Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computer forum

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.

1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.

   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.

Edit:

Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft.

Task Manager reports a process (Mmr.exe) is using 90 plus percent of CPU usage time.
Mmr.exe starts at 2,000k of memory and grows to 50,000k
Mmr.exe causes the computer to run slow then freeze.
Ending this process decreases CPU usage rate to 10 percent with no instability.

Minutes after I end this process, it will pop back up in task manager and consume all the
CPU usage time.
What is Mmr.exe? how do i keep it from running??

Something has a hold of my computer and I don't know how to fix it. My computer runs slow and freezes. The only way I can unfreeze it is to shut off the power. I have the free edition of the superantispyware and avg which was recommended to me by your website and it has worked great, but neither one is working now. I get a microsoft message saying that it has encountered a problem with the program and will have to close now. I can't go to the tech guy website from my computer - it redirects me elsewhere. I also seem to have the Pro Antispyware 2009 in my add/remove folder and it won't let me remove it. When I try, I get the same above microsoft message. I did not see anything else in there that should not be there.

Since I can't go to your website on my computer I will have to put anything you help me with on a USB drive to download it to my computer. I have Windows XP on my computer.

Can someone help me fix this problem?

Get the trial of the Pro version at http://www.hdtune.com Install it and run it. Look on the Health tab for each of your hard disk drives. If the value in the Data column for (05) Reallocated sector count or (C5) Pending (yada) is not zero, that drive is failing and long, inexplicable pauses is one of the common symptoms. If that isn't it, have you tried CCleaner to dump the trash?

Hey All

i am hoping this forum is active, i am an IT pro so dont be afraid to bounce technical stuff off of me

I have a new HP 6000 PRO i just got about a week or so ago, right off the bat when i got it out of the box it was blue screening every 12 hours or so for no reason, so i reformatted it and installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bit in it, but it doesnt seem to run as snappy as it should, i am hesitant to install anything major in it until i know its running right, the BSOD is gone now and all the drivers are showing updated and the right versions, also the only real issue is a "pulse freezing" the best way to describe it is if im typing a message like this the words dont show up and the cursor stops blinking, when it comes back 30 seconds later or so the words i were typing come flying out on the screen, this happens if i click links as well as if i try to submit a form, the main complaint is coming from google chrome, however once when it froze i tried to open the start menu and noticed it wasnt responding either for that pulse moment

I do have a wireless keyboard and mouse but to my knowledge they are synced correctly and the batteries are all good

I come to you all in the hopes i might have missed something and i didnt get ripped off by buying this AIO, as of now this pc is not productive in the least and i wont install software on it till i get to the bottom of the pulsing which it just did again!

Hi,

For a few months now I've been having various problems with my computer and I'd appreciate it if someone could suggest how to fix them. Here are the main ones:

Computer is very slow to start up.
Once started clicking on items does nothing until I press Ctrl+Alt+Del and then cancel, then it works normally.
Computer frequently freezes, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes permanently so that a restart is necessary.
Computer occasionally restarts, especially if I'm burning a DVD.
Very few USB ports work; when I plug something into most of them nothing happens or I get a message saying the device is not recognized or has malfunctioned.
Device Manager reports an Unknown Device attached to a USB port, even when nothing is plugged in to any USB port.
The time in the corner of the screen is wrong when I first put my computer on in the morning, normally it says it's a couple of hours after a turned it off the night before.

Here are the components of my computer:
Processor - Intel Q8300 Core 2 Quad (2.50GHz/4M/1333/05A/Socket: 775)

Startup is very slow and after running the computer for just a short time it begins to freeze and slow down more and more until it just needs to be rebooted.

Because of my work schedule it may take me a little bit to reply once you get to this. I will monitor it from my phone but don't always have internet service as I have Sprint and they are HORRIBLE!!!! Anyway I hope you can help me.

