Hard Disk not being recognized in My computer

Q: Hard Disk not being recognized in My computer

I just recently bought a Samsung 3.5 500GB HD (HD502IJ) and I've already detected it using on my mobo Bios as a slave and is connected via SATA. I have another 160 HD installed via SATA and that is also being detected. My OS is WinXP SP2 and it is installed on a 160gb via IDE.

When I installed the 500GB HD I cannot see it under Disk Management nor under my computer but it appears on the task bar where it says I can safely remove the hardware, kinda like being recognized as a flash drive or something.

How can I make my computer recognize the new HDD.

I just rebuilt an old system using Windows 7 Home Premium after using WinXP pro for many years. The primary hard drive is WDC 150 Mg and Win7 is installed and updated to current with SP1. I dropped a second WDC hard drive in, formatted and was going to use it for a 2nd backup unit. Both of these are sata. Both hard drives are recognized by Disk Management but when I select Computer on the start menu ONLY the primary 150 Mg drive is recognized. If I plug in an external drive, both Computer and Disk Management recognizes the external drive. How do I have Win7 recognize my backup WDC drive so I can use it.

Thank you

Had similarities on my pc.

Goto BIOS, there you have 4 options.

Primary Master
Secondary Master

Primary Slave
Secondary Slave

Set it as follows:

Primary Master -----> Main Boot HDD
Secondary Master -----> EMPTY

Primary Slave -----> CD/DVD RAM
Secondary Slave -----> Secondary backup HDD
Hpe it helps!

I've been having this problem for a few months now. I recently built my own computer, having been on a lap top for a couple of years, and found my old external hard drive. I plugged it in to the new computer, and it said something about needing to be formatted, which I promptly did due to nothing of importance being on it. I went to sleep, and woke up to see that it couldn't be formatted.

This is where my issue begins. It no longer appears in Computer, or Disk Management. Disk Management won't even load if I have the drive plugged in. There seems to be no way at all to format the drive, since Computer, and Disk Management both don't load when the drive is plugged in. Any help?

I have a similar problem. I have an old external hard drive and it wont showed up or open under my computer or disk management. I tried to open it under disk management but there is no way to be found. The files F, G, H, etc are empty. I really appreciate an extra help here since I am not a computer expert. Thank you!!!!

I got new Desktop recently, Lenovo K450e, and when I went to plug in my external HD, Seagate 500GB, it didn't show up in either My Computer or Disk Management and there are no exclamation points next to the drivers suggesting that I would need a driver update. I plugged it into other ports on my computer with no luck but when I plug it into my laptop it works fine. I have read so many different forums with no luck. My computer is a Windows 8.1 intel core I7 processer.

A:Hard disk not recognized

Try checking your hard drive connection power and IDA or SATA.

Shut down your computer, Take the cover off now find your hard drive and check to see if the power,IDE,or SATA connection are good and snug.

If the problem still exists then repair MBR
Repairing the Master Boot Record
If you want to restore the master boot record, you can simply type in the following command in CMD:

bootrec /fixmbr

You can also write a new boot sector onto the system partition with this command (which is often more useful):

bootrec /fixboot

And of course, if you just use bootrec /? you?ll be able to see all the options.

I have a hard disk that I want to clone my C drive to, and I connected it via USB external; it showed up fine, I formatted it. However, since XP doesn't recognize boot drives through USB I wanted to attach it internally before I cloned my system drive over for when I do a boot test.

However, the drive that showed up just fine through USB isn't showing up when I plug it into the MB. It is recognized and is powering up, because when the system posts, the initial screen shows it is connected, and it gets warm after a few minutes, so it's working and the system can detect it, it is just not showing up in Windows.

I checked, and it's set to Slave.

What's the problem?

A:Hard disk not recognized?

When you say windows doesn't see it, do you just mean it does not show up in My Computer or does it not show up in Disk Management either?

If it is just My Computer that you have checked, this could be because it is not formatted, or not formatted properly, or has no Drive Letter assigned to it.

To check Disk Management, go to Start > right click my computer > Manage. In the left hand side go to Disk Management. See if the hard drive shows up in there.

If it is there, but has no drive letter, right click it and assign one, or just do another quick format since it has already been formatted.

I replaced the sound card in my HP Vectra VL series 8. The computer will not now recognize the single internal hard drive. I replaced the original card and it still says that there is no hard drive. I have checked all the cables and reseated the card. I used the Windows 98 start-up disk and it writes to the virtual disk, but still says there is no hard drive. In Setup it says, "None" following the "IDE Primary Master Device" heading.

Any help would be appreciated.

