Windows 7 User folder changed to Public?

Q: Windows 7 User folder changed to Public?

I installed Avast AV when Norton expired. In order to activate the internet security stuff, I had to install the upgraded library file, blah, blah, blah. In order to do this, I had to show hidden folders. Having only recently begun my foray into Windows 7 (coming from XP), I was flying a bit blind. I must have hit the wrong thing. After I was able to see hidden folders, install the library file to Avast and continue on with the reboot, the desktop came up wiped clean of my documents/pics, etc and my C:\Users\Susan folder has disappeared and is now called Public. Next, I thought I may have switched my user from Susan to Public, but I have not.

What did I do? I am so confused and feeling like a complete novice at this point....

Thanks,
Susan

A: Windows 7 User folder changed to Public?

Found the solution. I must have checked the box to hide the folder. I found the option to show hidden files/folders (in the control panel? that's dumb) and everything reappeared.... I knew it was something simple and stupid....

Hi all,

Thanks in anticipation for any replies that you all may provide.

I had someone else install windows on my laptop and they entered a windows username of 'sony' during windows registration.

I later went on to change the windows username to: 'Ishan'

However, when I went back to the 'Users' folder in C:\ , I noticed that the folder name was still called sony (which was the name entered during registering windows). I was wondering if there is a way to change it to my current windows user name.

Even when I install any new applications, the setup program asks me: "Install for all users or only for current user: sony (whereas the current user is actually Ishan Nagar).

Or is there any way I can register windows again without losting any data and settings I have on my computer?

Hope you all can help me with this issue.

Thanks and Regards,

Ishan.

A:Windows Account Name Changed, not Folder name in 'User'

Hello Ishan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The only way to change the C:\Users\(user-name) folder is to create a new administrator account, copy the contents of the old account's C:\Users\(user-name) folders into the corresponding new account's C:\Users\(user-name) folder, and delete the old account from within the new account after everthing checks out ok.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I think I've tried every option in Windows Help without success. I have pictures in Public Pictures. I log into another account on the same computer. I can see that the folder is shared. I cannot see/open the pictures.

I'm sure the answer is easy, but I'm at my wit's end. Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Did you verify that the user has the appropriate permissions for the public folder? By default anyone is supposed to have read access but that could have gotten messed up.

Running Outlook 2000 with Exchange 2000. I am trying to set a rule on a public folder to notify someone that they have a message waiting for them. I saw all the normal options and I don't want to send them the whole email as that could eventually take up too much space I just want to send them a notification.

I tried the rules wizard but couldn't figure it out, does anyone have a quick reference to do this?

Hello,

Recently, I changed my user folder name because it was ugly (C:/Users/bobh_012 ---> C:/Users/Bob Hopkins), and ever since I am getting errors. I signed in after the change, and was greeted by a "temporary profile" info message. I tried changing the name back, but it's no good... I still have my files, but am unable to do anything on my secondary account (the one I renamed). Is there a way to fix this, or have I f***ed up my accounts for good?

Thanks,

A:Help! Changed user folder name and getting trouble...

Hey mate,

Yes, renaming the user folders is bad. I would suggest creating a similar user account with the name you want, logging in to it, and moving any of the data from the old user account folder that is corrupted into the correct place on your new account, and then deleting the old account.

So Documents would be transferred to documents, etc. You would need to sign in again to any Microsoft account, dropbox, or any similar such sign-in program you may have installed. If you have saved games or such, the saves will be lost, unless you know how to transfer them over. But, as I've mentioned earlier, your documents, etc will be safe so long as you transfer it from the old user folder to the new.

Outlook, if you have it, may need to be exported/imported first, along with any favorites from Internet Explorer. Since you can't get back to the corrupted user account, you can search for the outlook .pst file in the old user account folder (usually), and favorites are also in there.

Need any further step-by-step directions, and I'll be glad to help

A:My user named folder has changed the name

I am thinking that there was a problem with your profile on the remote system.
Have you logged onto that same machine before?
I am not a netwrok aministrator but this tells me that there was a problem while updating your userprofile or creating your user profile on the remote machine.
This cannot be editted by you because you are logged into this syetem and the folder name is read-only.
You will have to contact the administrator of that system to check on your local profile there before you log on again.

I changed my user name but that in the Users' folder remains unchanged. Is it possible to change that name to be the same as the new user ID on log-on screen?

A:User name changed but that in Users' folder is not.

You may need to make a NEW account, then delete the old one.
Changing the User Account name will not change the name in the Users folder.
Warning! Never change the name of the folder manually, or applications that depends on User Data will not work properly.

