Suggested CNET security update service

Q: Suggested CNET security update service

I ran across the following download at CNET's

It's called CNET Catch-Up. The purpose is to notify you when there are updates to software installed on your machine. It also catches ad-ware and shows security updates available.

In my brief glance at the security offerings, I can't say that it was necessarily complete. But I'm no security expert.

The free download has a 95% approval rating which is very high. Also, many people have dowloaded the file. Once you download and install, you have to go to the following URL to use it:

One good thing is that you will likely discover programs installed on your machine that you completely forgot about. This happens because the system updates you of upgrades that are available. You can often then go into Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs then remove the programs you don't want.

But dont' go ahead with every upgrade blindly. If something is working fine for you and upgrading offers little advantage, stick with what you've got.

Welcome to boards. Looks like some good software you found. I'll have to try it out at work today.

Do you believe CNET is malicious? It hosts a few adwares and junkwares, that doesn't make it malicious though. Sometimes,CNET "accidentally" hosts a malware also some users complaint about malware over their forums -- I do believe CNET sometimes hosts malicious content,as well as keyloggers and trojans that have successfully bypassed CNET's security system.
It'd be really interesting to lurk around the "un-popular" area around CNET and see the result with my security tools as well as analyze the files with Ollydbg (my favorite de-bugging tool). I'll post the results (within next 42 hours)
CNET has hosted a few rogues before -- They were also Caught adding malware to a few softwares.
I'd love to hear other people's opinions about CNET,however, the BC developer himself disagrees that CNET is malicious.

A:Your opinions at the security of CNET

No, I do not think is malicious. Accidentally hosting a malware speaks for itself. It is not deliberate. This has happened to many different sites including ours. The only thing you can do is learn from your mistakes them and make sure it does not happen again. Also many legitimate sites become hacked and distribute malware without their intention. This does not make the site malicious. It'd be really interesting to lurk around the "un-popular" area around CNET and see the result with my security tools as well as analyze the files with Ollydbg (my favorite de-bugging tool). I'll post the results (within next 42 hours)What is this un-popular area you are referring to? You mean their download section, which is anything but unpopular. I would probably use the opposite word to describe it.CNET has hosted a few rogues before -- They were also Caught adding malware to a few softwares.I do think their use of installers, which contains known tenacious adware, is a problem. What most people do not realize, though, is that a program developer can opt out of the use of these installers by contacting It is also possible that the developer chooses to use these installers so they then get a revenue share of the money made by the installer. With this information it is hard to say whose at fault for using these installers..Cnet or the developer? A:To all that use and have suggested Security Essentials

Nice to know.
I use it exclusively, mostly because I don't see a reason to use anything else at this point. I'm not going to pay for something just for the feeling that "paid is always better".
I have it on my moms netbook(Win7), my laptop(Win7), my kids pc(XP), and my old pc(Vista) which my kid uses when he's at my place. Not once has there ever been a problem.

But always keep in mind, browsing habits are the first line of defense. Doesn't matter how much you did or didn't pay, if you're not careful in the first place, it WILL happen....protected or not. Nothing is perfect.

I am having issues installing MS .NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 Service Pack1 Security Update for Win XP( KB 953297) The yellow shield indicates this new update is ready to install but every time i try to install this automatic update i get failure and error message code Ox643.I am not alone i am sure with this problem as i have accessed MS sites and many folks are experiencing same problem.MS own site for troubleshooting this issue has not solved my problem.I have also tried getting rid of flash.ocx and swflash.ocx and this still doesn;t work. Also tried, cranking in "Notepad C:/remove.bat" in RUN and entering both "NETSTOP WUAUSERV" and NETSTOPCryptSvc" and this also did not do the trick. Also had problem of finding this update in ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAM or the .NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 SERVICE PACK 1. It is not easy to identify in ADD or REMOVE.Does anyone know a fix for this issue?? The yellow shield continues to linger on my system tray telling me the install is ready. Would appreciate anyhelp with regard to this.I am contcated MS and am awaiting their response.

