. Does anyone have any
other ideas?

I REALLY REALLY appreciate any and all help. Thanks a LOT!!!!

My guess would be that your system is infected...and I'm no expert.I suggest that you post at BleepingComputer.com - Am I infected What do I do - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/ If it turns out that you are not infected...that would be the time to pursue your system issues, IMO.Louis

Hi all,
I am new to Vista and have had it on my new Toshiba Satellite L300D for only a couple months. There are SOME programs in my Control Panel such as Networking, Performance and System that, when I click on them, pop open for a split second and then close. Anyone seen this before? I have done a system restore with no change. I have run AVG scans, Windows Defender and nothing is found.

One day also, my Gadgets disappeard (not the sidebar, just the Gadgets) and the option to Restore Gadgets is grayed out. In general it is acting wonky. Any help? Thanks.

Seriously. What?

I click Control Panel. The window then opens and closes really fast! I opened/closed other folders and programs w/o this problem. It's just the CP. Restarting doesn't help.

I haven't downloaded anything suspicious lately either. This PC was just built like less than a month ago and the install was a fresh one.

Thanks for any help.

Edit: btw the same thing happens when I search for control panel in the windows menu startup thing (... what is it called?) and click the link that shows up.

A:Control Panel windows closes milliseconds after opening it...

You could have a malware problem. I sugest running a complete virus, spyware/adware scan and download HighjackThis and post your log in the security section for someone to analyize. If you need a good spy/adware program I suggest Windows Defender. It is pre installed on Vista you may have to turn it on. It will let you know when you click on it in the start menu. I hope this helps you. Please let us know how you are making out with this.

Hi,

I'm following the instructions on what to do before I post a HJT log and can't seem to adjust the hidden file/folder settings.

This means I cannot ensure all hidden folders are displayed for the HJT log.

I goto control panel but cannot find a "folder options" file, I have also tried safe mode but still the same. I am using XP.

Any help is very much appreciated please.

Thanks,

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel"
Please tell me what this means and what to do.

A:Folder Options control panel

It means you tried to open a file with an extension unknown to WinXP. For instance, lets say you want to open a text file and view it's contents. The file will likely have a name, such as "Document", and an extension, such as, "txt". The entire file name would be Document.txt. In this case, when you click on that file, it would open in Notepad, the free text view supplied by Windows.

If you try to open a file with an extension unknown to Windows, you'll get the message shown in your post.

Most files with unknown extension are not meant to be opened by the user because they contain code and aren't really readable. They generally come as part of installed software. So, if you have, let's say, Quicken on your computer, the vast majority of files in the folder 'Quicken' would give you that message if you tried to open them as they are used by the program itself to operate.

File associations that ARE to be opened by the user, such as a jpg file (picture file), that you can download from the internet, need a program to open them. And generally, that association is set during install of a program. If the association becomes lost or broken, you can reinstall that program.

If you have a specific file you'd like to open, what is its extension?

I know how to get into the file types in the folder options control panel but I don't know what to do from there to remedy. I don't even see Open Office 2.2 in there its still version 1.1. The same could be wrong with Encarta as it was a newer version of it that I installed also.

I recently had my Lenovo Ideapad 100S-14IBR serviced and there was a swap out of the motherboard and harddrive.   Before the servicing, my machine had an Elan touchpad.  After the servicing, I now have a Synaptics touchpad.  This is all well and good, but I have no control over customizing the scrolling and clicking of the point.  I am able to open the Synaptics Control Panel, though the options for changing "Tap," "Drag & Drop," and other functionalities are not available to me to customize (i.e. they are greyed out).  I've updated the driver with the options available for my machine from the Lenovo website, and I have tried to update the driver via the files available from the Synaptics website.  However, no success.  Granted, this issue is not critical when it comes to the functionality of my machine, it is quite annoying and does make typing / navigating the interface difficult.  Any advice/insight would be appreciated.

Dear Sir

Suddenly I noticed this small problem in my computer.
Clicking on -Start-Control Panel-Other options- I discovered that the option "Software explorer " is dissapeared .
I dont know if there is a connection but recently I've installed and run Kaspersky KIS 2009 and Windows deskbar. The first program has find out some vulnerability but anyway has removed nothing the second did simply his job and now I've the research bar on my screen.
For the rest I did nothing unusual and so I don't understand what's happened.I'd be very glad if someone could give me a tip.

