Help with Torpig trojan, completed 5 step

Q: Help with Torpig trojan, completed 5 step

I completed Microbell's five step process. I am here because spybot found torpig but couldn't remove it. I could not update to SP1a or SP2, I received a set-up error noting it could not complete the install. Below is the main text file from dss with the extra text file attached. I am looking to clean out the torpig trojan and any other additional virus's. I would also appreciate any help on why I cannot update to SP1a or SP2

Thank you for the help ahead of time.

I read the five (5) steps thoroughly and completed the first (1) step having to remove only 2 or so programs.

I have attempted to run the Panda Scan in Internet Exporer only to receive the following error:

I posted this in the previous thread in the networking section and was advised to follow the 5 step guide and post the logs in here.

This is the previous post and the logs.

I have had a read of the alot of forums including this one and noticed a few people having similar issues however no solid solutions have been offered.
Many claim the problem relates to malware but i see no evidence of that.

The Situation.
I have recently moved into a new place and have connected to a freedom plus cable internet account with Optus in Australia, They have supplied me with a wireless netgear cable modem (CG814Wg v3) and a Netgear Wireless USB adapter (WG111 v2) However I am currently connected to the modem with an Ethernet cable. To try and Diagnose my problem.

The Issue
Upon starting the computer all software has access to the internet without hitch however after a short period of time (Between 5mins and 30mins) All software will lose access to the internet. MSN messenger will say it cannot establish a conection, Mozilla FF will show a blank page with "Done" in the loading progress bar displayed, IE will say it can not access the webpage and games will stay at the connecting phase indefinetly. Windows will claim the connection is still active and pinging google via command prompt returns positive results with no loss. Repairing the connection does nothing, the only thing that allows me access again is to restart the computer. The same issue occurs regardless of wea... Read more

A:I kept to a step by step guide to get rid of a trojan

Hi and welcome to Bleeping. I see you have a few problems there. Before we get started I've noticed you're running HijackThis from a temp folder. This isn't a good idea as the vital backups the program makes can be accidently deleted. It's VERY IMPORTANT that you place the program in it's own dedicated folder preferably on your C:\Go to My Computer (Windows key+e), double click on C:Click File > New > FolderName it HijackThis and unzip/move or download the program again to this folder.Run HijackThis again and place a check before the following entries:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll/spage.htmlR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blankR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll/spage.htmlR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blankR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blankR0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blankR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.zpecialoffer.com/results.asp?keyword=%sR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blankR1 - HKLM\Soft... Anyone else come across this one?
I have a client with it on the system and at this stage it only shows itself as a change to a bank login page (asks for full pin and password - otherwise a perfect copy of the original). I am told that the virus changes it's signatures through access to a server and has been known to kill itself.
Kaspersky will stop it getting onto a system but is unable to remove it once present. The only other AV package supposed to be able to stop it is F-Secure.
It also attaches itself to the MBR and again I am told that this cannot be cleared, even with a low level format so the recommendation is to replace the hard drive. This last came from the NatWest Bank who seem very worried but do not have any other solution.
It has been around for about 18 months but is so good at hiding itself that there is no real idea of how many infected machines there are out there. Propagation by email attachments and websites.
I was able to remove it from this system once using Hijackthis but the client revisited the website (a family history site we think) and promptly reinfected the machine.
I have been instructed to replace the hard drive so that is what I will do.

Anybody have anything to add to that lot?

I did some searching and although my spybot comes up with the Torpig trojan, the Torpig removal websites are telling me to remove files I just don't have. These are the only two files spybot comes up with, and I can't delete them(says they are still in memory).

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\$_2341233.TMP

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\$_2341234.TMP

I haven't been able to find any of the other files that supposedly are related to Torpig. This is supposed to be a password stealer so i'm anxious to get rid of it. Anybody had luck removing this thing?

Hello, I downloaded something infected with a trojan I believe as the IRC server I connect to added me to a ban list managed by cbl.abuseat.org. This website told me I had the trojan.anserin and recommends a process to remove but it's an old process and I am not sure it would work. I'm a computer noob so I have to get help from people when I make blunders like this. My Hijackthis log file is posted below and here is what I have done so far after being informed that I was infected. I did a system restore to an hour before, I deleted the file I downloaded, I ran spywareS&D and malware bytes both. Just want to be sure I get rid of it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Anything new out there on detection of Torpig, or a fix for it?

A routine scan with SpyBot around June 21 revealed detection of Torpig,
but SpyBot could not fix it.
In a different thread, an expert suggested that SpyBot might be reading
a false positive on Torpig.
My scans with Adaware and Norton have not detected Torpig.

Hello folks!

