dell driver updates on new computer

Q: dell driver updates on new computer

N7110/win7sp1/x64

Hi again after a long absence...

So the title says it, several questions about installing latest drivers on new N7110, windows 7:

Is it really necessary to 1) set a restore point, and 2) reboot after each driver install? Tell me it ain't so...

Bonus question: The 7 search is.... a problem... for me. Would someone point me toward a xp-like search utility to find and dump the crapware Dell installed? I need to be able to see everything and drill through it systematically - like I could with XP search. A FREE program would be preferable.

Thanks.

To clarify, not ALL driver updates require reboot, but almost all, and I've read elsewhere to set a restore point with each. BTW, some new drivers require TWO reboots, one after uninstalling the old driver, then again after installing the new one. Sheesh! I get the reason(s) for individual restore points and reboot, but 23-46 times?

A: dell driver updates on new computer

No, you do not have to create a restore point after each driver - though there's no harm in doing so either. And no, you don't have to reboot after EVERY driver is installed, only certain ones (such as the motherboard / chipset driver). Others can be installed "in bunches" with a reboot after 4 or 5. But why are you installing 23-46 drivers - or am I misreading that????

Also, I just don't use system restore. I use disc imaging, which is a much better solution IMO.

And last, as for what you refer to as "crapware", you have a couple of choices:

1) Just do a clean install - that's what I do every time I get or setup a new system or
2) Open Programs & Features and go through each app that is installed, Google it, and decide if you want to keep it or uninstall it

I don't know if this is a legitimate Dell contact or not, and do not have premium support. It is frustrating not to have a way to contact Dell directly with this kind of question, but ...
can anyone tell me if this is a normal method Dell uses to advise about driver updates?  I would have thought that the Dell Assistant would handle such a thing without emails.

Help!

Dell will soon be releasing updated desktop docking stations that are compatible with Type C and Thunderbolt systems.   These docks may require that you update your system's BIOS and install docking station drivers before they will function properly.   Older BIOS versions or lack of docking station drivers could result in the dock not being recognized by your system or not working as expected.   Once released, these docking station drivers and updated BIOS versions will be available on support.dell.com for supported laptop systems.

Hi,
what's the real release date for the TB15? It was announced to be released on January, 28th. But I've read in a few places, that it maybe would not be released until end of March... What's the truth?

Hi . I'm new to the forum and i need help with an update program. Now I'm not entirely sure of this but i am pretty sure that it is realtek trying to update my drivers which causes vista to restart. When it restarts, it goes to system restore, which i perform, and when it reboots it gets stuck on the moving yellow bar that says Microsoft Corporation underneath it. This has happened several times and my father possibly thinks it is Steam and playing the game Left 4 Dead that is causing the drivers to update. I have nowhere else to turn . PLEASE help me!

XPS13 with Windows 10.  See screen shot below.  Dell Support Assist program says the two driver updates are recommended.  clicking "install" it shows progress to install, then says installed, but on refresh or re-entry to the program it still shows them as needing to be installed.  No errors generated.  Other driver updates done the same way without issue.  Suggestions?

A:Dell SupportAssist - says driver updates are installed but still showing need to be installed after refresh?

Don't use Dell Support assist with windows 10. Windows 10 will install generic drivers if Dell doesn't have win 10 drivers. You should mention the full model name of the computer. Does Dell support your model for upgrading to win 10? If so, get the win 10 drivers from Dell Drivers and Downloads.

Problems started earlier in the month when updating my NVidia drivers. Computer worked for the last few weeks but would get random display errors. I attempted to revert to previous drivers however it did not fix the problem. 2 days ago, computer started crashing and will now only boot in safemode. I attempted a restore prior to the NVidia install, but the restore point was not available for that time period.

I've also uninstalled/reinstalled the video card and windows automatically installs the drivers.

I uploaded the zip file per instructions.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

I just got a second-hand Dell Optiplex GX260. The original purchaser bought it with XP pre-loaded, and had only the reinstallation CD, which I got. Unfortunately, the CD says "This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers." This apparently is true as I'm finding that I have to use the device mfr's disk to get drivers whenever I attach something to the computer. I was wondering if there's a separate driver disk that came with computer (the guy I bought from doesn't recall), and if so, where I can get one. I tried calling Dell, but got tired of pressing and holding.

