system configuration utilities

Q: system configuration utilities

After having trouble accessing the internet, I determined to examine everything. Accidently disabled my pc with system configuration utility. Can get into pc in F8 only. Don't know where to go next. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A: system configuration utilities

Hi Kitsy and welcome to the forum!

Is the system configuration utility that you are referring to accessed by typing start - run then typing msconfig in the run box?

Will the system boot safe mode when you press F8 on startup?

Have you tried last known good configuration from the startup menu?

Hi, I was hoping someone could tell me how I can print or copy then paste the list of start up programs in my system configuration utilities?
I have a lot of things in there that are not needed but I need to compare it to a start up list. It would be much easier if I could print it.
Thanks

Hi,
I apologize if this is not the right section, this seemed to be the most suitable.
I am using a 3D Connexion mouse and when I try to execute an executable file for the software configuration, I get the following error?
"Exception: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Configuration.Internal.ConfigurationManagerInternal' to type 'System.Configuration.Internal.IConfigSystem'"
I've talked with the mouse vendor and they have no idea.  My OS is Win7 64.  Does anybody know what this is?

I'm a foreign student.I found a wonderfull software is looking for affiliates. it's name is "Wopti Utilities" which like a combination of Everest and Tunup with a low price. And i'm going to sell it to my classmates and friends. But i'm not sure whether it is valuable. And you can use its whole functions after 30-day trial with a little bit difficulty, that's make me a headache.
Could you give me some suggestions?
thx

A:about system utilities

I've just done a quick search of the program.

The 30 day trail is exactly that, a 30 day trail. You can not continue to use it after the 30 days have expired.

Are you going to buy 1 copy of the program and sell it to your colleagues? Cause that's not entirely legal in general cases, although I haven't read their licence and agreement.

I know something is still wrong! I have defragmented and I have run Disk Cleanup, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and AVG - I also have Spyware Guard installed and use the Windows Firewall. (I DO run and update my utilities religiously) However, my computer is still running/loading slowly. At times, I feel as if something is running because I see the little light flickering - and this is when I am just reading or on Yahoo. When I bring up the Task Manager, I see nothing unusual under "Processes" or "Applications" - what can it be? Could it be an update that I'm not aware of, like Windows? Should I run a HJT log? Help! (P.S. I connect to the Internet through a Comcast cable connection. I use Firefox for my browser, and have WOT and Finjan as additional warning systems. I am not a careless surfer, and try to check sites first through McAfee's SiteAdvisor.com - but, of course, I'm not perfect!)

Folks,

I am running Vista (32-bit) and I am looking for some software to help keep things running smoothly. System Mechanic and TuneUp Utilities 2008 are two products that I have looked into. This sight has a nice list of free software that might do the job too.

The bottom line is that I don't mind spending money on a product if it is a better product. What are your opinions on the two products I mentioned above? Do you like something better? Should I stick with the free stuff?

All input is appreciated!

Thank you,

Scott

I bought, downloaded and installed WinZip System Utilities Suite a few days before last Christmas.
The program promptly crashed my graphics driver, rendering the computer unusable. Fortunately my computer man was able to fix the problem quickly (by ?manually uninstalling? the old driver and then installing a new one), albeit at a cost three times that of the program.
I wrote to WinZip via their web help service and asked for their comments. I half-expected them to deny any possibility of their program?s having caused the problem, although a more honourable response would have been to seek to provide a remedy with an assurance that the problem could not recur - but in the event I?ve had no reply at all.
I?d be grateful for any helpful comments Tech Forum could be provide. The program?s list of features looks impressive, but I?m not game to run it again.

These types of programs very often do more harm than good. My best advice is to stay away from these types of utilities and use proven, safe software if you're having an issue with your PC.

what is the best PC System Utilities Software for windows 7, like for defrag, cleaning registry......

A:PC System Utilities Software

You will likely get a bunch of opinions.

The most common opinion would probably be to use only Windows built-in tools. They work well.

You'll hear good things about CCleaner, a free download that is very widely recommended. It has multiple components including a general cleaner and a registry cleaner.
Defrag tools are largely personal preference, based on the degree of your obsessiveness rather than measurable differences in performance.

Likewise, registry cleaners are generally frowned on. But if you can't help yourself and just HAVE TO clean the registry, use CCleaner and accept its offer to backup before you run the cleaner.

