Wheres my other HardDrive?

Q: Wheres my other HardDrive?

I built this new computer.

AMD Phenom II X2 555
Asus M4A78LT-M LE Mobo
OCZ SSD 32GB
SEAGATE 7K 8M 250GB HD
SAPPHIRE ATI 5670 1GB
ANTEC 500W PSU
2Gx2 KINGSTON 1333 MEM

Heres the problem. I used the SSD as the boot drive, but I cant find the 250GB HD. I hooked up the storage via sata...like this: SSD-sata 1, Seagate-sata 2, front panal sata jumper-sata 3.
Windows 7 doesnt show the 250GB drive since I chose the SSD as the boot drive upon installing windows 7. So, what do I do?

Thx for any help, CJ

A: Wheres my other HardDrive?

Open your Start Menu, right-click Computer and select 'Manage'. Left-click 'Disk Management', find your Seagate drive, then assign it a letter and Format it. Then it should be recognized by Windows 7.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Create-and-format-a-hard-disk-partition

Hi pofolks4,

Can you attach the screenshoot?

Run Disk Cleanup tool and clear the Thumbnails (Attached Screen shot).

Click Start > Type: "folder options" and open > Go to view Tab > uncheck "always show icons, never thumbnails" under Files and Folders (Attached Screen shot).

Ok I took the plunge and upgraded to IE7. HATE IT! where is the OE link on my toolbar or task bar or whatever that is? Now I am forced to go to my desktop to access OE whereas with IE6 there was the little envelop icon up top there that was my OE link. If I dont get a clear answer on this I am just going back to IE no matter what the risk as far as critical updates I just cannot STAND IE7 .For me IE6 was simple it was a clean look and simple use this IE7 is stupid, makes no sense it was just done to compete and from what I have heard from bigger geeks than I is, Microssoft is years late and about a million dollars too short (to corrupt the old cliche) with IE7,ok This is just IMHO but its how I feel abouti t. So can someone help me I even tried to see if I could put OE as a favorites but cannot do THAT either. save IE7's life on my puter (if u care, about IE7 cos I don't) I just want to return to the times of old and easier. thanks y'all bad

Im running Outlook 2002 on 5 different computers via a server running Microsoft Exchange Network. When I assigned delegate acces to four of them, there was no fight. However, one of them will not let me assign delegate access no matter what I do. I have tried using the add-in manager to set up the delegate option, but it doesnt do anything. I cannot see the delegates tab in options, nor can I see it in the inbox options. I am trying to assign delegate access for read access to the inbox, and read, edit, modify access to the calendar. Anyone have any bright ideas? Cause im tapped out. Thanks

A:Wheres the Delegates?

If you right-click the inbox (or calendar) and go to Properties, do you see a Permissions tab? You should be able to grant permissions from there. It works much the same as the delegates tab, but when you grant people permissions in delegates, it also gives them the ability to "send on behalf of" the user, which may or may not be what you want. Let us know whether the permissions tab is visible and whether that's helpful, or not what you're looking for.

hello all;
heres a good one for the gurus.
i am running an hp compaq dc5850 sff. i have two hdd. one with all my America's Army stuff on it. on one i have the deploy client and game but nothing else that pertains to AA2.
so i decide to start to set up AA2 on the vista hdd as it is on xp hdd, the first thing i do is go to my maps website of choice and start to download the user created maps i like. everything looks good, i choose the correct directory and file and even hit the open folder button to make sure the map is in the right place and it is.
now the good part, i close everything up and go back to the map to make sure it will start and play correctly and it is not there, i search for it from the search window at start and search tells me the closet it could find was the same map but on the E drive, which is where the xp hdd is when i boot vista.
any ideas?

My older second reserve laptop - Toshiba Satellite A30-921, came with a 40gb hd and 512mb ram with Winxp (approx 5 years old)
Decided to try and get it back to life and give it a second chance, as in the past it kept rebooting every 10 minutes, and was so slow when it was working.
Used the product recovery disks for a fresh new start, removed one of the 256mb memory modules and replaced it with 1gb, so now up to 1.2 gb ram.Its even managed to install Windows SP3 without any hitches.
Only need to use it for email/ surfing at present, but would like to download stuff in the future.
Have installed Norton 360 as I have this on my other laptop with a 3 user licence.