First a little introduction about what I?ve done before I found this forum:
I live in a dormitory and got a message from the internet service provider that my computer is infected by the Mebroot/Torpig Trojan. They blocked my internet access because of that Trojan. Yesterday I scanned my computer with the anti-virus programs ?Avira Free Antivirus?, ?Malwarebytes Anti-Malware? and ?Spybot - Search and Destroy?. None of these programs was able to find the Trojan. The internet service provider advised GMER and Kaspersky TDSSKiller. With GMER I found ?MBRoot/[email protected] code?, with Kaspersky TDSSKiller I found ?Rootkit.Boot.Sinowal.b?. In Kaspersky TDSSKiller I chose the option ?Cure?, rebooted the computer and searched again with GMER and Kapspersky TDSSKiller. Nothing was found, so I wrote a mail to the internet service provider that my computer was clean now and today my internet access was activated again.

Now my problem:
As I said GMER no longer shows ?MBRoot/[email protected] code has been found? written in red after the scan anymore. But when I look closer there is still something that doesn?t sound that good (although it isn?t written in red, but in black letters): ?malicious Win32: MBRoot code @ sector 320143323?.
Furthermore I can find the files ?ibm00001.exe?, ?ibm00003.exe?, ?country.exe? and ?ibm00001.dll? in my registry and I read that these files are signs of the Torpig Trojan.

I would like to know if the Mebroot/Torpig Trojan still is on my computer ... Read more

Good evening. When you ran TDSSKiller it should have created a log saved to the root of you hard drive as C:\TDSSKiller.Version_Date_Time_log.txt. - i'd like a copy of the contents in your next reply. Please check that you get the one with the right date and time. As I said GMER no longer shows ?MBRoot/[email protected] code has been found? written in red after the scan anymore. But when I look closer there is still something that doesn?t sound that good (although it isn?t written in red, but in black letters): ?malicious Win32: MBRoot code @ sector 320143323?.It is possible that this is just leftover junk from the infection, but we'll peek further in a while.Furthermore I can find the files ?ibm00001.exe?, ?ibm00003.exe?, ?country.exe? and ?ibm00001.dll? in my registry and I read that these files are signs of the Torpig Trojan. Can you tell me where exactly in the registry you find these file names?

My desktop background does not work. My sound does not work. My computer has become frustratingly unstable, and Norton tracks backdoor emails being sent in hordes. I am pretty sure its a keylogger, and I am almost positive it is a Trojan C or J virus due to the ibm00004.exe file that was once in my Common Files folder.

I fixed it using HJT, aswell as 0camcap.exe, and I am still getting problems. I looked for a fix for the Trojan on the internet and there doesn't seem to be one set in stone-- I am wondering (hoping, praying, wishing) that somebody will help me remove it. I would be very grateful!

A:Pretty Sure I Have A Torpig-c Trojan

Hello jobeHijackThis is an advanced tool that requires advanced knowledge about the Windows Operating System. Most of the log entries are required to run a computer and removing essential ones can potentially cause serious damage. If you do not have advanced knowledge about computers you should NOT fix anything using HijackThis without consulting a expert as to what to fix. And just because you "fixed" something with HJT, that does not mean you have a clean system. The "Fix" button in HJT does NOT remove malware and it appears you still have some in your system. We can help you with this problem but I suggest you read and follow all instructions in the pinned topic titled Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log.When you have done that, post a log in the HijackThis Logs and Analysis Forum, not here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy. Please be patient as they are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have no replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, a team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Hi,
My dorm IT personnel has recently locked my computer out of the wireless network saying its been infected by the torpig trojan. It must have gotten past the Trend Micro Titanium firewall I have up. I have used Trend Micro, Malware Bytes and Microsoft Safety Scanner, none of which have found the Torpig Trojan (unless it's hidden somewhere and is not called 'torpig trojan' when found. I used combofix (as suggested by the Dorm IT guy) and this is the log... not sure what to do now. Is the Torpig gone already?

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Hi all,

this is my first post and I wish it was on better terms. I am getting pop ups telling me that I have Win32.trojan.rx My back round on my desk top turned red and I have no access to my task manager.

I have tried downloading DSS but cannot.

Things I have already tried (hopes this helps in coming to a quicker resolution)

1) Run Adaware in safe mode
2) Run Spybot in safe mode
3) Run Ez Armor virus scanner in safe mode
4) Run cc Cleaner in safe mode
5) Delete temporary internet files
6) down loaded but have not yet run AVG anti virus.
7) Looked for suppicious items in control panel (ad remove programs) found slotchbar but cannot remove it.
8) Made hidden files viewable

My biggest fear is that this trojan got a hold of my banking and credit information. Is there anyway to confirm?

Listed below is my Hijack this log. I know you are all very busy and appreciate your help.