I got a virus, had to reinstall OS. Turn everything back on and one of my drives doesn't show up. I find it in disk management but it's only a 1tera and it's showing up as 80gb unallocated, 23gb unallocated, 811gb healthy (primary Partition) but that one has no file system listed, nor does it give me any other options than properties and help. A second primary 260 gb healthy primary partition that is the same as the former, then another 16gb unallocated. It's only a 1 tera drive so something is wrong here. I suck at backup and have some important stuff on there. Anybody know what I am looking at here? Thank you.

At a guess, if you've checked all the jumpers etc etc, IMo it might be the second stick of ram, try removing it and see what happens

Hello, can anyone help me with these:

I have bought new Verbatim Store N Go external hard drive (500 GB) for my HP laptop, which only supports USB 2.0.

Windows XP PS3 cannot recognize the device, once connected with 2.0 USB. If I try to connect it at friends laptop, it works instantly in 3.0 hub but also doesnt work with the 2.0 hub on the same computer, which runs Vista (it says USB device is not recognized)

I have followed the recomendations about disabling infcache.1 in c:\windows\inf\, still no success.

Thanks for any useful advice.

Sorry to join the group and start with a problem!

It all started a few weeks ago, my computer started to have problem to boot I used to receive a message "K BOOT FAILURE INSERT DISK AND PRESS ENTER", I had to turn the computer off and on and once every 20 or 30 attempts I was lucky to start Windows XP. I contacted HP and they asked me to disconnect the HD and reconnect it, did not work.
HP suggested to try recovering Windows XP, but didn't work either.

I assumed the problem was the hard drive, so I bought a new Seagate 200 GB and intalled it as master and the old as a slave, to do that I had the problem of booting it, I discovered that pressing F8 (safe mode) my computer started correctly.

So installed the new disk, re-installed Windows XP, installed SP2 yesterday and today I have the same problem, but the message is different "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I have not been able to boot even with F8.

While enetring BIOS it does not recognize the HD's, and yesteday while installing Windows XP it recognized both perferctly!

Can somebody help me??????

A:Hard Disk Drives not recognized

go back to bios
make sure you have the boot order correct
remove the old drive make sure new one is ide channel 1 or sata channel 1
boot again if it boots yer ok
add the old drive boot again
depending on how you loaded OS
you may have kept the old drive as active boot and it is going bad
the above will check to see if you install the new drive right
no boot install again without old drive in machine
is this ide or sata or both??

hi guys,

I have been using this WD external hard disc from last one year. all of a sudden its not getting recognised in my computer. below are some details...

- I am using windows XP.
- tried restarting the laptop, no luck.
- change the USB cable that woks with another external HD.
- It is identified at the USB icon on the desktop as USB Mass storage device, but my computer will not recognise.
- In th disc management its not getting recognised.
- my laptop is recognising different hard disc drive and able to see the contents in it.

A:My external hard disk is not getting recognized

It's possible that the disk has gone bad or the controller inside the external enclosure has gone bad. One option would be to remove the drive from the external case and either install it in the PC or put it into another external enclosure and see if it works.

I currently have 2 SATA hard disks connected, then 1IDE hard disk on blue IDE slot and 2 IDE cdroms on the other IDE slot. I also have two other external drives each connected to a USB port.

The problem is that the IDE hard disk is not being recognised in BIOS, when I try to switch some settings in the BIOS IDE configuration I have managed to get it recognised but then the cdroms are not recognised, how can I get them all recognised?

Another problem I have is with the external drives. If I switch them on before the computer boots up the POST will hang, so I have to leave them off until the POST ends and switch them on while windows loads so they get recognised by windows with all their sharing settings intact. Is there a way to eliminate this annoying problem?

Hello everyone. As of last night my HP dv6000 with Windows 7 won't start. At boot, it gives the message:

PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent

I researched this problem and found that this message appears when there is no apparent source for booting an OS. This is commonly either because the hard drive isn't connected properly, or the boot order is disorganized in the BIOS, but neither are the case here.

When I run a boot disk, my hard drive is recognized and passes every integrity test. However, the Windows 7 install disk does not show any storage locations (neither my internal hard drive or any external ones I have connected to test) - except, for some reason, when I choose to browse for a driver for hardware, and then my internal hard drive (and external devices I plug in) appear intact and fully navigable. Again, that's only in the submenu of browsing for drivers that is an option after the Windows installation process fails to recognize any storage media.

Any ideas why my computer doesn't notice the hard drive when booting, but seems to in every other scenario I can test?

Yesterday while watching movie on my PC it appeared as black on the screen and stopped working. After restarting the PC it was not responding as the BIOS was unable to recognize the hard disk. It creates an unusual sound while BIOS searches drives.