Up to yet, no problems BUT, can you answer me this:

USED SPACE SHOWING ON C:LOCAL DISK =14.3 GB !!
FREE SPACE = 22.8 GB

I have not installed any Office suite/word/works/excel etc, I have not downloaded any pictures, music, documents
Space being used for "Documents/shared docs"= 5mb (sample stuff)
Space used on currently installed programs (taken from control panel) = 312mb

Whats eating up all my space, and what kind of % of used space should determine whether to upgrade the hd in the future ?
Thanks

can someone help? I just ran restore from a backup on an external harddrive, it took over 5 hrs, then finished. But where is all my 'restored' data?? I cant find it....

if this is too vague tell me and i will try to explain further but its pretty straight forward....

is there something more i must do?

A:wheres my restored data?

If the restore ran properly, the restored files and folders should be in the same places they were when you did the backup. It sounds like either there was a problem with the backup or there is a problem with the restore. Let's make sure you're doing things correctly before assuming there is some problem with the system or the hardware or the backup file - which we will address later if this doesn't help. The following should help:

Here's an article on the restore procedure: http://www.vista4beginners.com/How-to-restore-files just to make sure you're doing it right. It's a selective restore of a full or selective backup (not a complete restore of a complete backup) - but since you did a full backup it matches your process closer than a complete restore would.

Here's another excellent tutorial on the Restore process: Restore Backup Files.

Here's an article on how to use Advanced Restore (when normal restore doesn't work): http://www.mayankraichura.com/post/2009/08/06/Avdvanced-Restore-via-Windows-Vista-Backup-and-Restore-Center.aspx.

Restore files from a backup
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Restore-files-from-a-backup

I typed "tablet wallpaper" into google images. It says

"About 25,800,000 results"

I keep clicking "Show more results" until I get to "page" 50 and it ends with a picture that says "I heart ipad".

Then thats it. No button to load more results. Google said 25,800,000 results. That certainly wasn't 25,800,000 results.

A:Wheres the REST of googles results ?

I did a search using your exact phrase and my results were: About 47,100,000 results (0.15 seconds)A quick google search for a definition of those results netted: Statistics Bar: Describes your search, includes the number of results on the current results page and an estimate of the total number of results, as well as the time your search took. For the sake of efficiency, Google estimates the number of results; it would take considerably longer to compute the exact number. This estimate is unreliable.Bold is mine. From the preceding I extrapolate that the guesstimation number is a product of Google's algorithm for every possibility of those two words and how they would be used as well as them being used combined. As well as possibly wall and paper individually . To get every single one of those guesstimated results you would likely need to refine your search parameters repeatedly. For example Samsung 'tablet wallpaper' then ipad 'tablet wallpaper' so on and so on. Not to mention probably include every known language as well. This is my theory. Also there was this bit of information about search results:Ordered by relevance to your query, with the result that Google considers the most relevant listed first. Consequently you are likely to find what you're seeking quickly by looking at the results in the order in which they appear. Google assesses relevance by considering over a hundred factors, including how many other pages link to the page, the positions... Read more

Hi

I was browsing through using FireFox 2.0.0.4 - had a couple of tabs open - one or 2 tabs related to localhost.
When I switched tabs and clicked on a browse link in one tab (one with phpMyAdmin loaded, to browse through the rows), I got the blue screen.

Memory got dumped as usual. Told to CHKDSK /F to check for drive errors etc.
I dont get this often. Probably thrice in the last 3 yrs - and the first 2 were hardware related I think.

After a restart, I got the Technical Error Report and that something created at

Code:

C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERebe1.dir00\sysdata.xml

In this picture, you can see a settings button for the Loudness Equalization enhancement. When I go to the enhancement tab, there is no settings option (or "Preview" or "Restore Defaults"). Why is this? I wanted to see what the "Release time" option does, and I can't get to it.

Also, while I'm here, I was wondering if there was a way I could "tweak" loudness equalization. I want to make low/quiet sounds louder, but I don't want to reduce the volume of louder sounds. Is this possible? I've been googling for ~2hrs and I came across the Release time setting, and I was gonna mess with it, but it's missing.

Thanks!

A:Loudness Equalization - Wheres the settings button??

No settings available... unfortunately!

