USB Mouse Not Recognized, Bios Bad on Dell Vostro

Q: USB Mouse Not Recognized, Bios Bad on Dell Vostro

hi guys,
I have a Dell Vostro 220 desktop that's been running fine. Unfortunately something seems to have gone wrong when I updated the BIOS via the Dell website a few minutes ago.

Once Windows XP starts, it LOOKS like it's in safe mode (huge icons, etc.), even though it's not.

What's more, my USB mouse NO LONGER works. It's not even powered on.

Once the PC restarts, or I go into the set-up (before Windows loads), the mouse is ON again -- but not when Windows starts.

Is there a way to "reset" the bios so I can get things working again?? PLEASE HELP ME.

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to assist with a problem that suddenly started with my second computer (Dell Vostro 400)
Its running windows 7 home premium and all the sudden it now stops at the Dell bios version screen. It did this a couple times the lastfew days, but when I restarted it, it booted ok, but when I checked on it later then the computer was frozen again with a black screen. I have borrowed another computer from work and swapped out the hard drive, and it works fine with the other computer (same hardware). So I dont think its the hard drive. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Hey guys, I have a Vostro 410 that I recently tried to upgrade to BIOS version 1.03, because it rumored support for 8GB of ram, while the specifications state that the maximum ram supported on the board was 4GB. I ran the updater provided by dell in windows. The updater I used is

The updater appeared normal, told me I was on 1.0 and it was going to update to 1.03, I went ahead and pressed the update button and it erased the main block, then brought up an error message while trying to write the new version. I decided to shutdown because ultimately I couldn't leave it running forever. The BIOS is Phoenix and supposedly Phoenix has support for recovering BIOS by using win+b or fn+b, but I am having trouble getting these to work as I have a wireless keyboard and most things I've read say you have to use ps2, which isn't even included on this system. I have a usb floppy drive, as well as a conventional floppy drive and a usb flash drive. I've tried to use wincrisis with minidos.sys but haven't got any luck this far. I've already pulled the battery and let it sit for over 10 hours and that had no effect, I'm pretty sure this isn't a settings problem.

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks in advanced.

I've installed the latest BIOS into my TECRA S11-U10 and now my 'HID' device won't load - i.e. my USB dongled wireless mouse. I now have to remove dongle and re-insert before the TECRA will see the mouse.
Annoying, just about usable, but it is a PITA and I'm conscious of always 'making/breaking' the USB connection.

Must be something to do with BIOS and seeing HID devices on 'StartUp'?
Lastly, I have enabled Legacy USB device support in BIOS, but still no joy. Also, have tested mouse on other laptops - works fine on StartUp, so NOT the mouse.

Any suggestions, folks? Thanks....

A:Tecra S11 with BIOS 3.50 - USB mouse is not recognized on start-up

Disconnect your USB mouse and go to device manager.
Then delete all USB hubs and USB controllers from the device manager list.
Then reboot the notebook.
Wait until all USB ports have been recognized and installed again.
Then connect the USB mouse and check how it works.

You should also test different USB ports available on this notebook.

Ok I have read on here the post regarding the fix about this however I everything applies to windows XP. I need to know if the fix would work on windows 7 just the same?? Please help. The keyboard and mouse are USB and are not recognized in anyway. Thanks a bunch!!

A:Keybaord and Mouse not recognized on Dell Dimension 9150 running Windows 7

Can you post a link to the other post?

Having worked on hundreds of Dell's, I can say that we ran into this problem where occasionally, a USB keyboard or mouse would not be recognized by BIOS, every time. Since we had stacks of keyboards and boxes of mice, we would just grab a different one and try that. Usually that would do it. Once in a while, changing the BIOS to try to boot to CD first would work so I always thought it was a timing issue with BIOS. Nothing to be done about it other then search for the latest BIOS upgrade and take the chance of ruining the mobo if it failed.

So, try these tricks:

1) Set BIOS to boot from CD first (but leave it empty).
2) Check that your USB setting in BIOS is set for Legacy USB.
3) Try different keyboards and mice if possible.

The biggest hassles I had with the Dell's was getting a USB/wireless mouse or keyboard to work. Sometimes gave up and went with the wired USB devices.

Once you post the link, I'll go check that other fix.

