Changed start-up programs and now, device drivers gone

Q: Changed start-up programs and now, device drivers gone

I made a change to my start-up menu and as a result, the sound no longer works, I can no longer get on the internet, when I go into Device Manager, its empty. I tried system restore. It showed previous dates I could revert back to, but I wanted something more recent, so I went into "create a restore point" to set my own date and it set the date to the current date (at which everything is lost) and got rid of everything previous to that, so now I can't use that either. I tried using my memory stick to download files to the computer, but it doesn't recognize the stick in My Computer. What's funny is that when I use Malwarebytes, "H:\" drive shows up to be scanned. Also, I can backup Quickbooks because it too recognizes my memory stick. I am computer ignorant (as my name implies) so if I need to provide any more info, let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I thought I'd change my start up menu so not so many programs opened at start up. Thinking this would be easy I just stopped a few programs that I thought would speed up my start up. I did that thinking that it was easy!!
Now I have lost all programs and internet connection from the laptop and can't do anything with it.
Questions: Do I need to do something easy to bring it back (I tried system restore ) It doesn't have anything I can find to restore it to.
Question: Would I need to reload windows 7? or can I do it an easier way.

Hi guys, so I have a little problem, I've downloaded FileTypesMan because I wanted to change the .exe files appearance on my computer.

I did this using this program - all .exe file icons changed, however, with them changed ALL the shortcuts to all the programs that I have on my laptop - now they all look the same.

I can't figure out how to change it all back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
THanks

Hello Max, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed exe item in the tutorial below may be able to help. It'll restore the default association and registry entries for exe files.

Windows 7, UFDs and iPod Nano were working fine. Then I cloned the Windows 7 C drive using the Samsung Data Migration tool from an 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 256 GB SATA 6GB/s Solid State Drive MZ-7PD256BW to an 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E500B/AM). Running Windows 7 on the new cloned 850 I can't use any type of USB storage, including different brands of UFDs, or my iPod Nano. Device status for each of these says: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" Other USB devices such as mice, keyboards, and Bluetooth adapters work fine.
I've tried everything I can find on the Internet, including the following:
Restarted the computer, maybe 50 times.
Tried updating drivers: I get "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."
Ran Windows Update several times.
Uninstalled ALL devices under Universal Serial Bus controllers and rebooted.
Tried Microsoft Fixit troubleshooter.
Looked for but was not able to find USB lowerfilter or upperfilter entries in registry editor (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\), there are lowerfilter and upperfilter entries in other areas, including class diskdrives, the lowerfilter is SamsungRapidDiskFltr and upperfilter PartMgr, however I don't think that this is the problem since the Registry on the 840 system has the same entries. Interestingly, the registry export for the 840 Windows 7 is 607,727 KB and for ... Read more

Hi,
I came across an issue that I find confusing. Whilst trying to install a software to run a mobile USB flash modem, the software pops this message:

*************************************************************
your current device installation settings is configured to prefer drivers from Windows Update over locally installed
drivers. This can cause Unlimited data Manager not to work correctly.

do you want to change the settings to prefer locally installed drivers over Windows Update?
**********************************************************

What does it imply if I change my settings to prefer locally installed drivers over windows update drivers?
And can this action be undone and where/how? (I searched my machine but didn't find where this option is)

Thank you for reading

Hi there,

I have an HP Pavilion DV7 2185dx laptop running a freshly installed windows 7 upgrade from windows Vista. Ever since the upgrade my CPU is constantly running at 98-100% all the time meaning I cannot do anything on my PC. After researching a bit online it could possibly be the driver errors I see in device manager?

In device manager I see that I have some drivers missing and all attempts to update these have failed and i've seen other users here post the missing drivers and be directed to the fixes.

I am writing this on a Windows 7 based Samsung Netbook with an Intel Atom inside (and the Starter edition of Win7) However, I also recently acquired an Acer Laptop - (E1-530) which came with Windows 8.0...

After downloading and trying Win8.1 for a week or so, I decided to try Linux - can't even remember which version - Ubuntu I think, though neither went well, so let's gloss over that.

Anyway, I bought a copy of Windoze 7 32bit online for the Acer and installed that, but now my system tells me that I don't have a genuine version, and I've 5 missing drivers - and because I have no wi-fi, I can't download them directly...

Ethernet controller
Network Controller
PCI simple Controller
SM Bus Controller
USB Controller

And to make matters more complex, the Acer is a 64bit version...Oh... and I've already tried downloading them from Acer, and other System setup sites, with downloader s/w... But, they all seem to drive me nuts with ads, and viruses.

