Dell Vostro 400 - freezes right away at Dell bios version screen

Q: Dell Vostro 400 - freezes right away at Dell bios version screen

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to assist with a problem that suddenly started with my second computer (Dell Vostro 400)
Its running windows 7 home premium and all the sudden it now stops at the Dell bios version screen. It did this a couple times the lastfew days, but when I restarted it, it booted ok, but when I checked on it later then the computer was frozen again with a black screen.  I have borrowed another computer from work and swapped out the hard drive, and it works fine with the other computer (same hardware). So I dont think its the hard drive. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Oh, I should mention that I do hear one beep and then the Dell screen shows up and then freezes.

I have a Vostro 1400 which runs with Vista Business.

It has stopped working properly all of a sudden. It starts up ok, I enter my password ok and it goes onto my desktop ok. But when I click on anything, whether it be an icon or the Start menu, it just freezes.

It's working fine in Safe mode. I've tried System Restore and CCleaner.

I have a feeling it might be when I tried to plug in a camera into the USB when it was shutting down (I didn't know it was shutting down). It might not be that, but that's when it started.

Help anyone???

The hard drive may have bad sectors. It is going to be hard to check it using Checkdisk, because you can't get to where the check is. Are there any drive utilities available in the bios or right before boot up?

Hey guys, I have a Vostro 410 that I recently tried to upgrade to BIOS version 1.03, because it rumored support for 8GB of ram, while the specifications state that the maximum ram supported on the board was 4GB. I ran the updater provided by dell in windows. The updater I used is

The updater appeared normal, told me I was on 1.0 and it was going to update to 1.03, I went ahead and pressed the update button and it erased the main block, then brought up an error message while trying to write the new version. I decided to shutdown because ultimately I couldn't leave it running forever. The BIOS is Phoenix and supposedly Phoenix has support for recovering BIOS by using win+b or fn+b, but I am having trouble getting these to work as I have a wireless keyboard and most things I've read say you have to use ps2, which isn't even included on this system. I have a usb floppy drive, as well as a conventional floppy drive and a usb flash drive. I've tried to use wincrisis with minidos.sys but haven't got any luck this far. I've already pulled the battery and let it sit for over 10 hours and that had no effect, I'm pretty sure this isn't a settings problem.

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks in advanced.

Im thinking it is because I havent got my boot options in the right order. Can anyone help?

Hey there everyone!

I'm having issues with a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop when it syncs with an iPhone. This laptop has already been replaced by Dell, but the new (and identical laptop, the HDD was switched) experiences exactly the same issue.

The issue

When the phone is plugged in to sync with the computer, multi-coloured lines appear up and down the screen and the previous content is no longer visible (or the screen goes blank, or the lines are horizontal). The only way to recover is to hard reboot the laptop.
Any ideas would be appreciated... should I try reinstalling the OS? Could the iPhone be faulty (I could try using another one)?

hi guys,
I have a Dell Vostro 220 desktop that's been running fine. Unfortunately something seems to have gone wrong when I updated the BIOS via the Dell website a few minutes ago.

Once Windows XP starts, it LOOKS like it's in safe mode (huge icons, etc.), even though it's not.

What's more, my USB mouse NO LONGER works. It's not even powered on.

Once the PC restarts, or I go into the set-up (before Windows loads), the mouse is ON again -- but not when Windows starts.

Is there a way to "reset" the bios so I can get things working again?? PLEASE HELP ME.

Hey, im having some issues. I have a DELL inspiron 5100 laptop and i just recently removed a virus that almost destroyed my hard drive, I got it to work fine but after a few days of use it started to freeze up on the DELL loading screen on the start up, i accidently pressed the F12 key and it took me to a screen with different ways to start up XP, like through the Hard drive or a disk.
i selected to run offthe hard drive and it froze up any help?

hi, after you hit F12 did you see the diagnostics program at all? Ordinarily I would say It may be worthwhile running a scan on the hard drive if you can. But, I see you removed a virus, can you tell me if it was with the help of the antimalware section on this forum? or did you just remove it yourself? I need to know if you are absolutely sure you removed all traces of the virus - if you had the help of a forum they would have given you the "all clear". Have you tried starting in safe mode at all?

Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

Hi all,
I have a spare computer from work, but I do not know the password to log in, and so would like to wipe it. Ergo, I decided to try and boot the computer using a USB thumb drive with Ubuntu on it, so as to wipe the windows partition on the hard drive and then install Ubuntu. The computer boots normally to the Windows XP login screen. When I press F2 or F12, there is no display output. I have tried this with a variety of monitors and with two D-SUB cables (one at a time). These are the Samsung LT27B551EW, LG 27EA63V-P and Dell Rev A00. None of them show either the Dell splash screen or the BIOS screen. I have tried pressing F2 and F12 at strategic intervals (every 2 seconds) but still there is no display output. I also know that I was able to access the BIOS on the same computer a few months ago, but I forgot which displays I used then - I had to wait for permission to wipe the hard drive.
I have also looked up this problem in a number of other places, and found that this is supposedly due to an incompatibility of some kind with the monitor. However, I am not sure as to how I might go about fixing this issue, as I do not have any other monitors or cables which work with the Dell - all my other cables are either HDMI or other sorts of cable which do not plug in to the Dell. If there is a way to use the hard drive and wipe it without accessing the BIOS I would also be grateful to hear about that too.

Try connecting the USB stick before you power the system on.
You can try this too:

Power off, and unplug power cord from rear of PC
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect power cord to rear of PC
Power on and immediately tap F12 a couple of times

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10.   The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers ,  some higher.   Will they ever test it??
If you try to upgrade,  windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen)  it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung.   Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point .  So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all.
Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8.   Why not fix it.

A:Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012).

Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8?

I bought my Dell Vostro 3800 ST almost 2 years ago, sadly I didn't really do my research before I bought it, and it turns out, card that came with it wasn't really great for gaming and it's nearing the end of it's life.
So I'm planning to buy proper card, but my tower is waaay to slim to fit in it comfortably.
So my question is, will I be able to take my motherboard to another, non-Dell case? If so, what type of case would be good? I did try to find online, what type of motherboard it is, but if there's an answer to that question, I can't find or understand it.
I'd be grateful for any help provided :)

A:Will my motherboard from Dell Vostro 3800 ST fit into non-Dell case?

It's more or less a micro-ATX board so it will likely fit a standard case.  That said, wiring the power switch, hard drive LEDs, etc. will be difficult - they're not standard and it may be a lot of trial and error to make work.

I was wondering if anyone would have some sound advice for me on this problem. I have a Dell Vostro 470, with Intel I5-3450 @ 3.10 GHZ, Nvidia Geforce GT 620 video card and 6 Gig of ram. When I start the computer, it begins normal startup, then just before the windows desktop appears...I get a black screen that shows only the mouse pointer. Sometimes it will show the mouse pointer and the taskbar but no icons. From there, I cannot shut it down unless I push the power button. Im using Windows 7 64 bit version. Usually it will startup normally afterwards that but not always. At first I thought this just happened when the computer is cold, but it happens either way. And sometimes it just starts normal. I did a full virus scan (using Norton 360) and no issues there. I used malwarebytes and it shows clean. I switched monitors and same problem and I also switched out the video card with another and still have the same problem. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I'm in the process of replacing the screen on my old Dell Vostro 1400. However, as I would like to buy it used (for obvious reasons) it's hard to find the exact part number I want at the right price so I was wondering which part numbers would be a good replacement the part number on my current screen is LTN141W1-L09 (Dell Part Number: 0DM110). Firstly, I was wondering what the part after the hyphen meant in the model Number. Also, can I replace this screen with one with a lower resolution or different aspect ratio?

I've also noticed that latitude D600 series shares a lot of hardware with the Vostro 1400 would any screen from there be compatible?

Thanks for reading

I would think that when you replace a screen it should be the exact same one as the original. you might find what you need on ebay as im sure someone might be selling one for parts or repair only.ive never replaced screens yet in my laptops because by the time they have gone bad it was more to fix it than the computer was might also check with a computer repair place they might have what you are looking for or tell you where to find the correct screen for that model.

When the laptop is started up the screen is very dull and dark. The brightness keys do nothing when pressed.

When i plug the external monitor in to the VGA port the output can be shown on the extenal monitor but not on the laptop screen even by pressing Function key + F8 to toggle displays.

The laptop graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS. I have tried replacing the driver however this has made no difference.

Has anyone any experiance of this problem or a problem like it. Could it be that the screen has died?

Hi all --

I've owned three Dell machines over the last few years, all of which have worked great, so when I recently decided to replace my current laptop, I went with a Vostro 1700. It was delivered on 7/14 and I have been migrating programs and data and attaching peripherals gradually to it over the last week to make sure nothing was conflicting. Things seemed to be working fine, so I started using it for my work yesterday and this afternoon, in the middle of editing a lengthy document, the screen went black and wouldn't reboot.

