Windows Media Player, Explorer.exe, Folder with large amounts of .avis

Q: Windows Media Player, Explorer.exe, Folder with large amounts of .avis

Hello there,

I have a problem on my computer where when I goto a folder with a large amount of .avi files, it crashes explorer.exe. I researched on google, people had the same problem and the way they fixed was by deleting windows media player, however I need windows media player to stream my videos to the xbox.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

A: Windows Media Player, Explorer.exe, Folder with large amounts of .avis

You could always split them into sub folders so there are less files present at once.

Hi:

I have searched far and wide to a solution to this problem. The only solutions I have found are for Windows XP and do not work on Windows 2000.

Here is the problem:
Windows Explorer crashes when people try to view large AVI/MPEG/MOV files either in DIVX or in another codec.
The machines are Dell Precision Workstations with:
-Quadro 4
-512 MB RAM
-2.4 Ghz Intel p4
-80 GB HD
-Windows 2000 with all the latest patches

When you open the file within Windows Media Player, the files open fine. Once someone tries to click the file in Windows Explorer, Explorer.exe crashes then restarts itself. Each of the machines is running the latest NVidia drivers.

I have totally rebuilt the OS image from the ground up and we still have that problem.
I read somewhere that Windows XP tries to 'index' avi files but since the info is at the end, it gets caught in an infinite loop.
Is this the same as Windows 2000? The software installed on these machines are Maya 5.0, 6.0, Adobe Premiere 6.5, Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe After Affects, etc...

Thanks in advance for any advice one can give.

Hi,

This is all generally centered around my music folder, all the songs are in one folder because thats what works best for me. My problems are as follows:

When I right click I get several options for Windows Media Player, I want none of them, I hate it, I only use Winamp and WMP never gets touched, how do I get rid of this.

Also when I right click I get options for Winamp, all I really want is Play (the default double click for a music file) and enque in winamp.

Also, all the files in the folder all have the same winamp icon, why then, when I scroll across to view more songs does it take its sweet time loading them? The songs have the loading icon until the winamp one finally replaces it. Its rather annoying.

Any way to fix these annoyances? Thank you.

Note: If I leave the folder open for a while I can zip back and forth between all the music files and all the icons will be loaded and theres no lag whatsoever....

Second Note: Is this edit feature new? It's awesome!

anyone? The Media Player options are really annoying, my right click list is so long.

**Partially Solved** After installing Norton software I had, the first two symptoms (svchost.exe and explorer.exe taking mass amounts of memory) seem to have disappeared - I'm not 100% sure as i've only had one restart and been on for two hours, but I haven't had either of the huge memory uses so far. For people having those problems, it seems the two culprits were: security risk Trojan.Viknok.B!inf and Trojan.Vikadclick.

That said, I am still having a few problems:

- Anything opening Windows Explorer (the program that lets you view files/folders, etc.) takes 15-25 seconds to load, if I load [Computer] or [My Computer] it can take 30-40 seconds. Before this, it would usually only take a couple of seconds to load.
- I still get Webpage Error popups constantly, asking if I want to debug - this happens very frequently even if I check the box labeled "do not show this message again."
- When I shut down or restart the computer, the screen flashes black a couple of times, and in that interval, a blank window surrounding the entire screen pops up for a split second. It is difficult to describe, but imagine if your desktop was open in internet explorer or something, having a menu bar and the minimize [ _ ] expand[ [  ] ] and close [ X ] options in the top right like most windows programs do. This by itself doesn't pose much of a problem, but it started the exact same time the other symptoms began occurring, so I am a bit concerned.

i used virtualdub to capture a vhs tape using no compression. this resulted in a 41gb file. i then used virtualdub to select 61% of the video so i could save that clip to a separate avi file. however, the resulting file size of that clip is 38gb! that leaves only 3gb for the remaining 39% that i didn't use and that makes no sense. mathematically, it should be a 25gb video file, not 38gb.

i am using no audio/video compression while trying to save this segment. i was under the impression that it would just save a lossless copy of the portion i selected. apparently it somehow adds even more data to the stream.

why is the file size so large?

note: i do not want to encode/compress this file. i want it to be lossless and uncompressed.

This started happening three days ago, and happens about once every day, and now, once every few hours.

