Q: Windows explorer reverts to the desktop page

I also have Windows 2000 installed on the same pc do I need to produce a seperate hijackthis log for that?

I have an annoying issue with my laptop. The focus reverts to the desktop about once ever 20 mins or so. It is very annoying because any application has it's focus taken away and I'm reverted to the previous active window.I'm not sure if there is a virus or something causing the problem. Would someone please help me solve this?

A:Windows 7 Reverts/Jumps Back to Desktop

Not really following.  What are you meaning by that the "focus" is being taken away from the current window that you are in.  Are you using Windows Ease of Access Magnifier?  What program is it that you are in, that window ends up being taken over by another program.

Like millions of others I've always had problems w/Windows Explorer Settings. It long ago quit sorting by Name and constantly goes back to sorting by Date Modified-none of the "fixes" I've tried have worked and to make matters worse all my applications' Open Dialog boxes come up sorted by Date Modified. BUT I have given up on that.

HOWEVER, Explorer (Windows NOT IE) has now suddenly decided to revert to its own preferred settings every time I reboot. It changes the size, the place where it opens, the sorting and the details - after I have painstakingly set them (most of them, it would take all day to correct them all) back to my liking. I keep several folders on my desktop w/shortcuts to programs inside - also set to my liking. Even they are changed each time I boot the system.

I've looked at the registry Bag MRU sizes and they are set at 5000 already. Any ideas that do not involve reinstalling Windows? Or never shutting down the computer?

Thanks

Hi there, apologies for my 'username' my son initially registered for me
I have posted under 'games' as it seems I only experience my issue whilst playing games - Zuma (popcap), Mindjolt games, and daughter plays Moshi Monsters, it happens while playing this also.
It began to happen around 8wks ago with nothing at all being changed on my Acer Inspire5750, no flash update, CHROME was working well, no settings changed then during game play the screen will revert back to the last page I was on, it is so frustrating, sometimes it happens every game, sometimes it only happens only twice. If it doesn't take me back to the previous page the game will begin loading all over again like it has been refreshed. That rules out the 'back button' being responsible I think.
I am quite computer savvy but no genius but am sure I have tried everything to rectify this issue eg: uninstalled and reinstalled both Chrome + Adobe flash players, I was told Chrome use its own flash so to go to 'plugin' and try disabling one at a time (I have 3 showing) none of this worked, everything Ive tried I have put back to the way it was once it didnt work) I have cleaned cache/cookies in google, cleared history etc, done Disk Cleanup and many other bits and pieces that I have been asked to try, all to no avail.

I have attempted to play Zuma through IE instead, however the game wont even load in IE, why would this be? I have the latest flash installed - see below, ... Read more

I am running XP Pro, and I shut down every evening and restart every morning. I have the 'flower pot' wallpaper and quite a few icons on my desktop. Every 3-4 weeks, when I start up in the morning, the desktop appears with a different wallpaper and another set of icons. The only way I've found to restore my own is to completely shut down and restart--then my regular desktop appears. I have run a complete virus scan, which found nothing. Anyone know what could be causing this or if there is a quicker way to restore my settings?

My desktop background reverts back to 'none' each time I start the computer. The computer is an old HP running XP Pro. It was badly infected with malware so I suspect something is still in there.

I went through the registry and deleted every reference to 'wallpaper'. This delayed the change to the end of the boot process, but at the end of the boot process I lost the desktop background I had selected and it reverted back to none.

I have attached ntbtlog.txt so hopefully someone can detect a problem there and hijackthis.txt in case seeing what's running will be useful.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

After research, I discovered that one's antivirus program should be disabled as well as all USB-connected devices unplugged. Once this was done, Windows 10 did install, but I'm now left with having the system icon in the old-fashioned control respond when clicked sending me back to the desktop. I do not have a solution for this problem.

I have two monitors configured as one and keep all desktop items on one of them. Every disk and/ or folder when I tick sort by name-ascending the damn thing reverts to date modified-descending if I leave said disk or folder and return. I tried "Enable_Auto_Arrange_in_File_Explorer.bat" and "Reset_Folder_View_Settings_of_All_Folders_to_Default.bat" courtesy of Brink to no avail.

Is there a way to get file explorer back to default sort (by name-ascending) for all disks, folders and sub-folders at once?

It was all fine last week and I've no recollection of playing with any settings. Very frustrating.
Thank You.

I have created a VM with Windows 8.1 64 bit ISO. After the VM created at some times, File explorer and Internet Explorer links in the task bar is broken and the desktop background has became black. And no Videos, Pictures or other libraries working.

As soon as the OS installed, I automated a bat file which would do the following things.
* Disable UAC Policy
* Disable IPv6 by changing the registry.
* Delete local Admin account by logging into domain Administrator account(In AutoUnattend, I will do a auto login command, which do a auto login with domain administrator and run a bat file which will do these steps)
* Determine OS version (This to identify whether the installed OS version is higher than Windows 7.  If it is higher than Windows 7, I will invoke a auto installation of our party software)
Now, Could you please let me know why the libraries are not functioning properly and what is the reason behind broken links? I am confident that it is not happening due to the batch file or is it so?
Also, I have checked the Ease of Access Center under Control Panel.  Remove Background images check box is not selected.
Thanks, Please let me know this as soon as possible.

I have a 5 yr old IBM desk to (A30?) with windows XP professional. After logging in as Admin, my personal settings appear briefly, then the screen goes black, then Blue Screen appears, automatically running Disk Consistency check. Subsequent to disk consistency check, the system cycles back to the XP log in page. What is the likely problem? Solution? Do I have a virus? Failing hard drive? What can I do?

