Reverted to XP On Laptop

Q: Reverted to XP On Laptop

My laptop has a web Cam built into it
sound card,
Switch to wireless mode,
Press and hold the Fn Functionality button to activate other options eg; brighten up screen or raise and lower volume etc...
That all worked when I had vista installed, but when I installed XP Professional, things have strangely disappeared eg web cam not working and the little sound symbol that you get in the bottom right hand corner isn't there and the other things I have mention above.
Will some one be as kind to offer advice on what too do?

Here's what I have done to try to fix it I bought a program Driver Robot and reinstalled all little drivers you don't think about. Amongst Installing it all I managed to install a sound hardware called Sigma Tel Audio which doesn't work at all.
When you click on device manager you'll find it has a quotation mark on it.

Are laptops built to a default windows which can only be the "Only" windows installed on it??

Hi there

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire for the business & I was very specific at time of purchase that it must NOT run Vista as the accounting software I run is not compatible with Vista.

All went well for about a month & then the accounting software started to play up. I contacted their tech support people & they talked me through a few fixes however during these fixes we discovered latent COMPATIBILITY FOLDERS on the computer that simply should not be on a machine unless it is running Vista. I contacted the store I bought it from & they admitted that it had originally come with Vista but had been upgraded to run Windows 7 Home Premium prior to purchase. He told me to come in & they would remove the components that had not been removed properly during upgrade.

I was unable to go in that day but told them to expect me within a day or two at the most however before I could get back (the following night in fact) the computer ran some scheduled updates from Microsoft & when I went to use it the next day it was all sorts of wrong! It didn't even look the same (desktop) & files were missing or moved. When I went to online help I kept getting diverted to Vista help rather than Windows 7 help. I contacted the computer store again & they said that the update may have found these compatibility folders & freaked out & reverted the machine back to Vista...???

Anyway, I have lost loads of files that I had not yet backed up as I was planni... Read more

A:After update, laptop reverted FROM Windows 7 TO Vista?????

Hello Skye,

Sorry, but a Windows Update WILL NOT revert a upgraded Windows 7 back to Vista like that.

It sounds a lot more likely that the computer store messed up and did a factory restore from the recovery partition on your computer, and that is what restored Vista since that was on your computer from the factory.

If this is what they did, then that most likely may have also wiped out all data that was previously on your computer for good.

I wouldn't let them get away with trying to cover up their mistake with a BS line about it being caused by a Windows Update.

I upgraded an installation to Win 10, and I didn't like it too much, so I did the revert back to 8.1 feature (you have 30 days to change back). When I went back to 8.1, a pop up malware started happening. I had it about a year ago, and thought it was gone. Voicefive survey browser pop up. Seems kind of weird how it returned out of the blue.
Anyhow, I've tried a bunch of tools to attempt ridding this thing from the PC, but it keeps coming back. Also read online for hours, and there does not seem to be a way to kill this thing short of resetting the browser. I really don't want to do that. Passwords, settings, favs, plugins. I use firefox as main browser, but I remember this bug going across all browsers.
What's even more strange is that I have a dual boot to Win 7 also, and the same infection appeared on that one as well. Just seeing if anyone knows about a program that can get rid of the voicefive popup. It appears as a pop-under ad in a small window. Still no combofix for Win 8.1?

Reverted back to W7 from W10 on grandsons Laptop using the Samsung install disk but cannot get it to install updates. Disc came with SP1 on it and about 4 years old if that makes any difference,
Windows updates just shows the updating and does nothing.
Apart from Downloading IE11 from the Microsoft sight nothing else updates. laptop is sluggish and struggles to cope with little things.
tried one of the Microsoft fix its which repaired 3 things but still will not download updates.
probably something simple any ideas welcome.

It didn't "revert back to SP1", it just didn't install. Thus the could not install notification.

As for why this happened, there are various reasons, one of which could be a patch or two missing. Make sure you have "all" important and reccommended updates, then try again.

Look through this link for some suggestions...Vista SP2 is out

The XP logo on startup is fine, but the welcome screen and everything else is in 4-bit, and after a while, it gets worse, overlapping screens, flickering... very annoying and impossible to do ANYTHING. First, I tried simple things, like properties, settings... nothing. Then I tried updating the monitor driver. Nothing. I installed a new NVIDIA driver. Nothing. GeForce? Nope. So, I am hoping that someone out there has had the smae problme and knows how to fix it. Thanks in advance!

Brand new Lenovo z580 with I5 3 series 6gb ram etc Win8/64 HP plus Avast AV.

Initial windows updates download and install, then on rebooting it gets to approx 10% install, and then reverts updates and reboots again.

I can see from update history rhat 13 updates have succeeded of which 7 are for Office and 2 for Intel.

I've tried the repair tool, which said it fixed a couple of things, but frankly has made no difference. Unfortunately I get no diagnostics on why all these other updates are reverted.

Any advice? Thenks.

A:New system updates reverted.

Install only important updates first, once theyre successful then do the optional updates..

As long as the harddrive is active, the system is busy, you may just have to wait it out..

unplug all unnecessary USB devices then try again

There has been something strange going on with a shared PC at work for a while. Files have been disappearing, whole folders have been disappearing. I removed the two SATA hard drives and ran a data recovery utility on them while they were connected to another PC by a HDD dock. I was able to find the files I was looking for, but when I reconnected the drives, the PC had reverted back to its state from about two or three years ago. Programs, files-everything that had been updated is gone. Is it possible that I did not reconnect the drives correctly? I handled them very carefully. I've done this before and I've never had this issue. P.S. The initial issue (data disappearing) seems to have had something to do with system updates. Any help would be greatly appreciated as our QuickBooks files and everything are at stake here. Thanks.