I just installed Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit on a Dell Dimension 1100 computer. Afterwards I noticed that all or alot of the drivers were missing so I went to look them up on my laptop and download them so I could transfer them to the computer and found out that the Dell 1100 is not compatible with windows 7 and installing it is "not recommended", and there were no windows 7 drivers available for that model. Other than having crappy screen resolution and probably some other problems that I problem haven't noticed yet it seems to work fine. Is there any way around this? Would the drivers for the other OS's work? I'm only mildly proficient at computer stuff so if you can help try to keep it in layman's terms. Also if there is a way around this, which drivers do I need to download? I didn't think you needed to download every available one. Thanks.

Hello,

I am hoping someone can provide some assistance in getting rid of this BSOD problem.

Here is what happened.

I was using two driver update programs: One called Driver Booster 2 by Iobit and the other called Slimdrivers.

I updated various drivers including Nvidia which I had previously uninstalled but it kept popping up so I just let it go. The next thing I know, after that is installed and there were no more drivers left to install, I ran Windows Update and it also wanted to installed Nvidia again. I didn't have much choice in the matter...before I knew it, it was installing and I had to restart my computer. When the computer turned on again, I used it for a little while then it started to overheat something terrible. The computer was so hot I thought it was going to start on fire. Almost as soon as it started overheating, I got the BSOD and within a second it restarted or shut down. I can't remember which. The fan was running at top speed but that still wasn't enough. I could have cooked an egg on the backside of this thing.

So the next day, I started the computer up again and I uninstalled Nvidia completely using Iobit's Uninstaller to remove all traces of it in my computer. But the other problem I have now is that it still runs dangerously hot within a few hours.

I've uploaded the zip file as per the instructions. There must be some kind of conflict going on.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:BSOD after installing NVidia updates and other driver updates

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup program before you upload another zip.

Hi there

We got the crashed on machine running on Windows 10 started on last Wednesday and it's been working well for almost 1 month. After troubleshooting and restoring, we came across it's something to do with the Intel Drivers Display update that might causing this.

Once we restored the machine, the Windows Updates has already listed the driver ready to install as well all KBs. My question how do I stop/clear this list from running?

To prevent this update automatically on the driver, I went to the System > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings > No. However this only preventing it running in the future and I need to stop appearing from the list as stated previously.

I came across previously with Windows 7 which is relating on one of particular updates that causing stuck on Windows Updates ... I know there is away to stop this action and clear up this updates cataloq. But not sure on Windows 10.

I'm appreciated your feedback and comment.

Thanks

Use Windows Update to find driver updates

In Windows Update click Custom Install in the main column, and then click Select optional hardware updates in the left-hand column.

Windows Update examines all parts of your system to determine what needs updating and it may recommend more than just driver updates. It's a good idea to visit Windows Update regularly for driver updates and other non-critical updates.

I recently set up a new Dell 7710 Precision Workstation (Xeon E3-1535M v5 w/Intel HD Graphics P530; Nvidia Quadro M5000M; Windows 7 Pro). The Dell Precision Optimizer (DPPO) tells me there are no updates at all (no Critical, Recommended, or Optional). However, the Intel Driver Update Utility tells me I have an older chipset (14.6.1.1030) that should be replaced by a newer chipset (10.0.27). I don't know if the DPPO is taking into account particular aspects of this system that make the 14.6.1.1030 the “correct” (even if not the latest) chipset. Perhaps the DPPO should override the Intel utility. Any thoughts?

Hello,
I have recently upgraded to windows 10 and everything seems file except one problem I am facing which is the wifi card connectivity issues. My connection to router drops very frequently, curently the generic driver which windows think is appropriate is installed. I wanted to undate that with Dell's driver which I can't find on driver download section. 64 bit WiFi driver is NOT there. 32 Bit driver is but that won't install on my machine.
Can someone from Dell help? either to give me the link for correct driver download or confirm driver is not available in which case I would need to downgrade to windwos 8 as the system is unusable in its current state.

A:Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 SE - Windows 10 64 Bit WiFi Driver not available on Dell Site

Hello,
On the Drivers & Download pages for the Inspiron 15R 7520 there are only 64-bit options for Windows, whether 8.0,8.1, or 10.   So those drivers are the ones for the 64-bit version of Windows 10, as long as you filter the operating system option to Windows 10 64-bit.
The file name may state "Win32" but if you click on the "View Details" link, and then check "Supported Operating Systems" near the bottom of the page you'll find that the driver supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
You don't mention which wireless card you have in that system so I can't link directly to the specific driver.  Which card do you have and what error are you getting when trying to install the drvier?
I would also recommend updating the firmware on your router.  Many routers need an update to be able to handle Windows 10 specific drivers and cards reliably.   What router brand and model are you connecting to?  And do you have problems with all routers or just this one.
Lastly, here is a link to the Dell Networking & Wireless Support Center.  You will find a few support articles in there that may be of help to you.
Let me know which card you have and when the last time you updated your router and, if you can't get the connection to work, I'll see what else I can suggest to help you.

Forget the driver update software, unless you are having issues you don't need to update any drivers and if you do you should get then directly from the manufacturers website and not via a 3rd party product.

Also please do not repost the same question in multiple sections of the site as that is against forum rules.

A:Dell dell inspiron - No USB driver installed

To make sure your Going from SATA to USB, if so, then are you using the USB with + or power port.  Depending on the motherboard.  (had the same issue in the E Series Dells)    Also, SATA does not provide power on its own, it needs to be plugged in, or you need to plug the two cables into two usb ports
the cable for it could be One connector, and two on the other side.  The main cable is the data+power, the other is the extra Power.  USB gives Max 3.3V, SATA usually need 5 or 12V to work.
If all else fails pull your CD drive and connect to that if you can.

Hello,
I have a new Dell XPS9530 which has a software application that was installed by default called "True Color" which is normally in the task bar near the clock.
I ordered the official Dell OEM Windows 8.1 disk (red in color) and the XPS 9530 Driver CD (Gray in Color) and did a fresh install on my computer.  Neither disk contains the previously installed True Color application and I also don't see it on the downloads section on the Dell website.
Technical support was not familiar with this application so I didn't get very far - was just told to reinstall everything which I've already done.
Where is the True Color Application and why isn't it on the recovery disks since it was installed by default from the factory?

I'm working with a Dell Dimension C521 PC. It came with a PCI-Express video card which apparently has failed, yet the motherboard itself has on-board video. The system will boot using this video output (as opposed to the card which produced nothing) but when it finally gets to windows the auto-detect driver routine kicks in and begins to detect the video card, prompting the user to "Continue Anyway" to finish installing unsigned drivers. Unfortunately this event takes place in front of the installation of the USB keyboard and mouse (times like these I wish it had PS/2 ). Anyway, whether I boot up into Safe Mode or normal a prompt comes up about installing drivers for the on-board chipset. I can't interact with it because the driver install routine for the keyboard/mouse becomes interrupted.

A:Dell Dimension C521; USB key/mouse driver load interrupted by video card driver load

Bump. I've been thinking... the only way I think this can be fixed is if I boot from a Linux CD or something similar and delete a particular set of drivers for this video card. It can't prompt you to install any drivers if they don't exist, right? But I don't know where to go to delete such files and prevent them from automatically trying to install themselves. Any ideas?

I have a latitude 7350 laptop and was prompted this morning by the dell assistant to do several updates - I think there were 6 in total but 1 was excluded as it related to bios update.
I accepted the updates, and left them going, then when I came back to my laptop 10 minutes later it will no longer start up.
When you power on, a dell screen will appear, followed by another dell screen, then windows starts for a fraction of a second and then immediately says 'shutting down'. This is exactly what then happens every time I boot up.
Any thoughts for how to recover this as I can't see any options to deviate from this loop.

A:Laptop won't startup after dell updates

Start pressing F2 immediately after powering up - check to make sure the system is set to UEFI mode (no legacy boot).  If one of the updates was a BIOS update it may have changed the setup for the boot sequence.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

A few weeks ago I did two updates - one was the Dell Support Center update and the other was an update entitled KB951978. Since then, I'm unable to shut down my computer - I get an error message asking me to end "sprtcmd.exe". I hit "end now", and usually it shuts down OK. In addition, it's taking much longer for web pages to load and applications to run.

