Compaq Presario CQ40 laptop won't repair or run XP install

Q: Compaq Presario CQ40 laptop won't repair or run XP install

I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!

A: Compaq Presario CQ40 laptop won't repair or run XP install

Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.

First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.
You can check your HP/compaq PC here:

NOTE: Please read this thread fully.

If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.

I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.

I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.

The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have Compaq Presario CQ40, windows 7 laptop.3GB RAM,320 GB Hard Disk.
Since past few days i m facing this problem, whenever i put on my laptop, and when the desktop opens, my laptop hangs in another 1 or 2 minutes. i have tried this around 5-6 times and still there isn't any improvement. i have also tried to set my computer to an earlier restore point, and have done this twice, still no improvement.

Shall i run recovery, i m afraid of data loss.

Can any 1 guide me what could be the cause, and what could be the solution.

So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at

Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!

A:Can I install windows7 to my HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX?

How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.

Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.

NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.

P.S sorry for the late reply

I want to perform a Windows repair on a Compaq Presario desktop computer but the person doesn't have an OS CD. I think what Compaq does is put the setup files for windows on a seperate partition so you install it using their recovery console. However, if you do this then it reformats the hard drive no matter what. This is NOT what I want to do. So my question is, if I can get my hands on a Windows XP Home full install CD (The computer came with Home) and enter in the CD key that came on the side of the Compaq, will it work correctly? Thanks.

Product Name and NumberHP Compaq Presario CQ40 (339TU) Operating System installed  Windows 8 Pro (recently re-installed) Any changes made to your system before the issue occurredAccidentally deleted the system reserved partition (approx. 300MB) The IssueI have recently re-installed the OS on my notebook (the previous OS was the same). I wanted to do a clean install and I accidentally deleted the System Reserved partition which was approximately 300MB in size. The install completed without any problem. Hi everyone,

It seems like the BSOD is chasing me...

This time it's about my own laptop.

Its a Compaq cq40 and It's been acting very strange since a couple of weeks.

Suddenly a BSOD will come up and restar my computer.... but I can still use it...

I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....

I'm posting the dump files...

Thanks in advance!

A:BSOD Compaq cq40

It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.

Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!

Post back if you need more help or if you are ready to continue.

I am trying to re-format my hard drive with my original HP XP Home SP2 cd. It loads the files and then it shows" windows is starting". Then it goes back to the boot automatically and starts the install again. I have tested the hd with a re-generator and checked the 1GB ram, motherboard. All shows good. my OE cd is sp2 that I am is a 160g Western Digital pata drive. The bios is set to boot from cd first and hdd second. I also swapped out the optical drive to eliminate that possibility. I made a copy of the OS cd and tried that as well. Be advised that I checked the hd integrity with a hard disk re-generator program and it tested ok. I also used mem test 86 and ran it for 30 min with no errors. On this last try, I get this error: "error loading operating system" "press any key to reboot cd." but now it won't even boot my cd software. Now it finally is back to the reboot cycle again. Also, I did a Dariks boot and nuke to get a clean partition. I attached a usb drive adapter to the removed hd and plugged it into an old laptop. I d/l the WD h/d diagnostics file to my flash drive and ran the tests from there...the drive test was successful...I would appreciate any suggestions.

You may need to disable the original webcam

You can disable it by going to: Device Manager (Start->Run-> Devmgmt.msc)

Then locating your Webcam (that you don't want to use) and then right click on it and select disable

Then go back to MSN and use the settings to set up the new webcam

Hello All, I am a newbie here and I would like to say thank you in advance to all you great people who provide such terrific support!

I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR1834NX Desktop PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Ver. 5.1.2715.3011 (xpsp(wmbla).061009-1511 Update Rollup 2.

I am suddenly missing items in the start menu, ie., accessories is missing entries such as under system tools it's blank and many other start up items. Also I am missing some control panel items. What I think has happened is the operating system has had some files erased or corrupted. There are just so many things missing that used to be listed makes me believe that is whats wrong.

How can I restore the original operating system or repair it without losing all of my current data and programs?

No cd's were shipped with my computer but there was directions for making a compaq cd/dvd recovery set
I made dvd recovery disks when the computer was new and I believe there are also recovery files on the secret partition, but I do not want to do a full restore with formatting the drive etc. I just want to repair the operating system if possible.

