When I start Windows Vista up the desktop screen will do either one of two things: a) come up normally, then flash to a smaller resolution, with giant icons, and then flash back to my normal resolution--with the icons now realigned either along the top or the left, because of that resolution reset--or b) come up with the wrong resolution first, big icons and all, and then go black and flip to the normal resolution--with the icons of course reset. (I think it goes to black every time it switches, btw.) I have googled a lot about screen resolution changes being a problem with the fast user switch function, although nothing that quite aligns with my version of the issue. It happens without switching anything, although it does seem like it is related to the fast user switch function bc of the following:
Last week I went on vacation and had someone watching my dogs...I turned on guest account and had her log in as that. The first time she used it there was no start menu to log off with, and she shut down manually. The other few times she was able to shutdown onscreen, and that was that. The times I have turned on the guest account and gone in there, hoping that exiting and turning it back off will somehow restore things, there was no start menu (it's like the screen resolution made everything so large most icons and the start menu are offscreen somewhere), and I used cont-alt-del to switch back to my normal user profile. This has changed nothing. System restoration to a day, even... Read more

Go to search, type device manager. In device manager look for any yellow warning markers by the drivers. If none, make sure that the monitor and graphics driver is up to date.
If that is not the solution.
Make a full updated anti virus scan.
Donwloand and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

Not the best way to install a driver, but will work in a pinch.

Hello and welcome to Ten Forums

You can usually find someone here who will have an answer.

Try this:
Turning off during the boot process three times in a row will force the system to offer you advanced startup options and from there you can select safe mode or other recovery options.

My Win10 laptop flips out on boot with a blue screen, right before/after you can see the mouse. It never reboots when it says it will. And it seems to blame my graphics card for this, as Catylitst Controll on logging claims that there is no AMD driver or thats its malfunctioning. I have to reinstall it to get my computer working better than a snail's pace, and for Catylist Controll to reconise it.
Will get a dump of the error, just gotta restart a few times, as i accidently deleted the error dump and used disk cleaner.

Hello,

I have been having this problem since a week or so. Broni has helped me in malware forum to rule out malware as responsible. My machine is clean and I was refered here for further help.

Here is my problem:

At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally.

Last week, problem was intermittent, it now happens all the time.

Windows boot-up was fine before.

Please help me.

A:Windows load screen at boot, looong black screen, then normal startup

I had this tons of times with my old XP PC. It is normal if you have a lot of files on the HDD and you have little RAM. How much RAM do you have? What is the capacity of the HDD? And do you have the Windows XP disc? Would you be willing to upgrade the RAM and/or the OS if we must resort to that? Or would you rather just buy a new PC?

I bought a second hand old toshiba satellite l300 laptop from a garage sale because i was planning to use it for downloading it was a vista home premium so i updated it to windows 7 ultimate the problem is when i open it after upgrading (after few minutes) it freezes to white, blue or black screen. I rebooted it several times the same result happens.

I tried using it own safe mode but I don't experience the same problem, i just want to know what could be the possible reason for this to occur.

I need help ASAP. My computer was having many issues today, so I did a system restore. When it was done, it downloaded updates, I only restored it back to yesterday. Now, when I log into my account, the screen stays black and all I see is the pointer. What can I do to solve this? The PC is shut down right now.

A:Solved: Screen is black after system restore and update. Set back one day, screen is

Usually, system restore is used to resolve problems like this. You might want to consider doing a clean install and see if that has any affect. Hopefully your data is saved on an external or flash drive. There's also additional options that you can find here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Resolving-stop-blue-screen-errors-in-Windows-7

Hi people, i've just registered to this forum to ask you about this, Since i've made a registry defrag with TuneUp Utilities (which probably has gone wrong), when i reset the computer, and I logon to my user, it shows a black screen, then back at the logon screen. If I do it again, the user doesn't show up anymore!
It happened three times already, i had to make new users, and i'm sick of it. Any ideas of what could it be?

A:Black screen after login for some seconds, then back at logon screen!

Welcome!

Yet another case of registry defraggers causing harm. In the future, you know now to stay far away from them.

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before TuneUp utilities. If that doesn't work, it will be time for a repair install.

Good luck!

Hi all,

I have Win7 Ultimate x64 installed on an brand new HP Pavilion s5-1205z Slimline desktop.

When I am reading an email or document the screen will just suddenly flash to a black screen for a second. Sometimes it does this several times in a row, and other times just once or twice. It is random and does not matter what program I am in, if I am browsing, playing a video on-line, or typing. I have installed Java and done as much troubleshooting as I can and can't find anything that relates to that kind of behavior at all in the Help Files or FAQ's.

Any suggestions of where I might look to see if I need to check or uncheck something, and what, would be very much appreciated.

A:PC screen suddenly flashes to a black screen and back

Combining the info that you posted here with the info in this thread - I gotta wonder if someone is able to remote into your computer. If you are not too far along in setting up your computer, you might want to consider a clean install without all of the bloatware.

Unless you have a specific need for Java - uninstall it. If you need it, then it might be worth the security risk of having it installed. If you don't need it - then why risk having it installed?