I'm scared to uninstall the updates - is it safe to do that? Everything was perfectly fine until then. I saw the other thread with tips on how to do it.

My question is: do I uninstall the Dell Support Center UPDATE or the entire thing itself? I'm afraid to get rid of it altogether.

Also, should I try uninstalling the KB951978 update? I have no idea or comfort level with what that is.

Thanks!

I started with a Macintosh 128K in 1984 and switched to PC around 1988 using AutoCad. I guess the first question is: What is 'this topic'? I'm assuming it's about issues with a Dell laptop. My wife's laptop is a Dell about 9 mo old and it is running Win7 Home 64 bit, 8 GB RAM, 2 HD. She never updates anything. Today I started with Win Update. The 2 updates were not installed. That is a first. I spent 3 hr online trying to find solutions. The latest message is "cmd.exe is corrupt". Say what? Where/when did that happen and what do you do about it? That too is a first. After trying to FIX things for 3 hr, the laptop does seem to run faster. :-)

Since then I've tried to RESTORE her laptop to an earlier restore point. That's not happening. I tried 3 different restore points and there was grief at each one.

The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

Anyone got an idea how often Microsoft incorporates hardware driver updates in the Windows Update, or how that works in general? I noticed that for my graphics adapter (see specs) there have 2 driver updates been released by the manufacturer since the one that Windows Update provided.

A:Driver updates?!

Microsoft doesn't incorporate hardware updates but places them in the "Optional" catagory. If you check for updates manually in the Control Panel or when going to the update site itself directly and selecting the custom option there.

The MS update site will always be behind the manufacturer's own support site until newer versions are uploaded there. Likewise 3rd party sites that carry MS updates will always lag a little behind going directly to the MS download center.

One thing to do first however before jumping on updates just because they are newer is to check to see if anyone is reporting any problems with the latest before simply rushing to download and install. Occasionally the latest may turn out to be a problem and why need to fix what isn't broken already?

Does anyone know if it will be necessary to update drivers etc. for Windows 8.1 as it was for Win 8?
I refer specifically to my HP AIO which required quite a large update to work with Win 8.
I understand the update not upgrade will occur in Sept or Oct and the RTM date in Aug.
I ask about the drivers etc. as I did not install the preview edition and perhaps some have done so and can speak to experience..
Thank you
Peter

Usually the same drivers will work fine, but it wouldn't hurt to check the device manufacturer's website to see if they may have any newer driver versions that support 8.1 as well that may work better.

A:Driver Updates

Doesnt really matter that much. Provided everything is working, theres no real issue ( I remeber Crysis coming out, with really really bad issues- Nvidia issued new ones to cure it), so dont worry about it. Most of the time with a new driver, the fixes are minor, and you may find a quoted increase in speed, usually 5% on a good day. So generally, if theres a problem, lok fo rnew drivers, if theres not, update if you feel like it

Hi,

I run PC Pitstop's Scan fairly regularly. I like that they give you instructions on how to care for problems manually, even though they sell programs that can do the adjustments for you.

However, I am a little bit frustrated as they said that I need new drivers for my video card and audio card. I did a search for the drivers they listed as updated, and one did not match the Windows logo verification process (and I was warned that this could have very bad results), and neither showed up on the manufacturers' sites. It seems that the only way I can get updated drivers is to pay for PC Pitstop's Driver update program.

Anyone have any input??

FloCat

A:Driver Updates

The old adage applies here, if it ain't broken don't fix it. PC Pitstop contains a registry clean which we don't endorse the use of here at BC. The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results". Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

I just want to know what other people think about this subject. I have been an on top of it kind of guy when it comes to having the latest and greatest updates and upgrades that can be found from manufacturers websites about my hardware software updates. I still believe that I should upgrade or update my software for my hardware. However as I read a lot of forum subjects on this and as I share other peoples experiences of problems with their machines behaving correctly after certain updates ( mostly new drivers). THE BIG QUESTION IS: IF my system is running fine now (for all my games and everything else ,this is an example only, for my video card) why should I install their lastest driver for my video card? If I do it may perform better but I am currently experiencing zero problems. It may also0 create problems if I do. What is your idea about this?