A:Windows XP Pro - Log in, reverts to

yes i would probably say it was a problem with the hard drive. What did you do the time before the first time it did this. you may have upset something. If you have anotherhard drive install xp on the and see if it does it on that if it does not then it is the hard drive. Try running a virus program like avg free if you dont have one or you could even do a stsyem restore to the time before it went to the blue screen

try copying your pics and videos in safe mode (to external or dvd), if the standard account is ok, I would create another admin account (in safe mode) then put your data in the new admin account..
when your satisfied the new account is OK, delete the other two..
safe mode = reboot and start tapping the f8 key...
this way you will have a backup of your data in case things go wrong later on..

others may have different advise...

good luck!

My apologies if my thread is at the wrong section. I'm new to this forum and was hoping that some people who are IT skilled can help.

After using spybot to fix some problems, explorer.exe failed to run after the welcome page. I just go into my desktop wallpaper without any icons, task bar and start menu.
I had to ctrl+alt+del and run explorer.exe through new tasks. I recovered spybot's actions and restarted the computer. It worked! However, after restarting and logging off again, the problem still occured.

I've googled around and everyone seem to solve this problem by going into regedit
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Winlogon) and setting the shell value data = explorer.exe

Mine is already =explorer.exe but it still does not work.

I've only recently noticed this, if I do ALT + TAB it will come back as the Windows XP style and it won't be the fancy Windows 7 style. In a previous thread someone stated that if you watch a lot of flash videos it will cause this issue.
Is there anyway I can stop this from happening or is there anything you guys would suggest?

A:ALT + TAB Reverts to Windows XP Style

Could be corrupt system files. Try running command prompt as administrator, then typing in
Code:
sfc /scannow
, and press enter. Let it run and post back the results

I first noticed the issues when I was Googling something. I clicked the the link and it took me to a completely different page. It does this with just about every link I click and I have to keep pushing the back button and clicking the link several times to get to the page I want.
Also, when I run Pest Patrol it fails to finish the scan everytime giving me an EAccess violation. DSS.EXE will not run either. Ad-Aware SE personal does the same thing. They all seem to lock up while they are scanning temporary internet folder. I have deleted everything in the folder and still it happens when it gets to that point.
When I am using windows explorer to search for files or look at whats on my hard drive I get an error it just says it encountered an error and needs to shut down.
As I said before, I cannot get dss.exe to run so I am posting my hijackthis log and my activescan log.
I hope you can help me.

Hello everyone, I've been stuck on trying to upgrade to Windows 10. I am currently using a OEM Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, HP Pavilion dv6 laptop.

Problem started when I notified Microsoft that I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10. I upgraded with my wife's laptop first. She also has the same laptop, but its a newer version. Windows 10 installed fine, so I decided to do mine. So I repeated the steps I did when I upgraded my wife's laptop. I clicked on the Windows icon in my task bar. It told me Windows upgrade was ready, so I clicked on continue. I let the update take its course. After 8 hours of seeing the words "working on it" I decided to exit out of the program, thinking something is wrong. I restarted my laptop and clicked on the Windows icon again. This time I did this before I went to bed. When I woke up it still had the words "working on it." So I did some research and I came across a thread that stated to use Windows update. I ran the Windows update and to my surprise Windows 10 was there (it was the only update). I clicked on update and it started to download, so I figured life was good. Windows 10 downloaded and installed. It went through the three phases (Baking up files, installing software and drivers, and then validation)<--if those are not the exact three phases I forgot, but there are three phases-->as soon as the third phase finished it states that something goes wrong and reverts back to Windows 7 Home Premium. So I commence my r... Read more

After the reboot I got a BSOD when the desktop was 1st loading. I could see my background picture for about 3-5 seconds before the BSOD. The BSOD flashed then rebooted because I had the default set to 'Automatically Restart' on errors in System Properties. Every attempt to reboot into Windows would bring this BSOD, and at the same precise time. Sometimes I would see my wallpaper and sometimes it would crash right before I could see it, but always after the 'Welcome' is on the screen with the spinning circle/hourglass.

Hello all,

I'm a computer tech at a small electronics store who has run into some pretty weird problems over the years, but this one is really stumping me and I can't seem to find anything here or anywhere else about this particular problem.

A while back I had a computer that kept reverting to Windows 8 after it had upgraded to 8.1. It was in the shop multiple times and I eventually told them that it was going to keep happening and to not install 8.1. They could try and send it away to Gateway to have it reimaged (tried using the recovery discs I created to reinstall it, same problem), but they would probably charge them for it and it likely wouldn't fix the problem. The laptop has worked fine to my knowledge since the last time I worked on it.

Fast-forward to today and I have another laptop with the exact same problem. This one I had setup for the customer, updated it to 8.1 and installed Update 1, along with setting up Classic Shell. They brought it in and said they had shut it off last night, and when they turned it on this morning it was wanting them to setup an email account on the laptop in the Mail app. Windows Live Mail was what I had setup to pull in their POP3 email account, but it and all the other programs that I had installed weren't there anymore.

What's really strange is that all of their data is still there, so it's almost like a Refresh happened somehow and took it back to 8 from 8.1 along with removing all installed programs. From what I've read it shoul... Read more

I have searched high and low and I can't believe that no one else has had this problem. Every Windows Explorer page that I open up is opening up blank. If I open My Computer there's nothing but the top bar to lower or close the screen. Also the buttons on the top bar work instantly, as if the page has just booted up totally fine. My Documents, same thing. Control Panel, same thing. They are all like that. The internet works fine. It's only Windows pages. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit.

I ran accross this site while trying to find a solution to a couple of problem... what a wonderful resource!!!