A:XP control Panel other options software explorer

I don't see a "other options" in control panel in xp. The closest I can see is in Windows Vista and it's called "additional options" but I don't see a "software explorer" in there.
I think software explorer is accessible from within Windows Defender, under tools, unless you have a control panel applet installed by a third party program.

So yeah, this problem started a few days ago. My college has had trouble with a virus lately and i know i picked it up on my pen drive, i didnt beleive i had caught the virus when i put my pen drive into my computer but there was a big rumble with my firewall trying to block it.

Anyway, now if i try to open "Internet Options" in the control panel or in my browser, nothing happens except for a window appears to flash on screen for less than a second.
Also, i am browsing the internet using IE7 at the minute because when i try to load firefox, my screen freezes and i have to restart via the button on my computer. I originally could not delete firefox from my computer, but i have managed to now, i also tried to reinstall firefox and see if it did anything, but the problem just stays the same.

I am aware there are similar threads to this claiming that they cannot open their control panel, which made me think it might not be the virus afterall, but none of the solutions seemed to work and i have heard nothing about their internet browser freezing. I also find it strange that i can run IE7, so i think it must be something to do with my default browser.

Also, i have ran AVG and Adware etc, they found a few things and got rid of them but it has not fixed the problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated guys, sorry about the essay i've written here :P.

Hello and welcome to TSF

I would recommend that you go here; read and follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, to here. (Just click on the coloured links.)

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Hey! To delete my files/cookies etc from the computer I normally go to Control Panel then click on Internet Options. But recently when I click on internet options, it pops up on the screen for less than a second then it closes. It used to work perfectly before so I can't explain why this keeps happening, I really need to delete stuff from my pc but the internet options screen wont stay up long enough to allow me to do this!

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Thanx

A:[SOLVED] **Help** Control Panel -> Internet Options

Hello Jeri, Welcome to TSF!

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow …please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Please post back with the result, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

Hi - How do I "re - activate" the internet options icon in the control panel ? thx. -

A:no internet options icon in control panel

Hi

The Internet Options Control Panel Extension is the file called inetcpl.cpl and can be found under C:\Windows\System32.
Check to make sure the file exists.
If the file does not exist you can run System File Checker.
To do this go to Start -> Run -> type sfc /scannow -> ok
SFC usually requires your Windows XP CD. Insert it when requested.
SFC should replace the inetcpl.cpl file as it is one of the protected Windows files.

Note that you could also have a restriction in place that prevents the Internet Options icon from displaying in Control Panel.

I have only just noticed this issue when trying to open Sibelius 6 (music notation software) or Sonar X1. They both hang on starting and I have also noticed that in Control Panel, the Sound tab itself is unresponsive and won't open the next menu level. The same with 'manage audio devices' in the sub menu underneath it. I have a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface, which plays back audio fine. I have tried reinstalling the drivers for the Saffire to no avail, but this seems more like a Windows problem. Has anyone got any clues, as my work relies on me creating music and I just can't see another solution except reinstalling Windows, which would be a pain given the amount of stuff I have installed already

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A:Sound options in Control Panel unresponsive

I have Sonar X1c and a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (firewire) and an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R (USB).
I only use the Saffire Pro 40 or Fastrack Ultra 8R for recording. I have a separate PCI sound card that I use for "regular" PC audio.

I did have some problems with other ASIO devices in Sonar. I used to have a SoundBlaster sound card and that had ASIO drivers. When Sonar started it would look for the SoundBlaster and set that as the default device in Sonar. I finally dumped the SoundBlaster card for an HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card for PC sound. The Striker 7.1 does not have any ASIO drivers. That fixed the Sonar problem.

First thought with the Focusrite unit is to make sure you have the latest Windows 7 drivers and also that it is showing up in the Windows Device Manager as "working properly", to start. USB devices, if the "Safely Remove Hardware" is not used to stop the device before disconnecting or powering off can cause the device status to be corrupted. When this happens you can connect the unit but instead of it showing as an audio device, it will show up as an "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager USB section. When this occurs, you have to uninstall the device in the Device manager, then physically disconnect the unit from the PC, restart the PC and after Windows starts, connect it and Windows should detect new hardware and reinstall it. This usually fixes this type of problem.

