Can a Dell computer from 2005....

Q: Can a Dell computer from 2005....

Hello!
So, I lost my windows XP disk long ago...I was curious if it was possible for a Dell computer (We got it around 04 or 05), would be able to use a windows 7 disk?
If there are other factors that would decide that let me know. xD

Hi, guys my Dell has been running ridiculously slow recently and rather reinstall XP which i know is not supported anymore i was thinking of installing the 32bit Windows 7. The Dell just barely meets the minimum requirements.

I just have a few, hopefully very simple, questions;

1.
When I originally installed Windows XP on this machine i needed to install the various drivers (motherboard, sound, wi-fi...), would Windows 7 have most of these drivers already or do I have to go hunting for the Windows 7 version of these drivers. The Dell site only provides drivers for XP/Vista for the D430

2.
How do i know which drivers to look for? Should i make a list of all my hardware before I install windows 7? How will i know what is missing when I install windows 7? Device manager?

3.
Is it a good idea to install windows 7? I have a been a devoted fan of XP for a long time and only now am considering Windows 7, but maybe my machine can handle the pressure

4.
I read on a forum that it is a good idea to run diagnostics, to see if my slow computer has issues. I suppose this is a good idea before i attempt to install windows 7?

Thanks in advance for your help guys!!!! im stumped here on what to do!

A:Upgrading to Windows 7 on Dell D430 (2005)

Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor this will tell you if your computer supports Windows 7. If Dell does not have driver support for Windows 7, then it probably won't work. Though Windows 7 does load most of the drivers you need and most Vista drivers will work if none others are available.

Hi. My Dell e310 freezes a lot.
Whenever I restart it, it usually just goes back to normal. Today though, when I restarted it (like 20 times..) It just freezes right after it logs onto my account.

For a while it wouldn't even load any icons or the taskbar, but now it loads that.

I tried to boot into safe mode a while ago (from F12 at the start screen) but the keyboard froze so I couldn't scroll up to safe mode.

Now the keyboard works during startup, but F12 brings me to a different menu!!

I have other computers to use, but this one has important work stuff on it that has a deadline... of tomorrow.

Next weekend, I'm going to reformat it after I hopefully extract some data from the hard drive with my HDD enclosure, but does anyone have any suggestions for what i can do right now?? If I can start it in safe mode I might be able to fiddle with it but now I don't even know how to do that!
SORRY This was so long and thank you everyone who read this and is able to help

Hello everyone this is my first post. I have looked everywhere and I can not come up with a solution for this issue. So I decided to do a clean reinstall of windows because of previous sound card issues. I bought a top of the line card hoping that it will fix my driver issues. It was a sound blaster fatality pro series. This did the exact same thing when I tried to update the drivers from some unknown issues. So, to me the reasonable solution was a clean wipe.. This turns out to not be a good idea. But I really had no choice seeing as the installations were so messed up. I did everything I could but with no avail. Now here comes the real problem. I put in the XP SP 2 CD hoping that everything will be fine and it was........ everything worked like a charm, but after the formatting the setup starts up again. Now I get an error called a cyclic redundancy check error. This causes the setup to restart and I have done everything and I am stuck in a fail cycle. The CD is clean and I have no idea how to access the checkdisk feature when I have no operating system. Please Help Me. I am completely stuck!!!!!!

A:Dell XPS 2005 model? horrible xp reinstallation issues.

Hi hackroot and welcome to TSF

I would think you have a hardware issue. I'm not a Dell user, so I really don't know what a Dell model 2005 is. If it is a desktop, remove the side panel and blow out the dust and cobwebs using a can of compressed air. Clean the fan blades with alcohol and qtips. Be sure to blow out the heat sinks and also the powersupply. If you haven't been in a computer before, be SURE to touch the bare metal case before touching anything inside.

