hello team i have some questions for yas!!! Ill try my best to explain them.. First im wondering how i can change the name of a customized desktop backround? Second im wondering why i have two recycling bins when i go to my display properties>desktop tab>customize desktop >general tab? lastly why is only intenet explorer checked under desktop icon?(other options that could be checked say my computer, network places and my documents)

A:hello team its grassi

Hi grassi

First your customized background is stored in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and can be renamed from there. Application Data is a hidden directory. Remember to set the renamed file as your background afterwards.

The 2 recycle bins are just the icons that will appear on your desktop. 1 when your bin is empty the other when you have files in there.

The customize desktop> general tab lets you decide whether or not to show shortcuts for my computer my documents etc on the desktop.

Hi all,

Happy New Year to the group at TSG. My computer has been running slower than usual and I am afraid of spyware/malware might have infected my computer. I have updated and ran both Spybot S&D and Ad-Adware SE and both showed no signs of concern. I figure I post a HJT log to see if there is anything I should worry about or anything I missed. Or maybe there is something I can do to speed up my system. Thank You.

A:HJT Log, please check, Thanks & Happy New Year.

Hi there and welcome to TSG
The log is looking clean to me, no signs of malware.

There are a few steps I want you to complete to try and resolve the slow down on your computer.
A whole host of reasons might account for this slow down, but I will highlight the most prominent ones below.
On most computers malware is the most common cause, but at the moment I do not think this is the case.
You might like to limit the programs that are loading when your computer starts, you might have unneccessary software loading whn you boot your computer which is eating away at your CPU and ultimatley slowing down your computer. Many programs install a quick launch feature which is not needed; if you want to use the program you can start it up manually. The easiest way to see whether a program is needed at startup, you can use bleeping computer's own list, which gives an indication of whether the program is required/optional etc. Note that essential processes such as those for your anti-virus or your modem must be kept.
So, firstly click on start, then run and type msconfig. Then hit enter.
Click on the startup tab and a list of programs will appear.
You can compare the startup name with those on the startup list., link is below:

To stop a program loading at boot just remove the tick.
Click "Ok", and choose to restart.

You might like to try and clear clutter off your computer, and free up some space on your harddrive.

Hi, I recently built a Windows 7 machine with Intel i3 540, Biostar MB, 4GB DDR3 ram, XFX Radeon HD 4650 Video, 430-watt Corsair PSU, Western Digital 160GB SATA, and Sony PATA DVD-writer. It seemed to work fine for about a week. I connected my an old 20GB XP drive via a usb-to-ide converter, and an old 40GB fat32 drive to an internal IDE connection to transfer over my old data. After that, my computer would not reboot. I removed my old drives and leaving just the new 160GB SATA Windows 7 drive. It still wouldn't boot. I let Windows 7 try to fix it, and ran chkdsk with all the parameters on all my partitions--still no luck. I followed these tutorials:

MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record

How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows

I run into a brick wall when I try to rebuild the bcd though. I get the message, "total identified windows installations: 0" even though my Windows 7 installation is recognized in the repair GUI. In the repair command prompt, the boot files are located on my c: drive and my d: drive is my Windows 7 installation. Anyone have any suggestions? I moved some files from my old hard drives (rather than copied), otherwise I would just reinstall.

'Boom year' for hi-tech criminals.

Sophos said it was now seeing more than 20,000 new malicious programs every day. 2008 was also the year in which Symantec revealed that its anti-virus software now protected against more than one million viruses.

The vast majority of these malicious programs are aimed at Windows PCs. Viruses made their debut more than 20 years ago but the vast majority of that million plus total have been created in the last two-three years.

Later, he was watching me use my PC, and I downloaded the Wikipedia app and pinned it. After that, I put down the computer and played some Xbox with him beside me. He then gave the tech support his credit card and was charged $250.00 for a "annual service subscription".
Step 1 - I called the Credit card company and reported the fraud, had the  charged dismissed, and the account closed, new card issued.
Step 2 - unplugged his desktop from the cable modem, and took the box home with with
Step 3 -  contacted Bleeping computer

Step what?  Was he infected?  did this company really "take over" his computer?   I'm not   getting great answers from "Dad", because he was so flustered by the whole experience, and pretty embarrassed about getting scammed.
Do these unscrupulous  tech support scammers actually drop a virus on a computer, and if so have others had this experience?

current vba code is:-
ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \2012"
Range("c57:h102").ExportAsFixedFormat Type:=xlTypePDF, Filename:=composedfn & ".pdf"
Is there a way to save to ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \ currentyear
without having to change the vba integer value to each new year? or using if statements for each year? So when the 1st of jan comes it automatically save to the new current year directory and if possible creates a directory at the start of each new year as well?

