# Help! My Windows are dying and I dont even know why!

Q: Help! My Windows are dying and I dont even know why!

Hello!

I have a problem but how to say? I don?t know what it is at all. My operating system is Windows XP Service Pack 2 Home edition and I have already completed the 5 steps before posting a Log and there are not many changes.

The symptoms:
- First time in the middle November my laptop started to act in a weird way: when I have caps lock on it will type small letters and the opposite, when I want to open a new tab in explorer it will open me a new window, when I want to use the right click options of my mouse I will have to click the left side, when I want to select one folder it will select all the folders present in the already opened one. Therefore I tried to update and run a check with my antivirus (NOD32) and Spyboot S&D but I couldn?t update them and not even run a proper check. Therefore I thought of restarting my computer and performing the check while starting up and everything turned back to normal apart the sound: the sound will not play when windows starts up or shuts down, warning messages appear or when I plug in my USB but music and movies will play normally in winamp, windows media player and similar programs. After restarting my laptop I also could update my antivirus and Spyboot S&D and run a normal check but nothing was found at the time.
- A few days ago while working on something my laptop suddenly restarted and when it came back into windows it showed me a warning saying ?the system has just recovered from a serious problem report to bla bla bla?.?. Here is where my antivirus and Spyboot stopped working. Therefore I uninstall NOD32 and try to install another antivirus program but I could not install any (at this point NOD32 was already successfully uninstalled). When I tired to install AVG it says this:?Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgamsvr.exe: starting service....
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. (1053)?
I also tried to install HijackThis but it says ?C:\Documents and Settings\Nina Jovicic\Desktop\HijackThis.exe is not a valid Win32 application.? The same warning will appear when I try to run Spyboot S&D. But while performing the 5 steps I have no problems in installing Spywere blaster and other required programs.
- In addition, my laptop performance slowed down a lot (movies are playing extremely slow while the sound is playing normally, internet explorer will open new tabs and widows really slow too and everything else).
- I also remember my antivirus found a Trojan horse once in the mean time but I am sorry I can remember the name anymore.

I hope I attached correctly all the required information. If not please tell me and I'll do it again. I am desperate to solve this therefore if you need any info I can provide just tell me and I'll reply immediately. Thank you in advance!

A: Help! My Windows are dying and I dont even know why!

So, basically my 64bit Windows 7 PC is starting to die.

It all began with BSOD's related to Kernal_Data_Inpage_Error, referencing ntfs.sys.
That only happened when I overloaded it so I figured it was due to overheating or something.

Then I installed an application called Secunia PSI to try iron out the kinks.
Then this morning I discover that it took the liberty of running windows updates and I was stuck with a new BSOD called process1_initialization_failed. After reading up on some forums that it could be linked to a file called bootcat.cache and deleting it was the best option. I booted into linux and deleted that file and I managed to get into Windows but when I turned my back discovered that the PC had restarted itself so obviously a BSOD had returned.

I don't know what to do or where to turn.

any ideas what might be causing it?
I've attached the Window Minidump file from the most recent BSOD.

Use Crystal Disk Info to upload a screenshot of your Hard Drives (s).Then test your Hard Drives (s) running a Hard Drive Diag.
System File CheckerThe SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible. If you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc /scannow will revert the system files to it's default state.Link to full tutorial: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You also have a Linux distro installed, and it does not have problems? If so, that points to a corrupted Windows rather than a dying PC. I'd install Windows fresh if it were my machine.

Hi,

I've been using this Sony Vaio laptop for about 5 years, and while its battery holds almost no charge now (it will shutdown within 5 minutes if I leave the power cable unplugged) it has always worked fine when on power. Until now. Suddenly whenever I try to open Firefox the computer freezes irreversibly, and the disease has gotten worse and it is freezing in random times as well when I click something or leave the computer idling. I have posted relevant info in the Mozilla support as well:

I was using Firefox just fine as I have been for years, and when I tried to open it today after restarting the machine, it froze the computer almost completely (mouse works, but clicking it anywhere does nothing and ctrl + alt + del does not work). Sometimes even the mouse ceases to work. The only way to react to this is to shut down the system by cutting the energy (On/Off button) as I have waited up to 5 minutes and the system does not recover.
I have tried opening the Safe Mode dialog box (start -> run -> firefox -safe-mode) and choosing the options to disable extensions and toolbars and "reset user preferences to FF defaults" and click "apply and restart" and the computer freezes. If I hit the "continue with Safe Mode" button instead, I get to see the FF screen with a blank tab on it but the computer freezes as well.
I am completely baffled by this sudden problem. I am having to type this from Google Chrome and thus I cannot supply trouble... Read more

You may want to try running a memory test to see if that could be what's causing the issue. If it also happens in safe mode it's probably not a driver issue. When you ran check disk did you do a full surface scan for bad sectors?

