A: Fatal Error C0000043 applying update 578

Hi Alex,
Have you tried using a restore point ?  Next time you start it up, let it cycle through 'Windows Repair' until it gives up and says something like 'Repair failed'. You will then be given another screen which asks if you want to try other options, one of which is 'Use a restore point'. Click on this option and you will be taken to another screen which will list available restore points. Select one from a date before this problem started and click 'Restore'. Wait until it has finished - it may take a few minutes - and you will get either a message saying it worked, restart computer or a message saying the restore failed. If the former, restart and see if it is now working. If the latter, choose an earlier restore point and try again.
One word of warning. If, let's say, the restore point you used was six weeks old, you will then be faced with the task of re-installing any updates since then. If your computer is set to install updates automatically you may well finish  up at the same problem you have now !  I would suggest you change your update options, at least temporarily.
To do this, go 'Start / Control Panel / Windows Update' and in the top left hand corner of the screen you come to, you will see the line 'Change Settings'. Click on this, and on the screen that appears, in the top line use the drop-down arrow to choose the option 'Check for updates but let me choose . . .'. this means you will be notified when downloads are available, but it is your choice which downloads get installed. Install one or two at a time and re-boot after each install. Tedious, but at least you will know exactly which update caused the problem, if it re-occurs.
All of the above is worth trying, but I am not certain that a Windows update is the cause of your problem. Googling the problem suggest that 578 is an error code, not an update. Still if the above doesn't work, come back

Last night I downloaded the upgrades and before I went to sleep I ran the upgrade. This morning I woke up and my upgrade progress had froze (couldn't move mouse even) and I had to go to class. I would leave it run but last time I left my computer on for a while it nearly overheated, so I had to power off. Stupid. But I did anyway.

Anyway, the OS tried to update some system files that apparently weren't there, so it gets to this certain point and encounters a fatal error. I have tried all the options on the windows recovery disk. I have also tried some command line commands but none have worked so far.

Any ways to get around this? I have some songs I composed on the HD I really can't afford to lose along with pictures.

Can you get into the computer? If you can, you back up your songs and pictures to a CD/DVD or a USB drive.

I am having the following issue: "Fatal error C0000034 applying update operation 3 of 17085 (_00000...)" after a few moments I get another error ":( Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you. If you would like to know more, you can search online later for this error: 0xc0000135"
I have gone through all the options listed in various threads but have not had any luck. Here is what I have tried and the errors/messages displayed:
-Refresh your PC: There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made.
-Automatic Repair: Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC.
-System Restore (tried 3 different restore points): System Restore failed while copying the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during the System Restore. (0x8007050)
-Ran dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth but returned the following: Error: 50 DISM does not support servicing Windows PE with the /Online option
-Ran dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions but returned the following: Error: 87 The cleanup-image option is unknown
-moved c:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml to pending.old. Now I don't get the "applying update" error but after about 30 sec goes to ":( Your PC ran into a problem" error and reboots.
I have very many files/pictures/videos that I just cannot lose. I am at wits end and any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Make backups NOW of everything you can't lose! Use DVDs, external hard drives, thumb drives, whatever - just do it. Then we can talk about getting things fixed. It may not require a reformat and reload of everything but that would be the final step if nothing else works.

Hello All! I did search for this problem and I apologize if there is a post somewhere because I didn't find anything.

Upon attempting to update Java, I have received the following message:

I have Java 2, version 1.5.0. I ran the update when my Java icon appeared on my task bar telling me that an update was available. I downloaded the update but cannot install.

I had to install a malware remover after catching a trojan, which worked just fine, but when it asked me to restart the computer it will only start in recovery mode and stay stuck on the screen saying "Error C0000034 applying update operation 44 of 62501". If I press F8 when restarting all the options require me to log on as "adinistrator" (the spelling error worries me as well), and it will not accept the password. Have been unable to turn on the computer since without it either getting stuck or at the menus requiring "adinistrator" password. What should I do!

Ok, so on our computer downstairs, I installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. After it rebooted, on the Windows 7 loading screen it shows "Applying update operation XXXX of XXXX". After a certain number it says "Error applying operation XXXX of XXXX", and then the system proceeds to hang on that screen, meaning that I am unable to access Windows.

I try mashing F8 for my life when resetting the computer, but I never get a list of boot options, so I cannot get into Safe Mode or even try the computer's Last Known Good Configuration.

The edition of this version of Windows 7 is 64 bit Ultimate.