It looks like MS has licensed some of the "Waves" DSP technology, pretty high end software... part of the L-series Maximizer. It's a combination Limiter/Compressor and I think they figured the general public wouldn't know how to set it up. Too bad, it could use a litttle tweaking, the attack is a little slow.

Greetings and thanks for any help here...
Back story...Last week I bought a new computer running Windows 7 Pro,
Before my new computer arrived I installed Microsofts Easy Transfer program on my old XP computer , ran the program and sucsessfully transfered my files on to a new blank CDRW disc.
Today I fired up the new computer for the first time, ran the Easy Transfer program , pointed to the CDRW disc and the program formated as expected.
when the program was completed and files were apparently transfered and the programs status window closed. and that was it, nothing more.....
I unhid my system files and and searched everywhere with no resolve (sighs..) would one of you fine folks please help me locate my transfered files as the are very important to me.
Thank you again.. I'll check back often

A:Used Windows Easy Transfer but now wheres my files?

In the start menu go to Accessories -> System Tools -> Windows Easy Transfer Reports and open it up.  The Transfer Report will show what has been transferred.  If you click Documents it should show you exactly where it's placed your document files and what they were.

hi . i recently bought this new mother board by Asus, P5RD1-V. the problem is that when i try to install windows xp on my SATA HD, after the initial stage during which the setup copies all the drivers and then gives that option " to install windows XP press enter" plus one or two other options, when i press enter i get this massage that says " setup didnt find any hard drives installed on your system. check to see if any HD is installed .... " and then it goes on to say things like check your drive configuration or the drive health and things like that. all this when at the the bootup it does show the hard drive connected at SATA port 1. !! ? i run seagate diagnostic tool on it and it showes the drive as perfectly healthy. i dont know why is it doing it. the hard disk is spanking brand new. the same goes for the 120GB WD SATA. the interesting thing it has no issue with the good old IDE HD's. i connected my old maxtor IDE hard drive and the setup ran as smooth as it can get. i dont know why setup isent detecting the SATA HD. is it the board or is it somthing else. any ideas !

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

A:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

Tom

Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

I just recently bought a used computer to replace the one I had which died on me. For some reason, my old harddrive isn't being recognized as the main hard drive when I remove the new one and plug my old one in. Both harddrives are recognized when I have my old one plugged up with the extra power and IDE cable, so I was wondering if it is possible to copy the contents of my old drive to the new one and have it where it transfers all of my installed software over without having to reinstall everything?

A:Harddrive to harddrive data transfer?

So what you tried to do is get WinXP to boot after it was installed on a different computer. This usually does not work well unless the Motherboard onthe new computer is almost identical to the old one. At the very least you would want to uninstall all drivers that were istalled as part of the old motherboard then do a repair installation of Windows XP. Then again if your installation of Windows is an OEM version of Windows it is not legal to use it on a second computer even if the second computer is a replacement for the first. If this is a retail copy of Windows then you can do it. You would need also the drivers for the new system.. As far as transfering installed programs from one hard drive to another and have them work properly if at all, it is not likely that you will succeed in doing so as installed programs make changes to the registry so that windows will know where to go look for the files to operate these programs. Just transferring the programs will not make the changes needed to your registry that an installation would make.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822153012

and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem.

It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd

The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.

Hi,

This morning a fan in my case was making strange noises (either CPU or GPU fan I think) and so I turned my computer off. I turned it on a little later and the computer was making a really odd clicking noise, so I unplugged each harddrive in turn to see which was causing it. I removed the problem drive (not the one with my XP installation on) and then turned the computer on again. This time it just said could not detect boot disk. I've tried installing XP again, but it gets as far as loading all the setup files and then my PC reboots. The bios still detects the harddrive still in.

The harddrives are just normal IDE 120gb drives (the removed one is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and the one still in is a Barracuda Seagate). I don't understand why the first stopped working (it is at most 6 months old) and why the 2nd one's installation is not detected (it is only a month or 2 old). Up til today, my computer was working perfectly. At the moment my whole computer is useless and the fan is still making the same weird noise occasionally.

Thanks.