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. Please help. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. I'm hoping there will be a patch or service pack or some update that will fix this. Any ideas why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

I had the same problem at first. Then one day the listing of all my apps disappeared. I did a refresh and lost a lot of programs but the files were still there. Then I noticed that the problem with the apps had fixed itself and they worked. My feeling is that the initial install wasn't complete and the refresh completed the install. Recently, after loading my Epson printer's CD, the apps once again disappeared. Had to do a system restore. Now I am having trouble with my screen just being black and not coming on at all...even after a reboot. Win8 has a lot of problems.

Hello. I am trying to fix an HP G62-367DX Notebook PC.
Operating sys: Win 7, 64bit, AMD Turion(tm) 530II Dual-Core Processor, 4GB, 2.50GHz. I had this laptop since December of 2010 and on June of 2013 is when I used my notebook PC and was initially of no use. I have been working on my laptop on and off since. I am not afraid to open the sucker up and get this thing up and running.

The problem started out with what most ppl call it, the "blue screen of death". Like most ppl, I did ignore the blue screen and did a restart which brought me to the normal Windows screen and then it would start back up just fine. I found this in Device Manager's (Hidden Files):
Non-Plug and Play Drivers
-! ehdrv
-! epfwwfp
-! Security Processor Loader Driver
I am not sure if it has anything to do with what it was the blue screen situation, but I tried searching on the net on what it all meant and to see if I was able to fix it, but before I was able to do something about it, the blue screen kept popping up and it was getting worse.

The problem progressed to where on Windows startup it would just stop there, blue screen would pop up and of course I had to restart it and do an F8 key press for Safe Mode. I had to work on Safe Mode for a good couple of weeks before I can figure out the problem/s. I believe I had went into the system and found out it had something to do with some kind of error... *sigh* I did write it down, but that was like a month ago and I am unable to locate my ... Hi, I am having several problems with my computer, wondering if I am infected with something? First noticed the computer running slowly. Then began freezing all the time. Then noticed that when I switch to a new internet page at times I notice a small black screen that will pop-up or flash on the page, but only for a second...almost like you'd get on a "run command" type scrren, if that makes sense. Hi, thanks for checking my question. I haven't found an answer to my particular situation:

Dell xps m1430 laptop w/vista (32).

It all started with a blue screen w/scrolling text after the fated restart. The blue screen text said "if this is the first time you've seen this message..." and then comp restarted, again showing the blue screen, then restarted into windows repair mode, after repair mode tried to fix the problem comp restarted, then the screen went black / blank right after the little windows loading animation (where the bar keeps moving from left to right and there's a small windows logo).
It all happened fast, so there may have been steps I forgot, but that's the jist of it.

Now screen always goes black / blank during startup after the windows loading animation, so I can't start windows in normal mode.
I can start in safe mode if I manually force shutdown by holding the power button, so I'm not imploding with fear... ok I am.

Possible causes:
1. This occured right after installing 11 vista updates (that restart was when I saw the blue screen)

2. Also occured the restart after running a patch called "Vista TCP/IP and UAC AutoPatch 6.0" I downloaded it from softpedia, the developer was listed as defcon, and their website listed was securevista.net, but the site is down(I found this out after the problem occured). Hello, originally my problem is that my internet browsers (Internet explorer, firefox) can not display any kind of pages because of some kind of virus. Also I had some kind of fake Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) asking me to download more fake AV's onto my computer but I knew well enough that it was fake so I close it. This also shows up in safe mode. MSE block me from opening things such as iexplorer.exe or sometimes it would say tskmanager is a virus and it wouldn't let me open anything. So eventually I google this up, and I read somewhere that told me to rename hotfix.exe to hotfix1.exe when I run %APPDATA% so the annoying MSE would stop showing up. It also told me to update my Malwarebyte which I still can not do because I still do not have access to the internet. By the way I am using another computer to type this. So again, I tried to do some more research to fix my internet problem and I found this site that told me to download KillGodzilla.exe and run it and reboot my computer, after that I should update my Malwarebyte but of course, I can't do that because after the WINDOWS loading screen, the blue log in screen doesn't show and displays a black screen which flickers sometimes, after a few minutes it would restart my computer. Also same thing for safe mode. Does anyone know what is going on? Did I screw up my computer to badly? Do I need to reset my BIOS? I am using Windows XP if that helps. Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and today I suddenly got a blue screen error message, the main message said "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". After rebooting, I got the same message. Then on the next reboot I couldn't get to the login screen.

I used my Dell OS Recovery CD that I created to try and repair Windows XP. It asked for a place to partition/fragment Windows, and then it went through copying files etc.

After that, I tried to restart, I got the normal Dell Boot screen but then it went to a black screen, with only a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

I cannot do the Ctrl Alt F11 option to recover Windows XP, I can only either choose F2 or F12 at the initial boot screen.

Please help, I really do not know what to do!

What is the blue screen error message all about? I haven't installed any software or hardware so I do not see what might of caused the problem!

Help!

Hi all,

Starting yesterday my computer would go through startup... while loading the desktop it would crash to blue screen with white text (unfortunately, I can't remember the exact error message). If restarted, it either goes to a blank black screen or back to blue, and I could only get the computer to operate in safe mode with networking. My antivirus software (avast free, malwarebytes)scanned and found no infections.

I have Windows 7, Samsung laptop.

Today, I was able to start the computer normally and am functioning with internet (still acting a little funny), but I am sure something is still not right. I also did a system restore last night, with the same problems (crashing, not starting up).