A:Solved: Save PDF to a year directory each new year or month

If folder exist....

' Does this directory exist? If not, create it.
If objFSO.FolderExists(strParentPath) = False Then
Set newFolder = objFSO.CreateFolder(strParentPath)
Wscript.Echo "Put a ocr fold here" &

I found a post on this exact topic from back in 2010. I am trying to incorporate the code into my database and am not able to get the code to work if I make any changes. Here is the link to the previous thread:

I have also uploaded the database that was provided in the last post. If I try to change the field and object names I appear to be unsuccessful in having the code still work even when I change the items in the code as well. I woud like some help. I would like for there to be a field called "RequestDate" that has the date stamp that is keyed in by the user. Then after that is keyed in on the form the "AssignmentID" field is updated to the new assignment number. The "RequestDate"="Admit_Date" and "AssignmentID"="ActualFWCNumber". I am trying to do this in Access 2010. If I make changes either the number field doesn't autopopulate or the same number keeps repeating. Any and all assistance on this would be great.

I've read every post I could find on this so I'm sorry to ask another dumb question but here goes.

I created an access database (volunteer work) which has an autoincrement field to issue numbers to animals taken in at our shelter. My 'boss' (also a volunteer) wants this simple autoincrement changed to a value which begins with the two digit year and then has 4 digits, starting with 0001 which will increment sequentially and restart at 0001 with the new calendar year. Therefore, records will start with 10-0001, 10-0002, etc for this year and 11-0001, 11-0002 for next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an installation folder on my main machine(Windows 7) with all my software. I have repeatedly run into issues connecting odd devices to my shared folder. This time I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview (on a different machine) and don't understand why it tells me I can't access my own machine. After all these years, you would think user friendly would be a reality. It seems to be a coin toss as to which machines will connect. I hate never knowing I can access my own machine without issue. Here I am trying to install applications but yet I can't get to my storage location.

What is the secret to sharing your machine, so that anyone on the same network can access shared folders?

Edit: I always turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and Print Sharing".

A:Network connection issues (year after year)

I'm more brutal via the firewall:

set trust localhost and your lan ip's, eg

then add two rules for only the PRIVATE PROFILE

inbound allow tcp/udp from to any for ports 137-139,445
outbound allow tcp/udp from any to for ports 137-139,445
I use a much more complicate scheme in reality to enforce known vs unknown devices and to segregate WiFI from wired access, but that's just me.

In services, ensure these are running

Bonjour Service ( mDNSResponder)
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness

The pop up was telling you that your D drive/partition was nearly full, and you needed to either remove some files from it or start saving data to another drive/partition.

You now deleted your D drive, which was a partition on your primary hard drive, so now the drive is not available, nor the data that was on it. Since you deleted the partition, you will need to use a partition tool (such as partition magic) to recreate the D partition or absorb the now unallocated space into your C drive.

Hopefully nothing critical was stored on that partition. If there was, I suggest you purchase data recovery software and recover the data that was on it BEFORE you re-partition the space or absorb it into your C drive.

P.S. Deleting drives/partitions is a bad thing unless you know specifically what you are doing, don't need any data on the drive/partition or plan on absorbing the unallocated space into your primary drive/partition and have transferred any needed information on the partition to another location.

I bought a new laptop, I don't like 7! What is stopping me from scrubbing it an loading XP on it? Is there any thing that would cause an issue??

A:New lap top not happy with 7

Two things.

1) Microsoft no longer supports XP and

2) Your laptop may not support XP (there may not be XP compatible drivers available for all of the hardware)

Recently my laptop, running Windows 7, refused to load.  I received an error message that said there was something wrong with the loader.  I ran Repair, System Restore, and so on, to no avail, receiving messages that said repairs could not be made.  The System Restore date, there was only one listed, ran to no effect.  In an effort to ensure that I did not lose anything, I have been rather laboriously using the Command Prompt to copy files, directory by directory, to an external hard drive. (I know, I know, I should have backed the thing up. But could I be bothered with that? Nooooo!!)  I would like to stop doing all this, and avoid reloading the system from the Windows 7 disc, which it appears will wipe everything out and start thiings all over.  Is there something I can do to make a fix to this thing and preserve all my data?  I have some knowledge of these things, though I am far from expert, but I can follow a recipe.  Thanks in advance.