Does anyone have any ideas about what might have gone wrong?

I have a new computer with Vista Home Premium and I moved some of the Public Folders (Public Documents, Music, Pictures) from C to D, as instructed by Microsoft at this link When you try to move a public folder in Windows Vista, the Move button may be missing

I want to be able to share these folders from their new location with the other computers in my home network, so I turned on the Public Folder sharing in the Network and Sharing Center.

However, in the Network and Sharing Center the only public folders recognized are the ones still at the original location - C:\Users\Public\Favorites and C:\ ...\Public Desktop (hidden files) and ...\Recorded TV.

I have spent a few hours searching for the answer to this on the internet. In this version of Vista Home Premium, there is NOTthe option to change the letter of the directory in the registry by changing the key called public as suggested by the How To Geek at this link Move the Public Folder in Windows Vista :: the How-To Geek

I was transfering files from my C:\Windows.old\Users\Public to my new \\PATRICK-DESKTOP\Users\Public folder. I noticed the transfer was going to take like 20 minutes and this didn't seem right to me. I canceled the transfer and instead transfered the files to C:\Users\Public to see if it made a difference, and in fact it almost instantly transfered the files over?

So what is going on here, aren't these locations are both the same thing? Why was it taking a long to to transfer when it was going to \\PATRICK-DESKTOP\Users\Public?

Is it actually sending the data over the network in order to locate the \\PATRICK-DESKTOP\Users\Public share and then just coming back over the network and therefor becoming a network transfer instead of a local transfer?

A:Transfering files from windows.old to public folder, odd issue

Yes. That's right. What you said is correct.

For local transfer always give the directory path instead of UNC path.

For local transfer, the files are copied from one folder to another folder as a normal copy.

For network transfer, the files are copied over the TCP/IP protocol which sends the files as packets even though it is within the same machine. This has attributed for the delay in copying the files.

I have two network cards in my PC. One of them connects to the internet while the other connects to my home network.

The issue is enabling public folders for the home network in "Network and Sharing Center" enables public folders for the public network also. In other words Windows grants permission to people on the internet to access my c:\users\Public folder.

Disabling public folders under public network settings disables public folders for the home network also, preventing people on my local area network from accessing my PC.

Refer this screenshot if you don't get my problem: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/6878074832/

In other words Windows grants permission to people on the internet to access my c:\users\Public folder.

A:Cannot turn off "Public Folder Sharing" for public network

I think it's because you set up a Public Network as your first interface. Because of this it may not be possible to turn off the Public file sharing option.

You don't need to use both interfaces to share the wireless connection with your wife. You can do that with a single interface by just setting up a Home Network on one of the interfaces then sharing out from that interface using software to make it easier like Connectify.

This might have something to do withy having used a USB iBurst modem which somehow used to network locations - wireless and Local Area Connection 2.
As I understand it I need Local Area Connection (Ethernet) to be Home in order to be able to share files with my BluRay player through a router.
But it is Unidentified Network, Public. The location is not clickable.
I connect to my ADSL modem via WiFi because of there being a passage between the PC and the telephone point.
The router has DHCP switched off, otherwise I lose my Internet connection.
Using 192.168.2.x/24 for the router network. The WiFi is on 192.168.1.x/24.

A:Ethernet port is Public and cannot be changed

You don't need to set it to home to share files. Why are you trying to set it to home? Did you lose any functionality?

Those network settings are correct, perhaps a service or two is not started?

XP SP3 which has been installed for at least a year. Last night a storm came through which killed the power for longer than my UPS could handle. When I returned to login this morning it was acting as if this was the first time I'd ever logged in. My desktop, start menu and programs were gone.

My username is ryan and my machine is called surge. We don't use a domain server.

I did a little looking around and found in C:\Documents and Settings that there was a directory ryan with all the files you would expect AND a new directory ryan.SURGE which is what I was now using. I suspect some networking setting has been altered, but I don't know what to search for and how to fix it.

Thank you for your ideas.

A:Windows changed my user name

Did you try just restarting?

Your computer shut down improperly, and it damaged your user profile. Sometimes a simple restart is all that's needed. Otherwise, you'll need to copy your files from the old profile to the new profile, and reconfigure your programs.

I upgraded from Win 7 a few weeks back, but it ran painfully slow and I didn't have the time to get into it, so I went back to 7 using my latest image file. Now that I do have some time - I did the upgrade and clean install method, no speed issues whatsoever now.

