I have successfully run DEFOGGER.I have successfully run DDS, and have both the text files DDS.txt and Attach.txt saved.I am running Windows firewall (XP SP2) with regular Firewall settings ON.Downloaded and ran GMER (deselecting according to the very concise instructions in the Preparation Guide -- many thanks for being so thorough and calm ). About half-way through the GMER scan, my laptop, along with all programs running at the time, freezes up, and I have to power off/hard shutdown the computer.Reboots as normal into Windows XP SP2 - I am online at the BC site now using the same infected laptop - a Dell Latitude D630.I will copy and paste here the DDS files without the GMER. I have a new (to me) computer and had to install windows xp pro sp2 from a 2 yr+ old disc, and set automatic updates to download but not install. I went about installing and tweaking programs, getting updates and dl's etc. I did so much that I'd hate to use a restore point, 'cuz in a previous infestation it did not work. When I try to shutdown it says installing 1 of 87 updates, says it is shutting down windows and freezes, on the 2 or 3 times it did not freeze, it says it has 85 updates to install. went to windows update site and I think I installed 34 updates, but not sure as I've never done it that way and no restart was necessary. not sure it is relevant but my usb mouse keeps freezing up between1-90 min into session, tried reinstalling drivers but it keeps hanging when it comes to updating registry. I have a backup PS/2 mouse. I also use soulseek 156c client that, altjough I haven't used it in a week or so kept requiring me to reset modem every 1-6 hrs, but since not using it this problem has gone away. I've used WinASO Reg. Optimizer, but went and restored all the way back to its setup, then used Mcafee to clean registry. I use the entire mcafee suite and also use spybot s&d. I hope this is enough information (and not too much) and would like to send TIA to whoever will take my case.

Hello Johny, for a Stop 0xD1, we need to see the crash dumps to have the closest look. The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. If anything is there, upload it. If not, wait for the next system crash. Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

On my HP laptop, the "Complete" sound plays after a CD burn, import or app update is complete. The "Page Load Complete" sound plays after download of an app and at various other time I can't recall off the top of my head. Some people find these sounds annoying and disable them. I, however, like them as they let me know what's going on when I'm away from the computer.

On iTunes on my Maingear desktop, these sounds do not play at the prescribed times. In fact, the only time they play at all is if I go to System Sounds, select them and press the "Test" button. They are selected and are pointed to the correct file location but, they do not play in iTunes when they are supposed to.

Any ideas?

I have Windows XP os. I started have problems with my computer shutting down with no warning. I downloaded Spybot, to try to cleanse my system and the computer would not complete the scan, it would shut down. When I run my AVAST virus software, it tells me that I have corrupt drives and drive errors. I downloaded a registry cleaner and tried just about everything. I don't know what to do. I cannot locate my os back up cd either. When I bought my computer it came with just a back up cd. My key is on a sticker on the side of my computer. What do I do. How do I fix this? Before I explain my issue let me post my specs:
CPU: i7-2630QM
RAM: 16GB DDR3 (Don't know clock speed)
HDD: 1TB (2xRaid0 7200RPM)
GPU: Nvidia GTX560M (Native overclock, unknown)

The problem,
This only occurs or has occurred so far during intense graphics use (Heavy Gaming). After no regular set period of time during intense use the computer will completely shut off instantly with no warning, going into some sort of safe boot instantly. I call this a "safe boot" because I don't know what else to call it. No POST screen shows, and the LED doesn't even light up. Now my initial thought was that this was heat related, however I just had the keyboard replaced on my computer because of a faulty issue and when I received it back this is when I have been having the issue, and since I never had this issue before that I am thinking something happened during the repair process. I have sent the computer in twice now and am getting very frustrated. The first time they sent it back the RAID controller failed on me for no known reason so they replaced it and the hard drives. I do not know how this could have been related but this did not solve my problem. From my experience and knowledge this could be a number of things, including heat, GPU failure, Driver failure, Memory leak, Motherboard failure, AC or other Power related failure, etc etc. So what does everyone think? Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am sending it in tomorrow back for yet another repair with ho... Read more

Every time I try to restart my computer or shut it down, it follows all the steps until the "Windows is shutting down.." page comes on and it stays that way, days if I'd let it. I am running XP Professional and don't have any trouble except I'd like to do a complete shutdown to get rid of spyware, etc. Any suggestions? I'm a little wary of getting any more fixes from MS because my computer runs like a hippo after I download them...and they all say I need to restart before the changes take effect, alas another shutdown.

A:windows will not complete shutdown

Have a trawl through Task Manager before you shut down to make sure there are no Applications still running which might prevent shutdown. Did this behaviour start around the time of a particular programme installation? While in Task Manager look through the Processes - is there anything in there you don't recognise?

In advance, thank you for your time and effort to provide resource for this forum.

The computer doesn't complete the update when I try to shut down. It creates folders named with seemingly random series of digits and letters. It can't be deleted and a new folder is created whenever I try to shut down (w/updates). I can delete a lot of the files in that folder but there are 4 dotnetfx folders that can't be deleted. I've let it try to update overnight but it never completes.

I've run Malwarebytes and found no problems.

There are other symptoms but from other posts I've been reading, my description above is not unusual.

Your help would be appreciated.

I don't know where to start. Basically, I tried to uninstall unknown software using install/uninstall in win98 and one unknown asked me if I was sure I wanted to proceed. I clicked yes, heard my hard drive kick in, and that's when the destruction began. As I exited a window I was deied access back into that window. I closed control panel and was denied access back into it as well. None of my desktop icons would work and the icons under the START menu had changed. I shut down my computer. When I restarted a miniature version of my desktop wallpaper came up, and the Windows 98 registration wizard and EULA came up(but the text"Windows Regis Wizard" was real blurry looking). I did not proceed. I restarted in safe mode but each time a fatal exception occured and it would not proceed to boot any further.

