Re-install Operating System on Compaq Presario

Q: Re-install Operating System on Compaq Presario

Please Note From my original thread:
Hello All, I am a newbie here and I would like to say thank you in advance to all you great people who provide such terrific support!

I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR1834NX Desktop PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Ver. 5.1.2715.3011 (xpsp(wmbla).061009-1511 Update Rollup 2.

I am suddenly missing items in the start menu, ie., accessories is missing entries such as under system tools it's blank and many other start up items. Also I am missing some control panel items. What I think has happened is the operating system has had some files erased or corrupted. There are just so many things missing that used to be listed makes me believe that is whats wrong.

How can I restore the original operating system or repair it without losing all of my current data and programs?

No cd's were shipped with my computer but there was directions for making a compaq cd/dvd recovery set
I made dvd recovery disks when the computer was new and I believe there are also recovery files on the secret partition, but I do not want to do a full restore with formatting the drive etc. I just want to repair the operating system if possible.
I tried doing several system restore points, but it does not replace what is missing.
Help Please

Welcome to TSF. I am thinking strongly that you have malware on your machine causing this problem, particularly if you cannot do a system restore. GO here and follow the instructions:

good luck

Please note: I can do a system restore but it does not restore the missing items.

I followed the 5 steps and the results are below:

O.K. When visiting my little sister this last Christmas, I attempted to upgrade her computer from 98 to XP proffesional, everything went smooth for a couple of days, till the computer contracted the Blaster worm, a few hours before I was suppsed to fly home, and all my work got scrapped. Since then, she has maxed the ram to 512 mb, and bought a new hard drive, western digital 120gb that she would like to use. As we are in different parts of the country, I am guiding her through all setup instructions over the phone...
We got the hard drive installed, and the new ram, and powered up the pc. It detected the ram, and moved to a screen that said operating system not detected. Here, I instructed her to insert the XP proffesional disk into the drive and reboot the computer. Then we get a screen that says the following, I am typing what she is telling me, not what I am looking at:

INF file TXT7 Setup.FIF is corrupt or missing
Status 40847
Setup cannot continue

I tried to boot using the XP boot disks 3.5 inch, but for some reason, her 3.5 inch drive is no longer recognized by the computer. We entered the bios, and it only references the cd-rom, and the hard drive in the boot sequence.

What can I do here? What has been done wrong? Any advice is appreciated since I pretty much killed my sisters computer this summer, when I attempted the upgrade and got the virus. Thanks in advance.

A:New hard drive, compaq presario 7470, can't install operating system?

If i understand this one right . the floppy disk is inside the computer but not recoqnized ? If that is the case, you'll need to recheck the connections (IDE and power ). It's very possible that you knocked one of them out in the process of installing the new HDD.
Now when it comes to the setup of windows XP , does the setup routine offers to "format " the hdd. It should since it's a brand new virgin hdd. At that point you need to let windows XP format the drive ( as in don't skip this step)
On the other hand if you haven't got that far into the setup routine, then you'll need to make the floppy drive functional first then use the WD floppy disk ( which should have came with the drive , if the drives was "retail bought") to check and see if there are any problems and also will help in setting up the XP

Okay, here is my problem. I have an hp presario desktop. Last night we had very high winds and the power kept on going on and off. When trying to use my desktop this morning a page comes up asking me how I would like to start my computer:
safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally, etc. I have tried each of them, let the computer try to reboot and my computer keeps restarting itself. It will get to the compaq screen and then restart. I does the same with safe mode, etc. I don't know what to do. I thought it might be overheating so I let it sit overnight turned off. This morning I tried to start it again and it keeps restarting itself.

Please help me! I don't know what else to do. I can't even get to the windows screen where all of my files are..I just want my computer to work again! Thanks in advance for your help and expertise!

A:My Compaq Presario keeps restarting over and over and over! XP operating system! HELP!

You may have a corrupted windows file(s), and that is preventing your system from booting up normally. The power issues could have damaged something within your computer such as the hard drive to the point where it only partially works. Are these files important, and do you have another computer you can put this drive in as slave and backup the data off of it, prior to performing a system restore?

Hey all, posting from my neighbor's PC... After experiencing a lot of lag and high comp % we began to diagnose the problem closer.. Ran scans using S&D, ad-aware, trend micro etc. in safe mode and malware was detected and removed but something still seems to be in control.... He tried running the Recovery Console which came with his computer but after every install still the problem remained.. His recovery console is the D: drive. I'm guessing whatever is in control of his computer also was able to infect the Recovery Drive...My question: Do I need to completely wipe his hard drive and do a complete clean re-install of the operating system to get rid of this bug? Or is there still hope?Symptoms: Problems first began when Windows Update failed to update and the windows Security Advisor had popped up and said he wasnt protected although everything was on and running.. At this point Trend Micro became unresponsive when trying to reopen. (I knew right away this was malware which began the scans in safe mode directly after) I'm not getting the Security Advisor issue any more but am experiencing a lot of random lag and high comp usage % doing real simple tasks. Also.. whenever I double click on say My Computer or any file for that matter the Windows Search box comes up... the only way to access folders on my desktop is by actually right clicking and selecting Open. I've ran multiple scans over and over and still cant seem to figure it out... Also.. when trying t... Read more

Greetings --

I am trying to upgrade a Compaq Presario V6000 laptop from 32-bit XP Pro SP3 to 64-bit Windows 8 Pro. This machine has an AMD Turion 64-bit CPU, ample RAM and HDD capacity. I am installing from the System Builder DVD.

