Like the topic title says, my computer has recently become very slow and is constantly freezing...I tried to clean it up using the preparation guide but, so far, nothing seems to have changed. I'm very careful with my downloads and web activity, so I have no idea why it's behaving like this - the biggest changes I've made were to install MS Office 2007 (which takes about 5 minutes to load each time) and I upgraded my Internet service (they offered a free Security package download, which I took advantage of).Well, here's my HijackThis log! Hi,I'm running windows XP, and recently received an email that I was told was not sent by the person it said on the email. I assumed it was a virus that attached to my friend's address book. Since then, my computer has slowed down considerably. It also freeezes a few times a day and I have to reboot the computer. I have AVG anti-virus, and have run several scans that have not found anything. I have also run malwarebytes and spybot which have also come back clean. I still feel there is something wrong. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi!
I'm kind of new to this, but I think I've followed the 5 steps correctly (although i couldn't find out how to find the extra.txt-file).

My computer started to act weirdly about three days ago. Almost everytime I watch a movie or a clip my computer slows down really much, and a lot of times it freezes completely, forcing me to reboot. It also happens when I browse the internet, although not as often. Which is why I'm not able to finish the Panda Scan.

Hope you'll understand my not so developed swedish-english, and if you need the extra.txt, please advice me on how to get it. Just getting the main.txt when dss finishes.

I have an Acer Aspire laptop running Windows XP Home. The system is showing 53 gb of c drive capacity with about 40 gb of available space and 512 mg of RAM. The system constantly freezes up and I have to hold the power button down to shut down the system and restart it. A lot of times after I start the system up I will click on the Internet Explorer icon and nothing will happen. The hourglass will appear for a brief second and then nothing happens. Some of the things that I have done to try to fix these problems are as follows: I installed a registry repair program which when I ran it the first time it found over 200 problems. I ran it again tonight and it showed over 100 problems. The Acer computers come with a dual partitioned drive. I have Norton Partition Magic and I was able to repartition the drive into one large one instead of two small ones. This did not help either. Programs installed on the laptop include: Microsoft Office Pro 2003, Targas docking station, in addition to web based database programs. Any ideas???

I was thinking about transferring all files and settings to another Acer that I have and reformatting the drive on the problem computer. I have a USB cable that I connected to both laptops but the file and settings transfer wizard never finds the connection. I don't know if I have the correct cable or if I am plugging it into the right place. Please Help!

A:Acer Aspire Is Slow And Freezes Constantly

There are a lot of possible reasons for this happening to your computer. My 1st guess is that if you've found about 100 problems with your registry or such, your best approach is to try to fix them 1st. You may need more tools than what you have.

If you have that many registry issues and they haven't fixed, that will in fact cause that sort of problem.

Post back what tools you have so we'll know the best approach to take. Also, I'll post some FREE tools that you should download and use.

Because of the problems you're having right now, I wouldn't do a file/transfer (settings),, because you may transfer the problem over to the other hard drive, or the same one that's been repartitioned.

You also need to do a couple of different virus scans and check out the results.

Hello. I have a Gateway laptop that is incredibly sluggish and freezes up more than it flows. I've taken every step on the "Slow Computer Checklist" and it hasn't improved at all. It froze up during windows updates and froze up at the same spot (twice) during a full system scan I ran with Avira. Any suggestions on what the problem may be or how I can be assisted to fix it? I used this site a few years ago and I was absolutely and completely satisifed with the assistance I received. Thanks in advance!

P.S. I've also done a full scan with Spybot and Startup Mechanic. No luck:(

Im extremely frustrated, computer keeps freezing not sure why. The freezing occurs randomly sometimes it occurs just after startup while other times i can play a game for a few hours before it freezes. Ive been in a repair shop a couple times and they havent solved the problem despite replacing the mother board and power supply. They also reformated the computer and still get the freezing problem. Also when it freezes i turn the power switch off on the back and then i get a noise from the speakers that sounds like someone tapping on a the desk. How can i discover the problem?

The computer is just over 2 years old.
I have a p4 3 ghz processor, 768 mb of ram, Ati radeon x700 video card.

I had windows 7 for a month and everything was just fine. But my computer started freezing and restarting randomly just a few days ago. It got to the point when the screen would freeze at startup - you know, when the windows logo shows up? So I reformatted my computer to windows xp (all my files and programs are erased from existence!) but it still freezes at startup when the windows logo comes up. Sometimes i get "lucky" and i actually get to the desktop screen, I would poke around a little and then BOOM- the screen turns weird colors and my mouse cant move. I am forced to restart my computer and continue this crazy loop. I dont know where to look for help. I would greatly appreciate any assistance!