If my memory serves, a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is when data is written somewhere (memory or harddisk) and read back. If it don't match, you get a CRC error. That said, reseat the cables to the harddrive, CD/DVD drives, and the motherboard. Do both the power and data cables. Also, reseat the memory sticks. If there are any jumpers on the back of the harddrive or CD/DVD drives, reseat them also. The reseating process is not just pushing in on the cables, but pulling them back some and sliding them back on. That action is needed to insure the pins and recepticles have good contact.

Try this and see if it helps
Best regards,
Mack1

Hi,
Well, my Dell owners manual leaves me wondering...
about a planned upgrade to this PC.
The Dell Owners manual says that "SATA HD's" connect to the system board connectors labeled SATA-0 thru SATA 3 and CD/DVD drives to the PRI IDE connector.
My question is, can I hook up a LG GSA-H62L 18X DVD +/- RW DL SATA Drive w/LightScribe to the SATA connectors instead of the IDE connectors?
:suspiciou
I have a extra SATA power connector on the power supply cord to the single HD with just enough length to reach the upper drive bay for a workable power connector. I'll have to order a SATA signal connector cable though.

My minds eye says yepper rooney, it's a doable thingy.
Just crossin' my "T's" and dotting my "i's".
How about it guru's?

ARE Any 'MB set-up' configurations that would be needed?

Thanks....

Jeff

yes you can do that. im sure when the manual was written there was no SATA CD/DVD. you sould have no problem installing the LG GSA-H62L DVD drive

I'm trying to decide between purchasing the 2001 or the 2005 for gaming. Has anyone tried either?

A:Has anyone used Dell 2001 or 2005 20inch monitors for gaming?

Are those TFTs ? The larger TFTs are still not as fast as smaller ones such as 17" TFTs. 19 TFTs are borderline for gaming if you don't intend to spend more then $400 for a low response time TFT, but 20" & above are still way to slow to play FPS games for example.

If you play RTS games or games such as WoW, it won't be as evident, you might actualy not notice a thing but for fast paced games, it won't be acceptable (especialy considering the price these go for).

What OS (Win XP/2000, etc) are you using? Have you tried doing your anti-virus and anti-malware scans in "SAFE MODE"?...then set your time correctly, reboot and see if that resolves the problem. The problem could also be related to the motherboard battery. You may want to try replacing that if your not finding any malware.

Ok, I'll start off by saying that I've read the forum rules and as a new member please don't get upset with me if I make some sort of mistake.

Anyhow my main reason for coming here is my computer problem, obviously. I bought a used computer on ebay from a liquidator or something like that. The computer is a hp pavilion model a1104x with 200gb and a 3.2ghz processor. I bought the computer for $250 with shipping, it came in 'ok' shape, I had to clean it up a little but thats allright. Anyhow it came with windows already installed on it, with someone elses photos, music, and a bunch of other stuff I didn't need. But at the same time it didn't bother me, with 200gb's I had more than I needed and the computer ran fine. I only really wanted it for the internet and downloading music. So life goes on and everything is fine until one unfortunate day I get a virus thats called trojan.pea...? and everything stopped working. So I thought ok, this sucks, what can I do? With my 'very mild' computer knowledge I spent a few hours doing what ever it was I was doing. And what ever it was it didn't work, so I thought the easiest thing to do would be to delete the current windows and re-install the windows again. Its not like I had any programs or files that I would lose since I only use my computer for the internet and music (which is all on cds and my mp3 player anyway.) So I put the windows disk in, restarted my computer, deleted my old wind... Read more

what you need to do is go to HP.com and click the Support and Downloads button. Type in the name and model # (IE: PAvillion 500). This should pop up the drivers you need (IE: Modem and Sound). Once you download them, some may have an install program, or you can right click on my computer, go to properties, click the "Hardware" tab, then click device manager. right click on the hardware with the warning signs and select "Update/Reinstall driver". tell it to look for the drivers (Specify a location) and select where you unzipped them to. I recently performed a clea install of Windows XP Media Center 2005 to work with my new ATI TV Wonder Elite. Everything was working perfectly until I got home from work today to use it.