Any assistance would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Brit

Hello and thanks for reading,

I have a 2 year old HP pavilion dv6 series laptop running windows 7. Yesterday I turned it on and it started normally but when I tried to browse on Firefox it gave me the blue screen (for the first time ever) and it shut down. Fearing I had a virus I ran it in safe mode and started a scan and began transporting my pictures via Dropbox just in case it died on me. Sure enough a weird error message (couldnt figure out what program made the message pop up) popped up saying I had a bunch of urgent viruses.. I didn't click on it at all and before I couldn't think of what to do the blue screen popped up and it shut down. When I tried to restart it the HP splash sign popped up and the screen flickered black and a blinking cursor started in the upper left corner. So this is where I stand now... Black screen with blinking cursor. Set default setting in BIOS (didn't work) and F8 (safe mode) or F11 (system restore) does nothing... The black screen just stays there. Any ideas? Is it a gonner? I'm hoping to get back on and get my pictures if possible. Help please!

Just today, I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\config\system."

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...

Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks very much for your help.

A:Blue screen of death, boot problems, black screen startup

It's a nasty error that requires some persistance and resourcefullness to overcome without a clean install.

If you have a Windows CD or have the recovery console installed, you might want to have a go at these directions.

My problem started much like that of Busybee, with files being deleted, orphan files being restored and security something or other, however, after reboot from CD, and running Startup Repair, the tests all appear to be OK, except "Root Cause Found - Volume on disk is corrupt" Result: Completed successfully, Error Code=0x0

At this point the pc goes through the never ending sequence of trying to boot up, black screen then blue screen, etc.

Most recent change, made a day or so prior to the crash, was retuning digital tv tuner when the changeover from Analog to Digital signal was needed to update channels here in UK. The screen shows "No Signal Analog" at beginning and end of reboot sequence.

The black screen suggests this may be a recent hardware or software issue, and advises removal of any recent changes, but as I cannot get into the system, let alone the control panel, I am unable to remove or disable anything.

Would really appreciate being able to at least recover my files, and as I am unable to access the operating system either by safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, or a normal reboot, would welcome any advice about how I can achieve this.

I have a laptop also running Vista 32 bit if that would be of any help in accessing the files.

Hello,

My laptop will not boot. I end up with an empty black screen or a blue screen with no icons, just a cursor. I get choices for 'normal startup' or ' repair' but not safe mode. Any help appreciated.

My screen came up the other day blue and saying it was checking disk and that volume was dirty. now the screen is black. computer acts like it is coming up but just sits there. Is there anything I can do?

A:blue screen, ckdisk, volume dirty, now black screen

First, backup your data using a bootable disk (such as a Live Linux or Ultimate Boot CD)
If the scan didn't fix the drive (if the drive is still marked as "dirty") then you'll most likely have to format the drive (and will lose everything if you haven't backed it up).
Then start with these free diagnostics (before formatting the drive):

Quote:

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

Good Morning,

For the past several months I have been having problems with my HP desktop computer. When my system reboots I sometimes get a black screen with nothing on it or it gets stuck on the windows logo or I get a blue screen with a bunch of writing.

The blue screen tends to happen with the computer goes into hibernation. So I changed my settings to that it doesn't happen but I would like to fix that so that I can give my computer a rest during the time that I'm not using it.

I have checked for malware, viruses you name it... nothing.

The best way to do this is to simply turn it off; it will also save on the electricty bills too.
When I am not using my machine, I turn it off, because here in South Australia we have the second highest electricity charges in the world.

Can you tell us what the blue screen says; usually this is due to a recent hardware or software change; however, in your instance it might be the Hibernation feature that is malfunctioning.
Post back with the information about the blue screen, please.

Kind Regards,

This can happen at any time for me (including when I was re-installing windows in an attempt to fix the problem... did not go well ) but more often than not happens during web-browsing and especially when watching youtube vids. I'm going to assume it has something to do with my graphics card as the blue screen does not actually come up... instead the screen goes black and then I have to restart the computer. Anyways upon boot up and log in I get a windows message that tells me that windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown ect.. and the numbers are:

Have you activated your Win 7?

Fully and completely update your Win7. Afterwards, I'll be asking you to submit a file which will show me all of the installed updates.

The update procedure will take qute a period of time since you do not have SP1 installed. This means there are updates to get you up to SP1 and then there about 100 updates post-SP1.

I chose Start Windows Normally, which did indeed start windows normally, but I wasn't sure what caused this problem in the first place, so i ignored it. I turned my computer off.

Later i turned my computer back on and was confronted by another screen, this time a Blue screen.. A Stop error, can't exactly remember the error, but said something about "memory dump'...
I eventually got avoided a problem with this screen and got into windows.. However this morning, when i turn the computer on, I was forced to use 'Last Known Good Configuration"

A:Blue Screen, Black Screen??? Stop Error Code?

Hi Kirstie, computers are great when they work huh? These stop errors and blue screens of death can have many causes. Sometimes they occur when a computer is getting older and some piece of hardware is going bad, like a memory stick for instance. Other times these errors occur after installing a new program or doing a windows update. They can be quite difficult to pin down sometimes as well. I would be glad to help you find the cause of the error if you will answer a few questions for me. By answering these questions I should be able to determine the cause and help you to correct it.