On Tuesday a fast mp3 plugin was installed on my computer, since then and since Mozilla Firefox was opened for the first time I have been having alot of problems with my computer. I cannot access all of the internet pages I once could, a blank screen appears for some. I cannot uninstall any programs using add/remove, a couple of days ago my computer kept crashing and it said it recovered from a serious error. Symantec email windows kept popping up with spam, [I uninstalled then reinstalled Norton Antivirus and that stopped as well as the computer crashing], and my windows firewall said due to an unidentified problem it couldn't display settings. So many spyware trojans and viruses have been found with my Ad-Aware, Spybot, Norton Antivirus, Windows Defender, Xoftspy, and CCleaner programs all of which fail to eliminate all of the spyware and viruses. There were so many things found I couldn't name them all but some that kept popping up were Trojan Anserin, Downloader, Haxdoor, Torpig, Killsec, Spydoctor2006, and windowssecuritycenterfirewalldisabled. How can I get rid of all these problems, I just took my computer to a repairman a month ago for basically the same problems, he installed CCleaner to help with these problems but it hasn't worked. He also installed Mozilla Firefox which I just opened, I was wondering if this could also be causing problems. Please help, I don't want to have to take my computer back to the shop again. A:Torpig, Trojan Anserin, Killsec And Many Other Viruses And Spyware Found On Computer After Fast Mp3 Plugin Installation

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum. My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today. It is a good idea to print off these instructions:This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above. A print out of the instructions would be a good reference to make sure you don't yet lost. Also, it is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and also that you don't miss any steps out!If you have any queries about the process or just general questions, just ask.Your system is terribly infected. The problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show. Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution. So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused... Read more

Hiya

Putting this in here, in case other miss it, as its also in Security. Sticking for a week

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Step-by-Step Interactive Training because of the way that Step-by-Step Interactive Training handles bookmark link files. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a malicious bookmark link file that could potentially allow remote code execution if a user visited a malicious Web site or opened a malicious attachment that was provided in an e-mail message. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. However, user interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability.
Affected Software:

• Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
• Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Service Pack 1 (Itanium)

Hello i Want to know how to update my Lumia 521 to Windows 10,
that is working now !!!

A:How to update my Lumia 521 to Windows 10 Step by Step Guide that works 2016!

I wondered the same about a Lumia 520, then found that if it can be done at all, it can only be done with difficulty, and little certainty of success. If I recall right, it requires bootloader unlocking, and changing the phone's identity to fool the update server into thinking that it qualifies for a W10 upgrade. Hi,
First let me say that I am not a computer expert, so I am not especially well-versed in all of the computer jargon. I apologize in advance for that. I have an Inspiron All-in-One 2330 that is about 2.5 years old.  I recently noticed that the left side of the screen was looking blurry, so I ran a diagnostic test. Apparently the hard drive is operating outside of the parameters or words to that effect. It is recommended that I replace my hard drive.
I am not inside the warranty, so I have to do it myself. This scares me. Can someone point me in the direction of explicit instructions of (1) how to actually replace the hard drive, and (2) how to put the operating system (Windows 10) back on my computer.  I am currently backing up my files, so that is one thing I know how to do!
Thanks in advance.

I've always wanted to know how to do this on my own. Could someone give me step by step instructions on how to completely erase all information from one of my hard disks (I have two) and leave all the information on the other disk. Then how to re-install windows XP and all the necessary drivers etc. Then (I know this is really getting complex) could someone tell me the best possible anti-virus software and anti-spyware software available (preferably free). And I don't think I need a firewall because I have a router, am I correct? Finally I would like to know how to create and employ a rescue-disk. Thank-you so much for the help, I will probably use this info for years to come.

Hello,

I have created and stored images of my C and D (restore partition on C: drive) drives (using Macrium Reflect) on an external drive in case of an emergency.

I thought, it will be better to have a step-by-step guide in case my hard drive fails. My experience tells me that though these things sound simple, in reality they are NOT that simple when done hands on.

Is there such a guide or a link to such a guide ?

Thanks a LOT

Was soooo much easier with Win 98. The only one I can get to install successfully is the 52.16 (nvidia) from the Win update site.
The others I have downloaded(from nvidia) will not install, no matter what hoops I jump through.

Here is the way I am trying it...what am I doing wrong?

First I uninstall the nvidia drivers in "add, remove...etc.

Reboot to safe mode and use a driver remover program.

Reboot and try to cancel the "new hardware found" message, and run the "exe" file for the XP certified drivers I have downloaded...reboot...No drivers installed

Then, I reboot and let Windows try to use the "new hardware found" program...and point it to the driver files I have downloaded...and it says they are not compatible(nvidia says they are "certified for XP" so why do I get this message?

There has got to be an easier way to update your video card drivers than this mess!

