WiFi turned off after update, and won't turn on again

Q: WiFi turned off after update, and won't turn on again

My wife has a toshiba Satellite L645D-S4040 running Windows 7 64 bit. This morning she ran an update and has since lost wifi and Fn F8 does not work. Went to Toshiba site and downloaded and ran the TVAP. It got rid of the Microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter and we still can't get the wifi to enable. Unfortunately she does not remember which update it was that she performed. Help.

Update: My wife remembered that the only change she made was to install Secunia PSI from this sites download section.

A: WiFi turned off after update, and won't turn on again

Does FN+F8 key work after installing TVAP?

Did you try a system restore?

I've already consulted Samsung about this issue, and they want me to Refresh (windows 8) my laptop. I have important programs and I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT.

Started about half an hour ago, I plugged my laptop into the wired connection because it was downloading 6 GB. Plugging in a cord activates Airplane mode. In theory, once out of Airplane Mode, WiFi will turn back on. NORMALLY IT DOES, BUT NOW IT DOESN'T. THIS IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF.

PLEASE HELP ME. IT'S A BRAND NEW LAPTOP, NOT TO MENTION MY SECOND ONE OF IT.

A:WiFi turned off and won't turn back on.

Is this a second computer with the same issue?

I would suggest contacting Microsoft as it seems to be a software issue and not hardware. Especially if you can turn on the wireless manually.

Hey, I have a HP Pavillion DM1-4020sa product number A2D08EA#ABU, which I upgraded to Wndows 8 the day it came out with no problems at all, dwnloaded all the available drivers including the HP Support Software that auto updates drivers and its been fine since. Until I turned the Wifi off only to find that it won't turn back on again, I turned it off via the button on the keyboard as you normally would then continued doing what I was doing, went back on later, pressed the button again to turn back on, it turned from red to green as it ormally would, ut Windows 8 won't actully fgure out that it's on, I've rebooted checked for new updates, disabled and reenabled the drver, uninstalled the driver and then reinstalled from the HP site, but still not change. Any help? Thanks, NG

A:Windows 8 Wifi Wont Turn Back On Once Turned Off

I wouldn't know why it's acting like it is, but you might want to try restoring the system back to a date when the wifi worked. I'm guessing that would enable the wifi again...Take a careful look at this document before you try it, OK? http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03327545 Hope this helps,

I recently updated my Inspiron 14" 5459 to the Windows 10 anniversary update, i noticed that when my wifi access point changes or wifi signal drops or turning off wifi, my laptop semi-freezes, you could still scroll with the mouse or track pad and select open tabs but that's all, clicking other icons and even the windows start menu does not work, if you wait for more than 5 minutes, everything goes back to normal. Waiting around for about 5 minutes is annoying so what I do is press ctrl alt delete and from there restart the laptop. my wifi adapter is updated to the most recent version and also both graphics card (intel hd 520 and amd radeon m335) is also updated to the latest version.  Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?

A:after Windows 10 anniversary update, Inspiron 5459 freezes if wifi is turned off or wifi access point is changed, is there a solution to this problem?

Please confirm the wireless card from the device manger or the network control panel. Also please update the BIOS firmware to the latest version. The BIOS update should ideally be version v1.2.2. Also please try system out with  a LAN cable as well to confirm if is indeed caused by the wireless. Though this may not run a complete diagnostics on the network you can run a hardware diagnostics on the computer using the following steps

Shutdown the computer
Hold the 'Fn' key and turn on the computer
Let go of the 'Fn' key after 2 seconds

This is will initiate the H/w diagnostics. Please let us know if it completes or if  you run into any errors. If  you do run into any errors.

Hello,
I recently received a windows update to install sp1
During the update my power cable came out and the laptop turned off. I now can't turn the laptop on. I've tried start up repair which hasn't worked and also tried restoring to a previous point but it just keeps trying to finalise but not getting anywhere. I've also tried to restore to factory settings but it keeps saying error. I have no back up disk and as my laptop is 3 years old and a basic free laptop from university I don't wabt to pay too much to get it fixed. I havr windows vista home.
Is there anything I can do?

Hi all,

Somehow in the past two days, my computer developed a Smitfraud infection (and possibly others). I am running Windows XP SP2 and normally run Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security suite.

Now, when the malware had been running, I got all kinds of pop-up windows, PC-cillin couldn't seem to do anything, Windows Update and the Task Manager were both turned off, etc.

I rebooted in Safe Mode with Networking, and was able to download SpyBot S&D, and remove a number of different problems, including Smitfraud and Virtumonde, both of which had several infected files, I think. I immunized against these problems, rebooted.

However, the problem didn't seem to be completely fixed, so I went back into Safe Mode, downloaded SmitFraudFix, and ran that, which found more infected files, including hosts. It was supposedly "clean" at this point.

I re-booted normally, and the computer was quite a bit slower. I thought SpyBot might be the problem, so I uninstalled it, since I still have Trend Micro PC-cillin on my system. When I did this, I immediately received a message from PC-cillin that Windows Update had been turned off again.

When I try to turn on Windows Update through the Security Center, it says Windows Update is off, but then won't let me turn it back on except through the Control Panel. When I go to the Control Panel, it says that Windows Update is ON. I have no idea how to fix this. I get periodic notices from PC-cillin that it is off, a... Read more

'Hello, this is my first post here, so I am sorry if anything is confusing.