1. I tried by bootting the PC using another hard disk but this HD does not appear in the windows.
2. I also tried to boot using Ubuntu live CD but failed to find my HD on it.

As it is not recognized by BIOS, I cann't use data recovery software to recover the data. I'm badly in need of all data in it.

Please someone help me in this regard to recover the data.

Try the freezer trick. Place your hard drive in zip lock freezer bag to protect it from moisture and freeze it overnight (or a few hours at least). Quickly hook up the frozen hard drive and try to boot from it. If it works, be prepared to copy your important data as soon as possible before the hard drive warms up too much. This is not a permanent fix but it may work long enough to save your data.

Hi all,

I know this is similar to at least one recent thread, but different enough to post.
I am upgrading my sister's machine from a 3.2Gb WD Caviar to a 40Gb Seagate U Series 5 drive, ST348023 from memory, ATA100.
The machine is running a K62 266, not sure of the Mobo, but obviously supports the AMD chip.
From what I have been able to glean from the Seagate site, this drive should be backwards compatible with any IDE connector, but when I stick it in, with the BIOS set to auto-detect all drives, the machine halts trying to detect the Seagate drive, although it will let me Ctrl-Alt-Del and also press Del to get into CMOS setup.
I have tried it as Primary Master, and as Primary Slave, both with the other HD on the same cable, and without it in at all.
Seagate's disk tools are able to detect that it is there, even when not setup in the BIOS. Seagate's disk wizard, which is an excellent tool for installing a new drive, told me that all I had to do was set BIOS settings to auto for that drive, and all would be rosy. It looks at what drive you have, what BIOS you have, and gives you instructions to suit. The documentation tells me that if the BIOS supports LBA and Large disk types, then all should be fine - it does.

Can anyone give me any ideas on what's going on? I have installed quite a number of hard drives in the past, but never come across anything like this.

I have a brand new Foxconn A7GM-S 2.0 motherboad which seems to be unable to recognize my two SATA hard disks. I have ensured that the power connectors and SATA cables are snug, and have tried each pair of the six SATA slots on the motherboard. I also don't hear either hard disk powering up upon boot.

This board is a replacement for my older motherboard, which died rather suddenly. Both hard disks were connected to the old motherboard at the time of its failure, which leads me to wonder if the disks are damaged beyond repair. Do motherboard failures generally affect connected hard disks? Or is my new motherboard defective?

I own a Portege 7010ct, which I want to use for driving my modeltrain, because it has a RS232 connection. The problem is however it doesnot recognise the harddisk anymore. I have bought another one which works perfectly in another laptop but when I put it in the Portege It says with the Windows installation that no harddrive is detected.

Looking in the Bios it also says that no harddisk is configured. I can't get however into the Bios to change that. Is it self detecting? What can I do to make the Portege recognize the harddisk? Thanks for helping.

Hey Willem,

As far as I know this old notebook uses HDDs with IDE interface. Normally on all HDDs with this interface you have a jumper where you can switch between Master, Slave and Cable Select.

I would recommend checking this. Set the switch to Master and try it again.

a couple thing you can do first is to test hd in another notebook,

also what you have is basiclly a harddrive in a pcmia card so all you have to do in theory is to take apart and if your notebook can take two hardrives install it (which i doubt it can) or buy an adapter and hook it up to a desktop computer ide cable the adapter cost around 5$ and i bought 1 from ebay for that porpose

I have a Simple Tech Pininfarina 320 GB external hard drive that is no longer recognized by two different PCs, even under disk management. When plugged into the USB, the PCs do try to install the driver, but fails. It is recognized under Devices and Printers as Unspecified and with the information Model-Simple Drive, Category - Unknown, and Status-Software is installing for this drive. The troubleshooter searches for a driver, but does not find one. Basically I get the information that "There is a problem wiht the driver for USB Mass Storage Device. Reinstalling the driver might fix this problem." But I cannot find a driver for this hard drive.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

A:External hard drive not recognized in Disk Management

The system is telling you that there is a problem with a USB driver, check in the Device Manager for any yellow warnings. Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers you will see a driver for USB Mass Storage Devices, right click and uninstall it then reboot, Windows should reinstall it, or go to the motherboard's manufacturer's site and download and install the latest chipset drivers..

There are two other possibilities, the hard drive has failed or the circuitry in the enclosure has develpoed a fault.

Remove the hard drive from the enclosure and (if you have access to one) hook it up to the internal connections of a dektop PC. Or, purchase a USB Hard Drive Adapter (about ?10) from a computer store or eBay and then plug it into the USB connection on any computer and see if you can then access the drive.