I tried doing several system restore points, but it does not replace what is missing.

Ok guys, im new here so i hope you can help me to figure this out.

I have been more than 3 days fighting with this an my options now are CERO. My problem:

Im formatting and reinstalling a fresh Windows XP on a Compaq Presario SR1923WM desktop, the first installation process that copies the files to the hard drive its fine, the problem starts when xp starts to install devices, it firstly was stopping at 35 minutes, i tried to find out the problem opening the setupapi.log, then i did erase the .inf causing the trouble and nothing. By the was i was using aXP version.

Then i tried with another disc, this time a Windows XP for HP machines, this times the minutes went down completely, the progress bar reached the 1% and then again showed me one gray screen and the system was hanging again.

Then, i figure out that the initial XP installed on the machine was the Windows XP Media Center Editio 2005, so i tried to install this with an OEM disc and then again it started to hang at 35 minutes.

I have tried other XP disc and nothing happens, i just can't get any OS installed on this PC.

Any help would be so much appreciated!

Sorry for my grammar im not native english speaker.

#1. ATI Rage Pro 8mb AGP: Installed to AGP slot and rebooted. Computer hangs at "COMPAQ" boot up screen and will go no further. Uninstalled Rage and disabled on-board video in hardware profiles and rebooted with same results. How the heck do I disable on-board video and get the AGP slot active?

#2. Diamond Monster 3D 2 12mb PCI. I installed it into the PCI slot and it was found by XP as a generic device but is no longer supported in the XP environment. No drivers available anywhere. I know I have to buy a new card but I don't want to drop some money on a new card and have my Compaq reject it like the older ATI card I have. I only want to play Diablo II as this machine is not powerful enough for any of the other cool games coming out(DOOM 3) so I need advice picking out a new 3d accelerator card. How many sticks of ram do you have? If 2, take one out and try, and if the install fails switch it with the other.

Make a Memtest86 disk and test your ram.

Do not have anything extra plugged in (USB ports etc) that you don't need to boot.

Do you hear the fan running on the laptop come on when you power up? (If it is overheating, the computer itself does not need to feel "hot" -- it could be any of the components on the motherboard, especially the processor).

Hi, my laptop key fell off the keyboard, and I cannot figure out how to pop it back in. Everything looks to be in working condition, and even the white plastic components have remained on the keyboard. Unfortunately, every single time I press down on the black key, it never actually clicks on.  I've come to the conclusion that there must be some unique process to re-adjusting a key on this notebook. I've searched around on keyboard websites, but their guides do not seem to directly address my situation. They usually end with just pressing down on the key, which does not work for my specific notebook, it'd seem. I'd appreciate any advice.

When I originally got it from a friend a few years back,it had a bogus XP Pro OS on it so another friend gave a valid copy & I put it on & all went great till about 15 months ago when it mysteriously crashed. I suspect an angry (mentally ill) neighbor possibly used a flashdrive because when I rebooted it, it didn't.
I don't remember what it said on the screen but I did use the CD my other friend gave me to try to re install the OS & even after reformatted the harddrive,it said it couldn't proceed.
Well, I knew I had a recovery CD package but couldn't find it till tonight. On the triple CD set,it says ;
"HP Pavilion recovery. Below that,it says These CD's contain a backup copy of all software originally installed and can ONLY be used with an HP Pavilion PC".
So, my question is do you think it'll work or not? TIA

I have a 3 year old compaq presario CQ60-417DX. The laptop was in sleep mode (or whatever it's called when the power is on but the lid is closed), and had been on for about an hour when I opened the lid. The screen automatically turns on when you open the lid, and it did that, but when it did so there was a lot of digital interference. That is, the screen was all scrambled and the pattern changing rapidly. Then the scrambling disappeared briefly and the logon screen appeared, but then it became scrambled again. I quickly closed the lid and that's when I saw some whisps of smoke coming out the back vent. It returned to sleep mode but I wanted to turn it off, so as fast as possible I opened the lid and held the power button several seconds until it shut off. I can smell that something burned but only when I hold my nose to the vent. I want to make clear that only a few months ago I used an air can to spray out the dust and there was no overheating problem.

What could it be that burned and that would cause interference with the monitor? I really do not want to have to send the laptop somewhere to be fixed. If I could just access the hard drive somehow I can transfer all I need to another disk and get a new laptop. The operating system appeared to be fine. If I turn the computer back on but hook up an external monitor am I risking damaging the hard drive?