During the first upgrade I used my Microsoft account, but I didn't like the way it only used the first five letters of my account name for the User directories. The second time around I used a local account and everything worked fine. Now, two days later I do a restart and my local account has been replaced with the Microsoft account that I used the first time around. But - the User directories are still named for the local account I used.

I have no problem with this, but what I don't get is how it happened, considering I reformatted both my hard drives prior to doing the clean install. As far as I can tell everything seems to be working fine as I downloaded a few small files and they saved in the Users/Dwayne/Downloads directory. My only concern is whether this will cause me grief down the road. Just starting to install all my software & don't really want to do this all over again.

Hi,

I would like to streamline a user account on my Win 7 PC so it maximises performance. This is due to an overheat problem I have been experiancing since my Win 7 upgrade.
I have created a new user account that I would like to run an application really smoothly so have taken some performance tweek advice and turned off the aero peak function, and most of the fancy visual apperance settings, set some services to manual and assumed it would only apply these settings for the current user, but it applies the settings to all users registered on the computer.

Is it possible to set up two (or more) different accounts so one could have all the default features and visual apperance settings as standard (for email, Web browsing, media centre, gadgets, all that nice stuff), and onther user account be bare bones, no nice graphics and visuals, less defautl services but run high demand programs better? This type of solution would be of great benefit to me. Can it be done with Win 7?

Many thanks,

Hello Matt it appears you can only Enable or Disable for All Users - How to Allow or Prevent Changing Window Color and Appearance in Windows 7 but if this prevents damage to your computer than it will at least serve a purpose.
If you could try to explain in more detail the why, when your computer started overheating than more knowledgeable members than I may be able to help with that pressing problem too as some may have experienced the same issue and found a resolution that may be helpful and prevent hardware failure.

Hi everyone..
I'm fairly technical and was a network and tech Director for a few years so have some familiarity with prior Windows versions but Win 7 is a bit new to me. I went to login today, and my login picture had been changed. Looking in Windows Event Viewer under Security, I can see it occurred at 12:25 in the morning. I was on another computer at that time, and running a utility from Microsoft on the PC in question that just collects system information.

I was trying to figure out why it changed and reviewing the event logs. I don't see the reason, only that an account change occurred. I replicated it by changing my picture again to another one, and the same system event occurred confirming its identity.

So basically, I had a flower as the login picture. On its own, it changed to a fish. I didn't make the change. I wasn't even using this machine at that time; however a Windows utility from MS was running -- but -- I reran that same utility tonight (it's one that just reports system usage) and it did not change the picture so I believe that is coincidence.

So my question is, why would Windows 7 change the default logon picture for a user on its own to something else? To help with information the utility that MS had me run was the Microsoft Product Support Reports.

There are also multiple instances on this computer, the one where the picture changed on its own, of another PC that was running Windows 2000 logging into it as a SYSTEM, and then loggin... Read more

Problem: It seems that most of my files are still listed under the old "file path" instead of a file path utilizing the new name of the user account. This is an administrator account. For example: my custom dictionary has a file path of C:\Users\JPL\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\UProof\CUSTOM.DIC - when it should be C:\Users\PWM\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\UProof\CUSTOM.DIC - Should I just leave well enough alone since everything seems to be working okay or will this create problems in the future? Hello Windows8use, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check to see if they may still be in the Recycle Bin to restore.

If not, then see if you may be able to do a system restore using a restore point dated before you deleted these folders to hopefully fix this.

A twist on the creation of user folders on a drive other than C: in Win 7 Ultimate. Does anyone know if one could designate a user folder location such as E:\Data instead of using the users name and being a subdirectory of "Users". I am the ONLY one on my computer - and it would seem much easier to look to the top folder in the E drive than clicking thru E:, users, name, documents, project. I fully realize that I can set up shortcuts, but when you are in an application that wants to place a file somewhere else and presents you with an explorer windows it is a pain. The only method I thought of is using redirection with symbolic links. Every time I try to use symbolic links, I end up with something other than I anticipated. What the...

Long story short; I install Windows clean, put my own name as admin; the only user.
I use, let's call it 'password_one' for clarity.

Fine. Then once I'm in Windows I login with my MS account (which is also my Gmail address) and give it 'password_two' as it is my MS account password.

Result: now my one and only user account is my MS account, my own name, but with my Gmail adress...and I have to login to Windows as well with my MS account password, 'password_two'.

So windows decided to change it for me? Just deleted the old password and switched to using my MS account one?

OK...so nevermind, everything works fine...except it doesn't!

