Start Menu Changed After Explorer.exe Process Ended

Q: Start Menu Changed After Explorer.exe Process Ended

My friend played a joke on me by setting a screen shot of my desktop as my background and ending the explorer.exe process. I just opened control panel and started a new explorer.exe process but when i did the start menu reverted to a windows 98-ish theme. I've tried many things to get it back to the vista style, and I have found nothing that works. I've had this done to me a couple of times when I used XP on my desktop and everything worked fine. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

How can one tell if AAWService.exe is the Lavasoft process or a virus masquerading as a legitimate process?

I can not find AdAware in the MSCONFIG/Startup or SERVICES.MSC lists. Does this mean that the process in Task manager is a rogue? If I try to end the process it just returns automatically.

I have looked in the Registry it is not set up in any RUN catagory. Hey all, after using AlienwareGUI for a while to swap to a theme I uninstalled it after a while. The result made the IE icon on the start menu the IE6 icon. I've gone to the quick launch IE icon and changing that icon back to IE7 but it still didn't fix the start menu one. Anyone know how to get it back?

And yeah, doesn't look like much of a problem but I go nuts about it. Probably because im a perfectionist and every other IE icon has the IE7 one. <_<

Previously when I would click on the start button, the menu that appeared would reach about half way up the screen. Today, however, it goes all the way to the top of the screen. I checked the buttons properties and all there is as it has always been plus the menu has the same amount of icons on it as usual. Also, the "Most Used Programs" part of the menu is blank after every reboot.

Can anyone shed some light as to what is going on?

Cheers.

Hiya guys,
I've just done a fresh install of Windows 10 on a new build.
I noticed there are a couple of bits I can't seem to get back to how they were before, last time it was the free upgrade from win7, this time it was a clean install via windows 10 media creation tool.

I've attached a screenshot of how my start menu looks now, before reinstalling I had the power, settings and file explorer at the bottom of the start menu as a list, along with 'all apps', which would open the A-Z list of apps.
As you can see now, the power etc are now icons on the left, with all the apps as a permanent presence next to them.

It's not a huge issue, but something that's frustrating me that I can't figure out how to change it back, I don't launch apps from the A-Z so i'd rather not have it there.

Has this changed in a recent update or something? My PC was without internet for a few months until today so maybe I missed a change.

I have checked and I have the latest build of windows.

Thanks, Mark.

I thought I'd change my start up menu so not so many programs opened at start up. Thinking this would be easy I just stopped a few programs that I thought would speed up my start up. I did that thinking that it was easy!!
Now I have lost all programs and internet connection from the laptop and can't do anything with it.
Questions: Do I need to do something easy to bring it back (I tried system restore ) It doesn't have anything I can find to restore it to.
Question: Would I need to reload windows 7? or can I do it an easier way.

Hello everyone.
Today I tried Windows 10... it's not bad at all but for the moment I prefer to stick with Windows 7.
So I downgraded and everything is fine a part from a small detail in the start menu...

As you can see my Windows 7 is in Italian but there are three entries that are in English.
Documents-Pictures-Music instead of Documenti-Immagini-Musica.
All the settings in control panel are on "Italian" so I don't know why this happened.

Any way to fix it?

Thanks.

A:Ended process in task manager and loss use of desktop

Are you XP or Vista
Either way, use Process Explorer instead
Install Process Explorer
Click Options and set Hide when Minimized, Allow Only One Instance, Confirm Kill, CPU History in Tray Icon
btw. when it's minimized, note the red and green waves through its system tray icon
Green indicates total CPU usage
Red indicates the process using most the most the CPU time
Hover cursor over the icon to get on CPU usage and who using most of it
Add process explorer to your startups with argument /t and it will start minimized

As to what happened earlier, If you killed Explorer you killed the process which is the parent of processes runnning on your desktop. !

In PE, click column Process to change views
- Alpha sort (A-Z)
- Alpha sort (Z-A)
- Tree view . Shows relationship between processes (parent child). In Tree View
=== > All the processes listed prior to explorer.exe was started during boot / startup

I've getting occasional BSOD lately. They sometime occur only a day a part, sometimes a week. It started I'd say a month or so ago, which was also couple weeks after I had reinstalled Windows 7, which I did after an uninstall of Office 2013 seemed to have not completed correctly, and had also never gotten most of the preinstalled junk of this laptop anyways. I think I installed all the necessary drivers. All hardware functions correctly and nothing is missing in Device Manager.