A:compaq presario laptop smoking!

take the hard drive out before you try to power on

first open it up and see if you can see what shorted out,you should see something showing signs of burning discoloration

providing it was not the hard drive you can get the stuff off later,by slaving it or using an external connector

The other day I left my laptop on overnight and died cuz I didnt have the power cord plugged in and it wouldn't come back from standby in the morning even after I gave it power. After plugging it in, I powered it off by holding the on button for about 5 secs. When I turned it back on, I'd get 2 short beeps, LED lights on, and fan spinning, but nothing on the display. I've tried plugging it into an external monitor but nothing showed up. After testing for awhile, I noticed that when I plug my power cord into the laptop from a completly shut off state, the computer automatically starts up and gives me the same symptoms again. That's kinda strange that plugging the laptop to power = turn on instantly. Anyone know what's goign on here?

My hitachi starts up when I plug it in.
I always assumed it was because it doesn't have a battery.
Never did.
You might want to run a full charge cycle on the battery and see if
it is still holding a charge.
then try it.

I have a Compaq presario cq60-210us notebook pc. I have been hanging problems with the keyboard functioning properly. Most keys do not work, but the ones that do I'll have multiple letters, numbers when pressing one key; for instance, when pressing n it'll come up n6jm7u. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard software with no luck. Not sure if I'm doing this properly, but the diy videos seem straight forward. Any ideas?

I bought a Compaq Presario laptop a while ago (at least 2 years) and since then have traded it for something else to a friend of my now ex-wife. The screen quit working for the person so I bought it back for the charger which I needed anyways.

When I shine a light on the screen I can see everything and the computer works fine. What I want to know is if there are any settings on the computer that could be causing it to do this or if the screen is simply shot. Any help would be appreciated; I tried adjusting the brightness from the [Fn] + F7 and [Fn] + F8 keys but that didn't work.

A:Compaq Presario - Laptop Screen Help

Is there a brightness slider on the side of the screen on that one? Otherwise it sounds like the backlight has gone. You might be able to get that repaired.

Any help is welcome!!

I have purchased a new WD Hard Drive(60 GB) which I wanted to install on my Compaq preasrio (5BW160). This has a CD-ROM Drive and a CD-RW drive. On opening the machine, I found that the available bay beneath the Floppy drive does not accomodate the Hard Drive. And there is no existing place elsewhere to install this hard drive. Could somebody please help out by letting me know as to where this drive needs to be placed. Are there any other precautions which i need to consider?? While searching the Compaq website, found something vague about a railing which needs to be purchased(though I have no idea where from??).

Thanks in advance

A:How do I install second hard drive on Compaq Presario (5BW160)

Hi there Mohan
Try one of the local pc shops for the rails for mounting your new HD.....if they dont have any they might be able to give you some suggestions on how or where to get them.

I had a simular situation on a friends pc (hp with a mini tower) and I was able to use a stacking bracket from an old case that I had and it mounted horizontal just fine ...kinda depends on the room that u have in the case ....some even mount vertically.

just some ideas for you

good luck with it

No Windows 10 install method has worked on my Compaq Presario SR1913WM.My first attempt/preferred method was a clean Win10 32-bit install from ISO burnt to DVD-R (since the SR1913WM's USB ports are not recognized by any Win10 install method [hence I attach a PS/2 keyboard to install]):With "Custom" (aka clean) install I get the error"We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click Load driver"but when I then select a DVD-R folder full of all the "Vista" driver EXE files for the SR1913WM, (which I figured were a better choice than the only other option, XP drivers) I get the error message "No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, then click OK." (whether or not I check "Hide drivers that aren't compatible with this computer's hardware.").(Is there a way to get the actual driver INF file out of the EXE?  Running them didn't extract any files [whichI could find, anyway], and the old 'change the extension to ZIP' trick didn't work either.)With the "Keep personal files and apps" install, it told me to run setup from the inside 8.1, however that also results in an error message whether from the DVD-R or the Win10 Upgrade Microsoft's popup *offered* (I hear that's a good sign) in the OS, specifically either:1.  "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. I have been able to get the case open enough to access the Hard Drive but can't figure out how to get all of the way to the battery which, I believe, is very near the back of the unit under the hinges to the screen.
If I were able to remove the screen, I might be able to get that part of the case apart.