I am having the following problems. 1. Firefox has stopped working. When I click on the icon nothing happens.. no hour glass, no action. I read one of your threads and uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. Still not working. 2. Also, when I use Microsoft IE when I click on an embedded link in an email the link takes me to a Windows Explorer Window rather than to a web site. I can copy and paste the link in IE and that works. But what a pain. So I joined this forum, downloaded Hijackthis and did a scan. REsults are below. Thank you!!

It could be your firewall, and also in FireFox theres an option to block images from certain websites maybe you sometimes clicked on that by acciddent. You can go to settings and see if those sites are on the list.

Thanks for the info... It doesn't matter anymore. I don't run any Asus programs on my laptop anymore, so I can't say if it will work or not.

I have a windows server that runs a program called SageTv and acts as my VM Server. I have the server exactly the way I want it. In a perfect world I want this server to act as an appliance and never change.

I have imaged it with Acronis and can revert back if needed. But I was wondering if there is any way to have windows 7 automaticly revert back to an image on restart.

A:'Snapshoting' windows 7 so any reboot reverts to last image?

Is it a Windows Server, or is it running Windows 7?

If you are running Windows 7, look into a free program called SteadyState. I recommended this to my wife for her company to use in a computer lab. It returns the computers to a set image everytime they are rebooted, which can be scheduled. I ask the question above, because I don't know if it runs on a Windows Server OS. You mention it being a server, then you mention Windows 7.

So every time I reboot my PC it goes back to the state it was one month ago! All settings, desktop wallpaper, Firefox addons and history, Programs, files everything. To get back to normal I have to reboot! This a bit annoying because every-time I reboot I have to reboot again!

Would this have anything to do with the 4 updates my PC downloaded today? My specs are on my profile. I used to have this problem with Ubuntu but it was resolved when I updated to 10.10. Ubuntu is still on my machine but I no longer use it!

Why is this happening and how would I fix it?

Thanks

PC - ASUS K50 Notebook
OS - Windows 7 x64 Home Premium (factory installed)

Here is my issue;

I just picked up this computer recently (the other day). I was in the process of setting it up the way I like it, as well as getting the latest patches, hotfixes and updates. I noticed when I restarted after an update that my wallpaper image and color settings had reverted to the standard Win7 settings. So, I changed it again and shut the computer down and re booted it. It was good. So I let it go. But it happened again, and again etc.

I disabled/uninstalled all the pre-installed programs that I will never use.
The trial TrendMicro antivirus is still installed.
I have made no modifications to the install, other than adding a few images for wallpaper use.

I am stumped. I have never had this issue before with XP, Vista or 7.

Does anyone have any ideas?

A:[SOLVED] Windows 7 wallpaper reverts after restart

UPDATE:

I thought I had the problem licked. I disabled all startup programs except for the TrendMicro AV. The computer started with my display settings twice. I just got home from my Grandmothers house and started her up and viola! There was the blue default Windows 7 background again. Not to mention my taskbar was reset to it's default color again as well.

My next step is to uninstall TrendMicro and install AVG. Let's see if that cures the problem. Is it possible that the current AV is causing the reverting of settings? I haven't used TrendMicro since Win98, so I am not familiar with the level of control the AV exerts on the OS settings.

Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I just went through a lot of trouble to get Windows XP, Windows 7 and Grub2 (for all my Linux distros) working together. In order to do so, I followed this post on the Ubuntu forums. The part that concerns Windows 7 is Step 2.
I ran all the commands and was able to get all of the OSes working together, but now Windows 7 is using Vista's ugly green scrolling bar as the boot screen.
I've tried
Code:
bcdedit /set {current} locale en-US
and

Code:
bcdboot %WinDir% /l en-US
Neither worked.
I'd rather avoid doing a clean install, if possible.

A:Windows 7 reverts to WinVista Boot Screen

I believe it has something to do with a different bootloader being used, in this case, GRUB. I've also heard of it happening when an illegal bootloader is used for the purpose of bypassing/cracking activation in 7. Strange that in both instances that the boot screen would be Vista's screen though. May be something Microsoft overlooked.

It seems that Windows has a mind of its own. There are two things I change on Windows but in a few days it goes back to the default settings. I do not like any system sound on my computer. It annoys me whenever I click on something I get the "beep". So I go into settings and change it to "NO Sound." It's OK for a couple of day but then it reverts back to where it was. I know that I can mute the sound on the volume control, but I shouldn't have to do that because there are times I want to listen to something on youtube or some such thing. Another thing is the mouse pointer, I like it to be black so that I can see it better. I go to the settings and change it to black but in a few days, it goes back to the way it was. This always happened on Win7 or Win8. Does anyone know of a way to correct this?

A:Windows reverts back to default setting

After you make your changes for the sound and your mouse pointer you need to save it as a theme, look at Option 2 of this tutorial should show you how to do it Theme - Change or Save

We are preparing to roll out IE11 to about 12,000 desktops.  We have determined which modes (Document Modes or Enterprise Modes, in a couple of cases Compatability View) each application needs to be run in and added the appropriate settings to a central
Enterprise Mode Site List (EMSL) XML file.  For historical reasons there are various settings in the Group Policy delivered from Active Directory and in the HTML tags of application pages thart specify various modes.
Going forward we are looking for a way to conclusively identify where the settings for a page have come from.  From experimentation we have found that if you open the F12 developer tools and open the console then go to the navigation tab, click start
recording, refresh the page then click stop recording then in the console:
* If the mode was set by the Doctype tag of the page it will state in the console output that the page targets a particular mode
* If the mode is set using Group Policy then it will state in the console output that the mode was set by Group Policy
* If the mode is set using a meta X-UA tag in the page (see http://sbjoomla.org.uk/IE11/withdoctypeandmode10.html) then there will be no mention in the console output
* If the mode is set using the EMSL XML file then there will be no mention in the console output

Yeah I know.....crap explaination.  Ok. My gorgeous girlfriend has quite an old tower system and it is running windows XP home edition.  It has recently refused to load up to the desktop screen.  This is the sequence of events :-
You turn on the computer and various screens pop up with geeky information then the windows XP logo appears with the loading bar.  This then disappears and a black screen appears with various information regarding the computer. Its says
"WINDOWS DID NOT START PROPERLY SUCESSFULLY.  A RECENT HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE CHANGE MIGHT OF CAUSED THIS.