After a certain amount of time, many programs will suddenly freeze, crash, fail to show a window, etc. For example, explorer.exe will become nonresponsive, internet explorer will crash, and when restarted, will lock up and become nonresponsive, windows media player will not produce a window (although wmplayer.exe is launched), and system restore will not display a window (although rstrui.exe is launched). Before the first occurrence, the programs work fine; however, after they experience that problem once, they continue to experience the problem. Also, they seem to be somehow linked; for example, if internet explorer crashes and fails to display windows properly/becomes nonresponsive, trying to use Windows media player later will not work either. I should also note that nothing is hogging the CPU during this time. However, some programs are completely unaffected. For example, Firefox 3.5.5 works completely fine, Office 2007 works fine, Process explorer works fine, along with most of my non-Windows programs. What I’m starting to guess is that there is some problem with my graphics related to parts of the operating system and programs close to it, but I’m not sure.

Most of the time, simply restarting the computer doesn’t solve the problem. I system restore to provide a temporary fix by going into Safe Mode and starting system restore from there... Read more

UPDATE: Discovered OS was mega curropted. I am just going to do a full clean wipe reinstall from disk. Issue resolved. Don't use Iobit!
Hello there, I am having a really confusing issue. I am on windows 7 Home Prem 64x. My windows media player is constantly updating my C:\Users\Maggie\Videos folder and it will not stop ever. I have even tried removing the library from windows 7 and it keeps updating. When I added it back I noticed some really odd folders in videos. "s2ms." "s35o." & "sk0." without quotes. When I try to open them I get the "refers to a location that is unavailable-" error. When I try to delete them I get "is no longer located in .... verify the items location and try again" error. When I look at properties it says it's a file folder. Windows shell cannon, I believe because the folders end with a period. The security tabs says it cant display the information. I can not rename them either. I am completely confused. I have never encountered these and can't find information online. Can someone help me?
I don't know if these issues are related.
I did recently have the windows search service off however I reactivated it. Still endless updating. I also had Iobit adv system care and crap on my pc before this. I wish I had never installed them. I have cleaned my stuff up with Kerish doctor and wise care 365 now. I still think my computer is damaged from Iobit especially since I had the pro version which went even deeper into the registry. Hi all,

My internet provider has shut down my connection. They say that large amounts of e-mails have been send using my mail-account. This is the account that I got from the provider. I never use that to send mail, but I did put a strong password on it.

I have scanned my pc with the following tools with no results:
Symantec endpoint protection
MBAM
Spybot S&D
Kaspersky antivirus
F-secure online scan tool

Also all my applications are up to date (win7 64bit), I have Online Armor firewall installed and windows firewall enabled.

They say that they can only reconnect me when I prove to them that I have found something (virus, trojan, ...) and that I have removed it.

My wifi network is also being used by another PC (which was not powered on at the time the e-mails were send according to my ISP), an iphone, a samsung phone, an ipad and a Synology NAS. All have up-to-date software. The NAS also has its firewall and antivirus enabled.

From my experience with computers and virus scanning from the last 20 years or so my opinion is that all hardware is clean.
However, my ISP says that there MUST be a virus or trojan somewhere.

Where to start investigating?

Hope you guys can help me.

Eshoxx

My FireFox is using large amounts of my CPU. I have a Core 2 Duo 2.66 E6750, so I don't really see how it could be using that much. Along with this, I'm encountering lag with what I'm doing.

At the moment it is using roughly 50% but earlier was using 70-80.

Thanks.

A:FireFox using large amounts of CPU...

Try running it in safe mode (that's with the -safe-mode parameter), there should be shortcut in Start -> All Programs.

If it's resolved, then it is an extension causing it.

Also, make sure you have the latest plugins installed. To check try running the Secunia on-line scan -

Trying to troubleshoot general poor system behaviour, instability issues. Among other things, playing video files is problematic. Video files not playing are only one example of issues, and I get several different errors:

- Comm Surrogate has stopped working (I get this when for example I right click on a JPG and select PREVIEW). I can go into paint and open the file that way, that works fine. Same image.

- Windows Explorer has stopped

- VLC Media player has stopped working
- Windows Media player has stopped working.
- the file in question plays on my other Win 7 machines here, there's nothing special about the files themselves.

I get messages that the fault module name is Stackhash_ xxxx

I don't want to get off on a red herring with video errors, although they're not independant of the issue, they're just examples of the issues I have.

Windows Explorer crashed when I tried going into Dev Manager, for instance...

I've googled some corective measures but nothing has worked so far. Updated drivers... the usual.

One thing I might mention, This is on an Asus laptop, and I use the HDMI output to feed to my TV. This is how I use it 100% of the time.

I have tried taking the computer to a previous time but this does not help. I downloaded firefox, which is working fine. Same with Itunes. But I am more familiar with the old programs and would like to have them back. Any suggestions?

This just started yesterday, and I've used this machine for 2+ years without any problems.