Every time it is the same message "A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly ended". So far I have ran scans with MSE, MBAM Pro, and WDO, which have found no signs of viruses or other malware. I have run sfc /scannow, checkdisk and every scan that Seatools has. No problems have been detected with the harddrive, sfc found no integrity errors. Last night I had memtest86+ running off of a usb drive run for 7 passes. No errors were found. I went through Event Viewer and found nothing that seemed related. I checked and all my drivers seem to be up to date.

I hope I included all necessary information. My system specs are up to date. The three dumps I have are attached below. I had deleted the older ones with ccleaner without thinking. If I left out anything, let me know. Its been a while, since I've done much troubleshooting on a computer, so I might be overlooking something.

Hi folks,

I recently ran into frustration trying to save or make new any files in the root C:\ directory, with Windows7 Home Premium being set by default, of course, to not allow this. I did a cursory skim of some information online about changing these settings, and made some changes a bit hastily. Specifically, for the C:\ drive I took ownership of every subdirectory and gave my account full permissions under security. Annoyingly, this didn't fix the original issue of saving to that drive (which I no longer care about anyway), and it caused (at least) two new problems. Now my start menu has far fewer listings than it used to have; I imagine some programs were listed in it based on the previous permissions. I tried to do a system recovery, both through the OS and with a recovery disc, and that does not work either. It lists restore points, but after restarting it says that the restore was unable to complete.

So, my questions are thus:

Can I fix the permissions and ownership of just the restore directory and program components, enough to run one, and revert?

Or, failing that, is there a way to undo recent ownership changes made? I poked around in the Event Viewer, but it's not laid out very clearly.

It's ok if it's not possible or easy to do it this way; I can grab just my vital files and completely reinstall Windows if it's absolutely necessary, but it seems excessive. I doubt the system restore files are corrupted. More, let's say, confuse... Read more

Hi,
I need yr help desperately.
What was the problem: lately whenever I opened MSIE 6 on my comp new web site pop-up window appeared from time to time and start page appeared different to the one I chosen before.

But before my SYS ADMIN came to help it had happened that I ended IEXPLORE.EXE process via task manager. Then everything looked ok, I worked for some time and switched off the computer.
Next morning when I switched it on, after loading of desk top screen the Windows system message popped up saying that “Internet Explorer has an error and will be closed”. Then the screen “refreshes” and a new Windows message pops up, and so on every 5 seconds. And you cannot stop it.
So it seemed that computer would not load properly because I ended iexplore.exe the night before.
Can it be possible? And what can be done?
The reason for web sites pop-ups was Trojan as we found out later. I we cured it, but we do not know what to do with the above.

Than you very much for yr advice.

Last night, system running fine. Woke this morning to login screen, aka MS sent an update. Boot up but the start menu is stuck. This has happened before, a simple reboot usually fixes this and its good going forward. Not this time, restart it might work but will eventually stop again. Looking at task manager I have Service Host: DCOM Server Process Launcher (6) taking up 26-30% utilization. Boot into safe mode and everything is fine however.

I don't know what was in last nights update but it appears to have really screwed up my system. The only thing I added yesterday was CPUID CPU-Z, I really don't think that is the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, Would someone please be able to help me. I recently got my computer back after being repaired and it was on a small resoultion under the 1000's. I bought a new screen to go with it and just turned it on. I went to display settings and changed resoultion to 1920x1080 and now its just a big blank stretched wallpaper with no icons, task menu/bar or start menu. I also can't click or right click thus I have no way to change this back. I've tried going into normal safe mode and display settings changed it to the smallest, restarted the computer and its doing the exact same thing. Hi again guys,

I shut down my PC last night, fine, everything was in working order, booted this morning to send some work to college and it took my start menu 30 seconds to load, then 30 seconds to load everything on the list in "All Programs" and then froze when I selected a file. I thought this was a bit weird so I decided to try explorer too, I waited for the start menu to load again and clicked "My Computer" - low and behold, the same thing happened, it lagged for about a minute and then loaded my disk drives etc...

I've run a virus scan with AVG, used Spybot S&D, Defragged with SmartDefrag, used CCleaner, Disk Cleanup, and chkdsk while also performing a diagnosis boot, but as of yet, have found nothing, & I've also used HD tune to check if my disks are faulty but they're all working fine, I have noooo idea what to do next as I don't want to re-install 7 as I'm right near my exams and trying to use my PC to revise and do work, apart from the fact that I've already had to re-install anyways.

