Recently had a virus infection and noticed that the windows firewall service is missing. When trying to reset to recommended settings by using control panel received error code 0x80070424. Cannot access other computers or shared files/folders on home network. Saw a previous post dated 12-17 that appears to be the same problem.

Hey BC community,Note: I have never had a problem like this before, it has just started this week.I play maplestory, and this program detected something wrong with my firewall. So I proceeded to my security settings and attempted to edit my firewall settings: turn it on/off and then this error code popped up:So I tried to edit the other settings and the same error code came up each time. After that came up SEVERAL TIMES, I went to a microsoft and other forums to search for help. They told me to go to this window:And said to go to: Windows firewall and do something with it...but it's not there to do anything to? I really have NO IDEA what to do! It isn't effecting me that much, but when i start my Maplestory file up to reinstall it, it closes and it says this:[04/08 01:54:15] Install Start[04/08 01:54:16] User Temp Directory : C:\Users\Devin\AppData\Local\Temp[04/08 01:54:16] Use CRC : false[04/08 01:54:16] File Name : C:\Users\Devin\Desktop\MSSetupv108.exe[04/08 01:54:16] Game Code : 33563155[04/08 01:54:16] Cannot Regitster Firewall(C:\ProgramData\NexonUS\NGM\NGM.exe,Nexon Game Manager)[04/08 01:54:16] ErrCode : 14000 - 404 - 0[04/08 01:54:17] Install Path : C:\Nexon\MapleStoryI have downloaded microsoft anti virus things and they "cleaned up" my computer, but it still hasn't changed anything. Welcome to the WSF, Junyahh!

Please use the following diagnostic tool. It has a powerful detection mechanism, and may help us get to the cause of your issues:

Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool.
Download: Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Download
Select the version that applies to your system.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double-click the downloaded file to run it.

When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
At the program's console, press the Scan button.

When done, the tool produces a log, FRST.txt, in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

Also, use the Farbar Service Scanner
Download: Downloading Farbar Service Scanner

Let's get a view of all services and dependencies scoped by the tool...
Make sure the following options are checked:

Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender

Press: Scan

When done, FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.

Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

Thank you.

Mod Edit: Moved from Win8 to the Am I Infected forum ~~boopmeI randomly decided to look at McAfee and check my settings, etc. When looking at the main screen, everything states its on and green. I had the most current definitions loaded. When I checked my McAfee firewall it stated on. When I clicked to go into the McAfee firewall, the screen then changed and said it was off. When clicking the Turn On button, it would immediately shut off. I searched this issue and the blogs stated to look at the Windows Firewall under Services. When I checked, it was not there. I did a Windows Search for it and found it. When it opens it gives tells me I need to Update the Firewall Settings. When I click on Use Recommended Settings it gives me an error "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error Code 0x8007042c." I've checked out some of the blog discussions and followed a few thread about creating new register.bat files and running them. I've also tried merging some .dll files also per the bloggers. After doing these actions, the Windows Firewall now appears in my Services but when I click to start it I get the error "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall Service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start"

So my laptop has a bunch of problems. It started out as a virus infection then I found out more problems.

First of all, thank you to Broni for directing me to the thread that tells me to run DSS.

I can't run a systems restore. I get the 0x800700B7 error. As well, Systems Restore says that I've never had a Systems Restore done before, which I think is odd, because I recall seeing Systems Restores created last time I checked (maybe a year ago?)

I also can't turn on Windows Firewall. I get the "Windows can't start the Mpssvc" message.

Hi,

I've installed a program on a WinXP SP2 computer and I need to open a specific port in the firewall to allow the program to work. However, when I go to open/change the firewall settings via Control Panel --> windows firewall and click on it, I get a "firewall has encountered a problem" error (this is not the exact message as the computer is in a foreign language so this was the basic message as told to me by the interpreter). The firewall status is currently "ON" and I have no intentions to turn it off however I really need this port to be opened. Is there anyway I can open a port without going through this method? or does anyone know a possible cause for this?? any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Steve,

First, Windows Firewall is an inbound firewall only. So, if any nasty gets onto your system while the port is open, you won't be notified of any outbound connection attempts on behalf of the nasty.

I would download ZoneAlarm Free or Sygate Personal Firewall (free for personal use at home) and turn off Windows Firewall after installing either of the above. The benefit of doing so will get you outbound notifications and stealth your ports which you can test at http://scan.sygate.com

The most import capabilities of a firewall (there are more) are to:
1) stealth all of your ports
2) notify you to Allow or Deny outbound connection attempts
3) not respond or port forward any i... Read more

I'm having a problem with getting Windows Firewall/ICS service to start. I keep getting the same error

Error 10050: A socket operation encountered a dead network

I looked it up and found that it could happen because of malware or spyware so I've run malware bytes and superantispyware to the point where they both return with nothing. I've also run avast antivirus to see if that came up with anything and so far I've gotten nowhere.