Well, been a long slog indeed. After deleting crap-ware and installing a third party start app (Start Menu 8) plus Big Muscle's Aero Glass, I'm now very happy with 8.

Granted, more like Franken-8 but I like it. Thank the gods above for third party coders.

Still, snappier than 7 and I like the added features. Although, chkdsk GUI sucks.

Time to image. Love this look.

Greetings all
My name is Ash and I am from Malaysia. I am a Windows XP user and have had my fair share of viruses and malware. I finally decided to purchase AVG thinking it would solve all my problems but sadly, it was not the case. I recently got hit with the PIC006.JPG-msn.messenger virus and it gave me a real headache. Using the MSNcleaner.exe program I managed to remove the threat. My question is why didn't AVG do this for me? How come it did not detect it beforehand?

Has anyone been burned by AVG before? How do I know my AVG is in perfect working condition? (The icon on the tray is in full color)

Do help as I payed a lot of money for the anti virus and now am feeling like I got cheated. Help.

A:Are You Happy With Avg? I Am Not. Pls Advice.

Hi and to Bleeping Computer goldwave84! I recommend you post and introduction in the Introductions section.First off, no Anti-virus protection is foolproof, even if you paid for it. Many people think that if you pay for your internet security, they are 100% protected. They are wrong. No protection is foolproof and will make your system 100% invulnerable to malware. Also, many people think that if they purchase a security program like Norton for $70 onwards, they are fully protected. This is wrong aswell, Norton is one of the biggest resource hogs and has many issues. It still does it's job but why pay $70+ when the right combination of freeware internet security applications can do an even better job and not use up valuable system resources. So, don't always think that even if you pay for your internet security that it is goign to protect your system 100%.Regards,David.

Hello people I have recently purchased a copy of xp pro which turns out to be a fake copy, the product key was invalid and also my original key was not accepted. The reason I bought another copy was because I have a fairly old laptop with a dead hdd which I have now replaced and formatted with wipedrive pro . I have called Asus to see if they could give me a replacement copy of xp, but they couldn't help so I called Microsoft and they couldn't help either!! Sorry for rambling on but my question is as follows;

Is there anyway I can get hold of a copy of xp professional and use my genuine COA? Either original or some sort of download?
Any help appreciated peeps!!

A:Non genuine xp pro, not happy!

and welcome to the Forum

Do you have a sticker on the side of the tower ( bottom of a laptop ) with the Product Key on it? . . Looks similar to this:

If so, you can use that key with a OEM disk that matches the sticker ( Home, Pro or MCE )

Of course I have this 4inch x 4 inch Mcafee advisory in the right hand corner of my screen and I can't read anything in that corner. I guess thats the next thing I get to 'play' with.
I thought I'd also let you know that error number 80048820 is also associated with 80072ee7

Is there a device, log or something similar on these wondrous machines that tell a user the original factory settings and that record any changes that have been made to either the hardware or software since receiving it?

Hi all,

First post and would welcome some help...

A couple of days ago I started getting all manner of popups, Happy 888, Spyware Doctor etc. I ran AVG and it identified several problems, all of which I fixed, ran Spybot and got a couple of others, all healed. But I'm still getting Happy 888 popups and IE crashes frequently. Also there's something installing on startup which features a window with the title '????'.

Below is my Hijackthis log - I am also getting the entry:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [only23] c:\windows\scvhost.exe

which I remove, but then when I restart my PC, it's back again. Any ideas?

Thanks! Clare

Ok guys, I just bought Dell xps with vista 64. I was just getting to like it then I found out my HP inkjet 4200 won't work with vista. I spent 1hr on a driver download from HP to no avail. At first it was printing but you needed a magnifying glass to read the print, and I couldn't just have a selection print, oh no it had to print all 7 pages. Then I go to copy a movie and guess what? My DVD43 does not work with vista!
Does anything work with vista? Now I need to go out and purchase a printer that is compatible with vista, if there is such a thing!
Oh well it sounds like I am having a pms night.

Whilst it may be natural for you now to assume all computer related issues are malware related, this may not be the case.

This entry can be fixed with HJT:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Other then that - the HJT log is clean.

Have you considered or tried re-installing the Kodak Software (uninstall first) to see if that will correct the problem?