I am wondering if there is some software available to transfer all of my current by dying system to my new system.  I tried PC mover and it only transferred about 20% of my information and left enormous amounts of data and programs behind of which almost all were free type software.

Would appreciate any assistance

My HP e7790Y had a Vista SATA hard drive that was alive but dying.

I installed a second SATA drive, went in through Vista to load Windows 7 onto the new hard drive, and transferred all of the files over to the Windows 7 drive.

When I started the computer it automatically went to Windows 7, which is where I wanted to be, so I was happy for a while until the original Vista drive started to die intermittently.

When the Vista drive quits working I get the screen to access the BIOS, after which it freezes on the black screen with the flashing cursor. The same thing occurs if I try removing the Vista drive and booting off of the Windows 7 drive. The Windows 7 drive and the DVD drive don't appear to be accessible unless the Vista drive is working.

I am always able to access the BIOS if needed.

I believe that I have a few minutes of life left in the Vista drive, so I could use that time to either access the Vista drive and/or the Windows 7 drive if there is something that I can do to fix the problem. I'd like to permanently remove the Vista drive and replace it with the Windows 7 drive.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks, Bob

A:Dying Vista HDD to new Windows 7 HDD

Hi Bob Welcome to the Forums if noone has said it already. Your Problem here is that your MBR is stored on the Vista Drive. Unplug the Vista drive and plug the Win 7 drive into SATA port 0 (or 1 depending on how its numbered) and load your Win 7 DVD, click Repair My Computer and then Startup Repair let it do its thing. it should detect the error. do this 3 times. that should sort it

I made a new user account today because my administrator account couldn't get into the registry, it said "Registry access has been disabled by Administrator". So I created another admin acount and, when suddenly I got attacked by a bunch of trojans. I think the trojans were triggered by the creation of the other account, and now explorer keeps stopping, leaving just my background (the desktop icons and taskbar are gone). Then I also get an error report message saying that spools.exe has closed. When I shut down or restart through task manager, I get a blue screen stop error. System restore won't work through safe mode, the only option is to go to a restore point from a few minutes ago, which is called "last known good configuration", but it doesn't do anything. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this mess?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop with Windows 7 - 64 Bit.

A few weeks ago control panel started crashing windows explorer when I first open it. Once it reopens explorer the control panel works fine second time around. I have tried searching for *.cpl files in the windows system 32 directory but none of them seem to be corrupt.

Yesterday Windows Movie Maker 2.6 was struggling very very badly to work. It was freezing and going hopelessly slow.

CPU Usage is very eratic - around 15% to 50% when I have nothing open.

I did a repair install windows from my disc yesterday following these instructions
Repair Install

Now things are even worse. I get blue screen crashes every hour or so, the control panel still crashes explorer and windows movie maker (and everything else) are too slow to use.

PLEASE - there must be a fix to this - it was a very good computer a few weeks ago.

If I do a system restore to a few months ago will I have to reinstall all the software I have put on in the past few months?

I have my memory usage attached. 64 processes with all users. Loads of svchost.exe and probably some other unnecceassry processes - how do I stop them from running in the background if not needed. How do I know which are and aren't needed. I'm using 47% physical memory at the moment.

Thanks

First go to msconfig>Startup and uncheck everything except AV and gadgets/stickies if you use them.

Next install free lightweight MS Security Essentials which acts invisibly with the Win7 firewall.

If this is a factory install, turn off factory utilities like wireless manager and use the better built-in's in Win7.

Next burn to CD memtest86 to run 5-6 passes on memory. Or stress test it overnight.

Next burn to CD the HD maker's diag/repair scan, boot to run a full scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp. Follow that up with Disk Check

Google repeat errors in Event Viewer>Admin View to find how others have solved them. Same with Performance log on the Advanced Tools page accessed by clicking WEI score link at Computer>Properties. Look for cued issues at top of Tools page, Generate a System Health Report.

Type "prob" into Start Search box to Check for Problem resolutions, which may also be cued in SysTray.