I've used tdsskiller to take out any rootkits and used winsockfix to try and get it working again and nothing has worked.

I've even reinstalled TCP/IP protocol which was mentioned somewhere.

I'm not sure what else to do.

I can't connect to the internet either via wireless or wired though I can on another computer on the same network.

Are there any other suggestions for me?

thanks

A:Windows Firewall/ICS error

The statement "failure of the network system...the network interface...or the network itself" seems to sum it up .

It's either Windows, the NIC, or thje network and I would go about systematically checking/eliminating each...if I wanted to resolve it.

The fact that other users on the network don't experience problems...saves you the trouble of checking the network. Uninstalling/then reinstalling the NIC gives the best chance of success with that one...since NICs do go bad, I always have a spare that I can use for troubleshooting. If I suspect Windows, I run sfc /scannow and set the network up anew on that system, using the NetworkWizard.

After removing malware from my computer, I am unable to start my windows firewall(the malware disabled and broke it, it seems). I get the error code 0x8007042c when trying to start it via Control Panel, and a separate error when trying to start the service via Services; something about not having the dependencies. I have been getting various remote access requests from an IP in netherlands, connected to port 80, and I'm afraid it's a hack attempt. My ESET NOD32 blocks it, but I'm still very cautious, and therefore I've temporarily disconnected my internet. I would really appreciate some help, as I have a VoIP meeting in a couple of days, and will not be able to get to it if I don't solve this issue.

I can't enable Windows' firewall. An error message pops up. The laptop freezes after minutes of use, and a BSOD has appeared a few times with the error 0x0000007A.

I can't install Windows Security Essentials--an error message always comes up. I can install programs like Malwarebytes, but they hang during the scan. I'd appreciate any help.

I am having a problem with Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

I have been doing a lot of online searching and also reviewed the messages in this forum. When I try to start the Windows Firewall from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Windows Firewall/ICS, I get an Error 2 the System cannot find the specified file (but I don't know which file it is specifying)

I am working on this system for a friend and the Wireless Network shows Connected, but when I open a browser, I get the error Server Not Found - so obviously, it is not connected to the Internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good evening, one and all. This is my first thread on BleepingComputer, but I've been aware (and quite fond of) the site for a while now. I got some useful advice back in the day when I had a particularly nasty virus and had no idea what I was doing, though unfortunately it was so out of hand that nothing could save it besides having my uncle wipe the whole thing. I... have encountered another stickler of a virus, though, and instead of hashing it out on my own I finally decided to make a plea for help. Because I seriously have no idea what to do. And for the record, the virus is on an Acer laptop running Windows 7.Alright... so it all started last night when I noticed that my Windows Firewall was down. I don't know how long it had been down, but whatever the case, I tried to turn it back on. It was then that I received "error code 0x8007042c". It offered for me to turn it on manually, which I tried, but with no success. It was around now that AVG notified me of a few viruses. I got rid of them and then updated Malwarebytes and ran a scan. It caught several more, which I deleted. They were of many different breeds, but I was able to delete all of them.So I tried the firewall again. No success. I went online and found this thread:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/error-code-0x80070422-cant-turn-on-firewall/e5ee6823-98f8-4575-a254-00a038b17e34I tried almost everything there, but again... no success. Hello Forum,This is my first post for help and have tried to follow the guides in posting. Hope I have achieved that by sticking to one problem, one post and omitting my two months of virus troubles! Please let me know if anyone needs this info, as I'm pretty sure that it is relevant to this specific problem. Thanks in advance. Details of problem are below:Windows XP Professional SP3Wireless RouterError when trying to initialize windows firewall:Windows firewall settings can not be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?Yes/No? - Yes clicked and error received:Windows can not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.I have scanned PC with SuperAntiSpayware with default settings and result is clean. However, there is a problem which I presume is related:SuperAntiSpayware Update error:There was an error trying to receive definitions. Make sure your firewall is not blocking SuperAntispyware.exe from accessing the Internet.MBAM updates successfully. But, installed the Secunia Personal Software Inspector as suggested on this forum. When I started the programme I get an error that the application could not connect to the HTTPS server. It asked me to check that I could connect through browser and retry - confirmed connection through browser but software connection still failed. Thus, I uninstalled it.

Recently I upgraded to Microsoft Word 2010. Also, I installed Norton 360 instead of McAfee antivirus. This made it so that every time I tried to run Sylcount Gold IV on my computer, Word files would not interact with sylcount and came up with a read only error.