The power options is visible but clicking on it has no apparent effect i.e. nothing happens.
I noticed it because I wished to change the behaviour of the laptop itself.
I hadn't loaded any XP updates lately so I am assuming that that is not an issue.

Hello, I'm using Win7 x64 Ultimate edition.

Three days ago I did a clean install of my OS because it was having STOP messages regarding memory dump problems and issues with some drivers I had updated because I thought it would fix something. Anyways -- as I was setting everything back up on my computer and doing several hundred Windows Updates, before 100% of them were complete I installed Microsoft Silverlight, which failed to install (I had installed a few other programs like Java, Flash, Flashwave.) I know I know, I should've been more patient. But the only one which failed to install was Silverlight, the others were completely fine.

So yesterday I was going to watch something on Netflix and then I remembered my Silverlight hadn't properly installed. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but got an error saying it didn't install properly. So I uninstalled again, then manually checked my C: drive and the Silverlight folder still had a bunch of files. I tried to manually delete them, but I got a warning box saying the files can't be deleted or moved because they are corrupt or don't exist.

I ran chkdsk with auto-repair enabled and it indeed killed the corrupt Silverlight files, BUT it also ate the Power Options from my Control Panel, which kinda sucks because I wanted to change the settings on how long my display stays/sleeps and whatnot. Power Options shows up under All Control Panel Items as an existing thing, but to the left of it the icon was a que... Read more

I have been trying to get help. When you go into control panel and press Internet and network connections, then internet options, it doesn't load, execute, etc. The other icons are working but not that one. What do I do? I called Microsoft, they want \$. I think it disappeared after trying to download the Internet Explore 7 which is another problem.

Can you open Internet Options inside Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options?

If not, try: Restore Internet Options

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Reboot.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Ok..

I'm working on a client's office computer... I was called in because the user had a fake A/V popup, so I ran a couple programs (Super Anti-Spyware and Malware bytes anti-malware) and cleaned it up. About 1 1/2 weeks later, I get another call because the user somehow got Incredimail on her computer and it kept popping up messages, and she can't get into a work-related site (the link wouldn't open, other users in her office can open the link). I removed Incredimail after much searching on how to do it. Their off-site 'corporate' IT personnel mentioned they couldn't help her... a day or two later, I hear that she and her boss tried to do a system restore to fix the issue (system restore came up after reboot saying it couldn't restore to the previous point)....

Now, when the user attempts to open IE7, a IE7 window without any of the regular "file/options/view, etc..." buttons or any toolbars appears, tries to load the home page, and the IE7 window closes. Also, there is no internet options in the control panel

Here is what I tried:

un/re-install of IE7 ---- no luck.
Installed Firefox, works perfectly, so problem is limited to IE.
Took drive home, installed as USB external drive to my laptop, ran three different anti-malware scans on it, came out relatively clean.
Checked HKCU/Control Panel for the 'don't load' key, and the inetcpl.cpl is not listed.
Nothing in the control.ini file at all

Power problem

Hi, Im having a few issues with my... POS computer :/ now, I need to look at my power options because my computer keeps shutting down unexpectedly like *Snaps finger* That. yah know?. its not like my game closes and the computer goes to shut down. it just ..Turns off. now i have a suspicion that its my power box that's doing this. to much power is being used and it..well, shuts off. or my graphics card is too hot or something and it shuts off because of that perhaps. But sometimes it does this and my card is cool.