The laptop I am using is also 64 bit Ultimate. Another thing I want to point out is that both of these computers have been taking an INCREDIBLY long time (near 12 hours at this point) trying to download and install Service Pack 1. There is no spyware or anything running in the background. I am fearing that I might get the same error on this machine but I have taken the liberty of creating a System Restore point in the event it happens.

I have two other Windows 7 machines in the house (32 bit Professional and 64 bit Home Premium), and both of them installed Service Pack 1 without any kind of problem, and both of those computers installed them rather quickly.

A:Error Applying Update Operation after installing Service Pack 1

For anyone else having this problem, I think my problem was being caused by the language packs that you can get on Windows 7 Ultimate. After I reinstalled Windows on our family desktop I installed SP1 off the bat and it worked. On my laptop, I removed all of the language packs and attempted to install SP1, where it was successful.

Downloaded the SP1 Update today from Microsoft and immediately installed it on my work system without any issues besides the 1hr 20 min. it took to complete. 64bit OS AMD Quad Processor.

However, I installed it on my home system this evening, same 64bit OS but Intel quad processor and during the reboot process I got the the black win7 start up screen and below the logo it started showing files being updated and then froze with fatal error C0190001 file 498 of 97524 (bfsvc.exe)

Let it sit for another 40 minutes or so and figured it was never going to budge from that screen it froze on so I did a hard reboot. And then tried system restore and even then I got a exception error and message that restore failed. After trying another time with the same result upon the re-boot I was surprised that my system booted normally and when I got to my desktop there was a message saying system restored! Whew.

Not sure what went wrong and just may eventually go the route of a new install with SP1 rolled in already.

My home system is also unable to successfully install the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (KB2285068) update either.

" Fatal error C0000022 applying update operation 2 of 2430 (amd64_ava...) "

and then - black screen!
When I restart laptop it comes back to Windows 7 with a window saying:

In the middle of windows update, I'm getting a BSOD with VIDEO DXG_KRNL FATAL ERROR. After this, I have to hold the power button down to power off, and when I restart it says "Restoring your previous version of windows" and then I can go back into the computer.

Because of this I can't update windows at all.

I did some reading, but couldn't find much information. Some people seem to think that this is because of a faulty graphics driver installed by windows update. So, I manually updated my graphics drivers (intel as well as nvidia), and used WUSHOWHIDE.DIAGCAB to uncheck all other updates except "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home Single Language, version 1511, 10586". Repeated windows update, still same error.

Also, this is not the first time I'm getting this error. It happened last time there was a big windows update. But that time, I disabled only the intel driver from the list of updates, and it went through fine.

I have uploaded the zip file according to instructions. Can anyone help?

Since Microsoft says that not updated drivers can cause the power option not to put the machine in standby and thus lock it automatically , I have spent more than 2 days installing uninstalling asking trying etc. and concluded that the driver update Intel Management Engine Components/Interface Chipset is not being properly updated no matter what .
After checking and rechecking with my service tag and the dell system detect it is the only update that I have repeatedly concluded and still in the Control Panel it is the old version .

Found more threads that have the same subject but no answer that works for good , cause there is no intention to do this every week .
Bios is updated all other stuff are updated .

A:Intel MEI update not applying

Chipset, Graphics and other components on the laptop system board are always customized by Dell and are rarely ever updated, but if updated it must be Dell's update. Intel chipset drivers should not be installed on dell systems. On current win 8 models the incorrect drivers will be blocked since they are incompatible. Keep what you have and look for solutions elsewhere. MS warning doesn't apply.
Have you tried expanding the categories in Advanced Settings in Power Options? You can control many settings there.

When I shut down last night there were three updates being installed. The second one took over four minutes.

This morning I had :'Applying update operation 217 0f 217'
My box froze so, after some 15 minutes, I hit the hardware restart. I then had nearly two hours of fun and games. The Windows repair utility gave up and I finally found a restore point which worked. This was the restore point before the Windows updates had been applied so I suspect that, if I shut down now, I may hit the sqame problem. I have manually created a restore point that should take me back to this iteration. Hope so !

'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' doesn't have any 'COMPONENTS' so I've no idea where these updates are being applied

But I don't want to miss out on critical updates so has anyone had this problem and found a way through ?

And of course you have your win 7 dvd and a restore point. If you have those no problem. Otherwise try booting into safe mode (F8). If that doesnt work you can try a repair install from the win 7 dvd.

I have windows update set so it downloads updates but doesn't apply them automatically.

For the last couple of nights, there has been an update to apply when I log off. In both cases, the update seemed to hang and I left the computer switched on overnight with the monitor switched off.