When I began checking this out, I was told that there was a virus on my computer and that someone had remote accessed my computer. This was from the Norton reps. Also, they told me that the computer thought McAfee firewall was still active on my computer even though I cannot find McAfee anywhere on my computer search.

When I tried to check this, I found that my windows firewall will not go on. Originally, it showed error 0x80070424. After I looked that up, I found that the BFE was not installed. I reinstalled that, now it comes up with error 0x80070424c.

Really losing my mind on this. I need that sylcount program for work, and I have to have a secure computer also. I thought that was what the antivirus program was supposed to do... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Serena

Help! I cannot turn on my firewall on my Windows XP. When I click try to turn it on, I get the message, "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?"
I clicked "Yes" and I get
"Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service." I have tried starting it manually, but I get the message,
"Could not start the Windows Firewall/ Internet Connection Sharing service on Local Computer."
"Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
I have both ipnathlp.dll and ipnat.sys files on my computer.
I already did the sfc /scannow and the cmd=> netsh winsock reset and restarted the computer, but it did not fix it. I've tried the netsh Firewall reset, but no luck.
I've done a full system scan and that did not correct the problem either. I cannot run system restore because it can't restore to any dates.

The prime suspect for anything that turns off the firewall is malware so you need to scan with all your anti-malware utilities as soon as possible.

Hi, I run Xp SP2 32bit;
on 12/27/12 i was victim of a virus, removed succesfully. Anyway still remains a problem, Windows firewall won't start up, Windows says that the problem is that Windows Firewall service / ICS is not running, if i try to run it form services.msc receive error message 1068: unable to start service.
I also tried the procedure advised here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074/en-us. But none of these two procedure worked.
BFE service just doesn't appear in the list.

Recently I have decided to check up on my firewall and I noticed an error message 0x80070424 if I try to start it. I have run malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essential scans and there were no signs of any viruses. I have no idea when this happened, but any information on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated. In the attachment I uploaded is what the error message looks like.

You should only run one anti-virus per a computer.

Uninstall Malwarebytes and keep the Microsoft Security Essentials installed, as two AV programs can cause conflicts and problems between each other.

So this is what happened: I turned off windows firewall about 2 weeks ago, to allow a program through, but I forgot to turn it back on. One day I was surfing on the internet and all of the sudden my computer got infected, that's when I tried to turn windows firewall back on, but it was too late, I keep getting this message: "windows firewall can't change some of your settings error code 0x8007042c So now I can't change my firewall settings at all.

And not only that, but I can't download anything from the internet ever since my PC got infected. So I borrowed my Brother's PC to download AVAST ANTIVIRUS and ADWARE CLEANER and saved it on a flash drive, so that I can then transfer it to my PC. It successfully removed most viruses to chest and cleaned my PC it seems to be working fine again, but unfortunately, I still can't change Windows firewall settings nor can I download anything from the internet, as soon as I run the download, it loads for a bit then all of the sudden it disapears.

I've tried starting windows firewall again on "SERVICES", but windows firewall is not even on the list, so therefore, I can't start it. I opened the REGEDIT.EXE/ RUN AS ADM. to access the permissions on Firewall policy, Epoch, DHCP configurations, to change them to allow full control for all users, but they were all already in full control. I tried changing the permissions for parameters for DPS, to allow full control for all users, but it w... Read more

It took me some time to notice this error and other than it being annoying to me it's not really effecting my PC much. The picture below is the error that shows. What I have done...

Tried starting the service manually a number of different ways and the service will seem to start for a moment then stop.
When I go to the Windows Firewall settings an click Use Recommended Settings. It doesn't seem to actually do anything. I'm assuming it tries to start the service and then stops.
There are no types of viruses, root-kits, malware, etc on the PC.
Ran the SFC with no issues.

What I think happened is that I had Bitdefender Total Security on my system. I decided I didn't want to renew so I uninstalled it, but instead of using their uninstaller I used Revo Uninstall Pro to do it because I always trace any programs I install with it. I think I may have gotten to click happy and maybe fudged something up Windows uses for its firewall. But the issue could of always been there I just never noticed because I used Bitdefender's firewall.

Can anyone assist?

A:0x6D9 Windows Firewall error

Sure. Download the .bat file I attached and run it as Administratior.

After if finishes running open the run box (windows key +r) and type "services.msc" hit ok.

Find Windows Firewall in the list right click on it and chose properies and make sure the startup type is automatic. If it's stopped then click start and then ok.

Now from the run box type "msconfig" under the services tab find Windows Firewall make sure it's checked then click apply and ok and exit without a restart.

Now Windows firewall should be in working order.