But anyways I need to look at my Power options but when i click on it ...Nothing happens. that little loading sprite appears on my mouse cursor for like, a split second and then nothing. IT JUST WON'T OPEN.
I looked at other forums that showed me where a spare copy of power options is deep in the computer's files, i clicked on that and same thing happened, Nothing. it just won't let me get into my power options. idk wtf is going on with that. like, is there a way to FORCE it to open? O_O idk do something that makes it open? is there a program i can download to fix this? theres one for the Recycle bin. :/

It's the same with my Search function as well, i click on it and it won't open. there isn't even a loading sprite, it just doesn't work. A:My Power options in The Control panel WILL NOT open (among other things)

If you are unable to open certain system windows, I would suspect system file corruption. However, you probably shouldn't start in power options, as these options generally control your pc when idle. You should start by looking in the event viewer for any error messages. When your system restarts randomly, it is essentially BSODing, but the current settings tell it to automatically restart. This usually happens due to faulty hardware or corrupt drivers.

control panel --> administrative tools --> event viewer --> system filter (on left of window) please respond with any error messages that appear around the time of random restarts.

Also recommended:
check your hard drive for errors:

windows key + R --> type in cmd --> press enter --> type "chkdsk /r /f c:" --> press enter

This will take a good bit of time depending on the size of your HDD. It will check and attempt to repair errors on your hard drive.

Check for system file integrity:

In the same command prompt --> type "sfc /scannow" --> press enter. (you may need to place your windows cd/dvd in the drive for this)

This will check the windows files to verify that they are authentic. (i.e not corrupt/hijacked by virus)

Hello.

I am having some difficulty describing exactly what my problem is, because the many issues I'm experiencing seem to be unrelated. I'll just give a list of the symptoms that I have noticed:

1) Some things simply do not work. When I click "connect to...." from the start menu, I sometimes get a blank window which simply freezes and does not respond to alt+f4. This is also true for vista's backup and restore center and the "system restore" option. This isn't even always true; Sometimes they load, but just extremely slowly.

2) When I use ctrl+alt+delete, and select task manager, the task manager seemingly loads (it appears in the taskbar), but I see no window and right clicking and left clicking does nothing. This also happens when I load the task manager directly from system32.

3) I'm trying to install spybot search and restore right now. It stalls forever on one of the steps. (specifically, getting file information during 'download') Hitting cancel brings up "Do you want to cancel this download?" Hitting yes either does absolutely nothing or takes an extremely long time to cancel the install (I ignored this window for about 5 minutes and was surprised when I saw it had closed seemingly on its own.)

4) Some programs seem to be taking much longer to get started, but not taking longer after that.

5) Turning off the computer either takes forever or a very very long time.

6) A few times several weeks ago, and a few times a fe... Read more

Hi guys. I have a strange problem. I've seen lots of people complaining about the Internet Options Control Panel icon vanishing, but in my case I still have it, but the label has vanished (image attached).

The internet options item is still available in Internet Explorer, and in both cases the options dialog appears as normal. I have IE7 but a few weeks ago I installed and then uninstalled IE8. I wonder if that could be the culprit (I hadn't noticed the Control Panel problem before today.)

I checked the registry entry at:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A3DD4F92-658A-410F-84FD-6FBBBEF2FFFE}

and couldn't see anything obviously wrong. The "LocalizedString" entry seems a likely candidate for giving the control panel title.

I don't believe I have a malware problem. I keep my system pretty well protected and clean.

Any ideas?

Hi! I have a Samsung 2333HD monitor and 2 SLI'd 3GB GTX 580 GPU's. I was checking out the settings in the Nvidia control panel yesterday and noticed RGB color was set to 16-235, every time I update the drivers it reverts to that setting. Well I have had it that way for months and didn't realize it, so I switched to Full 0-255 and it made a night vs day difference! Played some (modded) Alien Isolation and the colors were way better! Then I noticed another setting today called "Output Color Depth" and it only has 8bpc as an option, while some others online seem to have 10,12 and 16 bpc options. I've heard something about this before when I read Alien Isolation was designed to support higher color depths. So I guess what I'm asking is what exactly is bpc and how do I get the higher settings? Do I need a better HDMI? Or does my monitor just stop at 8bpc?
I rarely game only playing occasionally every few weeks so I'm not to concerned whether or not my games support it. Though I use my PC daily to run an image slideshow and would like the best possible color.
Thanks guys!

A:Nvidia Control Panel Color Depth Options

Oh I should have mentioned the Nvidia Control Panel has a "Desktop Color Depth" option which is set to 32Bit, and then a "Output Color Depth" option which is set to 8bpc. I'm concerned about the "Output Color Depth".

Hi Everyone,

I have been struggling with getting my SLI to work.