Unfortunately the install is failing. After grinding away on the DVD for a very long time, finally I get the following message in a Windows 8-looking graphic:

"Recovery

"There was a problem with a device connected to your PC

"An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

"Error code: 0xc00000e9

"This problem can happen when a removable storage device is removed while it's in use or is failing. Properly connecting any removable storage and restarting your PC may fix this problem.

"Press Enter to try again

"Press F8 for Startup Settings"

There are no removable storage devices connected to the laptop. Neither of the 2 suggestions works, they just result in more grinding in the DVD drive and a return to the same error screen.

I just got through doing a successful install on a Presario V6700, which was also running 32-bit XP Pro SP3 previously. As far as I can tell the main difference between the two machines is that the good one has an Intel CPU and the problem one has an AMD Turion64 CPU. Both CPU's are 64-bit.

Letting XP complete boot-up and running the install DVD from Windows is not an option, since I'm trying to migrate from 32-bit to 64-bit and the OS won't allow it.

The BIOS allows booting from a USB ... Read more

I am trying to re-format my hard drive with my original HP XP Home SP2 cd. It loads the files and then it shows" windows is starting". Then it goes back to the boot automatically and starts the install again. I have tested the hd with a re-generator and checked the 1GB ram, motherboard. All shows good. my OE cd is sp2 that I am using...it is a 160g Western Digital pata drive. The bios is set to boot from cd first and hdd second. I also swapped out the optical drive to eliminate that possibility. I made a copy of the OS cd and tried that as well. Be advised that I checked the hd integrity with a hard disk re-generator program and it tested ok. I also used mem test 86 and ran it for 30 min with no errors. On this last try, I get this error: "error loading operating system" "press any key to reboot cd." but now it won't even boot my cd software. Now it finally is back to the reboot cycle again. Also, I did a Dariks boot and nuke to get a clean partition. I attached a usb drive adapter to the removed hd and plugged it into an old laptop. I d/l the WD h/d diagnostics file to my flash drive and ran the tests from there...the drive test was successful...I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi All,
Before I get started I did search the forums and couldn't find the answers I needed so now I'm posting.

OK, here's my deal....I have a Compaq Presario 5400 US with Celeron 1.2ghz, 512mb RAM, Onboard sound and video, Lite-ON CD-Burner, couple of hard drives, running Windows XP Pro.

I have an old machine that I used to play a lot of games on. Until now I have not played any games but my wife and I are getting back into Diablo II so I need to run a 3d graphics accellerator. I pulled my video cards from my old machine and had the following problems:

#1. ATI Rage Pro 8mb AGP: Installed to AGP slot and rebooted. Computer hangs at "COMPAQ" boot up screen and will go no further. Uninstalled Rage and disabled on-board video in hardware profiles and rebooted with same results. How the heck do I disable on-board video and get the AGP slot active?

#2. Diamond Monster 3D 2 12mb PCI. I installed it into the PCI slot and it was found by XP as a generic device but is no longer supported in the XP environment. No drivers available anywhere. I know I have to buy a new card but I don't want to drop some money on a new card and have my Compaq reject it like the older ATI card I have. I only want to play Diablo II as this machine is not powerful enough for any of the other cool games coming out(DOOM 3) so I need advice picking out a new 3d accelerator card. If it does 3d and 2d I'd be very happy but, and this is a big but, it needs to work in my C... Read more

Ok guys, im new here so i hope you can help me to figure this out.

I have been more than 3 days fighting with this an my options now are CERO. My problem:

Im formatting and reinstalling a fresh Windows XP on a Compaq Presario SR1923WM desktop, the first installation process that copies the files to the hard drive its fine, the problem starts when xp starts to install devices, it firstly was stopping at 35 minutes, i tried to find out the problem opening the setupapi.log, then i did erase the .inf causing the trouble and nothing. By the was i was using aXP version.

Then i tried with another disc, this time a Windows XP for HP machines, this times the minutes went down completely, the progress bar reached the 1% and then again showed me one gray screen and the system was hanging again.

Then, i figure out that the initial XP installed on the machine was the Windows XP Media Center Editio 2005, so i tried to install this with an OEM disc and then again it started to hang at 35 minutes.

I have tried other XP disc and nothing happens, i just can't get any OS installed on this PC.

Any help would be so much appreciated!

Sorry for my grammar im not native english speaker.

Johnny.

How many sticks of ram do you have? If 2, take one out and try, and if the install fails switch it with the other.

Make a Memtest86 disk and test your ram.

Do not have anything extra plugged in (USB ports etc) that you don't need to boot.