On the first occasion it was still hung in the morning so I reset the computer. All seemed to be OK during the day but when I came to close down there was an update to apply. I guess it was the same one. It hung again and I left the computer overnight again. This time it had switched off but when I switched it on again it came up with a temporary profile.

A message appeared telling me to look in the event viewer but that is a waste of time as there are several hundred million entries which don't mean anything to me.

Where do I go from here? I guess I can do a system restore but that is likely to lead me back here after a day or two as the system tries to keep itself up to date.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

A:Windows 7 Home hangs while applying update

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

You haven't said which update it was, so I'll take a guess that it may have been SP1. It's never a good idea to switch your computer off while an update is being installed.

May I suggest you download and install the Windows 7 System Update Readiness Tool? It may help solve your problem. The link is for the 64-bit version.

A very strange thing happened today, first time I've seen this on my real or virtual machines. Luckily it happened to a VirtualBox vm for which I had several snapshots so I could revert to an earlier state and got everything back (VirtualBox vm snapshot = about the same as system image on real, physical computer).

Here's the problem description, I would like to know what happened and maybe also why this happened.

A Windows 7 Enterprise installed on VirtualBox 4.04 virtual machine, licensed and activated. A lot of software installed, used solely for testing purposes. Been up and running a few months without issues, all updates installed except SP1.

Today a normal boot produced this:

Attachment 151170

It took about a minute for Windows to run through "update operations" 1 through 92703.

After "Applying update operation" phase Windows rebooted, trying to configure some updates, finally stopping like this:

Attachment 151171

Again a reboot. Windows had totally reverted to a point after first boot. All installed software is gone, as well as installed updates and personalizations. It's just like after the first boot after installation some months ago, even showing the browser choice dialog:

Attachment 151172

As I mentioned, this is not an issue per se because I could use an earlier snapshot to put everything back, to revert Windows as it was yesterday. However, I really would like to learn what and why happened. I have never before seen a Windows instal... Read more

Hello Kari!

I shall post all that I can, however, it is far from the reason. It isn't really very solid at all, but it may be all you can get.

How sure are you that it is exactly at the point after first boot? What I mean by this is this (slightly below (restructured post subtly, read to end before attempting to answer )

Today a normal boot produced this:

That should only ever be caused by a Windows Update. Any chance that a Windows Update installed in the background last time before you shut down?

There is a bug which you might just be experiencing. Experts the world over argue about whether this is even possible. I have seen it with my own eyes; it happened on one of my own computers once. And I am not the only one. Many people have experienced and reported it, but to many experts it seems impossible. It is not impossible, it happened to me.

What happens is that the "Setting up account for first time use Window appears" when it shouldn't do. And it creates a whole new user profile of sorts.

You should be able to get System Restore to work from a full Win 7 DVD providing it's the same SP level, and the same edition as the current install.

So I was watching netflix and I got the warning that I had ~5 minutes to shut down the computer or it would shut down itself so that it could update itself. I got done closing things and shut it down by hitting the power button and holding it down.  Next I turned the laptop back on and it started to update so I zoned out of it and watched something on my phone. While doing so I noticed some type of an error updating message and did not touch is because last time this happened it just rebooted without the update. However instead it turned itself off and did not turn back on. I tried hitting the power buitton to turn it back on and that did not work. I also tried the suggestions I found on this support website such as taking out the battery pack and unplugging the AC adapter for the power source.

Hello Aw22,

Since a drive is the same as a folder, then you might see if doing step 3 in Option Two in METHOD TWO of the tutorial below in a elevated command prompt may work for you instead. You would just use the command below, but substitute the drive letter for the drive that you did this with instead.

attrib -r "C:\*.*" /S /D

Hi, mr.yoso.ko, and welcome to the forums.

The top 4 results in Google all point to threads created by you in various forums - so I am curios - why not contact Pinnacle and ask them what this means?

I have another user setup with standard settings and want to set them up to be able to play Civ IV without me the admin having to enter the password everytime they want to play it.

It's in C:\Games\Civ IV, so I've tried changing the permissions of users\ to modify and write enabled. However I get the 'error applying security' message with no prompts as to how to solve the probem!

Any help would be grateful.

The interesting thing is it applies the changes anyway, even though it tells me I'm not allowed - security flaw!

I was trying to write properties to some music files. I have done it before to the same file on vista, but forgot to save so im redoing it. When I attempt to save what I have just entered I get this:

"An unexpected error is keeping you from applying properties to the file. if you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.