What should I do?

Hello, Iv'e been working on this for a few days now and cant seem to come to any definite diagnosis so I really hope someone here can help!

For the last 2/3 months I have sometimes noticed (but never seen first hand) that if I left my computer on for a few hours that sometimes Id come back and it had turned itself off, and then of course when I went to turn it back on the "Windows has been shut down illegally start in safe mode etc" message came up.

However I ignored it as it wasnt as yet directly effecting me using my PC. Unfortunately 3/4 days ago it shut down whilst I was using it and it has since been a pretty regular occurrence.

There doesn't seem to be a definite pattern to the shut down,

it happens after a while if I play a game, in this case Civ 4.
I has shut down during watching a video, as well as on the internet with many tabs on and music playing. Also it does it if I initiate a virus scan and most interestingly if I run a memory diagnostic it shuts down.

This led me to think it might be a hardware issue, the problem being that

it has never shut down during safe mode and I left it on the BIOS screen for several hours with no shut down. Also I can initiate a virus scan in safe mode and it wont crash.

Ive already performed a system restore

I hope I didnt write too much here, Ive tried to be as specific as possible but Im sure there is stuff Ive missed.

Any ideas?

thanks a lot in advance guys

HP Pavillion will not turn on immediately after complete shutdown...

If you choose start/shutdown and power the pc all the way down, then press the power button to turn it back on it will not boot. It will power on, cd light comes on, can hear the pc fans and hears the kicker...the power light doesn't light, the suspend light does. wait about 15-20 minutes, you can turn it back on. Acts as though it has to cool down. All fans are working.

Any clue?

Hi all,

This is my first post and whilst I understand there has been similar posts on this subject, to be honest, I have not understood them and I am going through a massive PC learning curve it seems.

Ok, to the problem! I have been given a PC by my girlfriends parents. I can surf for hours without any problems but then as soon as I touch a game such as WoW or basic Mahjong on the internet, after 10mins or less the PC completely shuts its self down. No error messages, just a complete switch off.

I can restart after a min and its fine until I touch a game.

My spec is (from my computer properties)

Pentium 4 CPU , 3.4GHz, 512mb of Ram.
I have a sticker that says Nvidea gforce fx but on the device manager it says CONNECT 3D RADEON 9550
CONNECT 3D RADEON 9550 Secondary
Windows XP Home

I have read much about overheating so I downloaded Speedfan but to be honest I have no idea what it is telling me.

Please help and let me know what other details you need and where I can get them from!

A:Complete PC Shutdown when playing the most simple of games

Sounds like an overheating issue with the graphics card to be honest.
When you're surfing the net and such, you're only using 2D acceleration, which takes very little power and produces very little heat. 3D acceleration produces tons of heat and uses a lot more power.

What I would do is open up the side of the case, and take a vacuum or can of compressed air (About $5-$10 at any computer store) and blow the processor fan/heat sink and the video card fan/heat sink (The video card is the one the monitor plugs into) out with it, or vacuum as much dust out as you can.

This, of course must be done while the computer is off.

Then try again.

Okay guys, the title of this website really is describing my emotions well at the moment. I went through every possible idea I could think of prior to coming here....and perhaps I should have done that all along. This is my problem.
It all started about 1.5 years ago shortly after building my computer, I noticed that the computer will actually RANDOMLY completely shutdown. No beeps, no blue screen. nothing. Just a complete and utter immediate powerdown as if you unplugged the power in the room. It could be when on the desktop (notably less often), or when I'm browsin the internet, or mostly when I play computer games (usually what I am on my desktop for). I want to stress though that I have had it happen in all environments and at completely random intervals. The only thing that is nonconsistent is after a certain amount of time (couple days) the problem will stop happening altogether until the next time I reboot/shut off my computer. Then it randomly occurs often again basically until I survive long enough. Time for the details.
The first thing I thought of, was powersupply. I replaced the powersupply and my problem still persisted. To make a long story short, this is what else I did over the last year.
-First thing I did was check driver/BIOS updates etc. Issue persisted.
-Oddly enough the few times I have ran furtest (whatever the program is called with the donut that blows up your computer internally) my gpu/cpu maintained well and I couldn't get the problem to happen.

Hi, win8 forum.

i had windows 8 enterprise 64 bit OS running fine with my HP Pavilion 15-e033tx Notebook.

I was having issues so i decided to update my drivers. I had previously bios VersionF.08 and the hp support page showed that there was an update to the bios namely VersionF.21.

After updating the bios the problem started, when i shutdown the lights stay on and the notebook goes blank after the 'your system is shutting down screen' but the power, and all led lights are still on and dont turn off. i have to hold the power key to force shut it down.
If i restart it , it says 'pc restarting' , goes blank and then all power goes off. System does not restart.
(this is how i have been shutting down my system now)

i rolled back the bios and it fixed the issue.

Then i fresh installed win 8.1 pro (2 days ago) , and it has only VersionF.21 bios available. Same problem again.
Hp Support assistant showed a new bios update Insyde F.22 .updated to it, But the problem is still there.

I've searched the other posts with similar problem and i cant seem to fix this. Please help
needless to say Hp driver support is horrible and i'm not getting any solutions from them.

I've had my computer for years and years. It will randomly crash in an instant at any given time - be it while playing a game or just surfing the web. I can find no rhyme or reason why it crashes or how to cause it to crash.