I have a Presario 2700 laptop that's no longer functional because the fan apparently has "detached" from the system board, causing the processor to overheat and shut down immediately upon reboot. This is according to the CompUSA technician. According to her, the screw grommets (holes?) have detached or broken, so the screws won't hold the fan in place. She says a new system board would be required, which costs $750. Obviously, this is not worthwhile, but it seems to me that there must be a cheaper way to hold that fan onto the system board (again, this is all assuming what she's telling me is correct...I have no way of knowing as I've never worked on a laptop). My question is: Is there any kind of epoxy resin or other heat-resistant adhesive that could hold that sucker in place enough to function? The CompUSA technician is willing to give it a try, but all she has is Krazy Glue which is no good with heat; I would have to get her the adhesive and she would attempt the hack. I'm willing to give it a try as the machine is now a boat anchor anyway. This is somewhat new territory for me so any guidance would be appreciated...thanks!

Roy

A:Compaq Presario system board hack...is this possible?

Do you have it open? If so, is there a heatsink under the fan, or does the fan just sit on the CPU itself? If there's a heatsink, then you can just glue it to that, if it's a fan on the CPU, then yea, some kind of adhesive would work well enough, but I would hope that there's a heatsink on it...

Guys,

Any help is welcome!!

I have purchased a new WD Hard Drive(60 GB) which I wanted to install on my Compaq preasrio (5BW160). This has a CD-ROM Drive and a CD-RW drive. On opening the machine, I found that the available bay beneath the Floppy drive does not accomodate the Hard Drive. And there is no existing place elsewhere to install this hard drive. Could somebody please help out by letting me know as to where this drive needs to be placed. Are there any other precautions which i need to consider?? While searching the Compaq website, found something vague about a railing which needs to be purchased(though I have no idea where from??).

Thanks in advance

A:How do I install second hard drive on Compaq Presario (5BW160)

Hi there Mohan
Try one of the local pc shops for the rails for mounting your new HD.....if they dont have any they might be able to give you some suggestions on how or where to get them.

I had a simular situation on a friends pc (hp with a mini tower) and I was able to use a stacking bracket from an old case that I had and it mounted horizontal just fine ...kinda depends on the room that u have in the case ....some even mount vertically.

just some ideas for you

good luck with it

No Windows 10 install method has worked on my Compaq Presario SR1913WM.My first attempt/preferred method was a clean Win10 32-bit install from ISO burnt to DVD-R (since the SR1913WM's USB ports are not recognized by any Win10 install method [hence I attach a PS/2 keyboard to install]):With "Custom" (aka clean) install I get the error"We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click Load driver"but when I then select a DVD-R folder full of all the "Vista" driver EXE files for the SR1913WM, (which I figured were a better choice than the only other option, XP drivers) I get the error message "No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, then click OK." (whether or not I check "Hide drivers that aren't compatible with this computer's hardware.").(Is there a way to get the actual driver INF file out of the EXE?  Running them didn't extract any files [whichI could find, anyway], and the old 'change the extension to ZIP' trick didn't work either.)With the "Keep personal files and apps" install, it told me to run setup from the inside 8.1, however that also results in an error message whether from the DVD-R or the Win10 Upgrade Microsoft's popup *offered* (I hear that's a good sign) in the OS, specifically either:1.  "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Hi,
I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!

A:Compaq Presario CQ40 laptop won't repair or run XP install

Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.

Compaq Presario 2210us laptop.
XP Home.

Computer came into shop wasn't keeping correct system time. I figured it was a dead BIOS battery. I took the laptop apart and replaced the battery. Should solve the problem right? Wrong. It keeps the correct time when it is on and booted into windows. If I turn off or restart the machine when it is on AC power it will keep the time thru a reboot or being turned off overnight. The problem is when I either reboot or turn the machine off without being plugged into AC power it looses the correct time. Most of the time it will have the time it was shut off or rebooted as the time.

I tried to repair the W32 time and also tried a third party sync software to sync with a time server. This works, but only if connected to the internet. I'm totally out of ideas and really need some help!

Thanks all!

Webcams in generally do not take up a lot of resources. plus they are also fairly chep. You can get one in your price range without a problem, it may just not have a microphone and oh cours the more you spend the more features youu get. Jut look around, check www.newegg.com or any place locally by you, or any other site you want to. Maybe stay with more brandname becuse i am not sure about other companes for webcams. And don't worry about your computer. I had a webcam on a desktop that brely meet the requirements for XP

Hi all

This is a very common question for which I couldn'g find a specific answer after searching the forum. Please excuse for a redundant question. I have necessary system recovery disk to perform destructive recovery of my PC. The main reason for the recovery is my suspicion that my PC is cluuterred with junk from my past years of PC use. I am having a C:\windows directory almost 3.8G which i feel is too high? Also the C:Windows\system32 files are approx 1 G. I have done disk defragment cleaned up using disk clean and cleaned my Temp folders. Now i have decided to do a system recovery to solve this issue. My question is should i remove my PCI cards that I installed for eg. IEEE 1394 firewire card and additional RAM and hard drivethat I added as regular upgrades to my machine. Will leaving this in my machine during recovery crash or cause undesirable effects to my computer. My other question is if a high disk usage to the ture of 3.8 in my C:\WINDOWs directory a normal for XP home edition. Many thanks for your kind review and response.