I want to report a very unusual virus, I think.

Dispite all attempts to clean the virus using traditional methods recommended on this site, CCLEANER, AVG, trojan removers, Spybot, on line scans, panda, HijackThis...etc...I just couldnt rid my computer of this virus.

My computer kept showing repeated disk activity which woudlnt stop - even in SAFE MODE. The activity slowed my computer down to a slow crawl, which prevented any use at all.

I rebooted with a BART'S BOOT disk, and ALL my hard drives were reported as not installed. YEOW! My main c drive was reported as empty. I went into the bios screen, and my hard drives werent detected.

So - I couldnt even REFORMAT - heaven forbid...because no matter what I did, the hard drives werent even seen by my compiuter. That was my first clue. Second clue, was that while even running BARTS BOOT disk, the repeated disk activity didnt stop.

Humm...I stopped to think...ok...shut down computer - unplug it - that worked once before - maybe it will work again. NO!
So...I opened the case, removed the BIOS BATTERY - restarted and VIOLA it worked...a quick ccleaner just to be sure and I was back!

Hope this helps someone.

At first i would get "corrupted data " messages on windows 7, but now i can't access any of its content, even though as soon as i connect it to my pc it DOES get recognized and has a letter assigned, but i just can't do anything on it.

I tried formatting it via windows but the proccess fails before even starting( it looks like any pc i connect it to, detect it at first(like a couple of seconds) but then its connection goes off even though its usb cable is perfect and i also tried connecting with several different cables just to be sure.

Then i used several programs, like "hard disk low level format tool" which as soon as i start the formatting process gives error strings and doesn't even start the process at all( remains stuck at 0%)

I also tried to use "Hard disk sentinel" program which gives it a status of 0% health and suggests me to back its data up. Too bad i just can't access it at all. it also states "REALLOCATED SECTORS COUNT"

I tried booting my pc with gparted and seeing if it could somehow formatting it and assign a new partition but it's like each program can access for a very short amount of time( the hdd led blinks as well) then it can't be accessed anymore and "gets lost" (its led stops b... Read more

A:External Hard disk Iomega 2 Tb recognized by pc but can't be formatted

Welcome to SF gabriel,

I would double check the connection by trying another USB port and changing the cable and let us know if that helps.

Sorry you tried different cables I see, does the drive show up in the bios? Does the drive have an alternate connection like esata or firewire you could try?

The Hard disk has no data, and i don't have a CD-Rom, have made my USB bootable manually using DISKPART (this method of installation has worked for me before)

I have a InsydeH2O Setup Utility
Inside the BIOS the options available to me are:-

Recently I decided to upgrade my hard disk storage space so I bought a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB SATA hard disk drive. Upon installing the drive I entered the Bios and went into "Intergrated Peripherals" section and set the BIOS to recognize P-ATA + S-ATA drives. When I reboot the new Maxtor drive shows up in Windows Explorer and functions normally. Also in Windows Explorer, my CD/DVD drive appears. However when I put a cd in the drive and click on the drive in Explorer I get the message to "Insert a disc into drive F:". The drive will not read the disc. When I went into Device Manager the CD/DVD drive shows up and says that it is functioning properly. Strange.....
So, I rebooted and reset the BIOS to the setup defaults (ie. P-ATA Drive Only) and when the computer boots up now the CD/DVD drive functions normally but the Maxtor drive is now not recognized. I understandObviously the Maxtor drive is not recognized because the BIOS is set for P-ATA drive only, but why when the BIOS is set for P-ATA + S-ATA is the CD/DVD drive not recognized?

My computer specs are as follows:

Processsor: Intel Pentium4 3.2C GHz (478pin/FSB800)
Motherboard: MSI i865G ATX
Bios: AMI Bios
RAM: DDR SDRAM 1GB (512MB x 2 / PC3200)

Issue 1 :
I have bought the current hard disk one month back due to failure of the previous one. Both are of Seagate.
My PC stuck up suddenly while working with the noise from hard disk ( clicking noise )
When I restarts the PC the PC stops booting after the BIOS screen with the error messages like "unable to load OS" or "disk not found".
If I remove and replace the hard disk connection, it works normally. But, the PC stuck up after 1 day or after few hours.
I have performed the hard disk self tests with Seatools software from Seagate. It has passed all the steps.
Why this is happening with a new hard disk?
Is the issue is with the hard disk or hard disk controller?

Is there any possibility with virus or a bad RAM can cause these clicking sounds from hard disk?

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

A:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

*My SD card is not recognized by my computer*
Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to view and help out with my dilemma.