I spent almost 3 hours on the phone with Dell, taking out memory cards and hard drives and putting them back, turning the computer off and on, etc. I asked the rep what would cause the screen to go black and she told me it was probably a driver upgrade, but at the end of the conversation she told me they would replace the video card and the hard drive.

My first instinct is to return the thing and get a refund. I don't know if that's jumping the gun or not, but I'm not crazy about keeping a machine that had major issues in less than a week of light to moderate use. I've never had this kind of a problem before with a computer, especially one that is brand new, so I'm looking for opinions about how to proceed. How often does something like this happen? What's the likelihood that this is just the beginning of a long nightmare? or that once the new parts are installed it'll be a problem-free machine?

Hi Everyone.

As the title says about, i have a Dell Vostro 1520 and im running Windows 7 with a 32bit. It is only 2 years only. It started about a month ago. I was on my laptop viewing and deleting some unwanted photos i had. A few minutes later i realized that i deleted a photo that i wanted. So i went to the recycling bin and restored that photo. When i went back to my photos and went into the album, it said something like i do no have permission to access this folder. Please press continue to get full permission. I clicked continue and i got the access i should have. Now i tried many more random folders and the same thing happened. Also when i came out of the folders, the folders had a big pad lock sign on the front of it. After that i shut down the laptop and went to turn it back on. The laptop will power on like normal. I can press f12 for the boot options. which i have already tried many times. I also tried it in safe mode and what-not, but still nothing. I can hear the fan and stuff spinning up like normal. I have also put and CD into the CD ROM and that spins up fine. So after the Dell logo on the screen, it goes black and stays that way with the cursor. You can move the cursor around no problem. I should also add that the battery light is and has been flashing for a good wile. Its flashing orange and blue. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the battery. I was hoping someone could help by advising if this error is likely to be the cause of the blue screens and if so what the likely underlying cause and solution might be. Is it likely to be a malware problem?

As soon as I install the battery, the screen with flash gray very quickly, then be black for about a second, then will display a gray screen (lighter gray to the right, and darker to the left, sometimes it flickers a good bit). This is before I press any buttons to try to start the computer. And, once the screen is gray, the computer will not respond to the on/off button (computer will not start). It makes no difference if the power cord is plugged in or not.

If I remove the battery and insert the power cord, the screen will also flash gray very quickly, the battery light will be lit for about 1 second, and then the screen will go gray (same as before). And, as before, computer will not start. No fans run, nothing but a gray screen.

But, I found out if I hit the power button after that first flash and while the screen is black, the computer will start like normal. (I'm writing this from the computer). If I shut down the computer, as soon as it is shut down (fans are off) the gray screen returns and the computer is no longer responsive.

While the computer is running the display seems fine, no troubles. It's a slow old computer, but seems to work fine otherwise.

I have a Dell Vostro 1000 running Windows XP. If I leave my laptop running and shut the laptop lid and leave it for a while, when I open it back up, the screen resolution has changed. Everything is very large and you can't see the whole screen at one time. But when I go to the display properties screen and check the screen resolution settings, the actual bar setting has not moved to a new setting. I have to move it to a new setting, let it go there then move it back to the original postion and reset it to get it back to my original resolution setting. The original setting is 1280 X 768. The only way I have been able to kind of work around this was to go to display properties, chose screen saver, then power scheme, then the advanced button, then in the box where you instuct it on what to do when you close the lid, tell it to go to standby. It then does not change the resolution when i close the lid but it also interupts the wireless connection so no emails are loaded while the lid is closed and it is in standby mode. I then have to wait evertime I open the lid for it to crank up my wireless connection and then wait for it to load any new emails that have come in since I closed the lid. Any ideas anyone.

I have a Vostro 400. It halts on the Dell black and white splash screen (F2 and F12 in the upper right corner). Pressing the F2 or F12 keys have no effect. This last time (today) that it happened, I let it sit powered up and it is now on a black/white screen that says Windows is loading files and appears to have stopped. Most recent hardware is a new Cannon printer, installed maybe 2 months ago and the Vostro ran fine until maybe 2 weeks ago. I have not checked the power supply yet, but I have replaced the battery to no effect. I've tried booting from CD but the machine doesn't seem to be getting to that point.