You probably won't hear many good comments about the packaged retail "all-in-one" utility suites you have to pay for at Best Buy, Newegg, etc.

There's one or two tools that are actively disliked because they are difficult to get rid of and like to "phone home" against your wishes. Can't remember the names of them.

A:PC System Utilities Software Review

Hi George "PC Booster/Tune Up" programs are part of the worst programs you can install on a system. When it comes to messing up your system (Windows), these are as worst as malware. They are completely worthless and useless to use. The worst is that they'll often take action on your system without you knowing, nor authorizing it, which could lead to your system being altered in a way you don't want it to be or even worst, a "broke" system. Every feature they provide, you can either do it natively under Windows, do it via another standalone executable (which is way easier and safer to use) or they aren't providing something you need. Here's a few examples:Cleaning temporary files: TFC (standalone executable), CCleaner (installed), Cleanmgr.exe (in-built);Managing start-up entries: Autoruns (standalone executable), CCleaner (installed), Task Manager and Registry (in-built);Driver Updater: Not needed, all you need is to go on your manufacturer website so you'll be sure to get the right, official, working drivers for your computer or hardware;Registry Cleaner/Defragger: Completely useless and also dangerous;Disk Defragging: Disk Defrag (in-built), O&O Disk Defrag (installed), Defraggler (installed);Powerful uninstaller: Not needed, only needed when you have to make sure a program is completely uninstalled. Revo Uninstaller have a portable version you can use;"Enhanced" Task Manager: Procexp (standalone executable), Process Hacker (portable or installed);"Active security": Any... Read more

A:Solved: System Utilities has stopped working

Hello,

Does it have any more info on the popup?

Follow this link http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_vista.html
Follow down from the top of that site, reading carefully.

You may see something listed as "System Utilities" you could just take the tick out of that. However, its not always as obvious as that.

The only one I would leave ticked is your Anti-Virus - it should be pretty obvious by its name.

That should rectify it.

Come back to me and let me know?

It's not immediately clear what this is for. It isn't just for upgrading to a new o/s .

It has lots of other useful functions.

It consists of Partition Manager (personal edition ), and the Virtualization manager.

Even if you already have the partition manager, it is worth the download for the Virtualization manager.
That includes the Boot Corrector to resolve most common boot problems,
and P2P Adjust Recover the OS startup ability after system migration to a different hardware platform.

Also, unusually for GOTD downloads, Paragon normally let you keep the installer , so as long as you keep a copy of the product key - you can reinstall the product as often as you like.

Norton [Symantec] programs have a bad reputation for causing problems. I would go with "TU," of which I have an old version that has worked fine and caused no complications.

What are those "masses of icons" in your task bar? You could probably stop most or ALL of them. 44 does sound like a lot of useless garbage. I have Ultimate, and I only have 23 items to check or uncheck in start up, of that i think i have around 18 or 19 checked. The only thing made by Windows or Microsoft in my Start-up menu (in sys config) is Media player, and I have it turned off.

In System configuration in the "services" tab, I have so much stuff "running". I want to know which ones I really need running and which ones I can stop?

A:System Configuration

When going into "msconfig" from the run minu you can click on the "startup" tab and disable all without any problems. This will quicken your boot time. The system config is one you will have to do a Google search in order to find the programs you can and cannot remove, it is time consuming, but in order to do it wright that is what you are going to have to do if YOU plan on removing any of the programs yourself. You may find a link that has a list of programs you can remove, but depending on your system you still have to research before shuting down a program. Sorry, but there is no real easy way to do this, at least That is what I found myself doing.
PS, Do a google search for (programs to remove in sys. config), see what happens.

He asked how? I said I don't know exactly it just what I'd heard and then just this week a post on the Microsoft community site alluded to this very subject and it said that using Sysyem Configuration unless you know what your doing can even render your PC inoperable and suggested you access it through Contana for eg rather than directly from your system. It said type msconfig in search box (my stuff) and accessing it from here is a safer way. I accessed it by this method and it launched the same box as if you'd accessed it direct, my point is whats the difference as unlike my nephew  there are masses of things I don't know, and is it true?