My computer has been running slow for months just getting worse. I have to reboot to unfreeze it. 3 days ago I ran a scan with a free programs it said I had over 3000 problems. Late at night something flashes across my screen called preato so I went to add remove programs but when it came up I waited for it to load the programs but it never did it stayed blank. I used an old program I love called go back by Norton and then it showed the programs but the preato did not come up. Trying to get the info you ask us to get before contacting you my computer rebooted itself 3 times and I had to reboot it 4 times myself. i tried to get the gmer report but it ran for 30 mins and shut down the computer then when i brought it back up i cannot get it to run again it freezes up and i have to reboot. Please help me I am disabled and have not left my house since Katrina in 2005 so this is my only contact with people and I cannot afford to buy a new one. Thanks in advance…Dianne Brown

Hi all.
My problem is that when my computer starts windows explorer freezes and my background turns white. I have to manually close explorer through task manager, by deleting the process, and then starting explorer again. In the first few minutes when started, my computer is acting really slow.

I am unable to do system restore to an earlier point (it says an error happened and it was unsuccessful). I have run kaspersky to delete virus, but that didn't help. I recently installed a program called SpeedFan. I uninstalled that, but it didn't solve the problem.

I'm running out of ideas on what to do, to fix this problem. I would like to avoid a full system recovery..

Is this a problem seen before? Could anyone help ?

I recently updated to INternet Explorer 7 but even before that my internet browser is running really slow. Whenever I type anything within the browser, or if I am typing in another program while internet explorer is on, the letters will take a while before showing up. Sometimes the homepage will freeze and I have to end the program and start it again just to repeat the process again and again. Everything else in my computer is running fast except when I click on the web browser and the computer slows down.
This is my work computer by the way. OS is XP, processor pentium4 2.39 ghz, 512mb ram, 40gb hard drive. 24 gb free.

thanks

Hello! I'm having serious issues with my computer. It takes a long time to load upon starting, takes a long time to get to my destination, when it gets on the page it freezes and a message appears saying, (Not Responding).

A windows message then pops up saying, "You've chosen to end a program that's not responding. If you end now, you'll lose all unsaved work." I can either chose "End now or cancel". If I cancel, the page doesn't unfreeze.

I know it can be either a software conflict or malware, but I don't know which one. I've already recently ran a performance booster on it, and that really didn't do much that I can see. I've defragged too. I ran a registry cleaner on it. I cleared the caches. It hasn't changed a thing.

There's one other user on my computer who's downloaded some various programs. I know he doesn't check on the software before downloading. HELP!!

I was going to choose a free software to tell me if I have software issues or hardware issues, but I don't know which ones are the best and less harmful for my computer. Also, I haven't tried a malware removal either. I'm afraid to download anything and ONLY trust Techspot to tell me which ones to download.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.
Chassa

I have a client with a tricked out Dell xps Studio (6GB memory) who is suffering with very long times to print. Even sending a printer test page from within windows (Vista home premium 64) takes about 30 seconds before the sent notice appears on the screen. The printer is a Epson Stylus Photo1900 (large format printer). No other programs running but background stuff kept to a minimum. I have tried shutting down the spooler and printing direct, but it is slow as well.

I loaded and ran Process Explorer from Sysinternals and the only thing out of the ordinary is the constant opening, running and ending of dllhost.exe. This occurs every few seconds and lasts only for a few seconds.

I know there are discussions in posts elsewhere in the forums of the possible impostor DLLHOST.EXE, and when I left the client's I had set MS Security Essentials to run a full scan to see if it would find anything, but I have not yet been to see the results.

Does anyone else have any ideas on this?

I am working on a friend's computer that has multiple infections. The computer is a Dell Dimension E520 running Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP3, with 2GB of RAM. I started by running SuperAntiSpyware which found and cleaned 2021 threats. I then took her computer, removed the hard disk and scanned it on my computer using MS Security Essentials and SpyBot Search and Destroy, both of which found and removed additional infections. I have backed up all her personal data from the "My Documents" folders for each user onto an external hard drive and am prepared to to a system restore to get rid of all the problems in the event that I can't clean out the infections and get it running well again. An additional run of SAS found and cleaned another 55 threats, including two trojans and numerous spyware and adware threats. I have been trying to sort through and remove various games and other programs which have not been used in 2+ years. Several toolbars would not be removed by Windows Add/remove Programs so I downloaded and ran Revo, which succeeded in removing the toolbars that it found. On booting up I get the message that an error has occurred in Microsoft Security Client and to try to open it again or reinstall it, neither of which has been successful. There is another problem in that Firefox does not respond to searches or URLs, and IE exhibited erratic behavior when run. When FireFox is launched I get the alert stating that the application's... For the last 4 months or so, my computer has been running perfectly except for one problem. When it is powered off, it doesn't boot again. Time and time again I reset the CMOS using the jumpers and most times it boots after maybe 15 tries. Lately, it hasn't been working and no matter what I can't get it to boot anymore. The following codes are displayed on the motherboard's LED screen