Error 0x8007000D: the data is invalid.

I have all updates, and the files are good.
Any help would be great.

BTW I can write info to most file but some give me this error. They were all off the same backup hard drive, transfered at the same time and I have writen properties to these files before.

A:Error is keeping me from applying properties to files

I get this error as well when I try to edit metadata via the windows explorer toolbar. It only affects some (not all) songs, and the ones affected are missing all of their metadata. Strangely enough though, my music programs like winamp and songbird recognize all metadata for these files--the problem arises when I try to move these song files to my mp3 player, as it cannot find any artist or album information with which to organize the files.

As far as I know, all metadata was intact pre-windows 7.

Good day everyone,

I have searched the forum and failed to find an answer to my problem. I am currently having problems accessing one of my internal hard drives (not the one with Windows system files).

When I right click > Properties > Security > Edit
to edit the permissions of my drive X:\ I get the error noted in the image below. I'm not certain why im getting this error but it is absolutely frustrating. I run an SSD and I'd like to able to install certain programs on drive X:\ but since I do not seem to have full control, I am not able to.

I have tried using Take Ownership (which is described in [URL=" post[/URL] ) but I still get the error.

I have tried to run Windows Explorer as an Administrator, same results.

I believe I have covered the main troubleshooting steps that are suggested in this forum so if anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them

A:An error occurred while applying security information, $$PendingFiles

Does this have anything to do with your problem?

Sounds like that happens when ProgramData or Program Files got accidently moved.

Rename or delete $$PendingFiles, create a new $$PendingFiles on the partition that has ProgramData, and (assuming the new partition is d do

mklink -j c:\$$PendingFiles d:\$$pendingFiles

is that $$PrendingFiles folder hidden on the SSD? I've never seen that before so it must be something new with SSD's on how they store data. Hopefully it's not your partition!

Trying to install Windows 10. Uninstalled all components of HP Client Security Manager and thought I uninstall HP Client Security Manager as well. But it still appears on the programs list. When I try to uninstall it again, I get this error:  Error applying transforms.  verifiy the specified transform paths are valid. When attempting to install Windows 10 at this point, it indicates HP Protecttools needs to uninstalled (which I assume is HP Client Manager since that is what appears in the program listing .... in regedit, the two seem to be connected.) I don't know what transforms are and have no idea on how to proceed. I see something about changing the path for the transform in regedit, but I don't even find a transform and HP Client Security associated in the registry. When I try to use the Microsoft uninstall utility, it doesn't recognize that either Client Security Manager or Protecttools is installed (it is not on the list of applications presented) so I click Not Listed and it  asks me to provide Product Code for the software. I haven idea where to find that. Any advice is appreciated.

On one computer, the registry updates are shown under the Windows boot logo like "Applying update XXXXX of YYYYY" followed by the registry key. On another nothing is shown...

Am running Win XP Pro along with Office XP SP2. Just went to the Office XP update site and installed the Excel and Word 2002 Update Oct.16 2002, and the Outlook 2002 Update Jan 22 2002.

Word and Excel still work fine, but Outlook will only start in safe mode, hanging at the splash screen if started normally. I tried the trick of renaming the *.dat files noted in some of the bulletin boards, but tis did not help.

I then un-installed Office XP and reinstalled it to SP2 level without the three patches noted above. Outlook still refuses to start normally.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is a "patch to patch the patch" for this problem, but can't seem to find the article again. Have also unsuccessfully searched the web and am now truly stuck!

Since Office seems to have reinstalled itself with all it's old defaults, I assume that the un-install programme does not remove registry entries? Any idea if there is a manual un-install instruction set anywhere - I can't find it at Microsoft.....!

I've been trying to implement a macro to apply a defined chart format to every selected chart. I've been using a post from this forum a few years back to help, and it's working great for a single chart. However, I'd like to enable it to run across several selected charts at once, and that is giving me problems that I can't get my head around.

I'm trying to use this code to run through the objects in the selection:

Sub ReFormatSelectedCharts()

Dim ThisChartObj As ChartObject

Dim ThisType As String
ThisType = TypeName(Selection)

Select Case ThisType

Case "DrawingObjects"

For Each ThisChartObj In Selection

Call FormatThisChart(ThisChartObj)

Next ThisChartObj

However, it gives me a type mismatch when I try to use it. I've investigated by implementing the following code instead of the for each loop:

X = Selection.Count
ReDim arrCharts(1 To X)
For i = 1 To Selection.Count
arrCharts(i) = Selection(i).Name
Debug.Print arrCharts(i)
Next iClick to expand...

