Windows 7 wont start up, wont restore

Q: Windows 7 wont start up, wont restore

I am so frustrated! emachine only 10 mnths old. when starting gets to the welcome screen and reboots. have run all the scans and system restore - gives me an error System Restore ox8000ffff now it wont even start in safe mode! also had the error Startup Repair offline should I just shoot it!

A: Windows 7 wont start up, wont restore

Do you notice if the screen flashes a quick blue before it restarts? If it does, go back to the Safe Mode menu and select instead Disable automatic restart on system failure. The computer will try then to boot normally. If booting should fail and 'bluescreen', the PC will display it instead of rebooting. If possible, take a picture of it and insert it into your next reply. Otherwise, type in what it says.

Greetings,

I could use some help if possible, Firstly I want to state I probably can fix this issue by reformatating and reinstalling but I dont want to do that, so looking for an alternative option if possible.

Problem: This morning I had a brief 1 second power outage while I was using my computer which forced it to shutdown. It just stood there shutting down for about 15 minutes when i decided to click force shutdown. After restarting, computer ran checkdisk and startuip repair because windows was not loading.

Issues; I ran chkdsk a couple times, lots of bad sectors./index files repairing recovering, but it ends up hanging at stage 4 at a certain spot. I left it running at that spot for over 5 hours and just stood there(I went to sleep and woke up at same spot). I booted with windows 7 cd and tried startup repair, the first 3 times it said it couldnt repair. It only showed 2 restore points available and both gave error messages saying they couldnt load. I ran a checkdsk /r again and was fixing a lot of stuff and hung at same spot again. Tried another startup repair, this time it said it worked but still the same problem, windows isnt loading. However, I am able to get to the login screen now after waiting about 10 minutes at the windows logo however my kieyboard/mouse functionaility seems to be gone so i cant even type my password to login at that point. I ran a diagnostic in the boot menu, when checking the harddrive it gave me an error. Ive tried booting to every opti... Read more

All of a sudden, I turn on my lap top (lenovo idea pad flex 10) and it takes forever to Load, then says windows 8 wont boot or something.
Takes me to a blue screen and I tries to system restore but that also won't load and go through. Help please?
I went to advanced options and pulled up the box you type **** in butI don't know what to put km it to make windows boot!

A:windows 8 wont boot and system restore wont work

You need to be much more specific about what your problem is. I can't tell at all from your post what's really happening, and neither will anybody else. What exactly happens? What exact messages do you get? What "advanced options" are you talking about? Also, it appears this site's profanity filter has blocked something in your post. Using such language is not helpful.

Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8.
It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.

Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.

The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.

Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.

Any ideas?

A:Windows wont start after 8.1 update wont boot in safe mode

What does the BSOD state? Most times it is a driver issue with the Display drivers. Other times it is hardware.

When i click on system restore i get this message

A:System Restore wont start

This error may be caused by faulty imaging by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that
results in the presence of an invalid volume. To see if this is the problem, go to System in
Control Panel and open System Protection. There will be two volumes shown, one of which is
selected and named “Missing.” Select C:\ and de-select “Missing” solves the problem.

So I turn my computer off one day only to find it wont start the next day. I open the case up and see the led is on. I flip the switch on the power supply off then on and quickly press the power button. My computer starts but the following time I shut down the computer it again wont start and now the led is blinking. I've never had any issues like this before, any help would be appreciated.

I don't routinely use many usb devices, only my mouse and keyboard and every now and then my ipod. I figure the issue is likely either the power supply or the motherboard. The ps is almost two years old while the motherboard is only about three months old.

A:Computer wont start, power supply wont start, blinking led

It sounds to me like your PSU is the problem, get a hold of another and plug it to your computer and see if that will make it start, if it doesn't it might be BOTH your motherboard and PSU. A bad PSU will burn a motherboard.