The reason why I signed up in this forum is s I can seek help fron those that might know more about computer than me, in order to solve my problem

A few days ago, my laptop was working perfectly fine. But then, I turned my computer off, the next day, everything started up as normal, with Windows 7 Home Premium still in the backgrounds when I am logging in but then, the network connecter won't automatically start. So I was left without internet for a bit. Whats more, I noticed that the taskbar, which was always semi-transparent before, is now white. As well as all the title bars of the programs that I open, turned into blue!

Is computer has always ran Windows 7 as far as I am aware, but e way the taskbar, and the title bars, are behaving, reminds me of windows xp.

I first tried to look up how to solve my wifi problem. I manually opened the network connecter in the control panel, and tried to "Connect to a network". But it didn't detect any wifi servers! Which is odd since I had always used the one my family used, and I am using wifi on that server at this moment!

When I tried to use troubleshoot on my "internet connections", it first showed me that the issue was "The Diagnostic Policy Service is not running" but then every other time I tried to troubleshoot again, it doesn't show any problems detected

And with the problem of the taskbar, I tried to search solution... Read more

I recently got an update from Microsoft on Win 7, and immediately after it had finished updating I had no sound in any application (AIM, Skype, Chrome, Firefox, Youtube, etc.). This has happened before, and I ran Microsoft's Sound problems wizard and it always said that an option had been clicked off and that it had restored it. This time when I ran the wizard it says it detects no problems. I am sure it is the software, as it happens a lot with MS updates. Will downloading a new driver help? I can't go back to a previous configuration, I don't have one to go to. What should I Do? A computer without sound is like a bicycle without wheels.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

I was on a real estate web site when the no-security balloons came up. I can't turn them on. The services list in msconfig shows all boxes checked but I can't start them. Browser, sound. wireless zero config and others. Takes longer than usual to boot up. When I ran GMER, the scan started automatically. After about 5 min it stopped writing anything but ran for another 2 hrs or more then turned off and disappeared. I redid it and just saved after it had written what was apparently everything. So I hope this is what you need.No problems noted lately. Nothing new except downloading Skype a couple days ago. Will have to try to upload GMER log in another email. Maybe the browser in this old computer is not up to date.Rest of files.Merged posts. ~ OB

Hi,
I've just recently had this happen, but I've been here enough to know I may have contracted a nasty.

Last week my system started hanging up and plain not responding. My wireless aircard refused to work in a manner like it was telling me that it was already in use, when it wasn't even plugged in! I couldn't get much to work right so I rebooted in safe mode, ran a couple of scans, which found nothing, rebooted in normal mode and my aircard was working again. Yay.
It worked normal except for the Windows pop up box that says you are offline kept popping up, and I couldn't close it unless I connected to the net via my aircard. Now my AVG has been switched off and I can't get it to turn back on, and my surfing via aircard is noticably slower. And, my power icon in the tray has gone away.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P-105, 32 bit processor, Vista Home Premium, SP 1.
I also have A Squared, AdAware, AVG (free edition), Malware Bytes, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware installed.

I use this laptop for work and now I'm afraid to put in passwords, account numbers, etc.

Thanks,
Steve

A:My AVG has been turned off and I can't turn it back on!

Just an update.
I downloaded + ran the Kaspersky scanner and it found nothing, but yet I've lost the power icon and the internet connection icons in the task tray.
It still get a black screen for a long time on start up from sleep mode.

I'm not sure if I'm infected, or have something going wrong.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

I'm working with my brother's laptop. He has Vista Home Basic as his O/S. He had AVG 2010 - free version. Somehow Cyber Defender was also installed. He noticed parts of AVG were turned off, figured he needed the new version, tried to install AVG Free 2011 then getting all sorts of "bad image" errors. He has tried running different anti-virus and anti-spyware packages and scans. He also couldn't get Cyber Defender to uninstall, even uninstalling from Safe Mode. He called Cyber Defender and they had him do the same thing he'd done 50 times and this time it said it uninstalled.

I created a bootable USB flash drive, cold-booted from that and ran an AVG scan, which reported tracking cookies and a few minor issues but didn't find a major problem. I've gotten the laptop to the point where AVG 2010 is uninstalled and 2011 is installed and he's no longer getting the "bad image" errors, but AVG features are turned off and report errors when trying to turn them on, and ComboFix reports Cyber Defender is still active. To my mind these are classic virus symptoms, but I can't identify the virus and removing whatever he's got is beyond my skill set. I need some help with this. Thanks very much in advance.

My laptop turned on this morning, and now it won't turn off, but the fan and the green light to say it's on are working and green. Nothing will turn the computer on or off.

Once it runs out of battery and I plug it in, it should work fine, But that's going to be in like another 2 hours (it was at 100% battery last night). It might be because I didn't hold the power button long enough, but I doubt it. Any ideas on what might have happened?

Hey I have a really weird problem and as far as I know its pretty unique since I have been surfing the internet for ages without result.

Here goes:

I bought a alienware about a year ago. Over the year (sometime can't remember when) it developed this problem of not turning on after it was turned off. If it was left for a couple of hours it would. But THEN it developed this new thing were I would have to take the kettle plug out (whatever its called) and then leave it for a few hours and it would reboot then. We sent the computer back under warranty and they appartently put in a new power supply and motherboard. Fair play.

Anyway got the computer back and it was fine. For about a week. Then it came back and VERY quickly grew worse and worse. Now if I take the kettle plug out and leave it, it takes about five days to turn on again.

What the FUDGE is going on? (Lol sorry for the language )

P.S This computer is pretty powerful like, handles any new game on top graphics without a problem and always loads in first. Dunno if that helps or not.