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10. The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers , some higher. Will they ever test it??
If you try to upgrade, windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen) it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung. Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point . So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all.
Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8. Why not fix it.

A:Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012).

Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8?

I bought my Dell Vostro 3800 ST almost 2 years ago, sadly I didn't really do my research before I bought it, and it turns out, card that came with it wasn't really great for gaming and it's nearing the end of it's life.
So I'm planning to buy proper card, but my tower is waaay to slim to fit in it comfortably.
So my question is, will I be able to take my motherboard to another, non-Dell case? If so, what type of case would be good? I did try to find online, what type of motherboard it is, but if there's an answer to that question, I can't find or understand it.
I'd be grateful for any help provided :)

A:Will my motherboard from Dell Vostro 3800 ST fit into non-Dell case?

It's more or less a micro-ATX board so it will likely fit a standard case. That said, wiring the power switch, hard drive LEDs, etc. will be difficult - they're not standard and it may be a lot of trial and error to make work.

Hi DrPepper86,
Did the BIOS file downloaded completely? If not, use this link to download the file. You may find the steps in the below mentioned video useful:
Update your Dell PC's BIOS in 99 Seconds
If the above two steps (viz. downloading and installing) have been performed correctly and still the error appears, are your installing the BIOS file as an Administrator? If not, please ask your client to login as Administrator and then attempt to install the file.

johnboy18, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Unless there is an option in the bios to increase the amount of system ram allocated to graphics, there is nothing to do.

Also can not suggest/recommend a new video card as what you have despite it being sold as a desktop, is nothing more than a laptop built into the monitor with all the same limitations as far as upgrading parts goes.

This laptop had no issues, but I wanted to install a new OS.

I have done ("several times") a complete reformat and fresh install with a Windows 7 Professional, as well as, Vista Home Premium.

I have updated BIOS and Chipset drivers as well. The PC was not doing this prior to any reformat or full install, so its only after these processes

The screen continues to blackout, but the PC is still running. I do a hard power off and it comes back up, but continues to have the video go black constantly. I have read on the forum about this issue, but I have done all it states to do to try and remedy this problem.

Any help in resolving this issue, would be appreciated.

Basically, I have a DELL Vostro tower that currently has 1GB RAM. I bought a 2GB Crucial RAM DDR3L stick which i thought was compatible. However when i insert the RAM and swich on I get a double beep.
Can anyone please advise me what i'm doing wrong here as I really dont know what to do next.
I was thinking the problem may be that the RAM is DDR3L instead of DDR3, however i'm really not sure.

Hello. I have a Dell Vostro with the windows 7 operating system and an Intel Core 2 duo processor. I've had it for 15 months and I've never had any problems other than occasional freeze ups. Now, I switched to Century Link (not sure if relevant) but around 6 pm (Mountain time) the internet slowed down substantially and froze my webpages and it seemed like my entire computer stopped responding. So I held down the power button. When I tried to reboot, I chose the safety one to see if any files were damaged or corrupted. Unfortunately instead of showing me something, I only see the Windows 7 blue screen with the leaves and bird. I left it alone for 20 minutes, nothing. So I shut it down and tried again. Same thing.

I've never had any problems and I'm horrible when it comes to computers. I'm using an old Dell and it's horribly slow and ancient. I would really appreciate any help or advice you can give me.

Hi PrioSteel! Try going to Start->Right-Click On Computer->At the left bar click on Device Manager (You may get a UAC Prompt, just accept it) Check if any Devices have an Exclamation Mark on their icon (See ScreenShot) If they do, the device needs drivers.

Hello all. I have a Dell Vostro 400 that will turn on, but will not boot up Windows Vista.
After the boot up screen with all of the options and everything, it says "Boot from CD..." and then just goes to a blank screen. I've tried to change the boot order but to no avail.
Could this be a hard drive failure?

Hi and help!!!!
Reinstalled win7 pro 64bit on a dell vostro 320 using the dell os disk. Put the dell drivers disc in to find it only contained something to do with powersaving.
Tried to connect to internet but Windows Network Diagnostics could not find network adapter drivers.
Could someone advise which basic drivers I require to connect to the net so that I can get the dell site to update the remaining drivers. Device manager says I need the Ethernet driver but I can't find that on the Dell site. How can I tell which software is required (or what I have in my pc)?
All I have is the pc and the two dell discs.
Many thanks.