C1: Detect memory
C0: Early chipset initialization
03: Initial Superio_Early_Init switch

I have tried running with just one memory module and switching channels as well as re-inserting every single component of the computer. I have a feeling it has something to do with the BIOS and more to do with the second two errors. Everything seems to be fine besides the fans slowing down to boot and nothing shows up on the monitor.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
My computer has been running slow, especially when I do a restart, it takes forever to restart. I went into msconfig and disabled what is in startup. Question is what do I need in startup and what can I get rid of? and how do I remove something from startup?
Also what is a good free firewall to use?
Thanks Dano

A:Computer runs faster when I disable what runs in the background?

Here is a good explanation: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
There are certain (and important) items that should run at Startup.

If you are unsure of some of the entries you see listed, this is a great website to research them: http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
It tells you what the process is, and if it's necessary to run at Startup.

A good firewall (and free one) is Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

I'm having some serious problems. When my computer starts, the BIOS screen freezes on the third line. It shows the BIOS title: Phoenix AwardBIOS v6.00PG and all the copyright info. The first line says: Main Processor Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz (200x15.0). The next line says: Memory Testing 1048576K. Then on the third line it gets to: CPU Bra ...and then freezes. At the bottom it says I can hit DEL to get into the setup. If I let it sit for about five minutes or so then it'll load the rest of the screen. And if I've hit DEL then I can get into the setup screen. But I have no idea what I'm doing in there. The BIOS will then load into another screen and then goes black and sits frozen. At one point the first screen froze and gave me an error where it said "CPU is unworkable or has been changed." and said something about going into the setup and changing the CPU Soft something. I went into the Setup and didn't know what to do. So I did the default settings, saved and exit. I can still get into the setup, but that's about it.

I have no idea what's happened. I got a virus about a week ago, and thought I'd gotten rid of it. Then I found it again yesterday, and cleaned everything up. And thought it was all okay. But then this morning I get this BIOS freezing problem.

Previous to all that, I'd gotten a new video card about a week ago, and it was too much for my power supply. That kinda blew out and I had to replace it with a bit ... Read more

Hi!

I've had this problem for a couple of days now, and I've ran out of ideas. I really hope one of you fine people can help me out!

Background:

Please note that this section probably isnt related at all: Not too long ago (just about a week after I formated my computer for the first time in about 3 years), my computer started running INCREDIBLY slow. Just opening a folder could take over a minute. Eventually I ran it in safe mode, everything was completely fine. I then checked all the processes running, and as it turned out, Avast antivirus was not running in safe mode, but was running when i started windows normally. Sure enough, even though it didn't seem to take up a lot of recourses, Avast alone had lagged my computer down to an unusable standard. This was solved around a week ago. It probably has nothing to do with this problem but I thought I'd include it anyway.

Now to my new problem. My computer started running slowly from time to time, occassionally freezing completely for about 10 seconds and then going back to normal. This all started about a week ago, and has gotten gradually worse. At first it would, as I noted, happen from time to time. I for example uninstalled Origin which used had an update, and normally uses a lot of recourses, and everything worked fine. I thought I had solved it, but sure enough it came back eventually. So far I've uninstalled more or less all programs that were installed close to the first symptoms,... Read more

After repeatedly trying to get it to start up, it finally creeped and here I am. Things seem to run fine, just in slow-mo. Here is my report. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Hello,
This is my first time to post here. My laptop often runs slow, pauses, has trouble switching from one thing to another, and sometimes completely freezes.