I must admit, I made a huge mistake by formatting and moving to Windows 7 from my absolutely perfect XP set up, but now that 7 is here I might try and figure out what my problems are before reverting back to XP.

Lets get one thing out of the way first, while I do know how to maintain a computer more than the average user, I'm definitely not all that computer savvy and I'm also easily frustrated with computers and absolutely hate them, it's just not stuff I like tinkering with or have any interest to mess with.

My Specs:
Athlon 64 3500+
7800GTX 256MB

I had an absolutely perfect XP SP2 installation on this system that used BBLean(blackbox) as its main shell and in the two years it was on my computer I didn't have a single problem with that setup, technically it's 4 years since I've had the same setup since 2005 but my HDD in 2007 and I replaced it with a new one then and had to install stuff all over again.

Fact of the matter is, from 2005-2009 I didn't have any problems with my system, no slow downs, no viruses or spyware, I maintained a nice, clean registry at all times with RegCleaner I think and TuneUp.

Yesterday I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and I honestly hate it, it doesn't do what I want it to do and I can't even begin to understand why. Was getting x64 for my system a mistake?

My biggest problem is, my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet, I don't have Phtoshop CS4, tried installing a trial and of course it wouldn't even want to install on Windows 7, I'll give some... Read more

Hi there,

I know nothing about formatting a hard drive. I used to have a computer with WIN98SE and it really gave me no problems for quite a while until the hard drive just died. Recently, I purchased a refurb with Windows XP, but with 128 RAM. From what I gather, I was ripped off.

I really just need some advice here. What is your opinion of my puchasing an older Dell computer with WIN 98 SE already on it and Nero on board from eBay. It has a 40 GB hard drive, Pentium 833 mHz, and 256 RAM. Or, should I invest in WIN98 OS and strip my present drive and have a tech come in and install WIN 98 SE? I don't have a lot of income and am retired.

I don't do graphics to speak of, hardly know HTML, and really just use the computer for email, browsing and downloading audiobooks. My XP won't let me use Nero. I tried to install Nero 6 and all I could do is burn images. It was working for a while and then all of a sudden it stopped - something about ASPI. I have the ASPI layers installed, but still no Nero. I really don't like all the patches and updates that go along with XP and I don't like the idea of XP "protecting" me, seems like there is very little freeware out there that it will let me install.

To put another fly in the ointment, I also have the live CDs for Linux "Big Daddy" and "PCLinuxOS." I tried to use the former with my present computer. It was too slow, however, to use as a live CD due to the lack of RAM. So there i... Read more

Just curious- how long have you had xp? maybe just a little time to get over the speed bump of using something quite new- I was a bit huffy when I switched to xp for the first time. Though not advisablr, for the limited functions you want to do, 128ram is 'do-able'. Save yourself some $$$ and put in another 128 ram, Regarding Nero issue, use google to get some workarounds like the one I found below which may help; Also you should be able to find advice/previous threads on nero/xp issues... good luck anyways.

If the screen is black, or Verrrrry dark, you card see some reflection. The difference in brightness between this and my old HP with regular TFT LCD is...well night and day

Haven't tried any serious games on it to test out Video performance.

Sound is excellent with Harmon Kardon spkrs.

1)My screen brightness is stuck I can't reduce nor increase it. The bar goes up and down but the nothing changes. (restarted, nothing changed)

Not sure if someone's asked about this before but I gave up trying to search thru the forums, so here goes..
Up until a few months ago I was running strategy games like Blitzkreig n C&C's on my laptop (I can hear the groans). There were running great, then all of a sudden they stopped working. The game logo appears but then the computer stops, has a little think and after a few slow flickers it goes from blank screen back to the desktop, no error messages. Out of curiosity today i tried running 3Dpinball and the same thing happened when I tried fullscreen.
It's a Toshiba laptop with a Trident(more groans) CyberAladdin video card. Apparently, according to dxdiag, Directx version is dx9.0b. That's the other thing, Direct Draw tests pass ok but Direct 3D tests cancel by themselves then say i clicked the mouse.."i don't think so!"
I'm thinking i may have changed DirectX versions inadvertently. For some reason it seems to have problems switching 3d programs to fullscreen.
Do I need to change back to an older DirectX version(what's the easiest way to do that) or is it somethin else?
Cheers n beers.

Hi hux,

That's a clean log..

You may want to reduce all those startups though, it'll speed you up no end.