Answers on a post-card please... ;?)

A:Device Drivers for Laptop with no network drivers...

all of the relevant drivers can be downloaded from the acer website for your laptop.

you can gain access to the internet from the acer by plugging an ethernet cable in directly from your router/modem.

only download from trusted sources, and when it comes to drivers only download from the vendor. just go onto the acer website, click support or downloads. and fill out the form. making sure you choose win 7 64bit as well as the correct model of laptop.

Hi everyone,

The problem I have is really strange. I updated my BIOS from my computer manufacturer's homepage. After doing so, I had to reboot my pc. However, once my pc rebooted, a similar message as the following appeared: Press F8 to select boot device. If I would not press F8 my pc would not start up at all. Yet, when I pressed F8 it gave me a list of boot devices to select from. I selected the HDD drive, which in the end worked out perfectly, since i could restart my computer without any problems.

So you guys might wonder now why I am posting this here, if there is not a problem. Well, every time I start up my pc it asks me to press F8 and start up my pc from the specific boot device. I have managed to make my pc reboot automatically, without having to press F8 every single time.

However, how can I remove the F8 screen from showing up?

Before I run the BIOS update it never said press F8 to select boot device.
Is there any way to remove this screen or skip it? It is really annoying and delaying my computer start up.
Thank you very much in advance!
regards,
Trock

Hi,

This has been bothering me for a while now. I have a HP Compaq 510 Laptop running Windows 7 Home 32bit. My speakers are Altec Lansing.

Here's what's happening, whenever I'm playing music from my winamp then suddenly I get a call from Yahoo Messenger or if I use Skype then the sound output suddenly switches to my laptop speakers instead of the Lansing. This happens when I'm using other softwares too like Mixcraft. I had to restart my computer for my Lansing to be detected again.

Can you help me with this problem?

Thanks

Hi
After installing W8 on my second harddrive, I am surprised to see that the drivers letters are changed.
On W7 it apears like always that way:
driver 0: (C) Windows7
driver 1: (D) Windows7
on E is ubuntu
(F) Windows 8
On W8: (c) is for W8 instead of win7 and (D) is the actually (C)....
Why is it? Can I simply change the letters and the problem is solved? or what is hidding behind this mistake?

My IDT audio works fine and my laptop's sound works fine, but when I hoop up my laptop to my TV through a HDMI cord I get my laptop's video output displayed on my TV but no sound from my laptop is output to my TV. And when I click properties on the High Definition Audio Device, it says, " This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful". Any help would be great. I created a folder on the desktop called "Program Downloads", this is where I download all the executables for my programs. When I downloaded a program by clicking "save" I was always able to easily navigate to the desktop and the appropriate folder.

For some reason now if I try to download a program it wants to download it in "user\downloads". Not surprising I suppose but it never did that before and it is difficult to get to the desktop and ultimately my Program Download folder. I don't think I changed anything. I had briefly moved the Program Download folder to My Documents and created a desktop shortcut for it but then decided to move the actual folder back to the desktop.

edit: Actually it's more widespread. Anything I do I no longer has the "desktop" option in the left pane. I have to click on C: and eventually navigate to it.

Where did the "desktop" option go?

oops I guess I have to expand the "Favorites". Wanted to delete this thread (no need to show my stupidity ) but can't figure out how.

I tried troubleshooting it but it says :

but my device manager says this:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My computer also says I need to activate my windows. What is wrong with my PC?
I cant un-attach these two photos sorry

A:Changed my motherboard sound device not found; OS problem

First it says you have to activate windows because you changed the motherboard and it sees it as a new system. If thr on-line activation doesn't work you will need to call the phone activation.

Now for the sound. Start by deleting all the sound devices in device manager and reboot. What motherboard make/model? Never mind, see it in your specs.

EDIT: Your new board has a VIA audio chip from what I see, Not Nvidia. Do you have a separate sound card?

Evening all,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but my problem is kinda hardware related.

For some reason, unknown even to me, I decided to change my computer from ACPI Multiprocessor PC to MPC multiprocessor PC and it's had grave consequences.

I think I’ve already wasted my one and only chance at fixing it the easy way, though the Last Known Good Configuration setting offered while booting.