Sometimes it will run fine without crashing for months at a time. Then it slowly starts crashing more and more. First once every few days, then work its way up to crashing numerous times in a day.

The only thing I've found, through experimentation, to sort of remedy the problem is to turn off the PC, physically remove the graphics card, boot on the pc, wait ~2 mins, turn off PC, re-install GPU, turn on PC.

This usually will stave off the crashing, putting me at least back to the one or less crashes a day phase.

The issue seems to be OS independent, as I get the same behavior when running Ubuntu.

This whole mess started earlier this week. My wife received a virus infested email from a friend. Shortly after, the internet sites started running slower. She then received the "Security Protection" pop-ups. I already had Malwarebytes installed and ran a quick scan which only showed & fixed the Security Protection virus (2 infected files). The computer stayed on the remainder of the night and when she woke up the next morning, it was worse than before. I ran a full system scan which revealed over 40+ infected files. I thought Malwarebytes successfully found all the viruses and the computer ran good for a few hours and then antivirus program "Microsoft Essentials" shut down and the computer began locking up. I tried several times thru a hard-boot to run Malwarebytes again but it would run for a few seconds and then shut off. I was simply moving files in Explorer when the system suddenly froze. The only thing I could do was to literally pull the plug. On re-plugging, Windows immediately started to reboot. However, it didn't complete. I rebooted by unplugging again and restarted in Safe Mode. I ran HJT and scanned with Malwarebyte's AntiMalware. It found two entries in Start which I asked it to remove. Again, it wouldn't shut down properly and I had to unplug/replug. Windows rebooted but nothing was accessible. I rebooted into Safe Mode but found that it too froze after a while. I noted that it froze when I tried to close a window, though I'm not sure if that wasn't coincidental. I'm loath to keep rebooting because I'm worried I may be spreading a boot virus, or something. I'm not even sure if it's a virus. Any urgent help would be much appreciated.

I thought the original problem was related to uTorrent, however it just happened again without uTorrent running.

There is no traditional BSOD, just black screen as the PC reboots. I get the "Start in safe mode option"

I had my RAM set to XMP but disabled that and set it back to Manual before this last crash.

I believe some constants are internet usage - all 4 crashes tonight the 360 has been playing a video from the PC HDD (my OS is on a 4x SSD array), and I've had a stream open too.

Thanks for your help in advance!

4th reboot tonight

this time Chrome was running with about 15 tabs, one pop-out screen.

Steam, and the usual background stuff.

I had logged into (starcraft 2) looked around, and started a match. The second the 3, 2, 1 countdown finished and the loading screen popped up - crash.

I've got my temps up here now and that all seems good.

I have an Asus k55A laptop which originally came with Windows 8. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in a separate partition as well as upgraded the original OS to 8.1 (like anything they do is going to make Windows 8 better). I mainly run Windows 7.

Recently, I obtained a Mac iBook G4. This computer has no operating system on it, and all attempts to use a disc to install one have failed. I even tried installing via USB. After searching on the internet, I learned that a Mac can be made functional using a function called Target Disk Mode, which in essence turns the laptop into a giant external hard drive. These pages even said this would work using a Windows PC, so long as the PC had a program that could read Mac formatted drives, such as MacDrive. I have that and TransMac on my PC, but not a Firewire port. I bought a USB wire off ebay that has adapters to connect just about any kind of port, including old Firewire 400 and USB 2.0.

So I booted the Mac into Target Disk mode, started up my laptop, plugged one end of the wire into the Firewire port on the Mac, plugged the USB end into the Asus and... poof. The laptop went dead. I have removed the battery, held the power button for 45 seconds, looked for a reset button of some kind (there doesn't appear to be one). I'm not sure what's going on.

Hi, so I've been having this problem for a bit of time now but it hasn't been all that frequent but nonetheless it is really annoying. So most of the time if not all of the time it happens in video games e.g Just Cause 2, Amnesia, Mass Effect 2, and pretty much all the games on my Steam library so like 35-40 games.

What happens is the screen freezes and the mouse doesn't move ctrl alt del doesn't work and it is just frozen on where I was in the game when it happened. Sometimes it can have a little freeze where it comes back shortly after but that is very rare over the other freezes. Whenever it freezes I press the backlight button on my Logitech G19 and if the lights go off on it then it's either the game had an error or it is just a 5 second freeze, but if when I press it the lights stay on but the LCD screen on the keyboard goes black then I know that I have to press the restart button on my tower.

I have waited plenty of time and tried ctrl alt del to see if that works but to no avail only restarting the computer works. I keep my computer fairly clean and it doesn't get hot and I only did a clean install a couple weeks ago.

Any help and ideas to see if I can fix this problem would be appreciated.

Hello Radster, sorry we took a long time and of course, welcome to SF!

Both these dumps have a bugcheck 24 code. Usually connected to the harddisk (HW and/or Drivers / BIOS).

However, your drivers and logs show some extra info:
I would (as a test) deinstall your AVG stuff. We encounter lots of problems with W7.

Please see these links for uninstalling your AV:
Uninstallers (removal tools) for common antivirus software - ESET Knowledgebase
or here

Ultimate Collection of Uninstallers / Removal Tools for All Popular Anti-Virus Software - Tweaking with Vishal

Then reboot.
Sometimes these uninstallers do not remove all they should out of Registry:
Run CCleaner, both regular and registry.