We have 2 profiles on the laptop (one for me, one for my husband). Sometimes when switching from one profile to the other, the system completely freezes and after waiting a long time with no response, we end up having to shut down manually (hold down power button). This sometimes happens when trying to Shut Down the system also - it just won't do it, so we have to do a Hard Shut Down. I hate doing it, but there seems to be no other choice.

I have run Malwarebytes and Spybot Search & Destroy, but they found nothing. Please let me know if you can see anything from my log and attachments. If you need other information, please let me know and I'll provide it.

Thanks!

My Dell Inspiron 1505 has become slow, and often freezes especially while using Facebook. I recently did a defrag after moving a large amount of itunes files over to an eternal drive but this did not help any. I've included the HijackThis, System Info, Uninstall, and Startup logs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I downloaded 4 video game demos from gameplanet and saved them to a file in My Documents (windows XP) into a sub folder I created...I then scanned these four files with McAfee...All was okay..whenj I beganj to extract my system started to become unresponsive..I re-booted and tried again...same thing...I deleted the 4 files I downloaded and emptied the recycle bin and re-booted...Windows XP is still running sluggish...I ran AdWare 6.0 with the latest update w/ no problems...restored Windows to a previous date (yesterday) and the computer is still running sluggish...very sluggish. I ran HIJackThis and have included a copy in this thread. I am going to step out and let McAfee do a full scan with the latest update...It would be greatly appreciated if someone could PLEASE take a look at my HiJackThis log.

Sorry I messed up on my first posts. I didn't attach the files you required.

Problem:

Computer froze up, had to just turn it off and then back on. When turned back on Windows would not initiate. Another screen came up saying it would attempt to automatically fix the problem. After about 30 minutes another screen came up saying it couldn't automatically fix the problem.

Had to go out of town for a week, when I got back I turned the pc back on and it loaded windows fine! Problem was it ran really slow and froze up again. When I restarted again it brought up safe mode startup options which worked.

I was able to then restart windows normally. At this point I did select the restore option from the start menu. I chose the most recent restore date possible which seemed to help for awhile. Unfortunately the computer is back to slow operating and keeps showing the error message 'AMD RAIDXPERT" Task 20 timeout on disk port 1"

My system is a Vista home premium 2007 sp1.

Any help greatly apprecitated

Below is the DDR file

** THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED, SEE SOLUTION AT THE BOTTOM...THANKS AGAIN! **

Hello all,

First time poster here, having some problems with my Windows 7 install. Ever since this evening, about 15 minutes into my Windows 7 session, I notice that it starts running slower (mostly in any web browsers I'm running). Then, one by one, it seems as if systems just stop. First, I can't load any web pages. Then, my wallpaper rotator stops. Then, I can't close windows or it takes minutes to close a window. Then, I can't open any programs. Finally, it gets to the point where I can't shut it down. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I have tried doing so from the Start Menu (which shows up, but may freeze itself) and from the command line, and it's as if the OS doesn't care. I have to do a hard reboot, after which twice it's run a CHKDSK and found orphaned files and other errors. (I've had to do this at least 8 times tonight.)

Here is my system information:
HP Pavillion dv7-1127cl laptop (17")
320 GB HD, split into three partitions (~220 GB for Windows 7, 10 GB for extra space, and 60 GB for a Ubunto install I completed Tuesday)
Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-72 2.10 GHz
Ram: 4 GB
It originally had Vista on it (it was purchased in December 2008), but I installed 7 on the 220 GB partition a week ago. Vista worked fine until about July 2009, when it started going slow and becoming unstable. That's when I split off the 60 GB partition for a Win ... Read more

I would make a virus scan my top priority

I would also try disabling all third party apps and services to see if add on software is giving you the problem. In MSconfig uncheck all items under startup and in services tab tick hide all MS services then uncheck the rest.
This should give you some idea whether problem lies within windows or 3rd party software

The SFC scan will also help give you an idea of whats going on

Dell Dimension E510 running Windows XP (service pack 3).

I bought this desktop computer about a week ago off of Craigslist. I was running late that day so I didnt get to ask much more than I already stated. When I used it the first week it was slow but tolerable. As the days passed the speed slowed even more to programs not even responding. I also would like to erase all the user information and settings so I can start new with a decent working PC. My knowledge in computer software and program procedures etc. Just let me know if you need more specific information.