The 'fix' seems to be to uninstall the 1.1, reboot, then reinstall it and then get the MS updates and apparently they go in smooth.

Hi -- Does anyone have any suggested optimal security settings for Win 7? For example, in Win XP under Computer Management there's a long list of Services that can be enabled/disabled (like Remote registry editor, etc etc) and similarly with the Security protocols.

I haven't done the install yet but I'm guessing there must be similar settings in Win 7 and am wondering if there's any guidance as to what these should be set to (I can guess things like remote registry editor should be turned off, if not all remote access). Thanks!

A subsequent window cryptically stated, "ThinkPad BIOS Flash Update Utility: Version 29.17, please choose Update ThinkPadBIOS or Update model #" without explaining why I'd need to do so, although the window looked otherwise legit. I ignored the window and it hasn't come up again. Also, I couldn't find anything on this site or elsewhere about a critical BIOS update needed for my laptop. We have an issue with this security update, as it keeps on failing to install in windows update.
I receive error code: 851A004A
What I have did was to manually install the the update from the MS site, and the machine shows it has been installed and when I ran updates again, windows updates picks this security update again even though its installed.
I have removed SQL server 2012 developer edition  and all of its components, restarted the machine. Did windows updates and then installed SQL 2012 again and manualy installed KB3045321 and still after running windows updates, windows shows tries
to install this update.
My company runs reports from WSUS regarding failed windows updates. This machine appears in the report even though its installed. I have tried hiding this update and still it appears in the report.
I then built another machine, did windows updates, installed SQL server 2012 developer edition ran windows updates and again it fails to install the security update. It gives the same error message 851A004A. Again installed update manually and still
windows updates tries to install this update again.
Any ideas ?

A:CNET and malware?

If you're savvy enough you can still download from CNET. I tread very carefully when dealing with them and have had no problems. However, I rarely find anything there worth downloading anymore.
As far as alternatives, it depends on what you're looking for....
Definitely AVOID Softpedia and Softonics- Much worse than CNET when it comes to malware add-ons.

I have several Iobit products on my PCs. When an update becomes available they do not come directly from Iobit but from CNET. I have two questions about this:
Why would they provide their updates through a third party and not directly from their own Web site?
Is CNET, the third party used by Iobit, a safe Web site? I have a recollection of being told, as an incidental matter, about something else I posted about telling me CNET was an unsafe Web site.

A:Is Cnet Safe?

CNET isn't 'unsafe', but it has a proprietary installer for some software that will download/install PUPs.

However, just a minute ago, while preparing this post, I searched CNET for the program and got a slightly different looking page

Anyhow, I clicked okay, and the hourglass popped up indicating that the computer was working... and then nothing. The box disappeared and no install procedure started.

I searched my computer for the downloaded files but I can't find them anywhere. No icons appeared in either the Start menu or on the desktop.

Hi. I don't know what has happened but my pc is running strangely recently. For example, I can't install the visual c redistributable (vcredist.exe), or directx 9.0c, and some games don't work which did a while ago - now they crash to the desktop. I haven't got a restore which fixes the problem. It is all a bit strange.
I've got windows 7 64 bit on a Dell vostro - i7 860, 4g ram etc.
I've tried microsoft security essentials, all manner of spyware removers including spyware search & destroy to no avail.
What should be the next step in investigating this?
Thanks for any help!

A:can't install visual c redistributable, or directx 9.0c, can't update - security update for visual c++, system update...

Microsoft Windows 7 already has DirectX 11, so installing version 9 will always fail and is useless. It also has VC++ redistributable 2005 and 2008. The latest version which is not included on Windows 7 is VC++ 2010 redistributables which you should install (but very few games are designed in VC++ 2010 today). When games fail, they create a crash report or log. You should go through them and try to find the possible cause. What message do games show when crashing?Check Event Viewer to find the possible cause of crashing of a game.

I just discovered this problem when Myrti and I were working on some other problems on my computer. I noted that I'd gotten an 'update failed' several times lately. It said 'Some updates could not be installed. The following updates were not installed. MS.NetFramework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for windows 2000, XP, Vista, 2008, Windows7 and Windows Server 2008R2 (KB953297).' The error code was 0X64C.