How to:
Configure a single application such as regedit to bypass UAC during launch whilst keeping UAC on.Creating a static entry in
Code:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-X\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AccountPicture

String Value:

Reg_SZ: Display Name: X

so windows does not show your* email address* on the* logon* screen*. Works till logon then you see your "test" revert back to your email address*.Where/what are the files/dependencies to run metro. Mostly interested where the data is stored to indicate the metro UI to minimize upon switch to desktop and where the image files are stored for the backdrop (similar to the web folder, not sure if they use a .dll or res file instead based on the set list provided by default).

Thanks in advance for the assistance, I've been slowly but surely rewriting the registry and system files however wasn't quite sure about a couple things after a solid 6 hours of work.

The thing that most concerns me is the RAM i have 6GB and as you can see ive managed 1.1 ratio by underclocking ram to 701mhz. is the 1.1 ratio worth the underclock? Are the timings the best they can be? win 7 index rated my ram at 6.8 that ent good i dont think.

Even thou i got 6GB ram it still running in dual channel mode, symmetric which alot of people telling me it cant be done!

could some1 look over the info i have given and tell if what i have done is best or can be improved.

I am planning to overclock further once i replace my PSU, and run my e5200 at 4025mhz with fsb 350x11.5, what should i put my ram too then?

I am having issues with my computer. My computers OS is Windows Media Center. And the brand of the computer is Gateway. I was having issues with my computer rebooting: like if i would try to shut it down the computer would not respond. So i looked under help and support and it told me to go to "msconfig" and uncheck one of the boxes there. So it told me to uncheck the "Load Services" box. A:System Configuration Issues

Well you have lost your system restore points if you disabled all the Microsoft services.

In using msconfig, when disabling services, you first HIDE all the Microsoft services.

You should not look like your are in Safe Mode if all previously checked boxes are now checked. If you are, then there is a problem with your display adapter settings. Make sure you are using the same screen resolution and color depth as before.

To check that, right click on the desktop and select Properties > Settings. Typical settings are 1024x768 and 16 or 32 bit color depth.

You can still troubleshoot by using msconfig -- just follow these directions:

CLEAN BOOT TROUBLESHOOTING technique XP

First, restart in Safe Mode if necessary -- (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu) or Normal mode

Then:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 << for Vista, but applies equally to XP, and better written.

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

When I bootup the message reads "Invalid system configuration" - run configuration utilty, press 1 to resume or f2 to enter setup. Pressing 1 takes you into windows. Everything is fine except I can't dial out.Larry I read your advice in the archives. It helped now I can dial out. However the Invalid system configuration message still appears when I bootup.Any suggestions?

A:Invalid system configuration

This can mean a few things. There is a resource conflict of some sort, but the exact sort...

Press F2 to enter setup. Many systems will pop a message up right there telling you what is wrong.

There isn't another message is there? Like 3F8 resource conflict, invalid configuration, press F2?

You said you couldn't dial - so, in Windows Device Manager check what IO and IRQ your Modem and COM ports are set to. When you go into setup with F2 make sure none of the COM ports in there are set to the same numbers.

I cannot use the system configuration utility in Vista. It has quit functioning. I have tried opening it through the Run function and through Control Panel/Admin Tools. Is there any way to reinstall or repair it? I originally had Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled by Dell. I then purchased a downloadable version of Vista Ultimate, so I am running Ultimate. I then migrated my volumes to RAID using the intel matrix storage control. I have tried to reinstall Vista through boot but can't seem to do this. And now when I try to open my homepage it freezes. I have had other programs freeze the system. Any suggestions including reverting to XP would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Method1 ) OS Boot Information
Try checking the box next to "OS boot information
You may have to close then re-launch msconfig for it to take outcome
Reboot your system now and see
Method 2) System File Checker
You should run System File Checker scan
Below is the command for System File Checker
Launch Command prompt
Type “sfsc /scannow”
Hit Enter.

Guys,

I have finally come up with this after reading through lots of reviews:

Intel I7-920, 2.66GHz, 8MB Cache, 4.8GT/s Processor
MSI X58 Pro E Motherboard

3*2GB DDR3 Kingston or 2*2GB - Please advice which is better. Would 2*2GB suffice? If so I can save some money there since DDR3 is costly.