Windows 7 (not sure if 32 or 64)

Anyway out of nowhere my disk space has almost reached it's maximum 447GB. I am limited to certain things I can do on my computer.

I would appreciate step by step guide on how to solve this error as I am a computer noob. Also if you suggest I should use some partition analyser etc. I can only use free-one so if you can list one which is good/virus-free and safe to use, please do so.

Thank you.

Hey all, after spending the better part of today trying to fix my computer, I'm now posting here in hopes someone more knowledgeable can help me out. I have what I think is a trojan or a rootkit infecting my computer, and it seems like with everything I try, it's always one step ahead of me.I'm running XP Home with SP2. Unfortunately I haven't had the disk for a long time, and I'm hoping I can get by without having to buy a new one. Here a small recap of SOME of the things I've tried, in no particular order...HijackThis - works, I can post a log if needed.MalwareBytes - works, gotten rid of some things, detects but can't get rid of uacinit.dll however, it comes backComboFix - opens after renaming, but tells me AVG is running though I'm pretty sure it isn't. Crashes the computer if I try to run it anyway.I've also cleaned up all temp files/cookies/etc.I've tried numerous other programs, many won't open due to various errors.Symptoms:- Originally, Windows ended up freezing. After rebooting, I'd get about 10 seconds on the desktop before it froze again - the mouse however still worked. After more reboots, I started getting a black screen after things loaded, mouse still worked, nothing else did. I managed to get into Safe Mode with networking, cleaned things up a bit, then managed to get back into regular mode for a while. Not sure what changed, but now when I try to boot in regular mode, Windows stops at the Welcome screen; mou... Read more

Hello. Here is my situation.

My desktop is gone. Now I have this black screen and a message in red letters saying that my IP address has been used by someone else (something like that).

Right away when Windows starts up, some pop window says something about 'nursr' starting up too.

I have been infected with Adware & Trojan Downloader. After finding this website and reading about Trojans, I learned how to sign in on 'safe mode' and have also downloaded 'Autoruns'.

I guess my question is- Now that I have Autoruns, how do I determine what to get rid of? There are so many?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

A:Trojan Situation- A Question About The Next Step.

One thing you could do while in safe mode is to perform a "system restore".
Once in safe mode you can then access system restore just as you would normally from the Windows XP desktop (Start>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore).

Post back with whether the restore was successful or not. Be sure to restore to a date before you got infected.

Hi. Over the past couple of days, Windows Defender has notified me of Trojan threats which I 'removed'. I have AVG 8.5 but at the moment, it won't scan for me (trying to look into this problem) so I can't scan my whole computer for a virus.

I read through the 'NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help' thread but both programs didn't work for me. When I run the DDS program, something opens and then closes immediately. As for GMER, I can't seem to extract it anywhere and keep receiving error messages :S

I'm not sure whether it could be linked to a virus but on numerous occasions in the past few days, I receive an error message telling me that Windows has encountered a 'critical error' and needs to restart in 1 minute on start up. I was told to post in here about this problem in case it was linked to a possible virus threat.

I apologise for having very little knowledge in this area but any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

System Requirements

To run the sample XML Web services and client programs that we create throughout the book, you'll need a computer running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP. You'll also need Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, which includes a complete installation of the Microsoft .NET Framework. Finally, you'll need Internet Information Services (IIS) to provide access to your Web services. Both Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP operating systems include IIS version 5.0.

Note: You must have the CreditCardValidator.dll file to build the XML Web service examples contained in the book. You can obtain the library by downloading the code above, or create it using the code in the book and the instructions in Appendix A.

I just received in the mail 1 new 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD, 1 WD Black Caviar Drive (to match the existing 1TB WD Black Caviar drive I currently use), I also have a clean 1TB WD Caviar Blue drive I can use for what ever and an external 1TB USB 3.0 Passport for any drive imaging of file back ups etc. My rig specs are attached below. I currently have all my information on the one WD Black drive including the OS. I got these two new drives to enable a seperate SSD Boot/OS drive and to reconfigure my existing WD drive into a RAID 0 with the new drive while maintaining existing information (programs and documents) if possible. I am not anywhere near an expert, but do have some experience with hardware and configuration (I built my current rig) so a good set of instructions from an expert would be all I need. I see all the high scores for WEI and when benchmarking seperate SSD drives for OS and RAID 0 configurations that I am excited to give the new drives a try. I am sorry if this is a redundant thread, but I did look for and search for some time to find a thread I could use. I will check back often to answer any questions. Thanks!

A:I need step-by-step instructions for new Boot/OS SSD & RAID 0 Platters

Hi Chris,

Nice new gear. Lets see if we can get your system setup and running nicely.