I checked back in my logs and found that my computer has been attempting this update since October 2009!

When I tried manually at the Microsoft site, it said I needed to upload ActiveXControl, which I did. It still couldn't successfully update that security.

I have the log. Would you like for me to attach? I just did it a few days ago.

Some time ago I stopped trusting because of the first 3 programs I downloaded from them, two of them triggered alerts from ESET Antivirus when I launched the installers. More recently I decided to try them again as a last resort, and ESET blocked the last 3 downloads I attempted, including IrfanView and the Nero InfoTool. I downloaded IrfanView directly from the IrfanView site and the Nero InfoTool from Lenovo, and I've had no problems with either program. I exchanged a few e-mails with Mr. Skiljan at IrfanView, and he insists that he can't find any problem with the cnet site, and the problem must be with ESET. The McAfee TrustedSource site and the Malware Domain List site have no indication of anything wrong with the cnet site. I'm not quite certain which information to trust, so before I contact the appropriate site(s) to suggest data base changes, is there some other way to verify the information or misinformation I've been getting? (Sorry about posting so many questions lately, but I've encountered more than the usual number of issues lately.

Heres my problem:
I have recently installed norton internet security 2005 as well as the firefox browser, but im not sure whether or not they are causing the problems.
When i open up internet explorer or firefox and navigate to, The images and frames do not load. This is the only website (that i know of) that is completely affected, however many have a few images that fail. Anyway, i get the classic broken link icon, and when i try to view the images in a seperate window, firefox tells me "The connection was refused when trying to access", and internet explorer gives me the "page cannot be displayed." I am confused because i have searched through all the options in Norton, including adblock and firewalls, that would affect this, and I even tried completely disabling the security, but it still does not work. I know that its not the site because everyone else can access it fine. I have installed spybot in the past, but i have tryied a few of the registry removers and still the problem persists. Any help would be great, thanks.

Also, im running a PC with Windows XP, service pack 2, Internet explorer v.6 SP2, firefox v. 1, Norton Internet Security 2005.

Today I was removing some viruses because I was infected and two of the trojans were the cnet installer so I did some reserch and came across this: I'm very shocked and I may never trust cnet again

A:Cnet bundled with viruses

After speaking with firemaster1337, I tested this and found that their new downloaded contains offers for toolbars and other programs that can be considered adware. If you state that you do not want to install these, it will not install, but will in fact download these offers to your %Temp% folder regardless.

Crappy programming for not cleaning up the temp files after and even crappier offers to be putting in their downloads. This, in my opinion is just looking to make more money by using the service. Still I would not go as far as stating that the CNET downloader is installing viruses or trojans, when in fact nothing malicious is installed on your computer.

A year ago I used CNET Catchup a lot, it was a great tool, would scan your computer for all the .exe's, and .dll's, etc..

It would then list them on the website, and then you had the option to continue and check for updates, it would then show you your current version, and the new version that was available for download (if a new version was available), then a few months later, CNET Catchup shut down, and I have been searching for a program that has these capabilities ever since.

Anybody know an alternative? Thanks in advance

A:Anybody know of a CNET Catchup Alternative?

There used to be Cybermedia's Oil Change (taken over by Network Associates/McAfee) but I don't think it is still available.

Also, Norton used to have a Web updater program, can't remember the name.

On Cnet you can still subscribe (free) to a weekly newsletter which sends you a list of available updates.

Don't know of any other prograns at the moment but this should get you started.

tried Cacthup from Cnet and if so what do you think?<br><br>
Is it concidered Spy Ware?
Do you think it is usefull?

Cnet Catchup, for those of you who don't know, scans your system
finds your progarms and what version they are and then will run
a scan to see witch of them needs to be updated, then gives you
a list of the programs and whether or not there are updateded
versions, and gives you a link to where you can get the updates.

It is not spyware.

CatchUp is part of Norton Web update service or it replaced it you may say.

