Windows 7 new PC sales have only one year left

Q: Windows 7 new PC sales have only one year left

This just in from ZDnet by Ed Bott, that MSFT will cease to allow new machines to be sold with Win7 on them.  I've not read the article yet, but it should be self explanatory.  So do your shopping now. That's what I'm going to do.  Now.

Ironically, I just now uploaded three videos showing what business laptops are being sold by Lenovo, Dell, HP to prove that they aren't selling Win10 machines.  They are using Win8.1 licenses' downgrade rights to sell Win7.  The videos are updates on the ones I did back at the beginning of September, to see if the September results were still valid.

You can see the videos here (Dell), here (HP) and here (Lenovo, but the video shows the Win7 machines sold out);  vids were made 10/26 and at least Dell has radically changed its website interface now.  The videos are boring, though.  Better to just go to the websites, instead.

The Dell machines shown in the video are mostly gone, now; or, the website redesign makes it look that way.  The machines shown in the video are now (right now, this minute) showing as only available preconfigured in Win7Pro 64 or Win10.  When just now I did a mock purchase, those were the only options:  not, Win8.  You'll find more Win8 machines available on HP.

Thank you for your time.  So much of my life would be so much worse, were it not for BC.  I hope to 'give back'.  Thank you again.

A: Windows 7 new PC sales have only one year left

I was talking to a tech at Eset while  he was fixing my computer and He told me that Microsoft was not going to give updates to win 7 much longer. Hope that he is wrong.

i have about seven years of data i need to graph out. but it is very simple data.

i need something which will plot out how many widgets i have sold per day, per month, per year in a way that i can compare each year against eachother. basically the same way that some webservers counts how many hits you have had each day, and records those for webmasters to view at their leisure based on day, month, or year. but then i want to be able to take each year and basically compare them to eachother, not necessarilly on the same chart (tho that would be nice), but at least on the same page.

i want to be able to plot out 365/6 days with the corresponding number of widgets sold. and as if that wasn't enough, i want to be able to tell which days were sundays. if the full year isn't doable, i want to at least be able to do a full month.

Freeware would be fantabulous, but if the program is worth it, i think i could swing some money to buy something.

any ideas?

I've tried datediff, dateserial, dateadd but can't seem to get it right. Can some kind soul give me a hand here?

A:(Resolved) Compare this month's sales to this month last year

I figured it out. Had to use "between". I was trying to just hone in on a particular month last year but I guess that was the lazy way out. Anyway, here's what I ended up with to compare May 02 to May 03:

Between DateSerial(Year(Date())-1,Month(Date())-1,1) And DateSerial(Year(Date())-1,Month(Date()),1)-1

I have a pivot table that gives me sales by each division over a period of time. When I do the pivot chart I can just pull the divisions over into my field list and show "Average Sales". This is for the whold company. This is great but what I would like to have is a line chart showing the sales of each of the division AND also show the Average sales of all divisions within same chart.

I can't figure out how to do it.

If you know I would be thrilled.

Thanks,
Charles

A:This will help Windows 7 sales as the costs will be comparable.

I don't see it having any effect. So many people are quick to jump on Windows 8 for things like this, forgetting that all previous versions of Windows had the same progression. Upgrades were offered cheap to spur on the sales. This is business as usual.

If you?re not a big fan of Windows 10 and planning to purchase a new computer, you'd better hurry up because this month both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 reach their end-of-sales deadlines.

October 31 is the last day when you are able to purchase a new computer running any of the two operating systems, with Microsoft to then focus exclusively on Windows 10 for new configurations.

But even though both Windows 7 and 8.1 are reaching their end-of-sales dates this month, this doesn?t necessarily mean that PCs that come with these versions pre-installed will disappear all of a sudden. Microsoft will still allow sales of devices that were in stock before the deadline, but no new units would be shipped starting November 1.

Windows 10, the only version pre-installed on new PCs
Moreover, what?s important to note is that this deadline only refers to sales and has nothing to do with updates. Both Windows 7 and 8.1 will continue to receive updates until January 2020 and January 2023, respectively.

?End of sales refers to the date when a particular version of Windows is no longer shipped to retailers or Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Examples of OEMS are Dell and Toshiba - PC manufacturers who often preinstall Windows software,? Microsoft explains.

?Note that when the retail software product reaches its end of sales date, it can still be purchased through OEMs (the company tha... Read more

I saw this article over at Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows. I've been following Paul for several months now on the Windows Weekly podcast on Twit. He has been cautiously optimistic about Windows 8, but recently has taken a gloomier stance. He made no secret of his disdain for Steve Sinofsky on the podcast this week.

Here is the link: http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/wi...lame-go-around

Surprised no one commented on this article. I personally have had high hopes for Windows 8 and would love to think Paul's pessimism is misplaced...

A:Windows 8 Sales Well Below Projections, Plenty of Blame

good article, most of it makes sense

I think Microsoft hyped windows 8 a little too much as being the next best thing, it really is just a tweak along the way from windows 7 to windows 9.

I do not know where to post this or how to post news updates but I wanted to say here and now that IT IS TRUE! And just as I thought, Microsoft was padding the n umbers for the ammount of sales of new Windows 8 machines and software. Not many people as they hoped were buying the systems or new software since its launch. It was also reported that the new Xbox will be released next fall in time for the Christmas Shopping season with a pricetag of between USD199-299.