Do you need any more info / can anyone help shed any more light on this situation?

Thanks!
Daniel

So does anyone have any programs that will allow the shell transfer of explorer.exe? This is dangerous when talking about Windows Shell.

A:Just add Explorer.exe (Start Menu for 8)

Someone JUST posted something about doing just that... I didn't subscribe to it though so it's lost in the sea of the 8 forums. Can try a few searches to locate it.

It worked with some caviates. Since MS removed a lot of functionality from being usable by the explorer shell, there are several apps you need to create your own shortcuts to instead of using the built in ones.

THAT I think is going a little too far. It so screws with the system as a whole, might as well stay on the sane and stable 7. Adding a third party start orb makes complete sense though and is usually a lot less traumatic to the system.

[Edit]Looked a bit and couldn't find it, it was a link to an off site web page though, maybe google for it instead?[/edit]

Greetings, I found multiple topics relating toa zeroaccess rootkit virus, downloaded the tools and found them extremely helpful. Sadly I couldn't run tdsskiller any way I named it or downloaded it. Last week in walmart my wife suggested avast system suite which said it deleted the zeroaccess rootkit and scanning with rkill comes clean of infection, malware bytes shows clean, sas showed 79 adware tracking cookies which I delete every time. Before hand I had firewall issues, thanks to Mcafee preinstalled and controlling it...constantly, even after my subscription ended, which probably started all this. One day I noticed windows couldn't finish an essential update, thought nothing of it and just kept on. Thanks in advance for looking into my situation. I've had my rig now for 8 months and never had any big problems. Just today I started having problems with my start menu locking up when I would try to run things from it. I would have to end the explorer process from the task manager and run a new one. Also, i've noticed that certain programs will not start up but will show up as processes in task manager. I hope this can be resolved without a complete overhaul of Windows. Thanks!

*As a note, i do not get these problems when running my computer in safemode. Task bar does not lockup/freeze and applications will open*

My title basically explains the problem. My start menu will open and i can run programs from it but after i run the program the start menu stays up and is unusable until i restart explorer. It's not just that though it's also my windows media player and AOL freezes when i connect. I figured it was a virus but I've scanned and scanned and nothing seems to work any help would be appreciated.

Right clicking, say "Computer" on the start menu, or right-clicking an item that came up from a search (say I searched for CMD and right-clicked it) will causes Explorer to freeze indefinitely. By freeze, I mean it's completely ignoring click
events. Explorer does not grey out or list as unresponsive. Right-clicking otherwise is normal and quick (virtually no 3rd party additions). I can also right-click other parts of the Start Menu, just not the two listed above.

I've installed office 2016 on my desktop, and the icons on the start menu are just blank icons. They have the background colors for each app, but the actual program icon is not there. i've already tried reinstalling the entire suite, running a number of programs, etc. but nothing has worked so far.

my other current issue is when I restart explore the start menu and desktop is completely unresponsive, and I have to restart the computer to fix the issue.

A:Windows explorer and start menu

Hi, I believe I've seen posts here about Office icons, so you may want to search. I don't use it so can't comment on that point, sorry.

Many people experience issues with the Win 10 start menu, but not quite as you're reporting.

I suggest you start a process of elimination to check if any installed program is causing a conflict.
1. Does the same happen in Safe Mode?
If so, it's most likely Windows corruption or corruption of your user profile.
Try creating a new user account and see if that works.
2. If not, try a clean boot

Hello vista2020

At the desktop press
CTRL + ALT + DEL
Click "Start Task Manager"
File/New task (Run) and type in
explorer.exe
OK

Hopefully this will bring back your Start Menu etc.

If it disappears again you could have some type of malware so I think you should post a HijackThis log. The experts on the forum there will clean it all up for you

I've seen many threads here describing explorer.exe crashes. Some ppl have it when opening folders with particular file types, when dragging files, when opening network center etc. Some cen be remedied by disabling DEP, some have other solutions and some remain.

But I've this particuar one. When I open start menu and just POINT on control panel or any other item on the right (black) side of the menu, explorer.exe occasionaly crashes, but not always.

I've spent a whole day trying to get rid of this and believe it or not, it stopped crashing by doing the following - in the properties of taskbar i just changed menu icons to be small instead of large. That's it. I know it sounds strange, but it works for me. I've tried to get it down again many times, but it haven't crashed since.