A:Windows Explorer crashes, especially when I use Media Player

This problem seems very odd but it is a an early indication of Malware in system or corrupt shell files.
Youcan try simple methods first being making sure pc is virus and spyware free.
Then going to microsoft update website to download the latest updates.
Then you could try system restore, go to accessories, system tools and system restore, pick a date and restore system to it.
Last options
click start then run type sfc /scannow
mind the space, insert system disk and wait for it to finish. This will check all system files and make sure they are accurate ie not corrupt or fake.

Is there a way of blocking the amount of spam and junk emails my hotmail address keeps recieving?

In the last two months i recieve about 15 emails a day about the same thing but from completetly different addresses..thanks

A:Stopping large amounts of spam.

Not really, Other than deleting your account and starting a new one.
I have 2 hotmail accounts that I use, the main one I never give out except to close friends, the other is for everyday use and gets deleted about every 6 months (or whenever spam starts coming) and a new one created. I have email forwarding on the other account so all emails are instantly forwarded to my main account. It works really good, you just have to remember to log into the other one every now & then so it doesn't automatically get deleted.

Also, NEVER post your email in places like this on the web!
If you look in my sig, you will see some more information about spam.
The 2 emails below have only been posted on the 2 forums I use and as you can see in this picture they get a lot of spam:

Good luck!

Hello sevenforums,
Recently I discovered through looking in resource monitor that the processes in my (windows 7) PC were using on average 400kbps of my network. I have a 50g plan and was wondering how I could possibly be "exceeding the data limit", but I think this is the problem. The processes doing this are mainly multiple conhosts, dllhosts, msieexec, a ctfmon process, presentationhost and even notepad. (there may be more). The reason I know this is not supposed to happen is because years ago I had a 4g plan. I've also seen screenshots of people getting 1kbps. Could someone suggest why this is happening and possibly how to fix it? I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but due to my slow internet after "exceeding the data limit", it's difficult to search for it, so please provide a link if there is. My internet provider is Optus (sigh I know.)

On another note, when I scroll down, there are two svchost listening ports with adresses IPv4 unspecified and IP46 unspecified. I'm not sure what this means or if this is normal.

Thanks in advance for any advice given.

EDIT: I use cable internet.

I recently tried to torrent a game, I took a chance and It seems I screwed up. My NIS is telling me it is detecting High amounts of outgoing traffic coming from my computer. This is minutes after having downloaded a file, It was a .exe. I took several steps to make sure it was legit I even started up  my VMware to see if the file was harmful at all. Anyways, after I saw this from Norton I knew it was from the file. I have never experienced this before. Norton is blocking the Intrusion Attacks. But I want to rid of what is making me known. I will give data and what not when needed.

You need to start a new topic in the malware removal forum.

Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.
If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.
When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. Explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.
After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can close this one.

DO NOT bump your new topic. Wait for a response from one of the Team Members.

Anytime I exit the application that's using it and reopen it, I get a BSOD. I have attached the dump files from the past few weeks. Can someone please help with this?

A:Continuous crashing with large amounts of RAM

NOTE: I have severe eye problems. If I do not respond to your postings, please PM another staff member for assistance.

NOTE: Please provide the following information for a more detailed response: http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ta-452654.html

Looks to me like it's due to the drivers for a USB audio device (we've had BSOD issues with these in the past). The extra info that I requested will help us to isolate the offending driver/device.

The dump files blame the E-MU USB-Audio 1.0 Driver - so that's the place to start. Uninstall that program, then download a fresh copy from the E-MU website and install it.

I have never used a proxy. If you see anything suspicious about ANY files anywhere, do ask as I am the sole owner and operator of this computer and I know what I have messed with in the last 3 days.

I'm having some trouble with a couple folders in my music collection. I'm using W7 x64 ultimate, and for most of the folders the description tags are visible and sortable within explorer.exe. However, within some of my folders the files appear untagged to explorer and WMP, but the tags show up fine in programs such as WinAmp. When I right click on a file within these folders and go to properties/details, I am unable to edit any of the fields.

When I load the file in a program such as TagIT 3, the tags show up fine. I tried to use the Convert Tag from 2.4 to 2.3 function and it had no effect. Does anyone know how to force explorer (and Windows Media Player, which also can't see the tags), to read them?

So I just built this computer. It has been done for a little under a week now. I am relatively new to doing this kind of thing and I have been having this problem since the computer was finished. The problem I am having is that windows media player and internet explorer are crashing. I am running windows vista so it will pop up the little fix it messages when things like this happen. The fix it message reads...