COMPUTER: Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop running Win XP, Svc Pack 2.

For no apparent reason, the computer malfunctioned, and when booting, goes through the following sequence:

1. The COMPAQ screen?blank screen with COMPAQ in middle.

2. Error Msg: We are sorry for the inconvenience, but Windows didn?t start successfully. A recent Hardware or software change might have caused this?and goes on to advise that if I don?t know what might have caused it, to choose to boot normally. Or I could arrow up to select to boot in Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Command Line. No matter which one I choose, the following occurs:

3. I get the Win opening screen

4. A couple of clicks in the computer and it shuts down. As it shuts down, a blue screen with some message flashed monentarily, but I can?t catch what it says.

I tried to boot in Safe mode manually (f8) boot no matter which of the options I choose after the Safe screen choices come up, the above sequence takes place.

I hit ESC during boot (or was it f2?), anyway, I got to Setup screen and performed the Drive Test, and got a ?Fail 1 ? 7? message.

So I changed the boot sequence to the CD, hoping I could boot from the repair disk, but the above sequence again took place.

Is there anything else I should do or check before changing the hard drive? Can a repair shop re-write the boot area? And BTW, if I swap the hard drive, do all drives come with standard boot sequences? I mean, if I boot from the CD containing the replac... Read more

hi, I am a newbie on this site. I have learned a lot just by reading the posts. Thank you all.
My compaq presario 2570us laptop has repeated--dc power jack failures. I am a VERY careful user.
1. Decided to try another approach = buy a port replicator from HP site...found one there hoping I could use the port replicator to power up, maybe it has a *better* jack outlet.??
2. Another idea = buy a second battery + a separate battery charger...keep charging the batteries, (outside the laptop) and get a possible 4 hour use of computer, and not use the power/jack + cord at all.
Any thoughts/ criticisms of these ideas?
There was a *port replicator*qestion on this board, re a Dell, + lo- a Dell advocate tech gave a wonderful there a compaq advocate aboard??

Recently I slipped and fell while carrying my Compaq Presario v4000 laptop and since then my perfectly working laptop was not right anymore. My laptop started freezing and hanging constantly. while working on a file or playing music it would freeze and hang until i turned it to an angle of 45 degrees to the right then it would work right. Even when i turned it on it would freeze. So I opened the back it to see if everything was okay and nothing was loose inside the laptop. I noticed that the hard disk was not all the way in at the connector. it was loose and I could see the pins so I pushed it in to make a full contact connection.

Then I closed the back and turned the laptop on. The laptop would not turn on. I heard the whirring sound of the fan come on and the hard disk made a clicking sound both the whirring sound of the fan and the click of the hard disk would stop at the same time. It continued on and off and would not stop both the whirring of the fan and the click sound of the hard disk. The power led light and the hard disk light were both yellow or amber in color and would come on and off with the whirring of the fan and clicking of the hard disk. Please help. OS - Windows xp

Ok I'm fixing this for my girlfriend's grandma and it's got a reboot loop it never gets as far as the windows logo with the blue bar going across the screen.

It just gives the safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, last known good config etc....

I figured I'd format and reinstall windows but it won't do it.

When I get to the point of pressing enter to set up windows when it boots from the cd it says 'setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer blah blah'

Does this mean the HD is dead completely now, any simple tricks I can do to sort it?

It's a crappy old laptop so no probs if not really worth fixing she can just get a new one.

My future mother-in-laws laptop kept locking up and shutting down on her after about 6-7 months of owning the unit. She sent it back to Compaq because it was still under warranty and the service report indicated that they had reset the memory and did a BIOS check and that it was tested as working. Shortly after that, the same issue started again. It is still not repaired and the warranty is up. I have already run the System Recovery disk and checked the memory. The fans are all working nad the unit does not appear to be overheating. It has stopped the random shut downs, but now it will lock up and the screen will become a mess of jagged lines and distorted imagery. I am thinking of either the board or the memory needing to be replaced at this point.

A:Compaq Presario F500 Laptop locking up

Appeal this to Compaq... as it is still part of the failed service they gave you, when the computer was not really fixed... How far out of warranty is it.. and how far back was the service repair... and please describe what you mean by "...lock up..." because other owners my have the same problem.