I just replaced my not working motherboard and power supply card with new ones. Now the windows seems to boot but just when the start screen is about to show up, the screen go black. I know it's up because when i slide my finger in the biological sensot it would make the sound of a successful login.
If you guys have any suggestions except repairing or reinstalling the OS, i'd happy to hear that.
Thanks in advance

A:Black screen problem - new motherboard - Dell Vostro 3550

It's probably an Activation Problem. If it's a new Motherboard, it's new Hardware, even if it is the exact motherboard you replaced.

If you can pull up Task Manager from the black screen (If you have a mouse but nothing else) - Then you can stick your install disk into the Optical Drive and run Setup.exe- This will fix any activation problems. Run an In-Place Install which means just choose "Upgrade" from the choice of either upgrade or fresh install. I've had to do this twice.

Hello jiturajpattnaik and welcome to Seven Forums.

You'll probably get a better response if you post your question in the Crashes and Debugging section. Here's a link on the info you should provide:

Due to time zone differences and how busy the BSOD experts are, it may take a while for an answer. In the meantime you culd try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial) in case any system files have become damaged or corrupt. If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

There is an issue with a bunch of dell laptops (Vostro 3550, Inspiron n5110 included) where the laptop display is not detected. All of the new drivers and drivers on this site do not fix the problem. There are a couple of workarounds that you do in the meantime though.

1) Hook up an external monitor. Then you can at least use the laptop (only with the external monitor though).
2) Disable the Display adapter under computer properties. Screen shuts off after boot animation - Microsoft Answers (this will only allow a low resolution and no graphic acceleration.)

I hope they fix this soon as it is tough to develop for an OS that I can't even use.

/forcebios is the key command in DOS! If you have been struggling to restore your BIOS to an earlier version you will immediately realize how important this little command is.
You will need to use it after the .exe, after the c: prompt in DOS to revert to an older BIOS. It will look something like this when you enter it (the 530_1016.exe is the name of the 1.0.16 BIOS I found through Google):
And this allows you to return to the older BIOS after you have created a Boot USB, placed the BIOS .exe on the USB, inserted the USB and booted using F12.
I love old Dell desktop PCs! Especially the Vostro 200, but an Inspiron 530 recently gave me a real headache.
The most recent BIOS for the Inspiron 530 (BIOS 1.0.18) has all sorts of bugs.. not least that it will forget BIOS/CMOS settings (giving CMOS checksum error) and will need to have the time and date and boot order reset if someone switches off the mains.
The only fix for me, having renewed the CMOS battery and  wiped the CMOS using the jumper (to no avail) was to restore an earlier BIOS (I chose 1.0.16).
Having created the Boot USB (following links on Google) and having put the old BIOS 1.0.16 on the USB and pressed F12 at startup I ran the old BIOS. But the DOS message I got was:
New bios version is low! ALL files removed!
This meant that I was trying to load an older BIOS and it wasn't going to allow me to do that.
After spending hours scanning the web I found an old, long closed, thread ... Read more

How to Downgrade Dell Inspiron N3542 BIOS from A12 to A06?
I upgraded my BIOS to A12. It change my Legacy BIOS to UEFI. Now I want to install windows afresh but it didn’t boot into windows disc or USB flash drive while secure boot mode enabled.
If I disable secure boot mode it boots into windows disc but pointer does not work in windows setup. I attached an external mouse and installed windows but when it finished installing, pointer don’t appear and touchpad not working even after installing latest touchpad driver.
If I change my UEFI to Legacy BIOS mode and boot into windows disk it install windows. While in windows setup it asks me to change GPT partition style to MBR partition style. I googled and did this but the medthod compelled me to clean me hard drive and loss all the data. Everytime I install winodws I have to clean my hard drive.
The installed windows is not working well with many errors and not allowing updates and many more things that I am not able to describe here.
I want to rollback my BIOS to previous version that is A06 so that I get all these problems solved.
I downloaded previous version of BIOS from Dell website but when I run it It tells me Dell don’t recommend to downgrade and closed.
Please guide me how can I downgrade it.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

Hello to all,
I want to report a problem with BIOS update for Win7 64-bit OS on my Dell Inspiron 3543 laptop. After BIOS update from A06 to A07 (or A08 the symptoms are the same) windows 7 freezes on the start (after welcome screen). I have found that there is a problem with service called  "Multimedia Class Scheduler". When it is disabled the OS starts normally (except services connected with "Multimedia Class Scheduler"), but when this service is enabled OS freezes and you cannot do anything.
It would be nice if this error can be fixed, because I also want to upgrade my laptop with latest BIOS fix. Is there anybody with the same problem, who manage to resolve it? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... A:Dell Laptop, Display Turns to Static/System Freezes, Dell Can't Fix

The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

Hey everyone, I seem to have a recurring problem that I just can't puzzle out on my
own and need some help here.