Okay, it was a stupid thing to do but I tried Windows 10 last night. It installed successfully but I didn't like it. It had the option to revert back to Windows 7 so I did. Now it won't open. I used Windows Recovery Environment to repair the boot problems I thought it might have. (MBR, BCD) That didn't work. It will open fine in safe mode but not in normal mode. It goes straight to the Windows Recovery Page. Any help would be appreciated.

Gazzer mate I don't know quite what you want to do but if you have all your data saved then you could try a factory restore because if it was a factory installed 7 then there would be a factory recovery partition that when used will take the machine back to as it came out of the manufacturers site - as new . Now this will lose the data and programs of course which is why I asked if you have your data backed up.

Now what you do is to hit the restore key while booting in most cases but beign a Dell I am not sure but this may give you a few options

I was working on my Uncle's office PC installing 13 Optional Updates including NetFramework 4.5.2 which had queued for restart.

During the interim Malwarebytes found what appeared to be serious infection Rogue.multiple (it said it Quarantined but isn't in that file) which when googled said needed ComboFix. I ran Combofix which found a jumble of what appears to be spyware but which could be more serious - I'll upload it to Security for analysis.

But this post concerns the Updates which had been forgotten so after Combofix reboot started to install and then Reverted back for 20 minutes, then a restart, then Windows started very sluggishly to the desktop. I Checked for Updates and it had 3 minor Optionals but none of the other ones it reverted.

I brought the PC home and now there are 12 Important and Optional Updates which seemed to install but again at reboot Reverted Back quickly shutting down, then at startup said Configuring, got up to 35% and changed to Welcome. Do I need to reset Updates?

Your informed advice is greatly appreciated as I'm getting ready to travel and need to have this fixed.

A:Reverted back - Where did those Updates go?

I don't see anything particularly nasty in the Combofix log - there are a couple of PUPs there, but nothing really bad.
I'd do a reset of WU and see if that makes any difference.
Post your C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file before and after, and I'll see what I can see. (but it may not be in time for you)

as the topic says, i tried installing the newest ie, but instead it got reverted back to ie6 for some strange reason. already had an earlier build of ie8 installed with no problems at all, but this one really doesnt want to be installed.

i read a couple of ppl stating that sp3 is some sort of a problem. should i try removing sp3, then install ie8, and then install sp3 again perhaps?

A:cant install ie8, reverted back to ie6

I don't have an answer for you. However I must post this caution for members who may download IE8 to try and help you. Please note that this program is a pre-release beta version of a product and not completely tested to ensure its stability or reliability. What is beta software? After an initial round of in-house testing, software publishers often release new programs to be tested by the public. These pre-release versions are called beta software, usually denoted by a "b" in the version number, e.g., Netscape Navigator 2.0b5. Since the publisher couldn't possibly test the software under all possible conditions, it is reasonable to expect that wider use of the software may uncover problems that were not discovered during in-house testing. The publisher expects to be notified when users find such problems so that the program can be fixed before its official release. In general, you should expect to run into bugs whenever using any piece of beta software. These bugs may range in severity from minor features that don't work to problems that cause your computer to crash. You should decide whether the benefit of new features in a beta program outweighs the risk of program instability before choosing to use a piece of beta software. You should also be aware that UITS will not have thoroughly tested beta software, nor will the software be guaranteed by its maker, so you should not expect the same level of support as you would receive for an official release version of the prog... Much shareware I have which I long ago entered registration codes for now acts like I just installed the programs as unregistered.

I did not rollback my PC to a prior state, etc..

For those familiar with Sandboxie:

I have a registered version. It still "knows" it's registered but has partially erased the sandboxes, (they are still in the sandbox sub, but Sandboxie doesn't "know" it),and Sandboxie started a new config file.

What might cause this to happen?

Thank you.

I have a friend who wants some help. She has a computer that was used by her grandson. It was Windows 8 when she got it but we upgraded it to 8.1 and set it up as her computer. She has been using it for about eight or nine months now with no problems, it seemed there was no trace of her grandson't stuff but she has just rung me to say that when she turns it on now, it goes to the log in part for her grandson and she also thinks it is now Windows 8. again, not 8.1. I have to help her tomorrow and would appreciate any suggestions of how it can be fixed. Has anyone else had this happen?

A:Windows 8.1 apparently has reverted to 8

First off verify that it is in fact 8.0 and not 8.1. Open the System screen and see what it lists under Windows edition. On my PC in small print it says Windows 8.1, but the large blue text to the right just says Windows 8. If it is Windows 8.0, my guess is the grandson did a factory recovery to fix or cover up something he did. If it is just Windows 8.0, doing all the available Windows updates should make the upgrade to 8.1 available as an option in the Windows Store. You do the upgrade though the windows store. Some GUI features have been removed from the latest development build of Google Chrome, with the Mountain View-based search giant indicating that it needs to do additional testing before implementation. Early adopters can now download Google Chrome 5.0.375.17 for Windows and Mac OS X, through the Dev channel, and those already familiar with past version 5 testing releases will notice a few changes. Essentially, Google has decided to remove some features, impacting the UI.

My computer recently reverted to an old login setup/profile without any prompting. The only thing I did was remove the PC from its power source, installed a wireless NIC (netgear G) and powered back up to find old login info from a previous user and password. How do I go back to the one I setup?

I'm sure I'm not including enough key info, please, ask for more and I'll respond asap. Thanks.

A:XP reverted to old login do I go back?

You should start up your computer, and then hit f8 or whichever f key it is for your computer. Then you should start up into safe mode with out networking. Once your computer is all set up you should go to start > control panel > User accounts. Then you can change things in there to the users that were on there.

I believe that is how it works.