I just remembered this article and thought of here at the time, I do not know where the article is though now, since I just remembered it I have no idea what the actual article title even was.

If anyone else has a confirming or otherwise to make it more then just a article that I just remembered {and maybe provide a link} thanks much

NOTE: I did not know hwere to put this and figured since it concerned Windows 8 the most I figured it'd fit in the Windows 8 folder, if it is in the wrong place I understand

A:NEWS FLASH: Windows 8 Sales failing

The Xbox thing comes from a Bloomberg news article and is dubious given the time tables. Microsoft doesn't want a repeat of the commercial failure of the 360. By failure I mean, rush out a system with low QA, then spend billions fixing the issue and providing warranty service. Unless Microsoft suddenly announces the next Xbox within the next few months, I would give credence to that rumor, but until something is announced, I'm going to be skeptical. It is certainly possible they will announce the new Xbox soon and attempt to meet the holiday 2013 season. This is an article talking about it.As for the Windows 8 launch numbers, this article is as close as I could get.

Hi, I'm new to this site and couldn't find a topic that covered my enquiry. I have been approached via cold calling tele sales from three different companies claiming to be authorised MS Windows certified technicians. They tell me my warranty has expired and I need to take out a contract with them to prevent my computer from slowing down (which it is not doing) - they get you to look at a warnings list which looks horrendous with several red warnings. But are they real? The seem to offer support for anthing from ?35 for 6 months up to ?300 for 4 years support. Are these just scams and if so why do we get no warnings about them?

Anyone else had dealings with these firms?

A:Tele Sales offering support for Windows 7

Probably total b-s. What do they mean by warranty has expired. On what? Windows 7 just came out.why do we get no warnings about them?Maybe because it is a new enough scam that it hasn't been picked up. Does the UK have something similar to the Better Business Bureau where you could check?

I'm drooling with anticipation to hear what the official comments are from the big OEMs regarding Windows 8 and how it will be affecting their sales of PCs laptops and desktops, and the avalanche of complaints they will have when customers receive their new OEM PCs.

Anyone working for HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Toshiba, ect that can give us insight into how these companies are reacting and gearing up for Windows 8?.

Honestly I wonder if some of the OEMs will simply continue to offer the option of Windows 7 until MS no longer supports it. I have a feeling that we WILL be seeing this angle from the more business oriented OEMs like HP, Lenovo, and Dell.

A:What are the OEMs official stance on how Windows 8 will affect sales?

I don't work for any of them, but I will offer some speculation to the mix. They are pumped and ready. Even LONG before a release of Windows 8 was announced for beta testing and development, Intel, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, and AMD were already building chips just for Windows 8 tablets. It's rumored that by the release of Windows 8 or at least November, there should be at LEAST 30 different tablet offerings running 8. I think Intel will be the main supplier of those chips as well. There is already huge speculation with the Surface tablet, although Acer poshes it. Speaking the business end, HP won't be offering a WinRT tablet and will be sticking with the traditional Windows to please their business partners, they're building tablets for Windows 8. One of their business oriented tablets already has some leaked pictures of it, as does a Dell tablet. Even at the recent PC expo this summer, ASUS, Acer, Samsung and other OEMs showed off their PCs running Windows 8. I would think there is a resounding tone of support and oomph for Windows 8 in the tablet space as well as the tradition PC space.

Although I would LOVE to hear from an insider as well...

I found a post on this exact topic from back in 2010. I am trying to incorporate the code into my database and am not able to get the code to work if I make any changes. Here is the link to the previous thread: http://forums.techguy.org/business-...increment-field-including-year-restart-2.html

I have also uploaded the database that was provided in the last post. If I try to change the field and object names I appear to be unsuccessful in having the code still work even when I change the items in the code as well. I woud like some help. I would like for there to be a field called "RequestDate" that has the date stamp that is keyed in by the user. Then after that is keyed in on the form the "AssignmentID" field is updated to the new assignment number. The "RequestDate"="Admit_Date" and "AssignmentID"="ActualFWCNumber". I am trying to do this in Access 2010. If I make changes either the number field doesn't autopopulate or the same number keeps repeating. Any and all assistance on this would be great.

Hi,
I've read every post I could find on this so I'm sorry to ask another dumb question but here goes.

I created an access database (volunteer work) which has an autoincrement field to issue numbers to animals taken in at our shelter. My 'boss' (also a volunteer) wants this simple autoincrement changed to a value which begins with the two digit year and then has 4 digits, starting with 0001 which will increment sequentially and restart at 0001 with the new calendar year. Therefore, records will start with 10-0001, 10-0002, etc for this year and 11-0001, 11-0002 for next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

current vba code is:-
ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \2012"
Range("c57:h102").ExportAsFixedFormat Type:=xlTypePDF, Filename:=composedfn & ".pdf"
Is there a way to save to ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \ currentyear
without having to change the vba integer value to each new year? or using if statements for each year? So when the 1st of jan comes it automatically save to the new current year directory and if possible creates a directory at the start of each new year as well?

A:Solved: Save PDF to a year directory each new year or month

If folder exist....