The options that are available are:-

SAFE MODE.
SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMT.

LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION WHICH MOST RECENT SETTINGS THAT WORKED.

START WINDOWS NORMALLY.

If you leave the screen and don't select any of the above the computer just keeps going round in circles and ending up at the screen above.

SAFE MODE, SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING & LAST KNOW CONFIGURATION POINT  just do the same when selected.

The SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT takes you to a colourful screen with 2 separate menus.  These options are out of my league.

Please help as this problem needs sorting and she has a lot of course work she doesn't want to lose.

It would be most appreciated.

Hi all,

First post here and not sure if this is the right forum. (crossing fingers)!

It seems that the first Monday of the month, my system resets back to the date that MS pushed out IE9 to my PC and installed. This brings back the 'old' desktop and settings.

Each time this happens, I have to reinstall my printer & set to default, reactivate various program icons, etc.

This is becoming very tiresome as today was the 3rd time this happened.

I am in hopes that there is a GURU out there that can advise on a solution to this.

Many Thanks in advance!

A:Windows 7 Home Prem. x 64 reverts to previous settings

Do you keep installing IE9 ? It won`t install unless you want it too. Change your update settings to check for updates but let me choose whether to install them. Check for updates and this time hide the IE9 update. Right click on the update to hide it. Wait and see if it reverts again.

In my opinion there is no reason to install IE9.

I've been running my laptop without a logon password for the last couple years, as it was mostly a home computer. However, I recently entered a situation where a logon password is needed, to keep at least the slightly computer illiterate from accessing my computer. I've set passwords before (easy stuff ) so I go to User accounts, entered my password twice, and figured all was good to go.

I log on with my shiny new password, everything running great, and then I go to start up Defraggler. Little message box pops up "You must have Administrator privileges to run Defraggler". "Huh, that's odd, I'm sure I logged on as myself as the Guest account is de-activated and the hidden Administrator account is still hidden" I think to myself. Hit OK, go to User Account Type, "Huh, weird, it's changed itself to Standard. No big deal, I just click this little radio button and I'm good to go." Nope, I hit Save Changes, check, and the text next to my account avatar says "Guest account". Odd, try again, no luck.

So, now I'm in trouble. Have tried everything I can think of, with no positive results. UAC is completely turned off, I'm very careful with what I run and internet is well filtered. Also, when I first got the computer I set it to log on automatically to my account at boot, could this be affecting it somehow? After free upgrades on a laptop (Windows7 Pro) and a PC (Windows 7 Ultimate), both reverted to the previous windows. Now the laptop's hard drive has failed and I have replaced and installed the OS - Win 7 Pro. The PC will not boot; I am considering formatting
the hdd in order to reinstall the OS - Win 7. Can I reinstall the upgrade to Windows 10 again for free?

Hey guys,

First time posting here and I have an odd problem. So I have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate which is 32&64 bit and I've been using this copy for years without problems. Whenever I'd install Windows it would always ask me to choose which version I'd want.

Fast forward to now, my friend would like to sell his desktop. When I put the CD in it does not prompt me to choose if I want 32 or 64 bit Ultimate, rather it installs Windows 7 Basic. Once it's done, I boot into the desktop and after being online for roughly 5min, a random green arrow pops up at the bottom right, and it installs roughly 10 malware items.

I asked my friend about what he had before and he said he had a cracked version of Windows 10 on there. Now, I've never seen this before and I have no clue if the 2 things are related. Any help?

Thanks

A:Fresh Windows 7 Ultimate reverts to Basic + Malware

Due to forum rules, you won't get any discussion of a cracked version of Windows 10 here.

Did you boot from your Ultimate CD and attempt to delete all partitions on your friend's PC?

Yes or no.

Hello. This is kinda a blast from the past question i would think but...
I am having trouble with the Windows 7 Start orb changer.Every time i boot the start orb reverts to Windows default. Not sure exactly what I am doing wrong or if perhaps I am wiping some setting each time i run CCleaner and that is the culprit. Thanks for any help you can give

I am using this version:Windows 7 Start Orb Changer: Ultimate Tool To Change Your Start Orb - door2windows

A:Windows 7 Start Orb Changer reverts each time I boot into OS

Have you tried not running CCleaner, and rebooting to see if the Orb remains? My first thought was you were somehow clearing the setting. Which option are you using to change? By patching memory, or By editing resources?

   Note
Memory Patching - Edits the start orb in memory which doesn't cause any UAC prompts
Resource Editing - Edits the start orb by replacing resources of %windir%\explorer.exe
I use an older version, and it places both an explorer_backup_w7sbc.exe and an explorer_edit_w7sbc.exe in C:\Windows. I believe the Resource editing option in your version would also modify the explorer.exe and make backups. I'm unsure how the Memory patching works? If using the Memory version, then perhaps CCleaner is the culprit, try the resource method?

My boss' desktop is broken again. Usually I can handle it myself with a couple startup tweaks and a MWB/SysClean scan but whatever he's got this time has dug its claws in pretty hard.