You have multiple errors and unclear driver issues that could be due to an interrupted Windows Update process:

Please go to your Maintenance Center and check the Windows Update status. Make sure you are up to date, do them one by one manually if needed.
For help or reset see: Windows Update - Reset

Finally, when all that is ok and you still have problems: start with a test of your harddisk:
For a full diagnostic of your HD that goes beyond Chkdsk, see:
HD Diagnostic
Next install your preferred AV immediately. In this case try Avast! or MSE temporarily till you are sure you are stable

About 3 weeks ago I purchased an SSD and installed it. I started getting random crashes were my entire computer freezes up. The crashes usually happen 6-8 hours after the initial boot up, however it seems to occur more frequently when gaming. No mouse movement and I can't ctrl+alt+del. My fans and led's on my peripherals stay on, my screen stays frozen and does not power off. It requires me to hard reset, but things usually go back to normal after rebooting. Assuming the SSD was at fault I returned it and went back to using my HDD. Unfortunately the freezes have continued. No matter how much time I wait, I never get a BSOD and no blue screen error reports are created. Formatting and re-installing windows has not fixed the problem.

I looked through my administrative logs under event viewer and found a ton of errors. I was able to take care of some, for example there were a significant amount related to a razer program that I have now uninstalled. I also noticed "Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0" was occurring around the time of the crashes. After looking through my security logs under event viewer I realized that there was a constant spam of audits relating to a number of different things. I decided to temporarily disable audits to see if that solves my freezing problem, but because I don't know how to recreate the freeze, I can't confirm if this was the solution.

I can confirm that it is not a problem with my hard drive, as it was also happening... Read more

I recently wiped my old Xp Computer down to nothingness. I Put in a new Radeon HD 3650 Graphics card before installing vista.

Everything installed correctly and the Radeon updated and installed itself from the CD.

I tried out the vista games, solitaire etc. Once i went onto the new game i had noticed it froze the computer within 30 seconds. The sound loops at the point and no keys work including mouse and Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

This always happens on that particular game but it also does it randomly ie, startup, browsing internet, on other games eg Guild Wars.

About a month ago I made a post on here because I knew my PC had encountered a virus, but I didn't know how. It was freezing and scans wouldn't complete. I followed the instructions to remove the problem (which included running adw cleaner, combofix, and some scans), but was late responding to a senior member's reply and stopped receiving further instructions. At this time my computer was running much better and showed no more signs of infection. I now encountered the same problem and tried the previous instructions, but they don't work anymore. I ran an eset online scan, which was the last instruction. It found 9 threats but just shut down at 99%. I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

Hi all,
I recently bought a Medion notebook/laptop, specifically the Akoya P6512. It worked really well for around 3 months, and then began to randomly freeze, and take a good minute to unfreeze, at which point it would work for 10 seconds, then freeze again. The only way to stop it was to restart the laptop. It was completely random when it would freeze, it could be okay for an hour after starting, or begin freezing right from boot.
So, I decided that the best course of action would be to wipe the hard-drive and completely reinstall Windows 7. I did so, and the freezes continued to happen. Thinking there were possibly still some corrupt sectors (and the quick format done during install didn't catch them) I opened a command prompt using the install disc and did a CLEAN ALL, followed by creating a new partition and installing on that partition. And it STILL has the problem. Do you guys have any ideas? Any recommendations on what I can do to find out what's causing it? The laptop is still under warranty, but I'd rather fix it myself than send it off.
Thanks in advance!

A:Random freezes, even after complete reinstall

Here are my solutions to freezing, and an excellent article, which I hope is of some help
Go to search type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers
Download and run malwarebytes, a full scan after you update
Run antivirus scan
Check memory with memtest86
Make sure that you are not over heating.
Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.
Try a clean boot
Make sure PSU is working properly
If overclocking, restore to original
Test hard drive at company website.
Test in safe mode, does it still happen?
Try with clean boot..

Hi - I'm attempting to run DDS in order to supply you with system logs of a computer I suspect is infected. However when I run the program, nothing happens, it just sits there with the DOS window open. I have waited 10 minutes with no result. No logs, nothing.

In your instructions you mention closing any script-blockers. I use Ad-Aware Pro which has a module called Ad-Watch which alerts me to any unauthorized attempt to make registry changes. This is the program which alerted me to the problem in the first place, since something attempts to make a registry change every few seconds. I understand that Ad-Watch may be interfering with the DDS scan, but right now it is also blocking all these unauthorized registry accesses. If I shut down Ad Watch to get a scan, won't I be exposing my system to more damage since all those registry changes that have been blocked up till now will then be allowed to go through?

Please explain my best course of action, and excuse me if I don't know what I'm talking about.

As the title states, my PC is randomly either getting a BSOD (System service exception 0x03B, and more rarely 0x01E) or totally freezing (M+K become unresponsive, cannot ctrl-alt-delete, display and sound are hung). I cannot figure out what is causing it. Because it seemingly happens at random, it is difficult to debug. I am at my wit's end.

I recently upgraded my GPU and RAM in preperation for Fallout4.

My specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor 3.2 ghz
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H
GPU: Zotac Nvidia gtx 970 (formerly radeon hd 6800 series)
PSU: Corsair CX500
RAM: 2x4gb crucial ballistix sport ddr3 240 pin SDRAM PC12800 (formerly 2x2 gb)
500gb HDD (music, videos) and 120gb SSD (Windows, games)

After googling these problems, I have tried many things.
I have done:
reseating RAM/GPU

display driver uninstaller (both GPU manufacturers, in safe mode)

ensuring system temps are acceptable with speedfan
Downloading Tweakbit Driver updater- It says I have a few out of date drivers, but windows device manager doesn't seem to think so.

I tried downloading "who crashed", but I do not seem to be getting dump files, even though I followed instructions about setting the dump files and page files up. So that program hasn't really helped.

