Script (or other mechanism) to copy shortcut target to a new folder

Q: Script (or other mechanism) to copy shortcut target to a new folder

I am looking for a Windows 7 script (perhaps in vbs) or another mechanism that will copy the target of a shortcut to a new folder.
If the shortcut points to a single file, copy the file to the new folder
If the shortcut points to a folder, copy that folder to the new folder
Thank you.

I am looking to add a useful context menu feature to Win7 explorer. When one right-clicks a file or folder, a command to create a shortcut in a target folder, not just the currently opened folder. Something like the createshort++ in nirext but more updated.

Can anyone direct me to such a program or is there a programmer out there that can come up with a vbs script and reg file in a few minutes to accomplish this feature?

I want to add parameters to the script, such that only a new folder is targeted, instead of every folder in the drive.

The script is at post #4 here.

strFirstDrive = "E"
strLastDrive = "N"
strSavePath = "C:\Test\Index.docx"
Const ShowDoc = True
Const CloseDoc = True

Only 1 drive will be read, so I can change first + last drive accordingly:

strFirstDrive = "J"..................."J:\FolderName" maybe???
strLastDrive = "J"
strSavePath = "C:\Test\Index.docx"
Const ShowDoc = True
Const CloseDoc = True

Hi, I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 (fully updated) and trying to create either a manually run command line tool, or a bash script for later use. The objective is to go through my root music folder and copy all of the zunealbumart.jpg and / or zunecustomalbumart.jpg files and paste them into the same directory now named folder.jpg

So far I have gotten this command to get close, but it comes back telling me that "The system cannot find the file specified." Any ideas?
C:\Documents and Settings\insanity.FIDO\Desktop\Temp Music>for /R %d in ("c:\Documents and Settings\insanity.FIDO\Desktop\Temp Music\") do copy %dz*.jpg %d\folder.jpg
This is in a test directory, but I'll eventually be running it on an external hard drive in a similar directory tree.

Edit - oh, and I got that idea mostly from here:

I need to figure out a Windows 7 script to copy/archive files which are located in a specific folder. It needs to copy daily to an archive folder, with the script creating the archive folder as MM-DD-YY (being that day's date that is being archived) before it archives the files to that folder. The script will run at 9:00 pm every night, the time all work ceases.

If anyone could help me with this script, I would appreciate it.

I can't find the shortcut tab or the target on a game shortcut. What I'm specifically trying to do is add "-console" to the end of the target, but there's no shortcut tab or target. The only tabs that are there are just general, web document, security, details, and previous versions.
Also that information at the bottom is somewhat incorrect. I don't use Mcafee for anti-virus anymore. Now I use Norton 360.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

I don't want to insult your intelligence here, but is it actually a shortcut? What you describe is what I would expect to see for a normal file, the lack of a shortcut tab would indicate to me that it isn't actually a shortcut. Does it have a little arrow in the bottom left corner of the files icon?

I have installed a program called "Small Basic" on a Windows 8 workstation. I wanted to take a look in the program's installation directory to see if localization of the program's UI could be done easily, so I right click on the shortcut in the
taskbar and look at the properties only to realize that in Windows 8 shortcuts seems not to have a target location.

Now my question is:
In windows 8, how can I determine the target location of the shortcut?

Please note that I don't consider "take a look in 'Program Files' or ' Program Files (x86)'" for (good) answers of my question.

What I need to know is where to find the target path for this new kind windows 8 shortcuts in general. I guess the question applies to all the icons on the windows 8 start page too.

If I locate the "Small Basic" icon on the start page and choose "Open file location" it opens windows explorer in "C:\Users\[MyUserName]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Small Basic", and in this directory
there is a shortcut that do not have any target location in it's properties exactly like the shortcut in the taskbar.

A:Shortcut target

it sounds like you have encountered your first "Windows Installer Shortcut". This method of "advertising" shortcuts was introduced by MS well over 10 years ago. Some related information for you is here:
On Windows8, you will also find "Modern UI" applications. These are only really available via the Windows Store (small exceptions for enterprises who write their own), and these are very different again when you look into the underlying way these "tiles"
are presented.Don

If I remember correctly it's possible to make a shortcut to a file work on any computer, or in any location on my computer, by changing something in the shortcut target field, so it doesn't specifically target the whole address. Only I don't remember how it works...

I want it to work like this:
Main folder:
Contains shortcut to file in secondary folder.
Contains secondary folder with file that needs to be targeted by the shortcut.

A:Shortcut target question

Hello Milennin,

A shortcut is just a link to open what you have in the Target field. If you change the Target, you should also make sure that the Start in field is empty.