My computer has been constantly freezing the past couple of days. It is a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP Home and 2 GB of RAM. It started freezing shortly after I would reboot. Both the keyboard and mouse wouldn't respond. It had been a while since I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows, so I decided to try that. The weird part is, the computer actually freezes up during the reinstall process. It gets to 33 minutes of the reinstall of Windows XP and then asks me to set the Regional Settings. When I try to move the mouse to click Next, the mouse doesn't move. If I try to just press Enter to click Next, nothing happens. Not sure what could be causing this. It appears the fan is working fine, so I don't think it's overheating. Thanks for any help.

My computer has been constantly freezing each time I boot it up. there is no blue screen, it just freezes on whatever image its displaying. Sometimes I'll be lucky to get one minute out of it without it freezing. And when it freezes I have to reboot it. I tried Safe Mode and it doesn't freeze while in it.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Welcome

Actually you gave us quite a few clues. Try a clean boot, if it freezes, then the problem is probably a driver, if it does not freeze follow the clean boot instructions and find the problem. I am guessing the anti virus.

Hello, a couple of days ago, my sister went to some website to watch a tv show and the computer froze minutes after she left the website. I ran a scan with malwarebytes, and it found a bad registry on my computer. I choose to remove the registry, but the computer still freezes. So as of right now, I get no pops or error messages. The computer just freezes at random times. It usually does this an hour or twenty minutes after I start the computer or when its loading the OS. I was able to get a DDS log but when I went into safe mode and tried to get a GMER log, it froze right after it finished scanning. I hope you guys can help. Thanks in advance.

I had this problem before. Although I am not sure it was the same error message. I got advice from this site and my computer worked fine for several months. Now my Asus laptop works fine for several days. I do a search in Foxfire or IE, everything is working ok and then for no apparent reason the screen freezes up and the hour glass icon that shows the page is downloading goes on indefinately. I have to use my retore disk to get it to work again. I have Vista on this computer. I downloaded Service Pack 2 and all the other updates I needed.

Hey everyone, I have a Windows 7 Home Premium service pack 1 Sony Vaio x64 laptop.  It constantly freezes and the problem has been getting more frequent.  There is no pattern that I can see.  It may run fine for a little while, or within a few minutes it will freeze.  The mouse will not move and Ctrl-Alt-Dlt doesn't respond.  I have to do a hard shutdown when it happens. What should I do? Thanks!

It has been freezing more and more since then, especially while using media center, or other music programs. The screen stays the same, but becomes unresponsive, audio skips like a broken record. My cpu usage also seems to roller coaster. This problem is becoming worse and worse. Please help, I think you guys may know what to do. I've tried running all sorts of virus scans, etc(McAfee, avg, spybot, Malwarebytes.) I also ran MSConfig to try to weed out some startup programs... But the problem still persist.

Hey, I've been having this problem on my laptop. Right now, I'm typing this in Safe Mode. Anyway, basically, it will freeze after I do just about anything. If I try to click a shortcut, if I try to access the start menu, etc. etc. I am running a HP Pavilion dv6000 and running Windows Vista. Here's my HJT file.

My gf has been having this problem for a few years with her computer (pretty much since she first got it) and I'm wondering if there's any particular reason why this might be happening. She has a IBM Thinkpad with Windows XP if that helps.

My computer has been freezing and restarting a lot lately. It cannot go more than 1 hour without doing so. It happens especially when I go to game. I'm not sure what could be causing it. I do know that it is not an overheating issue in the computer. I have 3 fans running in it. It is also not a memory issue I have 2gb of RAM and 300g Hardrive. It is also not a dust issue, I've my computer and everything seems to be clean. I have also disable that my computer does not restart during systems failures through the BIOS and also through my computer. Not sure what is causing it, but any help would great greatly appreciated. (Surprised I was able to post hehe)

A:Computer constantly freezes and restarts on its own.

A computer that freezes is usually caused by overheating or a failing Power Supply Unit. Even though you have done this, Take the side off the of the computer and blow out all fans with a can of compressed air. Start the computer and make sure all fans are spinning. Look at the label for the PSU and report the Make, Model# and Wattage. Boot into Setup (Bios) and go to PC Health or some such, Post +12V line for the PSU and the temperatures.
Also try running in a Clean Boot.