Now I think my only chance may be some mystical C:\Mega Dos Commands to Reinstall Old HAL Drivers\\ type of ‘thing’. I’m hoping such a dos-style command prompty fix might be available through the ‘repair’ function offered by the Windows XP pre-installation.

I am currently running the same computer (windows installation on a different partition) is there any way to chance the settings from this installation?

Thanks to all and every who offer help or info,

-Eddey

Hi,

(Sorry if this overlaps w my thread in Hijack This) -
I am the only admin on a laptop shared by several people including a teenager who is not very responsible. I have a user account w admin privileges as well as the Administrator account. I have noticed that when I change a program, eg upgrade Firefox, on the user/admin account that the Administrator account Firefox doesn't change. Is this normal? Does it mean effectively that things like Windows Updates are user-specific?

And when I run my antivirus, will it see everything on all users plus administrator, or not? Can I delete other users' cookies etc.

I have an HP laptop, run Win XP Pro SP2 fully up to date, Firefox 95% of the time, Kaspersky, Spybot Search and Destroy, SnoopFree, Winpatrol (but last 2 just added last few days). Thanks.

A:Admin - if I change programs are everyone's changed?

It will vary based on the program. Windows updates is a system-wide thing, but I believe this will only run for Administrators. Firefox keeps everything separate so addons and updates for one user don't affect the rest. Most antivirus programs will update for the whole system as well as scan the whole system for viruses. Some older ones, however, may not allow a full scan in a limited account.

I have a user that his kids were playing on and clicked something that caused the cpomputer to restart. When the computer restarted all the link on the desktop and in the start menu are all changed to excel looking icons and a error come up when ever you click on one saying there is no program associated with this action. I ran malewarebytes and removed over 200 items off the machine. But i still cant get the icons back to the normal icons with access to programs. Anyone have any ideas. I have about 6 hours reading with no difinitive answers.

Woke up this morning to a strange problem. Any program I open has the top of it cut off. Can't see the x or resize option etc. The width of the programs, however, is normal. Steam, itunes, firefox, they're all doing the same thing. I updated my monitor and graphics drivers. The problem persists when adjusting resolution, so that won't work. Restarting didn't help. Never seen this before. It's very annoying. What's the deal?

Running Win7 Home Premium 64bit.

Also fun fact: I just tried to take a screenshot of the issue, but it showed the top of the bar normally even though I can't see it. So that's not happening.

A:Can't see the tops of my programs. Changed overnight.

Try adjusting the controls on the actual monitor itself?

I'm new at this posting thing; if you can bare with me.

Few days ago I was switching from online radio to dvd to youtube and suddenly you-tube played but I didn't have any sound. I went into settings to Sounds & audio devices and I believe it was here where I saw a list of 'sound areas' such as Outside, Concert Hall, Basement, etc., but I dont believe it was the 'Sound Schemes'.

Any way all my music and DVDs and such now sound echoy like a concert hall and it is with every microsoft and non-ms. program. I've been to the control panel so many times, I don't know what to do anymore. Grateful for any suggestions!!!!

I think I could probably fix it if I could just find a 10-band equalizer. There was always one it my other computers but not on this one.

Went to SupportSpace....Steve B. fixed my problem W/in a matter of minutes. Then of course when I saw where he went, I'm all Oh yeah Glad this site is here anyway!!

Greetings,
I am pretty decent at troubleshooting problems, but as viruses and hackers become more and more clever, it becomes more difficult for me to locate the problem myself. This time, I am actually quite stumped, which is why I registered here.

I am running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension XPS Gen 2.
The problem I am having is every time the computer is restarted, something disables my task manager. Something is rendering me unable to activate Norton's auto protect, and just today the sounds coming from the computer just echo. I have never had the echo happen so I don't know how to fix it. The task manager is easy to enable, but on a restart it just gets disabled again. Another problem that cropped up that is more games related, but I will mention because it happened around the same time: In World of Warcraft, any creature near a body of water shoots off rays of light that they don't ordinarily emit, to the point of being literally blinding.

Around the same time I was getting a BSD every restart, and had to use Last Known Good to even get the computer to start. I tried so many things to stop that one that I am not even sure what did, or if it was even me that stopped it, seeing as how problems persist.

My most recent actions to attempt to fix the problem were to run Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spy Bot Search and Destroy, a manual scan with Norton (I can still do those), run Windows Update (I am on XP SP1 by the way), and to run HijackThis to get a log that I d... Read more

Newbie here, just getting into working on my computers.