' Does this directory exist? If not, create it.
If objFSO.FolderExists(strParentPath) = False Then
Set newFolder = objFSO.CreateFolder(strParentPath)
Wscript.Echo "Put a ocr fold here" &
Else
'Save it here code'
End If

This will get you the year
CurrentDate = Date
File_Year = DatePart("yyyy",CurrentDate)

You should be able to code it with this info

I have an installation folder on my main machine(Windows 7) with all my software. I have repeatedly run into issues connecting odd devices to my shared folder. This time I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview (on a different machine) and don't understand why it tells me I can't access my own machine. After all these years, you would think user friendly would be a reality. It seems to be a coin toss as to which machines will connect. I hate never knowing I can access my own machine without issue. Here I am trying to install applications but yet I can't get to my storage location.

What is the secret to sharing your machine, so that anyone on the same network can access shared folders?

Edit: I always turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and Print Sharing".

A:Network connection issues (year after year)

I'm more brutal via the firewall:

set trust localhost and your lan ip's, eg 192.168.0.1/24

then add two rules for only the PRIVATE PROFILE

inbound allow tcp/udp from 192.168.0.1/24 to any for ports 137-139,445
outbound allow tcp/udp from any to 192.168.0.1/24 for ports 137-139,445
I use a much more complicate scheme in reality to enforce known vs unknown devices and to segregate WiFI from wired access, but that's just me.

In services, ensure these are running

Bonjour Service ( mDNSResponder)
fdPHost
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness

A:Do I have to pay for windows 10 after one year of use?

No. It doesn't mean it's free only for 1 year. It means that you have 1 year to claim your free copy. You can do the upgrade now or later but if you do it after 29 July 2016 you'll have to buy it so take your time and decide if you want it now. It's not the bad idea to wait 2-3 months while they fix some bugs etc.

So I bought a used PC which had Windows 7 Ultimate about a year ago. It's a somewhat old desktop PC, 4GB RAM, average stuff, nothing extraordinary but not a dinosaur either. A couple days ago a message started popping up saying I needed to validate my Windows; quite odd since I'd been using the computer for a year already. Anyways, I downloaded the program suggested by the message, and it said Microsoft couldn't complete the validation process. I should also mention that I want to upgrade to Windows 10 but don't have any of the required updates, which also don't appear on W. Update.
I downloaded the MGADiag thing, if it's any use. If my Windows turns out to be invalid, what can I do? Will I still be able to download Win 10?

I have windows XP media edition on a Gateway 510XL 3.2 mhz machine. My AVG was expiring so I decided to try another program. I got McAfee security suite and installed it on my system. I had problems on the install (conflict with ad-aware plus) and tried to reinstall. Before reinstall I picked up a bug that automatically resets my home page to http://www.new114.com.cn:8080/ every time I reboot.

I installed McAfee and my system ran very slow and the date was reset to 1970 and cannot be changed. I removed McAfee and now the date is fixed at 1990. Is this progress?

Checked the BIOs and it had the same year.

Rechecked the BIOs date was 4/09/1990

Replaced battery, no change BIOs date is 4/10/1990
reset the BIOS date to 4/09/2007
saved and started reboot
reentered BIOS F2 on the bootup date was 4/09/2007
at XP Welcome screen selected "administrator"
date error message appeared
The Windows start up sound (tones) stops half way through
Check Processes running
there is a Nortons.exe that has to be deleted before the boot will complete fully
there are also some unknown processes running that would give me alerts when I had the McAfee security system installed that they were trying to access the internet.
8CF2A84.exe
931EFC53.exe
CC1C4099.exe
there are two others but they disappear quickly
These are listed as "administrator" files

Time appears to be correct at 22:51
replaced battery no change
rebooted - changed bios date remained 4-10-1990

A:Windows year will not reset

Sounds like you should try a new battery. If that solves the date/time problem, then run an HJT scan and put it in the Security forum for analysis.

Windows XP the third-most popular OS after 15 years
It seems crazy to think that there are people out there using a 15-year-old operating system, but it’s happening. In fact, so many people are still running Windows XP right now that it is currently the third-most popular OS in use.
Microsoft actually stopped supporting Windows XP two years ago, which means the platform no longer sees updates of any kind — not even critical security patches. What’s more, even third-party developers like Google have stopped supporting it.
Despite all this, Windows XP’s 10.9 percent share of the market means it has a larger install base than Apple’s latest OS X El Capitan software (4.05 percent), and Windows 8.1 (9.56 percent). Windows 10 just about beats it with 14.15 percent...
Windows 7 still reigns king, with a whopping 51.89 percent share of the user base.
http://www.technobuffalo.com/2016/04/08/windows-xp-the-third-most-popular-os-after-15-years/
====================================
Remark:   This is NOT surprising.   Windows XP was a very "solid" OS... especially in comparison to its predecessor (Win ME) and successor (Vista).   It worked very well, and people liked it.   And let's face it:  people don't throw away "appliances" [be it a computer, microwave, refrigerator, and especially a car] just because its warrantee period has expired.
So okay, a computer is not a car. &nbs... Read more

A:15 year-old Windows XP the 3rd-most popular OS

Yep...totally agree. A much more intuitive interface and a much simpler format and layout. You could find where to go and how to get stuff done without having to conduct a self directed search wondering where everything was changed to or hidden. Vista wasn't so bad and has worked well on my old XPS-420 but Windows 7 started the veer toward the dark side. If this machine fails I am going shopping for a rehabbed Dell with Winndows 7. Have no need or desire to have a screen full of tiles that I have to swipe.
I did some temp work a few years ago for a major health insurance company as they were ramping up for ACA. The OS they were upgrading from was DOS! That was an interesting experience, to say the least. Had so many programs open we had to use two monitors.