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.
Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.
I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.
If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

I think it is trying to update the same security update as above.

The situation has been like this for maybe a fortnight now.

Please could you help me to sort the situation out.

Many thanks

Regards Richard Milner.

PS, My security software (Kaspersky Internet Security 2009) has been flashing up a message about Key logging? (what ever that is) whenever I click on & open up my media playing program InterVideo WinDVD 5?.. Could this have anything to do with the aforementioned Microsoft Security update ?

No hating on CNet (they're usually pretty good), but when I posted something about this issue and someone replied back to do something and then post what happened, I did so and have yet to get a reply. Ick! I thought CNet was one of the better people to go to for issues.

Anyway, the issue itself as I posted it on CNet ( ):

I recently bought a Asus A8V-VM Socket 939 Motherboard ( (about a month or so ago) and then even more recently got me a Aspire X-Infinity case ( to put all of this in (the AMD Athlon 64 processor (, two memory sticks, a Sound Blaster sound card, two Maxor HDDs, two DVD disc drives (one just a DVD Rom, the other a DVD Burner)). I had plugged everything in several times, trying different orientations and what not, making sure everything is in right, but nothing will turn on except the mobo LED light on the board. I am not sure if it's the power supply or something not plugged in right (there are two extra cables that aren't plugged in, one that according to the instructions I shouldn't have to plug in and the other is a male connector to something in which the directions give no heed about whatsoever). I assume the mobo... Read more

A:Help! Comp won't start and cnet didn't help much!

I'm with you brother*

First* I bought that mobo (motherboard) and all my hardware and an Aspire case too, except at newegg. I did not have 2 hd's and that much stuff. I had a much better experience getting mine going but still had snaggs. ie... I didn't have all the front case wires plugged correctly. I exhausted myself to no end with my 1st build and it was for my 16 son.
I asked around for a week and found a lone-guy puter shop in a town next to mine who took me right in, reconnected everything, gave me his own ide cables and setup the bios for 50.00 freaking bucks!

Get some sleep, find someone reputable in your area , call explain like I did about for your son, etc... and get some prices. If the guy is as good as mine was, he explained what "i did wrong" and you will learn from it. 1st time is the hardest, I swear once it gets cranking you'll be building another asap.
Just food for thought, i was on a time-table though and had to get it done by xmas!

The simple standard is- take the mobo out and place on top of it's cardboard box.
put in one stick of ram, attach the cpu & heatsink/fan
plug in the monitor / mouse
plug in the psu
say ten hail mary's << just kidding.
turn on
start there if you please, I couldn't anymore and let the ego- go and brought to that guy* "" JUST MY OPINION""

Merry Christmas Everyone and Happy New Year!

It's been quite a while since I've been on this site. Been busy.

I do have a question, but first I'm going to rant. I apologize for this and that I'm not sure where to post this, so I'm doing it here.

I used to use CNET to look for different software, but now they try and include some crappy d/l thing everytime, unless you can manage to find your way around it. Now when I'm looking for new software, I'll check out CNET to maybe find it and get the review, BUT I'll DOWNLOAD IT FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE and NOT CNET!

CNET's "add-on" is full of garbage, spyware or whatever and you have to spend time removing the darn thing off the pc. I no longer trust ANYTHING off their site and recommend it to NO ONE! Also, their check box system on the left to refine the search doesn't give you enough time to check off more than one box at a time before it starts searching and starts clogging the system. And there is no comment or contact info to let them know their site is beginning to suck, so they obviously are not interested in anyone's comments or suggestions, so their site can rot as far as I care.