I inadvertantly downloaded what seems to have been malware or the like earlier today - which opened multiple windows, played the star wars theme, warned me I may have a virus, etc. I subsequently powered down immediately, and was ultimately able to run both a malwarebytes and super antispyware scans, which seem to have possibly removed the problem(s) (I can atually open a web browser now without having 20 other windows open automatically).

Problem is, when I went to update the super antispyware database, I got a message that I could not do so because my firewall is blocking it. When I went to open my Windows firewall settings, I got the following error message:

"Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings."

I am wondering if this means I did not actually get rid of all the malware, or if something else altogether is going on. Any thoughts/help much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi We will be helping you with your problems. Had occasion to check whether a program was set correctly in my McAfee Firewall. Firewall was shown as running, but when I checked further, the Firewall was starting and then immediately deactivating. On checking the Windows Firewall it reported the wrong settings were being used and then reported Error n0x80070424. I ran Spybot and cleaned up what it found. Also removed and reinstalled McAfee, but problem persists.

Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing (ICS) service?

When I press yes it then says:
Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Sharing (ICS) service.

Any ideas?

I checked to see if it was set as disabled, manual, or automatic startup and it is on automatic.

I hope picture explains everything
PS. It has been like this for a year.

A:I can't use my Windows firewall, because of the error 0x8007042c

A whole year? Wow.

First thing I'd do is run a full anti-malware scan with free Malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

I'd next run a System File Checker scan to make sure you don't have any damaged or corrupt system files. Run teh scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If any problems are found, run the scan three times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

See if the firewall can be used. If not, try Methods 2 and 3 in this Microsoft article.

Please post back if any of this helped or not.

Hello everyone,
My firewall doesn't start anymore. The problem started after removing the damn iStartSurf (virus or whatever threat that is). I used adwcleaner_3.310.exe ( What is adwcleaner_3.310.exe ? | System Explorer ) that is the one that, I suppose, really removed the problem and then Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just in case. This last didn't find anything as I was expecting. (these steps are part of a guide for removing iStartSurf)

After rebooting, because adwcleaner finished its task, installing the anti-malware, while scanning with the latter I saw (not sure it wasn't already there since the log in) the control center complaining about the firewall off.
I thought because of the scanning. At the end of the scan I couldn't turn the firewall on anyway.

I have followed a lot of guides and used different "fixing tools"... but nothing.

---------------------
My Configuration:
windows 8.1
Avira antivir
standard windows firewall
removed malwarebytes
removed adwcleaner
------------------------

Error reported:
- If I try to start the firewall from servises.msc it give me the error code 13
- If I try to open the advanced settings of the firewall from the control panel I get the error code 0x6D9
I don't know anymore what to do.
Guys help me, please!

A:Windows firewall error 0x6D9 and 13

In the elevated command prompt type this, it will take a while to run and correct any corrupt system errors.

Hi, I have been having issues with windows firewall and have tried quite a few things to attempt to get it working. When I go to windows firewall in control panel, the only option displayed is "update your firewall settings" with a button labeled "use recommended settings." Clicking this button locks up the window for about 15 seconds, once its able to be interacted with again, nothing has changed. Clicking on "advanced settings" on the left takes me to the "windows firewall with advanced security screen," this is where it displays the 0x6D9 error code and it mentions trying to restart the windows firewall service. It is set to automatically start in Services, but never starts and trying to manually start it gives me a message that says windows could not start it.

I have looked at a few other threads on here and have run 3 programs I found recommended in them: AdwCleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, and DDS.

Any help with this would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Tried to allow access for a program in Windows Firewall, it said i needed to change settings to default, so I clicked it, then an error code popped up reading "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424".
I cannot find Windows Firewall in my services list. From researching this problem, I have concluded that I possibly have/had malware or a virus or something that deleted these and possibly other things. I would like help.

Hi there, in January 2012 I removed a virus with MalwareBytes and cleaned my computer. I did not have any issues until a few weeks ago when I noticed a Trojan that kept appearing in my scans. I would remove, and it would come back. In checking how this was getting through my firewall, I noticed that my firewall was disabled as well as windows updates. I have tried restoring missing registry keys, including BITS, with some success, and have been running FSS scans per the advice I have seen in other threads. However, at this point, I have come to the end of what I can do. I still cannot turn on the firewall. Updates have just now started to work and are installing.

This is my latest FSS scan, Can someone help?

Not sure what's been happening, I'm an admin on this laptop. Whenever I keep trying to start Windows Firewall it will not start any way possible.

But an error that occurs is this
Error 0x8007042c

Looked all over the internet, did mbam scans and didn't really make a difference. I do not have any other anti-virus software than mbam nor have any other sort of firewall program.

If someone could help me, I would be very grateful.