A:One harddrive died, other harddrive's XP not detected

Welcome to Techspot

It sounds like the Drive you removed was the Primary, so the system can't find an MBR.
Also if that is right did you change the Jumper on the Slave left in your box?
Buy a new Fan, why take a chance ?

hey everyone, my mom's computer isnt working correctly. it turns on but it doesnt boot up. nothing shows up on the monitor. she has very important files and links that are saved to her computer that she needs asap.

my first thought was maybe i could access her computer through the router that we share but other websites told me its impossible without remote connection. and we cannot setup connects or access her computer at the moment.

i would like to know if it would be a good idea to take her harddrive out and put it into another computer. id rather not put it into my computer (just in case something goes wrong) but my brother has a laptop and could we put her harddrive in his? just temporarily so we can get to those files.

is that the best idea? to transfer her harddrive? if so is it okay that its going into a laptop and not a desktop computer....

A:transfering harddrive (harddrive problem)

You're best bet it to get a 2.5 Adapter for laptop HDDs then you would take that adapter and connect it to a desktop CD-ROM IDE 2 channel 3.5 Ribbon cable goes into the adapter. There you could transfer files off that drive. That's how it's done in IT repair shop. Below cost $6.99.

can get it off here or try newegg or wherever you want go to a local store to get..
http://www.cablesonline.com/25hdmounkitw.html

It also looks like this various version of the adapter

They all work..

any help would be appreciated
Brian....26sw905

A:make a dual boot pc into a single boot pc ,wheres the bcd stored?

The Vista bootloader and the Win 7 bootloader are the same.

I can't answer your question but my guess would be that the boot files on are on the Win 7 hard drive, if it's the latter install.

I'd probably just install EasyBCD on the Win 7 drive...and then see if it automatically recognizes the Vista install. If not, then manually add the Vista install to EasyBCD, making Win 7 the default. That should (IMO) ensure that Win 7 remains bootable. Then just format/remove the Vista drive.

A simple way to find out...is to temporarily detach the Vista drive...and see if Win 7 boots. If it does, the files are on the Win 7 drive .

A:is harddrive going bad????

Hi, how you doing?

Well based on your facts, it looks like a few things.
1) You could have a corrupted MBR (Master Boot Record) which is preventing a proper boot up.

2) BIOS could be acting up. Check CMOS/RTC as well!

3) OR, Your drive might just be going bad..hopefully it's not.

I had a similar problem with a western digital device. Same symptoms and eventually just died on me. So what I did was call the manufacturer and they sent me another one after sending in the bad one. If you go this way make sure you get an RMA number!

You might want to back up your files in case it is a drive going bad. Other than that, hopefully my suggestions worked and like always there are plenty more ppl to offer suggestions.

Hope you find a solution!

Hello,
I got a used laptop that needs a new hard drive. I found the exact model number that's already in the laptop I just need to buy it. I'm wondering how to reinstall the original OS on the new hard drive.
The new hard drive says it's not formatted. I was thinking about ordering the recovery disc from the manufacture website for my exact laptop model, However it's almost $30 for these disc and I'm not sure if a "Recovery Disc" would work or not. Was wondering would this website work https://wudt.codeplex.com/ ? If I created a bootable usb maybe I don't need the disc?

EDIT: Do I need to format the drive before attempting to reinstall the OS and how? Or will the method of reinstalling the OS automatically format the drive?

A:New Harddrive

First of all, you don't need to order the exact same model hard drive. The same model will work, of course, but you could also take this as an opportunity to install a larger capacity drive (or even a smaller) or even switch to an ssd instead of an hdd. Unless your laptop is more than a few years old, a 2.5" SATA drive of any capacity should work.

The tool you linked to requires you to first have an ISO of an OS disk in order to write it to a USB and make a bootable USB from it. Does the laptop have a Windows sticker on the bottom with a Product Key? If so, you may be able to download an ISO of the OS.

Your best best is probably to order the recovery disk from the manufacturer. Not only will this install the OS, but it will also install all the required drivers and auxiliary programs. Unfortunately, it will also install any bloatware that came from the factory as well.

You do not need to format the drive beforehand.

Very often when I wake up my computer, for a good 5 minutes the harddrive goes completely bozo and the system is extremely unresponsive since (I guess) it is in the process of waking up - in addition, when I look at task manager (even when observing "Show processes from all users") the majority of the RAM (>85%) is "System Idle Processes."

2) Whatever is happening, why isn't it displayed?