I have been trying to remove viruses on my Compaq Presario laptop, running Win XP. I have used AVG and Ad Aware, which both found LOTS of the trojan.pandex as well as trojan SHeur2, trojan Root-Kit and trojan Back Door. They have been put in the virus vault but my computer still has issues - such as:

Sound works everywhere EXCEPT on the internet (using IE6)

At start-up windows fails to load properly and just goes to gray screen - so I start in safe mode - run AVG - it finds another trojan entry and then I can start computer normally. Until the next time.. and the process starts all over again.

Symptoms were frequent crashing of Internet Explorer, missing .dll messages at start up, computer running very slowly.

I can run Hijack This, when I post it into a analyze log internet site, IE crashes.

Hi Guys,
I'm obviously not a genius when comes to computers, as indicated by me ignoring computer prompts that may have prevented me overloading my computers HDD I.e. messages such as Less than 10% of memory remain or words to that effect on both computers. I did try removing all unwanted programs and files from the HP COMPAQ Safe Mode before it finally shut down and would not re-boot ever again, same goes for the ACER Laptop, the HP COMPAQ was about 10 yrs old and ACER Laptop about 6 yrs old.
My question is how can I retrieve my files and get them onto an external Harddrive if the HDD are still OK that is on both computers I'm assuming they are.

A:Overloaded hdd on compaq presario pc & acer laptop

Get hold of the Ultimate Boot CD or similar and boot from it.
Then use the disk clean up tools from there. They should find loads of temporary files and caches to clear. If they do you should be able to boot back into Windows, but in any case you can attach your external drive and reboot the CD which should find it and allow you to copy data.

Greetings --

I am trying to upgrade a Compaq Presario V6000 laptop from 32-bit XP Pro SP3 to 64-bit Windows 8 Pro. This machine has an AMD Turion 64-bit CPU, ample RAM and HDD capacity. I am installing from the System Builder DVD.

Unfortunately the install is failing. After grinding away on the DVD for a very long time, finally I get the following message in a Windows 8-looking graphic:

"There was a problem with a device connected to your PC

"An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

"Error code: 0xc00000e9

"This problem can happen when a removable storage device is removed while it's in use or is failing. Properly connecting any removable storage and restarting your PC may fix this problem.

"Press Enter to try again

"Press F8 for Startup Settings"

There are no removable storage devices connected to the laptop. Neither of the 2 suggestions works, they just result in more grinding in the DVD drive and a return to the same error screen.

I just got through doing a successful install on a Presario V6700, which was also running 32-bit XP Pro SP3 previously. As far as I can tell the main difference between the two machines is that the good one has an Intel CPU and the problem one has an AMD Turion64 CPU. Both CPU's are 64-bit.

Letting XP complete boot-up and running the install DVD from Windows is not an option, since I'm trying to migrate from 32-bit to 64-bit and the OS won't allow it.

The BIOS allows booting from a USB ... Read more

Hello, all.

I am trying to install an ATI Rage 128 Pro 32MB PCI video card in my old Compaq Presario 7594 Desktop with onboard video running Win98. I have tried installing the card and the drivers and deleting the old drivers in just about every possible combination. Here's the problem - when the card is installed, I get no video on the monitor at all, even when the monitor is connected to the onboard video connector. The only setting in the BIOS that seems to have anything to do with video is under Advanced>PCI Devices>[Onboard] VGA. The default setting here seems to be "Disabled," but the only user-selectable settings are IRQ 3, 5, or 11.

The ATI driver installation program will not complete the install if the card is not in the slot, so I have installed the generic PCI Display Adapter driver, still with no luck.

I want to get this @!$% card installed so my son can play his sim games on this machine instead of my VAIO laptop.

Any suggestions?

So we set of. Ill describe the process. Take note of the ventilator. Mostly when it froze that was the cause, so i wont mention that every time.

It becomes warm pretty easily and while it performs well, I've heard that it extends life-expectancy greatly with high cooler temperatures. So far I haven't found anything able to change them for this specific computer, while on my Macbook ( schoolcomputer, don't blame me!) I just needed to install a third party, change RPM and target temp and then it was done, not even a reboot needed. Im using a cooler allready. Has anyone managed to do this? Im pretty experienced with managing my PC and the system, but I'd prefer to not meddle with registry and such. Thanks in beforehand!       /illirey

A:Fan settings on a Compaq Presario CQ57 Windows Laptop

Hi,CPU fan speed (RPMs) are managed by BIOS based on the CPU temprature. tweaking registry may not help manage the RPM. maximum you can achieve is, manage to cook the CPU which will heatup the processor more, which will make the heatsink FAN rotate at higher RPMs. which is anyways not going to solve issues. infact it can increase the troubles. however if you see any issues caused due to heating of notebook, you may wish to follow steps below and try to reduce the heat on the PC by cleaning heatsink etc...  Good Luck !!!!