For other computers, you could use a variable in the target instead so that say it wouldn't matter what the drive letter or user name is. For example:Use %UserProfile% instead of "C:\Users\(user-name)".

Use %windir% instead of C:\Windows.

What path were you wanting to use?

However, on your computer, it would be easier to just create a new shortcut of the file instead, then pin or move the shortcut to where you like to use it at.

Hope this helps some for now,

I want to set Windows 7 Home Premium x64 to open PowerPoint files in PowerPoint Viewer rather than OpenOffice (the current default program), but I can't find the location of the PowerPoint Viewer program file.

With a user administratior account, when I open a properties window for the shortcut icon and and go to the Shortcut tab, in the Target box there is no path to the target file. The target is said to be simply, "Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (English)". Ditto for all other shortcuts to Microsoft Office programs.

Shortcuts for other programs however (e.g. Calculator, Paint, OpenOffice, etc.) all display a pathname in the target box.

Does anyone know how to create a folder that has a target in Windows XP? It has been done on some of our machines, but I am having trouble recreating it. The folder appears in the start menu and has an arrow next to it so you can mouse to the folder and the menu of links shows up next to it. This gives a cleaner look than putting a shortcut on the start menu.

A:folder with a target

there are two ways of doing this. first one is the easiest:

rightclick on the taskbar and choose Toolbars->New Toolbar. then choose the location that you want to be shown and click ok. the location you chose will show up as a new toolbar on the righthandside of the taskbar.

second way is a bit tedious:

goto: Documents and Settings->All Users->Start Menu->Programs. Then rightlick in the Programs folder and create a New Folder and rename it to which ever folder or location you want. then goto that location and select all folders and files in it. rightclick any one and choose Send to->Desktop. on the desktop you will find shortcuts to all these files and folders. cut and paste them in the folder that u made in the Programs folder. Now goto Start on the taskbar and look in Programs and you'll find the links.

I dont know which one you were asking for but i'd suggest the first one.

I'd like to specify a folder into which the desktop can back up instead. Can this be done, or am I going to have to pop for another Professional anytime upgrade?

Hi and welcome

Gut feeling. the folder that you want to put the backup isnt allowing the backup service to use it. who is the owner of the folder where you want to put it

to determine right click the folkder>properties? security>owner. The backup service may not run as your user but instead migh run as "trusted Installer". who ever RUNS the backup needs to be given permissions in the destination folder.

I want to move the My Documents onto a separate partition, which appears very straightforward in 7.

However, the first time I called the partition (as that was all it was going to be used for) 'My Documents' and just wanted to move the sub folders there.

Unfortunately, having moved the first item 'Desktop', the partition itself became 'Desktop' and behaved like that folder. The only way I could get it back was by creating other users and deleting the initial profile.

Subsequenty, every time I try to move 'My Documents', the folder selected is renamed by Windows to whatever folder I'm moving and the path afterwards reflects that, irrespective of my instruction.

i.e. I want to move 'My Documents' so create a folder called 'Information' (either before or during the move dialogue makes no difference. I confirm the notification to move files and receive confirmation of success.

Bizarrely, the new folder, previously 'Information', is now called 'My Documents'.

This is making me tear my hair out, so I would be grateful for a solution.

A:Moving my documents renames target folder itself!

There are hidden desktop.ini files in the Documents and Desktop folders which you're probably copying right along.
Those instruct Explorer to show your folder as "My Documents". Once you delete them, things will revert to their true names. You can find the files by turning on "Show hidden folders/files" in Folder Options.

I've searched this forum (and the web) and haven't found the answer to this problem. I have a relatively new (and clean) install of Windows 7 on several computers. I want to move the Public Videos folder to another disk. If I right-click on Public Videos in Windows Explorer and then Properties and bring up a Properties box, there are 6 tabs at the top. One is Location which *appears* (and the text describing the dialog implies) to be editable. On my computers - and in fact, all my Windows 7 computers - this target folder text box is not editable. In addition, there are no buttons such as "Move Target Folder" or anything like that displayed.

What am I missing? Does a registry key need to be changed to allow editing of the text box? I just want to change the Public Videos shell folder from "C:\Users\Public\Videos" to something like "D:\Users\Public\Videos".

Thanks in advance.

A:Moving Location of Shell Target Folder Uneditable

I changed the title of this thread because I now have more information on my problem. I can move the location of my personal user shell folders (Musci, Videos, Pictures, etc), but I can not move the Public user shell folders in a similar way. When I go to the Properties tab of my personal user shell folders, I have the "Restore Default", "Move", "Find Target" buttons. However, these buttons do not appear from the similar Location tab of the Public user shell folders - although the dialog on the tab implies you can change the target. Anyone know why or how I can move Public shell folders to another drive? Thanks once again.