So, if anyone is having the same problem, try to do it, it may help.

I will try do do some other "crash tests" when i get home from work, because i need to be sure.

In the end, it can also be just some coincidence, but i don't of anything else i changed to cause this coincidence, so i will post to confirm or say that it crashed again.

UPDATE:
OK, i tried it hard, believe me, but it doesn't crash on me! So, I assume it works

A:Start menu - explorer.exe problem fixed?

I tried this and it doesn't work so it appears that the answer was something you did while you were trying to fix it and/or it just temporarily stopped. At any rate this problem for me comes and goes as it likes. It seems something hasn't fully prepared itself before it is expecting text. It almost certainly is a bug in the indexing of the files that you are searching.

I still haven't found the fix for this but fortunately it is only a fraction of the time I am using vista that this bug rears its ugly face.

So, I'm trying to install a theme (charleston2378's deviantART gallery) for my computer, and I think I'm mostly there. I've replaced all of the .dll files and applied the theme in the Personalization window. The only thing left is my Explorer and my Start Menu. It's supposed to look like the first, dark image, but instead it's still the second, lighter one. I don't know what to try to get the colors to look right and match the theme. If anyone can give me some suggestions or anything it would be much appreciated.

I have been having an issue with Windows Explorer going completely blank on me. When this happens, the start menu does the same thing. There will be a blank white box where 'All Programs' is supposed to be located but it is still clickable however. All the folders in All Programs do show but no files show in them until I mouse over them and they appear one-by-one as I move the mouse. I found that out when trying to get to where I can post a screenshot of the problem. This files showing up upon mouse-over glitch also occurs in all Windows Explorer folders as well. A search on a few different search engines brings up only really old Windows 95 results including an old Microsoft KB article. I did not see any information regarding this problem on Windows 7.

AVG Internet Security 2015 does not find any viruses or anything and I ran an SFC/scannow and it did not find any problems. But there obviously is a problem.

Hi,

I have a strange problem on workstations running XP Professional SP1.

When a user uses Explorer or navigates to a folder using My Computer the Users Last Name is removed from the top of the start menu.

The same thing happens when they use Open in any MS Office application.

Example: Logged on as John Smith, uses Explorer; Logged on name changes to John

If a User connects to a Mapped drive on our NT Server (SP6a)there is also network activitity (monitored in Task manager, Networking Tab) after they highlight a file inside a folder. The file name also flashes in the status bar at a rate that matches the monitored network activity.

I have ran Startuplist and HijackThis and there is nothing unusual that I can see. Spybot does not find any spyware. Norton Antivirus 2003 scans detect not any viruses. I have run TDS-3 and it did not detect anything unusual either.

Our Windows 2000 workstations appear to work.

I would appreciate any suggestions or idea's.

Please disreguard any spelling errors.

Thanks,

Roger

Hello all,

I've been abroad for a while, only to come back home and find my roommates have turned my PC into an - ahem - porno box. It looks pretty ugly, and there are alot of programs I'm unsure about running on the system.

The most obvious problem is that Win. explorer keeps crashing, and I have no GUI or access to the start menu. This seems to be pretty common judging by some of the threads I've read through? I thought it might be a problem with something called 'vundo', but the vundo checkers I have DL'd don't seem to identify it. I've also ran Clamwin and Bitdefender, and they come up clean.

I've ran DSS and here is the log that it gave me. If someone sees something that looks obviously faulty, please let me know.

Thanks for your time!

Hi,

I bought new computer yesterday and I don`t like the start menu so I changed it to the XP version (after looking it up on the Internet).

But when I should've left well enough alone, the menu was changed, and several hours later, I'm trying to see what I did wrong.
1. My first question is how do I change start menu to the XP version?

2. How do you change the arrows in Windows Explorer to the + sign?

3. How to change their rotating circle back (that took the place of the hour glass)?

4. I don't like Windows live Mail. Is there an alternative besides using a web based e-mail like Yahoo!? [I used to use Outlook express]
Thank you in advance for the help. I have looked up these things online but I've been on the computer too much in the last 24 hours.