Here is a summary of the problem:

Basically, I can't see anything on my screen anymore. It looks like the monitor is stuck in power save, but only when it is attached to my computer. I've ruled out that something is wrong with the monitor itself, it works just fine on other computers. Moreover, the mouse and keyboard no longer function (no red light on the optical mouse, no response from the keyboard. When the computer boots up though, the lights on the keyboard flicker and then disappear as usual. I've checked the usual suspects (loose cables etc.) and they are all fine.

The last thing I remember doing was running Windows Update to get all the patches. I was confronted by the Windows "Genuine Advantage" but I passed. I downloaded all the updates I rebooted back to Windows just fine and left it on for the night.

I plugged my physical HDD (with the OS on it) into another computer, but it was unable to boot to Windows. All it did was give me is the option to revert to the last known configuration, start Windows normally, or boot to safe mode et al. None of these options work, as it would always come back to this screen after the 30 second countdown. I used the windows disk to repair the installation and got into it just fine.

Any ideas? I'm at a loss really. It... Read more

When I start Quicken 2005 by itself my system resorces drop from about 62% to about 38%. As I use it they keep going lower until I eventualy get a warning system may crash, resorces below 10%. I don't dare open anything else, not even a web page. I uninstalled and re-installed with no changes. I was running Quicken 2001 with never a problem. I've shut down everything in startup that I feel I don't need. My system is a Pentium lll, 1 gig with about 474mb memory and Windows 98 SE. When I notice resorces are getting low I close Quicken and re-open it and resorces go back to 38% and of course continue downward.

Hello,
I have been using the above mentioned computer for a long time. I have had multiple problems along the way but for quite sometime it has been running top notch... Which is what I like....

From time to time I notice that the amount of space it has startes going down. This summer I got it back up to 30 GB memory and now it is down to 12.5... this makes me nervous. What to do? I am bewildered...

I don't keep pictures on this computer but I do use the picture folder to manipulate them then they go to an Expansion drive... Does Photo Gallery eat up a lot of space? whether pictures are there or not?

Has anyone else had these problems? What to do?

I have a back up computer I bought last year- an HP with Win 8 and I just am not as fond of it as I am this one.

Would appreciate hearing peoples thoughts..

Thanks...

I've got both...and personally I think EA's hockey is a much better game than ESPN, the skating looks much better, actually all the graphics are better. The only cons to the game are that there is no multiplayer online (from the same xbox) and you can't setup custom music tracks.

Of course ESPN, has better online support, commentary, and way more extras.

It's a toss up. As far as gameplay itself, I have to give the nod to EA. As for everything else, I have to say ESPN did a great job.

I have a feeling I'll be playing EAs game more...unless there are several people over and we want to play online...

What are your thoughts, which game do you think is better and why?

What is the Blue Screen Error message say? Also when you get to the Advanced Boot up screen, one of the options is to disable Automatic Restart after and error. Choose this one for better trouble shooting.
Have you installed any new software or Hardware or did any updates to software recently?
If you have an XP CD boot off of that and get to the Recovery Console. there type in chkdsk /f/r and hit enter. The Check Disk Utility will try and fix any file system problems.

Hi

I was hoping someone could help me.

I have installed Norton Systemworks Premier 2005 and now my laptop hangs at shut down - the screen says it is shutting down and then just hangs there. My OS is XP Pro.

I uninstalled the Anti-virus component and it shuts down just fine. I reinstalled it and it hung again. I have done Liveupdate, I have disabled Autoprotect, I have unticked to scan the floppy on closing and I have updated Symevnt.exe from the Symantec site. Nothing works! I do not know how to contact support without a payment. :-(

If anyone has any ideas, I would be most appreciative!!!

Thanks!

Windows XP MCE 2005 OEM (HP) - computer starts with BSOD Stop Error (0x0000007b, 0x0f78e524, 0x00000034)

(Sounds a bit silly)
My computer an HP Pavillion m7680n with dual boot Windows/Ubuntu shows the Stop error message as above when trying to boot into WinXP, however, booting into Ubuntu is still possible. Is there a way that I can repair this from Ubuntu? Does the fact that I have a dual boot (GRUB) setup make things worse.