A:Windows Firewall Problem Error 0x8007042c

You say looked all over the Internet? Did you try adding a Local Service account? I've seen that step resolve that error more often than not. However I have seen it not resolve the issue as well. This particular error seems to have stumped many people and have multiple resolutions. The steps for adding a Local Service account are as follows:Control Panel ->Systems & Security ->Administrative Tools -> (scroll down to) Windows Firewall -> double click Windows Firewall -> click Log On Tab -> select This Account -> Browse for LOCAL SERVICE user (Advanced -> Find Now -> LOCAL SERVICE) -> Leave the password field blank Apply the changes. Here is one of several copies of the same instructions:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/windows-firewall-cant-change-some-of-your-settings/2679690e-c375-4232-ae45-404374386635Scroll down to the one dated Dec. 13, 2009 by Mladen SavicHope this helps

Hey All:

Sorry if this is in the wrong place or if I give insufficient info... I'll try to be as descriptive as possible...

My wife got a virus today on our desktop computer. We are running Wondows 7 Professional. She ran the AVG scan and it found the following and placed it in the vault: Win32.Tepfer.kp

She then could not get her printer to work. I was trying to get the printer up and running and noticed that it was not shared on our network. When I tried to share it, I got an error code 0x000006d9. When I googled this it led me to try and get my windows firewall fixed. When I tried to enable the Firewall, I kept getting the following error code "0x80070424 windows cannot change some of your settings". I then googled this and I tried to follow the instructions on several sites, which told me to look in "services" from the Run menu. When I went to the services folder, Windows Firewall was not in the list for me to right click and perform some operations. I am at a complete loss as to where to turn next.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this is confusing....

MJ

Hi guys,Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.I've got an ACER 5750 laptop with Win7 Home Premium with a couple of problems.- I can't turn the windows firewall on (error 0x80070424)- MSE has picked up: * Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.Y * Trojan:Win32/Sirefef.AB * Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.U * Trojan:Win32/Alureon.FP * Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.P * Program:Win32/CoinMiner- Malware Bytes has picked up: * RiskWare.Tool.CKSo, sadly its a bit of a mess...I have run MSE to remove the above which states a successful removal but when completing the requested restart Win7 wont boot and pops up a repair program which will only let the system run if I complete a restore in which case the whole lot starts over. I've also run Malware Bytes which sometimes clears the problem but on restart the problem still exists. It seems to be a very similar problem to TommyC11's issue here: LinkI have run TDSSKiller.exe which doesn't return any threats.Should I follow on with the process outlined in TommyC11's thread? Many thanksStu

Hello

My PC was infected by the WIN 7 Security Malware? I used Malwarebyte's Software and AVG antivirus to get rid of it. I have deleted AVG and downloaded Microsoft Security Esstentials. I am trying to get my firewall on as well as my security center. I have used spybot to try to help my problem as well as Free Window Registry Repair. Both did not help.

I went on the instructions and attempted to get DDS.scr but it would not install. So i used RSIT and have attached the following files. Thanks in advance.

Windows Firewall won't start, getting error code 0x8007042c. BFE won't start, error 5: access is denied. I've scanned for viruses using Malwarebytes and nothing showed up. I tried downloading and adding the registry files again as suggested in some other threads, but that didn't work. I tried following the instructions in this thread for fixing the BFE, and after running

REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18" /S

I got "ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value". The other commands returned normal results.

SFC /scannow returned corrupted files "utc.app.json" & "telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json" but this was fixed with The Tech Cookbook fix - The Tech Cookbook – Windows 7 update (KB3022345) causing corrupt files.

A few weeks ago my Network Diagnostic Service sometimes would not be running either, but that just stopped happening so I'm not sure what caused it or what fixed it.

Thanks.

Hello. I am posting my issue in list format so that none of the important details get ?lost? in the paragraph format.

1. When I go to the firewall screen and click "Use Recommended Settings" I get the following message: Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings Error code 0x80070424.
2. Windows Firewall is NOT listed in my services so it is not possible for me to turn it on that way unless someone can tell me how to make it appear.
3. I?ve already tried creating ?repair.bat? in notepad which did not fix the issue.
4. When I run MBAM it doesn't find anything however MSE did find Alureon. Every time I tried to remove it, the computer would not start normally and I had to go through Startup Repair. This time I just quarantined it and it restarts just fine.

I can only assume that the Windows Firewall is related to Alureon but I definitely don't know for sure. Please help...

A:Windows BLUESCREEN Error and Comodo Firewall

Well first off you can check out their site, and try to find out if they have any updates or patches for their firewall. Also, do you have any other firewalls installed, are you running XP or VISTA, as both of these OS have a firewall built in that you will have to disable before running a third party firewall, well you dont have to disable them, but they cause problems if you do not.