Also, I don't know if this is related, but somtimes when I try to delete a folder, my system hangs on the 'Preparing to recycle...' dialog box.

Hi All

I had a question in ( here if you're interested, but no need to read in order to answer this question) in which I outlined my difficulties in having to daily reinstall my wireless broadband card.

It didn't surprise me much that no one had an answer - it is after all a card/network few of you would have encountered.

Anyway, I discovered that I could get by with simply deleting the "dial up" connection out of "Network Connections" and when I inserted my card a new one would be created (i.e. I didn't need to reinstall all the associated software).

That's a tolerable work-around, except for one thing: In order to operate VPN and also browse the net (essential to get my emails) I have to alter one of the default settings in the "dial up" connection each time it's created.

The path is:Right-click on the connection
Click on 'Networking' tab
Click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'
Click 'Properties' button
Click 'Advanced' button
Uncheck 'Use default gateway on remote network'
Click OK (three times)

Now, this is quite a hassle, as you can imagine. Can anyone suggest a way this value can be found and updated directly (in the registry?) Ideally, I'd like to end up with an icon that I can double-click to make the change.

A:Script or shortcut to change TCP/IP properties

I'm not sure how to do it in the registry, but if you want I could code a macro to do the job for you. All you'd need to do is double click on a program and it'd do all the work for you. However, this wouldn't be the simplest thing to program and it'd just mirror your mouse movements. You'd still need to wait for it to finish as if you did it yourself, but it would move a lot faster. This makes it more of a temporary work-around rather than a permanent solution.

I have posted this earlier as a followup question Shortcut to hide and unhide folders and files

It might be best if I start a new thread with this query.

I've created the script that I asked about there and works just as I want, but is there some way to run this script using a simple keyboard shortcut that I could set up , something like Ctrl+Alt+H

Have done a Google search and things I have been advised to try just do not work or are very complicated and involve a deep understanding of programming.

Again , if someone could point me in the right direction would be very pleased.

A:How to run a script using a simple keyboard shortcut

Create a regular shortcut for the file first (which has a little arrow on the bottom left of the icon) then on it make Right mouse click - Properties - Shortcut tab - click on the line Shortcut key - Press desired key combination - Apply.

hi there,

this is more of a general annoyance than any thing else, but none the less.. any support would be greatly appreciated...

currently, i have my iPod, Memory Pen, Audio Interface, MIDI Keyboard, MIDI Drum Controller And External Hard Drive all wired up to my USB hub and then that in turn into my laptop

the problem is, when i wish to take my laptop off of my desk, and therefore have to unplug my hub, i have to click "safely remove hardware" and go through the annoying process of removing each piece of hardware one at a time...

after a while of searching Google for an answer, i stumbled across something called "devcon"? and even a website offering a free download of a "devcon" script that says it removes all attached devices...problem is i couldn't get devcon to install!

so, can someone talk me through the process of installing devcon?

or perhaps there are other ways of achieving this?

in advance, many thanks!

P.S - some things you might want to know about my setup:

Windows XP SP3

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (access protection, buffer control and on access scanner are disabled when i try and install devcon - still no luck)

USB 2.0 ports,

and i have administrative access..

that's all i can think that might be relevant? if there's something else you feel you may need to know...please do not hesitate to contact me!

I bought myself a Logitech G930 wireless headset and it works great. Only problem is that when I want to use it I have to Control Panel > Sound > and 'Set as Default Device'

When I want to use my main speakers again I have to do the whole process again. Could I somehow make a shortcut, or a script that could do it automatically by just clicking on it? That way I could leave it on the desktop making it faster.

Or any other ideas?

The headset uses it's own drivers.

I want to copy/ paste this formula 5 rows down from where it starts, and then five rows again from that, and again, again, etc.

However, when I simply copy and paste, Excel tries to do the work for me by assuming I want all cell references to also move 5 rows down. Therefore, using above formula, where it references B31 it becomes B36; B30 becomes B35.

What I want is where it references column E to move down the appropriate 5 rows so that the new formula will reference E36 but where it references column B it only moves down one cell - so that B31 becomes B32, etc.

Any suggestions of how to do this without manipulating the formula after pasting every time?

A:Looking for Copy and Paste Excel Shortcut

Welcome to TSG!

No easy way to do it but this might be the easiest.
Copy and paste the formula down 5 rows as many times as needed, then move, not copy, the following cells:
B36-B40 to B31
B41-B45 to B32
B46-B50 to B33
and so on.