I have tried: Booting from the recovery DVD but they report a file missing
I can boot into Acronis Disk Director Recovery but am not sure how to fix the error as the disk drives are mixed up. System has 2 HD of 250 megs each partitioned into 4 partitions.
Also booted from a previous copy of XP Home same error message.

I believe that one of the intel drivers has been corrupted as it seems Windows does recognise the drives.

All files appear to be still on the drive if I view the tree in Ubuntu

I can boot using a USB drive (option's there in the CMOS) if that's a solution

Thank you for any help or insight you can bring as I try to fix this problem.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE [email protected]#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying  " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

Hi ppl!

I have a pretty specific problem. I'm a total newbie on databases, so I hope one of you can help!

I'm upgrading an application on a corporate server which use a SQL database. They already have SQL Server 2005 installed on the host for other purposes, but at the time of the original install the app I'm upgrading only supported SQL Express, so they had to install it on the same host and create a new database.

The new upgrade supports the full-blown server, and the wish is to move the database from the Express instance to the server.

As I said, the two SQL installations reside on the same host, and updating the app with the new database details should be easy. So I guess I'm wondering if there is an easy way to merge or import the "old" Express instance or preferrably only the database I need.

Their db-guy is out of town, and I really have to get this upgrade done halp!

They use Management Studio to manage both instances.

thanks in advance guys!

A:Moving SQL Server 2005 Express database to SQL Server 2005

Hey there, welcome to TSG

Are you trying to port the database or the server configuration? If it's just the database, you should be able to create a dump of it and import it into the new server. I don't know how to do that with SQL Server, but you could probably Google "SQL Server 2005 database dump" and find some relevant material. If it's the server config, is there an .INI or .CONF file you can copy over?

I guess I'm not being much help because I have no experience with SQL Server, but in general a database port should be simple enough as long as both engines support the same data types. There should be very little push-up to get from 2005 Server Express to 2005 Server Enterprise.

Here seems to be a pertinent link to a Google Answers thread:

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=781934Is there help documentation for Management Studio? I'm sure there is a built-in utility to handle imports and exports.

My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer

Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.

Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

A:Dell Computer PC will not load Windows install CD from computer crash

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

For the last few months our new (about 9 months old) dell computer running XP has begun to freeze up, theres no apparent pattern to it, but what we found is that if we right click and get the task manager, light up the program DAMon.exe, and click end process it does free it up every time.

We think the program DAMon.exe has something to do with Dells help system and did go to them and ask twice, we got two different solutions neither of which sounded right and we didnt do them. If its there program I assume we might consider eliminating it but are afraid to do that if it would result in their inability to assist in some other future problem.

I am a novice and have been a little leery about doing anything, what ever solution you might think of would have to be simple but if anyone could suggest a simple thing I would appreciate it.

This is Proview74. I recently bought a new computer and used a "secure delete" program to clean all files off the old Dell computer (4700). I still have the Operating System (XP Media Center Edition 2005) reinstallation DVD for the Dell 4700, which I tried to reinstall by inserting it into the cd drive and rebooting the unit. However, the screen asked me for a password which I cannot remember (from 2005) when I first bought the computer. In fact, I don't even remember using a password at the time.

Is there anyway to over-ride the password, or use a substitute password, to get the computer to accept the reinstallation disc? I tried pressing f12, got into the BIOS section, but I have to enter a password to change the password to a new one. I am at a loss, and if I can't get it reinstalled, a perfectly good computer will have to be scrapped. Would love to get it going so my grand kids could use it.

Appreciate any help to get this going. Thanks for your help.

A:Re-installing XP on Dell computer

We don't generally offer help with password issues here for obvious reasons but F2 should get you into BIOS where you'll be asked for a password. F12 simply shows you the boot menu so you can boot from the CD and I'm surprised if the password is necessary at that stage.