I recently received the Windows 2012 security virus that hijacks your computer and refuses you to open programs. I've attempted to remove this by first using malware bytes and a fix registry that I've located within your forums (FixNCR). The first time I did this it seemed to clear up - but it returned. I followed the same process with a false sense of success and recently had the virus pop up again. I tried another process of running ComboFix (I did this before reading all of the forum rules) on newly created Windows user account. While attempting this, ComboFix noticed I had an active scanner of ESET NOD 32 - this AV software used to be installed on my computer, but when attempting to update the license I was unable to reinstall. Using ESET's very own software removal I thought I took it off my computer, and can still find no trace of it. I installed Avast (uninstalled shortly after) and am currently using AVG. ComboFix still ran even though it said that ESET was running. I have a log which I can post from this if you wish to see it. After ComboFix, and still in safe mode, I ran Malware bytes and SUPERAntiSpyware Free. I then ran CCleaner to attempt to fix all registry issues. While booting up again on my main Windows 7(64bit) user account I went to check out my Windows Firewall and received the Error Code 0x80070424.

Hello all!

ive been trying to work around this issue for about 5 hours now. I have tried many fixes that people are suggesting from all coners of the internet! If anyone else can help out that would be great!

Here are the things i have tried;

I first started this journey with the error code 0x80070424, which was fixed with the microsoft FixIt
I have now been given the error code 0x8007042c, as stated above in the title
I have tried to get poast this with FixIt from MS but with no luck.
I then went onto trying the manually starting windows fix from this website; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530126 , i can get all the way through the steps untill the last one "BFE" because this gives me an error code: 5, access denied.
Ive removed all antivirus software thinking that this may be blocking the firewall by some chance.
I have done many virus scans with all the recommened tools, and i have found nothing.
I have also gone through some of the previous threads about this problem and tried them also. It just seems that i can get past this shit if i can give myself the permission to turn on "BFE". Although im the only account on this pc so its the admin account.

So as you can see i swear im coming to the end of all the fixes out there and everything is leading to a complete reinstall of windows 7; which is a no go, because i can not be bothered with download a TB worth of games haha. ill just deal with the no window fire wall. But any help to get this fixed i... Read more

Hi there,

My PC has been infected by some kind of virus that keeps coming back even after my anti virus has removed it(persistent). So I searched Google for some help using the virus name as the keyword, on how to remove the virus and I ran into one of bleepingcomps tuts. It told me to run combofix, so I run it. And after I reboot the virus is gone. But then I checked my firewall and it showed the error.

My Av is MSE. OS is Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit

Hi
I am now being informed by my PC that there is a problem with my security firewall settings (possibly registry troubles). Ugh!

Here's the error message:

"Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings."

Further information as per this problem:

On Wed. the 26th... I experienced my very 1st... attack by viruses! It came in the form of many viruses such as droppers, trojans, etc. after my wife used my computer online! I still LOVE her tons, but she's not sure what could have caused it. Long story short... AVG picked-up everything (it seems) and I also ran Spybot S&D, Spy Subtract, MS AntiSpy, Ad-Aware... and I think that's all. After those runs, I ran Clean-Up 2005. Anyway... I ran them all each several times since then... and all seem clear. However, this morning AVG went through it's usual update and scan... and 1 additional virus was detected and "healed". Ran all of the above again and all seems clear!

BUT... the problem that I cannot seem to correct is with the Windows Firewall. It is now marked as "OFF" in the Windows Security Centry (alert) and the "Recommendations button" suggestions cannot be followed. When they are tried... the error message "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings." always occurs! Help....

I know enough about PC's in general (enough to make me dangerous to my computer's health if I me... Read more

Hey there.

I'm looking for some help regarding my registry keys for the windows firewall.
I can't start the windows firewall service. I've finally after some time spent trying to fix the BSE, been able to make the BSE running perfectly.

As stated my firewall doesn't work at this time.
I've made an ; sc query MpsSvc, which gave me the following values

Type : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
State : 1 Stopped
Win32_exit_code : 1066 (0x42a)
Checkpoint : 0x0
wait_hint : 0x0

In my registry database i can't seem to find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy

.. and in my devices (incl. hidden) i can't seem to find:
Windows Firewall Authorisation Driver

Under Shared access i've only got "EPOCH".