I can't apparently install all programs because I HAVE NO RIGHTS to edit the system32 folder contents any longer. It just says 'you must login as administrator to do this' and when I click OK it just says 'access denied'.

But I'm still the ONLY user and the ONLY admin in Users - only not with the original password but which Windows changed there! There is NO way to login as anything else, and it won't accept my original 'password_two'

So...the plot deepends...I try to do ANYTHING in policy editor for instance I get this:

Namespace 'Microsoft.Policies.Sensors.WindowsLocationProvider' is already defined as the target namespace for another file in the store.
File
C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\Microsoft-Windows-Geolocation-WLP Adm.admx, line 5, colum 110.

WTF????

How do I regain control of my PC??? What is going on here???

Hello,

Ever since i changed the owner for my partition containing the windows folder, ive been getting all sorts of weird trouble, like the thrash bin has been damaged(but that is fixed now)

Been trying to install updates and files, but they all point at "permission issues"(most likely caused by not having permissions to run their temp created install packages)

Tried MS FixIT solutions.

Off topic: Not sure if this is in the correct section

Any thoughts?

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7. He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed.

He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:\users\All Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

I've done quite a bit of searching and have came up empty. Before I said it couldn't be done, I'm wondering if anyone's heard of a way to do this.

A:Win 7 single user, merging users\All Users, Default User, Public, etc?

Just curious, but why does this annoy him so much? Surely it's not that complicated a system and all of his documents etc are stored in the same place, with more or less easy to use shortcuts to these directories placed throughout Windows 7?

Plse forgive as I'm sure this has been asked B4. Yet, a quick search didn't yield the answer I think I'm looking for. No one but me uses this computer. I think I understand there needs to be a Admin and a lower ranking user account. So, how do I delete all users (public and default included) and just have one user that elevates to adim when necessary? Thx in advance for replies or links to the topics that may help

A:Public user delete

Hello KT, and welcome to Seven Forums.

"Public" and "Default" are not user accounts. They are system folders that should not be deleted.

"Default" is what is used as a template to create a new user account from.

"Public" is just a set of public folders used to be able to easily share files with all users if you like since all users have access to the Public folders by default. If you do not wish to share files in the Public folders, then you could turn off public folder sharing to prevent it though.Public Folder Sharing - Turn On or Off in Windows 7

I remember with Vista, this folder had multiple entries and they were not mine(probably came with new laptop, like bloat ware?). I was clueless then (with Vista)what that folder was about...and I'm still in the dark(with W7) .

I just discovered today, with W7, this folder is completely empty. (Why?).

I don't remember if I shared it(with Vista), but now I realize I have options...to share or not. I feel silly sharing an empty folder. So I opted to turn sharing OFF . Is being selfish(not sharing) disadvantageous to my system?

A:What's The Public Folder?...and what to do with it?

Hello Pappi,

The "Public" folders, are basically folders that the public (all users) have full access to by default. They basically set to be shared by "Everyone" making it easier to share files between users on the local PC and network easy to do by simply putting a file in one of the Public folders.

Empty Public folders do not take up any space. They are not a security risk since they only have access to what you place in the Public folders.

It's just a personal choice if you want to have Public folder sharing turned on or off.

Here's some more details below on all this if you like.

I stupidly didn't fully understand what the Public Folder was and deleted it. I thought that by doing that no one would have access to my personal files. Well, I soon discovered that I shouldn't have done that.

#1. Can I get it back from ?
#2. Now I can't put anything into the Library/Documents Folder and don't understand why.
#3. If I can't retrieve that Public Folder can I somehow re-create another sub folder.

I didn't look in the Recycle Bin. Would it have gone there?

I should have known better since I just got Win 7 but it seemed the smart thing to do at the time.

When I setup this Gateway E Series, I created an account called USER. After restarting this device and working with it, I now have a set of folders for USER but now the default id of USER utilizes folders with USER.MACHINENAME and as such the settings from the initial config are lost.

1) What did I do to cause the folder change to include the machine name?

2) How can I get back to the original set of folders?

Notes - We are not using a Windows domain. This is a lab PC that runs on a Netware network. I autheticate with the network ID/PW and then access Windows with a username of USER.

A:User directory changed to user.machine name

That happens if you delete a user account and leave the files, and later create an account with the same name. The name is spread throughout the registry, so I'm not sure if it's all that easy to change it back, I've never tried.

We are using roaming profiles, win xp on clients and windows 2003 on the

I have a user who complains that the user's settings are not retained - when
somebody else uses their computer. For example the resolution is affected.