I have windows XP home edition running on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, and have recently done a windows repair, which set me back to service pack one. So I went to the site and downloaded all of the necessary updates, installed, and then went back a second time and did it again and installed SP2. I then received the BSOD when I restarted after SP2. So I started up using F8 to boot into the most recent configuration that worked, and there was no taskbar or start menu. I tried starting up normally, and it started up, but took forever loading (the screen that says loading your settings), and the taskbar is still not there, neither is the start menu. This is a real inconvienance, (for now I am using Alt+Tab to switch programs, and Ctrl+R does nothing-have to use the task manager to run stuff) and running explorer.exe did absolutely nothing. I greatly appreciate any help that you guys can give me.

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

I am having an issue with the tart menu and desktop icons not showing up. I am running Windows XP. Explorer.exe is also not showing in the Windows Task Manager.

I ran MalwareBytes and followed the instructions and it found a few items and cleared them out. The obvious one that might contribute to the problem was:

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\StartMenuLogOff (Hijack.StartMenu) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

It said the items were deleted successfully and I rebooted my system, but there still is no icons or start menu. I ran HijackThis for a report and it said "For some reason your system denie access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this." Then it gave instructions on how to remove the file manually - it finished the scan and this is the report...

I just managed to get rid of the xp internet security virus using the methods on here. Problem now is if I try to open internet explorer from the start menu it brings up a menu asking me to choose the program to use to run it. I choose internet explorer from the list and it briefly pops up then disappears and takes me to c:\documents and settings\(username) instead. I can run internet explorer from the icon on the desktop no problem so it not a major issue more like an inconvenience. Anybody got any ideas how to sort this?

Edit: Tried messing about a bit and it works if I right-click and choose 'browse without add-ons' but not simply 'browse the internet'. Strange one.

Final edit: Sorted it. I removed it from the start menu then went to program files>internet explorer, right clicked on the ie icon and selected pin to start menu. Seems to have sorted the issue.

Right click on the shortcut and select Properties. In the Target field you should have something like : "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

When XP SP2 installed on work PC, it takes 15 mins for desktop icons to appear after bootup, and taskbar, start menu, and explorer windows have about a 4-min response time to each mouse click. Uninstalled SP2 and things back 2 normal. Some weeks later SP2 was reinstalled again by LAN (this is my work PC). same thing happened.
Log shows some errors about Server {xxxxx} not registering with Dcom within timeout, Com+ Explorer problems, unable to generate RSOP. (Server {xxxxx} error was occurring every 4 mins for the first 2 days of problem, but now hardly at all, tho I haven't done anything as far as I know)
When I go into Component services on administrative tools and click on the "computers" folder, component services immediately bombs out, and an error appears in log that Windows detected some instability etc. Log also shows errors about being unable to access WMI, and when I try to gather info in WMI I get a seemingly eternal delay.

I am not able to open the file explorer through the option on the start menu, or by clicking on the file explorer pinned to the task bar. When I click the pinned file explorer the window that pops up says "Windows cannot find ''. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I am able to navigate through to my files by going to the start menu file explorer's jump list (clicking the arrow to the right of the file explorer option on the start menu). All of these issues began after I had been messing around with custom themes. I ran UltraUXThemePatcher_3.0.4 and then I changed the following files (themeui.dll,uxinit.dll, and uxtheme.dll). Next, I ran a registry editor file that made it so I can take ownership via right click. I also followed these steps in this article: [Windows 10 Tip] Remove Icons from Navigation Pane of This PC - AskVG
up to the end of "Part 2: Remove Quick Access Icon From Navigation Pane of This PC".
The last thing I did was install a custom icon pack.

If this was not too long ago, and if you do create restore points in regular basis, I would suggest that you do a system restore.

Hi All,

Easy question, just don't know the answer.

I upgraded my IE to version 7. After rebooting, I lost my logo from my start menu. The picture included with this msg explains it all.

I disabled it, re-enabled it, nada. I didn't try to uninstall and reinstall yet, and of course, just putting the IE shortcut from the All Programs works. It's just really bugging me. I want the real deal.

Any ideas?

Whenever I click the start menu, it causes explorer to return an error message and closes all open windows. I can't access the program files or any of the other files normally found there. If I log on as "Administrator" it works fine. How can I correct this? I have found similar, but not excact problems in the Microsoft Knowledge Base; one involving Internet Explorer 6.0 , which I tried, but the only similarity is the error message.

Since the Admin profile works, I would suggest creating a new user for yourself and see if the problem persists in the new profile. You need to log on as Admin to create the new user.