Download latest version of NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

This problem was caused by NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller, which was created by NVidia.

A newer version of this product is available that might solve this problem.

I have downloaded this and installed it but the problem continues to persist. The motherboard I am using is a NVIDIA NForce 780i SLI, as I said before I am running vista 64 bit, video card is a GeForce 9800 GTX, the processor is and Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz, and I have a 500gb sata hard drive.

I would greatly appreciate any help/advice that anyone has to give. This problem is really driving me nuts

A:Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player crashing...

Can no one help me? Would anyone maybe know any other reason something like this would be happening besides there being an issue with that driver? I have noticed those little fix it windows can sometimes be wrong. I was having an issue with Internet Explorer a while back and it was telling me it was because I didnt have a program for "smart web printing" installed. I wasnt even doing anything with printing... So I know that it can be wrong so maybe it is wrong now. I dont know where else to go though or what else may be able to cause something like this to happen...
I would really appreciate any feedback anyone has. Even if its just a thought. Anything helps!! :)

Perhaps you should try to copy them in parts

I have several large files I would like to save to disc to free up storage. Also I would like to make emergency back-ups of games in case the original discs are damaged, lost, etc. I only have a CD-RW drive so, my question is: Can I only use CD-Rs/CD-RWs to save? I'd prefer to save them on DVDs because of the large amount of storage space and I've heard they will not deteriorate as fast as a CD.

A:Saving large amounts of data, etc. to disc

If you have only a CD drive then you may only use cd media.
I suggest that you get a copy of Norton Ghost.
Norton Ghost will allow you to backup your files or the whole disk drive.

Every time I boot up my computer the process svchost.exe starts using larger than normal amounts of memory, to the point that the computer is slowed down to being nearly unusable. I can stop the process to temporarily fix the problem but it always creeps back up.

I dug around in the past few days of activity for my antiviral and noticed an alert from a few days ago I had missed. Norton noticed an odd temp file called winupd.exe. I'm not sure if the issue I'm having is related since it seemed Norton removed this days before I started having problems. Since this is the only notice I've had from my antiviral recently, I figured I should mention it at least.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you c:

Normally when I want to copy text from a .pdf, I simply place my cursor at the starting point and drag it down until it covers all the text I want to copy and page. It is a slow process but for a small amount of text it is not a burden. But if I need to copy a large amount of text (pages) it can be slow going. Is there some way I can speed up the process?

This problem just started this morning, everything was running fine last night.

Upon booting up, the process svchost.exe is using more system memory than normal greatly slowing down the computer.

I can temporarily stop it by ending the process in task manager but it is back up within 10 minutes.

Rebooting has done nothing and my computer cant seem to restore to an earlier point. I don't think it's a virus, both Norton and Malwarebytes say my system is clean.

I'm using a Dell Computer, running windows XP Home Edition.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. If there's any other information I can provide to help please let me know. Thank you.

A:[SOLVED] svchost.exe using large amounts of memory

SVCHost is an essential windows process but it can be called by a malicious piece of software. Setting that aside for the moment since you ran Norton's and MWB's, can you take a screen shot of Windows Task Manager with the 'Processes' tab open and the memory used ordered from most to least? Then post it here?

What is better when moving large amounts of files and data (20+) to either copy or cut the files? Or does it not make a difference?

I was told cutting fragments your hard dive while copying does not.

I've only noticed that cutting is faster.

A:Is it better to Copy or Cut when moving large amounts of data?

If you Copy, you aren't moving anything. Cut will move it though. w7 will auto defrag your drive at any rate.

Hi, im new to this forum so i hope im not breaking any rules by just coming right out with a problem!

i built myself a new computer recently and although it's not the first one i've ever built, i'm certainly no expert. i was getting lots of BSODs right from day 1, but when i swapped out the PSU for a larger one, everything seemed ok.

but when i started copying all my stuff onto the hard drives i started getting BSODs again. whenever i transfer more than a few GB of data, either from one HDD to another, or from a DVD to a HDD, the computer bluescreens.

occasionaly a BSOD will happen out of the blue, even if im not actually doing anything, but transfering more than 4GB or so of data is guaranteed to give me a BSOD.

i tried various diagnostics like memtest86 but everything comes up fine. but when i swapped the system drive for a different hdd with linux, transfering data works fine. so i'm fairly certain it's either some element of windows or the ssd that windows is installed on.

i turned on driver verifier and got another bluescreen, and ran the sf diagnostic so i've attached my dumps

i really hope someone can help me with this, thanks

Hi there,

Was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm experiencing an extremely slow internet connection. My internet connection is a Starband 480 (higher bandwidth satellite than the 360). Now the satellite has it's own problems but what's concerning me is that I've noticed is my upload bandwidth.