I have an old eMachines T2895, 2.8 GHz celeron, 120 GB Hdd, 512 Mb DDR RAM, Realtek ALC655 onboard audio chip, running on XP home.

Here is my issue. The notorious eMachine power supply fried, taking the mobo with it. The old mobo is an MSI 6714 GV. I replaced the PS with a good one from newegg. I found a used mobo from a supply house, but it was a newer revision mobo. Its a MSI 6714 GVP. After installation, everything works fine, except no audio devices recognized or listed. Reloaded drivers from manu website, but nothing. Could it be that the hardware is not added? Where is the add hardware options located? Could this be because the mobo was previously using a sound card? If so, how do i change the settings back to onboard audio? Can anyone suggest why audio devices aren't being recognized, or what my problem might be?

All help would be appreciated.

A:Emachines mobo & PS fried, changed and now audio device not recognized

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

Un-install any audio software.
In "device manager" look for any "yellow "?" ", if none, check the bios for audio settings.
If it had a sound card previously then the onboard audio has been disabled in the bios.

A:reboot and select a proper boot device also motherboard changed

It's rare that Win7 will boot with a mobo change because the hardware difference is too great. But you may be able to adjust it using this boot disk to Adjust Win7 to boot on new hardware with Paragon Adaptive Restore CD.

I doubt whether activation will hold though because change of mobo almost always causes deactivation, and once you change mobos the Product Key on COA sticker no longer will work because the hardware change is considered too great - unless you change the mobo to the same model.

It's possible that it may by a fluke hold activation, or that MS may allow it if you use Phone Activation after it deactivates and rejects the key.

I suspected virus damage. My fix was a clean install of WinXP SP2 including formating the hard drive. Now my ethernet is not recognized and my DVD is assigned to Drive H (there are only 2 drives total C and H). I have tryed several times to install new drivers for my ethernet and several other drivers including the mother board. Each attempt appears to ignore the .exe totaly. I suspect the bios has been changed but cannot locate a replacement version to test. Is there someother place I should be looking for the fix or another fix I can try?

Hey guys, I've got a problem with Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer 6, to be precise). Whenever I attempt to open a new instance of IE, either through the start menu or desktop shortcut, nothing happens. Well, nothing seems to happen. But in my running processes, there it is, IEXPLORE.EXE, always using approximately 16MB of memory. Every fourth or fifth attempt at running IE does actually work and open up a window.AVG, Ad-Aware and Spybot don't tend to find anything obvious (well, obvious to me at least) - although AVG does shot that there's been a change to the "hosts" file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts... It doesn't seem to let me do anything about it, though. I'm hoping that you guys can see if there's anything wrong from a Hijackthis! scan. In desperate need of help

Someone told me to update my sound drivers, to maybe fix a mic problem which i did, and so i installed the newest 2k/xp drivers (im using 2k), for sound blaster live !, and after i installed them, my sound is totaly different than what im used to, no matter how much i try to configure it, i still cant get the same sound i got with my original drivers. So i tried add/removing the new drivers, and the sound is still the same. Maybe all of the new drivers wernt deleted, but i dont know why its doing this. So i put in my original sound blaster live cd, installed that, and still, same sound. PLEASE HELP. all i want to do is get my old, original drivers back. Thanks

A:Audio not the same anymore since I changed soundcard drivers.

Oh man what an informative topic. This will help people who have the same problem as you to find their solutions.

What exactly is different about the new sound? Quality? You may have some EAX Environment enabled - either you did then or you do now. Or some equalizer settings jumbled around.

Sometimes my avg shows windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts as a "changed" file. It has done this 3 times now. However, it was not 3 scans in a row, there were completely clean scans between them. My computer has been having problems lately. I couldn't figure it out and then I saw this forum about "host" change (c:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\HOSTS CHANGED) in AVG and realized I have the same thing! If it is a trojan of some sort, I have no clue on how to fix it and realize I will need guidance just as another member was guided through it to fix the problem. I have a HIJACK THIS log to share and would love some help to resolve this problem. I am pretty sure that if it is a trojan of some sort that is responsible for slowing my computer and such, it is probably because I was using BITLORD and most likely downloaded some corrupt file or something. So far I have removed mostly all of my files from my computer, I have removed programs and defrag'd my pc... I scanned it with Norton, AVG and SPYSWEEPER as well as SpyBot and Hijack... AVG picked up the host change thing and my Norton keeps telling me a recent attack to my computer was blocked. I don't know if that message keeps popping up because I have AVG and Norton or if is this possible trojan or what. A:My Avg Found C:\\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Changed