Interestingly, it seems that the second chart in the selection is being treated as a button by Excel - so in the debug output in the case with three charts I'll see something like:

Chart 10
Button 1
Chart 5Click to expand...

while for two charts it'll just be
Chart 10
Button 1Click to expand...

I've tried it with different pairs and sets of chart... Read more

I think rebooting could maybe make things worse, so I figured it would be better to ask for advice before attempting to reboot again, so I don't have the scanning information required.

I began to have problems with my computer this morning (June 29). Last night I had let windows install its updates, rebooted, and left the computer on overnight. When I got up the next morning, it had an error about win32.exe encountering an error and needing to close, one of those error report ones. The first time I didn't bother telling it to send. However, afterwards the taskbar disappeared and ctrl+alt+del didn't do anything. I had to reboot manually, and then it was fine for a while until having another win32 error report, which I sent, and after which my sound failed to work for certain things. My winamp had an error about missing something and wouldn't play, and a youtube video's sound wouldn't play. I didn't have to shut it down manually this time, and the shutdown sound worked. The sound worked again afterward, but I tried virus scanning with Avira and it stopped on svchost.exe.mdmp at 22.1%, and it only found a java/openconnect.l for a ?detection?. I tried getting the task manager, and when I tried ctrl+alt+del and clicked it, it not only didn't give me the task manager at all but it took my taskbar, and then nothing else would work when clicked. I rebooted again and tried running MalwareBytes, and then after a couple minutes the screen went black and then turned blue, and had this:... Read more

I have been battling a virus(es) on my desktop for the past couple weeks. Yesterday, I downloaded and ran Spybot in safe mode. It listed 7 problems and I chose "fix selected". Spybot fixed 5 of the 7 and then prompted me to reboot to fix the other 2. Admittedly, I was brain-faded so I didn't look closely at what file names or paths it was trying to fix. Since that particular reboot, I have not been able to load windows since; fyi, I am running XP Pro. When I powerup, the computer flashes the Windows XP logo and then ultimately gives me the following message (before prompting me for login info): Fatal System Error c00021a. windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down.

At this point, I'm not sure if I have a virus problem that has escalated, causing this fatal error, or a completely different problem. I'll give a bit of a background, since it may be relevent. I run Malware Antibyte scans and Advanced System Care (ASC) scans weekly to clean up any issues, but lately the problems would reappear just hours after running the scan. So, a couple of days ago, I downloaded Avast 5 and completed a scan. I also downloaded a freeware called Teamviewer at that time, although i don't think that is part of the problem, despite the timing. Yesterday morning, when booting up the computer in normal mode, I was unable to see any desktop icons or taskbar, I only could see... Read more

Hi everyone,
This morning I turned on my PC (Windows 7 x64) and I get this blue screen error STOP:c000021a [FATAL SYSTEM ERROR].
I can't even get passed the starting windows screen it just keeps on rebooting then getting blue screen again. I've tried safe mode and last known configuration point. Both just give me blue screen after the drivers are loaded. Haven't installed anything new recently so I don't know what the cause of this problem could be. I apparently have no system restore points even though Norton would make them every scan. I can get to command prompt and that is the only thing I can get to. Is there a way I can fix this through command prompt. I think I've attached the screen it gives me and that's all I know.

It said I had several drivers out of date so I selected all of them and left the machine to run while I ran some cleaning and maintenance programs in the background (Iobit Advanced System Care 7 and Privazer). I didn't think this was an issue because the laptop has more than enough power to run all those at the same time but the driver update got to 70% and hung there for 15 minutes. I figured something was screwy and that the computer would simply not install the fully updated drivers and so I closed all programs and rebooted the laptop to complete installation of the successfully downloaded drivers and now, now I have nothing.

By nothing, I mean just exactly that. I hit the power button, I see the cursor and hear the DVD drive spin up and that is it. No error codes, no choices for booting into Safe Mode, nothing. I'm not even sure it booted far enough for me to get into the BIOS! I've been poking around the net trying to find a program that will allow me to boot into a rescue disc and perhaps attempt to repair the MBR/ntloader but I am either not using the right keywords or I'm screwed because I can't find what I'm looking for. I found Paragon's Rescue Kit 14 but either I didn't follow the instructions correctly or my laptop isn't even searching for bootable media because it is too far gone.