A:System Recovery Question for my compaq Presario S4000NX

Hello lak2000

I would remove any PCI cards which you added ( i.e they were not in the machine originally, so will not be involved in the Restore)
Reinstall them after the Restore

You can leave the hard drive, as long as it is not external.
Just make sure to restore to the correct Drive (check the drive letter)
You can leave the RAM

Disconnect all peripherals such as printer etc.

For XP Pro, my Windows directory is 3GB
My System32 folder is 1GB

I should add that I recently reinstalled XP, so these figures will be higher for a system which has been running longer.

hi,

im trying to help a friend with her labtop. I get some bizar problems that i dont understand.

Specs:

Compaq Presario 900
20Gb HDD
I think about 256 Ram
Athlon XP Processor.
Its 5 years old, and was functioning fine with win XP before, but after five years it started to get a bit slow, so we decided to reformat and put a new windows.

Point 1, often the ventilator doesn't work, and the computer overheats and then freezes. Are there any solutions to this?

So we set of. Ill describe the process. Take note of the ventilator. Mostly when it froze that was the cause, so i wont mention that every time.

We try to install WinXP SP2, a version dating from round december 2005. It stops on the blue screen copying files after formatting the disc. No activity except the hdd led flashing very slow.

Take 2: It stops on the 34 min mark of win install.
Reboot: we get past and windows installs.

When trying to boot, it hangs on the Logo screen. The progress bar stops briefly now and then, and then appearantly not activity.

Reboot: Choose start windows normally. Same problem
Reboot: Last known good configuration -> boots up smooth and reasonalbly fast.

This booting problem is consistent. I havent tried safe mode yet. But we only get past when choosing last good config.

The windows background landscape wallpaper appears and then we re stuck again. explorer never seems to get past the wallpaper.

Hello, all.

I am trying to install an ATI Rage 128 Pro 32MB PCI video card in my old Compaq Presario 7594 Desktop with onboard video running Win98. I have tried installing the card and the drivers and deleting the old drivers in just about every possible combination. Here's the problem - when the card is installed, I get no video on the monitor at all, even when the monitor is connected to the onboard video connector. The only setting in the BIOS that seems to have anything to do with video is under Advanced>PCI Devices>[Onboard] VGA. The default setting here seems to be "Disabled," but the only user-selectable settings are IRQ 3, 5, or 11.

The ATI driver installation program will not complete the install if the card is not in the slot, so I have installed the generic PCI Display Adapter driver, still with no luck.

I want to get this @!$% card installed so my son can play his sim games on this machine instead of my VAIO laptop.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jason

First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.
You can check your HP/compaq PC here:

NOTE: Please read this thread fully.

If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.
SATA Drivers - Load in Windows XP Setup on Dual Boot
OR
SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

A friend of mine brought me her Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC for help installing a new graphics card. What I found was that her computer was soo infected with viruses and spyware that some of the files needed to install the new drivers was corrupted and the hardware driver install failed. I ran an online virus scan from Trend Micro (Housecalls) and used Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE to clean up what I could. After all that, I ran another online scan using Panda Active Scan and the results of that scan showed that she still had spyware and a number of Trojans which Housecalls was not detecting. I recommend that she back up all critical files and run the HP recovery program which was located on it's own partition on her HDD. It seems that she must have encountered some sort of a problem with the recovery because Windows now reports that she has less than 100MB of HDD space available on an 80 gig HDD.

She really doesn't want to go through the process of running the recovery again. Is there a way of correcting this by other means? Before she ran the System Recovery, she had approximately 41 gigs free on the HDD. From what she is telling me, it sounds like Windows created a complete system backup that was not deleted once System Recovery was completed.

What do you think.

Keith

A:Low HDD space after running HP system recovery on Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC

I would run the recovery again, and pay special attention for option to format the drive before installing windows.

HP (I believe) calls it a destructive install - as it wipes the partition removing all data from it.

I am attempting to restore Windows XP Media Center Edition on a Compaq Presario SR1750NX Desktop PC using the System Restore option activated by pressing F10. Upon pressing F10, the system appears to load the PC Restore files but when it tries to execute them, it generates the following error:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of
0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Notes:

No CD's are available as the machine shipped with the System Restore feature on a protected partition.
I would prefer a "restore" solution, as opposed to other reinstall options, in order to maintain use of additional software (such as Windows Office) that came preinstalled on the machine.

Questions:

Any suggestions on how I might clear the issue generating the error message so I can proceed with the system restore?
Any suggestions on how I might otherwise approach the problem?

Thanks in advance as any and all assistance is much appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario generates Fatal System Error when attempting PC Restore

If you decide you need the 2-CD system recovery disc kit for that Compaq Presario SR1750NX (EL445AA) desktop, you can purchase it from Computer Surgeons HP Recovery Center for $27.00 plus shipping.

That desktop was manufactured in November 2005, so HP will no longer have it available for purchase.