My two hard drives are getting super hot. So hot u cant touch them. Is this an issue? They are no where near full. Both are 150GB drives.

A:Hot Harddrive???

Yes, it's an issue. Generally, hard drives should run at approximately 60C or less. On the machine I am on right now the drive is running at 31C. Your chassis MAY have poor front intake ventilation.

I've been using these coolers for a few years, and have found them to be very good.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835888113

The screws that come with the unit that attach the cooler frame to the drive are terrible, but it hasn't presented a problem for me since I have several hundred screws available. You should be able to find replacement screws for a few cents at most any hardware
or electronics store.

I don't know how much space you have available, but they do take up almost as much space as a drive. If you have a large hard drive cage, then there should be no problems installing them.

Also, check you chassis and see if you have a position for mounting a chassis fan in front of the drives.

I then let the test run. After the test is complete, the computer restart and start to load windows and then it gets to the same consistency check message. When I press a key to skip the test the computer restart again and load to the same message.
Does this sound like a corrupted Win XP installation or a dying harddrive?
This is a customer's computer so I don't know who installed this OS. They just tell me that some guy helped them to reinstall Windows and that the computer don't want to load.
I think the previous installation was Win Vista Basic. The current one is Win XP Pro

I just finished installing a new Western Digital 160G Harddrive. Computer has detected and device manager says it is working properly. How do I assign a drive letter? It doesn't show up in my computer. Thanks in advance.

A:new harddrive help

Go to control panel, admin tools, computer management, disk management, right click on the drive and format it. You can assign a drive name at the format. After that, the drive letter and name should show up in "my computer".

You are better off buying a external usb hard drive enclosure, put the hard drive in it (follow the manufacturers instructions) then you can connect it to any PC using a usb cable and copy your data off.

Does anyone know of any company that fixes harddrives? my harddrives platters and everything are fine. its just that my sata port decided to melt off, and now sata cables will not stay connected to it. i just lost a bunch of data, and the broken harddrive happens to have a copy of it, but since i cant access it, it cant get the data

A:Where to fix harddrive?

Send it back to the manufacturer. Visit the web site of the maker leave "support" a contact message with the problem.
They should give you a price and shipping instructions.

Worth a try.

Alright I am running windows 2000 pro and the other day I went and tried to get into my bearshare and it said that all of my space was gone to download so I went into my computer and checked and there was nothing left on my hard drive not a single byte but about 2 days before it had 7 gigs
SO I was like OK went and deleted a lot of songs came back an hour later all the freespace I had cleared was taken up I run adaware no spyware run registry cleaner no problems I have no clue what could be wrong. any help would be appreciated, I am at a loss to why this happened

Alright I am not talking about that program I am talking about why my computer is having stuff put on harddrive with out me doing anything. such as I clear my zip folder come back in an hour and I have no free space on my computer like somehting is being put on my comp or something I have no idea this does not relate to and p2p programs I wanted to know if its virus or spyware or what the hell it could be

A:can anyone help me with harddrive

If you run P2P applications, you can expect such problems. You are sharing your system with god knows who.

Remove bearshare and any other P2P, scan with an up to date AV program, Adaware, Spybot and see if that helps.

Or post a HiJackThis log, once all P2P has gone.

Heres the 411. my friend bough a 120G harddrive. hes not much of a computer guy and would probably be to scared to even open up his pc. so i pluged it on, wen u re-boot a screen comes up with something like Disk1: 40G, Disk2: 120G, Slot1vd, Slot2:Cd-r and then to press enter to save changes. i press enter. but wen u go to My Computer it aint there. but if you RightClick C: > Properties > Hardware. u can clearlly see that there's another harddrive on there. The harddrive didnt come with any software and he's running on Windoze XP. wat can i do?

A:Where my Harddrive go?

Whats happening is if you don't have a valid partition windows cannot recognise the drive.
You need a floppy boot disk, from a: prompt type fdisk and enter fdisk program will run. From here choose large disk support, switch fixed drives, should be drive 2 (option 4 or 5).
Then you create a partition on the drive, reboot and windows will recognise the drive, remember to format drive before storing information on it.

my daughters dell dimension 8400 harddrive went bad, we ordered a bigger but compatible new one from dell. Its a 500 GB Sats 3 Gbs HD 16mb 7200 rpm 3.5 in caviar blue, we installed it and it is looking for a bootable disk. She lost her os disk that came with the computer . I tried my windows Xp disk, nothing, The hard drive did not come with a disk for setting it up. what do I need to do to get the program running. when you turn it on you get the dell screen and the bios information. then the black screen looking for a bootable disk.