I use NetPerSec to monitor the traffic on my computer. In the past week or so, I've noticed that every now and then something is sending over 1 MBits/sec from my computer. I can close all the visible programs and it still occurs. Unfortuantely, there is no pattern as to when it happens.

I've run Spyblaster and Spybot with updates as of yesterday (2/16/04) and everything is good according to them.

Below is the output file of Hijack This. If anyone has any hints, they would be most appreciated!!

Why are you running a cybercafe server from a home satellite connection

I thought that that software was for directly connected client computers onto a master server

Hello -

So, because of this thread, Unable to recognize USB flash drives (All), I backed up all the files which were on my old flash drive onto my roommate's iMac (this was because the iMac recognized the 32GB flash drive, and the PC I was previously using it on all of a sudden did not).

What I'm wanting to do, either by remote desktop, SFTP, or some other transfer protocol, is transfer the one folder with all of the data (about 18GB or so) from the iMac over the PC using the network.

What is the easiest way? I've enabled remote desktop on my Win7 machine, and I am able to remotely connect from the iMac to my PC using my private 192.168.x.x IP address. However, I'm not able to drag and drop the folder onto my desktop to initiate the transfer.

Can someone guide me into the right direction? Or, should I not even use remote desktop for this? Thanks.

A:Best way to large amounts of data between iMac and my PC (via WLAN)

18 gig transfer is going to take much longer than perhaps fixing why your pc doesnt recognize the flash drive.

Here are a few screenshot I took of the offending process.

The last screenshot is the properties of the offending process and I used the program Process Explorer to view it. By the time I took that picture svchost.exe was using up to 500k of physical memory.

Also I've tried Ending the process tree using the task manager which works for awhile but then it just starts up after a minute or two. Ending the process tree a second time causes it to stay closed which I'm happy for.

Clicking on a large folder in Explorer can cause a slowly-moving green progress bar. In some cases this can take several minutes to complete.

A common cause is thumbnail caching of image and video files, resulting from having properties | customize | "optimize this folder for:" set to pictures, vs documents or General items.

The most likely solution: in Explorer, right click on folder, select properties, customize, under "optimize this folder for:", select either General items, or documents. Set check box "Also apply this template to all subfolders", then click apply.

The slow progress bar is apparently caused by Explorer scanning the folder and all subfolders to pre-render thumbnail images for image and video files. This happens if the "optimize this folder" setting is pictures or videos. This happens when merely clicking on the top-level folder.

If "optimize this folder" is set to documents or General, the thumnails are not rendered until you actually click on the folder or sub-folder containing those.

This was discussed in another thread on this forum, but it was full of speculative remedies, and the actual cause and remedy was not posted until the last thread (and one year after the thread was started): Accessing drives in Windows Explorer takes a long time

I'm creating this thread with a more exact title and concise description, to aid in finding the solution based on a symptom search.

While the above is the most... Read more

Two computers, both have windows media player, and both have the same files/folder structure. A bunch of music files, assored mp3, wav, midi files. Some have a .doc, .txt, and a few .rars

On one computer, there is a handy "Play All" button that loads media player and all the music files are played.. But on another, that button isn't there at all.

Any idea what the trigger is for it to appear? Really like the idea of not having to manually add every song to a playlist when I get something new.. Never really bothered me until I realized there WAS a play-all button. Now I want it back even though I have never had it before..

I've looked, and the subfolders in that archive have a play all option, but not the main one.

Windows XP File Explorer won't recognize CD-ROM or DVD discs w/o Win Media Player

I don't know what caused this, but all of a sudden if I want to browse the files of a CD, whether it be music or program files, in my CDRW or DVD drive using Windows Explorer I get an error message of "Incorrect Function" or "Insert Disc" for the DVD Drive and for the CDRW drive there is no message, but no files appear. If I open Windows Media Player, however, I can then view the files in Windows Explorer. Also, if I open NERO or Roxio Burning applications first, I can view these files in Windows Explorer. I have not made any recent changes in my PC except adding Itunes, Napster and Music Match. I have uninstalled all three apps, but the problem still persists. Anyone know what is causing this and/or how to fix it? It seems like the drives aren't bein initialized or something unless one of these apps is launched. As a workaround I have set up WMP to run minimized at start-up. My concern is that If I ever have to re-install XP, would the drive recognize the XP Recovery CD.

Thanks in advance.