The Windows 7 Start menu, right pane, has a link to Favorites, which is associated with Internet Explorer. But there is another "Favorites" in Windows 7 which is a major item in the Windows Explorer navigation pane where the user may locate a shortcut to a frequently used folder. Is it possible to set a link to this Folder from the Start menu, similar to the link to Documents, Pictures, Music, etc which link to the named folder in the Libraries folder?

I have two problems with Vista:

1) Everytime I hit the Vista orb and open up the start menu (the one with the search bar on the bottom, not the old one), if I click on Control Panel (which is a menu, aka it has an arrow), as soon as I open up the menu, Windows Explorer crashes and I have to restart the explorer.exe process. This especially sucks because everytime you do this it rearranges your Quick Launch Bar setup and also disables DreamScene.

- I have disabled all add-ons on IE7. Didn't work.
- I have disabled all third-party shells using shexview. Didn't work.
- I've cleaned the registry with CCleaner. Didn't work.
- I ran a complete scan with Windows Live OneCare and it reported no infected files. Still, no success.

Anyone know a fix? I'm desperate.

Also, another problem with Vista I have is that if I open up the start menu and click on Documents (which has an arrow), and then click on Music (also a menu with an arrow), the Music folder shows a transparent box that doesn't show the other music submenus. Is there a fix for that?

Thanks.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, Windows Explorer does also occasionally crash when browsing through it.

Hi,I have bad news for you From your log, I can see it is a lost case - game over situation already. It's clearly here that you are dealing with a File infector, and I'm pretty sure it's Virut, this on top of the other nasty malware you are dealing with. A format and reinstall is the fastest and especially the safest solution. You may want to read this why:Virut and other File infectors - Throwing in the Towel? So, I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc.. Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.Read here for instructions how to format and reinstall Windows: http://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/adva...all-format.html

Hi..

I am JayPeez and I am having a problem with the programs in my Start Menu. It all started when I open a web page file (which is in Mozilla and is stored in my flash drive) with Internet Explorer. The next thing I know is that all my file folders in my flash drive have an Internet explorer extension so their icon appears to that of the Internet explorer. The same thing happens to all my programs in my Start menu. Whenever I want to open a program, the Internet explorer browser will be displayed so I was not able to open the program I want. The programs can only be opened appropriately when I click the Safe Run. However, I still can open my programs by accessing it through its file location and in there I can open it successfully. However, it is tiring to do so. And even I was able to open it right, its icon that is displayed in my task bar is still that of Internet explorer.

I would be very grateful if anyone can help me with this problem. I have tried everything with the Control Panel and Help and Support, yet I still was not able to solve it.

Here's the whole story. First system specs.
2.4b p4

ati 9500
soundblaster platinumex
xp pro

The other day my system just started randomly rebooting itself. After much aggravation, and a new power supply, I figured out that one of the corsair ramsticks was the culprit. removed the bad stick, and windows booted fine. Ram has since been completely replaced with new modules. no program icons on the desktop or startup menu.

Also it said i was missing a bunch of dll files, so i did a repair installation of xp. dll problems fixed, still no program icons.

deleted shelliconcache, rebooted, still no program icons, and shelliconcache didn't rebuild itself (still hasn't after several reboots)

downloaded tweakui, repaired icons, still no program icons.

renamed iconcache.db to iconcache.old, rebooted. still no program icons, but the file did rebuild itself, and was about 15k smaller.

repaired explorer, still no icons.

I can't find anymore information on this. Anybody have any ideas? The program icons show up in other parts of windows, like the add remove programs window. Just not on desktop, start menu, or in windows explorer. Any help would be much appreciated.

I?ve been fighting this issue for 2 weeks. Can not say anything in particular caused it, had not installed anything major or new, just one day when I re-started the machine the entire desktop was gone. No icons, taskbar, start menu, etc. Also, rt. click on the desktop does nothing. Windows File Explorer does not work either

Machine ? Dell Inspiron E1705, 4GB Ram, 25GB free HDD space, Win XP Pro SP3

What Works? Task Mgr, File Explorer alternative (Free Commander). Am able to execute pgms. and apps using these. Essentially it seems that all else works except for explorer.exe and assoc. features.