So I have a windows 7 computer and the problem is that for some reason my computer freezes up or restarts itself and when it is back on, the lan hardware is no longer working (it appears to say that either the lan is not plugged in or that the hardware is broken). So, I restart my computer again and the lan problem is no longer an issue. However, the computer goes back to the same cycle after a few minutes or hours. I have check for viruses, spyware, checked for registry problem, defragmented my computer and the problem still occurs. I am pretty good with computers but this problem appears to not go away and it is pretty annoying. Please help me out.

My computer is custom made
it is using windows 7 ultimate, it has a Intel motherboard which is DP35DP media series.
I have 8gigs of ram, Intel core 2 quad cpu model number Q9550 @ 2.83ghz.
1.5 tb of harddrive, ATI RADEON HD 4800 series graphics card, and a network adapter pci (since my motherboard network lan is not working)

If anyone needs more information do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for the help

A:Computer freezes or constantly restarts

Is this problem with the onboard LAN or the PCI NIC? Have you updated the drivers?

Hi. I despratly need some help. I am 16 and my parents got a new compaq persario s4020wm desktop a little under a year ago. Ever since we have had it, it does nothing but freeze on us. We bought some memory, took it to a computer professional, spybot, etc. We sent it back to compaq and they did a complete check and it wasnt anything that they could fix. After the first 218 MB memory upgrade it did goof for about 3 or 4 months. It sometimes freezes over 10 times a day and gets so bad that I dont even start it up sometimes. I am trying to finish up papers and what not because im graduationg this year but I cant with this computer. Alot of people say "well I guess you just got a bad apple, go and get a dell". Me nor my parents have the money for a new computer right now and I dont see why this one isnt working. Please someone with some expiernce give me some input. I have 736MB or ram installed right now and it freezed twice while registering for this website.

A:I dont know what to do. Computer freezes constantly

I'll probably sound stupid for this but honestly, just sounds to me like you need to remove the case, get a nice big fan and set it right there up next to your computer, cause it sounds like you're overheating. Either that or try switching your ram around (take one strip and put it in the other's slot, take that strip put it in the other slot).

Figured I'd just throw it out there...

My computer keeps freezing, why?

Every time I'm using it, it doesn't matter what program i open, it just freezes. Well what i mean is that my windows explorer stops working and a message pops up saying that windows explorer has stopped working. when i look at the details it says that the problem name is: In Page Error. I really dont understand what that means or refers to. Other programs stop responding as well, practically EVERY program does, but more often its windows explorer that stops working and restarts over and over. Hi,

Number of problems with my laptop but the main one now is that it constantly freezes (every 5 mins or so).
I wanted to post a log here from HijackThis but it says "your system denied write access to the Hosts".

Also both Malwarebytes & Avast! freeze the computer when I scan my computer for infections (this was happening a few months before the freezing every 5 mins started).

Really need to get this sorted now so I would appreciate any help!

Thanks,
Gubbo

A:my computer constantly freezes on start up

Welcome to TSF.

Let's try fixing some of these and also disable some programs to make sure they are not causing the startup problems:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido (only if you have Windows 2000 or XP). If y... Read more

Since day one I have encountered constant computer freezing and lock-ups, first it happened in the bios. After that; during the os install. Not just once but multiple times, requiring me to start from the beginning. I'm talking almost a dozen times just to get the os installed.

After the install, if it wasn't freezing during boot or during startup it was freezing at the desktop. If I was lucky I could get just a few minutes out of it before it would freeze. (I should mention after it froze if I didn't hold the pwr button down until it shut off I would have to wait a few minutes and it would shut itself off)

Needless to say I can't do much to try and figure out the problem.
After doing some research, I guessed it could be one of 3 things: psu, mobo or ram.

I started with the cheapest of those and replaced the ram today. Everything was going great, booted flawlessly. Started windows, f... Read more

My computer started to freeze within 5 minutes of logging on and never finished loading, well it appeared so. I first opened Task Managaer to see what was using up the cpu and it appeared to be services.exe. I ran an anti-virus scan and it found a trojan which was disinfected. I then searched for the file name services.exe and it found several, i was advised to keep the one in system 32 and delete the rest, which i did. However the computer still freezes after logging on and i have to enter safe mode to allow me to use the computer. I opened task manager and services.exe is not eating up the cpu this time and nothing else seems to be, but i may be mistaken.