Computer only runs successfully in Safe Mode (networking optional) Windows Explorer "has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close" pops up every single time I start my computer. Run DLL as an App error message comes up almost every time I try to run a program. I can ONLY access my computer though Task Manager and MS DOS. Windows tells me that it cannot find rundll32.exe and basesrv.dll - Tried to resolve rundll32.exe by putting windows xp Pro in and installing it on existing partition and not changing user settings and files. When it was 53% installed it said "cannot copy basesrv.dll" could not complete install - When I skipped file to continue install, it rebooted and could not run b/c basesrv.dll was missing. Help! My whole business is on this dumb computer and I don't know if I can get ahold of a 5GB flash drive right now so I can get rid of this crazy thing!

When in task manager - Go File > New > Type in sfc /scannow. Should hopefully replace those missing files. It may ask for your XP CD - just insert it and let it do it's business.

A:[SOLVED] Windows Explorer Keeps Dying

My antivirus had been disabled and everything, but I re-enabled it through task manager and got rid of the trojans. Also through task manager, I installed xplorer2 lite (a third party version of windows explorer) as a temporary fix for my computer. Now that (I hope) the viruses are gone, all I really need to deal with is the aftermath. explorer.exe still just stops and all the screen shows is my background for a bit, then explorer comes back, and goes through the same cycle. I'm getting a message that spools.exe isn't responding, maybe that has something to do with it? the Virus disabled the startup of my antivirus so I have to do that manually, and I can't install new antivirus, it says "the installation of this program has been blocked by your administrator". All my internet connections have been erased (Local area connection, 1394, bluetooth, wireless, everything). System restore acts funny, I think the viruses deleted all my restore points. It's pretty messy, so i think I'm just going to back everything up onto an external hard drive using xplorer2 lite and then reformat. If anyone has a fix for any of these things or any other solutions, just let me know.

Help please. Total computer neophyte having terrible luck keeping these silly machines running. Burned through two reasonably high-end HP desktops in the last five years, both with hard-drive crashes. Now on my 3rd HP desktop (maybe I should give up on them),
running Win 8.1 (not Pro). Tremendous networking problems in the first months of owning the machine, but may have been my wi-fi in Singapore, not sure. Worked fairly well once I connected through Ethernet.
So I get the Windows 10 icon in my taskbar maybe six months ago.  Heard it was better so signed up for it.  Wasn't able to download it until a month or so ago, tried to download but it crashed somewhere along the way.  Don't think it ever
downloaded fully or activated, but I really don't know how to tell.  Now a day or two ago, I couldn't run Windows Update, it would freeze up with the little circle going around for hours.  Then Windows Live Mail wouldn't open - click the icon on
the taskbar, nothing.  Fortunately the browser still works, so here I am.  Norton also appears to be working.  Tried the Update Troubleshooter (and every other one), they just hang up as well.  Looked online and tried some of the suggested
Command Prompt stuff, but I have no idea what I'm doing in DOS and don't want to kill the machine entirely.

So, I have a few issues that have all popped up over the past few days.
I have a sony vaio with windows 7.
the first is that when ever I bootup, it does a check of the hard drive and says there are issues, I've attatched the photo of what it actually says.
I have tried to do the system restore as it says, but it won't allow me to. There was an error in the C: drive and couldn't complete the process.

I haven't install anything other than the windows updates and vaio updates.

Secondly, I not longer have a hibernate option, not at all. I have done the trouble shooting for missing hibernate button as an option in the shutdown menu thing, but hibernate doesn't show up on any of the options suggested. When I type in the
power/hibernate on in the cmd (or what ever it was) it tells me I don't have access to turn on the hibernate function.
I am the only person on the computer and have administrative privileges.

I have checked for viruses and nothing was found, so I don't know if this is a virus or what, but I am so lost.
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
I may just end up restoring it to factory settings.
Thank you

Update: I have managed to fix the hibernate issue. Random person as school had had the same issue

Not sure if this is the right part of the forum for this, as i dont know whether its XP, hardware or what?! Very random problem guys, desperately need help!

About a fortnight ago, my comp began to freeze at completely random times, sometimes whilst totally idle. This is a total freeze even the clock stops, no BSOD or restart. the only thing that guarantees a freeze is burning something. otherwise, its totally random.

I did the usual virus and spyware etc checks using NOD32, a-squared, avg, f-secure, f-prot, ad-aware, mcafee, kaspersky, AVG, symantec corp, spybot. (not all at once for anti-virus, tried one, uninstalled, tried another etc) Not a thing found. The restarts got more frequent, until it freezes when i try to start the comp. So i thought hardware... i used Hiren 9.1 and UBCD, and ran every diagnostic thing on there, the memory ones for at least 6 hours each. Not a thing.