Is their anyway to lock down those settings so a default is used.

A:User Settings get changed when another user logons

The last I understood, hardware changes are NOT controlled by the Roaming profile. Any local hardware changes will affect ALL users.

Depends on what the DEFAULT is and if ANYONE can make hardware changes.

Hi.
I would like to move my public and user folders to my second partition. After lack of succes with googling for win7 tutorial of how to do this, i tried this tutorial. However now it is changed in the registry however the computer does not seem to register it.
Here you can see that i mannually moved all the files then changed the registry entry and then created the extra text document to see if i succeded and as you can see I did not.

I would also like to move my other user files (C:\Users\"user") to my 2nd partition (D:\"user"). I know this can be done by properties->location-> move however it would be nice if this would be done automaticly when i add a new user account.
I don't mind trying things in my registry but a little guidance as to what to edit would be nice.

I've put this in this forum, even though it has Win98/Me included, due to the fact that its an Beta version, and not a full version.

Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX 9.0 includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs.

Operating System - Windows 98 & 2000 & Windows Me, Win XP

This is an unsupported Pre-Release version of DirectX 9.0 and may contain bugs or issues that prevent correct operation of DirectX applications. The DirectX 9.0 runtime cannot be uninstalled. We recommend that this pre-release only be installed on Windows ME or Windows XP systems, and that users create a “System Restore” point before installing. My situation is:

When I run the task manager, and let him show me all my current processen. I get the running processes
of my account. But the public user account also has quite some processes running.

My question is:

Is there a way to delete the public user account / stop the public user account from running processes.
Since I am the only user of this pc, it is quite unneccesary for having a public user account with running processes.

Thanks in advance.

If you click the Services tab, you can right-click any items in the Status column and change them, if that's what you want to do.  I'd strongly suggest you make a full system backup to an external hard drive before you start changing things though.  Personally I just upgraded from 4 to 8 GB of RAM and left well enough alone.  Disabling some of those tasks could cause unpredictable results you might have a hard time dealing with.

Good luck.

I'm on Windows Vista - 32 bit.

I apologize for not understanding the terms (and whatnot) enough to know how to ask the question shortly (in less than a hundred words), but ... here's what I know:

I don't care about "sharing" because I'm only dealing with one machine for now, but the issue ... is about sharing. It's about sharing files from one USER ... to another on this one machine. All in the same Vista system. I'm the administrator. I've got two kids, each with their own "username." One has a password. One doesn't. I was on LeAnn's (with a password) user weeks ago and she was in the middle of something (or I was lazy or just curious - I don't remember but it might have been just curiosity on my part) I wanted to access one of my word files from HER user (without leaving her user and logging into mine).

So I did the admin override thing.

And ever since ... I haven't been able to KEEP her from reading all the "word" files in the admin user. It's got to be just a checkmark in a box somewhere but I can't find it. Please help.

I used to have messed up file sharing settings because the printer wouldnt work but they were alright because whoever looked into my Computer in the network would only find a Public folder. (w/o passwords)

Now, i reinstalled windows, and whenever somenoe looks into my computer under the network, they have to enter a password and once they do, they can access not only the public folder, but all my documents under my folder. (Users/MyStuff)

the sharing folder is Users so people can see everything inside Users if they have my password.

What i want to do is let them only access the Public folder WITHOUT my password.

That way, if i have something that needs to be transferred, i'll just drop it on in the public folder, and someone can take it.

I am confused in terms of how to reach these settings and i would appreciate it if anyone could offer a solution.

Hi,

I'm on a home network. Its all been configured. My firewall has been configured. Just wondering how to put files in the public folder. I understand you can just copy files in there but i dont want to because it'll take up space. Is there a way to make individual files or folders share themselves into the public folders without duplicating themselves from the original to save space? Because i dont want two from the same file, ie one in the public folder and the other in the original folder.

Also, i use vista and my other network computers are on xp. I noticed on one of them, i can give it files and but i cannot take files from it onto my computer. I understand it must be a sharing setting on that computer but im not sure where to go to fix it since its xp and im a vista person now. If someone could assist me in those two issues would be greatly appreciated.

There is no option to delete either of the drives if I right click on the drive in Windows Explorer, just a Disconnect option. I have not been able to work out how to delete one of them and retain the other.

Hello,
I've recently been having some trouble with installing and running a few programs. (skype and rosetta stone are two that it happens). When I open them my entire computer just freezes. I have a feeling that it might have something to do with my Public Folders. A little while back I was trying to fix them because they appeared as just standard yellow folders, instead of the folders with the image on it. However, I could not get all of them to change to the imaged folder. My public desktop stayed as a normal yellow folder.