Hi all, here are the various log files as instructed. My laptop (winxp system) is taking ages to start up and every time i try to open up a folder/browser or any other action, it freezes for a good while before it resumes the action. Essentially what usually would take a second to do is now taking 5 minutes. I've tried to run the avg virus scan but it just hangs after about 40+ minutes of scanning, the same thing happens to the lavasoft ad aware scan too. I appreciate any/all help.

My computer recently began to freeze, about the time when I updated to Firefox 3.6. At first I thought it was just the internet that was messed up, but it began to freeze even though I wasn't using the internet. Randomly it would just freeze, sometimes after a few minutes others after a few seconds. I have to hit the power button because leaving it alone for a while won't work. I tried to clean the registry but it didn't work. I have a Windows XP, its a desktop computer, I have Intel, and its about 4 years old. if you need any more info please ask! I've had many problems with this computer but I can't afford to buy another one for another two years. Please help! I don't know what else to do.

A couple weeks back I got the good ol' "Malware Defense" thing pop up and tell me I had all sorts of problems. I looked around the 'net and found lots of potential solutions, and seemed to have it all taken care of after various scans with Malwarebytes and other software. However in the last few days the computer frequently freezes up, and it doesn't seem to happen during a certain activity or anything like that-just at random. I don't know if it's related. I've continued to run many scans, and sometimes they come up with nothing, and other times they will find problems and fix them, which makes me think new malware (or something bad...) keeps getting frequently added to the computer. Oddly, while I'm running scans and things like that, I don't believe it's ever frozen. But when the computer is really in use, that is when the problems arise. I've tried a few more things today to try and fix it, and haven't had any problems, though I haven't been on the computer all that much since the last 4 hours were taken up by scans. So, I'm hoping maybe someone here can take a look at the logs I have created using the guidelines from this forum, and see if anything stands out, or if there's anything else I need to do.The DDS.txt log is seen below, and the attach.txt and ark.txt files are attached. I believe that is what I need for now.-------------------------------------DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Tom and Sarah... Read more

A:Had Malware Defense, and now computer freezes constantly

Just to update really quickly, the problem HAS in fact continued (I had said originally I hadn't had any more problems that day). It froze probably 4 or 5 times yesterday in a fairly short amount of time being used. Also, if this information helps any, when it freezes, I still have usage of the mouse, as far as movement. Clicking on anything does nothing, but I can still move the curser around, as opposed to the type of freezing when nothing at all works. Thanks, hope someone can help!

Hi everyone. I'm new here, but this forum is the place I came to help a relative fix her laptop's freezing* issues. The computer is a couple years old, and it has never worked properly. It's a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 SP1. She insists on using AOL as her browser and mail app, and I can't get her to switch to something more stable or less resource-hogging. The computer freezes constantly, but naturally I suspect there's a deeper problem than just her use of AOL. I think it might be a registry issue, but I don't have enough knowledge of computer registries to fix it. That's just my hunch, though. I have run anti-virus and anti-malware programs (Avast and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) on it for the past year at least, and she has been virus and malware free for some time.

Recently, she received an error message from Windows Explorer. I can't tell you exactly what it said b/c she didn't write it down, but the short story is I ran the system file checker via the command prompt (sfc /scannow) and received a message saying that the Windows Resource Manager found corrupt files but was unable to fix them. I ran this in safe mode and after a normal boot-up. So here are my questions:

1) if I were to post a CBS log file from her system file checker on bleepingcomputer.com, is there someone who could help me interpret it?
2) should I post the CBS log file that I obtained from running Windows 7 in safe mode or under normal conditions... Read more

I have been warned by my internet service that my PC has a malware called "Trojan: Mebroot" and my internet will later be suspended if I do not fix it.

If my computer is started normally, after a period of time it tends to freeze/crash and sometimes even display a bluescreen. Also, if i press ctrl+printscreen+c it will also freeze my computer.

At the moment, I am still using this computer but started on "Debugging Mode" and my computer doesn't freeze (unless I try to do a screenshot). My internet supplier (OPTUS) still warns me to remove the virus otherwise they will suspend my internet.