Yesterday morning when I turned on my computer it got as far as the second screen and stopped. It said that the CMOS settings were wrong and CMOS Memory Size was wrong. I should Press F1 to run SetUp or F2 to load default values and continue.
After I phoned the Microsoft Helpline I pressed F1 and was able to reset time and date and all was well.
However I am puzzled as to what could have changed the date and time as only a few hours before my wife had turned on the computer with no problem, played a few games and then turned it off again.
The computer is only about three months old and I have Windows XP.
Anyone have any ideas?. Thanks Roger

Hey guys I have a weird problem here, my computer reverted it's settings like the day after reformatting it which was 2 weeks ago, don't know why. My installed applications still here but the desktop shortcuts, pinned programs in the taskbar are missing, browsers are still here but the history, cache, add-ons, extensions and every settings for the browsers are deleted, it's like a newly installed one. Also a weird problem with the theme, currently on safe mode (just wanted to go to safe mode), my theme is like Windows XP, don't know that status in normal mode yet. Also before I can get to the desktop, it say's "Welcome" and then after that, this word appeared "Preparing your Desktop". I didn't do anything that will restore the PC to the date of reformatting it.

Edit: I know the reason, my PC did a system recover not restore without my interaction or anyone's interaction, what I did earlier was, plug the cables to the socket, turn on the PC and then selected safe mode (just wanted), while loading files, I went away for a while (don't know what's happening), after coming back, it was on the desktop, noticed shortcuts are missing but files are still there (working), restarted it, noticed that the "Preparing your Desktop" is appearing on the welcome screen. Will do system restore now, and see if every settings, files, etc., is restored, if it works, I need to know what caused my PC to do a system recover without my interaction or anyone's interactio... I had something strange happen on one of my laptops couple a days ago.

I opened it up. I'm on XP. The first thing I noticed was that my Show Desktop icon in the bottom quick-launch bar was missing. Other icons were all there.

Next I opened Google Chrome, and the bookmarks bar was gone and my start pages had been replaced with the standard "new tab" page that you see when you click open a new tab (big icons for Chrome Web Store, Gmail, Youtube, Google search). I also noticed that a Skype button had been added at top right next to Settings icon.

The next thing I saw was that when opening up MS Word or Excel, I get a dialog box that says Windows is installing something or other, to insert the disk. At another point it asked in a dialog box to enter my name (first box) and initials (second box). I don't remember seeing that one before. Initials?

Skype was logged out, it's normally set to sign in automatically. My username and password were not in the sign-in box, those were blank.

Firefox seemed unaffected.

Hoping there's a simple standard explanation for this kind of strangeness.

Today I installed 6 updates that were released April 7, 2008. However, upon doing so, ALL of my Windows settings were revered to factory: desktop, taskbar, program files, everything. The installed updates were as follows:KB947864 - Cumulative Secutiry Update for IE7 for x64-based SystemsKB948881 - S.U. for ActiveX Killbits for x64-based SystemsKB941693 - S.U. for W.V. for x64-based SystemsKB948590 - S.U. for W.V. for x64-based SystemsKB938371 - Update for W.V. for x64-based SystemsKB890830 - Win. Malicious Software Removal Tool x64Luckily, system restore was able to revert to my pre-update settings, but I have no idea which update(s) caused this issue. If anyone can shed some light on this situation, I'd appreciate it.

Also, I suggest a bit of caution when updating until this situation is resolved, unless you're looking to restore your system to factory.

A:Yesterday's Updates (4/8/08) Reverted to Factory

Didn't see exactly that...but yesterday's updates did not go well for me. I encountered them upon shutting down the computer and it sat with the update message for "2 of 7" for > 14 hours...finally ending within 20 hours.

Afterwards, I see that KB941693 succeeded, KB938371 failed and the rest were ignored. I did all the updates except the MSRT (I mistakenly thought that was the one which failed) from the windows update tool and the updates succeeded.

I have an HP Pavilion laptop that came with Win 8.1 installed. Last year, I upgraded it to Win 10, and the upgrade went smoothly, but the HDMI out didn't work any more. Since I use that a lot, and I couldn't find an easy solution for it, I used the recover feature to revert back to Win 8.1.

I plan to try Win10 again when the new edition comes out in August, but I'm aware of the July 29 deadline to upgrade to Win 10 in order for the upgrade to be free.

Am I correct in assuming that when I upgraded to Win 10 last year, that I'm now permanently registered with Microsoft, and I can wait until August to upgrade to the new version? Or do I have to be running Win10 before July 29 in order for the new version to be free? I don't want to install the thing twice in two weeks if I don't have to.

Thanks for any help.

A:Upgraded to win10, then reverted back. Am I still registered?

You "should" be fine. Can't say 100% now, but your PC should have gotten a digital entitlement for Windows 10, via the free upgrade. Assuming you upgraded and activated. You don't lose the digital entitlement when you do the rollback.

Hi,I know this seems like an XP issue but i think i still may be infected as these changes/restrictions were done straight after my symantic detected and deleted the 'trojan.fakeAV' which was file 'bolflphtssd.exe'Basically Symantec deleted the virus and didn't need to reboot. But just to be sure I started in safe mode and ran malwarebytes which came up clean. I then shut-down, restarted again only to find the theme had gone to classic (and un-able to revert back) and the network connection was removed, or constantly in the process of handshaking or syncing with the network.I have ran numerous scans with symantec and mbytes in normal mode and safe mode but they have come clean.Any ideas? Hey guys, I hope this is the right section,

I had Grub and Kubuntu, then was done with linux for the time being, so i cleared the partition that it was on, and when i restarted grub was giving an error etc, so all i could find was my vista 64 cd, and after some reading on MS support pages, being that they used the same loader to fix it with that dvd.