I did this fixing by following a website:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/172301-public-folder-icons-restore-default-icon.html

The website basically had me do shell commands, and replace the desktop.ini file for each folder...It just so happens that this website was designed for windows vista, not windows 7, so I think that I messed something up. Cause ever since then my programs have not been running correctly.

There are separate Advanced file sharing settings which refer specifically to the Public folders so that needs to be enabled.

Besides that you should make sure that you have enabled sharing for the Public folders by going to C:>Users>Public folder, and enable sharing through the Sharing tab. You should also make sure that the C:>Users folder is shared out through the Sharing tab as well.

I wanted to move the Public Folder from C:\Users to D:\, so I simply copied the folder, delete the original, and created a symbolic link (with -mklink-). A little knowledge was a dangerous thing - apparently I should have used -robocopy- to ensure the copy of Public had the correct characteristics. So, is there a way to fix D:\Public so that it has the correct permissions of a "Public" folder? If not, is there a way to recreate the original C:\Users\Public? I am not concerned about any data in this folder, as there was (so far) none there.

Apologies if this has been addressed here before, I tried searching the forums but with no luck. Thanks.

I assume you already have your computers in the same Homegroup. If so, you should be able to right click the folder you want to share, go to "Share with" in the context menu, and should be able to select either Read or Read/Write.

This is dead simple really even though most people say it can't be deleted.
Start you computer in safe mode and log on as administrator if prompted.
Go to my computer>local disk>users
Right click public and delete.
In the left pane left click on documents library.
Where it says 2 locations left click and delete the public folder and close.
Follow the last 2 steps for each folder in libraries.
Job done.

I just set up my Public folders to share files across my home network and the Public folder already has lots of files in it that I didn't put there.

For example, Public Desktop has shortcuts to Adobe Reader etc. Another folder called Games has the full installations of some of my games. I don't want these shared!

When I deleted some of them, they were also deleted from my real desktop. Not good.
When I clicked on Share and tried to Unshare one of these folders, it wouldn't let me.

Three questions:
1) How did they get there in the first place?
2) How can I keep this from happening in the future?
3) Since deleting some of them also deleted them from my computer, how can I remove these files from the Public sharing area without messing up the installation on my computer?

I was not at home when this started so I do not have a good history. By the time I arrived home from work, all desktop icons were gone, Windows was not able to find my background photos. Looking through my system, all documents, photos and videos have been moved from our User folders to Public Folders.

We have run MBAM, Avira, Stinger and CC Cleaner - all find nothing. There may have been some issues initially, but I just can't stop my husband from "trying" stuff before I get home. I do not have, nor did I see any of the logs. Feels more like a "hack" but I'm afraid it's just malware designed to look like a hack - cause really - we're boring, there's 'nothing to see here'.

I want to move my files, but also don't really want to do anything until the real issue can be resolved.

I searched and could not find a similar problem - googled it as well and all the responses point to user error rather than anything else.

We are running Windows 7 Professional. I can't even open the documents folder at this point, only the photos and videos.......

This is the first time I have run into this and I'm stumped...

I noticed while in my User folder while organizing my files and folders that it said at the bottom (two locations) I then checked and found that there are links to all my files and folders in the Public as well as my User folders. Are these the same files in each folder or does Win7 make a duplicate copy of each of my files meaning I have twice as much info on my hard drive. As this is my personal PC with no other users I see no need for these "Public" files. If I delete the Public Folder will this also delete the files from my User Folder?

A:Win7 Public & User Folders Query?.

Your personal Libraries include the corresponding Public folders (Pictures, Videos, etc.). A Library is not another copy of a file/folder, but a collection of ones you include in that Library. See here.Note that the Documents Library is different from the regular Documents folder, as you can include anything in the Library but actually have to move something into your Documents for it to show up there. And deleting the Public folder will do no good, as the files will just come back. Believe me, I've tried. They don't take up much space, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

What in the world is going on here? I can see my pictures and the directory via these two programs, but Windows Explorer does not show the folder or the pictures.

A:Public Picture Folder Hidden

Stop the Cozi screensaver and put up a different one. One that doesn't show pix. Reboot the PC. See what happens now. Let us know.

do u think it is safe to delete the entire 'public folder', if i had already safely disabled Win7's library system from my os? on the navigation pane i no longer have favorites & library.

just assume i will never want to touch library, will never have another user account attach to this pc, and never have this pc join any network.