Here are some questions for you to answer that will help me. Just answer them the best you can and if you dont know an answer its ok. If you already answered anything I'm asking in your first post just skip over it.

1). What kind of computer do you have? Laptop? Desktop? Dell, HP, Ect?

I received the following error message when I attempted to restart my computer:

C0000218 Unknown Hard Error

When I restarted after the blue screen it went into a check disk but would not finish the scan.

I have tried to start the computer in safe mode with internet connection and after a few minutes the screen goes black. I've tried to start it using last known configuration and the screen goes black. Everything I try ~ the screen goes black.

Help!!!!

A:Blue screen & now won't start in safe mode, screen goes black

I'm writing from my husband's laptop because my desktop is completely dead.

We were out of town for several days and when we returned my desktop was running very slow so I attempted to restart it. It locked up, I pressed/held the power button and when it restarted it attempted to run a disk check. The disk check locked up and I had to press/hold the power button again. When it restarted I got a blue screen ~ stop: C0000218 unknown hard error.

Sometimes when I attempt to restart it I get: checking file system on C:
file system = NTFS

When I attempt to restart it in safe mode, safe mode with networking or starting in last known good configuration I get . . .

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\appPatch\drvmain.sdb
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\ . . . (various items)

Now it won't start, not even in safe mode. Everything I try ~ I just get a black screen.

** I just tried to restart AGAIN and it ran disk scan, said it had completed disk scan and would restart, the screen went black when it attempted to restart and the screen is still black and it won't restart.

What can I do to get my computer back?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Folks,

First time noob here, thanks in advance for your patience and expertise. It's been awhile, so if you need additional information, I'll be more than happy to get it for you in a timely manner. Again, thanks.

OMG! Some really peculiar things have been happening, in addition to your average no-boot situation. Here's the story:

First, some specs:

HP a1410n
Came with XP, upgraded to Win 7 (64 bit, I think?)
nVidia graphic card
Ram, I believe is 4 GB (I upgraded)
Processor: Athlon 64 (V) 3800+ 2.4 GHz
HD: 200 GB, I have an old one slaved in, and I have an external drive as well

A couple weeks ago (got discouraged and busy at the same time, so this is my first real attempt at fixing it), I was doing some things on the computer with my mom, when I unplugged the wireless keyboard from the USB. Big mistake, because I actually have done that before, and had to reboot, and baby it in order to get squared away and back to original running condition.

Anyway, as soon as I pulled that USB, the screen froze. Usually I just reboot, but this time, it didn't happen. So, I tried unplugging everything and doing the whole reboot thing, to no avail.

Today, I spoke with a friend, who suggested I do a disk boot. I had the disk and tried it.

The weirdest thing happened - first, the computer wouldn't recognize the keyboard (wired by now), and I unplugged, restarted, plugged in, restarted, etc. I was finally able to get to the "Boot from cd/dvd?" an... Read more

Hi,

CPU: Intel Core2 QUAD 9300
Motherboard: AsRock x48 TurboTwins
Ram: DDR2 2x 2GB, 800 GHz, brand Hynix
GPU: ATI HD 5770
PSU: Corsair 650 W
OS: Windows 7
Custom build

I installed Civilization 5 (and directX 9 as well because I was asked to during the installation). After few minutes of being in the game a blue screen popped up (I do not know what message was on there). I restarted the computer and system recommended to run the fix mode. I launched it and after a while I was advised to bring the settings back to the restore point. I acknowledged this but then all I saw was a black screen. Since then, after each restart the screen goes black. If I manage to go to BIOS after 5-10 seconds the screen goes black. I cannot even reinstall Windows.

Those 5-10 seconds in BIOS are enough to check the temperatures on CPU and MB: they are around 30 degrees Celsius so overheating is not the problem. I connected the monitor with my laptop and it works, so monitor is fine. There are no loose connections. There is no dust and debris - this system is 2 months old.

Problem might be in the graphics card. Several weeks ago the screen used to go grey after playing Fallout 3 for 10-15 minutes. I disabled the audio on the card and that solved the problem. However, Windows still indicated that there is something wrong with the GPU; on the other hand, drivers were up-to-date.

Can anyone help please? Or let me know what you think might be wrong.

Thanks.

A:The screen goes black after previous blue screen (even in BIOS)

Since you are having a graphics issue in both the BIOS startup screen and while Windows is open, it does sound like a graphics card problem and not a driver problem. Do you have another graphics card to substitute for test purposes?

Hello,

My computer is very likely to be infected with malware/virus because it seldom black screen with white words and then computer restarts for no reason. It blue screen'd once. A while ago, I ran Malwarebytes a few times and it detected PUP Files. Malwarebytes removed it each time but it kept coming back. But the last time I ran Malwarebytes, it did not show up again. Symantec Anti Virus could not detect anything. But the computer feels very unstable because the internet does not connect sometimes when the mobile devices have no problems connecting.

The laptop was given to me used, no original cd's or anything, just the machine and power cord, just letting you know that right off the bat as I don't have option to put cd in as I don't have it. The laptop has a XP sticker on it that doesn't state if it was home or Professional to start with. I say all this because I can't tell you if the OS was preinstalled or after market installation. IN case this matters any. I am not knowledgeable about computers without the aid or forums like this, so please know that when offering aid I'll need specifics please.