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5850

1TB Seagate SATA Hard drive

Samsung 22X DVD RW

Samsung P2350 24" LCD Monitor (Lavender Series)

Logitech Keyboard and mouse

PSU - Zebronics 800W Platinum - This proves to be a tad costlier. For the configuration above please let me know what wattage would do the trick.

Please let me know any improvements. Also I would use this to play games like COD 4, Far Cry 2 etc., I do plan to overclock my system. If you think some can be reduced to save some bucks please let me know that as well.

A:Final System Configuration

Nah, I actually completely disagree.

Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80605I5750 - Retail

If I check the box will the changes be accepted? Will this message appear every time I start?

The changes have already been made. This is just a warning. As the label on the checkbox says, if checked it will not appear on next startup.

The fact that msconfig won't stay open is a classic sympton of spyware. When that happens you can't usually access regedit.exe from Run or your Internet Options from the Tools menu in IE.

How can I configure W7's S P to leave user files [ not only "my docs", but <user>\app data . . . . , favorites, desktop ]?

I used W7's System Protection on my W7 Pro, 32 bit system, to return to a restore point I had made before installing a program, but it either modified or deleted files modified or created after the restore point was made, after uninstalling the program and returning to the manually created restore point.

A:System Configuration utility

I just (today) overcame this...I'm not sure at all how it happened or what may have caused it, so I can't really be of much help.

My situation started a couple of days ago when I suddenly had these messages at startup which referred to files which could not be found. I used a combination of Autoruns, msconfig, and regedit...to track down and manually delete any/all references to these two files. My system now boots up normally .

So...I can't tell you what it was or how it happened but I can say that deleting any/all registry and file references took care of it on my system.

I don't think it was malware of any sort, but I'm no expert at determining such.

Hello Cola,

See if typing msconfig in the Start Menu search box and press enter to have it open.

You can also add a shorcut of the program that you want to run at startup in the Startup folder in the Start Menu for this. See OPTION ONE in the tutorial below for more on this.

Hope this helps,

I believe you can't run this utility unless you are the ADMIN. Make USER accounts for the kids. They can't access MSCONFIG. But then, if they know the process name of the program, then Ctrl+Alt+Del may allow them to end it anyway. Might be a 3rd party software that can do what you want.

A:System Configuration Utility

MCI has to do with communications devices and I believe multi-media as well.

since is has the ".BAK" that would give the impression that it was backed up brolly due to some system changes.

Uncheck it, reboot the system and test your functionality. *IF* things still work, you should be able to safely remove it.
Good Luck!

In XP Home I have some programs that open at bootup that I don't want anymore. I went into the System configuration utility program and clicked on the Startup tab. I unchecked quite a few of them and then rebooted and it worked, they don't appear at bootup anymore, but they are still in the Startup program in the system configuration utility program. I tried highlighting and then right clicking to click on delete but it gives no option to delete them. How can I get them out of the Starup folder?
Thanks, Jim

I have XP, IE6, and M Office 2003.

I do run>MSconfig and msconfig comes up. I deselect several programs in the startup and services tabs and exit, so the window comes up saying I have to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. I click restart and the computer reboots. On my desktop comes a window about the System Configuration Utility and how some things have changed. A large section of the window is missing, so that the extreme bottom end of the window is a checkable box that says "Do not show this message again" which I select. However, this System Configuration Utility window pops up every time I boot up my computer. But when I put the computer back in normal mode, the window doesn't pop up on reboots. What's going on?

I didn't see a "combined" or "system" thread so hopefully I've chosen the correct place for this post. If not, please point me to the correct one.

I recently built a new machine and am disappointed in it's performance as compared to my current one. I did a lot of reading before I decided on the particular components in an effort to make the best decisions. I figured if there was a place to find out if I had something mis-configured or get other tips this would be it. Or course Windows boots pretty quick on the new one; that's about the only real improvement I've seen so far though. I know that even though it has 6 cores, the 9010T is a tad slower than the 965 but I'm confident I can increase its speed once I have things running well at defaults.