I have a problem in a lab on Dell Optiplex 745 computers. In this lab, there are 29 computers originally running Vista SP2. I cloned them with a configured Vista image made for this lab. After I cloned these computers, I discovered on 15 of them, the Public Desktop folder is missing. All of the other Public folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, etc...) are visible. This is happening to all profiles (Admin, teacher, student) accounts. It doesn't matter who is logged on to any of the 15 computers. This is NOT a single profile corruption issue.

I have Show Hidden files, folder, drives, and I unchecked the 3 Hide..... boxes. It doesn't restore the Public Desktop Folder.

I have tried use a REG file to merge the two together. Nothing.

I have tried to search (shellublic/desktop) for Public Desktop folder. Nothing.

I have restarted the computer.

I have tried to use a RESTORE POINT but it only goes back to 2 weeks ago.
I have tried to use the REPAIR option but that didn't solve my problem.
I am performing ALL of these tests under an admin account. Since there is student files on these 15 computers, I cannot re-clone these computers nor can I perform a repair on these computers. I don't want to risk the loss of data. There has to be way to restore the Public Desktop folder WITHOUT cloning or repairing these computers.

I have tried to logon to one of these computers as LOCAL ADMIN to fix the problem. Also, I have tried Administrator account to ... Read more

Here is a thread that I participated in a while ago. I suggested System Restore which you already tried. The thread may give you some other ideas. Sorry about your problem, but in all other respects I wish you a Happy New Year.

I checked my network sharing center and network discovery, file sharing is on, and password protected sharing is off.

I checked the public folder, the icon has a lock sign on it, every time I try to change it from read only to write, it doesn't change but stays as read only

How do I change the permissions for my public folder with a lock on it?

A:Other users can't copy into public folder

The easiest way I know for this is to simply navigate to the public folder right click - properties - security
Then you'll have to give the guest or everyone group full permissions.

I have just looked in my computer and noticed that somehow that I have acquired Public Folders and pictures.

I have three computers and noticed that I have access to them.

Whilst I do not mind that they have access to my computer - when I have a picture that I wish to have saved to my computer - I just wish the default just to be to my location.

I also do not wish to loose any pictures.

It says that it has three locations - I do not even know which computer it is on and how to navigate to it, so I just wish to decide myself where to put it.

Can anyone please assist?

A:How to change the public folder options

Hello Melissa,

The "My...." folders with shortcut arrows on them are not real folders, but only junction points for backwards compatibility for older programs that point to you real "My..." user folders. I would recommend to set you hidden files to no longer show so that you do not mistakenly use or do something to them.Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide
In your screenshots above, you are only viewing files from the "Music" library on only your computer. Each default library includes your "My..." user folder and "Public" folder for it. For example, the "Music" library will have your "C:\Users\(user-name)\My Music" and "C:\Users\Public\Public Music" folders by default. If you like, read the tutorials below for more on this to help.Library - Include a Folder
Library - Remove a Included Folder

Hope this helps,

Hello,

I'm using Home Premium x64. I can see my XP machines on my home network and access their public folders; however, they can see my Vista machine but not the public folders (the window is blank).

When I try to turn on Public Folder Sharing in Vista I receive an "Unspecified error" box. Network Discovery and File Sharing are ON.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

A:Can't Turn On Public Folder Sharing

I also noticed that I don't have the "Share..." option when I right-click a folder in Explorer. The place where it's supposed to be is blank.

Anyone know what's going on?

I've done a lot of googling and no one else seems to have this problem.

Thanks.

Hi, a few months ago, i deleted my public folder in my C/Users/ and now i can't install anything like Microsoft Office or Itunes , and i can't update Java or Adobe Flash Player and many more! I tried going to a restore point but none were early enough. I have a 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium Acer Aspire. I would really appreciate if someone gave me a hand Thanks!

A:Deleted Public Folder And Now I Can't Install Anything

Reinstall the OS or do a Repair install. Then do NOT delete the Public folder in the User folder. That is placed there by Windows for a purpose.

I have a user who is the only one having a problem with this calendar. There is a calendar setup in Public Folders and 20 or 30 user's have access to it. When she accesses it using the Outlook 2000 client all of the appt's and stuff are srewed up. When she accesses it using OWA everything is fine. Just for fun I logged into my PC as her and setup her profile and the problem in the client persisted. I was surprised as I thought it was a problem on her computer. It doesn't look that way at all now. I was thinking of renaming her local Windows 2K user profile and than logging off and logging back on as her so that a new local Windows 2K user profile would be created on that machine. I would than create her Outlook profile again and see what happens. Any other ideas? Again, she is the only user having this problem. The calendar is fine on everyone else's computer. Thanks for your help.