I want to mirror all content, including installation of OS and software, from my internal 320GB harddrive onto a 1TB external drive. My thought was that Windows would use some files at all times, so I ran Kubuntu live and tried to drag and drop all content from c:\ to the new drive. This won.t work since there are errors coming up all the time (cannot create directory etc). So how do I do this? Any recommended backup tools?

The thing is that I bought a Dell XPS M1530 that is breaking into pieces within its first half year. I though I.d go for a sophisticated and expensive machine, what I got is a pile of junk that needs replacements and adjustments constantly. And Dell has "no responsibility for clients data" so I had to buy another external harddrive to do the mirroring myself.

Best regards

Hi

what you want to use is norton ghost, or arcronis true image, these programs can create a snapshot of the disk, including boot sector (something you wont get with just copying the files over), restoring is just a case of running the program and then restoring the image.

If I copy and paste a page such as an internet page onto ‘Microsoft Word processor’ from Microsoft works 6 (which I guess is the equivalent to WORD), I have a message that says its unable to complete the task as I do not have enough memory and suggests I close existing running programs or re-start windows...neither of which work. Apart from that, memory is not an issue of course.

I do not have a problem however with a smaller amount of text.

Any ideas?

The situation is as follows: I've got a computer that doesn't show particularly high CPU usage, but multiple instances of explorer.exe spawn and take up lots of memory, up to 2BG of ram each.
Based on looking at the network traffic for this computer on my router it looks like it's connecting to web sites and downloading video files, .mp4 and .flv files. I'm assuming these files are being stored in ram by explorer.exe somehow and this is whats using up all the ram.

Internet explorer doesn't seem to work, most of the time it simply doesn't load web pages, so it's probably part of the infection or infected by the same virus.

Also while multiple instances of explorer.exe are running GPU utilization goes up to 100% as reported by process explorer, I'm not really sure why that is happening.

Unfortunately I've already tried running Malwarebytes, combofix, Eset's online scanner, Kaspersky's online scanner andTrend Micro's online scanner earlier today. Combofix deleted a couple of files but that's it, nothing else is finding anything, the problem seems to still be there tho. It looks like dllhost.exe and svchost.exe are probably involved because even in safe mode while the computer isn't doing anything at all these services will spawn and sometimes despawn and will respawn each-other if killed.

A:Possible virus downloading large amounts of data in background

Well eventually after looking at the IPs that it was connecting to using Wireshark. One of the IPs was 31.128.104.126. Searching that resulted in a page suggesting it was associated with the TR/Gamarue.A.99 virus. Searching that indicated that Avira actually would have some success finding and removing it.

Despite the fact that no other antivirus scans found any of these things avira found the following.

TR/Gamarue.A.99
e2h[1].htm - html/iframe.arx2
cpc[1].htm - js/iframe.el.2
vsvusgvu.exe - tr/kuluoz.a.87
costcoform_overland_park.exe - tr/kuluoz.a.87 trojan

As well as a bootrecord virus boo/cidox.b.
Avira was able to remove all the other viruses and I was able to find instructions on this site to use Kaspersky's TDSSKiller to remove the boot record virus and was successful there. After that everthing was mostly better except IE was having problems loading some pages. A quick restore/repair of IE's default settings seems to have fixed that. I'll be keeping my eye on the computer for a while to make sure there's no weird memory or GPU utilization, and I'll never know what sort of stuff that virus was up to in the background using up to 4gb of RAM with explorer.exe but at least it seems to be gone.

Hey guys.

Recently I've encountered a problem whilst trying to clean up my HDD (it was filling up way too quickly and I wanted to get rid of some unwanted games/programs), and I noticed a problem with file sizes of even small programs.

For a start, I am a massive FSX simmer, so that's why there's so many FSX addons in my screenshots.

Anyway, I use "iOBit System Care 6 Ultimate" to clean up my laptop, and I was trying to use the inbuilt uninstaller to get rid of some programs. This is what happened:

Now, I know that all those programs DO NOT take up that much HDD space, considering the hard drive in this laptop is currently only 500GB. I can almost guarantee those programs DO NOT take up those huge amounts because 1: They are reasonably small addons and 2: Because on my old laptop, they never took up that much space.

So I also tried Revo Uninstaller, and this was the result:

Ridiculous, is it not?

Now, notice the top result? The "Carenado Cessna Skylane HD Series FSX"? Well, that's DEFINITELY not 50GB, that's 100% wrong in all fronts. I took a screenshot to prove so:

Yeah, that's TOTALLY 50GB right there

So, last but not least, here's my HDD space/free space:

Note that only the "Windows C: and Recovery Drive F:" are part of the HDD, the other partitions are part of my external 1TB HDD.