We were out for 2 weeks water-skiing with my new SonyAction cam (basically a GoPro by sony). I used the SD card from the camera at the end of a day to view the files on my laptop but didn't copy them over as the card still had 14GB of free space. (16GB Card)

The next day I put the card into my laptop again and one of the files was corrupted , so I copied over all the files and formatted the SD card for re use the following day(Have done before card worked fine).

Now we are back and I cannot access any files on it, both on my laptop or PC!! These videos mean a lot to me, so If anyone has any idea how to get this working or a place I can take it to recover data I would very much appreciate it.
All I have managed to discover about the issue:
When I put my SD card reader into my PC without the SD card in it, (Its a USB with an SD card slot on it) the safely remove hardware appears in the system tray and plays the sound that It recognizes a connected device. The SD card is not recognized at all when I connect it to the USB reader.
Can anyone help?

- This card was working in the camera.
- I believe the card broke somehow when I plugged it into my laptop, but I didn't want to think those thoughts just yet

The equipment is good. Seagate 250gb SATA.

External Enclosure from Newegg:

It works flawlessly with any Vista computer. But on XP computers I get the same result; it is not recognized in my computer or disk management. If I fiddle with it enough I can get it to be recognized; uninstall drivers, reinstall them. restart, replug it in. Nothing is consistent, but sometimes it does indeed get recognized. But it's hard.

What happened originally was I bought it. Put it together. Installed the guy. And then I went to disk management and formatted it. I copied files to it. but when I turned it on and off it wouldn't be recognized! I plugged it into my roomates vista comp and it instantly came up and he copied files off of it.

Now I can't get it to come up in disk management or my computer EVEN though it is installed in the device manager and the safely remove hardware box comes up.

I've searched google for hours and no solutions. Please help me

also, when it is plugged in it takes my computer a really long time to boot.

Hi! I have a huge problem with my external Hard Drive.
It's a Seagate Expansion 1.5 TB. The Seagate Tech Support told me I have to send it back for replacement, but that would mean losing all my data.
The Problem: Yesterday it started making a click-clacking noise after which it stopped and wasn't recognized by the computer anymore. I tried different USB ports and even a completely different computer. At first it seemed to install the drivers and it showed that it's ready to use. When I tried opening the My Computer it didn't see it. I looked in the Device Manager - didn't find it there. If I connect the HD now for a while it makes a beeping sound which is not too loud (similar to the tone you'd hear in the receiver when you call someone on the phone) and then it stops. The data and power cables are ok, I have a green light on the hard drive.
I also tried a data recovery program as I read that it might be able to see the drive, but no such luck.
Very desperate as I really don't want to lose my data. Worst case I'd like to try and erase all the info if possible before sending it for a replacement, as the data is very sensitive and personal and I'm afraid of identity theft... ((
Please help.

I installed an external hard drive on my Dell computer. If I go to "manage" on My Computer click on device manager - it shows the drive under hard drives. When I go to Disk Manager the external drive is shown as "healthy" with one partition and a drive letter. The drive does not however appear under My Computer hence I can't write to the drive.
I have changed USB ports, renamed the drive, re-booted the computer and a number of other attempted fixes. Nothing works. There is something in my OS that is blocking the display of the external drive under My Computer.

Any suggestions - help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

A:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

I am using an Acer Aspire 5100 AMD64 notebook computer running on Debian etch, . For a while, I have been having intermittent issues while rebooting the system -- sometimes I get a system freeze with a series of messages that essentially say:

Fixed Disk 0 (with incomplete HDD model info followed by ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' characters)
0200: Failure fixed disk 0
Memory Configuration Error
Bank interleave recognized but not enabled

If I "massage" the laptop in the area where the hard drive is located, or if I pound (not quite that hard...) on the laptop, the system usually will magically boot up just fine. However, when I move the computer, like pushing it on the desk a bit, and esp. when I pack up the laptop in its case, sometimes I either get hard drive errors or can't boot the computer and have to get physical with it.

I have put in a new hard drive and the same thing happens - the computer doesn't always recognize it and boot. So I don't think this problem is specific to the HDD.

My guess is that something's loose in the computer (a HDD controller?), but I can't get into the innards of the laptop since I can't safely figure out how to pry it open (I'm pretty well versed in computers and can troubleshoot them, but mainly limited to easily-opened desktops).

Anyone have suggestions as to what may be the likeliest culprit here?