Hello jazzyul23, It is normal that AVG shows that files, the MBR or Boot record to have changed. These are done during normal maintainance, when you or windows updates files or have had to correct errors on the drive. The only time that you should worry is if they also show as infected. To get AVG to quit showing them as changed, open the AVG Test Center, click the F3 key on your keyboard and tell it to accept the changes. If it still shows something as changed after this.. delete the file named AVG7QT.DAT in C:\ and AVG will rebuild it the next time it is run. General system maintenance can change the Hosts file even when it isn't apparent by visual inspection. AVG uses a checksum to compare a file before and after and a minor change or correct to the file would have caused it to appear changed.Lets check your HOSTS file. It's located at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. You can open it up in Notepad. If it's just some lines on top with a # in front of it and followed by 127.0.0.1 localhost, then you don't need to post it;however, if there are others following 127.0.0.1 localhost, you may have to fix it. Post it here if that's the case.*******************************************I don't know if that message keeps popping up because I have AVG and Norton or if is this possible trojan or what.I (as well as MicroSoft, McAfee and Symantec) recommend that you DO NOT have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at ... Hello, my name is Brandon. I'm new to this forum. I'm having the exact same problems as another member named Chris. forums.techguy.org/t307784.html I tried to follow the instructions layed out in that thread but have encountered some problems. I believe that I've removed all the viruses from my computer but all of my shortcuts are still showing lnk extensions. I was able to run a full scan using adware plus.

The next step on the thread says to download the EXEFIX08.reg file and add it to the registry.

1). How do I "Rename the extension from TXT to REG and double click to add it to the registry"? I've tried but have been unsuccessful. When I download the file, it opens either as an html document or in wordpad. I'm not sure how to rename an extension in wordpad. Can you please explain how I can do this?

Also, I would appreciate some more clarification on this statement "Before doing this, run Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View Tab and ensure that Hide Extensions of know file types is UNselected."

Dear all,

I hope somebody can help me here; I just restarted my computer (WLAN was acting up a little), and when it came back on, the fonts in both my Firefox and Google Chrome have suddenly changed - the Firefox one to something that kind of looks like Arial Black/Bold (not sure though), and the Google Chrome one to something Italic.
However, when I check in my Firefox (my main browser) under the font settings, it still says Times New Roman, size 16.
I checked under Control Panel in Fonts, Times New Roman is still there and seems good; Malware Antibytes and Antivirus return a clean system.

Any suggestions?

A:Browser fonts suddenly changed; other computer programs etc. are OK

By far the simplest fix is to use System Restore to roll back Windows to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

Is pretty much the same problem that i am having. none of my exes will open and all my shortcuts got change to .lnk and don't work. my friend was using my computer when this happened, lol, but i think it has something to do with spyware and adaware messing up or something.

It seems that in the previous post JSntgRvr fixed their problem, but i'm having trouble fallowing it. I was wondering if you guys could post some kind of step by step fix.

Dear all,

hope someone can help me here.
I just restarted my computer since my WLAN was hiccuping (it does that once in a while, has to do with the internet provider), and when it came back on, the fonts in all my internet browers (my main browser is Firefox, back-up is Google Chrome) have suddenly changed; the Firefox one to something that looks like Arial Black/bold, the Chrome to something italic. The weird thing is that if I check the font settings in my Firefox, it still says "Times New Roman", size 16 - but that sure isn't what it looks like on the websites! (Other info: am using Windows 8)

Any suggestions? Please help, these involuntary fonts are driving me crazy while surfing the web!

Thanks,

Anke

A:Fonts suddenly changed in all internet browers, other programs OK

I'd check the Windows\Fonts folder to see if by chance your default font(s) got deleted somehow.  If so, you could copy what you need from another computer.  You could also try System Restore to a few days back.

Good luck.