It has been pretty sudden, my laptop the past 2-3 days now has been freezing suddenly after about 1-2 hours after start up. On one occasion it was still at the login screen and it was frozen. Mostly it has occurred when I was just simply on Facebook, checking email, and doing smaller tasks that I have had no issue with just last week. Once frozen, it does not respond to Ctrl+Alt+Delete or Alt+F4, only a hard restart seems to make it work again.

I ran Malwarebyte, Viper Antivirus in Safe mode, nothing was found. I also ran CC registry cleaner and it found some issues with the Window System-32 files. It was de-fragmented about 6 days ago. The laptop itself is Toshiba Satellite and is about 3 years old, running Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate. I'm not sure if it could be a hard drive starting to go out or something else, it just seems the issue has occurred rather suddenly which seems to make me think that something was downloaded/occurred very recently.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hello, Techsupportforum. I've been plagued by this problem for years now and I just got sick of it. What's been going on is that my computer freezes, makes a jarring sound when it does, and will stay this way for anywhere between thirty seconds and ten or so minutes. This mostly happens when I am actively doing something on my computer such as browsing the web or playing a game. This can happen as many as a dozen times a day, or once a week. Below is a copy of my system from Speccy64. Some information not included is that I use Avast and Malwarebytes for anti-virus. In the past I've used SpyBot S&D, Microsoft Security Essentials, and AVG. All of them tell me my computer is virus free, so I'm pretty positive it isn't a virus-related problem. Thank you in advance for taking the time to help.

Hello mate.

Couple of Q's if you don't mind;
Where is the sound coming from; the PC, or speakers do you think?
The virtual drive; Is there an ISO attached to it constantly? GCP (I find) is to disabling any virtual drives you're not actively using.
Wouldn't hurt to check your NVidia drivers up to date also - You can do this by right-clicking anywhere on your desktop, select 'NVidia Control Panel', 'Help', 'System Info' and let me know the installed driver version.

That should get the ball rolling!

I recently moved to a new location and set up my computer.

Somewhere between BOOT and Windows XP starting up, my computer suddenly freezes. Sometimes it's delayed long enough for me to log into XP, only to crash a few seconds later. I assumed that maybe I attached something incorrectly, and checked the wires. They are fine.

Before my move, the computer never gave such problems. It's difficult for me to figure out exactly what to do or how to fix it when I can only use the computer properly for about a minute or so.

For a while, I tried going into Safe Mode or using a System Restore to move the computer back to a point where this issue did not occur. That worked for a time, and now it does not. The only way for me to use my computer now is to log into Safe mode with networking, and when I'm done, set the PC to stand by.

Another issue there - my computer refuses to stand by.

It would show off only to start right back up again on its own, and once the Welcome screen is displayed, either I can't type anything or the computer freezes.

I'm not sure why this is happening. Is there any solution to this?

Hello all,

This is my last resort to figure out why Bert (my computer) is dieing on me.

He is a 1 year old computer with Windows Vista 64 bit (Instal, not upgrade) Service pack 1, with 4 gb of Ram, a 500gb hard drive, and a 3.0GHz quad-core processor.

Lately, ive had troubles with him though,

It doesn't always start up correctly, and freezes on the Microsoft loading page, with the green loading bar.

When i try to start it in safe mode.. you'll all reconize this next part: It gets stuck on Crcdisk.sys (Yes, that infamous problem)

Ive googled the subject till i was blue in the face, and ive managed to get it to start up again (only 50% of the time) by doing the following:

I try to start up the computer, it freezes on the loading page
I hold the power button for 4 seconds to turn it off
Turn off the power bar
Press Bert's power button to drain any residual power
Turn on the power bar
Turn on Bert, and it starts properly.

So problem 1 is, id like to figure out how to fix the crcdisk.sys problem permanently, and the second problem is arguably worse:

When i do manage to turn it on, the computer is extremely unresponsive. It will freeze doing ANYTHING (Opening folders/files, Opening/closing windows, Opening/closing Firefox, or Internet Explorer, Loading anything in firefox or internet explorer... Basically anything that a computer can do, will freeze it.)

It will freeze, and the window will "Not responding", and sometimes if i wait a good 30 seconds -... Read more

Just recently my computer started doing this. Every 15-20 seconds or so, the computer will hang up for about 3 seconds, just did it right now, then has to catch up to what I'm typing or doing. As I watch it in the performance tab in the Task Manager, and it just did it again, the CPU Usage spikes from 10%-ish all the way to 100%. The page file usage memory remains constant. And it just froze again. Three times for typing just several sentences!! ARGHH!!!