Hello, this is my first post here. I've found the site to be very useful, having used Rkill to end a pretend windows security malware program that popped up on my mom's laptop and on one of my friends' as well.
This concerns my rig, which I built June 2011. In January I reinstalled windows on a new motherboard and a new cpu. The old cpu had died - amd replaced it. I put antispyware on but neglected to reinstall microsoft security essentials.

My problem today began after playing an avi movie when the windows media player crashed yesterday. I don't know if there was something bad in the torrent file folder or not. (The movie was just released on dvd and this was more convenient than going to the library to borrow a copy.) Following this, the computer began freezing and a bsod appeared for a split second.
The rig kept the power on since the fans and fan led lights stayed on. However the monitor lost the signal and the mouse and keyboard were off as well.
I shut down the rig via the power-on button.

If I enter gibberish, I can enter anything I want such as lasdj goseu4 ot;iba.... but if I enter my real password, it stops after the first five correct characters and will not allow me to continue unless I enter it again and again. I suspect that there is some tracking going on and when it figures out the remaining characters, it will have all the login info it needs to log on to my computer. I got frustrated with it and was going to change my password, but the "wizard" said I needed to save my password and offered the removable F Drive. However I do NOT have a removable device plugged into my computer and the wizard would NOT allow me to change the place to save it to another location. I am thinking something has installed itself and disguised itself as a a removable device. I just changed its name to "SUSPECT" on My computer. Another thing that is worrying me is I am unable to access certain websites that I used to be able to browse before. I cannot open or open which makes me wonder if this thing is disabling my browsing ability ALPHABETICALLY? HELP!

My computer is a Dell C521 with Windows XP Media Edition. I ran Disk Doctor from Tune-Up Utilities 2010. It completed all 5 tests, said the volume was clean, and the test was finished. Then it just stays there on that screen. Every time I try to reboot, it goes through the test again. I can cancel the test by hitting any key, but then it just freezes right after that. I have tried several things like booting in safe mode, etc., but the problem is still there. Any suggestions to correct this issue will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A:Computer freezes after disk check is complete.

I suggest that you remove "utilities" such as the one you named...completely and forever from your system. After doing that, I suggest that you run the chkdsk /r command after removing this program...and possibly follow up with running the sfc /scannow command.Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons: Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses ... Read more

My system will randomly freeze and is completely unresponsive to any keyboard/mouse input. I have to either shut down the machine or hit the reset button.

Strangely, this never happens while gaming. I can game for hours and hours and have zero problems. The only time I get freezes are when my system is using low resources. Just browsing the web and such. Also strange is that it is very random. Sometimes I can have it happen many times one day, and other days it never happens once with significant web browsing and stuff.

It also only happens when I'm doing some sort of action.. For example clicking a button on a website, loading a youtube video, etc. It will never happen while completely IDLE.

I have formatted my system completely several times, all drivers up to date, BIOS flashed to latest, etc. I have been dealing with this problem for months and am coming here for help! At first I was thinking either memory or video card problem, but considering they do not fail stress tests and gaming is flawless, I can't understand how they would be the issue?

My CPU is overclocked, video cards are stock. I have run memtest, prime95, furmark and all have run without any system freezing, blue screens, etc.

I have attached my minidumps/perfmon/xml file in a .zip to this post.

Up until yesterday my computer was working fine. I've dealt with viruses before so once my computer started freezing, lagging, and acting up I closed all programs and ran a Malwarebytes scan, but it did not complete. The computer was freezing and responding slowly, so I shut it down. It wouldn't even complete shutting down so I was forced to remove the battery. I ran another scan in safe mode and it still wouldn't complete. Please help, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there

I will use instructions that do not involve typing (print these since I ask you to reboot):

Right click on Computer in your start menu, and select Properties.

Click on Advanced System Settings on the left.

Click on the Hardware tab and then click on Device Manager

Click on the + sign by Keyboards then right click and Uninstall the keyboard(s) you see listed there.

Then Reboot your computer.
Windows will install the keyboard once again when you go into Windows. If you need to enter a password when you login, on the Bottom left of the login screen you will see a Ease of Access icon, where you can turn on the on screen keyboard and type in the password by clicking on the letters.

Also, in Windows, you can go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Ease of Access> and On-Screen Keyboard to use that to talk to me here.

If that doesn't work:
Download and install Intellitype by Microsoft
Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type mskey, and then click OK. (use the On-Screen Keyboard if you have to)
This will open the keyboard diagnostics tool

If you cannot fix it using these two options, check toshiba's website for keyboard drivers and if you cannot find any, make use of that warranty if it is still valid because your keyboard is defective

We have a network running Windows NT 4.0 (service pack 6). We also have a mirror set of two 20Mb disk. Recently we installed a 32 Mb disk as a secondary disk. When we try to format it thru Disk Manager we receive "Unable to complete format" at the end of format process.

In Microsoft Knowledge Base we found out that there is a bug that should be fix by the SP 4, but isn't this fix suppose to be included in SP 6.

Would be OKAY to install SP 4 if we already have SP 6?

(Hope I'm posting in the right place...)

Just recently, I've found that whenever I try to download any file to my computer or if I try to install a program, the message always comes up as "Internet Explorer cannot download (insert file name here) from (insert website here). Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." I've waited hours and tried again, but this message keeps showing up. Now, I find it hard to believe that all of the sites I've gone to have been "unavailble" or "cannot be found". My internet is working fine. All sites come up perfectly. But when download, my computer just doens't seem to want to give in.