Weirdest part is that, the files DON'T take up that much space when I right click - properties in Windows Explorer. Now, I'm not sure what's the... Read more

Got a pretty good sized network, 1k+, and the credo has come down to verify who has what privileges to what folders, and to do so on a quarterly basis. I know how to do this manually, but am also pretty certain I remember in one of my books that there is a way to show access by folder automatically; can't remember if this would be done from the parent folder and it would spit out the output for all the child folders, or even is this is in AD or GPO. Or, for that matter, if it's a third party app that would allow me to view shares and export them into a communcable format.

I just seem to remember that there was a LOT easier way than just going user by user and seeing who has what perms.

I've been having the following problems with my computer all day now:

1) Can't send any emails (through Yahoo or a separate WebMail site)
2) Can't post large amounts of data to any website (for example, on a forum, if I make a post of a couple of sentences it submits instantly, but any long messages cause it to stay loading for about a minute before coming back with "Do you want to save posting.php")
3) Can't sign into Windows Live Messenger or my MSN account on the new version of Pidgin (but I CAN sign in using an old version of Pidgin Portable)
4) Can't stay connected uploading to FTP for more than half a minute before the connection drops
5) Random errors popping up on websites with AJAX (e.g. Yahoo Mail), and a few sites just not loading

All of these problems started this morning and I've turned off the power to my router and PC many times, hasn't helped. I tried all of these actions on another computer on the network and they work fine, so it must be a problem with the computer.

Yesterday, when I double clicked on an MP3 I'd just downloaded, Media Player didn't start. I tried using a launcher to open it. When that didn't work, I tried opening it from Explorer, but no go.

Today I wanted to run a search to make sure a backup operation had worked correctly. When I clicked the Search Button I got a blank Search Companion the color of my desktop.

Usually, I use another player to listen to music, even though WMP is my default player. And usually, I use Search GT instead of Windows Search when I'm looking for a file. So - I don't know exactly when the applications quit. I am wondering if it has anything to do with Windows latest update. However, I don't see anyone else posting about this problem.

My system is fully patched. I ran a virus scan and got nothing. Event viewer doesn't show any errors. Very odd. Computer is running fine, no problems except for this.

Suggestions would be welcome.

Thank you,

I seem to have a unique problem, that I've been searching for hours for a solution on. Anytime I try to load Internet Explorer and WMP, the window will appear for a brief second then disappear entirely. I look in to the task manager and it says neither are running. The computer I'm using was riddled with viruses and malware, which I took care of, although it seems that the damage done couldn't be fixed. Windows Live Messenger is giving me error 80040154, and I've followed the solutions, none of them worked. I think that ultimately, something is preventing ActiveX from working, which is stopping all three, because I've noticed one thing in common for all three applications, that Internet Explorer is absolutely required for them to work. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling up to IE8 or 9 and it still won't start up. Games such as Anarchy Online, that have an ActiveX control on the login screen, do the exact same thing, a flicker of a window then it shuts down immedietly. I can find no work around, no repair utility, or anything. My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium x86. Also, a few things I've noticed that I think are related because they came up at the sime time, anytime I install something and it tries to make a link on the desktop, it comes up with an error. I can put one on myself, but Windows Installer can't seem to do it. On top of that, whenever I'd bring up something that would let you say, search for a file through Windows,... Read more

Yesterday I discovered that Windows Media Player wouldn't open. I double clicked on an MP3 I'd just downloaded and Media Player didn't start. I tried using a launcher to open it. When that didn't work, I searched the .exe file out in Explorer and tried to open it from there, but no go.

Today I wanted to run a search to make sure a backup operation had worked correctly. When I clicked the Search Button I got a blank Search Companion the color of my desktop.

I have windows XP with SP2

My PC seems to have developed, for no reason the following problems. Iv'e had my HJT log checked and cleaned but the problems still persist.

Search companion - when i go to the start menu and click on search, the search window opens. i see the little dog in the blue box to the left of the window but nothing else. there is no where for me to type anything to search for, no buttons to click to start the seach, nothing.

Windows Media Player - Whenever i try to use windows media player i get a message which says internal application error. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. when it gets to the end of the reinstall it says internal application error.

Internet explorer - I am no longer able to open various web pages eg www.real.com and the windows update page, also pages which show calenders ie the type of ones you get when booking flights or holidays to help choose a date. I click on the link but all i get is a blank screen. Along the bottom of the screen is the message done. Also a lot of links on the windows dont work. Ive particularly noticed this when attempting to purchase items from teh internet. It can't be a web site fault because i have the problem with many unrelated sites.