So i ran this in the cmd prompt:

bcdedit /export c:\BCD_Backup
attrib bcd -s -h -r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot

and everything was dandy, it fixed the loader.... but put the vista boot screen(the simplistic screen with the loading bar)

so i go access to my windows 7 iso, burned it, and re did the same process (but used the repair option first cuz it asked me and i figured it would be easier) and then ran the same commands to hopefully refresh the loader w/ the possibly newer windows 7 one(mainly for the boot logo)

but its still showing the old vista logo

i know this seems silly but how can i fix it back to the newer windows 7 one?

A:Boot screen reverted to vista after repair

Welcome to the forums ....Try opening a command prompt and enter scannow/sfc ... see if this will help... if not, the simplest way may be a clean install of windows 7....

Hey, I downloaded a custom icon pack which replaces the original ones with Vista. After installing it, I got most of them to work BUT most of the folder icons are reverted back to Vista's default. If I delete the thumbnail cache and refresh my folders, the new icons are shown for about 2 seconds before reverting back to the default.

This only seems to happen if I set the folder display size to Medium/Large/etc, but if I set it to Small I can see the tiny version of the folder's custom icon properly.

Below is an example of one folder using a new icon and the rest reverting to the default:
Anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? I've tried repairing/restructuring the thumbnail cache, etc, but that doesn't seem to be the problem.

My laptop appears to have defaulted to its factory settings. All of my personal settings have been deleted and while all the programs I had downloaded remain, when opened they act as if I have never before used them. There even appear to be programs that I had previously downloaded and deleted back on my system. I loaded windows 10, could not get on with it, so ended up reverting back to windows 7.  Then realised it had corrupted my recovery partition.  Used my Original Windows 7, to re-install. However, I could not find the correct way to install the drivers that were listed on HP Support pages. There was no list of which driver to install first, and I still have Other Devices on control panel, showing a problem with yellow flag.  Is there somewhere that I can find what I want.

Can someone guide me to the location to change the default language to English? Many thanks.

The page address starts with (custom search?) and there are some options missing . It only shows web and image, no search tools etc. Also the output is shifted to the left margin and the "go to next page" bit is missing the arrows for next. With firefox, it is all OK. Bing has stopped working completely in Chrome & IE. The picture is missing and none of the search actions do anything. MSN takes me to the NL page rather than the EN-GB one. It reverts to this after I reset it. takes me to my emails OK. I use keepass on my laptop. I store all my username/passwords for everything on it. Today i noticed when i started keepass... i noticed I could not log into several of my accounts. I had wondered why. Until i took a look and many username/passwords for certain sites are not shown in it. I then looked and see many of my username/passwords... all of these got reverted back to early last year. Not long ago i had changed my passwords for many sites and added other sites and passwords.

So many of my email accounts, i could not log into it because the password thats in the keepass that i copy and paste now... well its the wrong password b/c i had these pw's changed. It wasn't that long ago but it wasn't that recent. I did however have a piece of paper that i wrote many of my username/passwords down in case. However, i didn't do this for every single site.

Does anyone know what happened here and how did this happen? I always used an old version of keepass and everytime keepass starts, it ask if i want to upgrade and i always clicked no. Im not sure but i think there is a small chance i could have clicked yes this time though i dont think this happened.

Can someone tell me how in the world did this happen to my keepass? I also noticed i had 2 keepass. I have one that says keepass1 and keepass2. Keepass2 was the new one where i made changes to it. My wife's laptop auto updated to Windows 10 last week and everything had been working perfectly until yesterday. Suddenly her desktop/start menu reverted from the new Windows 10 start menu to the old Windows 8.1 desktop. I did some searching and supposedly if you go through control panel, appearance, taskbar and start menu properties there should be a start menu tab where you select which one you want. That tab doesn't exist on her machine or mine for that matter. I also verify that notebook mode was turned off.

How can I get her desktop/start menu back to the standard Windows 10 style?

Hi, well first of all the reason I changed it was because I tried to optimize (my mistake) by reducing it. My router is set to 1365 MTU manually after a support tech from Linksys asked me to change it for a previous problem. I used the "netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wireless Network connection" mtu=nnnn store=persistent" command to change it around to find what MTU Windows uses automatically. It was set at 1500 (for both LAN and WLAN). I set the WLAN to 1365 to see how it would perform, didn't see a noticable change I believe so I switched back. Now I see a slight lag when loading sites. I also compared the time against another pc that I did not tamper with (which by default was set to 1500) and that one worked normally.

I fear I may have overridden Windows defaults for handling MTU since after manually setting it to 1500 (was originally 1500 when it was untouched) it lags a little. For the time being I set it to 1365 to get the performance that I normally got with default settings.

My question is if it's possible to get the original performance back with the MTU set back to what it was originally (1500)?

Also I learned my lesson and won't be trying to change settings without first making sure they are completely reversible. Also I'd like to do this without using System Restore.

Thanks in advance.

I made the mistake of upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10 on my Dell XPS 702X laptop before reading that Dell does NOT intend to upgrade drivers to support the laptop on the newer OS. I reverted back to 10 due to the fans running all the time and the laptop was always running hot.

The reversal process appeared to go fine without errors, but almost every day since August the system will suddenly stop and reboot. It always hangs on the welcome screen. After looking up the issue on various forums, I found that a temp fix that sometimes helps is to turn off the wireless lan card during hard shutdown and restart, or sometimes booting to safe mode with a command prompt and running chkdsk /f.

It did it again today, and I started digging deeper. I have turned off the automatic restart in properties and now it should BSOD me with a more specific error. The error log indicates a LONG list of the same error. I'm not savvy enough to begin to understand this! Thanks in advance:

System: Vista Home Premium 32 / Sony Vaio Computer / (6) acomdata external hard disc drives - USB 2.0 connectors.