Because of this problem, I cannot download things like Adobe Flash Player, or simplilar things like an mp3 file of my children singing. Also, on sites like and MySpace, my kids have found they are unable to listen to music. Is there something I need to take off my computer or something I need to install to fix this problem?

Please help! Thanks!

Hi all. Apologies if this is a repeat topic, I had a look and couldn't see anything here that answered my question.

I'm trying to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on a laptop. The laptop was previously on 7. I am also replacing the HDD with an SSD, and adding new RAM.

Here's what I've done so far. I used the laptop to download the Windows media creation tool and create a USB stick to boot from. I then took the laptop apart to replace the ram and hard drive. I put it back together, put the USB in and started Windows 10 installation. I put the Windows 7 key in when prompted for a product key, it seemed happy enough with this. Went through steps regarding which setting to turn on/off, log in with Windows ID, turn Cortana on, etc. As far as I can tell the whole process went ahead fine, and I ended up at a blue screen saying something about "we're setting things up for you" or similar. As far as I can tell, I'm at step 25 on this tutorial thread: Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

The screen stays around for a while, the blue background kind of pulses darker and brighter. Then after a couple of minutes the screen just goes black with nothing on it. The actual screen is still on (I can see the backlight) but nothing happens.

I've been through these steps a few times now. Same thing every time. I left it for about an hour one time. I've forced a restart and it won't boot into Windows - sometimes it tells me that Windows hasn't been installed proper... Read more

It might help if you give full specs in the User CP as it is difficult to offer advice without some basis to support it on. "A laptop" doesn't help much.

I would advise running the windows 8.1 upgrade assistant

Upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 - Windows Help

to check general compatibility first, and (against all advice generally given), upgrades, in the first instance, may be better than attempting clean installations on older hardware, such as that used to run Windows 7. In all cases, if the upgadeable OS is fully up-to-date, it is preferable, as the presence of old failed updates may cause the 10 setup upgrade to fail.

In all upgrades of this type, I now recommend that internet is disconnected, non essential hardware is disabled, and no peripherals or USB attachments present, even to the extent of running setup from the /sources folder copied onto the hard drive from the USB, DVD or iso, with the USB or DVD removed, and the tray left open to disable the optical device temporarily. This expedient removes the likelihood of incompatible Windows 10 device drivers being used during setup by WinPE, and getting installed into the new installation.

It may be wise to perform an image backup of the Windows 7 installation and keep on external storage in case you need to repeat the exercise, or give up in disgust!

Hello everyone, this is my first time to the forums here and I have to say, I am very impressed with what you guys have going on here. I'm hoping I can get my problem solved!

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate

Story: I connected a 160GB External Hard drive to my Vista Laptop and went into the Backup and Restore Center to back my files up. I received an error message however that I can not back my computer up because my hard drive files are corrupt. Here is the error message:

"The disk C: has errors.
Windows has detected file system corruption on C:. You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored."

I try to check the disk for errors while it's in a full boot, and I get the 'you must be in safe mode' message and it asks me if I want to schedule a safe boot the next time my computer starts. Yes! So I restart and it doesn't work... I do a little research as to why I cannot boot into safe mode and I find a tutorial on this site telling me I need to do some SFC work in order to fix the problem. The tutorial I was following is this one: Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista

I start following the instruction for the SFC part, and SFC craps out at 17% saying "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." Great... So I go back to the tutorial and click the "How to Repair and Verify the Integrity of Vista System Files with System File Checker" link which takes me to this tutorial: System Files - SFC Comman... I was browsing the internet when my system completely froze. No strange noises, blue screens of death or restarts to the bootup screens. It just froze. Was unresponsive to ctrl+alt+delete, couldn't alt+tab to anything. There was no way to do anything but power off. Usually when something like this occurs, I get some kind of error message upon logging back in, but I received nothing of the sort. So I thought it was a random one time error so I continued about my business.

About 10 minutes later, my PC froze again. So this time I log back in and do a quick spyware scan, a few low risk pieces of spyware, nothing big. Get rid of it and go on about my way. Shortly afterwards, I get my third freeze. Nothing responds at all. I restart and get into Safe Mode and scan my computer for viruses. There were no viruses found. So my system is spyware and virus free, to the best of my knowledge. I also updated Windows. I'm back on now, and thankfully I have not had another freeze (yet).

The only other thing I can think of is that starting a couple of days ago, my video card's fan is a bit louder than usual. I took it out and dusted it off with compressed air and inspected it, and it looked to be in fine shape. The noises that it is making, while louder than usual does not sound like it is dying (I've heard fans in their death throes before).

So I'm trying to figure out why it was freezing randomly like that.

This week i was performing a routine scan with AVG free edition and an infection was detected; JS\Downloader.Agent. The scan then "got stuck" on a file and just kept going for 11 hours! When i tried to stop the scan, it didn't respond. When i tried to quit the application, it told me that it couldn't quit because a scan was in progress. So i forced the application to quit through Task manager. I tried scanning again a few times and got the same result.

I then tried to remove AVG to reinstall it and the uninstallation process froze in the middle. So i went and manually deleted the Grisoft folder in the Program files folder. I also ran a search for all files with AVG in the file name (including hidden and system files) and deleted everything. When i went back to the uninstallation page in Windows and found AVG, there was no file size indicated and clicking the remove tab gave me a message that said AVG had already been uninstalled.

So i reinstalled AVG and still no luck. I took the path name to the infected file from a "frozen scan" and found it on my computer. I opened it and AVG prompted me to take action. I moved it to the vault and then deleted the file. I then ran another scan to double check and this time it didn't detect it, but the scan froze again, and kept going for 9 hours... Hi SjBuckley,

Try executing your AV in Safe Mode rather than uninstalling, reinstalling. You probably have too many things loaded and probably executing at once (just a guess on my part - i.e. not sure).