Several weeks ago I noticed an alert on my computer that my antivirus (at the time it was Panda Security's free AV) was turned off. I tried turning it on through Windows' tool and it didn't work. When I tried opening Panda itself, it would take approximately 5 minutes for the window to open, then nothing inside it would be clickable. I assumed the issue was with Panda and uninstalled it, then got BitDefender's Total Security 2016 free trial. That seemed to work better, but then the next day I was again getting the message from Windows that my antivirus was turned off. This time I opened BitDefender to check its status, and it said my computer was protected. I tried telling BitDefender to turn on through Windows' Action Centre, and then my status on the BitDefender window changed, and said that real time protection is turned off. I tried turning it on several times in the BitDefender window as well as through the Action Centre to no avail. I downloaded and ran FRST, and following are the contents of the FRST.txt log. Just ran into an odd problem, ever 15 seconds I have a dos window that opens for a fraction of a second, steals the system focus and then closes before I can read anything in the window.  Went to restore the system to yesterday and saw that system restore was turned off.  Went to turn it on and got the error:

Could not apply the settings for the following reasons:
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. ()x8007007B)

http://d.pr/i/tm0p

Ran a scan with MSE & Malwarebytes with no item detected with either.

A:System Restore is turned off and won't turn on

The issue started after completing the update for IE 11 and was going on for about 2 hours . . . it just suddenly stopped, and now System Restore is reported as being enabled.

Random issues that stop without intervention make me concerned.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Try another psu and see if that helps.

Check this psu wattage calculator HERE.

Make sure you get a decent psu. Antec/fortron/Enermax all make good quality psu`s.

If it doesn`t, theres a good chance you`ve got some major damage to the mobo etc.

hey all, big big problem

my pc will not turn on.... i was using it this morning for about 4 mins and then it randomly turned off. I tried using differnt power cables but the comp just doesnt want to turn on.

all i have done this morning was plugging back my external sound card that i took to my friends house last night. I have connected it to the same usb port as before and i know there is nothing wrong with it cause i was playing music before the pc just crashed.

The pc wasnt used for 3 days (until today of course) and it is only a year old.

Wat could be the problem?!

Thanks

Last night I decided to let my game idle while I went to bed. As the computer is in my room and I didn't want the screen light to keep me up I decided to turn down the brightness. So I went to the right side windows 8 menu clicked on settings and pressed brightness. Now I accidentally turned it down to zero and I let my mouse go.

So now my screen is black. This wouldn't be a problem if the brightness buttons work but they don't (didn't install the boot camp drivers)
Is there any way I can recover this? Or would I have to reinstall my pc?

PC specs: mid 2010 13inch Mac book pro, no bootcamp drivers

Hello,
My laptop  (Dell Inspiron 15 model 3531) turned off and will not turn back on. I've tried removing the battery and using the power cord, however, every time I plug the power cord in the light on it turns off. I've tried removing the battery and pressing the power button down for 30 seconds and then plugging the power cord back into it, with the battery in.....same, no beeping or anything. I don't know if it's under warranty as I got it from school and they are now closed (ITT TECH). I have an older inspiron, but this one had all of my programs from school. Thank you for your help.

Hi,

My old topic was 'Am I Infected???' where I posted all the results asked for. The white flag notification shows sometimes that my AV (Avira) is turned off. Am not sure why this is happening. And even when I click on Turn on, it takes time for the cross to go from the white flag. However, my AV application is loaded. Is this an error?

Secondly, I can't seem to save Word docs or other docs in C drive. It says its either write protected, or corrupted or full. I then have to save it in My Documents and then copy and paste into C drive.

Thirdly, I have Glasswire and WhoisonmyWifi apps and I have followed all the steps of staying safe on the net like the mac filtering etc. My computer is working pretty fast and even the internet.

Please do check if my computer is clean and whether my AV is the best one. I'm using the free software of Avira and so far other than the notification saying that it is turned off, I haven't faced any issues. Sometimes, it says that windows defender is turned off. Please review the logs posted in my previous thread too.

Hi forum,

I feel pretty stupid, but I have a problem, that I just can't figure out how to solve.

I installed the win 8 upgrade on my desktop yesterday. I have two monitors connected but only one of them was working, even though I upgraded the drivers for the graphicscard, I wasn't able to enable the other monitor. This is, however, not my problem.. As part of me trying to figure it out, I hit the "Devices" button in the menu and disabled the only monitor on there. I thought it was the one which wasn't working, but it turned out to be the one already working, so now none of the monitors are on and I have no idea of how to get them working again.

I'm guess that I'm looking for some sort of a keyboard shortcut to enable the monitor again, can anyone help?

A:Accidently turned off monitor and can't turn it on again

The Windows key and P brings up the "PC screen only - Duplicate - Extend - Second screen only" menu bar. Mine defaults to PC screen only. The up and down arrow keys cycle though the options.
Try Windows key + P and then Enter. If that doesn't work try Windows key + P, down arrow, and Enter.

Good Morning everyone,

My husband I and a Cyberpower GX1107 I7 920, which we purchased in June 2009 (not even a year ago). He was using it this morning, just using firefox visiting a website he has gone to every day, when it suddenly shut down. We let it sit for about 10 minutes, and attempted to turn it back on, but nothing would happen.

We tested the electrical outlet, and its fine. We attempted to turn it on again, and the light on the front would come on for a second, but then go off, and the computer will not come on. It's like it gets power for a second, but then refuses to acknowledge anything.