I was trying to download a trial of adobe photo shop to do my homework and i am on my moms laptop. i went to open the program and a dialog box popped up asking what program i wanted to use to open this file, (i didnt notice the checked box at the time stating it was going to use this option for all files associated with this extension!) and the only available program that was listed was WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER and i needed to use the program so i clicked on it.... wish i wouldnt have. it changed ALL my .exe programs ie; google, firefox, system restore and now anytime i try to run anything the media center comes up!!
I have seen on the web that several other people have done the same exact thing. I was freaking out cause this is not my computer and so i went to accounts and made a new admin desktop, which thank god worked, which is what i am on now. but any solution to this problem i have found involves doing something on the actual desktop that is messed up. but i cannot open any executable files on that desktop ie;command prompt,so i cannot do anything on there.
i know there has to be some way to reverse what i did, i just need someone to walk me through the process so i dont screw the computer up any more than i already have, please help me so that my mom does not kill me..i am able to open system restore in the new desktop, i but dont think that will have any affect on the change i made let alone have an effect on the other desktop from this desktop. Hello,I need my computer checked to make sure their isn't still anything on it from this Trojan. Here is what happened. She pressed open to a file that said something like Setup11245.exe. It changed all the desktop icons to adobe reader link and they were usable. I would try mozilla and adobe reader would open in and give an error. I wasn't here when it happened so the firewall must have been down, because she called me and I told her to restart it and after it did, it picked up the file and removed it. Strange thing is, though, that I can't find it in the history or log of the Antivirus program. When I came home, I scanned the computer with Microsoft Security Suite and Vipre AntiVirus and found nothing. Then I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9.4 and all the links worked again but I'm afraid something is still on my computer. The internet and startup seems a little slower but other than that and the crash below, it's the same. One other thing, gmer.exe crashed when it got to device\harddiskVolumeShadowCopy1. I closed it and I did it again and it worked. It took forever, about 20 hours.here are the Logs.DDS (Ver_10-11-10.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Andrew Saputo at 19:35:02.55 on Tue 11/23/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.7600.16385 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_22Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 6.1.7600.0.1252.1.1033.18.2013.1230 [GMT -8:00]SP: Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! *disabled* (Updated) {67844DAE-4F77-4D69-9457-98E8CFFDAA22}============== Running Processes ============... Hey,

So just under a week ago, I wanted to disable the C drive for my kids so I changed te perms to everything disallowed then cancelled it 5 seconds in, then only allowed read. Now I want to change this back but i can't do so, can't even get into Backup and restore because System32 is locked.

I have no way of imaging it to original state. Any way, I can get it back to before? Do I need to boot from Linux? I would much prefer doing something inside of Windows or doing a system repair from boot.

Thanks for all your help!

Today, I wanted to use an application called Zadig, which replaces the drivers for USB type devices. However, I accidentally replaced the driver for the integrated webcam! Applications like Skype will no longer recognize the webcam. Additionally, after checking the device manager, the integrated webcam is now located under USB devices... My computer thinks it is a USB device now. I uninstalled the driver and deleted the driver software, and restarted the computer. However, it just reinstalled the incorrect driver, and it is still under the USB category in device manager. I cannot seem to find the integrated webcam driver  for the XPS 15 9550 on the dell website. Can somebody please help me out?
Thank you!

A:Solved: Browser fonts suddenly changed; other computer programs etc. are OK

Hello Surfstar,

Are you referring to the font for Google search results? Taking a screenshot, uploading to Imgur and including the hosted image in your next reply may help understand exactly what you're referring to.

Have you recently installed any new browser addons or extensions?

Hi
When my PC automatically updated to Win 10 all went smoothly, it did not ask me for a Microsoft account and always showed my name on the start up /welcome screen (the one with for squares). We needed no password to access the PC and anyone in the family could use it. Last week my daughter was looking at some photos on the PC and decided to 'share' some with her sister. To do this she had to log into her own Microsoft account. Now our PC has changed, it shows my daughter's name as Administrator and we have to use her personal password to access the PC. Why has this happened and can I get back to how it was before - no access password and my name as Administrstor?

Good Morning,

I've searched around but can't really find any details on this;

I girlfriend has a Dell desktop, running XP SP2 - It has no previous problems but was out of use for around 6 months and so she somehow forgot her password to log on.

To get around this I booted into Safe Mode and changed the password through the Administrator account which I've done a dozen times before without issues. I restarted and then got the error:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

At which point it keeps rebooting itself - it will not start in safe mode and will not go back to the last good configuation (although I've rarely seen this work sucessfully anyway).

I'm hoping I can just do a repair of the registry files via the XP disc, however what sort of success rate am I looking at as there are files she really needs to get hold of.

Secondly, I took out the hard drive (XP SP2) of an older system I have at home in the hope of making this the master drive and slaving the corrupt drive and try to pull the required files this way, I've obviously changed the boot sequence to boot from this new drive - I get the the XP loading bar screen, where it just restarts itself again.
I've tried all the combinations of running just this drive, but with the same results - just seems a little odd that I wouldn't boot from a completely different drive (this drive is known to be working correctly).