My son tried a new 80 gig ACOMDATA external drive on his MAC before he gave it to me as a gift. The drive as a new device will not initialize on my WINDOWS ME based Gateway Athlon PC. No drive letter is assigned yet the green arrow in the trough in the lower right of the desktop shows a drive with no letter assigned. MYCOMPUTER shows no new device. I read the Quickstart literature for the drive and it states that use on multiple platforms MAC & PC is available. Unfortunately it also states that to do this the drive should be started up first on the PC and second on the MAC. Since this order was not followed I suspect the drive has a MAC file system on it and the PC refuses my access to intialize it. Does anyone know how to fix this problem like' How do I reformat a disk if I have no drive letter' or does the MAC side offer some solution. So far my multiple Email's over the past 7 days to ACOMDATA have not been answered. So much for there 72 hour(3day) response time. Do I have to give this drive back to my son for his permanent use and buy a new drive? Do all USB/FIREWARE external drives have this quirky capability and init sequence requirement?

Since then whenever i try to start my pc a black screen appears saying "Select a proper boot device to boot".

I checked the boot device priority in the BIOS and found out that HDD is missing from there. However sometimes it shows itself there but still the system comes up with the same message. Someday's back i faced the same problem but that time the problem was solved when i unpluged my HDD and plugged it back. But now it is not working at all.

Can someone please tell me what is the problem with it? Is there any problem with my HDD or motherboard??

A:Hard Disk Problem. problem in booting. HDD not recognized

Most likely the hard drive. If it won't appear in BIOS, there is nothing you can do. You can't even test it. You'll have to take it out and connect it to another machine for testing.

I got a Nexxtech 3.5 Enclosure with "Maxtor DiamondMax 21 500GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, ATA-100, EIDE, OEM". My computer is a Dell, Win XP SP 3.

It has been working for a year but something happen to my computer this pass week that caused me to reboot the computer. Now the Computer will not recognized the External Hard Drive. The Enclosure has a Power-Data Light indicator and is showing Red instead of Blue. Never did figure out what that means. When plugged in, the computer will do the "ding dong" sound (as if it connected the hard drive) after a few minutes then another "ding dong" sound but different tone (as if it disconnected) after a few more minutes. Problem is that it is not showing on my taskbar for "New Hardware Detected" or "Removable Hard Drive"

I have tried Disk Management and It is NOT showing up on there. I have also tried the hard drive on other computers and getting same results.

A:Solved: Computer will not recognized External Hard Drive anymore

You need to remove the hard drive from the enclosure and either slave it to a desktop machine, and see if that machine can read it, or try the drive in another enclosure.

You have to determine if the drive is the problem, or is the enclosure the problem.

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.

A:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

My Little Asus Terminator died in december after years of good service - needless to say the hard disk is full of important data.

It was running on Win XP pro, service pack 2.

When I took the case off, I was supprised at the amount of dust covering everything - the worst i've seen - lesson there, clean the inside of the computer every year!

I had to remove the hard disk from my biggi computer, which was working perfectly, on win 98, I think its 1.2 gig proccessor.

I fitted the Asus h/disk and zip drive, switched it on, post went ok, went over to boot up - would not boot, just got an 1/2" zebra crossing line at the bottom of the screen, which went full white from left to right - then just stopped.

I reset and managed to get it to Safe Mode, it started to find driver files, then just stopped again, the screen full of file strings.

I reset again, and used the ?repair? option, but did not help.

I do not have the XP pro cd (thanks to the person I loaned it to to sort their problem out!).

Can anyone help - please!

I have just purchased a new CPU with the following specs:

Original Intel Motherboard
Core 2 Duo processor 2.8 Ghz
200GB Seagate SATA
128MB ATI graphics
USB 2.0
Windows XP Home SP2
Antivirus: Avast Home (updated till yesterday will all definitions)

I have an old CPU with 2 disks that have more than 1 virus on it. A few months ago the CPU broke down in that it doesn't boot at all (probably the battery on the motherboard). I would like to know the safest way of attaching my 2 old disks to my new CPU to clean/repair malware and retrieve important data and then format them completely for reuse.

The techinical details of my old CPU are as follows (not sure how much is relevant):

Intel Pentium III x Mhz (very old!)
128MB SD ram
10 GB Seagate SATA (Windows XP SP2 loaded onto this drive which has only 1 partition - C
40 GB Seagate SATA: 4 partitions of 10 GB each
Samsung CD-R 48x
USB 2.0 (PCI extension)

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I don't want ANY virus in my new system!

A:Attaching old hard disk to new computer

Hi KrunalDesai, and welcome to TSG!

Probably the safest and easiest way is to get a USB hard disk enclosure from your local computer shop. This will allow you to connect your old hard drive to a USB port like a flash drive, and from there you can do virus/malware scans.

Hi all,

Im expecting a new computer to be delivered tomorrow. This will have an 80gb Hard drive. We were going to give the old computer to the kids as its better than theirs, but they have a 40gb hard drive that we want to install into our new one.