Do we need a new power supply? What else could have gone wrong? I checked the warranty information, and parts are warrantied for a year, so it should not have died this early.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! If you need any other details, I'll try to provide them.

Thank you so much in advance.

I have a user that when they try to log into Duke Progress Energy's website at https://www.progress-energy.com/app/loginregistration/login.aspx it will redirect them to a "one time authentication" page which requires them to use a one-time key
to log in on a new computer.  When going to this one-time website (secure8.i-doxs.net) it will get an error message that says...
This page can't be displayed
Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in the Advanced settings and try connecting to https://secure8.i-doxs.net again.  If this error persists, contact your site administrator.
Well, I'm the site administrator and I can confirm that TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 are all enabled and forced by GPO.  Restarting IE and rebooting did not help.  Chrome and Firefox both work flawlessly.
Edit: This is IE 11 on Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

hi all , its my first post so please be gentle with me
i've turned off the vga device in the display advanced settings and can't turn it back on when the system boots up as the screen is off . i've seen another post with the same problem but just cant seem to get any off the tips in that post to work . i was trying to install a new graphics card (zotac geforce 2600a) on an old 2nd hand dell dimensions 4600 but when i tried to install the driver ,i got an error "the nvidia setup prog could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware " so i read the instructions again which said disable the driver already installed , looked for and couldnt find in add/remove programme bit in control panel ,which is when i did what i did .
what i've tried to remedy this is hit the f8 key on start up tried safe mode, enable vga, last known good configand ,and safe mode with command prompt (not sure what the last 1 was doing but tried it anyhow)also tried taking out graphics card rebooting reinstalling it and start up again all with no joy. as it was 2nd hand i have no disc with it and was unsure to try the ctrl+f11 to set the machine back to factory setting (would this affect the memory upgrade i made) thanks for any help

Forgive me for not knowing the proper terms, but am newer to the Wifi game - have only had it since February.

Our Gateway Laptop has always recognized our Wifi signal until a week ago. Now whenever it goes to sleep or is shut off it does not recognize that we have internet. Instead of the 5 bar icon showing; it has a red x. The only way I can get it to connect is to reboot. I have done a system refresh and also tried to update the driver (Realtek RTL8188CE) but it says I have the most up-to-date version.

This is extremely frustrating! Does anyone have any ideas?

A:Wifi Capability being turned off

"Troubleshoot problems" (right click the network icon) can fix the majority of issues without needing a reboot. It will turn off the adapter and re-initialize the drivers.

On portable devices the wireless adapter can be manually turned off for most devices. It is usually a Fn key that is used to turn wireless off.
Wireless can be disabled and enabled, within the list of network connections (Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections).
I know it is frustrating and I don't have a proper solution for you. Especially when you say you have updated your drivers. But the above may help in keeping you from having to completely restart your machine.

One thought does come to mind though. That is checking to see if the wireless is set to turn off when the PC goes in sleep mode. Keeping wireless active could keep it from bugging out.

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change Plan Settings
Change advanced power settings
Wireless Adapter settings > Power Savings Mode > Setting:
There is a choice between (Performance, Low, Med, and Max)
My desktop never sleeps and wireless is set to performance. So I have no experience with the setting, I just know it is there.

Hello,
I'm recently experiencing issues with my Dell Inspiron 15 7559. I have an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 adapter and, ever since yesterday, it stopped working completely. When I click on the wifi button in the taskbar it says the WiFi is "Turned off". However, there's no way to turn it on. Even if I click network settings and click the wifi toggle it instantly goes back to off.
I tried to go through the troubleshooter and it suggests that the physical switch is off. However i have no physical switch and the only related key I have on my keyboard is for the airplane mode (and is, currently, off).

I tried to run a Ubuntu Live disk and it gave the same issue: radio hardware off or something similar.

To make it even weirder, yesterday I had left the laptop alone for an hour or so and when I came back it was working again. But this morning it was off again, and it is not working ever since then. Of course I tried restarting and even restoring from a previous backup, but to no avail.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
L

EDIT: I also tried reinstalling the drivers, both the newest ones from Intel (18.32) and the latest on Dell's website (18.20, IIRC), but nothing changed.

A:WiFi turned off issue

Hi, given what you said about checking this with a boot disk, it sounds more like a hardware problem, assuming you know it worked with the boot disk previously.

(The erratic behaviour you're observing is odd as you know. However I also find MS providing the Wifi tile on the Action Centre (as well as my physical button) confusing).

Presumably you are not also using an ethernet connection.

You can get more information and lots of technical detail if you open
Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network Connections
& rt click on the WiFi connection and click 'Diagnose'.

You can also check these (shown with Wifi connected)

So, I currently have a Toshiba Satellite, L550 Series, and in the new year, my battery started becoming loose in the charging spot, so I turned my computer off for the night to save power, and went out the following day.

When I turned my computer back on, it started to say that I had no internet connection available, and when I tried to troubleshoot, instead of working like it normally does, it said I needed to plug in an ethernet cable, which I don't use at all.

So, I decided to look around my Network and Connections page, and when I clicked the link called "See Full Map", instead of seeing what I normally see (which is my computer, my brothers computer, and my sisters computer, then the internet router) I only saw a sentence along the lines of "The adapter needs to be plugged in".