A:Windows XP runs slow...if it runs at all!

If you bought that Dell Dimension E510 desktop from Craig's List and it still contains all the programs and "debris" and issues from its previous owner, you need to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP SP3 and get a fresh start with it.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on one of the stickers?

What's the complete version of Windows XP that's on the Microsoft Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker that has the product key?

Were you given any discs with that desktop?

Computer sometimes runs slow & often freezes when watching youtube or other video sites.

4. Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred
Replaced a noisy heat sink and fan months ago with a used one purchased through Ebay, but didn't experience the running slow until now.

Additional information: I did a memory test and HD test, they both passed. I have 2 HD and they both are affected by this glitch "youtube" glitch. Except on one of the HD, I can hardly do anything because it goes so slow. Seriously opening up a folder takes almost a complete minute. I also tested my CPU - results follow:

Hey, new to this forum so please go easy on me!!

MY HP550 has recently started to freeze and run slowly when myself or the wife try and brouse the internet or do some work on it. It's really doing my nut in and i've followed some of the instructions on this thread here and found it pretty useful, i am however looking to see if there is anything specific for me to do with my laptop.

Would this be a a problem with the laptop or just a problem between the keyboard and seat?

I've downloaded SUPERAntispyware and have ran a scan on it and Malwarebytes, both have found and removed threats with Malwarebytes finding a trojan. All threats have been removed.

I also have PCtools antivirus, Threatfire and Microsoft Security System (all free) as well as the above mentioned programmes. Is there any need for me to have all these security systems in place or would it be better to remove some of them?

I haven't downloaded the HijackThis programme, should i download and run it?

Many thanks in advance for your help folks, i'll really appreciate it.

Cheers,

BE1

You guys have been very helpful in the past so I thought I'd come to you preventatively this time. My Dell laptop is five years old and I won't be able to purchase a new one for another year or two. As far as I know, I don't have any major virus or problems, but gradually my computer has become very slow, and sometimes it freezes. Loading photos on Facebook is a common situation it freezes in, but it happens with other things too. It also starts up very slow, and it can take awhile for windows to open.

So far I have tried a number of fixes: System Restore, defragmenting, freeing up space on the hard drive, rearranging items on hard disk, deleting programs I know I don't use, scanning and removing spyware/viruses with Kaspersky/Spybot Search & Destroy/Ewido Anti-Malware/Spyware Blaster, and deleting temp files as suggested by a similar thread in this forum. I deleted Temp files from these locations:

Hi there wondered if some one could help.
My pc keeps freezing- it happens very irregular sometimes it happens after 5 mins after turn on then others it can run all day and then crash.
I have tried taking sides off case and blowing a fan in there but to no avail i wondered if it could be my power unit what do u think?
ANY HELP MUCH APPRECIATED.

A:Computer Runs Then Freezes

there could be several causes. the first thing to check would be the ram. run memtest ont he ram. it could also be damaged or missing system files. if you are running XP and have an XP Cd you can run system file checker. put the XP Cd in the drive and open a command prompt and type sfc /scannow then press enter this will run system file checker and replace any damaged or missing system files.

if you need more assistence you need to tell us about your hardware set up. ie; motherboard, CPU, ram, video, what version of windows, and what power supply and wattage.

Hello there, I have recently put in a new power supply and heat sink in my gaming computer but has been running hot and parts of windows freezes up at times I can't get into anything unless I shut the computer down for awhile to cool off.

I did manage to run SpyBot search and destroy in safe mode just to clear a couple trojans just to get by so I no longer have freezing problem so otherwise I wouldn't be able to run all the required scans needed to attach the logs below.

Only problem was MGLOGS was the Process Dll scan did not go through everything else did.