In Safe Mode, few programs are running, and AVG can complete its work more than likely.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. (If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install.) Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failures.

If it wasn't for the beer earlier, I would have lost it completely.
Brand new machine (homebrew AMD FX6300, GA990FXA-UD3, 8gb ram, 120gb ssd, 1tb hd, ati radeon 5450) running Win7 Pro x64.  Regardless of which browser I use (Firefox, IE, Chrome), I'm having files not download completely, or at all.
Example:  As a test, I've tried to download XP SP3.  I know it's 316mb in size.  I get to MAYBE 30 mb (if I'm lucky), and the file stops download.  All three browsers think the file is done and quits transferring.  More often than not, I get MAYBE 3mb downloaded and it stops.  I've attempted to download other files of various sizes from various sources and the same thing happens.  No difference between starting the system normally or in a clean boot environment.
So far, I've tried both the on-board NIC and an external USB WiFi dongle, same results.  Win7 updates are up to date, drivers for both on-board NIC and WiFi dongle are up to date, BIOS has been updated, etc.
I've got a Vista machine here sitting next to this one and it has no issues whatsoever downloading the exact same files.
MBAM has come up clean, MSSE comes up clean, ComboFix found nothing, TDSSKiller found nothing.
Suggestions?  Thoughts?

Installation went fine as a dual boot with Win7. However I have been unable to complete the initial setup. Navigating the screens is a nightmare for selecting options like the wireless connection. Got past that to the screen after entering my email address where it asks for my email password. I can enter everything okay but cannot move out of the password box to the NEXT or Cancel buttons at the bottom of the page.

Have tried both my wireless and wired keyboards and makes no difference.

Any ideas on what I am missing or a solution before I just uninstall and wait for the release version?

Good evening, and thank you for what seems to be a great forum!

On to my problems, I will try my best to make it clear.

I know I have had several spyware. I've tried my best to remove them using multiple programs. I'm running a registered version of Trend 14, plus I've scanned and cleaned with the following programs (in no particular order)
- Ad-Aware
- Spybot search and destroy
- Spywareblaster (as recommended on this site)
- Cleanup
- Panda (according to the 5 steps)
- Vundofix

At first, I found several threats, and removed them as the different programs suggest. However after a few reboots, AVG, Spybot, Trend and Panda were unable to complete the scan. Every time I get the error message saying the program has encountered a problem and needs to close. That goes for the Panda scan as well, but then it is Iexplore which needs to close.

Also, when rebooting, I get the same error message for explorer.exe.

Other than that, things seem to be running normally.

I have tried my best to comply to the 5 step guide before posting my log.

XP Pro SP2, all updates (I hope/think)
Trend 14 up to date
Opera 9.21

Thank you in advance for your assistance, looking forward to your advice.

Best regards,

[EDIT: Rebooted, and DSS worked fine]

I've got a tricky one here for you...

Ok, One of my friends popped up on facebook chat today and said "I hear you're a computer guy can you help?", I said yes.

Now his situation is that he can't run a game downloader, which is an MSI, that uses that client to download the files from a server somewhere. The same is with the installer for Microsoft Security Essentials.

When running the game downloader, it will get to he part where it tries to contact the external server to download the files from, and it says there is no internet connection. This is exactly the same when using the MSSE downloader/installer and seems like there is something blocking access.

I got him to install Team Viewer for me so I could remote on and take a look, He had Mcafee installed with a firewall etc, I uninstalled that and put another AV on there. Made sure there were no firewalls or proxies running there weren't, and he still couldn't do what he needed to do!

So I asked him to start it in safe mode with networking, and try to use the downloader... AND [Blo and behold[/B] it worked. I asked him to try it again in normal boot, and it didn't...

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? I don't suspect that it is malware... If anyone has any ideas please advise!

Since all is well in SAFEMODE, use MSCONFIG or AutoRuns to go through start-up apps, disabling each until the culprit is found.

My son has a 3 year old Compaq computer which is running Windows XP home. He had been asking me for a while to reinstall the operating system to get his sister's stuff off of it since she now has a laptop. The computer came with its own recovery system built in -- so I did that first. The computer would run the recovery -- and then would go to the black background "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" screen with a little 'please wait' under the windows logo flag -- and when it would go to the next screen (which would presumably be the beginnings of the start-up area) it would get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left side. (You can't type anything with the cursor, however). So I got in an online chat with HP who said that it sounded like the recover partition had been corrupted and that if I had not made a set of recovery CDs then I needed to order them and run the recovery from the Cds. So I did just that yesterday. The same thing happens. I get to the first start-up screen (black background with Microsoft 'flag' and a 'please wait') and when it goes to the next screen it's a black background with a cursor in the upper left. What is wrong with this computer -- and what can I do to fix it?
Please help. Thanks!

I'm using a Toshiba PC, Win XP, and all Microsoft XP updates. When I try and burn a CD using Itunes, it burns a few songs, and then cancels. Other online forums have had this mentioned, with no solutions, so I'd thought I'd try here. It seems like an event that just affects some users, with no clear etiology. Any ideas?

I have been given a Dell 2400 desktop computer. It is running the Windows XP Home operation system. It is working well with one exception. Whenever I try to download any software from a CD disk or from the Internet, the downloads start and then freeze at 99% complete. It will not complete the download. The only exception is when I download Windows Updates - then I have no problem at all. The only way I have been able to work around this issue is to use a USB flash drive. I use another computer to download the software from the internet to the flash drive, then download the software to the Dell 2400. Once installed on the Dell 2400, it works fine. Any ideas on how to remedy this issue?
I would appreciate any ideas.