I have a Dell Vostro 270 desktop which was left on overnight, now it won't come out of low power mode or start up. Purchased in July2013.
I could hold the front power switch in for a few seconds to power down but now the PC wont power up. I press the button (turns white) fan spins but then the power button on the front panel turns off automatically. The PC then just seems to repeat this without user intervention but gets no further.
I did pull the power cord out of the back so that the green light on the psu goes out and then re-inserted the cord several hours later and the PC started again.
However now it won't start again (not tried the power cord removal again yet) any ideas ? Google seems to bring up similar issues but no definitive answers.
Any ideas please ?

A:Dell Vostro 270 won't start up

Have you tried removing all memories and power up the system?? Try with 1 memory at a time.
If the issue is still the same, then either the PSU and/or motherboard is faulty

Can you tell me that which Os is more stable on Vostro 1400 notebook.

A:Which one is best OS for Dell vostro 1400 ???

This usually ships with Vista basic - which is as much use as a chocolate teapot. You can upgrade to vista premium or bite the downgrade bullet and take it to an OS XP Home or PRo that is established with at least 3 service packs. You don't include any specs - so answers may be vague as a result. Give us PC info. and we may be ale to help.

Hello all, My friend has Vista Basic 32 bit. She has a Dell Vostro 400. Well since she added the E machine Monitor she has had to always push F1 to get it to go in start up mode. Well now she says, she has to continually push F1 until it goes into startup mode. So we are not sure what is going on.
It says there is an extra graphic's download or something like that. How do we fix this issue?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

A:Dell Vostro 400 gets stuck on F1 HELP!!

I doubt anyone here will know what you are talking about from your first post (hence why you got no replies in a week), so, additional clearer information will be needed.
Do you mean she plugged in a new LCD monitor, or that she installed some e machine monitoring software?
What is "start up mode"? Why does she have to push F1, what happens if she doesn't push F1?
What "says there is an extra graphic's download or something like that" Do you mean that when you get into windows it tries to install some sort of graphics driver for a new graphics device or something?
Are you able to get into windows?

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 running WinXP Home. No sound. I do get the system beeps; there is no longer a volume icon in the tray. I think I am missing something like the name of the soundcard under "other devices". See picture~It indicates a hardware conflict and I have run that diagnostic with no result. I have downloaded updated drivers.....I have read so many solutions I am thoroughly confused..... So, I purchased a Soundblaster USB sound card, followed the directions to no avail. Then I read :"If you think you have a sound card installed but you don't see it under the Sound, video and game controllers category, expand the Other devices category and check the devices listed there.
Laptops don't usually have sound cards. Instead, they have integrated sound processors, which appear in the same category in Device Manager. If there's a yellow question mark next to the name of the sound card in Device Manager, there might be a problem.
Right-click the name of the sound card, and then click Properties.
Click the General tab, and then look in the Device status box to identify problems with the sound card.
If there's a problem, you might need a new driver for your sound card. For more information, see Step 3: Update drivers." I have done that.

Hi all

I hope someone can help me with my problem. When I turn on the computer I get a black screen that says one or two things:

PXE-E61: Media test failure check cable
PXE-M0F-exiting broadcom PXE Rom.

Operating System not found

or Press F12 and any button

So when I press F12 and enter I get a screen that says Boot menu

Hard drive
USB storage
CD Rom Drive
Removable device
Broad com PXE

I hit hard drive and the computer turns on and operates normally except for internet use. For some reason I cannot connect. I added my network but it still won't work.

Any idea why it won't turn on sometimes and I get the operating system not found message and why when I hit the hard drive button it turns on like normal. I know I need a new adapter as it always say that it is unrecognizable and will not charge battery. I might need a new battery as well. I think I got that message before it stopped signing on normally. It has been a few years I sort of just put this computer to the side and got a new one when it went all wonky.

P.S. my computer knowledge and verbiage is practically nill so try and be as simple as possible.

A:Dell Vostro 1000

PXE-E61: Media test failure check cable
It usually means that at start up it did not find the hard drive, Cd but is trying to boot from the Network card.

Remove the hard drive - check the contacts and then reseat the hard drive.
Check in the Bios and see if the Bios sees the hard drive.
A dead Bios [Cmos] battery can also be the cause.