A few months ago I had to replace my power supply unit, and at the same time decided to
upgrade my RAM and OS (moving from Windows Vista to Win 7).
Before I was running on 1 gig of DDR2 PC2-5300 667 MHz. I updated it to PNY 4 gigs
(also DDR2 PC2-5300). Computer kept restarting so I brought it down to 2 gigs - things
worked ok for a little while and then I started to have similar problems again. My PC
continually restarts itself randomly, Displays the Blue Screen after an hour or so of
operation and constantly freezes on the starting Windows 7 logo screen.
I have absolutely no clue where these issues could be coming from. All of the RAM seems
to be accurate spec wise and I don't believe the Power Supply to be at fault. Also, this is more recently, whenever I try to sync up my iPod with iTuens, my system also decides to restart itself randomly during the sync. Any help
on the issue would be GREATLY appreciated.

Below are additional PC specs:

- OS Windows 7 ultimate 32bit
- CPU, Intel Core 2 - (2) of them at 2.13 GHz
- 2 Gigs PNY RAM
- (any additional specs needed - please let me know!)

I'm out of ideas here; any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: Rewritten for clarity
On Realtek ALC3861 Audio Driver (ver., A00) for Windows 10, there is no longer a button labeled "Show Meters" under Speakers/Headphones > Maxx Audio Pro in the bottom right corner (please see attached screenshot). This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup.
What I did:
Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version.
What I expected:
The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver.
What really happened:
Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared.

I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc)

If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it.

A:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

So eagerly i tought to buy this cool looking laptop for a huge $2000 i needed it to output to a hdmi monitor ot TV so sometimes i could see movies as well, now i had to buy the special DA200 dell adaptor and in the past 3 weeks it`s been a complete nightmare, i WAS NEVER ABLE to make it work permanently. The chat support was no help at all usually simply resuming to try and replace the part but i do think the part is good and i didn't feel like waiting 2 weeks for it to ship from china.

The ethernet and usb work on the DA200 adaptor , EXCEPT HDMI.  SOMETIMES it would work briefly until next restart, i had tried everything ever available on the internet. The laptop is running Windows 10 (as it`s restricted to that version, i tried to install other versions with lots of issues and compatibility issues) so  i have installed reinstalled and installed different versions of the video driver for all possible windowses and none worked. what did work was very brief until next restart and that usually happened when i had a fresh windows install, after the first restart i will get a non working hdmi again.

I have tried several hdmi cables so i know it`s not the hdmi cable or the tv ot the monitor. and nobody seems to be able to help!!

I just got my new Dell Inspiron 1420 with Vista today and immediately had problems. The screen freezes, not on the page its on, but with lines across both ways. I have to press OFF button and once computer is off, I restart and it goes back to wherever it was. This first happened the first time I turned it on and started to set up my new account. It has continued to happen every 5 to 10 minutes. Dell online tech support helped and said to upgrade Video card and BIOS. I did without anyhelp. It still freezes. They then told me to run a diagnostic test, I did the first part with no problem. There were no errors reported and the screen did not freeze for about one hour while test ran. Then when switched to windows system for extended test it froze. I repeated same thing 3 times and each time it went to windows system, it froze. It has frozen 3 times while I write this and I've had to turn off and on (comes back to same page). Can anyone help me? When not frozen (less than 5 min) it runs great!! Thank you!!

There has to be something that has stopped the dell welcome screen with the blue loader below

A:No Dell welcome screen, cant do a new instal, no way of entering bios

Hello Lodgik mate is this the laptop you are trying to install on or the old Dell? which is what I think you are trying to install to.

Mate if you are using the Dell the just get a new hard drive and be done with it. Mind you I have the exact same model Dell that you have and I don't know if the specs would be up to it as mine only has 2GB RAM and some slow old CPU so be prepared for a fairly slow machine and don't forget you will need a 32bit version of 7 and if you do go new hard drive you can get the OEM 7 and that is going to save you a lot of money even if yo up the HDD and some more RAM.