I've attached both my registry keys for MPSSVC and BFE

Hope to get some good responses, and I really hope to be able to fix this issue with some of your guidance, without having to either refresh, reset og reinstall windows 8 (:

Thanks in advance

Hello and thank you for helping with my problem. Before I begin, here is the link for the help I have received so far by Broni. At his request, I am posting the following: About 6 months ago, I was infected by Win 7 antivirus (or security) 2011. I immediatly ran a quick scan with Malwarebytes and it found 5 or 6 infections. After rebooting, I ran it again to make sure it was off and the scan ran clean this time. Since then, there has been no indication (no slow browsing,no programs crashing, no internet disruptions) that an infection is there. Somehow today I found out that Windows Firewall was turned off. I tried to turn it on and it would not come on. It gave me error code 0x80070424. After researching the error, it looked as if it were a registry error so I turned to bleepingcomputer (see above for the link to my original post). After troubleshooting with Broni, the error I am getting when I try to start Windows Firewall is 0x8007042c. Per Broni, I followed the instructions in the Preperation Guide, starting with number 6. I was able to run everything except number 8, GMER Log, because I have a 64-bit system. When Windows Repair opens, click the Start Repairs tab. Click Start. Uncheck all the boxes except for the following four:

- Reset Registry Permissions
- Reset File Permissions
- Repair WMI
- Repair Windows Firewall

Then click Start. Once it's finished, restart your computer. Let us know if that helps you.

Hi guys,

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
I've got an ACER 5750 laptop with Win7 Home Premium with a couple of problems.
- I can't turn the windows firewall on (error 0x80070424)
- MSE has picked up:
* Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.Y
* Trojan:Win32/Sirefef.AB
* Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.U
* Trojan:Win32/Alureon.FP
* Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.P
* Program:Win32/CoinMiner
- Malware Bytes has picked up:
* RiskWare.Tool.CK

So, sadly its a bit of a mess...

I have run MSE to remove the above which states a successful removal but when completing the requested restart Win7 wont boot and pops up a repair program which will only let the system run if I complete a restore in which case the whole lot starts over. I've also run Malware Bytes which sometimes clears the problem but on restart the problem still exists.

It seems to be a very similar problem to TommyC11's issue here: Link

I have run TDSSKiller.exe which doesn't return any threats.

Many thanks
Stu

I removed Win 7 Antivrus 2011, from my win 7 ultimate x64 machine.

It appears like I removed the virus successfully but can not re-enable the firewall.

I get this "Windows Firewall Can't change some of your settings, Problem Error 0x8007042c " dialog box.

I have been digging around and the firewall service is missing, the file itself has gone missing.

I tried to run scf /scannow but scf is not recognized as an executable no matter what I try.

Not sure where to look next, it appears a fair number of people have bumped into this issue.

I am new to this forum I signed up to see if anyone could help me troubleshoot this problem I have with the firewall settings.
One of my family member's laptop has been infected with the fake antivirus called Win 7 antivirus 2012 and I followed a Tut. I found online
to get rid of it. I was finally able to stop it from executing and had appeared to have taken it off with rogue killer and malwarebytes.
But I still have a problem with the firewall, I used the firewall settings through McAfee but every time i turn it on it turns off within seconds.
I tried to turn it on in Windows Firewall settings but it gives me an error code 0x80070424. I even went into the services to see if i could some how enable it there
but i don't even see the service I believe it has been deleted by some kind of Trojan, I don't know I'd appreciate the help please.

The exact issue is when I try to go in and start the service manually I get "Error 1068: The dependancy service or group failed to start." I know I have the required services runnung except the Internet Connection Sharing service which gives me the same error. I have tried reseting winsock and all that other stuff but it just dosn't work.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, and thanks to everyone who helps on this forum. I am unable to start Windows Firewall in Windows 7. When I try to update the firewall settings, it gives me the error code 0x80070424. I tried the Microsoft "fix it" solution to no avail. In Services, I do not have Windows Firewall, Windows Event Controller, or Base Filtering Engine listed. I did get infected many months ago with the Win 7 Antivirus 2011 (or one of the variances) and "sucessfully" removed it with Malwarebytes. There are no other outward problems other than not being able to start the firewall. Since months have passed since I got the infection, I don't know if this is related to my current problem.Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum, at the suggestion of staff. ~ Animal

Hi everyone, Every time I try to open up Windows Firewall and modfiy something, Windows gives me an error saying:"Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.Error code 0x080070424"I've already looked up and tried a few things in an attempt to fix this myself. Apparently this error is caused by some sort of malware being installed on my computer. I have AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012 installed on my computer, and I did a scan with it on my computer. It got 4 pieces of infected things off of my computer. You can see the exported overview here.I also ran step 1 on this Microsoft support site and had the program scan my computer. Nothing was found, but Windows Firewall still wouldn't open. So, I moved on to step 2, opened up the Services program, and Windows Firewall wasn't there.I'm not entirely sure if there's anything else I should be posting here right now, and if there is, I'm sorry. But anything that would help me get Windows Firewall working again would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!*Moderator Edit: Moved topic from AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods to the more appropriate forum. ~ Queen-Evie*