Recently, my system malfunctioned and YourHighness helped me get it cleaned up. It was working fine for a few days. All of a sudden the Windows Splash screen disappeared and the screen went black. After multiple reboots and selecting Function/F8 eventually the computer would go to a grey screen and then would finish booting fine. This went on for a week or two. Meanwhile, as YourHighness suggested, I bought more RAM as it only had 256MB. I read it can go up to a gig, so I bought (used from eBay) a 512 and installed it. Booted fine (after the black screen issue still) and worked fine. A couple of days later I went to boot it back up and got a blue screen saying "Stop: C0000221 Bad Image CheckSum. I would think that your first priority, assuming that your data is safe, is to obtain a means of reinstalling/repairing XP. I mean, that would be my first priority if I intended to run a system with XP on it and I did not believe that the system would run perfectly until I decided to retire/sell/junk it.

So my first suggestion would have been...contact Dell and inquire about recovery/restore CDs for your system.

As for your apparent option of taking it to a shop...that won't resolve the fact that you have no install disks of any type.

I've not ever seen an XP sticker that doesn't indicate which flavor of the O/S is installed.

Hello,

I was successfully using my PC for the entirety of this morning. After bumping my desk, the machine shut off as it sometimes does when a cable is loose. When the machine restarted, it allowed me to login and then showed me only a black screen and cursor. Ctrl+alt+del was functional. I tried system restore and system repair, both of which completed but did not have any effect. I was able to access Windows via safe mode. I removed my GPU and connected my monitor to my motherboard. The situation did not change. I attempted to boot without my main drive (SSD) by disconnecting it and turning the PC on. Instead of a login screen, I am now greeted by a flash of a BSOD before the system restarts. After running a couple rounds of startup repair, Windows has declared it cannot resolve the issue.

Any guidance will be warmly appreciated! Thank you!

Edit: after restarting once more, my bios prompted for a boot device and I was able to reach the login screen. I am now back at my original black screen problem.

Can you boot into Safe Mode at the moment? if so, follow this:

1. Download the DM Log Collector application to your desktop by clicking the link below

DM Log Collector.exe

2. Run it by double-clicking the icon on your desktop, and follow the prompts.
3. Locate the .ZIP file that is created on your desktop, and upload it here in your next reply.

Hello

I have a computer running Windows 7. Last night the computer was running fine. This morning when I turn it on, i get a black screen. To fix the problem I conducted a system restore. After it finished restoring, the computer restarts and everything worked fine. To make sure if everything was in working order, I restart it again. After the "Starting Windows" screens comes up, I get the Blue Screen of Death. I can't even read what the error says because the computer just restarts itself. I did not connect anything new to the computer. I performed a hardware diagnostics to see if it was a hardware failure but no error was found. I can't even get into safe mode. The SFC.exe will be my next step.

I read the posting instructions but it's a little difficult for me to run that program because my computer won't actually display anything. But here's what I can answer:

OS - Win 7 64bit

Original OS - Vista Home Premium October 2010

OS is retail upgrade

Hard Drive has been in use since October 2010, everything else is less than 48 hours old.

I haven't reinstalled the OS

CPU - Intel Core i7 2600k

Videocard - BFG nVidia GeFroce GTX280 1GB

MoBo - ASUS P8 H61-M

PSU - Corsair GS600 600 W (48A on 12v if that's relevant)

Corsair 8GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM (2x4GB)

Don't know about system manufacturer, they're different parts. The Case is by NZXT and the 1.0 TB HDD is by Seagate.

This is going to be a bit of a long read so I'll start off by giving the short version of all this.

Here's the short version:

I built this PC yesterday and it was working but couldn't 't display the native (1920 x 1080) resolution. I got "Out of Range" error on my monitor when I tried to change it to any other resolution. I installed an nVidia control program and made a custom resolution of 1920 x 1080. About half an hour later, I got a blue screen. Now when I start it up I just get a black screen, no error messages, just a black screen. It isn't just my own monitor, I've tried it with another fully functioning one too.
And more detail here:

It was all working alright when I first set it up but I couldn't get native resolution for my LG W2240 monitor (1920 x 1080) which displaye... Read more

A:Black screen after Blue Screen, no BIOS, no display

Can you boot into Safe Mode?
Does the system display the Asus splash screen before going to the black screen?

Have you checked to see if the video card has power (the extra power plugs in most cards these days)? Have you checked to make sure the fan is working, and that the video cooler isn't clogged up?

Have you tried another video card? I'd suspect that the video card or it's drivers are your issue. If the system boots into Safe Mode, then I'd suspect the drivers, if it doesn't boot into Safe Mode (so you can see the display) - then I'd have to assume that it's the video card.

See if you can return the video card. If not, then see if you can borrow one from another computer - or buy one that you can return if it's not needed.

Good luck!

Then after probably another 5 or 10, It will just completely lock up my computer then bring me to the blue screen. This has only started happening since i got Vista, Then I tried to see if getting windows 7 would fix it, But no...

Im pretty sure the problem is that these new operating systems are clashing with my drivers, All drivers are up to date, Hardrive checked, Video card working fine, RAM is all good.

My poor old Dell Latitude is having two issues:

1.  It's running unbearably slow for some reason.  It takes forever for programs to open, etc.

2.  It frequently black screens (then comes up with an error saying the display driver stopped working), and today just blue screened.  Before the blue screen went away and my comp restarted, I thought I caught something saying the display driver timed out or something.