Six months ago I converted all of the Ext HDs from fat32 to NTFS, using the windows utility, in order to store multi gb files. Today, I attempted to store a 6.5gb single file on one of the hard disks and received an insufficient space notice. When I checked Computer - Drive - Properties, I found that my format had changed back to Fat 32. I then checked "format.." on the right click menu and found that the file system of the drive was still listed as NTFS (Default). And there was an option to "restore defaults". Will this option restore the NTSF in properties without deleting content from the drive?

I assume that, regardless, of what properties indicates it still must have the NTSF directories because there are several single files of over 5gb on the drive.

Three of the other drives have the same issue. Sorry, if this is a newbie problem, but your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Up until a few days ago I could view thumbnails/icons of actual PDF files while in Windows Explorer. Now I only get the Adobe logo icon. Other file thumbnails are working.

I tried a system restore back to before this started but it didn't correct the problem. Prior to that I tried changing the file association to another program and back again but that didn't work either. Any other ideas?

Windows 7 spoiled me-- I really liked being able to see what the file looked like before I had to go opening several to find the one I want. (When I'm creating document graphic designs I usually make three or four different trial versions which can get confusing when I am away from my work for a day or two!)

I tried Googling the problem and found some discussions on other forums but still haven't found a satisfactory solution.

I am not sure how to begin to describe my problem, so I will recount my experience in chronological order and describe the problem as I go. I have provided a couple of images for reference as well.

Last night, I only had one hard disk in my computer, a Seagate. It is Disk 0 in the Disk Management screenshot below. I installed two more hard disks (both Western Digital), converted them to dynamic, striped them, and created a volume (G. I moved some data to the new G: volume. If it's relevant, then it may help you to know that one of them already had a Windows installation of its own. Reformatting it should have deleted all that information, though. Then I went to bed.

When I woke up, my computer had restarted because Windows had automatically updated. This is where things start to go wrong. My computer was stuck at boot-up on a blank screen with a flashing underscore. I restarted a couple of times, and Windows would try to boot but fail and stop at the same screen. I went into the BIOS, and while I could manually select my Seagate from a boot list, it was not showing up in my BIOS' boot order settings. I removed every other device from the boot order, and my computer will now boot normally. So, I have actually resolved this issue but am telling you about it in case it may be relevant to my current problem.

Afterward, I noticed that my G: volume was not appearing in Explorer. I checked Disk Management and discovered that one of my disks has failed (screenshot below). He... Read more

I'm not familiar with cmd repairing from the installation DVD nor from Hiren's Boot CD 10.1.

I'm thinking the problem could be with the partitioning, but I've got no idea how. Both disks have two partitions:

I'm not sure that you can boot from either one of those disks without formatting & installing again. I assume you reverted to IDE or AHCI controller in the BIOS, when you tried to boot from one of the single disks?

I've been offered the same 14 updates over and over. They fail to configure after reboot and are reverted. In the attached picture all show 800F0826 except for the one marked (that one is 80070005). I suspect permissions on the registry or filesystem are to blame.

I removed IE11 from my features a year ago when IE11 updates started to fail. I tried to add IE11 back,. but the updates still failed. I also tried turning IIS off in add remove features, but those got reverted.

Cleaned out Catroot2, CBS and WindowsUpdate.log in repair boot shell to get logs as clean and empty as possible. Not sure if that was a bad idea, but I got frustrated.
Reattempted update
Ran SubInACL* to grant access to the Adminstrators to registry and file system. Those logs are huge (3 GB plus and I don't have tools to parse them, plus I don't know where failure to set permissions are to be expected.
I ran latest SURT and got a clean CheckSUR log
SFC /scannow found no issues.
Attached is the windows update log
The zip file for the CBS folder is too large to attach so here is the OneDrive link Microsoft services

Just last week I'd gotten my iPhone & updated the iTunes to the new iTunes 10. But just a few days ago I turned on the computer and it had a blank screen for a while so i turned it off then on again. It told me it didn't shut down properly so instead of starting it normally I chose the other option of, well, I don't even remember. Then it asked if I wanted to reboot or something like that & make the laptop go back to the previous condition in which it was better, which, unfortunately was before I'd updated the iTunes. So now whenever i try to open it, the message "The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a new version of iTunes". I even tried downloading the new iTunes hoping it could pick up all my hopefully-not-lost music but in the process of installing it, it "could not access network location %APPDATA%\" and it requires QuickTime, which it looks like i have.
My parents have no idea about this & they will kill me if I've ruined my iTunes and, i may know my iPhone but I sure cannot figure out my own laptop

P.S. when it had asked me if I wanted to do the reboot/restart thing, it had told me it cannot be undone. So this shows what kind of comprehension skills I have

Hi. I bought Windows 7 64bit home edition on a disk with my new Novatech pc over a year ago, and it successfully activated. Until 30 days ago it ran fine. Then the Windows not genuine pop got going with a link for activating online. I used slmgr /dlv which showed that the computer thinks my Windows is in its 'grace period', on a countdown from 30 days to 0 (tomorrow!).

Any suggestion, anyone? Here's what did NOT work:

Online activation (nothing happens)

Phone activation

Microsoft support - phoned them.
They talked me through a few things that did not work, then gave up.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 2330 from a pawn shop - previous owner installed win 7 Ultimate 64-bit (replacing win 8). I got the activation code and downloaded a good copy of win 7 Ult 64-bit (from MS site) to do a fresh install to delete all his stuff !! Big mistake Cannot connect to internet. Multiple drivers out. Found a LAN driver to correct Ethernet driver but still unable to connect. Not very good at OS level diags (more of a "know just enough to be dangerous" type) Any help is appreciated. Have a laptop connected so can download and load via stick. I entered as much info as I could garner in the "System Specs" page of my profile. Thanks.