I have two questions.

Question 1:
I want to make use of the old drive but Im presuming you cant have two discs with operating systems on them. How can I delete everything off the hard drive so that I can have a clean drive to install?

Question 2:
I would like to partition my hard drive so that I can have about 10gb or so for the operating system, then the rest I can use for files etc.

I thought It would be better to do this straight away before we start adding new programs and files.

Any help would be most appreciated.

You have to change the jumper situeted at the rear of the hdd from master to slave or vice versa that mean's one must be a master drive while the other should be a slave cause changing the cable as you said has nothing to do in this process

I recently bought a Western Digital firewire/USB 2.0 combo drive for my Dell laptop running Windows XP Home edition. It worked fine once. When I went to use it again it would not register in "My Computer." It is recognized in device manager and no conflicts appear. There are no new/rolled back drivers available. In Disk Management in Console it appears but shows a large portion of unallocated space. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not work.

Could there be a corrupt Windows file? Does anyone have any suggestions?

A:external hard drive not recognized in Windows XP "My Computer"

If it shows unallocated space (how much?), then the drive should be partitioned and the partitions formatted.

What sizes are we talking about? Unallocated space will not appear in My Computer, but only partitions that are formatted and ready to use.

If you have TweakUI or other tweakers, be sure that the drive is not hidden from My Computer.

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).
I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)
Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s
I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.
Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!
Thanks in advance!

A:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.
Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

I have laptop ASUS N75SF and it is a year old,so i have decided to format.I have two separate hard disks that are the same brand,SeaGate 9500423 AS, each 500 gb capacity. Before i decided to format , one of my hard disks(that is my partition D) started to make strange noises and it was not recognized, but i was using my laptop without problems because my windows was installed on my other hard disk (that is my partition C).So now my question is this :
After i formatted them both i have no clue which one is which ? they are like :
Disk 0 Partition 1 465 gb
Disk 1 Partition 2 465 gb
So how do i choose the one that is better and not having problems to pust my winodows on?
I know that i can buy new one and replace it with the one that is having problems, but right now i have no money to do that .I am student

Thanks in advance

A:USB lock & computer Hard disk drives

I would reccomend installing a good antivirus program.Unless you are going to be using lots of usb flash drives from different people or use the flash drive in lots of dodgy machines, you are more likely to get a virus online than via a flash drive. Some antiviruses (Kapersky comes to mind) will ask you every time you plug in a flash drive if you want to scan it before use. It does not have a password prompt however, and I am not aware of any software that does that (but there is most likely SOMETHING out there).EDIT: I am not 100% sure what you are asking for...If you are after something to prevent others from accessing data on your flash drives then something like truecrypt may be of more use.The only disadvantage is that you will need the software on all computers that you plan to connect the flash drive to.message edited by thomasad

Windows will not start for me in any mode. I have a a Dell Dimension E510 and Windows XP Media Center and this is the message I get when I try to boot from my Windows install disc. I have a floppy disk drive and have downloaded several different SATA and SCSI drivers? And none of them worked. When I hit F6 and put in the floppy disk with these drivers I would either get "cannot find txtsetup.oem" or it would try to run the driver and then it would start right back over trying to load Windows and I would end up back at the same "cannot find any hard disk drives" screen. I ran a hard drive diagnostic test and I passed everything. If this is just as simple as downloading the correct drivers onto my floppy disk, I would be GREATLY appreciative if someone could direct me to the correct download link.

Also approximately , would it be cheaper to repair hard disk or maybe buy a new HDD like 500GB i am getting for around 50% here in china .

A:Repair old Hard Disk of Desktop Computer

If it is a hardware problem, that could get expensive.
If it wouldn't work because the data is corrupted,it
could be possibly formatted and reused.
If you can buy a drive for comparatively half price, that
would be the way to go.
Buying a drive with a lot more storage and avoid
the hassle with the old drive.
If you are worried about private data on the old drive,
just break it up with a hammer.

Running Windows XP service pack 3 on AMD Sempron 3000+ Biostar board.

Formerly, we were running a 500-Gig external USB drive on this system for years without a problem. I don't remember its drive letter ever just disappearing. It may have happened; but, it was so rare I don't remember when it might have. That drive died so we replaced it.

New drive is a Western Digital 1.5-Terabyte in an Eagle brand enclosure. Problem is it keeps disappearing for no obvious reason. Restarting the computer does no good; but, power cycling the enclosure makes it work again 100% of the time on the first power-cycle try. We have tried the drive on both the USB add-in card with it being the only device on that two-port card and on the native main board USB ports and the result is the same.