Hello~
During a full system restore of my computer i didn't realize it was not charging and left it to finish the restore. Shortly coming back later, it had died so i rebooted it. During the reboot, it did its normal process well restoring, " Setup is starting services.", but then during the process when gathering windows data to restore the computer in its final stages, it gives me the message, " Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer."
Shortly after starting my computer, going through the same process, it gives me that message again, and then it repeats, and eventually of course, goes into a circle of completing the same issue. Though im pretty tech savvy this is beyond my technical point. I would appreciate any help *I have searched the internet for answers, used yahoo answers, technical support (online), and all those couldn't help* Thanks!

First things first, I would get a Sata/USB drive adapter and try to get your files off that computer's drive. You can also use Ubuntu as a boot disc and get them as well. Might be easier.

Looks like honestly you are looking at reinstalling Windows from scratch matey.

Hello,

Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

Thanks,
adub2b23

I got a new p4 3 gig with hyperthreading pc. For a while it was working like a charm, on overdrive. But only after a week of use, I started to have problems. While playing very visually demanding games (Battlefield 1942, Medal Of Honor) I would keep gettin those dreaded blue screen of death thingies. I would get one of 3 errors. One said, "IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_TO_OR_LESS_THAN" another said, "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" although im not quite sure about the NONPAGED part, i know it said non something. And the other one I think I only got once and cant remember exactly what it was, it had something to do with IRQ.

Now on all of them it said it was shutting down my pc to avoid hardware damage. Which it did, I had about 3 seconds to read the screen before my pc shut down. After a while, It got so bad that I would get an error while just browsing the internet with explorer. I tried taking out my vid card and using the on-board video, didnt work. I dont remember if xp stopped starting or not, but I decided I should format my hd to fix the problem. I only have the xp upgrade cd so I had to install win98 first. Win 98 installed fine, except that on the first startup after installation my pc resarted itself and I got the "failed startup, choose an option" thing, I chose normal start up and it worked fine. So then I tried to install xp again. I got to the part where it restarts to install xp from the files copied from cd. During that installtion phase, It said... Read more

How do I re-install windows vista? Have OS disc, windows will not load at all, under F8 safe mode dont work...system restore wont open nothing does.disc wont start up...when i reboot without pushing any buttons, screen comes up says WINDOWS ERROR RECOVERY and i have the option of LAUNCH STARTUP REPAIR or START WINDOWS NORMALLY...startup repair just restarts my computer and if i start windows normally, it shows the MICROSOFT CORPORATION logo with the line that goes across back and forth right before windows opens..after about 8 seconds then it goes to a blank screen...after about 3-4 minutes, it goes to a blue screen that says STOP: c000021a {fatal system error} The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000221 0x00100348). The system has been shut down.

So, to sum it all up, I turn on my laptop, screen that says GATEWAY and has option for F2 and F10...if I dont do anything...it goes to a black screen with curser blinking in top left corner...after about 2 minutes, it goes to Windows Error Recovery where I have the option of launching startup repair or start windows normally... If I launch startup repair, all it does is restart the computer... If I start Win Normally it goes to the Microsoft Corp logo with the line that goes across...then after a few minutes, the BSOD appears...
F8-any option I chose does absolutly nothing...

A:Vista wont start up BSOD Unable to do anything..want to do full system restore.

Ok,

Lets start at the beginning.
Do you want to recover your system.Install the operating system from Disk & start from again. Both options maybe achievable No. 1 can take a little longer but there is no guarantee of success.
No. 2 can be done quite quickly but you loose everything (If not backed up first) & start from scratch. That is provided you have all the disks & drivers too etc.

So what is your choice?
Waht do you have access to?

i already changed a video card and stil it wont.
it have no beep at all and it will not display.

what should i do?