The kit will allow it to be reverted back to its original factory condition - complete with all the software and "bloatware" that came in it.

If the hard drive dies and needs to be replaced, the kit is going to be needed anyway to get that desktop going again.

Got the infamous "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" on my mom's compaq presario desktop sr1900nx. It appears on a black screen after the red/white compaq screen. It takes about 30 seconds for the error to appear. There is a blinking underscore the line below it. I have done several hours of searching and have tried several things to get to at least to the system recovery area, but I can not even do that. When I cut power to it and try at least starting the boot process, I do get the COMPAQ red/white screen with 3 options on it. ESC to enter boot menu, F1 for setup, F10 for system recovery. The ESC & F1 work, but that's about it. I can not access the system recovery. It does NOT have a floppy drive, nor did the PC come with any recovery disks and of course I do not have any. I am just looking at this point to recover some pictures/documents from it...then as far as I am concerned it is trash. It was running windows XP. Is this even possible without spending a ton of cash on recovery cd's or for file recovery? I have also tried F8, Pause/Break and have hunted the setup/boot menu for anything that could help - and found nothing.

Thank you.

A:Compaq Presario Disk Boot Failure F10 system recovery not working

Hi Luchipboo, and welcome to BleepingComputer.

That Compaq has a recovery partition, this is why it didn't come with the discs. If you have the user's manual it should explain how to use it.

If you wish to backup the files that are on there first, you can alway install that hdd in another desktop as a slave drive. This will required setting the jumper on the rear of the drive in the slave position, and connect to the IDE data connector in the middle location. You should be able to access your files from there.

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 series running Windows 98. All was well until I tried to boot the computer yesterday and got the following error message:

"Operating system not found on any devices. Press any key to try again."

Pressing Del or any other key when it's trying to boot will only get me into the Compaq setup menu, not the BIOS setup. Everything looks fine in there, though.

I opened the tower up and the cables, fan, etc. seem to be fine.

My floppy and CD drives seem to be working, but when I try to use the Win 98 boot disk I get this message:

"Disk I/O error. Replace the disk and press any key."

I have some *really* important files that have not been backed up, so I *have* to get access to the HD ... once I've backed up these files, then I don't care what happens - I'll reformat if I have to. I have two hard drives on this system (and of course all my important stuff is on c drive) so I could swap them and try it, but I can't figure out how to get into Setup to re-designate them.

A:Compaq Presario SR1810NX Not Getting Past Compaq Logo Screen

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I'm trying to revive a Compaq Armada M700 laptop. When I boot the system, I get the standard red Compaq logo screen, then a screen which states:

Initializing Intel Boot Agent Version 2.6 (build 004)

followed by a screen which states:

Error loading operating system.

-----------Things I know about this laptop--------------------
I was able to install Ubuntu Linux Desktop upon it about a year ago, and it worked fine. Since then, however, my sister, the user of this laptop, decided she did not want Linux, but would rather have Windows XP installed. It was then given to a friend of her husband, who managed to eliminate Ubuntu. He stopped, there, though, probably having the same problems as I am now.

Having had previous problems with removing Ubuntu from laptop hard drives, I assumed I could perhaps install Ubuntu back onto computer. However, after inserting the CD and rebooting several times, it will clearly not happen.

A:Solved: Help reviving a Compaq Armada M700 - "Error loading operating system"

im going to guess and say that the boot order has to be set up to boot from a cd. when u put the windows xp cd in restart the computer and then start tapping F8 u should then see a black screen and in the left hand corner u should see press any key to boot from the cd. i always hit the enter key and u should be able to go from there.im assuming u have a windows xp cd.and im also going to assume u still have a valid coa sticker on the computer.i will make one suggestion u might want to get a bigger hard drive. 30 gb is a bare minumum anymore to have.if u dont have a windows xp disk u will either have to purchase one or u might be able to borrow the version of windows xp that u now have either home or pro. hope this helps u.

I also run the utility 'chkdsk, no errors

And also, I did the memory test ram with MemTest86 without errors.

A:Cannot install operating system

Have you tried wiping the drive to 0's? Then reformatting it. There is some software you can down load to do this. Such as Kill Disk. The drive may have some corrupt files on it more or less that did not get wipe off If you have formatted. Western Digital software use to have a program that would write 0's to drive. But not sure if they do now. This could be worth a try.

Hi
Don't really know much of what I can say but...

My computer is right now, Windows XP. I am trying to install another operating system onto my computer. I'm not very connected to what I'm doing, I just know what steps to take with this CD.
I wouldn't know what part of this it would be called but I have a picture of what it does.

"cant read the following volume /mnt/restore.000 enter another full path"

I've used this CD before, but this would be the first time it's done this.
Is this fixable and how can I?

Hi and Welcome,
It would help to know what new operating system are you tying to install? Where did that disc come from?
What are the machine specs? i.e is it up to running a new o/s?

Thanks.