Another thing to note is that my HDD LED light always stays on now, it used to flicker and go off, now it's on all the time, but the drive isn't making any kind of noise.

I have NOD32 anti-virus, Spybot S&D, and Webroot Spysweeper and they're all up to date and just ran them. I also have O&O Professional and just defragged as well.

No errors were found, yet I still get this VERY frustrating error.

I sure hope someone can help me or offer advice. Thanks in advance...

Hello,

I have been having trouble for a couple weeks with Firefox. Every so often Firefox will hang, and cause a total system freeze for a short period of time. Sometimes this can cause explorer to crash too, other times if for example I was watching a YouTube video or a Twitch stream, I get a message saying the shockwave plugin is not responding. This would then again cause an entire system lock up. I would then begin to attempt to open up task manager with the Ctrl+Shift+Esc combination. On my computer it would always instantaneously open up. During these experiences it does not show up at all. So I would then attempt to right click the taskbar to open Task Manager from the options there. The taskbar (as I'm assuming explorer was still hung) would not respond for a couple minutes until finally the menu pops up. I would then select Task Manager. After a short while (maybe 30 seconds) Task Manager would finally show up. It is here that I would see that there are two Task Manager processes. So I would attempt to kill one. I would select the one that was ~100 kb (which I'm assuming is the one that hasn't shown up yet as the other one had ~4000kb). This would be in vain as attempting to kill most processes was also in vain. So I started a round of anti virus and malware checks. I originally started with an Avast! boot time scan. I received an error of 42111. I looked into this and it seems as though Avast! was failing to scan an archived file. After this comp... Read more

I can't find a rational explanation for why this computer is slow and was hoping you could point me to some tools or diagnostics that would increase my ability to target the issue.

The computer does take more than 2 minutes to boot from cold.
Logging into our network takes just as long - and shouldn't, as other PCs at this site don't take that long.
Nothing unusual is found in msconfig when I check the startup tab. Nothing there is making is slow to boot.
Nothing in task manager is eating up resources to indicate potential virii.
Process Explorer (not that I'm an expert in using it) reports back mostly clean.

So, I'm scratching my head. What should I be looking for or trying next? Any general ideas?

A:Computer Constantly Slow

Correction: searchfilterhost.exe is currently eating 40-50% of my processor power. But the computer performs sluggishly even when that process reads at 0% of my processor power.

I'm not sure what to make of that result.

Hello,

I have been having some issues for the last couple of days with my computer.  I first experienced trouble with Firefox while watch a simple Twitch Stream.  For no reason (as the computer was completely idle save the stream) I received a message saying Shockwave Player (or some script on the page) stopped responding.  The popup gave me the option to wait for the script to respond, or to kill it.  I attempted to kill it, by opening up Task Manager.  This took maybe 3 minutes to open up, while in the process hung my entire system the whole time, and then led to Firefox itself to completely lock up.  As well, when attempting to open up Task Manager in the first place, if at first the window did not show up I would attempt to open it again.  The first time by using the Ctrl, Shift, Escape combination, and when that was unsuccessful (as it normally pops up instantly), I would thusly right click the taskbar to open it that way.  By doing this method it would take minutes for the popup from the taskbar itself to showup.  After finally getting Task Manager open, I would see two different Task Manager processes.  One at roughly 4k kilobytes of memory, while the other ~100.  As someone with a tiny bit of OCD I would close the smaller kilobyte one by right clicking it to kill the process from the popup menu.  Right clicking the process would give me no window, nor would hitting kill process from the tab on the Task... Hi Celeste

Uninstall Adaware 6.0 then do the following:

Download Adaware SE and install it. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. Also make sure to customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds then come back and post a fresh Hijack This log.

I was in a game that was full windowed so when I alt-tabbed to see if anything was going on in the background, my computer froze. No blue screen, it just froze. Alt+Ctrl+Del wouldn't work, nothing would. After restarting my computer it started up again, but again was real slow and after maybe 5 minutes it froze up like this again. So again I restarted it, this time it went into a startup repair that took several minutes. After it was finished it said it could not repair/complete, several corrupted and unreadable files on the hard drive. So I started up Windows again, and same thing. Slow use followed by the crash. So I restarted again, this time a message came up saying something like Sata 5-6 S.M.A.R.T. Disk Status: BAD(Or something similar to that). I told my friend who knows about computers, he told me my hard drive was bad, backup my files and get a new one. So I got a new hard drive(Old Hard Drive was a 1TB 7200RPM, SATA-II with 16MB Cache,New one is exact same except a 32mb Cache), backed up my files and installed it, and restored my files. That was yesterday, but after doing so I wasn't really able to use my computer until now. Again, when I started using it it got slow again then it crashed. Even though I replaced the hard drive. I ran Norton Ant... Read more