System:
| i7-2770k 3.5gHz | ASUS P8Z68-V Pro | 2x4gb Kingston Hyper X | PoV Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 1gb | Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 1gb | Cougar 750watt PSU | Windows 7 Enterprise |

The VGA cards are:
Connected to power.
Connected correctly on the Mother Board.

My Mother Board is SLI compatible.
My PSU is SLI compatible.
My drivers are installed and up to date.
I have re-installed my drivers as well.
I have updated my Bios as well. (During which my Primary drive got corrupted and I had to start all over)

Nvidia Control Panel is STILL not giving me any SLI configuration options. It detects that both VGA cards are connected and I can select which core to use, but nothing about SLI.

I'm stuck and need to be pointed in the right direction.

A:Nvidia Control Panel doesn't show SLI options

I know you said you've updated the bios but have you checked for settings related to SLI in the BIOS? There may be a setting to enable it.

Also from some of the forums I've read, people have resolved a similar issue by rolling back the Realtek Ethernet driver, apparently this is related to the Z68 boards. May be worth a shot at least since updating the driver would be simple enough.

hi to all:

i'm using a Dell Latitude D600 notebook with W2K SP4

my problem:

when i click the Adminstrative Tools and Fonts icons using the Control Panel Folder (path:Start Button/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tool OR Fonts), no Administrative Tool nor Fonts folders come out.

i already checked the path the Fonts icon uses and it shows the correct path i.e. WINNT/FONTS. As for the Administrative Tool, I have no idea at all.

2ndly, when using the Explorer, I used to have the Advance Tab in the Folder Options, but for some reason, after I uninstalled most of my softwares, approx 28 uninstalled softwares ( I decided to run and maintain a 'lean' notebook), whenever I open the Folder options menu in the Explorer, I only get the File Types and Offline Tabs. It's important for me to get the Advance Tab back since I use this tab in conjuntion with the improved Advance option reg file found in MDGx.com.

The odd thing is everything acts normal except for the 2 'quirks' aforementioned.

Any help is much appreciated.

I'm posting a new thread because I've also lost my sound and get the rundll32.exe error and see no answers in other threads.
This is a seven year old Dell 8300 running Windows XP with a Pentium 4 processor and what the invoice refers to as "Integrated Audio". We played an old version of You Don't Know Jack a year or so ago and lost the sound almost immediately thereafter (coincidence?). I subsequently installed a new sound card from an abandoned computer and had sound for about five minutes. When I restart the computer my speakers make a brief 'blurp' on opening Windows. I've tried every troubleshooting possibility imagineable thus far but to no avail.
It occurred to me to uninstall the old driver but when I attempt to access the "install/uninstall" option from the control panel I receive an error message: "Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe". This error message also pops up when I attempt to access most any option in the control panel. Could these problems be related and is there a common fix..? It would be nice to work again with my iPod, etc. Thank you for any help..!

I opened Encarta Encyclopedia 2004 and typed in "Ireland" and clicked. The "Ireland" page appeared and when I clicked on a box titled "Listen to radio from Ireland" I received the following message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

How do I create such an association?

I believe that this problem may have resulted from something I did last night. I downloaded a program called MYIE2 and did not like using it, so I removed it. Afterward when I clicked on my IE desktop icon I received the following message:

Windows cannot find MYIE.exe. This program is needed for opening files of type 'File.' Type in the executable file to be used instead.

I figure that removing MYIE2 almost certainly caused this problem and may also be the cause of my Encarta problem described above.

Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Bill

A:How do I create an association in the Folder Options control panel?

You need to install that program again and then remove it cleanly by using the Add/Remove in Control Panel or else follow the instructions in any readme file that comes with it. It should restore the functionality of your Desktop IE icon when uninstalled properly.

Since this problem just started last night, you should try running System Restore and selecting a date earlier than the problem. That would be the easy out.

For the last couple weeks, I haven't been able to access the Windows Update page, or many other control panel functions. If I click on Windows Update, Backup and Restore Center, or Security Center (among others), nothing at all happens. I've tried to go to the Windows Update webpage, and it looks like it will open, then immediately closes. If I go to the Microsoft Update page, it's completely blank. No error codes or anything, just blank. Also, on Facebook, I can't "like" anything, or comment on someone's status. Several of the games aren't working either.