I rewrote the MBR, no help. I decided id do a clean install, so i went to back up my data by putting the HD in my parents comp to copy across the important info. However when i loaded it up, their's crashed! Now the same problem affects theirs too, i feel well guilty, but still to this second, no virus or error etc is found!

any ideas?? thanks in advance for any help

Hi, guys. I bought an Acer Aspire 5741Z-5539, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, back in August. Towards the end of September, it basically ate itself from the inside out. First, I had to run Startup Repair every couple days. It went really slow and took about an hour and a half to complete the whole process each time. After about a week, Windows itself got a little wonky. With Windows Explorer freezing more and more often, and then Firefox beginning to have problems. I booted up in Safe Mode and that worked for a little bit before the Start menu froze again anyways. A couple days later I tried to start it up again to transfer my files off of it, and it ran Startup Repair once again, but this time it couldn't repair it.

So, my dad has a little device used to hook laptop HDDs up to another computer as an external. But it wouldn't come up on the other computers. I got a friend of mine who's pretty good with this type of thing to help out. He tried to access the drive through Ubuntu and still couldn't get at it. Eventually, we got the files off by hooking it up directly to his desktop somehow and got the files off, and I did a clean install of Windows Ultimate 32-bit (the 32-bit downgrade was on purpose).

This was a few weeks ago. It was running fine since then. Then around a week ago, the computer stopped recognizing how charged the battery was. It wouldn't charge past 89%, and it wouldn't deplete past 6% (even after setting the minimum to 3%... Read more

My 8-month-old Win 7 PC had been running without problems until I started using Sleep and Hibernate modes. After waking it from hibernate I started to get a regular Windows warning about a hard disk problem, ie ?Windows detected a hard disk problem? etc. Did a backup of course and ran Check Disk which reported no problems on the Samsung HD502HJ 500GB drive.
Rebooted and stopped using sleep or hibernate, no problem. Went to hibernate and shortly after waking the problem returned. Rebooted and no problem has appeared.

It sounds very strange but can hibernating the PC make Windows think the HD is dying?

Greetings, ok, I'm kind of at a crossroads here and want to make sure I make the right step forward. Here's my situation:

I have a pc I built myself (specs in my profile) with Windows 10 installed on a normal 500GB HD. A year ago I did a clean install of Windows 10 onto a new 500GB SSD I bought. I also have a 3TB internal drive for media, etc.
Currently, when the pc boots, it goes to a screen that recognizes 2 Windows installations and offers an option to load either. It automatically chooses the SSD Windows to boot after 3 seconds.

Last night, I started having trouble with the 3TB internal drive (very slow, years old, time for an upgrade). I eventually restarted my computer and it went into a "Scanning and fixing drive E" screen for about an hour. I let it run and eventually came back to my Windows desktop but the E: drive was corrupted (would not open from My Computer- generic "read error" after a minute).

I decided to remove it and so I shut down, grounded, and unplugged the SATA cable from both the E: drive and my old 500GB HD with the old Windows installation. When I tried to reboot, BIOS returned a boot error. In BIOS config, it still pointed to USB drive first, then my SSD for boot priority. Would not work even plugging back in the 500GB. It was only when I plugged both drives in did the boot process into Windows proceed (still with the dual installation notice). Luckily, my E: drive mounted again and seems ok.

But the whole process ... Read more

A:Need Help with dying drive & dual HDD Windows 10 installation

When Windows installs, it creates a Hidden System Partition without a drive letter. This partition holds all of the Boot information.
If you leave your old Windows HDD attached with the System Partition, and add an SSD or another drive and do a clean install to that new drive, Windows will use the old Windows Hidden System Partition for the Boot file and install Windows on the SSD. If you unplug the old Windows drive and just try to boot off of the SSD it will not boot because it does not have access to the Hidden System Partition.
I would start over with the SSD. Unplug all other HDD's including USB. Boot off of your Install Media and choose to do a Custom Install. Where it comes to install Windows, Drive Options, choose to Delete all partitions on the SSD. Go next. Windows will automatically create partitions, including the Hidden Partition, and format them during the Windows install. Once Windows is finished installing, attach your other HDD's. Boot into Setup (Bios) go to the Boot Tab, Move the SSD to First Boot Device. Save and Exit.