I am not sure if this is the right place for this post because I don't know what the problem is. I am running a Dell Inspirion 9400 Laptop with Windows XP and have all the latest service packs installed. I have a gig of RAM and about a 200G HD. I run Spyware Doctor, Avast, Regpro, and Wise Registry cleaner as well as a couple of other attack dogs I cannot think of just now. My computer is about three years old. I have had no major problems with it besides the usual Dell powersupply failures.

About four days ago I noticed the fan began to hum loudly and the computer slowed way down to a fraction of its normal speed and stayed that way until I reset. Upon resetting, the fan shuts off and speed returns to normal for a few minutes... then the fan comes back on and the computer slows down again. I have researched online for possible solutions. I have tried the following:

I ran evey spyware, anti-virus, and registry cleaner I have. They ran very slowly, but did seem to work. This made very little difference.

I ran msconfig.exe and disabled every application under "services" and "startup" that I could leaving only my wireless adapter, the microsoft services, and avast entries. This helped a little. The processor usage dropped from 100% to around 60% when the fan is on.

I did a CHKDSK on reboot and a defrag. No errors and no difference.

I took the computer apart and cleaned out the fan and intake for the cooling device that is attached to the heat s... Read more

Just a short word of advise is all I can offer.

Did you read the Announcement at the very top of this forum. It is about reg cleaners?

I don't care if they are free ones or paid ones, they always cause more problems than they fix.

Hi, hope you can help!

History to my problem...
Over the last month or so my pc began to intermittently slow right down. I am running windows 7 as my o/s. This has fairly rapidly become more and more frequent to the point where it is almost constantly running at this slow pace.

I have posted this in the hardware section as the HDD light at the fron of the pc is almost constantly on while this slow pace happens. This is the case right from boot up, so i figure is a hardware issue rather than a windows one.

I have tried cleaning the inside of the pc, resetting the RAM, as well as scanning the HDD and the RAM for errors. Nothing has resulted in an error being discovered.

I have also tried unplugging all hardware other than a usb keyboard, (brand new) videocard and the other essentials. This hasn't helped either.

Please can anyone help me with this, or point me in a good place to 'start'?

A:Very slow computer, HDD drive light on near constantly

Hello there. Several questions:

1.) Have you "Defragmented" your drive recently?

2.) Have you scanned your computer for malware recently?

3.) What percentage of your drive (in MY COMPUTER) is showing as FREE/USED space?
(Drives that are nearly full with data can slow down a computer's speed significantly)

4.) Does your drive make any "noise" such as grinding, clicking etc?

5.) Do you have a "Disk Health" utility that you can use to check your hard drive for errors?

-----
Press CTRL + ALT + DEL. Then choose "Task Manager." Next, click on the "Performance" tab. What is your CPU usage?

Hello all,

As of just a few days ago, my wireless connection is constantly sending and receiving packets whether I am surfing the web or not. I cannot pinpoint what is sending information. As this has never happened in the several years I've owned this PC and had this configuration, I'm a bit worried.

Also, my performance has recently taken a sizeable hit - both online and off. I've run various virus scans and AdAware, but fear as though I'm missing something. I've attached the required logs - please help if you can!

My computer has been BSODing for about a week now, I was getting IRQL_not_less_or_equal, and occasionally a page exceeder error or that, the main problem is that my computer has been running on normal mode now, but is very slow, and takes ages to respond, I have 4gb of RAM and it's never been this slow, also youtube videos are very slow, and freeze for like 3 seconds at a time then catch up, and I can't run games well, indicating a video driver issue maybe? Hello everyone,

As can be read in this topic, I'm having problems with the HDD light on the front of my computer. It is almost constantly on, even when I'm not doing anything with my computer at all.
Also, ever since it started, my computer is very slow. It seems like it's constantly busy doing things, the problem is that I don't know what it's doing.

As you read in the old topic, I've already replaced the HD for a brand new one. I've cloned my old drive onto the new one, and the problem persists, so I guess it has something to do with the things on the drive, and not with the drive itself. The problem with the noise that is mentioned in the topic is solved.