Can you try booting into Safe Mode. To get into the Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Options Menu". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

This will hopefully bootup into windows with the START menu available amongst other things.

Then I want you to try a Windows System Restore. You did not mention what operating system is running on the Dell laptop. Assuming it is Windows XP try the following:

To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:

I have an old PC (Compaq Presario Desktop 7470 ) that i purchased from a yard sale. I removed the old HD and replaced it with a quantum 30gb at Lct 20 HD that had Windows ME OS on it. I booted the pc and it booted fine except windows booted up in 16 bit color. I shut down and booted again. same thing. i shut down a third time and checked BIOS settings, then set them to default. Now BIOS doesn't recognize the HD or the CD-ROM drive. I have checked all connection, reset BIOS, removed the CMOS battery, I literally have tried everything I can think of to get things going on this old PC, but I am at the end of my rope. I will say that scandisk will recognize the HD and says it is OK. I have also taken the HD out and hooked it up to another PC and it boots up Windows ME just fine. I have also tried every jumper setting on the HD and Cd-rom to no avail and the only drive that shows up in BIOS is the 3.5 floppy drive which will boot up a Windows ME Boot Disk. I don't have a problem installing a fresh OS but want and need the PC to recognize the drives before i can do that correct?
I am ready to pull my hair out!! Can anyone please help me?!!!?

A:HD recognized by scandisk but HD not recognized by BIOS

probably the booting sequence is wrong due to the fact that you told the BIOS to load the preferred defaults. If you have a standard BIOS:

*go to advanced BIOS settings.... your going to see a big list of options .

<< check this picture for visual example>>
*take a look at the first , second and third boot device and change them to:

1- HDD - 0
2- HDD - 1
3- HDD - 2

Alternate them accordingly.

**probably the reason why your pc booted up at 16 bit the first time , may be
because you haven't installed the drivers for your video card yet.

I have a Dell Vostro 3500 laptop PC. It had a partially cracked display so I got a new LCD replacement screen and replaced it. When I tried to turn it on it, it powered on but it didn't boot up and there was no display or light on the screen. Thinking that the new one was not compatible, I tried putting back the old one but this time it couldn't come on as well. Fan spins but nothing happens. I tried doing a power reset and replacing RAM chips but to no avail. Normally when a computer boots, you would have to hold the power button a little longer to shut it down. This used to happen but now it just turns off after you tap on the power button. How would a screen do that to laptop?

Hello all,

I've got a Dell Vostro 1500 Notebook that has the infamous GSOD. I've been reading on this forum and google for the past 3 days about getting rid of it. First, is the 1500 another name for a more popular Dell laptop? I don't see much information about them.

Anyway, I called Dell and they agreed to give me the master password after verifying that it wasn't stolen. After putting my on hold for about 5 minutes, the tech said they could not generate a new password for this model. He said I could remove the CMOS battery to reset it. I had already done this. Instead of going from the POST screen to the GSOD instantly, I could see a message about RTC being corrected. I would think this means the BIOS got reset.

The next thing the Dell tech told me was that there was a jumper to clear the password next to the CMOS battery (this is under the RAM cover). I could not find any jumper. I found out later today that Vostro is also a name used for some desktops, so I'm thinking that maybe he had the wrong service manual out?

Now the laptop is not in my possession and I've been trying to find some higher resolution pics of the mainboard to see if there is this jumper somewhere. I can't seem to find it....

Has anyone ever heard of Dell saying they CANNOT create a new password for this model? I thought that all -595B security was the same. Since I don't have the laptop currently, I cannot try shorting (or even f... Read more

Dear All,

this is my forst post here. I hown, since 2010, a Dell Vostro 3450 and recently upgraded to 8 GB RAM Memory from 6 Gb that were originally installed. The 3 years warranty also recently expired. I started experiencing several problems with the laptop and after talking to soome IT friends they all sugested to wipe everything and reinstaall the OS (Windows 7 Professional SP1). Because my recovery partition didn't work i had to use a different install of the OS (still a Win 7 Pro) and then install all the drivers and SP1. The Laptop is still slow and i have had several (3 only this AM) BSOD possibly all related to the dxgkrnl.sys but unfortunately i cannot locate the minidump folder under C:/windows/ so i cannot be entirely sure oof what is going on. I also went through the post at the following link [SOLVED] BSOD Due to dxgkrnl.sys but in my case replacing the MOBO is not an option at all. When checking the Windows Event Viewer i can see warnings, alerts, "Critical" and so forth all over the places.