"Microsoft has announced that its next operating system will be offered as a free upgrade to owners of devices running Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Phone.

The announcement marks a change in strategy to its previous policy of charging for major updates.

The offer, which is limited to the OS's first year of release, may aid its adoption."

Hi I am sure I am not alone, but I honestly have my machine on literally 20 hours a day non stop working away. Its my work horse especially since I work online running a business.

Anyways - I am noticing a few things going a bit wrong like chkdsk.exe not working and a few other issues.

WOuld you suggest that it is a good thing to re-install a clean version of windows 7 from a previous image you made or is that a waste of time?

I mean, if my image backup has missing and corrupt registry items then I guess whats the point?

Thoughts please!

PS I wouldn't be able to re-build the system I have since there are way too many tweaks and setings to re-do, but I think that I have some issues.....

Maybe I should re-install the registry?

A:Should you re-install Windows every year?

I do mine every 6 months. Just to make sure it's clean.

With your drivers, files, and program installers organised. It's a 2 hour investment every 6 months. And Having a clean image with no updates or programs installed helps.

Why not?

Hello Every one, well today I booted to into windows 7 and it just Crashed, (weird I know ) so I tried several reboot attempt, and it would get to the windows LOGO and just crash, i was unable to get the Error code.it went by to fast

I then tried to do a repair, no luck, then tried to do a image restore ( have done a few in the past and they worked ) and the restore image was unable to restore, ( SSD drive was in use-Message )

So i tried to boot just from the SSD itself and said that the MBR was missing ( my first clue something is bad

So i tried to boot in safe mode.. i was able to boot into safe mode

so i just said let me bite the bullet and do a clean install of windows 7, I needed to do one anyways
And i could not do a Clean install of Windows 7( windows cannot be installed on this DISK.)

maybe some of my previous problems have finally come back to bite me

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install:

Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here. I would use a fresh ISO written with tool in Step 2 as yours is in question.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

The other day I was on Ebay and suddenly a Sears ad began playing on my computer. I didn't have any way to look at the ad or stop it. Some ad also came on in the middle of the night when my computer lid was shut down. Is this normal? I usually don't the sound on but is that the only way to silence the pop up sound ads? Thanks, Micromos

A:Sales sound ads

Well by default, most laptops will go into sleep or hibernation when the lid is closed, so unless you have changed that behavior that should not be possible.
Also when an ad starts playing and you cannot seem to find it, use the ALT+ Tab keys to scroll through all the open windows interfaces until you find it, then force it close; if you don't it might refresh at some point and play again. My recommendation is that when you are not going to be using the laptop for awhile, lock the screen before closing the lid and when you are done for the day, just sign out, that will close any open connections.

Well, I failed to follow one of the primary rules of downloading (check and double-check the dialog windows before clicking OK or Accept) and now I have the Sales Charger malware/adware. I have seen some posts where people have had to go through some pretty extreme efforts to rid themselves of this infection.

So here I am looking to the experts to help me out. I have a custom machine running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit, AMD Phenom 9750, ASUS M58 mobo, 4 GB DDR2. I use Avast, CCleaner and Malwarebytes and have downloaded the latest versions of aswMBR, combofix, FRST, TDSSkiller, adwClean, JRT and rkill, so I think I am armed and ready for battle.

From what I have read, it seems I am getting redirects, unsolicited search results, and pop-ups typical of the Sales Charger malware. So where do I start? I have only used the Avast malicious add-on tool when it pops up, but this only helps for the current session and not completely.

Any takers?

I was doing some browsing a few days ago. Then I started getting pop ups even though I use the pop up program from endpopups. I reinstalled it and seconds later.. pop ups again. Then I checked the startup and I noticed a odd program with just 4 random letters and numbers. I removed and restarted and it would come back. I ran ad aware, spy ware, spy doctor, and hijack this. I removed what came up and it still kept poping up and trying to open a random window.

At this point I realized all the pop ups that were coming up are saying the same thing. Talking about stopping ad ware and viruses from messing up my system. Nothing else but pop ups like that.

At this point I just simply do a system restore back 4 days prior. Everything is cool at this point. About a day later it starts happening again. I immediately delete all of the new sites that I had recently ventured to so I won't go back to them. Then I look up the files that keep adding themselves to my startup. They are all 62 kbs in size and all in the windows and windows system32 folder. I go in and manually delete about 20 or so of them. It took a long time to make sure I get them all. I had to do this in safe mode. Then after I restarted, to my surprise here comes the windows trying to open on their own and a new program on my startup again. Another 62kb program!!! What the hell????

Giving up I decide to perform another system restore and Haha to my surprise all of my restore dates are gone. They are gone!