We need for this thing to stay on-line as there is an automated scheduled backup that needs to run every day and sometimes twice a day.

Suggestions please.

I removed it, then rebooted the machine and it still could not be seen in My Computer".

In Device Manager and "Safely Remove Hardware", I have noticed that my other drives are labelled in the following format;

The one that doesnt work is labelled;

WDC WD2500

It has the 2nd part of the identifier missing, they are all Western Digital drives.

Does anyone know what has happened to this drive and if there is any way to recover it without loosing the data?

My cousin sent me his Toshiba Satellite A205-S6808 and asked if I would downgrade his Vista to XP. I didn't think this would be a problem at the time because I've done this routine plenty of times.

I've tried 3 different drivers now by loading them when pressing F6 during the installation but none of them seem to get the installation to recognize the hard drive. I've also tried to slip-stream the drivers onto an installation CD but that was pretty much a waste of time. I know the hard drive is in correctly because it appears in the BIOS. I have scoured intel and toshiba's websites looking for this driver to no avail.

I've submitted a ticket to toshiba explaining my issue but still have yet to hear anything.

I just looked on Hitachi's website, they also do not have the driver that I am looking for.

If Toshiba is not able to supply me with the correct driver, is there anything else I can try to install XP on this machine? Maybe i'm not using the correct driver and someone here can point me in the right direction? I'm pulling my hair out with this so ANY help is VERY much appreciated!

A:Computer failure...hard disk problem???

@Alemrow? That error indicates that the hard drive has failed. Time to replace the HDD. If you do not have recovery media then you can still order it here. REO

I have an 8GB sd card i used while traveling and upon trying to get the pictures from it the computer does not recognize the card at all, no prompts, nothing. I have tried it in multiple pcs and macs and no response. My Cannon Rebel XS camera says no images found. However, when I plug it into my brother's Cannon PowerShot it actually recognizes and shows all pictures on the card. Does anyone have any reason why this is happening and how I can recover the pictures? I am not willing to just format to make the card work again, I must have these pictures.

A:SD Card not recognized in computer but recognized on camera

Have you tried leaving the card in the camera and attaching to the computer to d/l the pictures that way. I have an Olympus camera and the pictures will d/l fine with the card left in the camera.

A:External hard drive not seen in disk management and computer

USB drives dont show in BIOS.

The USB adaptor may be USB 2 and your USB may be usb1 and as such is having trouble seeing the drive.

Or your USB sockets or drivers are faulty, try another USB device in them

OS: Windows XP SP2

well... my computer is on for many hours... non-stop
the HDD i am having problems with is an 80gb BARACUDA SATA HD
It's full of TV shows/cartoons and useless stuff... so thats the reason why i labelled it "TV Shows".

the issue i am facing is:
I start my computer, & whether or not i access the TV Shows HDD, it just disappears from the explorer / my computer drive list after any arbitrary time period.
I then restart my PC and there it is again. But then again disappears after a long time.
When i go to device manager, the hard disk is not to be found even after scanning for "new hardware". It's like the HDD switches off.

My computer is permanently on and the "TV Shows" HDD is seldom used.
No background disk usage occurs on it either.
I have other SATA HDD's too but none behave in the similar manner.
The computer heats up so i have kept the side case open too.

After using "Disk Investigator", it reports no problems with any of the HDD's.
Although the temperature readings of the HDD are:
HDD 1: 35C
HDD 2: 43C
HDD 3: 42C - - "TV Shows"... the one giving problems
which is fine, although they are too hot but it's because the room temperature here is between 20C - 30C.

What could be wrong?
I made sure the cables are fixed properly, changed the SATA data cable, also switched it from SATA port 2 on motherboard to SATA port 3, but only this HDD plays hide n' seek.

So I have a Dell latitude d830 computer with a standard 55.8 gig hard drive C. I have filled that space, but when I bought the computer i upgraded the amount of disk space, to basically double. I have data drive D that is completely empty, mostly because I do not know how to use it. Basically Im wondering how do I free up space on the regular drive so I have more disk space or what exactly do I do to use this D drive.

Anything anyone can help with is appreciated. Thanks for reading!

To start with I have a KT3 Ultra2 series with an AMD Athlon 2100+ processor. Yesterday I had to clear the CMOS and after I did that the computer didn't recognize the HDDs. I check and double checked the wires and jumpers, but nothing works so I switched one of the HDD to a different IDE slot, and it worked. But when I went to set up the ATA-Raid133 and reboot it didn't show the HDD again. The only other thing I tried was to disconnect some of my CD/dvd(I have a cd and dvdburner along with a dvd reader) and dvd drives because some of them were on the same power source as the HDD. But it didn't work. Please help me!!