There have been a noticeable number of users that want to change their OS from Windows 8 and come to the community to ask questions about this process. Thanks for posting this Acer-Cory. When I first bought my Aspire XC-605 a few months ago, I was considering "downgrading" to Windows 7. However, after a few weeks of use and the upgrade to Windows 8.1, I decided that the operating system was just fine, and performance was even better than Windows 7 which I have on my office computer. All my old software works fine on Windows 8.1 including "ancients" such as Paintshop Pro X and AutoCAD 2005.

Hi Guys, Hope i have posted this in right place as im not sure if my problem is a hardware problem or software. Here Goes
I bought a second hand laptop Its a Compaq Armada with 1ghz processor 192mb ram (soon to be upgraded to 576mb) This machine came with a floppy drive only i have now bought a dvdrom for it that interchanges with floppy drive. It appears to have originally had windows 2000 on it and i would like to put xp home on it. When i turn it on this is what i get "Initializing Intel Boot Agent Version 2.6 (build004)" Then it goes to a message saying "Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready" I have downloaded 6 boot disks from microsoft and i have a new copy of xp home. I put in the first boot disk and all seemed to be going well. It prompted for the disks and one by one i started to feed them in but when i get to the forth disk i get a message " File vga.sys is corrupt" and it aborts the whole operation. Im stuck i dont know whats gone wrong, in fact i dont know very much about computers at all so any help would be very much appreciated. Many Thanks in Advance.

A:install Operating system

You shouldn't need any boot disks at all. Put in the XP CD and that is bootable into the setup. You probably need to go into the BIOS and change it so that it tries to boot from CD first.

A:Install XP Operating System

You might try contacting Dell. You will need the model number, Serial Number and Service tag number (should be on tower, under the front USB cover). It is possible they will send you (may be small fee but they will tell you how much) recovery disks for that particular unit.
Other than that, I think you will need to buy a retail copy of XP.
Several years ago, we purchased a refurbished Dell and was able to get the disks from them (they overnight shipped them to us at N/C.
Good luck

A:how to install two operating system

You can have both installed as a "dual boot" system but they can't share applications as they both run separately and independent of each other. Each time you boot up, the boot loader will ask you to choose which one you want to use for that session.

You'll need to install each third-party application in Windows XP, then install it again in Windows 7 just like you would if you had two computers. Bear in mind you'll also need to make sure that the application in question is compatible with the version of Windows you're installing it on (some older third-party apps won't run on Windows 7 so for those you'll have to use XP instead).

You also need to check that your PC is actually capable of running Windows 7 & that you can obtain all the Windows 7 drivers it needs in case the Windows 7 DVD doesn't contain some of them. For a system compatibility check go here:

Hello,

I have a dell latitude CPI laptop. Has windows 98. I would like to have a new operating system XP (like what I have on my PC at home)

I tried to do a clean install on the latptop with format c: s/ (to save the system files) and to wipe the harddrive clean. I then installed MS XP Home edition. When it boots up, it shows I have the two operating systems on the harddrive. Maybe that isn't a problem, but I would think it would take up harddrive space.

I would like to start over!! and wipe the harddrive clean and reinstall the XP operating system. Any ideas?

It seems like the install of the XP operating system is alot EASIER than window 95 and 98 were. It's been along time since I've done this kind of thing!! I didn't need the floppy drive. worked all from the CD!!
Thanks!
bt

PS: After installing, I discovered how MS now requires you to register the operating system. I had installed XP from the cds I have from my PC.

Today I purchased an OEM XP Operating system on-line $48.00. They claim it will be a new unregistered system, just without the paperwork, etc. I am thinking I will keep use the cd's from my pc as I know that works and just register the numbers I get from the version I just paid for. Will that work? I keep seeing SP2 in the forum. Is that a fix for XP? Could I be getting an older version of XP????
I am so thankful I found this site!

You can install the hard drive, and then when installing Win7 it'll automatically create the boot entries for you.

But, FWIW, I don't think that you'll get anything extra out of the 64 bit version unless you add more RAM also.

Not sure if this is the problem but i will continue, when i try to load windows server 2008 r2 i can partition the drives but when i select the partition to install on i get this error.'

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The computers hardware may not support booting to this disk, ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers bios menu.

I just put together a new system and cannot install any operating system onto it. I've tried Windows 7 x64 and x32 as well as Ubuntu 11.04 x64. They all stall out the same way (pictured below). For Windows, it stalls out just after resizing the screen to fit the optimum monitor resolution. For Ubuntu, it stalls out on the first dot after going through the dots under the logo twice. I'm trying to install the operating system from a flash drive in both cases. As this occurs with both OSes, I'm of the opinion that there's something wrong with the hardware, but what? (I'm currently on an Asus Eee, so burning a disk would be difficult at best) I've tried resetting CMOS and taking everything apart and putting it back together again and googling the problem, leaving the system on for 15 minutes in that state.

System configuration:
Motherboard: GA-M68MT-S2P rev 3.0 with onboard graphics (NVidia GeForce 7025/NVidia NForce 630a)
Processor: AMD Phenom II x6 1090T black box
RAM: Kinsington KVR1333D3N9/2G x2
Harddrive: Seagate 1TB LP Serial ATA HD 5900/32MB/SATA-3G

The only difference between Windows and Ubuntu is the color of the screen. Below is Ubuntu. Windows is blue when it does this, but otherwise looks the same.
Edit: Ah, I cannot post a picture. It is diagonal lines that go from the lower right corner to the upper left. They are composed of short lines with white and black pixels on either with some white lines intermixed.