I'm not sure where to look to see if I have a virus or something, but I have the free version of Avast and that's it.  And I'm not sure if I need to update some display driver, or where to do so.  Any takers?

I have (Toshiba Satelite)laptop with Win7 & IE9 that will have a boot up with black screen
occuring after startup. The black screen states PXE - E61 media test failure check cable and
PXE - MOF existing PXE ROM. Then the computer gets past this black screen and finishes booting up.
I will then experience a blue screen crash intermittently, seems to happen when on the internet,
but not sure. The blue screen has a full screen info that last 2 to 3 seconds and I'm unable to
read it all. It does state crash dump towards end of message. The computer will go blank then reboot on its own
showing black screen info again. Usually after this reboot things run somewhat ok, but somewhat slower. Have run
malware bytes, avast, super anti-spyware and c cleaner. Checked all updates and drivers with no help
from these. Any suggestions and is this something Mybleepingcomputer can fix?

Here is the rundown of what happened in sequence, maybe someone could help me.

1. When I started up my Toshiba laptop windows vista home premium 32-bit computer it booted until it got to the login screen. Then a c++ error popped up preventing me to login ( I have attatched the image of the error). I would have to click ok a few times for it to go away to login and I deleted the latest program I had on my computer which was a computer game. When i turned on my computer the following day it appeared again so uninstalling the game did not fix it.

2. This time I decided to restart it again but this time it went to a black screen before the login screen. So I restarted again in safe mode it would load the drivers and it would freeze before login on the black screen.

3. After restarting again I was prompted to do a system repair which I went ahead and did but my OS did not appear for the actual repair. After it was finished it said it could not fix the problem. So I restarted again and this time I decided to do a driver check and when the tests were done my computer went to the Blue screen of death then restarted.

Now it is just a pattern

4. Now I tried F8 to no avail, I have no vista disk. Maybe someone knows how to fix it. Get back to me as quick as you can.

Hello folks,

However, today I am coming as patient.

First of all I have to thank you ?geeks? (if allowed to name you like this ) for your dedication of helping people. Throughout the web you are an incredible source for fighting that plaque that take often our time (and sometime even more) away.

Now to my case. Some day ago my computer started with some strange behaviour like this:

After selecting the user (login) user desktop appears nicely (still OK) -> the quick-start icons in the right corner start to pop up one by one - > but in the middle after (10 seconds) black screen appears and nothing goes anymore.

So I started in save mode and run the scanners who discovered a truckload of Trojan and some root kit crap. I cleaned up but windows does not start up anymore (same behaviour as described above). In the ma... Read more

This works most of the time, however on a regular basis the screensaver will resume to the following screen and just stay there forever.

The only thing to do is to press the power button, at which point a popup alerts that a user is logged in, do you still want to shut down.

I was getting a blue screen (to fast to copy content) and then a black 'restart' screen.

After choosing the ' start normally ' option, it restarted, then a black screen came up stating that it could not boot ..to use a disk to
boot from.

I used the disk I made upon my first obtaining the computer and it did not work, just need to boot from disk message.

I took it to CompUSA for a diagnostic and they said that the hard drive was bad, so I bought a new 1Tb drive.
The next day the same thing happened as before.

I took it back to CompUSA. They told me that there was no OS on the hard drive and they refunded all costs and reloaded the OS (Windows Vista 32 Home Premium ) and when I took it home it worked fine for a week, and now it will blues screen and give me the
black recovery screen where I choose the 'start normally ' option.
It boots ok and seems to run ok as well.

It will not give me any problems if I keep it on, but if I shut it down and in the morning start it up it keeps giving me a blue screen with a recovery black screen with me choosing the ' start normally' option.

I have run all kinds of maleware checks and virus scans and nothing.
I have done a memory test and it says that my memory is good.
After reading all the 'BSOD' posts I can't find any similar problems or solutions to this problem.

All Windows Vista updates are done along with all updates from HP.
Sow how can I fix this?

It's my sis' previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:

Administrator
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
username1
username2

Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help quick, she uses it a lot. Thank anybody so much..

ok so last night (well early morning hours) my laptop started playing up (sony vaio) its screen went red while I was using it then it went back normal then about an hour later it went red again but this time it didn't go so shut down my laptop and started it up again but it was still red but this time there was so lines on the screen so I just turned off my laptop and went to sleep (3am) I was planning on telling my mum in the morning (without her killing me) so that she would take it into pc world and get it fixed but now I woke up (7.30am) and I turned on my laptop (I was praying at the same time lol) and bam it starts normal no red screen everything is fine I was thinking should I still take it into pc world and have them take a look or should I leave it? and also why did this happen? :s

A:Laptop screen went red and then went back normal? :s why?

I've had my desktop PC screen go red with a new AMD graphics card. In that case, it was a driver update and it was ok.

Maybe worth a shot...

I went to bed with some opera windows running, and MSN messenger turned on. When I woke up, even after turning on my moniter and going out of standby mode it stayed black. I rebooted, and it still stayed black. The monitor is on, the light is green, the black it gives me is a lighted black, not a monitor is off black. when I wait a while and type in my windows pass and hit enter it makes the logging in sound, but my screen is completely black.
I am running Win XP SP1.