Go here and check out which ones you need, and which ones you don't. I assume you can use msconfig, but if not, you'll find the info here.

I just noticed a folder in OS (C:) named '$windows.~bt', created ‎Tuesday, ‎March ‎13, ‎2012. I have read from this forum and from Log files that are created when you upgrade to Windows Vista from an earlier version of Windows, that this type folder is created when you upgrade ( or attempt to) to Windows Vista from an earlier version of Windows.

My computer shipped with Vista Home Premium, so I wouldn't have tried to upgrade to same. I'm about 99% satisfied with this OS, and haven't tried to upgrade to anything. How could this folder have gotten on my computer, and is there any harm in deleting it?

A:[SOLVED] Happy With What I Have

If a Repair of Windows Vista was started and was stopped it would create this folder.

Hi There,
I am really not happy with the HP product I am using (HP G42-354TU Notebook PC) this is the first time I have used HP product and to my fear I am facing a lot of problems with it. I have been using my Dell laptop and did not face any such issues.Since I have purchased HP Laptop It started giving problems from the third month .it went slow .started giving blue screen and if you check your records you will find the number of times I have called HP helpdesk for assistance and each time i was told to restore the computer to its orignal factory settings and after restoring it worked fine for another 15-20 days but had same issues after some time, now it does not boot and it is constantly giving me a blue screen and when we again approached HP helpdesk i was told that the Harddisk needs to be changed as it is the hardware issue.I had purchased this laptop on the 17 Oct 2010, my concern is that ,are HP products only good till the time they are in warrenty.
I will request you if you can change/Replace the HDD free of cost as it is just few days that the warenty has got over, and I started facing problem with HP laptop right from the third month of purchase, and i was never told that there was some problem with the HDD till the time it was in warrenty as and when I approached the HP helpdesk.

OK. This is not a Windows 7 question.

I was in WORD 2003 and typing.

I think I had the shift key ON.

Somehow I got a happy face to show up in WORD.

Anyone know how/where to get this in WORD?

I can't find it as I was hitting random keys and it just showed upl

No, I don't just hit random keys in my spare time. I was typing something and not looking at keyboard.

Hello joeman123 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. It sounds like Bit Defender is picking up ccleaner incorrectly. that happens sometimes. McAfee does the same thing with the latest version of HijackThis.

The HijackThis log is clean so there are no problems there. About the only option available is to not use ccleaner with Bit Defender. You could contact them and let them know that the latest definition files are incrrectly flagging ccleaner or try and use an older version or simply use a different disk cleaner like CleanUp! or Disk Cleaner.

Download and install: HiJackThis.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.

Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into this thread

I recently did the upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 Everything was running great on 8.1 and I put off even thinking about the upgrade until now. After talking to a guy I know that has done the upgrade for 10 people, he said the only issue he had was that there were older programs that were not compatible with Windows 10. So I did the upgrade. Ever since I did that, my internet keeps dropping. It may stall and eventually a page will come up (like 50-60 seconds later) or it may get to the point of letting me know I have no internet connection. It's driving me crazy. I updated the Network adapter and thought that might help. It didn't. So I'm thinking it's Windows 10. A friend remotely looked at my system and said everything looked fine. So I'm stumped and ready to revert back to 8.1 - but I'm not sure if that's the solution. Can you give me any other tips, tricks, or tweeks to make my laptop stop dropping the internet. Other devices in my home work fine with the WIFI. I'm really kicking myself that I didn't leave the laptop alone when it was just fine!!!

A:Upgraded to Windows 10 - Not Very Happy

I had that issue for a while, in my case it was a combination of windows defender and something to do with cortana.
Turn off defender and it would happen less often until defender started itself again. eliminated cortana and all the laggy internet issues went away.
could also be power settings if the allow shutdown box is checked for the nic in device manager as well.

You have two malware apps installed and loaded. They both (AVG & Kaspersky) have been known to have BSOD's on certain systems.

I would remove them both and replace with Microsoft security Essentials

AVG - Download tools
Also the BSOD's were memory corruption I would run memtest.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. - Memory Diagnostic

Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Hi everyone,

I built a system a couple years ago and placed Win XP Pro and Win 98SE with 512 MB of RAM and never had a problem. Recently, I decided to get another 512 MB of RAM since my mobo supports 1 GB of RAM. I find it unbelievable that Win 98 SE can handle 1 GB of RAM but XP cannot. When I try to boot XP, it just hangs at the welcome screen. I cannot even boot in safe or any other mode.