If this is in the wrong place, please advise as to where I should post it. I have a T440p. It was delivered without the illuminated keyboard. I ordered a backlit keyboard from an online retailer. The installation was simple, it works, but it does not feel as good as the OEM keyboard. I left an inquiry on the Mexican Lenovo site (http://www.lenovo.com/mx/es/) over a week ago. No response. I have had very satisfactory interactions with Lenovo.com in the US, but the Lenovo operation in Mexico is terrrible and has been nothing but a series of complete disappointments, including a 6 month interlude of failed repairs on a T61p, an incorrect screen installed on my T520 and now this lack of response to a request using their web form. I'm not asking advice. I'm just posting this as a complaint and point of information. The Mexican Lenovo operation is a mess.

Dear tech support,

(Since this is my first post here, I hope it is in the right forum. My apologies if it isn't!)

The title pretty much describes the question I'm asking myself right now. I just noticed that all files, folders and software from the last year are missing. The most recent data is from May 2nd and onwarts (just the things I did on my pc since then), anything before that date is gone until april 2012. So basically there is a 1-year gap from which all data seems to have been removed.

More curiously: files, folders and software I have deleted in the past, are now back in the place they once were. This leads to me think that, somehow, my pc has performed/suffered a rollback of about a year after the Windows updates from May 2nd.

The whole thing puzzles me completely, never have I experienced something like this. Googling for information didn't help much either, nowhere could I find a similar story. Contacting the online Windows support chat resulted in a constant 'no employees are available', hence I decided to raise my question here.

Basically I want to ask you: do you have any idea what has happened and/or what to do about it? I am just clueless.

Some additional information:
- I am running Windows 7 Home Premium service pack 1
- My PC is about 5 years old, the oldest data dates back to 2008 and 2009. As mentioned, the old data is still present, it's just the most recent year or so that's gone
- The problem seems to have started after a large Windows update ... Read more

A:Did windows perform a 1-year rollback, by itself?

Windows restore from a recovery point does not affect user data only Windows system files. Even if you rolled back to a point that was a year old the user data would stay. It sounds more like a backup was restored but without user intervention I don't see how that would happen.

What do you use, if anything, for backup?

I built this computer about a year ago and installed a legit upgrade copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (installed a friend's copy of Windows 7 just to get through the upgrade process). I've had no problems with the OS until a few days ago when I noticed one of my USB devices turned off (a PS3 controller configured with MotionJoy). Then I noticed Windows came up with several notices claiming it wasn't genuine. It was displayed in popups and in the bottom right-hand corner of my desktop.

Apparently, Microsoft Security Essentials triggered it. This wasn't the first time I've had to deal with a validation issue in a Windows PC. I usually just had to run the validation tool and be done with it. However, when I ran the tool this time, it simply took me to a screen where I could buy a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (or a new activation key?) to resolve missing security files. Obviously I'm not going to do that, but I'm running out of options other than perhaps running the Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade installer again and hoping that it returns Windows to default.

As it stands, I've tried reactivating, but it gives me an error message. I've tried running Windows Update because it seems that it stopped updating on the 21st, and that's when the latest security pack was installed. However, I get a code C0000022 error whenever I try to update. Should I just redo my upgrade installation or is there some other way to fix this? I'd appreciate a... Read more

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately the BBC news left out the fine print shown on Windows 10 page on Microsoft's site here. Quoted: ?It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer terms in coming months.?Also quoted is the need to sign up for email for the upgrade offer using your Microsoft account.i_Xp/Vista/W7Usermessage edited by XpUser

I have a Dell Inspiron 1300 running on Windows XP. It always says the year is 2005. The month and the day are correct, just not the year, and the time is always a few minutes off.

Every time you try to adjust it in the Date/Time section and click apply, it immediately goes back to 2005.

I have also gone into BIOS and changed it there, but when I exit BIOS and the computer starts, the year is always back to 2005.

I have done every diagnostic scan Dell told me to do several times and the hardware says it's fine. I even replaced my battery for good measure.

It occurred to me the notebook could still serve as a nice platform for testing programs, rather than risk my workhorse desktop - also running Win 7. Then I realized that absolutely no updates to Windows or to programs had been made in almost 2 years. (Don't try this at home!) So I fired it up, and rolled up my sleeves.First stop was Windows Update, to see what I had missed. The search for updates took all night. Turns out there were only about 90 Important and 40 optional updates listed, totaling almost half a GB, waiting for download. Included were 15-20 of those pesky .Net Framework updates. Yikes! Where to begin? So I selected the one at the top - a Cumulative Update for IE 11, published in Aug/2016 - as a reasonable one to test first. It got hung up at 5% into the download, and timed out. Back to the desktop, where things had slowed down to a crawl. Task Manager showed that svchost.exe was hogging between 50-100% of the CPU. Great, there are only about a dozen processes that use svchost. But one of those services is for  Windows Updater, which was running under manual mode. But stopping that service didn't seem to speed things up in general.Since system slowdowns can be caused by malware spoofing ... Read more

A:Windows Updates after a 1.5 Year Hiatus

I make it a point to turn on all my home PCs at least monthly --- specifically, for the sake of Windows Updates.   I'll typically also run Secunia's PSI, to help upgrade any other programs (typically browsers) I have on these systems.
Win7 (laptop, but which I use as if it were a desktop) is my primary system, my workhorse, for all daily chores.   Surprising, WinXP (laptop) is my secondary system... I keep it in the bedroom, so I don't have to carry my Win7 around the house.   I'm amazed how much can still be done on an XP system... especially since I downloaded and started using avast's SafeZone browser.   I also have an 8.1 tablet, which I use occasionally, but find its onscreen keyboard inconvenient when I wish to do a lot of typing [and this explains why my WinXP retains its secondary position in my household].