Hi All,

Hope you can help me.

I have a Compaq Presario C300 Laptop which i am working on.

The screen is faint so at 1st i thought it would be the backlight or the inverter. I changed the inverter to a new working one and no change was seen. I then changed the screen to a working one and that still didn't fix the problem.

I have hooked up the computer to an external monitor and it works fine.

I now am unsure what the problem can be other than the cable.

Can anyone else give me an idea as to what the problem is?

Thank you in advance.

Hi, I had recently redone a friend's Compaq Presario Laptop after he had unallegedly ruined it by not taking care of it (spyware, viruses, etc. led to the operating system shooting itself).

After reinstalling Windows XP, installing securtiy programs, spyware/virus prevention software, updating every factor of the OS available, and even reloading all his music off of his iPod and reaccociating it with the iPod, he drops it trying to balance it in his hand a week later.

Well after getting quite aggravated at his lack of respect for what I just helped him with, for free mind you, I agreed to try fixing it again. After trying to reinstall Windows XP again with the 4-Disc Restore set it came with, an error now consistantly persists to appear.

On the fourth disc, when all data is copied to the hard drive and when its on the "Checks current Integrity" step (the step before the actual Windows Setup Wizard starts), it gives me a an error labeled:

Error #45
CRC error in data

I don't know what this means. This friend of mine moved to Pennsylvania and I'm not in a hurry to get it back to him (keeping it till he claims rights to it ), so I kinda want to get it working so I can give it to my brother to use (he suffers with a Windows ME system).

Thanks in advance.

Alright folks,
I'm working on my Mom's Compaq 98SE Laptop and want to add memory. I can't find specs on the mainboard anywhere, to determine what this board is capable of taking, before I try to order. When I run the CPU-Z utility on the system, it gives me the following... Mainboard manufacturer: Compaq, Model: 05D0h (TBD), Memory: 64 MBytes SDRAM (in one slot), Slots: 2, Processor: Intel Mobile Pentium II 433 MHz.
Does anyone have a website reference (or outright knowlegeable advice) that I can follow to locate the technical specs for this board? Any other particulars as well would be appreciated. I do know for a fact that Compaq systems are very persnickety about proprietary hardware and software even. Any hints would be welcome.

I have a 2009 compaq presario. Recently I turned it on and saw nothing but a white screen with some vertical streaks of different colors so I turned it off. A few hours later I turned it on again and saw the standard black and white screen with text saying that the computer was improperly shut down and asked if I wanted to start in safe mode. But my keyboard strokes had no effect, and the highlighted option did not change when I pressed the up and down arrows, nor did the screen change when I pressed enter. But I waited a few minutes and eventually got the login screen for windows vista, showing my icon and the guest icon. Again, nothing on the screen changed when I pressed enter or attempted to move the cursor with the mouse. Then a minute later the screen slowly started to fade to white, with the colored vertical streaks as described earlier. Soon the white and the streaks filled the whole screen. A few minutes later though the login screen suddenly appeared again, but it was still unresponsive and again slowly faded to white.

I believe that the operating system itself is probably in good order, and it is probably responding to all of my keystrokes, but that it's the video signal or the monitor that is failing. I would like to determine which it is. Do I have a faulty monitor, or is the problem with the video card? Or with something else?

Secondly, if it is a simple hardware problem, I have a 2nd laptop of the same model. How difficult would it be to swap out needed ... Read more

A:problem with monitor/video [compaq presario laptop]

If the 2nd laptop is exactly the same model you can put the hard drive from the problem laptop into the other laptop and, if there is no problem with that hard drive, it should boot into Windows.

See how that goes and let us know. What model Compaq laptop are they ?