I do have such a program as I am looking for but I recently moved and have absolutely no idea where that... Read more

The above forum has information on how to use Recovery Console & Windows XP CD to restore the OS. Caution, I recommend full backup to a 2nd disk. Caution, don't enter 'r' to the first decision point. Caution: next decision made should not reformat the partition. If you have the ability to clone the hard drive, then you have a spare should recovery be re-done.

Other posts recommend configuring computer to a minimum: the boot hard drive, cdrom, and 1 memory module (256MB is the minimum for XP). This is an easier first step before reloading anything.

Caution: oem restore bombs you back to out-of-the-box conditions. All data & applications are overwritten. This is different from above restore.

You did not indicate what significant changes occurred preceding the problem. Is the hard drive entering old age? Was the disk re-partitioned? Were applications closing/freezing in the days leading up to this?

Hey tech guy!

You helped us once before and we are hoping you can help us again. we have a dell computer and are using windows xp and recently when we signed on, our desk top disappeared and was replaced by a generic warning screen saying that our computer's security was at risk. it offered a link to scan our computer but we ignored that - fearing it would futher infect us and scanned our system using super antispyware. the first time it "removed" 139 threats and we have since ran the scan three or four more times. as of this morning we are still completely unable to navigate our computer. it is currently off line and i am using a lap top to contact you.

Although the trojan.fake drop threats have been temporaily removed we are getting BatCO and Adware/80 solutions surf assistant.

what - if anything can be done to clean our computer up!?!?!

Hi, welcome to TSF!

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please disable one or the other so they do not conflict.

Download combofix.exeSave it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

I apologise in advance for being a bit vague. This happened some months ago while I was abroad and a lot was going on at the time.
I was using an old computer running Windows XP when for no apparent reason I got a blue screen telling me of a fatal error and that the physical memory was being dumped, acounter showed the percentage being dumped and when 100% was reached the computer switched itself off. Amongst the various messages on this screen was one saying that if this was the first time I had seen the message to try restarting the computer.
I tried restarting and some time later the same thing happened again.
My problem:- where is the fatal error likely to be? Is it the operating system or is Windows simply responding to a hardware fault.
As I said this is an old computer and I wondered if a failing motherboard battery would cause this or perhaps a partial RAM failure.
I have another identical motherboard from which I can take all parts which might be needed or if it is the operating system I have all the necessary disks, I am hoping that someone out there can advise where to start as I still do not have much time available for trial and error methods

A:Fatal Error

When there is no idea what is causing the problem and time is short, one decisive method is to reinstall the OS and device drivers from scratch (or OEM partition or discs). If the problem goes away, it was software, if not, its almost certainly some hardware failure or conflict.

I think my Windows might be toast. I got some sort of virus and now none of my Windows icons (my computer, recycle bin....etc) opertae properly, I cannot open any folders, programs crash at startup. Icons have changed and system restore opens but to a blank white window. I cannot run a restore or anything. I am using Win XP home.

If this is reversible I would like to work through it. I do have an option of running an "out of the box" functionality restore which would save things I made with certain programs but not the programs themselves.

I can post a hijack this log later if it applies. Am I dead in the water or can you guys help me out? Thanks!

This one is something else!!! I cannot get my game "Zuma" to even start. I'll click on the desktop icon to start the game & I get this message: "Fatal Error, expecting levels tag". I restarted the system on Safe Mode with Networking & redownloaded the game & it worked fine...then, restarted the system normally & clicked on the same icon & got the same message. I disabled my firewall to see if that was the problem & got the same thing.

Hey my name is Erwin and I have a little problem with XP.

I recently bought a new laptop, a Dell Vostro 1720.
This laptop came with windows vista pre installed, but I'm not really fond of vista so I reformatted my partitions and installed windows XP instead (SP2).

However after Installing Xp some problems occured. Somethimes my laptop gave me a fatal error:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows SubSystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x75e91a76 0x00c7f5dc)
The system has been shut down.Click to expand...

I thought this had something to do with me not having all drivers installed. So I restarted installed all drivers and the problems seemed fixxed. after this I installed MCafee and Firefox and turned of my laptop.

This all happened yesterday, after having installed all drivers I got one more fatal system error however after restarting everything seemed fine.
Even today when I started up my laptop everything went smooth. I installed 7zip and after this I installed Photoshop CS4.

After the installation I tried to run photoshop and I got the fatal system error again. Now each time I startup my computer this error occurs a few seconds after starting up. I can start up in Safe mode normally.

I hope anyone can help me with this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome. I think there may be a couple of issues in the log, but as a general rule, that error is usually hardware related.