A:guys my computer wont start and wont have a display

does it beep any. if not this will indicate more major problems. (unless you dont have beep speaker installed) a mother board is programed with a set of beep to play if there is a problem like such as three beeps if the ram is not working, 1 long beep if the vid card is not working etc etc. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR BEEPs WILL BE. if you are not getting these then you need to find out why. see if you have a speaker inside your case. if you do and all of your fans spin but still no action from you pc then you may have a larger problem such as mother board or processor.

My Dell Inspiron Laptop which runs on Windows Vista will not start properly, the screen will go black after loading, this is before i can get to the log on stage. There is only a cursor which i can move.

I then started Startup Repair and it performed the checks, but my computer still wouldn't start. I then tried System Restore which didn't have a backup. I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. Yesturday my vista was working great, and on the screen as i went to shut it down said "updating files do not shut down computer 3/3 100%" but it stayed like that for 4 hours, so i turn it off manualy once i turned it back on the next day it asked me for my password i put it in and as it was loading it was vey slow and would take 5-6 minutes for programs to load up.

Also when i go to click on like my internet it dont work, not even my games work, they try to load then freeze. So i did a scan on it and its still having this problem. After i got frustrated i went to shut it down again and it says "logging off" but stays like that for hours, so i have to manualy turn it off. I am experiencing the following very strange intermittent problems and evil behavior in XP.

My Start Menu sometimes only appears for a split second when clicked and will not stay displayed. Also minimised apps. wont maximise and apps. and short cuts on the desktop wont launch when double left clicked and instead show properties as if they were right clicked!!

I have done the following to try and resolve these issues.

1. Updated from SP1 to SP 2 as well as all the security updates.

2. Ran Adaware and Spybot to find any unwelcome visitors. Adaware only found one minor issue.

3. Ran Symantec Antivirus which found and quarantined several viruses.

4. Ran WinDoctor which found and said it resolved quite a few issues.

This is really a pain as it makes the system virtually unusable except for when it is behaving which is rare.

Would be grateful for any suggestions, solutions, incantations or workarounds for this issue/s

Kind regards

did you try entering the product key on the sticker on the back of the computer? since it is windows 8, it may not have a key. i know hp has the key embedded into themotherboard, so if it needs activated, it has to have a tattoo utility ran on it. you may try typing activate from the metro screen and try activating by phone. i have done this on windows 7 machines, but not 8. if that doesn't work, you may try calling dell, but if they want you to pay for it, post back here first, either myself or someone else may be able to help.

After only just having one problem solved on here I have encountered another and I think it is fairly problematic but am far from understanding it - please help!!!

I downloaded the new version of Internet Explorer (version 8) as this was an option when I signed onto the web this afternoon (I previously had IE 7 and am running Windows XP version 2).

But after downloading this I had trouble getting onto the net (though I seemed to be able to initially). So I restarted the PC. But, it did not restart.

Instead I get the following message on a plain black screen when I try to run my computer:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

What is this file? I have an Acer Aspire notebook which came installed with Windows XP Version 2 (I have no CD drive currently).

I have looked on the microsoft website (I am currently on a different PC) but dont understand anything that is posted on their about this problem.

Do I need to re-install a new operating system? Will this mean I will loose all my data that is on my computer? This is very precious to me as I am travelling and I have saved on my computer photos and diary entries - I would be very upset to loose them.

What is my best course of action? Should I take it to a specialist. Again I really hope I can prevent the information that I did have saved on there from being deleted.

Thankyou to anyone who can assist.

So a couple days ago I began to have a problem with my computer in which a majority of my applications would not and still will not open. Only a few will open some of them being the task manager, command prompt, internet browser, and notepad. Other then that really nothing works, I click on the icon and nothing pops up. I've tried accessing system restore through many different ways including booting into safe mode and via the command prompt yet whenever the window pops up it goes white and starts to not respond. I can't access my computer either. I thought this might be a virus but I've run Norton AntiVirus twice and both times came back with nothing. I tried downloading a program from norton used to detect more serious virus' as well as something for rootkits but whenever I try to run them the same thing happens with every other application, which is that they don't open up. Short of reinstalling my OS (don't have the disc on me), does anyone have any possible solutions for this problem? Thanks in advance for your time :/.