Please look over my logs and see what malware is bogging down my computer

A:Computer Freezes Up And Runs Hot

Rerun Hitman and have it remove all that it found. Do the same with RogueKiller.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista,Seven,Eight or 10, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 and 10 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
Click on the Scan button.
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
Attach the logfile to your next reply.
A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
Now reboot and rescan with both RogueKiller and Hit... Read more

Hello! Aside from my introduction, this is my first post. I have a Dell Inspiron E1505, running Windows Vista home premium SP2 (32-bit) that has been running slow intermittently; sometimes it's fine, sometimes the windows load slowly, programs like Word take a long time to start and are a drag to operate, even while composing this message my text will freeze and I have to wait for what I've typed to show up on the screen, and finally at times my whole computer freezes, even the mouse pointer, then after a while it will unfreeze. Also, more than once while trying to watch a video online it will freeze and play a loud, repetitive noise from whatever part it was on when it froze and I end up manually shutting it off or even unplugging the laptop. Now, I noticed while searching for my system information that I'm only running on 1 GB of RAM, but I also think there is something wrong with my computer, like Malware, although I realize I could be overreacting.
I have gone on Microsoft's website to see how I could make Vista run faster, and consequently uninstalled all programs that I did not recognize or use anymore, (except for the ones that came with the Computer and seemed important) I regularly defrag and use the disk cleanup. I have my IE set to clear my history after every browsing session, and I have unticked many of the animations for Vista, (i.e. aero, transparent windows, animations while opening/closing windows) and fina... Hi, I have a Dell Precision 470, which is a fast, and quite unstable computer. I use Windows XP SP3

Over the 15 months i've been using this computer, i came to notice it blue screens... maybe once every other month or so. but recently, it bluescreened, and instead of nothing bad happening, I noticed I can't delete files.

So basically

-when running explorer, it takes forever to load. Sometimes it'll just start not responding and I'll have to close explorer.exe via task manager
-All other programs run fine. Firefox, iTunes, Opera, Word all run fine. However, once you start looking for files (to upload to youtube etc), it slows down dramatically
-Spy Sweeper shows no sign of virus/spyware
-Windows XP takes forever to load, both loading the welcome screen after the splash screen, and loading the desktop after logging into my side. It no longer just shows the display picture though
-I probably have the XP CD somewhere, but it will be extremely difficult to find and I hear you lose all your data, so i would be better off getting a new computer

Thanks - Shadow

A:Solved: Windows explorer runs extremely slow or freezes

You have an infected computer my friend. http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

Install that(hopefully you're able to) and if successful, update definitions if it doesn't do it automatically and do a scan on it.

More than likely it sounds like your reg files are screwed, so may I suggest a backup of files and drivers; reformat.

OR

If you have a retail copy of the current version of windows you are using, go ahead and boot off the disc and get to the recovery console.

Once in command prompt, do a fixboot, then chkdsk /r function.

PS

Definitely get AVG, it's the best freeware anti virus software out there known to man of this current moment.

AND

Definitely do a scan with it!

Hope this helps!

I get the message "Windows cannot start successfully - seconds until Windows starts". I can use the system but it's very difficult to boot up and I do not know when it'll freeze.

Thank you,

A:My computer freezes up, fan sometimes runs very loudly

Hello Kirbycc,

Does the fan sound normal or is there something extra?
You seem to have few replies on TechSupport, but I would start with cleaning/dusting.
Heat can explain all your problem and often the reason is the dust. It is also possible that there is something wrong with your fan too...

Hi,

I noticed some recent problems with Firefox. At first, I noticed that frequently, when clicking on a search result in google, it could take 3-45 seconds to load a page. It would occasionally return "oops, couldn't find". Upon retrying the link it would briefly state something about "redirecting". It would occasionally open the page in a kind of basic html, with no images. All this before (after several clicks) finally loading the page in question. Next, I noticed that with many copies of firefox running, it would slow down and eventually freeze. Next, I noticed that after having a few copies open for a long time, it freezes for 1 second at 1 minute intervals.
Does this sound like something in particular?
Help,

Ben

A:firefox is slow, can't find sites, runs hours after shutdown, freezes

Sounds like a good reason to do two things:

a. Uninstall firefox, then reinstall.

b. Use another browser, as a point of comparison.

My computer runs very slow when browsing the internet and randomly freezes.

I have been having trouble on a 2 month old computer that ran fine initially. It seems to freeze in internet explorer and I couldn't use google at all yesterday unless I restarted. I had Norton security on the computer but explorer indicated I needed to update it as it was causing a conflict. I decided to uninstall it and instead installed AVG 8 and Zone Alarm. I have been searching for real estate on several sites and may have picked up something. Don't use any P2P software. Need you help please.