I also found in the System Information an extremely long list of errors in the Windows Error Reporting page.

Moreover Windows Update is unable to install the following updates that appear to be important. Every time i restart the laptop the updates are there and fail to install:

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally Sound. In the Sound Playback panel, make sure your speakers are set as the default playback device.

If that is OK, go to the Device Manager and RIGHT click to highlight the entry for the Sound device and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (DO NOT check the block to uninstall the drivers). Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect the sound and reinstall it. This fixes a lot of flakey problems.

Hi guys,

I've come into acquisition of a Vostro 200 that may be decent enough to replace my current HTPC with. It's running the junky 1.6gHz Celeron processor that comes stock with this model, but I'm almost positive I can upgrade it to at least a Core 2 Duo. Can anybody confirm that? It seems a waste to have a newer computer as that go to waste when a simple processor upgrade can make it fairly competitive. I've looked everywhere and can't find the supported processor specs for this Dell CU409 board, but I did find a link from Dell with the recommended upgrades for the computer under my Service Tag.

The service tag = J5LMHD1

Your Bluetooth is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why did you disable it?
Please re-enable it and update it's drivers - then, if you wish, feel free to disable it again.
Only 883 MB of RAM free - please only open 1 application at a time, and disable any unneeded startup items.
Then, please add more RAM (if possible, and if the system will accept more RAM).
The WER section of MSINFO32 shows many network related BSOD's - and few specify the WwanUsbMp64.sys driver, which is related to your Dell Wireless 5550 HSPA+ Mini-Card Network Adapter/Mobile Broadband device.
The driver dates from 2013, so I would suggest updating it in order to see if that will stop the BSOD's.

Thanks for listening. This is my first question posted.

I have back-graded my new Dell A860 to XP (it came with Vista) and need to locate a driver package for audio, etc. My keyboard, mouse, and DVD drive seem to work fine, but I have no audio output for my Power DVD app. I also get an error message when I try to use my WMP. Most other functions seem fine, but I have only typed a few documents in Word and stored images from my flash drive.

I have tried installing the driver & utility disc from my XP package, but get an error message saying the install failed. I assume that I need drivers, but perhaps someone with more experience would be aware of other problems I am missing. I am quite the neophyte regarding this sort of thing.

Also, I do not have this computer online, so I am hoping to download the drivers to another computer and then transfer them over via my flash drive or external hard drive.

Many thanks for any time and consideration you can give to this matter!

i have a dell vostro i bought with a bad harddrive. after replacing the harddrive and installing windows 7 on it, it started to freeze on me after i installed the Nvidia graphics driver.
i searched online and i thought it was an overheating issue. so i downloaded speedfan and the temparature was about 76-84
so i bought new thermal compound and cleaned all the inside of the laptop.
after finishing cleaning and putting new thermal compound
the tempersture dropped to 50-70 it worked fine for about 1 hour, after that it started to freeze again,

then i uninstalled the Nvidia driver and the freezing stopped.
i did a bios update and installed all drivers up-to-date
i am still having the same issue.
the temperature is about 46 and it freezes.
when it freezes i cannot do anything. i can hear the fan speed up,
there are no beeps or lights.

I would suggest that you run the diagnostics on the computer by following the steps mentioned in the video below and check if there is any issue with the hardware on your system.

Also, Dell would not recommend Customer's to replace Field replaceable units as this has to replaced only by a Dell Certified technician.
Please let me know the findings.

Made the network a home network. I don't know what else to do. She is on Windows 7 btw.

If signal strength is full and you're relatively close to the router, then unfortunately this is a quirk noted by others with the Vostro. One possibility is a wireless phone system or other digital interference i.e. cell phones. If power shows fair to weak, then a signal booster works.