You could enter the Service Tag, which is printed somewhere on the case, into the Dell website and enquire whether they set a password and on satisfying them you were the purchaser, they should tell you but if you set it yourself and forgot it, you're lost. I have to say it would have been an unusual thing to do - do you have a recollection of doing it?

Hi, and welcome to Techspot.
Your question is a little confusing, bios and dos are two completely different things...
Maybe you should read a little about BIOS on this website.
If you need to enter BIOS you probably have to press F2 when the DELL logo shows up right after you start your computer. You don't need any CDs or USB flash drives to enter BIOS.

Hello,
I just purchased a new XPS 8900 desktop delivered on 5/25/2016 and is restarting itself.  No new hardware installed or program except World of Warcraft and Ventrilo.   Just really started using this machine late last week since I was really busy after it arrived.
I research the web and it said it maybe PSU related issue.  It is under warranty but any idea why a new computer is restarting it self?
Thank you.
Susan

A:New Dell Computer Restarting by Itself

Windows 10?
There are many possible reasons, both hardware and software: PSU, RAM or hard drive problem, overheating, corrupted OS or other software...
Does it just restart? Any errors on the screen? You can look in Windows Event Viewer for errors around the time of a crash that might point you in the right direction.
If you bought it directly from Dell, I believe you have 21 days from invoice date (not delivery date) to return it so contact Dell Tech Support ASAP.
If you got it from a big box store, you can probably return/exchange it under whatever policy they have. So get going.
Either way, be sure to reset Windows to the factory image before you return it.

How far can you expand your average dell computer?

hey all, could someone tell me if i can change the motherboard in my factory dell vostro 410 desktop, so that i can replace it with a motherboard that is SLI enabled?

If so what motherboards should i be looking for, is there a specific one due to the size of the case?

Also, being a dell computer i realize your limited into what your changing, does that apply to the PSU and CPU?

Thank You, look forward to your replies

A:HELP: Expanding Dell Computer

The case is standard ATX size so a standard ATX motherboard will fit. Find one that is SLI enable. Since you are switching the motherboard out, why not build a PC from scratch? You'll have to look in the case but the PSU should be interchangeable.

I have a dell computer running XP professional. A few days ago it died completely, my daughter said a few weeks before that it was acting funny. Like pop ups were occurring and web pages were redirecting.

A new power supply fixed the dying part of the problem. It booted fine after installing the new power supply but lots of little error pop ups were occurring. Tried to do liveupdate of symantec and it said it couldn't reach the server. Then tried going to the updates.microsoft site, symantec, and macafee sites .... they all were blocked saying the browser could not get to them.

Then I let "microsoft security essentials" install. It said there were several malware/spyware/trojan horses on the machine. After reboot it know goes through BIOS just fine but then goes to a blank screen. Doesn't look like it even is booting into the OS .....

I don't know what to do at this point ....If I don't here from some body in the next day on this forum I am going to go ahead and just wipe the drive and install XP professional again.

My mom has some kind of adware running and I notice that the "Explorer.EXE" file is probably the culprit or Macafee not helping out since it demands something called a renewal for a subscription. Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 computer that is about 3 years old. I just got a new battery for it about 3 or 4 months ago. I'm having trouble with it because I'll have my computer plugged in and it says, (plugged in, not charging). The second I take it off the charger it starts to lose it's charge, but while it's plugged in it holds it. I'm down to 13% and I really don't want to lose my computer. What should I do?

A:Dell Computer Charge

Hi and welcome to TSF did you get the battery from dell or elsewhere as batteries bought from after market sources do not always perform well and if your adapter works then you can still use the laptop admittedly somewhat limited, contact the seller and complain

Hi, I have had a lot of trouble on my 6 year old Dell Desktop Dimension 2400 computer, it is too complex to go into detail here' but it has been a nightmare for nearly 4 weeks and I am still going to have do it all over again as in reinstall Win XP / or the drivers at least.

It crashes to Bluescreen every time I Insert a USB stick, Connect and start my Printer, or connect my Western Dig Ext HD which has all the stuff I backed up on.