A friend of mine is asking for help and I am powerless since I do not have windows vista so I thought about you guys! There is the problem:

with Windows Vista , in Windows Mail, if you've sent too large a file, you've got trouble. the mail server is not microsoft (Hotmail or MSN)
It won't send, but keeps trying to send, it won't delete in any conventional and non conventional method and although there is an update to handle this issue, it isn't applicable to our Vista machine, as it's about eighteen months old, therefore a dinosaur in the world of technology.

She does'nt want to download or create another email server that would require changing her email address. She downloaded Incredible because she CAN retain her email address, and will use it until she find a way to get that sent file that won't go deleted from Windows Mail.. Can you help? Thanks

Ok, it all started when i was dloading a program to make windows setups.(.msi). Then i decided i didnt like it and uninstalled it. After tht was done. I decided i was going to stick with Inno Setup. I have used it before and liked it. But then i noticed all or most of my desktop icons were missing. And all the start menu ientries were missing. So i figured i had a virus. SO i went to do a system resotre. But found that i oculdnt find it...due to to missing folders. So i decided i would then try to boot into safe mode. When i tried to boot it said it cannot find a file(same with normal mode). Ubfortunely i dont remember what it said. I think it said windows cannot find NRDL press ctrl alt delete to reboot. or somthing like that. Any ways i tried a few more times and it all failied. SO then i tried the windows recovery console. Nothing. I really didnt know whre to go with it. Then i decied to go into the bios and reset. Or i thought i was resseting them. I seleteced. "fails proof settings". But then i rebooted and things got worse. My monitor is now getting no signal, it says it is ocnnected though..... So i cant see what i am doing. Please any ideas. I have a Programming project that i have been working on for months now. i dont wanna lose that. And a Lang arts project. Might be a failing Hard drive. Get to your bios and see if there is any diagnostics there to do a hard drive test. On some motherboards its delete on others its F2. If there is no diagnostics on the bios i would make a USB bootable diagnostics and do that.
I just had the same problems and found out the hard way that it was a hard drive.

Hi,
I have been having this problem for quite some time now. I cant download any updates and it says that i'm using a proxy or behind a firewall.

The error code is 8024402C

I have gone through all the steps mentioned in the Microsoft site and also in numerous other sites to identify the cause of the problem and nothing seems to work.

Also my Limewire, Bit comet and other p2p s/w's have stopped connecting for some reason. I'm not sure if all these problems are related to each other.

Can anyone tell me what to do?

i think the original cd may have been misplaced or lost.

is there anychance of recovering my pc without having to reinstall windows competly?

A:Windows Just Wont Start

Yes, it is possible however before following the procedure below, I would test your hard drive. Note it is very often a failing hd that causes errors like this one.

In addition is this machine overclocked at all?

Here is the MSKB article that explains how to fix this problem without a reinstall. Note if there is anything important on the drive, I would pull the drive and connect it to the system you are using now. Copy whatever you need and then reinstall the drive and preform the fix.

I have to say the followings :
1) I tryed safe mode but it doesn`t works
2) I dont have a system restore point so there wont be system restore
3) I tryed last known good configuration .
4) I donno what to do anymore .

Why doesn`t exist such a thing like in Windows XP when you inserted your windows cd inside it booted and you could perform a REPAIR , and hell yea that was a repair cose it repair literally everything , not this crap that windows 7 has ( Startup repair , System restore , System image recovery , WIndows memmory diagnostic , Command prompt ) i mean what happened to the good old repair like in windows XP ...

Hello everyone new here but my windows 7 wont boot up.

Basically yesterday i brought a internet usb dongle and when trying to intall it, the progress bar wasnt moving so i tried to cancel it but that werent working and it seemed to of froze my laptop completely, tried pressing ctrl alt del but nothing again, after about 5 minutes of this i manually turned my laptop off by holding down the power button.