This seems like a very interesting problem.
The laptop is a few years old, the problem seems to have gotten worse over the last few weeks, and i have an idea of what it may be related to.

first off, its a compaq presario c500, vista home premium, SP1, pretty basic. After years of use, one of the metal hinges for the screen broke in half, so as it sits, there is only one hinge. i thought it was okay, it just wouldnt hold the screen up at much of an angle, but it will if its pretty vertical.
i cant recall when the freezing issue first started, but its been a while. I noticed first when i would close it, and move rooms or something, then open it up, it would be frozen. only way to reset is hold the power button. ctrl-alt-del does nothing. I noticed one time that when i pushed buttons it made a beeping/error chime, but that was only once. just today i had music going, i closed the lid, left it playing, then the second i opened it, it started skipping. so it seems it froze when i opened it. then i went to push the power button, and i pushed the network/wifi button first on accident, which didnt turn the light off for it, BUT upon restart, it was off.
im wondering if its related to the hinge not being there, if it had caused some kind of stress somewhere that opening/closing creates on an interior component. i have done updates and such fairly recently, so it should be pretty well updated. the monitors driver is up to date.

thanks in advance!

A:Compaq Presario C500 Laptop freezes when re-opening the lid.

Hi rycdavis,What you describe could be caused by a lot of different things.First off, if you have your Vista OS up to date it should be SP2, would you double check that please? The next things that come to my mind are all more hardware related than Vista. As you suspect, the hinge may well be the culprit. Laptops have wires leading from the base to the display, and also usually have some sort of switches that are activated by opening and closing the lid. Why these things would cause system freezes puzzles me, though.Another thing common with laptops is dust build up inside the case. Try looking here at the Compaq website for tips on cleaning inside your c500. It appears there are several models of the c500, look at the information plate on the bottom of the computer, are there more letters following the 'C500' (e.g.CTO)? Click here to go to Compaq's Presario C500 CTO page. The last thing that comes to mind is the CMOS battery could be failing. These can cause all sorts of odd behaviors before they fail completely. Please let us know how what you find.

Hi all. I'm new here but not what you would call new to computers. I have a Compaq Presarion laptop sitting behind me that is giving me fits! A friend of mine got it as a gift. Its got a 1.5 ghz celeron processor, 256 mb of ram, and a 40 gig hard drive.

Here's the problem. When he got it, windows was corrupted and wouldn't boot to windows without a ton of error messages. He told me to wipe the drive clean and re-install XP. He handed me a fresh, recently purchased version of Win XP home and told me to do away with HP's proprietary version of XP. I figured, easy enough. I've done this kind of thing many times with many older computers.

Well, here's the problem. It won't let me do a full format from the XP CD during the first few pages of setup. I can do a quick format of the drive and continue on. However, during setup, I get errors. I've formatted and reinstalled the OS several different times, not always getting the same error message. I completed the install once (with errors) and when I got to the desktop, there was no start button or system clock .... or even the usual recycle bin icon. Nothing was there .... I could ctrl+alt+delete to reboot, but that was the only way to shut the system down.

What is different about these compaq presario notebooks. How can you do a low level format .... or a full format for that matter. How can you get it to take a regular microsoft version of windows XP? I've already wasted countless hours fighting with this laptop.

A:Problems installing Win XP on Compaq Presario 2500 Laptop

Bump ... there appears to be no pattern to the errors I'm experiencing. Can anyone help?

I own a Compaq Presario 1247 laptop (AMD K6II/400MHz, 2.2V, 160 MB RAM, 30GB HDD, 24x CDROM, model number 1456VQLIN, 3 or 4 years old I think...), and the darn thing won't power on. I gave it to my sis and it came back dead. She had taken it to compusa I believe, where the guy told her to replace the battery. When I plug it into the wall socket, the LED to indicate it's plugged in comes on, but the one that indicates the battery is charging doesn't. The battery has a light indicator to say how much charge is in it, and none of the leds come on (0% I guess). Pressing the power button has no effect, whether or not the battery is inserted into its bay. I'd bring it to compusa here, but they charge $140 just to look at the machine... since a battery costs less, I thought I'd try getting a new one first, but it seems strange to me that the computer won't boot when the battery is out of the bay. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Should I be looking for other causes? (fried motherboard, maybe, I dunno?) Thanks mucho for any help at all (or even sympathy )!

I have a Compaq Presario 1200 Notebook computer, but I didn't get the user's manual with it. There are 2 things that have me puzzled, and I'm sure anyone familiar with this series will be able to help.