I'm new to this sort of thing so I hope I do this right!

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP3.

Recently, I noticed when I tried to move to/copy to from the Explorer window, my folder tree was blank in the little box that pops up. Regardless of whether I use the links to the left of the window or if I go into Edit - Copy To (or Move To), it happens with anything involving the explorer - documents, photos, etc. The only changes made recently was I had made an account on the computer for my kids, then deleted it not long after, without saving their folders (because they never used the account). Any other changes (installing programs, etc) happened after I noticed the blank box. It's not a major issue but it is slightly annoying.

Any ideas? And thank you ahead of time!

Sometimes I can just grab the folder that I copied from another machine and placed in My Videos and just

Windows 2003/2008 server event logs automation question.
Okay, I need help! This is my first post, and if I get an answer that resolves it, I swear that I will donate to the site! (okay, I will anyway, but what other motivation could I offer?)
Problem: I need to collect the system, application and security event logs
from multiple servers that I am testing often. Manually saving the logs and
resetting them is a chore for dozens of systems, each time i run a test.
What I would like is a VBS script that I could call from a shortcut on the
desktop, which points to a COLLECT.VBS script located on a mapped drive. This
would be to allow me to use 1 script on all systems. I could log in and run
it quickly or set it up on the scheduler to run daily.
The code below does the capture and clear of the logs, but i have had to edit one per server. I also have to create a different name or location each time to allow multiple captures to exist together and not overwrite each other.
So, here are the features that I would like some help with how to code a solution to my problem:
1. vbs script called from a desktop icon or tripped off by a daily scheduled
2. must copy then clear the system, security and application logs (code below
does do that, btw)
3. Pickup the system name and date stamp so as to write them on the x:
drive in a location that lets you easily see what they came from and where
they are.

I have a simple VBS login script for all my users that checks a location on our server and updates (by overwriting) the same files on the users' PCs if the server copy is newer (FSO.CopyFile etc). This has run swimmingly for several months now, but today I discovered it ISN'T overwriting the local files, but rather creates a copy of any replaced file, in the standard Win 7 format of Filename - Copy.ext.

Is this some Windows component with its Mom Switch set on high, trying to be helpful/protective? The problem it creates is this: some of the files the script updates are VBA add-ins containing a suite of Word macros; and if 2 files in the macro-supplying folder contain same-named macros, *neither* macro of the conflicting pair is available to the user.

This is a recent change -- that is, it?s not something that's been happening all along but only recently noticed.

Even stranger -- or perhaps this is a clue -- this *doesn't* happen on my home PC, which is identically equpped except for different AV programs (work=Comodo, home=Avast).

All PCs are Win 7 Pro 32-bit with Office 2010.

Any ideas? I know I could change the script to delete the to-be-updated files before overwriting, but that seems like surrendering to the vampire.

Perhaps, you could answer for XP specifically, or for Win7, and I would have a look if your solution works similarly in XP then.

I know you can assign individual icons to folders, instead of the default one, but I want to make groups, i.e. some folders red, some folders blue, etc., for hundreds of folders, so I want to do this by an AHK script, working on such groups; I know AHK but don't know anything about folder icons, except for the fact there are several, concurrent tools, both free and paid, but as said, I would like to work by scripting the things to do.

Now I started with the Folderico tool, and I saw that in each folder you reassign the icon of, it puts a desktop.ini, and the icon file:

desktop.ini with:

or with:

and then the icon files,

First discovery: Even when it was the very same icon, Folderico named the icon files differently, most of the time, but not in every case, and even, in some instances, it gave the same name "_0627" to different icons (in different folders of course).

Then I played around a bit with these .ini file... Read more

Firefox's popup blocker does not block all popups, although it does its best. The best way to block ads and the rest of the popups would be to use the Firefox AdBlock Plus extension.

Also, Java is not the same thing as Javascript. They are completely different, and I'm assuming you disabled JavaScript, not Java. However, you don't want to completely disable JavaScript because almost every modern website uses it in some way or another. AdBlock Plus should block the ads, but you can also use NoScript to block all JavaScript on a per-site basis.

So here's something weird.
On a firends computer, he has a folder on the desktop that appears to be a duplicate of the users folder in the Users folder. It shows it's on the desktop when you open the Computer icon and in your browse window it's there. You can select it and it opens up and it's exactly the same as the user folder of the same name.
If you right click it, you don't reaaqlly get anything. It doesn't have a shortcut display either.
If you look at the actual desktop, it's not there. Only in the browse window. I finally got fed up and just deleted it and it started deleting the same files in the user folder so I stopped.
I would like to get rid of it but I don't know how

A:desktop folder not really a shortcut

In the long distant days of MS-DOS, this would happen if folders of files got crosslinked. A directory would apparently contain itself and so on to infinity.