System : eMachines G640
Disk Drive : WD3200BEVT

Original disk drive failed with read errors so was replaced with above (like for like).

Installing from USB stick - no problems during the install.

After first reboot, system displays Operating System Not found unless the USB stick is present,
and the let it go through press any key to install from USB WITHOUT pressing any key.

Performed multiple installs, BIOS boot list is correct Hard Drive is top of boot list, BIOS set to AHCI Mode.

I have read multiple forums and tried the following to no avail:
Re-formatted drive from another computer (USB to SATA Cable) via windows 7 O/S
diskpart clear all
diskpart to set up partitions
Formatted during the install process
Manual bootrec /rebuildbcd, bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot
Fix via Visual BCD Editor
Fix via install USB advanced repair options

Been at this for a few days now and probably can't see the wood for the trees.

I have had a hard time this week with my computer and have reached my wits end.

Firstly, my computer was just restarting @ the windows boot screen.

I replaced the PSU , same issue (300w --> 450w) still restarts during the windows boot screen.

I then reapplied thermal paste to the cpu and hsf , hoping it may have been a overheating problem, still restarting @ boot screen

Got out my spare (brand new) motherboard , hooked it all up.... now it gets further, ive started a new fresh install of windows and at first it would freeze around 52% on copying files. After a few restarts it managed to get to the actual installation now it bombs out on 36mins remaining.

I have also tried : Ubuntu install disk, and Ubuntu Live disc, both freeze.
any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have created new partition ''New Volume :" to install windows server 2008 on it
,but when I try to boot from the CD to install it
this message appear

"
Windows cannot be installed to this Hard disk space . The partition contain one or more volumes that are not supported for installation "
this screenshot of my disk management

I hope some one help me ...

A:Can't install another operating system on the partition

Windows cannot be installed to this Hard disk space . The partition contain one or more volumes that are not supported for installation "

From the snapshot you posted, it is clear that your hard drive is a "Dynamic" one. Windows Vista , 7 and Server 2008 won't support installing to "Dynamic" disk.

You cannot select or format a hard disk partition when you try to install Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

This problem may occur for one of the following reasons:
Windows is incompatible with a mass storage controller or a mass storage driver.A mass storage controller or a mass storage driver is outdated. The hard disk on which you want to install Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 is a dynamic disk.A data cable in the computer is loose, or another hardware issue has occurred. The hard disk or the Windows file system is damaged. You tried to select a FAT32 partition or another type of partition that is incompatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Unfortunately, there is no safe way to convert a dynamic disk with more than four partitions to "Basic Disk". The process is too risky and may cause data loss.

Good morning,

I'm windows seven home premium 64 bit install and i desire windows xp in virtual install. I have 3 gb of RAM. How many RAM owe have for operating system in virtual install.

Thank you for your answer.

A:operating system in virtual install

XP will default to 512MB. To use more, you will have to manually configure it. How much you use, will depend on how much is free/available when Win7 is running.

I have an old dell optiplex 466le with a 1.5 gig hard drive and a 486dx2 processor. It does not have an operating system and I need to install an internal cdrom so I can install windows 98 (if the drive is big enough to handle it.) It has 32 mb ram. I am pretty new at working on computers and I want to use this system for my computer class.(don't want to mess up my good one) I have a windows 98 boot disk to get it going but I am not sure which steps I need to take. Do I need to format the drive first, or do I need to hook up the cdrom and let the operating system find it? I really want to learn to do this myself so if there is too much to my question, could you lead me to a web site where I can learn? I already know how to hook up the cdrom but I have never formatted a hard drive. I think the boot disk will automatically see the cd rom when I boot as I have tried it and it say's it can't find the cdrom. What do I do first? (second & third)Also, is windows 98se too much for this system & would it be better to install windows 95?

A:install cdrom w/no operating system

Hi

I am new to this forum so sorry if I post anything dodgy. I will also try to be as clear as I can

I have recently come into the possession of a Dell Dimension 3000 as it is a friends who is wanting some help.

When I received the desktop I found that they had been using Wintenals ERD 2005 as there OS. I therefore started by trying to install windows xp on the HDD. When I did so the initial setup went fine until it asks me to partition my HDD as the format is not accepted for windows xp. However when I put in an amount to partition the hard drive the screen just reverts back to the screen showing the unpartitioned space. This is the same for any number that I enter.
I then decided to try ubuntu seeing as it is free and is relatively easy to install. however when I tried this it comes up with an error saying that it is unable to create the ext4 partition #1 or something (sorry I will try and get the exact statement)

I am not sure if the issue is me being stupid or if the hard drive is dead or something weird but if any of you lovely people could help then I would greatly appreciate it

How to install operating system on brand new computer?

Just wondering exactly how its done so i dont mess it up because its the first time Ive ever done it...Im not to worried about installing XP home however the new computer came with 2 other disks which im not sure what they are for.