Running windows 7 - my computer has been rock solid for about a year or so. Only very recently has it had stability problems.
Latest updates and changes:
1, update with Adobe Flash. My flash videos stopped working, so I disabled and re-enabled. worked for awhile and then IE became unstable upon loading. System would hang. CTL+ALT+DEL won't get me out of the hang.
I noticed that IE 11 was running far, far more memory than it should a few days ago, and was noticing issues with load times. Had intended to run scans, but have been busy. Get back, found the system had hanged again.
Ran CCCleaner - insta-hang, won't open. Ran in safe mode, same thing. Ran Malware bytes in safe mode, but it hangs at the same place every scan (doesn't pick anything up, but 27 minutes it will hang at the files in content.IE5. Avira Antivirus stalled and hanged scanning the same files.
I attempted to delete temporary internet files manually through windows explorer, and managed to clean them, although the IE 11 tool would hang and crash.
This morning, it successfully booted up, I got another hang in IE 11. I have deleted IE 11 using the remove update and IE 10 has been stable. I think it might just be a corrupted profile, but I am uncertain, and want to check here to see if there might be malware. The hang I got today in IE 11 is when I attempted to have the browser save passwords to my profile.
Suggestions? I'm stumped here. System seems otherwise stabl... Read more

I've been trying to burn DVD-R discs, but it never finishes. It always stops at what looks like 90% or 95% done. I have 2 burners (one which was factory installed and one which is a LG). Both of them give me the same problem. I recently re-installed Windows 7. Microsoft's website has identified my LG drive as being compatible. I've tried 2 different programs (Roxio and something else). Also, if I try canceling the burn, the programs won't be able to. Roxio just says: "Project canceling" and it looks like it's working, but it never completes. How can I get these problems fixed? Thanks.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

You need CDs that are labeled DVD-RW, otherwise the disc can only be written to once.

I keep getting this error message when I am ready to shut down. My computer is a Sony Vaio with Windows 7 operating system. Anyone know what this is about and how to get rid of it?

A:the application was unable to complete an operation

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

We need a little bit more info about your problem, by answering the following questions:
1. Does this also happen when you are in safe mode? ( How to enter safe mode)
2. Have you tried starting your computer, than after complete boot, shutting down the computer? Does the same problem happen then?
Possible solutions:
1. If it doesn't happen in safe mode, I think you might be infected with a virus that refuses to close when you shutdown.
2. When booted, press start, than type "msconfig". (without the "")
Go to the "services" tab, and select the box on the bottom left corner that say's "Hide all microsoft services". After that click "disable all".
Go through the services and reselect the services that represent your anti-virus system.

After this go to the "Startup tab". Click the box "disable all" and reselect the antivirus again.

Press OK and restart the computer. You will probably get the error one last time.

Start the computer again and see if you get the error again.

When it tries to install the database I get the message:

Tachomaster support tell me that this is telling them that their software is unable to connect to its postgresql database for some reason

Has anybody any idea as to why this may be?

I have a new computer, Dell Inspiron 580 Windows 7 64-bit. I was trying the "Format" option in Windows Explorer and got the following message: : Windows was unable to complete the format." I had a DVD R/W disc in the drive.

A:Windows was unable to complete the format

You do not format CDs or DVDs with Windows Explorer.

You can use a Program, like Nero Burning ROM or similar to create a data disk, or a CD or DVD "formatted" as UDF or UDF/ISO, which will allow it to be recognized in Windows Explorer like it was a normal folder.

Have you tried partitioning it into two equal pieces to see if those partitions would format? I would personally give that a try - and a Quick NTFS format shouldn't be taking a long time.

We have a computer that is connected to a Cisco ASA router. This local router sets up an encrypted tunnel to a Cisco ASA router at a remote location. This remote location has a couple of web servers. From the workstation, I am able to ping (by DNS name and IP address) both web servers, see the ports 80 and 443 open and can always resolve one of the web pages (we'll call it The other webpage we'll call we cannot resolve.

After researching this with wireshark, I can see that the workstation sends a "Client Hello" to, but doesn't see any "Server Hello" response back. However, from the web server side, a packet capture reveals that it does attempt to send its' "Server Hello, Certificate, Server Key Exchange, Server Hello Done" to the workstation, but it doesn't make it to the workstation.

If we change the workstation's IP address to another IP address in the local subnet, it is able to communicate with the web server for about a day and then something locks up that IP address permanently and then SSL handshake will no longer complete until I change the workstation IP address to a new/different IP address in the local subnet.

Hi Guys,

My C drive (WD 60GB) is a little unreliable, so I've replaced it with a bigger WD 160 GB - both IDEs.

All file backed up, both externally and on a 40 GB D drive.

Lifted the bonnet, and replaced the C drive with no problems - and then began the long task of reinstalling XP via the supplied CD. So far so good ...

Got to the "Welcome to Setup" page, hit <enter> and tried to agree to the EULA by tapping F8 - then nothing happened! It's as if the key doesn't work!

Am I doing something wrong, or do I have a keyboard with an F8 key that doesn't work??

Any advice appreciated.

Dell Dim4600 with Logitech wireless keyboard ...

A:Installing new HD; unable to complete XP setup!

I have a feeling this is more of a keyboard problem than anything else.

Go into your bios and enable usb legacy support. Save and exit bios.

Hopefully, that`ll allow your computer to recognise the F8 key when pressed.

If that still doesn`t help, then try using a ps/2 keyboard, just until the installation is complete.

Regards Howard