I have troubles with - at least - one of the computers in the little network here. I will describe some of the troubles.
-Links to internetpages on the desktop dont work. I need to paste those in a blank window.
-2 weeks ago the home internetpage was blocked. After looking in a lot of forums I found how to change the homepage to Google. (by changing the registry)
-Online scanners for spyware dont start/are interrupted or dont find anything wrong
-Windows installer is coming up after every click I make to install Symantec Antivirus. But Symantec is already installed.
-I tried programs like Ccleaner and ATF; also Combofix. The last one was also interrupted (black screen). I installed the recovery console. Dont know how to delete this console.
-Even when I dont use this computer, it is like the computer is busy - at times (sounds like when using a program busy converting media files)
-I couldnt activate my membership. Not using the first link, nor the second one. Got a message that something wrong.
-I found srchassctl in the registry. Erased the Search Assistant. After rebooting ACMRU was gone, but SrchAssCtl is here again
-I found msmsgs a lot of times on this computer. I think the problems started with a message in the Live messenger.

Now I will paste the properly files to this topic. DDS and Attach

Hi
I'm having some weird problems with one of my internal HDDs. I have 2 640 WD Caviar Black. One of them has only one partition, used only for media (music, films, photos). About 2 days ago Windows start giving warning messages about that driver.
ImageShack? - Online Photo and Video Hosting
I installed Crystal Disk Info and this is what it shows:
ImageShack? - Online Photo and Video Hosting
I start testing the HDD using Disk Check, Tuneup Disk Doctor, WD LifeGuard Doctor, Disk Checkup inside Windows and Disk Check + Ultimate Boot CD on boot to see if is something wrong but everything shows up OK. Also I changed the SATA cables and re-tested, with same results.
Now here's the weird thing. About a few months ago I noticed that sometimes, while listening to music or watching a movie(all stored on that drive) I start experiencing low FPS, sometimes even 0 & the video/audio player start freezing. And always at the same frame/minute. So I backup up all the data, tried Disk Check and formated the drive and then Disk Check again. Everything turned out OK. About 2 weeks ago I had some serious driver conflict and I posted a thread here, under driver section. Apparently, I was able to isolate the problem and fix it till a week ago when an old 250 GB IDE drive
running on an external enclosure stopped working. Windows warnings claimed that the file system got corrupted and that I need to format the drive. I tried formatting the drive but it failed since now Disk Check was run ... Read more

Your second pic shows health status BAD, if i were you i would quit running programs to diagnose and get my stuff BACKED UP, NOW. If it's still running get everything off that drive while you still can. Then you can mess with the drive, cause when it goes it will be to late.

Hello all,

I have been having a problem for quite some time now. I'm unsure when it started happening because it's been going on for such a long time now. So, here's whats been going on.

Every time i try to delete something, it finishes deleting and the 'Deleting' Windows stays open and it tells me its calculating how much time is remaining and it says 0 bytes left. o to get rid of the window i have to restart windows explorer from the task manager. Another problem i've been having is that when i rename a file, i can't X out of the window that i renamed the file in and i have to restart windows explorer for it to work. After i restart WE the folder/file is renamed. The last problem linked to this is that whenever i move/copy a file, it keeps the 'Moving' window open and i can't close it unless i restart windows explorer.

It's a real pain to deal with this and if anyone could help me out that would be great...

I have an HP desktop running Windows Vista x64 Bit. If you need anymore info just let me know. Thanks guys

Wecome Vinny,
I think that we may be able to solve your problem. Initially, a few reasons come to mind for your problem. Lets go step by step
Update and make a full anti virus scan
Run an SFC scan
System Files - SFC Command
Run 3 times if errors are found.
Finally, if nothing else is found, hit alt cntrl and delete at the same time on your keyboard, bring up task manager.
Go to process, click show process from all users. Then give us a screen shot.
Take a memory test

help.

when i logged on to my windows account:
vista reverted to classic theme;
i cant access my documents, My computer, the control panel. i cant go on windows explorer or access any files whatsoever;
there was an error message that said: 'catalyst control center: host application has stopped working.' ;
also there was an error message that 'C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable' (or similar);
opera doesnt work:" Startup Error:Opera has failed to access or upgrade your profile. This may have occurred because your computer has insufficient resources available or because some files are locked by other applications. You may have to restart your computer before Opera will start again.";
the same thing happens with many other programs.;
i cant seem to do anything that requires admin privileges (i am on an admin account but not the root admin): for example when i click show processes for all users(in the task manager) it doesnt do anything.;
the computer is about slower than usual(logging on took a long time, start menu freezes up a bit, search doesn't work);
to me it seems like a number of files and folders where moved or deleted (like in program files or something).
could this be a virus, or just a buggy or incompatible software(I just installed Miro)?

thanks

hi all

First I know this has been asked a many times but no solutions seems to work for me. I have a bunch of stuff going wrong and all seems to related to each other.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
That is how the problem progressed:

1. I was trying to enable Telnet service and found out that 'Turn Windows Features on/off' in Control panel > Programs and Features is a blank list.