Hello there,
I'm about to Upgrade my DELL VOSTRO 5470's 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM. Therefor, I would love to ask a question about RAM. Is it that important to buy necessarily the RAM from dell website which was DELL sticker? For instance, I found another cheaper and seemingly very good and reasonable RAM's from Crucial and This another one entitled "DMS Certified RAM"..
So would those RAM's work fine? are they suitable and fully compatible? or I definitely have the one sole choice to by 95 Euro priced RAM on DELL Website? I think that's pretty expensive..

Thanks a lot!

You don't need to purchase RAM from Dell, but you should ask your vendor about compatibility guarantees (or understand the possible return/restocking fees if they don't offer a guarantee).

# Vostro 430 @ 999$.

Offer seen at for the Vostro 430 @ 999$.

I do intend to play some games on the computer so I was planning on changing the Video Card for an ATI Radeon 4870 I already own and to change the power supply that is currently 350 watts for an OCZ 700 GameXstream that I already own in another computer.. I would also like to plug in 2 monitors on it eventually..

I was wondering if you guys think it is a good deal for me to buy this system from Dell in order to use it as a base system to the changes/plans I described above.. I don't really want to spend more than 1200$ on the system tax included so I figured it was a really good deal with OS included, 8gb 1333mhz ram and the new i7 processor.. What do you guys think? Tell me if you need any other information.

Thank you very much in advance for your time..
Your help is very appreciated..

I've been experiencing this problem for approximately six months on and off.

Intermitently, when I go to attach a USB device (memory stick or ipod) I get the pop up "USB Device Not Recognized."

At this point, nothing I attach will be recognized

In the Device Manager whatever I attach is listed as an Unknown Device.
I check the Properties and get the advice "No drivers are installed for this devices"
I've tried right clicking and Updating the Driver Software but get the response:
"Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date".
I check the Properties again and still get the advice "No drivers are installed for this devices"

I've tried uninstalling the driver and restarting the PC without success.

The only thing Dell could suggest was to uninstall the Family USB Universal Host Controllers in the Device Manager and restart. This works sometimes but after a day or so the problem re occurs.

Usually I have to keep re starting until the PC finally recognizes whatever I'm trying to attach. Sometimes it starts recognizing whatever I'm attaching if i leave it for a while.

I have a Dell Vostro 200 with Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit

Getting intermittent BSOD. Some days nothing and other day a number of crashes.

Dell Vostro 1500 was originally shipped with Vista 32. Did a clean install with Win 7 x64 Professional.

I did run a memory check overnight a few weeks ago and it came up clean.
Appreciate any help - thanks.

Hi candem and welcome to the forum. I looked at your four most recent dumps. They show three different bugcheck codes and blame Windows system drivers, which are highly unlikely to be the real causes. Since no definitive cause is given, you will have to troubleshoot.

1. Begin your troubleshooting by uninstalling Spybot. Tea Timer is loading at startup and it, like many third party security programs, cause conflicts and BSOD on some Win 7 systems. I do not know if Tea Timers is causing a conflict. I suggest you eliminate it as a possibility while you are troubleshooting. Once you know your system is stable, you can try Spybot again. HOwever, I recommend that you install Malwarebytes (free) and run it as an on demand scanner. MBAM works very well with Win 7 and is a good program.

2. Out of date drivers are another big potential source of conflict and BSOD's. You have some outdated drivers loading on your system and some are quite obsolete. Update the following drivers or uninstall the software/hardware they are associated with. Begin by updating netw5v64.sys.

b44amd64.sys Tue Nov 21 07:23:06 2006 - Broadcom NDIS driver. - Downloads & Support. This is an XP driver. If there is no update for it, it means your LAN adapter is obsolete. Upgrade to a new LAN adaper.

Dear friends,
I am using a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. Its about a year old. The laptop has a wireless mini card which can be turned on with the Function key (fn+f2). This was working properly until a few months back, when the computer failed to respond to the fn+f2 command. I had to open Dell's wireless card utility to turn on and off the wifi. I assumed it to be a problem with Dell Quickset as this problem cropped up after I opened dell quickset for the first time and closed it. I re-installed quickset but the same problem persists. Curiously, when I open network connections and disable the wireless connection, the wi-fi light illuminates. No idea why this happens. Can anyone shed light on this issue?

Do they all fit? Is any of this proprietary? There is a Corsair CX 450 for 30 bucks I can pick up will it fit? The noob

A:Need to replace PSU in a Dell Vostro 200 Slimline

They are not proprietary, however they are TFX form factor rather than the standard ATX form factor which severely limits your options. High wattage units are non-existent in this form factor due to size constraints.