I have no idea what this means. Any clues, help, ideas? Thanks guys.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

i was working in Maya..actually just browsing.i havent even created anything.the scene was empty.and i just started to make a basic model the computer suddenly turned off.then in 2 seconds turned on again (almost) but the monitor wasnt showing anything.hdd light was off (everytime my computer starts normally it's ON)..cpu fan was rotating slowly.and the diagnostic lights (i guess) were on on the motherboard..i was afraid that cpu may get overheated (because the fan was rotating very slowly) i cut off the electricity.then started the comp again..this time..the fan didin't even start rotating (just showed little signs that it kind of wants to start rotating)..2 seconds that last..then it turned off again..after that it's on for a second then off for another..it just turns on and off if i dont cut the electricity
and the thing that.if i wait some time.then turn on the comp it goes a little long and wants to start ( maybe for 4-5 seconds) and then the same thing..so i thought it might a overheating problem (though i haven't done anything that could cause that) and disconnected the graphics card, the drives and the hdds..didn't help

havent' had these kind of problems before.the comp is in good conditions.bought in 2009

the specs are:

Quad Core 2.66
4GB RAM
GTX 560Ti
Windows 7
580w power supply

and there's a ups..600v/s i think..it's old..dunno if this can cause the problem.just additioanl info

this is urgent..please help with anything u can.thank u very much

A:Computer turned off suddenly, now doesn't turn on

I hate to guess, but my initial reaction is Power Supply. But the UPS could be a complicating factor.

First, I would remove the UPS from the system and test.

Then, try another power supply in your system or try your power supply in another system. Do you have access to another PS you could test with?

Another thing you can try is to disconnect all external devices, all drives, and any other power draws that you can and see if the system will boot with just basic components: PS, MB/CPU, RAM, Graphics.

If we can eliminate the power supply as the cause (prove that it is good) then we can move on to the other potential causes.

Hi,

This morning i turned on my pc and connected a new monitor to it via my gpu, my other monitor was on and suddenly turned off. I had no signal from both my monitors so i could not see what was going on or what had happened, so i tried turning off my pc by holding down the power button for several seconds.....and nothing. Waiting around for a few hours i had enough and turned off the pc via the wall mains socket and left the computer off for another few hours, came back to find Pc does not turn on at all, opened up the case to find the green motherboard light was turned on and yet the pc was still not turning on. So i started with taking off the gpu and other pci cards to see if it would make any difference, it did nothing. took off the psu and tested the psu with the old paperclip trick and it worked fans started spinning so im assuming the psu is working fine. I also checked all the connections to the motherboard, took them off, reinserted them cleaned up the dust etc and yet nothing the last thing i done was i checked to see if the case power button was faulty.....it wasn't. any ideas as to what the cause could be and how to resolve the problem?

Any replies will be appreciated

Thank You

Like a fool I allowed a family member to use my PC against my better judgment this afternoon and now I'm regretting it as all hell has literally broken loose. Long story short I restarted my PC about an hour ago and when it loaded back into Windows (7 ultimate edition x64) it was instantly clear there was a problem. I won't go through all the details but I noticed Webroot wasn't running anymore and Windows was prompting me to turn it back on. When I went to do so instead of Webroot running I was presented with the Webroot installation window instead. I entered my key (Webroot Secure Anywhere) and I got the following message - "Webroot could not be installed. This could potentially be caused by malware on the computer. Would you like to try installing with a randomized filename?" The latter option doesn't work and as a result I cannot get Webroot running again. I've scanned the PC using Emsisoft Anti-malware which found three suspicious items and deleted them. All subsequent scans come back clean but Webroot still won't start/install.Any idea what I can try next?

A:Webroot turned off, cannot turn back on or install?!?

Some further "symptoms" I've come across -

Windows Experience Index has reset itself, i.e there's no score.

My network shares have been reset.

File types are no longer associated.

The hibernation file is back (I'd previously turned it off as I've got an SSD and wanted to save space)

I'm sure there's more I'm yet to spot.

I need some help, I think I turned my video drivers off and now I need some help getting them back on. A few weeks ago my graphics card failed and some dialogue box showed up and then the computer shut down. Since then I have replaced the card and solved another issue I was having. I can not get the computer to come back now, in normal start up or in any of the safe modes. When I start the computer now I get this:

POST beep
BIOS screen
Loading Operating system
Windows error recovery (with booting options)
The four little dots that come together to form the window with starting windows underneath it.
The screen then goes black I get my cursor arrow and it remains that way until I get pissed and shut it down.

How do I turn these back on and resume normal use of my computer? TIA!

Hi, that usually is some hardware issue, unknown what though. IF Windows won't start run this 3 times: Startup Repair
It might need a Repair Install to get you back too.

While in my Windows 7, the green icon was still on, but next to it a red icon appeared and a banner indicating Security Essentials was no longer protecting and I would have to turn it back on. When I tried to turn it back on, it sent me to a menu of other scanning protection programs and would not run a Security Essentials scan. In other words, no option to turn it back on. I turned off the computer, and it rebooted fine, with the green icon restored and no sign of the red. I ran a virus scan and no problems or sign of attack. However, today, the same thing happened.  Obviously I would like Security Essentials to be "turned on" and protecting us...{thanks}.

I have a Toshiba laptop that shut off by itself and won't turn back on. The LED lights will not even come on. I have only had it for 2 years but I use it a lot. The warranty is no good anymore so that is not an option. When I plug the power cord into the wall it still doesn't work so I know its not the battery and I the power cord I have works with an older Toshiba laptop (broken beyond repair) so I know its not that. I have tried the method where you take out the battery and hold the power button down but it still doesn't work.

Anybody have any suggestions?