Now with the increasing use of hard links and junctions in NTFS This sort of problem is appearing again.

In the old days we would run chkdsk /f

Try running scandisk at next boot.

A:Rename shortcut for folder

Hi Wingman1800
Right click on the shortcut select properties and look at the security tab. Under your user name (for example Tom) check you have full control. If not select advaced and change the permissions to full control under you user name. That should fix it. If not get the Take Ownership from here:

A:All my folder became shortcut folders how do i undo them?

Sounds like a classic case of a virus or malware
More important than fixing the folders is to be sure you get rid of the virus
Scan with a good anti virus

Download and scan with malwarebytes

Sorry this is so general but my my friend tells me that the toolbar in this image is real but has no idea how to enable it. My question is this: is the toolbar real, and if so, how can it be enabled?

I thought it looked similar to the shortcut toolbar but dragging folders to the edge of the screen in Windows 7 wasn't working.

A:Enabling shortcut/folder toolbar.

I'd like to be able to change the location of the Desktop folder quickly. I like to set the Desktop to the folder of the project I'm currently working on.

How can I make a shortcut to the Desktop folder's Properties (Specifically the Location tab)?

A:shortcut to Desktop folder properties?

Do you mean folder options in control panel? If so, right click on it. There should be an option to create a shortcut. Doing so will create a shortcut on the desktop.

If I'm not understanding you, could you please clarify what you mean?

On my Win 7 X64 system there used to be an icon on the taskbar which opened up the User's Folder. (The one pointed to by the desktop item just below Libraries at the top left.)

This has disappeared and I am at a loss as to how to get it back again.

A:User's Folder shortcut on taskbar

Open an explorer window and right click it and select pin to taskbar if not already pinned.
Right click> right click Windows explorer> in the target box, enter

%windir%\explorer.exe /root,%userprofile%
This will open the users folder when clicked.

I've found the following unusual situation with an XP PC I'm trying to fix... I've been able to clean most of the damage done by the malware that infected it (safe mode disabled, etc.) but so far, I'm puzzled with this nameless icon that is fixed on the Startup Folder, that reappears no matter how many times I delete it:

When I actually try to delete it, it shows the name of the file as "" (???)

(Do you want to send "" to the Recicle Bin?")

Any idea of what is this?

A:Nameless shortcut on XP Startup folder

No idea, but maybe this will help
Right click the Icon, click Properties
If it's a shortcut, the Target: box on the Shortcut tab should show the location of the item it's meant to start. You can rename it on the General tab.
Click the Find Target... button, and it should open the folder containing the file that gets started so you can see what other files might be present..

I've removed the name from my Windows Messenger icon for the attached screenshot.

You may have to rename it before you can delete it. It may have to be done from the command prompt as well.

Hi!..Sandip Here.I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate Version.I want to add a program(Written by me) in Windows 7's start Up Folder.I do it through OS independent way. So I'll do it through Shell:Startup option. Please tell me why I'll add the shortcut of my program exe instead of the program itself. Is there any problem in adding the program exe itself? If so, what's the problem?

A:Start Up Folder - Adding Exe/shortcut

The only thing that comes to mind at the moment, is that a shortcut has properties (right click>Properties) that can be useful that the .exe does not have.

I have a user who wants a shortcut to a pulbic folder on the desktop. I have tried several methods and nothing seems to work. I am starting to wonder if this is even possible. The last thing I tried was creating a shortcut in outlook and dragging it to the desktop but it just would not copy. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I accidentally changed my user folder shortcut name in Windows Explorer under Desktop.

It was changed when I tried to save a file to the desktop and accidentally create new folder while highlight the user folder shortcut. It might be a bug in the system, since I can’t duplicate the change again.

I have tried to rename it but nothing happens.

I deleted it but it came back after refresh (F5).

There is no property available since this is a special folder or shortcut like network shortcut in Windows Explorer.

I briefly went through the registry and search for ‘shell’ related value but find none to resolve the issue. Did the search on Google and this forum, I have found nothing related to this problem. Maybe I use the wrong word for the search. Does anybody know how to reverse the change or edit in the registry? Thanks.

I am using Vista Home Basic came with IBM / Lenovo ThinkPad.

A:help with user folder shortcut name change

A lot of people would be interested if you could reproduce renaming the User folder. Interesting, but I cannot reproduce what you described either.

Normally the only way to change this is to create a new user account and delete the old one, or reinstall Vista.