Now the problem is windows will not boot up now, when doing a normal start up it gets stuck on the first loading screen, safe mode does the loading files bit but after that it just gets stuck on a black screen, i have tried disabling the driver option but no luck, the only one that gets anywhere is the debugger option and this moves through the 3-4 loading screens, which for some reason take about 10 minutes a screen! and then gets stuck on a black screen aswell.

I have tried the start up repair but that cant fix it aswell and i dont think it says what the problem is either, and i started a chkdsk through the command prompt about 6 hours ago and it is still running, currently verifying files (stage 1 of 3) roughly moving up 1 file every 30 seconds or so which cant be right!!

I havent got a windows 7 disc or any sort of boot disk and have no system restore points so im a bit stuck on what to do now!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers, Gary.

When I try to boot my computer it goes to the first screen with just some text. Windows will not start at all. No error messages - just hangs there.
I have to turn the power off & on up to 10 or 12 times, and windows will then start. Also once it is running the system crashes and restarts and some of my graphic design programes freeze up
Professional repair guy said the computer was not recognising the hard drive, must be faulty, and so replaced it with new one.
It is still doing the same thing.
He now says he needs to reload windows.
I dont want to start from scratch. I have tried system restore - did not fix prob.
Is there other diagnostics or fixes I can try before the dramatic and time consuming windows re-install ??

OK. Huge problems here. I just put together a rig:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Chaintech 7VNF4 nForce4 Socket 939
XFX GeForce 6600 PCIE 256MB DDR3 w/ DVI & TV Out
Seagate 120GB EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-100
Kingston 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz
Samsung 12X Writemaster Int Black DVD+/-RW

I got the thing up and running, andIi installed my copy of Windows XP Home Edition. I have reformatted and reinstalled countless times because this keeps happening: I finish the installation and when it reboots for the first time, I get a blue screen of death. Over and over it reboots and windows never launches. I've gone into safe mode and installed all the drivers i could possibly need, but as soon as i load up windows normally, it crashes over and over again.

Also, I have loaded a version of Windows 2000 pro just to see if it would work, and the graphics were a complete mess, could hardly make out certain things. It ran extremely slow too, as in: it took 5 minutes to open the My Computer window.

Any insight someone can offer me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Beepsters. I seem to be dropping in a lot...just not my month with computers I guess. My problem is with my Windows XP Media center edition. It is 2 gig ram with a 200 gig H/D. The other day I turned it on, and by the time it reached the choose selection screen which it always goes to first ( Start Windows XP media edition, enter recovery console..) I realized I didn't plug in my wireless keyboard and mouse usb. I plugged it in and waited for it to accept the usb so I could make my selection. (Start windows xp media) Waited a few minutes and still nothing. So, Being impatient, I did a "hard shut down." I plugged in my servicing key board and mouse and re-started. Now it will not get past the HP boot screen. I have no keyboard function or mouse function. Just stuck on the HP screen. Any Ideas? Tried with different keyboards and mouse combinations. I don't see the hard drive light blinking at all. This computer has never given me a problem before and is one of my favorites. I am leaning towards a ram problem but I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Windows XP wont start

My first mode of attack would be to unplug the power to the tower and pull the CMOS battery. There is a chance that its a BIOS issue. Try that first and let us know how it works out. Keep in mind that after pulling the battery you will need to enter the BIOS setup and reset the date and time.

Do you have the boot disks (you were supposed to make when you first got the computer)? If not, you can download them here. Be sure to get the correct version for the way your computer originally had XP installed, not what you may have updated it to. In other words, if it came with XP and you updated to SP1 get the one for Windows XP without any service pacs. If it came with SP1 get the ones for XP with SP1.http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994

WinXP with SP 3
On booting I could get to the windows start up window then the computer would just reboot. It wont start in SAFE MODE. Then all of a sudden it starts saying it cant detect the HD, but I can still get to SAFE MODE (F8).