Some system specs on the Dell would be handy - Speccy - Download < download from piriform and post back results of the run using the XP.

I own a E6420 which I intended to rejuvenate a bit, by replacing the HDD by a SSD.
I replaced the HDD by the SSD but the SSD was not recognised by the bios. Hence I entered the BIOS and tried to change the SATA setting from RAID to ATA.
Oops. Very. Wrong. Move.
The laptop hasn't booted ever since. The dell logo shows, but when the progress bar is complete I only get a black screen. If I try to press F2 or F12, the upper right message shows (entering setup...) but the freeze happens anyway, usually with the upper part of the screen being black and the lower part still showing the remains of the dell logo.
What have I tried? Many boot tries:
- with the old HDD
- without any hard disk at all
- without any disk (no HD, no optical)
- with or without the battery...
- with a bootable Windows install DVD in the optical drive
- with a bootable USB diag stick made with
All this with no avail.
I've also tried to clear the BIOS settings (going back to factory settings seems a good idea) by unplugging the cell coin battery. (and yes I did it by the book, with the power button down during many seconds sequence). After re-plugging the cell coin battery, the boot sequence is longer before the logo appearance (and funny enough, just plugging back the laptop starts it), but the end of the story remains the same. Pressing F12 gets to half logo freeze. Period.

When doing a "cold" start up, my Dell Inspiron 5160 sometimes hangs at the XP Pro Welcome screen. When it hangs, it's completely frozen - the cursor won't move. At that point I have to hold down the power button to shut it down. The hang never occurs during "warm" restarts, and usually happens maybe once in ten boot-ups ...just enough to lull you into a false sense of security

I tried doing a clean install of XP Pro. It seemed to work fine for a while but eventually the problem returned. I've run CHKDSK with all options applied many times - it never finds a problem or fixes anything. The BIOS has been updated to the latest version. I tried replacing the memory as well, but it made no difference.

Possible clues:

- There is no hard drive activity when the machine halts. When restarting after a freeze, the drive is always heavily fragmented.

- Every once in a while, the cursor will also freeze after waking from sleep mode. Again, I have to do a hard shut down & reboot to fix.

- Whenever the the freeze happens, none of the keys - including the "Caps Lock" key - will respond.
Any ideas on where to go from here would be most welcome

Random BSOD

Different OS installs, different ram, different hard drives, not fixed after bios update...

Seems to start after a Windows 7 SP1 update, SP1 installs but it seems like the bug shows up after the windows updates.

Often lockups/BSOD at logoff but also other times.
This attachment is the standard dump, I'll get another full dump after this reboot and post it too.

Hmm... Your specs say Win 8 but you reference a Win 7 SP1 update issue. Please clarify.

Hello. I have a Dell Vostro with the windows 7 operating system and an Intel Core 2 duo processor. I've had it for 15 months and I've never had any problems other than occasional freeze ups. Now, I switched to Century Link (not sure if relevant) but around 6 pm (Mountain time) the internet slowed down substantially and froze my webpages and it seemed like my entire computer stopped responding. So I held down the power button. When I tried to reboot, I chose the safety one to see if any files were damaged or corrupted. Unfortunately instead of showing me something, I only see the Windows 7 blue screen with the leaves and bird. I left it alone for 20 minutes, nothing. So I shut it down and tried again. Same thing.

I've never had any problems and I'm horrible when it comes to computers. I'm using an old Dell and it's horribly slow and ancient. I would really appreciate any help or advice you can give me.

Can you try booting into Safe Mode. To get into the Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Options Menu". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

This will hopefully bootup into windows with the START menu available amongst other things.

Then I want you to try a Windows System Restore. You did not mention what operating system is running on the Dell laptop. Assuming it is Windows XP try the following:

To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:

Log on to Windows as an administrator.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

On the Welcome to System Restore page, click to select the Restore my computer to an earlier time option, and then click Next.
Collapse this imageExpand this image
On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.
Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.

Hi PrioSteel! Try going to Start->Right-Click On Computer->At the left bar click on Device Manager (You may get a UAC Prompt, just accept it) Check if any Devices have an Exclamation Mark on their icon (See ScreenShot) If they do, the device needs drivers.

I doubt anyone here will know what you are talking about from your first post (hence why you got no replies in a week), so, additional clearer information will be needed.
Do you mean she plugged in a new LCD monitor, or that she installed some e machine monitoring software?
What is "start up mode"? Why does she have to push F1, what happens if she doesn't push F1?
What "says there is an extra graphic's download or something like that"  Do you mean that when you get into windows it tries to install some sort of graphics driver for a new graphics device or something?
Are you able to get into windows?