I dont think it is a moniter problem because it turns on, goes green, and when I hit the menu buttons the menu pops up.
I am thinking of going and getting my HD wiped in hopes of it fixing the problem, but now that I know its a visual problem and not a botting problem Im not sure.
Any help'd be appreciated.

My computer was disconnected from its powersource. I've reconnected it and booted it up. Now my screen is shortened, with the bottom toolbar-the one showing Start, the time of day, etc. one inch higher up on the screen than it should be, leaving the bottom of the screen black. I've tried to stretch the screen back down unsuccessfully. What next? Thank you!

A:stretch screen back to normal size

Just for ther record is this a laptop or a desktop, CRT or LCD screen?

What controls are there on the monitor itself for setting the screen to the right dimensions -- and what effect do they have?

I don't think it's a display resolution problem -- but you can check to see in Display properties if the resolution is what you are used to.

You can also try doing a System Restore which would restore any Windows settings which were lost.

Start > run: msconfig > Launch System Restore and choose a date prior to the problem. These can be undone if not helpful.

If it is a desktop and the above doesn't help -- I would shutdown, disconnect the monitor from both the computer and its power source and then hold down the "power button" on the monitor for about 20 seconds. You might even want to let it sit around for a while to ensure any residual voltages stored internally on it are discharged. Then try reconnecting it.

Hi people,

OK, I get the dreaded black screen every time I try to boot up in normal mode. A quick summary of what happened before I re-booted & saw the black screen...

I had a few Firefox windows open, then suddenly, the Firefox windows basically froze up. I could move my cursor, but it wouldn't acknowledge any links, meaning I couldn't click on anything. The windows themselves wouldn't move either, just frozen in place

I then re-booted. At first my "Start" & the normal icons on the taskbar (or whatever you call it) were usable, but the desktop wouldn't appear, just a black screen. I re-booted again & that time I couldn't use my "Start" or any icons , as the cursor simply makes a circle motion, not allowing me to click on anything there. It's been doing that now every time I try to boot up, black screen, cursor circling

I can get to my desktop in Safe Mode. Everything seems to work in that mode. I've read numerous accounts of people having the same problems on other forums, but the causes & fixes seem to be in the thousands

Does anyone here know about this & have any advice/fixes?

Thank you in advance for any help

A:Black Screen In Normal Mode

First thing I would do, is make sure it is not Malware related. I have worked on several machines that had similar problems and was cleared up once I cleaned all the malware off.

Try starting a new topic in the Am I Infected forum, and after they help you out, and if you still have the same problem, then we can go from there...

For some reason every shortcut on my desktop opens up to a mini screen size. In other words, I can see most of my wallpaper behind it and the page doesn't fill the screen like it should. I have done this before and I don't remember exactly how I brought things back to normal. I can manually adjust the page by dragging the double-sided arrows to the top and the bottom of my frame, but this is only a temporary fix. I can't get it to stay in the size it needs to be. Once I make one page the right size, I can continue opening up more tabs with new pages and they all come up normal (like the first page I opened and manually fixed). However, once I close them up they no longer come back in the correct size. What is the trick?

Not sure if it was best to post here on the Laptop support or on the Windows 7 portion. If this is the wrong spot, I apologize. I wasn't sure if this was something to do with having windows 7 or hardware or such.

This will sound confusing, so I will try to describe as best as I can. First, to show what kind of laptop computer I have.

Windows 7 Home Premium
Dell Inspiron 1545
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4400 @ 2.20 GHz 2.20
Installed Memory: 4.00 GB
System Type: 64-bit Operating System

So, I'm not sure how to describe it. For example, right now I can do anything on my computer fine. Go watch videos on youtube, go to websites (yahoo, google, etc.), check my email, etc.

But, once in a blue moon (very random) it's like my screen stops and it goes Extremely Bright...like it Brightens up (and you can see faint vertical lines) and then stays for a few seconds...and then it goes back to normal...and when I say random I DO mean random. Sometimes it happens once and then nothing for the rest of the night. Or the next day, say if I have the computer on for 5 hours, it does it maybe 2 or 3 times at most during that time period.

I'm just not sure what is going on. My computer is starting fine. I checked my Task Manager and so far it seems programs are running fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Even right now (for the past hour) it only did that once. And no there are currently no vertical lines, nothing at all. And either it won't happen at all tonight, or it coul... Read more

A:Question regarding screen that randomly goes bright but then back to normal...

Try plugging the laptop into a external monitor, to switch the display to the monitor press the FN F4 keys, see if the issue still happens.

It could be one of three things, inverter board, backlight, or GPU chip. The external monitor will rule out the GPU, also check if there are any updated drivers for the Graphics.

Sounds like your monitor or your grafic caed is playing up.

I would delete monitor driver and reboot. If that doesnt help reinstal gafics card driver.

Edit- try a different monitor.

I'll go into my office and find that it's still on, but I have nothing showing up on my screen and I have to restart. lets see if i can give the right info...

Im using Vista Home Premium, i dont think i have any service packs installed. i bought the PC as an open box way long ago, so im still running the OS that was on it while it was the in store as a model. I have a few system restore disks but my CD-ROM broke recently, so anything that has to do with CDs is out of the question.

I havent installed anything latley and after a virus scan everything checked out well.

As for the problem, i turned off my PC for the night, got up and where the usual Vista logo would appear, instead it goes directly to a black screen with my mouse pointer in the middle, which i can move around freely.