When it was starting (Windows start up window) it would flick to a blue screen but far too quick to read.

Its my cousins computer and his girls use it to download anything and everything (a lot of music I think). I was aware of it having a trojan and had asked them to keep off it until I could remove it, but young girls dont always take notice. I had previously installed a firewall, but they turned that off because it was stopping them doing some thing.

I would just do a fresh install but I cant get to the CD-ROM either. I have tried setting the CD-ROM as 1st boot device but its just not detecting it. The only thing it will detect at this stage is the floppy, but my XP rescue disk is not helping either.

I really feel like telling my cousin "tuff" if his girls want to download music, but they are really good kids.

Any help appreciated

Hello, I am having trouble with one of my computers. When i start it a page appears for a split second, that says something about a Phoenix award bios at the top of the page. At the bottom of the page it says press delete key for setup or alt+f2 for AWDFLASH. After that split second it proceeds to a black screen to where it says i can do the following:

Boot with safe mode
Boot with safe mode with networking
Boot with safe mode with command prompt
Last Known Configuration
Start Windows normally (It has Windows XP on it)

Now none of these seems to work, i have gone through every one of these options and once i click enter to start it, it goes to the windows loading page but then the computer proceeds to restart all on its own. I was wondering if anybody could help me out with this problem. I think that a virus has got into reboot part of the computer that is preventing it from starting but i don't know i havent used that computer in months. I have no idea what happened to the computer, my brother tried to turn it on one day and he said that it wont start up. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

A:Windows 7 wont start

In order to troubleshoot the issue better, please provide more information.
Are you gettinng any error message at the time of booting the computer in Safe Mode?
Are you able to boot to the desktop in normal mode?
I would suggest you to perform Startup Repair and check if the issue is resolved.
Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly.
Startup Repair is one of the recovery tools in the System Recovery Options menu. This set of tools is located on your computer's hard disk and on the Windows installation disc.
1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer using the computer's power button.

I cam home from school today and switched on my computer. A screen shows up saying something along the lines of "We're sorry for the inconvenience, but windows was unable to start for some reason etc etc." And I have basically 3 options:

1. Safe mode
2. Try last known configuration
3. Start windows normally

If I choose any of these, the computer restarts without getting anywhere (i.e. after a couple of seconds). And I come back to the same screen again.

The computer is a Packard Bell machine with 2.93GHz Pentium 4 processor, 512mb ram, and its running Windows XP SP2.

Does anyone know if they might be able to help? I do although have a suspicion that it might be because i just the other day opened up the case and started hoovering inside to get rid of dust etc. and I also used a duster as well, so something might have come loose or blocked or something? I do smell a slight electrical/burning smell coming from the inside, but that might just be my paranoia..

Just to note, it was running fine last night and this morning when I switched it off before going to school.

Sorry for the long post.. If anyone can help though I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Hi all,
I am desperately in need of some pro assistance.

My pc had shut down overnight and when i tried to turn it on today i get this issue.

You turn power on and then you see how Windows wants to start, but it won't actually. Only shows different options ( last good configuration, start normally etc).
I've tried all 5 available options, but it just starts again and comes back to this page over and over again and also computer makes a small click noise when attempting to restart or something.

when booting in safe mode it gets as far as
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\aswRvrt.sys

Then it reboots back to the options menu.

I hope this makes some sense and if anyone out there can help me I would really appreciate it.
Thank you for your time.

Hi

To view the BSOD code, on the advanced startup menu (The one with safe mode on it) select disable automatic restart on system failure and then try to boot normally.