Hello community. Me and my wife, have a PC with Win8.1 installed. The thing is that the constant requirement of entering user passwords everything we switch is very annoying.

Is there anyway to bypass password screens for all users when Windows are booting or when we change users?

Thank in advance for your time

A:Multi-year Windows 8.1 without passwords

Hi Gonik, welcome to the Eight Forums.

That can be done using a Local Account. Windows 8 and 8.1 can use either a Microsoft Account or a Local Account, difference being that a Microsoft Account is connected to an email address. As an email account always requires a password it cannot be removed, therefore the password is also required when signing in to Windows. To put it very short, a Microsoft Account always needs a password.

A Local Account is traditional Windows user account as used in Windows 7 and earlier versions. It may or may not have a password, as user has selected, and even if the password is selected it can be removed. When a Local Account is used in Windows 8 or 8.1, the user can select a separate and individual email account to be used with each Windows Store App needing an email account.

Hi, I have an old (but working amazingly good!) 64bit processor HP Compaq 6730s, upgraded with a SSD drive and 8gb DDR2 ram memory. Currently it is dual-booting running windows 7 home premium, 64 bit edition, pretty smoothly -it has given no problems so far, and Ubuntu 14.04. I am pretty tempted to upgrade to windows 10, but given that it is a relatively old computer, I am not sure wether the hardware will be fully compatible with w10... and also I do not want to loose my partitions! So what do you recommend me... shall I go for it? Thank you very much for your help and for creating amazing computers like the 6730s! Gonzalo

Hi: I have the elitebook 6930p which has basically the same hardware as your model. W10 works just fine on mine, but I do not have a webcam, nor do I use the fingerprint reader or protect tools security software, so I cannot confirm that those work on W10. You should be able to recover to W7 very easily if you do not delete the windows.old folder. To revert, go to settings>update and secuity> http://www.askvg.com/how-to-restore-previous-windows-version-after-upgrading-to-windows-10/

Hi there
I'm in the market for a decent laptop -- I don't want a huge screen but something decently portable that could be plugged into a nice large monitor / docking station when I'm not travelling -- a 14 inch screen is probably the largest I'd want.

So I saw a nice i7 powered ASUS at a decent price -- but looking at the Specs there is NOWHERE on it that says whether it has ANY USB ports at all (I'd ideally like 3 but could manage with 2 and I want USB3 ports).

Asus VIVO - INTEL CORE i7-3517U 4GB 500GB INTEL INTEGRATED GRAPHICS BT/CAM NO OPTICAL 14 INCH TOUCHS - Laptops Direct

So here's another customer they've lost -- not because the product is horrible -- but if the store can't be bothered to write even BASIC info in the spec then I'm not doing business with them. With PC sales declining they need to push for every sale they can make - but they aren't helping their own cause by omitting basic info and I'm not spending ages on the phone finding out either.

So guys - if any of you are in the selling business PLEASE present at least the "Usual" specs -- I'm sure also people DO want USB3 slots on a laptop now -- and they certainly want to know if they have ANY USB slots at all and how many.

Cheers
jimbo

A:No wonder PC sales are Nose diving

Zooming in to the images that are provided for that specific Ultrabook, it seems that there are three USB ports. Two on the left, one on the right next to what seems to be an HDMI port. I have no way of telling if they're USB3 or not, but from what I'm seeing, the ports aren't blue (which is a USB3 indication).

Hi guys, I'm looking to get an XPS 15 9550, i7 for my work (Web developer). As I've got 2 external HD displays I want to use, I'm going for the entry level i7 unit and upgrading it myself (avoids the Dell tax).
So, out if the box, does it support attaching 2 external screens and using them and the internal  panel, giving you 3 screens in total?
Also, can you add a data disk if it doesn't come with one ( ie m2 ssd only).
Lastly how quick is the supplied m2 ssd, is it worth getting a 1TB m2 device instead?
Are there any gotchas to installing 32gb of ram via 2x 16gm sticks?
Regards
Steve

A:XPS 15 9550 - Pre sales questions

The system should have no problem driving three displays.
If you buy the model with the smaller battery --56 W-Hr -- you can install a 2..5" drive in addition to an SSD.  If you buy the 83 W-Hr battery, you can only have one M.2 SSD - the battery takes up the space used by the 2.5" drive bay.
The NVMe/PCie drive interface is 2x -- not 4X, so while it'll be faster than SATA, it's not going to give you full NVMe speeds.  If you want that, you need a Precision mobile workstation model.