I checked on internet and i found out that it means my windows update wont be working as well so i check it:

2. Windows update gives the error 80070002 and it does not check for updates.

3. Again check net and it said to run sfc/scannow in command prompt (as administrator). I did it. and it gives error 'Windows Resource Protection can't execute the command'.

I have tried everything. I have tried:
msconfig.exe to enable/disable services and restarting and rechecking.
Uninstalling my Avast Antivirus.
Running MS Fixit tool.
I have checked disk check in advanced startup options.
Nothing works. I dont have Windows CD coz my laptop came installed with windows.

I am mainly looking for input...I havent tried W8 at all so essentially know very little about it.
I am usually pretty fast to try out a new OS and accept the new technology ....but I failed to do such with W8.
From what little I have read some just dont like it....Change is often bad as people want familiarity so they dont seem lost on the new OS.
So with{un} familiarity aside ...I am interested more in its short comings such as useful functions lost if there are any.
Also is it multi tasking friendly.
I notice right away that the desktop is essentially gone as we know it and is filled with your business for everyone to see.

Here i am again, complaining about my system..
As my previous topics, this one i think is more serious as i cant boot nor open up advance boot options(f8 dont work). As soon the manufacturers logo show off, an error: "Disk read error. Press ctr+alt+del to resatrt." It remains unless i press shutdown. Power on and it still shows the same.

I havent finished the download of the iso(to be used as a recovery method) thats why i opt for another way which is to recover a backup copy of my registry(which iv done by manually exporting it).  However, i have encrypted it before with my administrative user account. Now, im not able to decrypt it via cipher or keys as if i run: "cipher /c thatfilename.reg" it informs me that only the user(my account) and certificate thumbprint can decrypt it. No found backup certificate or keys. Bad for me i dont know how to recover it via the certificate thumprint....

My last option that i try is use EaseUs Data Recovery Wizard, which i have googled about tools that can decrypt files...
Glad it runs even im only using the recovery console. I installed it on my memory card(as my pc can still detect it). Im new to this tool and still dont know what should i click on for a spedific purpose. But i have tried the partition recovery, since im thinking that maybe it could still detect missing/lost files on the drive by which windows is installed..  It search then rebuild directories for more than 4 hours. remaining time is already at 00:... Since the drive still works you might want to give SpinRite a try.  This isn't free and will probably run for days before it fixes your problems.  I do not see you getting your data back any other way since it is encrypted.  Encryption is great for keeping information private, but I've see a whole lot of data lost due to encryption.  In the end only you can say how much your data is worth.

Ok I have Windows Defender. Along with SpyCatcher, AVG anti virus and AVG anti spyware, Spyware Terminator, VundoFix, Ad-Aware SE, Spyware Doctor and Spybot S&D. Reciently found that I have a pop up generator. So I did a scan with Windows Defenter can came back clean. I then did a scan with every single other program I have and EVERY program came back with multiple fairly serious threats. So basically 50 viruses got past Windows Defender. So obviously it does not find viruses effectively. Do what does it do? Should I just remove it?

A:Does Windows Defender Even Do Anything? I Dont Think It Does...

Windows Defender is an anti-spyware tool not an anti-virus. Using more than one anti-spyware program increases your protection coverage. No single product is 100% foolproof and can detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security industry is in a constant state of change with new infections coming out on a daily basis. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes spyware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Thus, a layered defense using several products to supplement your anti-virus and scanning in safe mode provides the most complete protection.