Both drives are... Read more

I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help.

A:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

Code:
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Cheers,
Jamey

Okay,
I was having major problems with XP so i decided to do a dirty install. So I reinstalled, keeping all of the other data on my hdd. But when I got windows back up and running, I still had all the programs in the Program Files Folder, and they could run, but all the shortcuts on the desktop, the start menu, and the add/remove programs are gone.

I understand why this happened, but I haden't even thought about it before reinstalling.

I checked around and even resorted to Microsoft's site and their resolution was: Revert to backup of shortcuts....lmao

Well, all help is appreciated and thanks in advance,

I also noticed that some of the desktop icons had a small shield on them and when I tried to open them, they would not open and a window would open stating "specified module could not be found". I tried uninstalling some programs and they would not install. Then yesterday, I had to remove the Vista Home Security 2011 malware, which somehow got through McAfee and my Malware security. The past three days, it's happened about twice a day to me. Just at seemingly random times, my currently running programs stop working and attempting to open new programs just results in the program's icon being momentarily highlighted in the taskbar, and then it disappears, as if the program automatically closed itself. This even works for simple programs like Notepad or Paint. Any currently running programs usually crash or stop working. All of my tabs in Chrome will have the pages using Shockwave crash, and attempting to open any new tabs or navigate to new pages will just result in a white screen. The computer is fast and responsive on the desktop (ie, I can open and close the start menu and highlight programs on my desktop with a mouse rollover), and nothing on my computer is frozen, just not working.

This all happens just at one single moment when everything stops working right, and I have to manually shut down the computer, because going through Windows to shut down or log off does not result in anything. Upon startup, everything is back to normal. CTRL+ALT+DEL command results in a black screen with the cursor visible, but nothing happens.

I was recently infected with quite a bit of malware, but as far as I know, I got it all off. I don't know if this is was "malware" or just my computer being a bleep. What do you guys think?

A:Currently running programs stop working, and new programs won't start.

What malware did you find and remove?  What did you do to find and remove it?  You may not have gotten all of it.

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum. My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today.Your Hijackthis log is clean, but I hope the following quote from the AVG website will help:http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php...6,backpage=,sv=It is normal that AVG shows that files, the MBR or Boot record to have changed. These are done during normal maintainance, when you or windows updates files or have had to correct errors on the drive. The only time that you should worry is if they also show as infected. To get AVG to quit showing them as changed, open the AVG Test Center, click the F3 key on your keyboard and tell it to accept the changes. If it still shows something as changed after this.. delete the file named AVG7QT.DAT in the %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\avg7\ folder and AVG will rebuild it the next time it is run. The %ALLUSERSPROFILE% is different for each version of Windows. The following are the typical locations for XP and Win9x XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg7 Win9x -C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\avg7

A:Avg Anti Virus Found C:\windows\system32 \drivers\etc\ Hosts Changed., What Do I Do, Is This A Problem...

Hello Phil, my name is David, welcome to Bleeping Computer! My first remark is to say that yes, unfortunately you are infected. To be more specific, from the Hijackthis log you posted I can see you are infected with Sdbot trojans/worms, which are capable of backdoor activity. To be brief, due to the status of some of the files you have on your computer, I strongly recommend that you do the following immediately. Disconnect the infected computer from the internet until the computer can be cleaned. From a clean computer, change your online passwords-- for email, for banks, eBay, forums etc.... Do not change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. I've research the entries, and found this information, in case you find it useful:Netverchk.exe is Trojan/Backdoor. It has the ability to change the hosts file. So, that's the first thing, I recommend you change your passwords. Here are two useful links, in case you wish to read more on the infection you have:http://fileinfo.prevx.com/spyware/qqe7ee46...VERCHK.EXE.htmlOk, now onto the removal, please follow these instructions exactly as posted, it's important. Also it is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any ste... Read more

I was installing a program... i didn't knew what
changing the 'sid' would do ... apparently it did that during installation ... and now i cannot start my Windows at all. Please help!!

Can u tell me how to fix this? - i tried using 'System Recovery Options' and :

1- Startup Repair, doesn't work (it isnt able to find & repair)

2- System Restore, wont let me restore it at any restore points.

3- System image recovery , doesn't work.

4- Windows Memory Diagnosis, doesn't resolve anything.