A:Driver Updates.

Hi Marshall,

I would say see what was improved, fixed, or added to the new driver version. If it is something that you would need or like, then install the new driver. If it does not seem to affect you any, then you might just wait to see what the next version will have if your currently installed driver is working just fine you.

Another option is to create a System Restore Point before installing the driver incase you need to restore the computer afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi all:

So I just installed Windows 10 last night. It went fine and my system is working well. No worries there. I have been reading about updating drivers to Win10 compatibility. Is there a way to tell which driver need updating (beyond going into Device Manager and clicking 'update drivers' for each piece of hardware)? I'm mostly concerned about drivers for my video card and motherboard. Unfortunately AMD seems to have a hard time creating drivers that, you know, work, and I'm on a version of my GPU drivers that I know is stable. Any advice on installing Win10 drivers people have would help. Thanks.

A:Driver updates

You need to go to your mobo's website and see if there are 10 drivers listed and also if there is a BIOS update that maybe required or needed to fix some issues with 10. Do the samething for AMD GPU.

I have an AMD HD Radeon 6790 and the latest driver version is 15.7.1....and it's expressly for windows 10.

I've been looking for a free driver manager to search my pc and install drivers that my computer needs.  I ran a Google search and can't seem to find any way of getting drivers except by purchasing a driver manager.  The two I checked out SEEM to be legitimate, but I'm still wary.  I thought Microsoft Updates takes care of updating all drivers, but evidently not.  I looked through your "downloads" tab and found only one (I forget the name), but the description said it removed all remnants of the old drivers; nothing about locating and installing new ones.  I'd sure appreciate advice for a free driver manager.  And would I also install the one tool mentioned above to get rid of old drivers before adding new ones??  I'd sure appreciate your help cause I know NUTHHH-ING about drivers. Thanks much.

A:Need driver updates for Win 7

The best hardware drivers update path is direct only from the manufacturing support site. While some OEM laptops like HP, Sony and Dell have bundled or available softwares to check for periodic updates in the background for drivers and BIOS as like for Windows is Windows update configured for default or recommended settings, there are no 3rd party softwares available online specifically tied to these computer manufacturers for driver updates other than the former mentioned.

What is the best way to keep ALL your drivers current?? I have been using Device Manager but I'm not sure this is the best approach. It has never shown a driver to be out of date after having checked the web.

Hello Rickory,

If there isn't a driver for your hardware in Windows Vista, there's a good chance it's available online through Windows Update. That's why you should set Windows Vista to automatically download and install all recommended updates for your computer.Windows Update detects your specific hardware configuration and downloads only the drivers you need (along with recommended software updates). To learn how to get recommended updates automatically, see Turn automatic updating on or off.

For more details, see The hunt for drivers.

Hope this helps!

Generally speaking, if my Win7 does its daily system updates and my OS is working along without noticeable problems, should I be checking to see if my various drivers are up to date?

Thanks, all.

hey prowler, i was told by a tech here locally, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Not sure if that's a consensus in here, but I guess we'll see after this post!

Does anyone know a free site that could tell me which drivers I need and where to find them?

Is driveragent.com worth the 29.95?

I have tried using everest to find the drivers but the sites dont have it or I am scared to pick the driver myself.
I need a program that will make it trickyproof and give me a button to click saying this is what you need, click here.

Thanks for your help and I wasn't sure if this is where this question went but it does concern audio and video.

If mods want to move it I won't be offended.

Thanks in advance for the help you might give me and the help you have given me.

A:Driver Updates

TBH you should just go to the manufactures website and click on "downloads/updates" then input your card info as requested. It's extremely simple, and takes no time at all to do. This is for both sound and graphic cards.

IMHO, paying the $29.95 would be a waste of money, as you can get the info for free from the manufacturers website.

Alternately, you could probably google "newest drivers for Nvidia 7800 GTX" or whatever your card is (both sound and graphics).

What type of graphics card/sound card do you have (ie. radeon 9800 pro or sb! live 24-bit)?