Help!

Within the document libraries there appear to be a number of default folders For Example
PICTURES
My Pictures
Public Pictures

Whilst transferring all my picture files across from my old laptop I seem to have deleted the public pictures folder within my personal library. After a bid of searching around I have found the Public Pictures folder under the "public" area of the C: directory. It appears to only be missing only in my profile account (other profiles are also unaffected).

My question is how do I restore this folder? If I copy and paste the source public pictures folder I appear to be making a complete copy, rather than a shortcut type link to the files.
Many thanks.

A:How to Restore Public Pictures Folder

Hello No Idea, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It sounds like you just removed the Public folder from only your library. If so, then you should be able to just add it back to be included in the library.

I am running Exchange server 5.5. A couple of months ago a few public folders were deleted and the now need to be restored. I have regular backups of exchange on tape.
How would I go about restoring the public folders that have been deleted? Do I need a a dedicated restore server for this?

Thanks,

I have a windows 2003 with exchange 2003 sp2 installed. I recently found out that it is not possible to reply or forward mails from the public folder using OWA.

A bit of googling lead me to the following where it is mentioned:

http://searchexchange.techtarget.com/generic/0,295582,sid43_gci1256505,00.html#

By design, unless you are accessing OWA through a front-end server (and not directly via a back-end server), you will not be able to use the Reply, Reply All, or Forward functions for messages contained in public folders. While you'll be able to reply to and forward all messages in your mailbox regardless of how you access OWA, unless you go through an Exchange 2003 front-end server, you will not be able to take these actions for public folder messages.Click to expand...

Is there any work around to this?

Thanks

I would like to create a link from a public calendar and put it in my personal folder, so far the only thing I have been able to do with it was to copy and paste into my personal folder but when I do that it will not sync with the public calendar.
Is there some way I can do this, I would like to be able to open my calendar tab and view both my personal calendar and the public calendar.
Thanks.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I deleted my public folders a few days ago and now I can't do any updates!

Windows Live stopped working as did Evernote.

I don't want the Public folders and was hoping there is a way to solve this.

BTW, I did all the suggestions suggested on the thread for resetting win updates and ran the Fix It. The updates are also listing as for 32 bit?

Win 7 64 bit Home Premium.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Dapa,

You could try doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this issue started to hopefully fix it.

the pc wiv (xp) can see and open both computers

so my prob is wiv the xp laptop

firewalls are disabled all folders are the default share folders soz if missed N E thing
thanx in advance

A:cannot open public folder on network

On the XP machine with the shared folder do this.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer

If you see this message the following should be done on the computer containing the shared files:

Download the following and install it

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=4544

after installation is complete, click on: Start, All Programs, Windows Resource Kit Tools, Command Shell

Then enter the following commands. (Attention: they are case sensitive.)

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.

Hi, this is may seem to be a bit of a dumb question but I'm having trouble figuring it out on my own. My wife and I have our own respective PCs both with Vista in our home. My PC has three Hard Disks in it. I have our computers networked together through a router. Now I have all of our photographs on one of the hard drives other than my primary OS hard drive to save space. Now I've recently tried to make a shortcut to the photographs on my secondary hard drive, in the public folder and my wife's computer doesn't "see" any shortcuts. Is there any way to run a shortcut to a different drive in the public folder or do I have to physically copy all the photos into the public folder on my primary hard drive in order to make them available via the network? Also does anything you put in your public folder make it so that it's physically taking up space twice on your HDD? Thanks for any help in advance! I appretiate it!

Believe it or not, I'm having trouble sharing the Windows 7 Public folder.

There are two computers on my network: One has Windows 7 and the other has Windows 8. The Windows 7 PC can see the Windows 8 Public folder. The Windows 8 PC cannot see the Windows 7 Public folder.

I do not use a Homegroup.

In the Windows 7 Network and Sharing Center I have the following settings for the "Home or Work" profile:Network discovery is turned on
File and printer sharing is turned on
Public folder sharing is turned on ("Turn on sharing so anyone with network access...")
File sharing connections - Use 128-bit encryption to help protect...
Password protected sharing is turned on.

It seems like everything is setup correctly, and yet when I right-click on the Windows 7 Public folder and go to the Sharing tab, it says the Public folder is "Not Shared"! Maybe I'm misunderstanding something? How can I fix this?