Firstly, a quick question: I assume you want to do a fresh, clean install of Windows 7 to your SSD? In that case, my recommendation is to:

SSD

1. Unplug any existing HDD's.
2. Install the SSD drive, and then follow this tutorial to install Windows 7 to it:

Clean Install Windows 7

3. Allow Windows to complete all the updates it wants.
4. Install any applications - your drive is quite large, so there is plenty of room for Office etc. and don't forget the anti-virus software of your choice.

The RAID0

If I understand you correctly, you want to add an additional drive to your exitsing drive to create a RAID0 array and still preserve whats on it at the moment. Unfortunately, and I am happy to stand corrected, I do not think that is possible - in a RAID0 the data etc. is spanned across both disks, but at the moment it is written to a single platter.

My approach to this would be:

1. Copy all your data from the existing platter to the USB external drive BEFORE you install the SSD.
2. Reconnect your original HDD and install the new HDD. Boot the PC, and in the BIOS configure the RAID controller and add these two disks to the RAID.
3. Boot the computer. Once in Windows, in Disk Management, configure a simple drive, and partition as appropriate.
4. Now copy all your data back from the USB to the new RAID0.
5. If you like, you can also install applications to this RAID0 array.

A:Need Step by Step Help removing my front usb port from my computer

I wish there was a step by step guide but sometimes just opening the case and looking at what you have and what it's connected to and how it's attached to the casing is all you need to do. Jazz

I have a dead computer. I bought a new one. I need the files from the dead one. The power supply does not work on the old one. The old one is an emachine T2482. The new one is Dell Inspiron 518. The old one had XP the new one is Vista. I am very hopeful that someone will be able to direct me to a video or step by step instructions. I follow instructions fairly well.

I will try to be to the point here. A while back I had a problem with my computer and slicked the hard drive, and when I went to reload, I realized I did not have some of the drivers for the system. I tried to download drivers for my CD Rom and CD Burner, and found the one I needed. It was a dos based program and seemed to be loading the drivers needed, but upon restart, this is all I get:

IBM
Starting Windows 98
LITE-ON IDE CD-ROM DEVICE DRIVER VERSION 2.1
COPYRIGHT (C) LITEON TECHNOLOGY CORP. 1994-1996 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
PRIMARY MASTER
PRIMARY SLAVE
SECONDARY MASTER CD WRITER IDE 8X32 1.5
15.
SECONDARY SLAVE _

And then the computer will not continue to load windows. I can start it by doing the step by step option and answering no to any question regarding my CD drives. I also can not find my sound card. I am quite the novice when it comes to computers and I guess one day I will learn to leave well enough alone, but until then, I could really use some help. My system is as follows,

Win 98se
566 intel celeron
40 gig hard drive
CDWriter IDE 8x32
LITE-ON

A:Windows 98se will not load without me doing step by step logon

What you need is an OEM WIN98SE boot up and install floppy.

With this floppy you boot from it and it sets up windows for you into audit mode.

You only have to press the key once during the entire operation

email me at [email protected] and I'll send you a zipped copy of this wonderful little friend!

Folks,

I'm at a complete loss here.

Apparently, it's possible to host a single website on my XP Pro installation using IIS. (I'm connected to a T1 line, so it should be okay).

Shockingly enough, I can't find any step by step instructions anywhere on how to figure out the URL of this website that I'd create in XP Pro using IIS.

Your thoughts please...

Hi there,

Does anyone have a link to a tried and tested reformatting a Windows 2000 machine guide?

My pc is currently running Win2K and I want to reformat my hard drive and then reinstall Windows 2000 back on it.

I still have the Win2K CD, but i don't have a bootup floppy (not sure if needed?!).

Thanks guys

A:Step-by-step guide to reformatting with Windows 2000

Not real difficult.
Make sure you bios is set to boot from the CD-rom first and boot up the computer with the install cd in the drive. During the installation it will ask you if you want to remove any existing partitions. I usually remove any existing ones and create a new one and then format ntfs.

This is probably the link you want when you get there.

My current hard drive is in the process of failing. It is one of those partitioned hard drives with the OEM OS software (Windows Vista Home Premium) in a factory image on Drive D. Obviously, I need to purchase a new hard drive and install it in my PC.

But, I have a couple of basic questions:

1. Is it possible to install the OS mentioned above from the old drive to the new drive?

2. I have the product key for the OS on the side of the PC - will that work to reactivate the OS on the new drive?

Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated!

A:Help! Need step-by-step process for loading an OS on a new hard drive

Do you have an external drive? If so you can use a free program like Macrium Reflect or EaseUS ToDo Backup to make an image of your entire disk. The programs also have a means to burn a bootable CD or DVD with the restore program on it. When you get the new HD insert it in the machine and boot the CD. Restore from the external to the new HD. See the sites for the imaging program you choose for details like if the new drive has to be as large as if not larger than the original etc..