It shutdown and would not startup. One time I saw Boot Mgr image corrupt , system cna't boot. Another message was File Header checksum doesn't match computer checksum. The power light would flash. I finally get it to come up up and it says: DQS TRAINING FAILED ON PREVIOUS BOOT REVERTED TO SLOWER DRAM SPEED. I keep getting this. If I leave my computer on and not shutdown it is fine. Only when I restart I get message??? I have not changed any software or hardware, or memory. I ran memtest and it said memory was good.

I think this may have come up before but cant find the answer I'm looking for. I get this message every single time I start my puter up. After many searches I found lots of threads but always got bogged down in pc jargon. I dont mind if I dont know why ram speed is set at a certain speed, but the thing thats bugging me is that I never got this message for 8 months after building this pc and now I get it every boot. What sort of things would cause this to happen all of a sudden? I'm just wondering if my hardware I spent good money on isn't working at well/fast as it could be. If its a case of setting the ram speed lower, why now and not from day one?

Hope someone can shed some light

Hello, everyone.

I was playing Diablo 2 today and my Internet Explorer 6 icon on my desktop (icon available in desktop settings, not a shortcut) seems to have reverted to something from Internet Explorer 4 or earlier.

I've tried re-applying the Windows XP theme (this worked for me on the original Diablo on my old PC when the start button did something similar) but no luck. I'm good at computing (e.g. I can edit the registry easily, follow instructions, I know quite a lot about XP) but I've never had a problem like this before. I'm gonna have to ask for help on this one.

Any help would be excellent thanks. Also, I've had a similar problem on another computer when after installing IE7 the icon disappeared and went to the default XP "white-page" icon. It needed a registry edit to fix it; are they fixed in a similar fashion?

A:Solved: Internet Explorer 6 Icon "Reverted"

Doctor_Pepper, Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the "Color Quality" from 32 bit to 16 bit, restart your computer then change it back to 32 bit. If this doesn't correct the problem download Tweak UI at the link below. After you install it you'll find it in Start>Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI. Open it and under Repair then choose Rebuild Icons.

UPDATE: I went into themes and everything is greyed out except the basic old themes. I tried find and fix problems for aero themes display but it didn't come up with anything... when looking through google I see things about updating registry entries but I'm not sure I should be doing that based on google suggestions with my luck.

Windows did an update and now my system looks like its running an older version of windows...see attached picture. If I do a system restore to before the update I can get it running like it should again, but there should be a way to fix this without the restore, I just can't figure it out. Any ideas

I'm also getting errors about not being able to log into the windows system to check for updates when I start the computer, not sure if this has anything to do with it.

This has happened on two consecutive days:
On closing Windows, I am told that 1 of 126 updates is downloading. My PC shuts off but, as the download begins in late evening, I don't know if the shut-off occurs after all items have downloaded. When I turn on the PC next morning, I am told Windows is installing updates and reconfiguring; after the latter has reached 13%, a "failure" is indicated, Windows begins "reverting" the changes and eventually reboots to the normal opening screen. I have seen no error codes.
How can I stop this irritation?

I originally had windows 7 pro and installed windows 10 when it was available for free.
My machine typically is powered off when I am not using it. The morning before the last day of the free download my computer reverted itself back to windows XP. I have no idea how it happened. It is asking me to activate my version of Wndows XP. I never had windows XP on that machine. It was purchased with Windows 7 professional.
Had anyone else experience this ? If so what did you do.. I had not used that machine in a few weeks because its not my main computer.

A:Windows 10 reverted to windows XP all on its own.

The simple solution would be to do a clean install of Windows 10 since you said you had installed prior to the last day of the free upgrade

My Windows 7 has been rock solid until Saturday. It's been so good I've lost all my trouble shooting chops. Now, almost none of my windows programs will work.

Saturday, Windows Update pushed about 33MB of updates to my system. After rebooting to configure the updates and start Windows it gave me an error to the effect of: "Update Failure, reverting changes. Do not turn your computer off." It rebooted several times with the same message and finally hung on the "Shutting Down" screen. When I say hung, I left it on when I went to bed about midnight and it was still in the same place when I looked at it the next morning around 10. Naturally, I just unplugged it and restarted it. To my surprise, it advised me that all the updates had been successful and booted up. Unfortunately, only a few of my programs will load and work. I can get into Control Panel and a few of the applets that's about all. I backed out all of the Saturday updates to see if it would work as before but no joy. The programs I try to run get loaded into memory, I can see them in the Task Manager Process window but nothing else happens.

Today, I backed out all the updates one by one to see if that would restore some functionality but no joy. I have no idea what is going wrong, Event Viewer doesn't seem to tell me anything useful that I recognize. Anyone have any suggestions besides tearing it down and starting over?

I just bought 2 brand new laptops, both running Windows 7 Home Premium, both connected via a wireless router. Laptop A is an HP, Dads (mine). Laptop B is a Compaq, sons. Was having trouble getting either one to see each other on the homegroup network. Verified I have ipv6 enabled. Read to turn off firewalls. That seemed to work for mine, laptop A, but my sons, laptop B, still will not see mine. But I see his.

I have ran the troubleshooter on sons, laptop B, and it doesn't detect any problems. Is there anything else I should try? I have left the Homegroup and rejoined on both laptops. Thats when mine (laptop A) started seeing sons (laptop B). But doesn't work when I leave and rejoin on sons.

Why does it have to be so frustrating? Any help or info would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you. DadsComputer (Laptop A)

Hello all - first time poster on this forum.

I have a bust up fairly old Intel Celeron 600mhz laptop which could do with a new case/shell (not a bag, it needs the equivalent of a new desktop tower) but I don't know where to find one. I believe this is just a clone of similar laptops made around the same time and the model number is 6133. I was wondering if anybody knew somewhere I could purchase replacement shells/cases and if they stocked a case for this computer.

Everything on the laptop works fine except for a dodgy monitor cable (which would be fixed by moving everything into the new shell) so I don't intend to sell it for parts. I'm also quite experienced in fiddling with computers (my dad's a PC engineer so I've picked up quite a bit from him) and he is willing to help me get this laptop into tip top condition again.