That's my rant!.... And now here's my question:

Can anyone suggest similar sites to that of CNET that gives reviews on the software, but where the downloads are CLEAN! Not "we'll give you faster d/l, but it'll cost ya!" or "Here! Try this spyware on... Read more

Hello friends,
This past weekend (Sat: 3/15, I believe-- perhaps Sunday), I was gearing up to wrap-up grading and work for Spring Break. I enjoy taking many breaks when I grade, and was attempting to download a version of WinRar-- unfortunately, the version of WinRar I downloaded was from CNET, which has a Trojan attached to it. Even if it does not-- this was somehow the catalyst for me receiving a Trojan on my laptop along with SpyWare.
I spent most of the day fixing the problem. The trojan was associated with a program called Search Agnet, I think-- I cannot remember right now. I will update details that I remember on this matter. I successfully removed the trojan and the spyware after several hours of stress. But I am unsure if I fixed the problem completely.
So today as I came in, my laptop showed the BSOD and gave me the Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error message.
It did give me a memory dump file. This happened a second time and gave me another memory dump file. How can I upload the memory dump files to this message-- it won't let me upload them? I have the laptop in Safe Mode and it is functioning correctly. How can I fix this error?

Just to be checking I did this.
Went to Cnet and checked download HWMonitor Pro.
Read the agreement and their is a lot of new unwanted goodies in the agreement. I don't know whethrer Cnet put them there or HWMonitor put them there. I checked except and went on with the download and install. Then up jumped Microsoft Security Estentials and stopped something. (Win/Price Gong) Then I removed it.
Next was Malwarebytes Anti Malware Pro and it found 7 (PuP.Inof Atoms) I removed them all.
Next was Super Anti Spyware, the free one and it found 6 tracking cookies and I removed them.
I noticed I have a new browser search bare in all my browsers.
MJXI DJ Toolbar. What a little sweet heart.
I run AdwCleaner and it removed all the entries.and their was a gazillion of them.
I'm I done; no way.
I installed and ran Eset Online Scanner after updating. Just on the C drive. I will do the other drives later. Eset Online Scanner found two (Win32/Downloader Admin.G Apps) I removed them.
I will be doing scans on my other drives next.
Now folks my computer did not have all these things until the download from Cnet of HWMonitor Pro. I haven't even installed HWMonitor Pro yet. I have right clicked and scanned it with MSE and MAM Pro and it comes up clean. Makes me think all the little unwanted goodies came from Cnet.

What is CNET Download Manager ?
It has a symbol at bottom of computer that says Kontiki?

If it is bad = how do I get rid of it ?

A:What is CNET Download Manager ? (Kontiki )?

It's a download manager like many others(Download accelerator,Get Right,etc.). If I remember correctly I have heard some good things about the program, as far as it doing what it suppossed to. The main reason one would need or want one is because IE does not resume downloads. So, if you are on a dial up service and get disconnected after downloading only part of the file you will have to redownload the whole thing again. If getting disconnected is not an issue download managers are pretty much redundant.

Good evening all,

I am really losing the will to live concerning the Globasearch / babylon.xml malware. I recently installed a few items from and stupidly didn't unselect an option that ended up installing a babylon plugin to Firefox.

I've been liaising with the Malware support forums, but they prematurely shut the issue as marked as complete. I've spoken to the admin about getting the thread opened again, but nothing as yet. Find the details here:

Today I installed Code Blocks so that I can start learning C++ and I updated iTunes. On launching Chrome the globasearch malware was back.

I am happy to donate/buy a beer to anyone who can permanent resolve this issue. The idea of backing up 1TB of data and reinstalling windows really isn't my idea of fun!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can assist.

I have Vista 32 bit, and my PC was working fine until I downloaded the same virus twice. I was unsure what had caused it the first time as I was downloading numerous things, but I only realised what it was after trying to re-download one of the programmes a second time after the first virus. (

The First Time:

I downloaded the virus, and I got the Blue Screen of Death, the PC automatically restarted, and when it did, I realised Norton Internet Security had become disabled, and was saying my PC was under threat, so I went to safe mode, restored a day or two back and then scanned with Norton - there weren't any problems. My PC was then running normally, but a little slower. I downloaded Advanced SystemCare and Malwarebytes.