It sounds like your dc jack might need replacing if there is no LEDs when you plug it into the wall can you try this on your laptop the next time you plug into the wall riddle the cord near where it plugs into the laptop and tell me if the LEDs come on.

Hello sachin and welcome to Seven Forums.

Everything I was going to suggest, you've already tried. But here are a couple more things you can try. Run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

See if there are any application conflicts by doing a clean startup (AKA clean boot.)

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

And one of the Forum experts prepared this troubleshooting guide that has some other suggestions.

I recently bought an ASUS a456ur, and had windows 10 anniversary update installed into it. I had this problem: i can't turn off the wifi unless i turn on the airplane mode, and make all the connection turned off, including bluetooth, which i needed to connect to a bluetooth speaker of mine. And also, if i turned on the airplane mode, i can't turn it off by turning on wifi.
i tried to turn off the wifi by various way. i tried to disabling it from the menu popped out when you click the wifi logo from your notification bar, i tried to disabling it from the settings, and tried to disabling it from the actiion center, and none of them is working.
things i have done:
try disabling wifi from ubuntu, and it works,
updating the driver of the network devices

A:Wifi can't be turned off, unless by airplane mode

Even with the Function key combo you cannot? Sometimes you have to press Fn and the Function key, if you did not change it to standard Function key operation.

my ThinkPad laptop (windows XP) all of a sudden will not connect wirelessly. If I plug it into the cable directly, it is fine. But that isn't the way I use it!

It says "no wireless networks were found in range" even when sitting right next to the router!

I went into Device Manager, clicked on network adapters and double clicked the wireless card (prowireless 2915ABG) and next to the Intel is a button that says wireless OFF! When I tried to turn it back on, got an error message: "this setting will only take effect if the adapter's power button has been switched on".

Huh???? what power button?? the wifi card is inside the laptop....
help!!!!! my PC and my NOOK tablet have no problem connecting to the network, by the way, wirelessly.

I also went into Network and shyaring center, clicked on the manage wireless network link and removed all the network names. No dice.

help!!!! what do I do next?

If all else fails you could read the documentation for your laptop to see what/where the wireless switch is. It may be the Fn + F5 key combination.

Hi,

I'm from India and I'm having a serious problem with my Wifi Router. I'm using Asus RT-10N+ wireless router for last 8 months it use to run smooth but since last week it has started troubling me. I was experiencing momentary disconnection where I got no Internet Connection but since yesterday the router works fine. Whenever I ping I'm getting reply my ISP's login page is also opening and it shows Connected to the Internet but I'm unable to access any website from my browser's.

I've checked the Wifi config all the settings are fine. Now just to be sure I connected the main LAN cable to my CPU and manually inserted the IP, Gateway, DNS, etc into the network connection properties and now the internet seems to operate fine. I can open all websites but whenever I'm plugging the LAN cable into the Router and establishing the connection everything seems normal but I can't seem to access any website.

Please give me a solution.

A:Wifi Router has turned into a Zombie.

Hi there

Recreate the wireless connection on your PC.
Windows 7 - Goto Control Pannel -> Network and Sharing Center.
Click on "Manage Wireless Networks" (Left Pane).
Remove the current wireless connection.

****Try the following only if you know how to setup a router from scratch or you have access to your ISP's tech support so that they can guide you....

Reset the router and start from scratch.
Hope this helps

This is probably my own fault due to my obsessive tinkering. Im always playing with things I shouldn't (On computers that is). The other day I downloaded Auslogics Speed Boost & I started playing with the system tweaks, I ended up getting a horrible blocky background underneath all of my desktop Icons behind the item description (The writing). Before the item decription blended in nicely with my background picture. So rather than re-trace my steps logically I went into the Display propertites under the appearence tab then advance & started changing things in there, why I dont know, I convinced myself I knew what I was doing when in actual fact I was clueless. Its taken me ages to get everything back to how it was all but this one thing. My folders are absolutely huge, the view is thumbnails. Before I messed it up they were I guess the standard windows size, I could see the pictures that were within the folder. Now the picture sare there but they are all distorted through being so big. I've looked everywhere I know to change them back.
Please can someone tell me where to change the size of your folders ? Much appreciated.

A:My folders have all turned huge!(Can som1 help me turn them back pls?)

Hello Trent5281

So this is just a problem with folders with "thumbnails" ? All you r other folders are OK?

Try disabling and then re-enabling thumbnails.
Disable
1. Open Windows Explorer.

2. Click Tools/Folder Options/View.

3. Under Files and Folders, click the checkbox that says "Do not cache thumbnails."

4. Apply/OK

I`m not sure if you need to reboot or not
Then go back and re-enable again

OR
try this

Enable or Disable Thumbnails

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 277 left hand side

You would have to click "Disable" and then later run "Enable"

Hi there,

I really hope somebody might be able to help me fix my laptop!

I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1, but there were issues.  I cleared my hard drive and went for the Windows reformat option but my laptop said there were >1000 updates and that I should not turn off my computer.  After a while, it seemed to stop updating.  I left it for a few hours but nothing progressed, so I foolishly turned off my computer...

Now, every time I try turning it on, it reverts to the "Failure configuring updates.  Reverting changes.  Do not turn off computer".

I've tried F8 and shift+F11 tricks that I've seen on others forums - neither of these worked.

Is there anything that can be done to rescue it now?  If I did just leave the laptop for a few days, would it be able to recover?!

Sorry if this has been asked before, am new to the forum and desperate!