Here are some options:
FSP Group FSP300-60GHT 300W = $35
SeaSonic SS-300TFX Bronze 300W = $43

I need a new machine. I was looking at a Dell Inspiron. A friend said that I should get the Optiplex, as it is a much better machine.

The Optiplexes are generally about $250 more than the Inspirons. Is their extra cost justified in that they will hold up/last longer? I also saw there are Vostro models - their prices fall somewhere in between.,

This is for home use: Internet searching activity (no games!) with occasional downloads, playing MP4 files and general usage.

From another post here I learned that I am best staying with Intel processors.

Any suggestions/recommendations on Dell models will be appreciated.

Thank you

I have a Dell Vostro 460 running Windows 7 Home Premium x64. The processor is a Core i5-2500.
I have been getting BSOD's for a while now. They occur randomly during regular different times with different programs.

After the BSOD's started happening I tested all the memory with Memtest for a minimum of 10 passes per stick (4x2GB). This was the RAM that shipped with the computer from the OEM. The results showed that the RAM was fine. I tested each stick individually in different slots.

I cloned the hard-drive to a new identical hard-drive and the issue still happened. I uninstalled/removed any extra programs, including AV software etc. I ran SFC which did not find any issues with the system.
I even ran checkdisk which didn't make a difference either.

I ended up doing a clean install of the operating system on the new harddrive, and things seemed to be good for a few days, but lo and behold, the problem still wasn't gone.

Every .DMP file that I have opened always mentions ntkrnlmp.exe under IMAGE_NAME:

After reinstalling I forgot to change my settings, so every .DMP file over-wrote the previous one.

This system is of course just a few months outside of warranty as well..
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Go down to the section called "Sound, video, and game controllers" and collapse the section. Either take a screenshot of that section or type in what devices are listed in that section.

Hello All,

My question is this, I have a Dell Vostro 200 with a Foxconn G33M02 mobo and I need to replace it. I don't want to pay Dell's price but am wondering if there is an equivalent that would fit in the case. The price range I am looking for is under $100 and I don't need all the frills just a compatible mobo that will support the stock processor, supports 4 RAM slots and has the front USB ports like the current one. Any suggestions?

I really need help on this please.

A:Solved: Dell Vostro 200 needs new mobo

It looks like you want a micro ATX board (9.6 inches square) with these specs (or something close to it):

Intel® Core™2 Quad, Core™2 Duo, Pentium® Dual-Core, Pentium® D, Pentium® 4, Celeron® processors , Socket T (LGA775)
Supports Intel® next generation 45nm Multi-Core processors , Socket T (LGA775)
1333 / 1066 / 800 MHz (FSB)
Dual Channel DDR2 800 / 667 x 4 DIMMs, Max 8GB
1 x PCIe x16, 1 x PCIe x1, 2 x PCI
ATA x1, SATAII x 4
7.1 channel HD Audio
12 x USB 2.0 ports

This one from is close, and is $3 under budget:

Edit: One minor concern... does the Dell computer have a replaceable rear panel (I/O shield) where the connectors are located?

So I've tried almost everything I could find online to fix this problem with no success so far. I decided to give it a go here before resorting to drastic measures (like reinstalling Windows.)

So here's my situation:

I'm using a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop with Windows XP, and I bought it new about 6-months ago. I've primarily used it for schoolwork, listening to music, and watching the occasional movie - but as of yesterday my sound no longer works. Yesterday afternoon I was listening to music on iTunes using my headphones and then I closed my laptop, and the next time I opened it (a few hours later) I couldn't hear any sound at all from the internal speakers. I couldn't hear the Windows startup sound, Youtube videos, iTunes music... I then put in the headphones and I could only hear sound coming from the left ear. I tried another pair and it had the same problem.

I used the start-up diagnostics to test the sound card, and I found that the built-in speakers do indeed work, although sound would still only come out of the left ear of the headphones. I loaded Windows again and there was still no sound. I checked device manager to make sure there were no conflicts and there were none - in fact, I've gone through almost every troubleshooter I can find and still no sound. I haven't made any major installations in the past several months and am rather baffled as to why this is happening all of the sudden.