A couple days ago I was able to fix his internet connectivity issues with the the winsock tcp tool but that doesn't consistently work anymore (managed to get connection once today, out of ~half dozen reboots). When there was internet, he was getting a pretty frequent search redirect issue and occasional pop up. Also, the startup which yielded internet access also had the standard windows XP toolbar appearance, rather than the Windows Classic look it has whenever connectivity is blocked, when i look in the themes dropdown there are no other options. Network connection icon gets stuck acquiring ip address, never times out, repair throws an immediate "unable to acquire ip" error.

My computer at work recently started having.. issues to say the least.

It will randomly change the theme to windows classic, then pop up an error message that reads "generic host process for win32 services," and then it will disconnect me from our internal server.

This thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/virus-oth...0-internet-blocked-theme-reverts-windows.html

Seems to be the exact same problem but it has been closed with no responses.

I have run malwarebytes several times, have run TrendMicro (our company anti virus) several times, did a system restore to 4 different dates between 3 days prior to a month prior.

After a while I will begin to be redirected to advertisements if I open a search result in Google.

The problem is remedied on reboot for a short time. I tried logging on to my computer as just the computer locally without logging on to our company domain and this took care of the problem for about 3 hours then the theme reverted to classic and I had the advertisements again. However, my internet connection is not disconnect.

This problem is not occurring on any of the other 6 computers at my office.

Any idea? The only answers I have found all reference doing a system restore but they do not have the network disconnection problem. Please let me know what logs I can pull and how to pull them in order to help diagnose the problem.

Yesterday, I run a spyware check and cleaned up my Windows XP Professional system. I was able to shut down as usual; but on rebooting this morning, the computer is not showing the customary XP desktop layout and features. Instead, everything is now in the folder and tree-view layout.

That is, My Documents is now the default view --and this view is within a folder. So, there's no Start Menu; Taskbar; Quick Launch; and no usual clutter of stuff on the desktop. I am doing everything from within the Windows Explorer [tree-view] mode. How do I get back to the Windows XP default mode with it's desktop, icons, folders, taskbar, and etc.?

Yesterday morning, I was using my Acer Aspire laptop just fine. Then I turned it off, and the next time I turned it on, It came to the welcome screen, and I typed in my password, but it just came up with the color of my desktop and nothing else.

A few times if I let it sit long enough, it would finally open up to my regular desktop. Other times I just had to turn it off (& not the proper way - I just had to hold the power button until it went off) On the times when it would load regularly, the icon that tells you whether you're connected to the internet wasn't clickable, and when I went into control panel to open the networking screen, that would freeze and wouldn't close. the computer will load into Safe Mode, but not SM with networking. I tried a system restore, and that didn't work.

The only new thing I put on my computer was for an HP printer, which I did about two days ago.

Any ideas?

Hi, i'm kinda desperate atm. My laptop has this annoying habit of reverting back to windows standard/classic theme after almost every restart. I said almost as after 2/3 and sometimes even more, my aero theme correctly appeared. After another restart right after that, the problem occurs all over again.

The search function in the start menu and windows explorer also 'failed to initialize' when in the said windows standard/classic mode.

I figured that this might have something to do with my user profile as I have the 'User Profile Service service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded' problem once very recently but I've fixed it using the tutorial in this forum. The windows standard/classic theme problem had been on for quite a while back, before the user profile problem.

Before all this happened, I've had this 'C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable...' problem. I fixed that by copying all my files and folders in my C:\Users\[Username] folder to the location above and replacing all the files including desktop.ini. It is only after this that I've had the windows standard/classic theme problem.

I couldn't help but wonder if somehow my user profile has got something to do with it? Windows system restore could not fix this problem.

By the way, I'm using a modified aero theme at the moment, using TuneUp Utilities 2009 on a Vista Home Premium 32bit Acer 5920G laptop.

I would deeply appreciate any help for this poor s... Read more

I have no idea whats causing this but it seems to happen usually when either browsing a folder of videos, opening videos or something media related.

The pic is exactly what i see, this happens quite a few times a day, very annoying. havnt changed anything or installed anything so i dont know whats wrong. I have updated my Nvidia drivers to the latest available on their website but this hasnt helped.

Im having general problems with my windows media player aswell, for instance an .mp3 it could play just a couple of days ago it now says it cannot find the codec for it may be corrupted.

A:Screen reverts to tiny resolution with windows overlapped and slightly transparent

I'm not sure if it could be related to the monitor also since you checked the video drivers already. Do you have another monitor you could use or borrow? If so, try using that and see if this overlapping problem occurs. If not, there's something wrong with the monitor you are using.

Windows 7 continues to revert back to the old wireless profile despite me deleting all old wireless profiles.
Wireless adapter is Edimax EW-7128g, newest drivers for Windows 7 64bit
First set up a WEP profile the usual manner by connecting using the bottom-right wireless networking widget; "Save this connection", yes.
Works right off the bat, first time
Needed to switch to WPA on router for better security. Same router. Done. Entered new credentials using the same wireless networking widget. Works fine first time, right off the bat.
Computer enters sleep mode overnight.
Upon a wake (or restart, or cold boot) - Windows 7 reverts back to the old WEP profile.
I go into "Manage Wireless Networks" I select the profile from the list, hit DELETE. Removes it from the list. ADD new profile, supply proper WPA credentials, "Save this connection". Works fine. Manage wireless networks displays proper information (WPA security)
Restart, or reboot, or logoff. BOOM. Back to using the old WEP profile!!!
Tried this using Administrator account and user account. Same behavior.
Workaround is to change the security type / credentials or delete & create a new profile every time windows is rebooted/logoff/restart.
I cannot for the life of me figure this out. I am not using the vendor's connection utility. Windows cannot remember the new connection profile and despite me deleting the old one ... continues to revert back to it.

Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 reverts back to old wireless profile on reboot, restart, wake

Try to manually create a new network connection from the start instead of trying to mod the old profile. I did this just last week and it worked for me.

Create or modify network profiles

If the network that you want to create a profile for is not in the list, click Set up a connection or network, click Manually connect to a wireless network, click Next, and then follow the instructions. If you save the network, a profile for the network will be created and stored on your computer. To select specific authentication and security settings, click Change connection settings.

I'm running WinXP Home - I just recently reset my computer after it began working quite slowly (I thought because of system resources), and I encountered two problems upon returning to windows. First, Windows has reverted to Windows Classic Style, and Windows XP Style is not an option in the display menu. My sound drivers have apparently disappear as well. I get an "Error 88780078" every time I try to play music. All of my system restore points are gone, so system restore is out of the question. I have already run Symantec AntiVirus, Ad-Aware, and Spybot, with no problems found in any of them. Does anyone know what might be going on, and/or how to fix my problems?

I have also just discovered that I cannot enable auto-protect with Symanetic AntiVirus, and the device manager does not show any hardware at all. Thanks for any help in advance!

Yet another update - I ran network diagnostics under Windows Help tools, and I recieved WMI Errors on every test. I'm having a near panic attack!

Windows 7 > 10 with the media creation tool this time. although i have done it through the windows icon and windows update as well at least 2 times per each. no known virus or malware on it currently. cleaned recently very well. Windows 7 ran pretty good. i had trouble installing flash it causes the video card to act strangely so that was removed. There is no blue screen's due to this explorer.exe crash and when I try to load it up you have about 5-10 seconds before it disappears again. No errors or any noises. Just goes away. I have started up with every possible safe mode combination and msconfig combination trying to get something to show. Also when 10 is installing there is a text that shows up during the install and it does indicate that windows 10 is taking longer than expected.

You use the F8 key to open the Advanced Boot Options which is where the options for Safe Mode is located.

If you can boot into Safe Mode, do a System Restore.  Use a restore point dated prior to this problem.

Click on the Start orb, then type system restore, in the results above the search box click on System Restore.

Choose a restore point prior to the problem.

I'm not too sure what's going on with my computer. I logged on a few days ago and a few pop-ups from "Windows Police Pro" popped up, so I ran the usual "Malwarebytes","SuperAnti Spyware" and scanned with "IObit 360 Security". The pop ups stopped and everything was fine. A day later I log on and my windows explorer was gone along with my desktop icons and any time i try to run any of my antivirus programs they close themselves in a matter of seconds.
The only thing I can do is navigate around with task manager and open Firefox.

If you had system protection turned on, then you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully undo it to get you back.

I have done all that has been suggested so far by people online. I will tell you where I'm at.  I've used several anti-virus products, updated my video adapter drivers, and tried as many 'Fix-its' as I could get.
I finally learned you can save a lot of time and repetitive actions by running in safe mode. Particularly as far as getting my wireless adapter reconnected after accidentally deleting it.
I have def ragged, deleted, re-installed and rebooted so many times that I'm dizzy. I've removed all unnecessary programs, since I got this MSI A5000 LT from a friend, and I'll tell you it was so infected that it blue screened every time I clicked my mouse. I'm using a wireless mouse as I'm too clumsy and impatient to use the touch pad.
Sooooo....what is the problem. Microsoft doesn't seem to have a fix and by the volume of people out there with the same problem, someone must have a permanent solution. One that doesn't include buying 'the ultimate cure' software or driver helpers.
So far in the 10 days I've been aware of the problem I got it to work for 10 minutes before it stopped responding! And 'Internet Options' forget it unless I'm in safe mode.
So help me please and I will be glad to share all the neat things I've learned in the process. Things like 'hidden devices' in in Device Manager and accidentally installing Client Services where it doesn't belong and finally finding out that you  can't disable Secondary Loggon. Thanks again for being there.

Hi there!

To make a long story short, Iīve read not just this but other forums containing answers for solving this problem but yet, I havenīt been able to. Before re-formating my notebook, I would like to exhaust all possibilities.

After login I see my desktop background image, then the taskbar flashes once and thatīs it. No desktop, no taskbar, no icons. I can use the task manager to run most programs, so I tried antivirus, adremovers, etc. That didnīt help. Then I tried a system restore, but i get this message saying system restore could not load files from the points I had set as restore points.
So then, I decided that before fooling around the registry I would ask...and so I started looking for answers in different forums, but so far none has helped.

This system is running on WXP SP2, and my main windows files are hidden in an "invisible" partition, so I canīt quite access them. I got a new SP2 CD so to be able to access it, and have tried with the help of the recovery console to "expand" certain files. That didnīt help either.

Can anyone...please help?

Thanks!

A.

Hello,

I am running Windows XP Professional since March of 2007, version 5.1.2600. Service Pack 3.0 is installed. My computer is an HP Pavilion dv9000.

Lately, when I go to right-click on an icon on my Desktop, everything freezes. Or if I left-click and try to drag an icon to the Recycle Bin, the graphic image gets over there but then it freezes as a ghost image over the Bin, and everything freezes.

At first I was just having that problem on the Desktop itself, but now I notice that when I am within Windows Explorer and want to do my usual file and folder shuffling, it sometimes freezes as well.

The only way out of this has been to Ctrl-Alt-Delete and either stop Windows Explorer (which is usually Not Responding) or I have to Restart my computer if it's the Desktop that is freezing. Restarting doesn't solve the problem.