Probably not coincidentally, at about the same time, I started getting a message at startup saying something (I don't remember the exact phrasing) about reverting back to the original theme due to a conflict with another program, and also one that says "Runtime Error - Program: C:\Program Files\Dell|Media Direct\PCMService.exe" stating that the application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

When this started, I was running AVG Free, not sure which version. When an AVG scan didn't pick anything up, I switched to Norton 360, which didn't find anything either, so I re-installed AVG Free 9.0. In addition to AVG and Norton, I've run Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes, Windows Defender (although I get an error when I try to update it). None of them have found anything. You can access Event Viewer from Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc so you don't have to access it from Control Panel. Look for red errors in System and Application that occured at the same time as your problem. The event logs may contain useful information about the cause.

Let me say this before I say anything else, I am NOT a fan of registry cleaners. I do not trust them BUT of the registry cleaners out there the safest and least intrusive by far is the one built into Ccleaner. I would recommend you try running that to see if it helps. You can also check out Revo uninstaller as it will clean up this kind of thing as it uninstalls.

Or you can just follow the path's and delete them manually.

I am not able to record or hear sounds from my office based Packard Bell laptop running MS Windows XP Professional SP2.

The mixer device is Realtek AC97 Audio which appears to be installed and running OK. The driver is also current.
The attached speakers and Logitech headphones work OK on my personal laptop and are plugged properly.
The control panel volume options are grayed out for both "Device Volume" and "Speaker Settings" in Sounds And Audio Devices Properties.
I am using Windows Default Sounds.
There are no error flags on the "sound, video or game controllers" under Device Manager.
Sound playback default device is Realtek AC97 Audio and sound recoring default device is Logitech USB Headset. MIDI music playback default device is Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth.
Voice playback default device is Realtek AC97 Audio (using laptop speakers selected) and sound recoring default device is Logitech USB Headset.
Troubleshooting has not pointed to any problems.
The problem surely rests with the grayed out volume options with the volume slide set to 0. From my many attempts to Google a solution I am of the opinion that this is not an uncommon problem.

Cheers

I am getting an exception errror relating to a powercfg.cpl problem on a WindowsXP Pro SP3 system. (Sony VAIO laptop). I can run other .cpl files but I get an error message about powercfg.cpl when I try running "power Options" in the control panel or running the .cpl file from Start|RUN. I have backed up the 3 powercfg related files in system32 and replaced them with files from my XP Pro SP3 desktop system but it still works the same.

The exact error message is <An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\WINDOWS\system32\powercfg.cpl",">

I really don't want to reload the system for this small error...but I don't just want to live with it either.

Hi there. I have been trying to open Internet Explorer and it tries to open and then just closes without loading. I looked at previous posts, and I realized I cannot open Internet Options in the Control Panel either. I have tried to run the sfc \scannow and a black window opens and closes before I can read it or even see the words in the window. I have tried to run in safe mode and that does not work either. I have tried to boot in Safe Mode with Networking and it says that my internet connection is working fine (and my Mac laptop is connecting to the internet through the same connection). Also, McAfee will not load and I cannot uninstall it. I think McAfee might have it's own virus that is causing the problems. Please help!

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

Good evening,

I've noticed a difference in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization between editions of Windows 10.

My wife's laptop is running Windows 10 Home, and her personalization screen looks like this:

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise, and my personalization screen looks like this:

Notice that the menu options on the left, and quick access to change the theme settings on the bottom are missing from the enterprise screenshot.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it simply a difference between editions? Or is there a setting that is not turned on in my installation?

I have downloaded IE11 directly from Download IE Here Before that though I tried getting IE9, 10 and 11 through the Windows Update process. IE8 works on my laptop but I cannot get Direct x to function properly on http://www.moac.microsoftlabsonline.com I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling via the "Turn Windows features on or off" section of the control panel. Also reset IE through the control panel. Followed the instructions from this page as well. Internet Explorer opens, flashes, and then closes immediately when you start it Here is the link to the thread that suggested I seek help here.