I don't see anything appealing in the review you posted. It has Intel video, which is commonly known for poor performance. You might need video performance because you would do a lot of graphs. ( I think, for a stock trading business )

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 running WinXP Home. No sound. I do get the system beeps; there is no longer a volume icon in the tray. I think I am missing something like the name of the soundcard under "other devices". See picture~It indicates a hardware conflict and I have run that diagnostic with no result. I have downloaded updated drivers.....I have read so many solutions I am thoroughly confused..... So, I purchased a Soundblaster USB sound card, followed the directions to no avail. Then I read :"If you think you have a sound card installed but you don't see it under the Sound, video and game controllers category, expand the Other devices category and check the devices listed there.
Laptops don't usually have sound cards. Instead, they have integrated sound processors, which appear in the same category in Device Manager. If there's a yellow question mark next to the name of the sound card in Device Manager, there might be a problem.
Right-click the name of the sound card, and then click Properties.
Click the General tab, and then look in the Device status box to identify problems with the sound card.
If there's a problem, you might need a new driver for your sound card. For more information, see Step 3: Update drivers." I have done that.
"If your computer uses onboard sound which is built into the motherboard then make sure it is enabled in the BIOS. If you are using an actual PCI soundcard then the onboard audio should be disabled." M... Read more

Hi all

I hope someone can help me with my problem. When I turn on the computer I get a black screen that says one or two things:

PXE-E61: Media test failure check cable
PXE-M0F-exiting broadcom PXE Rom.

Operating System not found

or Press F12 and any button

So when I press F12 and enter I get a screen that says Boot menu

Hard drive
USB storage
CD Rom Drive
Removable device
Broad com PXE

I hit hard drive and the computer turns on and operates normally except for internet use. For some reason I cannot connect. I added my network but it still won't work.

Any idea why it won't turn on sometimes and I get the operating system not found message and why when I hit the hard drive button it turns on like normal. I know I need a new adapter as it always say that it is unrecognizable and will not charge battery. I might need a new battery as well. I think I got that message before it stopped signing on normally. It has been a few years I sort of just put this computer to the side and got a new one when it went all wonky.

P.S. my computer knowledge and verbiage is practically nill so try and be as simple as possible.

A:Dell Vostro 1000

PXE-E61: Media test failure check cable
It usually means that at start up it did not find the hard drive, Cd but is trying to boot from the Network card.

Remove the hard drive - check the contacts and then reseat the hard drive.
Check in the Bios and see if the Bios sees the hard drive.
A dead Bios [Cmos] battery can also be the cause.

Dell Vostro 1000 (which had Vista Home Basic).

This laptop had no issues, but I wanted to install a new OS.

I have done ("several times") a complete reformat and fresh install with a Windows 7 Professional, as well as, Vista Home Premium.

I have updated BIOS and Chipset drivers as well. The PC was not doing this prior to any reformat or full install, so its only after these processes

The screen continues to blackout, but the PC is still running. I do a hard power off and it comes back up, but continues to have the video go black constantly. I have read on the forum about this issue, but I have done all it states to do to try and remedy this problem.

Any help in resolving this issue, would be appreciated.

Hi Folks,
I'm new here and this is my very first post. I'm unsure if this question has been posted already so apologies in advance if it has.
Basically, I have a DELL Vostro tower that currently has 1GB RAM. I bought a 2GB Crucial RAM DDR3L stick which i thought was compatible. However when i insert the RAM and swich on I get a double beep.
Can anyone please advise me what i'm doing wrong here as I really dont know what to do next.
I was thinking the problem may be that the RAM is DDR3L instead of DDR3, however i'm really not sure.
Any help from anyone would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

Unless there is an option in the bios to increase the amount of system ram allocated to graphics, there is nothing to do.

Also can not suggest/recommend a new video card as what you have despite it being sold as a desktop, is nothing more than a laptop built into the monitor with all the same limitations as far as upgrading parts goes.

This usually ships with Vista basic - which is as much use as a chocolate teapot. You can upgrade to vista premium or bite the downgrade bullet and take it to an OS XP Home or PRo that is established with at least 3 service packs. You don't include any specs - so answers may be vague as a result. Give us PC info. and we may be ale to help.