I don't use either for games. Mostly for Photoshop, Premier (and other video programs) and typical day to day desktop activities. The other day I encoded 4 videos (about 45 min each) on both machines at the same time (each having their own source files to work with) and was very surprised that the old machine did the job 3 minutes and change quicker than the new one. Same software on both. While the machines worked I used Resource Monitor just to get a feel for how things were being used. The SSD on the new machine seems incredibly slow as does the overall performance of the machine. I've done various types of reads / writes using large and small files; none of which im... Read more

Frequently, systems are lack-luster due to too many programs running OR autoupdates.

reduce the system services to only what is necessary
stop all those autoupdate programs
remove the startup applications from your user id profile
3) is easy to find
\users\all users\start menu\programs\startups
also look in yourLoginID {ie substituted it for all users above}
Everything in these folders get started when you logon - - "Do you really need it?"

2) can be found unsing the Taskmgr and look at the names. Once you get a list of these,
you can use Spybot Search & Distroy to stop them.

1) is more complex and needs to be done with care, but is very productive.
Many System Services are not necessary even though MS marks them as autostart.
The correction is to change autostart to manual and the nice part is, they can start if requested. To prohibit starting, change to disable.

System Services are accessed by using run services.msc and you need admin privs.

I'll expand on (1-2) with your follow-up ---

Hi Everyone,

Can you tell me if everything is okay here? I ask myself how can the Office Source Engine show stopped when it is checked?

Anyway, I would like to know how I can get rid of the STI Simulator which is an old entry that was left behind when I removed the software of my old webcam! Do you have an idea how I might be able to do so?

Thank you

A:System Configuration utility

Go into the Services and enable it

I think I provided you with this information in another thread

Quote:

OSE.EXE is part of Microsoft Office software.
OSE.EXE is the system service called OFFICE SOURCE ENGINE.
OFFICE SOURCE ENGINE is required for reinstal, or install an "on demand" feature in Microsoft Office 2000/2003.
Required for using Microsoft Office.

STI Simulator is going to have to be removed via the Registry

Msconfig is mainly used for testing purposes. To permenantly remove/disable startup entries, I recommend Autoruns:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb963902.aspx

I recommend you install malwarebytes anti exploit for added protection. Also adding Zemana Anti malware is another great scanner with malwarebytes.

After going to MSConfig, switching the BOOT.INI tab to Safe Mode and rebooting. I then ran Hijack, checked and fixed 04-Global Startup:Winlogon.exe. Then I went back to MSConfig, unchecked Safe Mode and attempted to reboot again. Now I get the following message:

System Configuration Utility
You have used the system config util. to make changes to the way windows starts. This system config util is currently in Diagnostic or Selective start up mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts, choose the normal start up mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes you made using the system config util.

When other users try to log on they get the following:

System Configuration Utility
An access denied error was created while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the selected changes.

In the System Configuration Utility "General Tab" it ask to select either the original Boot.INI or the Modified Boot.INI

How do I get all this back to normal without undoing the changes I made to get rid of the trojan?

When I boot up in XP it is in selective startup and when I switch to normal startup I get all the programs I deleted in my start up system tray. This is like a seesaw, is there anyway I can select normal start up and delete the programs from my system tray at the same time, this is driving me crazy.
Another ? is when I was using ME there was a great password reminder program, does this exist in XP, If not is there any good programs other than Gator(YUCK), any suggestions much appreciated, thanks, Neesh

I went into system configuration(control panel\system and security\administrative tools\system configuration)to get into safe mode. In the General Tab I selected diagnostic startup (it was on selective startup), I then got called away from my laptop and found I couldn't open system configuration to change it back to selective startup. I now get this error window User Account Control - Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer. Is there another way I can change the startup so I am not in a diagnostic startup please.

A:can't open system configuration tab

Was the reason you went into safe mode because you thought you might have a virus? If so, you may want to consider running a portable scanner to see if anything is present. Do you know the name of the program trying to initiate changes?

SuperAntiSpyware makes a portable scanner.

SUPERAntiSpyware - SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner

Please note : The scanner is saved under a random filename so that malware infections won't block its execution.

These tutorials on safe mode also have some advice on how to change back to normal.

Quick question. When I go into system configuration into the 'Startup' tab, it shows programs that are not on my computer anymore (at least I think). Is there anyway to get rid of these? I follow the file link and can't find them so I believe they are removed. Just wondering how to delete them from the Startup tab.

A:System Configuration question.

Open registry editor and browse to HKLM>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Curent Version>explorer>Run. Delete this Run key.

Method Three in OPTION TWO.