I am constantly defragging and I am very up-to-date with anti-virus (Avast! version 4.8 Home Edition) and anti-malware (Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware). I have been using the free version of Advanced SystemCare as my maintenance and cleanup tool, but I have only just now read the notice on this forum (I'm brand new here) that Registry Cleaners are more trouble than they are worth, so I won't be doing THAT again.

Can you help me to fix this?

Thank you!

Have you run RAM diagnostics? I suggest you try that first. D/L the CD based tool (ISO) and burn the image into a blank CD (see my sig for Memtest86+ link) using ImgBurn or Nero or similar program. Boot with this CD so you do not need to run the test in Windows.

Hello All,

1st post on a message board of any sort, so bear with me. I've searched this site (and others) and have found similar problems, but none that have helped me solve mine.

My Windows desktop, icons, and explorer windows keep refreshing / reloading every 10-30 seconds. Open programs / windows survive this (with the exception of Control Panel, which closes with every refresh), but I have to click back into the previously-active window to make it active again (e.g. I've had to click on this window 6 or 7 times while writing this because the cursor disappears every time explorer resets).

As background, I had this happen several months ago, just after building this system and installing Windows 8. At the time, I used the "refresh your PC" option, which fixed it, but now I'd really like to not have to reinstall of of my software.

The problem started today, after I shut down my system to move it to a new desk. I unplugged everything attached to it, moved the system, then plugged everything back in as it had been previously. After starting the system, I noticed the refreshing because the majority of my icons mysteriously moved to my secondary display. Despite un-checking "Auto arrange icons," they kept doing this with every refresh, then stopped moving, though the desktop still refreshes as I mentioned above.

What I've tried so far:

I have been struggling along with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on a new i7 machine for about a year and have a habit of creating shortcuts on my Desktops leading to things like folders, documents, spreadsheets, pictures to which I expect to want quick access. I normally access them by opening Windows Explorer and clicking on the word "Desktop" in the left pane which then gives me a A - Z list, in the right pane, of everything on my Desktop.
Today I spent several hours on MS Publisher trying to see if I could print background colour all the way to all edges of the pages in a A5 booklet card - without success.
My problem is that when I now open Windows Explorer I can no longer see Desktop listed in the left pane. I know I can access my needed items by going to C:\ > Users > MyName and clicking on "Desktop" but that is a laborious process. I have done a System Restore to a point yesterday when I know I could find "Desktop" in the normal way in Windows Explorer.
Can anyone please tell me how make the link to Desktop once again visible in the left pane of my Windows Explorer ?
I am 84 years of age and a bit slow with too much technicality so a detailed explanation would be much appreciated, thanks.

A:Desktop missing from Windows Explorer

Hi Beejay,

If you right-click in the space shown in the image below, and then select Show all folders from the context menu that appears when you right-click, the Desktop icon should re-appear.

Let us know if that works for you.

Regards,
Golden

I tried searching for this topic but I didn't find anything, though it may be that I didn't look carefully enough. What's happening is that Windows Explorer has recently been making my desktop icons disappear, and in some cases my taskbar as well. When I open the program, particularly when I have removable media connected, my desktop icons revert to the placeholder image, and gradually the correct images return to each. It can take some time for all the icons to return to normal. Additionally, when I close Windows Explorer, the desktop icons vanish altogether, and wherever they go, the take the taskbar with them. The wallpaper remains completely untouched. Any open windows I have will remain onscreen and responsive, infact while I'm waiting for the return of my taskbar I can browse the Web to pass the time. But if I minimize a window that's it until the return of my taskbar, which usually occurs within 5 minutes or less, along with the gradual return of all the icons as described above. My system scans clean for malware, and Norton's WinDoctor doesn't find anything. Any suggestions? This is, at the very least, inconvenient, if not downright worrisome. I'd feel better if I knew whether it was even normal.

I am working on a Gateway laptop that has Windows XP Home Edition SP3. The symptoms are similar to what a lot of others are reporting. The first problem noticed on boot is that there is no desktop or icons displayed. There are not task bars open either. The only way to work on this computer is through the use of the new task function in task manager so please keep this in mind. The second problem shows up when trying to use explorer.exe from New Task. I was getting the following message: "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. you may not have appropriate permissions to access the item". I have run Malwarebyte's Antimalware, VIPRERescue, RootRepeal, Sophos Anti-Rootkit, and Win32kDiag. I attached several logs to help with the diagnosis. After all these I ended up having to use the recovery console to expand userinit.exe to be able to solve the log on/log off problem. I currently have gotten my desktop picture back but not the task bars or icons and explorer will still not work. I am getting a windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close error now. Thanks in advance. I have an Acer Aspire laptop running Vista with an Intel Celeron, all less than a year old. Recently, when I try to boot my computer, it is taking a long time at the green progress bar screen and then again at the welcome screen. When I get to the desktop, there's a black screen instead of a desktop background, and nothing will load. No taskbar, application tray, no icons, nothing. Can't use start menu, anytime I move the mouse to that vicinity I get the little blue circle. None of the applications that used to boot come up, zip. The only, literally only thing, I am being allowed to do is to use ctrl/alt/delete. Many restarts and log-offs have done nothing. I have tried cancelling and then reloading explorer.exe in task manager, and it does the same thing. I have run various virus scans and spybot scans and nothing has changed, no problems found. I have tried system restore, but when I tried it failed, and then when I went to try again it had somehow erased all my restore points. The computer did this a week ago and system restore fixed it and it seemed fine restarting/booting since then, but now the problem is back. I didn't even restart, just came downstairs today to find, coming back from the screensaver, that it was at this screen from when the updater must have restarted the computer! As I said, there was a Windows Update last night, could that have caused this? Again, all the Windows diagnostic tools (chkdsk, memory scan, startup problems scan) have found nothing. I... Read more

In a Dell notebook, o/s Windows 8.1, from an icon in the Desktop or in the Quick Access area IE opens behind the Desktop. The tabs for MSN and another user specific opening page can be seen above the Desktop window. I could not find a way to alter this strange behaviour or find its cause.