5- Command Prompt -> well i was hoping to fix the thing from here. But i don't know how? How can i use this command prompt (what commands) in order to fix this?

When i open it, it starts like this: X:\windows\system32> .... why is a 'x' instead of a 'c' ?

Any suggestions? Help please!

A:Windows 7 doesnt start - sid changed

Hello Erind. It sounds like your System Repair is going to an internal ram disk. You might see if this tutorial helps solve your problems. When you get to Step 11 it goes into more detail about using the "X:\" special provision of the command prompt.

Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery

As the tutorial says in the beginning, "the instructions presented within this tutorial must be followed correctly, or you can damage your Windows 7 installation even further." Please keep us informed of your progress.

Hey all, after using AlienwareGUI for a while to swap to a theme I uninstalled it after a while. The result made the IE icon on the start menu the IE6 icon. I've gone to the quick launch IE icon and changing that icon back to IE7 but it still didn't fix the start menu one. Anyone know how to get it back?

And yeah, doesn't look like much of a problem but I go nuts about it. Probably because im a perfectionist and every other IE icon has the IE7 one. <_<

A:Home page changed on start up?

You need to go here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html and download hijackthis to its own folder away from the desktop, like for instance in my documents, then post back the log that it produces for analysis ......

I recentlly had a problem with my PC where when i turned it on the HDD light would just stay on and nothing would start or come up on screen (no beeps but all fans started). I purchased a new CPU (same model and speeds) to see if that was the problem and it still did it so i got a new motherboard (same model) and again still nothing. I changed the power supply with another i have on a PC i KNOW works and its STILL the same. I even used the power switch out of the other PC as well as trying with no ram and different ram but STILL the same problem. I dont understand how that can be possible when EVER part is different from that of what is in the computer. No HDD or sata or IDE drives were connected, no cards or anything but still the thing wont start.

New/different motherboard
New/different CPU
Different Ram
Different case & power switch
NO other cards or devices

So WHY is there STILL the same problem ????????

The stats of the PC are as follows

AMD Sempron 3000+
Asus K8V-VM Motherboard
1GB DDR400 Ram

Any help would be VERY much appreciated because i am COMPLETELY stumped on what the problem is when ALL the parts are different and i cant afford to be spending any more money on the system.

Thank You

Hello! My MOBO is Asrock 980DE3/u3s3 and I had the kingston value ram ddr3 4 GB 1600mhz up until now . I recently purchased a Kingston hyper x savage 16GB DDR3 1600 mhz dual channel kit . I installed them and the monitor was in standby and would not start . The pc seemed to be working just fine , but the monitor was the issue. I tried using my old RAMs but I would get the same thing now . The weird thing is that it worked just fine with a 3rd ram memory, a kingmax 2 gb ddr 3 , 1600 mhz single channel . Now I am just getting the 3 beeps with the Hyper X Savage . All parts have warranty . Which one should I exchange ?

Monday couldn't boot up PC, had to go to system recovery and restore to previous day.

Log files show below that 4 things failed to load.

Tuesday couldn't boot up PC again.. tried to restart like 4-5 times.. Finally comes up and in the logs there's numerous things that failed to load. Running a sfc /scannow right now.

Any ideas what this could be related to or what is causing it?

A:Solved: Boot-Start or System-Start Drivers failed to load.

MpFilter is a driver associated with Microsoft Security Essentials... It looks like that was causing issues. Windows Updates had an update for it.. So I downloaded update.. Restared and it worked fine. Removed MS Security Essentials and installed Symantec istead.

Working for the time being...

Briefly:
My old system hasn't been powered on for about a year. Problem was the onboard video failed (I think)

Recently replaced it with a video card from another system (riva TNT) and bought some memory (system wouldn't boot, determined that the memory was bad)

Now the system booted but win2K wouldn't work. No problem I have XP now...

After multiple error during the xp install I finally got through it...only the computer will only boot in safe mode..

Initially thought it was a hardare conflict so I booted in safe mode with networking and systematically cleared all the yellow ??? in device manager

Still will not boot normally

Checked event log got the following error:
Event 7026: The following boot-start or system-start drivers failed to load:

Amdk7
fips

Searched the net found a M$ support about it

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306458

couldn't find amdk7.sys but managed to update the driver over the net, now its there...yet I get the same error

I did the regedit described but no folder called "parameters"

Made one....didn't work....deleted the value
added the key to my available folder....didn't work

I'm at wits end....I've been working on this (off and on) for a month

Can anyone help with this one?????