Make sure you have restarted your computer since then. Try updating ONLY important updates, possibly selecting a few at a time to download and update. Let me know if it still fails. Restart>select some updates (important ones first, then slowly working your way to other updates you want to have installed)>installl>restart again. If it works keep doing this method

These two things likely don't have an effect on the updates, but try them anyway:

1. Do you know if you have all your drivers currently updated?

2. Has windows been activated yet?

I have a laptop and 2 days ago started to act strange, first Google Chrome went dead, couldn't keep open a tab (webpage)for more than 10 seconds, gave me a error message saying that Google chrome couldn't load, i was able to used a restore point and reinstall google. but last night windows didn't want to start anymore, only show the "Windows boot Manager" (Picture 1), i cant go on Safe Mode, only one screen the "Windows Boot Manager" then when i used the Windows Installation Cd" and tried to "Repair your Computer"(Picture 2), i used the "star up Repair Tool" but is not working, it showed that find a error (picture 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) but when its done and want to restart it goes back to the same screen again "Windows boot Manager"(Screen 1), after the "starup repair tool" restar i tried to dont boot from the "CD installation" but again took me back to the same screen again"Windows boot Manager".
i dont know what to do anymore.. i dont want to Install windows 7 again, im afraid im going to lose my files with the new installation..one thing that i dont really get it on the screen "system recovery options" (Picture 3)it shows that "location for windows is on "D", its not on "D" supposed tobe on "C", i included some screenshots that i took with my cell...
i tried to run chkdsk and fsc /scannow from the boot cd but no luck ( picture 11)

A:[SOLVED] Windows 7 dont want to start

Hi, you will need to use your OS dvd and boot from it access the command prompt ( this loads the sources sudirectory (folder) of a Ram disk identified by the drive letter x: (I see you can do this) at the cmd prompt, which will read x:sources, type:-

Code:
bcdedit | find "osdevice"
(exactly as you see here, press enter) now when windows loads the RE (repair your computer) it does not always allocate the drive letter that your OS is on. It may be some other drive letter. This cmd tells us what drive is allocated to the OS, we use this letter in our cmds.

Assume C: (if not change accordingly)

Type the following cmd's, pressing enter after each line.

Code:
Bcdedit /export c:\BCD_Backup
c:
cd boot
attrib bcd ?s ?h ?r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
BootRec /RebuildBcd
Restart computer, let us know how you get on.

TIP: print this out you will not have access once in the RE.

Hey fellas and gals, im in need of your extracurricular knowledge.

I cant seem to get windows running properly on my brand new system(ill put hardware info after i explain). Experiencing problems with tcpip.sys and C:\\$ft issues. My computer cant run anything because i cant reach desktop. Maybe if i try safe mode i can try a solution.

Solutions Ive Tried
Windows 7 64bit clean install
Windows Vista 64bit clean install.
Ive ran the diskcheck /n or whatever.
Memory diagnostic is good.

Ive formatted my drive and deleted it everytime. If i do manage to get Windows to run, epxlorer.exe has failed to run. but now i cant even reach that. Heres my hardware

you are infected with a virus

winxp.exe is a process which is registered as [email protected]\r "This virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and comes in the form of an e-mail message, in the hopes that you open its hostile attachment.\r" The worm has its own SMTP engine which means it gathers E-mails from your local computer and re-distributes itself.\r "In worst cases this worm can allow attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data.\r" This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

I recently decided to make a fresh reinstall of windows xp 32 bit. Now I have decided I would like to switch it and try a Linux based operating system but my computer always prompts the finish xp install. Is there anyhthing I can do to fix this ? It is like I have a half installed version of XP that is completely useless.

A:Windows Xp half installed now i dont want it.

Try using DBAN to format your drive. Or you can use Linux installation CD (DVD) and format the drive before you install Linux.

i let someone have a computer of mine i got it back but dont konw the password how do you get into windows or reset it something i have searched around in dos mode but cant find anything anyone know?

A:how can you get into windows if you dont know the password at the log in screen

If you can't get into a admin account then there is really no easy way to do it. There is a bootable disk that lets you registry edit and change the password from dos. I know it works on 2000 but not sure about XP though, depends on what you have, I can't quite remember the location of this program but I will search for it and let you know.

My Windows XP got infected and i dont see any files under C Drive / desktop especially my Photos on a drive.

when i checked the properties, It does show that files are available. when i try to open the folder says, empty.

I ran Malware bytes (quick scan) it found some trojans and upon reboot, there does not seem to be any virus issues. But still no luck on the files.

I am running the complete systesm scan using Malware Bytes. It is already 2 hrs. still it is running.

Hi guys.
I am having the same problem.

I want to reinstall the OEM verion of my Windows 8.1. But the thing is that i dont have the windows installation disc. You can say i lost it.