The major problem was that I missed the "install order list" the first time (my own inexperience) but I have found another DELL list and it Contradicts the First order List anyway' Sooo! Is there a site where I can find out what I need the Order to install them and download them onto a Disk or USB as I had no internet when I first installed Widows XP that was the beginning of my downfall. I have been to DELL Forum's and tried to do the things they suggest but you cannot delete all the USB,s in Disc Manager/ Devices/ USB's/ as you have no Keyboard or Mouse half way through? Thanks if you can help Dasha

A:Can I use other drivers on a Dell computer

Wow. Yea. Sounds like your machine is currently "quite the mess"!

You should certainly start with the drivers on the Dell web site.

Always start with the chipset drivers. I'd do network and storage (IDE) drivers next then the others. Install drivers before installing the applications.

One of my coworkers brought in one of her personal machines, which is completely new (still packaged up and everything); an HP ProDesk. After going through the initial setup and installing AVs, changing IE settings and all that good stuff, I ran Windows Update. For some reason, a Dell, Inc. update showed up.

Should there be any reason for this?

Thanks in advance.

I had a virus and must have messed up my computer in trying to fix it. Now my computer won't boot. I can't get it to boot from the XP CD. In the set-up, boot sequence I set it only for the cd and I get "strike f1 to retry boot, F2 for setup". if I turn it off and on and hit f12 I get 5 choices; 1 normal, 2 ide cd-rom device, 3 system setup, 4 ide drive diagnostics, 5 boot to utility partition. None work. the diag says hd is fine. I'd like to reformat/reload xp on hard drive and can't. On another computer I can get the comuter to boot from the xp cd and it works

A:Dell XP computer won't boot

You can try resetting the BIOS to default settings...by temporarily removing the CMOS battery...and that might allow a boot.

What is the system model?

I just bought a refurbished Dell Dimension 4400 Pentium 4, 1.7GHz, 256MB, 30GB from ubid.com. It came with no operating software or monitor which was fine because I had my own. However, I can't seem to be able to start up the computer. This is what I'm doing;

I turn on the computer with the "Dell Dimension Resource CD" in the computer. (It does say on the top of the cd that "You must boot your computer from this CD to run the diagnostics, which may require changing your computer's boot sequence.")

I) It starts to run & at first it says "Invalid system disk replace the disk, and then press any key." I do so & it then gives me an option to either boot from hard drive or cd, and I select "2" which is cd. It then shows "starting Windows 98 which is a bit odd coz there should be no OS on the computer. I will be installing XP.

II) I then get a list of choices 1)run graphics 2) run 32 bit bell diagnostics 3) run 3com nic config utili 4) create SATA RAID driver diskette 5)Exit to dos 6) Reboot system.

III) I tried chice #1, it passed

IV) Choice 2 it said, "system error this system is not recoginzed as a supported dell pc. these diagnostics may not be run on unsupported sustems. I click "OK"
It then goes back to "I" above and on to the 6 choices again.

My mother has a new dell computer windows 8 bought a month ago. It has given her trouble from day one but now is becomming unbearable to use. Simple tasks like browsing the web will hang or crash. Desktop based programs become unresponsive routinely. The computer has some serious memory issues that occur from the second it is booted up fresh. I cannot even open task manager because the comp has no free memory. Metro interface seems to function properly even when the desktop was just having so much trouble. I have no idea how i can solve this problem because i cannot even get the computer to open simple troubleshooting programs like task manager to try and diagnose. I am at my wits end and just about to the point where I am going to install W7 over her computer bc it never gave me so much trouble. I am sure this has something to do with W8 or drivers memory leaks. I just dont understand how it is performing so poorly essentially running on default manufacturers settings and drivers. I know for certain this is not how W8 is supposed to run. Please help me fix this. Dell XPS 15 Win8.

I have a Dell XPS 410 that is 2 years old. I started getting blue screen errors and called Dell they said it was the hard drive. I replaced it and still kept getting the errors. When I called Dell again they said it was the mother board so I took it to Best Buy and they said it was the mother board. I had them replace it and have had it home for just a little over a week and today I got the blue screen again. It did a couple of restarts on its own and then today just the blue screen. Does anyone have any ideas on what else might be causing them?