Hello all. For two weeks now I've been trying to help an 84 year old veteran fix his virus infected 2 year old Windows 8 Gateway (Walmart) desktop. The poor old guy was a first time PC buyer when he purchased this PC two years ago, & didn't comprehend the implications of not renewing his anti-virus 60 day trial version. Consequently after continuing to operate his PC online for almost two years afterwards, he got badly infected. I went over there to help him a couple of weeks ago & it was obviously infected. I installed Malewarebytes, which found over 2100 malewares & 7 trojans... I've used factory restore from both inside Windows 8 & from boot, & it of course works but won't validate Windows 8 once it completes. I've even tried clearing cmos to no avail. It simply cannot read the encrypted product ID key from the UEFI bios. I could go into another (horrible) story about the third party out of warranty support vendor Acer references on their site, but really what good would it do at this point? Does anyone have a fix for this? Thanks in advance for your time, consideration, & effort!regards, Frank

I have an Asus K53E laptop that I purchased a little over a year ago and I bought it from Best Buy with an extended plan etc. The computer pops up with a message about not a genuine windows and after having three computer guys "repair" it now it is losing drivers for windows. In order to get it to boot I have to tell it to drop windows signature to see my desktop. I have been told this is a RAM problem and to download the drivers from the Asus site which I did and it did nothing. Seems to be a windows boot problem and I am tired of spending money on this machine. I have already spent its worth in repair people to constantly recover the machine. Laptops should last longer than a year I would assume. Now this one is an expensive paperweight. Any ideas?

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Things I've tried:
- My computer cannot run/execute SFC utility in prompt. It always gives this error:
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
- I've tried Microsoft Fix it and it finds no problems
- I've tried the latest 'System Update and Readiness Tool'
- I'm confident it has nothing to do with bitdefender. Even so, I've disabled it and removed it to see if it was an issue and this problem is the same.

Greetings,

This article SEEMS to say that although MS no longer makes patches for Windows XP, (stopped after April 8th, 2014) they have something called Custom Support, where for $200 a year, those who simply cannot update their Windows XP systems due to backwards compatibility issues, could still get Windows XP patches.

How is this possible? Can someone explain what the article means in terms of the Windows XP user?

A:Solved: Windows XP? Custom Supprort? Pay MS $200 a Year.

As the article says, if you are a large company with a Custom Support Agreement Microsoft is required to keep up some support for three more years. And, for XP apparently it's costing those large companies about $200 per PC (per year?). For XP users not in a large company it means nothing.

I currently have an hp paviliondv4 (4gb RAM, 2.2GHZ with windows 7 and avast anti virus). I just bought and returned a Samsung NP550 (6GB RAM, 2.5GHZ with windows 8 and Kepersky security). As soon as I began surfing the net I noticed my new 600 dollar purchase was actually slower than my hp. I ran numerous speed tests and found out my less powerful hp was dogging my brand new more powerful computer. Best buy refunded the purchase completely but not with out a fight. At first they said it was not the computers fault and the Samsung was indeed faster as they pointed out the .3 GHZ advantage it had over the 2.2GHZ hp. They said internet speed is the only factor when speed testing...NONSENSE. I tested both computers on the same internet and the hp was faster in every category every time. The tech and I speed tested the two laptops once side by side and the hp won. Still he said It's not the computer. I told them to have a side by side race with my hp 50 times on the same internet opening a page and playing a video and that's when they refunded me completely including setup. I went to the back of the store and the display model was out performing my hp. Now I'm thoroughly confused. Maybe the display has a different security program? Is this a windows 8 issue? could Kapersky be causing lag? Did I get a defected model?

I work in a business with around 100 computers. 16 of which are in the sales department of the business. We're looking for a network related application that allows the sales team to be able to ring a bell (or something along the lines of) via their computers and the rest of the sales team will be able to see who has made the sale.

Just like a little pop up screen saying "This person has made a sale"

Of course, we will need to input which systems have access to the application and determine which system should receive the messages.

Is there something already on the market of this sort or am I asking way to much and have to go custom?

I testing MYOB to see whether to buy the software. The version of MYOB i'm using is Accounting Plus v12 Test Drive Version. The problem that I'm having is I entered a customer and then entered a sale for the customer and then I entered a few more sales. I then wanted to delete the extra few sales, how can I do that. I tried to edit the service and clicked on the reimburse button at the bottom of the edit service form. The error I kept on getting was "You have not linked any jobs to this customer".
What does this error mean? and how can I delete sales?

Better than Free: With 83% Faster Scanning, Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 Makes Windows 8 Great

inShare. Microsoft gets it. Today, it makes no sense to release an operating system, especially a game-changer like Windows 8, without some form of basic antivirus protection. That?s why Windows 8 comes preloaded with a default form of protection, Windows Defender, that automatically kicks in when the system does not boot up with installed third-party protection.

If you get Defender for free with Windows 8, is there any point to getting any further protection? Yes -- at least 83 to begin with?

The numbers tell a compelling performance story

In side-by-side tests conducted by PassMark, an independent laboratory, Windows 8 with Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 consistently outperformed Windows 8 without it (with Defender as its default). Consider the highlights:

?83% faster scanning: End users spend more time working, less time managing interruptions.

?11% faster boot time, 32% faster applications installation, 39% faster copies, moves and deletes: With Symantec, common computing tasks impose fewer disruptions of real work activity.

?44% less CPU usage, 57% less memory usage than the average security solution. Unlike other antivirus programs, Symantec Endpoint Protection doesn?t degrade operating s... Read more

Hello. I'm new to the forum and appreciate any help you can give.