I cant do anything else at all here, no key commands work or anything.

i tried different boot options, all safe mode options are the same as the problem above, restart with last working config didnt work, the only thing that worked was Windows Kernel Debug Mode. It gets me in to windows like normal, but a few main programs i use seem to not work in this mode.

If anyone can give me any help to run in normal mode any help would be great. Thanks.

A:[SOLVED] Black screen instead of normal windows.

I dont see an edit or delete post option for the above post, so ill just have to say nevermind, i fixed the problem by getting rid of a few unnecessary things in the startup list that seemed to be causing the problem.

Hello,
I have a HP dv6-1107ax laptop with a AMD Turion x2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-74, 4 GB DDR2 1600Mhz, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650.
Today when I booted up the laptop, after I put in my password. Few minutes later a Blue Screen pops up, and then my Laptop restarted. During the boot up (after the Blue Screen), the BIOS shows that no Boot-up or Start up files was on my hard drive, and this error code pops up (03F0). I decided to hold the Turn off button, to turn it off. Few hours later, I returned to my Laptop to try again, but this time, there was no error code from the BIOS, and that after I put in my password it booted successfully.
My question is, what was the problem? how do I fix it to Prevent Future problems?
I will attach the Event Viewer Logs that happened today, if that helps.

Basically, when i'm surfing the internet or playing a game. My computer screen freezes which then results in me 'Ctrl+Alt+Delete'ing which then makes the screen black out and then brings it back to its normal state.
I was wondering if its due to an overload in my Hard-drive(90% full) or the fact i have a low amount of RAM. Any advice given into what to do is very much appreciated. My spec is below;

Intel Pentium 4
Motherboard - ASUSTeK P4S800
RAM - 512mb
Graphics Card - Geforce 6800XT 256mb
80gb Hard-drive

A:Computer screen freezes, blacks out and then returns back to normal

Clean the hard drive of important data and only run what you need. An 80GB drive should be plenty if you watch what you are storing on it. Videos and games take up a lot of hard drive space. I run 2 drives. A 400GB and a 250GB. Bump your memory to 1GB

My screen turn Black and never go back. Only with restart the black screen is going normal again. What should I do here?Thank you

A:IdeaPad 500S - Black Screen During Normal Work

Hi Yanov,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

A number of things can cause your screen to be blank. A suddenly black screen accompanied by what appears to be a completely unresponsive computer is, most often, a symptom that your computer has crashed.

And the most common cause of crashes is overheating

Your computer needs good ventilation to avoid overheating. Make certain that the ventilation holes aren?t blocked by dust or other debris. It can be due to running a CPU-intensive program or game continuously for a long time. If the latter is the case, you may need to take steps to provide extra ventilation, or cool the air flowing around or through your computer.

The graphics or video card can go bad, which may cause a blank screen.

Problems with the motherboard can cause a computer screen to go blank, as can a hard disk crash.

Try doing these things:

If your screen still doesn?t light up after cooling it down, connect your computer to a different power outlet and reboot the computer. If you have an extra monitor lying around at home, switch it with the current one to see if your monitor is bad.

If you recently made changes to the computer?s hardware, uninstall what was just added and restore the system. If this still doesn?t get your screen to work, try restarting it in safe mode. This can be done by pressing F8 once the computer begins to boot up. Select safe mode by using the arrow keys. This will bring t... Read more

Hello,

I have a ThinkPad Edge E430, 64bit Windows 7 computer that is under warranty. Upon normal startup, I am able to load Windows 7 and get to the user login screen. After logging in, I get a black screen and can see the mouse cursor but no applications ever load. I think there is a problem that is preventing windows explorer from loading.

I'm not sure if this is related, but a few days before this started happening I received a Windows Action Center notice that the small.CA virus was detected on my computer. I ran Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, McAfee Virus Scan, and Emisoft Emergency Scanner, but none of them turned up any problems.

I'm able to run my computer through Windows safe mode with networking at the moment normally.

Do you know if this is a software problem and if so is it fixable? If it's a hardware problem, my computer is under warranty and I can send it back.

Thanks,
XSJ

Hi,

I have bought a Toshiba Equium L-40 17-M laptop 3 years ago.

As I turn on the laptop with the adapter. it turns on, as I hear the sound. But the LCD is black. When I disconnect the power (adapter) and use the battery, and press the ON button , the laptop works fine.

I dont know why the laptop does not work in the normal mode, when the adapter (power) is connected?

Although it does work fine in safe-mode, irrespective of whether turned on with the adapter or battery. The laptop is useless if does not work with windows start up in normal mode, when the adapter is plugged in.

Any help in this regard will be appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Toshiba L40 17-M LCD screen turns black in Normal mode

Hi Sadiq, welcome to VF, I have came across this issue a few times and the solution may sound a little strange, may I recommend doing a full anti-virus scan just as a precaution.

First of all, unplug the notebook and take out the battery by using the slider underneath, keep the power cord out and hold the power button for around 30 seconds(we are draining the power out of the notebook at this stage), put the battery back in, and plug in the power cord turn it back on and it should *fingers crossed* work normally

The reason the screen boots up blank is because there is too much power in the laptop and it's natural reaction is to turn off to save the components from imminent death, doing this drains that extra build up of power and restores it to normal operating parameters.