Hi,

I am helping a friend who has a Dell Inspiron N5105 laptop running Vista Home Premium.

It was supplied only recently as part of an insurance claim settlement - she was told it had just been built for her specifically so she expected it to be problem free.

The internet works fine and she can check her email and facebook, etc - but although Skype 4.2 is pre-installed she cannot logon to the service using her ID and password, and neither can I, it just says for ages "Signing in" and eventually "Skype cannot connect to your account - for help click here" but that link doesn't work either.

She has asked for a password reset and logged onto the Skype website to complete this successfully, but the client still does the above - and the same with my own account.

Also, the screen to activate her copy of MS Office XP is corrupted (just showing as blank box!).

To try to resolve both problems, I backed up her files (only a few) and did a factory reset from the recovery partition. The Skype problem remains.

The Office activation wizard now offers to activate over the internet ... but says it can't make a connection to the server, and when I try to use the telephone method it refuses to give us a phone number to call.

I have connected the laptop to a different internet connection and the problems remain.

She tells me that her boss is also unable to activate the latest version of Office that they have too, so this isn't just a Office XP iss... Read more

I'm a long way away, and at a loss as to what I should tell her, without looking at it myself.... and I'm no guru thats for sure, I'd probably try to see if it would boot from the disk, but I'd be lost after that!

Any ideas?

A:Dell Computer Won't Boot

No video?

First thing I would check would be the connection between monitor and system and the power cord.

The fact that the system shuts down would seem to indicate a PS problem, with no further info (IMO).

According to google, the Dell Dimension 4700 has DDR2 RAM at 400 MHz. Both links you posted have DDR2 RAM at faster speeds, so while you can add both of them, I believe, they'll still run at the slower speed unless you take out the older RAM.

hey JohnWill,

I also have a Dell Dimension 2400 with XP-home on it. I bought the PC almost new at a yard sale last summer. The lady that owned it Even transfered the warranty for me. When I got it home (came with all the disks), the first thing I did was was remove all of the Norton's software from it.

A BIG MISTAKE I found out later. Dell has a "PC Restore for Window XP" that I found out later.

Here's the link:http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?docid=181316#1

Basically, "When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
NOTE: Some systems like Inspiron Mini 9 (910) do not support System Restore as they do not have <F11> nor any substitute."

In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.

I didn't know this !!!

So you are saying Ctrl+F11 does not work??

If Ctrl+F11 is broken it can be repaired sometimes but is not easy, lots of reading to do.

http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm

Your uninstalling Norton Software while in Windows did not break it, the most common cause of this problem is Installing XP from the CD, Dell uses a proprietary Master Boot Record (MBR), when you reinstall XP from the CD, it replaces this MBR with a generic one and breaks the Ctrl+F11 functionality. If the Dell image is still on the ""healthy Unknown Partition" that is a FAT32 3.49 GB's", then you can repair it in most cases following Dan Goodells instructions.

having nothing better to do, i decided to take apart my computer and finally install a new hard drive i have kept for almost a year. so i decided to give myself a challenge and take the thing apart completely, taking almost all the things off of the motherboard and stripping the shell of everything except for the motherboard. i then used an air duster on everything, but as i dusted the geforce driver, some of the liquid inside sprayed on it but then quickly evaporated. i pieced all the pieces as they were(or so i think), and turned the computer on, but my monitor did not turn on at all. i unplugged the monitor, and it said it was searching for a signal(after i unplugged it from the computer.

i am not very experienced with computer hardware, and right now all i know is that it is a refurbished hp compaq desktop.

A:Dell computer won't stay on

That liquid is most likely duster propellant and it won't hurt anything. You probably didn't attach the front panel wires properly back to the motherboard and hopefully you didn't damage the motherboard with a static electricity discharge. Take the computer to a friend or someone that knows how to repair computers. If you have damaged something by doing all this yourself, chalk it up to experience