One disk is for the optical drive I think...it says LG DVD writer Solution...written on CD says

Power DVD
power Producer
Nero express
In CD
Acrobat Reader
Drive Manual

I assume I need to install some type of driver for it however should I do this before installing windows?

I also have another CD that came with new computer which says.

P5VD2-VMSE
Graphics Integrated motherboard
VIA P4M900 Series Support CD Rev.292.02
M2023
ASUS
Vista Drivers Inside

I see thats this is for the motherboard however not sure what its for exactly and since Im installing XP and not vista I wasnt sure what to do...perhaps the CD is saying it also supports vista as well?...this computer allows you to install windows 2000,XP or Vista.

If i have to insert this CD for motherboard I was wondering when it should be done...before operating system or after...thanks for any help.

A:How To Install Operating System On Brand New Computer?

Make sure the computer is set to boot to the cd drive in bios, load the xp cd(w/sp2 of course)

the cd will load and look for your hard drive, test this!

then you have it prepare the drive(create a partition and format) choose slow format

it will install the OS

after that's done go into device manager and note which hardware devices did not get detected and drivers loaded

those are the ones you will need from the cd

check dates on ones from the web vs dates from the cd

be careful and don't load an old driver that was written for an earlier version of xp

this is really something you should watch a more experienced person first

there's a real art to getting a good load of windows and drivers, I might have to do it 2 or 3 times myself on especially difficult new boards before I am satisfied with the results

And I have done it countless times over many years

And I haven't even mentioned the worst part, setting bios up to get a good load and running machine

Hi There I bought a new HP Pavilion 550-055na with Windows 8 a month or so ago but wish to use Windows 7. However, I have decided I will keep the Hard Drive the PC came with and have the option of Windows 8 sometime in future if I wish. Therefore, I'm installing Window's 7 on a new Hard Drive. My problem is that the fresh copy of Windows 7 won't install on my new Hard Drive.  I keep getting: Secure Boot ViolationInvalid Signature Detected. Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup It then takes me to a black screen after I press Enter/Ok which says the following. Check Media Presence.......Media Present.......Start PXE over IPv4. If I press F12 on powering up, I get a blue box asking me to select a boot device. The only options are: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller IPv4Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller IPv6and Exit using the arrow keys How do change the secure boot policy?  If I do so, does this then mean that I can install my Windoes 7 on my new Hard Drive? Also, providing I do, will I still be able to use my Windows 8 OS Drive after changing the secure boot policy? Any help would be greately appreciated. Kindest Regards DJ

Hi everybody...I have a Dell Inspiron15r model N5010 that I was trying to upgrade to windows 8 Pro when I went and downloaded many of the drivers from Dell so that I had all the latest and greatest. in my quest for quickness, I accidentally installed a driver for a HD that was listed when I meant to install the newest drivers for the accelerated HD graphics card. as soon as I did, the computer restarted and the infamous "missing operating system" message appeared. I checked the BIOS to see if the HD was still listed, and it is. I took the laptop all the way down to bones and removed CMOS to see if this would reset all drivers to loaded defaults, and this didn't work either. Please help.

A:Missing Operating System after bad HDD driver install

This is not XP. Win7 is the first driver-complete OS in the installer, quickly updated via optional Windows Update after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware.

Only after all Updates are done should you import any drivers still missing in Device Manager from Support Downloads webpage for your tag number.

What I would do is follow these steps to assure a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 paying close attention to how drivers are handled, and the tools and methods which work best for Win7.

If you want to try to undo what you've already done, then boot installer into Repair console on second screen and run Startup Repair. If it doesn't offer it, run System Restore from the System Recovery Options list.

I just bought a refurbished Dell desktop PC that came with Windows XP Home preloaded. I have bought the disc from Microsoft for Windows 7 OS and want to do a clean install on that PC.

When I put in the Windows 7 disc and restart the PC, the cursor will appear for about a minute flashing in the upper left hand corner of the black screen before the machine finally boots to Windows XP Home edition.

Things I?ve tried:

1. Reboot and hit F2 to check the reboot order which is already set to do ?Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive? as the first choice.
2. Reboot and hit F12 to see if there are any other options that make sense (which don?t to me).
3. Reboot in Safe Mode (and then what do I do?)

Here?s my PC?s configuration:

Dell GX280 Desktop
Pentium 4 2.80 GHz
750 Gb Hard Drive
2 Gb RAM

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

We just built a computer and have 2 hard drives. One is a 3.5" Western Digital Caviar Black - 500GB 7200RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s and the second is a 2.5" Seagate Momentus - 60Gb 5400RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s. What we are wondering is if we can install the windows 7 operating system on the 60gb drive, but have the some of the system files on the other drive like the program files and maybe even the documents and settings files. Is this possible?

Lily, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  I suggest that you run the SMART test from the BIOS to make certain.  Your only option is to replace it if it has failed. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

A:how to install an operating system on my hard disk

The message that you are receiving means that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to buy a new one.  You should buy one the same size or larger than the one being replaced to assure that the Recovery media works with it. For future reference, when requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.