Mod Edit: Moved to Am I Infected from WIN7I wasn't sure wether to post this here or in the Am I Infected? forum. When I try to turn on Windows Firewall or Windows Defender it says it can't with Error Code 0x80070424. My computer was recently infected with the redirect virus. I tried to restore to an earlier point of time but it failed (and I can't remember the reason why, sorry) but now restore points are gone. Along with that Wordstarter no longer works, not sure if that means anything. So I used the TDSkiller and it found nothing and after a couple days the redirecting has stopped, this all started on the 3rd and its been over a week without redirecting. I'm not sure what to do next to startup the Firewall or Defender, any help would be appreciated. My OS is Windows 7 64bit if that helps.

Good morning to all of you!

I've discovered this treasure vault of helping tools and good advice through Google, after searching for the n-th time for a solution to my persisting problem.
Specifically I found -and read!- this thread here as the symptoms are ~99.9% similar to what I have too. The first indication that something was wrong was when the other PCs in my home network 'lost touch' with me. I found that the firewall was down and that it was impossible to start it (getting the message on the Topic Title). Then some, not all, windows updates started to fail to install -if I'm not mistaken, all of them were related to fixes to the NetFramework libraries.

Now, before I start going step-by-step through the list of actions you adviced user 'scorcher' to perform, I thought it would be useful if you had a picture of the current state my system is in. Perhaps there is something a bit different, calling for a special intermediate action. Below I append the contents of DDS.txt and I also attached file "Attach.txt" (renamed, for my convinience "1-Attach.txt").

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Hi,

Not exactly sure what happened, but my Windows Firewall is turned off and I cannot turn it back on.
I receive error code 0x8007042c when I try to turn it on manually.

Ran Panda Antivirus Free and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and no virus or malware found.

I've tried the suggestions from the Microsoft website ?0x8007042c? error message when you try to start Windows Firewall but no success.

I've also gone to Services and run as admin. Received the following error messages for each when trying to start the service:
1. Windows Firewall: "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."
2. Base Filtering Engine: "Error 5: Access is denied."
3. SharedAccess/Internet Connection Sharing: "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Hi bhawks,

Try this methods: Windows firewall can't change some of your settings Error code - Microsoft Community

If no virus or malware found on your scan. I would suggest doing a System Restore from the day you think your firewall is enabled. Also, you can do SFC /SCANNOW

Hello,

I have a problem that other users have already described here (and been able to remedy with assistance): the Windows Firewall on my laptop does not work any more -- I cannot configure it through the control panel, and when I try to open it, it shows the message:

"The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing [obviously, that is not possible]. Error code: 0x6D9."

My operating system is Windows 7, 64bit version. All recent Windows updates are installed. I have Malwarebytes installed and ran a scan recently, with no results except for one tracking cookie. I also have Sophos Antivirus installed, which also did not find anything when I ran a scan.

Perhaps somebody could be so generous and tell me what I could do about this?

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi,

I recently got a virus (not sure which one) that disabled both my Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. I've done virus scans with AVG and ESET and after removing some trojans they are reporting the computer is clean. I also used Windows Malicious Software Removal tool, and it found no viruses.

With the computer cleaned I proceeded to follow the instructions given in this Solved Unable to start Windows Firewall - Page 2 - Windows 7 Forums (Specific instructions shown in quotes below).

I was able to start the BFE service after adding it to the registry without any problems but when I attempt to start the Windows Firewall service I get an error that states that it "could not start Windows Firewall on Local Computer". I queried the Windows Firewall service and get Error 1060.

If anyone knows how to fix this error please let me know.

Cheers

Hello:

I'm looking for some assistance. I have a Lenovo 8811 ThinkCentre desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1; 2.13gig Intel Pentium Core2 with 3 MB memory.

This is my teenage son's computer. We are trying to set up workgroup to share files across wireless network (having difficulty there, but that is another story). I noticed Windows Firewall not operational. When attempting to turn on firewall and update settings, receive message that "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x8007042c."

We use Windows Essentials for virus protections. I tried some things I found researching, but it hasn't help. Updated Windows Firewall Authorization Driver Startup type to Demand and other things. Ran Malware, SuperAntiSpyware that found several trojans, adware, etc. Disenfected and reemoved but still can't start Windows Firewall.

I'm sure there are other issues with this machine, but not having working firewall scares me. My son tells me a "Dirty Install" will fix this. I don't know what that is?

Any help is appreciated to get the Firewall up and running. Please advise if you need additional details. Thanks in advance!