The laptop is new and has displayed this problem previously and returned to normal behaviour without input from the owner/user. I was assisting the him when the problem recurred after a restart following the installation of TeamViewer and Malwarebytes AntiMalware.

Can anyone suggest a solution please?

Malcolm

A:Windows 8.1 - Internet Explorer hidden by Desktop

Hello Malcolm,

It seems like it may be offscreen. If so, you should be able to drag it back down using the method in the tutorial below.

Hope this helps,

Hi, I'm running windows xp home edition and cannont get the process explorer.exe to stay open.
What happens is that it starts on startup and I can see my desktop icons and everything, then give it five seconds or so, and it closes.

I have stopped system restore, restarted in safe mode and ran norton av 2005 full system check, and adaware. Norton AV 2005 found nothing whilst adaware found some stuff
From what i understand, explorer.exe runs the desktop and manages files. I now manage the computer from task manager and through workarounds.
Lately I must have had a either a virus, malware or something installed, as Norton does pop up saying it has found a trojan/virus called downloader and says it has deleted them.
Any help? Ideally I'd like to keep explorer open.

A:Explorer.exe Won't Stay Open, No Desktop Windows Xp

Norton does pop up saying it has found a trojan/virus called downloader and says it has deleted them. What was the name of this Trojan? Did Norton provide a specific file name associated with it and a location?Try running the the System File Checker (SFC) to scan all protected files to verify their versions. If SFC discovers that a critical system file has been damaged, altered or missing, it restores the correct version of the file from the cache folder. You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run sfc and it may ask you to insert your XP Installation CD so have it available.Use Task Manager > New Task... and type: sfc /scannowMake sure that you include a space between the c and /. This command will initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files, verify their integrity, and replace any problem files.

Hi I have a friend I am trying to help and so far nothing has worked. He ended a task (tree) in Task Manager (he is not even sure which task it was.. something using all his memory... but I suppose it was explorer.exe) and now he only gets a wallpaper screen when he logs in. There are NO icons.. NO task bar.. NO right click...etc. IN fact the ONLY thing he can do is bring up Task Manager and try things from there. Here is a list of things other people have suggested and we have tried. Task manager is only thing we could access and we tried to switch to system restore, and explorer.exe. Neither of them worked. We could use the command prompt, but I am not very knowledgeable about working from DOS... but we were able to run sfc /scannow twice but it appears it did not do anything. We even tried to create another user account and when we logged in with it the screen was just blue..and still no icons or task bar. Also, when browsing in Task Manager we could not find any windows folders. The only folder that appeared under C:/WINDOWS was the System32 folder. So, we were unable to find the explorer.exe file to try and restore. We saw from command prompt that explorer.exe was in the windows directory but have no idea how to get it working. He has a partially installed/deleted corrupt version of windows on his computer, so we tried both windows and windows2 to make sure we were in the right one. We did what was suggested in a couple of forums: We downloaded a .vbs ... Read more

this started happening yesterday, and i can't quite isolate the problem. however here is what would happen to replicate the problem.

i would browsing through a directory on my desktop when for some unexplained reason explorer would hang. normally, when the application hangs, if you attempt to close explorer, it'll throw a not responding message to the user, allowing you to wait or force close. however in these cases (it's happened twice), it doesn't. after 15 seconds of waiting after i click the X, it closes, closes all other instances of windows explorer, and removes all of my desktop icons.

now, i can reopen explorer just fine afterwards, but clicking on the desktop folder, makes explorer take for ever to load, and if it does load (the second time it didn't) the icons re appear and then everything goes back to normal.

As for Virii, i had the system do a deep clean during boot about 5 days ago, and besides returning that one of my 7ziped rom files i had downloaded from the internet as par of a NES rom package (i think it was Tecmo Bowl(NTSC)) as a decompression bomb (which i deleted as soon as i had logged back in), their have been no other virus notifications.

event viewer has the following for the two hangs:

The program explorer.exe version 6.2.9200.16433 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

A:Windows Explorer Hangs, Causes desktop issues.

Still having the problem?

If not: good work.
If yes: read on.

If the trouble with Explorer only happens in a particular folder, try temporarily moving the contents of the folder to a different location, and then moving them back again (if that doesn't do it right away, you can also delete the original folder while it is empty, and create a new folder with the same name, place it in the original location, and fill it again with the original files) . Sounds weird, yes, but this procedure can help when some little file inside a folder has somehow gotten its permissions tripped up a bit.

Best of luck,
. . . Gary

Hi Guys,

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop full Windows 7 and an Acer Aspire Netbook full Windows 7. On the Netbook in Windows Explorer I see the option for "show desktop" in the Favorites section by default. On my Toshiba I don't see it. I did add a quick launch to my start bar on the Toshiba and I can't drag the show desktop from it over to the favorites in Windows Explorer.

I did find on this site the hot key "windows + d" shows the desktop but I would like to put show desktop in my Favorites also.

I just engaged in this crusade today so when I figure it out I'll post my solution. Although I expect that one of you guys will have the answer. Cuz you cool like that.

Thanks

A:Show Desktop in Favorites in Windows Explorer

Look at that I solved my own problem in like 2 minutes.

I selected and right clicked Favorites in Windows Explorer.

In the pop-up I clicked "Restore Favorite links" and the desktop link came back.

Thanks guys.