On my MsConfig screen, there are a lot of services checked, is this normal, or could this possibly be causing some problems?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) on an Acer Aspire M1641. The computer is about 6 years old and I've replaced the power supply and the graphics card (and the HD, of course).

I've also created a factory-reset disk using Acer eRecovery software. So, if necessary, I could reinstall Windows on my old HD to see if it would work. However, I'd rather keep it in the current state (with all the files still on it) so I'll have some kind of backup if my new drive would ever fail. If someone thinks reinstalling windows would work, I would try it though.

The services are checked because they are being used.  If you remove the check from a box it disables the service.

Open the Task Manager and click on processes to see what is constantly running.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Windows XP - My computer started making the popcorn popping sound like it is constantly writing to the hard drive and the computer is slow or occasionally gets hung up. Not sure if it's related, but recently I received hundreds of mail delivery failure notices in Outlook Express for mail I had not sent to people I do not know/have in my address book. I changed my password and it stopped for a month, but lately I get about 5 delivery failures a day.

MSE finds nothing, but lately it takes 24 hours to complete a full scan.

I appreciate any assistance you can offer. Thanks!

Hello! I?ve suddenly encountered problems loading windows, after many hours of trying to fix the problem I?ve had enough!!

Problem 1:

When I log into windows (or before I even attempt to) my hard drive starts to become extremely busy and after entering my password my desktop will take around 10 mins to load (it would usually take 10 seconds), first it will be my desktop wallpaper, then the start menu will appear then the Icons?it takes a further 10/15 mins for the PC to ?Settle Down? and stop being so slow?up to that point the hard drive is going crazy! It then takes ages to load any programmes and takes an age to log off\shut down.

I have run AVG and Ad-aware, nothing detected?I have also stopped any programmes loading at start-up in msconfig, all except from ctfmon.exe which won?t stop from loading.

The processes running are:

A:Computer suddenly slow/hard drive constantly busy & other problems

Well the first thing I want you to check is this:
Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager

In the window that loads click the + next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers > Select Primary IDE Channel > Properties > Advanced Settings and tell us what the settings there are.

These setting controls the speed that your harddrive transfers data at.

It is also possible that your harddrive is failing which would cause slow read/write times. If you could post the maker of your harddrive we can direct you to their specific diagnostic tool to see if your harddrive is in fact failing.

Hello everybody. hope you can help me fix my computer. I feel I have a problem with internet browsing and connection. I tried Firefox, Google Chrome, and Internet explorer and all are slow. MSN messenger freezes all the time.
Somehow I decided to remove Kaspersky antivirus because it started acting weird, and that was a mistake.

Anyway, I downloaded DDS but I could not open it, because it's associated with AutoCAD and when I try to open it, it opens in Notepad with weird characters.

I ran GMER and here is my log:

Hello, and thanks in advance for your help! I used to have an account that I donated with but its been a few years and I forgot what my username was. Anyways, my laptop is beginning to run slowly and my programs freeze up frequently, especially outlook. I used to get on here and do Hijack This! logs, but I guess that isnt your protocol anymore?

I saw on another thread a link to this (PCHF System Scans) for system scans. Should I go this route in order to get some help cleaning up my laptop? I can post these results if it would help.

Thanks!

I attempted a system restore yesterday and it didn't restore. It says source%system root%\registration. So I did a disk check and it showed errors and warnings.

Errors: 4107 capi2, 1000 app, 5206 system, 3011 & 3102 load performance, 100 bonjour, 1002 app, 10010 restart.

Warning: 4609 event system, 1530 user profile service, 3036 &10024 search (gatherer), 10010 restart.

Also, I cannot install Windows updates. I have not updated in about a year

Do any of these warnings/errors have anything to do with my computer performance. Any advice/help is much appreciated.

A:Computer slow, sometimes freezes

Hello and welcome Nayners for starters I would be so worried about the updates because there is so much crap going on at the moment with them trying to get us to use 10. I always set updates as in my pic and if you do not want to "upgrade" to 10 there are methods you can set in place to stop it and I can link you to a couple of things for that.

First up and in safe mode run these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
You do not have to run the /f and /r switches but I always do.

Hello Tyred and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

I recommend posting a question in the XP forum. They can assist with non-malware related performance issues. Let them know that you have been to this forum and no malware was found.