Then write down the error code and any drivers it mentions and post them back here.

over the past 2 weeks my pc has crashed about 4 or 5 times. i get a message saying it has been shut down to stop any damage. when i restart it comes up with a screen saying it is doing a start up repair. after about 20 min it says it can not repair and to do a system restore. this also does not cure the problem. i have to start in safe mode and select last known good configuration. this gets me going again. i use the pc nearly every day. i do not think i have added any new programs or software, but about 5 or 6 weeks ago i did add some extra ram. 4GB. i used identical sticks to the original, but my original voltage shows as1.65v and the new ones 1.50v. i dont know if this is related to my problem or if it is something that needs sorting.

many thanks

Hi guys!
Can anyone help me please? Im not very good with computers so ill try and describe this the best way I can.
I've recently moved house and my PC has been in storage since Feb 09 until now.I set it up and it worked fine.As im waiting for my Internet Provider to switch me on,I thought I would install O2 mobile Internet. It installed fine but when the O2 internet launched IE my PC froze.I rebooted it and it did the same thing so I uninstalled the O2 Internet. It restarted but now it wont go any further than the WIN XP logo with the progress bar underneath it. When I try to restart it, it says that windows has malfunctioned and wants me to start in safe mode.Ive asked about and was told to go to START - RUN and put msconfig in and click on start up,so I did this and theres nothing there only bluetooth, avg and 2 other things, which I presumed was windows,so I left them and just unticked the bluetooth and avg.I tried restarting it again but its still freezing in the same place,at the WIN XP logo.
Its driving me mad, has anybody got any ideas please.
Thank you!

Forgot to say ive tried system restore but that hasnt worked!

Welcome to TSG....

It sounds like you are stuck on the last known configuration screen so please try this

If you have a Full Operating System on CD then you can try this:

1. Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer.
2. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
3. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
4. When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.
5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you have to use from the Recovery Console.
6. When you are prompted, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER (if none was set, leave it blank and press ENTER).
7. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /list, and then press ENTER. The entries in your current Boot.ini file appear on the screen.
8. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER. This command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT installations, and then displays the results. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to add the Windows installations to the Boot.ini file. For example, follow these steps to add a Windows XP installation to the Boot.ini fil... I installed Norton Antivirus to stop this sort of problem. But when I restarted the computer after installing the program windows will not start. Instead a message pops up stating "userinit.exe -- Application Error. This application failed to initialize. Hit OK to terminate the program." And once I hit the OK buttton the desktop picture just stays there. No Icons, No start bar, nothing starts up. Although I can still hear the start up sound when the computer starts, and if I leave it long enough my screen saver pops up. So its as if the computer is starting, just until the last step as to where Windows XP Prof. actually starts where I can use the computer. Ive tried the whole safe mode thing, and the start on last good configuration and neither have worked. Please help me fix my computer!! Any help will do!!!

Hey guys,
Im hoping you can help.

I have a custom computer i just built. Specs Follow
Motherbored: P6N Diamond
Processor: QUAD CORE 2.6
Video: Geforce 8800 GTS
2 gigs Ram
500 Hard drive

Ok here's the problem. I have installed windows, and it's ok.
After installing windows i install the drivers. After installing the drivers,
the window screen just sits at the loading screen. (obviously a driver problem?)

So, i have to do trial and error, which i have. And i think i narrowed it down to the onbored sound driver. ( creative SOUND blaster X-FI Xtreme On board Audio)
So i thought. Now it just doesnt work when i install random other drivers.

So i took it to a TECH guy who charged me 200 bucks for nothing. he got it to start...for a couple houres, and when i was able to s hut and down and reboot it, it would sit at the loading screen for about 2 minutes and THEN start up...
But it was not performed like it should have. It was performing like a pentium 4 with 1 gig of ram and nothing special in it. So i shut it down that night, and what do you know..? the next morning it stopped working again.

(i have tried VISTA and XP)

If anyony has a solution for this PLEASE let me know =\.
Thanks alot guys.

Regards

A:Windows wont start!

Also i can install all my drivers and it will work fine,
The problem comes to hand when i install the Motherbored drivers.