Other symptoms, things I?ve tried, etc:

1. Tried executing explorer.exe but fails, doesn?t start.
2. In safe mode, everything works! Desktop, Start Menu, File Explorer, etc.
3. Desktop folders for all users exist with shortcuts
4. Replaced explorer.exe from a another XP SP3 machine, did not fix the problem.
5. Ran sfc.exe (full file check and auto-repair) in safe mode shortly after it first occurred, rebooted and fixed the problem for a while, but then after a couple restarts it failed again. Ran sfc.exe again but this time no joy.
6. Ran several malware scans (MBAM, MSE, SAS) nothing major found.
7. Also uninstalled MSE and installed a trial Bit Defender. Ran full scan, said it found and deleted 5 files but for the life of me couldn?t get a log or anything to come up so I could see WHAT the 5 files were. Also gave me a false positive for PaleMoon.exe and auto dele... Read more

Lately, the icons on my desktop, start menu, and explorer have been appearing as blank pieces of paper (see below). I have no idea what is happening or why, but they appear like this whenever I log, restart, boot into safe mode, etc... it is doing this with all icons that are not OS-based (my computer, recycle, folders, etc...), have custom made icons (.ico), or are from Linux-based programs (such as GnuCash). I can however, open the shortcut or .exe with an icon editor/creator and view the icon metadata.

I looked up the problem on these forums, but they were never solved and dropped off uncompleted. I've also checked on various other websites, and the only similar problems I came across were on older versions of Windows, who's solutions were outdated and irrelevant to Vista.

I appreciate any help. Thank you,

As the title mentioned, my file explorer, start menu, and task manager are all cripplingly slow (and probably anything else associated with these). We are talking click on start menu and wait 5 seconds before it shows up. Same extremely delayed response for file explorer and task manager.

Everything else runs fine - this is a decent workstation meant for image processing. I run access, excel, firefox with 15+tabs, mem-hungry GIS programs and all kinds of stuff simultaneously and it handles everything fine. processes show 90+% idle, cpu usage between 1 and 5%.
This problem occurs maybe 20% of the time I am using the computer.

I've tried everything I can think of; from Unpinning everything and Repinning it, taking-out and replacing the File Explorer link, changing the function to launch Quick Access - and in every combination as well as Reset & Clear.

I have several Folders and stacks of Recent Files visible in Quick Access, and ideally would like to avoid just blitzing my User Profile or Installation yet again. Does anyone have any insight?

hi,

OS - Win XP SP3

i ran some pretty complicated malware-removal programs since my PC (on the office network) was showing loads of trojans and other malware. in the order of running, i ran Malwarebytes, MGTools, Combofix with the windows recovery option. Then, on not having found anything substantial, I uninstalled Combofix with the /u optiom and deleted C:Combofix and later, proceeded to delete C:MGTools.

Post this, I ran SuperANTIspyware.Found some malware by the last named. I cleaned up the PC of all the crap and then, did a reboot.

The PC allows me to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del log in, and once I hit Return after entering the password, it just shows me the blue background to the desktop - No items, no menus.

Same thing happens in safe mode.

Ran a SFC Scannow. Gave it the original boot disk. Rebooted after SFC. Again, the system wont move beyond the blue screen. Later, I discovered a solution.

1. I do a Ctrl Alt Del
2. go to File
3. go to New Task (Run)
4. Type explorer.exe

and everything is alright.

But on trying to reboot, the blue screen is a constant.

Tried System Restore post this - doesnt allow me to go to Yesterdays date. Allows me only to go back to four hours prior to now.

When SFC Scannnow did not help me, what will?

Hello everyone,
Management has finally given the go-ahead to upgrade our end-users from IE 9 to 11. There major caveat mentioned is that they want the 64-bit shortcut to IE11 removed from the Start Menu. The reason is that we have a few proprietary applications that will
only function using a 32-bit version of Internet Explorer.
To avoid a flood of support calls, I'd like to automate this process. I'd rather be proactive than reactive in this scenario. Previously, we've done this manually on a user basis (meaning, we image a computer, remove the link after, deploy). However, re-imaging
every computer in the company is not option, as we simply don't have the 1) time and 2) personnel to accomplish this task.
We're using Windows 7 Professional x64 and will be using Desktop Central ManageEngine to deploy the the upgrade. We've tested and it looks good - we can push the prerequisite patches and the new executable without any issue...save the fact that none of my
scripts have been able to successfully remove the 64-bit IE 11 shortcut.
Has anyone ever been in this situation before? If so, any suggestions?
Thanks!
Alex