I was also wondering if it would be possible to upgrade the motherboard and processor. At the moment it's a 600mhz intel celeron but I'd rather go with an AMD athlon of some sort as I believe them to be generally better. If anybody knows where I can purchase laptop motherboards to fit certain needs any help there would be gladly appreciated (am looking for a socket A motherboard). If the upgrade to Athlon is not possible I would like to know what the upgradability of my current motherboard is - I shall be looking inside the laptop within the next few days and can probably provide a number for it.

Howdy and welcome to the Forum.

Have you contacted the Manufacturer regarding replacement parts? That's where I would start.

BUT to be honest, although you do not give all the specs of the PC, I'd be willing to bet that you could replace the whole thing with a new laptop cheaper than replacing parts like case, MOBO, Processor, RAM, and HD !!!

So unless there is some "sentimental value", like the case broke stopping a bullet shot at you by terrorists...I'd shop for a new unit.

Basically i have a Lenovo ThinkPad L530 laptop.

I've created the recovery DVDs, but unbeknown to me at the time - you're only allowed to create one set. What i'd like is to put this onto a USB stick.

Currently i have:

DVD #1 - Boot Media: (312mb)

The boot DVD containing "BOOT" folder, BootMgr file which is quite small & Winre.Wim at about 300mb.

DVD #2 - Data DVD #1: (4.03GB)

factory recovery folder, recovery folder & Autorun file

DVD #3 - Data DVD #2: (3.87GB)

factory recovery folder & recovery folder (NO autorun file)

DVD #4 - Data DVD #3: (3.04GB)

factory recovery folder, recovery folder, LenovoQDrive file, qdrive icon file.
My USB stick is 16GB capacity.

So basically i'd like to make the USB stick the recovery media. I can't do this from the laptop as Lenovo only let you create one ......... so how can i do this? Can i do this would be the first question & if so - how?

A:Creating Lenovo Laptop Recovery media from DVDs. Laptop wont let me do

Hi Nelly I also have an Lenovo its a different model than yous is but I can make as many copies of the recovery discs
as I want . You could make a systems image which would be a lot better than the recovery discs as with them you will always have the bloated software that comes with Lenovo models saying that you would need a lot more space than your 16gb usb drive .

I recently purchased an ASUS A555DG-EHFX to take over for my wife's Win7 ASUS K50IJ-BBZ5 (both are 64-bit).

Obviously getting Windows 10 up and running out of the box was a breeze. Configuring WLAN connectivity was also easy, even though I have a hidden SSID and access control on devices on the router. Even getting Office up and running was fine - just uninstalled from the old computer, downloaded an installer file from Microsoft, using the product key, and that was fine.

The one hiccup has been getting my files and configuration settings (such as browser history and passwords and cookies) from the old computer to the new.

I have read that one can run Windows Easy Transfer on a Win7 machine, which I did (to an external HD), then copy the migwiz and migration folders from the system32 subfolder of the Win7 machine, to somewhere on the new machine, and run the migwiz.exe program from the migwiz folder.

This appeared to "know what it was doing" - it identified the user profiles captured in the transfer data, and allowed me to select which ones to transfer.

But when the process completed, I can't find any of the files from the Win7 laptop, and I can't see any of the profiles and configurations - the files themselves, or evidence that the computer is accessing them.

Also, the old laptop had a C/D HD partition, as does this, and it was pretty much program files on C and data (.docx and .xlsx files, etc.) on the D partition.

After running migwiz, the new computer ... Read more

The first time I turn it on, Dell logo appears for a second and then, black screen shows up. Then, I have to turn my laptop off and start it back again. Second time, it boots up without any problem. I am fed up of turning it on twice everytime, and also concerned that it will affect health of my Laptop . How can I fix this Issue, please help.
I don't have a Recovery CD or Windows 8 CD. Windows 8 was pre-installed on my Laptop.

If it's still under warranty, call Dell. The unit or parts might be covered for replacement.

I bought a new laptop - HP Compaq Presario, Intel Pentium Processor T4300 (2.1 GHz), 500 GB Hard Drive, 4 GB RAM, nVidia GeForce G 103M with 512 MB DDR2 dedicated graphics memory. After a week, i got the firs blue screen error after which it couldn't boot [i couldn't even get to BIOS).
I was out of the country, so my friend called the service staff who told him to try to run some tests, that time it worked, he got to BIOS, ran the tests, everything was fine and the laptop started up normally. Now, 2 weeks after, I'm getting blue screens continuously, and laptop won't boot. If it boots [and it usually happens when you hit it slightly, though, i don't know if it's a conincidence], windows 7 starts up normally and everything is working fine until the next blue screen shows up, which disables my laptop all over again.

Blue screen looks like this:

Technical information:

STOP: 0x0000000C2 (0x00000099, 0xFE8F40DC, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Collecting data for crash dump
Initializing disk for crash dump
Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk:100
Physical memory dump complete
Is it a software crash? Can I run Win 7 repair if I manage to boot it and how to do that? Is it my hard disk problem?
What to do? -.-

A:Blue screen BAD_POOL_CALLER; laptop won't boot, a new laptop dying?

If you can get it to work by tapping on the machine, then it doesn't sound like a software problem. It could be a bad system board or memory.

I would call HP again and see about getting service on the hardware.

Have been having this problem for a while now.

Every so often, the headhphone jack on my laptop just stops working after hours and hours of the laptop being on.

The built-in speakers of the laptop work fine. What happens is that while the computer is in use (after some random amount of time), any hardware plugged into the headphone jack of the laptop will not playback sound. This includes headphones, speakers and the like. The sound device manager in control panel shows sound being output, and if the headphones/speakers are disconnected, the audio plays fine on the built-in speakers on the laptop.