The Second Time:

I downloaded the virus again, and I got the Blue Screen of Death, the PC automatically restarted, I went to Safe Mode, and restored it to a few hours back, I think. I had downloaded Advanced SystemCare and Malwarebytes prior to the second time, so I used all these 3 in Safe Mode. There were no apparent problems, but then I noticed many files in (C:) called Unknown Folder_____(Random numbers) ? there were literally hundreds of those folders, and they kept taking up more and more space in my (C:) until the point there was no memory left. I could not delete any of the files, so I ran malwarebytes which notified me of around 30-40 infections, which it quarantined an... Read more

I found some questionable files this week that had been downloaded by my son. I have since spent a great deal of time trying to scan and clean the computer. Each malware/spyware/anti-virus scanner has had varying levels of success.

It seems that the bulk of my issues have been resolved but I am still unable to install the following update from Microsoft: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2719177)

Each time I try to update it, it aborts and gives me an error code (80073712), that is not showing up in any google searches or searches of microsoft's site.

Additionally, every time I shutdown or restart the computer it shows that new updates are being installed.

I am using Windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a Win2K SP4 (all Critical Updates) laptop that has a weird quirk I noticed recently. I have installed the Security Update KB819696 (Unchecked Buffer in DirectX Could Enable System Compromise) a few times, but it never asks to reboot when finished and will always show up as a critical update even when I have manually rebooted the laptop.

Any idea on what could be causing this and how to solve it? Recently there has been some problems with malware/spyware/adware (which is cleaned) and perhaps something in the registry was corrupted or deleted as a result. Other than that, everything seems to work fine. Thanks for your help.

A:Security Update KB819696 in Windows Update even after installing it.

I've had that happen on more than one occasion. MS eventually fixed the problem but your case may be due to other factors.

Here's what Doug Knox offers:

Usage: Download xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs and save it to your hard drive. Double click the VBS file you downloaded and you'll be prompted to enter the KBxxxxxx or Qxxxxxx number of the Hotfix. No checking is done to see if the Hotfix is actually installed on your system, so its your responsibility to ensure that it is.

Note: I cannot guarantee that this will work for ALL HOTFIXES. Using the tools at my disposal, I have determined how the majority of checking is done for the presence of a particular hotfix. This mechanism may not be the same for all Hotfixes and could change at any time.

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

Update - 9/8/15

Fixed by reinstalling Windows fresh (Again).

I think the problem was caused by installing Windows linked with my Microsoft account and then switching that to a local user. My Microsoft account was registered for the insider program so perhaps I was receiving the fast updates and switching to a local account put me on slow updates which got Windows Update muddled in the confusion.

Original Post

Windows Update appears to be stuck/broken. It displays this loading animation even when left alone for an entire day (See screenshot). All the other panels such as Windows Defender will display their available options, it is only Windows Update that will not show.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

I have made some alterations to the service configuration, disabling what I had been advised as unnecessary services. I have reverted as many of those changes as I could remember but it is a possibility that one of those changes caused this.

Background Intelligent Transfer service is "Running" and set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".
Windows Update service is "Running" and set to "Manual (Trigger Start)".

8 Aug 15 - Edit: I have cross referenced services with another computer with an unaltered fresh install of Windows 10 Home. No difference in service configuration was found.

Internet connectivity is stable. Network profile is "Public". No alterations have been made to the default network configuration.

Hello, everyone!

So a little background first...

My dad's PC was loading up Windows (black screen), so I pop out the hard drive and do an error check and virus scan on my computer. Everything turned out OK, put the hard drive back in and Windows starts up.

Now, however, even though the internet connection is fine, I'm getting timeouts when trying to go to Windows Update or when updating Security Essentials. Strangely enough, I tried installing other anti-virus programs and experienced connection issues.

I also ran the drive through Malware Bytes and came up clean, so I'm not really sure where to go from here. My dad has some older software that he'd like to keep but doesn't have the original disks to reinstall, so a format would be a last resort.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!!

What operating system are you using?
It might be well, to d/l save to a file an anti virus, firewall, and some anti/malware,spyware programs there are many free ones.. Then when you are off line, go to control panel, programs, and uninstall the pc security service if it is listed.
reboot the computer, then install the saved programs, one at a time with a reboot between each install.
Feel free to let us know if you have any questions..