I tested both sticks of RAM separately and they both work in Win 98 SE. XP works with either one of the sticks so I know it is not a bad memory module. When I try to use boths sticks, XP just hangs. I tried playing with the page file, the switches in the boot.ini file but nothing helps. I even went to the MS website and found about the limitation of XP with 4 GB of RAM abut I am not even close to it with just 1 GB. What gives?

Has anyone seen this before? Should I ditch XP and move to Linux?

My machine: mobo DFI CM33-TL (370-based) 512MB of RAM (can support 1 GB of PC100/133 SDRAM), on-board LAN, sound, and USB support.

Thanks in advance.

So I recently came across some disposable income (AKA Merry Xmas to me) and thought to myself, hmmmmmm, new computer chair? New GPU? Orrrrrrr how about we fill up my RAM slots!!!

I went to Bing, popped in Kingston HyperX 1600 DDR3 and went surfing. Came across an AWESOME deal in the amazon where they were selling what appeared to be my RAM for $75.99. It had a few extra letters and numbers though so I paused for a moment and then took a wave over to Kingston's site where I became enlightened. KHX1600C9D3K2/2GETR while similar, was not in fact the part number on my current sticks KHX1600C9D3/2G (checked w/CPU-Z and then manually to confirm). After a quick call to Kingston to figure out what the heck ETR meant(becuase they failed to list that on their site HA!) I determined that the 2x2GB sticks I had were single channel while the K2 designates the amazonian RAM as dual channel and that the ETR is negligible as it just denotes that it is an online sold RAM versus one you could purchase from a physical store.
Now I happened to find my exact RAM reasonably priced directly from Kingston at $42 a 2GB stick. The next day however, the amazonian RAM offered a deal where there is now a $20 mail in rebate on their RAM, which means for ~$90 I could get 2x2GB of the exact RAM I have or for ~$55 I could get 2x2GB of the dual channel.

Now, I know how to properly seat RAM. I know that matching the RAM in pairs exactly is the best way to confirm stability, and that the RAM voltage a... Read more

Excuse my way of wording this, but honestly... No matter what I do to this computer, it seems to find some damn reason to shut itself off due to some heat issue it's experiencing.

I have tried:

> lowering the clock on the CPU via the BIOS, which didn't seem to help much at all)

> lowering the clock on the GPU, all that did was cause my screen to obtain a beautiful rainbow pattern, then my computer shut down, then my GPU reset it's own settings.

> tried increasing fan speeds, but even at 90%-100%, it barely prevents shutdowns.

> Put it in an area where it has absolute maximum airflow, where NOTHING is restricted, and it had literally no effect whatsoever.

> Changed cooling fluid, that didn't do anything to the heat problem.

> Changed fans, and added more than I originally had, didn't solve the problem, in fact, it only successfully reduced the overall temperatures by 1 C.

And I'm not even running these games on any sort of "high definition" settings, I'm running them on the absolute minimum, something this computer should have absolutely no problems with.

It also doesn't help that now it's experiencing lag issues on almost every game, again, on low settings, even though it SHOULD be having no problems whatsoever, especially on low.

So, should I even bother trying to get this thing to be pleased with all the BS I've gone through to get it to function half-decent, or just throw it in the trash?

I'm seriously considering just forgetting abou... Read more

I would be very grateful for any advice following a not very successful attempt to upgrade my RAM.

My ageing computer (2001 vintage, ASUS A7V motherboard) came with 256 Mb RAM installed and I recently got a new 512 Mb DIMM from Crucial after running their tool to determine the corrrect memory type.

I installed this in the remaining empty DIMM slot yesterday and the computer certainly recognises it now has 768 Mb RAM installed, however I cannot consistently load Windows (XP SP3) normally (usually self-reboots in a loop), though I can consistently boot to safe mode.

Once in Windows, Internet Explorer usually terminates with an error message shortly after launching though I did manage to get to Windows Update on one occasion and I grabbed the two hardware updates that were offered to me - one was a AMD Athlon CPU-related update which I thought might help, but no deal.

The 'Found New Hardware' wizard was of no help at all - sadly

Can anyone help me on what to try next - would a BIOS update be in order? The only thing I have tried so far in the bios is to set the performance from 'optimal' to 'normal' because the bios help menu suggested this as possible way to improve system stability, though I don't think this has made a difference.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance!