A:new harddrive

Well you don't have a bootable disk. Nothing will change that fact. You will need either the recovery disk that came with the Dell (or buy a new one from Dell...) or a real Windows installation disk.

Hey there everyone, I recently got a new graphics card and a new HDD, I picked up the Radeon Sapphire HD 6950 and a 1TB HDD, but here is the problem I am having right now, my computer is not picking up the HDD which is probably normal, I am uncertain how to even access it at this point because I am new to setting up a new HDD but what I wanted to do is install Windows Vista 64bit and then upgrade it to Windows 7 64bit, but here is the problem my CD/DVD drive does not work and it won't even power on at boot up, and I have tried to unplug it and plug it back in, and I have a secondary cd/dvd drive that won't boot up either.. any ideas?

A:Harddrive and CD/DVD rom

For the DVD DRIVE -Try updating to the latest chipset drivers which will update the storage driver - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
I that doesnt work go here and download and install the Intel Matrix Storage driver - if you get an error and it wont install just skip it as you havent AHCI enabled in the bios - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...17882&lang=eng
Try this filter fix if that doesnt work : Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

To do with the hard drive - type "Create and format hard disk partitions" in the start search and select - find the drive:
To initialize new disks:
In Disk Management, right-click the disk you want to initialize, and then click Initialize Disk.
In the Initialize Disk dialog box, select the disk(s) to initialize. You can select whether to use the master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partition style. Choose Master boot record.
Note The disk is initialized as a basic disk.

Additional considerations
New disks appear as Not Initialized. Before you can use a disk, you must first initialize it. If you start Disk Management after adding a disk, the Initialize Disk Wizard appears so you can initialize the disk.

You then need to create a new partition (volume) and format it and finally if you are going to install vista and upgrade it to W7 the new disk needs to be marked as active (right click selected drive for all options).

from the loads of reading that i have done on this and other boards, i have come to the conclusion that the harddrive on my friend's IBM thinkpad is toasted.

when i did a diagnostic on it, it came up with dev 017, err 22, fru ...

and of course when i regular load it, it asks me to supply a working disk/device and then press f1, and comes up with an I9990305 error.

soooo, she has asked me to go ahead and buy a new harddrive.

it is an IBM thinkpad 600e type 2645-5au.
the harddrive "was" a 6.4GB ATA/IDE model DK239A-65 hitachi hard disk drive (i am just reading this off the disk)

and i told her that it would cost her about $100 to replace it.

are there any suggestions for who to buy from or what kind to get? i am not having much luck finding a list of compatible thinkpad harddrives. because from my understanding, this particular harddrive is no longer being made (IBM P/N :37L5768)

oh, and everything else checked out fine on the diagnostic.

A:need new harddrive

It will probably cost you more than $100 to replace a laptop hard drive. I would look on IBM's site first and then go looking at online stores. All drives for laptops are not the same and will not work in all laptops so be careful.

If my hard drive in my HP died, and I wanted a new one, if I went and bought the same brand, and type just more capacity, could I just put it in and it would work if it was brand new? Someone told me something about not being able to just throw a hard drive in a computer. I am seeing if this is true.

Thanks,
Ryan

I bought 200GB Seagate and it's broken the week after I use it.
I also had 200GB maxtor on my other computer, and it's just died yesterday after a year and 2 months.
What the hell is wrong with the HD that I bought.

Please let me know which one is a good brand that you can think of.

A:Which harddrive is the best one.

Hi,

Have you ever been hit by lightening??????????? You have had such bad luck. I have used most of the drives listed and Maxtor is (you asked for a personal opinion) heads and shoulders above the rest. Besides that, their return service is quick and fair if you have problems. I will always choose their products as long as they serve well. I have run some of their drives for six or seven years so far without problems, so I vote for Maxtor.

This has probably been asked before. I presently have a mother board with Sata Drive connectors. Is there anyway to use an SSD hard drive with this mother board?

A:SSD Harddrive

Yes. The connections on an SSD are the same as any other sata hard drive.