The advantage of doing this is that all your programs will still be installed. It's an image of the current state. That is if you think the HD is still good enough to boot and do the backup using the image program.

Saves a lot of installing and customizing to do imaging rather than factory restore.

Edit: before biting the bullet and swapping out the HD make sure you test the boot CD. Make sure it boots with the external drive plugged in and you can see the backup image on the external drive once you enter the restore program. If you can see everything then you should be OK. Just back out of the restore or remove the CD and reboot.

Hello, I need help with step by step instructions on how to use Hiren's cd to correct the lsass exe error.

This is what happened:
My system crashed, got blue screen error <windowsroot>\system32\hal.dll

I followed the MS instructions.... which created the new problem "lsass.exe, password not valid, reboot). I am running XP PRO, because of this error I can't boot up windows & I can't get into recovery console, don't have administrators password. I researched google and found Hiren's CD. Not sure exactly what to do from this point. I also found a possible solution on google:

Working Solution! - Without swapping HDD, re-installing windows or losing data.

This is what worked for me.

Requirements:
1) System Restore enabled in windows.
2) NTFS Dos Pro and a Boot CD/Disk - Preferabbly Hiren's Boot C (which is loaded with all the apps you need). Hiren's Boot CD (http://thanki.tk or torrentspy.com)
3) Don't use the system.bak file located in windows\repair.
4) Don't assume that either of the _regis~1, ~2, ~3 or ~4 files in a RP\Snapshot folder are the registry files you need - they are not.

Steps.
1) In your BIOS, set 1st boot device to CD.
2) Reboot with Hiren's Boot CD (or similar).
3) Load NTFS DOS Pro. (in the NTFS Ext2Fs Tools menu on the Hiren CD). You can skip Checkdisk
(use pro instead of regular NTFS as it lists long file name details)
4) Once loaded, the 2nd last line of text indicates the new temporary drive letter of you... Read more

I have perused the forums and see that a lot of people are experiencing a similar problem. My laptop is infected (episodically) with Trojan.Vundo and occasionally with other malware like Adclicker.PurityScan and Downloader. I am running Symantec Antivirus and it successfully detects Vundo, quarantines the file(s), but does not remove the threat. I have used Symantec's FixVundo.exe and it does not detect or remove the file. I have followed the advice listed in several other threads about running ComboFix and HJT and posted the logs (below). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I have carried out the 5 step process as suggested by Microbell in response to my last posting (Laptop going slow) or as much as I could as the slowness of my laptop made some of the processes impossible. I have started a new thread showing the trojan in the title as suggested.

Here are the details and also my hijackthis log at the end:

1) Running the scanners
Only one adware/spyware was found and removed with the CWShredder.

2) Run antivirus/spyware scan
I tried to run the online scans but my laptop was running to slow to complete them as I kept getting non-responding browsers. However my Norton viris scan identified DOWNLOADER Trojan Horse. It gave me instructions to remove it but I have not done this yet as I wanted to ask for more advice first.

3) Unistall Malware from Windows Add/Remove Programme tab
I found and removed the following:
My Web Search (My Fun Cards)
My Way Search Assistant
Viewspot Media Player

4) Search For Rougue and Suspect Programmes
I could not find any of these on my system.

5) Update your system
I checked the Critical updates for my system (I have automatic updates set up). There was only one to be loaded - Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) which I updated successfully. I looked for SP1a but did not try to load this as it is 125mb and my laptop would not have had the speed/power to do this with it's current problem. If you think I should do this I will try again but it will probably crash again.

A:Dell WD15 Desktop Dock - Step-by-step driver/firmware/BIOS installation instructions for XPS, Latitude and Precision notebooks [UPDATED 04-22-16]

Hi Brian
Thanks for being active on this issue. (This thread was closed - so had to use the TB-15 Thunderbolt thread above this one). Thanks for opening this one for WD-15
I've been having  most of the problems mentioned in the other Thunderbolt dock  thread .. USB problems, fan noise, not recognising on startup,
I tried the driver list above (for 5510 win7 64) and some refused to install because they were for xps product not  precision. However I when on 5520 support page (for the nth time) and found a new USB driver. ie > Chipset_Driver_V2WY5_WN32_1.16.32.1_A01.EXE
I've installed that but NOPE ... still has USB problems eg stuff like usb (2) keyboard not working. BUT unplug/replug the dock at USB C connection at laptop and it works !! (but this is a PITA and probably will wreck the socket in the long run).
I guess my point is please sync the support page and this support forum if you can, we all love Dell but would appreciate some reciprocating :-)

Just found some more info: MS includes the SBSI tutorial with the boxed set of XP and Office. Dell and Gateway install it on some of their computers. Gateway puts it in the .CAB files so the customer will have it after a reinstall. With Dell, when you reinstall you've lost the program.