If you make sure and visit Windows update on the second Tuesday of every month (or after), they will keep your computer updated with most drivers.

Hi there,

I am about to switch over an older Win 98SE version to Win XP Pro and one of the steps is upgrading all the pertinent drivers for XP Pro. I've been looking at some websites like driver guide and corporate websites to do this, but am not sure how to determine if the new driver is compatible with the older hardware or not. I don't want to have the computer lock-up or implode if I download and install the wrong driver for BIOS, modem, etc. Know what I mean?! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks a million!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all,

I have just returned my PC to fairly good operating speed, after a period of what appears to have been utility software conflicts.

I don't know if I should now attempt to go for broke by updating drivers (as detected by one of the freebie downloads at the top of your site), or whether it's best to abide by the rule "If it ain't broke - don't fix it!".

Listed as being out of date are: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000; C-Media AC97 Audio Device; Soft V92 Data Fax Modem (is this redundant anyway as I am now on a cable modem?); SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter; InterVideo WinDVD 2.2.

The existing drivers are likely to be just over 3 years old.

If any likely benefits are only going to be marginal and the potential for scrambling my PC's brain a distinct liklihood, I would like to be advised to leave well alone.

Not having updated any drivers previously, I don't know what if anything I'm missing.

I am also unaware as to whether it's as simple as downloading and saving to my desktop and running, with the download doing all the tidying up after, or if I am just going to clutter my system up with redundant files and registry entries that no longer apply.

If there might be genuine benefits to be had, then fine - but if I'm really unlikely to notice the difference on such a basic piece of kit as my own (AMD Athlon XP, 1500 MHz (4.5 x 333) 1700+; ASRock K7S41GX (2 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 AMR, 2 DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN); IE7; Wind... Read more

Quite obviously there is a feature of Windows 7 that I misunderstood. I have my updates set to download and notify, including drivers etc. Well, I had a video driver dated in the 90's. About a week ago, I began having freezing problems, and was able to rectify the problem by updating the aforementioned driver. The new driver was dated March 2010.

Since I thought that any new drivers would be delivered via Windows Update, where did I go wrong? The new driver was dated 3/2010, would I have received the driver update if I had waited?

Incidentally, my computer is now working better than ever.

For the information of any reader the new driver is from The ATI -Catlyst Control Center. I think the driver is in very common use.

A:Driver Updates

According to the Windows Update Help file.... "Optional updates are not downloaded or installed automatically."

Also...

Quote:
Optional updates can include updates, drivers, or new software from Microsoft to enhance your computing experience. You need to installed these manually.

Hmmm...I was under the impression that these downloaded automatically as well, though I have WU only download and install "Important" updates.

I have a question about Microsoft driver updates. I was looking at what was available for my machine and saw the NVIDIA display update (7/28/03) and Creative update (6/26/02). They both apply to my machine. Can anyone tell me:

a: What exactly will they improve for me, and

b: Are they worth 14.3 MB of my dialup download time?

This is not life-or-death, but I'm curious because I could not find any links to more specific information on the additional functionality that they might give me.

I would appreciate any help.

A:Driver updates (MS)

The Nvidia update probably will be of no use unless you have a recent card (less than 6 mo old), it may even slow the card down. If you do have a recent card, it's almost always better to get the driver from the nvidia website rather than the microsoft signed one.

The creative update is probably worth the download as you may notice improved digital signal processing through the newer driver.

Hey, don't even know if this is the right place to put this, but I have a Compaq Presario SR1803WM with a 3.2ghz Celeron processor. and I was wondering if there is either af website or a program that will check my drivers and make sure they are up to date for free. I have tried several programs and they find that some of my drivers are out of date, but to update them, I have to pay for the program and register it.

A:Driver Updates

If the programs you've tried give you the names of the outdated drivers, you should be able to download them for free from DriverGuide or Driver Files.

This has happened on two Venue 10 tablets after the most recent group of "optional" updates. Rebooting after installation causes a Secure Boot error. The fix is to access the bios setup using a keyboard, turn off Secure Boot, reboot and go through the BitLocker recovery routine. The updates are KB3087137, KB3087041, KB3087390, KB3073874, KB2999226, KB3084905. KB3080042, KB3080800, KB3082353. I have no idea which cause the problem. Dell Support says that Secure Boot Off is supposed to be the default condition. Either one of these updates turned it On or it was always On and the update triggered the error.