Many thanks in advance
Eira

While using the notebook, I realized there was no more sound so I went to a support site for troubleshooting. I changed the settings and restarted, but there was still no audio coming out. Suddenly the screen went dark and the LEDs on the keyboard dock became illuminated. Then they turned off and the computer has not turned on again. The charging port LED on the keyboard docking station still lights up when plugged in, but not the tablet, even when plugged in directly. No vibration, sound, or any lights when pressing the power button to boot up the tablet. What happened?

Hello, my name is Alexander. I am new here.

I just decided to turn on my laptop to play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight. First I pressed the power button to turn on the laptop and it blinked, the battery light also blinked. As I remember the battery was charged, so I decided to turn it on again. After pressing the button, the COMPAQ boot screen appeared but suddenly all the screen gone gray for some unknown reason. I pressed and held the power button for 10 seconds but nothing happened. Then I removed the battery but the laptop didn't turned off. Now, I leaved the laptop for 3 hours and it didn't shut down.

Last night it worked fine. I was playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 and listening to some Guns 'n' Roses songs.

Specs (Sorry, I forgot the laptop model):
RAM: 2GB.
Graphics card: Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset.
Processor: 2GHz.
HD: 137GB.
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic.

A:COMPAQ Presario screen turned gray and I can't turn it off.

Hold the power button for 15 seconds or until the computer shuts off. Let it set for a few minutes. Put the battery in and make sure you are using the power adapter too. Start the computer. If it won't boot normally press the F8 key repeatedly until you can boot into Safe Mode.

Hi,

I am not a well experienced person in IT. I have faced a problem with my laptop and it's symptoms or history are as following:
- LAN connection was with no internet access several times this week, but after a computer restart it returned healthy.
- I've disabled by mistake Microsoft 2013 from msconfig startup tab, to stop launching Lync in start up programs.
- After several attempts to recover my LAN connection, the start bar became grey, no internet access, no access to McAfee unless on scan mode, cannot restore settings even with safe mode, it justs doesn't respond, as well as an important message appears in the flag icon to turn on service security, once attempted it returns with the following message "the windows security centre service can't be started".
- several services are not responding unless in safe mode.

Please advise with way forward.

Thanks in advance.

When I enable the internet connection on my laptop running Windows 7 64-bit, task manager shows multiple dllhost*32.exe instances start popping up and the CPU maxes out along with high RAM usage. Once I click the button to turn on off the WiFi everything eventually dies down and the computer becomes usable again. I noticed this start happening on my wife's user account, and when I log in under my user account with admin rights I noticed when I turn on WiFi the dllhost*32.exe instances come up in task manager with her account listed.

I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which caught and removed a list of items (I didn't save a screen shot, sorry) and have since installed and run Microsoft Security Essentials which came up that my computer is clean but the issues still happen.

Few weeks back I upgraded my router to a dual band not realizing my laptop only worked with 2.4ghz g/n spec. Because I was having an issue with another network in my neighborhood causing connection to the internet to be spotty. I fixed the problem by purchasing an external usb dual band dongle. Only problem I have now is there's a blue led that flashes letting you know your both connected and how fast the connection is by flashing faster.

My family and I live with my wife's uncle, so our bedroom also serves as living room, including tv and office. With my laptop being right next to me. Needless to say, this flashing blue light is driving me nuts when I'm trying to get to sleep. So, I'm wondering, can I wrap some electrical tape around it without affecting signal reception or transmission? I would consider just pulling the USB dongle out when I'm ready to sleep, but afraid I might damage the dongle and mess up the port by constantly plugging and unplugging the dongle. Sorry I've rambled on so much! Chalk it up to me not getting enough sleep!!!

Good day,

Due to my coming posting to a place without a wifi connection for my tablet, I decided to turn my laptop into a wifi hotspot.

I googled and found this post:

How to turn your Windows 7 laptop into a wireless hotspot | News | TechRadar

I thought, "Hey, that's cool". So I did everything mentioned there to the letter. It worked, my laptop was able to create its own hotspot, which was well cool. I connected my tablet to the new wifi connection. It did work, but I had no internet connection. So I assume that whatever I did, it disconnected my wireless adapter to created the hotspot. So I thought, that's fine, I'll just use a network cable.

Now here's the real problem.
1) I disconnected the connection, but my wireless network on my laptop told me that I had no internet connection.
2) I checked my tablet and reconnected the tablet to my home wireless network. It worked fine. I'm posting this using my tablet on home wireless.
3) No issue with my laptop nor the hardware, because prior to following the tutorial, my wireless network works just fine.
4) I tried disabling the device in Network & Sharing. No difference.

A:No internet connection after I turned my laptop into wifi hotspot

To my knowledge the WiFi adapter work as either a connection point to a WiFi router/Wireless access point or AS a wireless Access Point, WiFi Hot Spot, but not both. So you would need to connect the notebook to a router (internet connection) with a Ethernet cable. Then the computer will take the internet from the Cable and send it out to connected devices.

Hello. I run Windows Xp service pack 2 currently. I also regularly update and scan my computer with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware. The only thing that SuperAntiSpyware may find are Adware.Tracking Cookies. Other than that nothing else turns up. Since removing the Vundo with help from the HJT forum, I have not been able to turn on my firewall. Windows Security Alerts tells me at start up that the firewall is turned off. When I go to recommendations and then enable now, Windows says it is unable to turn it on and that I should turn it on from the control panel. When attempting to turn it on from the control panel, it is is unchangeable. An attachment shows how the firewall control panel appears. After clicking out of that alert, Windows Security Alerts then says that Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is turned off. I check Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition and it appears to be running fine. It may be working since a few times since the Vundo it has caught some incoming threats to the computer. I am wondering what steps I should take to turn on the firewall and how to check if Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is working okay or not. Thank you.