Hello renee Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. A:Computer Runs Slow + LOP

Yep...that's LOP all right...let's do this, before even tackling the infection, to ID any hidden jobs and folders.

Download fl.zip
Extract the contents to a new folder on Desktop.
Within the folder, locate & double-click fl.bat.
It should produce a report at c:\findlop.txt. Post the contents of the report in your next reply

Hi ront162aol,
Let's find out why.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run the Farbar Scan Tool

Download FRST64 and save to your Desktop.

Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
FRST64 will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press the Scan button.
When finished scanning, 2 logs will open on your Desktop, FRST.txt and Addition.txt
Please post them in your next reply.

If you lose track of them, they will be saved in the same location as FRST64.exe

It takes up to 15 minutes to start up when you first turn it on. Often takes up to 20 seconds for programs to come up when you hit start. Virtually all software programs take time to come up, even little ones like Notepad. Have lots of slowdowns and freeze ups when using the internet, including trying to type in url's. Anytime the computer isn't in use for a little while, starting up again is always very slow with frequent little freeze ups. Lately, even when we first turn the computer on, we get a low on virtual memory warning in the lower right corner. Somebody told me this could be the problem. If so, why would it need more memory now than in the past when it worked ok? We actually deleted lots of files and some software programs not be used, including video games.

We used Spybot, Malwarebytes and our anti virus program a few days back and all 3 came up with no problems.

Thanks.

Hey guys. I am on my friends Dell Dimension 3000. Not the top of the line computer as I'm sure you know, but it used to run good enough for her. However, now it runs incredibly slow. She hasn't installed a ton of programs on it, and she has virus software, runs ad-aware occassionally, I defraged it using Perfect Disk 8, and ran through the various features of WinASO. My friend bought his computer 3 to 4 years ago and it's running slow when he runs this game called Soldier Front. His internet is Charter (http://www.charter.com/Visitors/Home.aspx). He says it runs fast when he's out of game, to like check email addreses, and go on the web. Here is some information I took from his System Properties.

Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
Dell Dimension DM 051 Intel (R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00 Ghz
2.99 Ghz, 512 RAM
Physical Address Extention

Soldier Front System Requirements

Your computer must meet certain minimum requirements in order
to play Soldier Front.
Before you download and install Soldier Front, please verify your system specifications.meet or exceed the following.
Minimum Requirements Recommended Requirements
OS Windows XP
CPU Pentium III 833MHz Pentium III 1.2 GHz
Graphics Card GeForce3 64MB GeForce4 128MB
DirectX DirectX 9.0b
RAM 256MB 512MB
Browser 5.5 or higher
Local Disk Drive You must have a partitioned local disk drive named C:\

A:Computer runs slow.

Firstly, i would suggest running ccleaner to clean up any files which might be slowing down the computer.

To me, 512mb doesn't sound like much for gaming. I would have said 1GB for worthwhile play. The minimum requirements are usually just high enough to run the game, let alone play it well.

If its an internet issues, the firewall can often block certain games from playing effectively. Try disabling it for a small amount of time and playing the game to see if it works.

Also, what graphics card is he using?

i have a bizzare problem...this computer i have runs slow sometimes...most of the time it runs fine and occasionally it will slow down....the sound becomes a little crackly when playing anything with audio, and games become really slow as well as when i try minimizing a window...this computer is quite a fast computer...i have a 2.66GHz intel core 2 duo with a P5ske motherboard and 2gb(7200rpm) ram...it also has a nvidia geforce 8600gt...bt after a few hours or the next day the computer is back to normal and it runs fine...does any one know what the problem is?? thank you