Other browser (Firefox) works fine. I rarely use IE and only need it now to do the lab work for the 2 MOAC courses I am taking.

This is primarily a informational post for those interested.. I found this post http://forums.techguy.org/malware-r...regedit-msconfig-closes-immediately-upon.html and wanted to reply but it was closed.

I just copied my drive over using Western Digital's Data Lifeguard utility. Upon rebooting (and making sure the new drive was selected in the bios to boot from) I encountered 2 problems..

1: the boot menu (which had not previously been enabled) now showed two entries for "Default system", both which worked, but was annoying to me..
2: msconfig would not work for me to check the startup and boot.ini.

I ran through a lot of steps trying to get msconfig to work again.. copied the file to a different location, rename it as a different filename, check for virus/malware, even copied it from my laptop, and checking the registry entries.. Nothing would let this program run!
As far as antivirus programs, I run Avast! .. I was POSITIVE I had no virus malware, etc. Even still, I ran a boot time virus sweep. NOTHING found. Even ran HijackThis.. again nothing. After MUCH searching on Google and even these forums, I simply resigned myself that I was going to need to do a repair install (which I hate doing). I decided to check one last thing first.. manual edit of the boot.ini.

When I opened it up and compared to my laptop running the same version of the OS (Win XP Pro sp3) I noticed it was missing an entry .. the information under [operating systems] (second entry) was b... Read more

Its wise to make sure when you are doing updates and Service Packs to make sure the system is 100% malware free. With that said, why wold the SP3 not install? Did you recieve an error and if so what was the EXACT error message?

I am having the same problem. I have tired resetting, I ran sfc and no issues were found. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling. Also tried the tweaks from majorgeeks.com. I have tried IE9 via update and IE11 via update and also from downloading. Also I just finished a clean install on a tower and have the exact same issues there. I am desperate here. I need IE to complete MOAC labs. Both machines are running Win7 64bit. Laptop has Home Premium and the new tower is Pro. Both machines have the OS on one partition with registry point program files to a second partition.

Hi All,

Internet Explorer (7 and 8) will open and close immediately under Vista Home Premium. I have tried the following:

1) Run IE in no adds-on mode. Does the same thing.

2) Reset all settings under the Internet Options Panel---when it gets to the third part 'Applying Default Settings' it fails.

3) Run Malware Malabytes in Safe Mode---nothing detected.

4) Install IE8 (wasn't working back when it was IE7), still no luck. Uninstalled back to IE 7, no working, and then back to IE8.

So, any ideas? I normally use Firefox and Opera, but there is one specific work-related website that requires some ASP scripting that neither Firefox or Opera can handle!

Thanks!

A:XP SP3 - IE7 opens and closes immediately

You can try to run the following command to see if any DLL files are missing/damaged.

sfc /scannow

Try also the install folder of the app you use with IE7, if there is a DLL called PSAPI.dll
if there is delete it or rename the file.

I just installed AIMMusicLink and all of a sudden AIM won't work. I try to run it and the screen flashes really quick and then closes. I uninstalled the music link program, reinstalled AIM 6.8, uninstalled 6.8 and installed 6.9 beta and then gave up and started using 5.9 which does work. Any ideas to why 6.8 won't work? I even searched the registry and deleted everything that had to do with musiclink but it still didn't work.

IE 11 opens and then closes immediately. The only way to open IE 11 is to right click on IE shortcut, select properties, then set to open minimized. Then click IE 11 on toolbar, and it opens. Setting IE 11 to Normal or Maximized causes IE 11 to open then immediately close. I have removed then re-installed IE 11, ran malewarebytes and ccleaner but IE 11 still has the same problem. I turned off GP rendering. I am out of ideas, does anyone have any other methods to try?

Run CCleaner-Slim or CCleaner-Portable & remove everything it finds, then try IE11 again. If that doesn't do it, go to Internet Options > Advanced tab, then click the reset button located near the bottom.https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/b...

I am unable to access IE (Win XP home edition)
The IE white screen opens and then closes after a few seconds. I have tried to do a system restore - and I can't even get that to open.

I have attached the output from Hijackthis. When I attempted to run the dss tool, it was unable to complete. I tried several times and recieved a Windows error - "dss.exee has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Thanks