Hi...

I've set up my internet-connected laptop (Acer Aspire One with Windows 7 Starter) as wifi hotspot. The hotspot works to the extent that it lets another computer connect, but it does not provide (pass through) the internet access I have (via 3G USB modem).

While searching the net for useful information I came across the recent thread
No internet connection after I turned my laptop into wifi hotspot

Following up on the two tutorials mentioned in that thread,
Windows 7 Tip of the Week: Use Wireless Hosted Networking to Share An Internet Connection Wirelessly | FAQ/Tip content from Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows
and
Windows 7 Hotspot: Share Wifi With Your Laptop
I noticed that on my laptop the important Share tab is missing that can be seen in the first image in the first tutorial and also in the first image in the section "Changing Adapter Settings" in the secodn tutorial.

The network adapters I can see on my laptop are

Local Area connection
(unplugged)

3G Internet
USB modem

Wireless connection
Atheros AR5B95

Wireless Connection 2
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

Many thanks in advance for suggestions and probing questions

A:internet connection not shared by my laptop turned wifi hotspot

If the sharing tab is missing then it means that the driver isn't up to date. About the only way to fix that is to look for a more recent version of the wireless driver. Just updating or reinstalling the driver might be enough although some adaptors simply can't support this feature as per Paul Thurrott's page on this.

It all started with google redirect. I wish I would have found this forum sooner rather than later. With that said, I had already DLed MbAM and removed half a dozen various infections just to be left without a WiFi internet connection. I had also run a few of the tools such as the GMER and Combofix before landing on this site. So i appologize in advance if this could cause more headache. I did however manage to save all the original logs if need-be.

The computer itself is actually running much faster however, without the internet connection I can't tell if the redirect was cured.

I do not have a restore Windows CD (Netbook). I do have an empty pendrive, a clean computer, and internet access to boot. Also, I'm including the most pertinant MBAM log ... so here we go...

An update...

After further poking, I found that this system had a partition which contained the original windows image. Since there was no valuable data on this computer I decided to go ahead with the recovery. I have regained my internet connection...and some sanity. However, I am thinking this may not be the end of the infection... or is it?

Hi there
We just got my dad an ADVENT 7109 laptop. Its a great little machine for the money, but what we find very very annoying is that it boots up without having WIFI turned on.
It doesnt have a switch on it so you could permanently leave it on, if has a actual button(that can only be pressed once the pc has been turned on).
Does anyone know how I can make this laptop have wifi automatically turn itself on when I boot it up?
It is quite annoying.
thanks

Hey, I just got this computer about 3 weeks ago, it's an Acer Aspire.
There were 3 updates being "configured" at 0% progress for over an hour, so, I manually shut off my PC.. I decided to restart windows normally but all it does is freeze when i log in, and other times it won't let me even log in before freezing. My computer didn't come with a windows installation disk and I'm in a foreign country... is there anything I can do?!??!?!?

Also, I tried restoring it, and it restored only to bring me right back to the "configuring updates" screen. This time progress remained at 100% for over 9 hours... weird. So, I shut it off again.. Do I keep doing damage to my computer by continuing to shut it off?! ahhhhhhh

I have always had automatic update set to notify me, but let me choose what and when to update. This morning, I got a notification that updates had been installed, and to restart my computer. When I checked, it had set itself back to update automatically. What could cause this?

I have a Dell 1545 laptop, a little over a year old. Running Avira and Comodo. All scans show no viruses or malware.

A:Windows Update Turned Itself On

Download and run a full and updated scan with malwarebytes.
If negative, just reset updates. Probably a new update caused the change. If it happens again, post and we shall try to resolve the mystery.
It may have been caused by the install of new software or even caused by corruption when booting.
To be on the safe side, also, perform and sfc scan.

It was in the starting windows page and it said 60,000 files of 350,000 or something like that.. then after a while the monitor didn't show anything and moving my mouse/pressing keyboard did nothing so I simply turned off the computer guessing it was finished. Now it hangs on the Starting Windows page and after 5 minutes gets a BSOD -.-

System Restore could not complete successfully and says no files were changed... and startup repair can't fix it or something!

A:Turned off computer during SP1 update..

Sounds like it's time for a fresh install.... Try to get the media that has SP1 integrated... goes much smoother and cleaner....

I'm not sure what happened, but windows automatic update turned its self off for no reason. I just got the bubble popping up saying it was turned off. I checked system under control panel and it was checked as "automatic updates turned on". I turned it off, applied, then back on, applied, then okay. Reset the computer for good messure and nothing changed.

Anyway I can fix it?

Hope someone can help me out.

Danielle

Hi everyone.

I know I have a virus on my PC because it keeps getting the Windows update turned off. The Search & Destroy keeps finding it, but the Malware tool suggested here says everything is clean. I did run the combofix.exe and the computer is performing better. But I know something is still there. What should I do?

Thanks for you help and thank you for having this website going.

However, it takes me more than 15 times to try and get the WiFi back on. I turn the flight mode on and off to jump start it and it doesn't work. I try to turn my wifi box on and off and it doest work. I restart my laptop and that doesnt help. I've looked online and couldn't find the answer hence why I've resulted to come here. I'm to the point where I want to return my laptop and never use hp again due to the level of frustration! Help please?