A:Dell Venue 10 Win 8.1 updates cause Secure Boot Error

I have the same problem with a Dell Venue 8 Pro running Win 8.1. This had been working just fine and the only thing installed recently were the updates you mentioned. I tried doing a system restore to before the updates, but it didn't make any difference. Just get a red box saying Secure Boot Violation - Invalid Signature Detected. Turning Secure Boot off in the BIOS is a workaround, but because device encryption was enabled (it's enabled by default when you sign in with a Microsoft account) it then prompted for the BitLocker recovery key on every cold bootup. Entering a 48 digit key every time is a pain, so for now I have disabled encryption.

I think Dell are mistaken if they say Secure Boot Off is the default condition. It was definitely On already on mine.

I do notice the device boots up quite a bit quicker with the encryption disabled. I will probably just run it the way it is (secure boot and encryption disabled) but does anyone know how to fix this properly? Would a full reset from the recovery partition put things back?

After putting it off for a couple weeks, I finally did my Dell system update which was supposedly a Bios update.  Upon restarting, ALL of my files were wiped (except the ones in my recycle bin- go figure!). I have Carbonite so I am restoring everything but it takes a long time and is very frustrating.  I wanted to put this here as a warning to anyone.  How could this have happened and how can I prevent it in the future, besides not doing any updates?

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 7353 laptop yesterday afternoon. In the evening, I plugged it in, turned it on, answered the language/keyboard questions, accepted terms of use and then it started "installing critical updates". Well, it's been doing that for 13 HOURS now. The messages on the screen alternate between "Installing Critical Updates. Don't turn off your PC", "This might take a while. Don't turn off your PC", "We're still working. Don't turn off your PC" and "We'll let you know when we've finished. Don't turn off your PC."

How long should this actually take? This seems a bit extreme.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.

A:Dell computer occasionally stuck on Dell screen

I would run a memory tester
http://www.memtest.org/

Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

Howdy, new here and all so I'll cut to the point: I simply cannot find any updates more than 2 years old for my current graphics driver. I've had my computer since 2007 and the first couple years were great, as to be expected, and then slowly in this past year it's gotten ridiculous.

If I had to guess, I would assume many BSODs I get would be due to outdated drivers, regardless of the fact I never get the same message twice. I tried the Intel Update Utility and it gave me the following message:

Product Detected: Intel G33/G31
Current Driver Installed: 7.15.10.1666

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

However, I can't find anything from HP (latest update there is actually older than my current), AMI (regardless of being the computer manufacturer, there was nothing to even point me in some vague direction), or anywhere else for that matter.

I would hope that I can still find support for at least this one since it is likely the most important thing take care of before I can whittle away at some of the other drivers *most likely* being out of date.

But, if it means I need to buy a new graphics card to get different drivers, then so be it. Just don't have the money right now (an... Read more

hi all. i installed the uniblue driver scanner and after it scanned it said i have 14 drivers that are outdated. i dont know if you can update them free with this utility but it has the update driver option beside each one. my question is this, is it safe to go ahead and update these drivers or should i wiite the updates it says i need in this forum so someone can check them before i do something on my own. i am not very knowledgable about computers yet so i want some advice . is there another tool that i can use to check for driver updates where i can copy and paste into this forum for the techs to check first. i dont seee any way of copying and pasting the results of the uniblue scanner. thanks ahead of time for the guidence

A:Solved: driver updates

I think you will find that the most experienced folks here would not ever touch Uniblue driver scanner or any Uniblue product for that matter. A great running computer does not rely on having the 'latest' drivers, it means using what works. The only time I would update drivers is for a specific need/problem,, otherwise I stick to what works.

I just did a fresh install of XP pro, and the disc did not come with the drivers, I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to get the updates, besides the HP website, none of those updates seem to work. I mainly want to get the ethernet update so it can search the web on its own. Its an HP Compaq DC5100MT, with an Intel NIC that was installed because the built in NIC would not update. This can be removed if someone knows of an update for the factory installed NIC