Any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A:Various problems inc search companion, windows media player and internet explorer

1) Open your browser

Click on View--->Toolbars-->make sure what u want is clicked on in there.

If not make sure its not locked and hidden

2) What version are u using? If 9 try 10. Also try a reg cleaner like regscrubXP. You can find it on Majorgeeks.com then reinstall

3)do u have the firewall enabled in SP2? If so check it to make sure that you havent set up firewall rules to block these site.

Also make sure u have Java enabled on your webpages.

4) Get rid of SP2. Its too buggy still and cause too many problems for its own good.

So, the last few months I've been noticing that svchost.exe has been using hefty amounts of memory, and I usually notice this specificaly when I've been playing a MMORPG game, I assume it's relevant since they are games that make use of the network. And by hefty I mean I can get from 300MB to even 1.3-4GB, I've 4GB of RAM by the way.

I may have some other malware leftovers from when I tried to clean this PC some time ago when a family member made a mess of it, wouldn't be surprised if they are the guilty ones.

Aside from that I noticed a few days ago my CPU having 100% usage out of nowhere, the weird thing was the process that was draining it kept being changed, didn't make much sense since all of them were just regular programs that I know are not viruses, no idea what happened there.

Also, kinda off-topic but I got my credit card information stolen a few weeks ago, I used it a few times in this PC, wouldn't be surprised if there was a spyware somewhere here.

Anyway, here are the logs:

I feel that my issue is similar to this one and many others: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/553338/fake-google-chrome-rogue-processes-dxvjblkaapexe-cant-remove/ .

Before I say anything, I have just reformatted my hard-drive a month and a half ago and bought a new SSD due to what I believe is the start of the death of my hard-drive.
About a week ago I noticed this odd program running as google chrome, at that instant, I knew that it couldnt be part of chrome, given its hidden location and cryptic name in my appdata file. That same day my liscense for Bitdefender was over, and I immediately installed Kaspersky as a trial and I went to scan it, of course, just like in the topic posted above, it did not pick up anything. I then went to try to delete the file immediately after restart, which, actually worked, but on the next restart, it was being reported by task manager again. When I looked, it had somehow moved to another folder. This application has been eating up my ram like crazy, there are at least fifteen separate instances of it running, consuming nearly four of my eight gbs of RAM combined at times. I will appreciate any and all help that I can get.

A:Fake Chrome processes. Removal was unsuccessful. Its using large amounts of RAM.

Hi there,

About two days ago I noticed my internet speed was becoming intermittent and much slower. I originally thought this was an ISP problem as I've had issues there previously, but everything is stable their end and my phone does not experience the same issues.

I looked at the data packets sent and received and in the past 45 mins my laptop has uploaded over 350MB of data whilst receiving only 60MB. I have not tried to upload anything at all (and never do).

The uploading is choking my internet speed to the extent that downloading things has become an issue.

I have run virus scans using AVG (Free) and McAffee (Subscription that came with my laptop). I also have ZoneAlarm (Free) installed on my laptop.

Below are the results of the SysInfo:

My computer has been issues where, when playing video games, will crash after about 5 minutes of gameplay. What I think may be happening is DirectX using up more and more memory and then the computer crashes when its out of memory. I've noticed that the game I'm playing will start to run more and more slowly and then crash.

Here's a screenshot of the blue screen reader

Hello forum! I've been having this problem for the past couple of months. When syncing music to my iPod (attempting to transfer about 54gbs worth of music) I've been getting a BSOD halfway through the process. I've tried this at least 10 times with the same results each time. I've been having the same issue when trying to movie movies and tv shows to an external hard drive.

Attached is a picture BSOD I'm getting and the debug folder.

After I updated to windows 8.1 (from 8), windows explorer is taking up way more memory than it use to. Windows explorer would only use around 37 MB but now it uses almost 300 MB and it shows through poor computer performance. I have tried ending the process and restarting it but sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.

A:Windows explorer using high amounts of memory

How much total RAM do you have ? If 4GB or more, that much memory used should not have any impact on performance. FF is taking much more than that.

I have Windows Media Player 10 and Total Video Player. I use Total Video layer to watch some movies. Anyway the default program to open audio/video files with keeps switching to Total Video Player. I want the default player for all media types to be WMP. I went into the options menu in WMP and checked all the boxes on all formats for WMP to be the default player, but every time I restart the computer the default player to open half of the media files reverts back to Total Video Player.

How do I fix this.