When i downloaded the Windows setup from Microsoft and insert the product key. It says- "This product key cannot be used to isntall a retail version of Windows 8.1".

I want to re-install Windows 8.1 OEM version on the same laptop by making new partitions to my Hard drive. So is there any alternate to reinstall the windows.
Thankyou..!!

Step One:

Reset your PC from the manufacturer recovery partition. You don't need Windows 8/8.1 DVD/USB/ISO.

Reset Windows 8

OPTION TWO

Reset Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 from within Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

5. If you have Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1

A) On the left side in PC settings, click/tap on Update & Recovery.
B) On the left side in Update & Recovery, click/tap on Recovery, click/tap on the Get started button under the Remove everything and reinstall Windows section on the right side

Step Two:

Once you have installed Windows again:

How do I go about splitting the main partition into 2?

I recently bought a Lenovo laptop that came preloaded with the usual bloatware. The only thing that caught my eye was Phone Companion. Apparently it allows you to send texts and make phone calls from you laptop and they go through your phone. It sounded kind of neat, even if I never used it.
So I started the app and the first thing it says is "Scan this QR code with your Android device to download the companion app!". It was like "what? No WP"? Just in case, I scanned the QR code anyway and of course the app doesn't exist in the Windows Phone store.
Is it strange of me to think that a Windows 8 app would have a WP companion app instead of just Android? Am I being unrealistic? I can see a normal Windows application being specific to the more popular mobile devices, but a Windows 8 app just feels like it is meant to go with Windows Phone. They share a design philosophy and language. Its like if there was a Kinect game that said "Now show your Android phone to Kinect to get started".
Is this what we can expect with Windows 10? PC/Phone combo apps that I cant run without an iPhone or Android?

Been lookin around for a tutorial about how to make my computer detect my External HD... nothing fixed my problem, first of all : I Cant see my External HD on Disk manage

when i turn on the HD i can feel it is working... so i tryed it on my other computer... it dosnt work as well so i tryed it on my bell expressvu, it dont detect as well

any idea?

A:Windows 7 dont detect External HD

Sounds like the external drive had died. It's possible just the enclosure electronics has died and the drive itself is still okay. You can remove it from the enclosure and install it as a 2nd hard drive in your computer, mount it in another external drive enclosure or buy a USB Universal Drive adapter and connect it to your computer that way.

I have a NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter that I use for this purpose but there are many other brands available as well. Works with IDE (PATA) and SATA drives from desktop and laptop computers.

A:windows dont start, black screen

Your USB devices may have tried to protect themselves from a power surge and shut down. Do the following to reset the ports. Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware, and post back your results.

So my laptop has this issue thing where when I move it around too much, it decides to shut off windows without any warning / crashes sometimes. So as I carried it downstairs today, it did it again only this time when I started it up.. it gave me the Acer logo and gave me my selected color for the lockscreen (mine being light blue) if you know what I'm talking about. If I press basically any key, it'd flicker black or become black unless I press another key I think and it'd revert to the light blue screen. I tried fixing it in every way. I pressed ESC a bunch of times to load up the InsydeH20 Setup Utility and tried spaming f12 to go to the boot menu but nothing works. My laptop's dead. And this is important if I will get any help or replies, I'm only 14. Me and my dad tried fixing it earlier but again to no avail. If you need photos of my laptop, my screens on the InsydeH20 Setup Utility (Information, Main, Security, Boot, Exit) please ask and I will take some. Also for people who have used this insydeh thing, my boot in the boot tab reads UEFI which I can change to Legacy but if I do and save changes and exit it'll give me a black screen that says:

You will have to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows. There is a section during the install near the end after Networking called Regional and Language settings. Here you choose the Default Language and Time Zone for your computer. Unless your Disk is set to install unattended you should have seen this dialog box.

If I just simply double click on one of those programs I get a process that is always 120k no matter which program and it will keep allowing you to click just making even more of these processes. I can get these programs to start if I run as administrator but when they start explorer crashes, I have tried searching the web but no-one else seems to have quite the same problem and I wouldnt have a clue as to what I could do to stop it. I would class myself as a quite knowledgeable with computers but I just cant figure this one out. Any help would be great and now my system specs:

2) After reinstalling, did you download and install all drivers including the chipset driver?

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I'm not sure that I know what could have gone wrong, but I do have a few questions for you.

Did you use a DVD from the manufacturer of your computer to do this fresh install?
Or did you use a retail W7 DVD?

Did the DVD already have service pack one installed?