The environment I am setting up is a 1 w2k server (all updates, active directory is on, DHCP is on, DNS is on, and setup as Primary Domain Controller) 4 winxp pro clients. All my goal is, is to setup file sharing and internet sharing from the 2k server to the xp clients. I have the internet sharing down. the file sharing is where I am having difficulty. I want to setup a login script for all my users to share out 3 shares. 1 is a public dir for documents, 1 for user profiles and 1 for the medical app. (I know what I have to share). I need someone to give me some step by step instructions on how to accomplish this. #1 Where on the server do I put my login scripts? Is this put locally on the clients? If so where? If not, where on the server should they reside? I want a dos box to pop up on the screen after I login to the domain and show all the mappings. What syntax do my login scripts need in order for them to map to the right share. #2 How do I know and what do I check to ensure my dns is functioning correctly so my clients recognize my domain?

This is all that I need. I would appreciate any help given and would welcome any solutions to my issue. I need clear and a concise answer please. Dont assume I know anything except basic networking.

My domain is "DENTIST"
My DC dns name is "SERVER"
My public share is "Idontknow,whatshoulsitbe... Read more

This last week I trashed the Dell Dimension 2350 that I had used for years when I had
a rash of functional problems with it, a few of which Techguy solved for me, and others that simply became time consuming and made it no longer worthwhile keeping the machine.

I bought Dells 530s less costly computer which is due to be delivered today or Monday and the question I have pertains to the easiest way to install my currently "in use" internet connection that functions quite well on my spare computer..also a DEll model C521.

The same modem and router that currently works on the 521 was working well on the old PC that's been discarded...On both pcs, I had to phone and "get walked through" the installation of the intenet set up by one of Embarq's tech guys...The instruction sheet that came with the original subscription to the Embarq service for internet seems simple enough but didn't work for me on either of the pcs and required about a half hour on the phone with the Embarq tech in order to get it to work.

"Step by step"... can you do it?

If you are concerned about keeping your information private, then here is an easy step-by-step guide to securing your computer for free!

Below is a list of 'must haves' that work together and once installed, will make your system very secure and very difficult to compromise. It was difficult figuring out what is really free. Many products claim to be free software only to find later that they are limited or biased in some way. Everything I have listed below is 100% free (no time limits, no registration requirements, no ads, etc) at the time of this post.

First, you need a firewall to block most intruders. A great free firewall that has most features anyone would need is Outpost. Another is Kerio Personal Firewall.

After you install your firewall, you must put it to the test to make sure it's working. You'll want to scan your ports and test your browser security. Poor browser configurations can make any firewall useless. A great free site that checks security and verifies your privacy is AuditMyPC.com. Another good site is TestMyFirewall.com.

Now you need something to stop the pop-up advertisements, etc. An excellent Popup Test is available at PopupCheck.com and also lists the top ten free popup blockers. Many popup blockers are too restrictive and may block good popups such as information screens, etc. If you already have a popup blocker, then run it through this test to make sure it's doing a good job.

If you really want to hide your information... Read more

I have a windows 7 computer and I am trying to set it up so I can remote desktop into it. I have run TSweb in the past but I was told I need to use RDweb. The way i use it is with internet explorer and the IP address of the machine. It is like I am sitting
in front of the computer but I am remotely.
Where can I find the instructions to set it up or can somebody provide the step by step instructions?

FYI: I tried to get it from Microsoft but they are total morons and I got transferred 12 times as nobody knew anything about it.

How do i set up the dns right? What other requirements do I need to meet before I can successfully add a computer to a domain? I am interning at a computer company and need to figure this out..... I don't speak much technology language yet so the more simple instructions the better!!!! THANKS!!!!

A:step by step for adding a computer to a domain

Make sure you are connected to the network before attempting these instructions.

To add a computer to a domain you need to have that domain's admin username and password or your username should be a member of the domain admin group. (local admin will not work).

Your domain should be setup for DNS server and DHCP server to issue these values when a client computer attempts to connect it.

Before you attempt to connect to the Domain Server's Active Directory, go to the connected network adapter's IP settings and set "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

Right click on Computer icon either on desktop or inside start menu, and in the system properties, click on Advanced System Settings.

Go to the first tab (Computer name) and click on Network ID button. This will start a wizard, which will guide you through various steps involved in joining to an existing domain.

You can also use the Change button and enter the Domain name in the member of Domain field and click enter. This will ask you for the domain admin's username and password. Enter them and after authentication the computer will join the Domain and you will get a dialog box saying "Welcome to Domain (Domain name)". If the system could not find the domain's active directory then an error message will pops up. You need to fix the error and try again.

I have found them both to be very beginner friendly.