I'm trying to create a commission sales calculator similar to this thread but with some changes: techguy.org/672521

I've attached my spreadsheet in its current form and it is messy. Only the first few rows even get close to working. My apologies in advance! I doubt you will deem any of this as correct and I'm totally ok with that.

Here is what I'm hoping to achieve:

1. Baseline Commission is always $2,667 per month (8% of 400k revenue generated in 2010).
2. Performance Commission kicks in once gross revenue reaches $450,000 within the first year.
3. Performance Commission then increases by 1% per $50,000 increase.
4. Performance Commission caps once gross revenue reaches $875,000 (17.5%).
5. Performance Commission caps at 17.5% (see #4 above).
6. The percentage reached at the end of any given year carries over to the next year even though the revenue generated restarts at zero.

I'd like each of the items in this list to be reflected somehow in the spreadsheet if possible. Several of the fields aren't calculating because I simply couldn't make them work correctly.

Please go easy on me as this is my first spreadsheet with legitimate calculations.

Anyone up for helping me tackle this one?

Deborah

We have an I-plate with the built in filter that splits the phone from dsl connection on the master socket (Only socket) in our home.

Our internet modem dsl light has been flickering and the internet turns off. The ISP claims they have no part in the fault but I doubt it. They are talktalk. (Read my theory below)

I have taken the I-plate off and attached an old filter into the test socket. Everything is working fine with full speed. (The I-plate is useless since we have 1 socket in our home)

Questions!

Why did TalkTalk engineers install this unreliable piece of hardware?
If I had more sockets in the house, I would not be able to set up the modem at other sockets, right? (With the I-plate on) because the phone is split from internet at direct entry?
Am I the only one experiencing a lot of faulty filters? Or do they just tend to break down after about 6 months?
Is it illegal or against any rules to take the I-plate off and re-install our previous one? (It does not require removing or adjusting any cables directly, only un-clipping the plate and replacing it with our old one.
Is it a good idea to just revert to what we had before and pay for crappy micro filters that are much cheaper?

THEROY:

I believe Talktalk installed one of these I-plates that are un-reliable and will break pretty quickly.
I believe that Talktalk want us to complain about it until they send and engineer out to replace it and force us to pay for another piece of dodgy hardware.
I believe Talktal... Read more

I think your right Dean, talktalk has not been honest in the past, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they were doing so again.

HI there
No wonder PC sales are dying currently -- nothing to do with Windows 8 or the OS -- it's just the HARDWARE being put in these just seems to be going backwards.

I've been looking at some "Convertibles" -- guess what -- the reasonably portable versions (anything bigger than 14 inch screen IMO is a no no for real portability) seem to be fitted with CELERON processors for Gawds sake -- I'd want probably an i5 at a minimum on a new piece of kit although if the price was really cheap I probably could get away with a decent i3 processor. Then they fit a SLOW IDE 5400 RPM type 500 GB drive -- I'd want an SSD - especially with a lower powered processor. and then the screen resolution is a stinking 1366 X 768. I'd want at least 1080P HD (1080 x 1920) these days.

Don't people ever do their marketing properly or have the been listening to GARTNER's again.

Spec for me is 11.5 or 14 inch NATIVE 1080 X 1920, SSD, Touch (although not mandatory), i5 processor (i3 just about tolerable) USB3 X 2 if poss but certainly 1 USB 3 slot, 8GB RAM (if it's got 6 I don't care as I can swap the memory), HDMI output (whether via a Mini HDMI or standard connector I don't care), and preferably in a convertible form factor (but that's not mandatory either. I don't need a DVD drive either.

Now Laptops with this type of spec seem to be as rare as Hen's teeth -- what sort of marketing says put an ATOM CELERON in some modern gear or were these the processors they had left over after the... Read more

A:No wonder PC sales are dying - look at the latest specs

I take it the Surface Pro doesn't appeal to you? The Dell XPS 12 Convertible Touch Ultrabook seems close to what you list, but it isn't cheap. HDMI may be a problem as it seems they're moving away from HDMI and towards Display Port/Mini Display Port instead (I wish manufacturers would stop changing ports).

XPS 12 convertible 12" touch Ultrabook

I guess it boils down to price at the end of the day and for a lot of people they just stick with a normal laptop.

I am changing a current report we do from excel to access. I have a column for sales for the day, sales for the same day last week, week to date sales, month to date, and year to date sales. I have a form which i enter the sales date into, it runs the queries and puts them into the report.

Right now, I have to enter the parameter for the beginning of the week date too. I am trying to make it automatically enter the beginning of the weeks date (Monday) based off of the one date that I enter.

The way it figures the month to date is from queries for each month Example( >=#6/1/2010# And <=[FORMS]![REPORT DATES]![ZZZDATE])

Week to Date = (>=[FORMS]![REPORT DATES]![WKDATE] And <=[FORMS]![REPORT DATES]![zzzdate])

How do I make it find the beginning of the week, without having to enter the parameter?

I am using Access 2003 on Windows XP.

A:Week to Date Sales Column

Charliana, wlecome to the Forum.
I almost missed this question as it does not have Access in it's title.
You can calculate the Monday's date based on the Curent Date on the Form and use that in the Query's Criteria.
You can also use the
between #6/1/2010# And [FORMS]![REPORT DATES]![ZZZDATE])
in the query