A:Computer runs slow sometimes

hello ,

now what i need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now go to the (event veiwer) this is thru the (administrator tools) in the control panel
here you will find 3 to 4 subcatagories

you will want to check each of them for this is where windows keeps track of all errors
now you will want to make notes of the errors that have been recorded ( you do not have to make notes of double entries just of the dates of their happenings & how many there is)
you will get more information on the errors if you (right) click them / then select properties

also

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...p2-bootcd.html

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

Hi
My laptop has all of a sudden become incredibly slow. I did not install or remove any soft- or hardware before this, it just happened. I have since cleaned the registry, defrag'd, ran SuperAntiSpyware, did and undid several system restores, and updated Firefox. I restarted the computer in "safe mode" several times. I even tried to disable all but the essentials in the startup window of the System Configuration Utility and disabled/re-enabled everything under the "services" tab. On a previous computer I had a problem with restore points keeping bad information, so I decided to delete all restore points when there was no improvement after going back over a month for a clean running machine. I'm at a loss as to what to try next. I hpe you have some suggestions. The HT log is attached. Thanks!

I am not sure what all information you will need. My computer runs super slow and freezes up while using the internet. I ran accross this website while trying to figure out how I might be able to fix things on my own. Below is my hijack this log and I will answer, to the best of my knowlege any questions you will have. I have downloaded superantispyware, malware bytes and hijack this after reading many posts on here. I previously had internet antivirus through at&t yahoo. I just bought Norton 2010 about 1 month ago.

Thanks so much,
Stacy

Randomly, about 2-3 weeks ago my computer began to run slowly. If I'm just browsing the internet or using word documents and things like that it is fine and I cannot tell. The problem lies in things like playing games or running programs like itunes. I checked for all virus/malware, and there was nothing that I could see. I did a defrag and cleaned/cleared the registry and temp folder. Does this sound like it could be a hardware or driver problem? If its not a virus, could you give me a few other reason a computer would start doing this randomly.

What I usually do in this case is "msconfig" and disable all my "startup" programs that I dont need and maybe even some services that arent "microsoft". Try that then reboot and add the programs 1 by 1 rebooting after each to find the culprit program/service.

In case you dont know how to "msconfig" all you do is:

1)click start
2)click run
3)type " msconfig " without the quotes
4)uncheck unwanted programs/services from the "startup and services" tab.

Hello metwo and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in this log. It is clean.

I'm not sure what was meant by "programes seemed to find alot of things
and removed them". What programs found alot of things and what was removed? Also, was BitDefender on this machine and then removed? It does not appear that the uninstallation was complete because there are still some entries hanging around that were not cleaned up.

Post back with some additional details and I will review the information when it comes in.

Cheers.

have you gone to add or remove programs (under control panel) (classic view if using XP). Look it up if it is there you may want to delete it (WARNING: I am not sure what that program does so you may want to find that out first before deleting).

My son will be returning from Iraq soon, I have been using his computer to stay in touch with him. I have noticed it is running real slow now, Yahoo Messenger(latest version) freezes sometimes. Is there a checklist or some type of guide to follow for "tweaking" everything to speed it up, besides the usal, Defrag, Scan Disk, AdAware, SpyBot, etc. Can someone please help this disabled combat veteran help speed up my sons computer? Thank You.

Hi all,
I posted in the xp forum looking for help with my slow computer. one suggestion was to post my hijack log over here. Your staff did a great job a few months back getting rid of spyware on my machine.
The problem-very slow to fully start up and slow to open programs. It was fast when I bought it but seems to have gradually slowed down.
computer is HP pavilion 503n
1.7 ghz
128 mb ram
40 gb hard drive-15 mb free space
spy bot, adaware and norton scans have been run. all show clean.
Please help if you can.
Thanks

I've run "Ad Ware", "Spybot Search and Destroy", AVG suite, and McAfee "Stinger". I also removed AOL which seemed to help but it appears that not all of the AOL has been removed. The Windows and Office files have all been updated. There are a number of programs that Vista has blocked at startup. However, the machine still seems to be slow. For a slow computer, basic stuff to eliminate would be
chances of infection- if ur not sure, you might want to get ur log checked by a HTJ expert.
If there are too many items loading at start up, disable unnecessary ones.
Check ur HD space, if you havent already, run a disk cleanup and if the drive s fragmented, defrag it in safe mode after a chkdsk this can help improve performance.
How much RAM do you have? Consider adding more.
Aso if its been a long time, check if all ur fans are working fine and also blow out the dust.