We have a desktop with xp and 2 laptops with windows 7 home premium. The xp machine is connected to dsl and a 4 in1 printer. A linksys router connects to the laptops. I have tried several times ( maybe too many ) to set up this home network.

I would like to let them share files and the printer. The best I have managed is that the xp machine can see all 3 in the workgroup under my network places. A login window comes up for laptop #2 but #1 brings up an error message stating that it is not accessable and the network path was not found.

The windows 7 machines both see each other, but neither sees the xp machine.

I would like to start all over to connect them. Is there a good step by step description of the procedure for this?

Thanks for your time,

Warren

A:Looking for a step by step to network XP and Windows 7 machines

First, the XP systems need to have SP3 to enable Win7 to find and share with them.
This will install a few new services like Link-Layer Discovery - - be sure that is left AUTOSTART.

Second, make sure all systems have the same WORKGROUP name;
XP and Win7 have different defaults, so change one to match the other.

Third enable print/file sharing on all systems. This will open the Windows Firewall ports required.
If you have a third party firewall, then here are the generic rules:
assuming your router address is 192.168.1.1 (the important part is in bold) then

allow in tcp/udp source=192.168.1.* ports=137,137,139,445
allow out tcp/udp destination=192.168.1.* ports=137,138,139,445
the src/dest addresses lock out any other addresses and keeps sharing localized to your lan

The above is the Network Access side of sharing.

Now you need to setup the shared folders and the NTFS side.
This will control the <everyone> permission setting as read vs r/w - -
but use the Sharing Tab on the properties of the specific folder.
DO NOT share the C: drive itself.

I'm new here, don't even know if posting in the right place ?

I'm 54 old & I've been given this computer ( used pc but all loaded & ready ) from a friend.

I am totally new at this except I've been watching friends for 5 years
My pc is a 933 mhz, 128 ram, 2 hard disks(30 gig & 20 gig )
PS I feel like an old fool but gotta start somewhere
I have Nero 6 ultra edition installed, now how do I proceed step by step
thank you in advance for your assistance

A:How to burn pictures or programs step by step

I'm new here, don't even know if posting in the right place ?Hello, and welcome to bleepingcomputer.com, Genesis2004You have your own PC now, thats good. The best way to learn is on your own, with some giudance.Your post is in the forum where we discuss the (OS) Operating Systems. So, an appropriate question I ask you is which version od Windows do you use?My pc is a 933 mhz, 128 ram, 2 hard disks(30 gig & 20 gig )Making it possible to do a lot of things.I have Nero 6 ultra edition installed, now how do I proceed step by stepThe next thing to identify, so we can help further, is what optical drive(s) do you have? The Nero program will require the hardware that uses optical lasers to "burn" information to CD-R, or DVD-R as the case my be.A CD-Rom can read the information, allowing you to place that information (data) on one or both of the hard drives, bu the -RW means "read & write".The writing of data to CD is where Nero excels.Data can be any number of different types. All files have extensions listed to the right of the "dot" in the filename. Those extensions indicate basically what "kinf" of file it is.What program made it, which program can 'use" it.An example would be music files. Some of them end in .wmp which means it is a WindowsMediaPlayer file.A CD when placed in the "tray" would likey mean a brief whirring noise,(the spinning of it) followed by a dialog box asling what you would like to do with it... I just got an Apple Powerbook G4 and would like to set up a wireless home network with a desktop running Windows XP. I don't know where to begin!!
Would anyone have any information (or know where I could get information) about doing this?
This is a atupid question, but here goes: does the main desktop PC have to be powered on in order for the laptop to use the wireless connection (Internet), or is it just the router that's on?
What is the best router to buy?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!!

A:Step by Step Instructions for Wireless Networking

If you have a router (and modem) or combined modem/router then it is just those devices that need to be on in order for any PC to reach the internet. You do not need any particular PC to be on in order for any other PC to get on-line.

The exception to this would be if you are NOT using a router, but were instead using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) software in a PC to share the internet connection in which case, of course, the PC running ICS would always need to be on in order for any other PCs on the network to get on-line.

I now know the 14 page Preparation Guide For use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help by hard. I have performed all the prep work necessary to create DDS, Ark and Attach logs, and either copy/paste or upload as required in step 9 - Create a new malware removal topic and post the DDS logs and the GMER log. But time and time again when it comes to the ultimate final step, clicking on the Post New Topic button to actually post my new topic to the forums, I am instatly met with a "Internet Explorer cannot be found" error page instead of seeing the Bleepingcomputer.com web page. Can the Browser Hijack software that has infected my PC actually be defending itself so I cannot get back to Bleepingcomputer.com? Unless someone here suggests a fix or workaround, I will have to copy/paste my DDS log and upload my GMER logs to a thumb drive then logon and submit from another PC.