I haven't been able to figure out what exactly causes this problem. I have tried resinstalling the driver several times. I am 100% sure it isn't the headphones of the speakers that I use as I use these speakers and headphones on many other devices (phone, tablet etc.)

The only way that this issue gets fixed is if the computer is shut down and then rebooted (a restart doesn't work, the computer has to literally lose power for the problem to be fixed).

It seems very intermittent and I'm not sure how to approach this problem

Any ideas?

A:Headphone Jack on Laptop Stops Working Until Laptop is Powered Off

One idea would be a look the power plan in use. If you are running with the default Balanced power plan you may be seeing that nterfere by conserving battery power temporarily turning the audio off being a constant drain. Another thought could be a result of the onboard audio chip itself getting too warm where the hardware protection circuit will then come in and deactivate all sound. That is usually seen as far as the cpu temp as well as other major components. The audio being onboard would also be monitored by the bios not so much by Windows.

The other possible cause of losing sound would be the headphone jack or the board end having a cold solder point getting warm and expanding just enough to break the connection until cooled off. The complete shutdown of power would tend to suggest a temp or regulation issue where either the power plan or temp monitoring would have to be watched. And one more thing would be setting the laptop on a fan cooled stand or effective notebook cooling pad to draw heat away from the unit if you are not already using one. Laptops are known to get quite warm with extended use since everything is packed into a tight space with the typical serious lack of air flow unlike the usual desktop with front, rear, and side or top case fans in use if not water cooled.

You have some things to consider in the list of things there. Increased overall cooling, not planning to use the laptop for extended periods of time which can allow for something to overheat i... Read more

My laptop wireless is on, but when I search for networks to connect to, no wireless options appear while the laptop next to me has 3 options and connected fine.
The only available connect is for a dial up that I have never seen before.
I am sure the laptop wireless is on as the blue signal light is on. The laptop has never had to be directly connected to a cord but I checked the wires and everything is fine, which is obvious as the laptop I am on is connected as normal.

Please help, I have already wasted over an hour of work time trying to figure out what’s wrong!

A:Solved: Networks arenÂ’t showing up for my laptop, but a different laptop has perfect

would you post back the following tests
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Then run the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

My wifi connections goes off and on on my Hp laptop several times in an hours time. It stays off sometimes for two minutes and sometimes for 10 or more minutes. My other laptop and phone stay connected to the wifi. What do I need to do. I found this site thru anther forum and I went to their link they had in the forum and it took me to the InSSider Page of this site. I clicked on the download link for WIndows and it downloaded and installed on my computer and then just went back to that same page. I thought it was suppose to run a scan (analyzer) on my computer? So where and what do I need to do for it to run a scan on my computer to check the channels being used and possible interference with my wifi? Or if there is something else that I need to do to fix my wifi connection issue? Thanks in advance!!!

My laptop (envy m6 1162la) was not using the graphics card (AMD Radeon 7640M). I tried reinstalling the software AMD Catalyst but it wasn't detecting it either. I checked the windows device manager and the graphics card was greyed out (had to turn the option to show hidden devices because it wasn't showing). I tried updating drivers but it kept showing an error message (Code 45). Then I followed the steps in this guide and tried uninstalling the device, rebooting and reinstalling. Now it's not even showing in the manager, and I can't find the driver download page in the HP website. I also checked the AMD legacy software (catalyst) because it said it included the old drivers, but no luck so far. I'd appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks in advance.

Hello there,

We have a WRT300N Linksys router (updated firmware) with 2 very recent laptops (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9600 2.8GHz 3GB RAM 32-bit running Windows 7 - fully updated) connected to our wireless network.

Last week, everything was fine.

Two days ago, the internet connection for my laptop became intermittently VERY slow.
The internet service we have is for 30 mbps. I did a speed test but didn't have enough "juice" to finish the test. Even if I load, the page would time out or say that the server is down. Downloading of email is also intermittently VERY slow. I am unable to play any online games as my connection is not fast enough...

The other laptop works perfectly fine.

I scanned for viruses using Avira, for malware using MalwareBytes and ran diagnostic tests for my wireless card. All seems fine. I called my ISP and they said that all is fine on their side.

We tried unplugging the router/modem and rebooting the computer - no change.
I downloaded Xirrus WiFi Monitor and have enclosed the screenshot as well as my IP config /all.

In my device manager I have the following under Network Adapters (all updated):
1) Intel 82567LF Gigabit Network Connection
2) Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN
3) Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

My friend says it could be because of Second Life and all the java plugins it requires I could have a problem.

What could this be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Heres my problem, when I turn on my Presario, I get the Compaq screen, then it goes to the windows xp loading screen, and at the next step, when it should go to windows log in, it flashes a blue screen, too fast to read what it says, and reboots.
Now I just signed up here a couple of minutes ago and when I got to this forum I saw the recovery sticky and tried those directions. At the compaq screen I repeatedly tapped f10, but instead of giving me options (per the instructions) it seemed to do the diagnostic on it's own. It passed a lot of the functions, the only error being "system cmos checksum bad- used default settings". So I looked up the error and it says the error could be three things, bad cmos battery, bad bios update, or corruption due to incorrect shut down. Now, if I was to guess at one of these three options, I'd guess it was the battery. This is a pretty old laptop and as far as I know, the battery has never been changed. So heres my questions:
1.)Does this sound like a plausible explanation of whats wrong? I've had the hard drive go bad on me once before and the symptoms were completely different.
2.) If it was the cmos battery, would the laptop start with default settings, even though I haven't changed the battery?
3.) The laptop took a jolt shortly before this started happening, is it possible something just came loose?
4.) I had the laptop shut down on me once because the fan was clogged with dust and bound up (overheated). Now, with this probl... Read more