First: the touchpad. After moving the cursor to a "target", tapping the touchpad performs an operation, like opening a folder, or executing a command. Right now, it responds to a very light tap, and I'd like to adjust it so that a stronger tap is required. How do I do that? (I'm running Win98SE, and can't find anything in Control Panel/Mouse that will do this.)

Second: Centered just under the touchpad buttons are a pair of light blue buttons, one with an arrow pointing up, the other with an arrow pointing down. What are these for? What do they do?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

O.K. When visiting my little sister this last Christmas, I attempted to upgrade her computer from 98 to XP proffesional, everything went smooth for a couple of days, till the computer contracted the Blaster worm, a few hours before I was suppsed to fly home, and all my work got scrapped. Since then, she has maxed the ram to 512 mb, and bought a new hard drive, western digital 120gb that she would like to use. As we are in different parts of the country, I am guiding her through all setup instructions over the phone...
We got the hard drive installed, and the new ram, and powered up the pc. It detected the ram, and moved to a screen that said operating system not detected. Here, I instructed her to insert the XP proffesional disk into the drive and reboot the computer. Then we get a screen that says the following, I am typing what she is telling me, not what I am looking at:

INF file TXT7 Setup.FIF is corrupt or missing
Status 40847
Setup cannot continue

I tried to boot using the XP boot disks 3.5 inch, but for some reason, her 3.5 inch drive is no longer recognized by the computer. We entered the bios, and it only references the cd-rom, and the hard drive in the boot sequence.

What can I do here? What has been done wrong? Any advice is appreciated since I pretty much killed my sisters computer this summer, when I attempted the upgrade and got the virus. Thanks in advance.

A:New hard drive, compaq presario 7470, can't install operating system?

If i understand this one right . the floppy disk is inside the computer but not recoqnized ? If that is the case, you'll need to recheck the connections (IDE and power ). It's very possible that you knocked one of them out in the process of installing the new HDD.
Now when it comes to the setup of windows XP , does the setup routine offers to "format " the hdd. It should since it's a brand new virgin hdd. At that point you need to let windows XP format the drive ( as in don't skip this step)
On the other hand if you haven't got that far into the setup routine, then you'll need to make the floppy drive functional first then use the WD floppy disk ( which should have came with the drive , if the drives was "retail bought") to check and see if there are any problems and also will help in setting up the XP

Hi! Okay, I'm not sure if this is in the right forum, since this is my first time posting. BUT ANYWAYSSS I'm a fourteen year old girl. Next week my mother will be getting her laptop back from Best Buy, and she is giving me the practically ancient Compaq Presario 1200 Laptop that she's been using for the past two weeks. It runs Windows XP Home Edition.

Now, this laptop is in fairly nice working condition. Rather slow, but that can be fixed once I clear everything out of it. My main concern is the heating: I believe something is wrong with either the heatsink or the fan. The laptop shuts down when put under stress that other computers could handle (for example, when I run a McAfee scan, it will shut down halfway through. When I try and load up my pictures through a USB cable connected to my camera, it shuts down). I can go online and on AIM and browse as I please without it shutting down, but the fan is so loud, and the computer tends to get hot. I also think that some of the slowness of the computer is due to this.

Now, I plan to open up the computer and take a look at the motherboard. I've never done this before, but I have nothing to lose except my own gain, so I'm not too worried. I haven't been able to find a good set of directions on HOW to open up the computer, but I feel like I could figure that part out by myself if I didn't get instructions.

Eventually, I want to replace the heatsink and fan, if I'm correct in thinking that t... Read more

A:Compaq Presario 1200 Laptop - Questions about overheating and heatsink/fan

That was one of the first results from google for Compaq Presario 1200 heatsink.
It looks like with that laptop the heatsink and fan can be seperated. But as you say, you won't be able to confirm that is the exact right part until you crack open the laptop.
The heatsink is a piece metal (usually copper) that touches the cpu and spreads the heat to a larger surface area. The fan moves air across the heatsink to help cool it off.

When changing a heatsink you need to use some thermal paste (a small amount) to fill in the gap between the heatsink and the cpu. There is plenty out on the internet about doing it.

Searching the google for 'presario 1200 instructions' turned up this link. 1200 Series.html
That should help you disassembly it. The laptop might simply need a cleaning from the years of dust that have been collected in it.