When I try to boot up my PC, I get this message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe."

Running XP professional. I was having problems with my mouse, then the computer rebooted and came up with this error and now i cant get into windows or windows safe mode in any form.

I have an XP install disk but it freezes when i boot from disk.

Is it possible to put the Hard disk drive into another PC and copy a good copy of the corrupted file accross? Is there a way i could receive this file from anyone?

Thank you for any help.

A:Windows XP wont start

I had a similar problem. First, using my original Windows XP cd I booted off of it (you may need to go into your BIOS and configure the CD ROM as a boot device) and have it try to repair your existing installation - skip the "R" repair console for now and pick Setup Windows and it will give you an option to repair an existing installation. That didn't work for me so then their is a knowlege base article (307545) (the process is fairly simple if your familiar at all with DOS) that tells you how to boot into the Repair console and copy the old registry files to a tmp directory and replace them with those created when you installed the system the first time - this allowed me to boot and get to a point where I could get valuable data. You want Microsoft Knowledge Base article 307545.

The other day i was trying to burn a cd and my computer froze. I turned it off and turned it back on and it gave me the options of starting in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known good configuration, and to start normally. I chose start normally and it went all the way to the windows loading screen, then goes right back to screen asking me how I want to start windows. It does this on a continual basis. I left the comp on for about a hour and it just kept cycling through those stages without starting windows. What is the problem?? I don't want to loose everything on my comp. Please Help.

When I start Windows 7 (Ultimate x64) it'll hang at boot telling me that it can't verify the signature for kdcom.dll, when I chose to Disable this check Windows will get a BSoD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with Stop: 0x0000000A, now I managed to fix this with my USB stick (essentially the Win 7 DVD but a USB stick is handier for me), by executing bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot, after a restart everything is fine again, but after a while Windows will shut down without notice, and with the same problem when I restart (can't verify driver signature)

Also when I put the PC in Sleep mode it'll shut the PC down the moment the screen goes blank (no blinking LED), with the boot problem described above on the next startup

And when the HD is plugged in to my SATA III JMicron controller instead of the normal SATAII ports it'll hang before Windows boots with a blinking _ istead of the error message

Further notes: Save mode doesn't work either and the Status code is 0xc0000428

Normally I can fix my PC problems myself and even help friends with theirs, but now I'm really unable to fully fix it.

A:Windows wont start

Dunno how this slipped through the cracks. Sorry about that lad.

Status code on safe mode states that it's an invalid image hash for a driver. It's not so much that the driver is unsigned, or that it failed a signature check (might be), but I believe it has to do with the driver files themselves actually being corrupted. The crashing on normal mode from disabling signature check leads me to believe this.

That's all I can mention as there's no further data to go on. No crashdumps, no event logs, nothing. If you can somehow provide any of that, it'd be terrific. Otherwise, just go on the assumption that your drivers. I don't know why, but it's eyeballing the kdcom driver, which is for live debugging over a serial connection. Typically reason why it bugs out so early is that such drivers load early so that if there's a crash someone can debug it on the fly. It should be signed and whatnot.

Have you considered repairing the 'unsigned' drivers by using the Win7 installation disk and extract the necessary drivers to your Windows partition?

You are going to have to get some media to boot the computer. If you dont have a restore dvd, or win 7 dvd it would be a good idea to get one.

Have you tried booting into safe mode (F8)?
Where does it hang or freeze, are there any error codes, etc.

My pc wont start. It runs on Windows ME after the usual start-up sequence goes to report that C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD are missing or corrupted. It then prompts me to type the name of the Windowns loader, and remains at the C prompt.
The pc came with ME preloaded and no disk.
I do have a boot disk for A drive but using that has no effect whatsoever. I followed instructions to recreate another boot disk and copied over the IFSHLP.SYS file to it (following advice to someone else on the forum who had similar problem with that file) but that has no effect either.
Any ideas?
Thanks