Any suggestions?

A:No sound on Dell Vostro laptop

Hi and welcome. You could try to remove the sound card in device manager and allow windows to put it back. Other than that, it should still be under warranty? so, I would suggest a call to Dell.

We have a Dell Vostro 220 which is having problems powering up. It began intermittently but now it very rarely powers up.
The green light on the back where the power cable goes in is lit.
When I push the power switch, it blinks amber once. Then both fans start, but stop after a second. Then they both start again, for less than one second. The power switch blinks amber once more. Then nothing. In the past we could try again and it would start, then it got worse and we would need to repeat 10 or 20 times to get it to work. Now it seems we could try all day and it would never start.
I opened it up. Disconnected and re-connected everything and tried again - it worked fine. But next day it wouldn't power up again. So I opened up and again, and this time I changed the CMOS battery. I power it up 3 times in a row and it worked fine, and the user used it for the rest of the day.
However, this morning, it refused to start up again. Same problem as before.
Is there anything else I could try ?
Thanks very much,

How long should it take to install SP2 on a Dell Vostro 1510? I have attempted a clean install of Vista SP1 and cant get wireless drivers or updates to install. I shut it down and and its started installing an update (SP2 is the only one I tried to download) Its been "installing" at least an hour now. 15 meg cable internet. I get the feeling the install is failing.
This morning it BSODed once when I googled wireless drivers. Then the install wizard froze trying to install the driver. Error code 40.
I am ready say screw it and put XP on this thing.

I have been experiencing an increase in BSOD's over the last month. From the minidump file, it seems I was averaging about 2 per month, but it has gone up fast this month. I upgraded to Windows 7 in late November of '09, with a clean install of the 64 bit version. I upgraded all my drivers at that time.

The crash errors I see at the time of the BSOD make me think I have driver problems, but I have recently discovered that Dell does not provide support for Win 7, OR 64 bit operating systems in this model. I think I have all 32 bit Vista drivers.

I have attached the minidumps, and a .txt file of a new CPUZ report in case that would be informative. I hope you can tell me what the problem is, and how I can find the proper drivers.

For some reason, the .txt file would not attach, here it is in zip.

This is my first post here, but I hope someone can help me out.

I recently bought a new Dell Vostro 430 desktop, with the following configuration:

Processor: Intel Core i 860
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Hard Disks: 500GB SATA internal, 1TB USB external
Video: ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series
Audio: Realtek HD audio

I've been having lots of problems with BSOD crashes and the system hanging. At one point, it was BSODing several times a day. It appears to be intermittent, not at set times of day or regular intervals, or during specific activities.

I've also had the USB controller "freeze", killing the mouse, keyboard and external hard disk. Sometimes, plugging the mouse and keyboard into the front USB ports makes them start working again, but not always.

I did have Server 2008 R2 installed to use Hyper-V, but suffered so many BSOD crashes that I replaced it with Windows 7 to see if that helped, which it hasn't.

I suspect it must be something to do drivers for something. All devices in device manager appear to be OK, with the exception of "PCI Simple Communications Controller", which has no driver installed (and I can't find one), and which I have disabled to see if that helps (it hasn't)

I've attached a set of minidump files that cover several BSOD events.

I'd really appreciate if someone could take a look and point me in the right direction.

i have a dell vostro a860. it starts, goes by bios, and then restarts forever. it doesnt pass to hdd in order to load windows 7.
i run the diagnostics utility. i get error 0146.
i was able to start my laptop using hiren\s boot cd. i run chkdsk on my hdd - everything is fine. all my files are in order. i scanned with malwarebytes - all clean.

i believe that at startup, my laptop does check my hardware. due to a possible power loss, there is that error stored and that makes it loop restart.

how do i delete that error ? my diagnostics are pretty simple and wont let me delete the error - no such option. no options at all, only auto diagnostics.

A:dell vostro 860 loop restart

This document goes over the diagnostics error codes and discusses codes ending with 0146. The paper instructs that resetting the BIOS to defaults can clear the error. Enter the BIOS (start the system tapping F12 and choose diagnostics) Choose maintenance, load defaults press enter, highlight continue and press enter. press escape and choose exit and press enter.
If the problem continues you are likely looking at a fault with the HDD. Please let me know what you find out.
